It's been twenty years since Earth was uplifted by the Elders and humanity entered a new age of peace and technology. In the government-designated civilian sectors, people enjoy comfort, security, and an incredible standard of living, which is why your parents decided to raise you in one of these utopias.

What did they name you?
>>
>>421192
Aqua.

Our parents are hippies who whole-heartedly believe in the benevolence of our alien overlords.
We hate them with a burning passion for a lot of reasons, our name being one of them.

William Williams, or Bill for short.

I guess the backstory is that one of our ancestors was an early astronaut on a manned moon mission made by a group of European countries in the 2030s and changed his surname to remind his descendants of their cosmonaut blood.

You're Harold Startread, of the West Virginia Startreads. If your parents missed the "old world" you used to hear about from Uncle Ron before he disappeared, they never mentioned it, and always praised ADVENT effusively. You had a comfortable childhood, spending most of your days goofing off in school or at home browsing the ADVENT net.

Then your parents made their appointment at the local ADVENT gene clinic. You were sixteen years old and they were just going in to get some cancer cured. They should've been back within the evening, but they never returned. ADVENT officials either gave you nothing or directed you in circles, and over the years you grew disillusioned with the government.
>>
>>421379
It's been three years since then, and you're nineteen years old. Your best friends Will Williams and Aqua are in the shop with you, tinkering with their latest contraption, a remote control that can hack into anyone's electronic devices. Life's different out here in Glendale, a resistance haven... primitive, and unlike you imagined from crazy Uncle Ron's stories of the world before. But people here are different from those in the cities, in a way that you like. You've learned a lot living out here among free humanity, and are happy to be "fighting the good fight," as local radio jockey Four Dog would put it.

Yes, life has been good, but that's all about to change.

You hear the dropships' impulse engines come screaming in at the same time that Glendale lights up like an anthill on fire. People are running around everywhere as ADVENT troop carriers swoop low, right in between buildings, dropping off heavily armored ADVENT troopers as they fly by.

Will and Aqua are pressed up against a window, watching helplessly as ADVENT troopers move through the streets outside, shooting down anyone who resists arrest. Other groups are storming dwellings, kicking in doors and dragging the occupants kicking and screaming out into the street. The sounds of gunfire can be heard in the woods surrounding Glendale, and the flimsy walls of the shack shake as an explosion goes off a block away. You're starting to wonder why you thought it was a good idea to leave the city.

Will wants to sneak to the armory and grab some rifles to ambush the troopers with. Aqua thinks it's a fucking stupid idea that will get all of you shot, and refuses to leave the shop. Both turn to you, putting you on the spot.

"We're all going to the armory," you declare. "And we're not splitting up," you add to Aqua. The three of you are about to learn what it really means to fight the good fight. Hugging the walls as you move through the streets of Glendale, you avoid two ADVENT patrols and notice that they're herding civilians toward the little forum in the center of town, where an officer is directing affairs.

On the way to the armory, you duck into an alley to avoid a patrol group, and find the body of a resistance warrior who dragged himself here to die. Enormous puncture wounds have shredded his body and kevlar armor - ADVENT's mag rifles are serious business. But you pick a grenade off of his corpse, and move on.

As you approach the armory, you see that ADVENT has posted two troopers here and set the corpses of three resistance warriors and two ADVENT troopers in a neat row off to the side. You notice the weapons of the deceased lying next to the corpses in a pile.

It's time to devise your plan.

>Create a diversion, rush for the rifles on the ground and take out the troopers.
>Hit them with the grenade.
>Try to sneak into the armory another way.
>Think of something else (write in).
>>
>>421710
Use the grenade as the diversion. Throw it, and go for the guns. Shoot any survivors with guns while they're recovering. We lead for the guns, with Aqua behind us, while Will throws the grenade.

Make sure to go for human guns, the advent ones might be fingerprint-locked or something.

You quickly whisper the plan to your crew, and Will nods in approval while Aqua's eyes grow wide with apprehension. But there's no time to discuss this - Will pulls the pin and skips the metal ball along the dirt. It settles right in between one of the guard's legs, who screams just before it explodes and hurls the two halves of his body into the air. Holy shit, that was LOUD.

The other guard hits the dirt just in time, going prone and avoiding enough of the lethal shrapnel that his armor saves him. He's disoriented and deafened by the blast, but fires a burst of magnetic slugs haphazardly in your direction. You and Aqua make it to the rifles and Aqua screams nonstop as the two of you unload into the ADVENT trooper until you hear the repeated clicks of empty weapons. You stare at the orange blood leaking from the dozens of holes in the dead trooper's armor in shock - it's the first time you've killed anyone.

Will Williams is bleeding out of a grievous leg wound in the middle of the road, screaming in pain. Aqua is tugging at your arm, trying to snap you out of it.

What do you do about Will?
>Leave him, there's no time. Get in the armory.
>Get him off the road, carry him into a nearby building at the least.

The two of you rush over to your fallen friend, who barely sees you and continues screaming incoherently at both the sky and at his bleeding leg, eyes wide in panic. You get a hold of him as safely as you can and haul him through the double doors of the armory, right as an ADVENT officer steps out of the back room alongside his remaining trooper. He immediately stops talking to whoever he was trying to reach on comms, and shouts, "CONTACT!" pointing at the three of you. Both rush for cover.

You have an instant to act.
>Drop Will and dive for cover while firing wildly at [choose target].
>Drag Will into cover.
>Line up your rifle right up to where the [choose target] dove, get ready to nail him to the floor the second he pops out of cover.
>Think of something else, quickly.

I wanted to do some tactical drawings so you guys could really see what's going on, but I'm realizing that each one will take a lot of time until I figure out how to do it efficiently. Do you guys want them for combat eventually, or are you fine with abstraction for combat?
>>
>>421994
>Drag Will into cover

The poor man is bleeding heavily, we can't just dump him on the floor like discarded packaging! We'll get him to safety, no matter how long it takes!
>>
>>421994
I think it's something you should keep working on to find a good system for, for that true XCOM feels.

That said, we're fine with this, especially for small scale fights, for now.

Also... Shit. We're not winning this. With them having reinforcements inbound, that being an officer, and Will being down... We'll need cavalry or the luck of the gods.

That said, gotta do what we can.

"Aqua, keep them pinned!" Drag Will into cover, then start running around for the flank, staying low. They'll eventually pop up and start attacking Aqua, and that's when we'll hit em from the side.

Just gotta pray she keeps her heads down when they break suppression.

"Aqua, keep them pinned!"

You drag Will into cover behind the remains of a crude barricade the previous defenders of the armory had tried to set up. Not a second later, magnetic slugs pound the barricade and you know you'd be dead if this table weren't made of alien alloys. Behind another portion of the barricade to your right, Aqua spots the shooter and hoses down the doorway he's hiding behind. You hear a surprised yelp, but the two continue to exchange fire while you hear the officer shouting commands frantically from somewhere in the back.

Someone roll me 2d100 to see how this flank attack goes.

You urge Will to stay down, before taking off. One, two, back in cover before three, just like you learned from the few resistance warriors who dared to raid ADVENT supply convoys. Another dash could get you around the giant reception desk the ADVENT officer is using as cover, but then Aqua shouts loud enough for you to hear, "Shit, I'm out!"

Unfortunately, the ADVENT trooper heard the good news, and steps out toward Aqua, advancing on her cover while blasting away and keeping her pinned. In a second he'll be right on top of her.

Aqua is in danger, and Will has stopped screaming.
>Dash the rest of the way, flank and shoot the officer.
>Unload on the trooper, either cutting him in half or suppressing him.

You spot the trooper advancing on Aqua and spray your rifle wildly, first at the officer and then at the trooper. The officer catches a few bullets on his helmet and he yelps as he ducks down, blind firing in your general direction and grazing your shoulder. You wheel around and hose down the trooper with unsteady aim as he turns on the spot and fires back in surprise. Both of you miss spectacularly, but it gives Aqua a second to load her last magazine with trembling hands and hit the trooper square in the chest with an excessive burst.

The ADVENT officer, seeing the last of his squad fall, panics and dashes back through the door to the weapons locker.

The room is completely riddled with bullet holes, and you smell smoke and blood in the air.
>After that officer, gun him down!
>Have someone watch the doors while the other attends to Will.
>Ditch the armory, get Will out of here before backup arrives.

>>

Officer already called in reinforcements, they'll be on this place like a ton of bricks. Have Aqua grab whatever she can from here, first aid, wilderness supplies, ammo, in that order, while you grab Will and start getting out.
>>
Last update for the night, I'm just going to continue posting in this thread when I can tomorrow. Thanks for joining!

>>422298
>>422303
With Aqua's help, you shove whatever's left of the barricade into the doorway, and tell her to check on Will while you reload your rifle and hurry toward the weapons locker.

As you check the room from the doorway, the officer fires his rifle and nearly takes your head as you duck back. The bastard is sitting right in front of a crate of ammunition, possibly counting on you not wanting to accidentally blow up the entire weapons locker. At this range, the resulting explosion would surely take down the small building.

Behind you, Aqua has tied a belt firmly around Will's leg above the knee and wrapped her jacket around the wound, and she's nearly hysterical as she shouts, "I don't know what else to do, he won't wake up!"
>>
>>422415
Uuuuuuh, panic, I don't know what to do now.. Their reinforcements means we're doomed, we can't take out the officer, so we'll be flanked, we got no medical expertise to help Will, Aqua's panicing. O_o

Out of ideas.
>>
>>422415
Alright at this point we should scavenge from the bodies around us, then take a pot shot at the ammo cache, fuck that guy.

Afterwards we bail, drag Will with us to find some medical supplies and get the hell out of dodge while we can. Most times reinforcements come in after five turns which is like maybe five minutes I think.

>>422456
That's Xcom baby, left in situations where you dont know what the fuck to do.
>>
>>422415
Well shit. Have her check if they got the femoral artery. If they did, might as well put him down.
>>
>>422497
>>423141
Fuck this officer. You tell Aqua to check and see if they got Will's femoral artery, and she just shakes her head, "His what?!"

"Forget it, we can't stay here, come on, grab any ammo you can and let's get him the fuck out of here!" You maintain overwatch on the door while Aqua grabs a few magazines from the dead trooper and drags Will onto a table.

"Alright, ready!" she says, peeking around the corner of the entrance. "But we've got problems!"

"One sec!" you shout back. You fire off a burst toward the officer, hearing his surprise as the bullets smash into his armor and the crate next to him. You're already on your way over to Will by the time he gets up, and out of the building and on the street by the time the ammo explodes. The officer goes flying into a wall and crashes to the floor, spine broken. "Let's go!"

The three of you just barely escape, the blast wave nearly knocking you over as it leaves the building. Everywhere you look, you see ADVENT troopers closing in. Groups of three down the street to your right and left, and a group of two in the alley ahead, all closing in on you with rifles at the ready, moving from cover to cover.

Hurry, they are coming.
>Have someone drag Will into the alley behind while the other suppresses pursuers, we can still do this.
>Split up and try to escape through the alleyways as fast as we can, we have to leave Will.
>Lay weapons down and try to surrender, it's Will's only hope of getting medical attention.
>Put Will out of his misery and make a last stand here.
>Think of something else.

Advent will give him the medical attention he needs, before putting us all duly before a fair and free trial for our crimes against the state.

We'll probably get a pretty long sentence, especially now we've cold-bloodedly killed these poor Advent enforcers, but I suppose that is just.

Aqua drags Will into the alley behind you while you cover them, emptying your rifle in the direction of the closest group of troopers. All of them unload on your position and continue to fire as they advance, forcing you to duck back into the alley.

Shit, there's a fucking fence in the way! Aqua is desperately trying to pull the chain link fence aside with all her strength, which isn't nearly enough. There's no way you can get Will over or around, and ADVENT troopers have taken position at the side you entered from.

You nearly shit yourself as the ADVENT troopers move out of their stacked up position, charging into the alley together in a phalanx and setting up a double firing line. You remember Mom and Dad and wonder if you'll see them again...

And then an explosion rocks your world. You're blind and deaf, and so shocked you don't even realize what's happened. As you regain your balance and look to see what happened, you see them dropping in, guns blazing. Soldiers of some kind, definitely not anyone from the colony by their outfit, fast roping in from high above with guns blazing. They tear through the troopers with terrifying efficiency, and by the time your hearing returns it's already over. The brick walls are smeared and spattered with orange blood.

"Whoo!" exclaims a grey-bearded old man. He's wearing different armor from the others, and holding an enormous revolver. "Now that's my kind of drop! Takes me back!"

A bald soldier, carrying a mag rifle and grenade launcher, approaches the two of you while four others spread out and secure the alley. "Nice," he says, appraising your dropped rifles and the wet stain running down Aqua's khakis. "You guys the rookies we're supposed to meet?"

Recovering quickly, you bluff for all you're worth. "If you wanted someone who still has a pulse, then yeah, we're the rookies you're supposed to meet. Now get a medic down here and make sure Will keeps his." Baldy and Gramps raise their eyebrows, but step aside as a badass looking Latina with a drone steps through and gets to work peeling off Will's soaked "bandage."

A soldier wearing a ball cap and headset finishes coordinating with whoever's on the other end, and joins your little gathering. "I'm Sergeant Brian Deangelo. Firebrand is taking a long circuit, coming around for evac in just a few. We can get your friend out of here soon, but that tourniquet didn't do him any favors. Vasquez, get him packaged." On his order, Vasquez unhooks a strange device from her belt and pushes it right onto the wound, releasing a blue foam that hardens inside and around it. "Jorgenssen, get up on the roof of that building there and give us overwatch, put a flare on his position when Firebrand's ready for pickup. Rest of you are on me, Central says he has eyes on at least 2 more squads in the center of town. Chan, pass these rookies some ammo."

A short Asian girl wearing a beanie and loaded like a pack mule waddles over, and simply tosses you her shoulder bag. "Take it all," she says, "We don't use this stuff anymore but we figured you might need some."

The soldiers are guarding the alley and you have a moment to breathe.

Chan passes you a canteen, and you and Aqua take turns drinking and reloading. You notice, though, that Aqua's eyes never leave Will's face, and from the expressionless look on her face you know she isn't ok.

"Alright, bring it in," says Deangelo, motioning the squad together. "Jorgenssen's got eyes on fourteen contacts down main street, dozens of civilians corralled in the center of town and dropships moving in and out. Probably think they still own the place. Chan and I are front line, we're taking the alleys. Wiseman, wide flank, Vasquez, get on that rooftop way over there with the rookies. Engage on my signal and check your background, Central doesn't want any more incidents."

"I'll go," you say, "but my friend is..." The sergeant's neck snaps back toward her, and he nods. "Well alright, Blue, stay with your friend and help Firebrand get him out of here, rest of you, move it out!" If Aqua barely responds, murmuring something at Will.

You marvel at how swiftly and stealthily the soldiers move in and out of cover. They dash forward together and with perfect coordination, as if guided by an invisible hand. You feel clumsy pulling yourself up the ladder one rung at a time, but get yourself over the edge and take position next to Vasquez on the roof, rifle at the ready.
>>
>>425309
Alright, quick question while I continue. Now that you're part of a bigger squad, do you guys want to do combat with tactical drawings, or continue with the telltale, "make a choice" style I've been running so far? I really don't feel like this is our squad at the moment, so I'd prefer if it was just "Make a choice" style until it's really our squad.

You're so close to Vasquez that you can hear a faintly audible, "Now!" through a previously unnoticed earpiece she's wearing. You snap your eyes back to the town center just in time to see a great fiery explosion go off right on top of a landed dropship. The explosion engulfs the two troopers standing guard by it entirely.

The other troopers run for cover, hit the deck, or begin firing haphazardly at the rooftops around them, searching desperately for targets to shoot at. You can see heavy fire pour out of a nearby alley and hear a loud CRACK echo through the air, tearing apart 3 more troopers who never saw it coming. Some civilians are making a break for it, while others foolishly try to rush or grab ADVENT troopers and get blasted for their trouble.

The square is total chaos, and it's hard to pick out a clear target. Civilians are everywhere, but from your position you spot:
>Four troopers surrounding an ADVENT officer, trying to get him to safety through a throng of panicking civilians (medium range).
>A trooper shooting any civilian that gets too close to him, blasting away with extreme prejudice whether he's being attacked or not (medium range).
>A group of troopers stacking up near the alley where Waller, Chan and Deangelo are positioned, it looks like they're priming grenades (far).
>Two troopers point up at your position on the roof, and slip into the crowd (medium range).

We can't take shots at the guys who noticed us or the officer due to civs, but I think we can shoot at the trooper shooting civs, because he's probably clearing a wide space around himself.

Meanwhile.

"Two guys just spotted us. Waller, you've got some troopers priming grenades."

We don't know what the appropriate response is, but we can inform them so they can take that response.

Vision is important.

Speaking of which, after taking the shot on that trooper, turn and aim at the ladder, going prone, slightly to the side of the ladder.

Rolled 20, 52, 50, 19, 88, 48, 39, 100, 21 = 437 (9d100)

Alright, roll a 1d100 for me while I write the next part. I'll take high rolls so more than one person can roll. I'm still playing around with how I use the dice, but once I have a system that works for me I'll make the rules a bit more clear.

Seeing the trooper killing wantonly, you know he has to go down, and you have a decent shot. You line it up carefully, but your hands are shaking in rage as you take aim, you fire off a burst that knocks him flat on his ass. You're lucky he cleared the civilians around him. Before you can finish him off, his head vacates his helmet through an enormous exit wound, spilling onto the dirt like chunky salsa. You hear the crack a second later, and Vasquez gives you a nudge, saying, "Bruce says good job, Rook."

"Two guys spotted us, pretty sure they're gonna try to make their way up here. And there's some troopers moving on the alley."

"I've got 'em," Vasquez replies, setting aside her rifle. "Just keep me covered." She pulls a console out of her pack, and you recognize some of the parts on it. Is she a hacker? Her drone goes zipping off toward the alley, while you take a very low position near the ladder.

(I have to wrap up tonight, but if the thread is up tomorrow I will continue, just as today. I'll try to make some templates so I can make tactical combat a possibility. Thanks for joining in today!)

No! I'm continuing today, after some lunch. The weekend got away from me.

I've also decided not to do tactical drawings for combat until after we have a true squad.
