You’re Max, and you find yourself in the longest bad trip of your life. Real life has been transformed to a game with the only change being you hallucinating out of your mind.

You expected maybe exploring beautiful fantasy landscapes, perhaps gunning down cyborg dogs with fireballs, not spending your days after school in an unused storage room in the Paranormal Club. But hey, who knows? You seem to be pretty lucky.

A week has passed since the club was formed, a very uneventful one undoubtedly. In your free time, you ended up just…

STR: 3 > 4
>+1 to all strength and endurance rolls.

But that’s not what you’re doing right now, as you’re sitting in the clubroom bored.

Ethan slams the table, “We… we need to do something.”

“Huh?” Anastasia asks, opening a bag of chips.

“Dude, it’s been a week and we haven’t done anything!”

“But we meet twice a week, and we only just started.” Melanie replies, taking a chip and pulverizing it with her dragon teeth.

“At this rate, this is going to be the worst club in existence,” he says while taking out a bottle of sweet cider. “We need a project!”

You groan. Ethan doesn’t bring something up without an idea of his own.

Anastasia responds, “Hey, let’s make a movie! A documentary maybe.”

“Oh, Theater Day is coming up.” Melanie suggests, “What about a play?”

Ethan cuts in, “What are you guys saying? C’mon, I’m talking about real paranormal investigative work here! There are haunted alleyways and abandoned houses that need exploring!”

“Ethan, I can fight off ghosts, not crackheads,” you point out.

Melanie hums, “I still like my idea.”

Turning to you, Ethan asks, “Max, what do you think?”

Local legends and myths

Writing.

“What about checking out local legends and myths?”

“Yeah, that’s what I’m talking about!” Ethan says.

“Huh, what is there?” Anastasia asks. “… Bloody Mary?”

Melanie offers, “There is the story of a werewolf that hides in the mountains nearby. Or the water witch in the lake.”

“Those sound… dangerous,” you say.

“There is also the talking, walking tree that watches the town, the ghost train that runs through tracks in the middle of nowhere…” she continues.

“You sure know a lot,” Anastasia points out.

“I just think they’re interesting, so I looked some up.”

“I thought you weren’t interested in fantasy,” you question.

“Of course not. This isn’t fantasy, this is completely realistic!” she counters.

“Well, I don’t care what you guys pick. I’m good with any,” Ethan says, then adding, “Maaaybe the werewolf could be cool. Or the witch.”

Dang, to late for ghost train...
Cool quest op!
>>
“What water witch?” you ask.

“A long time ago, there used to be a small village that was near the White Lake. By word of mouth, they had learned of witches hiding amongst humans,” she explains, “You might have heard that one of their tests were to thrown in water. It turns out that one of them were a witch, and that witches do drown. In her undying fury, with the souls of all the other girls, the water witch was born, levelling the entire town. It is said when a young girl starts to drown in the White Lake, she appears to save her. This one is one of my favorites!”

“That… sounds pretty cool,” Anastasia says.

“How do you know so much?” you ask.

Melanie blushes, somehow growing redder through her scales. “I like reading about these things.”

“Sweet, it looks like we’re in agreement! Water witch it is!” Ethan proclaims.

You haven’t said anything, but it appears that everyone else is in agreement.

“Alright, since tomorrow is a holiday let’s go check it out,” he continues, “We’ll meet at the boats.”

Everyone groans.

“Don’t complain, we were slacking off for a week!”

You admit that everyone’s excited, secretly or not. When you get home, you think about preparing. Ethan would probably get supplies, but it won’t hurt for you to bring something along too.

Ethan’s got it covered, right?

As it turns out, he only brought rope and sweet cider. Great.

“So what’s the plan?” you ask.

“We rent a boat and fake a drowning. Simple,” he answers. “First part’s done.”

“That… doesn’t sound safe.”

“That’s what the rope is for, man,” he lifts it up.

“Then who’s…”

“Not me, I’m recording this,” Anastasia says, holding up a handheld camera.

“I can’t swim,” Melanie adds.

You don’t like where this is going. “Anastasia, why don’t you give the camera to Melanie?”

“I’m afraid not, Max. She’ll need a thousand more years of experience before she can record at my level.”

“You are absolutely not recording me in a magical girl outfit!” you say as Ethan drags you onto a boat.

“Relax, I’ll blur out your face in post-production.”

That doesn’t make you feel better at all.

“If this doesn’t work, you’re the one getting on!” you shout as Ethan pushes you two off.

Oh my god, no.

Ethan says, “You’re the one most likely to see it, so this would be a win-win if you get her.”

You transform quickly, showering everything in a disgusting display of sparkles. Tying the rope around your waist, you dip your heels into the cold water. To your surprise Ethan gives you a little push; into the water you go.

Covering your face, you check out a new prompt. Ethan yelps in the background as you hear violent splashing, and then you see him sent flying into the water toward the beach.

“The fuck is going on?” he yells. “Max?”

He’s probably fine. You check out the classes offered, many locked out because of your incredibly awful attributes.

Classes

<Soothsayer>
Luck and Intelligence oriented, this class specializes in information collection and divination.

<Dicemancer>
Fate is decided by the roll of a die, from the most egregious error to the most fantastical miracle.

<Gambiteer>
The greatest advantage, as temporary as it may be, can’t be achieved without risk after all.

Pick one:

>Soothsayer
>Dicemancer
>Gambiteer

And then pick one of these:

>Prepare to fight it.
>Try to talk the water witch down.
>Swim away.

Luck plus ing is nice but info collection and divination? Blegh.

Dicemancer or gambiteer, whichever or.

Also talk to the water witch, calm it down and apologize, make it a friend.
>>
>>443973
>Soothsayer
We literally fight by throwing dice at things to produce random effects. Dicemancer doesn't add anything.
Likewise, "taking risks" is something we can just decide to do anyway.
Soothsayer actually gives us new options, and makes it easier to advance the story.
>>
>>443978
Actually op, this anon >>444042 makes some good points.

Is that literally all of the info your gonna give us? Or do we have to wait longer to get the details?

If so I say we ignore the menu and talk with the witch before we try any stupid shit.
>>
>>444046
(All 3 can operate outside of combat. Dicemancer allows for events that should not be possible to happen. Gambiteer gives new options and bonuses when dealing with problems.)

But the whole premise of this quest is that crazy, impossible events are happening. How would we even notice the difference?

And if you're accepting write-ins, then people will submit crazy stunts anyway.
If you want Gambiteer to provide options that are more fun, then that would imply you're not trying to make the quest fun already (or even that you'd sabotage your own writing if we didn't pick it), which would be just insane.
If that's wrong and you want making choices to be fun either way, then why have a "make choices fun" ability in the first place?

Selecting Gambiteer, you watch as the prompt closes and a skill tree opens up for you to select. You doubt you have any time to carefully read and select anything, so you put it away for now.

Quest!
Slay the Water Witch.
Rewards: 200 EXP, 200 Credits

Going between the water witch and Ethan, you yell out for her to stop.

“Stop it, he didn’t mean it!”

In a bubbling rumble, a chorus of voices speak in return, “You, you can see me? And you are a boy too!”

With an explosion of water, you’re launched back onto the beach, the feeling of sand grating your behind.

Anastasia with her camera lowered asks, “Max, are you okay? What’s going on?”

“We can talk later; I need to deal with this first.”

She slightly nods as she takes a few steps back. With Melanie helping Ethan out of the water, you stare down the whirling apparition of water in front of you.

“Stay back, Keeper. I will never return,” the witch echoes.

You catch on faster than usual.

>[Gambiteer]Bluff and demand her to stay down, then get information.
>Try to clear up what’s going on.

>No reason to stay, get out.

As you talk, you feel some strange power radiating within. The power to pass off absolute horseshit as the truth. You transform back, your embarrassment failing to seep through.

“You’re the one who should stand down,” you say, unknown confidence and power behind your words, “Explain yourself. What are you doing?”

“Saving lives,” she responds, melting lower just a bit. “What if I tamper with this world? I do no wrong.”

Keeping it vague, you reply, “You know well what’s wrong. Did you not expect me to arrive?”

“I expected one to arrive sooner in truth, and not in a manner that is to bait me out,” she says while she winds back. “What are you waiting for, Keeper?”

You thought about making small talk, but you realize you don’t have that comfort. Just like how you can feel her presence, no doubt she can feel that you’re weaker than her.

“Because, witch; I may be reconsidering. Tell me, why here? What are you trying to do?” you interrogate.

“Here, because this is the only place where I can influence this world,” she says, her voice on edge. “I right wrongs because I can, because I am able, unlike you.”

She approaches you, and it takes everything you’ve got to not break into a sprint.

“If it’s as you say, and it does appear to be true, then I’ll pardon you,” you respond, “Do not betray your words, and I will leave you alone.”

Your act slipped slightly, just for a moment.

Someone pulls you away just as a pillar of water slams down where you just were.

“What are you doing? Run!” Melanie says.

You haul it with no intention of staying and fighting. Maybe you can come back sometime when she’s cooled down, but right now you doubt you’ll accomplish much. To your surprise, you find that she isn’t chasing any of you, instead opting to watch you all run away.

“Are you mental?” Ethan asks, “Why the hell were you trying to talk with that thing?”

“She seemed nice,” you huffed. “Thought we could get along.” Looking at Anastasia, you see her fiddling with her camera and ask, “How’s the footage?”

“Well, I got Ethan flying out of the water in HD,” she answers.

“Better than nothing.”

When you do stop running, you immediately drop down in relief. Opening up your abilities menu, you check out what’s new.

You save your points, hoping for something better later. When you close the window, you find that you have another slot in your inventory. Filling it is a basket-hilted saber with a 20-sided die at the end. You try retrieving it, but a voice interrupts you.

“I got a text from Jay,” Ethan says out of the blue, “He’s in the clubroom.”

There were no classes but the school was still open. Still…

“Why he is there?” you ask.

“I asked if he wanted to join us,” he replies. “Guess he missed us meeting here and decided to check out the clubroom. You guys should look at this.”

“What’s going on?” Anastasia asks.

He shows a picture of the clubroom, twisting chairs and desks jovially chomping around.

“I heard there were always ghosts in the clubroom, but why do they show up when we’re not there?” he complains.

Melanie says, “We should go.”

You open up your inventory to try and reach for the sword. Trying to clutch thin air, your hand goes through the interface to hold onto nothing.

Suddenly, a locker bursts open from behind, reaching out and latching onto Melanie. She shrieks, a torrent of fire escaping from her mouth and liquefying the door.

“…Huh? What happened?” she asks bewildered.

Then a classroom door flies open, a desk launching at you. It slams into and pushes you against a wall. Holding its mouth open with your left arm and leg, you have the idea to try and envision the sword in your hand.

Slowly, you feel something materialize in your fist. Slamming it down onto desk, the soap from your shower flies out and slides on the floor. Wrong item. The desk stumbles back; taking advantage, you try again, this time materializing the sword.

[8]

The sabre grows immediately lighter, a warping torrent of wind flowing from the blade. You bring it down, cutting straight through the desk mimic, but not enough to stop it. When it jumps at you again, you slice once more, fully cleaving it into two.

Behind you are Melanie and Anastasia trying to pull Ethan out of a locker. More desks and lockers start moving in front of you.

Oh shit hold up, grab the soap back up and slide on it, shifting around the room and stabbing at baddies.

This should use the gambiteer skill right?

Also can we have separation of votes and dice rolls? It's kinda confusing. And I imagine with modifiers and shit it'll probably get worse.

(The dice rolls are independent of the votes. Otherwise, I'd have you roll after you voted.)

Jumping on the soap like an absolute madman, you kick off mid-transformation. The frills flutter in the wind, which you promptly shred with your sword to reveal your jeans underneath.

Dashing from side to side, you duck as morphing steel and wood lash out at you, desperately trying to grab you as you sweep by mimics. With flurry of slashes, you tear up the hall and everything in front, wildly switching between angles. Splinters leap as the powerful wind smashes through; sparks fly as you cut through the locker doors. When a mimic leaps through the tiles on the floor, you skid to a stop, twisting your body to swing all the way through and cleanly separating it into two.

The desks and chairs pour out of the room with you rolling your die in retaliation.

In a bright flash, the monsters flicker in and out of existence, disintegrating pixel by pixel, particle by particle. Those who aren’t caught in the explosion are blinding, leaving an opening which you take advantage of in no time. Your saber sweeps past, taking care of the rest.

Suddenly, you feel tired, as if a great power has been drained from you.

“Whoa, nice moves,” Ethan says, climbing out.

“It looks like you don’t really need us,” Anastasia nervously jokes.

Jay’s on the third floor, presumably. Right next to the Dimensional Crack. The stairs are to your right, while an elevator waits on your left.

“Come on, let’s take the stairs,” you say.

You walk into the stairwell as the others follow behind. Suddenly as you’re climbing up, the railing swings out. It collides into you before you react and knocks you backwards. Anastasia and Ethan jumps on the railing, grabbing hold of it before ultimately ripping it off and throwing it out the stairwell.

Everything refills when you sleep, but you don’t want to find out firsthand what happens when heath drops to 0. From here on out, you begin to cut through everything you pass. Another railing flails and drops down before it lands a hit.

When you get to the third floor, there’s just more of the same old. Running forward, Melanie and Ethan collide with the desks, clearing a path.

“Go!” Ethan shouts.

You don’t hesitate. Running through, you springboard off of a mimic and over a crowd. A few of them nick you but don’t slow you. Reaching the clubroom, you screech to a halt like the desks and chairs behind you. The door opens an in the middle is a ghost.

“Ethan, is that you?” you hear Jay ask from somewhere.

“It’s Max.”

The ghost angrily speaks, “Max is it? Finally, I can have my revenge! I finally found a spot to relax in, and you just suddenly kick me out and take it. You scumbag, I’ll get you good!”

Maybe you might have done something wrong, but it’s too far to turn back now. Charging forward, you let out a war cry with the rest of your energy being drained.

He’s taken aback, which is all you need. You take a wide slash, and you see the ghost’s body get separated, only to join back together almost instantly.

Your body is exhausted, but you try again, the wind from your saber shredding part of him as he flies back. Retaliating, he swings forward, knocking you back onto a wall of the clubroom.

“Max!” Jay calls out.

The ghost hovers over you, ready to attack again. Then, from thin air, out comes a shadow, a twisting, transforming mist that begins to form a face and a body. A hand swings out as from the center of the clubroom the world fragments like a broken mirror. Shining colors bleed from the cracks, light from a different world -a different dimension- creeping through.

Hands all appear from the darkness all around, grappling onto every mimic and ultimately the ghost.

“No… NO! What did I do?” the ghost cries.

Desperate, he grabs onto you. Without the energy to resist, you can only watch as other mimics latch onto you and Jay as they’re pulled back. Your fellow club member yells out in protest, but it’s hopeless. The hands drag the ghost into the ever widening tear in reality, pulling you along for the ride.

You slam your eyes shut as you pass through the boundary, the light of a foreign sky searing into your vision.
