Far off, nestled in an otherwise small Japanese town lies the Dark Gate Academy. An institution of tremendous size, the Academy holds a long kept secret. Unknown to the outside world, this unseemly town is home to a tear in our reality. A gate between our world and a bizarre dimension known as the Darkworld. The inhabitants of this hellish world breach this gate and attempt to flood into our reality and spread throughout the world on a regular basis. However, the Dark Gate Academy is home to students of truly extraordinary abilities. The ability to sense the presence of these evil Darkworld creatures, and defeat them in combat, sending them back through the gate.

They cannot close the rift between our world and the Darkworld, but the students and staff of Dark Gate Academy have dedicated their lives to using their amazing powers to hold back the darkness that plagues our world, even if it costs them their lives. They have risen up to the challenge and in secret have become great heroic defenders of the world as we know it.

For many years, Dark Gate Academy has held back the forces of the Darkworld, kept this unspeakable evil contained within their walls. But a dark cloud approaches, and times are about to change. A new chapter in the tale of Dark Gate Academy is about to begin.

“Kazuma... it's all a lie.”

Flames surround you, your vision strained and obscured by the sheer heat, as your father stands before you, a desperate and stern expression on his face.

“Dad? What are you-”

Your father holds out his, as a small glowing blue orb floats above his outstretched palm.

“I need you to take this, Kazuma. It's the key, the key to revealing the truth.”

“I don't under-”

“Just take it, Kazuma!” your father screams, as the flames envelop him, and he disappears within the hellish fire.

“Dad... Dad, no! Daaaaaaaaaaaaaad!”

Your eyes shoot open, as you awaken in a cold sweat. You feel your seat beneath you rumble and hear some faint buzzing from the headphones wrapped around your neck as you become re-adjusted to your surroundings. You must have fallen asleep on the train. You clutch your necklace tight in your hand. A blue stone lies at the end of a string. It was given to you by your father, but not nearly in such dire circumstances as your dream depicted. No, it was simply a birthday gift from when you turned seven years old.

You've been travelling for hours now. Your destination? A small hillside town by the name of Dakugeto. A rather unassuming place, the town's one notable aspect is that it plays home to the Dakugeto institute of higher education. More commonly referred to as Dark Gate Academy, it's where you're about to begin your first day of studies as a high school student. It's also where your father worked as a teacher... until he disappeared three years ago.

Dark Gate Academy holds a secret, one that has never been hidden from you. The staff and students of the academy are not normal humans. They are individuals who have innate abilities that simply need to be awakened. And they use those abilities to fight off the dark forces that lie within the school. While this little factoid has been kept hidden from the world at large, it's always been known to you. Your father is Kankuro Arai, a man heralded as the finest combatant that Dark Gate Academy ever saw. There was no demons the stood at the end of his blade and lived. Nothing could stop him... until he vanished. Killed in action, they said. But no body was found. You know better than that. You know that your father couldn't have just been killed within the Darkworld like he was nothing. No... he's still in there. You know it. And now three years later, you'll be attending the very same academy he worked. Soon, you'll be entering the Darkworld yourself... and you're going to find him. You're going to bring him back.

Your name is Kazuma Arai, and this is Day 1 of your quest.

“Another nightmare?” the voice in the seat opposite yours asks.

You turn your head to answer. “Yeah, I guess that's what it was.”

The black haired girl tilts her head and smiles. “Aww... you want to tell your big sis Kiriko all about it?”

Kiriko Maita. Despite her jokes, she's not your sister, but she may as well be. The two of you have only been best friends since you were both in diapers. You and her have rarely spent any time apart, and now you'll be attending the academy together.

“No, I'm fine...” You shake your head as you look out the window of the moving carriage. “We're almost there.”

“How do you know?” Kiriko laughs. “You've only been here once, when you were about eight!”

“Yeah, but I remember every detail of that visit,” you reply. “Look over there, my dad took me to that lake when we there. I've told you the story about-”

“When you were attacked by a duck?” Kiriko finishes your sentence. “Only about a hundred times! You'd think you were proud of it!”

You nod. She's not wrong... you've always been eager to passionately relay every scene from the time you visited your dad at the academy. You were always obsessed with the mystique and presence of the academy... and now it's where you'll be spending the next year. You couldn't be happier.

“Well, you're lucky we're the only two in this carriage,” Kiriko explains. “You were tossing, turning, mumbling your dads name in your sleep... it would have been pretty embarrassing if others saw you like that.”

Kiriko stretches her arms in the air and lets out a quick groan as she adjust her back, before popping out of her chair. “Oh, I'm so excited!” she exclaims, changing the subject. “Can you imagine? We're finally going to be students of Dark Gate Academy. Our parents have been telling us about this place for years but now the dream is real! I've been pinching myself every fifteen minutes just to make sure this isn't actually a fantasy!”

Kiriko has always had enough excitement in her to do the both of you. You're not one to bounce up and down the walls when something excites you. For the most part, you like to stay chilled and laid back, usually listening to music. Despite the constant teasing from Kiriko because you “try too hard to look cool” you haven't changed up your style. You just roll with the punches.

The train pulls up at it's next stop. Your stop. The town of Dakugeto. You and Kiriko grab your bags and step off onto the platform. The Academy is still a good walk away, standing at the top of a hill overlooking the town, like a haunted mansion from an old horror flick.

“There it is!” Kiriko smiles. “That's where we start our new life!”

“And we're we start looking for my dad,” you mutter.

Kiriko looks at you, an intense guilt in her eyes. She hesitates to speak. “Kaz... I have to ask...”

“Yeah?” you reply.

Kiriko pauses, her hand held close to her mouth. “Do... do you think... the Darkworld has dinosaurs?”

You blink. “Uhh... what?”

Kiriko giggles nervously, and scratches the back of her head. “Y-you know, dinosaurs! The Darkworld's supposed to be filled with all kinds of monsters right? Well, do you think any of them are huge dinosaurs? Because if we see a t-rex roaming around in there, I'm definitely going to try riding on its back!”

As Kiriko continues to chuckle nervously, something tells you that wasn't the question she was originally going to ask. Whatever, better to just humour her for now. “I don't know... maybe.”

“A-awesome!” Kiriko laughs, before looking back at the Academy. “So... you ready?”

>Yeah. I want to get there as early as possible.
>Whoa, what's your hurry? Let's look around town for a while.

>Yeah. I want to get there as early as possible.

"I figured," Kiriko smirks. "I was just a little worried that now that we're practically standing at the school's gate, your feet would get cold."

"Come on, when have I ever been the type of guy to chicken out of something?" you ask.

"I'm not calling you a chicken!" Kiriko chuckles, "But you can get pretty lazy."

You can't be bothered with arguing that point as the two of your begin your trick through the town and up to the top of the hill. It's incredibly steep, and half the time you were uncertain if you were going to fall back down, or simply just collapse from exhaustion.

Eventually, the two of you make it to the School Gate, and a small smile forms on your face. This is it, your first day. A huge moment for you, and you've got to make an appropriate entrance. Your headphones still hanging by your neck, you pick them up and place them over your ears, hoping for just to right track to play as you step foot into Dark Gate Academy.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UNYRfbT8QUU

-No, not that.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_iK5xd7Tl9U

There, that's better. You and Kiriko swagger through the school gates, your bags slung over your shoulder, as you saunter up to the main building entrance. You pass by the running tracks, where a blonde girl in a baseball cap is running alongside a giant blue-haired girl. You pass through the main courtyard, as you see a pink haired girl running around in a pirate costume, and a pair of delinquents hanging out by one of the benches. An interesting looking bunch of people, just as you expected the academy to attract.

As you step through the front entrance, you are greeted by a bored looking girl with white hair. "You're the first year students, I take it?"

"Yep, that's us!" Kiriko exclaims.

"Most other students have already arrived," the girl explains. "In fact, you missed the beginning of year assembly."

"Well, we've travelled a long while," you explain, removing your headphones. "And besides, we already know about everything that assembly covered. We're already aware of the Darkworld."

The girl stares blankly at you, unimpressed. "My name is Nina," she adds. "Nina Nagata. I'm in Class 3. It's my duty to guide the two of you to your homeroom, and then out relationship will cease. If you have questions, ask them as we walk."

>Why so distant? No offence, but you sound dead inside.

>Class 3? Guess you've been around the block a few times. You ever get scared?

"No, I don't."

You weren't expecting such a blunt and straightforward answer to come from her. "Really?" you ask. "You're telling me you've never been scared? Even when surrounded by demons?"

"Yes, that is what I'm telling you."

"I don't believe you!" Kiriko exclaims. "You're bound to have seen some people die by your third year!"

You shake your head. Kiriko means well, but she's always been very impulsive. She rarely thinks before speaking.

"I have," Nina answers. "Only eight people remain in my class."

"Woah," Kiriko mutters. "That's rough... but you're telling me even with that being the case, you're not scared of being the next one to go?"

"No."

Again with the blunt answers. "I have to ask," you chime in. "How? You're pretty calm about all of this. Even with nerves of steel I'm sure most would be terrified. What keeps you from panicking or worrying about death?"

Nina turns her head to face you. "Because I already died a long time ago."

Before you can ask her what she means by that, she stops in front of a door. "This is it. This is your homeroom for the next year."

Nina turns around and makes her way down the hallway in a rush. "Uhh... thanks," you answer as she walks off. "I guess I'll see you around!"

"No you won't," she mutters as she turns a corner and disappears.

Weird. But then again, you always knew that this place attracted weird people.

You shrug your shoulders as you open the door, and you're greeted by a red-haired man in a red coat at the front of the classroom. "Ah, these must be our two late-comers! Just in time for Class!"

You and Kiriko step into the classroom, as the man examines the two of you. "So you must be Kiriko Maita, and you're... Kazuma As-As... wow. Y-you... you're the kid who's dad was the... guy."

"Uhh..." you mumble, raising an eyebrow. "Yeah? I guess?"

"S-sorry, it's just..." the man mumbles. "Your father took me for classes when I attended. He... he was as great as teacher as he was... absolutely terrifying. Oh boy..."

The man is already wiping a lot of nervous sweat from his brow. This guy is supposed to be a teacher? This guy is supposed to be your teacher?

>Let's not make a big deal of it. I'm just here to learn.

The teacher nervously wipes his brow as he points you and Kiriko to your seats. "Okay, of course, I'm not going to make a big deal of how your father was the greatest fighter in the academy's history."

As you make your way to you chair, the teacher turns to address the rest of the class. "That... that goes for all of you too. Kazuma's father may be the greatest fighter in the history of the academy, but that doesn't mean you should treat him any different. He already has lot to worry about when it comes to living up to his father, who was the greatest fighter in the history-I can't stop talking... uhh..."

The man giggles nervously as he begins to pace, making his way over to you. "I am v-very sorry Kazuma, I'll stop bringing up your hero dad starting right... now. Okay?"

"Okay," you sigh, rolling your eyes. What a joke this guy is.

"Cool..." the man breathes a sigh of relief, before offering out his fist. "Pound it?"

You stare at his knuckles in confusion. "Pound it?"

The teacher stares at you, then back at his fist, then back at you. "Do... do kids not pound it anymore? I thought that was the cool... Okay, who's ready to learn?"

The man awkwardly clears his throat as he makes his way to the whiteboard, pulling out a marker. "Okay, I will be your homeroom teacher for the year. My name is Takeshi Shusaku..."

As soon as he begins to write his name on the board, the marker falls from his hand and rolls under his desk as he only has one letter written. "Uhh... but my friends just call me T!" he exclaims with a nervous chuckle, trying to save face. "And you kids can call me that! Because I don't want you to think of me as your teacher... I want you all to think of me as a pal! A buddy! Just good ol' T! Uhh... please don't call me that... anyway, as your buddy, don't be afraid to ask me anything you want!"

Next to every hand shoots up in the classroom. Takeshi picks out a blue-haired girl near the front. "Yes, you?"

"Umm... are we going to die?" the girl asks.

Takeshi's eyes widen. "W-wow... just cutting to the chase, huh? Well... to attend this academy is to take on a very important responsibility, and with that responsibility comes an element of danger... uhh, next question?"

Takeshi picks a brown-haired girl, casually leaning back in her chair. "Seriously though," the girl begins, "We're going to die, right?"

"I... oh boy..." Takeshi mumbles to himself, sweating profusely.

For some reason, you feel compelled to save this trainwreck. Maybe stand up and say something.

>Nobody's going to die as long as I'm here. I've been preparing for this my whole life.
>Yeah, a lot of you are going to die. This isn't easy work.

>Nah, don't say anything. Just sit back and tune it all out.

You aren't going to deal with this crap. You've got nothing to worry about, so it's better for you to just sit back in your chair, put your headphones on and just chill out until it's all settled with.

"Okay... I understand this must be very stressful for you," Takeshi explains. "I was scared too on my first day. I actually peed my pants! Oh... I shouldn't have said that..."

There's a few snickers among the students as Takeshi shakes his head and continues. "Anyway, we have a school counsellor on staff, and... well, he's a lot more equipped to talk about this stuff than me! So, does anyone have any question not related to horrible trauma?"

A pint-sized green-haired girl at the very front raises her hand.

"Yes, Kuin?" Takeshi asks.

"Why was I placed in the first chair?" She asked in an excited and forceful tone. "Does this mean I'm the best? Oh, does this mean I'm class leader!"

Takeshi scratches the back of his head. "Well actually, your seating is arranged by your overall class score, which is determined 50% by your academic rating, 25% by your combat rating, and another 25% by your behaviour and attendance. And since we don't really have any scores for you yet, we're just assigning you by your grades in your entrance exams. You scored highest, so-"

"I'm the leader then!" Kuin interrupts, before pumping her fist. "Yes!"

She leans over and reaches into her bag before pulling out a black cape which she drapes around her shoulders. "Huh, why do you have th-" Takeshi begins, but it's too late to get through to her as she already stands atop her desk.

"You heard the man!" She declares. "I'm in charge around here! My name is Kuin Sugisata, and I promise to be a kind and benevolent ruler to you all! Now, I'm in need of guards to act as my security!"

"Uhh... we're in the middle of class..." Takeshi mumbles, unable to stop her.

"You there!" Kuin yells, pointing at an introspective and rather muscular looking boy with dark hair. "What's your name?"

"Gado," the boy replies in a gruff voice. He looks and sounds about ten years older than he actually is.

"Gado, I select you as guard number one!" Kuin declares.

"Whatever," he shrugs.

"And for guard number two... I pick... you!" she yells, pointing in your direction. "If your dad's so great, then you must be a big deal yourself! Defend you ruler!"

You simply zone her out as you keep your headphones on.

"Don't ignore me!" she yells, stamping her foot. "Ignoring your queen is an offence punishable by dea-Whoa!"

Kuin loses balance on her desk, and begins to fall to the floor. As she does, however, Gado bursts from his chair and rushes to the front of class, catching her just before she lands.

"See?" Kuin laughs. "I know how to pick my guards, don't I?"

After that distraction, Takeshi breaths a sigh of relief. "Okay, now that that's over, we can get to learn-"

... And there's the bell.

"Oh boy..." Takeshi mumbles, as he shakes his head.

Well, looks like it's time for first break. You stand up from your desk as Kiriko pats you on the shoulder. "So Kaz, any plans for break?" she asks. "Pretty sure there'll be some cliques developing, so we gotta pick a place to be our territory pretty early. Then, if anyone steps to our turf, I can pull out my ninja skills on them!"

Hmm... where do you want to explore for first break? You probably don't have enough time to check out your dorms, so you'll have to stay contained to the main grounds.

>Let's hang out on the roof.

"The roof, huh?" Kiriko laughs. "What are we now, a pair of delinquents?"

You shrug. "I'd hardly call myself a delinquent. I don't know... the roof seems like fun."

Truth is, your dad told you that he would always go up on the roof during his free time. He always described it as being a nice, relaxing place where people rarely bothered you. Sounds like the kind of place you'd like to chill out at.

As you and Kiriko make your way up the steps and out into the fresh air of the roof, you can see that you're not the first person to get this idea. In fact, another member of your class beat you to it. Leaning against the roof's chainlink fence is a black haired boy in a black tracksuit, an intense stare in his yellow eyes and a permanent scowl on his face.

"Piss off," the boy grumbles as soon as he sees the two of you. "I got here first. This roof is my spot."

"Oh come on!" Kiriko protests. "You can't claim the entire roof for yourself! There's plenty of room for all of us to go a-Yikes!"

As the boy steps closer, you notice it... so does Kiriko, going by her exclamation of shock. The huge scar running down his face over the bridge of the nose. Of course, you have enough tact not to bring it up, especially when this guy already seems to have a short fuse. Kiriko on the other hand...

"Whoa, that scar is badass!" she exclaims with a smile.

"What?!" Roka yells at her. "Shut the hell up! I don't have any scars!"

"Uhh... right..." Kiriko mumbles in a confused tone. "Anyway, you still can't hog this place all to yourself!"

"If you want something, you're supposed to fight for it. I'm willing to fight to keep this spot," the boy explains.

You sigh. "Okay... uhh..."

"Roka."

"Roka, don't you think there's an easier way to settle this than by punching someone's lights out. We're not a bunch of violent apes."

Roka growls. "Typical talk from a weakling. If you not going to step up, then walk away."

"A game of... cards?" Roka asks.

"Yeah, we'll settle it over cards," you explain. "A simple friendly game. A lot less dumb than punches each-other in the face until one of us can't punch anymore, doesn't it?"

Roka folds his arms. "Whatever. And you have a pack of cards on you, right?"

"Well... Kiriko has some in her bag," you reply. "Right?"

"Yeeeeeaaah..." Kiriko mumbles. "Except..."

"Except what?" you ask.

"They aren't exactly poker cards," Kiriko admits. "They're children's trading cards."

"What?" you ask, "You told me you brought a deck of cards for the train ride!"

"I did!" Kiriko explains. "But I don't own any poker decks, and I have a lot of nostalgia for the silly kid's game, okay?"

"Whatever," you sigh. "It's still a card game. You ready to rock, Roka?"

"Only if you don't use a stupid line like that again," Roka replies. "Were you trying to sound cool? God, you annoy me already."

Kiriko pulls out the deck of cards and splits it in two, giving each of you one half. You sit down on the ground of the school roof and get to playing.

It doesn't take long for you to get the upper hand in the game, as it become quickly clear that Roka doesn't understand the rules.

"What the hell is this crap?" Roka grumbles under his breath. "The hell is this card? The hell does it do?"

"The cards have effects that are written on them," you explain. "All you have to do is read the card to understand-"

"Shut up!" Roka snaps, as he examines the card. He squints hard as he stares at it, struggling to decipher what is written. "Damn these stupid... pocket monster or whatever you call them."

"You only have to read the card," you repeat, noticing how badly he's struggling. "Wait a minute... you can read right?"

"Shut up!" Roka repeats. "Of course I can read!"

"Seems like you're struggling," you reply.

Roka grits his teeth, before snapping. He grabs both his deck and yours and tosses them over the fence, the cards blowing away in the wind. Kiriko lets out a cry of protest.

"No!" she screams. "What the hell! Those were mine! I've had them since I was ten!"

"I don't need to take judgement from you people!" Roka fires back. "You want the roof? Take the stupid roof! I'm out of here!"

Looks like you touched a nerve with his reading ability. Now that you think about it, he was at the very back of the class... being based on their exam scores, maybe he is illiterate, or at least has problems in class? He may have been accepted into the academy simply because he looks like he's a capable fighter. Regardless of whatever nerve you touched, Kiriko paid the price for it, as a piece of her childhood was scattered to the wind.

And there's the bell to class. Great. What a waste of everyone's time.

"I guess we should get moving," Kiriko sighs, as she looks out across the fence.

>Yeah, I guess we should.

>Class can wait. We've got some playing cards to recover.

"Wait, you mean it?" Kiriko asks. "Kaz, I don't think we're going to get those back."

"Hey, it's not that windy," you reply. "We might not get them all, but I'm sure we could at least recover so-"

You're unable to finish as Kiriko mobs you with a hug, squeezing your ribs tight. "Oh Kaz, you are so awesome!"

"Well," you laugh. "I try. Anything for my best friend, you know? Just leave it to your big bro Kaz."

Kiriko pouts and wags her finger. "Hey, don't get too full of yourself! You're still the younger one!"

The two of you make your way hurriedly down the steps and out into the courtyard. You're already a few minutes late for class, but that's never really mattered to you. You can survive running a little late.

"Ah, there's one!" Kiriko exclaims, tugging on your sleeve and pointing out a card on the ground. "Let's get it!"

You rush over to the card, as the wind begins to pick it up, sending it soaring and flying through the air as you continue to chase after it. Eventually, the trading card is plucked from the air not by you, not by Kiriko, but by a brown haired girl in a red get-up similar to Kiriko's and a headband around her forehead. She grabs it and places it atop an almost complete deck stacked in her left hand. Wow, did she really recover them that quick? Who is this girl.

"I assume these are yours?" the girl asks, handing the card over to Kiriko.

Kiriko gasps in wonder. "Yeah, they are! Thanks so much!"

"It's not an issue, Kiriko." The girl gives Kiriko a small smile. "That is your name, correct? Kiriko Maita? Takeshi-sensei mentioned your name in class."

"Yeah!" Kiriko grins. "Pleasure to meet 'cha! And you are?"

"Apologies," the girl replies. "My name is Mayu. Mayu Nakatoni."

She and Kiriko shake hands, as Mayu stares very intently at Kiriko. Not breaking eye contact at all. "Nice to meet you, Mayu," you decide to chime in.

Mayu's smile fades as she turns her head to address you. "And you are?"

"Kazuma..." you mumble. "Takeshi mentioned my name too..."

"He did?" Mayu replies with a blank face. "I must have forgotten."

Ouch, you're definitely getting the cold treatment from her. Mayu immediately warms up as she turns her attention back to Kiriko.

"Thanks for finding these!" Kiriko smiles. "I was so worried they were lost forever! I was panicking more than a cow reading the menu in a beef restaurant!"

"I'm sorry?" Mayu asks. "I don't understand. Why would a cow attend a beef restaurant?"

Kiriko raises an eyebrow. "Uhh..."

"Surely a barnyard animal wouldn't be allowed inside," Mayu mutters. "That's not even touching on a cow's inability to read any written language, or it's inability to sit in a restaurant booth."

"It's just a joke," Kiriko replies. "It doesn't have to make sense."

"Oh..." Mayu ponders. "I see. That was very humorous, Kiriko."

"Uhh... thanks?" Kiriko replies. "We should probably get to class. Come on!"

Kiriko runs ahead, as Mayu stares at her from behind. You begin walking side-by-side with her, but Mayu constantly changes her pace, speeding up and slowing down when necessary in order to keep her distance.

>I'm sorry. Do you not like me or something?

>If you like Kiriko, you can just ask her out. I don't think she's into other girls, though.

Mayu tilts her head and stares at you. "What are you talking about?"

"Well, you're staring at her like you've got a major crush," you reply.

"I've only just met her," Mayu explains, as serious as can be. "Why would you insinuate that I was romantically interested in her? Because I smiled? What a stupid notion."

"Okay, I guess I was jumping the gun a little," you reply, trying to defend yourself.

"Perhaps you should think before opening your mouth. It would allow you to filter all of the stupid comments that I'm sure are a regular occurrence for you."

Ouch, where the hell is this aggression coming from? What did you do to deserve this brow-beating. "Uhh, sorry."

"You should be," Mayu replies. "You should take example from your sister."

"Kiriko isn't my sister," you say.

"Whatever she is to you, she is kind and courteous, and you are not. She thanked me profusely for recovering those cards, while you still haven't had the decency to introduce yourself."

"But I did..." you protest. "My name is Kazuma..."

"It's a little late to tell me that now," Mayu shakes her head, as she rushes on, trying to catch up with Kiriko. It seems you were doomed to start when it came to her, and talking only made it worse. Maybe it was better if you didn't say anything at all.

You return to class late, though Takeshi doesn't even say anything about it. Seems he's running a pretty lax ship. He stumbles and fumbles through his next couple hours of teaching, and you zone him out until the bell rings for lunch.

"Hey Kaz!" Kiriko exclaims as soon as class ends. "Mayu invited me to come eat lunch with her in the courtyard!"

"Really?" you ask. "She invited us?"

"Well, she invited me," Kiriko explains. "But I don't think she'll have a problem with you coming along. I think she likes you!"

You glance over Kiriko's shoulder to see Mayu staring daggers at you and shaking her head.

"Ah, I see..." Kiriko winks, "You want to have another one of your lonely brooding sessions, right?"

"I don't brood!" you protest. "Stop saying I brood!"

Kiriko laughs. "Yeah, I'm sure all those time you act all super introspective and stare out windows isn't you trying to look cool and brooding."

"I don't do that!" you reply.

"Hey, don't let me stop you!" Kiriko stick out her tongue. "Maybe eventually a girl will actually come up to you because she thinks the whole lonely and thoughtful look is attractive!"

As Kiriko laughs, satisfied that she's teased you about girls at least once today, she hurries off with Mayu in order to grab lunch. At least she's making friends. It seems everyone around here had something against you. Is is the way you carry yourself? You may have come into the academy with a chip on your shoulder considering who your dad is, but you don't think you made it too obvious.

You wander through the school corridors, examining your surroundings. In the wake of this whole 'fitting into a new school' thing, you had almost forgotten the real reason this academy exists. Tonight, you'll be entering the Darkworld for the first time. A dimension filled with all sort of beasts and demons and unknown horrors... and it's also where your father has been trapped for three years.

You walk out of the main building and wander by the main gate. From there you see a blonde boy in what appears to be a white cloak and hood standing by the gate. You recognise him as a member of your class, and as you walk closer, you see that he's feeding a stray dog through the gate.

"Hey!" you call out, hoping to grab his attention. "How are you?"

The boy stares at you before shrinking her head further under his cloak. Seemingly shy, he scurries off back up to the main building before you can get any closer. Odd.

Just as you turn your back to the gate, you feel a hand being placed on your shoulder. Four long and slender fingers with the nails painted red creep onto you. Startled, you spin around to see a pale... boy? He has long dark hair and an ear-ring, and has a very slim and feminine face, but you feel certain that it's a boy that stand before you.

"Oh my, aren't you a handsome thing!" the boy laughs in an upper-class voice. "My apologies, but when I saw you in class earlier, I just knew I had to introduce myself! My name is Atasuke, and it is an honour among honours to make your acquaintance."

Atasuke grins wide as he takes your hand and kisses the back of it, as if he were a lord greeting a lady.

"Uhh..." you begin. "I'm Kazuma, by the way."

"Oh, I know!" Atasuke replies, grinning. "You think I would forget a name like that?"

"Well, I have to say, you're a lot friendlier than many of the others I've met so far," you mention. "In fact, I didn't expect anyone to get this friendly..."

"Oh, don't be so pessimistic!" Atasuke protests. "I'm sure you're bound to attract many fine bachelorettes, or bachelors if you're so inclined..."

Atasuke gives a playful wink, one you're not sure how to respond to.

"So, did you also see that kid by the gate?" you ask.

"Oh, you mean Taiyo?" Atusuke asks. "He's certainly an enigma. I've haven't been able to pull as much as a single word from him all day! And not for lack of trying. You're much more obliging, Kazuma."

"Thank you?" you reply, unsure if that's a compliment or not.

"No, thank you!" Atasuke fires back. "I'm sure the two of us will have a lot of fun together. Now, if you'll excuse me..."

Atasuke sniffs the air, as he pulls a red rose from his front pocket. "I'm catching a whiff of the perfume worn by none other than the blue-haired beauty of our class, Hanako Simada, and I absolutely must introduce myself!"

Atasuke wanders off, as you tilt your head in confusion as to what just happened. He's definitely a forward one... that's for sure.

Still, lunchtime isn't over yet, and you still have time to wander around. But where do you want to check out?

Now that you think about it, your stomach is rumbling. You haven't eaten since you were on the train this morning, and even then that was just a light snack.

You make your way towards the school cafeteria, but just as you enter, you are bowled over by a stampeding girl carrying a tray filled with various foodstuffs. The whole thing topples to the floor onto you, as you find yourself covered in rice, beef, chicken, noodles, doughnuts, mashed potatoes, and who knows what else. Who the hell orders all of this stuff at lunch.

Well, whoever she is, she sure isn't happy with you. "Watch where you're going you dipshit!" she screams, her eyebrow twitching, her face scrunched up in anger. "Don't you know how to enter a room! Come on, that was my second lunch you covered yourself in!"

"Excuse me?" you ask. "How is this my fault? You were the one running!" And did she just say second lunch? How much does this girl eat?

Turns out talking back to her was not the brightest of ideas as she reaches down and grabs you by the shirt, pulling you to your feet. "It's your fault because you're the idiot here, not me! You better have some way of making up for all this! Buy me another lunch! Twice the size of this one!"

"What? I don't have the money for that!" you protest, as she sets you back to your feet and you begin to wipe the food off of your body.

"You better think of something!" the girl yells back. "I'm going to be eating something in the next five minutes, and if you don't make up for this mess, that something is going to be you, got it?!"

>There's no way I'm buying you a second lunch. You bumped into me.

>Are... are you coming on to me?

The girl's eye twitches. "Am I... what?!"

"You know, coming on to me," you repeat. "Because it really sounds like you're trying to flirt."

Her face turns red as she lets out a sharp exhale from her nose. You could swear you see steam coming out as she does. "I'm going to kill you."

"That's going a little too far, don't you think?" you ask.

"You come in here, ruin my second lunch, and then try to say I'm flirting with you?!" the girl screams. "Nothing's too far! You're dead meat!"

She grabs you by the scruff of the neck and begins to drag you out of the cafeteria. Damn, she's freakishly strong, even before entering the Darkworld. She drags you to the main entrance of the school, kicks the door open and tosses you out, your face making a neat arrangement with the pavement.

"From now on, any time I see your stupid ass around, I'm going to toss you right out of here again! Got it?"

As you pick yourself off the ground and dust yourself off, now covered in gravel along with the various foodstuffs, you turn your head back to her. "Can I at least get a name?" you ask.

"My name is screw you!" she yells as she slams the door shut.

You let out a sigh as the bell rings for the end of lunch. Your stomach still rumbling, you pull the candy bar out of your pocket. It's all mashed and melted now after your altercation with the girl. Great.

You return to class, throwing on your headphones and ignoring any questions Kiriko had about your messy clothes. You zone out of the last part of classes for the day, and as the bell rings, you are given directions to the Class 1 dormitory.

"Aw man, looks like we won't be sharing a room," Kiriko sighs as you arrive.

"Did you think we would?" you ask. "Dark Gate Academy doesn't allow for mixed gender room-mates."

"Yeah..." Kiriko shrugs, "But I still let myself get hopeful. Oh well, it turns out I'll be crashing with Mayu for the year! Pretty sweet!"

"And I'll be crashing with some guy called Chuichi," you reply.

"That'd be me," a green haired boy approached you, a skateboard held under his arm. "Yo, I'm Chuichi Murkami. I'll be your room-mate for the year. Pretty sweet, huh?"

"Yeah, It's good to meet you," you reply. "I'm-"

>Why are you asking that all of a sudden? Trying to stake your claim on a girl?

Chuichi chuckles. "She wanted to eat you? Now that does sound like she was coming on to you."

"That's what I said!" you reply.

Chuchi smiles as he throws his hands up. "But yeah, you've got me. Just wanted to see if you were into any girls so we wouldn't be stepping on each-others toes. Because I gotta say, I'm really digging Mayu."

"Mayu?" you ask, thinking back to that cold, humourless girl... who was also very interested in Kiriko. "What attracts you to her?"

"Well, you see... I want to be the first to make her laugh," Chuichi explains.

"What?"

Chuichi smirks. "If you met her today, you'll have picked up on it already. Everyone else has. Mayu is super serious, and she doesn't understand any jokes. The key to a girls heart is through laughter, and I think that's truer than ever in her case. Also, I think she's pretty beautiful."

"Yeah, she is a looker," you reply. "Reminds me of something my dad said about the academy. He always told me that the true enigma of Dark Gate Academy was that no ugly people attended."

Chuichi laughs. "Wow, really? Guess this school just lures all the really attractive people in. You dad's words are doing wonders for my self-esteem at least!"

There's a brief pause between the two of you, before Chuichi speaks up once more. "So, your dad taught here, right?"

"Yeah," you reply. "I've known about the academy my whole life"

Chuchi smiles. "Then it's a real coincidence we got bunked together. I've known about all of this my whole life too."

"Really?" you ask.

Chuichi nods. "Yep! I grew up in Dakugeto. Lived in this village my whole life. Heck, you could probably see my family home from our window... well, you can't. But if our room was facing the other way, and there wasn't the main building in the way... then you could see it."

"So, I guess that means you're prepared for the Darkworld?" you ask. "Because we'll be going in there tonight."

"Can't wait," Chuichi replies. "What do you think we'll see in there?"

"Well yeah, that much is obvious," Chuichi replies. "But I was wondering if we might come across something else while we're there."

You shrug your shoulders. "Who knows? We'll just have to wait and see."

"We won't have to wait long," Chuichi remarks. "In fact, we should probably get moving to the gymnasium now. We need to gather there to be given weapons, it was all covered in-"

"The start of year assembly, I know." You throw your bag to the ground. "I might have missed it, but I know everything that gets covered in there. My dad was a teacher, remember?"

"No Kaz," Chuichi retorts. "Your dad was the teacher. There's a framed painting of him hanging outside the principal's office and everything!"

You wait for Kiriko and Mayu to get settled into their room, before the four of you make your way to the school gymnasium. The rest of Class 1 are there, accompanied by Takeshi. A brown haired girl is handing out equipment placed on a table. You grab a long katana from the table, still contained within a scabbard. You begin to draw it from its holdings, and the intense shine of the silver blade almost speaks to you.

"Like what you see, handsome?" the brown haired girl smirks. "Well, that swords all yours, for the measly fee of 3000 yen!"

"3000 yen?!" you exclaim. You don't have that much to spend.

"3000 yen is very generous for a blade of that caliber," the girl explains.

"How much for these daggers?" Kiriko asks.

"1000 each, and I can assure you, that's a bargain."

"Sold!" Kiriko yells as she excitedly reaches into her pocket, until you stop her.

"Hang on a minute," you remark. "The school is charging for these?"

"Of course!" the girl replies. "Weapons like these don't come cheap!"

"No..." you reply. "I know this school too well. All the weapons and equipment are free for student use. All survival equipment are donations. I'm guessing you were put in charge of handing them out, and wanted to make some money of your own?"

The girl smirks and gives a playful wink. "Oh... I like you. Looks like I've got an expert on my hands."

"Did you seriously charge people for these?" you ask.

The girl shrugs. "I have to make money somehow! A girl's gotta eat, you know! Besides, I won't charge you for these now that you've cracked my secret. Just... stay quiet and you can take whatever you want from the table, completely free!"

>No, I'm telling Takeshi what you've been doing, you scam artist.

The girl stares at you. "Why not?"

"Because I don't want anyone getting killed just because they can't afford one of your prices."

"K-killed?" the girl asks in shock. "Do you really think I would deny someone something to defend themselves with? No, if they couldn't afford the set price, I would have accepted whatever they have in pocket, no matter how little it is. I'm not a monster!"

"Yeah, you're real charitable," you roll my eyes. "You're practically a saint."

The girl pouts. "I see, and I suppose you know me already? You've already worked me out, haven't you? You don't even know my name!"

You sigh. "What is it?"

The girl smirks, and gives a dynamic pose as she introduces herself. "My name is Io Tanaka, the merchant of Dark Gate Academy!"

"Merchant? More like crook," you remark.

Io puffs out her cheeks. "And yet you haven't introduced yourself at all! You're putting me at a disadvantage?"

"Kazuma," you answer. "Kazuma Asai."

Io smiles. "Well Kazuma, it was a pleasure doing business with you." She lifts the sword from the desk and places it in your hand, making sure her fingers brush lightly against your arm as she does. It's a pleasant sensation. "I hope you won't be a stranger. I'm already starting to like you."

What is it with you and these people? Even the ones who like you are creeping you out or trying to rob you.

"Night's approaching," Kiriko remarks, a hint of nervousness in her voice. "You all ready?"

You catch a glimpse of two of your classmates, one a brown haired boy, the other a stunningly beautiful blonde, kneeling and facing the wall as the silently pray, side-by-side. "Who are they?" you ask.

"Oh that's the amazing Shibata twins," Chuichi explains. "The girl's called Amaya. The boy's Makoto. They're apparently from some family of circus performers. I guess they must be religious."

Yes, they must be. You're wondering whether or not you should go over and talk to them when the floor crumbles beneath you, and you feel yourself falling.

You knew about this, your father explained the sudden passage everyone takes entering the Darkworld hundreds of times... but nothing could prepare you for the sensation. The feeling of sinking into nothingness, and arriving in an entirely different world on the other side. As you look around, you survey your new surroundings.

"A forest?" you hear Roka remarking. "I was expecting hell."

"The Darkworld takes many forms," you explain. "You rarely find yourself in the same part of the Darkworld twice. It's constantly shifting and moving."

"Hey, what makes you a sudden expert on all this?!" Sae snaps.

"I've done my research," you answer.

Still, you were hoping for something a little more... exciting than a seemingly lush and verdant forest area. In a way, you were hoping to be thrown more into the deep end, find yourself battling with something truly weird and wonderful. Hmm... maybe Kiriko was right all those times she called you an obsessive fan of the Darkworld. The idea of finally being here does leave excited tingles running up and down your spine, something you haven't experienced since you were a kid on Christmas day.

"Okay everyone!" Takeshi announces. "Most of the combat tonight will be carried out by classes 2 and 3. Our main priority is just to get acquainted with the world and... well, you know... surviving."

"Good luck everyone!" the female twin, Amaya, exclaims with cheerful exuberance. "May the spirit of the Elder One keep you all safe!"

"Yes, may the... wait what?" Kiriko states, raising an eyebrow.

>I'm curious. I'm going to ask these twins about this Elder One.

The Elder One? You've never heard about that before. Must be some kind of obscure religion. You decide that you should use this time to ask them about it. As you approach, the boy smiles and waves at you. "Ah, Kazuma!" he laughs. "We haven't met yet! Allow me to introduce myself! My name is Makoto Shibata, and this right here is my twin sister Amaya!"

"I'll also like you to know that I was the twin born first!" Amaya laughs. "So, it's up to me to defend my little brother here!"

The two share a laugh as you raise an eyebrow. They seem friendly enough, but you're surprised to see siblings getting along so... pleasantly. Kiriko is like a sister to you, and the two of you bicker all the time. These two are unnaturally friendly. "Twins, huh? You don't look much alike."

"We get that all the time," Makoto remarks. "So Kazuma, you seem to know a lot about the Darkworld."

You shrug. "Well, it's not really a big deal."

"Could it be that you are also a follower of The Elder One?" Makoto asks.

"No... as a matter of fact, I was curious as to what this Elder One is..." you reply. "Wait... what does the Elder One have to do with The Darkworld?"

"Well, he created it for one," Makoto explains.

"He... what?!" you reply. "What the hell are you talking about?"

Makoto gasps and covers his ears. "Kazuma, would you be so kind as to lay off such filthy language?"

"Filthy?" you ask. "Hell is too filthy for you? Damn..."

Makoto gasps again. "Would you please stop?!"

You shake your head and sigh. "Sure, whatever... so this Elder One. It created the Darkworld?"

"According to the stories passed down through our family," Amaya explains with a smile. "You see, we're descended from the original settlers of Dakugeto. Our ancestors fought the Darkworld when it first appeared in ours, and when it was sealed for the first time, we became wandering nomads. Travelling from place to place, but holding onto our stories, and the tales of how the Darkworld came to be."

"Uh huh..." you mutter, unconvinced. "And how did that happen?"

"Well, the story goes that there was this great deity known as The Elder One. The Elder One decided that he should create his own world, a mirror to ours, but one made to reflect all of humanities deepest fears and vices. He created the Darkworld in an attempt to store all of the world's evil inside its own reality. A place where all was wrong, so that our world could truly be right. He made his own pantheon of gods to rule over and maintain the Darkworld itself. He named them Archdemons, and each one was born from a different nightmare. Unfortunately, the Archdemons became too powerful, and they turned against their creator. They slayed The Elder One, and spread the evil from their world back into ours... which is why evil still exists on our side. But while he may have passed, with his last breath The Elder One poured his power into as many humans as he could, granting them and their descendants with innate god-like powers that need only be awakened. The spirit of The Elder One lives on in all of us!"

As you begin blinking, trying to process that dump of information in your mind, Amaya and Makoto stare expectantly at you.

"So..." Amaya begins. "What do you think?"

>Sounds like a really bad fairy tale.
>Uhh... yeah, that's a very nice story.

>I can believe it. Nothing's too weird for this place.

Amaya blushes. "Oh, that's good to know. Most people have been looking at us strangely."

"Hey, whatever you believe has no bearing on me," you reply. "Besides, we know very little about the Darkworld even after years of studying it. Who's to say your old stories aren't right? I'm not going to rule them out."

Amaya smiles as she steadies her spear. "Thank you, that's awfully nice of you, Kazuma. May all your wishes come true."

"The Elder One grants wishes, too?" you ask.

Amaya giggles. "No, no! That's just coming from me. I've always believed that if you wish for something enough, it's bound to come true eventually! And I sincerely wish that whatever you wish, comes true!"

You shrug. "Thanks... I'm guess a person with a motto like that is also someone with a lot of wishes."

"You know it!" Amaya laughs. "A lot of people think I'm idealistic. Me and my brother both... but I truly believe that we will someday achieve world peace, and that one day... well, I believe that a knight or a prince will swoop in and sweep me off my feet!"

"What, like a prince will ride in on a white horse like in an old fairytale?" you ask.

"Maybe..." she pouts. "I know it sounds silly, but I still have hope! They don't even have to ride in on a steed! Just when a man comes to answer the call to be a noble and pure knight. A paladin of all that is good and righteous. That could be anyone! It could be you!"

Is... Is she coming on to you? "Me, huh?"

Amaya places a finger to her chin. "Well, not right now. You're not exactly paladin material at the moment. You swear, you have a lax attitude, and you would have to do something about that slouch! No self-respecting knight would ever adopt such a lazy posture!"

"Uhh... thanks," you shrug as you walk on, before hearing a low roar.

"What was that?" Chuichi asks. "Sounds like we've got a demon on our hands!"

Hearing that, you can't control yourself. Clutching the hilt of your sword, you find yourself running in the direction of the roar. You know it's a bad idea, but your legs aren't listening to your brain. Some part of you is too excited to do battle with a demon... and that part of you is winning. You feel a fire in your eyes as you catch a glimpse of the first monster you've ever encountered in the Darkworld. The first Darkworlder you've ever laid eyes on. You feel tingles, a strange energy rushing through your hold body as you see the massive beast that lies before you.

Kiriko bursts from the brush of the forest, having chased after you. She gasps and stares in wide-eyed shock at the beast that stand before the two of you.

"Is... is that a freaking T-Rex?"

"What? Are you serious?!" Kiriko yells at you. "I can't ride on that things back!"

You smirk. "Come on Kiriko, can't you feel it?"

"Feel what?"

"It," you respond. "The tremors running through your body. The tingling in your brain, the tightening of your muscles. That's the feeling of us getting stronger, Kiriko. We're officially awakened now, and we can take on one measly Darkworlder. Now, I'm going to keep it busy while you get up on its back."

"You really think we can do that?" Kiriko asks.

"I don't think... I know."

Kiriko gives you a confident nod, letting her know that you have her full trust as you ready your sword. Time to get to action.

... But first, time to adjust your headphones a little...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rRQlrIkj3GY

Okay, now you're ready.

You break into a sprint, your hand still gripped around the hilt of your sword as you get closer to the beast. With a confident smirk, you wait for the t-rex to notice your presence, as it lowers it's head to trap you within its massive jaws, you hop onto it's head, pull out your sword and slice at it's neck. Nothing deep, just a cut enough to hurt it and keep it angry with you.

You hop the the ground as the dinosaur lets out an angry roar. It chases you, and you continue to move and outmanoeuvre the beast's clumsy movements. As it gets close once more, you slide under it's legs and slice at its ankles, slowing it down further.

Meanwhile, Kiriko's picking her spot, and as the T-rex stumbles with it's weakened base, she sees her opportunity. She runs towards the creature, her focus entirely upon it's neck. As she runs, you see her disappear into a puff of smoke, only to reappear, seated neatly on the t-rex's back. The shocked expression on her face matches yours.

"You did it!" You exclaim, as Kiriko steadies herself on the beast's back. "I don't know what you just did, but you did it!"

"I don't know what that was either, but it was awesome!" Kiriko laughs, playfully petting the neck of the barely mobile monster. "This is great! I'm going to call him... devilsaur!"

"That's a terrible name," you call back, staying a safe distance from the dinosaur and it's jaws.

"In your opinion!" Kiriko yells back, sticking out her tongue. "I think it's an awesome name, and I want to keep him forever and-WHOAH!"

Before you know it, Kiriko is losing her balance. Not because the beast threw her off or because she got distracted, no. But because a figure swooped in and forcibly removed the t-rex's head in one quick swing of his sword. Roka had slayed the beast.

Kiriko falls flat on her ass, as the dinosaur's remains dissolve into a black goo. "No, devilsaur!" she exclaims. She picks herself up and rushes over to Roka, poking him in the chest. "What did you do that for?!"

"What are you, dense?!" Roka snaps back. "That was a Darkworlder, not a plaything! You idiots should be thanking me for killing it when all you two could do was goof off!"

"We were not goofing off!" Kiriko protests. "We were just having a little fun, is all... jerk."

"Fun? In the Darkworld?" Roka replies. "Are you really this much of an idiot?"

"Says the guy who can't read..." Kiriko mumbles.

>We had the situation under control, Roka.

"If you had the situation under control, that thing would have been dead already," Roka growls. "You two were just fooling around, and you would have gotten killed. I should have let it eat you before killing it. That ought to teach you a lesson."

You shake your head. "Come on, Roka. I was dancing circles around that thing. Me and Kiriko know what we're doing. Trust me, as long as we're here, nobody is going to die."

>DAY 34

"We're here to honour the memory of Yasunari Hatake, who tragically fell within the Darkworld last night. While his body was never recovered in one piece, we hope that his spirit may still find peace."

It's been little over a month since you started attending the academy, and Class 1 has suffered it's first death among their ranks. Yasunari... you barely knew the guy, must have shared a couple of words at most with him. Last night, he got separated from the rest of the class after an attack from a horde of goblin-like creatures split most of the group up. While everyone reunited by the end into one group, Yasunari was nowhere to be found. That is, until Hanako, the blue-haired Class President, discovered his head separated from the rest of his body. She's been a nervous wreck ever since.

You consider maybe talking to her after the memorial service, but being the popular girl that she is, she's already surrounded by classmates trying to comfort her. Besides, despite her popularity, Hanako actually quite awkward and clumsy. You and her have only interacted a handful of times, and every time it ends the same way... the conversation starts off normally, until a spot of clumsiness on her part leads to the two of you bumping your head together, followed by her running away in embarrassment. You don't want to try to comfort her only to get a repeat of every other time you've spoke.

"Hey Kaz, can I talk to you about something?" Kiriko asks.

"Sure," you reply, raising an eyebrow. "What's wrong? Did what happen with Yasunari make you worried?"

Kiriko shakes her head. "What? No, it's got nothing to do with that! I was just thinking about starting up a club!"

"A club?" you ask. "This school has clubs? That's news to me."

"Nah, we don't have any yet," Kiriko explains, "But that's because no extra-curricular society has managed to gain enough support. A Saki Kobashi in the year above us tried hard to start a culture club, but she received... zero signatures."

"Wow, she can't be popular," you chuckle.

"Yeah, well I was thinking... we usually don't have a place to eat lunch without being bothered by Roka or Sae or..."

... Or Mayu, you think to yourself, but never say out loud. Kiriko has convinced herself that you and Mayu get along swimmingly.

"...But, if we start a club," Kiriko continues, "We'll have access to one of those empty clubrooms they keep locked up during lunch-time, whenever we want! All we need is at least five members, and the permission and supervision of our homeroom teacher."

"Okay, so what kind of club were you thinking?" you ask. "I'm hoping for a school band."

Kiriko shakes her head. "Actually... here's where Yasunari does come into it... his death was weird, Kaz. It's a real mystery, and then I realised there's so many mysteries surrounding the Darkworld. Let's not forget about all the people who have gone missing in there..."

"Like my dad," you reply.

Kiriko nods. "Right... well I was thinking we could set up a group dedicated to investigating these mysteries. We could call it the Darkworld Investigation Club! Maybe we could even throw our names in there, it's our club, after all!"

"Eh, how about the Darkworld Investigation Group?" you suggest. "I'm not fond of your version's acronym, especially if we added our names to the end..."

"Huh? Oh..." Kiriko's eyes widen, as she sees your point. "Good thinking. Anyway, I'm going to set up a stall right now, see if I can get any signatures."

>Cool, I'll help out.

You and Kiriko quickly get to setting up a stall... and by stall, you mean dragging a small desk out in the middle of the main entrance and placing a blank sheet of paper atop it with a blue pen to the side. The first person to approach your desk is Mayu. She doesn't even ask what it is. The second she sees Kiriko, she simply marches up to the table and signs her name on the sheet of paper. Kiriko smiles and thanks her before she gives you an icy look before walking off. Fantastic, first signatory and it's someone who can't stand you. Don't worry, you'll only have to spend every lunchtime from now on in her company.

Next to approach the 'stall' is Chuichi. Good, you and he have gotten pretty close of the last months, being room-mates and everything. He's bound to join up.

"Sorry dude," Chuichi apologises when told about the club. "I don't really like to pigeonhole myself into certain groups. I'm a free man, you know?"

"Are you sure?" you ask. "Just so you know, Mayu's a member..."

Chuichi ponders over it for a moment. "Tempting... but nah, I'd like to be my own man. But it's still cool if I visit your clubroom during lunch sometimes, right?"

"Yeah, sure..." you mumble, as Chuichi rolls away, riding his skateboard indoors.

Next visitor to the stand is Ukon, a red-haired boy in your class who is constantly decked out in loose fitting sports clothes. "What have you got here, Kaz?" he asks curious. "A new club, huh? Is it a sports club? Basketball, Hockey, Baseball, Soccer? Which is it?!"

You're taken aback by the excitement in his voice. He's certainly been lusting after a proper sports club for a while. "It's not a sports club, sorry Ukon."

"Aww man, booooooooring!" Ukon exclaims, before flashing you a devilish grin. "Oh well, if you ever want to shoot some hoops Kaz, you know where to find me!"

Next person to step up to the plate is a brown-haired in your class by the name of Risa. You haven't spoken to her at all in your time here, especially since she's been seen a few times with Roka.

"Oh hey, it's you guys!" she smiles as she approaches the sheet of paper. "You're the guys Roka hates, right?"

"Yeah, I thought that was you guys," Risa nods, as she picks up the sheet of paper and scribbles her name. "So, what exactly am I signing for right now?"

You raise an eyebrow. "You're going to sign it before knowing what it is?"

"Doesn't matter what it is, all I know is that if you two are in charge of this, then signing it will be sure to piss Roka off."

Now you're very confused. "Wait... you want to piss Roka off?" you ask. "Huh... I thought you and he were close."

Risa rolls her eyes. "He wishes. Truth is, I pitied him enough to go on one date, and to my surprise, he turned out to be Roka. So, we didn't have a second one. I've been waiting for a reason to annoy that jerk... so what's this for?"

"It's a club we're starting up," you explain.

"What for?"

"Investigating the mysteries of the Darkworld," you answer.

Risa stares at the piece of paper for a moment before breaking into a smirk. "Huh... can I sign it twice?"

Next to approach the booth is none other than Roka himself. Risa snickers to herself before walking off, as Roka silently examines you booth. He picks up the sheet of paper and notices the last name written down. His face turns red with rage as he upturns the table and storms off.

"Aw man, that jerk ruined our booth!" Kiriko pouts. "Now we'll never have our own club!"

"Uhh, Kiriko?" you remark as you lift the table back onto its legs with ease, before placing the sheet of paper back on top.

"Wow, good as new!" Kiriko exclaims, beaming with pride.

Next to approach the table is... oh no, it's Sae. You hold onto the table's edges, expecting another attempt at upturning it.

"I heard you stupid losers were starting a club," Sae sulks. "Well just so you know... I want in!"

"Well the club's happening whether you like it or-wait, what?" you reply shocked. "You didn't say what I thought you were going to say."

"Well, you heard me, didn't you?" she yells back. "I want in your stupid club for dumb losers!"

"Why?" Kiriko asks.

"Because I want to!" A red-faced Sae yells as she signs the paper. "You got a problem with that, girlie?!"

"N-no, not at all!" Kiriko replies with nervous, fearful laughter. "S-sign right up! Please don't hurt me!"

>I get it. You want an excuse to spend more time with me, your crush. Am I right?

Sae's eye twitches. "What did you just say?!"

Kiriko gulps hard as she leans in and whispers. "Hey Kaz, maybe you shouldn't poke the angry bear. I don't have any food to calm her down..."

"You heard me," you reply, the smuggest grin plastered across your face. "I just want you to admit that you've got a huge crush on me, and you're trying to get closer to me by joining my lunchtime club!"

"Kaz, stop, she owns guns..." Kiriko mutters through the teeth of a terrified smile.

Sae just stares at you, a fiery hatred behind her eyes, before eventually bringing you fist down hard upon the table, breaking it clean in two. Without breaking eye contact with you, she mutters, "See you at our first meeting, dipshit."

You may have dug a grave for yourself. Just maybe.

Kiriko sighs as she looks at the destroyed table. "Why did you have to keep poking her?"

You shrug. "It was pretty funny to tick her off."

Kiriko snorts. "Okay, yeah, it was. Still... we're minus a table. Now we're just two idiots standing around with a piece of paper."

"Yeah, but before that, we were still two idiots with a piece of paper, and we still managed to get three signatures. Just two more and we'll have a full fledged club!"

"Well, one more," you reply, as you sign the slip of paper. "The club doesn't need two owners. I can just take a regular membership role."

"You're placing me in charge?" Kiriko asks.

"Well, it was your idea. And you are my big sis."

"Ha, and don't you forget it!" Kiriko laughs.

Next to approach the... well, the two of you is none other than the class president herself, Hanako. She's sniffling a lot, still recovering from the memorial service, but even in this condition she looks stunning. There's no wonder people consider her the most beautiful girl in the entire class, rivalled only by Amaya.

"Hey Prez," Kiriko smiles. "How are you holding up?"

"I'm... managing," Hanako replies in her soft voice. "What is this you have going? Some sort of sign-up sheet?"

"Yeah, we're starting a club," you reply.

"Oh, that sounds interesting!" Hanako smiles. She has the warmest smile you've ever seen on another person. "Oh, I would love to take part!"

You pause for a moment. While you do need another member, investigating the mysteries of the darkworld, not to mention the death of Yasunari, may prove too horrific for Hanako. She'd never be the type to turn down the offer, though. She's too polite. Maybe it's better you retracted the offer, for her sake.

>If you want to join, just sign right here.

Hanako smiles again as she takes the pen from your hand and tries to write her name on the sheet, but can't manage it. "Oh... sorry..." she mumbles.

"What's wrong?" you ask.

"I think the pen's out of ink..." she sighs.

"No problem, I've got one in my bag," you reply, as you hunker down and rummages through your bag.

"Oh, don't worry yourself!" Hanako protests in her usual sweet tone, "I have a pen right here, so-oops!"

Hanako's spare pen drops from her hand and rolls along the ground to your feet. Panicking, Hanako rushes to pick it up, bending down on the ground as well. In her haste, she loses balance and drives herself head first into the still hunkered you.

Her forehead meets yours with a resounding thwack, as both of you clutch your skulls in pain. Oh, that one's going to leave a bruise.

"Oh, oh no!" Hanako exclaims. "I did it again! I'm so, so sorry! I... I..."

In an embarrassed panic, the red-faced Hanako bolts, running down the corridor. "Hanako, wait! You didn't sign it!" you call out, but it's too late. She's already on the other side of the school by this point at the speed she dashed from the scene. Real shame... you would have liked having her around.

"Well, what do we have here?" a voice calls out. You sigh as you recognise the voice, turning around to see a smirking Io.

"What do you want?" you ask.

Io giggles. "I just wanted to check to see how the sign-ups for your club are going. I was considering maybe adding my name to the list."

"Really?" Kiriko asks.

"Well, that depends," Io replies. "What kind of membership perks are we looking at?"

"Membership perks?" you ask.

"Yes, with these sorts of things you always have to sweeten the deal, give people some kind of incentive to join. A good way to do that is to offer them a bunch of perks that sound really useful but are ultimately worth nothing. It's basic stuff."

"Well, we don't have any perks."

Io pouts. "Shame, guess I'll have to turn you down. You need to drive a harder bargain than that to get me to sign. Still, I may pay a visit any time I'm not busy selling my wares during lunch."

"You mean, pawning off old trinkets at ridiculous prices that only idiots could fall for?" you ask.

Io laughs and wags her finger. "Now Kazuma, I remember you being one of those so-called idiots a mere week ago!"

It's true, unfortunately. No matter how many times you tried to resist, Io's got a strange way with words. All it took was a few strangely convincing arguments, and most ashamedly, a couple batting of her eyelashes for her to convince you that was amounted to a stone picked up from the courtyard was definitely a valuable item well worth the 800 yen investment, as you'd be able to sell it at a higher price a year from now, right?

"Okay, that only an idiot could fall for twice."

Io wags her finger again with a smirk.

"Three times," you sigh.

As Io skips off, you are approached by red-haired girl in a pair of shorts. You recognise her as a girl in your class by the name of Tami. She's rarely seen during break. Apparently she's the real survivalist type, and spends most of her free time in the forests near the school, hunting animals and living off the land. She smiles as she looks at the sheet of paper. "You guys need five signatures, right?" she asks.

"Uhh... yeah, we do..." you reply.

"Cool," Tami replies. "I'll be your fifth."

"Wow, really?" Kiriko asks. "You mean it?"

"Yeah, why not?" Tami laughs. "So... this is to research the Darkworld, right?"

"Yeah."

"Hmm..." Tami mumbles as she scribbles her name on the sheet. "Quick question then, what's your policy on hunting Darkworlders?"

"Huh?" you ask.

"Hunting them," Tami repeats. "You know, finding the biggest game, tracking it down, and taking it out. That kind of thing."

>It's encouraged. We're going to want to take out as many Darkworlders as possible.

Tami raises an eyebrow. "Okay... are you expecting to find a Darkworlder we can just interrogate?"

"I wouldn't rule it out," you reply. "I mean, if the fates are kind to us, a Darkworlder who could just tell us everything we could ever want to know could just fall into our laps."

"Sounding a little too hopeful there," Tami replies. "But sure. I wasn't planning on killing anything that could talk to me anyway. Just the biggest and baddest monsters are what I want to hunt."

And with that comes the last signature you need. With five signatures set, you now have enough members to officially become a club.

"So, what do we do now?" you ask.

"Well, we just gotta take this to Takeshi-sensei and with his permission, the club will be finalised!"

You nod, as the two of you make your way to homeroom. You enter to find Takeshi sitting at his desk, a small Polaroid photo in his hands and he's... just smiling at it. You approach him from behind as he doesn't acknowledge your entrance, before you eventually clear your throat. Startled, he swivels in his chair to face you. "Agh, Kazuma! How long were you here!"

"Is that a picture of... the school nurse?" You ask. She looks a few years younger in the picture, but it's definitely nurse Tekina.

"W-what?!" Takeshi mumbles. "N-no! You're a picture of the school nurse!"

He lets out a sigh as he stands from his chair. "I'm sorry, I didn't mean that... you're not a picture."

"Thanks?" you ask.

"Anyway," Takeshi continues, quickly stuffing the picture into the top drawer of his desk, "What bring you and Kiriko here?"

"Well T..." Kiriko begins, causing Takeshi to grimace knowing that he nickname stuck with some students, "We've decided to start up a club. We've already got the necessary amount of signatures, and all we need is your permission."

"No problem!" Takeshi smiles as he takes the sign-up sheet from Kiriko's hand. "Let's see, what do we have here... The Darkworld Investigation Group... hmm, now that I think about it... yes, she loves researching the Darkworld! If I want to impress her..."

You shake your head. "Sensei, what are you talking about?"

Takeshi nervously wipes sweat from his forehead. "N-nothing! I just... I insist that I attend every meeting of this club!"

"What?!" Kiriko exclaims. "Why?"

"W-well it says that a club need to be under the permission and supervision of your homeroom teacher, right?"

"Yeah, but that just means you should pop in every now and then to make sure nothing's on fire," you explain. "I don't think you have to sit in with us every lunchtime."

You shrug. "Whatever, as long as our club still exists, right?"

Kiriko pumps her fists, before throwing her arm up as the two of you high-five. Takeshi also raises his hand, but when he realises that neither of you are going to high-five him he lowers his hand and yells "Hooray for friendship!" in order to save face.

"This is going to be so great!" Kiriko exclaims, throwing her arm over your shoulder. "Just think about all the great mysteries of the Darkworld we're going to solve over the next year. This is a turning point Kaz... I can just feel it!"

They all seem like interesting characters and I am looking forward to some more slice of life scenes. Also Takeshi sensei is best boy.

And I wonder whats Sae deal, she seems tsundere for Kaz but we kind of blew up our first encounter so why is she so interested on him.

Some nice numbers, so let's some girth. Same order.
1st for Takeshi,
2nd for Gado,
3rd for Roka,
4th for Taiyo,
5th for Atasuke,
6th for Chuichi,
7th for Makoto,
and 8th for Ukon.

Is Roka the Ryoji of Class 1?

>>467569
Wall of text incoming.
I'm looking forward to seeing what kind of character Kazuma turns out and maybe see if we can hook him up with someone. I'm interested in seeing if we'll come to some agreement about who the best match for Kaz is and maybe some more match making so all the cute girls can end up happy. Chuichi is going to be a super cool bro and I already like him. Roka will probably turn out to be a cool guy and I might warm up to him like I did with Akio. Atasuke sounds like a whole bag of fun, I'm sure we'll run into some shenanigans with him.
Kuin is my Queen and she will remain firmly in the best girl position. Sae is also up there since she's fun to tease and poke fun at, even if it'll end up developing some masochistic tendencies. Neither seems like a good match for Kazuma but I look forward to more interactions with both of them.
Io is a jew, that is all. She's fun though, one of the few characters that has a VA attached to them. Tami's probably got a nice butt.
Lastly, Kiriko will probably end up being my pick for Kazuma. She's a cute friend that we've known for a long time and she's pretty damn fun to be around. If we decide to not pursue romance for Kaz, I'd be absolutely fine with that since he'll still have Kiriko by his side and she's already a partner for him.

I was really startled when Nina showed up since for some reason it took me a while to connect the dots that this is technically the past. I look forward to any rare meetings with Class 2 since they're the characters I already know and love, but exploring Class 1 will be just as fun I'm sure.
>>
Any ships so far?
Right now the only one I have is Roka x Kiriko

Also I was a bit disappointed to find that Kuin didn't show up again after her first rant. I figured she would have chased Kaz down to get him to be her guard number 2.

Also Also
What are the current rankings in power for Class 1?
>>
>>467855
I am very against Kaz being with Kiriko. They have to much of a sibling/best friend vibe and it would just feel weird for them to be together.
>>
>>468009
Sae seems like the hardmore Saki 2.0 ship that players are going to go for hard, whilst I don't mind that since it could be as silly and awkward (and hence entertaining) as Saki/Ryoji I just hope if we do end up going that route people don't solidly railroad it, and let a few other characters have some time/fun with Kaz as well.

As for the rest of the class, there's a variety of potentially interesting hooks there and it should be another fun ride getting to know each of them better over time.

>Booker question even though none was solicited
I'm assuming it probably is the case, but will this season work the same as the first in that from here on in after a throwaway scripted death everyone is potentially killable, but also true golden everyone lives ending will be possible?
>>
I'll be running some errands in town before I can write up the next update, so expect the thread to pick up again in about 3 hours.

>>468787
Yes, this is still the case, the scripted death in question being Yasunari. However, from now on it will be both easier and harder for people to bite the dust. Easier in that there will be more combat and more opportunities for death, but also harder in that no more will one poor roll be a life-ending failure, you'd have to fail at least once before a life-threatening moment rears its head.

>Day 52

“Class, I'd like you all to welcome, uhh... our new transfer student. Her name is Alice Maddox.”

A blonde haired girl stands by the whiteboard, looking up at the room's lights, barely paying any attention to her classmates. A transfer students this late into the semester, and in this school no less? That's odd.

“Alice, would you like to say a few words to the class?” Takeshi asks.

Alice shakes her head. “Oh, no! They told me not to! Shouldn't say anything, they told me!”

Takeshi nods, confused. “Okay...”

Alice is assigned to an empty seat towards the back of the class. As Takeshi's mumbled and awkward teachings are zoned out of your mind, you find yourself glancing back at Alice every chance you get. For the whole lesson, she simply stares out the window. Not out of boredom, but instead with a sense of wonder and excitement on her face.

As the bell rings for lunch, you find yourself making your way over to her desk and introducing yourself. You've never been the active type, the kind to take initiative like this, but for whatever reason, you can't help yourself. Besides, she's in a new school. That's usually intimidating enough for people, even when that school isn't Dark Gate Academy.

“Hey, so you're the transfer student?” you ask.

She turns her head and stares at you blankly. “I am?” she asks. “Wait... yes. Yes. I am. Yes. Transfer... I transferred. From somewhere that wasn't here... and now I am here. Yes. Transfer. That's me!”

You pause. “Okay...” It seems she's not great at conversation. Maybe just first day nerves, or perhaps she's a relative of Takeshi's. “I'm Kazuma. And you're Alice, right?”

Alice shuts her eyes and focuses. “Alice... Alice... yes. Yes, I'm her again. I'm Alice!”

You scratch the back of your head in confusion. She's an odd one, all right.

“Are you hungry?” She asks.

“Huh?”

Alice pulls out a small candy bar from her pocket and hands it to you. You stare at it briefly, before she speaks again.

“It's for eating,” she explains. “You're supposed to eat it! If you don't know how, I can fed it to-”

“No, that's fine,” you reply, unwrapping the bar and taking a bite out of it. “Thanks.”

“My niece... sorry, no, wrong...” Alice mumbles. “My cousin told me to share that with the first nice boy who talks to me.”

“Huh,” you remark, munching on the candy bar.

“She also said... umm... she said to not let him have his way with me.”

You almost spit the bar out in surprise.

“I don't know what that means,” Alice continues, playing with the single braid running through her hair, “But don't you do it!”

>Well, it was nice meeting you Alice, but I've got a club meeting to attend. See you around.

>Hey, do you mind if we have lunch together. You're pretty interesting.

Alice smiles and nods. "Yes! She said this would happen!"

You raise an eyebrow. "Who said what now?"

Alice pouts. "She said this would happen!" she repeats, as she stands up from her chair.

You rub your temples. "Yes, but who is she? And what is this?" Talking to this girl is like talking to a brick wall, and yet she's got you hooked.

"My cousin... she said the boys would want to take me on a date. She was right!"

"W-whoa, a date?" you ask. "We're just getting lunch."

"My cousin told me that getting lunch is a date... I've had lots of dates with myself, but none with a boy! My cousin told me this is a good thing!"

"Huh..." you mutter, "So this cousin of yours, do they go to the school too?"

Alice nods.

"That must explain it..." you mumble.

"Explain what?" Alice asks. "Oh no... you worked it out, didn't you?"

"Worked what out?" you ask. "I just thought your name sounded familiar. Like I've heard it before. If you have a relative in the school, that must explain why."

"Oh..." Alice mutters. "Good. Good. You did it, that was it. That was the secret!"

You've noticed she repeats herself a lot, and sometimes takes forever to say the same thing.

As you walk out into the corridors, you feel Alice's hand touching yours. "Huh, what are you doing?" you ask in surprise.

"Hands..." she mutters. "Holding hands... we're supposed to hold hands, aren't we? It's a date, and that's what you do on dates... I was told."

"This isn't a date," you sigh.

"But it is!" she exclaims. "Also, holding hands is for safety!"

You smirk. "What? Worried about your safety?"

"Not my safety," Alice answers. "Yours."

As you round the corner with Alice, you come face to face with someone you don't want to see. Well... due to her pint-sized stature, she actually comes face to chest.

"There you are!" Kuin exclaims, poking you hard in the chest. "How dare you! You've been avoiding you ruler and disobeying my direct orders for a month and a half now! And now, you're having your way with the transfer student? You're pushing it very close, mister! Soon, I'll have no choice but to issue the death penalty!"

"What do you want, Kuin?" you sigh.

"It's not what I want, it's what I demand!" Kuin barks. "And your glorious and benevolent ruler demands, that you join me as my second guard! I want you by my side, and if you refuse to stand by my side, then you'll be sentenced to death! I'm giving you one week to decide."

"Not really a fair decision if one choice ends in death..." you mutter, as Kuin storms off.

Gado takes the opportunity to get into your face. "Stay away from Kuin. I don't want you having your way with her like you're about to with the transfer student."

You sigh. Gado has really frown into his protector role since Kuin singled him out. He's insane and obsessive when it comes to keeping people he deems a threat to Kuin away. Unfortunately, everyone is an apparent threat to Kuin in Gado's eyes.

"Trust me, I'd love to stay away, but it's hard to do that when she's trying to recruit me..." you explain.

Gado squints his eyes, staring angrily at you. "I've got my eye on you, Kazuma. I know your type. Typical sleazeball. If you come within ten feet of Kuin again, you and I are going to have some trouble."

Gado follows Kuin and you quickly realise that Kuin's chair is less than ten feet away from yours and you sigh.

"They seem nice, are they your friends?" Alice asks with a smile. "I bet they are. Friends are nice. Where are we going?"

Huh, you hadn't thought about where you were taking Alice for lunch. There's two options that spring to mind... one would be in the presence of your friends, while another would give the two of you some space to be alone.

>Let's go to the clubroom.

"Clubroom?" Alice asks, gripping your hand tighter.

"Yeah, I'm part of a lunchtime club," you explain. "You can come with, meet the other members."

"Other members?" Alice pauses. "Are they friends? Will they be my friends?"

"Well, they can be," you say. "But you'll have to meet them first."

You lead Alice through the corridors by the hand. Her hand is warm at the touch, she sends tingles running through your body as she edge closer and closer to you. You shouldn't be surprised by the sensation. Despite her oddness, she's actually quite the beautiful girl. Her cousin wasn't wrong to think boys would be asking her out. Hell, it is pretty much what you just did. Still, it's time to introduce her to your... friends? Well, your best friend Kiriko, and some other people you know would be a more accurate way to describe them. You lead her to the doors entrance and smile.

"Well, here we are!" you announce. "Through this door is the meeting place of the Darkworld Investigation Group!"

"The... d-darkworld investi..." Alice mumbles.

"Yeah, it's actually pretty cool. We-"

Alice sharply pulls her hand away from yours. "No..." she mutters.

"Huh?"

"No no no no no no no no no no. Bad. Bad. No. Stop it..." she babbles to herself.

"Alice, what's wrong?" you asks.

"You! You're trying to trap me! It's a lie, you're trying to trap us! Take us away!"

"Alice, who's us?" you ask in confusion. "Come on, just calm down and-"

"No!" Alice yells. "You can't! You can't take us! Leave us alone!"

Alice sprints down the hallway, a look of fear and panic on her face.

"Alice, wait! Come back!" you call out after her, but it's too late.

You... you don't know what you did wrong. One second the two of you were hitting it off, then the next... that was so strange.

You sigh, as you step into the clubroom, only to be greeted by a measly two people. And by "greeted", you mean that Takeshi burst from his chair and tried to look busy on the off-chance that you were the school nurse dropping in, while Risa tinkers with some guns in the corner without acknowledging you.

Yeah... the club has had some problems taking off in the early goings. A big fat zero real investigating has truly been made into the mysteries of the Darkworld thus far, minus you and Kiriko checking out a few books on the school's history out of the library. For the most part, you've mainly just gotten complacent with having a clubroom to quietly spend lunchtimes. Tami hasn't shown up to a single meeting yet. Sae is as tempestuous as ever, and it's always a gamble on whether she'll show up, and when she does show up, it's a gamble on whether she wants to burn the room down or not. Even Mayu has managed to pull Kiriko somewhere else on the rare lunchtime. Just like this one.

"Huge turnout, I see..." you mutter as you plop down on a chair, frustrated.

"Packed house, as always," Risa remarks, not taking her eyes off the equipment she's repairing. "What was that yelling outside the door about? Sounded like the transfer student... she seems pretty off, but I can't say she isn't beautiful."

"My dad called that the Dakugeto effect," you remark. "This academy doesn't have ugly people."

"Wow, that's flattering," Risa smiles, still not looking from the gun.

>You know Risa, I don't think I know anything about you. What's your story?

"Story?" Risa remarks. "I don't have a story. Well... as far as you know. I'd like to keep it that way."

She continues to tinker with the guns on the table, a hint of frustration creeping on her face. "Dangit Sae... these guns are so worn. When is that girl going to learn that it's all about precision, not spraying wildly in the hopes that she'll eventually hit something?"

You throw your feet up on the table and lean back in your chair. "You seem to know a surprising amount about weapons at such a young age."

"Thanks," Risa replies. "These two pistols here are ones I built from scratch."

"And you're still going to try and tell me you don't have a story?" you reply. "Come on, can't you at least tell me where you're from? I don't recognise your accent."

"No, I'm not telling you that."

"Because you can't, or don't want to?"

Risa pauses. "How about we talk about you? You're so interested in sharing information, you could at least bring something to the table? For instance... why the club? Why are you so adamant about researching the Darkworld?"

"Well, to find out more about Yasunari's death-"

"Bzt!" Risa makes a buzzer sound. "Darkworlder killed him. Next question. It's not a mystery... but something tells me there is one you want to solve. Maybe involving, I don't know... your dad?"

You stare blankly at Risa. "Don't go there."

"If you say so," Risa smirks. "But then how about you stop prying into my past, too?"

The bell rings, as she stands up from her chair and places her hand out, patting you on the head a rustling your hair. "Don't you worry your head about me, and we'll be the best of friends, okay? See you in class."

Well, Risa is officially a closed book. Great.

You step out into the hallway, just in time to bear witness to an incident that requires your attention.

"I already told you, Tsuki! I'm not interested!"

Tsuki Takudo, probably your least favourite member of the class. And that's saying something. There's always been something intensely suspicious about the guy, not to mention his intense arrogance and his overly flirtatious attitude with the girls. Kiriko's been a favourite target of his lately, and you were lucky enough to come across him blocking her path as she tries to get by.

"Come on Kiriko, I've seen the way you've been eyeing me. We all know you want this, just as much as I want you!"

He forcefully grabs Kiriko by the wrist, trying to place her hand on his chest. She pulls away, and as she sees you, she teleports to appear standing directly behind you.

Tsuki turns around and chuckles. "Oh don't be shy, hiding behind your friend. I know you're a real freak, just let it out!"

You run forward and sock Tsuki square in the jaw, as the black-haired boy staggers back, placing his hand to his face. "Agh, now why would you do that, Kazuma?" Tsuki remarks. "Is that any way to treat a friend?"

"You're not my friend," you reply, your fist still clenched. "And you never will be."

"Buy you're my friend!" Tsuki protests. "You're all my friends! And sometimes I just want to be... friendlier with some of you."

He winks at Kiriko, who gags in disgust as you hold your fist up. "I'm warning you. Back off, or I'll hit you again."

Tsuki throws his hands up in his defence. "Okay, okay... I don't wish to fight you, Kazuma. I fear that if I fought you while I was holding back, you would likely win. And I certainly don't wish to fight you without holding back... because then I would have a dead man on my hands."

Tsuki walks off as Kiriko scoffs in derision. "He's full of crap. He isn't holding back, either of us could take him in a fight, anytime!"

"I'm just glad I was here to stop him," you remark.

"Don't get too ahead of yourself!" Kiriko laughs. "I could handle things by myself! Still... thanks for sticking up for me. Usually, it's the other way around."

"Well, sometimes the little bro has to stand-up for the big sis," you smile. "Good thing the last class of the semester is only a week away. We'll be lucky to see a lot less of him during the summer."

>Day 59

"Watch where you're going you idiot!"

You ignore the white-haired buffoon who just bumped into you as you hurry down the hallway. Despite your protests, you really had no choice in the matter. Kiriko was dragging you to the school dance, by the legs if she had to, and that was final. Only problem was, you don't own a suit, and all of the clothing stores in town are already closed by the time you got out of class today. Which means there's only one person to fall back on... you really don't want to do this...

"Oh, I've got a suit just for you!" Io exclaims with excitement. Runs into her dorm-room, which she's taken to calling her storage area, only to come out with a fairly decent looking black suit jacket on a hanger. Just looking at it you can tell it's ill-fitting, you'll definitely have to roll up the sleeves, but it's serviceable.

"What do you think?" Io smiles. "I think it would look great on you. And it's all yours, for the low low price of 4000 yen!"

"4000?!" you exclaim. "I can't afford that!"

Io pouts. "Kaz, don't you know what this suit is? It's my grandfathers wedding suit. He got married in that suit, he first met my grandmother in that suit, my dad was born while he was wearing that suit, and so was I! All the best moments in my Grandfather's life happened while wearing that suit. It's a lucky piece of cloth, and it's an important part of my family. I can't just give it away for free!"

"-Which I will return to you assuming you return the suit in it's original condition! It's all fair, right?"

You shake your head. Not like you have much of a choice. You hand over the money to Io and she lets you take the suit. The hoops you have to jump through with this girl...

"That's all well and settled!" Io exclaims. "And I hope you'll pick me to be your first dance in that lovely suit!"

"Not part of our deal," you reply.

"Of course it's not!" Io laughs. "I'd like for you to dance with me because you want to, not because you have to!"

>Later, at the dance

"You look great, Kiriko."

Kiriko smirks at your comment as she does a small twirl in her white dress. "I know, right? Mayu paid for this dress for me about a month ago, can you believe it?"

"Strangely, I can," you remark.

"So Kaz," Kiriko nudges your elbow. "Who are you dancing with tonight?"

"What?"

"Well, as big sis, I've already laid claim to your last dance of the night, but you better move quick if you want to claim your first! All the boys are chasing after Amaya, and all the girls are chasing after Makoto. Wow... those are some seriously beautiful twins..."

"What about you?" you ask.

"Huh?"

"Who's your first dance going to be with?" you ask. "I mean, are you also chasing after Makoto?"

"No... well, a little..." Kiriko shrugs. "Honestly, I haven't decided yet. I don't really know if anyone's... right for me. Who do you think I should ask?"

>I think you've got a shot with Makoto, even if other girls are after him.
>What about Chuichi? He's a pretty cool guy.
>You should ask Roka to dance with you. As a joke, you know?
>Maybe you could try to pull Gado away from playing guard dog for five minutes?

>What about Chuichi? He's a pretty cool guy.

"Chuichi?" Kiriko ponders over it. "You're not just trying to pair up your longest friend with your room-mate, are you?"

You chuckle. "Come on, Kiriko. Chuichi's a good guy. Give him a chance."

Kiriko shrugs. "Okay, I will! Thanks for your advice! Chuichi better watch out, because he's about to dance with the master!"

Kiriko hurries over to Chuichi, who is hanging by the drinks table. "Hey Chuichi!" she smiles widely. "You wanna dance?"

"With you?" Chuichi mutters. His eyes glance over Kiriko's shoulders, staring at Mayu for a moment, before turning his attention back to a smiling Kiriko. Chuichi smiles in turn. "Sure, I'd love to."

Kiriko takes Chuichi by the hand as the two make their way onto the dance floor. Mayu stares with her usual icy stare for a few moments, before rushing for the exit, pushing past you as she does. Once again, you've somehow managed to upset her without really doing anything.

You roll up the sleeves of your suit for the thirteenth time, as you shove your hands into the suit jackets pockets. What do you know... there's huge holes in them. Holes that you're pretty sure Io will insist weren't there before when you return it. Looks like you aren't seeing that 500 yen again. Fantastic.

You sigh as you look around the dancefloor. The music is nice and all, but you've never really had the energy or enthusiasm to dance. You'd much rather listen to music on your own in piece that jive around like an idiot. Still, you're going to look weird if you just stand there, and your only two real friends in the class are dancing with each-other, so you can't hang out with them. Nice one, Kazuma...

Whatever, it's not that hard. Just pick a girl and ask you to dance. It's easy, right?

... Nope, not easy at all. Who the hell are you even going to ask? Mayu just left, Tami hasn't arrived, and there's still a few girls in class that you don't know at all. Still... you have to pick someone. It's just a dance, it's not a big deal. Just walk up to one of them and offer a dance... but who?

We've ignored everyone for ages, we're only now doing day 2 meet and greeting of characters pretty much at the end of term... Frankly it's a wonder anyone speaks to us and isn't totally freaked out by the silent guy that hasn't spoken to anyone for months suddenly butting into things. The time jumps in S1 occasionally seemed odd but mostly worked to skip past normal time to major events, this super warp speed is royally fucking up any sort of continuity and makes pretty much every character interaction we have now seem absurd to me :/

Actually, I was thinking the opposite. I would have been much more upset about the time skips if the potential to somehow mess things up didn't exist. I would have been 100% down with some SoL arcs about getting to know Class 1 before getting back to the main timeline, but that kind of thing seems like it'd be really difficult to make it so things match up. Maybe we'd talk to someone from another class that we weren't supposed to talk to or somehow mess things up. It seems like we'll have to explore Class 1 during the main timeline somehow, since we're already coming pretty close, aren't we?

Immediately after making your decision, you can't help but question it. The thing about Sae is... she's insane. She's got such a short temper that she could start trying to kill you at the drop of a hat. Asking her to dance with you may just be suicide. Still... seeing the look on her face may very well be worth the murder.

You cautiously approach Sae, who sipping punch out of a plastic cup, her usual scowl on her face, in a red dress with a very short skirt.

"What the hell do you want?" She snaps as you walk up to her. You simply smirk and hold offer out your hand.

She stares at your hand, then at you. "What are you doing, you dipshit?"

"I'm asking you to dance," you reply. "You interested?"

"Shut up, why would I dance with you?" Sae scowls. "I've got plenty of other people I can dance with!"

"Like who?"

Sae pauses. "Okay, maybe I just don't want to dance! Did you think of that?"

"Well, you look like you want to dance. You're tapping your feet."

Sae grumbles and turns her head, looking away as she takes your hand. "I'll dance, but don't put your hands on me. If you do, I'll kill you."

You step onto the dancefloor with Sae and begin to dance. It's a pretty awkward shuffle, as Sae insists that you stay arms width apart from her at all times. Not really dancing with her... more just dancing near her.

"Stop looking at my dress like that!" she snaps at you as your eyes dart up and down her body.

"With that headpiece, you look like a maid," you comment.

"What the hell did you just call me?!" she yells, her eye twitching.

"I didn't say you were a maid, I said you looked like one," you explain. "And that dress is pretty short, I can practically see your as-"

Sae interrupts you with a low growl. "You really want to try me?" she asks. "Is this why you asked me to dance? Some stupid joke to see how far you're willing to push me before I wring your neck? You really want to push me that far?"

Maybe you do. It would be entertaining at least.

I don't see how we could screw up by meeting people from other classes if we were never in situations of coming into contact with them. Look back at S1 and how often we came across class 1, it was pretty much never, and the few meetings we had were pretty much ships passing in the night (bar Alice of course, but she's certainly a special case). Until things started to head into shtf most of our interactions were within class 2 with the odd cameo from other classes, imho would have been better to do the same here before heading into timeline collision during the evernight. Unless we're going to also skip that entirely for fear of screwing up canon as you mentioned, which wouldn't surprise me at all. Ho hum, off we go to the post evernight dungeon crawl to save Ryoji/dad.

"Come on Sae, it's not a joke. I do want to dance with you," you maintain.

Sae stares at you. "You do? Well... you know, that's..."

Before you can answer, you do something very, very dangerous. You come up to her and gently place your hands on her hips. Her hips are exposed due to the way her dress is cut, and her skin is soft at the touch. As you hold onto her hips tightly, you look her in the eye, surprised you haven't been straight up murdered yet. As you stare at her, you see her eyes are wide as can be, full of shock and anger, but she isn't saying anything. She isn't even moving. She's completely frozen in surprise.

You sway gently in time with the music for a moment, before an unemotive Sae begins to speak, her face unchanging. "Kazuma... I am going to give you five seconds to take your hands off me and walk away. If you don't, I will rip your arms out of their sockets. 1... 2... 3... 4..."

You pull your hands away. "Okay, okay! I do want to dance with you, though..."

Sae's eye twitches. "Well, don't expect me to ever want to dance with a pesky fly like you ever again! Understood? Now get the hell away from me!"

You sigh as you make your way across the dance-floor, casually bumping into Gado, who is slowly dancing with Kuin. Their difference in height is ridiculous, and Kuin has to stand on his toes. Kuin soon turns her attention to you.

"Your week is up, soldier!" she yells at you. "I know I said I'd sentence you to death, but I'm going to spare you, seeing as I am your kind and benevolent ruler. Maybe when you think of my kindness, you may reconsider your position and join me as my second guard!"

The only thing you can think to do is comment on her dress. "You look like a Christmas tree."

Kuin puffs out her cheeks. "I do not! This is why you lost your opportunity to dance with your Queen! Now I have to stick close with my loyal servant Gado! He's protecting me from assassins!"

"Assassins?" you sigh. "I don't think so."

"Then explain the shadowy figures I saw lurking about the school!"

"Your wild imagination," you reply, before walking on.

Damn, now that Sae's chased you off, you're going to have to ask someone else to dance. What a chore...

You suppose you're just going to have to do this. You take a deep breath and make your way over to Io, who is eagerly awaiting you. Despite your reluctance, you can't deny that she looks quite stunning in her dress. She flashes you her wide, toothy grin as you approach.

"Oh, what's this?" She laughs. "Could it be you're offering to dance?"

"Yeah, I am," you sigh.

Io takes your hand and practically drags you out onto the dancefloor. She wraps her arms around you as she encourages you to place your hands on her hips as the two of you sway back and forth. "Do you like my dress?" she asks.

"It's alright, I guess," you answer.

Io giggles. "Just so you know, it's my grandmother's wedding dress. So... we match."

"Let me guess, all the great moments in your grandmother's life happened in that dress?" you ask.

"Oh, not at all!" Io laughs. "Grandma got too fat for this dress very quickly!"

She pulls you in closer, as the music comes to a climax. Close enough that her hair starts to get in your face. It's soft and silky, and has a faint smell of strawberry shampoo, but it's still hair in your face. "By the way, I know there were holes in this jacket before you gave it to me," you mutter. "So don't try to scam me out of my money when I return it."

Io gasps. "Wow, do you really think I would do that to you?"

"I have very good reason to think you'd do that, Io."

Io shakes her head as she pulls away from you a little. "You know Kazuma, I'm starting to get the feeling that you might not like me."

>I like you well enough... kinda. I don't hate you, at least.

You know she was just teasing you with her earlier comment, but you could hear a tinge of genuine hurt in her voice as she said it. You don't want to be mean, but judging what came out of your mouth, you have a problem striking a balance between being nice and being honest.

Io gives a small laugh. "Not quite liked, but no quite hated... isn't that the best we can all hope for?"

You start to feel a little bad for her. You've mostly been an introvert during your first term, mainly only hanging out with Kiriko, someone you've already known for fifteen years by this point. The occasional late night study session and hang-outs with Chuichi as well, but you can't really claim to be close to anyone else. By the end of first term, there's still members of your class that you haven't shared a single word with. Point is, you've never been much of a social person, and without reason to get to know others, you didn't bother. But you don't think Io has any friends at all. She's just "The Merchant" to everyone, isn't she.

"You know," Io smiles warmly. "You do look very nice in that suit. You should keep it."

"Really?" you ask.

"Of course!" Io replies. "And one other thing..."

Io leans in close to you, and you begin to get a little nervous. Is she going in for a kiss? How sudden is that? Wait... no, her face has turned slightly away, as she places her head over you shoulder, her lips up close to you ear. Is she going to whisper a confession to you? How sudden is... wait, she pulls away from you, presenting her left hand which now is filled with money.

"I just found this behind your ear," she laughs. "500 yen."

"Cute trick," you remark. "But you're really giving me this suit for free? What about your grandfat-"

"It's not my grandfather's suit," she snicker as she shakes her head. "I just found it in the bathroom of train station!"

"Oh come on!" you protest. "Did you at least wash it?"

Io giggles as she pulls away from you, give you a playful wink and moves to the drinks table.

You feel a tap on your shoulder. You turn around to see Mayu of all people standing before you. Is she going to ask you to dance? You doubt it.

"I don't like you," she mumbles.

>Uhh... okay? Why not?

Mayu pauses and stares blankly at you. It's like she hasn't thought this far ahead. "I... I don't like you."

"I know," you reply. "You already said that part. I'm asking why."

"I don't have to tell you that," Mayu replies, "I just wanted it to be clear that I didn't like you."

"I had already gotten the impression," you reply. "But how do you expect me to improve in any way if you don't tell me what I'm going wrong?"

"You're in my way," Mayu mutters.

"What?" you ask.

"You're in my way."

Mayu shoves past you and begins to walk toward Kiriko. What the hell does she mean by that? Whatever, before she's out of reach, you call out to her. "Hey Mayu..."

She stops and turns around.

"You changed your dress after you stormed out, didn't you?" you ask.

"Yes," she answers bluntly.

"You look nice," you reply.

Mayu pauses as she stares at you. "Thank you."

The dance is coming to a close soon, and you know what that means, you make your way over to Kiriko and grab her by the hand. "Night's almost over," you smile as you pull her in. "Someone order their last dance?"

Kiriko giggles as the two of you begin to dance together. "So, how was your night?" you ask.

"It was great!" Kiriko exclaims. "Chuichi's super relaxed, it was fun dancing with him. That's a good friend you've got there."

"To be honest, I don't know the guy even close to as well as I should," you reply. "Even though he's my room-mate, we aren't all that close."

"Kaz, don't tell me you spend all your dormtime listening to music!" Kiriko protests.

"That's exactly what I'm telling you, yes."

"I swear, you are the laziest, most anti-social guy I know. And somehow, you actually had a few girls interested in dancing with you! I don't get it!" Kiriko laughs.

"Just my natural charm," you smirk, as Kiriko gives you a light punch in the arm.

As some girl from the upper class get dragged out to play piano, you notice Takeshi making his way over to the school nurse.

"Uhh... h-hi Tekina..." he mumbles. "I... uhh... I was just wondering if you wanted to dance on me... WITH me, oh boy... that didn't come out right, uhh... dance? D-dance?"

Takeshi, in a fit of nervousness simply offers his hand and starts mindlessly repeating the word 'dance' over and over again until Tekina takes his hand, but is unably to keep a grip of his hand because of all the sweat.

"Takeshi, are you okay?" she asks. "You're perspiring quite heavily... ooh, perhaps you have malaria! I really should run some test-"

"N-no tests!" Takeshi protests. "Just dances!"

Takeshi proceeds to cut an embarrassing jig in front of Tekina. Tekina simply shrugs and goes along with it, dancing some form of the mash potato.

Seeing that, you can't help but smile. It's nice having moments like this where you can relax and have fun instead of fearing for your life. In fact, the Darkworld hadn't made in appearance in about three weeks by this point. As much as you hate to admit it... you were starting to grow bored without it.

Deep down, you wanted it to make a comeback.

>Day 63

And make a comeback it did.

Nobody expected it. Everyone was just sitting around on what was assumed to be another safe night after almost an entire month of safety, when out of nowhere the ground disappeared from below you and you found yourself in the middle of a red desert wasteland.

You're separated from most of the class, the only person with you is Chuichi, as the two of you were in your dormroom when the transition occurred.

"What the hell..." Chuichi mutters. "What's going on?"

"The same thing that's been going on for decades," you reply. "Only a fool would let himself fall into a sense of security like that."

You clutch your sword tight, lucky to have had it in your hand when you made the leap into the Darkworld. While the rest of the DIG were indifferent and were simply enjoying a place to eat lunch, you had begun to conduct some research of your own in your intense boredom.

Something that tipped you off as suspicious is that the Darkworld stopped appearing the second Alice Maddox supposedly transferred to the school. After a little more research, you realised why her name sounded so familiar. An Alice Maddox was registered as a former student of the school from many years ago. Awful big coincidence... unless it's not a coincidence at all. This Alice could in fact be...

"Yo Kaz," Chuichi grabs your attention. "What do you think we should do?"

Chuichi shrugs. "Okay, whatever you say. I'll just go with your plans."

"A follower, not a leader, huh?" you remark.

"Nah, just a guy with no ideas of his own," Chuichi retorts. "Come on, maybe we can find something interesting."

"Yeah, that's what I'm hoping for..." you mutter.

"Not gonna lie man, you sound excited," Chuichi notices. "It actually creeps me out a little. Are you just... into the Darkworld or something? Like, is this your hobby or something? Some people collect rocks, while you're interest is exploring hell?"

You sigh. "There's just... a lot of questions I have about this place, and I want to find answers, okay?"

"Okay..." Chuichi replies. "One other question, though."

"What?"

"Where those things always there?" Chuchi asks, turning your attention to the horizon. Tall, horrifying figures standing in the sand of the desert... actually, they aren't standing. They are moving, just at a glacial pace.

"I didn't notice them there," you remark, turning around and pressing onward. "Don't worry, they're a long distance away, and they're moving slowly. Just ignore them."

"Okay..." Chuichi mutters before turning his head and moving forward with you. A couple of seconds later, he decides to glance back. "Uhh... Kaz?"

"Yeah?"

"Look again."

You turn your head back to see the tall figures in the sand having closed the gap between you and Chuchi, one of them a mere fifteen or so feet away from you. They're moving so slow as you stare at them, but they moved that quickly in the couple of seconds you had your back turned?

"Crap..." You mutter. "Keep you eye on them, Chuichi. I'm going to look around."

You examine your surroundings and... a-ha! There's a cave nearby, the entrance to which is too short for those creatures to fit inside.

Walking backwards, Chuichi keeps his eyes focused on the walkers in the sand as you make your way up towards the cave. As you peer inside the Darkness, unable to make out a thing, you feel a tug on your neck. You look down, as the small blue orb on your necklace is... glowing. Not only that, it seems to be being pulled by some force into the cave.

The orbs snaps from the string around your neck and flies into the cave, illuminating the insides of a long tunnel.

"Uhh... so is it safe or not?" Chuichi asks. "My eyes are starting to water here."

"Yeah," you mutter before mindlessly crawling into the cave.

Chuichi follows from close behind, backing his way in without taking his eyes off of the creatures.

"Whoa, what is this place?" Chuichi asks.

The place is filled with a faint blue glow from the orb, showing a vast tunnel filled with beautiful, sparkling stalactites.

Trapped in though, you don't answer Chuichi, instead hurrying to follow the trail of your orb.

You follow the bright blue light all the way to a dead end within the tunnel. There, the orb floats in front of a rock wall, filled with chalk marking you don't recognise or comprehend, some apparent long dead language. You reach out and grab the blue orb in your hands, and as you do, you feel a rush of energy flow through you.

Instantly, you are subjected to a series of visions that burn their way into your mind. A bunch of rapidly flashing still images that you can't make head or tails of, but you are able to pick a few out. You see Alice, you see a man in a red hood, you see streets filled with people running in fear, the world around them burning... and you see him. You see your father.

"Kaz!" a worried cry from Chuichi breaks you from your trance. You collapse, but he is quick to catch you as you fall. Regaining your bearings, you look down at the blue orb in your hand and hold it tight. "What happened?"

"He gained a glimpse at his future, at the answers he seeks," a low voice mutter. A white haired man in a mask steps out from the shadows. "That orb you hold is host to some great powers, Kazuma Asai."

The man in the mask gives a bow. "I am but a simple kind man, and you Kazuma Asai, are much more important than you seem."

"What about me?" Chuichi asks. "How important am I?"

"You are not important," the man answers.

"Not going to lie, that kind of sting," Chuichi mutters.

"I don't understand..." you mumble. "What just happened? I had all these strange visions... I saw my dad..."

The Kind Man smiles. "You saw all that you needed to see. You saw a glimpse into what lies in store, a glimpse into your destiny."

"My destiny?" you ask. "What am I, some kind of superhero?"

"I don't want to butt in," Chuichi says, butting in. "But when you think about it, isn't everyone in our school kind of a superhero? We've got the superpowers, we fight evil... really all we need is some costumes."

"That orb you hold is a magnificent item," The Kind Man explains. "It is the key to all the answers which you seek. It's true purpose will become clear to you in time."

"In time?" you ask. "How about you tell me it's true purpose now?"

"Why so impatient?" The kind man replies. "The truth is, I cannot tell you the true purpose of that orb, for it is a mystery to myself as well."

"So you're completely useless," Chuichi sighs. "You know, when you stepped in I thought we'd come across the wise hermit master type... you're just some weird dude in a cave in hell."

"I am not completely useless," The Kind Man smiles, "Do not be so quick to write me out. I can reunite you with your companions, and keep them safe until the night is over."

"You can?" you ask.

"Of course," the Kind Man answers. "I may bring them here, and this cave will keep you all sheltered until the storm has passed. All I ask-"

"Ah, of course there's a catch," you sigh.

"I do not intend to trick you or deceive you," The Kind Man explains. "I merely ask that you might consider returning the favour a little down the road."

>Okay, bring them here.

The Kind Man gives a nod, before snapping his fingers and disappearing. Within seconds, the rest of Class 1 materialise on the ground before you. Takeshi and the school nurse are among them too.

"Oh... what happened?" Kiriko mutters, clutching her head as she picks herself off the ground. "How did I end up... Kaz?"

As soon as she sees you, she rushes towards you with a hug. "Kaz! Oh man, I was so worried about you!"

"Please," you smirk. "You never need to worry about me? When am I ever in trouble?"

"You're always in trouble when you don't have big sis Kiriko looking out for you!" Kiriko replies.

"Oh, isn't this lovely!" Asutake exclaims, fixing his hair. "The entire class has been brought together! Though I'm curious as to how that was done..."

"We met a guy in here who said he could keep us safe in here," Chuichi explains. "I've got more than a sneaking suspicion that he wasn't quite human."

"A demon offered help, you say?" Tekina asks, a hint of glee in her voice. "Oh, now this is an interesting development! Someone fetch me a notepad!"

"I-I have one!" Takeshi excitedly yells, pulling a notepad from his front pocket, before immediately tripping over his feet and falling forward, causing the notepad to be skewered by the tip of a stalagmite. He was lucky he didn't befall the same fate.

"So, we just need to stay in here until the night is over!" you explain to the group. "We'll be safe and sound."

The Kind Man said until the night is over, but this felt like so much longer than a single night. In fact, you know that this was much longer than a single night.

Still, after several long periods of sleeping, you awaken to find the world around you dissolve, as you return the your dorms. Strange as all of that was... you couldn't help but feel a little pleased. A little sense of relief swept through you. The Darkworld had returned, and you were beginning to get your answers.

After the oddity that was the seemingly endless night within that cave, the Darkworld Investigation Group truly began to pick up the slack. Despite it being summer, you and Kiriko worked tirelessly to gather up what information you could find. The first order of business was your research into Alice Maddox. She hasn't been seen since the night the Darkworld came back. The Darkworld disappears when she arrived, and it returns when she disappears... that can't be a coincidence. First year students are allowed more vacation time than the other students, and apparently Alice is making use of that, the word being that she's staying with her family over the Summer.

It's not out of the question, of course. Most of your classmates have gone home for the summer. You haven't. You don't have anywhere to go home to anymore. You told Kiriko that she should visit her family, but she refused to leave your side.

While Alice may be an enigma, the true mystery lies around your neck. This damn orb, a simple birthday present from when you were a child. You never would have thought there would be any more to it than that. It was just a stone, a shiny trinket to amuse you in your youth... and to serve as a reminder of the father you lost years later.

It was during one late night research session that Kiriko finally mustered up the courage to say it.

"He's dead."

You turn your head to face her. She's sitting with her knees up to her face, staring down at the ground. "What?"

"Your dad..." she clarifies. "He's dead. I'm so sorry, Kaz. I can't keep humouring you any more."

"No," you reply, determined. "My dad's still alive. I know it. He's just trapped in there."

"For three years?" Kiriko asks. "Kaz, I know your dad was the best. I know he was this kick-ass demon slaying badass, but... even if he wasn't killed, even if he was trapped in there... he's dead now. I just... need you to come to terms with that."

You can't believe what you're hearing. You know he's alive, you know it in your heart, and you expected Kiriko to be the one person to support you.

"You're wrong," you mutter, clenching your fist. "I saw him. I saw him in that vision-"

"I a whacked out vision you had in some cave?" Kiriko sighs. "Don't pin your hopes on that! It could just be a memory! Kaz... your dad is gone. I don't want you looking deeper into this Darkworld mystery only to be crushed when you find that out..."

She's wrong. She's wrong. And she's supposed to be your closest friend.

>Kiriko, if you don't believe in this investigation, then you can just leave.
>You might not believe he's alive, but I do. Let me have my faith.

"Kaz..." Kiriko mutters guiltily.

"I know he's out there. I just know it," you state. "I can't have you telling me that I'm wrong here. This is important to me, Kiriko."

"I know... that's why I can't keep it in anymore," she replies. "I've kept it bottled up for three years now, and now that we're finally onto something... Kaz, I'll support you no matter what. And I'll keep helping you through the investigation, because you're my best friend and I'm interested in this mystery we've got on our hands. It's just... Kaz, please don't cry."

"I'm not crying," you reply.

Kiriko sadly sighs as she steps up to you and wipes a tear from your cheek. "Kaz, I'm here for you. I'll always be here for you, but I have to be honest. I'm not trying to crush your spirit or take away your faith, but... just promise me, if we discover what happened to your dad, and the answer isn't the one you wanted... please don't take it too hard. I don't want to see this breaking you."

"I promise, Kiriko." You pull her in tight for a hug. "I promise that I won't be broken by what we find."

Because you know you'll find your father.

"Good... I'm sorry Kaz, I just needed to make sure."

"It's fine Kiriko."

"So... you want some coffee?" Kiriko dons a wide smile. "We've got a lot of school history to read up on, so we're going to need all the caffeine we can get!"

"I'll take you up on that," you smile. "But I know than to let you get caffeine in your system. You're usually bouncing off the walls to begin with, and I don't want to see what caffeine does to your teleportation trick."

The summer passes before you know it, and soon your classmates are returning to the campus. No major breakthroughs on the investigation in the last few weeks, but your suspicions are piqued when among the students returning from summer vacation, Alice Maddox isn't one of them. Who is she? Why was she so strange? The Kind Man proves that these demons can look and communicate just as a human would? Is she a demon? Hard to imagine a young girl who looks like her being a demon in disguise... perhaps she's something even more than that?

Still, it's the first club meeting of the new semester, the last day before returning to classes. Day Ninety... no, it's in the hundreds, isn't it? Hmm, you're beginning to lose track of the days since you began. The last while has all seemed to blend together in your head. It's all been a blur.

"Hey Risa," you say, welcoming the brunette as you enter the clubroom. "Where'd you spent you summer?"

"Places," Risa replies with a smug grin, being as vague as always in regards to her personal life.

You make your way to your seat, Kiriko following you, when the door swings open again. In walks Mayu, who takes one glance at Kiriko before cracking a warm smile.

"Welcome back," you greet her, and her smile fades as she sees you. Well, you tried. Hopefully, she had a terrible summer.

Next to enter is Tami. "Hey everybody!" She exclaims, waving at you all. "Decided I should pop into one of these things eventually!"

"Get a lot of hunting done over the summer?" you ask.

"You bet!" Tami laughs. "I spent the entire summer camping! Just me, my bow and arrow, and the land to live off! It was great!"

Next through the door is Sae, who silently pouts as she makes her way to the corner of the room, where she leans against the wall with her hands in her pockets.

"Did you have a nice summ-" you begin.

"Shut up," she mutters. "And no, I didn't miss you, before you ask."

Eventually, Takeshi stumbles through the door. He finds his way to a chair and gives a wide smile. "Good day buddies, I hope you all had a great summer! I hear Kiriko and Kazuma have spent a lot of their time researching the Darkworld and the school's history! Kiriko, would you like to give the others a rundown on what you've learned."

Kiriko stands from her chair, a stack of papers in her hand. She clears her throat, prepared to address the class... when the door to the clubroom is kicked open. You swing your head around as a brown haired girl wearing an ill-fitting green jacket steps into the room. She raises her hands in the air, making herself appear bigger as the loose sleeves of the jacket fall down the length of her arms. She gives a confident nod as she addresses the club.

“Hey there. How would you guys like to save the world?”

Thanks for playing! Episode 2 will be up Monday!

So, this first episode served as basically as lengthy prologue, showing the beginning's of Kazuma's story and introducing a good few of the key player in his side of the story. As you can see, Kaz isn't as social as Ryoji, nor has he been thrown in a situation that demanded he bond with others quickly, as was the case with Class 2, and hasn't exactly garnered a lot of friends like Ryoji did. There are some members of Class 1 who are still outright strangers to the lazy and reclusive Kazuma going into his second semester, but we'll get to see much more of all of them as the story continues.

He used my suggestion! All is well!

Anyways, I really like what we are seeing with this cast so far. I like what Io is shapping up to be, and am very curious about Risa, Sae and Mayu. Not to mention the rest of the cast. Kiriko is a great sister figure and I hope Kaz and by extention we, can build some strong relationships.

Can't wait to see Class 1 interact with Class 2.
>>
>>471385
Loved it, and I am looking forward the next episode that will properly continue the story from where we left last season.

>PQ
I loved Takeshi, I always expected him to be pretty funny but he went beyond my expectatives.

I also liked Kaz's first meeting with Alice and was dissapointed that we couldn't spend more time with her but I guess Chihiro and Ken stayed with her most of the first semester.

Chuchi seems like good bro and I am looking forward to more scenes with her.

Now I don't like tsunderes specially the violent type, but Sae's interactions were one of my favorite parts of the episode.

On the other hand, I was expecting to love Io and she seems interesting but her question and reaction in the dance kind of rubbed me in the wrong way, but that was just my first impression, let's see what will happen in the next episodes.

There can be some good things in there, Booker has run character Q and As and of course its one of our go to ways to see the Class 2 Timeskip OVAs. But its totally reasonable if you don't want to go in.

That said, I really reccommend those OVAs. Some good character drama, and Booker hopes to have more done soon.
