You groan as you stir from your dreamless slumber, rubbing your eyes with your prosthetic. A nap had been the last thing that you had wanted forced upon you, but Nachi and Kaga’s glares and surprisingly strong arms had left no debate for you to win as they hauled you like a petulant child to the barracks. Once your head made contact with the pillow, though, you couldn’t argue that it that they had had a compelling case.

Raising yourself from the comforts of the mattress, you clutch your head in your hands. Your eyepatch was gone… probably on a table somewhere. At the sound of the closing door, you – reluctantly

‘Kaga?’

‘Good morning, Commander.’ She greets. ‘Sleep well?’

‘As well as I could have.’ You grumble, rubbing your chek. ‘What time is it?’

‘It’s almost 9 am.’ She mentions, turning around to take something. ‘Here – I thought that you could use a little something.’

Your eyes widen with surprise as you see a tumbler – an expensive-looking tumbler that was most definitely not standard issue – presented to you… along with an ornate cup that would probably cost more than a week’s shift in a dive. Kaga hums to herself as she flicks open the top, pouring what looked to be a cup of hot coffee, specially made for you. You shift your feet over the edge of the mattress and onto the wooden floor, rubbing your hands in anticipation. She gives you the cup – it burns your fingers a little, but it doesn’t matter that much, really. It had been a while since you’d been treated to something like this.

‘Thank you.’ You give Kaga a thankful smile – she doesn’t give you one back, but she does acknowledge you with a small nod. ‘Hard to believe I’ve only been asleep 3 hours.’

You take a sip of the hot, bitter liquid – it’s definitely freshly made. Even if it is a little… thick for your liking.

‘28.’

You blink, looking right at her as she pours a cup for herself.

‘Huh?’

‘You’ve been asleep for 28 hours.’

The cup almost slips from your hands.

‘You owe me.’ She smirks, taking a sip from her cup. ‘Shigure and Murakumo were about to start funeral arrangements.’

Calming yourself down, you stare into the black liquid in your hands – the first time you’d been able to focus on anything with both eyes outside of that incident with the RAY – as a ton of grip creeps up on you. Your first day back on active duty and you had practically shirked it in favor of a whole day snoring… it’d be a wonder if Nachi wasn’t right outside your room door waiting to deck you for tossing the mounds on her and the rest of the team. Right after almost getting your Sub-Commander killed.

'How’s everyone?’ You take in another warm gulp – no use worrying about it… if she was going to deck you

‘Angry at you.’

You’d figured as much.

‘Do you know how long it takes to go through a file asking for approval on upgrading our gear?’

‘Depends.’ You answer, quickly and truthfully. Some of the forms took a bit longer to fill out than others. ‘Usually for the Destroyers it takes a tick.’

The both of you talk for a while – mostly about the exploits of a day you’d been absent from. How Nachi and Houshou had argued on whether you’d approve of a requisition of a more personal nature; when Tenryuu had unwittingly misplaced her own pile in Yuubari’s and Kaga’s right after; how Samidare and Shigure had managed to get through their boredom by doodling a rather well-done comic strip about a giant and his troll best friend together in the late evening… on Tenryuu’s requisition denial.

You really can’t help but smile at some of the stories.

‘We do need to come up with better synchronization with our excuses for you whenever you decide to play hooky.’ Kaga frowns, ‘If I recall correctly, the amalgamation would have amounted to the conclusion that you went to visit Akashi before you were called by the Admiral for a disciplinary hearing by the Court for getting into a fight with the Grand Lieutenant in an alley trying to retrieve some documents that were due yesterday because the Congregation had some beef with you.’

‘Um…’

‘Although, it’s strange that Nagato’s workload was significantly thicker than yours.’

‘It’s not that surprising.’ You shrug. ‘She is the Admiral’s secretary when she’s not helping me run things around here.’

‘All right – when I help her run things around here.’ You correct yourself.

‘Good that you know the pecking order.’ In that monotone voice, she taps you on the nose. ‘So many men tend to forget their place.’

Kaga leans in, giving you a soft kiss on the lips. Her hand presses on your chest; it feels like she’s climbing over you – you can feel so much on her upon that you’re immediately thankful that the cup in your hands is now empty.

‘Hey…’ You groan… and she immediately stops.

‘I believe that you’re in dire need of a shower.’ She pushes herself off you, scrunching her nose. ‘You know where the soap is.’

You get to your feet, muttering, and set the cup on the desk before going for Kaga’s shampoo and body wash – the bottles were still there as they were, but you realize that they were a lot lighter than before; perhaps you could offer to get a few bottles the next time you had the opportunity to do so? You’d been leeching off her without guilt for the last few weeks – if it had been anyone else, you reckoned that you would have been given a hint via a lesson on moochers and leeches at this point; you strip off your top, immediately frowning as you come into contact with the overpowering odor of your person… with disgust, you realize that the last time you’d bothered to have a shower had been in the morning the day before yesterday.

It’s no wonder that Kaga had fled.

You strip yourself of your pants, throwing both articles into the laundry basket in the corner and wrapping one of the folded towels on the seat of the chair around your waist. Grabbing the toiletries, you make your way to the washroom to do your deed.

‘Commander.’

You look up to see Takao, her eyes wide just as much as yours probably were – she was clad in a towel, just like you, her hair mussed and sticking up at all ends as though a static brush had run through it. The towel, to your surprise, wasn’t one of the rough, standard issue towels that you had – in fact, this one looked like it was being stretching the very definition of modesty – on Takao, it might as well have been a tea cosy, given how much her figure was threatening to burst right out from the threading.

Somehow or other, or because you’d practically seen it all before, you manage to control yourself – and give her an acknowledging nod.

Takao.’

You make your way past her, into the washroom and to the sink, setting down everything for your use. You pick up your toothbrush, squeeze and begin to scrub… right as Takao casually takes her place next to you, doing the same. Again, you go about your business

Nothing interesting to do or see here, you tell yourself, nothing at all.

Five minutes later, you find yourself nude and leaning against the partition, again, right next to her, waiting for the cold water to turn warm so you could have your comfortable ten minutes of hygiene maintenance. You occasionally throw a glance at her – she doesn’t do the same to you, eyes focused on the steady stream before her, waiting for her turn to enjoy the luxury of a comfortable shower. You bite your lip, considering just how awkward the situation had become.

This would be the first time that either of you had been alone together since that evening at the Prep Dock.

As much as you wanted to talk to her… you didn’t exactly have the confidence to tread carefully in this particular neck of the woods.

‘How’s work been?’ You spill – and by spill, you mean in the verbal sense; you’d barely thought up of a sentence to say to her and you’d let it all out

‘Hm?’ She turns to you, red eyes innocently wide.

‘How’s work been?’

You wish you could travel back those few seconds to knock yourself in the jaw twice with your prosthetic. Preferably before you’d even thought of opening up communications with Takao. You give her a close-lipped smile; you believe you wouldn’t look out of place as an ornament at a fun fair where the objective was to hit you with a rubber ball.

‘It’s been all right.’ She answers hesitantly. ‘I could do with a bit of a break, though.’

‘I suppose it would be too much to steal you for my own use.’ You grin at her – your efforts hadn’t been in vain; she had opened up to you, at least.

Takao’s red face, however, throws you back into a clarification of the context of your wording. Being a man and woman, nude above all things, in the company of each other, put the sentence into a much broader perspective than you’d assumed.

‘I mean, on the table.’

She gapes slightly, losing her grip on the wall and almost slipping as you try to collect your clumsy phrasing again.

‘I mean at the desk.’ You grunt, counting backwards from three, before providing the proper context. ‘Helping me with my paperwork.’

For the first time in what seemed like forever, Takao clutches her sides, snorting before letting out a small laugh.

‘It would be.’ She answers, giving you an apologetic look – as though she had seriously considered it. ‘I still have to deal with the incoming requests from the Court in regards to the dealings the fairies have with them.’ She sighs, heaving her breasts and reaching into the shower to gauge the temperature… before stepping underneath. ‘It’s been tumultuous to say the least. It’s like they want to bite each others’ heads off.’

‘The fairies are fighting with the Admiralty?’

You step under your own shower, pouring Kaga’s shampoo into your hands.

‘I wouldn’t call it fighting.’ She insists hastily, dropping her shoulders after. ‘But they are… for the first time since I can remember, they are having… disagreements.’ Takao looks up at you, biting her lip as she continues. ‘Of the big kind.’

‘Like?’ That was a curious thing to know: disagreements?

‘That’s classified. Your paygrade doesn’t allow me to divulge such matters to you.’

You both share a smirk, then a laugh.

‘I get it.’ You turn away, holding back a chuckle.

‘Commander?' You come face-to-face with her puzzled red eyes. 'Aren’t you supposed to be angry with me?’

Uh-oh.

‘If I’m being honest, I don’t know just what it is you’re trying for.’ The words leave your lips – you want to give yourself a smack for even uttering the idea, but… inside, you feel that it was the better decision to let it off your chest like that. You’d been angry, you’d been confused – but now, at least, you could tell her how you really felt instead of just nodding it off and pretending everything was hunky-dory when you’d thrashed a whole room lamenting your poor decision-making. ‘What’s all this about, really? You can’t tell me that you’re really doing this because you think the Submarine’s going to shove a torpedo down your throat for so much as winking at me?’

Takao goes agape, taking a step back as you lather your hair – as much as you’d practiced holding things back, it felt really good to be able to say that out loud… even if it did seem to come off as somewhat… mean. You give her a look, pressuring her to give you a straight answer – the most you’re able to get out of her, however, are a cross of dead fish sounds and a poor imitation of a sea lion’s mating call. You find yourself warding away a little guilt; you hadn’t intended for it to come off as such, but you had never been one for finesse – you had to get it across.

‘Huh?’ Her face contorts – you can see a snarl forming on her features, the first time you’d seen one so distinct.

‘I get you want to take a break and I understand that you’re hesitating on where we’re going but just clue me in just what you’re trying to get at out of all of this?’ You question, sounding a lot more accusatory than you’d intended. ‘A clean record? A letter on the desk saying just how good a girl you are?’

If there was ever a time you could claim that you’d never seen Takao lose her temper, the fact that right now she resembled a threatened wolf threw any and all assumptions and conclusions of the sort out the window. You even take a step back, wondering if you might have pushed a little too far – which, right now, was impossible, of course, considering too far by the definition of the people is where you’d started from. She raises jabs her index finger – and sharp fingernail – into your chest, making you yelp as you take another step back, suddenly feeling very much cowed.

‘For your information, a clean record isn’t an achievement – it’s a requirement.’ She shrills, sounding every bit as offended as you had been.

You find yourself flabbergasted. That was what she had latched onto? Of all things that you’d bothered to question and expected an answer from, that had been where she’d chosen to meet you?

Your restraint buckles as your eyes bore into hers – had she not taken you seriously? You had expected her to at least come up with a thousand different regulatory guidelines and how every single one would result in horrible death. Not a childish grip on the details of the specifics!

‘So that’s what this is about?’ You find your temper rising, hands on your hips, you try to loom over her – she’s not that much shorter than you are, so it’s an effort in futility… but it is an effort. ‘Being the good girl?’

‘You know that’s not it.’

Somehow, that doesn’t cool you down.

‘Then I’d at least like you to tell me.’ ‘Nagato told me that you’re scared of the Submarines. Whatever your reasons, fine. But if you’re just using that as a front to show off just how much of an angel you are to the brass, I don’t know if I’m – !’

‘I told you that it isn’t about being that!’ Her arms are at her side, balled into fists. She looks up at you through the rain of the shower – you can feel her press onto your belly. For some reason or another, you don’t particularly care. ‘I am not hiding our relationship from the Court of Admirals because I don’t want a tarnished record!’

‘Would you take a tarnished record if it meant me being in your life?’ You shoot.

You wince internally.

At the back of your head, you see the shaking heads of your superiors – even the Court Representative was there.

SMACK!

You stagger, almost slipping – no, you definitely are slipping now; barely grabbing the handles of the shower before Takao hooked your arm into both of hers, stammering an apology as you raised your hand to your cheek, nursing it tear – no, no, like a man. Most definitely like a man. She fusses over you, holding on to you as you tend to your wounded pride – as much as you cared to at the moment, anyway.

‘I am so sorry!’ She calls out apologetically, looking up – no, down at you. ‘I – I don’t know what came over me!’

‘What is it this time?' You sniffle, your ego unable to let her have the last word. One day, you reason... you would pay for it. 'You don’t want to be sent to the void – !’

SMACK!

‘I am sorry!’ She cries out almost tearfully. ‘It just went out there and you said it and I – !’

‘Stop!’ You glare at her, almost tearful yourself. ‘Stop! You are such a liar!’

You don't know what you're grasping at, but it sure felt like straws at this point.

‘I’M A LIAR?!’ She lets go of you – you almost slip again.

‘Yes you are!’ You accuse, raising yourself. ‘You are a big fat liar! You – you told Nachi and the whole base I peed down your throat!’

She gasps, indignant.

‘I did not!’

‘Did too!’

‘Did not!’

‘I did this!’

Immediately, she grabs your – surprisingly upstanding – member, and angrily – yes, angrily – drops to her knees… and takes the whole thing in her mouth. Not willing to give her the satisfaction of being correct of whatever it is the both of you had been arguing about, she grabs your buttocks, immediately going up and down – you don’t know if you can chalk it down to her inexperience or your own frustrations, but Takao works expertly and quickly. Her eyes only break contact with you to give the occasional hazed-over feature of concentration, but otherwise she looks right up at you as you work into a motion yourself. How dare she accuse you about lying about – about whatever it is that she had… lied…

Takao drags herself up and down your length, red eyes shimmering and ignoring the droplets from the shower above. Slowly, then quickly, she moves – it’s clumsy, flimsy and oddly hot; her tongue and cheek work you to the edge of madness. It doesn’t have Kaga’s finesse – you can’t believe you’re bloody well comparing between the both of them, but it’s all you can process. She doesn’t drink you, know… she’s pressing you to give it to her. All that she’s doing, all that she had been doing, the witch, is to coax you out of your dignity and your stance and just… just… by Heavens, it was working. You could barely remember your own name at this point, let alone what you had been arguing with her about.

It must have been some important issue, because as far as you know, not all stances could be changed by one’s loved on suddenly engulfing their member in their mouth to convert an argument their way. It just wasn’t done like that. Still… Takao was an ambassador… she would know these things better than you, you supposed… and she had gone out of her way to just show you where you’d gone in the error of your way, namely with her lips, tongue and teasing red eyes.

Her lips leave your member – she gives you a good stroke up and down as her eyes detach from yours to concentrate on her thumb, rubbing the underside in sinuous touches. You see a small smirk play on her features as she hums – and gives the tip a quick, hot peck.

You can’t hold it anymore. Cursing and praising her in one breath, you let it all out – and she takes it all in, eyes closed in a strange sort of mix of bliss and immoral satisfaction. You can feel her, you know, sucking and sucking and just taking you for all that you’re worth when she could have left you dry and depressed.

She staggers to her feet… while you can barely feel yours. Her red orbs meet yours again - you can barely make out what your brain is saying, never mind what to say at this point.

She kisses you on the cheek, raising her nose in superiority.

Have a good day, sir.’ She humphs, hands on her hips, that coy look still there.

And she is gone.

Also, Satan, I don't know. I tried to write it off to come off as comedic, then I couldn't help but think that Takao and the Commander, by the way they'd acted, wouldn't exactly back off when one put themselves into a verbal lock-up. Then I remembered that the Commander hadn't exactly reacted in the best way after the "cooldown" announcement, and giving that it's so heated, he wouldn't be able to help himself in bringing it up.

Then we get to Takao, who's still learning the ropes when it comes to relationships and where she wants to go. The Commander started being childish, then so did she... and then with intent to prove just how right she was, she... well, you know how that went, reading the post.
>>
As much as you relished – and the word is relish – basking in the aftermath of Takao’s act, you feel an emotional kick at the back of your mind – hurriedly washing off the soap, you make a dash for your Heavy Cruiser, hoping to apologize and clear up the mess that you’d inadvertently made by pressing her into such an action. Not that it was an unwelcome action, but it had to be made clear – if anything else hadn’t been enough that taking your Little Commander and putting it in her mouth whenever a serious discussion came up about the matters of your relationship, physical, personal and professional.

‘Takao, wait!’

You call out to her, seeing her rush to put on her towel and gather her toiletries in one swift motion – although that would be giving it too much credit, considering as she’d just managed to cover her front, her right hand gripping onto her towel while holding her toothpaste and the rest of her articles in the other. Not to be denied, you reach out to her, grabbing her hand – she drops everything in one go

‘I told you we’re done!’ She glares at you – although the effect on you is slightly lost by the glistening off-white dripping from the corner of her mouth.

‘Takao, wai – hang on a sec!’ You manage – instantly, she does.

‘W – Well, what is it? You have your answer, don’t you?’ Takao glares at you; she shakes her wrist away, rubbing her forearm. You open your mouth to say something, before closing it – this time you’d say it without the childish compulsion to feed your ego. She looks away as you try to gather your thoughts. ‘What is this about now?’

You hold back a chortle – you really can’t take her seriously with that there.

‘You have a little bit there.’ You raise your hand to her cheek – she shrinks away, slightly, before resting in your palm… enough for you to rub the last of it at the corner of her lips. ‘What would people say if they saw you walking out with that?

She snorts, trying to hold back a laugh. Here you are, Commander and KanMusu, in the oddest of positions in the wake of a bizarre argument over either you accusing her of using the Submarine as a smokescreen or her accusing you of taking things to illogical conclusions. At this point, you’re past wondering how the both of you had got here.

‘They wouldn’t pay it any mind.’

‘Maybe they’d say that I was doing something inappropriate.’

‘Maybe.’ She looks away again, biting her lip.

‘Does that scare you?’

No…’ she holds onto your wrist, her cheeks red as beet. ‘But I’m – !’

‘Hello, Commander!’ Samidare barges in, grinning. ‘Wanna get beaten by an oak branch?’

Taking the chance, Takao immediately grabs her towel, running past the cheerful Destroyer and into the hallway.

You sigh.

After resuming your shower, you found yourself handed the rest of your breakfast by Kaga. She’d brought up some sandwiches – straight from the capable hands of Mamiya’s restaurant – that were made up of a generous portion of peanut butter and jelly; in fact, more than you’d have put yourself. Still, food was food – you wolf it down without much judgment; having unwittingly passed on a whole day’s worth of meals didn’t sit comfortably with your stomach. Halfway through your meal, Kaga leaves to carry out her own duties.

She does give you a warning look and an unsubtle threat that should you look to drop your workload on any of the others again, she’d have you out at sea as Abyssal fodder. You take it to heart, not wanting to get on the bad side of any one of your KanMusu any more than you already had in taking a whole day snoring under the sheets. After finishing your sandwiches, you dress yourself – vaguely wondering who seemed to keep delivering a clean set for you day for day for use – this time in a more formal version of your drab wear. It even had a collar.

As you make your way down, you notice the new clock by the landing… it was just past 10 o’clock.

‘Commander!’

You see your two attendants – the feeling that despite you’d seen them about two days prior, it had seemed like weeks niggles at the back of your head. What’s more surprising is their state – both of them had donned what looked like some rather well-tailored formal uniforms of the brown persuasion… they reminded you of the Navy parade’s wears back in the day, only a lot more plain in coloring. That, and the fact that the both of them were loaded with files and briefcases that looked like they could even knock an Abyssal Oni into a bout of tears. You wonder how your bulky attendant was able to balance a file, a folder and what looked like an egg basket on the top of his head.

‘Gentlemen.’ You salute.

‘You feeling better today, sir?’

‘I am.’ You give an affirmative nod – they give twin smiles, apparently happy at the news. ‘Shall we get down to it?’

The three of you make your way to the common hall… only to find yourself holding back an aneurysm.

It looked like a hurricane hat hit the place. Pieces of paper, folders and binders were scattered everywhere – on the floor, right to the couch, under tacky mugs. Your mouth agape, you turn to your attendants, demanding an explanation.

‘Your Squadron insisted on filling in.’ Your bulky attendant offers, shrugging.

You pick up one of the many scattered sheets of paper… on the back is a crude drawing of an ogre hitting a tree.

We can upgrade people who're in cooldown right?
>>
>>583112
This seems like the most reasonable setup.
>>
>>583112
To explain why I'm upgrading Sammy, it's because we promised her we'd take her out onto the field, and our heavy hitters are down for the moment. If we're sending her out, then I thought she'd need the upgrades to survive.

As for the others, Nagato don't need extra Offensive, but she does need more endurance. Kumo went up and stabbed the Oni, so I thought she'd need to be a bit more tanky for that role, and Nachi complained about both her lack of firepower and her dwindling ammo (IIRC).
>>
>>583112
You can select different stats for each KanMusu. I believe my wording is off on that one.

>>583129
Yes. There's no limit in that aspect.

>>583158
>Nagato doesn't need extra offensive
Just to be clear, the grade of "damage" isn't affected by the upgrade. It's how well it pierces the Abyssal's natural shields.
>>
>>583047
Okay here is my idea, since we need to use the aquarius stuff first to avoid the -1 if possible

Aquarius Alchemical Components:
Nagato +Offensive/+Defensive/-Support
Nachi +Offensive/+Defensive/-Support

Actually for the :

Shigure, Kaga and Housho should get +Ofensive

Well, I'll give you folks some extra time. This IS a pretty big decision.

Oh, one more thing. You can't break 5 until another quest is complete.

I can get behind this.
>>
>>583329
WIth my plan, along with the revision were going to have Nagato, Nachi and Shigure available to take on Oni's along with Murakumos Naginata, although im thinking maybe give Takao 3 Offensive aswell so she can join in on Oni fights

It’d been four hectic hours since you’d done up your sleeves and proceeded to slave away. Four incredibly annoying and vein-popping hours of going through the mess to sort out what belonged where. Your two attendants, bless them both, had taken to just following your lead, helping you go through the files. You muse, almost sadly, that Nagato might have had a heart attack if she’d been here to see the stacks in such a state of disorder – how the dailies had mixed with the weeklies and the requisition forms had somehow made their way into a folder that called for better management of public toilets by the attending KanMusu. You even managed to pull out a file on Akebono and her report of missing items on her watch, which had nothing to do with you at all. It was baffling.

‘Sir?’ You look over your shoulder to see the bulky attendant, who had pulled out a sealed envelope with a blue stamp, the words ATTENTION written all over it. ‘I think we missed one.’

You groan, rubbing your temples and reaching out a hand to take it from him.

At around noon, some gofer for the Admiralty had showed up to hand you some documents – signed by the Court Representative himself – the reward he had so graciously hinted at previously, had just been that: more ingredients for the synthesized KanMusu gear. It had taken you by pleasant surprise, at first… until he had demanded the absolute proof that you were the Division that would be rewarded for your actions. It had taken another hour to explain that if it hadn’t been you, you wouldn’t have bothered to even don the uniform in the first place, which lead to accusations of you being an imposter and jibes about your weight. After some time, and finally convincing you, he had given you the unceremonious task of further digging through the pile for more files.

It would have been the end of the story, but his leaving was followed by the barging-in of a personnel member who had apparently gotten the memo that you’d approved some nonsensical maintenance issue – at which the gofer went back in to ask you for further documentation in triplicate so that there would be no confusion to which KanMusus you had requested to have their gear tuned up and which that you had chosen to delay.

That, of course, meant that you had to dive into the paperwork again to bring up more forms… and had to wait for a form from Ooyodo – bless your attendants – which the tall and lanky one had deemed fit under their duties to go across town and back while you entertained their judgmental glares.

After all that, he had left behind Nachi’s file. It almost makes you cry.

‘I’ll take it, sir.’

You hand your document over to your lanky attendant, again, thankful.

‘Ready for work, Commander?’ Your bulky attendant sits across from you.

‘Do you have Nagato’s stack?’

You decide to tackle Nagato’s workload – considering just what her job scope entailed whenever she wasn’t out there, it made the most sense to do first. Even if it meant delaying on your duties to the base, division or the other tasks assigned… her workload affected a lot more than just your barracks.

‘Stack?’

Your attendant looks at you with confused eyes, turning to the table that the three of you had previously shifted next to your desk. Mounds and mounds of paper were arranged in neat piles – piles – with stamps of many colors, URGENT and REVIEW among the many classifications that you’d put them under. None of them were less thick than half a foot, and if one had an eye as keen as yours, they could make out that the table was practically groaning under their weight. You flop onto your chair, holding out a hand – the bulky attendant puts a folder in it: a form that had something to do with dairy products and how they fit into the budget.

‘Right.’

Even an hour later, when the lanky attendant had returned from his errand, you find that the stacks just don’t seem to shrink. You groan as you try to make sense of the fifth document in a series of proposed algorithms on the maintenance of KanMusu gear – it looked like some sort of business proposal to a conglomerate more than a research mission for the Admiralty. You set it down, signing it off… before hastily reaching for the white-out; you’d have to take this under advisement from the Admiral – or, if she got out before you had gone through it all, Nagato would. You grimace as you picture her walking through the door, wrapped in casts and casting you a disapproving look, having gone unfinished before her recuperation.

‘This is insane.’ You growl, leaning back in your chair. ‘How does she keep up with this?’

‘Keep up with what, sir?’ Your lanky assistant looks over his stack.

‘Outgoing transfer requests, incoming transfer quests, approval forms for leave, supply denials, supply approvals, does she really do all this everyday?’ Frustrated, you take out a rather unprofessional-looking red envelope from a stack and opening it. ‘Rec requests, permission to use toilets and – !’

There was a picture of a little girl in a yellow dress holding up what looked like a mini-Nagato, complete with guns. She was standing in what looked like an area packed with people, a bus in the background – a depot – the only bundle of joy amidst somber, reserved faces.

THANK YOU FOR PROTECTING US, NAGATO-SAN – HINATA

P.S. MY DAD BOUGHT ME YOUR ACTION FIGURE!

You sigh as you set down the letter, flexing your fingers.

‘Come on, let’s get this over and done with.’

‘Aye-aye, sir.’

It’s late in the evening before you find yourself appreciating an empty table.

Although you and your Squadron had managed to repel an Oni, you can’t help but feel a sense of accomplishment heaped on you as you set aside the first stack of work. Achievements on the battlefield may have been more spectacular, but there was something about sorting yourself through the maze of bureaucracy that just makes you want to puff out your chest and cry out in victory. The bulky attendant looks relieved himself.

However, despite the less-sensible part of you basking in the glory, you find that your work isn’t quite done – and the sun was already setting.

Sighing, you grumble and reach over to pick up your Division’s stack of work. Almost immediately, you frown: the contents were familiar and did, in context, refer to your Division… however, it seemed that the duties that the document required of you were out of your scope. As far as you knew, the Expedition and Patrol Forces were out of your immediate line of involvement – and yet, again, you make your Samidare’s name as one of the listed recommendations on the file.

‘Patrol duties?’ You set it down, taking a thoughtful look. ‘Hang on, isn’t that the Vice-Admiral’s jurisdiction?’

Both of your attendants shrug, as clueless as you are.

‘I need to check on this. Can you check with the Vice-Admiral’s office for me, please?’ You hold out the folder – the bulky attendant takes it, nodding. ‘Tell him I’ve signed it preliminarily. Don’t go now, but tomorrow morning before you report in… I’d like a clear picture of what the proposal is.

‘Can do, sir.’

You get back to the task at hand, only, not half an hour later, encountering another roadblock in the form of unapproved supply forms for your Division – and some that unauthorized persons had tried to pass over as yours.

‘Unreal. Are we really this far behind on paperwork?’ You slap a fistful of papers down ‘Some of this should have been done days ago!’ ‘I know for a fact this wasn’t supposed to be here just yesterday!’

‘The office might have backlogs too.’

‘Backlogs on sausage party requests?’

‘Well, if you put it that way, sir, it’s just unfair.’

‘Most of these are updates on my Squadron’s extra tasks.’ You frown again, picking up another folder at the edge of your desk. ‘I stand corrected. Most of it are status reports that go in three copies. One for me, one for the Admiral and one for the Admiralty.’ You snort, grimacing at your two attendants again. ‘You’d think that at this point, someone would invent a less convoluted means of keeping records.’

Neither of them comment, and you’re back to work soon after. Twilight is definitely on the cards by the time you sign off on the last form.

‘I think we’re done for the day.’ You stretch back. ‘Good job, gentlemen.’

‘We’ll be off if you don’t need us for anything else, sir.’ Your lanky attendant salutes, his hands full of the filled-up files.

‘Thanks again for your help today.’ You thank them, grimacing as you indicate the rest of the piles. Untouched by the tip of the pen, but at least they were all arranged properly this time. ‘We’ll sort out the rest tomorrow morning.’

‘Will do, Commander.’ The bulky attendant salutes, before taking a step towards you… with surprisingly pleading eyes. ‘Hey, uh, I don’t know if you’ll mind, sir, but, uh… my girlfriend’s coming in for the weekend. She’ll be here about tomorrow afternoon.’

You raise an eyebrow. That had been an odd thing to declare.

‘Yes, and – ?’ It hits you. ‘You’d like to have the day off?’

‘No, no, sir, I mean… I’d like her to be around.’ He waves his hands in your direction, dropping some of his papers. Thankfully, they don’t fall out of their folders. ‘You know, see how her man does his job? I swear to you she won’t be annoying at all, I swear! Really!’ You cross your arms as he goes on – his stutter oddly reminded you of the days you’d tried to persuade your old bosses for a leave of absence. ‘It’s just, you know, her parents don’t really like me because I had to work for a fisherman – !’

His friend looks instantly offended by that last part.

‘Hey, come on, man, my Dad was plenty nice to you!’

‘Yeah, he was… and Heaven keep his peace, but her parents weren’t bragging about it to the windows, yeah?’ ‘At least his time I can show her that it’s a nice desk job and she can tell her friends that I’m helping in the war effort!’ ‘It’s heroic, you know what I’m saying?’

‘Oh, come on…’

‘Since the both of you have put up with my antics… I think it’s fair to say I owe you a favor or two.’ You really did – between running across town and helping you with the paperwork, it was fair to say that you could afford giving them a thread or two to pull on. Still… ‘However, as your Commander, I have to emphasize that while she is on-site that the both of you, above all, behave. Do I make myself clear?’

‘Y – Yes, sir! Thank you!’ He fumbles, smiling and dropping into a respectful bow, much to his friend’s chagrin. ‘Oh, um… and can you ask if Houshou-san could be free after lunch to – !’

‘That’ll be up to her.’ You answer honestly. ‘Dismissed, you two.’

You turn back to your table, straightening a few sheets and placing your pen in the drawer. With it being so late… well, so early, really, you suppose you could take the time to see Nagato. It crosses your mind, with an almost guilty thread, that you hadn’t spoken to her since her injury. Your worry rises from your gut again as you bite your lip, your emotions from that dreadful night threatening to spill over…

‘Finally caught up with your work?’

Hello, Shigure.’ You see your DD, looking very much the inquisitive sort, curiously gazing at you. Straightening the last of the sheets, you set down the small stack in the middle of your desk, before realizing something. ‘Aren’t you supposed to be at your station?’

‘Eh?’ She puts her hands behind her back, tilting her head to one size, puzzled. ‘I just got back, you know?’

You frown as you turn your head to the clock on the wall; it couldn’t have been that late now, could – your eyes slightly widen, your breath escaping you: it was indeed that late – it was half-past 6. You remind yourself to rush along – you didn’t know if Akashi had some visiting hours set, but you don’t think that she’d tolerate you popping in for a hello after dark without at least a raised voice and some finger-pointing.

‘Whatcha doin’?’

Shigure had approach you during your thoughts, her eyes curiously going over the now-organized stacks of work. Compared to the chaos that she and the rest of the Division members had left in the wake of their attempts to help you, you feel a small tinge of ease and a sense of satisfaction that you’d been able to get some of it out of the way as you so had.

‘Just finished the harder half of my job.’ You joke, chuckling at her further confused features. You gesture to the doorway. ‘I’m about to go visit Nagato, would you like to come with?’

‘Eh?’ Her eyes widen – you actually have to remind yourself that despite her innocent looks, this is one of the deadliest KanMusu under her command. Right now she just looked like a girl that couldn’t tell a difference between an anpan and a bagel. ‘Why?’

‘She’s in the MASH, and…’ You tentatively continue – you don’t want to wrap yourself in a funk of self-loathing in front of her of all things, but you had to at least try to be more honest with it. ‘I just want to make sure she’s okay.’

That was the truth.

Shigure looks thoughtful, humming and tapping her fingers against each other.

‘Okay.’

‘All right.’ You puff your chest, gesturing to the doorway again. ‘Let’s get going.’

It’s dark out, even for the evening. If this had been in one of the cities inland, you’d have thought twice about heading out. You lock the door and head to the edge of the compound, dropping out into the quiet street with Shigure in tow, the both of you not saying a word to each other. You take in the cracked and broken buildings on your right – as much as rebuilding had begun, it seemed that whatever the Admiralty had planned hadn’t reached your part of town more than it had reached inside. The dim lights and the empty streets… it was downright eerie.

If you hadn’t known better, you would’ve pitch it as a horror setting.

‘Were you scared?’

‘Huh?’

You stop in your tracks – Shigure follows suit.

Turning on your heel to face her, you see her face unusually serious – you wonder if she had read your mind, or guessed your thoughts, walking up the empty street. On any other day, you would be racking your brain to find something topical you could use to elaborate, but unusually, for the evening, there wasn’t a thing you could find… nor could you muster up the effort to actually put the words in your mouth. Shigure’s expression was one that demanded honesty, with how long-winded you had gone in the past in your explanations, you don’t think that she’d accept anything less than words and the projection of ideals that you held close yourself.

You wonder, though, for a moment, if all KanMusu held that kind of instinctual, emotional twang when it came to dealing with their Commanders? Between Shigure, Kaga and the others… there was a sort of comforting buffer that put you at ease when, with anyone else, you would have folded.

Shigure waits for your answer – and you move to give her one, speaking from the heart.

‘I think everyone gets scared sometimes.’ You manage; you’d had your fair share of that desire to turn tail and run in your 20-odd years of life. ‘Wouldn’t be human if I didn’t admit I wanted to run away when things get tough.’

‘Even when you faced the Oni?’

You hesitate again. You could deny it, tell her that you were doing your duty and had to keep cool whenever the situation called for it, but for some reason or other, the thoughts to the day hit you… and you can’t find a damned thing to keep you from it. Shigure hadn’t been there, she wouldn’t have known; it wasn’t in her to be this insensitive to pry knowing that you’d stiffen and keel over at the very thought of losing one of your own.

A sad smile adorns your features now. Shigure… even in her innocence, she could actually afford to throw you for a loop at times. You’d chastise her, but considering that this was the first time she’d initiated a topic, you don’t find it in you to drop the big words and keep her in the dark.

You don’t think she’d buy it for a second, either, if you’d played the bravado card.

‘Of course.’

Her mouth opens slightly, evidently surprised at your admission.

She makes small noises from the throat, which you chortle at, slightly, before gesturing at her to continue the journey. You didn’t want it to be too dark by the time you’d reached there. Shigure immediately follows; you raise your head to one of the street lamps, flickering on and off.

‘What about when it hurt the Sub-Commander?’ The words make you freeze in your tracks. ‘Were you scared then, too?’

>‘No… no I wasn’t’ (Deny)

As much as you don’t want to, your thoughts turn to the day at sea. Floating in a rust bucket barely held together by can-do and rivets, able to do nothing but scream useless commands as her life dangled by but a thread.

It was hard to think about. Harder than you’d thought it would be… but easier than you’d thought to at least admit. It hadn’t scared you; outside of its fearsome reputation and the whispers of how it could bring down entire Divisions, the Oni hadn’t even seen an inkling of fear out of you. Its eyes were menacing, its actions horrifying, but you couldn’t help but feel that… it was just part of the job. Facing insurmountable odds, defending humanity… it was part and parcel. There was no hiding from that truth.

What had happened when the Oni had grabbed Nagato’s gut… feasted on the flesh of her neck and shoulder… that had been something you hadn’t been prepared for. You don’t think it’s something – not even the Admiral or Vice-Admiral could look in the mirror and tell themselves that they’d be prepared for it when it came.

It was too blatant a truth, too vicious a lie.

‘I wasn’t scared of the Oni.’ You say quietly; your breathing had grown heavier since. ‘I was scared of losing Nagato.’

‘Commander, you liar.’ She grins toothily, saying so in a sing-song.

For some reason or other, your temper doesn’t rise. Your shoulders droop and your eyes give her a tired look, but that’s it.

‘It’s the truth.’

It really is.

‘I didn’t think that she would make it.’ You mutter the words, as if the very thought of them would have taken the last 36 hours away, putting you in that chair once more. ‘That time when she got…’ You run a hand through your hair, feeling your ire rise. ‘When it happened, I was paying attention to Nachi’s assignment – I thought that Hiei and Zuikaku and the Vice-Admiral had it covered, that I could afford to look away. It was barely five minutes. Five minutes I could have spent at least leaving a standing order to move into a support position or even tell her to press or just regroup with Kaga, or I could’ve requestion an upgrade for her defensive systems or support systems before and it wouldn’t have been…’

You trail off.

‘We should cling to wouldn’ves and should’ves so that they become lessons. Not so that they can become spectres of regret.’

You turn to Shigure, surprised.

‘I already asked a question.’ She says in that playful tone of hers. ‘I think it’s your turn now, Commander.’

True, and that description best applies to Kaga really. Nachi is more outright antagonistic instead of just snarky. If Tenryuu were around, she'd switch between prankster and responsible officer, while Takao would be the usual coy/be awkward over the status of their relationship.

During our recent interactions with her, she seems to be getting less antagonistic. She's opening up to the Commander, though very slowly. Her initial relationship with the commander reminds me of the way senior NCOs feel about kids just out of Officer school, but since we've both begun to prove ourselves, as well as helped her with her "incidents" in the bathroom, I think she's beginning to view us in a marginally more positive light.

‘How’re your sisters?’

You wonder if you’d stepped into a boundary too personal. Shigure had always had problems opening up – not just to you, but the rest of the Division – and many of them had voiced a dislike of being around her, if not of her person. The only ones that seemed to be comfortable with her were… Samidare and Nagato, if your observations said anything. Although it could have just been professional courtesy in the case of the latter.

Strangely enough, Shigure doesn’t seem the least bit curious that you’d found out that she had sisters. She actually looks thoughtful, even in this bleak evening, turning to the sky, probably pondering an answer.

‘I have many sisters.’ She answer, much to your surprise. She looks up at you now, frowning – she seems weirdly annoyed at you now. ‘Although, I don’t know why you’d be asking me, Commander. You last talked with Samidare this morning.’

Now, it was your turn to frown.

‘What does Samidare have anything to do with it?’

‘Well, you asked me how my sisters were doing.’ She answers, her eyes innocently wide – now it appears that she was the confused one, if such a thing was possible.

You grumble, starting to get annoyed.

How would Samidare know anything about – !

SAMIDARE’S YOUR SISTER?!’

Everything twists and turns. The world, once such a place of order and understanding, had morphed into a place of chaotic uncertainty. You try to put their faces next to each other, Shigure’s false smiles and Samidare’s cheerful hops

‘Yes.’ She brings a hand to her lips, giggling. ‘Younger sister.’

‘Hang on, hang on, I really – I really need to gather myself here. You… You two are nothing alike!’

‘Eh?’ She tilts her head. ‘Commander, not all siblings are the same. This goes true for humans too, yes?’

‘She – She’s a sunny ball of sunshine! She bounces day to day and beats me in the morning with an oak branch thinking it’ll make me happy!’ You shrill. ‘She cries when fish slap her in the face!’

‘That wasn’t a joke, Commander.’ She looks up at you as you mutter under your breath, praying for a smidgen of sense to come back to this now-confusing existence. ‘How did you find out I had sisters, anyway?’

‘Mamiya – Irako told me.’ You manage, clutching your head. You still hadn’t registered the thought. It was surreal. ‘She said you had two sisters… Yuudachi and Shiratsuyu.’ ‘You tried to sneak into the pantry at Ominato with the both of ‘em. Wait, hang – !’

Shigure is behind you, staring at her feet.

‘Shigure?’

‘Sorry, I… I spaced. Forgive me, Commander.’

You’d seen that smile before. Too many times.

Maybe it’s because you’d spent the last few weeks figuring out that being a good Commander didn’t mean only being able to bark orders on the field without a care; perhaps it could have been that the responsibility that had been heaped on you as a Commander had opened your eyes to the burden of the role of a being a leader. Whatever it was, Shigure’s expression didn’t seem to fall into the category of things that you would have left well alone with but a wave of dismissal.

‘What’s wrong?’ You inquire, putting your hands in your pockets, you take a step towards her, holding a curious gaze.

‘Oh, nothing, Commander!’ She chirps, once again putting her hands behind her back and skipping right around you.

You walk alongside her, looking on ahead. It’d be at least half an hour before you’d be able to see the MASH; a part of you wonders if it had been the right decision to not wait for a buggy instead. However, the more rational part of you considered that as terrible as this part of town looked after hours – and it looked like something out of a pulp magazine – it was at least a good deal less frightening compared to the horrors that you would have subjected at the back seat in the old man’s buggy.

Besides… you don’t think you’d have been able to convince Shigure to drop into the seat next to you without risking a broken limb or two. A walk was the safer option.

She’s calmer now, and humming a tune under her breath instead of being guarded as she had been those few minutes ago.

‘Can’t be nothing.’

‘Eh?’

‘If it’s enough to trouble you, it can’t be nothing.’

She doesn’t speak – out of the corner of your eye, you spy an annoyed glance she throws at you now and again. You walk past a few civilians, idly chatting and ignoring you, before trying again.

‘Did you get into a fight with your sisters?’

You see her stumble slightly, but otherwise, she doesn’t acknowledge your question. Far from it for you to be someone to so brazenly bait another, but considering that it was Shigure and that it was something that bore weight for her… you really didn’t see any other way. She hadn’t responded to direct questioning well before.

‘Do you miss them?’

She doesn’t reply. At least, not immediately.

‘Yes.’

You’re not quite sure if it was with a sense of loss or longing that she says the word. You didn’t think it would be appropriate to assume that either were… still here or gone, but considering that the names affected her in some way, you try not to step too far.

‘Commander, you’ve been angry at people before.’ It’s a statement, not a question.

‘I have.’

‘Is it okay if you…’ She hesitates again – the both of you stop in your tracks. ‘Is it okay to keep being angry with someone?’

‘It’s not good for you.’

You answer it tentatively – you approach the subject with caution: the topic, not Shigure. She doesn’t seem to be the least bit swayed by it, though – Shigure bites her lip, looking to the lamps across the street, her eyes bright… but dull.

‘I see.’ She turns back to you, hesitating. ‘It’s bad?’

Relaxing your soldiers, you move to one of the nearby cement blocks, seating yourself on it. There was no use to you bringing tension here… not when you had to – God of Gods – had to take a more sagely approach. Gathering your thoughts, you remember the days prior to the endowment of your current title.

The yelling cooks, the pompous customers, the bad motorists… somehow all of that just clicked right now.

‘Not in the way you’re seeing it, Shigure.’ You put your hands on your knees. ‘It’s human to be angry at things – how unfair life seems to treat you; how it could be better; it’d be unreal if you just walked through life smiling at everything.’

Shigure smiles a bit at you – some of that obviously resonated with her.

‘Sometimes you just can’t help but feel it.’ You nod, agreeing with her. ‘You get angry at your boss for being unreasonable, you get angry at the people who cut in front of you and wish that they’d just crash their bike the next time they turn a corner… or you can be angry at someone for lying to you when you put your trust in them. In that context, at that time, who cares about what other people say: you’re upset! You have a right to show your discontent and your grievances with the world!’

Her smile widens a little.

‘But, to keep being angry,’ you lower your voice, bringing your hands to your knees. ‘to keep looking back at people and telling them that you wish nothing but the worst for one thing, for several things… it consumes you. It becomes hate.’

Anger to hate. Hate to to despair.

‘No one has the right to tell you to forgive someone for the sake of it.’ You admit, a little grudgingly. ‘I know well enough that sometimes it’s just too hard for you to let go before you think that you’ve been paid in full.’ You bite your lip, letting out a sigh. ‘But if there’s anything I learned in life, that if you hang on to that anger, that hate, it won’t just stop at you. Then you won’t hate just them anymore.’

You push yourself off the block, looking straight at her.

‘You start hating yourself, and everyone just becomes a reminder of it for you.’

‘Come on, Commander. Nagato’s waiting.’

You don’t say a word to each other the rest of the way. It’s some time before you reach the MASH.

Only to come face to face with another annoyance.

‘HALT! NONE SHALL PASS AFTER VISITING HOURS!’

You groan.

You raise a hand to your temples, counting backwards from ten. As much as you valued how much the MPs put into their duties, you really weren’t in the mood to address their eccentricities. Here was a man with a legend of a mustache, twice your width and just your height, clad in what looked to be a blue robe over his uniform; he brandished what looked like a very battered quarterstaff in his hands. He was older than you, probably almost as old as the Admiral, with a squashed face that looked like it had seen more battle than any of your KanMusu.

‘Would you please get Akashi?’

‘Wake the fair maiden, my boy?’ He barks out in laughter, tapping the tip of his staff to the ground. You cross your arms as you wait for his it to subside. He was beginning to grate on you. ‘The lady Akashi,’ he emphasizes the words by making a motion with his free hand, trilling her name as he gestures to the entrance of the MASH, ‘is indisposed – taken by the hand of fatigue from hours of toil,’ he emphasizes the last word, again, with a gesture with his hands – you make out a swan… or a dog. You couldn’t tell, really, ‘and as such, a gentleman’s duty is to ensure the comforts of the hard-working woman after a day of long toil! But you wouldn’t know that, would you, brigand!’

He thrusts the quarterstaff right in your face, stopping barely an inch from your nose.

‘Look, that’s nice and all,’ you cough into your fist – you’d reached three and a half before the action – again, trying to reason with him, ‘and I know that I’m late, but I have someone that I would like to see before I go back to the barracks. She’s hurt really bad and it would be really appreciated if you could let me pass. Akashi knows me.’

You want to add a quip about it being just after seven and just how tired could Akashi be, but you didn’t want anything that would leave your lips to have the chance to backfire on you. A jab at her job scope was always a way to end up on her bad side, as you’d learned in the days you’d known her.

‘Then you should have visited her in the day!’ He declares.

There’s a part of you that wants to point out the hypocrisy of him keeping the peace around here when his voice could have been loud enough to have even Abyssals clutch their ears.

‘I was busy.’ You don’t, however.

‘Too busy to be by her side?’ He snorts, turning up his nose at you. ‘What kind of man are you?’

Oh, that hurt. You would’ve rather taken a knock by that staff.

‘Enough.’

You turn to see Akashi, clad in her robes… with Shigure next to her. Apparently she’d taken the opportunity to sneak off and do the honors herself. You both share a thumbs-up.

‘Milady!’

She waves him off; the man clatters elsewhere. You don’t care.

‘Commander.’

‘I’m here to see Nagato.’

Akashi looks at you, pursing her lips. She looked tired, but not the type of haggard state that the MP had implied. Still, you weren’t one to test the limits of her fatigue and annoyance at you for arriving so late… not that you would’ve known that there’d been visiting hours on the program. You’d thought that as a Commander, you’d have executive access… however, you think that it would be for the best that you don’t that particular complaint.

You’re afraid that if the words special consideration ever left your lips, you’d be but a bloody stain on an operating table.

‘Come with me.’

You walk – jog – alongside her. Shigure is on her other side, skipping.

‘Couldn’t come here sooner?’ She gives you a light glare.

‘I would’ve… but if I had told her that I had come over without finishing any of her paperwork, I think I’d be the next to be admitted.’ You say so with the most honest tone you can muster – if there are truer facts in this world, they are not known to you.

She sighs, her annoyance making way for a grimace, which you both share.

‘True.’

You get to the foot of the matter.

‘So how is she?’

‘It took 8 hours to stabilize her core – she’s not yet fully recovered, but I’ll give her a day or two under watch before I send her back to your Division… and at least a day after that before she can operate at fighting capacity’ Akashi speeds up, throwing you a warning look – she had ended up like that under your command, after all. ‘She’s lucky.’

There’s one word you latch on.

‘Core?’

‘The Oni destabilized the outer layer of her core – if we’re going to go into comparisons, whatever it is that holds you people together and in place.’ You frown – you don’t get what she says at all. ‘A sort of foundation – we’re not human, in fact, if you want to go into details, we’re built inwards instead of outwards. Take away the frame and the whole thing comes tumbling down. We just look and feel this way to you.’ You nod dumbly, trying to comprehend the words. ‘The Oni tried to rip it away to get to her core – and did a damn fine job of it. Kaga told me about the ERS you pulled. Without that, it could’ve been a lot worse.’

‘So she’s all right, right?’ You ask, still concerned.

All 3 of you stop at a tent.

‘She needs rest. If she had been exposed any longer than she had, the outer later of the core would’ve completely decayed… the physical injuries were serious enough to warrant some extra concentrations of fata aqueous, but otherwise, healing is on the way.’ Akashi smiles reassuringly. ‘She’s a tough girl.’

That, she is.

She opens the canvas, gesturing you inside.

‘I’ll leave you to it.’

You couldn’t thoroughly describe just what it is that you felt, seeing her, clad in a white t-shirt, a pair of reading glasses adorning her face and scratching the back of her head with the pencil. Nagato – your friend, Sub-Commander and Battleship – looked none the worse for wear; if you hadn’t known any better you would’ve pegged her for just finding an excuse to stay in bed on a lazy weekend. She doesn’t notice either you or Shigure, her brows creased into a frown – whatever it was resting on her raised lap, it had her completely engrossed.

Wiping the corner of your eyes, wary of tears, you finally manage it in yourself to call out to her.

Hey there, you.’

Nagato looks up from the magazine as you approach her.

‘Commander.’ She greets you serenely, wearing a gentle smile. ‘Did you manage to fill out the grievance forms before you thought yourself befitting my regal presence, at least?’

‘All of it.’

‘All of the grievance forms?’

‘No, I mean, I got through all your paperwork.’ You clarify, moving to her bed and pulling up a chair. ‘You don’t have to worry about any backlogs from the last few days.’ You look thoughtful, biting a lip. ‘Or the next few, if I can manage it.’

Sub-Commander!’

Shigure makes her presence known to the both of you, raising a hand in greeting. She marches over by one of the other beds in the tent, taking one for her own. A quick glance around sees that no one else is occupying the temporary quarters… although you do see two messed-up beds with instruments around them and a pad on one of the two mattresses on the other row. So Nagato wasn’t the only KanMusu that appeared to be admitted.

She lets go of your cheek with one more smile, and you notice just what it was that she had been so focused on prior to your arrival.

‘Crossword?’

‘Helps pass the time.’ She answers quickly, picking up the magazine. ‘It’s either this… or I start listening to Naganami’s sonnets or Zuikaku’s preaching.’ She adds, her nose scrunching at the very idea of either prospect. ‘I did not know that there were KanMusu that found solace in religious dogma.’ She says in a rather dead tone.

You grimace – memories of your previous conversation with Zuikaku echo louder than ever.

She really, really needed to get laid. Cold turkey hadn’t done her any favors – and now you actually had an outsider’s point of view to do it.

‘Zuikaku’s been admitted?’ It hits you that she’d been in the operation before… and having seen her performance, you were hard-pressed to see that she’d gone through something as bad as Nagato – she’d even provided cover fire during the battle. ‘I thought she was fine.’

‘She had her chest half-ripped open the whole time.’ Nagato snorts.

You let out a low whistle.

‘She’s a character, but that girl’s a tough turkey.’

You've pretty much written the Commander and Nagato to be fairly intimate, especially with the scene with her not really being concerned over the sub's appearance in contrast to Takao. In social link terms, she's the one with the highest rank.

Id say the Commander and Nagato are pretty intimate, but the Commander doesn't know the boundaries yet, so hes playing it safe while Nagato is the one that generally gives the greenlight or initiates.
>>
‘I was going through your stack – there was this.’ You take out the red envelope that you’d taken from her pile, from the dress pocket of your top. ‘Should I be worried?’

Nagato gives you a playful look – the both of you share a chuckle as she takes it from you. Reaching over for a chair, you set yourself down, catching a quick glimpse of Shigure – who had not moved from her spot on the vacant bed since you arrived. If I weren’t for the light humming caught by your ear, you would have suspected she’d elected to take a nap.

The envelope is opened; she takes out the letter.

Oh.’

For the first time in – for the first time, period, you see Nagato’s eyes light up. She reads off the letter – it’s a moment for more firsts, too… Nagato’s body trembles with what seems to be her holding back a cry of delight; she reads off the words, saying the little girl’s name like a tiny prayer at the end. You watch her, content, a small smile creeping onto you as her she wipes at the corner of her eyes, touched. Maybe it was that it was just the fact that it came from a fan; it could have even been that Nagato had never been able to get used to such gratitude; but a part of you takes comfort in the fact that despite all their swerving and their loud cannons, something as simple as a thank you could reduce them to blubbering masses.

After a while, she sets it down, her cheeks brightly colored.

‘You didn’t tell me you had an action figure.’ You get in there, throwing her an amused look.

‘It’s not something you go around bragging about.’ She snorts – somehow, you don’t buy it. ‘A lot of us do; Kongou and her sisters make up the bulk of the shelves, if I’m being specific.’ She frowns, looking thoughtful and tapping her chin. ‘Although, there was one time I saw Sendai and Jintsuu on the best-seller list. I’m not sure; it’s not my job to keep up.’ She picks up the letter again, giving the photo a curious glance. ‘I didn’t think they still made me – I always thought that they got rid of them after the second season.’

Don’t keep up, huh?’

‘I – I had to be notified of the potential costs!’ Again, you don’t buy it. The stuttering is a dead giveaway. ‘Mine was too expensive to keep manufacturing without making a loss.’

‘What was so bad about it?’

‘Mine had this… launch function.’ She made a pressing motion with her thumb. ‘You flick a switch at the back and it fires from both cannons.’

‘That actually sounds pretty cool.’ You admit.

Nagato grumbles.

‘Parents thought it promoted violence.’

>>
>>591528
In the middle of the war, the Admiralty started to market the KanMusu in any way they could - they're not fully funded by the League, so they have to build up propaganda to get Joe Public on their side. This was due to, of course, their push against the Abyssals not being as big a knock as they hoped (As you have since been revealed). As per the Shaman's Journal, there were four countries that submitted to being the summoning grounds for the KanMusu because of their "good juju".

The Vanzer Kingdom (Practically a third of the US of A)
The Formerly Imperial Taiyouga (Japan)
The Romerian Alliance (An EU-ish state consisting of France, Poland, Belgium, Britain and of course, Germany)
NOT SPOILING THE LAST ONE

The Formerly Imperial Taiyouga, being uncharacteristically successful, managed to summon hundreds... and were cycling through their Commanders in those days like napkins (The last application process, the one with you, was an abnormality in that a large portion was highly gifted - you're one of the rejects because you just don't measure up) and wanted to "reach out" to the able and willing young men and women.

The result was 2 seasons of the most dreadful, annoying piece of animation in history. Suffice to say, it only ended up making people turn against the KanMusu more, likening them to robots spouting cliches rather than real supersoldiers/spirits/mahou shoujos fighting a losing battle.

Fubuki, still alive, will flay anyone who spouts her lines from it. In fact, she's in incarceration right now.
>>
>>591624

My guess is either when we go to jail on some sort of bullshit charge or we get designated as her parole officer.
>>
>>591744
Keep in mind that you already share your brain with NINE KanMusu. Two of which are a CARRIER and a BATTLESHIP.

I repeat: a CARRIER and a BATTLESHIP.
>>
>>591727
So what would've happened if we had chosen her as one of our personnel way back in thread 2? Would they have pulled her out of jail on some kind of parole?

‘I don’t think I’ve ever really appreciated what you do outside of Divisional confines.’ You confess, putting your leg on your knee. ‘You’re a miracle worker.’

Nagato gives you an understanding smile; if anyone could get just how much effort it actually took to sign on the dotted line, it was your Sub-Commander.

‘It’s not hard when you know how to do it.’ She says, all but outright bragging by now. ‘The thing about bureaucracy is that you can’t be indecisive – the moment you push something aside to be settled for later, it’s going to jump on you like a panther. Always be direct, always be firm with your yeses and nos. If you don’t know about something right in front of you, go and ask the department head of the one that handed it to you – and settle it then.’

You frown, remembering some of the more unsavory details of your task.

‘Wouldn’t calling for a meeting to clear it up be better for everyone involved?’ You reason – that’d been the go-to method when things just got too confusing for people in the kitchen; the bark for a team meeting usually came accompanied with a reason as to why your mothers reeked of elderberries and how your fathers were roosters in all but species.

‘It would.’ She nods, agreeing and crossing her arms. ‘It’d also waste time if the incident’s context falls under your scope.’

‘I kind of find it hard to say no.’ You admit, recalling the last few days of your tenure. ‘At least, lately, it’s felt that way.’

‘Commander loves EVERYONE!’

The both of you look to see Shigure, cross-legged on her bed, grinning widely. You give her a warning look – although it’s dampened by the amused upturn of your smile.

‘Still,’ Nagato catches your attention again; she’d picked up the magazine once more, you notice, ‘I’m thankful that you’re able to fill in for me without incident. Did you have any trouble?’

‘Mostly the algorithm proposals.’ You thin your lips – that hadn’t been pleasant.

‘What did you put for those?’ Nagato

‘I… told them I’d take it under advisement. I wrote down to look for referral from the Admiral.’

‘Oh, he’s not going to be happy with that.’ Nagato winces. ‘I’m specifically there so he doesn’t have to look at those, among other things.’

You frown; that’d been what the papers had asked for.

‘Why?’

‘Anything on that side goes right back to the people on R & D.’ She mentions crisply, thinning her lips as you had. ‘Who, of course, liaise with Court of Admirals… who, when are asked to sign off on things are very, very…’

‘Bitchy?’

‘Commander!’ She slaps your arm – although, you can tell that she’s very much trying to hold back a burst of laughter. ‘I was going to say obstructive.’

‘Same thing.’

‘Commander!’

‘The Admiralty… are they…’

You frown at the mention of the Admiralty – not that you so much didn’t like them, but whenever the name came into focus, you instantly found yourself clouded by the visage of the gaunt Court Representative. Still, you decide to address Nagato’s concerns; after the mess you had dropped her into, it was the least you could manage for her.

‘They gave us an official warning.’ Your lips thin into a line again – remembering the meeting with the Court Representative wasn’t pleasant. The way he talked and the way he addressed you seemed just so false; even if he had told the truth about rewarding the Base for their efforts. You’d even signed on the upgrades today. ‘Overall, though, they were rather thankful we took the matter into our own hands instead of waiting for them.’

‘That’s the best we could hope for, huh?’

The both of you share a smile – for some reason or other you take your hand and place it on Nagato’s. It’s rough, having seen the years of toil and action on the open seas… just like it had felt on countless occasions before.

‘I don’t think they’re going after anyone in particular… they just want us to know that they’re…’ You frown; you had trouble remembering the bulk of the details. After a while, you manage, ‘I think the message was that they’re happy we managed to complete the mission and that we told them we were going to do it without them, but they’re not happy that we managed to do it without their approval.’ You finish, satisfied with the address. ‘At least that’s the vibe I’m getting,’ you tentatively add, licking your lips, ‘or at least, that’s what the Court Rep told me.’

‘And Iowa?’

You hunch over slightly, surprised.

‘You know about Iowa?’

‘Zuikaku and Naganami told me.’ She clarifies. You see Nagato express a modicum of concern, an inquisitive gaze meeting your waiting one. ‘So do you know what’s going to happen to her?’

‘No,’ you shake your head, remembering the exact words that you had been told that morning, ‘the Court Rep said that… it’d be rude to discuss it at that time. I think they’ll come to a decision after they’ve fixed her up.’

Nagato nods, going back to the crossword. A strange, awkward silence reigns – something eats at you, at the both of you, something you can’t really discern; or something that you just had no desire to address.

‘She’s a Battleship.’

You say nothing.

‘Even from here, I can feel it.’ Nagato lets out a breath – try as you might, you can’t help but compare it to the ‘She’s powerful.’

‘Feeling threatened?’

‘If it would give you a better foot in this battle… if I hadn’t made it…’

You feel your lungs practically imploding at the ideal… she couldn’t be serious?

‘She would make an adequate replacement, wouldn’t she?’

‘No, not at all.’ You answer it in a heartbeat – and in doing so, quell your own need to yell at her.

‘Of course you’d say that.’

‘Of course I’d say it.’ You growl – maybe that need wasn’t that quelled.

Nagato looks up at you – you’d managed to stand up at some point, feeling particularly defensive. You don’t know why, but seeing Nagato so… so vulnerable and in doubt just made something rise in you, something that made you feel, for lack of a better word: livid. It was an outrage to even have this kind of suggestion presented to you: that she would be anything less than adequate; that she looked at herself and would turn to others and call herself a soft character. You’d seen – and been part of – more than enough of escapades that involved her pulling folks out of the fire. Sometimes, even literally.

You’d sooner believe that a Princess would declare you her best friend than doubt just how much Nagato brought to the table.

Damn straight, fatso!

‘Are you telling me that there’s someone out there right now who can sort out a Divisional schedule, deal with the mounds of paperwork involved in running this base, able to sort out the intricacies of bureaucracy, fend off an Oni attack and keep my ego in check?’ You cross your arms, peering down your nose at her. ‘Seriously?’

‘I’m not saying that!’ She sounds indignant, her cheeks red. ‘What I’m telling you is that – that she could be a better option if I ca – !’

‘Nagato,’ you cut her off – that had been a first. ‘there is no danger. I don’t even know why you’re even beating yourself up over this. You know for a fact that I’d put my life in your hands – for that matter, I’d put the lives of every single KanMusu in our Division in your hands; I could even argue that every single one of them would be willing to.’

‘Commander is right.’ Shigure chimes.

‘Thank you, Shigure.’

‘Sure.’ She raises a hand, waving it casually.

‘I’m just telling you I wouldn’t hold it against you if you would.’ She mutters, looking away. It’s surreal – you feel like the roles between the both of you had switched in some bizarre twist. ‘In fact, if I didn’t perform up to standards, it wouldn’t be – !’

She stops, gripping the mattress.

‘It’d be fine. She would have done better in my place.’

So that’s what this was about. The powerlessness. The weakness.

‘You didn’t do anything wrong.’ You sit on the bed, placing your hands over hers. ‘You didn’t do anything wrong.’

‘Commander,’ you turn to Shigure, who’d approached the bed, ‘I think… Nagato could use you more than the rest of us tonight.’

‘Okay.’ You quickly agree – there isn’t even a need for you to consider it for more than an instant – as far as you were concerned ‘Although, I’m going to need someone to – !’

‘N – No!’ Nagato cries out; it sounds like a choked cat more than a yelp of disagreement.

The both of you – you and Shigure – turn to her; you furrowing your brows and Shigure tilting her head in a bout of confusion.

‘No?’

‘No?’

Nagato, to your surprise, brings herself to her feet; face red and – you realize she’s clad in a rather tight pair of pajamas – her face contorted into one indignant scrunch. She immediately grabs your shoulders without a single thought to your own mind, pushing you towards the exit with what meager – meager for a weakened Battleship – effort she could muster. All the while, Shigure lets out a small whining sound, watching the both of you like some sort of comedy spectacle.

‘I am not so emotionally compromised to require my own officer to hold my hand through the night!’ She scolds you – you have to remind yourself that you are the one in charge here, not her. ‘This is absurd! Commander, I must insist that you tend to your duties.’

You don’t have any of it, however. As far as you were concerned, you had a friend and capable officer in a funk – a dangerous combination to be sure; and even if you cast your own personal feelings aside, it was still your duty to have her up to standard. If she harbored these thoughts any longer, it wouldn’t just affect her performance, it could end up with her getting someone or herself k – !’

Shaking your head, you push the thought away. This wasn’t the time.

‘I’m just sleeping over for the night.’ You insist, maneuvering yourself out of her hands. ‘I think I can make it back in time for work tomorrow morning; I’m a pretty early riser.’

‘I’m fine.’ Nagato growls now – it was amazing how she could turn from one mood to the other and still appear to be one of the best overall KanMusu at your disposal. If not the most valuable. ‘If you really care about my well-being, you’ll go back to the barracks and – !’

She doesn’t finish her sentence. Nagato immediately clutches her head – and you, almost as immediately, move to hold your arm around her; if she was going to trip and hurl like Tenryuu had at the time, you’d be ready for it. Using your prosthetic, you steadied her and held her forearm with the other; she wouldn’t buckle so violently with you there to brace her.

‘Do I need to get Akashi?’ You cast her a worried gaze – a part of you feared retribution from Akashi, but it was a very small part.

‘No, I… I’m still healing.’ She winces, raising a hand to her chest – she breathes heavily, throwing you a pitiful glance. ‘I can’t get too excited.’

Urgh... get rid of everything in that "sentence after the dash.

She manages to get to the bed. You sit her down and take a seat yourself, waiting for her to calm down. Nagato had never pegged you to be the excitable type – the closest you’d seen her to showing that kind of spontaneity was when she’d played had been when she’d taken

It's supposed to be:

She manages to get to the bed. You sit her down and take a seat yourself, waiting for her to calm down. Nagato had never pegged you to be the excitable type. You'd known her long enough to throw her as far and away from that category as possible.

This is why you don't type in two windows simultaneously, folks.
>>
‘I’m sorry.’ You apologize, letting out a smile of your own, bringing her back to the bed. ‘Still, I’m not leaving.’

‘Idiot.’ She replies – although, you notice it’s not without some degree of affection.

She manages to get to the bed. You sit her down and take a seat yourself, waiting for her to calm down. Nagato had never pegged you to be the excitable type. You'd known her long enough to throw her as far and away from that category as possible.

‘Do you know just what you’re putting yourself into putting so much stock on my return? On our return? They don’t prepare you for what’s coming in training – especially not for your kind.’

‘My kind?’

You raise an eyebrow; what kind of insinuation had that been?

‘The kind that wholly buys into that jargon.’ She says bluntly. ‘You told me before… you joined because of those posters, didn’t you?’

‘Yeah.’ You had joined because of those posters – but you’d stayed because it had turned out to be bigger than just you saying you wanted to prove your worth.

‘What I'm saying, is,’ she looks at you with a curious gaze; you get another sinking feeling in the pit of your stomach, ‘wouldn’t it be better for you to come to terms with us as war assets as much as we are… whatever we are to you?’

You had never wanted to slap a woman in person as hard as you did Nagato.

‘Considering our duties, wouldn’t it be a more comfortable truth for you?’

‘Now you’re just trying to get a rise from me.’ Your temper is barely held in check and your feelings bubble underneath your roiling surface, but you don’t do anything that you would regret. For now. ‘Comfortable? Convenient? What in the world do you think that kind of thinking is going to get me.’

‘I’m just trying to prepare you.’

‘Then I’ll bawl my eyes out when you go!’ You let it all out. There was no stopping it now. ‘I’ll hold a damn funeral in mourning! I’ll trip over the guilt that I sent you in over your head and asked for more than you could give! I’ll look to the damn ocean and think how could I have done this and cry! Are you telling me that you don’t want me to feel sad?! That I should just look at you like some kind of ammo casing and just tell myself why don’t I just reload?!’

Her eyes widen in shock – she probably hadn’t expected that.

Neither had you.

‘You know, this sounds stupid, but you guys are the best thing that’s ever happened to me.’ You choke out the next few words… you don’t know if this is even about Nagato anymore. ‘And when you’re gone… when it’s your time or any one of ours…’

You fix your eyes dead on with hers, as if daring her to say anything back.

‘Would you tell me I shouldn’t have had the right to care about you?’

She only lets out a defeated smile.

Never.'

This whole conversation makes me think back to a Patton quote:
"Wars are fought with weapons, but they are won by men."

Now I'm taking a kind on weird interpretation of the quote here, but a commander who views his soldiers as weapons, as disposable, will probably win most every battle, but he will lose the war. While a commander who views every troop on the field as a man, a life, might lose some battles, but his forces will live to fight another day, and it is he who will eventually win the war, so to speak.

That's pretty much the polar opposite of Patton's actual mindset, seeing as how he wasn't afraid to throw men into the meat-grinder at near Soviet levels, but I think my interpretation kind of applies to the Commander's mentality.

Just thought I'd wax a little half-baked philosophy between posts.
>>
>>597010
Patton was a crazy man. Why is it that most famous generals were somewhat crazy? I mean wasn't Grant drunk during most of his battles in the Civil war?

You go through the orange bag, struggling to find a good undershirt to don. You must look like a badger digging a home, throwing various pieces of wear all over the ground. Right next to you, sitting on the edge of her bed and regarding you with a look of absolute disdain… is Nagato, tapping her foot as she waits for you, clad in a towel and fresh out of the MASH staff showers (and attracting a few appreciative – and uncomfortable – whistles from the fellow men you shared them with). One of the staff had brought this so you could just take an undershirt from.

So far, there was no fit. They were all too small.

I told you.’

You ignore her. Just because she was right didn’t mean that lording it over you had been a privilege bestowed upon her.

‘I told you and you didn’t listen.’ She snarls – even without turning around you can tell that she’s glaring at you for it’s worth. ‘There could be a messenger at the base at this time and he’s going to find out my Commander is out dilly-dallying with a subordinate.’

You’re that subordinate.’ You mutter.

‘I’m sorry, sir,’ Nagato says in a voice – sweet and dangerous, that’s what it was, ‘but hadn’t I made it very much clear from my end, that since it was a working day, that I had TOLD YOU TO GO BACK TO THE BARRACKS?!’

‘You’re the one who had – !’

You stop mid-sentence; as much as Nagato was your subordinate, she was also capable of throwing you into a building across time if she so much as desired. Dropping your towel, you make a go for your pants; they’d already been pressed. You reach for the pair on the chair, donning them quickly and clumsily. You struggle with the belt – as you always did at times like this, but before long, have the whole thing done.

‘Your belt’s missing a loop.’

Groaning, you raise your arms – Nagato automatically moves to correct your mistake.

Jealous… so jealous…’ You hear Naganami mutter – she and Zuikaku had apparently designated you to be your focus for the morning.

‘How obscene.’ Zuikaku – who else – harrumphs, never mind that she was very much topless save for the wrapping around her breasts. ‘May the circles strike them down for their display.’

You hear the rustle of the flaps – you don’t even have to turn around to know just who it was.

‘Fairy magic is not for getting wrinkles out of clothes, sir.’ Akashi grumbles.

You hear another rustle, instantly spinning around to catch your top, fully pressed. Giving her a thankful look – one that she returns with an obscene gesture and a click of her tongue. You quickly put it on – the clocks read that it was half past 9.

‘I’m sorry, I’m in a bit of a rush!’ You give an apologetic bow, kissing Nagato on the cheek.

Oh wait, wrong KanMusu.

Akashi holds a scalpel to your throat, smiling.

Go.’

You can’t make out what it is you see. A warped sensation seems to have taken ahold of your senses – you go deep, deep… and out again. The word time makes no more sense to you than applicable quadratic theory; all of which are lost in an instant and eternity of existence. You feel the breath of aeons upon you, rumbling and calling to one another, like eldritch beings instead of conceptual personifications. Your hands – yes, your hands – return to you, you are aware of them now – more than you had been before; this existence, this flesh, it is but temporary. It is nothing more than the vessel, the transport that would bring you to the next plane of being, the Heaven of Heavens.

‘Oh, was that you corner, girls?’

The buggy speeds along as you find yourself violently lurching – the Old Man sat in the driver’s seat, his eyes on you and the rest of your passengers. You look back to check on the three KanMusu. Teruzuki had been shoved into the corner of her seat from the incredible, impossible sides of G pulled by the motions of the Old Man; she looked like she could have squeezed into a can without much effort. Inazuma, Ikazuchi’s sister, and Kawakaze were hugging each other, screaming wordlessly – not that it mattered. To the Old Man, nothing but the thrill of breaking the laws of time, space and road safety meant more than a sliver to him. Under your breath, you mutter a prayer.

The colors swirl, the street and the sky become one.

He had turned down another corner at speed – not a speed – at speed. It is fright that takes you over.

‘I know, I know, silly me, right?’ He grins cheerfully.

Everything comes to a halt. You find yourself breaking out in a cold sweat, clutching the dashboard as though it was your one link to the world. You shudder as your hand slowly lets go; the Old Man looks at you, oblivious to the horror he had wrought upon you four. The three of them look at you fearfully, and you look right back at them.

‘Hang on, I’ll give you a ride back. Should be two minutes tops!’

You couldn’t leave them in here.

Commander.’

‘I – It’s okay, Old Man,’ you give him your biggest, brightest smile. ‘I – I need a few things delivered from the barracks to the office. Come on, girls.’

Faster than you thought you were able, the four of you jump out of the buggy, relishing the sensation like you had never before.

The man grins at you as he zooms off.

Teruzuki and the rest of you give you bows of gratitude, before running off themselves. Inazuma, in tears, has to have her hand held by Kawakaze.

At least you weren’t that late.

‘Good morning, Commander.’

Your eyes widen in shock… it couldn’t be…

‘Good to see you, sir.’ You break into a salute.

‘Oh, I highly doubt that’s the case for you.’ He darkly chuckles.

You don’t take the bait – smoothly dropping your salute, you drop into a rigid stance. There was no sense in antagonizing him; after what had happened the last few weeks and the Submarine incoming from the Court, the last thing that you wanted right now was to give him a reason to write your name in red ink.

‘Still, it’s an appreciated gesture.’ He gives you an appreciative smile – or an attempt at an appreciative smile; it felt more like a wolf baring its fangs to its prey.

You don’t return it.

‘May I inquire as to where you have been this morning?’ He gives the barracks a quick glance – even behind those dark glasses, you can tell that there was an inquisitive gaze. He was prodding you. ‘I would have thought that you would be inside. Your KanMusu seemed to imply that you had… other duties to tend to.’

‘I was visiting my Sub-Commander.’ You answer bluntly, honestly – but not challengingly.

‘Oh?’ He puts his hands behind his back, raising his chin, probably to see if you had given away any other tells.

He needn’t have bothered – it wasn’t something that you would have hidden away, anyway. The facts were clear enough. Seeing him wait for a clearer explanation on your whereabouts, you go on.

‘She was injured on the last sortie.’ You explain. ‘I fell asleep on MASH premises.’

He lets out a laugh, throwing his head back. You don’t give him the satisfaction of a reaction, keeping your rigid form. Whatever the Admiral and the Grand Lieutenant had against each other, it had nothing to do with you; what you had with the Grand Lieutenant was an acquaintanceship. He was a man you had to respect on a professional level, whether you wished to or not – you couldn’t get away with a sock in the jaw like the Admiral had; that much you know.

That didn’t stop you from wishing the Admiral was by your side to tell him to buzz off, though.

‘Keeping things professional, I hope?’

You’re spared from answering the question by the sound of rapid footsteps – you look behind the Grand Lieutenant to see your two attendants, folders tucked and held, rushing over to you like an oasis in a desert. The Grand Lieutenant smirks as they ignore him completely, stopping right in front of you.

‘Commander, we’ve been looking for you!’ the lanky one calls out ‘Oh, uh… how do you do?’

‘Gentlemen, this is the Grand Lieutenant.’

They both gape, dropping their articles and clumsily saluting after. The Grand Lieutenant chuckles audibly.

‘I would like to borrow your Commander for a while.’ He says, deceptively courteous. ‘We have some urgent business to tend to.’

The Grand Lieutenant gestures to you to follow him.

The both of you make your way to the gazebo overlooking the morning sea. You notice that, for the first time in a week, the clouds are dark – there’d be rain today, or tonight. You also notice that the gazebo had been fixed up quite a bit since you’d arrived – the roof was at least properly thatched now. The Grand Lieutenant leans against one of the beams, gesturing for you to take a seat.

‘What’s this about, sir?’ You question him – already suspicious of the Admiral’s absence but not willing to take an accusing stance just yet.

‘To the point, aren’t you?’

You don’t react to his small laugh. The Grand Lieutenant seems pleased enough that you hadn’t spout anything to throw yourself – or him – off the crux of the matter; for you, it’s more for your continued survival under the Admiralty’s flag. Having already drawn the attention of the Submarines, you really didn’t want further reason to turn the Grand Lieutenant against you – there was already so much he could do but had chosen not to, for one reason or the other.

It was best to just play your part and keep the professionalism up. You couldn’t do much else from your position.

‘As of 0600 hours this morning by our hands… and hopefully, before noon, by the signature of the Yokosuka Admiral, the Battleship Iowa, formerly of Fairy-Human Joint Operations of the Vanzer Kingdom’s Yorktown Base is to change her default designation of transfer from Kure to Yokosuka.’ He says, simply, as though he was reading off the funny section of a newspaper. He gives – or again, tries – to give you a smile, like a game show host congratulating a winner. ‘She’ll be under your flag for the time being.’

You don’t take it for one minute. Not for a second, either.

‘If she’s going to be under the base’s flag, that would mean that she’ll be under the Admiral’s direct command.’ You try to keep the accusation out of your voice the best you can. His smirk raises your ire, but you still needed to know more. ‘What would the courtesy be in telling me something that I wouldn’t question otherwise, sir?’

‘Well, for one, it’s polite,’ he takes off his sunglasses, rubbing at the lenses with a handkerchief, ‘and aren’t you curious as to why Iowa has been transferred here on a permanent basis.’

You wait for his answer, not willing to let anything slip until you had the full story.

‘The Vanzerians gave up on opening a second summoning module after Iowa’s summoning. She was to be assigned to us to support our effort after their campaign fell short. She was meant to be delivered to us weeks ago.’

That, you already knew.

I can't recall, but was there ever a given reason for why our entire division is level 1? Do upgrades and equipment not carry over when getting transferred to a new CO? Or did something happen to warrant a downgrade?
>>
>>597546
1. Equipment requires maintenance to sustain. The way Commanders/Vice-Admirals cycle through KanMusu, you are going to get hit really bad one day with unlucky rolls and the equipment is going to need to be maintained through level ups.

2. They just barely survived an assault. Resources are scarce and only able to be dished out when you perform to a level that allows the Admiralty some weight to request more funding.

3. It wouldn't make sense to make everyone a high level to start with.
>>
>>597555
>3. It wouldn't make sense to make everyone a high level to start with.
I know, I know, just wondering if there was a Watsonian reason for it, since this war's been going on for 10 years and even Hiei was a 6/5/6 before her downgrade.

Hiei wasn't caught up in the defense. If you recall, she was on leave. She only came back to discover, with her sisters, that their base had been ravaged in the assault. Her equipment is only such because there isn't adequate Kantai Steel transmutated from raw materials.

If any of the KanMusu remember their past, I'm betting they ain't gonna be so forgiving so easily. Brits want to avenge Hood, Polandbotes want revenge for the invasion, Frenchies hate both Nazis and Brits, Germans huddle up because they've pissed off everybody around them...

Although at least the U-boat fleet's found a new job: keeping everybody in line
>>
>>597627
Romeria contains those nation's analogues in this world. However, given the history of war on this Earth, it's out of necessity rather than greed. Considering Not!Africa really doesn't give a fuck about the KanMusu/Abyssal conflict because they're in a constant state of war and could take over the Bloc if they put their heads to it...

That and they physically beat back a Resident Evil-esque bioweapon. Not!Africa is a scary place to be.

They do. However, talking about your past is something they only do with their Commanders or whoever they're close with. However, one of the requirements of them being able to be summoned is that they understand their past sins and that this is a sort of second chance.

‘How could it have been so hard to summon KanMusu there?’ You frown. As curious as you were about what the Grand Lieutenant was getting at, there was a part of you that nagged about this particular issue. ‘If we’re able to summon hundreds here, then… sir?’

After that dining table conversation, you really felt like having that particular itch scratched – hopefully he wouldn’t attempt to unscrew your head. To your surprise, and for the first time, you see the Grand Lieutenant… hesitant. A hum of thought rumbles in his throat as you wait for his answer; you’re a lot more uneasy than you

‘We don’t know.’ He answers, uncrossing his arms. ‘That is the problem. Neither do we know why we haven’t been able to for the last five years.’

‘When was Iowa summoned?’ You frown even more, trying to piece things together – thus far, you find no success.

‘Seven years ago.’ He replies, regarding you. ‘In fact, her successfully summoning was the last thing they communicated to us prior to the news of her transfer.’

‘You didn’t think it would be suspicious that they’d send their only line of defense – a KanMusu powerful enough to endure three weeks of survival out in the wilderness crossing maybe half the ocean… and survive a bunch of – !’

‘We did not have news of her transfer until it was made.’ He interrupts you.

‘Wouldn’t that just have made it more suspicious?!’

Even through those shades, you can tell that he’s very much glaring at you – whether in annoyance or as a defensive reaction, you can’t tell yourself. You back down slightly, waiting for him to speak. It wouldn’t do you any good if you had tried so hard so far to not antagonize him only to end up doing so. Still, you can’t help but be a little pleased with yourself that you’d managed to be a small, annoying prick in his stoic hide.

Of course.’ He answers crisply. ‘Which was why we did not prioritize her rescue beyond a series of scouting runs near our borders – if she was any further out than what we perceived would be our limits, which she was, we would not risk any more losses to

‘So you were willing to let her go.’

‘She was an acceptable loss.’ he answers, nodding. There’s no remorse you can feel behind the action: just cold hard fact. ‘As she wasn’t accounted for in the first place when we were licking our wounds, she wasn’t a factor we would consider after. That is the stance we had taken.’

You find it a little bit scary that there’s a part of you that agrees with him.

‘We’re not here to save lives, Commander.’ He looks right at you, the unflinching figure of authority. ‘We’re here to win a war.’

It's like this. Imagine your Stream as something you have to work out. The more you get used to it, the more muscles it gains, the fitter it gets... and the more KanMusu you can lift. You don't know WHAT your limit is - and it's dependent on how much baggage the KanMusu brings. The rule of thumb is, though: the more powerful the KanMusu, the more she accommodates and the more stress she puts on you after a Stream.

You're welcome to try, but it'll be a short few threads.

‘Why tell me this personally?’

‘Because I don’t know you.’ He laughs – there’s something sinister behind it but you don’t dare point it out… or fix yourself on it. ‘I don’t know if I can trust you.’

Still, you can’t help but put your guard up.

‘However, because I do not know you, you are an anomaly.’ He elaborates further. ‘Which means you are free to, as people say, exploit and approach.’

For the first time, the both of you share an understanding smirk between yourselves. There is no rank, no protocol – just two tigers sizing each other up while circling a feast that neither of you were willing to share with the other. You let out a small chortle, rubbing the back of your neck. There was no use to be that tense.

‘So you need me for something.’ You snort, regarding him. ‘Couldn’t be direct?’

‘Not my style.’

You both share a laugh.

Heaven forbid, you were actually starting find him charismatic enough to invite him over for a drink.

‘We’ve come into information – from Iowa’s mouth herself – that the Vanzer Kingdom and its neighbors have pulled out of the war.’ He gets down to business straight away. ‘Their government has all but evacuated their coasts and pushed inland – them sending Iowa over, allegedly, was as a statement of intent on their feelings on the war. They’ll be doing this, according to her… on their own terms.’ You find yourself agape. The Grand Lieutenant goes on, with a hint of disgust in his voice. ‘They do not wish us, nor do they want the Shamans, to intervene on their new… policy.’

‘That’s stupid.’ You don’t mean to sound so crude, but the word just befitted such a decision. ‘So they exiled her because she couldn’t fix it overnight?’

‘I never said it was exile.’

‘You don’t have to.' You snap. ‘What does this have to do with me?’

‘We’re not sure whether we’re going to trust her on that information.’

Immediately, you don’t like where the train of thought goes – the assumptions pile up one after the other and you find things slowly falling into place more neatly than you had expected.

‘What I’m asking of you, Commander, is for you to keep an eye on her – to report her activity and development to me and only me.’ He voices out. ‘You are to keep as tight or as loose a hold on our guest. But you are to treat her with caution; we do not know what she is capable of… or where her loyalties truly lie.’

There was that feeling again.

‘How’re you going to have me manage that?’

You really didn’t like where this was going.

‘What about the Submarine on my case?’

Maybe there was something you could get out of this.

‘She will still be assigned, of course.’ He answers, as though you had asked the most obvious thing in the world. ‘In fact, she’s been scheduled to arrive the day after tomorrow.’

You press on a little bit more – it was one thing to be trusted to do the dirty work; it was another to do the dirty work and be scrutinized for it at the same time. The idea of the Submarine coming over had been one that you hadn’t particularly enjoyed but had come to terms with; still, if you had the opportunity to be rid of it…

‘A little unfair, don’t you think, sir?’ You point out, narrowing your eyes. ‘I do the duty of being your dog and you still don’t call of the whips.’

He doesn’t fall for it.

‘Your activities have done a lot of damage to our efforts, Commander – almost as much as you’ve helped us gain. We’ve only barely recovered from that SNAFU you called a negotiation attempt, never mind the disastrous PR that you’ve afforded the Admiralty by taking former gang members under your wing.’

Reeling from the accusation – and the truth – you really can’t help but think that his ability to lay it all out there was one of the reasons that he was a Grand Lieutenant despite being barely a bracket older than you.

‘Still,’ you brighten slightly; noticing this, he puts his hands behind his back, chortling, ‘it’s not something we’re not prepared to overlook should there be interests present that you’re able to undertake on our behalf.’

You knew it had to be to good to be true.

‘Is that a threat?’ You grit out, forcing a smile.

‘It is a fact.’ He looks to the ocean, a smile on his features, mirroring yours. ‘There is nothing gained without something lost in return.’ He shoots you a glance; behind the glasses you can’t tell whether it is one of condescension or assurance. ‘In this instance, that would be… well, considering the circumstances, whatever we damn well deem fit.’

‘You’re expecting me to just take it?’ You don’t waver; he was still asking you. ‘This isn’t just a normal request.’

‘Which is why I have taken the most unconventional candidate for the task.’

‘Sir,’ you raise your hand, damning regulations. This was more than just a simple snitch, ‘you’re expecting me to outmaneuver a Submarine who’s going to be on my ass, keep an eye on a KanMusu you suspect might have loyalties elsewhere and want me to do it under the nose of the Admiral and the Vice-Admiral.’

‘Yes.’ He nods.

‘You trust me with this?’

His smile widens.

‘I think I’ve made it clear I don’t, Commander.’

We're watching her the way the sub is watching us, so probably no Stream linking. Also, because we'd go insane.

I'll give you folks some time to discuss this as it's a big decision to make.

I was more worried about the possibility of the GL making us get rid of Nagato to have Iowa in our division. Which would be a on-go for me.

Could be worse, i mean she wont like us right away but neither did Nachi and she turned out to be a good soldier, we'll fix all the issues with time, after all a BB is a strong force to reckon with, and were gonna have 2. Also our stream already contains Kaga's princess killing PTSD so it cant get much worse, we can always do more stream training if need be.

‘I’m just keeping an eye on her?’ You question, unsure. Your voice wavers, and you appear firm. ‘And I’ll be reporting to you?’

‘Yes.’

‘Is this going to appear on my record?’

He doesn’t answer, instead taking the opportunity to chortle. Immediately, you remember just why you didn’t like him – just why, despite his position and his prowess, he was no more than another agenda-filled gasbag with more power in his little finger than you had in your whole body. Every fiber in your being says that it isn’t a good idea, that whatever it was that you were going for was akin to a deal with forces beyond your imagining. The truth of the matter, though… was simple. He had you – the moment he walked in with those shades and that trench coat, he knew what you would go for and how to dangle it.

It was a frustrating, yet absolute truth.

You raise your eye – you didn’t know you had averted them – to him, your eyepatch growing seemingly more restrictive than it had any right to be. It’s hard for you to swallow your pride and follow just how and where he had led you, but you do anyway.

‘Anything funny, and I’m telling you… rank won’t matter.’ Your pride may be gone, but the warning tone in your voice throws it out there: that if anything about this turns on you without prior warning, if he so much as twisted this on its head… there wouldn’t be a force in the land that would stop you. ‘Grand Lieutenant.’

‘Is that a threat, Commander?’

Your face neutral, you slowly approach him.

‘No.’ You assure him, holding out a hand to shake. ‘It’s a fact, sir.’

He doesn’t take it.

With a nod and a turn, he walks away. Seeing his retreating back, you wonder just why you’d done that – bravado? Machismo? It didn’t really matter. You may not have socked him one – as much as he deserved it for being such a prick – but you did feel that you had made the terms, at least, be more apparent from your end. Namely, that if he tried anything funny, that they would need more than just a crowbar to pry your hands from his neck.

Not so much you, more that if anything he had in mind would go back to your team. You had enough of a hide to take a boss’s unreasonable orders.

Running a hand through your hair and hoping things turn out for the best, you make your way to the barracks. Opening the door and walking down the hall, you see your men already setting up the desk, ready to get their work started.

‘All right, sir.’ The lanky attendant looks up from a folder in his hands. ‘Which one do you want to do?’

‘Are we behind on anything?’ You inquire.

Your lanky attendant – and your bulky attendant – leap for the file in an almost comedic show of slapstick, fighting over who would declare the articles for the day. You move for them to stop, but really find yourself much too amused by them squeaking and biting out curses, instead crossing your arms and waiting for them to get it over and done with. After about three minutes and a flurry of insults regarding weight, the size of one’s unmentionables and a lecture about the intricacies of wedgie-pulling, you find the lanky attendant victorious, holding the file aloft as though it was a trophy as your bulky attendant walks away, dejected.

‘Well, sir, we’re, um, kind of behind on Base Duties and Supplementary Duties.’ He goes through the file like it was some sort of religious scripture. You nod at him to continue. ‘Nagato-san’s stack is, well… stacked but not quite overflowing and Division Duties aren’t that heavy.

‘So, uh, what you wanna get done first, Commander?’ Your bulky attendant inquires.

You adopt a thoughtful pose. Which one indeed?

‘Remind me again why I’m doing this, gentlemen?’

It was almost noon and you hadn’t even been through the base duties pile that was about Yuubari’s requests… and Yuubari’s denials, for that matter. The whole thing read like some sick excuse of a law essay of some sort, with jargon here and there that actually made you wish you were in a university hall so you could ascertain knowledge to decide whether or not to confirm or deny some of the requests for transfers and what to sign off. It’s all, in short, an exercise in patience for you.

‘Yuubari does quite a bit, doesn’t she?’ You grimace, setting down the paper.

You wish you had a real office chair – then you could wheel around and spin in an effort to procrastinate. Instead, here you were, working through the least desirable part of your job. Tapping your table, you look to your two attendants; both of them – to your envy – were going through the items like no one’s business. In fact, it wouldn’t even be a stretch to say that the both of them combined had caught up with you in terms of sheer load.

‘The Quartermaster does quite a bit of work, yeah.’ The both of them share a look. ‘She needs the officers to coordinate to get things running, though.’

‘Thought she was independent.’ You cross your arms, leaning in your chair.

‘It’s a bit of a surprise to know she’s not as overloaded as Nagato is.’ You confess – with her disposition, you would have expected the worse. ‘Although, considering how hands-on she is, I wouldn’t put it past her to just shove thi – !’

‘C – Commander!’ The bulky attendant yells out, his face red.

‘What?’ You shrug. ‘I’m just saying.’

After an hour, you find yourself looking at several small sorted stacks, each with the proper stamp and seal. Yuubari would sleep soundly knowing that you hadn’t denied her calibration and attunement request… but you’re leaning towards a threat from her in regards to the supply request. Two stacks, for you, were more than enough.

Something catches your eye.

‘This should be filed in District Management.’ You pick up the file, going through it – this had been due the day before, but the jargon all over it had somehow pushed the extension date to… the next decade. ‘Why is it on the base folder?’

The lanky attendant takes it from you.

‘Oh, I think…’ He bites his lip, giving you an apologetic look. ‘I’m sorry sir, that’s my mistake. Do you want me to deliver this to the Admiral or Ooyodo-san?’

You think carefully.

‘I think Ooyodo can make more use of it. Are you able to do it now?’

He’s gone in a flash… at least, you think he is – soon after, there is a loud knock on the door.

‘Hang on, I got it.’

You raise a hand to your attendant, who immediately sits himself down – you needed a break from the rustle and bustle of paperwork, and this gave you the perfect excuse to actually do something other than scribble your signature in ink over and over again. Walking down the hall, you head straight for the door… opening to reveal an MP with a troubled visage. He hastily salutes you – you give one right back, wondering just what the matter could be. The last time you’d seen an MP this nervous had been on the day you had three of them shot and transported inland.

‘Good afternoon, sir,’ he quickly drops into a bow – almost knocking into you in the process – and raises himself back up, that troubled look still on his face, ‘I’m sorry to bother you, sir, but there’s a bit of a problem.’

‘What problem would that be?’ You inquire – you don’t like the sound of it at all, but if it was something he thought that you would be able to deal with – or something that required your specific attentions, you suppose you could at least hear him out. ‘It’s not an Abyssal attack, is it?’

It couldn’t be, of course. If there had been one, you’d already be dead or Ooyodo would be at the door to drag you to the RAY.

He laughs nervously, rubbing the back of his head. Something was definitely off.

‘Well, sir, you see – !’

HEY EVERYONE!’

You immediately pop your head to get a better look at the source of the sound… only to find yourself white with shock at what you were seeing.

It was a stage.

An honest-to-goodness, performance stage. Complete with backdrop – several stars of varying color – a huge set of speakers on either side. Taking a closer look you notice that it was a mobile stage, installed onto a truck – the head of which was seemingly covered in glitter; you see a man in a pinstripe suit leaning against the door, raising a hand and riling up the… crowd? Yes, you notice now – how silly of you to not be able to notice the small gathering of 50 or so civilians on your premise, hollering and whistling at the object of their affections – a woman on the stage.

A young and attractive woman on stage.

She was blonde – dyed or not, you don’t really care, but it was definitely glittering. She was really pretty – and young – but you’re much too shocked by the situation to fully appreciate it. Her dress was some weird amalgam of a ringmaster’s outfit, a wedding dress and an officer’s hat – and she was strutting her stuff as though she owned the place. You notice her not paying any attention to anyone but the adoring masses, small as they are, calling for her.

You find yourself flabbergasted.

It is the only way to describe it.

The crowd reaches a din you wouldn’t have pegged for such a small crowd. Your brain tries to register the fact that there was apparently a concert going on on your premises. The young lady reaches into the air, as smoke appears on the small screen and the raggedy crowd, mainly made up of civilians who are in all manner of dress, but altogether rather battered – she yells out something, you can’t make it out – and they cheer even louder.

Immediately, you make a decision. There is no need to delegate or hesitate – you knew what had to be done.

You take a step back, tip your invisible hat… and slam the door shut.

Almost immediately, there is a rap on the door… and the muffled sound of the MP’s voice.

‘Um, sir, is there – ?’

‘Nope.’You interrupt him mid-sentence, unwilling to have him pry you open like a can of tuna so you could sort it out.

‘But they’re tresspa – !’

‘Nope.’ Again, you reply, shaking your head – if they wanted to do whatever it was they wanted to do, they could go on ahead and do it, as far as you were concerned.

‘Sir?’

You turn around to see our bulky assistant, standing in the hallway with a confused expression on his face. You give him your biggest, most reassuring smile, and patting him on the shoulder, gesture him to follow you back to the desk. There was much to be done, and you didn’t have enough hours in the day to do them all. Glancing at the clock on the wall, you wonder what was taking your lanky attendant so long; perhaps Ooyodo was a bit more annoyed at being referred back to on a document that she didn’t think was worthy of her attentions. Whatever it was, though, you’d put him through the paces when he got back – but for now

‘Let’s get back to work.’ You gesture to him, again, to follow you – sitting behind the table,

‘Who was it, sir?’

‘Some MP that wanted me to sort out crowd trouble.’ You wave it off; you take a piece of paper from the table that had been unsigned – maybe you could get started on this one while you waited for your other attendant to return?

‘Oh.’ He frowns, taking his seat.

You lean back, rumbling.

What crowd trouble?’ He frowns, peering at you curiously.

You open your mouth to sarcastically remark about a truck that had no business being on a compound owned by the Admiralty, but are interrupted by the sound of the front door slamming open… and letting in a blast of music and the sounds of a cheering crowd. Your lanky attendant shows his head, grinning ear-to-ear.

‘Dude, what are you doing in here?!’ He practically springs into the room, hopping in place. ‘LEIA’s singing out there!’

‘She is?!’

‘She is!’ Your lanky attendant exclaims excitedly. ‘Commander, come see!’

‘You gentlemen go on ahead. I have work to do.’

Their mouths go slightly agape – a guilty look comes upon their features as they shuffle in place, very much regretting that they had thrown their usual discipline with you – for what it was worth, anyway – out of the window and acted like a pair of excitable schoolgirls. Whoever that young lady outside was, she had a hold on folks who hadn’t broken 20… and strict as you strive to be be, you can’t help but remember when you had been a giddy mess – usually where the Four Horsemen were involved.

Which, to be frank, wasn’t that long ago. In fact, long ago would be a bit of a stretch, you reckon.

‘O – Oh, sir, sorry, we’ll – !’

You’re shaken from your reverie… and immediately raise a hand, indicating that their behavior – though boorish – was definitely understandable. You make a move to shoo them out – they hesitate, waiting for your verbal approval… which, standing behind your desk, you give.

Go.’ You gesture towards the sound of the crowd and the music. ‘I can manage this.’ You assure them ‘Go and be boys.’

They instantly light up, dropping into two clumsy salutes before rushing right into the hall.

‘AND CLOSE THE DOOR!’

They do so with a loud slam, and shaking your head, you drop into your chair.

Go and be boys.’ You shake your head again, musing – you weren’t that old yet. ‘Hah.’

Picking up a folder for the Supplementary items on the agenda, you brighten slightly yourself, realizing that this was something more your speed. Rather than dealing with logistic affairs that required department upon department, it was rather easy to sort out this particular part. It was still a mess, to be sure, but compared to the rest of the workload, it was at least direct and focused on the contractors that had been hired to fix up your particular section of town – for whatever measure of it they held, anyway.

Going through the file for the better part of an hour, you learn that the unused plot in your compound had several proposals put forward by some crew members – all of the suggestions, however, are nonsensical. Shield generators, ramen stands, before long your only task boiled down to stamping NO over and over again.

Thank you! Thank you!’

You groan – you had told them to shut the – were those footsteps? In the hall?

Your two attendants march in, their faces flashing huge grins as the lady that had been on the truck, still clad in that outfit, nests between them, her own features flushed.

‘Sir, This is my girlfriend!’ The fat attendant proudly declares. ‘LEIA, this is the Commander. Total badass.’

You look from the young lady to your bulky attendant to your lanky attendant, a feeling of confusion setting into your mind. Something hits you like a straight jab in the throat, your brain failing in the realization process to wholly compute the words – if they ever were truth – and the exhibition before you. The lady, LEIA, bows respectfully, prompting you to remember that even if this state, you had to act in a manner befitting your station. You almost knock your knee against the desk, pushing back your chair, walking around to properly greet her.

‘Pleased to meet you.’

You hold out a hand for her to shake. She takes it, firmly and at the same time, softly – they’re dainty little digits, but you feel a certain calloused, worked quality to them.

‘It’s an honor to meet you, Commander.’ LEIA bows again – her hat slips off her, only to be caught by her alleged boyfriend, your attendant, before it hit the floor. She gives an apologetic smile to go with the tilt of her head. ‘Hope the ruckus wasn’t too big?’

You don’t answer her, your confusion still very much building up. The absurdity of the situation still fails to register as again, you spare all three of them glances… before looking right behind them and wondering if any of your KanMusu were around. You wouldn’t put it past Nachi or Murakumo to think it would be funny to see you balk at the sheer nonsense of the situation; still, as an Officer under the Admiralty, you try to keep calm. A direct address would do for now – a few calm, contextual questions… and hopefully, by the end, the world wouldn’t have imploded.

You force a smile, turning to the man who had either told a great lie… or the most incredible of truths.

Attendant, what’s – ?’

He gives you a confused look… glancing to LEIA and to the lanky attendant.

‘I told you, sir, yesterday?’ He gives a small frown. ‘My girlfriend would be visiting?’

You frown yourself; he hadn’t – wait, he had said so. You spare her another glance – her features turn from having a glittering smile to a confused frown, mirroring you… before giving you a troubled glance.

‘Was I interrupting anything?’ She voices with a worried tone.

Assuring her, you

‘Commander, I told you, right?’

‘Yes – you told me that she would be visiting around noon.’ You straighten your collar, indicating your acknowledgment of the disclosure.

He did, however, withhold on the details. You had not expected his girlfriend to have a… presence.

‘I’m sorry!’ She slaps her hands together, looking very much so. ‘I would’ve been here earlier, but…’

She fixes her gaze on you.

‘I trust you’re giving him all he can handle?’

I mean sure i guess she's famous, but do we really care that much? We met our childhood hero Hiei before, so there shouldn't be that much of a reaction from this by comparison.

‘He and his friend have been very helpful.’ You reply sincerely.

‘Has he?’ She crosses her arms, giving you a suspicious look – you find yourself taking a step back; rather than a girlfriend, you feel like you’re face-to-face with an overly-obnoxious mother hen… not that the two were mutually exclusive.

‘I assure you, they’ve both pulled me out of a few fires.’ You raise a hand, giving a diplomatic smile to quell her flames. An inkling of a feeling inside you suspected that she wouldn’t be quenched so easily, though; you follow up by taking a proud step towards the bulky attendant, who looks at you in confusion. ‘I don’t know if I could manage without them. They’re fine attendants.’

‘You like us?’

The smile falters a little. Just a little.

‘Yes, Mr Attendant, I like the both of you very much.’ You give a hearty chuckle, the corners of your mouth at this point not quite reaching for the corners of your eyes. Stepping back, you puff your chest. Some discipline would do just to show how much you meant business to this lady. This LEIA. ‘So much so that I know I can trust that the both of you will have whatever workload you have left done before the end of this fine day?’

She smacks the back of his head – rather hard, if the pout of annoyance that follows is any indication. Turning to him, she practically looms over his now-shrinking frame. You blink – there was a bit of a height difference; she was closer to your height than she was to him… you hadn’t noticed just how much smaller he was compared to you. He lifts her hat as though it is some sort of barrier, warding her away.

You’re skipping out on work?!’ She shrills – rather impressively, you might add.

‘W – Well, you were at the door and – !’

She grabs his head, turning him about-face… before grabbing his taller, lankier, friend and does the same.

‘You – !’ She grits out, bowing. ‘I humbly apologize for intruding, Commander! Bow, dangit!’

‘Hey, who – ?’

At the protest, she shoves their heads downwards in a forced bow. Her boyfriend even drops his hat.

‘You’re using me as an excuse to skip on work, are you?’ ‘I can’t believe you!’ ‘You too!’

‘But – !’

‘They both sincerely apologize for such a display!’ You can’t help but chuckle – she is a rather prime example of a mother hen. ‘I assure you that the both of them will have their work done – !’

‘Now wait a minute, you know I can’t just – !’ Your bulky attendant tries to straighten himself…

Bow!’

Only to, once more, be the evidence to this feisty young lady’s strength.

What an odd afternoon this had turned out to be.

‘It’s no bother. He’s a hard worker at the desk or away from it.’ Looking to your other attendant, you decide that it wasn’t that far a stretch to spare him the same courtesy. ‘They both are, really.’

Her visage softens as she drops her hands to her side, satisfied with your endorsement.

‘LEIA, it’s okay.’ The lanky attendant gives you an appreciative wink. ‘The Commander’s cool.’

For his troubles, he’s given a swift smack on the shoulder; he holds it like a cowed kitten, reeling from her blow. Regardless of her status as your bulky attendant’s boyfriend, it looked like she shared the same – though differing type – of affection for both of them. If anything, she seemed to be the big sister of the trio – they were a complete set.

‘You can’t just take advantage of people like that, you know!’ She scolds him, scowling.

You find it time to step in again.

‘The both of them willingly filled in for me when I was away from my desk.’ You raise your prosthetic, calling for calm. Maybe if you evened things out a bit, she wouldn’t be so physical with them. ‘If I didn’t give them the same courtesy – of which they had only asked an hour of leave… I wouldn’t be worthy of having them as my two right hands.’

‘You only have one right hand, sir.’

She smacks him. You’re actually okay with that – you would have done it yourself if she hadn’t.

‘You know what I’m getting at, Attendant.’

‘Still, if I can’t apologize on their behalf, I’d like to apologize on mine… I didn’t know that these were your… barracks.’ She bows again. To your left, you see your bulky attendant a little distressed – he must have felt a bit of embarrassment seeing her act like this on her behalf. ‘I didn’t see anyone in the compound and the people just followed the van and…’

If Takao, Kaga or Nagato had done the same… you suppose you would, too.

‘Apology accepted.’ You frown, a thought hitting you. ‘Although, I have to admit… I’m a bit unclear on who you are and how you’re acquainted with them?’

‘We’re from the same high school.’ She winks. ‘Teitan High. Same middle school, too – Kogoro Middle School.’ She adopts a thoughtful look. ‘Moved out here about… six, seven years ago?’

Your bulky attendant snaps his fingers.

‘About that, yeah.’ He agrees, thoughtfully nodding. Even without your prompting, he elaborates further. ‘My aunt owned a karaoke joint for a bit – sometimes, she was our only customer.’

She turns red, locking an arm around his neck.

Smiling, you find yourself a little envious.

‘Seven years ago?’ You think back. ‘Most people would’ve moved from the coast inland rather than out towards shoreline at the time.’

Indeed, that was probably around the time the people started really turning on the KanMusu. Popularity had faded into frustration and slander and libel became more widespread than praise. Distrust between the populace had been sown from a slew of northern coast townships lost to the Abyssals. In that single year you remember the toll almost breaking a million. You remember the Four Horsemen posters in your hometown, the graffiti all over them…

‘My Uncle was Mayor at the time.’

Shaken from your reverie, you listen to LEIA’s tale.

‘My parents were… I lost my father during one of the attacks and when I went to my mother, she…’ She rubs her arm, biting her lip. As rambunctious as she had been, you find it a little disconcerting that she’d become docile at the mention of her parents… before giving all three of you a reassuring smile. ‘Well, without anywhere else to go, he took me in.’

For the first time in his career, the bulky attendant shoots you a look of annoyance.

‘I’m sorry to hear that.’ You nod – your heart went out to her… before something hit you. ‘Your uncle was the Mayor? That means that – ?’

She laughs, shaking her head.

‘Oh, no, he retired a year and a half ago – during our senior year.’ She chirps happily. ‘He’s alive and well, if that’s what you’re asking. Still, it would’ve been nice if he was still in charge… you would’ve liked him, you know – he’s really supportive of the Admiralty.’ She grins wildly.

You let out an amused chuckle.

‘That’s surprising.’ It really is. ‘Even I’m not really supportive of the Admiralty.’

She lets out a bark of laughter – befitting a singer of her caliber, there is a melodious timbre to it; like jingling bells.

‘They used to bring KanMusu to the schools to do demonstrations.’ She recalls fondly – you do remember the practice, but as far as you knew, your schools had been rather out of the way from any such attempt. ‘I think I was put at the head of the line because I was the Mayor’s niece my first time. The fairies were adorable…’

‘Yeah, I remember those.’ Your lanky attendant chimes in, grinning. ‘I remember when – what was her name? Kongou? It was during first year of middle school. She was awesome! I don’t think I’d ever seen a KanMusu that – that awesome since! The way she fired those cannons! That speed! That precision!’

They break down into a gaggle of excited teens. You want to put in a retort – that your own Squadron could pick up any slack… but this was Kongou they were talking about.

This one… you could let slide.

‘So, what is it that brings you out here today, Miss LEIA?’ You inquire curiously. ‘Is this… a personal visit or…?’

She lets out a tired sigh, putting her hands on her hips and puffing her chest.

‘It was, but…’ She gives you a sincere look; one filled with energy and purpose, ‘seeing how things are around here, I’d like to stick a while.’ She turns and gives your bulky attendant a fond look – one that you notice without fail… and one that he is trying his best to not acknowledge. The red cheeks were a dead giveaway, though. ‘You look like you could use all the help you can get, and if people know I’m here and on your side, maybe we can get something going.’

‘Wow, that’s pretty smart, LEIA.’ Your lanky attendant nods, impressed.

She immediately hits the back of his head again.

‘I AM SMART, DUMBASS!’

Your bulky attendant frowns at the declaration.

‘You were almost cut from the girls’ soccer team because you fail – !’

‘What? What?’ She says in a sickly sweet voice, holding them both off their feet with her choke-hold, a manic look in her eyes. It would seem that the both of them had hit a nerve. ‘I can’t hear you over the sound of the oxygen leaving your lungs!’

‘IMPOSSIBLE!’

You look past the trio to see… the man you had seen outside.

‘Excuse me?’ She drops them to the floor, scowling as she turns to face him.

‘Miss LEIA, we can’t stay here!’ His voice is very high-pitched.

‘I believe that this tour was my decision.’ She growls, crossing her arms.

‘We’re on tour, LEIA.’ He says in a highly affected voice. ‘Do you understand how tight our schedule is? We’ve barely negotiated a timetable shift as it is! And as much as I want to,’ He doesn’t; you can tell that much. ‘we can’t, not here and not now. It’s highly improper for someone of your stature to – !’

‘To what?’

He gives you a look of disdain. You raise an eyebrow in return.

‘You know what I mean.’ He harrumphs. ‘Besides, what would your Uncle say?’ He straightens his glasses. ‘He took you from here because he didn’t want to put you in danger!’ He points at her almost rudely. ‘How would it look if he saw that his own niece threw his care for her out the window? He’d be heartbroken!’

now this is gonna be fun

>‘I do the paperwork anyway – I’ll try to see if I can do anything.’ ACCEPT TASK*
Now this requires our personal touch, not as if we had anything better to do other than visit Nagato again.
Also when is the first possible chance to go visit Taigei?
>>
>>613654
Go to the Admiral and check for a time/date to go to Admiralty HQ.
>>
>>613654
the first valid excuse we get
we need the info, and pronto

We need to start working on that as priority as well immediately after this task.

Since we're going to be doing this maybe we can send the attendants with a request to the admiral for us to head to Admirality HQ, preferably before the next operation
>>
>>613682

Probably not a good idea, we'd have to bring them in abit on what we're doing or give them instructions which have no context.

We might as well pass them the paperwork component since we know they can do this bit properly and handle the delicate sections ourselves.
>>
>>613687
plus its a delicate request for the admiral, we do it ourselves or we dont do it
>>
>>613687
We're already using them as delivery boys, im sure having them deliver something to the admiral wouldn't be that special since we're doing paperwork atm anyways.
If they ask question later we can just throw the GL under the bus as the reason since they did see him this morning.
And at the worst, this is simply a favour for Nagato
>>613688
The admiral is still the person we need to ask for permission to leave the base, this is more protocol than having him take a bigger risk than he already did.
>>
>>613689
yes but if the court knows that we talk with taigei about all that yamato/musashi rescue thing, AND THEY WILL KNOW, he will get into big trouble
and i dont wanna add more to his plate
>>
>>613690
If we leave base without hes permission, we would be considered rogue, we just have to ask for his permission to leave for the HQ and from there we can handle the rest ourselves.
>>
>>613691
I dont think their intention is to leave base with out permission but to instead approach the Admiral directly to ask about leaving for the admiralty HQ personally

‘I do the paperwork anyway – I’ll try to see if I can do anything.’ You offer.

Your bulky attendant shoots you a warning look, shaking his head. LEIA, however, instantly brightens up at the declaration… while the manager adjusts his glasses and straightens his coat, glaring at you with his mouth agape. He walks straight up to you, expecting a hairdryer of a talk, only to have him grit his teeth, mumbling something… before turning around on his heel again, throwing a finger in her now-smug features.

‘Th – This is preposterous!’ He shrills – you muse that he sounds like a housewife who’d seen a rat. ‘Miss LEIA, you can’t be serious about this – what about the tour? Your Uncle!’

‘Jii-san will understand.’ LEIA insists, her face set. ‘He may not have liked how he left, but this was – is – his town!’ She declares, gesturing with her hand. ‘He wouldn’t have left it like this if he knew just how bad things were!’

He opens up his arms, practically begging.

‘But Miss LEIA, there are – there are just so many things to do! You’d have to contact the agency on the terms,’ her manager holds up his right hand, tapping one of his fingers, ‘not to mention an official letter of apology to your fans,’ he taps another finger, his voice raising with every word, ‘a statement of accommodation and for you to sign off on all responsibility and – above all – permission from the Admiral! This isn’t some undertaking you can do in just one day!’

You shift slightly in your seat – that did seem like a lot of work… but then again, considering just what you went through with Nagato’s work pile, this didn’t seem like too much of a stretch. You look between the manager, in his odd wear and LEIA… who was also in odd wear – glaring at each other; for a manager, he really didn’t look like he was happy with this course of action at all. Not that you had expected him to be, of course. Sparing a glance to your attendants, you signal the both of them to come over.

‘Sir?’ Your lanky attendant looks at you in confusion.

‘Can we sort all these by tonight?’ You inquire – you hadn’t thought that far. Not on the whole matter.

Your bulky attendant shifts in place, his lips thinning into a line.

‘We can, but…’

All three of you look to the chattering pair of manager and the managed, who at this point had taken to arguing about the intricacies of paperwork and how the art of it should be handled. You share a look – you’d made the decision… now it was all down to you to get it down.

By tonight.

>‘I’ll talk to the Admiral first about arrangements first.’
>‘Accommodation is the main issue.’
>‘Since we’re here, let’s write that letter to the fans first.’
>‘Manager, you’re in contact with the agency right? Let’s get down to it.’

Could we have the attendants take care of some of the other stuff while we go meet with the Admiral?

Hand over other stuff like accomodation to our two guys.

>>

Well its not really a problem (for mc), whether they want to stay together.

It'll be a problem for him, seeing that enlisted usually sleep in bunks and I don't think he'd want her to be surrounded by other guys.

We could tell him to let her stay in our complex. We've got a number of spare rooms after all.

He actively DMs Call of Cthulhu. Singing is not going to go well against eldritch abominations.

I'm betting LEIA's presence is meant to be an income and morale boost, draw in more people and act as a bulwark in case morale drops and people turn against the Admiralty even more.
