"Black Hearts. Cold Steel. Dark Deeds."

These are the words of the Black Company, the infamous band of mercenaries that has been on one side or the other of every major conflict on the continent since its founding.
The Company has seldom cared who they fight for or the cause so long as they are paid, and paid well, when the killing work is done. Though they may be considered by some to be little more than glorified brigands, it cannot be said that the Black Company is not good at what they do.

Recently the Company has taken up a contract with a new employer, one more powerful than any that have come before. An employer with endless ambition, as well as the means and lack of moral scruples needed to pursue it. An employer that pays well...

With a dramatic flair you crack open a previously untouched crate from the back of the wagon. With many an awed “Ooooh”s and “Aaahhh”s the majority of the platoon crowds around behind you, jostling to get a look at the device. It looks like a clumsier, bulkier version of your Ajiyimad pistol. The ammunition, a single large shell, is inscribed with numerous layers of wards and faintly glowing runes.

“So um… what is it exactly, boss?” Trooper Caroline Schuster eventually picks up the courage to ask as you pluck it out to give everyone a better look.

“It’s an ingenious device engineered by the sharpest minds in Weapons Development.”

Which is to say you bashed Qar-Tel from Supply and Page #136’s heads together until they agreed to design something that would allow you to put that scaly pile of fire-breathing death ASGORGA use. Which is just as well seeing as he’s eating half of the Company's bloody rations apparently when he’s not out hunting for damsels or knights or sheep (he’s not picky).

“With this device I can call down aerial reinforcements to deliver overwhelming firepower…” You grin at your own incredibly clever pun “…and provide much needed muscle to tenuous tactical situations.”

The crowd of Black Company Kriegstrom Shocktroopers looks suitably impressed, even though all you did was say ‘I fire this and call up a Dragon when things are looking fekked’ in a fancier way.

“I call it the…”

Use any time out of combat, or forgo attacking in a single round in combat, to fire it and summon a Draconic Payload. Try not to fire it directly above you.

The dark, damp smelling warehouse abounds with the muffled sounds of armour rattling and leather straps tightening. Steel whispers with menacing promises as blades are unsheathed, checked, sharpened and sheathed again. The older, wilier members of the Platoon cover the shinier potions of their armour in dirt, muck or whatever other debris is available, the fresher comrades following suit.

You’ve checked over everyone and everything twice now so as the last stragglers arrive and ready themselves you find yourself passing the time with…

Sergeant ‘Bad Hand’ is seated on a crate in the middle of the warehouse, seemingly oblivious to the murmuring hubbub and shuffling around him as he carefully slides his whetstone along his massive Two-Handed Blade. He grins as you approach.

“Prince.”

“Bad Hand.” You nod, taking a seat next to him. You’re silent for a moment. “So the plan…”

“Now that we’re in we let the 4th through the side gate and the Rangers cause a ruckus at the Manor while we seize the important parts. Nice, simple and solid enough. It’s a good plan.”

“Thanks.”

“I hope it goes tits up.”

“I-what?”

“Way I see it, if all goes well the violence will be at a minimum.” Bad Hand frowns, as if the very possibility disturbs him. “Means there won’t be no decent fight for us.”

Clearly you weren’t paying attention when Hirstun of Ligh mentioned the Grenn. There’s going to be plenty of violence alright you mad shit of a bastard. But you keep that to yourself, the last thing you need is Bad Hand running off by himself to tussle with a Grenn. You sigh and stand up.

“Where are you going?” Bad Hand frowns, pausing from his sharpening for a moment.

“To talk to someone sane. To talk to someone, not you.”

Considering it says "don't fire directly above" I'm assuming it comes back down or something. Therefore, in an emergency, we can just angle it away from us and fire over the enemy, possibly roasting them and setting a building on fire

You find Trooper Saint and Corporal leaning on the side of one of the wagons talking to a rather bored looking Legless Jessica.

"Listen Jessica, if anyone comes or if you hear the fighting reaching this way you just hide under the wagons. Okay?"

"Yeah squirt, don't run off or anything." Wow, she -is- a bitch. "And if you get the chance sink one of these in the small of their back. Not up here, won't be quick enough. Nope, lower and to the side. Yeah, that's it. Drop like a stone they will, I guarantee it."

Corporal 'White Bitch' Tara looks at Legless Jenny's namesake and give a disappointed sigh.

"Might have trouble reaching it though."

"Maybe the Lieutenant can spare someone? Sit tight and watch out for Jessica..."

"Maybe Jessica can reach that weak spot from the back of the wagon, gives her a bit of reach."

The two of them turn as you speak, Jessica shying away. Go figure, not afraid in the slightest of a horned, grey-scaled, scarred Wildborn but you in your Blackthorn armour and she’s all atremble. You recall being on the receiving end of an attack from an armed crippled child. Once you got over your profound surprise it was quite easy to subdue to the starved one armed Ajiyimad orphan, but you have to admit that you really hadn’t seen it coming.

“Surprise is your biggest friend.” You say, addressing Jessica. “Grown-ups tend not to see it coming from a little one like you. Not that hard to get the drop on them. For example, my favourite place to hide a blade in the boo- uh, up my sleeve.” You distinctly hear Corporal ‘White Bitch’ Tara choke on her laughter behind you.

Jessica manages not to flinch as you show her the best way of hiding numerous sharp objects on one’s person. While Saint seems uncertain about the moral soundness of teaching a child not even a dozen summers old the various methods of murdering someone, she comes around eventually. Better them than Jessica.

In the murky, dimly lit surroundings, adorned in the full regalia of your Blackthorn Armour, you cut quite an intimidating figure. It’s been a long standing tradition of the officers of Black Company that their armour be crafted to look as menacing and formidable as possible, even if the actual protection and enchantment granted by it isn’t as formidable as one might think. It must a be a trick of the light, or a bit more heel than it first looks in the boots, but your Blackthorn armour seems to make you loom over the rest of the soldiers in your Platoon. The spiked pauldrons, pitiless visage of your helm, the cold dark steel and billowing cape…
If ever there was a children’s storybook with a black-hearted villain, a monster of a man that looks every inch the evil opponent of light, truth and justice all very overrated ideals in your experience, you are the very image of that man.
As you stalk through the streets, some 30 men and women black of heart and black of mind behind you, the refugees unfortunate enough to be left without shelter seem to cower as you march past. The idea was that you’d appear to be just another town guard patrol, a little larger than most maybe, but somehow they can tell something is different about you. Maybe not different enough to sound the alarm, but enough to scurry out of your way quick enough.

You make your way to the designated side gate quick enough. Only a nominal few guards here, but it’s too open for the whole platoon to rush them and risk an alarm being raised. Better to send a single squad forward, replacing them for a shift perhaps. But who to send?

>1 SUCCESS
(We're just getting our bad rolls out of the way now, right?)

You know 1st Squad, you know what they can do and so you trust this job to them and the newly promoted CPL ‘Jack’.

Cororpal ‘Jack’ Marcus, natural-born Neumunster citizen and veteran of a dozen campaigns in the legions, is the obvious choice for someone to pass as a Neumunster comrade in the dark. The first guard at the gate doesn’t even throw out a the challenge word as they approach, ‘Jack’ has that built in NCO swagger that takes years to master. Besides, why would you be challenging people on the –inside- of the walls. It’s only when he frowns at the dark-skinned Trooper Belhamun behind him that the Corporal runs him through. Trooper Durvano and Trooper Schuster bring the other one down in a fit of methodical business-like stabbing. All very neat, professional and quiet-like.

None of what happens next is anyone’s fault really. It’s just the worst luck, the very worst luck that the –actual- patrol taking over the next watch arrives at exactly that moment. Outnumbered 3 to 1, it quickly becomes a melee very much against the Neumunster, but enough of them flee in time to ensure that the alarm being raised will be in a few moments. There won’t be time for all of 4th to trickle through before they have to launch their attack, hopefully the Rangers making their way over the wall elsewhere will be having an easier time.

“Fancy seeing you here, Lieutenant Hawk.”

*Hach-Ptoo*.” The aging Lieutenant spits another gob of phlegm “Lieutenant Prince. What a startlingly co-incidence. Would you mind telling me what the fek is going on?

“No time for that now, get whoever you can with you and move on the Town Watch barrack now. We’ll seize the main gate and then come help you.”

“Just as planned, but tits up right, sir?” SGT Bad Hand is grinning madly, damn that man.

“Right…” LT Hawk eyes the Sergeant disconcertedly. “Anything else?”

“Yeah…” you say

Also, to add onto this, we can slaughter them all AFTER they've surrendered, given up their arms and been rounded up

“Don’t kill anyone you don’t have to. I doubt the Town Guard feel a pressing need to martyr themselves.”

Lieutenant Hawk shrugs. "Sure."

"Besides," you continue "If it's necessary we can slaughter them all AFTER they've surrendered, given up their arms and been rounded up."

You hear Saint gasp at that. You realise you probably could have worded that better. Fek. Me and my big mouth. Meanwhile CPL 'White Bitch' doesn't quite fistpump, but she does grin at your last little statement, giving you those bedroom eyes again. Which is disturbing on several levels.

A few minutes later

The 7th Kreigstrom, about 30 of you huddled in an alleyway a stone's throw away from the Main Gate. A short jog, a little knife work and your job is mostly done.

Ahead, roughly a score of the Town Guard crowd around the the gatehouse, more joining them as they gather and point towards the where the bell is ringing form in confusion and some alarm. They know something is wrong, but they might not have clued on to the fact that it's already inside Kresden's walls. If you're going to strike, the time is now.

You turn back to the plethora of shadowed faces and furrowed brows, all eyes on you. You draw steel, the thirsty rasp of your own unsheathed blade echoed down the line, and you say...

No more drilling with our platoon... no more taking them out drinking... no more getting horribly injured and waking up to them crowded around our bed... no more taking them with us on extremely dangerous adventures where we all escape by the skin of our teeth... no more entering probably illegal underground fighting tournaments with them...

Instead they're just off doing other things. They could be dying offscreen right now. We would never know.

>1 Success
> No bonus, but at least no one groaned out loud at your line.

---------------------------------------

Obviously there's no hearty cheer at your words, that'd be downright unprofessional given the stealthy nature of this mission. Still, you expected something. Like a grunt of agreement... At least they all follow you out in the main thoroughfare as you stride towards the gate like the personification of a child's nightmare version of a knight, an equally black and heartless gang of soldiers following in your wake.

20 steps. The majority of the Watch is looking North, where the bell is ringing from.

15 steps. You can hear their worried mutterings, see nervous hands on sword hilts and cursive glances between them.

10 steps. One of them has noticed you, pointing your way and calling to the others in a half-confused and half-accusatory way.

[blue*BOOF*[/blue]

Boof?

Your entire formation slides to an uncertain halt when a midget sprints straight into you from an adjoining alleyway.

“Woah there!” You grunt, grappling with the miniature person. “Where are you going in such a hurry?”

You instinctively have the midget in a hold, giving you a good look at him. Not a short man, or a dwarf for that matter. A child, well-dressed. Not the clothes, but the shoes. No one dressed that poorly wears those kind of decent shoes. Awful conspicuous, good boots like that. Noble-born obviously, and clearly trying to disguise the fact. Your mind is already racing towards what a ransom might fetch when you’re interrupted by a gravelly voice.

“You will release the boy.”

You remember as a child the Orderlies took your dorm to see a travelling Kalgarri circus one time. There was a strongman there, Zambini or Zabossi or something. His plethora of chisseled muscles oiled up and flexing as he lifted wagons without effort. The goliath speaking to you from the alleyway reminds you of that. Except you don’t recall Zambini being armed with a great big axe. Or female.

“Or?” Damn my smart mouth.

She grins at you the way SGT ‘Bad Hand’ grins at the prospect of combat, or a particularly bloody steak. Hard to tell where she’s from. Not Kalgarri... nor the right type of brown for Ajiyimad. Perhaps even further South, to the Rakasha Raj?

“Or, long after we are both dust and back to the Goddess, people shall whisper of what I did to you this day.”

>>430012

You’re just about to order your men to attack her and the now-certainly-paying-attention town guard now before three more figures emerge from the alleyway, clearly surprised to see your lot between them and the gate.

First is the Chevalisse Paladin. You know he’s a Paladin because he’s slightly glowing and covered in holy symbols head to toe. You know he’s Chevalisse because he literally has the Chevalisse Fleur-de-Lysse sewn into every bit of his tabard. That and his head is raised up as if trying to avoid smelling you peasants.

Then there’s the Kalgarri Cataphract. Well-armoured, trained in all sorts of martial arts and deadly with bow and spear. If that wasn’t enough, judging from the icons and robes he was part of the Warlord’s Elite, one of the Golden Suns.

Behind those two hovers not literally a sickly looking fellow in a blue robe wearing spectacles. He looks like he could throw up any second, but if the vials and runic inscriptions on the hem of his robes are any indication he could be the most dangerous of the bunch. Where’s his staff? Mages always carry a staff…

A muscled warrior woman from the Raj, a Chevalisse Paladin, a Kalgarri Cataphract and a Mage.

Fekking Below it. This is just what you need right now. Adventurers…

Why yes. The plan is to not engage with them if we can but keep the goods. If we have to then it will be 30 vs 4 instead of 30 vs 4 + guards. The dogs we can deal with as they come, with a broken gatehouse and reinforcements but if these are do-gooders then giving the kid back wont get them off OUR back. >1 SUCCESS

Control the situation. Stabbing people is all well and good but when three of those people very good at stabbing are on the other side with a mage in tow it’s not cowardice to look for a peaceful solution.

”Hey! Shut up, muscle-lady! Cairsun, ignore muscle-lady. Lancer Murder! We are NOT doing this right now. Stow that shit and get back in formation.” You turn back to Trooper Saint, tightening your grip on the squirming, indignant child. “Saint, you tell me right now who this is.”

“He’s… he’s…” She looks on the verge of hyperventilating “Temuel, the Crown-“

At that very moment three things happen. LCPL Murder Meriam, having used your shouting as a distraction, stabs the Chevalisse Paladin in the side of the knee. The warrior woman throws a brick that hits Cairsun’s shoulder-plate with an audible *thunk* and the child stamps on your foot, causing you to curse as he pulls away out of your grip.

“To the Prince!” Pat Kergin hollers, and the rest of the Town Guard, filled with an unusual degree of courage, charge forward.

>Fire the FLRE! They might have heroes of both might and magic, but you have a Dragon.

>Do not fire the FLRE! Fire-breathing Dragon, flammable town. Add that to the fact there’s still the Grenn to deal with and you have a very bad combination.

(2) You don’t have Face Me so you can’t select your opponent, but I will allow you to select you who DON’T want to face.

It's my policy to only include My Blood For His as an option in combat rolls, otherwise the vote in not -immediate- combat situations is slowed down drastically.

If someone had asked for it before the vote was concluded I would have also asked for a vote before rolls occurred.

Perhaps in future I should include it as a secondary vote with all choices?
>>
>>430252
Nah, if we can't remember to use it, we don't deserve it.
>>
So guys, who do we send to geek the mage?
>>
>>430252
I think we just need to remember we have it, doesn't have to be a secondary thing for all choices.

Well it's fairly obvious no one wants to tussle with either the Mage or Pat Kergin.

I'll take a 1d3 please.

1 = Raj Lioness (muscle-lady)
2 = Chevalisse Paladin
3 = Kalgarri Cataphract

(Given the superior numbers you would start off with a battle buddy bonus against any one of them for the first round).

Well, that's that. So much for you playing the peacemaker, the turbulent shifting of both groups blends together into one bloody cacophony as the melee ensues.

You make a grab for the child-heir, but with the speed of lighting the Kalgarri Cataphract spins your hand away with a swipe of his spear. Damn, he's fast. If not for your Blackthorn armour you'd have lost your hand for sure. The Kalgarri says nothing, entering into a proper fighting stance as the child runs past him.

"Fine then." You furrow your brows, grip tightening on your two-handed blade. "You first."

You bring your pistol up at the same time that the Kalgarri throws him spear, the blade sinking into your shoulder. It hurts like the Below, but if not for your armour you’re sure you’d be missing a limb or most of it right now. But now your pistol’s aim is off, the shot wasted, as the Kalgarri launches into a flurry of blows trying to trip you up and finish you off.

It’s Corporal Hirstun of Ligh that saves the day, shoulder charging the Western Warrior and pummelling his exposed face again and again with the pommel of his blade. Then, with a trick you’ve seen only on the wrestling matts of the 12th Cav under LT ‘One-Eye’ Cao, the Kataphract launches Hirstun off and over him with a push of his legs.

But now you’re back on your feet, ready for Round 2. All around you that battle rages.

>MIRACLE!
>Town Watch and Adventuers Lost All Discipline!
>Town Watch and Adventurers Lost Cohesion! (Major bonus to personal combat)

------------------------------------------

The Town Guard are nothing special. Men not adverse to wielding a weapon but too old, too scared, too crippled or too young to join the legions. Your Kreigstrom are carving through them like an Albani Dwarf through a Boar Roast. Nearly just as messily as well. They had a shot of courage, sure, but courage doesn’t hold up well against skill and experience. Pat Kergin is doing well enough, but his men are dying all around him as Jack’s 1st and White Bitch’s 2nd Squad chew into them.

It’s the Adventurers that are giving you trouble. One-on-one few of your lads stance a chance against the likes of the Raj Lioness. That’s why they’re doing the smart, unfair thing, ganging up on her, Trooper Crackfoot, Godric Golden keep her away from your banner-bearer Kid while Cairsun comes at her from the side, beating away at her enchanted blade with his own.

You thank your unlucky stars that the Saint is with you. Probably the only reason the Mage hasn’t blasted you all to bits or turned you into frogs is because of her. Even if her sword doesn’t cut no more, the wards she knows by rote still seem to work well enough.

To your right Murder Meriam looks to be in a spot of trouble with the Paladin, but Pietre Verdun turns away the killing blow at the last moment. You’re doing it, you’re winning. But any moment now one of your people’s luck is going to run out.

Just as the Raj Lioness shoves Cairsun the Morning Light and the other Troopers aside, her axe raised above the defiant Trooper Kid wielding nought but a dagger, an arrow streaks out of the night and strikes its target. The back of her throat.

Out of the darkness from atop the walls, behind the enemy’s position, a storm of deadly shafts sink into their ranks.

In the end, the death of your opponent is fairly undramatic. Trying to step away from you, he took a hit to the back of his shoulder from one of the arrows. Trying to regain his balance he stumbled straight into Hirstun of Ligh, who took his arm off below the elbow.
The Kalgarri Cataphract had time to drop his composure and let go a pained groan before you slid your blade through his through out the back of his neck.

“Fight me fair you-hurrrk.” The Chevalisse Paladin drops in front of Knight-Taskmaster Verdun, blood gurgling from his mouth, CPL Meriam’s knife in the small in his back.
“If one cannot keep their warrior’s wits about them on the battlefield, sir…” The unperturbed Verdun lectures, cleaning his blade nonchalantly as ‘Murder’ Meriam stabs the prone Chevalisse repeatedly in a screaming fenzy. It’s the most emotion you’ve ever seen out of her. Ever. “Than one has no business taking up the blade in the first place, no?”

Despite the fatal nature of that first arrow, the Raj Lioness takes a while to go down. She reaches after Troopers but none offer her combat, leaving her huge form to be slowly puntctured with more and more arrows as her swings grow wilder. Finally, swaying on her feet, the axe slips from her fingers and she falls to the ground with a thud. That’s why you wear fekking armour.[/spoiler] Oddly enough the one she insulted, Cairsun the Morning Light, refrains from dealing the final blow with the same sad shake of his head. Crackfoot plants a handaxe in the back of her skull.

The Mage has set up some sort of blue barrier, arrows pelting off him and it’s few other occupants. Pat Kergin, covered in what looks to be his comrades blood, two other Town Guards and the Crown Prince Temuel. The boy-Emperor, or whatever you might call him, eyes his fallen companions with horror.

"No! Lu, Sir Gabriel, Sanu... why?"

Surrounded, outnumbered and if the Mage was of the kind to have teleportation capabilities crushing the lost of you would have been a piece of cake.

Thread is archived here: http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/qstarchive.html?tags=Black%20Company%20Quest

As promised here is a (fairly fekking awful) map. Until next time, lads.

This is going to sound weird but I am planning on entering a regional writing competition on short notice. I know, by it's nature, a lot of my posts are rushed and abound with frustrating errors, but I think the potential for something real good is in there with a bit of brushing up.

I would like to run it by you guys of course, it wouldn't be a betrayal of your participation to use some of the material here, would it?

>>433435
Beheading is still the preferred method of capital punishment in one of these countries so uh... we'll see.

>>433432
Plotting the downfall of hedonistic western civilisation obviously, Inshallah.

How does a flashback episode [Ajiyimad Edition] sound from the Prince's younger days? Hopefully I can run it from there.
>>
>>433616
Eh, I wouldn't be against it. Though it'll look a bit weird with the stripped out mechanics, Prince having an actually defined character, etc.

Also, are you going to Saudi Arabia?
>>
>>433616
Competitions give you feedback, you can connect to likeminded people - really no disadvantage in participating.

I don't mean that I'll be copying and pasting, it's a short story comp after all so only 1,500 words. Any sections in particular of the quest you think would make good foundation material?

Thanks for the support by the way, I feel quite luck as a QM.
Close, but no cigar.

*lucky

Clearly I also need to work on double-checking before posting.

>Any sections in particular of the quest
I would think a scenario where the protagonist defends a place (town, castle), the attackers nearly overwhelm the defenders, retreat - and then: big reveal that the defenders are the evil guys.
>>
>>433635
The section where we and the squad lie to Saint about the 'lost' Orphange was brilliant, I was kekking all the way to the chuckle bank.

The section where we and the squad lie to Saint about the 'lost' Orphange and mybe the big revile as well was one of the best parts

but at the same time when this is over(joks itl naver end) you could make this into a pretty good book.

Seeing prince act lovely dovey with his boss would be funny.

Kids, this is why you shouldn't fuck with your sister, you're gonna get an inbred redneck with a stroke

I really liked the bit between Syka explaining her plan and us tricking our way into the castle. Another good part was where we rescued trooper Kid and decided to start a band.

We have yet to book any gigs. That should be next.

To do:
>Loot Kresden
>Charity concert for Kresden - proceeds go to survivors.

Go for it, I'd be glad to help ya out bud.

Concert needs tunics, "I survived the Sacking of Kresden and all the Black Company let me keep was this lousy tunic". On the back the name of our band.

As-salaam 'alaykum, lads.

While another session isn't on the books for a few days at least, I am more than keen to get one started. Since I'm travelling at the moment, I thought we might get reminiscent and have a flashback episode from our campaign in Ajiyimad some 2-3 years ago, but I'll hold it to a vote all the same.

>1) Continue where we left off, negotiating the surrender of a Mage and the Town Guard of Kresden. Hopefully we won't have to resort to using the FLRE.

>2) Flashback episode to 2-3 years ago. Roughly a year into our stint as a Corporal, we explore the troubles of the Ajiyimad Campaign and our blossoming relationship with the then-2nd Lieutenant 'Cutthroat' Kiranova.
