The cold lapping of a river current against your cheek finally wakes you out of your deep black slumber.

Above you sunlight shimmers down through a canopy of leaves. Insects whir and chatter around you. You drag your body out of the river and through the muddy riverbank.

This is a forest. You know what a forest is.

You know that.

But you don't know your name. Or how you came to sleep on a riverbank.

Looking down the river you see only clear blue water winding its way to the horizon giving no clue. And you know one more thing.

You are lost.

You shut your eyes and try to think. The darkness you return to is far from restful as you strain to the utmost to remember something, anything.

...You sit and you breathe and you wait and you think but nothing comes to mind, nothing tangible at least.

You remember names. What you think are names anyway. Manu...and something that ends with a 'ya' sound. Katya? Matsya? You remember something that begins with a V. Viva...Vatta...Vira?

But Manu was something. That at least you're sure of.

Manu...

Naked except for a tattered once-white coat cold with mud and water you sit on the riverbank, feet dangling in the warm water. Your reflection shows an oriental woman, black hair disheveled and caked with grime, ropy strands dangling in front of brown eyes.

That's you, whoever that is.

"...Hello?"

At the sound of something other than insects and flowing water you nearly jump out of you skin.

"Hello? Can you hear me?"

You turn your head this way and that and see no one. "Who's there?" You call out, and the sound of your voice seems disturbingly unfamiliar to your ears.

"Okay okay...uh...I'm talking to you over the Besant. My name is Rook, Charles Rook. I'm here to help you. Can you uh...tell me your name?"

You shake your head. "Where are you?"

"I told you I'm on the Besant and...oh shit, I'm right aren't I? Automatic trauma screening is real...Jesus...Your brain is...it doesn't matter. I'm talking to you in your head, okay? I am in your head."

Nothing the invisible voice is saying makes sense to you. You feel your heart begin to race. You feel vulnerable. Whoever Rook is he can see you and you can't see him and he knows you and you don't know him and...

Birds dart out of the trees as you break the calm of the forest.

"Woah woah woah" The voice says. "Look Dr. Shriow you got to calm down."

Shirow. That sounds like something...

"Is that who I am? Am I Dr. Shirow? ANSWER ME DAMN IT!"

"Well yeah, you're Dr. Shirow. Oh man that trauma screening went pure overkill on you didn't it?" Rook says sympathetically.

"Look, what happened wasn't your fault..."

"SHUT UP!" You scream as you stomp the water. "SHUT UP AND STOP TALKING TO ME! I DON'T KNOW WHO CHARLES ROOK IS AND I DON'T KNOW WHAT BESANT IS AND I DON'T KNOW, I DON'T KNOW ANYTHING!"

"Look I don't know if you remember anything about what happened but if you do I swear it wasn't your fault Dr. Shriow, I swear..."

You feel a pricking sensation at the back of your skull. Reflexes are taking over. You know, as much as you know how to breathe or blink, that if you really wanted to you could shut up the invisible voice. You could drive Charles Rook out of your mind...if you want to...

"Tell me...." You say in between deep, angry breathes. "Everything that you can."

"You're near Fuji base...which is uh, off Mt. Fuji. You know where that is? It's a place called Aokigahara..."

You have no idea what these places are.

"No..." You respond over a stifled sob.

"Okay okay....lets talk basic stuff Doc. They aren't watching me closely but they do check up on me so I can't keep in contact with you all the time, in fact I'll have to drop communication soon, but I'll check in with you when I can. Don't be around people when you're hungry...I mean hungry hungry, regular human hunger is alright, that's just a vestigial thing we couldn't program out. But when you're HUNGRY hungry don't get around people. Just don't."

"I don't understand..."

"You will. When you're hungry enough the system takes over to feed you to prevent self-cannibalization. Don't let it get that bad though."

You think you're hungry now...the hungry Rook is talking about. It's not like wanting food. You feel that too but this is...different. It's like having an itch but not on any part of your body and its like being thirsty..."

"What do I do if I'm...hungry hungry?"

"Well just...just eat. I mean will yourself to..."

The nature around you dies instantly. The grass turns bone white and crumbles to dust under its own weight. The trees rot and creak and collapse into splinters. A fish's skeleton trapped in the current bumps against your ankle.

It happens in an instant. You only have time to be afraid when you're sitting in a pile of dust.

Your fear is short lived however. A feeling of warmth and wholeness washes over you. You feel strong. You feel calm. You feel good, really really good, and all the death around you can't take that feeling away from you.

"...I killed things..." You mutter.

"Just plants and trees though...right Doc?"

You look down at your feet. "And a fish..."

"Well that's fine. Okay, now you see why you don't do that around people right?"

You nod, then remember Rook is in your head.

"Yes...."

"Good. Now I don't have any contacts in Japan yet but I'm working on that. I'll find you someplace to live, someone to take care of you. I just need time. Until then avoid the police they'll be looking for you. Head to a city though. They won't send Manus after you if you're around people."

There's that word again.

"What is Manu?"

"It's what you are. A Manu. You're designed to pass through the gravity gate."

"I don't know what those things are..."

"...That's alright." Rook says consolingly. "It has to be a lot to take in. Just head to a city and keep your head down. You were apart of a great experiment Doc, an experiment to save humanity from itself...and as far as I'm concerned you're still apart of that experiment."

"Why can't I remember anything?"

"Because what just happened, which wasn't your fault and you should NEVER believe its your fault no matter what they tell you, was traumatic. Very traumatic. You and other Manus have this thing in their brain-"

"The Besant?"

"No. Not that. The Besant is like...a telephone if that makes sense. Just without a telephone being there. What I'm talking about is automatic trauma screening-ATS. You see the trip through the gravity gate is damaging both to the body and the mind so...you forget the trip. In fact you forget anything to psychologically traumatizing but for you, for what happened your ATS went crazy and now well...it'll come back. I'm sure of it. It'l just take time."

"Will it come back though?"

"Yeah."

It's hard to tell if he's lying without seeing his face.

HE'S KEEPING SOMETHING FROM YOU. SOMETHING ABOUT WHAT SET OFF YOUR ATS. DO YOU DEMAND TO KNOW WHAT IT WAS OR ARE YOU FINE WITH NOT KNOWING FOR NOW. AFTER ALL IT MUST HAVE BEEN SOMETHING PRETTY DAMN UNPLEASANT.

"Just...what is the gravity gate?"

"Do you know the cold war? The tension between the US and the Soviets?"

"It sounds familiar but...something like the threat of war right?"

"It's 1985 okay? At the rate we're going we're all going to be dead before 2000. Anyone can see where the wind is blowing. But we got lucky with the gravity gate. We found another world, another home. In the worst case scenario we send Manus to live there and carry on humanity while the rest of our sorry race burns in atomic fire. Project Vaivasvata remember?"

"No..." You feel a pressure steadily build in your head with every word he says. "Wait! I remember it...I remember...I was chosen right?" The memory breaks through like the first beams of a sunrise over a horizon. "I was chosen because I was going to win the noble prize in chemistry..."

"Yeah! Yeah! You're remembering things Doc! I told you that you would!"

"We were supposed to be like astronaughts. The best and brightest. Noah's ark..." You feel yourself start to cry streams of happy, joyous tears even as your skull throbs. "I remember!"

"That's it doc! Do you remember the Matsya? The old race trapped between worlds? The ones that showed us how to make the gravity gate? The ones that were always here in the Besant fields?"

You can't remember that much. Not now. But you don't feel sad. You're remembering. You're getting better. You think you'll remember everything before too long.

"No...No I don't remember all that. But it's okay. It's okay Rook." You smile until it hurts. "I'm a scientist....I was going to win the Noble prize!"

"You're one of the best scientists Doc..."

"Rook...do I know you? Were you someone I worked with?"

"No. Not that smart. I'm just a guy that knows how to mess around with the Bessant. I used to do phone freaking and hacking and now I do this...look, you need to get yourself to a city. The Matsyas, they betrayed us. Or part of them betrayed us anyway. The don't think we're worthy of having another world. They think we'll ruin it. And they're jealous we didn't fuck up and trap our own race between worlds in the Besant fields. They've infiltrated Vaivasvata, oh man it was like Manchurian Candidate meets Exorcist. They're in charge now. They're using our connections and secrecy against us. They want to change humanity, make us docile and stupid like lambs. They want to make us into bodies they can inhabit. They say its for our own good. They have traitors working for them. Manus like yourself."

"So we're supposed to...fight them?"

"I guess. I don't know. You can fight them. You're special but there's only one of you and it all happened so fast...just get to city and stay safe. I'm going tohave to drop the connection now Doc. I don't want to risk the chance of getting discovered....password is Karras okay? Say Karras when I talk to you again and if I don't say Reagan then its not me, it just has my voice...."

>>

You hear faint mutterings. Different voices.

"Rook? Rook? Is there someone else there?"

"Yeah Doc there's a team of us and...but that's insane check it again. They wouldn't risk...HOW many megatons?"

"Rook? What are you talking about."

"...Oh mother fuck me...." Rook whispers.

"Doc..." He says with a shaking voice. "Doc listen to me. It's going to get very scary right now. It's going to get very loud and very painful and I'm sorry about that. Whatever it feels like know it won't last and it won't kill you. I'm sorry I'm not going to be here to explain it to you."

"Rook what are you talking about? Rook?"

"I'm sorry Doc, please trust me to call back later. I cant' talk longer!"

"Rook!"

Your word echo in the empty forest.

"Rook!"

There's no shadow. No sound. No warning. The ICBM broke the sound barrier over Korea.

First the fireball. It blasts off your facade to reveal the chitinous armor underneath, your true skin. Your sense are overwhelmed by white hot light and heat. They incinerate and die in an instant. New, more powerful senses arise to take their place. They frighten you, these senses that let you watch the tornado that was once a forest in perfect clarity, that let you glance up and see straight through the fire to a perfect blue sky. Your sense of self is being incinerated just like your skin was.

You want to scream but your lungs are filled with fire. But then you don't need to scream. Instinct takes over and you haven't felt such calm and clarity sense you woke up.

Then the blast wave hits.

Your teeth explode into shrapnel and your body recycles the mess in an instant into a new mouth, one without teeth. Your eyes expand. Your vision becomes enormous. You cannot blink. You've lost that ability. The holocaust is in your face and you cannot blink.

And you don't need to. Not anymore.

When the nuclear fire dies you stand living. You stand on the black scar of Earth that was once a forest...and you scream. You scream a high wail of primal, life-affirming vigor that shoves the smoke away to uncover black ruination.

You unfurl your white wings, their hairs glowing an unearthly blue, ready to deploy against anything to follow the nuclear attack.

You raise your thick neck and see the tip of your enormous horn burn white with energy, ready to deploy against anything to follow the nuclear attack.

"Heh...heh heh heh."

A voice. Not from the Besant. From around you.

Something is moving fast. You hear its footsteps crack the volcanic glass. Its using the smoke for cover. Your bulky shelled back snaps open and two part arch over your shoulders as you beat your wings fast enough to disperse some of the smoke.

You reveal cracked volcanic glass...

"He he he he..."

"Toro! Toro! Eh he he he he...to think you were Mensa. Now look at you. Can you even talk anymore?"

You beat your wings. Maybe a little more visibility will give you just enough of an advantage....

You push back the smoke. You're left in a wide black circle of volcanic glass.

This one if fast, whatever it is. It was able to keep himself hidden in the smoke even as you beat it back...

"I guess you were just a dumb normal in the end Shirow. Not good enough, not like us. Just as dumb like the idiots that thought their firecrackers could put one of us down. Your horn sparks as it gathers power...

ENERGY: 20

"Tch. So you have tough armor beetle-bitch. So what."

He retracts his hand...and then he does something unexpected. He jabs all ten fingers into the ground as if to brace himself, then his body begins to shift and change. He leans forward, elongates, his mouth unhinges, you can see a faint purple light shine from his gullet...

It's like a cannon straight out of Hell...

"Eh he he he he...."

CLEARLY YOU AREN'T THE ONLY ONE WITH ENERGY TRICKS....YOU COULD GAIN A HUGE ADVANTAGE IF YOU PULLED HIM TOWARD YOU WHILE HE'S LIKE THIS. BUT IF YOU MESSED UP HE COULD SHOOT YOU POINT BLANK WITH WHATEVER IT IS HE HAS.

YOU COULD TRY TO REPLUSE HIM, MAYBE A BLAST WILL THROW OFF HIS AIM?

YOU COULD RUSH HIM DOWN. MAYBE HE WON'T SUSPECT SUCH RECKLESSNESS?

PULL, REPULSE, OR CHARGE. AND INDICATE HOW MUCH ENERGY YOU WANT TO SPEND IF YOU WANT TO SPEND OVER THE FIVE REQUIRED.

THEME MUSIC:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DTHJkeqRt-8

"EAT ME!" You growl. Your mouth wasn't made for talking, but you can form words when you really want to try, and right now you really want to let Bloodion know just how fucked he is.

You spear your horn right down his gullet. He makes a horrible sound as you scatter red tissue and white teeth for miles from the impact.

Music to your ears.

The scientist underneath the monster gave you the idea and the animalistic instincts gave you the courage to do it. He's like a living cartoon. You can stretch him, bend him, probably even tear him apart and he'll still keep coming.

But what if you built up vibrations in him? Attracted and repelled him at the same time? That energy would build and build. You'd shake him to atoms.

And with the energy charge already building inside him...

The vibrations shake him until Bloodion looks like nothing human on the end of your horn. He's simply a mass of goo trying to hold itself together the best it can, not knowing how to stretch or bend to disperse the vibrations.

There is no way to bend. There is no way to stretch. There is no escape from this.

"THRUSTUUUUUUU!"

Purple veins creep along Bloodion, cracking him like a pane of glass. The tremendous forces inside him build until you can hear his very body begin to creak apart.

And then, for an instant, there is a purple sky.

And then red rain falls over the broken battlefield of black earth and white ash.

You let it fall over you. You embrace it.

Again, they send death against you and again, the only thing living is you.

The air around your horn chimes like a musical instrument as it vents off the final vibrations. Then it is still and you brace your body for the sickening crash of adrenaline-like substances modern pharmacologists only see in nightmares.

It comes, and it passes, and now you take inventory of yourself.

You are FAMISHED, one step beyond HUNGRY. And there's nothing in this dead landscape with any life left...unless you count the red mess you've left in the wake of your victory...

You reach out and feed.

The red remains hiss away into steam and you feel your wounds closing...and more. The remains that cover you turn white and enter your wounds forming pale scab tissue. Part of Bloodion becomes you, and the novel DNA is taken apart by your Manu body and put to use strengthening your tissues, making them stronger and hardier.

At the edge of your perception you think you sense motion, like something scurrying away...but its probably just the overwhelming feeling of satiation coming making you sense things.

You are stronger now.

HUNGER LEVELS

HUNGRY: Can be ignored. You can function just fine at this level. Thing of this as the warning tier.

FAMISHED: You can't ignore the hunger you feel, but it doesn't impair you unless stressed or aggravated.

STARVING: You go to eat. Your judgement is severely impaired. You will prioritize eating over anything not of the utmost importance and have a chance of prioritizing eating over even these things.

AGONIZED: Doing anything but eating requires a tremendous feat of willpower.

INSANE: You are eating. Now. Your instincts fully take over and you have no control. Your body is cannibalizing itself at this point. Beyond this tier lies death.

Theme Song: Fairy Dreaming

......

Your true form hisses away in a cloud of black smoke. When it clears your human disguise stumbles on shaky legs on a ground slick with ash.

You stand as naked as the day you were born, the only living thing for miles. You cross yourself with your arms as the wind blows rough ash against your body. You take one step, and then another.

There's a city somewhere on Earth after all.

......

You have no idea how long you've walked but you don't feel tired. You think you used to get tired a long time ago from walking, before you became a Manu. The world starts to look more like world the more you walk. You find black treestumps blasted over by the corners of the wind blast sphere. You go a little further and ah, grass beneath your bare feet. And its cool with dew.

You could eat up the grass, begin to sate your hunger as you walk...but you kind of don't want to. You just walked through a dead landscape and...you don't want to see anymore of it. And the grass is so soft beneath your feet...

DO NOT FORGET. MIND IS A STAT, AND ITS NOT JUST FOR PSYCHIC COMBAT.

FIND A NICE, QUIET PLACE TO REST. YOUR BODY DOESN'T NEED A NAP, BUT AFTER EVERYTHING YOU'VE BEEN THROUGH YOUR MIND COULD USE ONE.

KEEP WALKING. EAT WHILE YOU WALK. YOU HAVE TO BE STRONG ABOUT THIS.

KEEP WALKING, BUT DON'T EAT. NOT RIGHT NOW.

WHAT DO YOU CHOOSE?
>>
>>448732
Time to rest. Give our mind a break.

>>
>Keep walking, don't eat

You continue your weary trek. But you don't eat. The grass is nice to look at, nice to feel. It becomes thicker. Soon you see trees merely bent by the blast. Soon you see trees untouched by the grass.

Soon you see flowers. And moss. And hear cicadas hum. And for awhile you walk in a place that doesn't know or care about the carnage, about Manus, about Bloodion, about any of that.

Your brief walking daydream ends when you find the highway. Now you have to think about things. Rook said to get to a city and lay low. If you walk along the highway someone is going to stop for a naked woman. And you wouldn't have to wait long for a car. People are going to be driving from Fuji trying to get away from the fallout. Country road or not you'll find a car in minutes if you kept walking alongside the road.

But maybe it would be best not to involve an innocent in your problems. They're going to ask you why you're walking around naked. That's not a conversation you're looking forward to.

It's not long before a homely Toyota truck pulls along side you. As the window rolls down you do your best to preserve what little modesty you have left with your arms.

The face behind the window is that of youthful male, with a pale complexion unsuited for the countryside. He stares at you in horror and struggles to find words, eyes struggling and failing not to look at you.

"Ma'm...um....um....did something happen? Do you need the police?"

You suppose you do look like someone that was raped and left for dead.

"Um...um...I have a-a shirt here. My shirt...D-Do you want it?"

He seems to be a nice person. He's actually offering you the shirt off his back.

"Please get in my truck Ma'm. The news said you're not supposed to be out here. There's radiation. You know, from the bomb?"

You nod. Oh yes, you know about the bomb.

He awkwardly hands you his shirt and you put it on. You suppose its something for your dignity. You're a small slender woman. A man's shirt is just large enough to cover everything.

The shirt has a cartoon on it. Some kind of pirate looking character with an eye patch standing on a ship, but the ship is floating in what looks like outer space...

You don't know what it is. You don't watch cartoons. You grew out of that.

"I was out here." You begin to explain. "There was a flash and a sound like thunder and then I woke up."

Its not really a lie.

The young man nods gravely. "I understand...I think we should take you to the hospital though. They're crowded. It happened so suddenly and everyone's scared of radiation and I'm sorry about the inconvenience but you must go to a hospital." He says firmly. "Please get in my truck."

You do. A hospital is in a city. You probably won't stay there. But hospitals are easy enough to walk out of.

You cross your legs and smooth out the shirt. You're still a human woman, your Manu side be damned.

The young man keeps his eyes straight ahead and blushes. "Thank you for getting in. Its not safe out here in the woods. I'm sure the bomb has made the animals panic like its made us. Wolves and things are moving about, I'm sure of it."

No. Animals won't mess with you for 12 hours following a transformation. The lingering after-effects cause you to register as something strange and powerful to their senses. You remember that, in pieces. You remember a test they did with a recently transformed human Manu and a dog in a cage.

The dog threw itself against the cage until it died.

There's something else...something in what he said is sparking your memory...

"Talk to me about the wolves!"

"Okay well, I guess it was cool how they brought them back a few years ago. Real Japanese wolves, or at least as close as they could get them..."

"Who brought the wolves back?"

"Uh...Gene Mark. You know, that American company?"

Gene Mark. The word echoes in your mind.

That's one of the companies. One of the companies under the control of the Vaivasvata network.

Did you work there? You did biochemistry, you might have. It feels important to you...

"My name is Dr. Shirow." You say suddenly hoping he might know who you are. You were in line for the noble prize.

"You're a doctor? No way! I mean, you look so pretty for a doctor and um...oh..." He blushes in embarrassment.

So he doesn't know. You suppose its not so surprising. The Noble Prize isn't like a sporting event. Average people don't keep track of them.

You smile. You can't remember when the last time you smile was. "I like it. It is a pretty name, isn't it?"

It feels good to smile.

The young man awkwardly returns your smile. "Y-yeah..."

"What's your name by the way?"

"I'm Ishinomori. Leiji Ishinomori."

"What are you doing out here Ishinomori? Trying to escape the radiation?"

"No. I'm not from around here, I'm from Tokyo actually. I just have family out here and I was traveling out here to visit and...then the bomb hit. It's crazy to say isn't it? A third bomb in Japan. No one knows where its came from. We just hope it won't be the start to world war 3..."

There's no way that'll happen. Vaivasvata will find a way to spin the nuke into something palatable for the world. They have enough connections to do that. They won't let the world be destroyed. They need humanity to be their bodies.

"It won't happen." You say. "Humanity isn't going to kill itself over this."

"I sure hope so. I guess it could have been worse. If this had been Washington or Moscow I doubt anyone would be alive now...but anyway, I ran into some civil service people on the road and sense I know the area because I grew up here and I have my truck here I thought I could...you know, offer to help out a little. There are a lot of old timers out here in the countryside you know? They might not know what's happened, might need some help. Some of them don't even have cars you know?"

"That's very brave and kind of you." You compliment.

"I'm just doing what anyone does in a disaster like this."

A disaster that you caused.

You can't help but feel some guilt. They send the nuke after you. To kill you. It didn't do more than hurt a little like a bug bite.

But for all these other innocents it ruined their lives. God knows how many people are going to develop cancer from this.

This was all just for you...

"Hey...its okay. Don't be sad." Leiji says. "I know it seems bad but I think you're right. I really do. Humanity will pull through this."

"You're a good man Leiji. Not everyone believes in humanity like you."

Wasn't the whole project grounded in a cynical condemnation of humanity? We needed Manus to carry on the human legacy on the other side of the gravity gate. We needed another Earth because we didn't think we could protect this one.

You wonder what this optimistic young man would think about the Vaivasvata project?

You come across a roadside convenience store abandoned in the panic. You're hungry-not just HUNGRY. Your vestigial human desire for food is making your stomach rumble. You don't -need- food, but you feel like you do.

You could ask Leiji to stop and get some food. And if its electrically powered you could FEED and lower your HUNGER.

A lock won't stop you. Even in your human disguise you have enough strength to break down a door.

You open the door and step out.

"Uh hey, shouldn't we leave some money? I got some in my wallet right here, I can pay for it..." Leiji follows behind you.

"Stay in the car Ishinomori." You say.

"Why do you want me to stay Dr. Shirow?"

"Can you keep a secret?"

"A secret? Yeah I guess...I'm not sure what you're getting at though. You're acting kind of strange...I mean, even for a woman that came out of the woods..."

"Everything is okay Ishinomori...Leiji...there are things going on that I don't entirely understnad myself but everything is going to be okay."

He stares at you, fear creeping into his eyes.

"Just...please don't leave. Stay here in the truck and do not come out until I come back."

He nods.

"Promise me." You say.

"I promise."

You head into the store before things can get even more painfully awkward. Leiji was right, there is a padlock on the door. You grab it and it breaks apart like paper in your hands. You push the door in to find an old country store on the inside with wooden floors and glass jars full of cheap sweets. You start on your human hunger with the candy-taffy and kit kats and pocky, you aren't picky you just stuff your face with whatever is at hand.

It feels great to eat something again.

This is one of the fun things about being a Manu. Your metabolism allows you to eat anything and remain healthy. You haven't touched a salad sense you've became one, and you've developed a rather embarrassing sweet tooth.

They used to tease you about that...

You remember that they used to tease you about your sweet tooth...

They...who were they? Coworkers? Allies? Friends?

Gene Mark...and friends. And if not friends then at least people who know you.

You're going to have to investigate Gene Mark when you get a chance. Maybe the city will have a branch office somewhere?

You can feel your hunger kick up in the presence of the electricity running through the wires of the store. Its like how an animal salivates in the presence of food.

You see no reason to deny your hunger. You look through the window to make sure Leiji is still in his truck...and then you feed.

STATUS:

SATIATED

The light bulbs in the store explode with a loud popping sound as you tap the local power grid for energy. You're careful not to step on the glass as you make your way out of the darkness of the store and back into daylight, arms loaded with candy.

You feel great. Even the sight of the dead powdered grass a few feet from the building can't rob you of the feeling of SATIATION.

You climb back into the truck and find Leiji staring at you, face almost completely pale. "...What happened inside there?" He asks. "I mean to the lights?"

"I tripped an alarm and I kind of blew the fuses out to turn it off." You lie.

"It sounded like the light bulbs exploded..."

"They did. Must've been feedback."

"I didn't know that could happen..."

"World gets stranger everyday. That is a fact Leiji."

He drives on in silence, glancing back only once at the convenience store.

If he notices the ring of dust around it he doesn't say anything about it.

Sucks bro. 11 and above would have given a different outcome.

You begin to look out the window and daze as Leiji drives on.

God knows what he thinks about you now. But it doesn't matter. Once he gets to the city you can leave him. You can bury yourself in the shadow war against the Matsyas and you'll be the weird woman he helped that one time.

It'll be better that way, you tell yourself. Optimists don't make it in your world. You have no memory, no image to connect to that sentiment but you know it to be true.

You'll be protecting him by forgetting all about him.

He slams on the brakes and you feel the seat belt jam into your chest.

You look out through the windshield and see a bald Caucasian man with sunglasses and a fine black suit with a red tie.

He stands on air a few feet off the road.

He straightens his tie and looks straight at you.

"He-he-he's floating!" Leiji stammers white as a sheet. "Floating off of the ground!"

The man points to you, then jabs his finger at the ground besides him.

He wants you to come out.

And there is no shame in running. Not from this. Not from this."

Leiji nods slowly. "Just tell me...what...what are you?"

"I was the last hope of mankind. And I'm hoping I still am." You fling the door open. "Goodbye Leiji. Go and live now."

The truck turns around and you hear the tires screech as Leiji takes off.

You stand in a cloud of dust wearing his shirt. A floating man looks down on you. His lips curl into a sneer.

You tell yourself that you just saved Leiji's life.

But you wish he was here with you.

"Why do you wear that ridiculous woman suit Beetalion?" The man says in a voice dripping with contempt.

"Who the fuck are you?"

He slowly brings his hand to his chest. "A friend."

"That means nothing to me who the FUCK are you?"

"I am what you told the human Beetalion. I was the last hope of humanity, and I hope that I still am."

"So you're what? Another of Vaivasvata's Manus? A traitor? You guys didn't get the message after I tanked your nuke and ate Bloodion?"

"I am not here to fight Beetalion."

"Dr. Shirow!" You snap. "My name is Dr. Shirow!"

"My apologies then." He gives a low, almost mocking bow. "Dr. Shirow. I am not Manu. I am Matsya."

You think back to what Rook said about Matsyas.

They're beings trapped between worlds. They showed people how to build Manus. How to build the gravity gate. They were always here on Earth...what did Rook mean by that?

It doesn't matter. They betrayed humanity. They think we're unfit go to the new world. They want to use our bodies to live again, change humanity to be better vessels. They took over Vaivasvata. "Like Manchurian Candidate meets Exorcist" Rook said. Many Manus have sided with them...

Nothing you know makes you want to trust this guy.

"And for your information that nuclear weapon was not Vaivasvata's doing. It was the Chinese. We would never have been stupid enough to use such a primitive weapon against a Manu. But your rampage attracted attention and humans being humans they went into a panic. I assure you we have the matter well in hand however. There will be no nuclear Armageddon on our watch."

"Don't want humanity to die before you can use it for our new bodies?"

"Ah...so you do remember some things. We were concerned the ATS..but it doesn't matter. Bloodion was our doing, yes, but not MY doing. There is division even among us. But you have convinced the more belligerent elements of our side that you can only be removed at a great cost. We no longer wish to fight you."

"Good. Then fuck off."

"I'm afraid I cannot leave. You see, we cannot trust you. You might join with the remnants or the others."

"Join us Beetalion. Please. It would be such a waste for me to have to destroy you."

"You want to turn humanity into suits for your race to wear. That's not something I support."

"We simply wish to give them the guardian spirits and angels they've always wanted. We do not seek to replace them out of their bodies. We simply want to live within them, guide them, protect them, love them."

"A psychic master for every human? No. You guys lost your bodies. That doesn't mean you get to steal ours."

He frowns. ""Our"? Do not be absurd Beetalion. You are Manu. Not human."

"I remember I became a Manu to help humanity. Not to turn my back on it."

"What we seek to do is the ultimate help. It is no different than what you wanted to do. You wanted to save humanity from itself, and so do we. You sought however to treat the symptoms of the human disease. We treat the disease directly."

"You joined us remember?" The man says. "We didn't even have to ask you. You sought us out. Like so many others..."

His words...they have a painful familiarity!

Are they true? They feel true...they feel true!

"Poor Beetalion. You think you are alone but you are not. You are not alone. You are of the flock. You are loved."

Why do you feel like...this is a friend? He's not. He's a mind rapist! He's an alien body snatcher!

You fall to your knees. You clutch your pounding head. The tears stream from your eyes.

"You and others have sought us out in ages past in the stars and sky and even within yourselves. You sought us out in the quiet places and in altered states of consciousness. You sought us out on your knees, begging for our help. But we could only appear to you in shadows and talk to you in whispers. Until the Besant was finished that is..."

Images erupt in your mind. A church. An alter. A prayer. You on your knees looking up at infinite light...

"Beetalion...you prayed for us to come on your knees, and now we are here." He hovers above you and lowers a hand.

There is infinite light in his eyes...

"Now that we have answer your prayers would you turn us, the last hope for mankind, away?"

Your muscles tighten and grow into mighty engines of destruction.

You apply the repulsion and the attraction forces to shake him apart. Against someone with a normal human body this would disintegrate them, their mass utterly annihilated by the vibrations.

But the Matsya isn't riding around in a normal human body...

He begins to shake but he doesn't dissolve....instead his skin begins to glow a brilliant gold and you can feel his fingers grip your horn...

MATSYA THUNDERER

MANU DISCIPLE GOLDMAN

The air explodes in a high whine as he does...something...to his body to cause your vibrations to funnel out of his body and into the surrounding air.

He places his feet against your head and kicks off, freeing himself from the horn, gold chunks falling to the ground as he tears away.

He stare him down as he lands a few feet away. You can see bits of him still dangling from your horn.

You tear a piece away. It feels soft. It has a lot of give to it.

He transformed himself into a living sonic super-insulator...

You can see down the rest of the road through the hole in his chest. Goldman doesn't seem to mind though as he stares at you. "You are a fool to reject my lord's offer Beetalion. You're fighting Manu and Matsya combined in one body! There is no way you can win!"

Just kidding. No crit fails in this quest.

You grind furrows into the road as you push Goldman's ankles down into it and push him. He grits his teeth and you notice it's becoming harder to push him, he's pushing back with more and more force...

His arms are bulging. The hand you feel is cold and metallic and hard, not at all like the soft material he formed himself into to survive your climatic thrust.

Kinetic Adaptation. He's a next generation Manu. You remember people talking about it. They were excited that Manus could survive the gravity gate and wondered if they could make a Manu that could survive other environments-all environments potentially.

It makes sense a Matsya would ride around in someone top of the line...

His arms and legs are enormous. You stop. Your forces are equalized.

"You can't tear me apart, animal!" Goldman yells. "You can't shatter me, you can't crush me and you can't bleed me! I am the invincible tool of my master!"

But you are a scientist as well as a monster.

And you have an experiment you want to try...

You release one of his hands and grab the other and SLAM him down on the road. Asphalt flies like shrapnel. You pull his arm, you kick his arm, you bite his arm.

Just that one arm.

It swells up massively. A good third of him is in that arm now, if not more. "So you CAN think. But it won't stop me!" He says as he struggles to move with so much of his weight and mass lopsided.

His eyes begin to flash...

>brakes

No brakes in this quest. You can BAD END at any time. You must fight for every bit of peace, every bit of happiness.

You hear a series of booms behind you as pressurized air waves chase you into space.

You look behind you and see a collection of bright, white stars brighter than the stars above flash into existence and then wink out. Its a Jacob's ladder of lights and you stand at the top.

You stand at the top safe, whole, covered in your own frozen red blood, but safe.

There's not enough air at the threshold of outer space for you to scream, so you scream in silence. You scream in rage, in pain, and in victory. Your frozen blood cracks and flakes as you shout your victory at the world below.

Again they send death at you. And again you stand alive, alone.

It's easy to find your way back to where you took off. Manus were made to travel in and out of the gravity gate. They have an incredible sense of direction that puts Earth's animals to shame.

You crash down to Earth and make a second crater by the one you left Goldman in.

The son of bitch exploded. There's nothing but an even larger hole left. There's noting to DEVOUR....

...but wait. There is.

The Matsya, Thunderer, he's still here...you can feel him.

You feel his disorientation. And his fear. He did not expect you to come back down to Earth.

Disembodied he can't manifest to your Besant as anything other than a collection of impressions and feelings. But you imagine he'd be making a lot of excuses and even more promises if he could articulate them...

Matsyas are packets of intelligent energy suspended in the Besant waves between worlds.

You consume energy.

You can eat him.

You can also let him go.

You have several options:

ABSORB THUNDERER INTO YOUR MIND. RISKY, BUT YOU'LL BE ABLE TO CONTROL HIM AND MAKE YOU HIS MIND SLAVE UNLESS EXTREME HUNGER SAPS YOUR WILLPOWER. HE COULD BE INTERROGATED FOR ANSWERS.

DEVOUR HIM. YOU WONDER HOW A GOD TASTES.

LET HIM GO. IN HIS OWN WARPED WAY HE'S TRYING TO HELP HUMANITY. SHOW HIM HE'S WRONG ABOUT HUMANS BEING UNDESERVING OF THE EARTH AND EARTHS BEYOND THE GRAVITY GATE.

"Fly away. And if I ever see you again I will eat you. And you will die like an animal, devoured by an animal."

The matsya vanishes into the ether of the Besant waves.

And you are left alone again, alive again.

The destroyed highway is quiet. You can heat the wind rustling in the trees and knocking bit of gravel down into the craters.

You climb out, trailing blood as you go.

You need to stabilize yourself before you put on your human disguise. You reach out and FEED. The trees of the forest rot and fall as in in a sound like a bomb burst. It's not enough to repair your wounds, but it is enough to put on your disguise.

You change in a cloud of black smoke. Your armor hisses off your soft frail skin. You feel sick. The damage is still inside you within your true form.

You can either self-cannabalize to heal yourself and increase your hunger to FAMISHING or you can start walking out and eating more of the forest, but that runs the risk of attracting people. You'll also kill EVEN MORE of the forests of Mt. Fuji, and its going to stress you out.

You look at the woods full of trees older than you are and decide to spare it.

You are worthy of this world, and the worlds beyond, even when the ugly craters and dead trees scream at you that you're not.

You will take care of your home.

You walk, stumbling, down the road. Bits of gravel press uncomfortably into your soles. But the canopy of leaves above you block out the hot sun.

"It is only a little pain." You say to yourself, longing to hear another human voice. "And it is only on the inside."

Your words echo through the trees in response. They tell you that you are alone again, alive again.

You continue down the highway. After all, there's a city somewhere on Earth in that direction and Rook said to get yourself to a city, not only for your protection but the protection of innocents. Vaivasvata and its related organizations have been taken over by the Matsyas. They want to protect humanity. They love humans. They would never try to fight you in the middle of a crowded city.

Who would be their bodies then?

Up ahead you can see what looks like white tarp tents covering a collection of ambulances and police cars. Its probably a makeshift triage center to treat fallout victims throughout the Fuji countryside.

You wonder what they thought of your battle with Goldman. The stairway of stars Goldman tried to kill you with isn't like a mushroom cloud. No conventional weapon could ever do something like that.

Vaivasvata is probably doing something behind the scenes to explain away your fight with Goldman. Terrorists with experimental weaponry or science experiments gone wrong, something like that no doubt.

STAY TO THE WOODS. AVOID THE TRIAGE CENTER. YOU'LL JUST GET ATTACHED TO THEM LIKE LEIJI AND WANT TO STAY WITH THEM AND PUT THE IN DANGER.

>Go to the triage center

You need a ride...and human contact, if just for a little while.

You hear people talking as you approach. "Aliens. It has to be. They're testing us."

"What do you mean?"

"I mean this whole thing is a test. They're throwing nukes and whatever that thing in the sky was at us but they aren't hurting us."

"You call this fallout harmless?"

"But I mean it was over a forest, not a city. They're trying to scare us to see what we'll do."

"Maybe they're just trying to get us to kill ourselves. Like that Twilight Zone episode."

"News said it was some kind of terrorist organization pissed about the cold war, why do you have to bring aliens into it?"

"Because it doesn't make sense! How did terrorist get...whatever it was in the sky?"

"News said they're like, brilliant scientists or something."

"Where did they get the material to MAKE that stuff though?"

"So aliens are a likelier story? Because you don't know how they made the bombs?"

"Nooooo I'm saying its a matter of resources. Like, the stuff they use to make nukes isn't exactly at a store you know."

"Maybe its a global conspiracy. East and West want a way to bow out gracefully from the cold war so they manufacturer a common enemy, these terrorists...."

Vaivasvata is doing its job. You hear a lot of talk and none of it is about gravity gates, manus, or matsyas. Aliens, global conspiracies, terrorists-all are true in part. And only in part.

Naturally everyone stops what they're doing when they see a naked, battered woman walk up to them. A police officer drapes a hefty blanket around you and you thank him for it.

Its warm.

A female EMT takes you under a tent and takes your pulse and shines a penlight in your eyes and asks you questions.

"Can you hear me?"

"Yes."

"What happened to you? Do you want to talk about it?"

"There was a bright light. Then I woke up. I can't remember anything else."

She waves a radiation scanner over you and nods grimly at the results.

"Take these." She hands you a tiny paper cup of water and several radiation scrubber pills. "You've absorbed a good deal of radiation. You'll have to stay at a hospital for a while. Odds are you'll develop a cancer."

You stare admiringly at this woman. Here she is out here soaking up radiation of her own helping people like you.

And they said humanity needed to be save from itself...

"I'm sorry. Cancer isn't as bad as it was a decade ago. You'll pull through, I'm sure of it."

You're actively harming her body with your presence and she's sorry?

"You are a good person." You say.

"I'm only trying to help."

Leiji said the same thing.

"I mean it. You're a good woman."

"Thank you. I know you can't remember much, but can you tell me your name?"

I can see why though. Do we become sentimental about the only given name we have? It's probably not our real given name, but it was given to us by a friend. Or do we accept that such things are fleeting and cling to one of the few definite memories we have, that we are Dr Shirow?

>>
>>457578
The intention was to give both names with the Yuki option. We really have no reason not to say the one name we know is ours.
>>
"My name is...Dr. Shirow. Yuki Shirow."

You mentally slap yourself for being so sentimental. You tell yourself to grow up. Yuki isn't your name. It's just a name Leiji called you.

But its still a name. Why can't it be your name?

"Oh? You are a doctor?"

"Biochemistry."

"Really? That's very impressive. What school?" She says taking your blood pressure.

You can't remember. She can see the aggravation on your face.

"You can't remember, can you?" She says sadly. "That's alright. This happens sometimes in the cases of extreme trauma. I'm sure it'll come back to you."

She has no idea how extreme we're talking about. And neither do you frankly. Rook wasn't forthcoming with what happened at Fuji base.

Given how he was insistent it "wasn't your fault" and what Thunderer said about a "temper tantrum" you aren't sure you want to know what happened.

A female police officer pushes back a flap of tarp and enters the tent. She carries a bundle of clothes with her. "Excuse me Ma'm." She says placing the bundle of clothes on a table next to you. "We're aren't sure of your size but we think these might fit you. Its all we could find for you, I'm sorry."

You eye the bundle thankfully. You're so happy all you can do is nod is nod your thanks to officer.

You dress yourself. The shirt and pants are baggy. They're probably for men. The shoes are an odd fit.The underwear is far from supportive. But they're clothes. After walking around naked for so long with nothing but a T-shirt or torn lab coat you can't complain. You feel a little more like a human now and less like the covering of an insect monster.

Now if you can only get a shower you swear you'd never want for anything ever again...

"You people should have radiation suits out here. Why don't you?" You try to strike up a conversation with the doctor.

"There was no time." She explains. "The bomb went off and its not like we have them just hanging around in the local hospitals and police stations. This isn't America or the USSR you know. We didn't think there would ever be a third..."

"So you just came out here?"

"Someone has to help the people here. We can't just leave them on their own."

The way she ways that...you're sure you heard something similar a long time ago...

The words spark your memory...

PAINFUL MEMORIES THEME:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5_CKO_NBzG4

Your head hurts...

"Someone has to help humanity. They can't be trusted to survive on their own."

Someone said that. Did you say that?

"Look at them. They're like children. They cling to your nukes like safety blankets. But if you had found a knife in a toddler's crib you'd take it out right?"

Impressions assault you. A secret meeting. You shouldn't be there. A feeling of...not doing enough.

Are you speaking or listening?

You don't know.

"We're to go through the gravity gate, the best and brightest protected in invincible Manu bodies. We're to make sure humanity continues somewhere in the universe in case of a nuclear exchange. Is that something we can be proud of? We just turn our backs on humanity and let them kill themselves?"

What was being said was important. This was an important meeting. Its dangerous to be here. Not everyone agrees.

Are you saying these things? Are you?

"We need to take the knife out of the crib. And if won't give up their nukes..."

"...If they won't give up their nukes..."

God your head hurts...

"...the blood will be on their hands..."

"Yuki! Yuki! What's wrong? Speak to me!" She shakes you.

You snap back to reality in a cold sweat.

"I'm sorry...I'm sorry." You gasp. "I'm just...shaken up. Bad memories."

"Did you see the blast?"

"Yes."

"Lie down here." She says leading you a to makeshift bed. "I'll go get you some water."

You lie down. It helps a little.

"Wait." You say as she starts to leave the tent. "What is your name?"

"My name? Oh, I'm sorry." She says with a little apologetic bow. "I should have said. I'm Dr. Miyako Matsumoto. Now you get some rest. I'll be right back."

You rest your head on your pillow.

Today has been a busy, we could use some sleep.
>>
You close your eyes and you're off to sleep even before Miyako can get back with the water.

You dream of a conversation.

Their voices feel familiar.

"There's only three sides here. Only one can be on top. Humans, Manus, or Matsyas." The voice is strong, masculine.

"Why can't we go back to how it was? When we just wanted to explore Avalon and the gravity gate, when we didn't have these...politics." The voice is nervous, feminine.

"Because that side is gone. It's way past gone. There's no fourth side to this. Humans, Manus, and Matsyas. That's it.Listen. I'm not going to force you to pick a side. Time will do that all on its own. But just listen. Humans are helpless idiots. You know what they'd do if they could create Manus? They'd make them into super-soldier weapons. Or they'd built a bomb that could actually kill us. The Matsyas are just as bad with their infighting. And now the ruling half says lets take over the world and start putting ourselves in people's heads like imaginary friends. But what happens if the Matsyas have another rebellion and the power swings back to the other side? Would they kick the body jackers out? Kill them outright and take the humans with them? I'm telling you they're loopy from all that time spent in the Besant fields. So that leaves us. That leaves the Manus. We have to trust ourselves because we're all we can trust."

"God...I want to go back years ago, back before the Matsya war, back when we were all on the same side. Remember how great it was? We weren't alone in the world anymore when we found the Matsyas. They were our friends and they were waiting for us, watching us like guardian angels for all of human history. And we were going to go to Avalon together, a beautiful world without nukes or war or anything. Now...now...now everyone just argues and fights and they're getting so mad and so heated. I'm scared Kiyoshi. I'm really scared. I'm scared we're going to start fighting each other. We were friends and now we're going to fight each other."

"No. Not fight each other. Kill each other."

Kiyoshi....someone was named Kiyoshi...

MIND: 5

You wake up in a hospital bed. They must have transferred you while you slept. The mysterious conversation you dreamed about bothers you. Was that a memory or was it just a dream? Was it just your mind trying to make sense of things?

You have so many questions for Rook. You hope he'll contact you soon. You'll have to ask him who "Kiyoshi" is.

Your feet are bare, someone took your shoes off, but you're still wearing the same clothes from the triage center. The blanket is warm and the covers soft. You want to close your eyes and go back to sleep but you can't stay here.

If someone examined you too closely they'd find that there's an awful lot of strange things about your body chemistry...

Little metal probes are stuck to your chest. Wires lead out under your over-sized shirt. You yank them off you're sure something is going to beep.

It's not like any orderly could stop you. You could hold back a grown man with your fingertips.

A wave of sadness suddenly catches up with you. You never got to say good bye to Miyako...

"Why does that matter?"You say to yourself. "Foolish girl what do you plan on doing? Lie to her and lie again until she's terrified of you like Leiji was?"

...But maybe you don't have to lie.

You look at the window and see a citysape of modest towers and busy traffic.

You're in a city. Rook said you'd be safe now...

You don't have any other place you need to be, and this bed is so soft and nice...you could tell the doctors here. You could tell them your secret. Maybe Miyako works here and you could see her again? You could talk to them about science and chemistry and maybe the conversation will jar new memories loose....

"But isn't that selfish?" You scold yourself. "Dragging innocents into this shadow war you barely know about yourself. Grow up Yuki."

A shiver runs down your spine. "And who is to say you're safe to be around yourself?"

"But on the other hand...people like Miyako and Leiji, they want to help people. And I need help..."

The door is locked.

A quick glance at the chart on your bed tells you why.

They ordered a blood test.

Now they know.

You push your shoulder to the door and knock it off its hinges. Outside a cop napping against the wall jumps to awareness.

He looks at you, and then the door, and then you again.

"D-Dr. Shirow...you're awake..." His hand moves toward a firearm holstered to his side.

Japanese cops don't normally carry sidearms. But if they have an idea of what you are they might.

He blushes in embarrassment and tears his hand away. "I-I'm sorry...I didn't mean to...damn it, to think I was ready to draw a gun on a woman..."

"It's alright..." You edge away from him. "I have to go now."

She was probably crunching numbers on the paper, trying to figure out what exactly the red stuff she drew out of your arm is.

You step toward her. You got to go past her.

She steps back. "I-I took your blood..." She stammers. "It-It's not blood...you don't have blood..."

"I know." You step forward and again she flinches. "I'm not going to hurt you. I just need to get by. I need to leave."

You walk aimlessly through the city, a stranger among strangers. Mushroom clouds are on the front pages of all the newspapers. An emergency UN security council meeting is on all the televisions. Fear is on every face.

Your melancholy expression weighing down your face blends you right on in with the crowd.

You find yourself on a bridge overlooking the sun sparkling on the blue waters of a bay. Cars speed past behind you and the breeze sweeps your hair to the side.

You feel like you did back in the woods. You feel at peace. The sun and water doesn't know or care about Manus or nukes or anything. They just are.

You sigh and for a moment you just are. You're an eyeball filled with scintillating water and an orange sunset.

But only for a moment.

"Goddamn it Rook..." You mumble to yourself. "Where the fuck are you..."

Knowing your luck the Matsyas probably got him. But what do you do then? Just live like a vagrant in the city's shadows taking trips to the countryside to FEED?

Fun fun fun. You can't wait to eat out of dumpsters and sleep on benches for the rest of your life. That's one way to make use of a PHD.

If Rook doesn't call tonight you'll look up the nearest Gene Mark installation and investigate. You have memories of the organization. Maybe you worked there. Maybe someone there knows you.

Maybe you'll fall into a Vaivasvata trap and Bloodion will have his revenge. Hey, if that happens at least you don't have to worry about being a vagrant anymore...

He's unkempt and kind of smells, but so do you, so you make a good match.

You kneel down and pet its head. "Good to see a fellow lost soul.

"Oh hey there Captain Wow!" A man's voice makes you jump up. "You finally found one of the Fuji people!"

A man comes running up to you, a bald black wearing a leather biker jacket. The dog greets him with a woof and trots to his side.

"Don't tell me you betrayed me dog." You mumble. "I was starting to like you..."

"Hey there Fuji girl!" The man waves at you. "Glad to finally see one of you. Do you know where the others are?"

"Who the FUCK are you?"

"Name's Cordwainer, and this is Captain Wow." He kneels down and gives the dog a hearty hug. "Good boy...Jommy's gonna be relieved we found one."

"No serious who the FUCK are you?" He seems friendly, but there's no way you're letting your guard down.

"Hey now, chill out. I'm a friend."

"You work for Vaivasvata? The Matsyas? If you're one of their assassins I'll kill you!"

He grins. "Naw. Don't you guys keep files on us? We're the other other guys."

Other? Thunderer said something about "others"...

"I almost killed Bloodion and killed Goldman. Don't fuck around with me."

The man whistles. "Shit. So you were why we had that nuke and that staircase-made-of-starts-thing. You wrecked Bloodion? And one of their Goldmen?"

One?

"You must have a real kick-ass Manu form!"

"I"m the three-way love-child of a fighter jet, a tank, and a beetle. And I. Will. Kill you if I even THINK you're trying to kill me! Understand?"

Captain Wow whimpers. "Hey now cut it out. You're scaring my dog."

"Your dog?" You eye Captain Wow cautiously. "How does a Manu keep a dog?"

"Captain Wow here isn't like other dogs. He's my back-up brain."

"So its a weapon..."

"Naw, he's a dog. He's just very good at taking care of his buddies." He affectionately nuzzles the white dog. "So we cool? Not going to try and kill us beetle-jet-tank lady?"

"So you don't know where the other Fuji Manus are?"

"I don't even know if anyone but me is alive."

"Shit. Well that nuke means the secrets out to the normies. Part of it anyway. They knew enough to know to be scared enough to try and nuke you but not enough to know it wasn't going to do anything but piss you off."

And destroy your coat. Which might have had an ID or wallet come to think of it.

"Not that it matters much anyway. No way the Mats are going to let them drop another nuke...Aw man this isn't good. We were really hoping you all could help us out. Other bases have gone dark but when Fuji went boom it went BOOM-enough so that even the Chinese took notice. We were hoping maybe the Mats found some resistance here."

"They found me."

"Yeah but we were hoping for more than just one little Japanese lady. We were hoping for like, a militia or something. Oh well. You know I bet the Chinese know more about what happened then we do. Our stolen Russian satellites just saw the base on fire. But they saw enough Manus and weirdness to launch a nuke...you're pretty tough, I bet your Besant number is high as fuck. Tied vote. It may not seem like a big deal now, but remember this is your first contact with the rebel Manu faction. First impressions are important, but remember that associates and allies are not the same thing.

In case it's still a little unclear there are three factions in this quest. Vaivasvata which began as an organization creating manus that could survive the trip through the gravity gate to the pristine planet Avalon and carry on mankind in case of a nuclear apocalypse but is now taken over by the Matsya mind aliens that live between Earth and Avalon trapped in telepathic Beasant waves.

The remnants represented by Rook. They're what remains of the old order following the Matsya takeover.

And there's Cordwainers group, the rebels. They believe that they need to take over the world and get rid of all the nukes. They believe the remnants and Matsyas have given up on humanity. The other two factions in turn think the remnants are Manu supremists who want to deny humanity self rule.

We can join any or none of these factions, fight any or none of these factions.

The title if he episode refers to Yuki not only being a jet beetle tank but her being shaped by the struggle between the three factions.

"Hmmm...well that makes things a lot more complicated. I was hoping you'd be a moderate. Now I'm not sure. What if your memories start coming back and you find out you hate our guts and want us dead?"

"Cordwainer, I can't even remember my own name. I don't know if I was with your group or with the Matsyas or with the old Vaivasvata. I just don't know. But I promise you that I don't fuck up anyone that doesn't have it coming."

"Eh, but that's the problem. What if you suddenly decide me and my buddies and my dog have it coming."

You stop petting Captain Wow.

"So convince me you don't. We're back to me asking for information now.

"Hmmmm...." Cordwainer studies you intently. "Am I the first person you've talked to sense Fuji? I mean besides the guys that have tried to kill you?"

He told me about the nuke that fell on me and said he had to book because he was afraid the Mats were after him."

"So Rook was the one that was trying to contact you...I appreciate you being honest Ms..."

"Dr. Dr. Shirow." You aren't sure if you're ready to tell him your full "name" just yet.

"Well alright Dr. Shriow. I guess you deserve some truth now...we've been jamming Rook's signal."

Ah fuck. That's why its taking so long for him to get in contact.

"Captain Wow is the one doing it. It's one of his special talents."

You glare at Captain Wow who happily barks in your face. "You know dog you're making it real easy for me to hate you..."

Captain Wow licks your face.

"Why are you jamming his signal? We're under attack by the Mats and fragmented and you're killing his communications?"

"Well it wasn't my idea." Cordwainer says sheepishly. "Jommy gave the order. The idea is to heard you remnants around so you'll meet us on our terms. For instance I'm not alone in this city. I'm with three other Manus. Even you couldn't take us all on at once you know."

You give him a snarling look.

"We'd love to team up with you guys against the Mats. We just want to make sure you guys won't stick a knife in our back. And besides, Rook is a mother fucker." Cordwainer's features harden. "I don't want you listening to his bullshit. You know he got one of us killed? I bet he didn't tell you that anyway? No way in hell we're letting him unite the remnants under his banner."

"That's not my call to make. And even if it was I wouldn't. You got amnesia. You're confused. You can't trust your own memories, how are we supposed to trust you not to be lured in by Rook's bullshit?"

"Put. Him. On."

"We're PROTECTING YOU Doc. We got to protect all of you remnant idiots from yourselves sense the Mats cucked you out of your James Bond bases. We always knew you'd need us to save your sorry hides in the end. And first step of doing that is cutting you off from manipulative dicks like Rook."

Captain Wow looks at you, then his master, then back at you. He knows you both are shouting and unhappy but he doesn't know why.

"Then let's talk to him together! Stop jamming the signal and lets get all the secret bullshit I don't know about out in the open!"

"No. He'll say anything to get you on his side. Anything. That's what he does. Did I mention the part where he got one of us killed?"

"Oh, he got one of you killed?" You chuckle mockingly. "How many have you gotten killed, don't fucking try to say you're a bunch of saints who've survived this whole super alien bullshit invasion by turning the other cheek?"

"Oh babe..." Cordwainer shakes his head slowly. "You don't know shit. Rook put the crosshairs on my friend and your tank-sniper-turtle thing Tarkus pulled the trigger. All he was trying to do was stop the Russians from putting nukes on their satellites, satellites YOU guys helped them build thinking you could help the world by leaking Matsya tech."

"I don't know anything about any of this! Those names you're talking about, they mean NOTHING to me!"

"And that is why you are NOT talking to Rook!"

"ARGHHH!" You ball your fists. "So I'm just supposed to sit here and take your biased view of events as truth?"

"It IS the truth babe. Gospel truth."

"Stopping me from having contact with others isn't putting you in a position of trust exactly, you realize that much at least, right?"

"Ah hell Fuji girl..." Cordwainer kneels down and points both hands at Captain Wow. "...You mean to tell me you don't trust this face?"

"SHUT THE FUCK UP! Cut the comedy crap! Stop acting like I'm your friend or something, I'm NOT!"

"Jeeze...just trying to lighten the mood before you do something you'll regret Doc."

"Oh, something I'LL regret?"

"Yeah...look, you got three options. The first is that you come back to base with me nice and quiet like and we can get you some food and power to drain and we'll fill you in on things. The second is that you leave town and FEED in the countryside. Captain Wow can't puppy guard you forever. You'll have to keep your head low though. Bloodion is the type to hold a grudge. And the third thing you can do is act like a real bitch and try to alpha dog me. You want to handle this the Manu way you'll find yourself severely outclassed. I promise you that. "I bet you'll try as well Cordwainer..." You whisper to yourself as you walk away. "Except you won't know what it is you've done until I'm dead at your feet."

......

You leave the city like you found it. You pick a direction and start walking until you hit uninterrupted nature. In the calm shadows cast by tree branches over the setting sun you find a moment of ease and rest.

You stop, look around, and a strong feeling of self disgust turns your stomach and you start walking again.

There has to be something less beautiful to destroy.

You stop again. Not because you've found something less beautiful but because you realize you never will.

In an instant the trees groan and tumble into clouds of what once was grass. You were enclosed by trees. They surrounded you. You could have reached out and touched one.

Now you stand in a white and grey void, and the space is so heavy. The trees, once close enough that you could see the texture of the individual pieces of their bark like pieces of your armor, now are small and toy like in the distance.

HUNGER: SATIATED

...And in the sudden clearing you see a woman with a black leather jacket, blue jeans, and long feathered red hair.

"Well, you got your feel yet?' She says. She calmly starts to walk toward you, eyes forward and challenging, hands calmly in her jacket pockets.

She's very close to you now. You can tell she's rather punk. You think you remember girls like her in high school. None of them made it to college.

She's got rather heavy makeup on. Either no one taught her how to properly put it on or she's making some sort of fashion statement. Big hoop earrings dangle from her ears. You see a spiked bracelet on one wrist and a choker around her neck.

...That's not a dog collar is it?

"Well damn. I was never this popular in high school. You're one one the rebels?."

"Yeah. My dumb as fuck codename is C'Mell. But I'm Lauren. Lauren McTagert."

"Cordwainer said your boss wasn't going to let you follow me."

"Jommy just said that because he thinks you or the Mats are going to kill me. But I know better." She smirks as if challenging you. "I"m the toughest bitch around. There's not a Manu alive that scares me, including you Beetle bitch. But you don't need to get your panties in a bunch."

She reaches out and pats you on the shoulder. "You can help us fight back against the aliens. I'm not going to let you get killed when you can be of use to us."

"So you're out here waiting for Rook to talk to you huh?"

"Yeah."

"You shouldn't trust him ya know? He's not a good person. He killed one of our own."

"Cordwainer told me. Something to do with someone called Tarkus?"

"They used a Manu that can control gravitons to assassinate Manu named Elliot Garland. Sent him on a one way ticket to the moon. He was fucking around up there with some Russian satellites armed with Tsar Bombas. Rook found him and ratted him out and the conversation over the Besant got real nasty and Tarkus threw him into the moon. Made a new crater on the dark side."

You look up. "God damn...sometimes I really how powerful we are."

"Heh. I don't!"

"...You want to walk with me? Fill me in on a few things?" You gesture for her to come on. "Cordwainer tell you about my amnesia?"

"Yeah he did. And you don't need to ask. I'm not letting you out of my sights so you can get picked off by an alien."

She begins to walk with you as the two of you stumble your way over roots and logs and inclines. Neither or you were raised in the country. You walk aimlessly, the sound of your footsteps over dry leaves the noisiest thing in the forest.

"Explain things to me as if I were a total outsider to all this stuff."

"Well...I guess it starts wayyyy in the past. Like millions upon millions of years ago. Like before we evolved." C'Mell jabs a finger up at the sky. "There's a planet out there called Avalon and it's like our own. It's got all those right conditions to support life and for some reason sapient life evolved there before Earth."

"The Matsyas..."

"Yeah. The weren't always living voices in your head. Once they were flesh and blood like us. But they wrecked their planet, kind of like what's happening now with our own."

"And that's why you think its necessary to take things over? To prevent a disaster happening on Earth like it did on Avalon?"

"Woah woah woah." C'Mell stops dead in her tracks. "Let's get one thing straight here. We are NOT like the aliens, get me?" She stares you angrily in the eye.

"But you both want to take over the world."

"They want to stick their minds into every man, woman, and child on Earth like they're houses or something! We just want to get rid of nukes! We're nothing alike!" She strips off her jacket and holds it in her hand. "You bitch! They've killed people! People I care about! Amnesia is the only reason I'm not kicking your ass right this second. You better apologize right now!"

"I think you're more similar than you realize and I'm not going to apologize for pointing out the truth to you. I also think you put WAY too much stock in the words of the least informed party on the fucking planet."

She looks taken aback for a moment. She clearly didn't expect you to stand up to her.

Then you see stars as her fist collides with your face.

You tumble end over end and rise holding your nose.

Your face tingles as you pull your hands away and see blood.

"...Holy shit." You hear her mutter to herself.

Maybe she didn't mean to hit you that hard?

But when you look up at her she's all anger.

"Now are you going to fucking apologize?"

"No."

"You bitch!" She cocks her fist back but you stop her with a raised hand.

"Hold on. You really want to do this here? Where the Mats could jump us?"

She stops.

"This isn't the time nor the place but if you want to fight later I'll be happy to oblige you."

C'Mell blinks for a second before stifling a giggle. "Ha! Are you for real? You're a scientist. What do you know about fighting?"

"Human or Manu I'll take you on."

"Whatever nerd." She turns and begins to walk without offering you a hand up. "Come on."

You lean your head back and sniff down the blood.

"Did that make you feel any better?" You ask when you're beside her again.

"Fuck you."

An awkward minute passes before someone says something.

"So..." C'Mell begins. "Are you ready to apologize yet?"

"No."

"God damn it!" She yells. "You know I'm not going to let you off until you do!"

"What's wrong? Looking for a way out of fighting me?"

"Hahahahahah." She laughs dryly. "You know you got a lot of guts to talk to me like that. Don't go thinking that I'm going to let you go when everyone's watching and we're about to throw hands. And you better not run crying to the boys and tell them I'm the one that started this!"

"You sort of are." You sniff up a drip of blood. "You threw the first punch."

"Tch! Yeah, but you said the first dumbass thing! Cordwainer said you can barely remember your own name, what the hell are you doing making judgment calls about things anyway like you understand shit?"

"You really should be a lot more careful. Any more head trauma and I might not even remember my last name let alone my first. Then I'd be totally worthless to everyone and you'll have to get a new toy to fight over."

"There! Got it!"

"Fuck you." You say in a childish, playful tone."

You and C'Mell actually share a smile.

"So...before you interrupted me I was telling you about the aliens, the Matsyas. Well, right now Avalon is a pristine paradise. It's like Eden straight out of the Bible or something-you uh, know that Bible story?"

"I"m familiar with it."

"Well its like that. But that's because of time. Back a billion trillion years ago when the Earth was young and the Mats flesh and blood it was a pretty shit place to live. Wars were killing all the good land. People were running out of air to breathe. But they looked across the Besant waves-they're like these waves that are everywhere. Like planets and stars are island and they're water and sometimes the human brain can sense them. It's not important..."

You have to wonder how C'Mell became a Manu. She doesn't exactly strike you as "best of the best" material. You think she's talking about quantum mechanics with the Besant stuff but she sounds like she doesn't have much of a clue herself.

"Why you looking at me like that?" She says in response to your curious stare.

"Just paying attention."

"Well you stare really weird...so anyway, in desperation they used a real primitive version of the gravity gate to try and transport their race to our young planet. But they fucked up. They didn't know you had to transform something into a Manu before you sent them across the gravity gate. The Mats that weren't smashed into atomic particles got trapped between world in the Besant waves. They were like, immortal ghosts. Not dead but not alive. Cordwainer says its like being "trapped in the Phantom Zone" whatever the hell that is. Now enter evolution. Now enter humanity. They watch us grow our civilizations, make our technology, form our cultures, etc, etc. And the way the Mats tell it is real cute and sappy. We kept them from going insane. We gave them something to watch, something to hope for, something to draw inspiration from."

C'Mell clasps her hands together mockingly and continues in a swooning voice. "They refused to let themselves forget their science out of the hope that they might one day teach us poor humans their secrets. They talked to each other, told each other stories about their bright past on Avalon and the brighter future they hoped for humanity. They refused to surrender to the silence of the void all for the sake of this young vulnerable race they found across the stars.... Bullshit. They totally snapped in the Besant waves. People act surprise they turned on us. I don't know what they expected. I mean you can't be an intangible invisible ghost for millions of years and not go a little crazy right? I mean what do you think Beetles, do you think the Mats were always crazy?"

"You know I don't remember everything about my biology classes yet but I do remember blood is supposed to be on the inside..."

"Look I PROMISE I won't deck you okay? Just talk to me already..."

"Well...first of all I have these vague memories of there being some sort of Mats civil war? Like they were on our side and all this takeover stuff happened recently..."

"Well sure. Back when we were all on the same team they seemed alright. Russians were the first to really get a handle on the Besant stuff back in the sixties. They were the first to really converse with the Mats and from that initial contact Vaivasvata was created. They taught us about Avalon, about the gravity gate, and how to make Manus. Billions of years in the Besant fields was enough time for them to realize what went wrong the first time they tried the gravity gate. But they were always dicks. Do you know anything about pre-Vaivasvata contact with the Mats?"

"No. Don't have memories of that."

"Well it wasn't until the Russians that we figured out how Besant shit like telepathy and telekinesis work but the Besant was always there. Throughout history people could sometimes reach across it and sort of communicate with the Mats. People with weird brain chemistry and people on drugs or in altered states of consciousness were the ones most likely to make contact but even then it was never anything as clear as talking face to face to them. It was like sensing a presence in a dream. You could feel the Mats and they could feel you and you could sometimes project feelings and impressions of ideas but that was about it."

"Hang on. Are you telling me the Mats were like...the gods and angels of mythology?"

"Don't let Mass catch you saying that."

"Who's Mass?"

"Hopefully someone who isn't dead. An anthropologist. He thinks the Mats' impact on human history and culture is highly overrated. He thinks that even without them we would've had religion and mythology and whatnot. Its a cool idea, rarely do I agree with a Vaivasvata guy-or I guess Vaivasvata remnant now."

"Glad to hear you have a friend on the other side."

"Naw. He's not a friend. I'm just glad he isn't dead. He doesn't suck Mats dick and what's more he's a hell of powerful Manu. He can do this thing where things start emitting particles and then he controls those particles...but we can talk about him later."

>>
>>469657
"The thing is the Mats will tell you that they'e the truth behind what inspired Plato and Jesus and Mohammed and Buddha. They're everything good about philosophy and religion-but not the bad things! Never that! That's just us stupid humans failing to interpret their holy divine infallible perfect wisdom!"

You remember how fanatic Goldman was. He was willing to die to serve his Matsya. He probably felt he was serving a god...

"That's why Mass is kind of awesome even though he's on the other side. He calls bullshit whenever the Mats say they talked to Jesus or whatever. He says the communication would have been just as murky from their side as from ours."

They're not infallible. You know that, but its good to hear someone else say it. After that vision thing Thunderer threw at your mind you feel like you need to remind yourself they aren't gods...

"Look, you tell me that there are good and bad Mats and I'll tell you that there's just aggressive and passive Mats. They're all crazy. From the beginning they thought they were everyone's fucking parents. "We love you. We gave you philosophy. We gave you religion. We love you." Bunch of fuckers...sure, the Mats that took over are more aggressive, but they're just following their views to the logical conclusion. So now that I've told you about them you can see how bugfuck they are right?"

>>468761
>>468796

"I can see your point about them being...off. We don't know much about their society do we? For all we know they could've been a whole planet full of cannibals or done all kinds of insane shit."

"I know right? They always tell us they can't remember much about how Avalon used to be. No Mats has the same story about it. The only thing they can agree on is that they fucked it up and got trapped between worlds trying to jump to Earth."

"Just because they an speak to us doens't mean they care or even understand us, not truly."

"Right!" C'Mell agrees with an emphatic nod.

"They were never a part of humanity always only looking down on us from above. Just because they think they're doing good doesn't mean that they actually are."

"You know. That's how we feel about the old Vaivasvata. They sat apart from humanity doing secret shit with secret alien brain gods and yeah, occasionally they'd throw humanity some scientific scraps like the cure for cancer or better satellite tech. But tell them about Manus?Avalon? The Mats? Fuck no. "They aren't ready for the truth yet." And every time WE threatened to leak to the truth THEY threatened us with war!"

"They have no business getting involved in our politics or our future."

"Yeah!"

"How can you trust anyone who blew up their own planet once already? Just look at what their "help" has turned us into..." You state sadly. "Alien freaks who would consume all life on the planet in only a few years if I hadn't worked on the Bacti-batteries..."

"Oh come on." C'Mell shoves your shoulder. "You aren't any more of a freak than I am and I am NOT a freak."

"And I know you seem proud of the Bacti-batteries and they're handy but you know we'd only be a threat to Earth if there wasn't electricity and power stations right? We can always eat that stuff. You're probably thinking of Avalon. Before the Mats took over Vaivasvata they were working on on creating Bacti plant bases on the other side of the gravity gate. Otherwise you drop a bunch of Manus on Avalon without a place to recharge and the whole planet dies in like a month."

"A month?"

"Well I can't remember the exact figures. Its probably a lot longer than that. But you got to factor in energy hogs like Tarkus."

We are currently in our own neutral camp. But we need to start thinking of what side if any to join.

By the end of the episode we'll have to choose a side or choose to remain neutral.

The main plot of this OVA is going to be a three way hunt in Tokyo for a poweful telepath who can be converted into a god-tier Manu.

Tokyo is going to be sealed off in a dome. Manus will be fighting in the streets.
The side that gets their hands on the telepath is going to have a powerful weapon in the war.
>>
>>469859
no matter which side is right, or which side wins, us abominations are still here and more of a threat than any fanciful weapon ever developed. the only real way to win here is to fizzle out the besant and kill them all, destroy the gate and then off ourselves.

doesnt paint a pretty picture.

"Yeah. That field of ash you left back there? I can tell it bothers you a little. But its no big deal. I take in more energy when I FEED myself. You some kind of hippie?"

"No. I just don't let the idea of having to destroy beauty just to exist as a monster."

"You aren't a monster beetles. You're a Manu."

"I've been seen that way by humans. There was a truck driver, a good man, he was out there in the fallout trying to help people and I got a ride from him. When Goldman and Thunderer showed up I told him to turn around and run. I can still remember the fear in his eyes..."

She puts an arm around your neck and pulls you close. "Hey beetles, cheer up. That fear is only because they don't know us. We're weird to them. When we save the world by uniting it there won't be any secrets. Everyone will know we're the good guys."

"Uniting it through a forced peace? Even if you try to deny it it wouldn't it lead to humans viewing us as almighty beings of absolute power?"

C'Mell gives you a violent shove. "God damn it! Are you STILL on that "you're like the Matsyas" thing?"

You stumble and reel forward to regain your balance. "You say the Mats want to be everyone's parent. Isn't that what you're doing though by forcing them to remove their nukes?"

"So you'll force me to agree with you?"

"I...I" C'Mell stutters. "You don't know what you're saying. You got amnesia and its making you think stupid!"

"Maybe I do know what I'm saying. Maybe I'm a remnant? I might join them you know."

"Yeah...I guess you might be. You sure talk like a remnant. Look...I grew up in Gare Loch, Scotland. I grew up by a submarine pen. People stand outside it with signs protesting it to this day. You think the average person of the world wants nukes? You think the state of the world is safe? Sane? Everyone knows how fucked up it is to have Armageddon a false alarm away but no one can do anything because the idiot governments are in charge. We don't want to take over people. That's what the Mats want. We want to take over the insane governments of the world, the governments that are as detached from the average person as the remnants or Mats. Detached assholes with god complexes? That's what we're fighting!"

She jabs a finger in your chest. "Now do you understand THAT or are we going to have to go right here right now?"

Your eyes meet C'Mells blue ones. Her expression is soft with sympathy."Sorry....I'm sorry C'Mell."

"And I'm sorry to Beetles. It's got to suck just being so new to all this and having your memories jumbled. Its not right for me to just hit you for saying what you're thinking out loud. I know you don't agree with what we do Beetles but...you can trust me okay?" She touches your shoulders and looks deeper into your eyes. "You can trust me. I'll never ever lie to you Beetles."

Your emotions take over and you hug her, burying your face on your shoulder.

Someone to trust. Someone to talk to. Someone that won't be afraid of you or get hurt because of you.

A friend.

You needed a friend.

And you didn't know how badly you did until now.

C'Mell stands stiff and awkward in surprise for a moment before wrapping her arms around you.

"...I'm such a stupid bitch..." She says. "You're lonely aren't ya? Well I'll take care of you. You don't want to hang with us rebels that's cool. I'll slip you bacti-batteries when no ones looking and if you got any questions about anything just ask me. You can trust me..."

"Yeah...but can you trust me?" You whip around C'Mell in an instant and press your forearm against her throat.

"Hey...what are you doing?"

"Got to be careful about Manus right? Can never tell how dangerous one of us is you know?" You decide to play around with your previous condemnation of the danger of your race to help ease your own anxiety and any anxiety you might have given C'Mell. "We could come with secret atomic vision or headlocks!"

"You said you wanted to kick me ass right?" You tease playfully. "How you going to do that if you can't get out of this hold?"

"Heh. Just watch me bitch!" C'Mell gives a wolfish smile.

ROLL 3 1D20 TO FIGHT C'MELL IN HUMAN FORM

>>471552
You can ask C'Mell to ref up your friendly sparring to friendly Manu sparring if you want.

DO YOU WANT TO?

You're almost to the city. It's very unlikely they'll send someone at you at this point...

Could just be that there's a MASSIVE difference between gangly scientist body and "FUCKING BEETRON! YOU MONSTER! STAY AWAY FROM ME!" form.
>>
>>471743
We could pull it around in the next roll.

But yeah, our human form is strong by human standards but so is hers and Cmell knows how to fight.

In case it isn't obvious Cmell is a giant Mononoke fuck off wolf in Manu form.

Level up your relationship just a bit more and she'll let you ride her.

C'Mell twists her hips and you find yourself rolling to the ground, but you keep your arms locked around her neck and drag her down with you.

"So you want to wrestle eh?"

"Yeah!" You roll with her getting grass in your hair and leaves on your shirt until you maneuver yourself on top of her chest.

"Pretty good moves for a nerd!" C'Mell pants trying to tear your arms from her neck.

"Really? This is just instinct for me. I think I might know Judo or something."

"Never bothered to learn that! Just learned how to fight!" C'Mell gives a few game twists but fails to dislodge you. "Damn it, you're good..."

"You give up?"

"To a nerd? Dream on!"" She gasps.

"A nerd that knows judo." You correct.

"Yeah...probably learned it to fight bullies like me..." She gives one final round of floundering before going limp.

Aw...damn it! I give!" She says tapping your arm.

You release your hold and roll off of her.

You sit on the ground and pull a twig out of your hair."Whew...that was..."

"Fun right?" C'Mell says.

You nod.

"So...was that the fight I owed you?"

"No way! You took me by surprise so it doesn't count."

"...Can it be fun like this though?" You ask. "Not all grim and "I'll smash your face" but like this?"

C'Mell smiles. "Totally. Just so long as you teach me that Judo hold or whatever it is afterwards."

"I'll do what I can." You shrug. "I'm not sure I can teach something

...You feel a pressure welling up at the base of your skull...

Rook. At last.

SAY/DO?

ANSWER CALL

DELIVER A QUICK TELEPATHIC BURST THAT TELLS ROOK THAT YOU'RE BUSY AND TO CALL BACK LATER.

Aw damn it, we should have tried that.

We can try that when we spar with her later and then after an exhaustive round of sparring fall asleep against our friendly giga wolf who wraps her tail around us

Man, its going to suck if you guys end up fighting her friends...

You hold up a finger. "Uh...I think Rook's trying to talk to me...I can take this call right?" You give C'Mell your best puppy dog eyes.

"I can listen in though right? I mean what if he lies or something?"

She returns your puppy dog eyes.

I GOT TO TAKE THIS PRIVATELY. SORRY C'MELL.

Thread doesn't have that much life in it, and I'm not feeling very well today.

So perhaps we can do a little q and a feedback thing?

What do you think of the quest so far?

Which side are you leaning to join?

Any questions about the setting and characters?
>>
>>474763
Personally I really like it.
I would ask for a more in depth explanation on a couple of thing's abilities, but it's made sense to me so far.

As far as everyone else I can't really say but I'd rather not team up with Via, outside of that I don't care much.

I also feel like anything I could ask right now would be spoiler-y as all get out.
>>
>>474763
I'm enjoying this quest so far, not as comedic as some of your others.

Personally, I'd like to be allied to the rebels. Work towards the goal of removing nukes, but I'd also like to have the new planet be settled.
>>
>>475332
Don't be afraid to ask. I've dropped some heavy spoilers in the Q and A of my other quests before.
>>
>>475578
I mean I guess.
So. Giga-Wolf's abilities, how would you describe those?
And are there any Mats at all that aren't out and out bug-fuck crazy or might be able to be called reasonable?
>>
>>475612
She can bend space for a variety of effects. To move quickly from one place to another, to make attacks miss her , to turn opponents into spaghetti, etc. She literally grabs space in her jaw and claws and pulls it like a rug. Her finisher is a space-distorting scream that scrambles the opponent but exhausts her energy completely.

The higher up ones are far more cool headed. Mass and Jommy in particular. But they're dedicated to their sides. Some characters will have heavy neutral leanings. Tarkus in particular feels extreme guilt over being the first Manu to kill another Manu and being involved in the incident that birthed the rebel faction. Kathleen, Jommy's lieutenant, is a moderate that curbs his enthusiasm. A Manu on the Viasvata side named Battle is a tough Japanese delinquent who just wants to ride his motorcycle and take care of his girlfriend (Tarkus) and hates being drafted into a war.
>>
>>475709
Manu are just Mats with physical forms?

Personally I'd rather go for neutral or try to work on cooperation between the anti-nuke rebels and remnants.
We have a shared adversary in the form of what used to be our co-workers.
>>
>>475808
Sort of depending on what you mean. Manus are humans transformed by Mats science but the forms they take on as Manus are based on the forms the Mats had back on Avalon. The Mats were less a "race" and more a collection of races so you get giant wolves and bipedal bugs and things like Bloodion.
>>
>>475938
That gives me a rather disturbing idea of what the plan might have been from their side.
>>
>>475960
It should
>>
>>474763
I want to go neutral and STOP EVERYONE.

what level of science is the human world at, how much of Mats science has been weaponized by those with access to it?
>>
>>476639
It's a blend of real-world eighties and sci-fi. Cancer is now 90 percent curable thanks to old Vaivasvata leaking Mats genetic technology. Earth is going through a population boom because move people are living longer and surviving things that would've killed them. Africa is more of a political force because disease and hunger have been taken care of. This means the Afgan wars is a larger thing in this world with the US and USSR fighting over not only the mid east but all of Africa. There's no internet, but the concept is discussed among Manu as an electronic version of the Besant connection they all have. They call it the Matrix (after Neuromancer) or the Noosphere (after DeChardin).

People still listen to cassettes and cell phones aren't a thing. Claremont's X-men are the hottest selling comic and you can buy an Atari 2600. Return of the Jedi broke box office numbers.

In terms of weaponization both sides of the cold war are very afraid of creating any kind of super bio weapon. Nukes are enough of a danger and do their job of being big and scary good enough. But they have created radiation-eating microbes based on the bacti-batteries you helped create. This has had the effect of making both sides feel MORE comfortable about nuclear weapons, not less.

That's another point for Yuki.

On the bright side your work with Gene Mark helped bring back the long extinct Japanese wolf, which means you're going to have a memory roll when C'Mell transforms.

Both sides have rudimentary understanding of the Besant and how it works and use it primarily to create orbiting satellite networks staffed by biological computer brains. Telepathy can catch a lot more data than a camera. The rebels have managed to convert a Russian brain to their side-Laikha. In this world she's not a dog. She's a modified dog's brain.
>>
>>477858
You know, I didn't realize until now that wolves and dogs are becoming a theme in this quest. I might do something about "lone wolves" and "loyal dogs" in terms of theme now.
>>
>>477872
Well we seem to be going that way for Yuki a bit at any rate.

So I sort of thought it already was.
On the other hand, any idea on how you'd want to implement that?
>>
>>477872
has this bin archived yet?
>>
>>478244
In one sense loyalty is a major theme of the game. Only Jommy and Mass are really loyal to the cause behind both sides. Their teammates have other loyalties that could come between them and their chosen sides. Battle is loyal to Tarkus for instance. If she ever defects he's coming with her. Cordwainer is loyal to his dog. C'Mell talks tough but she follows her friends.

If we stand outside these webs of loyalties we become a wolf, alone-but alive and free. We won't be the only one outside the "system". There's the psychic potential in Tokyo who knows even less about what's going on then we do, a Rouge Matsya named Alastor after the Shelley poem, not the DMC sword, who just wants to protect the potential and keep him/her out of danger , and Bloodion will be a very dark take on the lone wolf concept who only wants to DEVOUR you so he can feel whole and normal again. Yes. He's even MORE fucked in the head then he was now.

Not yet. I usually wait for a thread to hit the qst archive before archiving it on sup tg.
