Hello! Welcome to Magical Girl For Hire Quest!

You are Miranda Styles, a relatively unscrupulous magical girl currently working for Silver Eye Solutions, a umbrella corporation for magical girl mercenaries such as yourself, located in scenic The Intersection, a dimensional nowhere and everywhere where you rest and get details for your next job. Currently, you're in the middle of a job in a swords-and-sorcery universe to take down a ragtag group of youths that probably have some kind of chosen ones shtick going on- whether it's by convincing them to join your clients, the mysterious Knights of the New Moon, or by outright elimination- the choice is yours. Upon getting here and getting briefed, the Knights got informed of a bandit lord that'd been causing trouble around their holdings, and tasked you with their elimination as a side-job. You'd just managed to finish that off, and in the process was able to secure a second of a number of legendary artifacts that The Knights of the New Moon have been searching for, via snatching control of it from said bandit lord, who had been using the thing to reinforce incredible assaults on cities by his men- the latest being Tenimbaum of Alban, a large city known for being one of the last bastions of true magical study.

With a start, you find yourself waking up suddenly. You're not even sure where you are for a couple of seconds, but soon enough you shake through the bleariness and focus.

You'd just finished sending the Great Creation, the Iron Golem, off to the southwest in the hopes that it'd be spotted by the Knights of the Blue Moon, and then spent some hours tracking down and mopping up the marauders that had been plaguing all three sides of the conflict...so that's out of your hair. Thank goodness. This means that your only remaining mission is dealing with The Longshots- and you're certain you've seen the majority of the team by now.

After it was all said and done...

>You'd returned to Tenimbaum, to (annoying) cheers along with others, and went back to finish your rest at the inn. You might be able to catch more info about the kids there, if you can deal with your sudden popularity.
>You'd decided not to risk getting too known, and had went back without most of your supplies, in order to report to the Knights at the Fortress. You'd marched for half the night to get to a decent distance away.

More renown for us means more renown for the knights, which means payday for us.

We still have our favor to cash in anyway, and we can't do that if we lose track of Geegee.

I'm curious what that ultimate attack thing was
>>
>>543022
twas his ultimate attack
let's not let him charge it up next time and be a cold professional magical hit girl.
>>
>>542993
You had decided to go ahead and go back, despite all of the cheer and back patting and whatnot. As much as you really didn't want to deal with it, leaving now would be giving up a lot of potential intel. That, and you really did like sleeping in a real bed. Fortunately, nobody's outside your door or anything, waiting for you to wake up. In fact, things are really especially quiet.

Well, thank goodness for small mercies. Hopefully this means you can continue your mission in relative peace. You take stock of all of your inventory- One minor Health regeneration potion, One Aqua Lungs potion, Approximately five days worth of rations, and various other survival goods.

As you step out of your room, you're greeted, to your unfortunate expectations, by chortling and cheerfulness, and several hails thrown your way. Really, it's not that you hate happiness or anything like that. You're not that socially maladjusted. You're just not a fan of social activity in the mornings.

You wish you still had your cloak.

Before you can really try to make yourself inconspicuous, you can see several people in military dress walk up to you. One of them has a winged helmet and flowing cloak, and you can see bright blue eyes under his visor.

“Hail!” His voice is far too loud for the morning. “I understand that you're the one who managed to get that beast away from us? If so, the Crown Prince would very much like a word with you, if you're able.”

Oh, it was too early for this.

I think we should get a handle on what the prince wants with us, and delay whatever meeting for as long as possible until we're ready to leave. Chances are that it's another job offer, and we really shouldn't get sidetracked.

>Why?
Miranda just finished one part of her job, right?
we still got those heroes to take care of.
>>
Late on my part but this prince or whatever is going to be pretty disappointed. Are we still wearing that weird looking armor btw or did we change like those two recruits suggested?
>>
>>543134
We had a cloak to cover the armor, but we lost it while killing all those bandits. So we full Sauron right now.
>>
>>543145
God that really needs to change. Im all for badass armor but if its all we ever wear then jesus help us.
>>
>>543152
We haven't really had time to get a new one.
>>
>>543161
Fair point. We might need something less conspicuous for the future is all im sayin
>>
>>543062
“May I ask why?” is your first instinct and your first question. “I'm not for hire if that's what he was hoping for.”

The guard shrugs. “I can't honestly say to know why. But what he said was that he wanted the one that handled the Giant. If it makes you feel any better, I think he's also summoning others as well.” Others? You wonder if he meant those kids… “Either way, a summons by the Crown Prince is not to be taken lightly. He very rarely receives guests on his own volition.”

Frankly, you didn't really care about that one bit. But, it might be something to see what this Crown Prince wanted. If it was just another job though, he'd be sorely disappointed. You already have enough on your plate as it stands. “Very well. Lead the way.”

The crown prince's castle is about as fancy as you expected it to be. A lot of pictures, a lot of stained glass windows, and very very fancy decor with pillars and all that sort of stuff around him. Interestingly enough, you don't actually see anyone else with you when you walk in. Probably just late. You are led to a room down one of the hallways, and it to your big surprise it doesn't really seem all that ornate. A table, some books, a few pictures, and a desk wherein a man in regal robes and a cape sits behind. You can only assume him to be the Crown Prince. He looks young. Red haired, with strong eyes. As he looks up at you, he nods in greeting. “Ah, a pleasure to meet you in person. I heard that you did great things on the battlefield. I hope you don't mind overmuch, but there are others that I've invited to this little meeting. I'll give you the run down now though to save time. I'm uncertain who you are, or what you're doing. Your armor is most imposing- that and how your general posture is rather aggressive, makes me think you're not exactly the most lawful of souls. But lately we've been having a bit of a morale problem. I wish to reward you and several others medals in a public ceremony to be held in three days’ time. I understand people like you tend to be very nomadic, so I was hoping you'd be able to stay.

we were hired to take care of bandits, and we need to report soon. this might cause some problems with our line of work. we need to be polite while pointing this out obviously.
>>
>>543274
me too, this is a good chance to meet them in a non-threatening situation that they can't go aggressive on us without complications. but three days isn't exactly short. I wonder if we agree to attend, but excuse ourselves to take care of things we need to do during those three days.
>>
>>543237
I'm inclined to accept, our only remaining task involves the other party (presumably) being given medals. Leaving doesn't really seem to accomplish anything.

>>
>>543466
Now that's weird. Aaaaanywho.

>>543237
You're really not sure. There's several advantages to staying around, but you really should probably report in sooner than later. Before you can open your mouth to raise concerns, however, the door opens again. Through it walks ‘that girl’ again, who balks upon seeing you, and the hot-headed young man that seemed to challenge the fancy fellow earlier. He doesn't seem to react to you. “Well, speak of demons…excellent timing.” He motions to the two, then waves your direction. “Sorina, Adel, I'd like you to meet your fellow medal recipient.”

Sorina looks like she wants to say something, but doesn't open her mouth. Adel simply smirks and gives a two-finger salute. “Well, well. Can't say I'm surprised after what you pulled. I saw you ripping through bandits like there was no tomorrow. Got to say, that was kinda impressive. I mean, I'm pretty sure I coulda done that just as easy, but-” Sorina elbows him with a stern look on her face before he can say anymore. You're finding it hard to not roll your eyes. Seen his type before, a dime a dozen. Sorina, for her part, seems to be doing something just short of analyzing you- you quickly noticed how her eyes seemed to shift in various rapid-fire motions without actually turning her head, taking in as much detail about you as possible without openly giving a lot away.

At your estimate, she took about three seconds for the full body scan. Not bad for an amateur. Your snapshots of people are fair deal faster, but then again you've got a lot of years on you. She ends up gingerly raising a hand to wave. “A, uh...a pleasure to...meet you.” She seems incredibly nervous, but she merely wavers in voice, not posture.

You turn back quickly. “I have a few things I need to take care of before the event. If I agree to this…”

“So long as you can make the trip back in time, I suppose.” He seems to guess your question. “I’m not sure what you’re hoping to do in such little travel time, however…” Hm. He’d be surprised.

“Ah, too bad- I was hopin’ for a spar!” Adel says before yet another elbow. “Oof! Hey, what was wrong with that?!”

“Actually...that might be an interesting idea!” the Prince says. “A little exhibition combat- after the ceremony to show the strength and resiliency of Alban!”

"Hey, yeah! Now THAT'S soundin' more my speed!" Adel pounds a fist into his hand. "We'll see if you're as much of a 'demon' as the guys said!"

> “You’ll have to wait on it. I have things to finish up.”

>>

If this takes place in the arena, and we can get Geegee in on it, we might be able to get her to put our money down on us, and earn a little of our expenses back.

Plus it'll show the Longshots just how far out of their league we are.
>>
>>543468
>“You’ll have to wait on it. I have things to finish up.”
heh. that guy's just like how I expected of him. either way, sparring with him might actually work in our favor, building up brownie points with him could be helpful in persuading him later.
oh and also reporting. we should probably check in that amulet asap, as well as this ceremonial shenanigans that's about to happen.
>>
>>543468
> “You’ll have to wait on it. I have things to finish up."

We should have a wager on top of it as well. When win, they should give us *insert information/request/whatever*.
>>
>>543468
So our objective here is to convince them to join the Moonmen if possible, and otherwise to get them out of the way. We should see if we can get him to agree to hear our bosses offer, he seems overconfident enough to accept any kind of challenge. Lets bet on the outcome, and make sure to win. We can report in in the meanwhile and get things set up on the other end.

> “I’m not interesting in unnecessary games, how about we make it interesting.”

>>
>>543529

>>
>>543468
Hm. You’re not too surprised at the hothead wanting a piece of you. It’s not the first time it’s happened...but still. You have priorities, but maybe you can do something with this. You turn to Adel, carefully keeping your face neutral. “I have things to finish up, as I said. But if you don’t mind waiting, confident as you are…” and here you look towards the Prince. “Perhaps we can make things a bit more interesting.”

“Ohhhhh...so you’re speaking of a wager?” Adel laughs, but Sorina just grimaces, looking between you and him. The prince seems to rub his chin. “Hmm...I daresay that might be interesting. Some friendly coin changing hands might give things quite the interesting angle. Of course, that depends on if Mr. Adel-”

“Sure!” Huh. That was certainly quick. “Lesse, what do I want when I win...oh! How about…”

“Save it,” you offer. “We’ll discuss terms later. For now, I have places to be.” You begin to move past them, Sorina nervously keeping an eye on you the entire time.

“Hey!” You stop briefly as Adel addresses you. “You better be ready! I’m not going to give you even an inch! All that fancy armor better not just be for show!” Ugh. These types. Still, if you can force a quick resolution, then...it might be worth putting up with. You don’t acknowledge him, rather you simply exit the room, and the guard outside leads you back out to the streets.

Alright, then. You’ve got a few things you could do. You can stop by the Inn and see if Geegee’s about, and maybe discuss future events with her- you might be able to get that favor done for you or discuss any other matters. If there’s anything like potions, or maybe another cloak that you want, it’d probably be a good idea to buy it now. Else, you could just get your stuff, and head on out.

>>
cloaks. cloakbro. cloaking.

I'm tired. Last update for tonight. Writing.
>>
>>543629
I agree. why put that much effort? if we need a good cloak, we can ask the moonguys for another one back a t the fort.
>>
>>543582
The first thing on your mind is to get a new cloak before you leave. Not just for disguise purposes, mind you- it actually did a decent job of warding off the heat in this armor. It doesn't take too long to find a decent tailor, fortunately, and he'd happened to have a few pre-made ones. You'd decided to buy one for 4 gold pieces- it was largely a very basic hooded cloak, purple in coloration again, and you really didn't want to spend more than that.

With that, you'd headed back to the inn and packed up- the entire round trip would likely take about a day or so, considering the mountains were still annoying and you weren't the biggest fan of traveling at night. Hopefully, you wouldn't be distracted by anything too hard to deal with either coming or going...

As you're about to exit the inn, you run into a few people who ask where you're going, but you quickly brush them off. One guy seems hesitant to approach you while at the same time desperately trying to get your attention, and when you turn to look at him, he quickly runs away. Strange. Nonetheless, you make it out of the city quickly enough, and begin your trek back to the Moon Fortress, moving as fast as you can. There's no smoke or the sort to distract you this time, and the bandits that yet live have quickly learned not to mess with you. That, plus general knowledge of the terrain now allows you to move a bit faster.

It's early evening by the time you manage to reach the fortress. The commander is surprised to see you back again- his runner had only just managed to make his way back from the first update- he in fact arrived shortly before you did, bearing news in the form of a letter for you. And the letter has some very gratifying news.

You've been granted a bonus of ten-thousand gold with your second payment due to the obtainment of a Great Creation, and they're apparently willing to offer ten-thousand for every Great Creation you manage to secure for the Knights of the New Moon. This is completely optional, they claim, and the priority is still the conversion or elimination of The Longshots. Well, the good news for you is that you're about to get another ten-thousand fairly soon, if that's the case. When you tell them about the Iron Golem, you SWEAR you can hear Corin scream from halfway across the fortress.

>Is there anything specific you want to do while here?
>>
Done going to bed going to resume this tomorrow about the same time. I liked todays turnout, thanks!
>>
>>543760
See if we can get any more information on these Longshots, and then try to set up some kind of pitch meeting we can entrap them into coming to when we kick Adel's ass. Having them come to us means if they aren't amenable to the offer we can kill them without too much bother.
>>
>>543760
Get an advance of about 50 gold coins to replenish our emergency reserve.
Tell the fortress commander to expect the Iron Golem soon, and that we are to be referred to as Princess Miranda when speaking with it.

Ask the commander and his staff for information about the Crown Prince of Alban.
Should we take him out?
I mean, he IS the Crown Prince of the enemy nation, and the Knights want to subjugate both kingdoms.
>>
>>543760
>Is there anything specific you want to do while here?
We're gonna need more spending cash, since if I am not mistaken, we only have 16 coins left. That's two nights at the Sleeping Bear. Plus, it would be good to get a betting scheme going with Geegee if we had more money on hand.
>>
>>543798
Do you think 50 gold coins is enough, or should we ask for more, if we're going to be getting seed money for Geegee's betting?
>>
>>543818
Well, we started out with 150, and that vanished in three days. Of course, we did buy some top dollar potions, but we've yet to use one on ourselves, and we've already neutralized the biggest threat that we know about in the setting. I think another 150 would be better.
>>
>>543760
Grab a much larger coin pouch, at least a hundred coins.

Tell them about geegee? If she wants to set up outside of the kingdoms might as well do it here.

>Take Corin for a piggy back ride to the top of the nearest mountain to watch the sunrise!
>>
>>543760
heh. these moonguys know what's up.
replenish coins, back up to 150. maybe 200.
After reporting about our shenanigans and the impending duel, inquire about more info about the longshots. If they gained any more intel, we need them now.
>>
We shouldn't be too greedy, right?
>>
>>543908
everything seems stable so far. the arrangements are solid, the hero guy doesn't look like a backstabber, and the crown prince has nothing to lose and gains morale if this goes well.
>>
>>543915
Once we win the duel, should we reveal that we are the supersoldier working for the Knights of the New Moon, the faction that wants to depose the Crown Prince and conquer Alba, or continue being "The Mysterious Wanderer"?
>>
>>543926
I think we should arrange a private meeting with the Longshots after the duel, and let them know exactly what the plan is. Then convert/murder them, whatever is more expedient.
>>
>>543926
Not really part of our contract at the moment. That seems like it would severely limit our activities in the region
>>
>>543926
no.

>>543941
yup. and there's two ways to do this.
First one is figuring out THEIR ultimate goal. And then persuade them that our moonguys will help or is the answer to it. If it's end of conflict, peace, and things along that line, we could maybe even offer assistance(that the New moon will pay for), for the exchange of adjusting their goals to align with ours as well.
Second one is just directly saying what we want. we get a no, we tell them what's going to happen. If they don't submit, blast them. preferably far from civilization.

regardless of which option we take, it's important that we interact more with them during the upcoming duel shenanigans, to see if the first option seems possible. If we can get them on our side, we might get a bonus.
>>
>>544044
>Not really part of our contract at the moment.
Removing the Longshots as an obstacle is just a contract milestone; winning the war is still the long term objective.

>>544112
>preferably far from civilization.
I don't see why we should be limiting collateral damage. It's specifically not part of our contract.
>>
>>543926
No need for that, but let's make the fight a real spectacle. Get the guy to agree to begin with showmanship before we fight for real and then just go full magical girl with flying and hovering and pink magic projectiles or something.

Also let's fill a whole backpack with gold to give to geegee so she can bet on us and we will make mad bank
>>
>>544145
the part about avoiding civilizations is to reduce witnesses coverage. I don't want potential allies of the longshot party suddenly popping out of alleyways and rooftops at the decisive moment.
>>
>>544145
Because we have leeway here in terms of available time to do so? Wrecking part of the alban capital also helps out the other faction significantly, which we dont want.

Limiting collateral in this situation is smart in situations like this. Just because it isnt explicitly stipulated doesnt mean we should ignore it as a factor.
>>
>>543760
>One guy seems hesitant to approach you while at the same time desperately trying to get your attention, and when you turn to look at him, he quickly runs away. Strange.

>>
>>544377
huh. okay then.
>>
>>544377
Adorable
>>
>>544367
Same difference. The whole reason we didnt want the iron golem wrecking the city is why we dont want to. It still serves to tip the balance of power.
>>

>>
>>544399
Why are we even concerned with maintaining the stalemate between Alban and Horinth, when the acquisition of the Great Creations in order to conquer both kingdoms is the goal?
Even if Horinth gains the upper hand and is able to push Alban back, that means Horinth's supply lines get overextended and their troops spread out when the Knights push against both kingdoms from the south.
>>
>>544436
It is not our goal. Its explicitly a side goal, remember?
>>
>>544436
Also I think you have forgotten what our job was. We were hired to help maintain the balance of power while the knights of the new moon accomplish their objectives, and we were told to do so by accomplishing the objectives they set out for us, which is currently dealing with the longshots in some way or another. The creations are something we did on our own, hence why we are being paid a bonus for them.
>>
>>544438
If we're talking about goals, then it's currently to eliminate the Longshots as a threat, either by recruitment or killing them.
A side-goal is the acquisition of the remaining Great Creations.

Our contract is a time-and-materials contract, being paid by the day, and is to last until the Knights achieve their goal of victory against Alban and Horinth.

Maintaining the balance of power between Alban and Horinth serves none of the goals or the overall contract.
It could be argued that the current stalemate helps to prolong the contract and our payment, but the Knights believed that the acquisition of the Great Creations would legitimize their side and quickly end the war in their favor, so the stalemate doesn't seem necessary.

>time and materials

No its not...? Its not even a question anymore, you have clearly forgotten the premise of this job and need to go back and reread everything.

>He nods. “Of course.” He turns to Veryn. “The gold.” Veryn nods and claps his hands twice. From beyond a corner, two soldiers come around the corner carrying a chest. “From what I was told, this would solidify your temporary allegiance with us, correct?” As they got to the base of the stairs, they put the chest down, and open it, revealing a massive number of gold pieces. “Seven thousand for now, as requested, with more to be delivered as you accomplish our desired goals.”

Well intimidation was stacked because we assumed our clients were looking for a badass.

>>544436
>>544441
I get what you're saying but you forget that our employers became the third faction in the war because they got sick of EVERYONE KILLING EVERYONE. If we just blow up a city on their behalf it will forever ruin any legitimacy they have going for them.
>>
>>544445
For further clarification, our current primary mission:

>You nod. This was good info to have. "So you want them dead?"

"We would prefer they come to understand the futility of their efforts and join us." Argus says. "But we understand that that may not be possible. We have a plan. We have found ancient knowledge that points to a method that we may be able to use to realize our ultimate goal. We are in the process of trying to collect the various pieces told in that ancient knowledge. They have learned such as well, and are in the process of trying to stop us. So however you might be able to handle the situation is acceptable, so long as they have ceased being a threat to us."
>>
>>544451
Do we even know what their ultimate goal is? I'm still not convinced that we aren't working for the Bad Guys in this scenario.

>>544450
>Well intimidation was stacked because we assumed our clients were looking for a badass.
Yeah, I know that. It's just irritating how whatshername mage girl assumed we're not someone to fuck with when I just want to befriend her band of misfits.

Too bad there isn't a way to change equips mid-mission.
>>

>>535194
>I'll actually answer this- it's a time and materials contract. You get paid by the day.
>>
>>544456
Naw, all theyve told us is that theyre looking for the pieces to a certain artifact that will let em accomplish their 'final solution', whatever it is. Longshots been getting in the way.

They could very well be the bads, its just beyond our scope to care.
>>
>>544450
>became the third faction in the war because they got sick of EVERYONE KILLING EVERYONE
No, Argus said that they didn't want to be ruled by old ways or gods, that's why they created their faction.
>>
>>544458
Which is it then, because we've been told two different payment schemes in that case.

Also having looked back to verify that post, its the same one that says we dont want either side getting a decisive advantage.
>>
>>544456
>working for the Bad Guys in this scenario.
Why should that matter?
We flat-out do not care, and evil pays better than good.
>>
>>544456
Ah, I think she's wary of us because she can sense our insane magic capacity. We look like a monster to her for other reasons than our suit of armor.

The only time intimidation fucked us over was when that guy thought that "unfinished business" was a good pick up line.

>>544460
Because the two factions were killing each other for idiotic reasons, so they made a third with the aim to crush ideology and theology. If we do what you want they will look like monsters and even IF they win the war, there will be partisan rebellions for ages to come because "they used a planewalker to nuke a city what the fuck".

Time and Materials is just the payment scheme, not an objective.
>>
>>544466
>even IF they win the war, there will be partisan rebellions for ages to come because "they used a planewalker to nuke a city what the fuck".
We explicitly do not give a shit what kind of hellhole a world becomes after we leave.

And causing some collateral damage to a city during a fight is not the same as nuking it.
We don't have enough mana to nuke the city anyway.

>>544462
The Knights don't want either side to have a major advantage before they're ready.
As for the contract itself, this is what Sal said about it:
“More or less,” Sal explains. “From what I can tell, they really want someone that can make both the other guys panic and really beg for mercy, make 'em think that they're stronger than they are.
>>
>>544483
Sal also said he barely remembers it. What our clients have directly said bares more weight with regards to what they want from us than what Dal admits to half remembering.
>>
>>544456
> working for the bad guys.
After the first hundred bbeg defeated and worlds liberated it really stops mattering

>>544414
Agreed. Pros for intimidation so far have been looking like a badass and getting weak people to talk (which we could do anyway with a show of power our some minor torture), cons are no stealth missions, totally unwarranted suspicion and FUCKING RANDOM ENCOUNTERS, mostly with self righteous would-be heroes.

>>544196
I'm ok with making a magical girl spectacle and shouting about the power off love and friendship etc, that should confuse them.
>>
>>544466
>Ah, I think she's wary of us because she can sense our insane magic capacity. We look like a monster to her for other reasons than our suit of armor.
That contributes, but I'm sure that the main reason she's treating us like an endboss is almost certainly the fact that we're skulking around in cloaks half the time and looking like a fucking demon the rest of the time.

>>544464
>>544489
It doesn't matter for us, but it does for the kids we're trying to convince to join our side. Until we realize it won't work and decide to butcher them. I'm okay with that outcome too.
>>
>>544491
Speaking of convincing them to join our side, we need to ask the people at this base for a recruitment pitch because right now we've got no way to convince the Longshots whatsoever.

>Ask them why they joined up.
>>
>>544483
As far as I can tell, or bad guy clients want to make their world a better place. Even if we don't care, I'm sure one goal with winning the war is to create peace. If their own methods and actions fail to achieve that, then whatever. We are pros, we don't do things that can be detrimental to our client without their express permission.
>>
>>544495
>we don't do things that can be detrimental to our client without their express permission.
We charge a higher rate for a restrictive RoE that preserves civilian lives.
Minimizing collateral damage is an extra fee, something we explicitly stated in our previous contract to our clients.
>>
>>544500
25% extra upcharge, to be exact.
>>
>>544503
True. Well, we will see what happens, I don't mind it much I just don't feel like we absolutely need to be a mass murderer right now since the objective is to either recruit or kill. If they want them on their side if possible I see that as them actually caring about minimising casualties to an extent. Like, not meeting civilians.

If people decide to vote to make us a monster instead of just snarky and callous I'll take that with stride, but not before.
>>
>>544493
Good idea, we don't actually know anything about the conflict other than a quick "two factions are fighting and some powerful dudes started a third" from Sal and "well the other two are fighting and we don't like either of them so we want to beat them all up" from our client. If we can learn why the grunts joined the moonmen we can make a much better case, one that isn't 'because you don't stand the shadow of a chance if you fight me'.

>>544489
Power of Love may be a bit much... I was thinking more along the lines of Subaru from Nanoha. The idea is that we can, non-lethally, show the Longshots and the city that they stand absolutely no fucking chance in hell. Being a public event, we can drag it on for as long as we want and they can't retreat- they have to stay for the ceremony. Our opponent is a boaster it's going to be easy to make him go along with it.

Writing. Hallo peoples.
>>
After you been brought in and getting a decent meal, you decide it's best to take care of business before retiring for the night. First thing you do, is ask for an advance of 150 gold pieces. Part of that is because of your own spending habits, but a majority is due to an idea that you got in your head. You'll have to talk to Geegee and see if she's up for it. The commander is understandably reluctant, but eventually agrees to it. Telling him about the Iron Golem is what sells him on the idea.

After taking your money from him, a thought strikes you. “Excuse me Commander, but I'm curious somewhat. Precisely what is it that led you to joining the Knights of the New Moon?”

“A hope to live my life as I like it without fear of persecution,” he answers without missing a beat. “Alban is certainly a pleasant enough to live place- so long as you don't make the mistake of questioning faith or history. It's only then that you'll see the darker side of things. Lives ruined because of one errant question at the wrong time. People disappeared due to having the gall to say that the hero may not have been as great as the stories claim. Although I never found proof, I'm convinced that the Mages’ College indoctrinated their students into worshiping the Noble One and to only use their powers in his name. I was never that big of a believer despite my parents’ best efforts. Just couldn't quite see the logic.” He pauses, then shakes his head. “Sorry, I didn't mean to go on a rant.”

“It’s fine,” you assure him. “It was interesting information.” you wouldn't have guessed that they were into that kind of cleansing, but perhaps that just meant they were very good at them. You can't help but wonder if The Longshots were privy to the knowledge or not. Something to perhaps keep in your back pocket for later…

“I just thought it was all stupid,” Corin says as she nibbles on a carrot layer in the mess hall. “Five years of warring over ‘he said she said’? If neither of them can realize that this is utterly idiotic, then frankly I don't think either of them deserve to be a major power. Once the Knights showed up in Hatham’s Hold one day, I knew where I was headed. And now I get to study what I want, when I want, and how I want!”

“So you want both nations destroyed?” you ask.

She blanches. “Oh, gracious no! I just don't want them to…” She pauses, thinking about how best to word it. “...huh. well, I guess the best way to put it is that I would rather the nations not be nations anymore. Combine both of them, and the Knights rule that, since we're neutral. Sorta.”

Hmm. “So if you were trying to get people to join, what would you say?” you ask further.

“Oh, easy! That everyone has a place here. It's not like in Alban where you have to worship a specific God, or Horinth where your lineage is what determines how good your life gets. As long as you can do something halfway useful, we welcome you!”

Come the morning, you find yourself waking up at the crack of dawn. To your slight surprise, you find Julius up and about as well. “Ah, a pleasure to see you up so early! Do you perform morning exercises as well?”

You shake your head.
“Just getting an early start on things.”

Julius chuckles good-naturedly. “Ah, a shame. I would have like to invite you.”

After a bit more trivial conversation, you're ready to head out. The commander once again meets you at the gate. “You're doing more for the future of this continent, and quite possibly this world more than you think. Thank you.”

You shrug. “Just don't be surprised if you see an Iron Giant walking across the plains anytime soon. If you do, and it addresses you, I am to be referred to as Princess Miranda. Yes, trust me on that. It would also be a good idea to request Argus’s presence.”

The commander salutes. “I'll be sure to notify him. I'm rather certain he'll be interested in the trip.”

You nod, and you're on your way back.

Surprisingly, you manage to make decent time and are back by midday. Then again, you basically started out immediately at sunrise. When you get back to the Lazy Bear Inn, Geegee is the first to greet you, with a mouthful of honeyed bread. “Well, and here I was wondering where you got off to. I thought you were gone with the wind!”
“Actually, I'll be staying for a bit.”

“Oh yeah? Well good on ya. Maybe you can help me find someone to get Zeezee outta Horinth.”

Huh. So the people that joined the Knights didn't give a shit bout the lives lost in the war, just that the war itself was being handled by idiots over something stupid.
Doesn't seem like the rank and file of the Knights care much for either nation continuing to exist.

“I'll be busy for a while, actually…” you start, and she pouts a bit before you can continue. “But first, how would you feel about gambling?”

The smile on her face tells you all you need to know. You both retire to a room, and as she looks at the bounty of coins that you brought, her eyes widen. “Geez, you want me to up that much just for a fight? You think the odds are gonna be that good?”

“If nothing else, it's going to be an easy payout,” you state.

She chuckles. “Big talk. But heck, you'll probably back it up in spades. Alright, then!” She grabs up a handful of coins. “Let's get to the arena and get-”

“Not yet,” you stop her. “In two days. There's going to be a sort of celebration or ceremony that the prince wants me to be involved in. After that, I'm to duel another specific person in exhibition combat. The prince has agreed to permit betting for this event.”

“Wait, YOU'RE gonna be in that medal ceremony that just got announced?” She gawkes. “Just what'd you do? Sorry to admit it, but I was hiding in a closet.”

Ah. “I got rid of the Giant. And most of the marauders afterwards.”

“Geez, just fight the whole war by yourself why don't you?” It's clear that's more respect than umbrage. “Still, hearing that, I think I'll stick with what I said. Might be a good idea to visit the arena before you have to step foot in it, get a feel for the locale.”

It's a valid idea. Maybe try to talk to any of the locals, or if there's anything like bookies, how the odds tend to go. Still, you were hoping to quite possibly encounter The Longshots outside of a fight. It would be interesting to learn their stance on things and see if they were in fact amenable to a change of allegiance. You're not sure where they were, however. You'd have to look around. Another thing is to maybe look into that claim the commander said- about the Mages College. Or really anything that might sour the look of Alban in their eyes.

College is for suckers. Writing.
>>
>>545453
Yeah, that last one sounds like the best idea. If you can gather concrete evidence- or at least good enough evidence- that the college has some iffy practices, then The Longshots might be more amenable to alternative viewpoints. Of course, this is depending on the fact that they don't already know this information, but better to have and not need than need and not have. “Maybe tomorrow, Geegee. I'm going to take the opportunity to do a little more sightseeing.”

She sighs and shrugs. “Iiiiiiif you say so. I've got no talent for magic, so I'll skip that. Although if you're going to be competing in that, I might hold off looking for a caravan or escort until after the match. Future rich girls like me deserve only the best! Nyehehehe!”

Her laughter is both annoying and endearing at the same time. You weren't sure that was possible.

The college is a large, multi building complex, surprisingly like a lot of modern colleges. You were honestly expecting maybe one big building or something. There are a few students mulling about; they seem to be dressed in robes and other such basic apparel. Apparently there's a dress code. You get a few stares, a couple of curious looks, but you're actually rather ignored for the most part. Likely because you're also in similar dress with your cloak; one of the students actually mistakes you for faculty with a quick, ‘Hail, Magister’, as you pass. You don't respond. She doesn't seem to take offense; she just keeps walking.

For a brief period of time you're simply wandering the halls. However, you manage to locate a directory soon enough. Out of all the locations, these leap out at you the most...

Of all of them, the Serenity Pavilion sounds like best combination betwee safety in investigating, and the most interesting. You idly follow the arrows until they finally exit into an outside area, and sure enough it leads out to a pavilion surrounded by very pretty, blossoming trees, and a large sitting area under a canopy, which is surrounded by a thin ring of water. In the center of the pavilion is a statue of some older fellow with a beard and in plainclothes, raising a finger pointing to the heavens. There’s writing underneath on a plaque, as well, but you can’t see from this distance. There are several students either reading, meditating (or they might be asleep, you don’t know) or otherwise just staring out at the scene. No one’s talking loudly, but you can hear a few hushed whispers and quiet discussions here and there. There’s a smell permeating the air, too, that reminds you of pineapples.

You see one young boy in robes give you a quick bow before turning back to his quiet conversation. Casually moving off to the side, you lean against a wall, a bit away from other students, your head mostly down so no one can get a solid view of your face. After a couple of minutes of simple observation, you come to the conclusion that the pavilion seems much as the name describes...likely this seems to just be a place of relaxation and general peace.

Well, it’s the centerpiece for a reason. Might as well take a looksee. Casually, you walk up to the statue and take a quick read.

The Unnamed Mage

A symbol of man’s potential and belief. He who dares to acknowledge the greatness of possibility, the ever expanding ways of achievement. This is to represent that any man, common or noble, with a spark of faith in him, and a will to learn can obtain the powers of the heroes of old.

Hm. Well, that wasn’t very informative. And frankly, you thought it was a bit...typical, is the best word you can think of. Fortunately, no one seems to really think anything of you for the time being. Walking up to the think, you notice that there’s a strange mark underneath the words, however- it looks like a backwards ‘s’, overlaid with an X, as if it’s crossed out, within a circle. You’re not sure what that means, and you can’t say you’ve ever seen the symbol before. There were no such symbols around campus or anything, so it’s not a school insignia or anything…

As you walk away from it, you gather an idea in your head. You’re not really used to using more abstract spells, but you have learned a few to help out here and there. You focus, and cast an auditory perception amplification spell (or as you preferred to call it, hearing boost) within a few moments. As soon as it goes off, you can hear sounds MUCH clearer, as if everyone who is talking is doing so at normal volume. It’s still a bit of a chore to pick out any decent conversations; most of them are school discussions…

“So you’re sure you understand the material? Magister Catley won’t go easy on you…” Blah.

“...nothing like what the stories say. Probably an illusionist. No one’s got that kind of mana capacity.” Hm. Wonder whether they’re talking about you or the others…

“I don’t know if I want to go to an arena fight…place sounds scary…” Hah. That was the kid from earlier. “You’ll be fine, you big baby! No one’s going to attack you, and we’re going for extra credit study anyway. Seeing how two foreigners do magic will be cool!” Huh. So word’s gotten out about that...

“...just glad I’m nearly done. Advanced classes have been really strange lately…” Hello. That might be worth something.

Ugh, fucked up the formatting. Ah well, hopefully you get the idea.

>>546462
..you casually walk over a few feet closer to the speaker- an older looking girl with long red hair, talking to a shorter girl with curly brown hair and glasses. “Just, less about doing magic and more observational stuff, y’know? You’d think it’d be the reverse, but lately I’ve just been looking at spells being cast and then getting asked how it worked. They don’t even ask me to repeat it.”

“Well, observational skills are really important, after all...knowing how to see how a spell works quickly could be really useful…” the smaller girl counters.

“Yeah, but we learned that in year one. Why go over it again?” The older girl scoffs. “Whatever. Praise the Noble One, I’ll be done here soon…” she pauses and you can see her shake her head. “I can’t believe I’m actually getting more into that stuff, but I have to admit it makes sense…”

The younger girl nods. “It is amazing how it all just seems to click one day, huh? Magister Tannen is really good with that.”

“So’s Magister Bayliss, when he’s not stuffing his face.”

The two break down into quiet giggles, and as they start talking about boys, you realize that’s the best you’re going to get from them.

You manage to make your way out of the pavilion, not wanting to risk it, and prepare to try a new area-

“Hi, sweetie, are you new here? I can’t say you look familiar.” Oh damnit and a half. You turn around and of course it’s a lady- teacher judging by how old she seems to sound- not to mention tall. You come up just under her chest, for goodness’ sake, and you keep your head down as much as possible- so unfortunately you can’t see her face. “Oh, come now, don’t be shy. Where are you headed? If you’re a first year, you should be in class- I think most of them should be in gym right now.” She places her hands on her hips. “I hope you’re not planning on cutting. Mages need physical ability, too!”

At first you're about to groan, moan, and maybe decide to play along with her if only long enough to get her off your back, but suddenly a spark of inspiration hits you- this might be more of a good thing than you thought. You do your best to effect a shy and humble demeanor. You have to admit, it's not exactly easy. "I'm actually looking for Magister Tannen's office, and seem to have gotten lost."

"Oh..." there's a brief moment of silence from her. "Well, his office is the other way, dear. Go about three halls down, then turn left, and it should be the third door on your right." There's another brief pause, but she speaks up before you can respond to her. "I'm not sure if he's in right now, however. Maybe I should come with you just to be sure. If he's not home, I'll have to walk you back to class."

"No." She jumps a little at that. "I mean, no, thank you. I'm not skipping, but it is a personal matter." That, and you really don't want her around longer than necessary. Hopefully she'll get the hint without getting too suspicious.

She seems to think about it for a bit, but in the end, she sighs in agreement. "Alright, but I'm going to be asking about you later, Little Miss Shy. What's your name?"

"...Violet," you say. Like heck you're giving away your real name, and you can't really think of anything better off the top of your head. Fortunately, she seems to accept that.

"Alright, then. I trust that you will be as brief as possible. Education is important, especially for young, malleable minds like yours." Oh, if only you knew. You nod in faux understanding, and she smiles. "Like I said," she repeats as she walks away, "I'll be asking about you later, so I don't want to learn that you didn't show up. I'd hate to have to punish you!"

You rather wouldn't want that.

It's not really that long of a walk to his office. Knocking on the door, you very quickly hear a jovial voice. "Come in, come in!"

Magister Tannen's clearly in a good mood. You're not sure whether that's a good or a bad thing for your purposes. You and subtle interrogation never really mixed that well, although you had your moments of extreme cleverness. As you open the door, you finally get a good look at Tannen. He's a thin, beautiful looking fellow with spiked hair. Really, he kind of reminds you of someone that should be in magazines, or movies. He's got a great smile, and eagerly waves you inside. "Well now. I must say, you caught me at an excellent time. Just finished lunch!" He then stops, and gives you a closer look. "Mind if I ask your name? I can't say I recall you..." that might be because you still have your head half buried in your cloak.

"Call me Violet, and..."

>What are you planning to ask him? What's the plan?

This might be a bit slower paced than normal.
>>
>>548354
>Ask for recommendations on extracurricular books and texts on The Noble One.
>>
>>548354
>Ask what new guys (like 'us') are supposed to do, and write it down on the memo
maybe we can check for any indoctrination methods by searching through said steps, although if this is too risky then ignore this
>Ask about that recent event, the giant, and ask his opinion about it, and any info he might know. also ask to recommend anything related to said legends.

Lets tug the string that brought us here.

>"I've been having some issues with our advanced studies, is all, specifically in regards to all the observational material and, er, references to the Noble One. >>
>>548362
>I would have gone to Magister Bayliss, but I can't seem to find him

You're essentially calling Tannen the second choice. Dunno what you're going for but 'I couldn't find Bayliss so you will have to do' is probably not the right thing to say.
>>
>>548385
Why not? It could make him step up his game, and be eager to demonstrate why hes the better choice.

That said, its not to big a deal. Just omit that part

It does seem like they're gradually being put under suggestion and are indoctrinated by less mundane methods.

Now the question is, are the teachers all in on it or was it devised by someone a long time ago, and they're all under the spell too since their own time as students?
>>
>>548412
Dunno. Tannen and Bayliss are noted as being particularly good at the whole indoctrination part, so hopefully we are on the right track and they arent just super charismatic or something.
>>
>>548354
"...I was hoping to get a bit of help from you." In more ways than one.

Tannen chuckles and nods. "Of course, of course. Completely understandable. Slight problem though, I'm afraid I can't really spare a ton of time to tutor students. I'm normally a very busy guy- like I said before, you're actually pretty lucky you caught me right before I was about to head out to a teachers meeting.

Okay. If you were anyone else- ANYONE, you might have left slip the quick shift of his eyes. But you've been in this game for far too long to let any kind of facial expressions slide when you're talking to someone. "That's alright," you reassure him. "It's just...I've been having some issues with our advanced studies, is all, specifically in regards to all the observational material and, er, references to the Noble One. I was told by some other students that you were really good with helping to make that stuff click."

His mouth makes a little 'o' of understanding, which shifts into a knowing grin. "Ahhh, you must be one of Bayliss's kids. Good man, knows the magics well, great attitude...but I'm sure you realize that he has a bit of trouble concentrating when there are sweets in front of him." He gives a conspiring wink like it's a giant secret. "I'm flattered you came to me. Like I said, I'm not in a position to give you a ton of personal attention, but if you wanted some general advice..."

"That'd be lovely, thank you," you say, trying to keep your voice low and quiet. "It's just a bit frustrating, considering how hard I worked to get here. I was the only one in my family with any kind of magical aptitude. I didn't think I would be able to make anything of it until I was told about the college. No one in my village really knew anything about it..." Wow, you really really hope he's buying all of this.

Fortunately, he seems to be. "And praise the Noble One for rewarding your struggles thus far." He's speaking in a calmer and gentler voice now. "I'll help you to be the greatest Noble mage you can be. Look, how about I give you some reference material to look up, and you look through those you come see me again? I'd also suggest paying a visit to the Focus Chambers, to help you get in touch with the truth of what it means to be a mage in the light of the Noble One."

Well. "That sounds perfect."

-------

Approximately ten or so minutes later, you walk out of Tannen's office with a list of five books that he had been essential to 'understanding the truth.' The names of some of them were a bit...strange. But they'd likely have a great deal of information.

The only question was whether to stick around and try to get more information, or quietly try to sneak out and make for the library again.

No, you're on a trail. Best to keep searching while you've still got the opportunity. Next stop, the Focus Chambers. You just hope you don't run into that teacher again before you can scope them out. At least it seems like most students are in class...

It's a bit of a trek to where the Focus Chambers are- a large, large building that reminds you of an enclosed stadium. When you you get inside, the first thing you notice is that the foyer seems kind of like a ticket booth or the sort. Then you notice what seems to be a check-in booth. Maybe a hotel is a better description...

No one's at the desk at the moment, so you take the opportunity to slip past, and head into the hallway. It looks like the chambers are right next to each other, but as you walk you dont hear so much as a peep. It's actually somewhat eerie, especially given the fact that there seems to be small viewports in the doors. Most of the chambers are dark and don't seem to be in use, but there are a few that you can see a sickly pink glow come out of. Might as well take a look.

From what you can see, the chambers are pretty large- giant, dome shaped areas with the same things in all of them- a raised pedestal on which a student is sitting, some in Lotus position, others simply sitting normally, and above them, a single crystal about the size of a lightbulb that seems to be the source of the strange pink light. Dollars to donuts that was the cause of any subliminal messages. You don't want to risk alerting any of the students or faculty to your skulking about...but if they are being messed with, maybe it might be a good thing. Hmm...either way, how to get closer is the question now. A quick tug on an empty room confirms they're locked. Looking back, you can still see that the receptionist isn't back yet.

>You'll just ask about the crystals later, get out for now.
>See if you can get the receptionist to give you a room when she gets back.

>>
Alright I can work with this. Writing.
>>
>>548578
Hm. Alright, no, you're going to need to take a careful look at this if you want to uncover anything important. You take a quick look around- wherever the receptionist is, she seems to be taking her sweet time. You quickly dart back to the desk and take a look around. There's nothing immediately obvious that sticks out to you as any sort of key or anything- there's a couple of drawers that you check- nothing. She might have the unlocking mechanism on her...which means time to stake out the situation.

Giving a quick look upwards, you can see that there's some steel beams high up. It takes some careful jumping- the hallways seem to be stylized to where there's slight ridges above the doorways leading to the chambers themselves- but you manage to make it into the area where the crossbeams are, far above anyone's normal viewpoint. They might spot you if they're looking up and specifically for you, but there's an area where two beams cross, and that forms enough of a platform that you can look down and see the hallway fairly clearly. Time to stake the place out. Hopefully it won't be too long.

After about fifteen minutes of absolutely nothing happening, the receptionist walks back- you can barely see them from here due to your angle, but you can see a pair of thing legs and shoes walk back and sit behind the counter. When she does, you can see something hanging from her neck- you're not sure from this distance, but it looks like a long, thin crystal. The key, most likely.

There's another five minutes that pass before suddenly she gets up and begins walking down the hallway. Soon, she comes into clear view- long black hair, robe like everyone else- if a bit shorter, and she's got blue with gold trim. She stops by one of the occupied doors, and holds the crystal up to it, closing her eyes. The crystal blinks white briefly, and the pink glow from inside fades. Only after it's completely faded does she open the door. “Lawrence Vaughn? Your time is complete for today.” She's got a soft, easy voice. “Thank you for utilizing our services so that you may better yourself in the way of the Noble One.” A little robotic, though.

The kid soon exits- he's a brown haired, bushy looking sort. His face looks at hers with something approaching reverence, and he quickly smiles and nods. “Thank you. I, uh...Praise the Noble One, I'll be sure to be back!” His voice has a similar soft lilt to it, although you wouldn't say his was robotic. Just eager.

A few others come in and out, and it seems to be similar. There's very little visually that changes- you swear some of them have a little more pink in their eyes, but you're not sure from this height- but of the several of them that talk, their voices are a lot harder and more sure of themselves, but once they come out, they're soft, lilting, and in some cases unsure. This lasts for about a half hour or so...

>>548737
Yeah they are using good old subliminal messaging, hypnosis and conditioning in order to create more mellow wizards that wont go on horrible rampages across the kingdoms.

“Hey! Hello? I'm here for my next session?” Huh. That voice sounded vaguely familiar.

“Oh, yes, Jessica! Sign your name and come right on in!” As the girl does so, you're somewhat surprised to find that it's the same girl from earlier in the Serenity Pavilion that tipped you off about Tannen in the first place. She seems...disgruntled, and the receptionist notices. “Oh, now, Jessica, don't make that face. You need this to pass, don't you? Not to mention, don't you want to be a great mage?”

“Yeah, yeah...I guess...” her eyes are shifty- and it's clear she doesn't want to be here but at the same time knows she needs to be. “I just wish I didn't have to sit around for an hour.” She and the receptionist both walk into view, stopping near an empty chamber.

“Ah, but that is the point!” the receptionist counters. “Only by understanding the nature of ourselves in relation to the world, and the Noble One in relation to ourselves, is how we can achieve true mastery in magic. And that must be done in quiet contemplation.”

“I know...and I guess I would never ask to cut some time off this stupid-” and as soon as that word slips out, the receptionist gasps.

“JESSICA! Language!” And suddenly the receptionist is sharp, ramrod straight, and reminds you more of a military CO rather than a sleepy attendant. “You should know that the Noble One did this in order to understand how best to grant this boon to us and only us! It is NOT stupid. NONE of what he did was stupid, and you'd be a fool if you believed otherwise!” She's outright GLARING at the girl now, who's cowing deeply.

“I-I'm sorry, you know I didn't mean it! I just say things sometimes! My mouth goes faster than my head!” She babbles out. Fortunately for her, the receptionist seems to cool down, breathing in and out deeply. She then unlocks the door with little fanfare.

“Yes, well, let's hope some time today in here will cause that to stop, hmm?” The way she looks is exceedingly polite, but you can tell there's steel behind those words, and Jessica seems to understand as well, as she steps in without complaint. The door is locked, and the receptionist walks away.

Hmmm...interesting. Problem, though. You're stuck up here.

...It's another hour before she finally leaves and you're able to escape without anyone noticing. The grounds are largely empty, and from what you can tell, the Focus Chambers' housing is one of the four bigger buildings on campus. You make sure to hide behind a tree large nearby it, and you're sandwiched next to a low wall, as you plan your next move. Staying any longer might be too risky- more and more students are starting to walk around. You get the impression school might be letting out soon, and if they have wards...

For now, let's see what reading materials they're using as part of the indoctrination process.

You quickly jump, swing up onto a tree branch, and hop over the wall, landing behind some bushes outside. Fortunately, the area's got a bit of land between it and the rest of the city, so no one saw you hop it. It's a quick jaunt to get back to the streets, and you begin heading in the direction of the library. On the way there, you give the situation a bit of thought.

So, it's still speculation, but it seems that it's entirely possible that those Focus Chambers are part of their methods of indoctrination. That, plus how the other teachers consistently talked...more than likely it's a multi-layered setup to allow them to cover all angles. Those crystals are likely a vital key, if not THE key, but there's no way to prove it right now. You'll have to think of a way to get one of them...

Once you arrive at the library, the librarian looks you in the face, and brightens. “Oh! Why, hello there! It's an honor to have you back!” Oh, so she knows... “If I'd known you were hoping to study possible Creation attacks, I'd have tried to help you out a bit more the other day!”

“That's fine...I'm just looking around for a few books...” And you quickly show her the list.

She gives it a once-over...then she looks back at you, then the list, then you again in apparent surprise- gleeful surprise, if her expression is anything to judge from. “Ohhh wow! I'm so glad you're interested in learning the faith of the Noble One! Here- I'll make up for the other day by helping you get those. I just KNOW you'll feel more at peace when you learn just how important he is in life!” Ugh. Now that you're digging into this whole thing, Alban's feeling a lot more weird.

Soon enough, you're again looking through books. The librarian's assistance made things go much faster, and she even pointed out a quiet corner for you to sit in without anyone else nearby, which you thanked her for. After she leaves you be, however...time to start.

Orind, the God Amongst Mortals

Knowing the Risen God's Grace

Enlightenment of Men by the Knowledge of Gods

'Orind, the God Amongst Mortals' seems to be an account of what the hero Orind seemed to do in his heyday, and ascribed various meanings behind what he did and how he did it. As it happens, a lot of what he did was apparently slay monsters. The Frost Colossus, the Mountain Snake, the Storm Wyvern, the Bloodleech. Various names, and all about how he sought to slay these monsters and why. They kept saying stuff like 'the Mountain Snake sought to expand the greed in men's hearts, and great Orind was troubled at this corruption of man, and so when it was slain, the good and righteous felt more at ease, understanding that only through personal sacrifice and'- blah blah blah. You do get the general idea, though. They seem to believe that humanity was horrible before him, and that monsters were the cause-so for every monster slain, he improved the lives of humanity by reducing the pull of some kind of vice. You can't say you see a correlation, though...

Eventually, he slew one particular monster- 'Styglos, The Chaotic Dragon', and apparently for that he was granted godhood- his body was never found, only his sword, which is kept in a secret vault in the royal castle in Albania. Hah. Moving on.

'Knowing the Risen God's Grace' is basically about how Orind apparently watches over man and makes sure they don't fall to their super chaotic ways again, and apparently how horrible and strenuous it must be. A lot of 'if you love mankind, you'll be good so he won't be so troubled' kinda stuff.

'Enlightenment of Men by the Knowledge of Gods', for such a long title, is mostly a book of fables and tall tales, apparently either stories which were told in some form by Orind when he was human, or otherwise witnessed by people who watched him work. Most of them seem to have the general message of 'humanity is great, in fact, we're the best!' and not much else.

'The Trials of the Faithful and Heroic' are-

“Excuse me.” Huh? You look up, almost startled out of your reading binge.

Sorina's standing in front of you, nearly shivering, but staring you right in the eye. “I...I'm sorry to interrupt you, but...I need that book.” she points at 'The Paving of the Way of Truth' as well. “That one, too.”

Huh. Fancy that. You set the book aside, and stand up to look at her evenly- despite her having at least a head on you, she's the one frightened. She's still shaking, even...but she holds your stare. "Please."

I dunno, i kinda like the intimidation factor we have going on. Explaining ourselves seems rather unnecessary since it should be obvious that if we wanted to kill them at that point, we wouldnt be having a face to face right now.

Plus we may very well end up having to kill them shortly.
>>
>>549019
surely explaining ourselves and smoothing the friction might help in persuading them. I mean, sure, we COULD just murderize them and be done with it, but it's risky, and hey, we may get a bonus.
>>
>>549019
She will be scared of us either way, simply from her understanding our insane power level.

I'm thinking two things here.
One is that if we are actually working toward the same goal, they'll join with us and all is fine and dandy.
Two is that what they are doing is opposed to us and we will have to fight anyway- she'll still have knees made of jelly. We just admitted to being able to, in a split second, /dial down/ one of our attacks so that it /only neutralized one of their trump cards/.

It's a veiled threat that I'm sure she'll pick up on. We still have the duel too where we can really drive home how powerless they are against us.
>>
>>549019
I don't like the intimidation, that was a mistake IMO. Sure it makes us seem more badass and weak people will do what we say out of fear but we can get that with a show of force anyway. It also brings more random encounters (from self-righteous would-be heroes), makes everyone distrust us and makes stealth/disguise missions much harder.
If we wanted to look like a deamon we could just rip someones head off and drink their blood or some shit.
>>
>>549021
I dont really want to murder them. Im just advocating we play to our strengths. We are kinda specced for intimidation, and they are in the dark about us. Acting placating and explanatory cuts away at our threat. She was scared of us well before the battle, so the golem thing isnt so much an issue

Plus we aint exactly amiable to begin with, so pretending to be apologetic may be kinda disingenuous coming from us, and offering up info that gives them any kind of bead on our abilities is really just not something we should do. Mystery is way more scary.
>>
>>549025

not really? just because we act kind doesn't mean we suddenly don't have the power to murderer the continent when we feel like it. and remember, we're setting the fight option as the last option here, or at least that's what I'm getting from the opinions. maybe. so we should at least loosen her panic down a bit before we get all talky talky.

>and offering up info that gives them any kind of bead on our abilities is really just not something we should do. Mystery is way more scary.
then we don't answer those specific questions. not all of it will be revealing, won't it?
>>
>>549032
Tell you what, before we get all mollifying, lets pick her brain so we can get an idea of where we stand first before blurting out unbidden explanations to someone whose group we may end up fighting? Thats all im really saying. If she turns out to be unwilling to speak, then we can assuage some of their fears as the come, rather than dumping it all as an awkward intoduction.

We were perfectly amiable to the teachers in the university. We should act in the manner that has the greatest chance of success. "Look at me I'm a hardass 24/7" is ridiculous, some people like that moron with the flaming sword gets his shit kicked in for being a fucking tool, same with the marauder chief and that's completely fine because they'd never be swayed by puppy eyes and shoe gazing.

Here we have a terrified little girl. Any more intimidation and threats here is going to make her clam up completely and we're going to lose our chance at recruitment, which is our goal.

All she's getting from my write in is "I can kill your entire group with a single full power spell if I want to, so I dialed down the power". It's well established that she is afraid, we don't need to make any overt threats. Her mind will do it all on its own.

>>549036
I just want to make her comfortable enough to speak without running away if we sneeze. Once she actually sits down and we've said our introductions we start the interrogation.
When I wrote clear up misgivings I didn't mean that we should reveal our secret identity I'm sorry if I was vague. In my mind the conversation was going something like "well you look scary" "yeah but I'm not", not "you're a monster" "no I'm a hundred year old merc from a pocket dimension".
>>
>>549036
>Tell you what, before we get all mollifying, lets pick her brain so we can get an idea of where we stand first before blurting out unbidden explanations to someone whose group we may end up fighting?
well, I was assuming that we would be extracting information from her, asking questions ourselves and stuff, while answering things ourselves. a exchange, not blurting out.

I think I see, you were anticipating her responses. As it was written, it struck me as kinda longwinded and desperate to explain ourselves, which i dont think will serve any of our goals. I dont mind acting less intimidating to calm her, im just leery of infodumping to preempt her, as im worried it will seem too appeasing.

Plus if we really want to, we can force this discussion with her. Theres little chance she can run

No, it isn't. We don't get assigned jobs in low magic realms because we require magic to function. It would take our manager doing an incredibly shitty job for us to end up in a low magic realm.

That said, isn't one of our co-workers a weapon master? Training with her would be fun.

Well, now. If she's going to come all this way to say hi, it'd be silly to not take advantage of the situation."Not yet.” You say, and she balks. Before she can stammer up a reply, you point at the chair across from you on the table. “Take a seat.” She looks back at the chair briefly, before looking back at you with clear confusion written on her face. Still, without saying a word, she gingerly sits down, hands in her lap.

You steeple your hands idly- before quickly separating them. That was almost too typical, and you settle for simply letting them rest normally on the table. “We have a more urgent matter to discuss before I decide if I want to give up those books.”

That at least catches her attention. “A-about what?”

“The battle the other day,” you clarify. “We saw each other, and I noticed that-”

“I'm sorry!” She blurts out, and closes her eyes in fear.

Well, that really wasn't what you expected. “...I beg your pardon?”

“The, uh...well...” she seems to have some trouble spitting it out, but you must've been making your frustration known on your face, as you can see her blanch a bit as she begins to elaborate. “Ta- my friend's attacking- he didn't see you- none of us did. One of our... number was lost in the panic, and we've been trying to find them.” You can tell by her phrasing and pacing that she's picking her words carefully so as to not give you too much information, for whatever reason. “When we got to the front, all we saw was the Iron Giant, and thought it had to be stopped. When it paused, we'd thought we'd crippled it somehow, and he wanted to finish it off...but that attack...” she trails off, the implications clear. “For a brief time I thought you were behind it...the assault, I mean.”

“No, and that was honestly kind of stupid.” She flinches at the blunt response, but seeing no other reaction, you continue. “Right, anyway, about that. Firstly, I used Nebula Bu-” NO. “-I counter-attacked from inside the golem because I didn't want to be blown up by your boyfriend.”

She jerks up, looking at you as she blushes a HOT red. “He's not my boyfriend! He's just...a friend.”

...Not dignifying. Way too common. “Anyway. It was a snap decision in a battle, not an intended attack. I made sure to carefully temper and time it to only neutralize his attack.” For a quick second, you can see her eyes dilate, constricting into pinpricks for a second. Her mouth opens as if to say something, but snaps shut quickly. Kinda reminded you of a fish, honestly.

>>550106
You just shrug. Her choice on whether to believe you or not. “I trust there's no hard feelings, right?”

She rapidly shakes her head. “No, none at all.”

“Excellent. Now, secondly.” NOW you steeple your fingers. “Who do you think I am?”

She actually reels back a little at this. “I-I'm sorry? What do you-”

“I mean you've been tiptoeing around me for quite some time. I want you to tell me exactly what your image of me is in your head- and then I will clear up the misgivings you have.” You lean back on the chair, slightly tilting it. “Gonna be honest, the way you behave around me is frankly pretty bothersome. So out with it.”

She seems torn- you can visibly start to see sweat form on her face. “I-I...I meant no disrespect...”

You sigh. “Whatever it is, I've been called worse.”

She lowers her head. “I...I thought you were maybe a spy or an agent for... someone we ran into a while back.” She shakes her head, then looks at you with a steady gaze. “I knew you had a lot of power since the first time I saw you...I can tell. It's just...something I've always been able to do. I don't know how to explain it, but it's like a strange...radiation. An aura. Something visible to me, that doesn't seem to be visible to others. And you...yours is unlike anything I've ever seen.” Especially up close, it's...” She turns away. It's...scary. Chaotic, and raging, but controlled at the same time. Even now...I kinda just want to get as far away from you as possible, even though I know I can't.”

Interesting.

You huff slightly. “I'm only scary when I need to be. Or rather, I only TRY to be scary when I feel it's necessary. It just so happens that 'when necessary' tends to be fairly often.”

“Ah, I...I see.” She wrings her hands a bit. “I guess that makes sense, for...whatever it is you do, or whatever you are...” Pardon? You're not certain if that was an insult or a legit statement of how she perceives you. Bah, moving on.

“So what's this other person you're talking about? Who was it that you ran into?” you question. You're wondering if that was the moment Torvald mentioned...

She looks off to the side again, but soon refocuses on you. “Oh, well...I don't know if you know, but...are you aware of the Knights of the New Moon?” Oh, hello. You remain silent, in order to let her speak. “They're...they're a strange faction. They say they want to reset the world, that everyone's being led in the wrong directions, that...that if either side wins, they'll bring the world to ruin, one way or another. I think they said, 'through fire and sword, or through chains and the pulpit.' It was...freaky.” She stares off into the distance as though she's reliving a memory- probably is- but soon continues. “His name was Velan, and we ran into him three weeks ago in the Wildlands. He said he was a Knight of the New Moon... and he moved like a snake. We could barely hit him. We ran him off, but...he nearly killed me and...”

Hm. Interesting. “And...?” you press.

She sighs. “Nerissa. She is...was...the last member of our group. The most experienced, too. Used to be a soldier. After the fight, we retreated near the frontier in hopes that we could hide out for a bit, heal up. We stumbled on a farm, and...her leg wasn't getting much better, and the farmer was really, really nice...” She sighs and purses her lips to keep her composure. “She left us then and there. Said that she'd just slow us down, and that she'd always wanted a simpler life.” She chuckles. “She did say if we needed the help, she'd come, but...”

“It's rough, knowing that a friend abandoned you.” you offer.

“I refuse to believe it was abandonment,” she counters. “Just...she'd been fighting for so long...she got tired. She was hoping to end the war herself, I think. She never told us her motivation for joining us...I think the news of another major faction really hit home that day, and she'd just decided that enough was enough.”

>>
>>550573
I agree, it's a longshot, but after the heat of the moment died down perhaps what they were saying started to make sense. She wants to end the war. They want to end the war. Maybe she wanted a less murderous encounter away from her naive and half-brainwashed former team.

You lean forward, sensing a decent opening. “And what about you?” you ask. “What's your reason for being here? Part of the college maybe- here for higher learning?”

“What? Oh, no no no...actually, I'm...I'm self-taught.” She blushes. “I was born in a small village, and we didn't have any way to learn magic aside from some books...no one wanted to take me to the city, because it was so far away. People said I had a knack for it, but I wasn't sure...then Tavis found me, and we agreed to travel together. The others...came a bit later.”

Interesting. “So what's your goal? Why are you all traveling together?”

She looks around. “We...well, on the whole, we all kind of have different goals in life- I want to be a great mage, but I haven't built up the nerve to look at the Mages' College yet. I've...I've been told now that I here that I should join by several people, but it's just so intimidating...” Wow, really? Well, suppose that might be a blessing in disguise.

“Tavis wants to be a great hero, like in the old days,” she continues. “Orind is his idol, and he swears that his powers come from that. Basil wants to rescue his father...he's an old military sort who was captured by Horinth forces. Adel's looking to be the best swordsman alive, although I suspect there's something else there...hasn't told us, though. But...I think after Nerissa...” she looks at you with determination. “...we all want to end the war first. We all want what we want, but...not at the cost of so many lives.”

Hm. She seems sincere about that, but there's a few things that you want to clarify, then. “Alright then. In that case, I've got a few further questions for you.”

“I, uh...alright?” At the very least she doesn't seem as scared at the moment. Either that or she's finally managed to mask it for a bit. “I suppose that can't hurt...”

“How do you plan to do it? Stop the war, I mean.” That was the most important thing you had to figure out. “After all, the Knights of the New Moon want to stop it as well- according to you.” You didn't want to let anything about you slip, even vaguely. “You don't think your interests align? After all, numbers on your side would help greatly.”

She snorts. “I really doubt they want the same kind of stopping that we do. We just want Alban and Horinth to be at peace with each other, like they used to be! They...they just want total destruction. They want to annihilate both sides! That can't happen!” Oh, she's finally got some fire in her eyes...even if it might be misguided. “One or two of them might be alright, but the majority of them...”

“You've encountered them?” you ask. It's less a genuine question and more comparing notes.

“Well, I, uh...no, not really,” she admits. “Just two of them. Velan and a bigger fellow earlier, his name was...Torvald, if I recall. It's a shame, though.” And she sounds genuinely disheartened. “He was really nice, and we didn't even know he was a Knight! He was just- just a really strong soldier who helped us fight off some rockdogs. He-he even said he liked Basil! But...I guess the siege later near the coast was his fault. Velan told us that Torvald was behind it once he said who he was. Part of me didn't want to believe him, but...”

Hm. Curious. “I suspect it's not the best idea to take one member's statements and actions as truth. You never know what might be embellished.”

“I know,” she agrees, “but we haven't seen him again, and we know the New Moon's conducted raids...it's entirely possible. I wish I could give him the benefit of the doubt...but with what I heard, I don't think I'd be right...”

“At any rate, you never answered the question,” you point out. “How do you intend to stop the war?”

“Oh! Well, uh...” and now she's back to being shy- actually, no. It's less shy, more cagey now. “Honestly, we...sorta kinda hoped that by getting through to Horinth we could stop them from launching any more assaults. We...we've been...hoping to find some things to help convince the King of Horinth to stop-”

“The Great Creations, possibly even the Centerpiece,” you interrupt.

She pauses briefly, then nods. “Right, I forgot you know all about them...we'd been searching for them- mainly for the Centerpiece parts. We found one!” Iiiinteresting. But she doesn't elaborate where, and you're unsure it'd be smart to push the issue. “But we still need the others. You sent the Iron Golem away, and it still has a Centerpiece part in it- we were hoping to go after it sooner than later, I'll admit...but yeah, we were thinking the Great Creations and the Centerpiece would be enough to convince Horinth to lay off! Alban isn't the one dictating the lives of all its people from birth!”

“Are you sure about that?”

Sorina freezes. You continue after a couple of seconds of getting no response. “You're smart to be intimidated by the college. Avoid it entirely, in fact.” You lean in closer. “There is something...expressly sinister beneath that facade.”

She cocks an eyebrow in disbelief, and starts to open her mouth to speak her confusion, but you beat her to the punch. “Tell me.” Her jaw snaps shut. “Do you believe in your ability. This...visible aura?”

She shifts her eyes briefly. “I-I can't say it's failed me yet.”

“Good. Then what you see on me should tell you that magic is something I am VERY well acquainted with, and likely understand far better than you can imagine. Sorina.” You make sure you have her full attention as you speak next. “There is something very odd going on in there. I want to find out what it is.”

Sorina suddenly looks lost. “But...what? How? Why?”

You sigh. “Because everyone has something they want to keep from the world, Sorina. Especially things like this.”

If the moonmen actually are assholes I guess the kids have to die, but seems like if we give them enough of an advantage to actually win and they're decent or even reasonable I'm sure we can work it out.

However, if a single moon knight could beat them up, cripple one and nearly kill another why would they want them on their side? There are apparently plenty of adventuring parties in this world, wouldn't it make more sense to send us after dangerous targets?

>There are apparently plenty of adventuring parties in this world, wouldn't it make more sense to send us after dangerous targets?
The Longshots are the only adventuring party to have successfully retrieved a part of the Centerpiece, regardless of their lack of prowess compared to the top of the Knights.
That's probably why.

Also, the Longshots didn't win against a top member of the Knights; that doesn't mean that they can't steamroll the rank-and-file of the Knights and would therefore still be a threat.

We needed to use a fairly high amount of mana to counter their ace from one of their members; they've got 3 others.

Miranda reminded herself that she's far from invincible and had to learn about her own vulnerability in very painful lessons.
Don't ignore warnings from the character herself.
>>
>>551413
You're not going to try and crush her ideas about Alban just yet. You still have evidence to gather. But she seems like a fairly smart girl. Perceptive, analytical. Very much quick to learn if what she said earlier about herself was any accurate. “I've looked into a few things about the...educational system here. It's rather enlightening about some of Alban's values. If you want to learn more, come back around here tonight.” You look around, making sure no one's listening in. “I'll show you some actual 'truth'.”

She gasps a little, but she says nothing. You lean back, and gently slide 'The Trials of the Faithful and Heroic' towards her. “I hope you don't mind if I would ask to compare notes once you're done?”

She looks at the book in front of her, then at you. Slowly, cautiously, she nods, picks up the book, pulls out some papers with notes already written, and begins reading. You continue reading as well.

In due time, you eventually learn a bit more info- 'The Trials of the Faithful and Heroic' seemed to be more in the ways of the history of Alban's peoples, and it details how Orind became known as the Noble One- largely due to his friendly, just, and all around righteous behavior- a true paladin of the people, in his heyday. People sought to emulate his great deeds as their form of worship, but in many cases they couldn't replicate his feats exactly, so they turned to worship and praise, although apparently the attempts at general behavior copying stuck around- every ten years, Alban apparently goes on a 'Great Hunt' where a bunch of people group up and try to slay a dragon. It says that succeed or...failure...these hunts are considered the highest honor and are generally only rewards to those who have distinguished themselves either martially or otherwise in the name of Alban and the king. Kind of a macabre reward for being a good person, but apparently the 'ultimate reward' is assurance that 'you will be by Orind's side in the Hereafter.'

Yeah, that doesn't sound like that'd clear at the bank.

'The Paving of the Way of Truth', according to Sorina, is an account of how magic is channeled throughout the world by the gods- and because of Orind's close connection to Alban, any Albanians who believe in him are supposedly granted a greater amount of power than those that don't. Apparently, this is believed to be a sign that Orind wants others to spread his words and style of life to everyone, and is an explanation of why Alban has the lion's share of the mages that exist in the world. You wonder what that made you, then.

After a deal more reading and writing, you both stand to leave. “I'll see you at midnight.” is all you say by way of goodbye. With that, you leave- you're sure Sorina's still looking at you, but you dare not look back.

So it fits!” She lets our a chortle at that. “Seriously, though, your opponent came in here earlier an' started talkin' smack. Think he was hopin' to hype himself up, and have you and him get a little staredown goin'. It was kinda hilarious, though, 'cause he started to tell all these tall tales, and eventually 'e gets a bit too touchy-feeling with one of the bard gals and she BLASTS him over the head with her lute.” She chortles at the thought. “Great stuff! So! Any plans for tomorrow? Big day's the day after.”

Your food arrives as you consider the question. “Well, you mentioned going to the arena in advance. Might do that, if you're still up for joining me.” Geegee claps once as you take a bite of what you presume to be lamb.

“Sounds like a plan! If everything's still the same, I can give ya the basic rundown when we get there!” She takes a quick drink from her own mug- whatever it is, it smells pungent. “I'm just hopin' you won't get mobbed while you're there!”

“I doubt that.” At least, you HOPED that. “At any rate, I'm going to turn in early.” You head towards the stairs again.

“Yeah, well, let's hope I don't haveta wake you up this time!” No, because you'd still be awake...mostly.

Actually, on that front. “Hey, Geegee. Stupid question, but do you have a small pin?” You lower your voice. “Or something else that could fit in a stuck lock?”

Fortunately, Geegee doesn't ask questions.

This was a sneaking mission, so you had to be in good form- but it wasn't quite life or death, so you could afford a bit of rest without falling asleep entirely. Sometimes you found it worthwhile to simply close your eyes for a bit and let yourself drift. You're pretty sure it's not meditation, but you like to think it's something akin to that. It helps in a pinch when you're in a position that actually sleeping would be too risky, anyway. At any rate, it's hours later- and you feel somewhat rested, as planned. You quickly exit- there's a few stragglers outside in the main inn area, but no one gives you a second glance as you head outside.

The trip to the library is quiet, and uneventful. You saw several late night pedestrians, most exhausted or just frustrated to be heading home. At least they had the chance to GET home...

At any rate, you find yourself outside of the library- and sure enough, Sorina is right around the side of it. Seems she's taken a page out of your book, and shrouded herself in a black cloak meant to disguise her face. She's also lacking her staff. “I...part of me thought you were just goading me or something,” she admits once you approach. “Part of me STILL thinks this is just a trick.”

“Good,” you admit. “Means you're keeping on guard, but not dismissing out of hand.” You turn away, and start heading towards the school. Without any prompting, Sorina follows.

The school looks far different at night than it does in the day. When there's light out it seems like a welcoming, shining beacon of learning, bright whites and swooping architecture and open spaces. Now, though, it feels much more malicious- the moonlight gives it a dark, ancient, eerie feel, and the architecture seems more chaotic and threatening than artful. Even Sorina seems to recognize the strangness, hesitating a bit as you approach the gates. “So... how are we getting-”

Without warning you scoop her up in a princess carry, and in one jump, clear the wall. Fortunately you recognize the area, and you quickly set Sorina down (who looks at you with a bewildered expression, but says nothing) and get to moving. “We're heading for the Focus Chambers.”

“What? Why those?” she asks. You don't answer.

When you arrive at the building housing the chambers, you find the door is locked, as expected. You're not exactly a locksmith, but then again...they didn't seem to be too worried about security here. The lock goes down after a few tense minutes of fiddling.

Finally, you're in. “Okay, so...we just broke into the Mages' Collage, for...what?!” Sorina nearly yells, and you shush her, rooting around the desk. Ah, there's the key. You quickly move down the hall- presumably a charge of mana should- yes! It's open.

Sorina looks around the room. “Alright, so...what am I here for?”

“Simple. I'm going to try and start this thing. When I do, I need you to look at that crystal that's hanging up there.” You point up towards the object in question. “I took a look here earlier. The receptionist locks the kids up in these chambers for an hour, have them sit on the pedestal there, and activates it from outside. I noticed that she was very careful to not go near it when it was still glowing.” You scowl a bit in rememberance. “She was avoiding it, so I want you to tell me if you can see anything on the powered up crystal that will make her behavior make sense.”

Sorina takes a look at the crystal- when it doesn't seem to be activated, it's a dull, lifeless grey. “That's strange...I wonder if those crystals are natural. I've never seen any that look quite like that.”

“Well, this is your opportunity to take a good look.” You start walking away when you hear a small cry of distress.

“Hey, wait, what are you doing?” She wails.

You point to the open door. “The way the lady did it, the door had to be closed, and she used the crystal on the door. Relax, I'll be right here, and it won't be for longer than a few seconds.” With that, you close the door on her before she can say anything more, and hold up the crystal like you saw the receptionist do. A spark of mana, and it blinks white just like you expected, the room suddenly being bathed in pink.

You can actually see Sorina through the viewpoint, and you notice that she's not still at all; she's moving around in circles around the sitting pedestal. She's squinting at the crystal in confusion. For a time, she's stock still, gazing at it oddly. She moves again, and you can't see her face anymore...

After a few more seconds, she jerks, then looks at the pedestal for some reason- and you can actually see her take a step or two back. Alright, that might be enough. You give the crystal another spark, and the glow fades.

>>558262
As soon as you step in, she runs up to you. Her face is FRANTIC. “That-that's not-that's a-why is-how aren't they-”
You lightly cuff her about the side of her face. “Stop that. Explain clearly.”

She doesn't seem to take offense, nodding after the small blow and taking a deep breath. “What they're using should be illegal!” What? “At least...I think it should be. The waves...they're rhythmic, almost hypnotizing. Like a small drumbeat or something, but it reminds me of...of something I did once. Something really bad.” She seems to drift off for a moment, but quickly returns. “And it's not just the crystal- the pedestal is doing something, too! Some kind of...I don't know what! It's...it's CATCHING the waves the crystal emits and then pushing them back out, stronger, slower.” She frantically shakes her head.

“I-I...mind-altering spells were illegal- outlawed by the King and Church!" Hm. Outlawed to everyone but themselves, it seems. "Why would the sanctioned Mages' College have this? Why would they even risk it?! How haven't they even been caught?!”

Alrhough I wonder if there's some unseen mechanism above the crystal that we aren't seeing. This whole setup is clearly more complex than we initially thought
>>
> “I suspect they're training absolutely loyal mages. Can you tell me what you did? It may be vital.”
>>
>>558343
Only issue with taking proof is that the college will notice. Dunno what theyll do, but if this shit is as illegal as the kid says, they must have a failsafe or emergency plan of some sort.
>>
>>558368
Maybe we could chip off a small sample of the crystal for now. Something that might otherwise appear to be vandalism.
>>
>>558413
Or another possibility is seeing if we can find any incriminating documents in one of the magisters' offices. We might be able to see just how high up the order is on. If we can connect these focus chambers directly to the crown through documentation, it would be extremely damning.

I want to take the crystal for evidence/find out specifically what they've been doing but we might trip some kind of security. better safe than sorry when we got tomorrow's contest.

>>

Well, yeah, those questions would be the ones someone asks when an institution they thought unflappable was shown to be using possibly illegal methods. “I suspect they're training absolutely loyal mages. Subtly molding them into people who would unquestioningly serve Alban, regardless of the situation. Perfect little tools.” At the very least, you gained something from following orders, and no one ever forced you to take a contract, or do anything you didn't want to. “This would've been your fate if you'd decided to attend. I suspect most if not all of the kids here have done at least a stint or two so far.”

“I...why would they...” She's still shocked.

“Because Alban's by no means innocent either.” You face her, as you close the door. “I'm not going to force you, but if it's possible, can you tell me what you did, when we get out of here?"

She nods, not quite able to form words at the moment. It's frustrating, but at least you've gotten that out of her. Still, this makes you think. Now that you're on campus, and you're certain of SOMETHING going on, you have arguably most of the campus to snoop around on- so long as you're careful of any kind of security.

Then again, said security may not be as simple as you believe it to be. The question is do you want to risk it? It's entirely possible that you won't be able to detect their security, and if you get caught, that'd be horrendous- for both parties involved.

>Snoop around now. This might be your only real chance.

the 'focus' chambers themselves are already good enough of a hard proof, and we now have a witness. Sure, if we find anything fancy, it would mean more dirt to pile up against them, but brainwashing already tilts Alban into the morally awful territory. And we should consider the fact that we have a fight tomorrow, and consider resting. Although by no means we're going into some life-or-death battle arena, but we should just be ready for it.
>>
>>558611
>we have a fight tomorrow
It's the day after tomorrow. Even if you meant that since it's past midnight it's technically the new day, we still have an entire day in which to rest.

>Although by no means we're going into some life-or-death battle arena
We need to take the fight seriously because the kid can output an amount of mana rivaling us.
We need to beat him within an inch of his life, and preferably look like we're not trying very hard.
Remember that healing potions are a thing in this world. It doesn't matter if we break his arms and legs and shatter his jaw; he just needs to take two Greater Healing potions and lie down for a night.

>>558714 here, no I did not mean literally headpat the Mage. I keep forgetting that saying "headpat" might actually have people think you want to pat someone on the head.

Anyway, for clarification, I meant we should reassure her a bit. Even if we're playing the part of a stoic most of the time, it's not a bad thing to show that we care, even a little bit.
>>
>>559032
We dont, though. Poor Miranda isnt even any good at faking sympathy, either. That said, we could totally say something like "its not like this is the first time i've seen something like this. Guess Alban and and Horinth have this sort of thing in common." Makes the only other faction, our employers, look downright wholesome.
>>
>>559032
Fair enough, but consider that we have a pretty crap grasp of showing empathy as a character. If we tried to physically comfort her, we'd probably just come off more creepy than anything else.
>>
>>559091
Well, we've been a magical girl for about 75 years, I think we've still got a scrape of empathy, particularly since Miranda's backstory hasn't been fleshed out yet.

>"its not like this is the first time i've seen something like this. Guess Alban and and Horinth have this sort of thing in common."

Too soon. Wait until after the tournament to mention that, it'll only make Sorina wonder who hired us right now. And considering she's rather smart, she might make that jump of logic pretty quick.

And back.

Preparing to exfil. Writing.
>>
>>558578
Yeah, no, all your instincts are saying it's time to exfiltrate. You tug on Sorina's shoulder, who's still looking a bit lost. “You've seen what I needed you to see. It's time to go.” She just gives you a numb nod, and you get out the same way you did last time- you pick her up and hop the fence. This time she's not nearly so surprised by it, and as you set her down, she just sort of starts walking off in a daze...at least, you think it's a daze and not possibly simply deep in thought. You follow her for a brief time.

“I intended to say something about it publicly. Probably after the competition. You understand why, right?” She nods. “What about you?”

She stops and turns to you. “...I'm sorry, what?”

“What are you going to do about it?” you clarify. “Now that you know what you do, are you going to just let it happen? Are you alright with that?” You doubt she is. Just from what she said earlier, she's a real idealistic sort. Likely she believed a great deal in Alban and what it was doing- you wouldn't be surprised if part of her dream was to attend here- a dream she'd likely been on the cusp of attaining before she realized what a nightmare it would become without her even knowing.

Sure enough, she seems to have difficulty in answering. “I-I...no, I...but Tavis!” She suddenly gets wide eyed. “Tavis is...!” Without warning she hurriedly races off in another direction. You're not sure what's going on there, but whatever it is, it seems important to her.

The neutralization of the Longshots as a threat is our contract objective, so seeing how she handles this thing is our business.

And all things considered, if Tavis wants to become the next Orinth, he's not a good fit for our client's organization.
If this causes her to make things worse and cause a rift in the Longshots that makes individual recruitment of her and the others easier, then by all means, we should watch and let her make things worse.

Whaaaat is this? Writing.
>>
>>559691
Hm. Well, this might either go very well or very poorly, and which was which was entirely dependant on who was the point of reference and what you felt was either at the time. In short, you could tell this was going to get very, very complicated. Might as well keep an eye on things.

It takes a few minutes to tail her- she's running, but it seems like she and her group are on the far side of the town. Admittedly, at first you thought you'd have to get onto the rooftops or the like to keep her in your sights without her keep. But she hardly focuses on anything but her direction. Eventually, she ends up at what seems to be...not an inn, but some sort of cottage or house. You're not sure who it belongs to, but she runs in without a second thought, slamming the door open.

You can immediately hear exclamations of surprise, and you quickly cast your hearing spell again. Soon, voices manage to drift through...

'...okay, now that you're calm, are you alright? You look spooked.' That was a new voice. You're uncertain, but that might be-

'I'm fine, Tavis, it's you I'm worried about.' Ahh.

You can tell he's rather shocked. 'Worried? About me? Why? What's going on?'

'It's just...you were raised by the Church, right? Taught some of the stuff that they teach in the Mages' School, right?' she asks.

'Yeah...but you know that already. Why ask?' you can hear footsteps now- presumably others are walking into the room.

'It's just...I...did they ever use a crystal to help focus your studies?' Hm. Wonder if this was going to go where you thought it was.

'Well...yeah. They called it a serenity crystal, and that it'd always help me to clear my head, remove my doubts. I can't do it on the road, but they had a special room for me to meditate in...Sorina?' Ohhhh. Well, well. That may be an issue.

'Hey, Sori? What's going on with you?' And there's the loudmouth. 'You're acting like you just saw a spirit!'

'Don't we know how to beat spirits, though?' Ah, that deep bass much be Basil. Gotta remember to maybe talk to him later.

'I just...what if the Church...' she seems to be having a hard time spitting it out. 'What if...what if the church has been MAKING you think what you think?'

There's some silence, but it's Tavis who speaks up first. 'I...I don't get it. What do you mean? Make me think about what?'

'EVERYTHING!' she shouts. 'Your life, your devotion to Alban, everything about you! What if that's all just been one big lie?! What if THEY'VE been one big lie!?'

'Whoa, hey now, Sori- you shouldn't go talking like that! That's serious stuff!' Tavis exclaims. 'Look, whoever told you that the Church is anything but good for the people has been feeding you bunk. I should know, I lived with them for the last fourteen years!'

'That's just the problem!' Sorina wails. 'If you've been with them that long, and they've been doing what she thinks, then-'

'Hold on, who's 'she'?' Tavis asks. Damnit.

To your surprise, however, Sorina hesitates. 'Just...someone I met. A girl on the street.' Huh. Interesting.

'Well, she probably just needs to learn more,' Tavis dismisses. 'Some folks like to pin the blame for their misfortune on anyone but themselves, and it always bites them when they do. Trying to blame Orind for their own failures is just going to get them punished.'

'I'd love to know who this chick was,' Adel says. 'For messin' with you like that, I'd probably...well...I'd probably give her a good talking-to! Depends on how cute she is.' You are going to relish stomping him into the dirt. Maybe literally.

'Seriously, Sorina, it's probably just some tall tales- put it out of your head, okay! I'd hate to think you suddenly became heretical just because someone planted a thought in your head.' Yikes. Poor boy has no clue.

'But- I...it's not just...' she sounds out of breath.

'Sorina.' Ah. You can sense the hardening in his voice. 'Trust me, you DON'T want to go down this path. I've seen it before, people start spouting things like 'Orind just liked to kill things', 'Orind isn't a god', 'The Church doesn't care.' All that STUPID stuff, and it's just...it BURNS me up to think that people aren't grateful! I've SEEN what the Church does, I KNOW they're good! They're the ones who cared for me, raised me, taught me how to fight, how to read, basically everything I know comes from them! Why would bad people raise someone like that?!' Does he even realize he's raising his voice? 'And every time, they always vanish! Or next thing you know, they're dead in their homes! How else could that happen BUT divine judgment!? How?!' ...Hm.

'...Tavis, I just...'

'You're tired, Sorina. And so am I. I'm going to bed.' Shortly after, you can hear footstep walk off.

'Gaaah, great timing, Sori. I've gotta practice for the big match tomorrow, and now he's gonna be all...grouchy and stuff.' You can hear him sigh. 'Look, I dunno what happened out there, but maybe sleep on it, huh? Tomorrow, go out, have some fun, forget it. Let Tav cool off, y'know?'

'...R-right.' she says. Then you hear more footsteps move away.

There's a few moments of silence, before suddenly... 'Hey, it's cool. I gotcha. Sometimes, things happen, and it's hard to think of it as a positive. You... start askin' questions. I was like that when Paisal got... yeah.' He sighs a rumbling sigh. 'Don't tell Tavis, but part of me still is. You need a hug?'

'...thanks Basil.' Yeah.

'Hey, wanna know a secret?' he says, and he sounds kinda amused. 'I've fallen asleep in temple before!'

Sorina laughs. Sounds like it's time to go for you. The trip home is easy enough, and your sleep is dreamless. When you get up, though...

“Hey, there's the star!” Seems like Geegee's a morning soul. “Ready ta hit the arena?”

Right, you had promised that. “Lead the way.”

The arena, as it happens, is really more of a coliseum. A large, white, round structure with lots of seating. It's actually astonishingly reminiscent of a modern day stadium- you can even see spots for vendors to set up. “The place is open for anyone durin' daylight hours," Geegee explains. "You can have yourself a friendly spar with non-lethal loaner weapons, or you can have an actual duel if you can snag an official ref.” She snorts. “Good luck findin' one o' THOSE for any event other than a royally sanctioned duel, though. O'course, if you're not up for practicin', we can just watch summa the locals have at it. Heck, might be a good idea ta keep your big stuff to yourself until tomorrow. STSFN, as I heard it called- 'Save That Stuff For Nobles'.” You give her a blank look. “As in wait until the crown's watchin' to impress 'em. Doy.”

While we've been able to get Sorina to start doubting, it's obvious that she's still loyal to Tavis. And we need to work on Basil some more.

As it is, I think Adel and Tavis are lost causes.

Instead, I think we should just let them come after us, and then we'll capture one or two, and then try to rip the information from them, either physically or via magical suggestion.

“I've practically been practicing for decades.” You head up the stairs, leading to some bleachers. “I'll watch some other people smack themselves around for my amusement for a bit.” You get a decent ways up- high enough that you can have a solid view of the various practicing parties- although there's just one big arena, dirt packed, there are several pairs of fighters squaring off for training.

Geegee sputters, and then gives you a grin. “I'm sorry, did you of all people just try ta crack a joke? And here I thought you and humor didn't get along.” She shakes her head in amusement. Hey, I'll be right back- just getting' a drink.”

“Get me one, too.” With that she darts off, and before long, she's back, two mugs in tow. “Didn't have mead, but apple cider's in season!” She hands you a mug as she takes her seat, and you both sit down and watch the folks on the floor. It's honestly a bit refreshing, being able to simply watch from afar, knowing you don't have to get involved. That means you can easily criticize them.

You're only a few minutes into mentally berating one swordsman's stance- his feet are too close together, the sword's too low on his body for the short, quick swings he's trying to use- when Geegee turns to you. “Hey, you're a sword-for-hire, right? What kinda jobs you tend to get? Any preferences?”

You give her a side look. “Not really. I just kinda take what comes.”

She simply nods in understanding. “Gotcha. Just wonderin'.” She pauses. “Say, you ever killed goblins? There ain't exactly a lot of us, y'know. Most don't like comin' off the islands.” She pauses. "Scratch that, most NEVER come off the islands. Heck, I think I'm the only one what did it for longer than a day."

“You're fine. I've never killed a single goblin on this plane.” Not a lie. Actually, if you were being honest, you could safely say that killing goblins in GENERAL was a relatively rare event. And what a goblin was could differ depending on the planes.

“Ah, but what about any other planes?” You blink, then look to her. She just blinks owlishly. “What? I ain't stupid. You're not from around this burg. I'm startin' to doubt you're even from the Black Planes. You don't got the look of an Albanian or Horinthian. Darker, but not like the people out in the Frontier. More like you spent a while in the oven. Like baked bread.”

Wait, what? “Baked bread?”

Why do you think people are callin' you the Burned Demonness? That, and you move like you're used to different physics. Faster, jerkier sometimes. Like you should be swimmin' but you ain't.” She adjusts herself in her seat to look at you better. “Most folks here ain't big into questionin' things, if'n you haven't noticed.” She lowers her voice. “They're real specific on what gets 'em ornery. The rest? They just say 'Let Orind sort it out if we can't.' Makes for real easy upsells.”

“Speaking of that,” and you lower your voice as well. “I've heard tell that there's more to this place than is perceived.” She leans in casually as you continue. “That people who DO ask too many questions tend to...”

“Vanish?” she completes for you. “Yeaahhh...don't go pokin' into that beehive too hard, I'd say. I've heard tell here and there and...” she drops her voice as low as she can, “...let's just say there's more than the Albanian Watch that's prowlin' the streets, ya get me? Folks you wouldn't notice.” She leans back. “But you didn't hear that from yours truly. You say anything, I'm denyin' as hard as possible and you're goin' straight under the wagon wheels.”

“Gee, and here I thought we were something approaching friends,” you deadpan. Geegee just smirks.

>>
>>560704
Ask if she can make some Vanishing Potions for us. And for herself, just in case.
Ask her what she thinks of the Knights of the New Moon, and the war in general.

And answer her question about us.
"Yes, I've killed what were called goblins on some other planes. But what constitutes a goblin changes from plane to plane. I've been to one where they're the best lawyers and bankers in the plane and considered more civilized and respected than elves, others where they're just rapacious little shits that barely have a language."
We've gotten a bit of honesty between us, may as well stay honest.

>Burned Demonness

Seconding this, don't know if she has the resources to make potions after she lost her wagon though. Also a potion of giant strength for the lulls. Because apparantly out of all the things we have killed none of them was a giant.

"Chances are that I've got to, in order to complete a job, Geegee. That being said, if and when they do come, I'd like to find out where they shit at."

"Anyway, do you have any potionmaking skills? I'd like to prepare a bit for later, particularly with something that helps me be more... innocuous... per say. I'd also recommend making some for yourself, as well."

>>560765
>I am for flipping those we can and isolating them murdering the others. They are still good individual fighters.
Yeah, that's the idea. I've got no problem knocking off the evangelist (unless the mage protests against it), but ironically, I do want to keep the showboating twat alive, if only to shove it in his face.
>>
>>560765
The thing that concerns me is that if we kill even one of them, our opportunity to recruit the others plummets. They rightly won't accept us as credible if we murder one of their own, no matter how good our case is. The only really hard sell among them is Tarvis. Basil and Sorina have both shown valid doubts in the system, and Adel doesn't strike he as a pious zealot. Tarvis is the one that we need definitive proof, probably notarized and in triplicate, before we can flip him.

“Gee, and here I thought we were friends,” you deadpan. Geegee just smirks.

You lean back, enjoying the show of people who'd clash against each other with training weapons and imagining the three or four things you could do between each swing if you were down there. "Anyway, to answer your question, yes, I've killed what were called goblins on some other planes. But what constitutes a goblin changes from plane to plane.”

Geegee cocks and eyebrow in curiosity. “Oh? That so?”

“Yeah. Both in looks and general intelligence. I've been to one where they're the best lawyers and bankers in the plane and considered more civilized and respected than even elves-” you take a swing of cider. “And others where they're just rapacious little shits that barely have a language.” You look over at her. “Some are red, some brown, blue, all colors. Some were bigger than you, a couple smaller. Some with more teeth- a lot more teeth.” There was one particular universe where...hoo boy. You shake your head to clear the swarming memory. “Point is, 'goblin' here might not mean 'goblin' elsewhere, but I've killed things that have that name.”

Geegee cringes. “Yeesh. And here I thought our tribal cousins were bad. That just sounds outright scary.”

You shrug. “You get used to it. Mostly.” Oh, wow, super amateur alert. “Hey, Geegee. Check that out.” You point to one particular guy who just showed up, with a long practice halberd, waving it around. “See that guy? Bet you a gold piece he drops that halberd, by accident, with NO outside interference in the next four minutes.” She looks towards where you're pointing.

“That guy? Doesn't look THAT bad...” She looks at you, then him, then you again. Finally, she smirks and shrugs. “I feel like I'm gettin' played, but you're on!”

As you both watch him intently as he stabs and swipes the air as if he knows what he's doing, you pipe up again. “So, question. Do you know about the Knights of the New Moon?”

“Heard of 'em. Why?” She doesn't take her eyes off the man.

“Just wondering what you thought of them.” you say. Damnit, he almost dropped it. That wiggle gave you hope.

She shrugs. “Eh, can't say much, honestly. I just pay attention to the important bits on the war front. Apparently they've tried to interfere in some battles and have done some raids here n' there. Somethin' about bein' a third option to either Alban or Horinth, I think. I got nothin' else about 'em, though.” Suddenly she jumps. “That wasn't a drop! That was a chop!”

cont.
>>
>>560921
“That was a chop,” you agree. His hand hadn't let go and he looked relatively in control. Still didn't mean he wouldn't drop it. “Would you sell to them?”

She waves her head side to side a bit in contemplation. “Eehhh.... Probably. As long as their coin's good.” She pauses. “I mean, I'm not some ultra-greedy bint, but I don't really got a horse in this race. Or a soldier in this war, I guess. I honestly never really got ta know anyone else out in Blake's Landing all that well, cept Zeezee. Everything's too big, everyone's too fast, it's nuts. I can keep up, sure, I can find ways to make myself taller...but Zeezee...Zarach... was the only one willing to crouch, willin' to slow down so I could match his pace.” She's still staring at the man intently. “I'll stay anywhere he is for that. That's why I wanna get back, get him out, and maybe get out to the frontier. It'll be rougher goin' for a while, but maybe I won't haveta worry about keepin' up with everyone but him for a bit.”

“Hm. That makes sense, I guess.” You're slightly surprised he hasn't dropped it yet. “So, are you as good at potion making as he is? I was hoping you might be able to make me some vanishing potions.”

“Oh, oh geez, ahaha, sorry, but, uh...I ain't that great at potion craftin'.” She blushes a bit and her eyes flick towards you briefly. “I'm honestly more of a sales goblin than an alchemy goblin. I bring the customers in, Zeezee's the one that actually makes the stuff. He taught me a few tricks, and I can probably make a couple basic potions- Like minor health, poison resistance, invis- wait a tic.” She suddenly starts muttering to herself, going a mile a minute. Eventually, she stops. “Actually! I think I can! I dunno if it'll be as lastin' as Zeezee's, and I'm no pro, so it'll take some time, but I'm pretty sure I know the basic formula.”

cont.
>>
>>560934
“Well, if you can make me and yourself a few, that might be a good idea.” you suggest.

She gives you an odd look. “I hope that's just a professional suggestion and not a warnin-”

A sudden swear, and the halberd flies out of the man's hands. About a few seconds too late. Damnit.

You fork over the one coin to Geegee's not-so-secret glee. “Well, lookie that! Think I'll keep this one on the mantle.”

“Ha ha.” Before you can retort, you see a trio of Albanian soldiers walk in, and take up training arms. One of them points towards you- and Soon all the rest are looking “Ah, hail! We saw you on the battlefield the other day. Come to see what the fighting men and women of Alban can do?”

You shrug, and he continues. “Well, you're quite skilled, we noticed, but a couple of us had been wondering what it'd be like to face you in combat, since the tournament may not allow us the chance! I can assure you, we're no mere bandit fodder!” Ngh.

Eh, these guys seem like regular professionals.
I'm always willing to give fellow professionals a little more consideration.
Maybe a few practice rounds so that we can get some actual weapons practice in, since we're not a specialist like Izumi.

Also, it'll give Adel a false sense of our abilities and skill if he thinks we're a swordswoman, and we can crush him when we actually fight with just our fists and magic in the duel.

While making some side money sounds nice, and it would help us by funding our petty cash account, I think we should keep in mind that this is the kind of thing that keeps Lorelei from being a good earner for SES.

Also, I don't think we'll get many takers after we crush Adel.

What happens to all the loot we bring back to the Traverse with us? Are we going to keep our sweet flaming sword, or is it going to transform like our other gear did?
>>
>>561011
Aha, fantastic question. And the answer to that is:

It's yours. Stuff made and/or exposed for a long time to The Intersection's energies (Like your jacket) phases into you, but, say, if you bring the flaming sword out, then go on another mission elsewhere that can theoretically HAVE a flaming sword, you'll still be carrying the flaming sword. The sword MAY not work quite the same depending on the rules of wherever you carry it into, though.

If that wasn't how it worked before, it's how it works now.

What's the most technologically advanced timeline that Miranda has worked in?
The most magically advanced?

Does she have any aptitude with guns, wands, staves, tanks, planes, or cars?
>>
>>561023
Technologically advanced: A soft sci-fi world where she was tasked with hunting down space pirates that escaped a prison moon, then took a carrier hostage, and she was officially considered a 'deniable asset'. The mission took approximately 72 hours from official mission start to end, but was completed flawlessly. She utilized several high-tech weapons alongside her own magical capability. There were a total of 70 escaped pirates. There were 15 survivors retaken into custody.

Magically Advanced: An early mission saw Miranda tasked with hunting down a legendary beast for an eccentric rich fellow. This world had strong magics, with common skills being speeding up and slowing down personal time, revival of the dead, mind-reading, and city-destroying summons. At the time, Miranda's skill was...middling, in comparison to now. Due to unexpected interference by a powerful organization, she ambushed, assaulted, and was put to the brink of death, ultimately forced to emergency call Sal and request a bail out. It stands as one of her few failed missions.

She's decent with modern firearms, though she's not really a fan of them, she knows how to reload and can do basic maintenance on pistols and assault rifles. Sniper rifles aren't her speed.

She thinks wands are just ridiculous looking, but she's experimented with one or two.

Staves are better, but she prefers to not use them for personal reasons.

She has, to date, never driven a tank. She'd ridden in one exactly once.

Planes she has some familiarity with, enough to take off, fly, and even do some acrobatics, but she wouldn't last long in a dogfight.

She's very familiar with cars, and using them as an emergency transport or to mask a getaway (who'd expect a magical girl to be driving a car?) is not unfamiliar to her.
>>
>>561052
So she knows how to use a computer. Has she picked up some basic electronics, since she's had to go to sci-fi worlds sometimes?

Does she have any experience with explosives or demolitions training?

Being 91 years old, I'd have expected her to have picked up how to calculate an FTL jump, duel-wield wands while casting a hail of energy bolts, and various first aid and trauma skills/spells.

Does Sal sell us as some kind of super-soldier/one-woman-A-Team?
>>
>>560941
Support
>>
>>561067
She's actually rather skilled with electronics, yes. A computer is no big deal for her, and she can get around more future worlds easily. She can pilot a spaceship better than a modern plane, honestly.

Aye, she's got respectable demolitions training, and is used to explosives. She's handled grenades, C4, tripwire explosives, and rocket launchers, among other high energy weapons.

She COULD use wands, she just dislikes them (prejudice), really, and has found little need to learn as of yet.

She knows a few healing / status spells as of now (I'm in fact working on a spell list to show you guys) but they take time, and she learned them AFTER this event. The aforementioned assault was more like Zack Fair's Last Stand in nature than anything else. It was very quick, involved a lot of explosive attacks, and utterly blindsided Miranda since she was too green to expect anything but a wild monster hunt.

Sal tends to market you as a 'problem-solver' more than anything else, though lately he says he's been 'modifying his sales pitch a bit'.
>>
>>561052
>then took a carrier hostage
by carrier, do you mean civilian passenger transport, or legit, full-on military, strike-craft carrying carriers(regardless of it's size)?

>okay with modern firearms
>some other weapon experience
>experience with most types of vehicles
I forsee this being incredibly useful.
>>
>>561081
Large civilian transport, sorry. I couldn't think of the proper term. She has carried out assaults on military carriers, but that was a different mission, less technologically advanced, and she was backed up by a government sanctioned team.
>>
>>561088
I'm surprised that after that near-death experience, Miranda hasn't collected a small armory of technological weapons and gear, usually late-20th/early-21st century stuff that will work regardless of world.

Night-vision/thermal goggles, some grenades and flashbangs, a holdout pistol, and a PDA with solar charger (just to take notes and such).
>>
>>561088
when I first read that post, I was wondering what the fuck was the deal with those pirates, considering that they stormed a carrier and came on top against well armed ratings that probably outnumbered them to 10:1.

What things? In-universe or in the Intersection?

In-universe, they won't 'expire', but you won't be able to use them as is- they'll merge with your person- think of it as going from a weapon outright to a stat boost.

I wouldn't worry about it for the purposes of this quest, though. Unless it goes on for a while and/or we timeskip a couple years.

Timeskipping in this plane, or in general?

In the quest.

Are there no rules against telling inhabitants of other planes about The Intersection or the existence of other planes? Usually these kind of things have taboos much like time travel has with the grandfather effect?

Miranda has been very loose lipped about it, is it because no one's going to find out since this is a medieval fantasy plane or she just no longer feels like keeping it a secret?

A bit of column A, a bit of column B. Part of it's the fact that most anyone who would talk about would be perceived as crazy, part of it is the fact that the way The Intersection works, even if people could traverse planes, the chances of them intentionally finding it are beyond infinitesimal, and part of is Miranda really just doesn't care that much unless she believes it might affect her mission. That said, I didn't think she'd said anything beyond 'I'm not from this plane of existence'? I don't recall her specifically mentioning The Intersection or its properties, and if she did, that's an error on my part/ it slipped my mind.

She hasnt.

No, she's just said as an off handed remark like she's not even giving it any thought. I was curious where that attitude came from.

Iiiii don't think I'll be able to run today, I'll be doing a lot of manual labor for the rest of the day soon.
>>
>>561565
How do people usually end up there? Incredible luck to not die outright after a dimensional accident?

I assume we'll be getting backstory sooner or later, so I won't ask how Miranda ended up there.

Something like that. The exact details are spoiler territory.

Since no one else was doing it, I put the thread on sup/tg/.
