There's not much else for you out there with the soldiers. The strange lady that carried such a bloodthirsty divine presence with her had a point when she said you don't belong here, you're not a soldier and you're not yet officially the leader of the monster brigade. And even if you were, it consists of about one giant spider girl who's been alone in a jungle for all her life and is considerably horny.

It means you have your hands full already but one member isn't very impressive, not when you have at least two hundred royal soldiers ready to fight that need to be supplied and fed already. Besides, being an arachne, Tama eats a lot, so you have better be ready to explain that to the quartermaster when you'll have to. He is right in front of you right now, and was kind enough to give you water even though he had no obligation to, but you still have zero military authority, at least on paper.

That doesn't mean you're a complete stranger, you've been there already and you know Cassilda, and being the striking cambion you are of course people have been busy gossiping about you. Or at least you expect as much, because you're a good enough judge of character to realize when someone looks at you like you're a stranger and when they look at you and recognize someone they heard rumours about.

You can only hope they were good rumours.

“Now don't worry your little horned head about Amanthis”, the quartermaster says while he writes down the count of the water supply for the day, “She's hard to approach but means no harm. By the way you're going to set up camp outside the perimeter, yes?”.

“That's how I understand it, yes”, Cassilda told you as much, at least. She said they were planning to expand the camp and they can't go South because the civilians pretty much clogged that end of Maner and you might as well be the first. Of course you'd feel safer if you had a palisade between you and a jungle full of kobolds and vampires, but beggars can't be choosers.

“If you don't already have a tent there's one or two we can spare. Don't think we have one large enough for your... Eight-legged friend”, there was a moment of hesitation on his part, “You'll have to make do with this for now”.

“I already have one actually”, you note.

“Southside?”.

“Yes”.

He shakes his head, “Take ours, it has the right colours, that'll get you in the right frame of mind. Go fetch your things if you need but I'd rather you use ours to sleep in. Glovine! Carsus!”, he calls, and a pair of soldiers come promptly, “Help this fellow set up the spare tents we have. Oh, and take one of those wooden tubs”, he gives you a sly smile, “So you and your friends can take a bath”.

That's nice on his part, you probably smell really bad and they must have noticed.

"Where can I find the harpy?", you ask, "The messenger harpy?".

"Oh, uhm, you'll have to ask the colonel... But I don't recommend doing so yourself", the quartermaster sounds quite confident about that, "Ask Cassilda to intercede if you really need her, but she's the only messenger we have that can fly and that's too useful to not keep on a short leash, I'm sure you understand".

You're not sure you do. You haven't been led to consider harpies reliable or worth keeping close for their precious abilities, but you suppose this one's an exception.

"Can I use the well if I need more water?", you notice the two soldiers the quartermaster called are rather quick at what they do and waste no time in preparations; they might be ready to leave in a matter of moments.

"We have rules in regards of who can access the well depending on the time of the day and proximity to said wells", the quartermaster explains, "Those with the tents one circle away from the well will line up there to fetch water for their needs, the rest will go to their supply officers for the morning and the early afternoon. When not in line, everyone takes turn supplying water for our reservoirs".

It sounds complicated, and he cracks a half-smile seeing how you're not really sure where you fit, "You'll be told what to do. Had we more time we'd dig more wells, according to the dwarf architect we got we're sitting on so much water we could dig a hole just about anywhere and, if it's deep enough, we'll get fresh and drinkable water. But this accomodation works well enough and we don't have the manpower to spare for this, not if we also have to expand the camp".

"We're ready", the younger soldier tells you, and the quartermaster gives him a nod before looking at you, "Please leed Carsus and Glovine to where you are, they'll get you settled soon enough. And don't forget to get the tub while you're here, it's over there right next to the stacks of arrows".

You go and grab it, it's not as heavy as you first thought but once you lift it on your head and balance the weight on your horns you realize you won't have any problems lugging it around, though it does impede your vision somewhat.

"Thank you", and you vaguely see the quartermaster do something akin to a wave, but you can't be sure.

You lead Carsus and Glovine to where you are, careful to not hit anyone on your way. Fortunately everybody seems to be aware that you can't see really well and they actively avoid getting in your way. From what you can glimpse of all human specimen around you, you conclude that it's a very varied bunch, with plenty of different tails of different colours and fluffiness and also that Amanthis isn't the only one to have eschewed most clothes under her tabard.

>”Have you served here long?”.

Cute as fuck
>>
"Have you served here long?", you ask them to keep busy and make some conversation during your not very long trip.

It takes a moment before the two of them answer, "I just arrived. I mean, I was assigned here as my first duty. Volunteered". That must be Carsus, he does look quite young in fact.

"I've been here as long as he did. We didn't get reinforcements yet", and this must be Glovine. She sounds like she's about your age, maybe older, it's hard to tell, "Most of us have some experience under their belts already, even if it's just some border patrol".

"Yeah, true newbies go in the volunteer brigade", Carsus notes with a tone of amusement that quickly dies off.

"What's the situation like?", you ask.

"There's been a couple attacks. Sudden, massive, but they ended as suddenly as they finished", Glovine explains, "Casualties were fortunately low, we had plenty of wounded against the undead but we've managed to contain their advance".

"That was scary...", Carsus mutters.

"Most of the clearing has been done by adventurers", the woman explains, "They swept away most dangerous monsters and allowed us to set up Maner, then when we secured the area New Royo was founded and a caravansery was built between the two towns".

"The same adventurers that cleared the pirates?", you ask.

"They were responsible for that too, yes. They weren't all the same though, but you know how adventurers are...", she trails off.

You're not sure what she means, but it's Carsus that asks "What are they like?".

"Incapable of committment", she sounds very annoyed.

Moments of silence follow as you exit through the North gate. "Welcome to the camp!", you hear one of the guards say in a jovial tone, but you can't see him as he's above you and the upper half of your vision is currently obscured.

Right outside the walls there's your people, with Bryld yawning somewhat loudly, only to recover as soon as she notices you. Tahenohan is already up and has cleared a small patch of grass out to light a fire and put a pot on to make some warm breakfast. You can see Tama's legs but not the rest of her, though you can hear one of the two soldiers stumble at her sight.

"Hi-".

"Hi!", you hear Tama's voice as she scuttles closer to Carsus, eliciting the sort of reaction you'd expect from someone seeing a spider larger than a horse draw close, "You look cute!".

“They're helping us set us camp”, you explain, finally putting the wooden tub down and being able to see again.

“Yay!”, Tahenohan jumps up to help them out, instantly forgetting about breakfast.

“M-m-ma'am, I... I need to s-set up a tent...”, “Wow that's so cute”.

“Those-”, Bryld blinks, ignoring the bullying happening nearby, “Are we soldiers now?”.

"They're just lending us the tents", you explain, "No need to get our panties in a twist".

"Uhm... Can you get her panties off the twist?", Carsus asks with a note of panic in his voice, the reasons for which go beyond having a giant spider right in front of him, which admittedly would already be a very good reason for panic.

"I just want to watch you do stuff", Tama says, not being creepy at all, no sir.

As endearing as the situation is, you have to step in, if anything to ensure you will actually have a tent right now and be able to fill that tub with water and have a decent bath. Actually, now that you take a better look, even if you fill it with water to the brim you'll only be able to get soaked up until your midriff at the very best. It's not deep, but it's the best you have and it's way better than nothing.

"Tama, let him do his thing. Don't worry Glovine she does this to everyone", you smile reassuringly while trying to give the two some personal space from the giant spidermonstergirl who you can't really push away no matter how hard you try.

"We heard rumours about her curiosity", she watches her warily, but otherwise gets on with the work, if anything to get Carsus to stop thinking about her, "Come on, we have more things to do, let's get this over with".

With you interceding to stop Tama from being too close and Tahenohan and Bryld helping out, it doesn't take much for the tents to come up, though you end up being more tired than they are just for watching over Tama, for whom not even the pangs of hunger are enough to distract her from cute boys. And you tried, mostly because you wanted her to contribute to making breakfast and getting you, and everyone else, something to eat.

Alas, that will have to wait.

The tents are exactly like the ones in the military part of the camp, appropriately spaced from both the walls and each other too, with enough room both behind and around them to have some leeway to hang laundry or cook or just relax. They are tall enough to allow you to stand under them, can hold three people relatively comfortably and have that nice blue and gold colour that helps them stay in tune with the rest. Even though you're currently separated from said rest by a palisade.

"Woo-hoo! Cool tents!", Tahenohan looks very happy.

"If you need anything else...", Glovine starts, then eyes Tama and begins to push Carsus away, "... Nevermind I'm sure you have someone to bother for these questions. Bye".

"So hey aren't you all hungry?", you smile, trying to stop Tama from following him, "And we can take a bath too now!".

You're a troublemaker, anon.
>>
You decide that you want to have Tahenohan go fetch your things. For one because she's fast and agile and strong enough to carry them, and for another because you don't want to leave her alone with Tama. You need someone responsible to stay with her. That means Bryld should get to cook with her, she's a decent cook anyways and Tama must know a thing or two if she survived all her life on her own, that has to count for something right?

"Tahenohan, can you go to our old tents and fetch our stuff from there?", you ask, "There's not much but it'd be good if you could bring it here".

"Sure thing boss!", she tries to sound like a proper soldier, pounding her chest with pride and standing on attention for a moment, "I will go get the supplies for our captain-leader!".

At least she's having fun.

"Bryld, I'm going to get some more water so we can get cleaned up", you tell her, "Can you stay here with Tama and prepare some breakfast?".

"Yep", she stretches, looking quite relaxed, "Oh, by the way could you see what became of the rest of our party while you're out? If you meet them, I mean".

"Sure", you nod.

"I just wanted to thank them for bringing us back alive, that's all", she scratches her head, looking a little shy, "I mean they risked their lives...".

"Don't worry, I'm sure they don't mind", you reassure her. She did thank them already, but she has a point: you'd be dead by now if you hadn't been with someone strong and dependable for this journey, "But I'll be sure to pass your gratitude".

"Thank you", she takes a deep breath, "Alright. Tama, can you cook?", she asks.

"Can I cook? Let me show you what I can do...".

You won't be there to watch, though. You go and find a well to draw some water from.

As expected, there is a line. Plenty of soldiers still need to get their water or are there for more. Problem is, all of them have one or two or more buckets or other containers, while you're lacking in that department, and you cannot just bring the whole tub, there's no way you could lift it full.

It seems you'll have to wait for a bit, but the problem is you don't have a large container to carry water with and you don't know where the quartermasters are. You could, of course, go to the one you've found already and ask him, or you could ask Cassilda whom you should answer to, or...

"Hey, look at that!", someone comments when they get in line behind you while you're still pondering on what to do.

"Oh yeah definitely!", another answers. It's two soldiers, one with very short black hair and very thin eyes and another with wider, sharper eyes and disorderly red hair. The latter, with a strange smirk and a bucket over his shoulder, checks you out and goes "Are you the Red Devil? Yeah, you gotta be”.

Wow rude.
>>
"Where did you hear that name?", that would sound mildly racist if it didn't also describe you to near perfection. You're just half devil, after all. Not that a normal person wouldn't be able to tell the difference between a full-blooded demon and a half-breed, if you go by Yomi he could blend in a crow- nope, he has wings on his back and head too, other than a demonic tail of his own too.

Well, you just miss the wings, which might not sound like much but they'd make a lot of difference.

"It's been on everyone's lips since you left", the roguish-looking fellow with the red hair cracks a grin that isn't tremendously reassuring. You also can't help but notice he has a really pointy nose, "And since you first came to. Not many girls with red skin here, and we see plenty of that thanks to the heat!".

"Iria bless the tropics", the other comments, wiping his brow.

"Well I am not the Red Devil", you explain, "My name is Lillith Taieart".

"Lillith! Well Lillith look here's the thing", he wraps his arm around your shoulder and motions to the line with the bucket he's holding on his other hand, "You've been the talk of the camp for all of yesterday. First time you came in? Yeah we see plenty civilians. We thought "wow that babe might be a new camp aide!" but turns out you weren't. You can see the disappointment in that, right?".

"Not that we need more aides", the other specifies, as if it's important, "I mean honestly speaking we're just fine as we are-".

"Shut up you, you're breaking the mood!", and the roguish character continues, "So then you come back, and some of us get told to prepare for a rescue operation... And then it turns out you've gone for that yourself, with some... Adventurers".

"Adventurers", the other nods. You have no idea what their nondescript tone means.

"... And now two blokes put up a tent for you, with our colours. So we're just wondering, 'cause we're friendly fellows eh", and he pats your shoulder to underline both the friendly and the fellow adjectives at the same time, "We're just wondering what the heck you're doing here since you're no soldier and nobody's relative".

"I don't think anyone has a devil relative", the other ponders, as if he thought about it just now.

"Of course they don't!".

“But you don't look like you have armour or weapons either so you can't be an adventurer yourself”, the thin-eyed fellow nonetheless continues, “Unless you're not a devil and are actually a magic user”.

“Tell me if you are”, the roguish fellow winks, “'Cause if you are I'll get my hands right off you stat, no offense babe but magic users are kinda creepy”.

“Yeah don't take this the wrong way”, the other adds.

Oh my! I forgot we have new people who weren't there when I did all the setting blurb some two years ago.

Being a priestess does NOT make you a magic user. Your rituals do not count as the kind of magic that wizards do. That stuff is very rare and gives you mutations.

"I am the leader of the monster brigade", you point out, just to make it clear that you have good reasons to be here and you're neither a camp aide nor someone's relative nor whatever else might be hanging around a military camp day and night, "And I'm not a magic user... Yet".

The roguish fellow doesn't seem sure whether he wants to unwrap his arm from around you or not, but ultimately decides against it and keeps it there, "Well wow, wow. Whoa. Lillith, was it?".

"Yes?".

"The heck is a monster brigade?".

That's a very good question.

"A brigade is formed by a command group and at least two full platoons of-".

"No one asked you, Squint", he rolls his eyes.

"See the monsters in Maner? Well, I'm getting all them under a banner and leading them", you explain. That's generic enough to work.

"That doesn't sound like a good idea", Squint comments with a note of concern.

"Yeah that sounds kinda crazy. I mean we got a harpy already to carry our mail and that's awkward", the no personal space fellow continues, "I'd much rather if it was you carrying our mail about, I bet you'd look better in her outfit".

"Are you trying to flirt?", you ask, "Because it's not working".

"Oh come one don't be like that babe! Lillith! Lillith right", he pats your shoulder again, "No flirting here we're just colleagues and you see we must all know each other, it's mandatory for being in the same unit".

"What unit are you in?", Squint asks.

"I- I'm not in a unit", you frown, "Cassilda didn't tell me-".

"Cassilda?", the roguish character goes, and laughs. In the meantime you see Squint make a pained expression. You can clearly read the "I'm sorry" spelled out on his face. "Lillith, babe, I know Cassilda! She's a buddy, that sly fox!".

"Taum are you at it again?", a man ahead of you turns to give him a tired look.

"Hey Peter, you know who she is?", and he points at you, "This is Lillith! The monster brigade leader!".

"Yeah, whatever", and he sighs, turning to face the line again.

“Seriously ba- Lillith”, he corrects himself, “Cassilda knows what's best for you so just do what she says and you'll be fine”.

“Not that you have a choice with her”, Squint notes.

“Though I have to say your brigade isn't very... Impressive. I mean one monster? That's not much. Brigade kind of gives you the idea, of, like...”.

“A command group and at least two full platoons plus-”.

“That”, he points at Squint, “So where's the rest? Still recruiting? Because I don't think Stanley's giving up his harpy so you'll have to look for another one. Hey by the way where's your uniform? Ain't these clothes too heavy for this air? Most people stripped down to bare minimum you know? Just a suggestion”.

"What can you tell me about Cassilda?", you ask with a certain degree of curiosity. You don't know much about her, after all.

"Like what?".

"Like how do you know her, for instance".

"Oh, she's a buddy. She's laid back, none of that nonsense officers have", Taum sounds sincere about his feelings, which sounds strange even to you, though you have to agree she does look laid back and everything, "She plays games and ain't afraid of, you know, putting something to make 'em worth it".

He's probably talking about gambling. Again, this doesn't surprise you. "But what does she do around here?", you press.

"Heh. I have it on good authority she's the one who's actually planning all the Reconquista strategy and moving troops and supplies. Stanley's a great leader but she's got all the logistics and manoeuvres".

"So she's like... Second in command?", you wonder.

"More than that", he grins, then pats your shoulder, "Oh! I also heard she ran away from Amatsu. She had a fight with someone pretty important there and was banished or something. Well, that's just a rumour thought. Don't go spread it around too much she doesn't like people talking about it".

"So don't talk about it", Squint states deadpan.

"If you have any problems with Cassilda, just come visit me. I'll be ready to welcome you with open arms and give you all the counsel you'll need to deal with life in the camp", he winks, "Trust me, I am an expert".

You stare back at him for a while. His face is really close. "Do you do this to every girl you meet?".

"Yes", "Ye", "He does", "Yeeeeeep", you hear from the line. A few of these voices sounded feminine, not that you needed any further proof for this to sound legit.

"Why does everyone misunderstand?", he laments, looking around, "I'm just welcoming a new member of our force! Am I wrong or am I the only one doing this, eh? And you call yourselves comrades?".

"I appreciate it", you tell him, "And while I don't use magic I can do neat stuff with your blood. Neat devil stuff. So hands off please".

"Fine, fine, no need to be like that Lillith", he does pull his arm off you, though, "Hey, watcha doing in line with nothing to carry water with?”.

“Well if you hadn't held me this close all this time I would have told you that my uniform is still missing, along with most of my equipment. Such as buckets”, you lie. You don't even know if you're getting a uniform at all.

“Whoa babe why didn't you say so?”, and he hands over his bucket, “Here, use this. Squint give her that too”.

Squint does, and you find yourself with two buckets in hand, “Well you didn't need to-”.

“Ah don't worry they're not even ours”, Taum grins, stepping back with Squint, “You keep them though, it's not like we have a shortage of buckets anyways. And hey, Lillith babe, don't be a stranger okay?”.

>Get the water, go back to your tent.

You have no idea what's going on with these two but you have buckets, so what you do is get the water and then come back. They're of course quite heavy once full, but at least you have something you can wash yourself with. Hopefully, with all the pointless waste of time you've had to suffer, by now you'll go back to your tent and find that breakfast has been prepared.

And after a somewhat tiresome lug you bring a lot more water than you need for cooking back to your newly set up tents, and find a peculiar scene.

It's Bryld and Tama cooking. You don't have much to do so they're just preparing an onion padding for the bottom of the pot to go along with water and a bit of minced garlic, and then they boil it with wheat inside so as to make this soft, mushy substance that's a bit bread-like but lighter and tastes like... Well, garlic and onions. And minced sage since they found that lying around too. You know that this kind of thing would require milk rather than water but it seems like you don't have that available, at least not right now. Which is a pity.

But then, it seems like Tama got her hands on plenty of mushrooms that she's holding on her shirt, which she's pulling up to keep them not on the ground. You've seen Arianna already wearing practically nothing so arachne anatomy isn't completely alien to you, but after seeing her mostly covered, seeing Tama with nothing from midriff down is...

There's the part where her humanoid torso seams into the spider body and the fur begins, and it's weird to look at. Arianna covered that part, and pretty much nothing else, and it's just weird. Bryld doesn't seem to be paying much attention to it.

"Do I shove them all in?", she excitedly asks.

"No, this isn't... We can keep them for lunch", Bryld reasons, trying to find somewhere to put the mushrooms in. In the end, she picks a smaller, black iron pot and holds it for Tama to roll all the mushrooms in, "Put them in here in the meanwhile, we can cook them with olive oil, parsley and garlic or we can mince them and cook them with rice. Assuming we can get our hands on rice".

"What's rice?", Tama excitedly asks.

"... Yeah I don't think that's going to happen", Bryld sighs.

"How are things coming along?", you ask as you put the buckets down. You're not sure if you should feel awkward because Tama's half-naked or not. You can't even tell if she's flashing you something, but then again Bryld is rather sensitive about these things and she's acting like nothing's wrong.

“It's almost ready”, Bryld smells the product of her efforts and looks rather satisfied, “Where's Tahenohan?”.

“I thought she went to fetch our things?”, you blink. Seems like she's not back yet. Not that it's surprising, she had a lot more distance to cover, and on top of that she might have got distracted or run into someone she wanted to bother.

>”I'll go look for her”.
>”I'm sure she'll be back shortly”.

Dangit Tahe, she probably went off-track and found something fun.

Since Tama and Bryld are doing fine together, surprisingly so, and breakfast is almost ready, you decide you have to go find Tahenohan before it gets cold. Because you want her to have it with all of you but you also want to eat it while it's warm.

"I'll go look for her", you announce, "By the way that water is for taking a bath if you want to find some time for it later. I can get more if you need it".

"Ok, thank you!", Bryld flashes you a really bright smile, "I really needed that".

So did you. All of you. You idly wonder what you'll have to do to wash Tama but eventually decide that's a problem you'll have to tackle later.

You cross the military encampment again. This time a couple of the soldiers greet you as you go by. You wave back in acknowledgement even though you have no idea who they are, but you have to admit you are often in a situation where everybody easily recognizes you just by having heard your description and there's precious little you can do about it. Besides, a bit of popularity never hurt anybody.

The problems begin when you reach the civil part of the camp. You had forgotten just how atrociously messy it was.

Between this and the dwarf's bellowing voice serving as a constant background during all of your slow trek, it's no surprise that Tahenohan is taking her sweet time bringing your stuff back. You've probably overreacted and went to check on her while she actually just needed more time than you first imagined just to reach her destination. You'd have an easier time braving the thickest parts of the jungle than crossing this mash of unruly tents, people sitting where they shouldn't and refusing to budge and everyone going somewhere unimportant through the one path you needed to take and where there's no room for both of you.

It's not just time-consuming, it's also really annoying and it makes you feel a certain amount of hatred towards mankind as a whole. Of course it's a short-lived feeling, but it can get quite intense if fed strongly enough.

The farther you go South the more sparse the tents and stuff are, but you actually need to reach the tree-like tower nearby which nobody wants to live first, as it's your most important point of reference. After nearly having to push more than a few people aside, you eventually reach the clearing right around the strange, unusable tower.

And right beneath its shadow lies a figure. A cloaked and hooded woman, though underneath the dark fabric you can see hints of her figure: a pale complexion, and a blue leotard of a form-fitting material, somewhat wrinkled as if it has been wet often and most recently. Locks of straight, electric blue hair flow around a rounded visage and reach down to her midriff as she approaches you, walking with uncanny grace.

“I knew I would find you there”, she states matter of factly as she stares at you with her bright crimson eyes, her thin lips curving into a soft smile, “Remember me?”.
