“Some of you may have some inclination to believe that you’re going to become pilots.” Hick’s words are loud, yelled out towards the large mass of organized chaos, recruits not yet suited to settling into neat, orderly lines. This includes you, as you try to look as professional and at attention as you can manage. With a Quetzal hanging off of your frame, it’s easier said than done.

“Or perhaps you have some inkling of a suspicion that you can really make something of yourself if you apply yourselves and try hard. Well, I’m here to tell you that the lot I see in front of me will undoubtedly have washouts and rejects. Because the truth that up to this point, no one was willing to tell you?” Hicks cracked a small smile, but the mirth never reached his eyes. “In war, none of you are special.”

“Some of you will likely die in fact. Some of you will be maimed, disfigured, and some of you will walk out completely untouched. Because life isn’t fair, and if you haven’t learned that simple adage by the end of this training, I’ll be thoroughly amazed.” His deep, booming voice seemed to be having the desired effect, each enunciated word staying surprisingly clear of any slurring. Whatever burned his face didn’t burn his wit or tongue…

He’d begin to pace down the lines, inspecting the messy rows of recruits. “If you follow my words though, stick to your training, and protect the lives of the people fighting side by side with you? I can promise you that you’ll have a fighting chance of making it through this.”

“Not all of you will be pilots, or have to be. Not all of you will be suited for the positions. Cargo planes, fighters, bombers, and troop transports. We need mechanics, MP’s, staff personnel, and non-coms.” There’s grumbles from some of the people in the amassed crowd, but Hicks didn’t say anything. Rather, he tapped his foot on the ground twice, and the stark white creature that’d been following on his heels lazily stood to a firm attention, looking out at the mass of recruits.

Your eyes find Tucker, and he appears to be looking towards the obsidian horned creature as well. What’s going on with that thing…? “First off though, you’ll be going through basic training. Physical training to condition your weak, flabby bodies, as well as activities to foster more intense relationships between you, and your pokemon partners. During this you will be monitored, and after this your assignments will come in.”

This all sounds like a fairly well planned program, at least from what you’ve noticed. You might have had something to ask, had his gaze not focused on you, the redheaded girl, and the beefy man with the one eyed, blue object floating next to him. “Fortunately enough, some of your fellow cadets were inquisitive enough to open up their pokeballs ahead of schedule…” Once more attention was drawn to you, and the other two recruits. You might have asked how he singled you all out, but to be fair you’re all extremely conspicuous with your pokemon.

>Say nothing. Yep, not talking is the absolute best course of action right about now. Silence is a virtue, right?
>”Hey, we weren’t told not to bring them out. Besides, it’s not like anything bad happened…” Ignoring your close shave with getting your throat ripped out, obviously you did nothing wrong.

You mouth purses to a thin line as he looks to the three of you, hands held behind his back. "I don't really care what your intentions were when you opened your pokeballs, but I think you all need to realize exactly how dangerous these creatures are. These aren't your mother's pet meowths, or the docile miltanks. Think of it like this. Each and every one of you has in your possession, a gun with two two barrels."

"One of them is pointed towards you, and the other towards your target. Each time you pull the trigger without the proper training, you risk blowing your head clean off." His voice had dropped low, and the smile had disappeared from Hick's face entirely. "So the next time you decide to have the bright idea of ordering your pokemon, think about which barrel that bullet is going out of."

He'd let the words sink in for a moment, as the mass of recruits went mostly silent. Tense, pregnant pauses would pass before he decided to continue. "What we go through now, is the next step in the process. Each of you will be assigned a training unit, with whom you will be working with for the rest of your training. You will eat with them, bleed with them, sleep with these people, and hone your pokemon's abilities to a fine edge. I'll allow my aides to take it from here..."

Some of the staff on the side would begin to call off names, in what looked to be a pre-assigned order. Looks like these were the squads, though you end up being assigned...

>With Tucker. You're fairly sure he's a friend, so that's good, right?

It takes a little bit of work till everyone is sorted out into their respective groups, but luckily you were put together with Tucker, so the squad isn't entirely alien to you. There's you, Tuck, two other girls, and two other boys total, but you don't exactly have much time to get to know them right off the bat, seeing as your instructor is coming.

He's got probably the most finely tuned mustache you've ever seen in your life. And you lived with men who'd shaved but a small handful of times in their personal lives. As he arrived, he looked around at everyone for a moment, before speaking. His accent was strange, only made stranger as he fiddled with his mustache.

"Zis is ze' verkin' group ah' am to be with?" His gaze was dubious as he reached into a pouch on his side, before pulling out a pipe. "Challenge accepted." He didn't look like he had much faith in your band, but didn't bat an eye at the lizard around you. It seems highly guarded at this point, looking too and fro at the people around you, and hissing at anyone that got too close for it's liking.

"Anyvay, shall ve move on? Evyone' open up your pokeballs, yah'?" It's hard to follow what he's saying, but anyway everyone seems to be trying to pull out their pokemon. You're ahead of the curve though!

The task of opening your own pokeball was complicated enough, seeing as you were only dealing with yourself. The attempt of trying to do so with at least five other people? Much trickier than doing so with just the one. However you manage to get most of them open in a prompt time, much to the thanks of your squadmates. Tucker's Rufflet would pop out in an almost lazy flash compared to your dratini's, wings outstretched and flapping slowly, beak open in what appeared to be a yawn.

The first girl was short, with matching brown hair cut into what appeared to be a bob of some sort or another. Her own matching companion was a small, rock-like object... Honestly if it wasn't for the arms coming out from it, and furiously waving around, you'd think it was just a big stone. She's looking at it curiously, and bemused.

The other girl has what appeared to be a small spearow, and this is one bird you'd recognize anywhere. She's got longer, black hair, but the bird in her hands seems to be drawing most of her attention, mostly because it's very intent on pecking her. Spearows travel in packs, and were known to be pests of crops worldwide, along with having a terrible temperament. You heart goes out to her.

The first of the boys is average height, but of slimmer build over all, and generally has a more boyish look to him. His arms though, were straining against the pink creature in them. A long tail tipped with white, along with a white, wide muzzle as it lazed about in his arms. It's....well, it's not biting him... That's good, right?

And the last recruit is of similar height to yourself, but of a more severe disposition. His face is worn with lines already, skin rougher than your own. Must have had a hard life, and it doesn't seem to get much easier. He was contending with what appeared to be... Well, it came up to his waist, and looked similar to pictures of Fearows you'd seen, but it was metallic all over. Like it's feathers were made of metal...

Your instructor glances about at the pokemon you're all dealing with in various ways, taking a moment to light his pipe before continuing. "I zee you've all zound ze way to open vour ballls. Now ve begin ze introductions, yah'? I am Zachary Von Stronheim, native of Sinnoh, and currently non-practicing professor of pokemon. Next vin line?"

That's why his accent was weird! Sinnoh was a neighboring country, but had distance put between the warring states by Hoenn. Free from the strife, they'd mostly been advancing their own studies into the ruins that were scattered about their country, at least from what you heard. You couldn't imagine why he'd leave that all behind to come here.

"I'm Teresa Jacques, from...off the mainland." That was an odd way to phrase it, but you mostly chock it up to having to wrangle the limbs stone in her arms. It's making these choked noises too. Real uncomfortable.

"Priscilla Harding. Goldenrod city, which I have to say would make a far better training base than some backwoods Viridian camp..." She huffs, holding both of her hands around the squawking, obnoxious bird. Almost looked like she was thinking about squeezing it.

"Shit, this thing is heavy! O-Oh, sorry! Call me Joey Johnson. Or J.J. for short. Occasionally JoJo, but don't wear that one out." The creature in his arms is apparently quite fat, and gives a yawn as it's apparently...falling asleep? This thing is weird.

The metallic bird is standing stock still, and you're not sure if you've seen it breathe. It's honestly a little disconcerting, yet the boy it's been assigned to doesn't seem to mind as it pocked at his side, poking at the bag on his back. It's actually pretty darn silent overall. "Bill. That's good, right? Just call me Bill." Not very explanatory, but it'll have to do for the moment.

"Ah, not zhat ze' introductions are vout of ze vay, ve can move onzoo ze' next part! Your dorms, yah'? Follow mah'." He'd turn on his heel, heading towards some of the buildings in the distance. However, something puts you off. There's a pokeball on his side, yet he doesn't have it out. At least that you can see. Strange.

Either way, the group would follow him onwards towards the dorms, along with the other training squads that had apparently opened their own pokeballs. A few people here and there looked cut and bruised, but alright for the most part.

As you're moving inside of the building, Quetzal clings closer to you, coiling to the shoulder and a little around the chest. Doesn't seem inclined to let go, and at the end of the day you simply give up on the matter. You're definitely in no mood to start wrestling with an angry dragon again, not when you're trying to move into a dorm.

"Fine, but don't do anything...weird, while you're there." Is it strange that you're getting used to the feeling of smooth scales? Probably a bit unusual, but you're not going to put your mind on it. The little talk though, gains the attention of one of your squadmates.

"Are you letting it bully you? Poor form, especially if you want it to learn any control..." Priscilla talks in carefully enunciated words, her hands calmly holding the Spearow. At the very least though, it's starting to loose most of it's fight from the situation. She's wearing it down just by a battle of attrition, and using her might against it.

>"I think I'm treating it with respect and dignity. It's a partner, right?"

"I think I'm treating it with respect and dignity. It's a partner, right?" You gave her a shrug, before inclining your head towards the Spearow in her grasp. "Besides, I already had to wrestle Quetzal once already when I took it out of the ball. It's not bullying me, it's just spooked. Small spaces get it worked up."

She gives you a sidelong glance, though it's less admonishing in nature than before. "Hm. Not an entirely bad way of looking at it I suppose. I tend to prefer a more firm hand, but different strokes..." She'd trail off, while her companion seemed to have lost most of the fight in her hands. An interesting way of going about training her pokemon, but you couldn't judge if you wanted.

For the moment though, you'll just fall in line with everyone else...

The dormitories were simple, one story buildings that were laid out in relatively identical ways. Long walkways, with bunkbeds laid out on both sides. The one thing that really strikes your attention though, is the bedding situations. You assumed you'd all be split by gender, but more or less for modesty's sake. It's nothing you'd ever really thought about before, but you're fairly sure this wouldn't have flown back home. They're a tad old fashioned back there....

Either way, your attention is brought back to the other groups of the cadets filtering behind you, and few that made it in before you. Their own instructors seem to be talking to them, and Zachary was quickly coming your way.

"Oh, zis is ze last thing for today..." He swept a hand towards the bunks, which were recruits were starting to rush towards. "Prevent zour pokemon partners from runnin' oof, and the bunks ah' first come, first sah've." It takes a moment for that to sink into all of you, but when it does, Bill is the first one to get moving. You and everyone else quickly follow suit after him.

It's really just chaos as everyone around you tries to find a suitable bunk, or at the very least not get stuck with the creaking, older mattresses. Who do you try to bunk with?

You could always play it safe, and head straight for Tucker, seeing as you know him the best. At the very least you get along amiably, and wouldn't have to worry about any hostilities sparking up, at least based off the observations that you'd made. However, he seems to be chatting up Jojo something fierce. From what you can hear, they're lightly debating something about the Rapidash racing leagues... Well, looks like you're going to be passing on that front.

Priscilla and Teresa gravitate towards one another right off the bat, and you couldn't exactly blame them. They're the only two girls in the squad, and relatively outnumbered by the rest of the boys. "See, you're allowing this terra-form to get the better of you. You have to enforce dominance on it."

"I'm not exactly cutting a scary picture here, Priscilla..."

The Goldenrod native scoffed, arms crossing over her chest and inadvertantly squeezing the Spearow just a little too tight. "My father enforced the rules at our kennel very early on. Made it clear to the pups who's boss..." The conversation tapers off as the two of them trailed away away from you, though you're a little curious what her father raised. You'll have to remember to ask her about it sometime.

Bill for all intents and purposes, has disappeared from your sight, blending into the mixed mass of recruits. Doesn't seem like he was very interested in socializing with any of you, but you're not planning on holding it against him. After all, you're still virtually strangers here.

As the bunks begin to run low though, you feel yourself begin to panic a little, before rushing forward yourself. Quetzal makes a little hiss at the sudden movement, but loosens his coil around you somewhat, allowing a greater freedom for you to move unhindered. You're actually lucky enough to find a bunk that doesn't seem to have any inhabitants yet, so already you've chosen the bottom bunk, setting down your sparse belongings onto the ground.

Immediately though, you feel rapid tapping on your shoulder. A couple inches to the right, and it would have been your dratini companion being touched. Likely someone would have lost a couple of fingers in the ensuing incident. Turning around, you see the familiar redhead from before standing behind you, the Murkow she must have been partnered with preening itself on her shoulder.

They were regarded as less common pests than Spearows, but far craftier when it came to poaching crops. Most of the time scarecrows plain didn't work on the bastards...

"Is it fine if I bunk with you? If you don't have anyone else coming that is." She's bearing a big, wide smile on her face, head tilted a little to the side.

>"Yeah, I think I'll have to pass." She's weird, and far too happy. Those are red flags.

"Uh...sure. You fine with taking the top? Kinda claimed the bottom already...." You speak, but she completely waives over your concerns. If that bird on her shoulder could look even more disinterested in what was going on around it, you'd be surprised. To be fair though, from what you'd heard it took a lot to spook Murkrows.

Quetzal is handling the noises and tight spaces decidedly less well, but he's not having a full on panic attack yet. You're still trying to figure out if he'll fit in the bed with you, since getting him back into the pokeball sounded easier said than done. Mostly since it was doubtful he'd go back in without struggle, and because you had no idea how to operate the pokeball.

"It's fine, trust me. The worst thing that happens is what, I roll off in the middle of the night?" She rolled her eyes at the thought, a hand settling on her hip idly, while the other pushed back her hair. "Anyway, nice to meetcha'. My name is Minerva, but you can just call me Minnie for something less formal." Her peppy attitude was out of place, seeing as while everyone around was a bit...well, nervous, there wasn't anything like that in her demeanor.

Even if her attention was on you, you'd note that her eyes kept flicking down to the little creature at your chest and neck. A hand was tapping away at the side of her leg, but you could generally get the gist that she was a little interested in the scaly monster that clung to you. "Saddled with a Dratini, huh? Y'know some towns in Johto apparently consider them sacred? Like a guardian animal... First time I've ever seen a living one to be honest."

Wait, a living one? "Do you have a lot of experience with Dratini's...?"

"Oh, no. At least not the breathing ones. My parents are a pokemon professors, but they'd always bring back the coolest specimens to dissect." She sighed wistfully, leaning against the bunk somewhat. "We never got too many live Dragon specimens. Far too difficult to contain through traditional means, and juveniles are either typically very good at hiding themselves, or still under the protection of their parents..."

As it stands, pokemon professors were only really established in the last fifty years. There was so much mysticism and superstition that surrounded the wild beasts, no one really knew what was really true, and what just happened to be a myth.

>"Do you have a lot of experience with pokemon...?" If her parents were professors, you' assume she'd at least have some interesting stories to tell.
>"Quetzal isn't really one for being touched. At least by other people. Can probably understand why your lab never hadn't any live ones..." The dragon doesn't seem in the mood for people, and it's not a bright idea to provoke him too much in one day.
>"Want me to see if I can calm him down? Might give you a chance to look him over and keep all of your fingers intact." What's the worst that could happen?

Ask if us wrestling him made us seem like a parental figure to Quetzal.

Maybe tomorrow. Give the dragon some time to settle in.

Voting this and should maybe let her know he's not the touchy feely type

But say tomorrow. After all, we don't know Quetzal's gender do we?

"Do you happen to have a lot of experience dealing with pokemon?" It's the most pertinent question that you could possibly ask, seeing if her knowledge could live up to her actual hands on training with them. Dealing with a corpse was one thing, but dealing with something living was a whole other deal.

"My parents never let me deal with the adults, at least before we had a set of pokeballs to use in their research. Most of the time they'd let me play with the smaller ones, like the Lillipups, and Snubulls. Occasionally some of the trained Houndours, if they weren't too aggressive." Makes sense. Studying pokemon could be incredibly dangerous, given the breeds that roamed the world. Involving a child would be very dangerous.

"Mostly I just read books, looked over the autopsy reports, watched the larger specimens through the enclosure windows..." She was setting down her own bag of materials, looking over the bedding that'd been provided on the mattresses. "Imagine my surprise when I got my desire with hands on work fulfilled in the Air force."

She's still eyeing Quetzal up something fierce, but as she's about to say something, you have to cut her off right there. "I'm sorry, but Quetzal isn't really one for touching. Maybe tomorrow though, when he's less on edge?" Her expression drops a little, but the smile was still there. Tomorrow was better than never, right?

"Sorry, I just... Well, we don't know very much about Dratini's. We've seen glimpses of their full grown size, but no one's ever been able to capture one for study. Most of them tend to die in captivity. Usually hurting themselves trying to escape." That actually draws your concern.

"What about the others? The ones that don't die?"

"Johtoan dragon masters usually have them tamed, or so I've heard. But those are usually just stories. You'd have to do something really stupid, like... I dunno, wrestle them." Yeah, something stupid... That decision to wrangle Quetzal was extremely spur of the moment and ill advised, but paid off in the end. You're not sure what that might entail in the future though, so you're looking forward to trying to find out.

"So if someone did wrestle one... Would they become submissive to them?" You try to ask the question as coolly as possible, starting to unpack a few of your things in the process. She's doing likewise, like many of the recruits around you.

"Dragon types usually operate under a basis of strength, at least from what most studies have shown. The biggest subject usually is leader of a given group, with the most territory and mating rights. They'd probably just consider you a bigger dragon, until they thought they could challenge you for the title of Alpha."

...Wait, what? The idea of a larger Quetzal coming after you in an attempt to establish dominance doesn't exactly make you feel very good...

Hopefully it'll be awhile before he feels like challenging you for control, or at least he'll view you as more of a friend than a true master. You're not exactly savoring the proposition a grudge match with a pissed off serpent. "Of course we don't know enough about Dratini and their growth line to know for sure. For all I know, it could just think you as a mother." Her words assuage your worries, but don't really make you feel all that better.

>"So did you join, or did you get conscripted?" That's not really a personal question, is it? Doesn't feel personal.
>"Are you planning on following in your parent's footsteps after the war? Y'know, bravely going where no one has gone before, finding exotic pokemon, catching them...?" A life of adventure, really.
>"Excited for training? Got your eye on a certain position if you can snag it?" Everyone probably had some idea of what they wanted, but that didn't mean that they'd get the position.

"Excited for training?" You ask, Minerva clambering onto the top bunk so she could take a seat. The Murkrow hopped off her shoulder as she made the movement, fluttering to the side of her bed and making a signature caw of annoyance. You think? They just cawed for no reasons sometimes, at least the times you'd noticed.

"I was hoping to get put into the medics corp, at least if my experience with pokemon and anatomy qualifies me for it. Believe it or not, but I've kinda got a...thing, against heights."

That...is really bad luck. Being afraid of heights, yet being put into the Air Force? It seems like the start of a goofy novel. "Huh. I guess I can't exactly blame you. Not everyone is really meant for it flying. The idea of it turned my mom in a nervous wreck..."

She laughed at the thought, looking down at you from the top bunk, legs kicking forward and back somewhat. "Know what you assigned as?"

"Like, after training is done...?" You hadn't given it much thought until now, but you definitely know that you want to be a...

>Pilot. Flying through the skies sounds absolutely amazing, even if it gives your mother a heart attack.
>Ground Personnel. There's plenty of people that are needed on the ground, even if it's not nearly as exciting.

Is Dragonite known in this world?

Yes, but more so in Johto. They're big, mostly fish-eating predators.
>>

Would our Dratini be with us in the cockpit?
>>
>>388220
So I take it it's semi aquatic as well as being able to fly?
>>
>>388260
There's spot for the pilot, and two human occupants. So yes, Quetzal could fit into the cockpit, but eventually he'll get too big. By that point though, he could just....fly on his own. And if you were crazy enough, you could ride him.
>>
>>388271
Do the pokemon evolve like the show and games? Or is it a gradual deal?
>>
>>
>>388308
More of a gradual deal. Growing over time, then spontaneous evolution.
>>
>>388326
Coolio

Would Noibat have acted the same way as a traditional dragon type? Might makes right etc
>>
>>388351
Less aggressive. Not as angry as Dratini.

The thread is now archived, so shoot them votes on suptg if you would.

So is quetzal locked in generic, or is there a chance if it evolving into one of the variations?
