PREVIOUSLY: http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/archive.html?searchall=Starship+Idols

The maglev train ride to Camp Sugar Watkins is rather uneventful. After waking up with quite possibly the worst hangover of your life and having to do your own uniform checks and your own grooming, you had to catch a flight out of Aberdeen to the former South American territories to the Atacama Desert. The Atacama was selected as a training ground for several reasons. One, it’s drier than a nun’s panties over there. Two, it’s surrounded by either the coast or the Mountains so deserters don’t have much chance anyway of leaving. And three, the rough terrain makes it good ground to get ones legs used to moving in a suit.

Though, you didn’t train at Watkins, you hear it’s quite the experience. Certainly different from Arthur Currie if you hear the rumors correctly. And if Dune is training there, then you might as well just slit your wrists and be done with it.

Still, you lay back in your train seat, watching the news, making the time go by. Your own little booth in the car was empty save for you. Cyrano was back at home being taken care of by the cleaning robot (those robots are smarter than people give them credit for) and while you would’ve liked to take him with you, he wasn’t exactly K-9 Corps material.

Still, on the news today was the Prime Minister’s address to the Federation regarding last week’s disaster at Hesperus. “My fellow Citizens and Civilians. It is no secret that last week, the Citizens’ Systems Federation suffered a defeat at the hands of the Pseudo-Arachnids at the planet of Hesperus. Over three-thousand MI personnel were killed, and seven Fleet ships were lost, including the command ship of Admiral Dain Welker who is currently still missing at this time. The Federation Forces have retreated from Hesperus and are now regrouping at Fleet Battlestation Ticonderoga.

“I must remind you all that we are in the midst of a war. We are bound to suffer defeat every once in a while. We cannot live our lives knowing the Federation is invincible. And you must understand that if we are to win this war, then you must take the personal responsibility for those lives that were lost. For if you sit there and think that you need not take the Federal Service just because others do it for you, then perhaps you should reconsider your place in this Federation. We are at war. And the only way we will win this war is together, if we all know our place. So take heart, where there is defeat I am certain we can make victory. We are stronger together, my fellow humans. Stand together, God bless the Federation.”

And yet despite that speech, recruitment figures barely creeped up 1%, and that’s in the Home systems. The Outer Colonies barely do anything except complain and complain about how they aren’t being properly represented. Maybe they’d be properly represented if any of them actually enlisted.

But alas, it’s still a bit of time before you reach Sugar Watkins. Maybe a nap is-

You blink, looking over at the booth next to you. Sitting there is a prospective Sergeant, smiling at you. His hair has been buzzed short, and his face doesn’t have a single scar. Must be new. “You’re that Lieutenant aren’t you?” he says. He points to the Terran Cross hanging around your neck. You did decide to put on your dress greens but…

“Yes, I’m the cute one,” you declare. You give a quick V-for-Victory with your fingers, winking at him. The Sergeant chortles, slapping his knee, obviously very much in awe of you. “You agree with that, right?”

He nods, smiling. “Of course!”

“Good, good.” You sigh, folding your arms. He stands up, then gently walks across the hall and sits across from you. “What’s your name?”

“Sergeant Shames.” He gives you a quick salute. “Newly minted, no unit just yet.”

“Really?” You tilt your head. “What are you doing coming back to Watkins then?”

“Transfer,” he says. “I’m gonna be deploying with the first unit that graduates from Watkins.” Ah, you see. “You know, I read your Terran Cross citation. The Senior Drill Instructor at Currie specifically mentioned you as an example to follow.” Oohhh… you wouldn’t exactly do that. “I mean, your actions were phenomenal, what was it like in that moment?”

“It was uh…” You shrug. Right, cutesy time is over. “It was- I mean, we have jobs to do. I was just doing my job.”

“If you were just doing your job, you would’ve turned tail and ran with the rest of your unit,” he says. “But instead, you found a Bug Queen with your small squad psychically interrogating two MI troopers!” Right, right. “And you forced it out of hiding, right into the hands of another MI Unit that captured it. All with only one casualty in the squad!”

You bite your lip, slowly nodding. “Riiight…”

He smiles. “I know you’ve done so many interviews and all about it, but- but what did it feel like? Nobody just goes into a Hive and comes out with two rescued troopers and a Queen!”

You shrug. “It was okay.”

He squints at you in surprise, then leans back in his seat. He’s baffled. “Just okay?”

You nod. “Yeah, it was okay.”

“Y-… you do one of the most important things of the war, you do it with minimal casualties, you’re- you’re a hero!” He blinks, his smile and enthusiasm apparently being replaced by sheer utter confusion. “How is it just okay to you?”

“It just is,” you say firmly. “It’s a job, no more, no less.”

He opens his mouth to try and say more, but stops himself. Apparently disappointed he nods. And with that, he stands up and goes back to sit in his own booth again.

Well, that’s one way to lose a fan you suppose.

“Lieutenant!” Corporal Mills meets you at the station. The station leading directly into Camp Sugar Watkins was a small structure, overhanging the two tracks in and out of the Atacama. And there, Corporal Mills was in his utility suit, taking your luggage away from you and carrying it himself. “Glad you could arrive, ma’am!”

“How are the girls?” you ask.

“Just peachy,” he says proudly. “First night wasn’t so bad, apart from Rosalie collapsing from exhaustion, Olga tripping and almost being trampled by the rest of the unit, and Stacy having her hand pinned to a wall by a knife.” Ah, standard stuff. “But otherwise things are good. Mister Azuma and his sister Saki have taken quarters and are busy planning things out for the first concert, Mister Danner briefed them last night.”

“Thanks,” you say. Sergeant Shames comes walking down with you. “Come to say goodbye?”

He nods, offering his hand. “Good luck to you, Lieutenant.”

“You too.” You shake his hand as well. And with that, Shames continues on.

Towards a very familiar, absolute giant of a crusty old man. Sergeant Shames blinks, knowing exactly who he is. He nods to him, grinning happily. “Good afternoon, Career Sergeant Dune!” says Shames.

All Dune gives him is a brush by and the words, “Fuck you know what kind of goddamn day it is you little bawbag.” Shames stands there, mouth agape, unable to process a response. Dune continues walking towards you. Oh shit oh shit, he’s coming closer to you. He’s actually coming to greet you. He stops just in front of you, surprising you and Mills.

Then he salutes. “Lieutenant.”

You salute back, and give him a nod to let him ease up. He places his hands behind his back, standing firmly. “Dune.”

He looks at you up and down, sneering at you from behind his wrinkles and scarred face. “… fuck me, you’ve gotten pudgy, Lieutenant.”

“It’s called being out of the service for a year and a half,” you explain. “But it’s nice to see that you care about my appearance, Sergeant. Unlike your uh…” Sergeant Dune stood at a very tall 6’5, almost tall enough to require a specially made suit for him to fit in. His skin and face were covered in wrinkles and scars from battle, with one of his eyes nearly blind from a lucky shot from a very squirrely Arachnid. “… uniqueness.”

Still, even with all that, of course you’d expect him to look like that. This is the man who’s served almost 25 years nonstop, survived a couple hundred combat drops, and has earned almost every medal the Federation has to offer (such as the POW Ribbon, for obvious reasons.)

“Thank you, Lieutenant,” he says. Without a hint of amusement or anything else for that matter, he explains to you. “The girls the Sky Marshal sent are under forced rest right now for today’s activities just to let you know. Would you like to see them?” Ah yes, forced rest. Always fun.

> “Sure, let’s go see how they’re doing.”

“Sure, Sergeant.” You turn to Mills. “Get that stuff to my room?” He nods, smiling at you. “Thank you, Mills.”

“Pleasure, Lieutenant.”

With that, you start walking along with Sergeant Dune out of the station and into Camp Sugar Watkins. It was a large camp, made to support 5,000 recruits, another 500 support personnel, and be large enough to hold various exercises such as drills and marching within its walls. Now though, at maximum you could expect a camp like Watkins to hold only about 500 before the training the starts. Recruiting isn’t what it used to be. “So, Sergeant Dune. How are you taking being off the frontline?”

“It’s alright,” he says. “One of the few good things I think the Sky Marshal has done since being pussywhipped by Thach. Recruits need guys like me giving them the experience during the war. So, if it means a couple months off the line to buy some kids a couple years, so be it.” Underneath that hardass façade was another much smarter hardass façade. It was actually quite interesting, he’s like a big onion. “Of course, most of these recruits couldn’t tie their own shoes to save their fucking life. Those that do get fucking rocked during the suit phase.”

You nod. “And the girls?”

“One week isn’t enough,” he says simply. Fair. “But I’m doing what I can with them.”

Past the deserted prefab offices and buildings, you come up to a large parade ground where sure enough, underneath the hot sun and on flat black tarmac is a column of about fifty recruits. They wear the old style kevlars and carry the older rifles as well. You haven’t held one of those in a while, jeez. But their heads were hung low and their arms around their legs as they sat and slept. “Forced rest?”

He nodded. “Gave them the hypno when they arrived. Base Commander assigned them to Domino Squadron.” He points down the end of the line, where your three girls were sleeping along with a trio of boys about two or three years their senior. “I can see why, Domino’s racked up their last chance. They don’t pass this week, they’ll be moved to another branch, one that’ll take rejects.”

“Oh, Domino’s the washer?” you ask. Dune nods. That’s a shame.

Actually, why would the Base Commander put your Idols in a washout squad? Hm, you’ll have to investigate later.

Dune steps forward, then yells out, “Alright, you little shites, wake up!” He snaps his finger. All fifty recruits raise their heads, blinking and groaning in pain. They’ve been burnt out in the sun, dried up like raisins. “Get some water in your system then we’re gonna make the march out to the simulation grounds! Five minutes!” All the recruits hurriedly start uncapping their canteens and start drinking.

Rosalie and Olga however see you, then immediately wave hello at you. Stacy simply gives you a very cold glare in response.

You point to them, yelling, “Hey, don’t wave! Drink!” Rosalie and Olga immediately uncap their canteens and starts splashing their mouths with water. Stacy reluctantly does so as well, swigging as much water as she can before the march.

Dune walks up to the lot, squinting hard at each and every one of them. “All of you are well aware that I don’t give a flying fuck if you wash out or die or not! That just means you’re not gonna be a citizen, no skin off my back! But for those who don’t, I am going to motivate you, and train you into the best damn troopers this Federation has seen! Domino Squadron, forward!” Rosalie, Olga, Stacy, and the three other troops step up, then stand at attention. “Domino, you are nothing but a whole load of washouts waiting to happen! You better washout, because if you make past this week, and I don’t think you’re ready, then by God I’m putting you where your body is gonna be of some use and you are NOT GOING TO LIKE IT! AM I CLEAR!?”

“Yes, Career Sergeant!” they all yell.

“Fall back into line now!” They immediately step back into line, fumbling around with each for a bit before stepping into formation. “Lousy! Right, today starts Sim Week! You will be going to the Simulation Grounds, you will fight Arachnids on those grounds both simulated and caged up and real! Everything you have learned will come down to this week! If you fail, you will get another try! Fail again, one LAST try! You fail that time, you are being moved to another point in Federal Service where your manky ass scrawny hide can be useful and won’t hurt anybody! CLEAR!?”

“Yes, Career Sergeant!”

“Alpha Squadron! Lead us out!” The Alpha Squadron squad leader steps forward, turns about, then yells the formation command. The formation starts jogging to the simulation grounds, with Dune in tow. “Get going you little fucks! O’Conner, straighten out now!”

You fold your arms. It’s suddenly striking you now that they could probably be killed.

Hm.

“This is the Course!” yells Dune. You and a few other training personnel were watching Dune and his recruits from the relative safety of a Viking dropship flying over the field. Everyone was kitted out in their gear, wielding the old fashioned ballistic weaponry, ready to go.

The Course itself was deceptively simple. It was the size of a football field, but instead of goals on either side you had one big tower to ascend. Before that though, there was rocky terrain and concrete pillboxes, all guarded by simulated Arachnids wandering around (and real ones caged up in strategic locations). What made it deceptive was the fact that while covering a football field’s distance isn’t too bad, it’s having to do it under fire and under a time limit that is.

And worse, this was the course scaled down for dismounted troopers. The suited troopers got the course that was a kilometer long. “The weaponry being fired at you will be simulation rounds, except for 1 in every 500! That 1 in every 500 is a real bullet! And it will kill you if you don’t keep your head down! Every minute past your time limit of five minutes, that number will decrease! First minute will be 1 in every 250, then 125, 60, then 30, then 15, and so on!” he declares. All the recruits look very nervous at that.

Nobody wants to get shot on their last week.

“To pass this course, you will need to do it under the allotted time of five minutes! If your squad is annihilated, you have failed! If you take longer than ten minutes, you have failed! If you perform an infraction or have cheated, you have failed! You will have three days to do the Dismounted Course, then three days to do the Suited Course! Got that, cappies!?”

“Yes, Career Sergeant!”

“Domino Squadron, you’re first!” Rosalie, Olga, and Stacy all look at each other nervously, with their fellow squadmembers as well looking quite nervous too. “Assign your roles and pick up your weapons at the table!” They fall out of formation, quickly taking their weapons.

One of the training personnel gives you a PDA to track them.

> SHOCKTROOPER STACY ELSON
> SHOCKTROOPER MARCO LINDSTROM
> TANKER OLGA SCHWARBER
> TANKER JOEY MARCONI
> SCOUT ROSALIE O’CONNOR
> SCOUT DILL BRECKENRIDGE

“How are the others?” you ask.

“Not great,” he responds. Well, at least he’s honest. “Dune has already given you his permission to allow you to advise them, but right now the first test is to see how they do when given independent command. It’s best if you allow them to solve things out first.” Eh, that’s fair. You remember the Sim Week yourself, wasn’t great, very few ever passed the test first time out.

Right, here’s the thing…

> OBJECTIVE: Seize the Flag at the top of the Citadel

> DOMINO SQUADRON IS AT CODE BLUE

> Note: Brown areas indicate medium cover, good enough to deflect most fire but not good enough for extended engagement or heavy artillery.

> Note: Red Lines indicate arcs of fire for the bunkers.

> Note: The Mobile Infantry utilizes four Tactical “Codes” to indicate their disposition in Battle
> Indigo: Stealth, no fire unless fired upon
> Blue: Normal motion, shoot anything that comes close
> Red: Aggressive motion, fire at everything at all distances
> Scarlet: SMASH THE ENTIRE AREA

> For training purposes, all troopers are outfitted with standard Morita rifles. Tankers will be allotted one Rocket launcher with one rocket each.

> Let them go, see how they perform without your guidance.

You decide to tap into their radio comms and listen in on how they do.

When the gates rise up, the six of them immediately rush into the medium cover in front of them: a small ditch barely deep enough for them to crouch comfortably in without getting shot at. “Alright, here’s what we do!” yells Olga. “Let’s try and kind of divide their fire so they’re not all firing at us at once!”

“Who fucking put you in charge!?” yells Breckenridge.

“Well no one else is telling us what to do!” screams Stacy. “And your fucking Squad Leader got the boot yesterday and no one’s replaced him yet! Let Olga decide!”

“G- Guys-“ Lindstrom’s comms are static-filled and a bit dirty, probably from the nearby bullets singing over his head. “Maybe we should try for-“

“To hell with this, Rosie!” Breckenridge pats Rosalie’s head, getting her attention. “Get up! We’re making a run on that north bunker!”

“Wait, we gotta cover you!” yells Stacy. Breckenridge and Rosalie immediately storm out. “Shite! Joey, come on!”

“Where are you all going!?” yells Olga.

Joey, Olga, Breckenridge, and Rosalie immediately divide themselves, with Joey and Olga going south and Breckenridge and Rosalie going north.

However, there’s a hitch. Breckenridge is immediately by a real round, thankfully only in the Kevlar. He falls over, wounded but not seriously so. As a result, the test continues. “Breckenridge is down!” Rosalie shouts.

“Ah, not again!” yells Joey. Joey and Olga dive into their foxhole.

Out of the North and South bunker come two pairs of Arachnid workers, skittering about with muzzles attached to their mandibles. Mindless without a central intelligence, they’re pretty much harmless. However… “Let one of those Bugs touch you, and you’re out!” yells Dune.

After a few minutes, the engagement continues, with the bugs aimlessly wandering around until… “Alright,” says Stacy. “Joey, watch my back! I’m going to make a run for that defilade in the center!”

“Hey, why not your front!? There’s plenty of that for me to watch!” He nudges Stacy on the arm, grinning. “Get it, hahaha! Cuz you got a pair of-“

“Would you fucking shut-“ Stacy grabs him, then pulls him up and over the top. “Come on!” They however did not wait for covering fire from Olga or Rosalie, and as a result are immediately gunned down by simulation rounds.

Rosalie stands up, grabbing her gun. “I’ll get you guys out-“ She’s immediately hit by a sim round, knocking her on her side. “Ah!”

The bugs start to advance on the forward trench. “AH! BUGS, BUGS!” Olga and Lindstrom immediately stand up, attempting to gun them down. Through some fluke, Olga actually does hit one in the nerve case, killing it. But the other three swarm the three and pile on top of them like dogs. “AAAH! GET THEM OFF! GET THEM OFF! AH! THEY’RE DROOLING ON ME!”

You sigh, rubbing your forehead.

The Recruits all return to a camp outside of the grounds, where they have built tents and set fires to cook their meager meals. Sergeant Dune addresses the Domino Squad. “Three minutes and twenty five seconds. Congrats, you set a new record for fastest failure of a course in the two hundred years of the Mobile Infantry,” he declares. “Next time, I expect even faster.” And with that, he turns around and walks past you.

Well, that was disappointing.

Stacy huffs, pulling her jacket off and tugging on the mudstained tank top underneath. “Nice job, Breck.”

“Hey, this is my fucking fault!?” yells Breckenridge.

“Ah, now, now, come on guys,” says Joey. He steps between a fiery giant of a farmboy and one of your potential Idols. “Nobody’s fault out there. Except maybe Stacy’s for having such a nice ass, got me distracted.” Stacy slaps him upside the head. “Ah!”

“Right, that’s enough!” They all immediately stand up straight and stiffen their postures as you approach. “All of you, stop acting like children! I know you’re all young and eager to get into the field, but the way you act is going to get you all killed. And the state that you’re in right now, I don’t think you’ll ever pass unless you make some serious adjustments.” Rosalie, Olga, and Stacy all look to you, expectantly, probably hoping you’ll put the boys in their place. “First off, you rushed that course, you do not rush the course. Your job is to pass, not to show off. You gotta be patient, and take advantage of everything that you can see, got that?”

They all nod. “Yes, ma’am!”

“Good,” you say.

“And for you boys as well,” you say. “I need my Idols trained to be troopers. I don’t need you three. What you do isn’t my problem, but try not to make girls look bad. Got that?”

Joey, Lindstrom, and Breckenridge nod. “Yes, ma’am!”

“Good.” You fold your arms, then take a whiff. Ugh, they stink. “They got any showers here?” They all nod. “Go take a shower. Dismissed.” They all grumble, turning away to walk to the showers.

“Fuck kind of pep talk was that?” Breckenridge says.

“Hey, you want pep, go watch Shannon Shujumi, Breck,” Joey responds. “’Sides, nothing wrong with being on the Idol Squad. Maybe they’ll like us enough and we’ll get usselves a cushy assignment guarding them for the rest of the war.”

“We can hear you you know,” says Stacy.

“Well, hey, if you need bodyguards!” Joey clicks his teeth, snapping his fingers at Olga and Stacy. “We’re here!”

“Yeah, that’s if we pass,” says Olga.

“Come on, we’ll, we’ll pass,” says Lindstrom. They step into the shower tent together.

You sigh, then take a whiff of yourself.

You walk into the shower tent a little ways behind them, making sure to blend into the crowd. You don’t want to engage with them just yet, considering your little speech with them just a little while ago. Instead, you take off your clothes, and head underneath a HOLY FUCK IT’S COLD WOW. You haven’t been under a freezing shower like that since Mincke’s World! You look over at the six troopers of Domino Squad, mostly buried in the corner talking amongst each other. They don’t even seem to see you, great.

“So, when can we expect your first hit single, Stacy?” asks Joey as he rubs his short curly hair back under the shower.

“How about you shut up, Joey.” Stacy huffs, scrubbing some soap onto her body. “Ever think of that?”

“Honest question,” says Breckenridge. “What’s with this whole Idol business? Is it like… a way to make money or something, like a publicity stunt?”

Olga steps in, soap in her hair and water all across her naked body. “We’re supposed to be raising money and awareness for the war effort. Apparently not enough people are joining or giving money to the war effort. That’s where we come in! We get to be famous like Shannon Shujumi!”

“So the Federation is relying on a trio of girls with only a weeks experience to fight in combat AND sing songs.” Breckenridge smirks at Joey. “And you thought I was stupid.”

“Look, Breck. Your big head is just deceptive as all, makes people think you got a big brain to go with it.” Joey laughs at his own joke. “Hahaha!”

Breckenridge snorts at him. “At least I got a big head!”

“No, at most you got a big head!”

Stacy rolls her eyes. “Why did you guys even join anyway?”

Joey shrugs. “Been in and out of Juvie, not a lot of career prospects, decided why not, you know?” He places his hands on his hips, looking over at Breckenridge. “Breckie?”

“Pay’s good,” he says. “Gonna send half of it to the family on the farm, maybe have the rest open my own little farm too next door, grow me some corn.” They both look over at a very shy Lindstrom showering by himself. “Lindy, what about you?”

Lindstrom blinks, then says, “I wanted to pay for college.”

“Fair deal,” says Olga.

Rosalie smiles. “It’ll be nice to be a citizen on top of that.”

“Citizen?” Breckenridge quirks his brow. “Er, I guess yeah, but I ain’t doing it for citizenship. Hell, I’ll take the fines and not vote. Politics ain’t really my business you know.” Your eye twitches. HE WHAT?

“Yeah,” says Joey. “Look, Rosie. I guarantee you like 90% of the people training now? They aren’t doing it to be citizens.” Rosalie frowns, apparently having her hopes crushed before her very eyes. “They’re doing it for practical purposes. Voting and franchise is more of uh… secondary benefit to them. It’s not the big thing people want when they do Federal Service these days. And with the war, of course people don’t wanna join, they don’t wanna die out there.”

Rosalie looks around. “Y- you’re joking. You’re being funny again, and it’s not funny.”

Olga shrugs. “No, he’s right, Rosalie. I mean, being a Citizen isn’t really that special,” she says. “So what, it’s just a vote.”

“It’s not just a vote!” you yell. Everyone turns over to look at you.

Oh fuck.

You sigh, rubbing your face. Joey whistles admirably, folding his arms as he looks at you. But to the lot of them you say, “It’s not just a vote. You can complain about how the Federation is set up and how privilege is select only to a certain few, but guess what. Those certain few earned that privilege. Voting isn’t a right, and it never will be if you think of it just as uh… reward. It’s not.”

All the Recruits glance at each other or hang their heads low, trying to avert their gaze. Yeah, they know what they’re thinking might be wrong. At least in the presence of someone who actually knows what they’re talking about. They can talk shit about the Federation all they want, it’s their God given right, God granted humanity a mouth so it can speak and so it can eat, but it didn’t grant the average human the knowledge of how to properly use its vote or how to elect its leaders or lead its people. That goes only to the exceptional, the ones who take the Federal Service. “I’m sorry, Lieutenant,” says Olga. “I didn’t know it was that important to you.”

“It’s not just important to me.” You walk up to the girls, then place your hands on your hips. “It should be important to you. To all of you!” All the Recruits nod, agreeing. “Rosalie has it right.” Rosalie smiles a little at your acknowledgement of her. “And as for you, Domino Squad.” Lindstrom, Breckenridge, and Joey all stand up stiff and straight. “Don’t make my girls look bad.”

“Yes, ma’am!” they all call.

With that, you sigh. Your little shower’s over. So you grab a towel then your uniform and start walking out of the tent. You do catch a few murmurs and gossip about you, some praising, some spiteful. Joey though… “Is that really your Lieutenant?” he asks.

“Yeah,” says Olga. “Why?”

“She’s pretty cute.” You hear a slap. “Ow!”

You sigh, checking your watch. It’s getting late into the evening so…

You turn around however before you leave, and see Joey nursing a slap to the back of his head. You whistle to get his attention, then give a quick wink at the boy. He grins, clicking his teeth at you and giving you a point of the finger gun. Boy knows good girls when he sees them. Hmph! Even better taste than the Prime Minister.

“Please don’t flirt with our Lieutenant,” says Olga.

“What? Age is just a number you know,” says Joey quickly. The girls all groan in disgust. “Come on! Can’t knock a guy for having a healthy desire or two!”

“We’re not knocking you for that,” says Stacy. “We’re knocking you for having impossible goals.” And to his credit, Joey genuinely laughs that off, going back to showering.

The Base Commander, a Major Clancy Brown, leans back in his seat in his office. He was kind enough to take some time to meet with you, to explain his motives for putting the girls into Domino Squadron. His Office was barren as you thought it’d be, purely professional for someone as clear cut and solid as Major Brown. “The reason I put the potential Idol girls in Domino Squadron is a matter of logistics. Domino’s on their last week, they’ve been cut down to size, and I’ll be surprised if any one of them makes it past Sim Week to the Graduation Drop. I don’t want the girls in any squad that actually shows any kind of competence, they’ll be dragging them down with them.”

“You don’t believe the Idols will get through training?” you ask.

He snorts, kicking his legs up and slouching further back in his seat. “Bluntly speaking, Lieutenant. I’ll be surprised if they survive at all. Domino Squadron started off with fifteen troopers, two were killed, three wounded beyond salvage, the rest washouts.” Figures. “We run a tight ship here, and I will not have my standards lowered for a propaganda stunt.”

For whatever reason, this actually bites at you. Is he implying something? “Major… say if they were to fail, could they try again?”

“Fail, the entire training?” he asks, confusedly. You nod. He wheezes into laughter. “Ahaha! AHAHAHA!” He slaps his knee, bouncing in his chair. “Ahaha!” He looks at you, then blinks in surprise. “You serious? I don’t give second chances! Anyone who fails, they get turned over to people who can use them, usually labrats or people who need strongbacks.”

“These girls are important to the war effort. I’m not asking you to lower your standards just for them,” you say.

[1/2]
>>
>>489150
[2/2]

“Good,” he says. “I won’t.” He dusts his uniform down a bit, twiddling his fingers on his desk. “Lieutenant, those girls will sink or swim. Quite bluntly, I want them to sink, so they’ll stop being a distraction to real Recruits, ones who’ll actually be doing the fighting. I don’t care what the Sky Marshal tells me about them serving as an example. You know who examples are? Real soldiers, ones who do the real fighting, not none of this Idol stuff. One week isn’t enough to train those girls, and after what Sergeant Dune showed me today, a whole year wouldn’t be enough to train them.”

“Major.” You lean back in your chair. “Are you… deliberately trying to get these girls to fail?”

He stares back at you, stonefaced. “Lots of people fail the training. What makes you say that?”

You shrug. “A few things. But honestly, Major, if you’re doing this out of distaste for the Idol Program, I understand, and I say that as their manager who wants to see them succeed.” He grunts, apparently that’s his intent then. “Well, Major, I’m going to tell you now. Those girls can and will succeed, in spite of you.”

“Good luck with that then,” he says. “Because the way I see it, this last week is going to weed out the weak. Only the strong are gonna be troopers. And the way I see those girls, they ain’t troopers at all.”

“That’s not for you to decide, Major. It’s always been up to ourselves if we’re troopers,” you declare.

“Hmph, fair.” He folds his arms, giving you a sharp glare. “Don’t be coddling those girls, they need to learn anyway how the world works past the H&M classes. You got that?” You nod slowly. “Right, Lieutenant. You’re dismissed.” You nod, standing up and saluting the Major as his rank (but not the man) deserves. “Get.”

Hmph. You step out of his office, feeling the slightest bit irritated, angered even. Why are you even angry!? You should be glad anyway that there’s actually someone else who thinks this idea is stupid and wants to end it before it even starts! And yet- the nerve of him…

“Well, the Recruits are doing fine. I imagine we’ll have one or two dropouts due to the stress of the courses involved. Usually, up to this point it was survival training, keeping them constantly stressed but not actively trying to kill them. But now, things are gonna heat up.” You meet with Dune in his office. This time, Dune’s office was much more lively in appearance, featuring a collection of knives that he made himself hanging on the wall, his awards box on the shelf, and a piece of a carapace of an Arachnid Warrior hanging behind his desk on the wall. And on his desk was an old-style double barreled sawn off shotgun, mounted on a post, pointed towards you.

According to him, that shotgun is always pointed at people to make them leave his office faster. You know for a fact that it’s not loaded because he’s told you so, but he doesn’t tell anyone else.

“Right, what about Domino Squad?” you ask.

He grunts, rolling his eyes. “They’re uh…” He sighs. “They’re fucked.”

“Seriously?”

“Marconi simply doesn’t take the training seriously. How he survived is beyond me. Breckenridge is too reckless and impulsive, gets himself wounded or shot very often, he’s well acquainted with the Corpsmen on base. And Lindstrom, Lindstrom’s spineless, follows the other two in what they do. As for the girls, you already know.”

You stand up in your seat. “Dune, those girls need to pass. I don’t really care about the boys, but the girls, they need to get through and be troopers.”

[1/2]
>>
>>489517
[2/2]

“They won’t do that unless Domino passes too,” says Dune bluntly. What? “The girls are dragging themselves down, but I think Domino can be a really good influence on them, if they were good proper troopers, which they can be. It takes a particular set of circumstances to force them into action however,” he explains. “But what do I fucking know, I’m just trainer after all.” You roll your eyes.

“Dune, can you spur them on, light a fire under their ass?” you ask.

“I’ve tried time and time again,” he says. “I don’t know how I’m not reaching those poor sons of bitches, but I imagine it has to do with motivation. If they ain’t motivated, they’ll never anything.”

“Ugh…” You place your hands on your hips, sighing deeply. “How do we motivate them then? I mean- I can’t trample over the Major’s curriculum, he’d have me crucified and whipped on display on the Parade Grounds.”

Dune leans forward. “You remember how you got your shit together when you were my CO?”

“Dune, that was because you broke my arm,” you say simply. You still got the scar from when it didn’t heal properly and it had to be broken AGAIN to heal properly.

“Fair. But I believe that maybe some more personal encouragement is in order,” he says.

“If you think I’m going to strip naked and pose for pin-ups-“

“Relax,” he says. “I’m not suggesting that.” Good, you’re cute, but you’re not a whore. “They’re kids, they’re impressionable. They need a mother in their training perhaps, someone to look after them, treat them right. These Recruits are like children to me, but I can’t be the good Daddy who spoils them. I have to be the one that whips them senseless when they do something wrong.”

You sigh. “Fine.” You start moving to the door. “I guess I’ll go tuck them in and read them a bedtime story, Sergeant. But I can’t be their mother you know. One, I’m not going to be with them forever and the Major is gonna be on my case for coddling them. And two, I’m too cute and young to be a mother. I’m more like that cute older sister that some boys have. The cool one that always knows what to say and what to do, you know?”

He squints at you. “Yeah, it’s a shame you’re more like the annoying little sister I had.”

That actually really hurts. Wow.

Sergeant Dune leans back. “Anyway, I’m not asking you to be their mom. If you have to, designate one. Who knows, you might end up with a squad leader for them.”

“Thanks, Dune.” You’re not going to forget that annoying little sister thing.

Domino Squadron’s tent was a small one. Usually Squadrons have multiple tents for around 4 people, but since Domino had been weeded down, they had but one tent amongst them. A little light was on, showing that the squad was still awake past dinner and right before lights out. So you decide to pay them a visit. You open up the flap and look inside. There you see the six of them laying about in their sleeping bags, girls on one side, boys on the other (as it should be). “How’s everyone doing?” you ask.

“Fine,” says Stacy coldly. She turns over, facing away from you. Eh, she’ll learn.

Olga looks up at you. “What are you doing here, Lieutenant?”

“I just came to check up on you all, I know today was kind of a harsh experience, I just wanted to make sure you all were doing fine.”

Joey smirks, unzipping his sleeping bag a bit. “Well, I mean, I’ll be doing a bit better if you were to join me in my bag, Lieutenant.” Breckenridge slaps him down with a pillow. “Aw, you fuck!”

You step into the tent, then find a place to sort of sit your butt down between the two sides. “Well, hey. Maybe you need some motivation. How about a story?” Rosalie gasps, then immediately scoots closer, crawling over Stacy to do so. Stacy yelps a bit, trying to push Rosalie off before Rosalie settles herself on Stacy’s belly. Breckenridge, Lindstrom, and even Joey look pretty interested. “So let’s see, it was my time at Currie.” Everyone scoots up a bit to listen. “And it’s that time we had to drop everything to fight a forest fire. My second time in a suit in fact.”

“Really?” asks Rosalie. “What was it like?”

“Well, I’ve been to places like Mincke’s World where it’s freezing cold, and Hydora where it’s really wet, and Mars where it’s fucking empty. But, I would say fighting a forest fire was actually incredibly stressful. Because see, it was spreading fast, and it was threatening an entire city’s worth of people. So we had to drop our training and go help fight it before it spread any further and killed someone. Of course, we’re all green recruits so uh…”

“It didn’t go too well?” asks Breckenridge.

“Fighting a fire is different from fighting the Bugs. The Bugs at least retreat when they’re losing, but a fire doesn’t stop until its beaten. And boy, it really beat the crap out of us. We were spraying foam everywhere, wood shrapnel was beating our suits down, flames were choking the air out of us…” You sigh, leaning back. “Nobody thankfully was injured but I did break formation.”

“What happened?” asks Joey.

“There was a cabin in the woods, and inside were a group of people. I couldn’t just leave them in there, but my suit was running low on oxygen and power, and my extinguisher was almost out of foam. So…”

Stacy says, “You left them?”

“No, I saved all five of them, but I wrecked my suit in the process and almost killed myself doing it,” you explain. “I got whipped five times that day for that.”

They all turn a little queasy at the thought of being lashed. “Why though? You were a hero.”

“To the civvies yeah,” you say. “But to the MI, I needlessly risked my life and got a suit wrecked. I actually almost died that day but my good friend Dizzy saved me. Got me out of my suit, carried me out of the fires.”

“It’s good to have friends,” says Joey. “Shame Breckenridge wouldn’t know.” Breckenridge punches Joey in the gut. “Agh! You fuck!”

“Anyway…” You lean back. “You’re gonna need to make friends with each other. Because tonight, you’re running.” Their eyes widen in surprise. “Get your kit on, you’re leaving in five.” The boys all grumble, hurrying to get their Kevlar and packs on. Rosalie and Olga are much more receptive.

Except for Stacy. “Stacy, come on, get your kit on,” you say.

“Ah, let go of me!” Domino Squadron watches on as you drag Stacy out into the cold desert air and drop her onto the dirt. She is without her gear or clothes. You considered making her run without boots, but you’re trying to make an example of her, not cripple her. “Would you fuck off!” she yells. “I didn’t ask for any of this!”

“You could’ve said no when we first met,” you say simply. “Now get running.” The other five look at you, surprised. “The rest of you, get running.” Olga nods, hurrying to usher everyone into running. Breckenridge takes the lead, hurrying everyone into the cold night road. It’s a ten mile march into the Atacama then back to a checkpoint marker and back to camp. And they’re going to have to do it in pitch black and in the frigid cold. Stacy shivers, trying to stand back up. “Come on, they’re not going to wait.”

She looks back at you fiercely, defiantly even. “Fuck you.” You’re about to strike her with the back of your hand, but weirdly she turns around and even starts running after the group to catch up.

Hmph.

You take up a stopwatch, time to time them then. You grab Stacy’s kit as well and haul it on your back, and get running after them.

-

-

Domino Squadron continues running through the frigid night of the Atacama. You follow closely behind them, carrying Stacy’s kit with you as you run along. They run in double column, with Breckenridge and Olga in front, Rosalie and Lindstrom in the middle, and Joey and Stacy in the back. The pace was slow, mostly so Rosalie and Stacy could keep up. “Come on, pick it up!” you yell.

Stacy shivers, hugging herself as she runs in nothing but her underwear. Joey looks to her. “Hey, you alright!?” he says between breathes. Stacy hisses back in response, apparently unable to muster a response. Bluntly speaking her lips were going blue from what you could see under the moonlight, and her legs were going wobbly as she ran as well.

Breckenridge looks back. “Keep it moving, Joey!”

Rosalie looks back. “Come on, Stacy! You can do it! Just a couple more miles to the checkpoint!” Stacy coughs, raising her hand a bit before leaning her head down as she runs. “Stay with us, Stacy!” Stacy apparently ignores that by collapsing completely. Rosalie blinks. “STACY!”

You sigh. Oh shit. The column stops up, turning back to Stacy, who’s trying desperately to get back up. And you thought Rosalie would be the runt of the litter.

Joey immediately kneels down and pulls off his kit and his Kevlar. He unzips his jacket and places it over Stacy’s shoulders. “Come on! Get up!”

Their cohesiveness as a unit is being tested here. Let's see what happens.

You stop up, allowing yourself to see what Domino Squadron is going to do here.

Joey places her hand on Stacy’s shoulder. “Are you alright? Can you stand up?”

“Can she stand or not, Joey!?” yells Breckenridge.

“Just hold on!” Joey snaps back. “Yes or no, shake your head or nod. Can you get up?” Stacy breathes heavily, shivering rapidly. She shakes her head slowly. “A-… alright.”

Rosalie and Olga come over, kneeling down beside her. “Does she need help?” asks Olga. “Are you okay, Stacy?” Stacy grunts, trying to play things off. But its clear now that she’s so cold that everything is a hard task for her. “Joey, help me get her up.” Joey nods, then takes one arm. Olga takes the other, and hurriedly they lift her up. They carry her by the arms and the legs, then start marching down the road to the checkpoint.

“We’re gonna blow our time,” says Breckenridge.

“We’re gonna be short a trooper if we leave her,” Joey says back. Olga and Joey now set the pace, carrying Stacy. The rest of Domino Squad falls in behind them.

Stacy hisses again, barely coughing out a “thank you,” to Joey and Olga.

“Don’t mention it,” says Joey. “I’ll take a kiss instead once we get back.” Stacy spits on his face. “Ah fuck you, I can just drop you, you know.”

“Take turns,” says Rosalie. “Me and Breckie will take her in five minutes.”

“Alright,” says Olga. “Lindstrom, you and me will take her after.”

You start to slow up your follow, coming to a walk as you let them move on into the darkness.

Yeah. They’re starting to come together.

Long way to go though.

I am out of steam yet again. Unfortunately for those who follow LGA2, it's not running tomorrow, baseball reasons. But Sunday is our best bet and target. Hope to see people there.
