Hello, and welcome to Imperial Knight Quest. A few months ago I wrapped up a long story that I was writing on /tg/ and was asked to consider making a quest and have finally got around to doing so. This quest takes place a few years after my last story concludes so you may want to read it. (First thread: http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/archive/27693404/ Other threads: http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/archive.html?tags=Knight%20of%20the%20Realm ) So without further ado, welcome to Imperial Knight Quest.

About two years ago, you distinguished yourself in the service of your King and the Imperial Realm. As a result you were awarded a rare honor, the opportunity to become a Knight of the Imperial Realm. Located in the North of the Realm, the Royal Academy of the Knights of the Realm is housed in a large keep, surrounded by strong walls. To the North and West of the keep streaches the town that supports the academy and its students. To the South lie the training grounds, including a small mock city for practice. In the East the Verun river flows south to the sea.

After extensive training and testing you have finally come to the conclusion of your long journey. Take a moment to reflect on how you came to be here. Who are you? What part of the vast Imperial Realm did you come from?
>Decisions will be made by general aclaim or by vote in case of a near tie.
>>

OP, I'd rather you make those choices yknow.
>>

So let’s start with race. What are you and where did you come from?
>Human – No real advantages or disadvantages but notably are the tallest race in the land. The majority of the Imperial Realm’s population is humans and they tend to be able to adapt to any environment or region with ease. Humans tend to come from two regions of the Imperial Realm, the Realm itself or Omrachena Zemli to the Northeast, however they can come from any region, including the Kingdom of Pommes to the South.
>Elf – Graceful and elegant, but often on the frail end, elves stand a full head shorter than humans but often can live about twice as long. Representing a minority in the Realms, they never the less are considered to have substantial political sway amongst the nobility due to the large number of elven family members in the Imperial Royal Family. The extent to which this is true however may vary. Elves tend to come from Albero Città or its surrounding environs, however on rare occasion may originate elsewhere.

>Dwarf – Stout and powerful, but usually lack some degree of finesse, dwarves are a head shorter than even the elves but share similar longevity, living about one and a half times a human lifespan. While the decision of the Dwarven Clans to maintain a degree of autonomy from the rest of the Imperial Realm has hurt their standing amongst the nobility, the talent and skill of their craftsmen have won them friends throughout the land, particularly amongst the merchants who trade their goods. Most Dwarves come from Hammerburg, the largest dwarven city state in the Realm, although other holds are certainly present.

>Other – These three are not the only races to live in the Imperial Realm. There is plenty of variety to choose from, although without being a major population, they may not be looked on fondly by those unfamiliar with them.

>>Ogre -- "The ordinary ogre is the creature for whom the phrase 'As dumb as a bag of rock hammers' was coined. In his natural state, an ogre is supremely incapable of doing or deciding anything. Clothed in dirt, he sometimes finds himself accidentally draped in animal skins after eating carrion. Not an especially social creature, he is most often found affectionately consorting with the boulders or tree-stumps he has mistaken for kin (a factor that may explain the ogre's low rate of reproduction)."

Now what did you do to get here? You must have done something quite special to have earned your place here.

>Warrior (Soldier) – Fighting in one of the many small wars against the barbarians and orc tribes to the North, you distinguished yourself in combat in a fierce battle against an orc and barbarian alliance. After the battle you won many accolades and after the celebrations were through, your commander took you aside to talk to you. A Knight of the Realm had seen you in combat, he said, and nominated you for candidacy in the Academy. You took your chance and set out to become a Knight.

>Warrior (Guard) – Fighting against bandits within the Realm, you have distinguished yourself by saving the innocent. One day when traveling down your route, you came across a bandit raid on a caravan of travelers. You immediately joined the fray and managed to drive off the raiders. After escorting the caravan to its destination, you were approached by one of the traveler’s husband. He was a Knight of the Realm and as thanks for your valor offered you a chance to become a Knight yourself.

>Specialist (Legitimate) – You don’t have money, but what you do have are a very particular set of skills, skills that make you a nightmare or a dream come true for other people. You are a talented expert in the service of your government, whether you pick locks, study obscure lore, solve crimes, or craft useful tools like alchemical potions. One day after a particularly difficult case, you found yourself approached by your superior, a retired Knight of the Realm. He offered you a chance to serve your King further by becoming a Knight. You took the opportunity and made your way here.

>Specialist (Crime) – You are an… unusual case for the academy. Orphaned at a young age you were taken in by a seedy old man who trained you and other orphans to pick pockets for him. One day you picked the wrong target and found yourself a target of a Knight of the Realm. After apprehending you, the knight questioned you and after learning about the pickpocket ring set out to dismantle it and saw you into a safer home. Since then you may have fallen in and out with the law a few times but you set your mind on becoming a Knight yourself and you finally got your chance.

>Mage – A specialist in the arcane arts. Mages come to the Imperial Knighthood for many reasons. For most, this is an opportunity to serve their land and they take up the challenge greatly. Others see the Knighthood as a way to gather power, as their libraries store records the most powerful spells cast in the Realm’s history. You graduated the mage’s academy already, with honors too, and had the world open to you. The Imperial Knight Academy took you in without hesitation.

>Other – There are many other careers that are possible in the Imperial Knighthood. Perhaps you have one of them in mind?

MAGE-KNIGHT A GO!

FYI, Knight is a title and a position. Not necessarily a set of proficiency. You would be a wizard, with a Knighthood and a job, not a Gish.

Longswords have it.

Now what type of magic do you want to use? Pick carefully, you don't get as many choices as a regular mage.

>>492598
No. If you picked a spear or halbeard it would be a problem, but longsword is fine.
>>
>>492606
You get one specialization and one other field that you can use as well. Attempting to use magic outside of those fields will be difficult, possibly impossible depending on what you're trying to do. Forgot to specify.
>>
>>492606
>Now what type of magic do you want to use?
Elemental
Illusions
and if possible, Telekinesis.
Blood magic would be cool, but I don't know if it's in the setting. Will read the other threads after this one is concluded.

Sure
>>
>>492613
>>492616
As for a second field healing would be rather useful too. Using our metal manipulation to win duels(fight in general) more easily and our healing to get rid of fatigue and any damage we take.
>>
Why not sound for echolocation, paralyzing enemies, muffling, deafening
>>
>>492623
This would probably be rounded, so yes.
>>
>>492606
Looks like you want evocation for your first school with telekinesis as a second choice? Any objections? I did hear two for manipulating metal.
>>
>>492648
>evocation
What? No, we meant controlling the elements - Fire, Wind, Water, Earth etc.
At least that's what I think when someone says "Elemental magic"
>>
>>492648
I think they meant like the elements of Fire,Frost,Earth like spells. But summoning elementals sounds fun too.

So elementalism then? They are different schools FYI, one can generate energy and hurl it at others. The other can manipulate elements that are already present. Which were you looking for?

>Probably should have just posted a list. Give me a second to get one together.
>>
>>492648
Actually Telekinesis/Metal Manipulation seems more interesting
>>
>>492686
I'm for that combo
>>
>>492693
Count me in for this also
>>
Guys... how about we go full telekinesis? Multi-classing always has downsides, let's just leave that for later.
>>
>>492686
I can get behind this. As long as I get muh Telekinesis I'm happy desu.
>>
>>492686
Metal Manipulation is more subtle and it fits into our fighting style a bit more. I imagined using metal manipulation to make weak spot in the enemy armor and then attacking there with our Longsword. I am all for this idea.
>>492697
It seems like it doesn't and besides OP said that there is a main dield and a secondary one, i don't see any bad sides to making a combo of two fields as long as they can fit together in some way.

Magic Schools:
>Evocation - Creating Energy and using it to blast things. Can pick a specialized form of energy. Advanced users can basically lay cities to waste.
>Elementalism - Manipulation of preexisting elements. Advanced users can summon elementals.
>Healing/Restoration – Be your own healer! Can heal mortal wounds, but no raise dead. Higher ability users can make people unkillable for short periods of time.
>Transmutation – The manipulation of objects natural forms. The more you change them, the harder the spell is. High ability users can teleport.
>Telekinesis/Manipulation – Use energy to move objects.
>Necromancy – The dead and the souls of the dead. High level users can become immortal. Typically considered immoral at best and usually illegal.
>Enchantment – Manipulating other’s wills. Usually illegal as well.

Vote for two. Most popular is specialization. Second is general.

This is the morning of what could be your final day at the Imperial Academy. Instructor Rhys has called you and your fellow senior candidates together, “Good morning candidates. You all have come far to get to today. By this evening we will know whether or not you will be a Knight of the Imperial Realm. Some of you,” and with that he looks at you with an approving smile, “have done well throughout your training and should be relatively safe. Others of you,” he continued with a glare at a young woman you don’t know that well, “need to do well on this test. For your final test you are going to be given a mission. There is no set scoring rubric, we will be evaluating you based on your own initiative and abilities. Your ability to work with a team will be just as valued as your ability to work autonomously. Both results and efforts will be taken into account too. In a moment I am going to hand you a parchment that should detail your mission. Not all of you will be given the same mission, so don’t think you can just follow the others around and leach off their efforts.”

The pamphlet you are handed is a wanted poster bearing the image of Instructor Farum, here identified as one “Davian Ironfang” and promising an unspecified reward for his live capture. In the illustration, it shows Instructor Farum with a garish fake tattoo of a wolf head on his face. The pamphlet goes on to note that “Davian Ironfang” is a wanted bandit leader, is considered armed and dangerous, and is likely accompanied by other members of his gang.

Instructor Rhys nods to you all and shouts, “Go grab your training gear from the armory and get going! Head to the training ground when you’re ready.”

>What equipment do you grab?

>>493012

>Our Longsword

You grab your gear, and set out. You have a training sword today, to make sure no one gets hurt in an accident, but you can use it fine. You debate a shield, as you can't cast spells with your hands full, but decide its better to have it and not need it than the other way around. The training town unfortunately doesn't have a set map, the town's features being moved around to simulate new environments, but you grab a regional map just in case. In a similar spirit of preparations, you grab a torch, rope, and utility knife, no telling how long this test will take.

“Training Town” as it is popularly known is a small artificial town near the keep. None of the towns features are real, for instance the well is really just a pit about 2 feet deep with a small wall around it, but it works for training.

From the town gates, you can see the main street, with all its stores. The buildings are simple ones built mostly of wood. Of note however are the signs, they have all been replaced with Orcish glyphs as part of an effort to impede navigation.

When you reach the entrance mock town of the training area, you can see some of the other candidates peel off as individuals or in small groups, soon you and a few other candidates are all that are left at the town entrance.

What do you do?

She looks at you a bit suprised before you continue, "Are you also hunting for Instructor Far - I mean Davian Ironfang?"

She nods, "I am, I was actually just wondering where to start. I was thinking about asking around to see if anyone saw him."

You clear your throat before continuing,

The elf I don't know a lot about. She's definitely eager to become a knight. I don't know if you heard about what happened in Albero Città a few years back before the Imperial Realm formed, but evidently the King wound up saving the city. She's been looking to join the Knights ever since.

The dwarf is evidently a professor of some kind, not here at the academy though. He's definitely smart but not very adept physically. I don't know why he wants to become a knight."

As you part company with the mage, the elf walks over to you. “I can see your forming a small team. By any chance are you looking to hunt down the brigante Ironfang?”

“The brigante… oh. Yes actually I am. Would you like to accompany us? We could use another soldier.”

“Very well then,” in a lower voice she continues, “I see you have that mage with you. It does trouble me to see him here. He’s clearly not here for the right reasons. He’s selfish and egotistical. Do we have to have him along?”

The elf guardswoman looks disappointed, but nods. “I think I’ll keep an eye on him just in case.”

“Probably a good idea.”

The final member here is the dwarven professor. You see him intently examining some graffiti written on the walls. “Excuse me… sir?”

The dwarf turns to you, “Yes can I help you? Archibald Baker wasn’t it? From what I heard it’s likely to be Sir Baker soon enough, correct?”

“Yes actually. I don’t think I got your name…”

“Ah yes. I am Professor Manfred Vocks-Ziegler, at your service.”

“A pleasure to meet you Professor. Would you be interested in helping me track down Mr. Ironfang?”

“I’d love to, but I can’t . Unfortunately I have my own mission, tracking down a stolen warhammer.” He shows you his parchment displaying a image of an ancient warhammer covered in runes. “If I do find it I’d be happy to help you but unfortunately I’ll be busy until then. You might want to know however, that this graffiti is quite helpful, if you can read it. For instance, this bit right here proclaims that ‘Ironfang rules the north side!’ You might want to begin your investigations there.”

As Professor Vocks-Ziegler walks off you return to your little group to share the news. Everyone has their own ideas for how to handle it.

“We should go to a tavern.” Isabella insists, “we can ask there if anyone’s seen Ironfang. Everyone makes their way through taverns eventually.”

“Bah! Useless waste of time.” Ivan snorts, “My scouts have already detected that there are several people in this town with tattoos similar to the one on our instructor’s face. We should find them and make them tell us his location!”

“We can also ask some of the locals what they know.” The elf, who introduces herself finally as Valeria, notes. “Locals typically don’t want criminals around them and can often be of use when tracking down a criminal.”

>We’ll go with Isabelle’s plan and check out a tavern

After binding up your prisoner, you meet back up with Isabelle and Valeria. “Good news. We found where he is. Problem is that we don’t know a lot about it. Evidently he’s somewhere on the Stryd Coch. Not sure where that exactly is though.”

Isabelle smiled, “Well we have a bit of information that can help with that. I don’t know where the Stryd Coch is, but we were able to find out that he was evidently hiding in an armory somewhere while some equipment got repaired. Its name was Callahan’s and it evidently has a reputation for dealing with unsavory characters.”

“Unsavory characters like weapon thieves?”

Best to go for Iron Fag before he leaves or someone else get him. Finding the dwarf will take too long, and it's best to go for now. If he looking for clues he would make to the same place were going.

Valeria muses to herself. “Hmm… Stryd Coch. Where have I heard that before? I think it’s one of the more archaic languages used in the Realm. Stryd means street I think… So it’s a street name?”

You look at the street signs, all orcish. “I can recognize a few characters here and there. Does anyone else know how to read Orc?”

Everyone looks around and shakes their heads.

“Perfect. Alright let me see what I can do.”
