You are Prince Meirion auk Gwyrren, the only sane man in a royal family with dubious concepts of strategy, justice, taxation, and governance in general. You have made it your goal in life to keep your family on the throne and your head firmly attached to your body.

===============

You chose a somewhat darker, more formal shade of red for your uniform. After all, it's the Crown Prince's big day and you want to look a little bit older and more imposing to support him.

It's not entirely clear when the ceremony itself starts. The banquet started with breakfast and you expect it to run throughout the day; the menu will change throughout, and it's considered a bit of an accomplishment to sample everything. You doubt you'll have time for that though.

"You look great, your highness." Myrddin pats your back and squeezes your shoulder with a firm grip. "I hope I don't have to remind you how important to day is."

"Of course not, Myrddin," you say. "My brother's marriage will set the foundation for Gwyrddarfordir's future."

"Actually, I was referring to your marriage," Myrddin says. "I've reserved a room so you can discuss things without our royal guests this evening. You can make a decision afterwards."

"Isn't it a little early for that?" You ask. "I thought we'd agreed to wait until after the Crown Prince's wedding."

"The official announcement will have to wait a few more days, at least," Myrddin says. "Probably until you choose which principality you want to take over. So, are you ready?"

>"Of course I am."
>"I already have a consort. I can handle marriage."
>"Not in the slightest."

"Not in the slightest."

"I'm sure you'll manage anyway." Myrddin grins. "Because you have no choice on the matter."

You turn and glare at him. "You know, I remember making you my advisor," you say. "I'm the one giving the orders."

"Oh, please," Myrddin scoffs. "We both know your mother's the one in charge here."

…

Yeah, you can't argue against that logic.

You straighten your uniform out, ruffle your hair to give me a bit of a fashionably wild look, put on just a little bit of perfume and check yourself out in the mirror. It's all delightfully vain.

The only thing missing is a date, and asking Olwen would be a missed opportunity. You're certain Myrddin can arrange for one of your other acquaintances to spend a day at the palace. The princesses aren't an option yet, but that's not a problem.

Inviting a commoner to this kind of celebration tends to get tongues waggling, but you don't care. If anything, you'll come up with a way to take advantage of it.

Eleri Lloyd is your usual dance partner. You have reason to believe she's interested in you, but that she'd be a little nervous about becoming your concubine. This might put her at ease.

Delyth, the temple chaplain, would be likely to fit in, and the nobles would definitely respect her position.

Esyllt Coleran has turned out to be one of your closest business partners, and you're certain she'd appreciate another invitation from you.

As for Isla Owens and Nia Fisher, you haven't spent all that much time with them, and you suspect you won't get many more opportunities.

Posting the world map for discussion of principalities. I suggest we choose Degfford since it puts us right between the capital and our Uncle's city, allowing for quick interventions, plus puts us close to the borders of Olstren and Svekka, which will be good if we choose Agda or Reagan as our wives.

Is there any chance we could get one of those maps updated to show where in general the land holdings are for any consorts or concubines whose families have significant land? It strikes me that with the potential for civil war down the road with uncle, geography might be a wise contemplation. Like I know Seren is right up against Olstren.
>>
>>446730
You can expect a more detailed information of the geography before making any permanent decisions, starting later in this thread.

I don't quite remember - is that a body of water between five and six that separates our nation?

If we go with Agda or Reagan, I would strongly agree on Degfford, all else being equal, from a strictly geographic perspective. If Aleksandra we should stick on that side so we aren't separated in a civil war from our main potential for reinforcements and can get politically involved there. The main considerations I have so far is Seren could help us box in uncle and Olwen's family seems like a strong one. I don't remember Rhonwen is at all if it was said.

As I recollect, sister would be most easily paired with someone in Rosea for a spouse. We might consider that too and whether we consolidate in one place with her in cities 6 and 3 versus we taking the west and her the east.

"Myrddin, I believe I'll need a proper dance partner for today."

"Again?" Myrddin raises an eyebrow. "Your highness, I think you've gotten a little too excited about that."

"Everyone needs a hobby," you say. "I trust you can send the invitation?"

"Of course, your highness," Myrddin says. "I'll let you know as soon as she arrives."

You follow Myrddin out of your room and go on your separate paths. The servants are under orders to use the more discreet hallways today, so you don't encounter many people as you go. Tables and chairs have been placed all around the palace for those who want something a little more private. It's a terrible headache security-wise, but you and Myrddin have it well in hand, and if people want to make deals inside the royal palace, you don't feel the slightest bit of guilt about spying on them. It is, after all, your home.

There's also small plates of food all around. You grab some fruit so you can eat as you decide where to go next.

>Visit your brother. This is your last chance to speak with him before he's married.

Yes, 5 and 6 are separated by a body of water. If we do go with Aleksandra (I don't recommend it, I say have Nesta marry into Rosea) I would recommend claiming Ailgiat (no. 6), since we'd be close to Rosea, plus it probably has mad trade dosh due to it's location at the mouth of an inland sea.
>>
>>446769
>Visit your brother. This is your last chance to speak with him before he's married.

Give him a nice brotherly pep talk, I have feeling he might have butterflies in his stomach.
>>
>>446782
I tend to agree. One thing I am wondering with regards to the other two princesses is what is likely to happen to the one we don't choose and potential for good relations. Whoever we cover with Nesta, we are going to have one left out. Reagan kind of seems like she is in the most tenuous position.
>>
>>446794
Reagan would probably be totally screwed if we don't marry her, in all honesty. Not unless there also happens to be some competent foreign prince she could attach herself to. It's not like she can marry an Olstrenian noble and end up in an even half decent political postiotn.
>>
>>446801
>Reagan would probably be totally screwed if we don't marry her, in all honesty.
Not our problem
>>
>>446814
It isn't, no. Not unless we make it our problem. That's how politics work.
>>
>>446814
It is our problem. We have a high potential for a destabilized nation right up against our uncle's territory. I don't think he's been trying to dispose of her just to irritate us. The problem is Svekka also has potential for destabilization down the road.

You leave your plate of fruit on a table for the servants to find and go looking for your brother.

Prince Haul isn't in his room, or in one of the training grounds, but you eventually find him in a waiting room not far from the throne room. He stands there, already fitted in his formal clothes, and stares out the window. You could make a portrait out of it.

"Welcome, brother," Prince Haul says. "Come to see me before the ceremony?"

"It's the last time I see you as a bachelor," you say. "I didn't want to miss it. How do you feel?"

"I'm not certain," Prince Haul says. "This is all very…" He waves his arm across the room. "Disconcerting, I suppose. I'm happy to finally be joined with Mair, but it seems so wasteful. All these useless nobles crawling around the palace while the people are walled out. If this is supposed to be a celebration for the kingdom, I don't see it."

>"The people are celebrating in their own way."

'Tis a gilded cage

>>446822
If we break down our 3 choices in wives:

>Aleksandra
Great stability, great military support. A good route if we don't want to get wrapped up in foreign affairs. Only problem is that our political opportunities are quite limited, we'd basically have to try to make our own internal opportunities.

>Agda
Less stable than Rosea, but not an immediate powder keg like Olstren. Svekka is, potentially, on the cusp of some sort of industrial revolution. However, its political situation may prove to be the most difficult of all three choices. Tensions between the Merchants and the Nobles are mounting, and it will take 4d chess style maneuvering to solve the crises without any bloodshed. Regardless, it may all prove worth it if they do truly have an industrial revoluton

>Reagan
Most immediately unstable of all the three options, politically speaking. The nobles are all plotting towards their own ends and the country can and probably will break out into open conflict any time now. However, as Reagan is the heir to Olstren's throne, marrying her could have the most tangible political gain for us, that be the forming of a union between Olstren and Gwyrddarfordir. Also, while the situation is of the most immediately dire of all three choices, dealing with plotting nobles will probably prove easier than dealing with merchants, in no small part to our heavy focus on sovereign and intrigue.

I personally vote Reagan on the grounds of the potential political gain for us, plus that our character is very much built around playing the intrigue and diplomacy game.
>>
>>446826
Uncle will have to go, no doubt about that. But we simply aren't powerful enough to do that yet. We probably won't be able to openly challenge him until the mid-to-late part of the next act.

I agree that Reagan is probably the best choice of the three. A strong claim to the throne plus we're well tailored for intriguing civil war, so is our wife which can mean over-specialization but also near total domination against any plotting going on in the Kingdom.

And now that we know Svekka is likely to blow up in the near future it would even give us an avenue to expand if we so chose. At the very least with foresight we could make huge inroads in controlling portions of their rapidly growing economy if we don't want pure land.

Personally I like Agda the most, but this is what concubines are for.

"Consider this part of our duties," you say. "We must placate the nobility in order to maintain peace in the kingdom."

"We can maintain the peace just as well by appointing men of good character to certain posts," Prince Haul says, "rather than relying on people who simply happened to be born from the right people."

Technically correct, but it would make inheritance and legacies far more complicated than they really need to be. You really hope your mother will stay in the capital for a few years to look after your brother.

"It's the same thing as an army," you say. "You only have so many officers to choose from. Make do with what's available."

The Crown Prince sighs and rubs his forehead. "I suppose since there's nothing I can do about it, I'll simply endure and try to set an example for others," he says. "Thank you, Meirion. I suppose we won't have time to speak again until tomorrow."

"It might be longer," you say. "I imagine you'll be busy."

No doubt your mother will want grandchildren, and you're not sure when you'll be able to deliver. Besides, it's more proper for the Crown Prince to have an heir first.

Having nothing else to do, you decide to stay in the courtyard and wait for Eleri.

She arrives after quite a while; it must have taken some time for her to get into a dress. You take her hand to help her spent down from her carriage.

"Thank you for accepting my invitation, Eleri," you say. "I'm afraid I'll need a partner later this evening."

"I am honoured by your invitation, your highness," she says. "I promise I won't disappoint you."

>"We find a place to rest for a bit."
>"Let's go join the banquet."
>"Would you like to see the palace grounds?"

"Would you like to see the palace grounds?"

"Certainly, your highness."

Eleri takes your arm and you bring her to the gardens, taking a few detours to avoid visitors. It'd be awfully inconvenient if they eavesdropped on you, after all. As you tour the palace, you talk about how Eleri has been doing.

"I trust you haven't had any other problems?"

"Prob- Oh, no, your highness," she answers. "In fact, we're doing well enough that father has been able to turn down less interesting work. It's given me time to study foreign art a little. It's quite interesting. Rosean opera is very ostentatious, while Svekka is much more direct. Olstren doesn't really have its own style of opera, but their theatre has some very interesting history with masks…"

It seems Eleri has been inspired after your last meeting; she goes into a detailed presentation of every major performance art tradition on the continent and beyond, when necessary.

You bring her to a shaded bench and pour Eleri a glass of chilled lemon water; her throat has to be parched with how much she's been talking.

"Thank you, your highness." She drinks her glass and sets it aside. "If you don't mind, I was hoping to ask you a question."

"Go ahead," you say. "I'll answer if I can."

Eleri hesitates for a moment. "I was wondering what you were going to do once the Crown Prince is married."

"More of what I've been doing so far, most likely," you say. "Leading armies, putting out fires, protecting the kingdom, keeping the nobles in line. That sort of thing."

"I might be able to help you with that," Eleri says. "I hear quite a bit of gossip in my line of work."

"Anything particularly interesting?"

Eleri moves closer to you and leans on your shoulder so she can speak without being overheard.

"Apparently, someone is trying to undermine your uncle, Prince Aled," she says. "There are rumours that some of his supporters had their homes destroyed, while others were even killed."

Welp! Time to change the subject!

"I'll be careful," you say. "I won't be able to make it a priority, I'm afraid. Now that my brother's getting married, it's something I'll have to think about."

"Oh." Eleri's face flushes bright red and she looks away.

As awkward as it is, it's not nearly as bad as trying to explain why you're assassinating your uncle's subordinates or running them out of the capital.

"Come, we should go."

You take Eleri's hands and lead her into the palace before the situation can get even more… complicated.

There's still a bit of time left before the wedding starts, but you've arrived just in time to get a decent seat. There aren't many to spare, but it looks like your mother reserved a spot at the family table, or you could sit with Olwen or Myrddin.

You decide to bring Eleri to the family table with your mother and sister. Your father is sitting on his throne, waiting for your brother and his new wife to arrive.

"Meirion, I see you brought Eleri with you," your mother says cheerfully. "Sit down, quickly. Eleri, I was hoping we could talk again."

Eleri blinks in confusion. "You did… your majesty?"

"Oh, yes," Queen Margrete says. "I have to get to know my son's friends better, after all."

Or perhaps she just wants the ladylike daughter she never had. Not that you'd let something like that influence your decision.

You sit next to Nesta and stick a slice of beef in a pot of boiling broth.

"I must admit, this is more exciting than I thought it would be," Nesta says. "To see our older brother becoming an adult is a little… intimidating."

"I never thought I'd hear you admit to that, sister." You chuckle. "Then again, I think I see what you mean. I can defeat armies, but time… time is something very different."

Nesta nods in agreement. Before she can speak again, the doors swing open and the room turns silent.

Crown Prince Haul and the Maid Mair enter the throne room and walk up to the throne, maintaining some distance from each other. They stop when they reach the first step. King Gerad draws his sword and descends the steps. He holds the sword point-down and waits.

The couple cut their hands each on a different side of the blade. The blood drips along the edge of the sword, mixing at the dip. A single drop falls to the ground and -

"The marriage is done!" King Gerad shouts. "Hahahaha! Let the festivities continue!"

The talking and revelry renews, louder than before. The King sits at a table set at the front of the room, with Mair and Haul at his right.

"That… that was it?" Eleri asks. "It doesn't seem very official."

"The legacy of Gwyrren is passed on by blood and sword," Nesta says. "This is all we need."

"The wedding is really just an excuse to celebrate," you say. "Speaking of which, it's time to dance, I believe. Join me?"

Eleri gladly follows you to the dance floor.

Your movements are elegant, precise, but not ostentatious. You make a good showing of yourself, but it's only enough to catch the eye of people who are already passably familiar with dancing.

As the song winds down, you smoothly exit the dance floor and return to your table, where only your mother is waiting.

"That was wonderful, you two," she says. "Eleri, your movements are excellent; I'd like to know more about your career. Come sit with me a bit. Meirion needs to visit some other guests anyway."

Eleri looks at you. You just smile and pull a chair for her.

"You two might as well talk for a bit," you say. "I'll come by again before you leave."

"Oh, go do what you must, Meirion," your mother says. "I'll find some chambers for Eleri if it gets too late. Now, go, go!"

The Queen shoos you away and starts chatting with Eleri. You're ambushed by Myrddin not two seconds later.

"It's time?" You ask.

"It's time," Myrddin says.

This entire situation is much too jarring. You only just barely have time to finish one conversation before you're forced into another.

The Princesses and the Archduchess are assembled on a balcony not far from the throne room, picking at a luxurious selection of vegetables and cured meats.

"Good evening, ladies," you say. "I trust you're enjoying yourselves."

"Yes, it's very nice," Laila speaks up first. "I thought the wedding would be tiring, but it was very simple. I liked it very much."

"There is something to be said about keeping things straightforward," Aleksandra says. "It makes everything so much easier."

You have a good idea of what your royal guests are like, but there are still some things you need to confirm before committing to anything. The first is to get their opinion of their respective kingdoms' trade. It wouldn't do to get yourself dragged into a failing enterprise, after all.

You decide to throw in some bait and see if they catch on.

"You know how difficult it is to finance these things," you say. "After all, we're all in the same position, aren't we?"

"Some of us are in better positions than others," Aleksandra says. "Even though the Rosean climate varies between extremes, I have quite a bit of farmland at my disposal. It's more than enough for a regular income."

Reagan smirks and slides a finger along the edge of a wineglass. "Olstren has enough food to satisfy our needs," she says, "along with mines in the east and north, and ports along the western coast. It's true that it still needs to be developed

"Fortunately, Svekka has mines along both its borders," Agda says. "The mountains make for excellent defenses, and there are enough passes and valleys open for trade. Once our industrialization project is complete, our production will be more than enough to outperform farmers.

Laila's head is swivelling between the three other women, trying to figure out what, exactly, they're talking about.

It's quite informative for you, however.

There's just one more thing you'd like to find out. The Crown Prince's marriage will ensure the continuation of your Gwyrren's line, but that's still a question when it comes to you. You'd like to know which of the ladies would let you keep your name.

"Money's money," you say. "So long as we make enough to stay alive and put a little aside, that's all it takes to keep a kingdom going."

"I wouldn't say I'm satisfied with that kind of mere survival," Agda says. "I'd rather invest in the future."

There's your segue.

"A kingdom's future is a great burden," you say. "Now that the Crown Prince is married, I hope I can continue the family line as well."

"I don't worry about such things too much, to be honest," Reagan says. "So long as Olstren is governed by a suitable ruler, that's all that matters. It's not like the commoners would notice the difference anyway.

Agda gives Reagan a cold stare. "My family has been improving Svekka for generations," she says. "I have no intention of ceding that legacy to anyone."

"See, that's one thing I like about my position." Aleksandra grins at the two women's argument. "I don't care. My brother will become Tsar, and I only need to support him. It's a much lighter burden to bear."

That answers the last of your questions. The conversation remains chilly for a bit, but it's nothing a glass of wine can't fix in short order. You linger a while before returning to the throne room. Your mother has absconded with Eleri, but you have no reason to worry about them at the moment.

You have much bigger worries on your mind.

Olwen's talking with some ladies from minor noble houses. You beckon to her, and she excuses herself to see what you want.

"I need your help with something," you say. "Actually, I just need some company while I think about something."

Olwen raises an eyebrow. "I guess I can do that," she says. "What are you thinking about?"

"Marital affairs."

With a soft 'ah,' Olwen falls into step behind you as you start pacing around the hallways that are farthest from the guests.

Reagan mac Connaught is the current Princess and future Queen of the Kingdom of Olstren. Olstren is a coastal kingdom, which would facilitate trade with Gwyrddarfordir and your mother's homeland of Vitland if you know how to take advantage of it. Much of its eastern frontier with Svekka is blocked by mountains which slope into rocky hills all the way to the western coast. There are enough flat plains and lakes, especially in the southern regions, to maintain farmland, and tougher crops like potatoes can grow in the colder northern regions. Northern Olstren is known for its fur trade and its mines, although the weather makes mining difficult outside the summer season.

Reagan's political position is weak. Olstren's nobles are trying to use her to claim the kingdom's throne for their own houses, and Reagan seeks a political alliance Gwyrddarfordir in order to both save herself and to ensure that her father's throne passes on to someone competent enough to lead and govern her kingdom: you. She has also made it clear that she is open to marrying into House Gwyrren, which opens up new possibilities for you.

It would not be an easy marriage, however. The nobility of Olstren would not tolerate your rule, and war would be inevitable. However, eliminating some of Olstren's noble houses would allow you to elevate your own allies, including your consorts and concubines.

Princess Agda Almstedt and her sister Laila are the children of Svekka's king, and Agda has made it clear that she will not be separated from her younger sister. Svekka is flanked to the east and west by mountains, although valleys and passes still allowed it to wage war against Olstren and Rosea in the past, mostly over mining rights. Its weather is harsher than Olstren's and it has less arable land, so hunting for meat and fur is a common activity. Svekkan mines are also richer than Olstren's, although exploitation is equally difficult.

In recent years, Svekka has been investing in its productivity. Although its knowledge of enchantments isn't as impressive as Gwyrddarfordir's, its capacity for mass production and industry is significant and could prove a important boon if it is allowed to develop at its current pace. However, Svekka's industrialization has led to conflicts between the increasingly powerful merchants and the declining landed aristocracy. The merchants resent the fact that their control over production is uncertain, while the aristocracy wishes to maintain its power. The royal family is stuck between the two.

War can still be averted, and this would be the ideal outcome for all parties involved. Agda believes that you can help facilitate negotiations, but the House of Almstedt remains in a position of power; you would be expected to marry into it. Still, a prosperous Svekka would be extremely profitable for Gwyrddarfordir as well.

Archduchess Aleksandra Volkova is the daughter of the Tsar of Rosea. Rosea is larger than Olstren and Svekka combined and, aside from the mountainous region that separates it from Svekka, is mostly covered in steppes. Herding and agriculture are widespread, although the weather tends to vary between extremes. The unification of Rosea has led to a militaristic culture comparable to Gwyrddarfordir's.

None of that matters to you, however. Aleksandra will not inherit her father's throne and, like you, she would much prefer to support her older brother's claim. However, her lands in Rosea would provide you with additional resources in case of an emergency and her armies would help you secure the kingdom as the Crown changes hands from your father to your brother over the next few years. You would have to travel to Rosea to pay your respects, but as the Victorious Prince, none would dare to take you lightly.

A political marriage between Gwyrddarfordir and Rosea would also allow you to smooth out the tension between the two kingdoms and erase some old grudges.

Okay. It's time to take over Olstren. Maybe annex it. You'll figure out what you want to do with it once the competition has been dealt with.

You return to the balcony, but Reagan's not there. Having no other leads, you decide to check her guest room.

"Should I be considered about the fact that you're planning to marry a woman famous for her string of dead suitors?"

"Only the ones she didn't like," you tell Olwen. "I'll be fine."

"Well, you certainly have a high opinion of yourself."

You knock on Reagan's door. It might be improper to visit a woman at night, but Olwen's with you, so people who don't know any better might think you're here on innocent business.

"Prince Meirion?" Reagan frowns. "Do you need something."

"Let's get married."

"Yes!" Reagan practically throws herself at you and shoves her tongue down your throat. "Although I was actually hoping you'd just push me down and take me by force."

"It seemed polite to ask first," you say. "May we come in?"

"Oh, yes, please do." Reagan steps aside and closes the door behind you and Olwen.

"I can leave you two alone of you prefer, your highness," Olwen says. "I wouldn't want to interrupt."

"I would prefer if you stayed, Lady Olwen," Reagan says. "Letting you watch sounds a little exciting… but we don't have time for that right now."

You ignore that comment and pour some water for everyone. Reagan sits at a coffee table and steeple her fingers.

"Since you've agreed to help me, your highness," Reagan says, "we'll need to prepare adequately. I absolutely cannot return to Olstren without an army at my back, so I'm afraid we'll need to elope as soon as possible."

This is going to be a long night.
