Far off, nestled in an otherwise small Japanese town lies the Dark Gate Academy. An institution of tremendous size, the Academy holds a long kept secret. Unknown to the outside world, this unseemly town is home to a tear in our reality. A gate between our world and a bizarre dimension known as the Darkworld. The inhabitants of this hellish world breach this gate and attempt to flood into our reality and spread throughout the world on a regular basis. However, the Dark Gate Academy is home to students of truly extraordinary abilities. The ability to sense the presence of these evil Darkworld creatures, and defeat them in combat, sending them back through the gate.

They cannot close the rift between our world and the Darkworld, but the students and staff of Dark Gate Academy have dedicated their lives to using their amazing powers to hold back the darkness that plagues our world, even if it costs them their lives. They have risen up to the challenge and in secret have become great heroic defenders of the world as we know it.

For many years, Dark Gate Academy has held back the forces of the Darkworld, kept this unspeakable evil contained within their walls. But a dark cloud approaches, and times are about to change. A new chapter in the tale of Dark Gate Academy is about to begin.

“Hey there. How would you guys like to save the world?”

You remain seated in your chair, frozen and dumbstruck, trying hard to comprehend what you just witnessed. Who is this girl? Why did she feel the need to enter like that? And what's this talk of saving the world? Put simply, this was not one of the things you expected to happen today.

Takeshi is the first to rise from his chair, greeting the girl. “Ah, Saki Kobashi! How have you been? W-what brings you here, kicking my door open and whatnot?”

Suddenly a spark of sense appears in this Saki's head. She blushes, and immediately begins to bow. “I am very, very sorry about that, Takeshi-Sensei!” she yells in an apologetic tone. “That was very disrespectful and rude of me. I promise to never do it again, and I'll gladly serve whichever detention you have set out for me if need be-”

“You can cut it out now Saki,” a brown haired boy replies as he enters the room. “You need to remember why you're here.”

“Oh yes, of course...” Saki shakes her head. “Thank you, Ken.”

“Can you idiots just get to the point where you explain what you want?!” Sae exclaims. “We don't have all day you know! This is a very busy club!”

“It is?” Risa smirks.

“Shut up, you!” Sae snaps back.

“Uhh... anyway,” Saki continues, “It is my understanding that this extracurricular society is focused on studying and uncovering the mysteries of the Darkworld, correct? Well, what if I told you that I had a huge lead that would surely help in your investigation?”

“You mean you have a way to impress T-Tekina?!” Takeshi exclaims, before pumping his fist. “Oh Saki, I always knew there was a reason for you being my favourite student last year!”

“I thought I was your favourite?” Ken asks.

Takeshi recoils, and nervously scratches the back of his head. “W-what? W-well... uhh... you know, you're all my favourites!”

“Hmm...” Saki mutters, before continuing. “Well, my point is that I have a task set for you guys that could lead to some major developments. You see, on the outskirts of Dakugeto lies a forest, and within that forest lies the headquarters of a now mostly defunct group known as The Order of the Awakened.”

“We've tangled with them before,” Ken explains. “They're a group that worshipped the Darkworld. We have it on good authority from a former member that within their base contains a tome that could prove very useful to us.”

Saki pauses, surveying the room. “A lot of you have been staying pretty quiet so far... honestly, I expected a bigger reaction to all of this. If you have any questions, don't be afraid to ask.”

Almost unconsciously, you raise your hand to say something.

>What's your stake in all this? What do you have to gain?
>Did you say that order was “mostly defunct”? I don't like the sound of that “mostly.”
>Sorry, I'm just having trouble getting over that ridiculous entrance.

>What's your stake in all this? What do you have to gain?

Saki pauses, before reaches into her jacket pocket. "Well, I promised I wouldn't be like my grandfather. I'll tell you everything."

She pulls out a small Polaroid photo from her pocket and tosses it onto the table. You pick it up to see it's a photo of some white-haired boy in a green jacket, cigarette in mouth.

"Wait a minute..." you mutter, examining the picture. "I recognise this guy... that's right, he's the Class 2 kid who died at the start of Summer!"

You then look up at Saki, placing her face. "And I remember you from the memorial service! You were this guy's... girlfriend... oh."

You cough awkwardly. "That came out a lot ruder than I meant to. Uh, sorry for your loss."

Kiriko examines the picture. "Wait, if you were dating this guy, why does this picture look like it was taken from the bushes?" she asks.

Saki sighs. "Ryoji doesn't like having his picture taken. Also, that was from before we were a couple..."

"Why's it from the bushes?"

Saki snaps the picture back. "I-I was trying to catch him doing something incriminating, okay? T-that's not important right now."

"Yeah, the important thing is you explaining who you are," you repeat.

Saki sighs. "Okay, we'll give you a rundown... Akemi! Bring in the whiteboard!"

Three more girls enter the room, dragging in a wheeled whiteboard. A white haired girl in a very short skirt, a black-haired girl with a small ponytail, and a pink-haired girl dressed... as a pirate?

Saki pulls a black marker from her jacket and gets to scribbling on the whiteboard. "Okay, our mission is to recover someone very important to us. Ryoji Shida."

Saki draw a crude stick figure on the board, giving a small stick cigarette to poke out of it's mouth, and unconsciously doodles three lovehearts above it. "Despite what you've been led to believe, Ryoji is not dead," Saki explains. "After a battle with the leader of this order, he found himself trapped in the Darkworld. Joining him..." Saki doodles another crude stick figure, a more girlish looking one this time. "Is another friend of ours, Alice Maddox."

That name sets you off, as you stand from your chair. "Alice? I'd watch out for her."

The white haired girl snaps at you. "Excuse me?"

"Our research on that girl leads us to believe she may be a demon in disguise."

The white haired girl huffs. "I beg your pardon! My great aunt is not-"

"Great Aunt?" you ask.

"Uhh..." the girl scrambles. "Oh shoot... I meant to say cousin. She's my cousin, silly me."

"No use hiding it from them, Chihiro..." Saki sighs. "I said I'd tell them everything. I... just hoped I could build up to that part..."

Saki turns her attention back to you. "What would you say if I told you that Alice Maddox is in fact a demon?"

>Then she should be killed. She probably brought the Darkworld here!
>She could be captured and studied.

"No!" Chihiro exclaims. "No way are you capturing her! She already had to put up with-"

"Calm down, Chihiro..." Saki interrupts. "And yes. She's still a good person. A great person, in fact."

"Okay... can you please start making sense?" Kiriko replies. "My head is starting to hurt. Is she a demon or isn't she? And what about you?" She points at Chihiro. "If you're related to her, does that make you a demon too?"

Chihiro scoffs. "I resent that accusation!"

Saki shakes her head. "I'll explain everything now. Alice Maddox is a lot older than she appears. In fact, she-"

"-Was in the original class of this school," you mutter. "I read the records, it's what caused my suspicion. Didn't think it was a coincidence that this school had two Alice Maddox's."

"Well, at least you aren't completely clueless," Ken smiles. "It's good to know you were almost able to work this out for yourselves. You weren't exactly on the money, but it shows you're a keen investigator."

"Alice was trapped inside the Darkworld over sixty years ago," Saki explains. "It was there that her body became host to a creature known as an Archdemon."

Archdemon? You've heard that before... yes, Amaya mentioned them while describing her religion.

"Archdemon's are extremely powerful beings that exist as gods within the Darkworld. However, they have no physical bodies, and must take on willing hosts in order to travel between dimensions. The host merges their body and mind with the Archdemon in return for having a single wish granted. This happened to Alice... and it happened to Ryoji."

Saki looks down at the ground for a moment, saddened, before returning to her explanation. "Alice gained control of her Archdemon, but Ryoji lost control of his. A creature known as The Stranger has taken over his body and has begun roaming around the Darkworld."

"I see..." you mutter, "So you want us to rescue him."

"Yes," Saki replies. "And Alice too."

"Hate to break it to you, missy, but you're boyfriend's dead," Sae remarks. "I'm not going to run your errands on a wild goose chase to find a crazy demon running around in his skeleton."

"Ryoji's not dead!" the black-haired girl pumps her fist, before jumping onto the table. "You just have to have faith and believe! With the power of positivity, nothing is impossible, nothing is a lost cause! Believe in the message of Akemi Ibushi! Don't be a grumpy-guts! Put some joy in your heart, and you can accomplish anything!"

Sae's eye twitches, before turning her attention to Saki. "Hurry up and get to what you need us to do! I want you to finish and get out of here so I never have to see that gremlin again!"

"Aww, thank you!" Akemi laughs. "I love that movie! Gremlins are so cute!"

Sae stares daggers at Akemi, while muttering "I hate it, I hate is already" under her breath many times over.

Saki lifts Akemi under the arms and pull her off the table, neatly setting her back on the floor as if she were a small child, or a piece of furniture. "Anyway... we have a single lead in regards to Ryoji's location."

Ken clears his throat before speaking. "Recently, I encountered Alice within the Darkworld. I wasn't able to speak to her long, and she ran off as quickly as she appeared, but she did pass on a message. The Stranger can be found standing between twelve stones."

"Okay... what does that mean?" Risa asks.

"That's the problem," Saki remarks. "We don't know, which is why we need to uncover that tome from the Order's former base. Ours source tells us it will contain the answers we seek."

"What makes you think we're going to stick our neck out for your boyfriend and the weird blonde girl?!" Sae demands to know.

"Because this isn't just about us missing our friends," Saki explains. "A dark storm is approaching. A friend of ours... she's seen things. A horrible turn of events, that puts the very world in danger. When I brought it to his attention, even Principal Wei was concerned. We need Ryoji and Alice, they're among our last hopes. Any questions?"

Kiriko slowly raises her hand. "Yeah..." Kiriko mutters, pointing towards the pink haired girl. "Why is she a pirate?"

The pirate laughs. "Why are you a ninja?"

Kiriko squints her eyes, staring angrily at the girl. "You win this round, pirate."

Saki sighs. "Okay... any real questions?"

>This mission you want us to go on, how dangerous is it?
>What do you mean, your friend "saw" things?

"I won't lie, it's pretty dangerous," Saki replies. "We're not entirely sure what you could find in that base, so there's the added danger of mystery. But as I understand, it shouldn't be anything you couldn't handle. It's still a huge responsibility."

"And your friend?" you ask.

Saki bites her bottom lip, hesitating. "Well... I hate laying all of this information on you at once, but... our friend, Sayeka Ohko, she... well, she can see the future."

"She can... what?" Tami laughs. "Okay, now I'm starting to think this is a prank."

"I would never prank someone!" Saki exclaims in a shocked tone. "It's an ability she gained from a demon. It cost her her real eyesight, but she can see into possible futures... and the one she's seen isn't good."

You stay silent. You wonder if her vision has anything to do with the visions you saw in that cave a while back.

"Anyway, consider this your enlistment," Saki concludes. "The fate of the world is at stake, and we all have to pull our weight. This is this society's chance to make that breakthrough they finally needed, and crack the secrets of the Darkworld. Because when we find The Stranger... first, he's going to give Ryoji back. And second... he's going to give us a lot of answers. Get ready, we still have arrangements to make, but time is of the essence. We'll be sending you out tomorrow evening on this mission... should you choose to accept it."

The Class 2 students exit the room, leaving the whiteboard behind.

"Huh..." Takeshi mumbles. "Well, that was... huh. E-excuse me, I think I need to speak to the Principal for a moment. Could two of you kids be super awesome and do me a favour?"

"What's the favour?" you ask.

"Thanks for volunteering, Kazuma!" Takeshi smiles. "I knew I could count on you buddy!"

"Wait, I wasn't volunteering, I was just ask-"

"Anyway, I need two of you to run down by the school gate and pick up a package that should be arriving. Just drop it off in my office when you're done! If you do, I'll reward you with... uhh... umm... b-bye!"

Takeshi runs out of the room, in a hurry to speak to the principal. You sigh, having accidentally volunteered for this. But who are you going to drag along with you?

>Risa

"Come on Risa," you reply. "Let's go take care of this."

"Risa?!" Sae exclaims. "What, am I not good enough?!"

"Why, do you want to come with?" you ask.

"No!" Sae yells back. "But how dare you not consider me the best for the job! Gah, I'm so angry I could, I could..."

Sae reaches into her bag and pulls out a bento box and starts digging in at a ferocious rate.

Risa pops up from her chair and raises her hands above her head, stretching out and cutting the fine figure reminiscent of a ballerina as she does. "Okay, let's get this over with."

You and Risa step out of the room and begin to make your way down the corridor. "Let me guess..." Risa begins. "You're dragging me along in the hopes that I'll tell you a little more about myself."

"Nah, I just think you'd be more reliable at the task than most of the others," you explain. "But talking about yourself would be pretty nice."

"Trust me, it wouldn't," Risa mutters as she begins to walk ahead of you. "And honestly, I'm much more interested in talking about this upcoming mission."

"It's a lot to take in at once," you state, matching her pace with yours. "But you seemed to take it pretty well. Does anything faze you?"

"Well, I was hardly surprised," Risa replies. "Think about it. Can you honestly say that after joining this school anything could shock you?"

"You've got a point," you reply. "Hell, I've known about this school my whole life."

"That's right, your father was a teacher," Risa smiles. "I had almost forgot. It's not like it's the only thing people talk about when your around. That must suck."

"What?" you ask.

"You know..." she nudges your elbow. "Being in your father's shadow. Must be a real pain in the ass."

>Yeah, it does kinda piss me off.

>I'm not bothered, I respect my father too much to worry about that.

"Wow, you're a real daddy's boy, huh?" Risa laughs. "Seriously? You're just going to bend over and let people forever know you as just... Kibito's son?"

"My dad's called Kankuro," you reply.

"Whatever," Risa shakes her head. "My point still stands. You're not even going to try and compete with that legacy?"

"I love my father," you state. "Why would I want to compete with him?"

As you step out into the courtyard, Risa stares at you. "You... must really miss him."

"Of course I do," you reply. "I never saw him much growing up. The Academy took up most of his time. While he was there, he was pretty much the Vice Principal, although the school doesn't officially hold that title for anyone. Still... he visited whenever he could, and he was a great guy."

"Huh... that sucks," Risa places her hands in her pockets as she walks by your side.

"What about you?" you ask. "You miss your family much?"

"Nice try," Risa smirks. "You aren't getting anything out of me."

As you arrive at the school gate, you're shocked to see that the package isn't there. You wait by the gate for a while longer, but still nothing.

"That's odd..." Risa mutters. "It should have arrived by now, right?"

"Yeah. Maybe it got lost in the mail. Or maybe..."

You turn your head to see the shifty figure of Io Tanaka leaning against a rock wall by the gate. You let out a sigh as you march up to her. She smiles as she sees you and greets you with open arms. "Kazuma, how are you? How was your summ-"

"Cut the crap Io," you reply. "Where's the package?"

"What package?" Io raises an eyebrow. "I don't know anything about a-"

"Does the constant lying ever get tiring for you?" Risa remarks. "Come on, you swiped the package meant for Takeshi-sensei, didn't you? I bet you've got it in your storeroom, ready to pawn it back to him at a ridiculous price."

Io wags her finger. "I'll have you know that all I did was sign for it on his behalf!" she explains. "I had no intention of stealing it!"

"Uh-huh..." you mutter. "So... where is it?"

"Well, that's where we run into a problem," Io explains. "You see... I may have sold Roka a book that I claimed was filled with the answers to last terms history exam, when in faaaaaaact... it was a book of fairy-tales. Poor boy couldn't tell the difference. So, after he returned from Summer vacation, I think he had a vendetta set out against me, because as soon as I accepted that package, he came in a forcibly took it from me! Highway robbery! He even shoved me into the dirt, see?"

Io turns around to reveal dirty mud stains on the back end of her skirt. "Oh, I'm really sorry about letting it happen!" Io cries. "He ran off towards the gymnasium, so you could easily find him there! The package was pretty big, so it's bound to have slowed him down!"

>Fine... you're coming with us, Io.

Io claps her hands together. "Oh, I knew I could count on you to help out! You're a great guy, Kazuma!"

"Yeah, whatever..." you mumble as you, Risa and Io begin to make your way back up to the main building of the school. As you walk, Io confidently rest her elbow on your shoulder and smirks. "So Kazuma, you didn't answer me before. How'd you spend you summer vacation? Visiting the old mother? Travelling abroad? Chilling out by the sand with some hot beach babes?"

"I spent it here," you reply, putting on your headphones in the hopes that she won't ask any further.

"H-here?" Io pouts. "Oh, Kazuma! Don't tell me you wasted your summer here!"

"I didn't waste it," you reply. "I spent the summer researching."

"Well, that sounds like a wasted summer to me," Io laughs. "Oh dear... to tell you the truth Kazuma, if you had nowhere to go during the Summer, you should have just talked to me! I went on an amazing road trip with my family, and you would have been more than welcome to come along had you asked!"

"Yeah, I'm sure I would have..." you mumble, rolling your eyes. "Let me guess, you'd expect me to pay for the gas?"

"Well, it would be fair if you did..." Io shrugs. "Why do you always have to be so distrustful with me?"

"Probably because you're untrustworthy," Risa replies. "Just because a jerk pushed you in the mud doesn't change the fact that you would scam anyone if given the chance."

"Is that how all of you see me?" Io pouts.

"Yep," Risa replies. "It's the one time I find myself agreeing with Roka."

The three of you arrive in the gymnasium, where you find Roka setting up a tall package, about a foot taller than yourself in height, covered in brown wrapping paper, tied together with a string.

"Hey Roka, that's not yours!" you yell out, grabbing his attention.

Roka looks at you and scoffs. "Actually, it is. Now piss off while I open it up!"

"That belongs to Takeshi," you reply. "Give it back now."

"Or what?" Roka challenges you. "Are you going to fight me for it?"

"If you don't, I'm willing to," Risa remarks. "The only way he'll learn is if you beat it out of him. There's no talking with this guy."

She's right, if you're going to get that package back, Roka will need to be fought for it. But are you willing to step up to the plate, or are you going to pass off that duty to Risa?

"I'll fight you for it," you state as you step forward. "I already owe you a beating anyway."

"Oh, you want to stick up for your stupid sister's honour?" Roka scoffs, as he grabs a pair of canes from one of the gym racks, tossing one at you, which you readily catch in your hand. "Bring it on."

You ready the cane as you would a sword, and charge at Roka. Roka deftly moves out of the way, before leaping at you with a downward strike. You spin around and parry the attack, before Roka follows up with an underarm swing, smashing his cane into yours like he was swinging with a golfclub. His attacks are stiff and clunky, but he still has some speed behind them, and man are they strong. Strong enough to send you back even when you block the attack. That last blow staggers you as he comes swinging at you again, and you just about manage to leap back, creating some distance between the two of you.

His attacks take a lot out of you to block, and you wonder how much they take out of him to pull off. He seems to be running on a never-ending assault, a constant barrages of strikes, giving you no room to breath, no time to let up. No wonder he's considered the best fighter in the entire class. Still, you've always been seen to be close behind him, and you're prepared to bridge that gap. The two of you charge at each-other, clashing your canes together. During this stalemate, you throws a punch at you, which you manage to dodge, but you lose your balance and stumble back. He sees his opening, leaping up and bringing the cane down hard, but you manage to roll out of the way at the last second.

Neither of you have managed to get a real upper hand in this fight so far. Roka's just swinging wildly and staying on the offensive, while you're still getting a feel for his style. But now's a good time to come up with a strategy on how to take him down.

>He's going all out in his attacks. If I can just focus on dodging, he'll tire himself out eventually, and it will be an easy win for me.
>He's definitely got the strength advantage, but I've still got a slight advantage when it comes to speed. I should focus on outmanoeuvring him and attack his weak spots.
>If I'm going to fight, I'm going to fight his way. Reckless charging and constant attacks. It may be more difficult, but if I can manage to out-muscle him, he'll truly be humiliated.

>Rolled 70

You have your new gameplan in mind, now the time to put it into action. You're faster and more nimble than he is, so you'll have to use that to your advantage. You don't have to hit him as hard as he's trying to hit you, you just have to hit him. As Roka comes charging at you once again, you slide under his swing, and spin around, whacking him in the back of the knee. He staggers for a moment before charging again, even more pissed off than he was before. He charges with the cane pointing forward, as if he was prepared to skewer you with the blunt instrument. You leap up and over the attack, though, whacking him in the back of the head as you do. Roka must have a hard skull, as your can begins to loosen up and become frayed, ready to break apart as soon as you land that attack.

Roka angrily clutches the back of his head as he stares death into you. You ready you cane, which is currently on it's last leg, prepared for his next attack.

Instead, Roka throws and angry fit, whacking his cane off of the ground before wildly throwing it to his side... where it happens to bump into the package, which weebles and wobbles before eventually falling over. You act on instinct, throwing your cane to the side and sliding into position to grab the package as it topples over, and with your burst of speed, you make it just in time for the package to fall on top of you, briefly pining you on the ground. Roka shakes his head and lifts the package up, freeing you.

The brown wrapping paper appears to have gotten caught on one of your shirt's buttons, because as Roka pulls it up, the paper tears away, beginning to reveal... a statue? Confused, you stand to your feet and pull away what remains of the wrapping. Yep... it's a bronze statue alright, made in the image of Nurse Tekina. You sigh, realising what exactly it is you've been fighting for.

"You charged me 2000 yen for this?!" Roka snaps at Io. "I demand a refund!"

Wait... what? "Io, you told me he pushed you in the mud and stole this from you!" you state.

Io scratches the back of her head. "W-well, I mean, who can you trust in this-"

"When you called this a mystery package, I expected something useful!" Roka yells. "Dammit! You're nothing but a lying rat! You'll pay for this!"

Roka storms off, as Risa stares at Io and shakes her head. "I knew it. The snake in the grass strikes again."

Io stares at you, biting her lower lips, barely able to make eye contact with you. "I'm sorry..."

>See, Io? Stuff like this is the reason we aren't friends.
>Whatever, I don't care. Just don't try pulling it again.

>Wait... you rubbed mud over your ass to cover for your lie?

Io blushes and looks down at the floor. "Well, when you put it like that it makes me sound very foolish... Look, I needed it to be believable, or else you wouldn't have helped me get it back!"

You shake your head. "I can't believe you, Io. Actually selling someone else's stuff. I knew you were bad, but I thought you were above that."

"I am above that, I swear!" Io insists. "It's just... Roka was threatening me and trying to intimidate me when I picked up the package, and I knew he would just try to take it if I didn't at least try to strike up a deal. I thought that if I couldn't get it back after, I could at least give the money I made to Takeshi-sensei... but seeing what was inside, I can tell that statue set him back much more than 2000 Yen..."

"Wow, for some strange reason, I don't believe you." You cross your arms and sigh.

"Think about it Kazuma, why would I ever sell anything without knowing what's inside first? Of course not, but my hand was forced!"

"Look, we'll bring this back to Takeshi... you just give Roka his money back. Otherwise he'll never get off my case."

"Of course, of course," Io bows. "I really am sorry, Kazuma... I hope you don't think any less of me."

"I don't think we could ever think any less of you than we already do," Risa snarks.

Io sighs as she hurries out of the room, briefly glancing back at you as she does.

"Come on, let's bring this to Takeshi," Risa mutters as she grabs one end of the statue. You do the same.

"She sounds genuinely sorry..." you mutter.

"Yeah, she sounds genuine, but has she ever been?" Risa sighs. "Can't ever trust her. She's no girl, that's a snake."

You and Risa carry the statue across the building to your homeroom class, where Takeshi is waiting for you. "Hey!" he smiles as you enter. "I see you've got the... the, uhh... oh, I expected it to be covered up. Yikes... this is embarrassing."

>Don't expect me to run an errand for you again. Do you know what I had to go through for this stupid thing?

>Takeshi, why did you commission a bronze statue of the school nurse? Is it supposed to impress her?

"W-w-what?" a nervous and sweating Takeshi stutters out. "W-why would I... well, uhh... psh... no, you're supposed to impress her!"

"What?" you raise an eyebrow.

"I don't know!" Takeshi cries. "I never know what I'm saying when it comes to her!"

"It's not just her," Risa remarks under her breath.

Takeshi sighs as he sits on the edge of his desk, staring longingly at the statue. "Can I tell you a secret, kids? I... might be sorta kinda... in love with the school nurse."

You can't even bring yourself to feign shock. It's just too much to ask of you. "Yes, we know. Everyone knows."

"T-they do?!" Takeshi exclaims. "Aww man... does Tekina know?"

You shrug. "Dunno. Probably not."

"Yeah, well..." Takeshi begins. "Me and Tekina started in this school together. We were in the same year. I was the bumbling idiot towards the back, and she was the wonderful, amazingly beautiful and smart honour student in the first row. I never got anything done in class, because I was always too busy staring at the back of her head. The back of her head is very nice, just as great as the rest of her... first, she ate lunch in the same room as me, then that evolved to her eating lunch near me, then finally... eating lunch with me. From there, we started talking... well, by 'talking', I mean I babbled out everything you'd expect from a dumbstruck teen..."

"Or everything we'd expect from you as a teacher," you add in.

"Anyway, she somehow... didn't hate me. I don't know how, but we became friends, and I fell in love. And so began the long string of me embarrassing myself when it came to her. I'll never forget when I slipped a love letter into her locker, immediately regretted it, and had to tear the door off the locker to fish it out again..."

You yawn. "That's all great. Why the statue, though?" you ask.

"I don't know!" Takeshi cries. "I-it was an impulse buy! I knew a guy who knew a guy who said he could make me one of these things at a discounted price, and so I jumped at it. Oh... what am I going to do with this? I can't show it to her, I can't!"

>Sure you can, I'm sure she'll like it. Just... don't be weird about it.
>You could just keep it in your room. She won't ever see it, and you'll only be slightly creepier than you've been so far.

>Does she have a birthday or something soon?

Takeshi nods. "Y-yeah, her birthday is in November... I guess I can hold onto this for two months, and then... and then... oh boy..."

"What?"

"Well, I don't know if I could pull it off. Besides, I already have a gift set out for her birthday..."

Two months in advance? Well, him being creepily in love with her at least makes him a better friend than most.

"It'll be fine," you shrug. "You've got two months to think about it, sensei."

"I... I guess you're right!" Takeshi gives a wide grin. "Thanks Kaz, you really are a good buddy!"

"I'm your student," you sigh. "But yeah... no problem."

You and Risa exit the homeroom as Takeshi stares intently at the statue, apparently examining it's accuracy. "Well, look at you giving romance advice," Risa smirks as you walk along the corridor. "You know, I bet you're a real expert with women."

You shake your head. "It was hardly romance advice," you reply. "Just common sense."

"You're not one to brag, are you?" Risa ponders. "Something tells me you try to be more apathetic and lazy than you actually are."

You glance over at her and sigh, before putting on your headphones.

"Ah yes, your universal gesture of not wanting to talk about this," Risa chuckles to herself. "Very well, how about I back up the topic. How are you with women? It seems odd, you're in a club where excluding the supervising teacher, you're the only boy, with five girls in there with you. Most boys your age would describe that as a dream come true, but you don't seem to bothered. Do you have an experience in that regard?"

The truth is you don't have any experience there, but that doesn't mean you have to tell Risa all about it.

Risa laughs and shakes her head. "No, I'm just trying to learn a little more about what makes you tick. For all the times you remark on my secretiveness, you're hardly one to share information yourself. I'm sure you wish I was flirting with you, though. I've caught you checking me out more than a few times, you know."

"Sorry," you shrug. "You have a very short skirt, and you have a habit of bending over when you're repairing things. It can get pretty boring in there, and the eye tends to wander..."

"Don't worry, you're not any more guilty of it than any of the other guys in class," Risa smiles, as the two of you eventually reach your dorms. "You know... I had fun running that errand. I'm actually glad you brought me along."

"We should do it again sometime," you remark, "Maybe then you can tell me a little about yourself."

"Keep dreaming," Risa smirks, as the two of you enter the dorm and she begins to make her way towards her room. "See you in the morning."

"Hey Risa," you mutter, causing her to turn around. "I have to ask... do you not talk about your past because you're private, or because you're ashamed?"

She stares at you, a blank expression on her face. "See you in the morning, Kazuma."

She enters her room, and you enter yours.

>Later

Evening-time. Usually, you'd be hanging out with Kiriko right now, but she's currently out on the town with Mayu. With Chuichi not yet having returned from summer, you find yourself heading into town as well. Not with them, of course, because you don't want Mayu staring at you so coldly that you develop pneumonia. Instead, you're wandering about the town on your own, looking around. Not a lot going on, the town is rarely what you'd describe as "buzzing", but it's nice for a quiet walk while listening to some music. Still, you should also try to stop in somewhere as well, or at least find a nice spot to relax. But where could you go?

>I think they opened up an arcade in town a couple weeks ago. I should check it out.

Why not check out the arcade? It's a new spot in town, and your as into video-games as any fifteen year old boy would be. Maybe they've got a good selection of stuff in there, and you could find yourself having a good, fun night here. You wander into the place and are met with a bunch of bright neon colours. Damn, there are a lot of machines in here. You make your way over to the first machine you see, some on-the-rails light gun shooter, and you put in some spare change. While you may not be an outright marksman, preferring to get up close and personal with swords, your awakening has left your hand-eye co-ordination and your reflexes operating at a level much greater than that of a normal human. The game is absolutely no challenge, and you beat it on a single life. Kinda boring... maybe there'll be something here that you can play like a normal human being.

As you wander around the arcade, you hear a very familiar voice crying out, a voice you always dread hearing.

"No Gado, you have to duck! Yes, now kick him, kick him! Haha!"

You turn your head to see the pint-sized dictator herself, Kuin, coaching her best and only guard Gado as he plays a fighting game's arcade mode. Looks like he's against the final boss, and by the time you approach the machine, the boss has been defeated. As the cutscene shows a burly russian man dancing and the credits start to roll, Kuin jumps in celebration. "We did it! We conquered the Street Fighter machine!"

Well, Gado did. All Kuin did was yell at him while he did it.

"I now claim this machine for the glory of Kuin!" she yells, pulling a miniature flag from her breast pocket. She stands on her tip-toes, hopping up, trying to place the flag atop the machine, but not quite managing it. "Gado, boost!" she exclaims, as Gado picks her up like she was a child, allowing her to place the flag atop the machine.

As Gado places her down, he turns around to see you, and immediately throws his arm in front of Kuin, nudging her behind him as he dons a defensive stance. "Kazuma, what are you doing here?" he asks. "Are you stalking Kuin? If you are, I won't hesitate to take you down to protect her."

>What? No, I'm just here to check out the arcade.
>Actually, yes. I'm madly in love with her, you see, and have been following her for months.

"What?!" Gado snaps, as he reaches into his pocket, likely ready to pull out a gun in a private place.

Kuin gasp, slightly red in the face. "In love? I see... so that's why you turned down your offer to guard me! You were conflicted between your duty and your feelings! I understand now!"

You rush to calm Gado down, before he ends up murdering you. "Gado, relax! I was just kidding! Bad joke, I know!"

Gado glares at you, assessing if you're telling the truth or not, before pulling away and relaxing his stance... but not before thumping you on the head in a way that his fist resembled a hammer, and the top of your head resembled a nail. "Ow!" you exclaim, rubbing the sore spot.

"Don't ever joke about something like that again!" Gado barks at you. "Protecting Kuin is something I take very seriously. Look at her!"

He grabs Kuin and holds her up, displaying her like a small child would a teddy bear. "This girl should not be hurt, she should not be stalked, not even in jokes! Understand me?"

"Yeah, I get it..." you sigh.

"I don't understand," Kuin pouts as Gado places her back on the ground. "Is he in love with me or not?"

"I'm not," you mutter.

"Oh." Kuin crosses her arms. "In that case, I don't feel bad giving you orders. Kazuma, I command you to play a game with us!"

"Sure, why not?" you reply. It's not like you can get any challenge out of this single player games. Perhaps playing with similarly powered individuals will prove more fun.

"Excellent! Let me just find the right machine!" Kuin exclaims, as she begins to run around the arcade, searching for the next thing to play.

"So... how did you spend your summer?" you ask Gado. "You didn't mention before you hit me."

Gado huffs. "Kuin invited me to come stay with her and her foster family over the summer. I took her up on the offer."

"What about your own family?" you ask. "Did you visit them?"

"Don't have one," Gado replies, as he catches up with Kuin.

"Aha! Now this is a perfect machine to test our skills!" Kuin laughs, as she presents a Dancing Rhythm game. She steps up onto the pad, and points at you with a dramatic flair. "Kazuma, your queen challenges you to a trial of skills! If you can't defeat me in this game, you must dedicate yourself to my leadership for life!"

"And if I win?" you ask.

"You don't get to make demands!" Kuin exclaims. "You're not the ruler here. Buuut... we'll see what you want, if you win."

You step up to the plate, as Kuin develops a wide grin on her face. "Good! It's about time you danced with your queen! Especially after you snubbed me at the school dance!"

Huh, she's unhappy about that, is she? You suppose she must have wanted to dance with you then. Too bad.

Kuin insists on selecting the song, because of course she does. As she scrolls through the tracks and finds the one that she likes the sound of the most, she turns her head to face you. "So, do you know much about these dancing games."

You smirk as you put on your headphones. "A little."

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ae_lCDuBAFQ

The music starts, and you both get ready. In the early goings, neither of you are missing a single beat on the song, both moving in perfect tandem with the music. Looking over at the little scamp, you can't help but feel impressed. She moves with such energy and vigour, it's almost infectious. Watching her put so much effort in makes you want to put a lot in yourself, and you find yourself giving it your all in the stupid rhythm game. It comes very close, and neither of you have missed a single beat so far, until in the last seconds, Kuin messes up her timing slightly, and only manages half the points on one of the notes.. As the song ends, the scores flash up. You got a perfect score, topping the machine's leaderboards, while Kuin was half a beat away from a perfect score. She pouts and lightly stamps her feet in frustration. "Gah! How could I lose!"

"He must have cheated," Gado suggests. "No, wait... it's the machine! The machine must be wrong! Do you want me to destroy it?"

"Hmm..." Kuin pauses thinking it over, considering the possibility, before letting out a sigh. "No... the true sign of a benevolent ruler is knowing when they've been beaten, even if they absolutely would destroy their opponents in a re-match without a doubt! You win, Kazuma..."

"Hey, you came close" you shrug. "Nothing to be ashamed of."

Kuin gives a smile as she adjusts her cape, which was flying about during the dancing. "Well... I suppose it's time you received you reward. What do you ask of me? Do you want my title? You want to take away my rulership don't you?"

Damn, you hadn't thought it through this far. You should probably ask for something, no matter how small for winning.

Kuin pauses. "Wait, you don't want to take control of my benevolent dictatorship? You don't want to become a ruler? You... just want me to be part of your club?"

"Yeah, I'd like to have you around more," you smile. "You're pretty fun."

In a rare spot of silence for the usually loud and obnoxiously eccentric Kuin, she just stares at you. Then, you notice her eye begin to water. "Kuin..." you mutter. "Are you starting to cry?"

"What?" Kuin exclaims, turning her back to you and wiping her eyes with her sleeves. "Don't be ridiculous. Dictators don't cry! We're strong and fearless!"

"She's happy," Gado explains, his arms crossed. "She really wanted to be invited to be part of a group, but no-one would approach her."

"Gado, don't tell one of the subjects that!" Kuin exclaims turning back around, her eyes red.

"Of course," Gado continues, "I don't trust that club of yours. If Kuin is to become a member, then I demand to join as well!"

You shrug. "The more, the merr-"

"No!" Kuin exclaims. "He invited me to join the club, and only me! Gado, as your ruler I command that you let me be a part of this on my own! I trust this club enough! I don't expect them to hurt me or assassinate me... well, except for Sae. But that's okay, because I'll have Kazuma as a loyal guard during those meetings, right?"

"Yeah... sure."

Gado stares angrily at you, before turning his attention to Kuin. "Please rethink this. You can't go in there without someone to protect you!"

"I have someone to protect me!" Kuin explains, placing her hand on your arm. "You don't have to worry about me this time!"

Gado huffs. "Fine... but I still insist that I guard the door during meetings."

You shake your head. "Gado, you really don't have to-"

"An excellent idea!" Kuin yells. "Gado, during club meetings, you'll be the door guard, and Kazuma will be my personal guard! Your benevolent dictator will be doubly protected! Huzzah!"

Gado shakes his head, as all three of you journey back to the school grounds before curfew. You arrive back at the dorms, as Gado walks with Kuin to her room, before wishing her goodnight, as she steps into her room, and Gado makes his way to his, but not before stopping to say a few words to you. "I still don't fully trust you, Kazuma... but you're better than most. I haven't ever seen her smile like she did when you played that game with her. Just know this... if you hurt her, I'll hurt you."

As Gado makes his way back to his room, you find yourself wondering how to spend the night.

>I should get an early rest. That mission is in the morning.
>I should chill in the common room, listen to some music.

>I should chill in the common room, listen to some music.

Time to spend some nice relaxing time to yourself. You've earned it, in your opinion. You plop yourself down on the couch and throw on your headphones, gently closing your eyes as you drift off into the music. What a great feeling...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rOU4YiuaxAM

Nothing better than this. Just you, a comfy sofa, and some nice tunes to nod along with as-

*SMASH*
*CRASH*
*SMASH*

-What the hell was that? You open your eyes, and remove the headphones. You look around, turning your attention to the kitchen area where you see Hanako toppled over amongst some broken plates. Scratch that, a lot of broken plates. Down on her knees and tentatively rubbing her bruised behind, she groans in pain and embarrassment. The she looks up at you, realises you can see her in her current state, and she lets out a squeal.

"Noooo! Don't look at me! I... this was all an accident! I... oh, I'm so clumsy! Please, turn around and ignore me!"

You shake your head as you stand from the couch and make your way over to her. "Calm down, it's not a big deal, Hanako..."

You offer out your hand, in order to help her up. She accepts, but as she stands she slips on a fractured plate, toppling over and landing on top of you. I would be reminiscent of one of those scenes from a romance show, where the girl falls atop the guy, and they're caught in a compromising position... except Hanako came falling headfirst into you, as you foreheads connect with a thud, so instead of romantic, it was just painful.

Hanako quickly rolls off you before things get even more awkward, and she sits up, looking at all the destruction in her wake. You sit up too, and she looks at you and gasps. "K-Kazuma, your head is bleeding! Did... did I do that?"

You reach up and feel your forehead, and sure enough there's a trickle of blood coming down. "Yeah... I guess you did," you groan in pain.

Hanako turns beet red. "Oh my gosh, I am so, so sorry! I'll grab the first aid kit from the wall!"

"No!" you throw your hand up before she moves any further and creates more of a mess. "I'll get it myself. You just, uhh... sit there. Don't move. Ever."

You pick yourself up and make you way to the wall. You pull some bandages from the first aid kit, which you then bring over to Hanako, as you kneel, facing her. "Little help?" you ask. Hanako nods, taking the bandages, and wrapping them properly around your head.

"Sorry... sorry... sorry..." she mutters under her breath with every full rotation of the bandages around your skull.

>No need to apologise. It was an accident.
>Hanako, how are you so popular when you're this awkward?
>Gotta say, you've got a gift. You'd make a killing as a comedy act.

>No need to apologise. It was an accident.

"What?" Hanako exclaims, shocked. "I am not a comedy act! Y-yes I know I can be fairly clumsy... well, very clumsy sometimes... well, all the time..."

"Hanako..." you mutter, but there's no getting through to her. She's continues to babble while further wrapping the bandage around your head.

"Everybody always says that I'm funny, but I'm never trying to be! If I'm not trying to be funny, c-can I really be considered funny? Isn't humour all about the intent? I just have no intent of b-being a a comedy act, and-"

"Hanako!" you exclaim, trying to break her out of her babbling trance, as she unconsciously wraps the bandages over your face, covering first your eyes, and then eventually your mouth. You let out a muffled yell as your grab her arms, stopping her and calling her attention to the mess she made.

She looks at you and somehow manages to turn even more red in the face than she was before. "Agh!" she exclaims, as she quickly works at unwrapping the bandages. "I'm sorry, I'm sorry, I'm soooory!"

As your mouth comes uncovered, you address her. "Don't worry, like I said before, you don't have to apologise. It was an accident."

"But I do have to apologise!" Hanako explains, as she drops her hands onto her lap in defeat. "As class president, I-I'm supposed to be dignified and carry myself with grace and class... but I'm nothing more than a clumsy comedy act!"

Hanako hangs her head low and closes her eye shut tight, as she lightly bangs her palms against her temples. "Stupid Hanako, stupid!"

>If you're so ashamed of your clumsiness, why don't you work on it?

"I... I wish I could, but how?" Hanako asks. "I try so hard, but I can't help it! I just keep messing up! I don't know what I can do..."

You shrug. "Well, I guess we should start by cleaning up. Can't leave all these broken plates here."

Hanako nods, and is prepared to get up, when another person enters into the room, likely hoping for a late-night snack.

"Oh my, what do we have here?" Atasuke chuckles as he enters into the room, seeing you and Hanako kneeling down before each-other. "Two young beautiful lovers caught in the act?"

It's then that he notices the broken plates and the bandage around your head. "Ooh, and it seems the lovemaking was too fierce to handle!"

Hanako blushes, as she picks herself up off the ground, and of course, tripping. You manoeuvre out of the way of another nasty head-bump and catch her as she's falling, raising her back to her feet.

"Oh, how romantic!" Atasuke swoons, giving you and Hanako a wink. "You know, I think I'll clean up the mess you two have made!"

"What, really?" you ask. "You really don't have to-"

"No, I insist!" Atasuke replies, daintily waving his hand. "You two should run off to bed together, and I'll worry about these pesky little plates! Though I do so hope I don't break a nail in the act..."

"Uhh, thanks Atasuke..." you reply. "Wait... together?! No, it's not like-"

"No need to defend yourself, I know all the scandalous little secrets!" Atasuke winks. "You two have fun, and I'm right here if you want me to join in! Ohoho!"

He gives off a posh laugh as you guide Hanako back to her room, before retiring to yours for the night.

>THE NEXT DAY

You spent the entire morning preparing your things for the upcoming mission. You dozed through classes, then spent lunchtime explaining to others that Kuin would be joining the club starting from tomorrow on, and that she would have to be caught up to speed with everything you've learned so far.

Sae did not take kindly to Kuin joining the club. Neither did anyone, really. Even Kiriko was hesitant to let her in. You're not shocked, Kuin definitely has a gift for rubbing people the wrong way.

After class ended, you immediately make your way towards the clubroom, eager to arrive first. The prospect of this mission is sending tingles up and down your spine, you're so excited. As you arrive at the clubroom however, you find that you actually aren't the first to arrive. In fact, Saki is already there, leaning on the edge of the table, staring at the whiteboard with reddened eyes. More specifically, she's staring at the smoking stick figure with three love hearts drawn above it.

You awkwardly knock on the already open door as you enter in order to grab her attention. Noticing you, she shifts into gear, sniffling a little before addressing you professionally. "Kazuma Asai... you've arrived early. Good work! I always respect those who arrive early. Punctuality is key!"

>This Ryoji guy was real important to you, wasn't he?

"What? It isn't your business to be asking those kinds of questions!" Saki crosses her arms in a frustrated manner, before letting out a sigh and dropping them again. "But yes, he is. He's more important to me than anybody else in the world. Before I met him... I was incomplete. We both were. He was a crude and cowardly delinquent, and I... well, there's no politer way of putting it than saying I had a stick up my butt. In no world would anyone have thought that someone like me and someone like him could fit together... but we did. We completed each other, like two pieces of a puzzle. When we were together... we felt like our lives had meaning. They had purpose. We had so many plans... and they got snatched away from us at the last second. Ryoji is lost without me, and I'm lost without him."

"Wow..." you mutter. You can tell just by the way she speaks, the truth and genuine love in her words. You never thought that kind of affection truly existed.

"Just wait until we get Ryoji back," Saki smiles. "I think you two would get along perfectly."

"He a great guy, huh?" you ask.

Saki smirks, as she looks back at the whiteboard doodle. "He's been nothing but trouble since he got here. I'll be glad to see him off."

"What?" you raise an eyebrow, confused.

Saki snaps back to you and giggles to herself. "Oh, nothing. Just remembering a different time. I was so dumb back then..."

The door swings open, as the other club members begin to pool in, followed closely by a boy with black hair and glasses. "This is Reiji Yasukawa," Saki introduces him. He gives an unenthusiastic wave as he stands by her side. "He's a friend of ours, and a former member of the Order of the Awakened."

"What made you switch sides?" Kiriko impulsively asks.

"Considering my classmates, I sometimes don't know why myself," Reiji adjusts his glasses. "All that matters is I did. Now, for your mission, you will be travelling here."

He pulls a small map from his blazer pocket and unfolds it on the table, pointing at a marked spot within the forest outside of Dakugeto. "Right here is the last remaining bastion of the Order of The Awakened," Reiji explains. "While all the high-ranking members are gone, you may finds some remnants of those still dedicated to the Order's cause holed up inside and around the perimeter. Your mission is to get in there and retrieve whatever pieces of information if you can. Any scrolls or tomes that remain within and haven't already been cleared out. The main item on the agenda is this..."

Reiji unveils an illustration of a dark purple tome with the image of a lion on front. "This is the tome that we need. Everything else comes secondary to this. Do not leave until you have this in your possession, okay?"

"Okay, that's pretty standard stuff," you reply. "Anything else?"

"Yes," Saki adds in. "Because of the stealthy nature of this mission, we've decided that the group should be contained to five people."

"Hang on, there's seven of us-"

"Yes," Saki replies. "And while Takeshi is busy with his work, that still means that one of you needs to be left behind for this one. Sorry."

Well, you know for a fact that you're not staying behind. Sure, you'd love to be humble and bow out, but this is just too damn important to you. But who's the club member who won't be coming along?

"What?!" Sae snaps. "You're leaving me behind?!"

You scratch the back of you head. "Sorry, but this mission involves stealth, and that's not really your thing. You're pretty loud and aggressive..."

"Are you kidding me?!" Sae yells, poking you hard in the chest. "Call me loud and aggressive again, and I'll pummel you into the ground, got it?!"

After the nastiness of Sae's entire being is out of the way, the remaining five of you get set to travel out, using the map Reiji gave you. It's not a long journey to get into the forest, it's only about four miles out of town. As you reach further into the forest, inching closer and closer to the base of the Order, Tami begins to scout ahead. You and the others wait under a densely leaved tree while you wait for her report. As you lean against the tree, drinking from a bottle of water after the walk, you are approached by Mayu.

"I didn't expect you to bring me along," she states in a matter of fact tone. "We both have similar fighting styles. I was under the impression that you would find me redundant."

"Well, redundancy didn't come into it," you reply. "Sae isn't cut out for this kind of mission, but you're more suited to it."

"I see..." Mayu mutters. "Of course, there is the other reason. We don't get along."

"No reason why I would leave you behind then," you reply. "We not exactly the best of pals, but I still recognise your worth, Mayu. You're a productive member of the team."

Mayu pauses. "I see... thank you, Kazuma."

You smirk. "My ears must be failing me, because it sounds like you just thanked me."

"Yes, they must have," Mayu replies. "You should consult an otologist, that could be a serious issue."

Tami comes rushing back towards the group. "Okay, here's my scouting report. The forestation around the entrance is heavy, and we've got a clear shot at it."

"Nice!" Kiriko pumps her fist.

"Well, almost a clear shot," Tami clarifies. "To the right we've got three hooded figures, and to the left side, we've got two, but one of them looks pretty bulky and is carrying an axe. If we take the clear path down the middle, we've got a shot of getting inside without having to fight through anyone, but if we get caught, we'll be surrounded pretty quickly."

"Okay..." you mutter, "The middle path, what's the length of the area we can be detected within?"

"If I could hazard a guess, I'd say about 20ft," Tami explains.

"And Kiriko, your teleportation lets you travel how far?" you ask.

"I've been working hard on pushing it, but the furthest distance I've poofed to so far is 13ft, and only 5 if I'm teleporting someone with me."

Damn... so you can use that to just zoom to the entrance. Still, you'll have to decide which direction you're going to take.

>Let's take the right side.

Sure, there's more people on the right side, but they don't look as threatening as the axe-man on the other side. And trying to sneak up through the middle would prove disastrous and likely deadly if you failed. You make your way toward's the forests right path, until Tami motions for you to stop. "See? Right there," she whispers, pointing out the three hooded figures wandering the right side area. Two are carrying swords in their hands, while one brandishes a spear. Interesting. All involved in melee combat. They don't look very tough either, but it's all really a matter of taking them out quickly enough to clear your path before they alert the other two as well.

"So, what's the plan?" Tami whispers in your ear. "What do you want us to do?"

"I'm still thinking," you reply. "And why exactly am I leader all of a sudden?"

"Well, Kiriko's supposed to be in charge, but she told us to run any and all questions by you," Risa explains.

You look back at Kiriko, who gives an apologetic shrug. "What? You're better with these situations than me. Kaz, you've always been the brains, while I've always been the frontman."

"You're just as smart as I am," you reply to her. "You just don't apply yourself properly."

"Says the laziest guy I know," Kiriko smirks.

"We're wasting time," Mayu mutters. "What is your plan?"

Hmm... there's lot of ways to go about this. Any one of you can approach this group from a different direction, all with the potential for at least some effect. You can really only dish out one command at a time. Tami or Risa could be useful, due to the ranged nature of their attacks. Tami also probably feels at home in a forest like this, which could give her the advantage. Then there's Mayu, and yourself. Either one of you could cut these guys down if you got the drop on them. Kiriko's also capable of some effective sneak attacks. A lot of options, but it's up to you to decide which is the best course of action to take.

"Tami, can you try to take these guys down from here with you bow?" you ask.

Tami smirks. "Come on Kazuma, I'm not going to try. I'm going to succeed. Just watch a real hunter in action."

You stand back, as Tami slings her bow over her shoulder and begins to climb the nearby tree. She climbs high enough to reach the first branch that can support her weight. She steps onto it, looks out over her vantage point of the three order members, then shakes her head, before turning back and climbing to the next highest branch. This one doesn't meet her standards either, as she climbs up another branch higher before finally reaching her preferred point. She's real high up, and heavily concealed by the leaves. She shuts one eye as she pulls out her bow, followed by three arrows from her quiver. She takes a while setting up, getting a good idea of where the order members are standing, and accounting for other factors in her shot, including the wind. Eventually, she winds up the three arrows on the bow's string, aiming directly at all three members of the order.

"It's hunting season," she smirks, as she let's go and fires the arrows. All three make their targets, piercing the heads of the hooded enemies, taking them all down in unison. Impressive... even more than you could have imagined. Tami hurriedly climbs down the tree, back to join the rest of the group. "That oughtta make the coast clear now," she says, dusting her hands.

"Nice work, Tami," you reply, "Now come on."

With nothing in your way, the five of you make it to the entrance of the base. The entrance is a simple archway, not even a door in the way. You're the first to hurry walk through, which proves to be a costly mistake. As soon as you step through the archway, a wall shoots up behind you, separating you from the rest of the group.

"Kaz!" Kiriko exclaims in concern.

"Dammit... Kiriko, can you teleport into here?" you ask.

"No," Kiriko's upset voice calls out from the other end. "I can't go through walls. I need to be able to see where I'm going."

"Dammit..." you mutter under your breath. "Wait there, you guys. I'll look around for a mechanism that will let you in."

You turn around, and see a corridor before you, with two turns along the right side of the wall. As you take a few steps forward, however, you see a pistol poking out from behind the first corner, pointed right at you. You ready your sword, ready to make a sudden move, when from around the corner walks out a face you barely recognise. A boy with short green-hair stares at you with a look of caution.

"I know you," you mutter. "You're in my class, aren't you?"

"What are you doing here?" the boy asks.

Yes, this is definitely him. Anri Kitamura. The kid's only showed up for about two classes and the exams for the entire first semester, but he still got a perfect score on said exams. "I could ask you the same thing."

"I'm investigating the murder of Yasunari Hatake."

"Murder?" you ask. "He was killed in the Darkworld."

"Yes," Anri mentions. "But not by a Darkworlder. No, I believe he was murdered by a member of our Class... and you just became a key suspect."

“Whoa, hang on... key suspect? Me?”

Anri keeps the gun focused on you. No matter how fast you move, he's not going to miss at the range. You'll just have to talk this out. “Don't you think you're being a little paranoid here?”

Anri shakes his head. “Everyone says that, but no. I'm not paranoid. It's actually very suspicious that you're here right now.”

“I could say the same thing about you!” you reply. “Look, it's obvious we're both investigating the same thing. I'm not a killer, okay? Look, there's more of our classmates just outside, but that wall's keeping them out.”

Anri stares at you, keeping the barrel of the gun focused on you, before eventually turning his aim to the side and firing upon an order member as he rounds the corner further down the corridor, taking him out. “Very well Kazuma Asai, I'll believe you for now,” he replies as he holsters his pistol. “I have a feeling neither of us could make it through this area on our own.”

“This place doesn't look that big,” you reply.

“It's not,” Anri replies. “But it's still filled with members of this Order of the Awakened.”

“Not to mention that the room with the tome is probably littered with traps,” you mutter.

“Tome?” Anri asks. “What tome?”

Huh, you thought he might have known about it already. Apparently not. “There's a tome here that we've been sent her to recover on behalf of Class 2. It contains information important to our investigation, and probably yours too.”

“I see...” Anri mutters. “Then that's what we must find. Good to know, I was simply surveying this place in the hopes of finding a clue, it's a relief finding out that such a thing exists, and I'm assuming you know what it looks like.”

“Yeah, it's dark purple with a lion on the front,” you remark.

“Then I'll keep my eyes peeled for it,” Anri replies. “Now, come on. This pathway would have just taken me back to the entrance, but with that stone wall in place, it's just a dead end.”

You and Anri follow the only path you can, taking a right turn at the end of the corridor, followed by another sharp right, and a sharp left turn taking you into another long corridor. About 8ft down the corridor is a turn to the right, while at the end of the corridor, about 12ft away there is a turn to both the right and to the left. Three options on which direction to go.

You peer around the corner, making sure to keep yourself concealed, as you note an order member patrolling around a pillar up ahead. Anri in turn peers around the second right turn. He holds up his index finger, signalling that there is a guard patrolling around there too. If the two of you can time your actions properly, you should be able to take out both guards at once, within alerting the other.

You hold up three fingers, and begin counting down, preparing for your time to strike. 3... 2... 1... and the two of you move into action, you hurried creep up behind the order guard while his back is turned, and leap on his back, beginning to choke him out. He gasps for air before eventually losing consciousness. You listen out, but don't hear anything from Anri's end. That's good, it means he made his move successfully too.

You look around the pillar, finding nothing. With a sigh, you take the sharp left turn that is presented to you, followed by another sharp right which brings you... face to face with Anri.

"I appears these two corridors are connected," Anri replies. "They just take us right back around."

"Damn..." you mutter. "Well, at least we managed to take down two of these guys. That's two less to fight off if we get caught in here."

Anri nods as the two of you return to the corridor you started in, this time opting to take the left turn at the end. After two more right turns in this winding corridor, you find yourself walking down a long empty stretch with Anri.

"So, who are you supposed to be, exactly?" you ask. "Some kind of detective?"

"Something like that, yes..." Anri mutters, reloading his pistol.

"Because last I checked, you're supposed to be a student."

"Last I checked, that isn't any of your business," Anri retorts.

"Still suspicious of me?" you ask.

"I'm willing to work with you right now," Anri replies. "That's all that you need to know."

Eventually, the two of you wind up in a corridor with a door in the left wall. Anri inspects it. "It's not locked," he mutters. "But I have no idea what's inside."

>Leave it for now. Let's follow this corridor to the end, then turn left.

Anri nods. "Good thinking, this door is too obvious. It's far too likely to be a trap. Let's move on first and see if we can find anything else."

The two of you move down the corridor and turn to the right. You follow your path until you come across a door at the very end of the hallway.

"Now, I wonder what's through here..." Anri mutters scratching his chin in thought.

You turn your head to look down the next corridor. In the left wall is another wooden door. "Anri, check that out."

Anri turn his head and pauses in though. "Well, considering the position of these hallways, that second door likely leads into the same room we just passed up. That one doesn't look locked either... still, either one of these rooms could be a trap."

"But they could also be the room with the tome," you reply. "You can't let your paranoia get the best of you at every turn. Eventually, we're going to have to try one of these rooms, or else we won't find anything."

"Paranoia?" Anri mutters. "I'm not paranoid. I just have a tendency to overanalyse."

"Okay, but you can't keep over-analysing, eventually you'll have to take a risk."

Anri pauses, then nods. "Very well, I understand. You can have final decision on where we go. I'll raise my concerns, but you'll make the ultimate choice. If you feel a risk is worth it, then I will go along. Now... what's our next course of action?"

"Very well," Anri mutter. "We'll use the second door."

"See?" you smile. "Isn't it better when you're less distrustful of every possible action you can make?"

"Kazuma..." Anri mutters, as you motion to open the door.

"Look, as long as we're careful, we'll be just fine!" you reply, pushing the door open.

"Kazuma, wait!" Anri yells, but it's too late for you to react. As soon as you push the door open, you set off a trap, as jets of fire shoot up from the doorway, singeing your right arm. You stagger back, resisting the urge to cry out in pain as the intense heat badly burns your right arm.

What's worse is what you find inside the room. Two guards, who have now been alerted to your attention, both of them drawing their swords.

Anri draws his pistol and turns to you in concern. "Kazuma, are you alright? Can you still fight?"

"M-maybe..." you mutter. Your sword arm is burned, badly limiting your movement. Taking these guys down in close quarters won't be easy for you in this impaired state. Still, there's only two of them and you have Anri backing you up, so maybe the fight won't be that difficult.

Your arm is weak, but you think you can still hold them off while Anri fires at them with what little space he has. He pulls two pistols from each hip holster and gets to firing. Unfortunately, it's pretty cramped and he doesn't have a good angle, causing the first couple shots to miss. The two guards bridge the gap between you and you pull out your sword. You parry a couple attacks, but the pain in your arm is too much as you are knocked to the side as the two guards charge at their biggest threat, Anri.

Anri makes good of outmanoeuvring them at first, using his smaller stature to his advantage and sliding under their legs, giving himself more room. As he rises, positioned on one knee, he fires a shot and point blank range, piercing into one of the hooded figures gut. The order member topples over face first onto the cold floor, as the second continues his attack. Anri isn't able to collect himself in time, as the guards swings his sword down upon Anri's left shoulder, slicing it badly. Anri yelps, as he staggers back, and you find yourself having to charge forward, mustering whatever strength remains in your arm to raise your blade and charge forward, attacking the remaining guard.

You muster up what strength you have in your weakened arm, as you raise your sword high. As the guard corners Anri, you rush in, slicing him and cutting him down from behind. Blood spurts at a considerable rate from the guard's body covering your face, forcing you to shut your eyes tight. The guard falls to the ground, as Anri breaths heavily, his eyes wide. He likely thought these were his final moments. Still badly bleeding from the shoulder, he leans against the wall and slides down into a seating position, clutching the open wound.

"Do you have any medical supplies?" he asks, groaning in pain.

You kneel down in front of him, examining the wound. "Afraid not," you mutter. You wish you did, but the bag with the first aid items was in Kiriko's possession, and with you seperated, it's no use.

Anri's cut pretty bad, you doubt he could even raise his left arm if he tried, leaving his ability to fire with that hand useless. You also doubt how much he'll be able to keep his working hand steady and aiming while he deals with the pain. "We need something to stop the bloodflow..." Anri mutters.

"How about your jacket?" you suggest. It can act as a make-shift bandage if you tie it around the wound.

"My jacket..." Anri mutters. For whatever reason, he's hesitating to take it off.

You shake your head. "Okay, I'll just use my sportscoat instead. And hey, it's already red, so I don't have to worry about bloodstains!"

You take off your jacket and tie it around Anri's wound. You then take him by the left hand and help him to his feet.

"Thank you," Anri says, "How's your arm?"

"Painful. Weak," you reply. "But I'll manage. Just need to hold out until we get out of here."

"Hmm..." Anri hums to himself. "It looks like things have just gotten easier. Observe."

Anri calls your attention to the left facing wall of the room. A lever-based mechanism, with several handles to be pulled back.

"I imagine most of these are for the building's various traps," Anri explains. "Look, this green handle in the top right, that's the master lever. If I just pull it..."

Anri grabs the handle and pulls it back. You hear various clicks that sound like the door traps disarming, and the even more comforting sound of a wall being raised up in the direction of where you entered. Looks like the rest of your group aren't trapped outside any more.

You head back the way you came in order to meet up with them in the corridor. Unsurprisingly, an excited Kiriko welcomes you by mobbing you with a hug.

"Kaz! You're okay!" She exclaims, as you swing her around before she returns to her feet. "Are you hurt?"

"Eh, just a couple burns, nothing to worry about," you explain.

"And who's this?" Kiriko asks, her attention caught by the green-haired boy.

"Anri Kitimura," Mayu states. "A classmate of ours. What's he doing here?"

Anri gives a respectful bow. "It appears our respective investigations have met. I've been looking into the death of Yasunari Hatake, and that investigation has brought me here."

"Nice, a new friend!" Kiriko pumps her fist, as the group return to the hallway you and Anri had last made it to.

"If that door was trapped before, that mechanism should have disabled it," Anri reminds you. "Still, we could also try pressing forward and finding out what else lies ahead. Even if there isn't a trap to be set, the room itself could be filled with enemies."

"You don't have to worry so much about that," Risa mentions. "You've got the rest of us backing you up if a fight breaks out from here!"

You learned your lesson from last time. Even with all of the door traps disabled, you know you can't be too careful. You motion for the others to ready their weapons as you slowly push the door open with your shoulder, her hand readied at the hilt of your sword.

As you open the door, you are treated to a room filled with various books and paintings laid out across the floor. At the end of the room sits a literal mountain of tomes, atop it sitting a man in a black cloak, tome in hand, giving a low chuckle to himself. The walls are defaced with various scribbles, documenting nonsensical rants in black ink.

"He was wrong, he was a fool..." the man mutters to himself as he closes the book shut. "Settan didn't know what he was doing, and I told him so. What did he do? He locked me away and threw the key! But I saw it! The showed me his downfall, and so to did it come to pass! The reign of Settan has come to an end! The reign of Fumiro has begun, and I will restore The Order of the Awakened to it's former glory! I've seen it! It's been foretold in the stars!"

The man's lost his mind. He's taken over as the leader of a dead order, an even deader order now that you've cut through half of their members.

"What's this? Intruders!" Fumiro shouts as he looks on at your group. He squints his eyes at you. "I've seen you... you were in the stars! Well, you'll never take me alive! I'll fight to defend this order with my last breath!"

He readies the tome in his hand, likely ready to cast some incantation. The man must be a mage, which means he's dangerous. Luckily, thanks to your cautious attitude, your group have their weapons drawn and ready, prepared to act first. You could probably get a few hits in before he even tries his first strike, seeing as you've got the drop on the maniac.

Here is hoping that the likely success of Mayu compounds, not to mention the decent stats in the required fields of Risa and Kiriko in taking this guy down.

I think this is a fine system. Because there is still the equal amount to fail. Especially with each dice being one for each character. Kiriko still almost hard failed, after all.

Mayu gives you a nod as she draws her sword and charges at Fumiro with her Katana. You remember earlier that she said you might have considered her role redundant as it's so similar to yours, and yet here you are, incapacitated and in need of her help.

Mayu leaps up and swings her blade downwards, with intention of slicing Fumiro in two. He waves his hand as a stack of books rise up from the pile to create a wall, shielding him from the attack. Mayu doesn't let up however, as she breaks through the book shield like it was nothing, chasing Fumiro around the room swinging her Katana. Risa joins the fray, providing covering fire for Mayu, leaving Fumiro closed in and distracted, forcing him to spend all of his focus on throwing up shields and blocking Mayu's attacks, and very little time to try and fight back.

With all of Fumiro's focus firmly on Mayu and Risa's all-out assault, Kiriko sees her opportunity. Spinning her daggers with fancy flair, she rushes into action and picks the right moment for her to teleport behind him, readying her daggers before jamming them right into his shoulder blades. Fumiro screams out in pain and drops his shields, allowing Mayu to slash him large across the chest. Crying out once more, Fumiro throws his hands out and screams a quick incantation, which sends the mountain of tomes flying out into every single direction of the room, putting a stop to the attack on him as the room is flooded in a rain of paper. You're almost buried under a stack momentarily until the storm of tomes die down, and you see a bleeding Fumiro standing in the middle of the room, hobbling and doubled over.

"No, it can't be this easy..." he mutter. "I am The Order of The Awakened, and we will rise again!"

He weakly raises his hand, likely preparing another incantation he has memorised, but it looks like it's a last ditch effort on his part. It would only take one move to finish him off.

As Fumiro raises his hand, Tami is quick to react, drawing an arrow from her quiver, and within less than a seconds time, she pulls it back and sets it free. The arrow shoots forward and finds it's mark, piercing directly through Fumiro's throat. His eyes as wide open as his mouth, Fumiro is only able to let out some disgusting, bubbly gurgles as blood pours from his neck. His eyes a sad mix of fear, anger and confusion, he collapses to the ground, dead.

You hesitantly glance over at Tami as she fixes her braided hair, placing it over her shoulder. "Wow Tami, that was... uhh..."

"Effective?" Tami interjects with a confident smile. "No problem!"

You were going to say something more along the lines of 'cold' or 'brutal'... but she isn't wrong. The man was a huge threat, and there was no way he would have ever allowed you to keep him alive. Just because the manner it was carried out was more bloody than you expected doesn't make it any less cruel.

"I'm wary of how naturally killing comes to her..." Anri mutters, standing behind you. You suppose he considers her to be a prime suspect now.

"Well, now that he's taken care of, I guess it's time to find this tome," Risa states. "And... of course there's like a thousand tomes in this room. Fantastic."

"Well, no use waiting around," you reply. "Time to start looking."

You trawl through book after book after book, but none of them match the description of a dark purple cover with a lion on the front. You still flick through the pages of each book you see, out of curiosity, and find that they're all filled with mostly unintelligible scribbles and ranting, likely written by Fumiro himself. While you can't make out most of what it says, and even the stuff that's legible doesn't make any sense, but you begin to see repeated references to several things. Constant mentions of a Young Dragon, A Shadow of a Shadow, A Man with no past, and A Girl with no mind. Whatever it's supposed to mean, you have no clue.

"I'm not seeing this tome anywhere!" Kiriko groans in exhaustion. "Why did this place have to be filled with books!"

"Wait, I think I found it!" Tami exclaims. "Oh... wait, no... this one's light purple with a bear on the front, never-mind."

"A book as important as the one you're seeking..." Anri mutters. "Do you think it would simply be left her among hundreds of others."

"Well, something tells me this Fumiro wasn't the most orderly type," Risa replies.

"Still..." Anri ponders. "I don't think the tome you seek is among these here."

"Okay, if I've learned one thing from mystery novels, it's that there's always a secret compartment that will be opened up when you pull a book from a shelf, or pull back a wall-light," you explain. "Oh, or bricks in the wall that look just slightly out of place. Be on the look-out for all of those."

You and the group spread among the room, looking for anything suspicious that could possibly open up a secret passage. Tami tentatively tugs on a wall lamp, but only succeeds in tearing it off the wall. Kiriko seems to just be pressing her hand against every brick in the wall in rapid succession, hoping one of them will eventually cave in.

Your attention meanwhile is drawn to one of the paintings lying on the floor. A painting of a man with white hair, and a smile that is equal parts cheerful as it is oddly sinister. You look down to see a nameplate in the frame of the painting, the name "Settan" etched into it. Settan... yes, he was the previous leader of The Order. Perhaps also it's founder? You have no idea how far back the order goes. You find yourself turning the painting over, and tearing the back of it out. A-ha... you knew the painting felt just a little too heavy in your hands. Stuffed inside the back of the frame, is a thick, dark purple tome with a lion proudly displayed on the front.

"Guys, I've got it!" you exclaim, as you rise to your feet. "I found it!"

"You found it?" Kiriko asks, as a smile spreads across her face. "Yahoo! We found it!" Kiriko yells, hopping up and down, jumping onto Mayu with a hug as she's the closest to her.

You chuckle as you hold the book up. "Come on, let's get this back to the academy"

The six of you all leave the Order's base behind and begin to walk through the forest, relieved that your mission was a complete success. As you walk along, Kiriko tugs on your sleeve. "Kaz, can you slow down, I need to talk to you about something..."

"Still celebrating our success?" you ask, as you turn your head around. Apparently not, as you see her smile has faded. Whatever she wants to talk about, it's serious. "What's wrong?"

"Kaz... Tami killed four people tonight," Kiriko mutters. "Not demons... people. Actual living people. And she wasn't the only one. I know we had to, but... what bothers me was how okay a lot of us were with it. Tami was fine with it, Mayu was fine with it, Risa was fine with it... and for a second, I was fine with it."

She's not wrong. You were so caught up in adrenaline you didn't even realise. You took human lives tonight. Evil demon worshipping humans, but still humans. You never thought something like that would come so... easy to you. You suppose when you grow so used to mowing down hordes of demonic enemies every night, it becomes hard for your brain to make the distinction between your kills.

"Kaz..." Kiriko hesitantly asks. "Are we... monsters?"

>Of course not, Kiriko. It's not pretty, but we did what we had to.

>In a way, we are. But our enemies are even greater monsters, remember that.
Glad this came up as well, when we started mowing down minions on our way to the hideout I thought it felt odd given that C2 had qualms about killing people at first but C1 were just charging in.
Still not clear why C2 didn't do this themselves, other than plot contrivance to give us something to do

>Of course not, Kiriko. It's not pretty, but we did what we had to.
>Give her a comforting hug.

As you speak, you pull Kiriko in close for a tight hug as you speak. Instinctively, she wraps her arms around you and reciprocates. "I know Kaz... but it still feels so... horrible."

"I know, but we don't have much choice. It's a bad situation, and I'd rather we didn't have to kill anyone... but those weren't regular people. They were killers who wanted to bring about a demon apocalypse. I still feel bad, but we had to take them down."

"Yeah... I guess you're right..." Kiriko sighs, as she pulls away. "But I just don't know if I can get over this feeling. It's so awful. It's the worst feeling in the world."

"You're strong Kiriko," you reply. "You won't let this affect you too much. You'll be okay."

As you begin to move again, you see Mayu walking back to catch up with you. "Hurry up, you're falling behind," she mutters. "Kiriko... are you okay? What's wrong?"

Kiriko shakes her head. "It's nothing. I'll be fine."

Mayu looks at Kiriko with concern. "Okay... come along then."

Mayu gives you a quick glance and a nod, before turning and walking on. You pick up your pace in order to catch up with the rest of the group. As you exit the forest, you see Anri approaching a motorcycle he left hidden under a bunch of leaves. "Not coming with us?" you ask.

"Not right now," Anri replies. "I have to conduct some more independent research of my own. But now that my investigation is now also your investigation... I might see you in class tomorrow."

>Express concern for his wound

"An official member... no," Anri shakes his head. "Still... we're allies now, for the time being. I'll be sure to drop by as soon as I can, even if it is just to return your sports jacket."

You glance at your red coat wrapped gently along Anri's shoulder. "That cut was pretty bad. You going to be okay?"

Anri nods. "I'll be fine. Don't worry about me."

You don't believe him, but you doubt it's a point worth arguing at the moment. "See you around, Anri. Be careful. As soon as your done with whatever you need to do, pop into the nurse's office to have her look at that wound."

Anri nods as he revs up the motorcycle, and moves out onto the road. He's moving at a steady pace due to his weak arm limiting his steering, but it isn't long before he becomes a speck on the distance.

"You're very eager to invite people to the club," Risa remarks.

You shrug. "We want as many members as we can, don't we? Besides, it would be nice to have at least one other guy in the group. I'm starting to feel singled out. Do you have a problem with Anri?"

Risa shakes her head. "Not a fan. Asks too many questions, all the while coming off as very suspicious himself."

"I can see why you don't like him," you mutter. "You hate answering questions about yourself."

It's early morning as you reach the school gates, and the sun is just about dawning. As you step through the gates, you're met with a familiar face by the school wall.

"Io?" you ask, grabbing her attention. Was she waiting her for your group to arrive back? Did she hear you were going on a dangerous mission and get worried? Being Io, you doubt it. She has little regard for anyone who isn't named Io Tanaka. "What are you doing up so early?"

Io chuckles. "Well you know how it is, an early rise is the path to success. A 6am rise leaves me with more hours in the day to profit!"

She sounds even more disingenuous than usual when she laughs, as she catches a look at your arm. "Kazuma, you're hurt!"

She rushes to take a look at your arm. "This is a pretty nasty burn..." she mutters. "Oh, I have a salve in my storeroom that'll help with this. It should clear your ailment right up!"

"Yeah?" you ask. "And how much yen is that going to set me back?"

Io slowly gazes up at you, her large round brown eyes meeting yours. "It's free... Kaz, you're hurt. I... I'm not going to charge you for that..."

>Oh... sorry.
>Well, you can forgive me for being suspicious.

>Oh... sorry.

"It's okay..." Io hangs her head low. "I get it... let's just get you that salve, okay? That burn must be killing you!"

"Well, I should really deliver this tome fir-"

"No!" Io exclaims as she takes you by the wrist of your un-burned arm. "Your arm looks like grilled bacon! You can spare a second to get something on that, can't you?"

Io drags you up to the first year dorm building, and she rushes inside her room. "Okay, okay, let me see... where did I put that, ah, here!"

Io rushes out of her room with a small white tub. "Hold out your smoky arm," she smiles, as you comply and she dips her fingers into the salve and begins to rub it up and down your arm. The salve is cold at the touch, but it definitely works to soothe the burning sensation as she runs her fingers gently up and down your arm. "Had me so worried..." she mumbles as she rubs it in.

"I don't get you, Io..." you blurt out.

"I'm sorry?" she says, looking up at you.

"I don't get what makes you... you. I don't know who you are," you explain. "On the one hand, you're this sweet friendly beautiful girl who genuinely seems to care about me..."

"Why, thank you!" Io giggles.

"But on the other, you're a liar and a cheat who can't stop trying to scam people."

Io stares at you, biting her bottom lip without saying a single word, likely out of shame.

"You can't be both those things," you say. "You just can't."

Io hangs her head low and sighs. "You're right, Kazuma... one of those isn't what I am. Only one of those is me."

A tense silence fills the air. Io closes the tub of salve and scratches her arm nervously. "Uhh... you should go deliver that book now. And be sure to see the nurse... I kinda exaggerated the effects of this thing, it just soothes the pain a little. I'm sure Tekina has something better than I do."

You nod as you exit the dorms and make your way towards the clubroom, where Saki is likely waiting. As you do, you find Mayu walking in the same direction through the corridor. Against your better judgement, you hurry your pace to walk alongside her.

"That was pretty crazy tonight, huh?" you ask, trying to make conversation.

Mayu walks along without answering. Eventually though, she speaks up. "We should become friends."

You almost fall to the floor in shock. "What?!" you ask, raising an eyebrow. "I thought you hated me!"

Mayu nods. "I do... but Kiriko is important to me. And you're more important to Kiriko than anyone. For her sake, I should pretend to like you."

>Kiriko's two best friends don't need to get along themselves. You don't need to pretend to like me.

>Why pretend? I think you'd actually like me if you ever gave me a shot.

Mayu looks at you, examining you for a while, before shaking her head. "I do not think we will. And I would appreciate it if you didn't flirt with me like that."

You frantically shake your head. "Flirt?! I wasn't flirting!"

"I feel like you were. I don't like it when you flirt with me."

What? Where is this train of thought coming from? "When have I ever flirted with you?"

Mayu pauses, counting off instances on her fingers. "Let me think... there was just now, there was when you called me a productive member of the team, and let's not forget the instance at the school dance when you told me that I looked nice in my dress."

"What? Those were just compliments!" you remark. "Complimenting you doesn't mean I'm flirting with you."

"I was under the impression that compliments, particularly those regarding a person's looks were a sign of romantic interest. I always tell Kiriko that she has nice hair..."

"Ah, so you are interested in Kiriko in that way?" you smirk.

"No. Be quiet," Mayu frowns.

"Hey, you said it. Compliments are a sign of interest, and you compliment Kiriko all the-"

"Shut up," Mayu interjects. "I ask you to drop the subject, or I will terminate our friendship."

"Before it even begins?" you reply. "Ouch. Whatever, I don't care that much either way. As long as you're nice to Kiriko, I'm happy."

"As long as others are kind to Kiriko, I'm happy too," Mayu states.

You smile. "Hey... we agreed on something. What do you know?"

Mayu's expression remains unchanged. "Well, I would expect as much. We're friends now, we have to agree on some matters."

You make your way up a flight of stairs and down a corridor in order to reach the clubroom. You know on it gently, as you hear Saki call out from inside.

"Come on in!"

You open the door wide as you see Saki leaning against the desk, and Reiji looking out the window. "Did you get it?" Saki asks.

You hold the tome up with a smile. "Yep. We've got it right here."

You toss Saki the tome, and she almost drops it as she clumsily reaches to grap it. "Gah! Warn me when you throw that! You caught me off guard!"

Reiji sighs, as he makes his way over to Saki and takes the tome off her hands. "Yes, this is the one. This tome contains exactly the incantation we need. I'll look through it, and I'll have our next course of action set out by tomorrow."

"So, what did you guys get up to while we were doing the dirty work?" you ask.

Saki beams a proud smile. "We were running a little investigation of our own in the Darkworld! Which brings me to a very important matter... hey, where did she get to?"

"She's on top of the bookshelf," Reiji sighs, adjusting his glasses.

"Alice, get down from there!" Saki yells.

Alice? You turn your head, and sure enough... on lying stretched out on the bookshelf is that very strange girl with a single braid in her blonde hair. She pouts as she hops down to the floor, as she points at you. "I remember you! You scared me that one time!"

"Uhh... sorry about that, it was a real misunderstanding," you reply, scratching the back of your head, before turning your attention back to Saki. "So, you found Alice?"

"Well... she actually came to us. Apparently, her demon sensed that we were reaching the end of our search, and knew we would need her help to bring Ryoji back from this place with the twelve stones. And so... she came back to us."

"That's right!" Alice smiles. "We're going to save Ryoji... or kill Ryoji. Both are very likely!"

Well... you don't like the sound of that.

>Player Question
This episode featured what was basically a "Tutorial level" for the new way I've elected to make action scenes feel more involved, where in the past it's been a simple matter of "Action happens, roll to not die", I'm adding more of a tactics element with more of a party system along with a few modifiers to rolls and DC's for skill checks that are dependant on a characters physical condition and stats. Nothing really number crunchy, but something make it a bit more in-depth. Same goes for the dungeon crawling in this episode. Thoughts on these additions, and any suggestions to further improve them?

>Bonus Player Question
Time to get it out of the way. Shipping. A constant of this Quest. Do you have any non-Kaz based ships for the Class 1 crew? Any crackships among them? Share with the thread.
>>
>>484105
That so? Well, doesn't change my statement
>>
>>484108
PQ
I really like the system, and honestly I don't know if it really needs much improvement. Increasing the number of dice rolled doesn't inherently mean we're going to be decreasing the difficulty. Let it run for a while before you see need to change it.

>BPQ
No shipping yet, far too early in the game for that.
>>
>>484108
I'd suggest having some example tactics for the vote, but making clear that better options exist, so the quest doesn't just freeze if no one can think of a plan.

Also KazXIo for healing
>>
>>484108
>PQ
It's a pretty good system, let's us be a bit more flexible with encounters and it doesn't fuck us as hard when we roll badly like earlier.

>Bonus PQ
I'll wait until we meet the rest of the Class 1 cast before I start making proper ships.

But we need to break up IoXSUFFERING.
>>
>>484108
>Player Question
I was pleasantly surprised with the write in parts. It was easier to just command a few characters than being forced to write in a line like some quests do.
>BPQ
Just a few that people have already mentioned like RisaXRoka and AmayaXIsamu, maybe Kuin and Gado if I can't steal her away.
>>
>>484108
>PQ
Second this idea
>>484118
maybe give a rough outline of an option or two available, if nothing else just to help with who we have to deploy and their capabilities until everyone is up to speed on exactly who is who and does what in C1.

>BPQ
KazXAtasuke obviously oh wait you wanted none-Kaz ships... honestly too soon, heck until we start to get people to open up and reveal their non-douch sides I'd happily ship half the class off to the darkworld for good. I'm sure we'll see the good (or at least better) sides of people in due course, maybe then a few pairings will work themselves out.
>>
>>484108
PQ: In the context of less crunch-based quests like this one, I don't really have any problems with the system.

Though maybe make the tactics have more concrete bonuses to dice rolls? I read a quest once where the MC chose between three different types of actions, and each action had an advantage over an enemy action of a different category; kind of like the FE weapon triangle, if you've ever played those games.

BPQ: GadoxKuin. I'm a sucker for bodyguard romances.
>>
Dammit, missed the action

>>484108
>PQ
New system seems to be working, seems a bit better fit for Kaz as he can actually fight unlike Ryoji
>BPQ
RokaxHanako & AtasukexSae: I've got a serious boner for odd couples. Though frankly Atasuke's so great he should get to bang everyone in the class; I'm going to be seriously crushed it he's evil.

Tami for Kaz Waifu, always go for the woman who can shoot a wizard in the throat
>>
>>484214
>New system seems to be working, seems a bit better fit for Kaz as he can actually fight unlike Ryoji

I can definitely see it working for Ryoji too, considering that most battles in Season 1 basically amounted to Ryoji giving orders to the others.
>>
>>484214
>I'm going to be seriously crushed it he's evil.
Or we could just join the dark side for he ultimate shipping derailment, Saki would be on board if it means being reunited with her dear Ryoji, and there's probably only a few other pure good people that we'd have to eliminate on the way.
