This is a thread created for the discussion of Quest threads, as well as sharing of advice and guidance for aspiring or current QM's. Posters looking for advice on tabletop games should look elsewhere.

Please do not shitpost, and please report any shit posters attempting to derail discussion or cause strife. This means avoiding tripfag drama or discussion about subjects such as getting rid of /qst/.

How does it seem the moving of the board has affected the player-base you once had?

>Player Question
Do you prefer QM's that take an Avg of dice rolls or the highest out of 1,3,5 rolls?

>Bonus Question
What is the best quest you've taken part in so far?
>>
>>564453
>>What is the best quest you've taken part in so far?
That's between Audit, Not So Glorious, and Esper's HOMO Quest. Good stuff!
>>
>>564453
>Player Question
Highest of 3 is just what I'm used to so I prefer it.
>Bonus Question
The only current quests that I personally enjoy are Lamplighter Quest, Northern Beasts Quest, and Broken Sky Online.
I'm not surprised but it's still depressing that a sword art online fanfic quest gets more players than BSO
>>
>>564453

>Player Question
Do you prefer QM's that take an Avg of dice rolls or the highest out of 1,3,5 rolls?

It depends on how I'm feeling and if I like the quest itself. Sometimes I like one, sometimes I like the other. other times I love percentile rolls and occasionally no rolls at all.

>Bonus Question
What is the best quest you've taken part in so far?

Left Beyond still holds that title for me. It had the best mix of strategy, a massive world carved out of the source material by the qm that felt dynamic, Interesting mechanics, and the right amount of "do as you will it's your consequences." Heck, the players, as few of us as there were, had a lot of fun Scheming how to advance the MC's goals. God I miss spirit.

>QM Question

My threads here started slow, but picked up after a couple of days, as most of my players followed me here

TTQ
>>
>>564453
1. Since I haven't even started QMing, this certainly presents a huge obstacle. Doesn't even matter if I'm a good writer.

2.Best out of 3 rolls mostly because I'm too used to it. (Personally going to experiment with different dice systems in the future)

3. House Malory Quest. One notable moment was when a few of us suggested making the most expensive arrow in the setting.

Whats the official longest run time for a single thread/ quest

A part of me wants to go on to 12 hours and the other part wants to experience the sweet release of death
>>

It's not worth losing those hours of sleep and sanity.

But it could be fun to see who lasts longer: The QM or the Audience?

>QM Question
I came over here when the board first started, and my playerbase followed pretty quickly. It was slow at first, but it's evened out over time.

>Player Question
Can't speak about avg rolls as a player, but I tried running with it in Blood Moon. The rolls were, well... average. No spectacular successes or failures. Very safe, which ultimately made it kind of boring. But then I'm terrible at this, so I was probably doing something wrong.

>Bonus
I stopped taking part in other quests after accidentally posting a story post in someone else's thread, so I can't say.

Holy shit. Just... holy shit. 11 hours was pushing it a bit for me, but 42? AE should clearly be disqualified from the record books, as it's clearly not human.

But then no one specified longest human run time...
>>
>>564691
To be fair the posts were of highly questionable quality by the end of it. I would not personally recommend any QM attempting such a session out of a misplaced sense of duty or determination.

>How does it seem the moving of the board has affected the player-base you once had?

I know I still have many of the same players, as I am sure to link new threads on twitter and discord, but the biggest thing /qst/ seems to differ on is speed. At least, for my quest; I already attract a very small audience. Even on /tg/ I tended to get an average of 20 to 25 unique IDs per thread, and it's mostly the same here, and even then it's often the cast that one or two (sometimes three) could be the same person from multiple IDs.

I recently made a very scientific chart with lots of scientific evidence to demonstrate the ideal player base for my thread, pictured here. It's very scientific.

The way I figure it, you need to A) be up to playing in quests, B) be okay with fanfic quests and C) like or at least be casually interested (or at the very least inoffended by) Mortal Kombat.

Factoring in that /qst/ is a slower board than /tg/ with likely less people coming and thus fewer casual crossposters, it doesn't add up to a very large audience I admit, but I love them all the same.

Highest of #. I just don't see the appeal of an average.

> bonus question
I can't remember the name, but there was a series of quests with all-powerful magic, where the success of the magic hinged on a 1d2 roll (originally 1d100, but it was still 50/50 so it got simplified), and almost all posters' wishes were included. The latest couple of threads I read got bogged down a little by a couple players being way too sadistic and thus messing with the tone of the quests, but in general they were a lot of fun.

Used to run a couple of quests on /tg/, and now I'm testing the waters. What days would be best to run a quest about goblins in the deadly cutthroat world of professional go-kart racing?

And I mean deadly - if the MC dies, that's the end of the quest.
>>

>Player Question
Average system is flawed imo because the average, by definition, is mostly going to come out as a mediocre number that is neither great nor very bad. High rolls are exciting. Low rolls are excitig. 10s on a d20 all the time would be meh. I don't especially like the best of X system either because it usually means only hardcore lurkers get to roll, but I think it's the lesser of two evils.

>Bonus Question

It's quite easy once you grow the necessary brain cells to draw parallels and to know when you should deviate from the source.

Humans hardly ever have any original ideas as everything we know is absorbed from others.

Most QMs simply know how to steal shit in a way to make it their own.

Flip open a history book, any religious text or anything that has interesting stories in them.
(Mythology is your best friend if you know how to use it)

Once you have drawn inspiration seek out anything that closely resembles it and alter it in a subtle manner so people won't immediately see what you copied.
And when they find out about it they'll feel fulfilled for figuring out the hidden meaning behind your shit and they'll admire you a little for being deep and shit.

tl;dr:
>Don't be creative, be smart and take shortcuts
>>
Magical Girl For Hire Quest will be resuming in about a half hour. New thread is being made!
>>
In other news hiroyuki is posting shit in /qa/ if anyone wants to whine at him about the /qst/ situation if they feel up to it.
>>
>>565508
That was very helpful, thank you anon. I will practice doing exactly that. What kind of fertilizer do you recommend for growing brain cells though?

>>565364
Wound me, I will love you for it. I don't participate in quests to experience a typical feel-good life, I can do that outside.
>>
>>565565
Any work of Hirohiko Araki is a good start.

If he's style is too flamboyant or as I prefer to call it "fabulous" then try something more classic.

Regular literature is a very good way of finding inspiration and expanding your vocabulary.
Just make sure you find something that'd interest you and don't shy away from screen plays. There's some very good shit in there.

Oh and read popular and/or successful quests in the archives.
Learn from the mistakes of others and follow their examples.
You can git gud that way fast.
And ffs READ THE PASTEBINS!

I also highly encourage you start brewing your coffee out of energy drink instead of water to get your system used to caffeine.
>>
>>565597
I did! Well, most of them. I haven't gotten into the technical stuff like dice and system design and refining prose yet. I suppose I should go do that now.

>start brewing your coffee out of energy drink instead of water to get your system used to caffeine.

Best-of makes for some high tension, but it's up to the QM to make sure it's not entirely artificial. Avg can seem wishy-washy, but some QMs make doing okay interesting. Both workn and depend on writer and tone.

The best way to deal with waifu/husbandu wars is...

>A. Don't worry about it. Ignore it.
>B. Craft clear cut options and let player votes sort it out.
>C. Plainly state that no romance will happen in the quest.
>D. Allow for schizophrenic options where the MC bounces between love interests and pisses everyone off.
>E. Allow for harem if players vote well for it.
>F. Write in.

Come on guys, it had plenty of activity. I'm just at a busy point in my life right now my thesis project involves the creation of a science fiction anthology I'm trying to get published.... It's probably going to go up tomorrow along with Sibella Quest.

The correct answer would be Baron Bizarre Quest. In my opinion it had my best ideas, best writing, and best themes of all my quests and it died because I couldn't get even a single anon to roll a third dice. I'm still salty, but I swear I'm bringing it and Cape World back as soon as I wrap up one of my quests

>>566777
>Liked the movie and the book

I'm that way as well. You just have to understand they're entirely different in terms of tone and theme.
>>
>>568929
You could go with the hard opposite of C.
State that there will be no romance in the quest unless players pursue it heavily. Whether the majority want it or not, people will achieve a heightened level of argument when they must choose between romance and anything else good the quest has to offer.

It can backfire, but where's the fun in QMing without risks?
>>
>>567725
>He thinks QMs actually prepare

But seriously. I just relax and get my head in the game before a session.
Usually this involves music, the type of which will usually depend on what tone I believe the coming thread will take.

I say usually, because I can't stop listening to The Dear Hunter's Act V right now.

>>568818
Make it natural. The players thoughts are the QMC's thoughts. If they're conflicted about waifus, then the character should be conflicted as well.

Then either lead it up to a vote that makes the players choose, let them have both/all, or end the quest without ever giving the romance closure.

Or just do what I did and make all of their votes meaningless in the end...

I don't know why people put up with me
>>
>>568945
It really didn't help that the guy who made the movie decided to read a fucking summary because he found the book 'dull' and 'boring' I thoroughly enjoy it.

I launched my Prologue on /tg/ then had the enforcement from /qst/ happen after, so I think I lost a few of them, even from the small number it originally had. Still I don't mind small crowds. I'm almost like Cestree in a sense where I do it mainly for the love of writing.

>Player Question
For single die rolls, best out of three is usually a good average. For dicepools such as 3d6, I usually find best of one good enough as the dice pool already helps eliminate randomness a bit.

What kind of world should it take place in? What races do you want to see? I'm thinking a very Conan-esque swords and sorcery setting. I used to run with the first roll no matter what, or with dice pools that used the first X rolls no matter what. Now i'm trying to come up with an alternative that uses both the highest and the lowest roll. Like, risky actions will fuck up the MC on a low roll even if there's also a really high roll, or some unrelated bad thing will happen if there's a high roll and a low roll. Maybe some actions will be so risky that a vote for them that includes the lowest possible roll will hijack the vote and cause that choice to happen.

This is oddly true something I also noticed. I swear half the reason those quests are so good is because the participants keep it quiet so as to help prevent shitty players.

Good luck finding someone to give a recommendation. Personally I find the best way to go about it is to look for the long running quests or QM's who aren't talked about but are still able to keep kicking anyway.

So if one were to run a quest, does anyone have any general advice on the subject? Place the MC in a situation where they don't need to know about the setting, or where the MC knows about as much as the players. The same tactic is often used in films or shows, where the MC is ignorant of the larger setting and learns more with the viewers, or in this case, players.

Over time, slowly reveal more of your setting through the story as it unfolds, and avoid large info-dumps as much as possible.
>>
>>572517
>just remember its much slower.

>Chargen kills quests. Usually. Hide it or remove it until you git gud.
What's chargen?
>>
>>572640
Character generation.

Do you even /tg/?
>>
>>572640
Character Generation.
>>
>>572640
Character generation.

Never do character generation. Always start your quest with a character already made and ready to go, that way you attract players interested in that character concept. Chargen only pits would-be players with different character ideas in mind against each other and more often than not drive most of them away.

Think of it this way. A committee of random strangers is asked to assemble a wardrobe for a person without being told what time period, culture, or location the person they are picking an outfit for lives in.
>>
>>572651
Nope. That's why I ask questions.

>>572665
Hm. Not how I usually go, but I guess I'll have to get used to it.
>>
>>572640
That's where you say "Hey guys, I have this wonderful story planned and you're going to love it!

But first, write this character sheet for me. You want to have a story, right? Well, I can't write a story if you don't give me your character sheet. You and those fifty other people, of course. What do you mean you expected me to have one for you? You thought you were going to just have *fun*?"
>>
>>572665

I think if your quest is skilled enough, voting on something like a class such as Fighter/Wizard/Rogue is fine at least.
>>
>>572665
I think its fine to generate stats (if the game uses stats) and a bit of backstory in a Mass Effect style 'choose your background' vein, but it does tend towards the players making a diplomancer.
>>
>>572665
Didn't that Oh-shit-niggerfag always start his drawquests with that?
>>

Yea, but like everything you need to use your best judgment. As a rule of thumb though, you should avoid chargen like the plague. If you think you can manage it you can weave it into the story of the first thread, but for new QMs I'd honestly recommend making a character that fits the quest you want to run, and just introduce that character and go from there.
>>
>>572710
making them pick a username seems to have worked out alright in SAO Quest, and while originally the character was pretty much a blank slate their actions have shaped him into something I love working with.
>>
>>572677
Think about it this way.

You ask the players if they want their character to be MALE or FEMALE.

There's a bunch of debate. Some people want to go with female because being a cute girl is always the right option. Some people want to be male because everyone always chooses female. Some people want to be a futanari because they desire a smut quest and futa are the ultimate smut gender. Some other people don't care.

Then people vote, and MALE wins.

Everyone that voted FUTA leaves. Everyone that voted FEMALE leaves. You lose half of your votes.

Everyone left gets invested in the chargen. They get excited.

Class vote comes up. MAGE, THIEF, FIGHTER.

People argue more. Some people want a smacktalking classy thief, some want a grizzled warrior, others want a nerdy, goofy dweeb of a mage, and....

Warrior wins.

Everyone who voted Mage and Thief leaves, upset that they didn't get what they wanted. You lose two thirds of your quest- which was already cut in half. You've now got only 1 voter for every 6 you had before.

Meanwhile, instead you open up a quest as a male warrior who's kind of a goof, but wants to be a real hero! You don't give them divisive votes, but maybe you take suggestions- like a name or something. Someone's name is chosen randomly (after filtering the stupid 'Beef Cumblast' names) and off you go! People can instantly get invested in your quest without whittling them away.
>>
Anyone up for a reboot of Ironclad Chevalier?

It was the one about steampunk mechs in a Rennaisance-inspired setting.
>>
>>572857
Nah, most people who complain about choosing female in chargen do it because it almost inevitably involves /u/ at some point in the future
>>
>>572857
I still think it's fucking ridiculous that someone would leave just because they didn't get the gender they wanted.
>>
>>573201
When will this meme die?
>>
>>573431

>>
>>573431
>I still think it's fucking ridiculous that someone would leave just because they didn't get the gender they wanted.

I ain't some faggot so I ain't gonna roleplay as a woman.
>>
>>573201
Whichever it is, the point of the post stands. Chargen leads to potentially alienating potential players.

>>573431
That early on, players generally have no more reason to be invested in the quest as they do to be invested in that choice.
>>
>>573431
If you don't get female, then you can't lesbian all the female NPCs.

And being able to lesbian all the female NPCs is really important to some people.
>>
>>573461
Alternatively, if you don't get male, it's harder to seduce and acquire all the female NPCs. And being able to establish a harem is really important to some people.

Granted, some still try to do it with female PCs, so what do I know.
>>
>>573460
But people already have decided whether the gender of the MC is going to affect whether they play a quest. Whether that's decided in the first option of the thread or before it's started is irrelevant.

Multiple people have told me they will ONLY play a quest with a FeMC. So obviously if you have a male MC they aren't going to show up
>>
>>573492
Well sure, some folks have to be catered to for them to participate. That's true whether we're talking about PC gender, quest setting, direct control vs voices in the head, etc.

But not everyone with a preference is like that. Even among those who prefer one gender of player character, there are plenty who don't necessarily care strongly enough to immediately discard a quest once they see the PC is another gender.

But in that subset, there _are_ those who will abandon a quest after they voted in the chargen and lost. Because they were essentially 'teased' with the possibility of seeing something that then didn't happen.

I used to be like that with classes. I preferred mage, medic, and bard types. And often times if I voted in a chargen and the winner was a soldier or another class that didn't particularly interesting to me, I would stop following it. Yet if I was browsing quests on sup/tg/ and the first thread had a chargen that picked a similar choice, I didn't care nearly as much, skipping the conversation over the choice and moving on to the next story bit.

When you don't chargen, what players see is what they get. There's no 'oh we can be a cute noble female fencer' only to instead get a salt of the earth male druid. When you skip chargen, you're not actively asking them to decide what they'd prefer only to then show some of them that they aren't getting it.

Is this kind of question directed at QMs or at readers? Because readers usually follow more than one quest, so referring to quest in the singular is confusing as all hell, and saying "your quest" makes it sound like it's directed towards a QM.

>>
>>574596
One or two players really wanted the QMC's kids to learn shapeshifting skills for increasingly dumb reasons ("they won't look ugly during puberty!"). QM said that she didn't like the idea, but would let it happen if players voted for it (but also earned that it may have consequences down the line). Recent thread showed a majority didn't care for the idea.

Eventually a write in option to let the kids decide themselves (4 year olds, mind you) happened. AKA, let the QM decide. QM brought up something in dialogue about having them go for the shapeshifting school thing, or (as was brought up once in a previous thread already but anon either ignored or forgot it) have them go to a normal school with their cousin. One kid was interested in the school, but the other wanted to go with her cousin, so they both in-character decided to stick together.

Rereading the thread, apparently the QM even rolled to decide if the kids would say yes, and the rolls said no.

Keep in mind that again, a majority of players were clearly against this idea.
>>

I played Tuffle for awhile.

I think Kato's biggest mistakes are having a vote on her ask just because she should have expected it would trigger the autists.

I think she should have, I don't know, tried harder to make the last tournament arc i watched not boring.

I think her constant inclusion of weird other shit to DB universe and trying to make EVERYBODY relevant created way too much cast bloat.
>>
>>574714
Look anon, I realize it's hard for you to comprehend, but kato has made SEVERAL mistakes. I stopped participating before this shapeshifting incident (but have still been reading), and I know for a fact that you're just another one of the anons who vehemently support kato no matter what occurs. I won't go insulting you, because hey, it isn't gonna do jack shit, and you'll just end up writing more paragraphs at me if I do.

In the end, my OPINION is just that it seems like Kato doesn't want to own up to any of the mistakes she makes, and adamantly refuses to ever fix them.

Some of my other problems with Kato include an incredibly dry and strange sense of humor, and saying "Really, anons?" Whenever arguments or heated discussions pop up, as though that does anything.

My absolute BIGGEST problem with tuffle quest, though, has to be the playerbase. There's a few diehard kato fans who think she can do nothing wrong, so they adamantly defend her on issues across multiple threads and in the ask, all the while encouraging the earlier issues she has regarding mistakes. Those anons specifically suck every ounce of fun and joy out of reading the quest, because they fill it with vitriol and purposefully bait other anons.
>>

Read some Moloch quests. There's your model for someone who forced himself to stay within certain storytelling bounds.

>>
>>575307
no write ins

>>
>>575203
The vote on a character's last name was so inconsequential that it baffled me that anyone got upset over that, but acting like they did got those who didn't give a shit about it to go against them.

I will agree that the previous tournament was a bit of a bore, you've got a point there.

I genuinely loved having all those obscure DB related things getting in there like Jiya and Beelzebub, but I will agree that cast bloat has become a problem.

>>575306
So you spend a couple sentences claiming I'm a blind supporter then say you won't go on insulting me, while then implying that I think she can do no wrong. Instead of explaining what you mean by mistakes, you just say that people support the QM blindly when these issues come up.

Which totally justifies misarchiving threads when things don't go your way. Why am I bringing that up? Because that's the kind of attitude I'm getting from you.

I'm going to tell the truth now, I really don't know any of the nuances of ViviD. There's apparently a difference between Midchilden type martial arts and Belkan type martial arts, but I can't tell. The difference between the two originally was between what the knights used and what Nanoha herself used.

And frankly, unless you're drawing things that would make people question your sanity or understanding of human anatomy, it's really hard to get the differences between martial arts down in written or drawn form. So that's sort of what I'm struggling with, and a part of me just wants to opt out of it and say "You're using Linear-B. A made up martial arts form that is for you and only you. Step away from the tournament ring filled with little girls."
>>

Don't worry, by the time ViVid started they successfully managed to blend all their concepts into a greyed-out mess of aggressively uninteresting.

The difference is mostly theoretical especially once you go barehanded and only uses devices for protection or whatever.

Spectacular Spider-Man is best Spider-Man. It takes the best aspects of the Lee-Ditko era and puts its own unique spin on them.

It's a mix of Digital Devil Saga: Avatar Tuner, Deus Ex, and a couple of other things, where you play as a once mild-mannered hacker with only the mildest of implants, transformed by a weird virus into a biomechanical demon with an endless hunger for other biomechanical demons, and also people.

Includes: Eating enemies, literally eating them to get their abilities. Also, cool robot pictures.

hey guys
so ive been revamping that one really popular civ image that always starts civ threads
but i feel they dont have enough direction or base
so ive devised an arrangement of docs for civs

/ho7tgew
tinyurl

its meant to be a great base to any civ thread, just grab a race and create your units structures and have fun. its open ended, but with very strong bases like resources and units and stuff.

i added bullywugs as an example of how it would work.

thoughts? anyone is free to use it.
>>
ive also been developing a largely fleshed out turn based tabletop RPG based off WoW.
this one is a lot more complex, and is meant to be completed by me only. giving you guys a sneak peek incase i ever get it done and ship it out on a /qst/ thread mutliplayer.

this is very much WIP.

I don't see anything particularly novel about what you're doing to the civ select. A brief scan just tells me that you just gamified the traits to be more numerical.

I suddenly realized that if I wanted to run it; I should make some art first.

So maybe tomorrow hopefully? Around 1:00PM EST if I get all the image editing done tonight.
>>
Now quick question, how much 'original' art does Akun expect over 4chan? I can throw together a title card, but after that? It's Danbooru and zerochan unless I start scouring deviantart for paid-for last-minute rush drawings.
>>
>>581838
>how much 'original' art does Akun expect over 4chan
None at all dude, same as over here. Original art is an addition, not a requirement
>>
This week's thread of the Bizarre Adventures of Victory is up!
>>581868
>>
>>581838
As a mod on Akun, none is expected and, to be honest, I think Drawquests are RELATIVELY more popular on chans then they are on akun (but that's not to say they can't succeed).

I mean you'll get more viewers on Akun in general but that's because the population I think is larger, some how. Especially if there's lewds involved. But no, original art isn't expected.
>>
So how likely is it quests forced here from /tg/ will die a slow death from the ever dwindling population?

Everything I hear about is how this place is a gulag for killing off quests
>>
>>582912
I've only ran one quest here, and that was earlier this summer. It got around 50-60 unique posters and the quest would move pretty quickly. I think as long as you have an interesting quest people will play it.
>>
>>582912
Because for some reason /tg/'s unlimited fuel of autism does better to advertise quests than a new fucking board. Just because you're hearing a bunch of vocal retards screaming their lungs out doesn't mean it's the truth.

The answer? Nobody knows. Doesn't stop the drama queens from crying all day, though.
>>
>>582965
The sad thing is: It very well might

/tg/ was a place for people interested in roleplay and pen and paper. The only people who visit /qst/ and would really know what it's all about would be people from /tg/.

I remember the first month had dozens of posts from people asking "What are quests? Why should I be interested?". And honestly, I can't give them a really solid explanation of why they should care. Or why anyone on 4chan should care except the group of posters who enjoyed literature with mechanics on /tg/.
>>
>>581442
No iot'sin autosage, though people on it have now found out that people who hate quests have literally, provably been whining about it for 8 years.
>>
>>582912
Quests are doing fine and have never been better.
This place is the best thing to have ever happened to the questing scene.
Even planefag who ordinarily grabs the attention of hundreds of posters reported great success upon this board.
In particular, most threads get increasing amounts of players as thread numbers increase, this board has less typical dropoff than usual /tg/, and is thus the superior place for questing.
The ID's also promote a friendly and engaging environment, altogether different from typical /tg/ questing, and thus also superior. Really, they sound like they're complaining about nothing and being dramatic for no real reasons.

There's the fear that, because the only people who'd go to /qst/ would be people who already participate in quests, the overall readership will dwindle, this board will become a ghost town, and the questing scene is gone, migrated to greener pastures.

There's also the conspiracy theory that quests got consolidated onto /tg/ and then here because it's all a plot to wipe out quests, but that's unlikely.

Then there's the part where anti-questfag arguments keep getting shot down, but you probably know that reason and evidence hasn't ever really stopped people, especially in this place.

Also, mod's a fucking idiot.

Part of the number drop is the lack of people coming in and looking at your quest.

Sp since another Anon mentioned wanting to run a 30's Dillinger quest, I thought I may as well bring up an idea I had been tossing around in my head for a while:

My quest would be set right near the start of Prohibition, in the early 1920's. The MC would be a homeless WWI vet who lives in New Orleans. Basically, the quest would follow the MC as he starts from literally nothing and builds a bootlegging empire across the Deep South. It will also be extremely difficult to achieve a true 'good ending', as the MC's empire begins to crumble around him.

What do you guys think?

I'm working on a light-hearted comedy space themed civ/quest with very light stats/rules where the players control an already developed civilization, gaining victory points in the galaxy by doing various activities like space exploration, scientific research and warfare. Each faction can choose to play in a comedic fashion or create an interesting story by playing within the theme of their faction.

It will also feature lots of custom drawfagging, picture related. I'm still working on some details and polishing stuff, however I'm not sure how many players would like to join. I'm thinking of doing 3 players per faction, so between 2-4 factions in total.

So towards all the anons that would be interested in playing, if you don't mind replying to this post with a comment or two, so I can get a rough estimate on how many people to expect. I'll run the civ/quest sometime next week, don't know the exact date yet.

Thanks! I'm still working on it and polishing the stats. It might look complex on first look, but I think that after a few rounds/turns it will crystal clear. I'm also working on a short infographic tutorial so you can join in under 5 minutes. The whole system revolves around 3 stats: Power, science and credits. Also only one dice type for all actions, until stated otherwise by the QM.

So in essence you only need to know 4 rules and that's about it, I'll guide the rest. I want to give both anons that like strategy something to play with, and the anons who just like to shoot the shit for fun.

Cyber Demon Quest is now like, actually running, with the "2 hours-per-update" thing not being a thing anymore.
>>
>>591791
>People will come in, check it out, if they like it they'll stick around
Trick is, if people come check out the board and don't see any quests that catch their interest (or get discouraged by the number of quests to sort through, or needing to visit other sites to catch up to potentially interesting established quests), they leave, and that's it. There's not much that would bring them back.

Meanwhile for /a/ or /co/ or /tg/ or /ck/, even if a person's first impression of the board was lackluster, interest in something external (an anime, tabletop board game, whatever) can instill a desire to go to that board again in order to discuss that something.
>>
>>595242
So we need some sort of gateway thing to get into quests, then?

Something like a flavor of the month/season thing for /a/ or /v/ or /co/ and make it a quest?

Where would be good places outside the board to pass word of mouth about quests?
>>

Hey anons, I'm back on my usual timeframe for doing NEQ, EDQ, and Conquistador Quest (eventually). Just saying for any anons who've thinking I've been dead for a while.
>>
>>595313
You seem to be under the impression that quests are a genre, or otherwise hold similar interests and themes across the playerbase. This is simply not the case, which is why concentrating quests in one place is such a terrible idea.

Not to mention that the idea of deliberately trying to pander to flavor of the month fanfic concepts makes me actually feel ill thinking of the resulting and inevitably fleeting flood of random people who have no actual interest in quests showing up due to people more or less trying to trick them into /qst/, or even worse, a potential long term death blow to OC content amid a sea of terrible pandering fanfic nonsense.

There is no overall consensus on what makes a good quest. There are people who enjoy one but not another, it's an activity, not a genera, and your suggestions would have no effect at best, and at worst flood the board with the lowest common aspects of quests in the form of endless pandering fanfiction.

Not sure if you were thinking it through or just brainstorming, but your suggestion sounds like a personal hell to me.

That only applies when there is a general consensus as to what we are judging. Quests are too varied in their themes, genres, and overall audiences to make an accurate determination as to what is wheat and what is chaff. Your suggestion of making an organized effort to run flavor of the month fanfic quests to attract people from other boards is, in my view, deliberately pouring chaff into the silo.

What we need is a natural way for quests to reach their specific audience so that they can naturally stumble upon them. Absolutely every single quest I have ever enjoyed I found by randomly findinding it on my prefered home board of /tg/, while every time I go to /qst/ I feel like my eyes glaze over looking at this wall of uninteresting things, and I mean uninteresting in the subjective way, not as an insult.

If we can't run quests on the board where our intended audience is, then we should at the very least allow the open discussion of quests on other boards, or at the very least on /tg/, since it has one of the larger quest communities plus talking about quests is, according to the definition of /tg/, more board related than most of /tg/s content.

>>
>>594051

I'd say go ahead and write it if its something you'd have fun doing, but if you don't enjoy it then don't write it. To me feeling forced and compelled to write something usually reflects in the work and ends up as crap.

How interested would people be in an avatar quest where you play as the son of a lord/king who dies and you have to take over for him at a young age?

There'll be intrigue (Don't know how good as It'll be my first at serious intrigue stuff.)
Wars probably most likely
Managing a small kingdom and its people
Bending
Spirit fuckery and dickery
Tigerdillos
Among other things

>Why not on akun
A part of me wants to stubbornly have a successful quest here for reasons I don't even know, I can't stop thinking about it, and Spartan Quest is dying
>>
>>596171

For a second there I thought avatar meant that the race would be those blue aliens from Avatar.
>>
>>596171
>and Spartan Quest is dying
Maybe your quests wouldn't die if you didn't keep flopping between your current and new quests like a bunny with ADHD
>>
>>592643
I'm not an artist but I've had a couple banner ideas, maybe one person reading a CYOA book or behind a QM board while some other faggots beat each other up, or a heroic knight trying to carry way too many waifus to safety, or a "LEEROYYY JENKINS" word bubble from a single spacecraft as it hurdles toward the enemy fleet

Someone tried to run a DnD game not too long ago and it died in the character creation stage. Maybe a prebuilt character could have better success? I've never played but I'd be very interested if one actually got off the ground

>>596171
Politics are good. Intrigue is good. Bending is good. Fuckery is the only reason to play a game. 10/10 would do
>>
>>596181

>>
>>596044
Your wishful thinking aside, so what ways and places *right now* can we pass word of mouth about quests?
>>
>>596044

I feel putting the general there would help honestly. If we can't go back, than having the main hub thread would do the most for exposure.
>>
>>596614
It would also be 100% on topic, even by anti-quester standards, who claim /tg/ is for talking about traditional games and thus playing them is off topic, since it would simply be talking about traditional games.

At the very least I think someone should start setting up the occasional quest discussion thread on /tg/, I think it would go a long way, at the very least.
>>
>>596662

We'd need to bring that up with Hiroyuki, since none of us know the mod for this board and /tg/ or Hiroyuki.

Would it be alright to revive an old quest if I have an archive of previous posts and give a summary post for new players?
>>
>>597229
Maybe? It doesn't get done very often, but the biggest problem is how much reading new players will have to do (the quest I run has a huge archive, so it is daunting for new players even after I recap stuff.)

a sign, people don't really concentrate when reading?
>>
>>597551
It's why it's important to train people to read into details if they want to run a detail oriented quest, the same way games have tutorial levels.

If they don't pick up the hints, or overtly misjudge another character or situation, they lose an arm or a friend. Then the players will pay attention to the details, although this does not guarantee they're paying attention to the right details.
>>
>>597581
Let me speak from my experience as a Valen Quest player: players always miss the right details and overvalue and overthink the wrong ones.

Couple of reasons:

I like to write but can't finish a story. Long-form quests give me incentive to keep story writing because I don't have to have ALL the ideas myself.

It's fun.

And then there's the artistic pursuit in that I like making other people feel things (pain from a plot twist or fun just from a game-quest).

Yeah I like the collaborative working on a story that comes with quests. If I was just writing a story about undead in space I don't think I would've come up with some of the awesome ideas that my players had

I used to be the GM in my MSc cohort's weekly group, but when the program ended we went our separate ways. Now I run a quest to keep my improvisation abilities sharp. >>
>>597932

Speak for yourself.

Anyway, I think probably the most fascinating thing about questing is how you've got completely different people coming together to play a single character. It's neat to watch their thought processes come together as they argue about what the character would want to do in different situations, how they live themselves into the character and share in its joys and pains, how they waifu the other characters and panic when shit gets real.

I think it's kind of like an in-between of fans following and discussing a story/show and them actually playing in it. That's pretty unique, and getting to steer that kind of communal process is quite a privilege.

I've been thinking of starting my own quest after a while now. How long do you guys think is a good amount of time world building before putting it into play? Also when giving options on an action should you write the different scenarios before they pick or after?

I feel I would be too slow a writer, and feel I can be bad at dialogue, being my main issues with taking the leap or not.
>>
>>604304
After, and this is mostly due to understanding what you're getting into.

Let's say you prewrite the actions for a given choice of four things. You've written 4 "outcomes", and each of those four outcomes need 4 more outcomes. By the second post, you've written 4*4=16 outcomes. Each of those outcomes need 4 more outcomes. It just gets worse from there, and you'll spend a huge chunk of time trying to account for things - The majority of which you'll throw away.

And that's not even counting... What if your players write something in? What if they want to do Option A, but with tweaks?

As for world building, that depends entirely on you, your ability to adlib, and your quest. If your quest isn't focused on a rich and vibrant world, then you don't really need in depth details. If your quest is heavily political, then you're going to need enough pre-established data there for you to refer to in order to keep things working. If your quest is waifu-focused dice combat based around fighting the evil dragon because it's evil, then no one is liable to care about anything you can't just blurt out on the spot and never care about again.

If you're worried about being bad at dialogue, realize there are plenty far worse than you. If you're worried about being a slow writer, understand that a lot of /qst/ QMs might update 2-3 times a day, and don't even hold proper writing sessions.

Get out there and try, it might be fun. Worst case scenario, you gain a bit of experience.

Whatever you do, love what you write, and appreciate your players.
>>
>>604304
The best advice I can give any would-be QM is to be good at improv.
>>
>>604304
Rule Number 4 - if the world building is interesting, your players will never, ever stop hounding you about it.

This is not a bad thing, but be prepared to cope with it.

Rule number one is "your players will never do what you expect", as always.
Rule number two is '"onsistency is king", regardless of if it is timing, characterization, or magic.
Rule number three is "don't listem to Vaelys." That means if there is salt, accept it, understand it, but get over it and move on. Paying attention to oversalted people who are annoyed because there is no "instant win", "path spelled out to success" or because of consequences only leads to them destroying your quest.
