The world was once ours and we shared it equally. The forest was our domain and it stretched between all four corners of the world. We lived in peace and upheld the balance. There was death, but no suffering. It was all part of the circle of life. However, all that changed when the creatures with the Red Flower came to this world. Humans, the Guardians called them. They came in the night and burned down our forests, killed our guardians, raped and pillaged our lands. There was no end to their crusade against us and no reason behind their cruelty.

We, the creatures of the forest, were brought close to extinction before our salvation came: The World Tree, the center and the roots of our Forest that once spanned the world, called us all back to it. Within its borders the last Guardian, the Great Horned Owl Kafuu, placed three barrier spells that would keep the Red Flower out and whoever wielded it. Before he fell into a deep slumber from which there would be no awakening, he placed the new role of Guardianship upon the red-eyed Awoo Race. They would guard this new forest realm behind walls of magic until the end of time.

After three centuries of peace, the first of the three barriers were broken and we received a grim reminder that the Humans will not stop until all Creatures of the Forest lie dead.

You are Lin, a 17 year old Awoo girl who dreams of becoming the Strongest Guardian and assuming the mantle of the Hero that will save the Forest Realm and all those who live beneath the World Tree!

[STATS]
>Combat: [+++]
>Social: [+]
>Knowledge: [++]

[Traits/Perks]
>[Childish Energy]: You have an unusual amount of stamina and don't get tired easily from physical activities.
>[You Control It]: In a moment of great fear, you persevered without your Guardian Blade. Your mind can now endure more and you may enter fights/battles without your Blade by your side.
>[O Captain! My Captain!]: You’ve earned the Loyalty and Trust of your Guardian Team. Whenever you perform a Social Roll with them, you get +1 on the dice coupled with your actual Social Rank. [Does not affect Chao]
>[Inner Wolf]: The Ancestral White Wolf within you has awakened and you’ve gained a portion of the speed it was known for. +1 on the dice when performing a Reflex/Agility Save.

[Abilities]
>[Berserker Mode]: You may trigger this state to activate your rapid regeneration ability given to you by your inner wolf, but the longer you stay in it, the steeper the price becomes for using it. It lasts until all external and internal wounds have been healed and after it’s been used, it takes at least an hour before you may use it again. [The Price]: Every time you use this ability, your resistance to the Red Flower within you grows weaker, allowing it to eventually assume control of you.

Last Time on Hero Guardian Quest: Team 2 reached the western village that had been turned into the main base of operations for the Kenshin Company and the campaign into the Western Front against the Human incursions in the lost forest realm. Lin and her team of guardians discovered that the orders they were given from Rushi was a ruse and they have new orders to follow: Three locations needed to be uncovered, possibly mapped, and ‘dealt with’: A Waterfall to the Northwest that may have a secret behind it, a clearing or a meadow used regularly by human hunters in the west, and a crossroad to the Southwest for the road made and used by human military forces traveling between the south and the west and vice versa.

After re-supplying themselves and spending a night at the local inn, the team set out into the Western Front, past the barrier. Their first location was decided by Captain Lin: The Waterfall. Behind the wall of water, they found a cave filled with cages that held a couple of Awoo prisoners. Team 2 defeated the masked humans and the hunters that were planning something with the imprisoned guardians.

Mei was wounded during the fight and while Jin and Chao went off to investigate the tunnels in the cave, Lin and Heim remained and protected the unconscious prisoners and the resting team member from possible incoming Human forces. It turned out to be Kenshin Guardian Scouts, but when one of the prisoners remembered what horrors might await those entering the tunnels, Lin rushed in to warn Jin and Chao.

However, Lin came too late and found a wounded Chao and a dead Jin from a pit trap. So ends the tale of the Guardian Twins and Team 2 is one member shorter once more.

Five versus one. Not the best odds, but this Knight-Commander have always made it his mission in life to defy and challenge the odds at every turn. Some call it suicidal, while others refer to it as arrogant foolishness. It’s a bit of both, but he’d claim it’s to always push and break his limits. One of the major traits he takes after the Lord-Commander and an even greater reason why he’s the apprentice and future successor of the aforementioned.

Three of the five men charge the shirtless Knight at once after the signal is given. They all wield an assortment of wooden blades or spear-shaped sticks - and being a Master-at-Arms himself, he settles for two blades and a small wooden weapon similar to a knife. The latter finds itself swept into one of the charging men’s face upon the start of the duel. It crashes in the dust, alongside the unarmored soldier. The Knight-Commander equips his second wooden blade in his other hand and makes a quick, but mocking display of the ambidextrous nature that is his fighting style. The two other charging soldiers meet him head on, but they find their blows parried repeatedly. Inevitably they’re disarmed swiftly before the Commander switch the blades between his hands behind his back in a dance of swords and strikes down both of his opponents simultaneously. The unconscious soldiers bites the dust.

The two remaining men trade dire looks as their sweaty hands tighten around the grips of their weapons. They’re about to attack a fully ready Knight when a tall figure standing atop the edge of the pit dug into the ground clears his voice loudly and disapprovingly. The soldiers straighten their backs and salute the man at first sight. The Commander already knows who it is.

“I’m in the middle of something, Ser Hauffen.” The Knight-Commander groans, throwing a bothered glance back up at the steel clad man with graying beard and hair, and an estranged look in his eyes. He’s proudly wearing the tabard emblazoned with the Kingdom’s sigil: A crimson fire with black outlines upon a field of white.

“I don’t care.” He replies curtly, as if he’s addressing a gutter rat, “Our Lady demands your presence, Ser.” Adding the title must have been hard, even for a man of his status.

“Fine. It’d be rude of me to reject her romantic advances.” The Commander shrugs with a carefree smile, dropping the training swords promptly. The steel gauntlet of Ser Hauffen tighten swiftly around the grip of his own blade at the disrespectful remark, but he tempers justice with mercy and leaves with a brooding appearance.

As per the customs, the Knight bows respectfully to both the conscious and unconscious soldiers that entered a duel with him willingly before he calls for his squire. A skinny boy with ruffy, thin golden hair meets the Knight-Commander as he climbs out from the pit with a pair of fresh clothes, boots, his gauntlets, and a bucket of cold water. The Knight pours the freezing water over him and then goes on changing his clothes and equipping his boots and gloves while he’s at it in the middle of town.

“Gratitude, Ollie. Come, I’ll show you something that’s probably going to be more interesting for you than me.” The Knight-Commander urges his quiet and often unassuming squire to follow him to the Keep built at the far end of town. ‘The Lady’ - as her zealot knights call her - live within those protective stone walls while planning her next moves in the ‘ever changing’ eastern campaign. Ever since the Commander was forced to join his host to hers two weeks past by orders of the Lord-Commander, he’s been struggling to let her order him around. ‘Humility and great leadership’ is the current lesson his master favors. A lesson that he’ll pass eventually, as he has with every other test up to this point.

An armed soldier joins them on their march heading for the Keep. It’s one of the knight’s own men. He gives his Commander the clean report from the scouts coming back from the three stone towers and he informs him of a dispute that has arisen in the village between men from his Legion and a couple of the villagers. A misunderstanding that needs to be resolved presently by a Knight-Commander.

The Knight assures his man that he’ll take care of it, but his thoughts are conflicted while watching the soldier leave.

The decision isn’t as clearcut as he’d like it to be, but it’s what he signed up for when he accepted the title of Knight-Commander and the responsibilities therein. However, his voice is not the one that which commands the most respect and loyalty from both sides of the argument. The men might be of his Legion, but the villagers have only known one protector for the last years since the first magical wall fell to that Red Creature. His utmost interest lies with becoming a great leader in due time, but that also involves humility and a basic understanding that sometimes another voice of reason is better than your own. The Knight is painfully brought back to reality when he feels a fast and hard punch straight in his solar plexus. He almost doubles over, but his balance remains steady. Casting a gaze upwards, his eyes land on his squire.

“Heh. Good job, Ollie.” He commends his loyal squire. If there’s anything that grinds his gears more than remembering his days of latrine duty as a page, it’s when he gets lost in thought. That’s why he has instructed his squire to always punch him when he stops somewhere and appears to be deep in thought. It’s not that he resents thinking, but getting stuck in there is one helluva ride he doesn’t want to experience again. Twice is already twice too many times. As long as Ollie doesn’t punch his face or his family jewels, he’s allowed to hit him anywhere. A strange, but fruiticious deal. It also allows Ollie to let out any and all pent up frustration he has with his Commander. Something he can’t seem to do with words.

The pair finally reach the edge of town where a large Keep has been built within four walls of stone that towers above most of the trees that used to stand here. There’s unfortunately no moat surrounding it along with a drawbridge, but at least they had the common sense to include a portcullis. The four towers built at each corner of the walls have narrow arrow loops and all along the walls and the battlements there patrols archers, both those from the Legion, but also recruited hunters. It’s amazing how fast humans can create things in a matter of a few years with some blood, sweat, and determination. The Knight and his squire traverse over the marked road filled with stones and hard sand, pass by the open portcullis, and then through the bailey where some of the men stationed inside glance your way, but no salute is given. It speaks volumes of how divided the Legions are, even when the two Knight-Commanders get along.

Upon entering the keep, the pair inevitably find their way through the halls and climb up to the third floor. The flight of stairs are a breeze to the Knight, but Ollie struggles with them. He has great stamina when it’s needed, but stairs are his natural enemy despite not being out shape. He could use a little more meat on his bones, but the Knight-Commander isn’t his mother. He’ll eat when he needs to and however much he wants to. He can damn well decide that on his own. It’s not how the Lord-Commander raised the Knight for 12 years, but he’s not a copy of him.

After passing through a hallway filled with torches, banners with the Kingdom’s sigil, and several Knights of the Lady stationed in intervals along the way, the Knight-Commander and his squire finally find themselves in the presence of the Lady. It’s a smaller room with several chairs, a large oval table upon which there lie several maps and open scrolls strewn about and dozens lit candles littering the room. Their dancing light accompanying the few torches on the walls. At the end of the table, on the opposite side of where the pair came in, the unarmored - yet armed - woman stand hunched over two of her parchments and a book. Her eyes are drowning within the words, but she doesn’t fail to notice the newcomers in the room.

“I requested your presence twice earlier today, Ser Ishimura.” She interrupts any attempt on the Knight’s part to greet her properly.

“Always a pleasure~, Knight-Commander.” Ser Ishimura gives her a respectful nod with his trademarked smile while his squire bows slowly as her blue-white eyes wander from the pages up to the men before her. She pushes parts of her grey, short hair out of her face as her eyes land on the younger of the two men.

“Why is your squire accompanying you?” She raises an eyebrow at the boy, looking over at Ishimura for a proper answer. Whatever she has to say, she means to say it only between four ears, and four alone.

“It’s about time I teach Ollie something or another. He has to learn more about knights and how to command sooner or later.” Ishimura shrugs lightly. The Lady stares at her fellow Knight-Commander for a few moments, massaging her nose bridge, visible frustrated with him.

“For the last time, his name isn’t Ollie. It’s Shirogane!” To which Ishimura looks at his squire with a raised eyebrow of his own. The young boy makes eye contact, but he remains as unfazed as ever.

“I don’t know what to tell you. He looks like an ‘Ollie’ to me.” The knight offers a goofy grin that paints a smile in return on Shirogane’s face before he looks away. The Lady remains calm, despite her apparent frustration.

“Shirogane, you’re dismissed.” She commands him and with a nod in the Lady’s and his Knight’s direction, the squire leaves the room, closing the iron doors on his way out.

“That seemed a bit unnecessary. I was looking forward to hanging out with him today. Oh well~!”

“Are you going to be serious this time, Ser Ishimura?” The Lady stares him down across the table, tapping at the papers she was reading earlier. The Knight answers the question with a sly smirk.

“Of course, Commander Hua Sing.”

24 hours ago. That’s when Mei was put to sleep to heal her wounds. After that everything went to hell. Her head is resting against your shoulder where you sit with her back between your legs, leaning against a nearby tree. The hard rain is pouring down all around you, but at least you and the others had enough time to make some protection against the incoming shower by twisting and tying the overlooking branches together to form a small, but sturdy roof each. Not far from where you sit, Chao and Heim are leaning against their own trees, protected by their own covers.

Chao got patched up with what supplies the guardian scouts had before they left with the three former prisoners and Jin’s body. He’s lucky enough to get buried in a respectable place. A courtesy his brother never got. Then again, there’s nothing to feel lucky about. He’s dead and you could have saved him, just as you could have saved Kun. You broke your own promise to yourself. You failed to keep the rest of your team alive. Will you even be able to look Mei in the eyes when she awakens? Last time you checked her wound, there was nothing but a scar under the sticky leaf. Her nerves, flesh, and skin has healed as best it could over these many hours.

What do I do when she wakes up?

>Tell her yourself. It’s for the best if it comes from you. She deserves the truth the moment she can hear it.

No! I need to tell her myself. If I can’t face the responsibility of my decisions, I’m unfit to lead. They entrusted this role to me.

With this conviction in your heart, you sit by the tree, listening to the hard rain pouring down all around you. The last conversation you had with Jin comes to mind. He left this world still angry at you. The two of you never reconciled. It might have seemed like a small thing, but there was something bigger pressing Jin’s anger forward onto you. Something you’ll never truly know. You assume it must have been the death of his twin brother. Much like with Kun, you never got to know Jin as much as you’d like to before his untimely demise.

However, you can’t let this get you down right now. You need to maintain a heart of oakheart to turn this pain into power. To soldier on. If you let go of your control, you’ll turn into a blood crazed, mindless beast with only revenge in her heart like Chao and Heim does in the midst of battle. That’s not who you are, nor will it ever be who you are. Sensei taught you better than that and you promised you’d make him and gran-gran proud above everyone else. No, letting go and embracing the anger seething within you isn’t the answer. It’s the opposite of an answer.

Suddenly you feel Mei moving and she let out a strained yawn while stretching her body in every direction. Her scarf has never left her neck and she cuddles her lower face into it before her eyes open to the sound of rain and the non-existing pain from before. You remain seated where you sat down hours ago while she gets up, still stretching and taking in her surroundings, refreshed from 24 hours of sleep. Her gaze meets Heim who promptly casts his own down on the wet ground, but Chao doesn’t look her way.

“Where’s Jin?” She asks aloud after turning to you. Her first question isn’t what happened at the cave or about her wounds or the prisoners. It’s about Jin. You try your damnedest to look her straight in the eyes when you tell her, despite the shame swelling up inside of you faster and faster.

“He’s… dead, Mei.” You have no tears to share with her. You can’t let her see you like that. She stares at you for a while - not saying anything - the gears in her head grinding to a halt. Eventually she turns to the other two, asking the same question.

“Where’s Jin? Heim, where is he? Chao?” Her voice sounds distressed and you might never know what kind of emotions are overcoming her at this moment. She heard you, but she can’t believe it’s true. She refuses to. You rise to your feet, a comforting hand reaching out to her.

“Mei, I’m sorry. It all--” You begin, but the moment your hand reach her shoulder, she flinched away from your touch, backing out into the rain like a wounded animal. Her stare is shaking and her fists are clenched. She’s crying and she’s contemplating whether or not she should punch you. Although the thought must sound pretty good, she decides to run instead. With a three step head start, she leaps into the nearest tree and continues straight forward, heading only the Tree knows where.

Let's hope. Also, I agree with the other poster in just labeling us as something of a death-watch. No matter what we say to her in the next upcoming post, I hope that we give her the option to leave our service. Specifically because we like her. Let's face it, we're going to get people killed on our service, so I'd rather it be people we don't really know or care about.

If you really have a death wish or something? That's when you sign up to be under us. Otherwise, I think it be better for morale if we acted as a solitary agent.
Like Chao implied. We success in our missions, great. We die, well that's just one less risk.

>Go after her.

Your mind is empty, but your feet carry you onward by instinct alone. You still can’t leap from tree to tree, but you do just as well with the rocks available to your disposal. The balance in your jumps have grown more steady over the years of training during the trials. Had you attempted to jump between rocks in the middle of hard rain before the fall of the first barrier, you’d have slipped and tasted mud long ago. However, despite your increasing speed as you follow your fleeing team member, your leaps aren’t filled with confidence. You’re letting your instincts carry you on this one because you’re not sure if she’ll forgive you even if you catch up to her. You can’t let that doubt forsake your hunt. Had this been inside the ‘comforts’ of the second barrier, you would have let her run. Out here? Not a chance. You’re not losing Mei. Never.

Your chase eventually leads to you a small clearing. As you leap out from the thick scores of the forest, you land firmly upon the wet grass, staring Mei down from afar where she stands with her back against you. In this small area surrounded by trees, there’s nothing but a large, disfigured rock in the middle and a free gaze to the sky. Mei is resting her head against the hard stone with hands and arms hanging low when you approach her. She hears you coming judging by her ears shifting in your direction.

“Leave me alone.” She begs quietly. You barely hear her over the smattering of the hard rain. You can’t see her tears in the rain either, but she’s crying all right.

“I can’t do that, Mei.” You raise your voice over nature’s own tears from the dark sky. She doesn’t reply. Excluding the hard sound of water crashing into the ground constantly, there’s silence between you. Finding the right words to make things all right again are not easy. Maybe even impossible. Things will never be the same, just like when Kun died. Something has broken between the two of you. She relied on you. Trusted that you’d use your powers and newfound strength to give the team nothing but victory. She dared to hope and it came back to bite her. Hard. She must feel like a fool for trusting you, her Captain.

“I’m sorry, Mei.” The only words you can muster turn her from the stone to you. Her face is filled with regret and hurt, and her eyes seething with anger. Her teeth are clenched and her body shaking from the cold and the emotions raging on inside.

“Fuck your ‘sorry’! Fuck Chao! Fuck Heim! Fuck the Guardians! Fuck Humanity! But most of all, Fuck you, Raubtier!” She screams at the top of her lungs while stabbing you from afar with her pointing finger, releasing all her anger as she shifts about, punching into the stone repeatedly. When you see her draw blood from her hand you go in to stop her, but the moment you get close to her, she spins about and sucker punches you. The force of the hit sends you reeling to the ground, back first. You feel something warm dripping from your nostril. You deserved that.

Mei towers above you and you can barely make out her face amidst the constant rain drops crashing into your eyes.

I can see that. You don't have to write exactly what she's supposed to say because I'll most likely change it to fit her character, but the message behind what she's supposed to say is an alright write-in.
>>
>>393151

"...I'd apologize... but I don't think you'd care. I made a promise. I failed that promise. I'd be a fool to promise anything else.

Heh...you know I wanted to be a hero? I wanted to be the strongest guardian. Savior of the Awoo, and all who live beneath the World Tree.

That was a stupid ideal, wasn't it? All I've managed is to get people killed, and help win one victory that's given us a bit more than a prayer at survival, at the cost of the Guardians' respect...and quite possibly my mental stability.

If you want to leave my team...I'll vouch for you. You deserve better. Hell, Chao deserves better. It's the one thing I can do right.

Otherwise...well, I doubt with this, anyone will still trust me. I doubt they deserve to, and I won't ask them of it.

Go. Tell them I sent you back. Tell them of Jin's death, and of my failure. Tell them I'll finish the mission alone, or die trying!

...It's what half of the Guardians want, anyway. I can at least attempt to follow THOSE orders to satisfaction."

Well since I'm shit at write-ins I'll just put down my points
>You both joined the Guardians of your own free will
>That naturally means fighting and killing humans
>People on both sides were eventually going to die
>If you can't handle that then leave
>That being said it was ultimately my choice that got Jin killed so I'm sorry
>>
Gonna have to change that 'You are...' intro blurb. We ain't no hero, and if you think we'll be one, you're playing a different game than we seem to be.

While other things will be brought up, from what I've summed up from these write-ins, I got two prompts you may vote on before I return to writing.

>Ask her not to forgive you, but to hold out until the mission is over. You need her in your Team.

>>Ask her not to forgive you, but to hold out until the mission is over. You need her in your Team.
Feels a bit weird to just send her home like she's being grounded. Would there be any repercussions if she left? I imagine as long as the mission is complete then everything thing is good.
>>
>>393262
>Urge her to leave the western front. You'll finish this mission with Chao and Heim, or alone!
She's starting to turn into a liability. If this is how she's going to react every time a mission doesn't go our way we're better off without her.
>>
>>393268
>Would there be any repercussions if she left?
There will be different repercussions for both options.

>Ask her not to forgive you, but to hold out until the mission is over. You need her in your Team.

You get up slightly, supporting yourself on your left arm as you wipe away the blood running from your nose with your right hand and arm. A trail of wet red color paints your leather gloves and your clothed arm. It’s washed away in the rain. You peer up at Mei who is making no attempt to help you up on your feet again. Fine. You pull yourself up from the wet and muddied grass, straightening your back in the face of a still hurt and pissed off team member. She has nothing more to say to you, but she doesn’t leave your sight or turn about to return to her stone. She’s waiting for you to say what she wants to hear. Unfortunately, you don’t know how to find those words.

“What do you want me to say?” You ask out straight. “Because if I knew what to say to make things right between us, I would, Mei. But whatever I say, I can’t bring Jin back.” You tell her, despite watching her close the distance between the two of you, taking another swing. Her fist connects with your jaw this time, but it’s not strong enough to send you to the ground. You stagger backwards.

“We all knew the risks when we joined the Blood Guardians. It could have been you or me.” Another silent swing filled with rage, another fist meeting your face, another meter that you’ve staggered backwards.

“I’m sorry.” You continue and she goes in for another sucker punch, but she hesitates at your next couple of words: “I failed you.” - She pauses her assault on you, searching your eyes with her own through the rain for something, anything. Her clenched fist is shaking violently - her wounded heart is telling her to beat you into a bloody mess, but something else within her is stopping her. Eventually she lowers her fist, the angered expression on her face slowly fading into obscurity, leaving her sad and depressed.

“We’re going to finish this mission. I need you until we’re done, Mei. After we get back, it’s up to you if you want to stay, change teams, or…” You drift off, both of you understanding that you’re talking about leaving the Guardians altogether. She nods quietly. It’s not unheard of, but it’s considered taboo in most parts of the Forest. You won’t become a social outcast because of it, but you’ll get the occasional dirty glances and some shit talking behind your back, but nothing else. As long as you don’t desert your active duty and don’t report in to your company Captains or to one of the three Leaders of the three branches, the consequences aren’t as dire as one might assume.

After a few moments you’re about to turn around and leave to regroup with Chao and Heim, but a voice alarms your mind and body to the outmost.

”Five of our kind is fast approaching, Lin! They have us surrounded. They’re too fast to outrun, even for you. Our only option is to fight.” - You throw a panicked look back at Mei. You’re not sure she could fight in her condition, but can you take on five masked humans on your own?! You bet she could run away. They’re only tracking you after all! She quickly catch on to your eyes. They’re darting from Mei to any given location around the forest, trying to find a hint of where they are.

“What is it?” She asks suspiciously.

>Order her to flee. Tell her to go get Chao and Heim. You’ll hold them off until she returns!
>Tell her to get ready to fight. 2 versus 5. This time, the odds are not in your favor.

No offense taken. Sometimes I can write updates between 20-30 minutes, which is normal over at /tg/, but I suppose I've grown more lax on /qst/ since the auto-permasage is 3 days away. I've found myself taking small breaks here and there in my writing to not get burned out. To be honest, sometimes I just get distracted when I'm looking up a word or something of the sort and suddenly 20 minutes have passed.

It's something I'll have to improve on as we go along.

>Order her to flee.

“You need to run!” You order her, throwing your head about to watch every corner of this clearing, looking for movements amidst the trees. Mei is about to ask something when it dawns on her what you and Rushi had spoken about at the meeting. They might have tracked you down. Pulling out her weapon, she shakes her head at you.

“No, run, Mei! Go fetch Chao and Heim. I’ll hold them off! I need you to do this for me!” You press onward, almost screaming at her. She hesitates for a few more seconds before she rush off towards the direction you both came from. You watch her leave with a building tension. The second she disappears into the forest, five new presences make themselves known in the clearing. One of them came out close to where Mei left. He must have seen her, but ignored the Awoo. They’ve either been sent to kill you alone or they have another motive for focusing solely on you. The white-haired devil is fortunately not among them, but it’s still you versus five of them. It’s not looking good.

“That’s the Guardian the Queen spoke of.” One of them remarks with a voice void of emotions, nodding at you and your odd appearance no doubt.

“Do you feel the presence within it?” Another gives voice to its white mask from which crimson eyes burn.

“We all do, brother. The Fire spoke true.” The only woman in the midst confirms it.

“It always does.” The fourth continues with an equal monotone voice. The fifth one remains silent as the group approach you from all directions. The second you pull out your Guardian Blade, they set their arms aflame and charge you all at once!

“Bring it on!”

If this were any other quest, I'd honestly wonder what might make Lin consider throwing her lot in with the humans. I'm vindictive like that, and I'm honestly just curious about the potential storyline. But that seems anathema to the QM. Kinda a shame.

While it might make for an interesting story, the quest is, at its core, Shounen. The further along we go, the more shounen it'll become. Now, I'm not comparing the quest to any of the big name Shounen pieces, but take Naruto for a good example: Even if he was treated as a monster by the entire village and was oppressed for it, he still remained loyal and stuck to his guts and ideals in the face of Akatsuki.

I could never see a shounen MC joining the side that has so far been displayed as the 'bad side' no matter how bad things get.

Your post caught my attention, but now I really need to sleep.
>>
>>394108
Shounen?

I'm gonna be honest, I feel like if that's what you're going for, you might be missing the mark. The tone of this whole story has set so far, I'm feeling more like it's Game of Thrones than anything else. Maybe a little bit of Berserk in there too. So sorry, but if that was your intention yeah.

Then I'm doing the right thing and we're heading in the right direction. I want the tone of the story to be dark and ruthless before things become more hopeful due to both training, the experience, and new powers obtained.
And remember, AoT is dark at times as well, and it's considered shounen.

Next Session at 17:00 CET! Might be able to get an update or two before then. Now I gotta run.

Hm...
I honestly don't know why I'm sticking around. I'm not trying to anger you. But so far this story is literally everything I avoid in my media. I hate Attack on Titan because it's too gruesome. I dislike Game of Thrones.

In general I dislike really really dark stuff. And I'll be vicious for the sake of clarity- I don't have faith in your writing ability to pull this stunt off. It's a very very difficult U-turn to make, and I'm wary of most who try.

And yet I keep clicking on the thread. I honest to god or whoever you worship have no clue why. Maybe I'm waiting for the trainwreck? Maybe something else? I dunno, because already I'm of the mindset that absolutely no matter what else happens unless you pull a mass resurrection stunt later on down the line, even winning the whole war would seem like a Pyrrhic victory.

For some unknowable, unfathomable reason on my end, I'm hooked, and I genuinely, without doubt, honestly hate that fact. No ifs ands or buts about it.

Congrats, I guess.

The light from the candles flicker softly in accordance to the dancing flames from the torches and the two voices echoing within the small chamber. The iron doors are shut close, but the presence of the knights standing at attention down two rows in the hallway outside is ever present in the back of Ishimura’s mind. They are loyal to no one but Hau Sing, their Lady. They’d kill fellow Humans if she ordered them to. Not that you can ever imagine her wanting to kill Humans, given her ideals.

“Are you listening?” Her frustrated voice brings the knight out from his thoughts, and back to reality.

“To your voice? Always.” He still finds ways to flirt with the Commander, despite her grumpy and reserved nature. She easily brushes it off since she knows he’s never serious about it, but her knights has definitely a problem with it. It’s blatantly obvious with the way Ser Hauffer treats him. Ishimura’s now focused eyes wander across the many parchments laid out over the table while Hua Sing speaks to him in the background. He’s not listening. His gaze eventually lands on the map covered by two books. He wouldn’t care if it wasn’t for the familiar marks on it that can only indicate one thing. He pulls it out from underneath the books, revealing that he wasn’t listening to begin with. He ignores the murderous glare across the table as best he can.

“So it’s true.” Ishimura murmurs to himself, throwing a glance up at Hau Sing whom he has caught the attention of. “More of the Queen’s soldiers are pouring into the west.” He taps the roof of his mouth with his tongue, absorbing the news. It was nothing but a baseless rumor until he laid his eyes upon this map where the routes and the number of masked men who are moving west are notched with ink. If nothing else, Hua Sing keeps an extremely tight check on any and all military movements on all fronts. She’s like the Lord-Commander in that regard. It’s also one of the reasons she found out about her brother’s untimely death so quickly after the Northern Campaign’s failure. From what he heard, she didn’t leave her room for a week and refused to eat for a while after that. He can’t picture the commander sitting before him as being so weak to her emotions and familial bonds. It warms his heart that there’s not just cold blooded bastards that rule humanity’s armies.

“I would advise you to not call her that in my presence, Ishimura.” She removed his title coldly. She’s angry at the mention of the Queen. Although she’s revered by countless humans, and with an entire militant and religious cult backing her, there’s still noble families and high ranking commanders that hate her for what she did 3 years ago. The blood that ran on that day will not so easily be forgotten, even if it opened up the pathway past the first magical wall.

>Continued
>>
>>395892

On the other hand, Ishimura couldn’t care less. He has only heard what happened. He wasn’t part of the campaign when the events unfolded. Although, Hua Sing was there and witnessed it first hand.

“So you hate her?” The question is loaded and if answered incorrectly to the wrong people it would mean certain public execution. Either by boiling oil, skinned alive, or having one’s limbs pulled apart by four strong horses with chains. Ishimura has seen it happen once. The man pleaded for mercy at first, but when his skin boiled and cracked and the smell of burned flesh filled the air, he screamed for a different kind of relief altogether. Memories like these don’t haunt him and they certainly don’t help him decide which way to lean on the political scene.

“I never said that.” She eyes him suspiciously. He can’t help but chuckle and reply to her suspicious glare with a smile.

“Relax, my Lady~. It’s not like I’ll report you to that cult of hers for ‘treason’. I’m in no hurry to watch your body get pulled apart by horses, or have my throat slit in my sleep by your ever so loyal knights.” He jests, watching Hua return to her parchments with a blank expression before throwing a careful look back at the closed iron doors. Still, there are good reasons why he doesn’t speak of the boiling punishment out loud.

“What of you, Ser Ishimura?” Hau eventually looks up again, training her eyes on the knight before her.

“What of me?”

“What is your opinion of her?”

Problem is with AoT and most shonen with a 'dark' world is that the go through characters like tissue paper. Which quickly jades their audience into not caring. After all why care for a character if they're just going to die a few episodes after they are introduced? Akame Ga Kill is an especially egregious example of this, trying to force you to care after they've killed of character 785. All it manages to do is come off as edgy and trying too hard.

Kun's death was thematically fitting because it was against a tough boss, Jin's death was puerile and senseless because our supposedly competent squad mates didn't check the corners in a known dangerous area and died in a trap a child could avoid. Which is stupid.

Still you're pretty much enforcing people who up til now have been portrayed as competent, as blithering idiots whenever plot fiat demands. Why do we even have a squad when you're going to arbitrarily enforce their incompetence whenever you want? There is literally no reason anyone using even a little bit of caution(which is why we chose Jin in the first place because he's not a hothead who'd throw caution to the wind and not check corners) could avoid with ease. As it stands we're better off going alone and never talking to anyone ever because you'll just kill them off for "muh shock value" in senseless and stupidly Ooc way.

>>395914
So you like it when the Qm turns our competent lieutenant into a foolhardy moron just to get a cheap shock value? You like it when he's pretty much said "I can and will kill people in quest whenever the fuck I feel like it and there is nothing you can do about."

You're assuming a whole lot, so I'll put this out there as food for thought: You don't know the exact circumstances surrounding Jin's death as of yet. Assuming that he ran around a corner without checking what's there is entirely out of character for him.

That I am breaking the portrayal of these characters to kill them for cheap shock value is a view/opinion that I will never share. Thank you for sharing yours nonetheless. You wouldn't do so if you didn't care, so I won't hold it against you at all.

>You remain neutral. [Truth]

“Who’s to say I have one?” Ishimura counters the question with one of his own.

“Everyone and anyone of importance or not holds some form of thought towards her. What is yours, or are you dodging the question because your views are opposite of my own?” The tension in the room grows thicker and even if it’s fun to rile the Lady up, this is starting to get a bit dangerously real for Ishimura.

“I hold as little of a regard for her as I do for all the different forms of mannerism.” The knight answers the question truthfully with a joke, much like his character. Hua takes his answer to heart, carefully scanning him for something he can only assume she won’t find in his facial expression. After a quiet moment, the commander sighs and rolls up the scroll she overlooking and closes the book she was reading at the same time.

“Time to confront this issue between the town’s people and your men, Ser Ishimura.” She states, rising to her feet and the fellow knight-commander joins her presently, a wild curiosity guiding the way.

____

A punch from the right. Parry. A kick from the left. Dodge. For a minute you’ve been dancing between the deadly Red Flower engulfed strikes and iron hard kicks coming from all directions as the five masked humans have you surrounded, working in perfect tandem to not let you make them overreach, escape to establish a new high ground, or strike a fatal blow back amidst their ranks. When you try to thrust or slash at any given moment when one shows their weakness, you’re warned by your lightning fast instincts of an incoming attack from another angle. The only way to successfully wound any of them is to trade one blow for another. Seeing as they don’t respond to pain, it won’t be a fair trade. You’ll be dead before you’ve slain them all if you trade one attack for another upon you.

From this minute alone you’ve discovered more about these masked humans than from all the previous fights with them together. They appear human, but they don’t act like one. They have no need for rest, an endless supply of stamina, and even when pressed, they show zero emotions or facial expressions. It’s what a human would certainly call ‘inhumane’ as they’ve deemed the creatures of the forest to be. These so-called ‘humans’ appear to be more like creatures under control than anything remotely sentient.

Another punch aimed at your temple is dodged with not a second to spare. Things are becoming more and more dangerous. The longer you stay in this position, the more sluggish your actions and movements will become. However, if you try to push your way out, failure will mean no second try. You must carefully weigh your options quickly if you are to survive this.

>Go offensive and press your way out of the formation at first chance.

You cannot stay in this cornered situation. You have no doubt you could endure their attacks until the rest of your team arrives to the scene, but at that point you might be too drained to help them. No, you need to press your way out, like a wounded animal cornered by a stone wall and a pair of hunters. You need to lash out, create your own opening and press on it, hard. If you stay where you are, it may spell your or any of your remaining team member’s undoing.

Another two strikes are parried and dodged respectively before your moment comes. When one of them goes in for yet another strike at the same time as another, you press your advantage away from the attacks and straight through the gap left behind for a second after you parried away an earlier punch. As you leap through the brief hole in their formation, you feel something extremely hot reaching out for your leg and tail, but you escape their grasp just short of failing and free yourself from your cornered imprisonment. The five masked humans show no frustration in their movements as they watch you back away and assuming another stance, ready for the second phase of this battle.

They continue their assault, charging at you once more!

The first one to reach you is met with a missed strike and a cut across his abdomen, sending his guts spilling out onto the ground. He falls to his knees and stop moving. There’s no painful scream or crying for help. He only sits there in silence, staring at his gaping wound and the pink entrails upon the forest floor. Just like the every single other masked human before him. The next two incoming enemies come at you from two wildly different directions. You could potentially dodge their attacks and continue the fight in a new position, or you can take another huge risk to see both of these wretched humans dead.

Don't over extend, we already took a risk, they are down to 4, hopefully Mei will be back with the others anytime soon now.

Atleast I hope she is, she might have lashed out at us, but she seemed to understand the severity of the situation when we ordered her to get out of there

>Dodge.

No point taking any unnecessary risks unless there’s a higher chance of success. All you need to do is hold out until your team arrives. It’ll be four versus four, a fair fight so to speak. However, despite dodging and your continued passive stance of parrying their attacks and avoiding another of their corner formations, they are becoming more and more ruthless and aggressive in their advances. They know you’ve sent for help and if they arrive before they can kill you, they won’t have the same advantage they have now. They aim to finish you off before then. Something you won’t allow.

As they begin their next wave of assault in pairs, you block the first two strikes with your blade, pushing their bodies apart and aside with both your sword and a kick to meet the incoming next pair. However, instead of following the same pattern, you dodge both of their punches with two quick sidesteps and with a vertical slash upward from the chest-level, you effectively remove the back half of the masked female human’s head. Her body slumps together like a boneless fish and it crashes to the ground, leaving a bloody mess as the remaining part of her brain leaves its protective bone shell.

As always, the three remaining enemies show no emotion or loss for their fallen companion behind their masks and crimson eyes as they continue to press on more fiercely. It’s not a question of whether or not they’ll kill you before you friends arrive anymore. Now it’s a struggle whether or not they’ll be able to kill you at all, given how you’ve eliminated two of them in the face of five. They need to become more aggressive, ruthless, and careless to strike you down once and for all. The next few minutes of this fight will be harder than you can imagine unless your team arrives soon.

After a short moment, you raise your Guardian blade right before all three of them charge you at once!

>Combat DC Reached

Instead of facing them head on, you immediately turn about and make a run for it. This isn’t fleeing nor is it strategic evasion. You have a plan, but it’s going to be risky. However, you’re certain you’ll succeed. It will press them to overextend to the point where they’re exposed. You’ll cut through their ranks in one swift attack.

”We cannot escape, Lin. Do not attempt to flee.” The Red Flower voices its concern within your mind - its voice echoing amidst your rapid thoughts.

“Shut up for a second.” You pay it no mind, ready to execute your simple, but hopefully effective plan. Your speeding rush takes you across the clearing and from behind you can hear the three attackers approaching with lightning speed - their flaming arms ready to grab onto whatever clothes or skin they can get a hold of in your apparent escape. Although they’re catching up to you, it’s already too late on their end.

Upon reaching the deformed stone where Mei beat her hand bloody, you leap onto the wet rock just as lightning strikes in the background and the hard rain pours down over all four of you. The masked humans watch in silence as your ascension and descent happens within the span of two seconds. You leaped into the rock and used your right leg to propel yourself straight back to the forest floor, into the midst of the humans. With the extra force behind your next leap, your Guardian blade easily cut through the muscles and flesh that made up a neck. One of the masked humans heads rolls off cleanly when its body goes down on both knees.

There’s three of you now in the pouring rain. You didn’t have a chance to notice it before, but white steam is constantly emanating from the human’s burning arms as the rain continues to hit them. You back away slightly to get a better position while the two last humans trade looks, as if they’re silently coming up with a plan or reaching a decision. You throw a glance at the scenery in your back for but a second, but there’s still no sight of Mei and the others.

Where are you? - You have confidence you can beat these two, but anything can happen and you refuse to underestimate your opponents like you did with the Grim Knight. You remain in your stance as you await their charge, but they’re standing still while watching your every move. Are they waiting for you to attack? You can’t outrun them even if you tried according to your Red Flower, so should you finish this or wait for them to make a move?

The question is answered by itself when their masks are set aflame and burn into ashes right in front of you. From their crimson eyes, you spot what could only be described as melting Red Flower running down out from their eye sockets and down onto their cheeks, melting their expressionless faces away. As this happens, they assault you for what might very well be the last time!

>Avoid them. They’re doing something new and dangerous.

>Avoid them. They’re doing something new and dangerous!

While nothing has been normal for you ever since you joined the Guardians, this is entirely out of the ordinary. It’s as though these two stepped out from the fiery jaws of the underworld itself, if such a place even exists. Their faces are melting as the liquid Red Flower tears its way out from their eye sockets and descending down their cheeks and in-between it, tearing skin, flesh and bone pieces along the way. Their noses and eyes are gone, and their lips are slowly fading away right before they charge you down. The dissolved pieces of their formerly human-looking faces jets and spurts about behind them as they launch themselves upon your path.

What strikes you the most isn’t their faces, but that they’ve lower their arms to increase their speed instead of keeping them up for their next flurry of strikes. It’s as if they’re prioritizing reaching you at all cost instead of fighting you at this point. They’re up to something dangerous and you can’t let them reach you!

The second you spot them moving in your direction in a rushed charge, you high tail away from them. They mustn't get close to you. If that’s their only goal, they must have ulterior motives aside from fighting. The clearing gives you enough space to dart about, avoiding their every advance. However, with their current speed compared to yours, they keep themselves constantly on your tail at every turn. They began to scream a few seconds ago and it’s the most horrible and nightmare-inducing sound you’ve ever heard. It’s the kind of scream that will haunt your dreams for years to come.

“By the Tree!” You hear Chao’s voice from the other side of the clearing, but you can’t turn your gaze around right now. It’ll only slow you down. Suddenly the formerly masked humans’ heads are engulfed in the same Red Flower surrounding their arms. As you jump onto the deformed rock and make a leap in a different direction, they crash into the rock and explode into a fiery rain of blood, flesh, shattered bones, rocks, and Red Flower.

The force of the connected explosion sends you reeling mid-air to the ground. You crash, roll, and get up on one knee as you and your team watch the red and burning scene before you upon which a thick cloud of smoke rises steadily. If this destruction is what the masked men are capable off, there will be hell to pay if the second barrier ever falls…
