“Sorry, I missed your heart.”

Lucky pops a small canister out of the gun and replaces it with another, one that’s glowing white. The Frost Witch lies next to you face down.

Breathing slowly, you ask, “…Why?”

She replies without even looking at you, “I’m a bounty hunter on the side. It’s good money.” Grabbing the harpoon, she loads it back into the gun. “Thought you were good bait for the Kraken, but it turns out you were just good bait in general! Guess that’s why they call me Lucky.”

As she strolls over to you smiling, you shake your head. “I’m fine, I’m fine. You don’t have to do this.”

“I coated it with baneweed. Sorry to say it, but you’re a goner,” Lucky says as she hovers over you. “Thanks for the assist.”

“No really, I feel great-“

You hear a sudden release of air followed by a sickening thwack, and you black out.

As if you just had a great nap, you open your eyes feeling refreshed. You see a blue lit ceiling pacing by, and you feel your body being dragged over a cold, rocky floor. Turning your head, you squint to see the glowing creatures from before.

The air is pungent with decay and iron. On your chest, stitches hold your wound tightly closed.

One of the creatures notices that you’re awake, but turns its head back forward. It hums a little note, and the others hum in return. A small tune fills the cave.

You let them carry to you where ever, delving deeper and deeper into the twisting tunnels. Eventually they stop and set you down on the ground. They take a step back, and you get up and turn around. The cave opens up into a cavernous room, dripping with glowing blue slime. In the center is a pair of sunglasses lying on the floor.

A booming voice ripples through the walls, reaching you in every direction. “I knew it! I knew something smelled fishy. Less fishy now though, more like the undead, good gods!”

Underneath the sunglasses, the slime bubbles and rumbles, rising to a spiraling explosion of goo that falls into a human shape. Donning a crown of goo with an antenna in the middle, the man tilts his sunglasses and smirks at you.

“Yup, I was right. So tell me, were you the one that slayed the mythos up top?”

“No, I wasn’t,” you respond curtly.

“But you helped, no? You’re doused in her magic.”

You don’t reply to it, which he considers to be an answer in itself. “Who are you?”

He slides his sunglasses back and gives you a toothy grin. “I have no real name. After all, you’re the first one to see me in eons!” Crossing his arms, he goes on, “You can call me whatever you want, but I didn’t bring you here so we can have a nice cup of mud. I want you to help me, and I can help you in return.”

Behind you, the creatures from before had already left. You say, “Help me? With what?”

“With what? You think you can take on the world alone?”

“What?”

“Boy, you are baffling blind. A mythos just died, and someone casted a global range spell right where she got killed. It’s like an arrow was fired, flew halfway across the world, and hit a King in the forehead. People are going to come looking, and then they’re going to find that the King died before the arrow hit.” Walking toward you, he goes on, “Then, they’re going to find you, and what do you think is going to happen when they find an undead?”

“They’re… going to kill me?” you conclude.

“Ha! You wish.”

Looks like it’s a good time to get some answers.

“I’ve got some questions.”

“Of course you do, but don’t go on for too long.”

“You mentioned a global range spell? What happened?”

“Every kid taking their first baby magic steps tries to see how far they can launch a spell.” Crouching down, he examines at your chest. “Seeing one this precise and powerful is something else. That stitch on your chest, I got same feeling after the mythos died.”

“It brought me back to life?”

He turns around, thinking. “Who knows?”

“…I’ve got another question. There was a girl with me when the Frost Witch died. Where did she go?”

“Last answer. Her? I felt the girl going into the Salt Sea, probably heading toward Luxia. She’s got the scent on the mythos on her too, coated it in. Speaking of Luxia, here’s what you can do for me!” A pillar of slime rises in front of him, which he reaches inside and pulls out a necklace. “Drip this in the center of every large body of water you can find. The bigger it is, the more I can help you. Luxia, for reference, is in the center of the Salt Sea.”

Unsure, you ask, “What does it do?”

Smiling, he replies as he puts it in your hand, “It lets me see and help you more. I’ve been trapped here for a very long time. Help a guy out, ehn?”

The gemstone in the middle shines with a brilliant blue, giving off a powerful aura. He doesn’t look like he’s about to explain what it does.

As you put in your pocket, you feel your coin bag missing but the coins still there. Lucky’s, anyway. Guess she took it back. 2 silver remain on you.

“Hey… I really need a name to call you, but where are my things?”

“Oh that.” A low hum ripples through the walls of the caves, reaching far and wide and echoing on. “For a name, I guess Mire Lord would do. No wait, the Lord of Mire sounds better. Yeah, go with that.”

The way the name was sounds familiar. “You’re a… mythos?”

“No way. How am I a living legend if no one knows I exist?”

From behind, you hear something. You turn around and see one of the slime creatures carrying your bag and sword above its head.

“Everyone knows to respect the dead, and it looks like your friend knows that too.”

You say nothing as you search your bag. In it are rope, a box of matches, and bandages, just like before.

With that concern out of the way, you ask him, “How do I get out?”

The Lord of Mire replies, “Since it looks like you want to go to Luxia, you’d want to head to a nearby town above ground. They have some boats lying around. Getting there, well, you can go underground or above. Vermin crawl in the tunnels, and wild beasts litter the jungle up there. Take your pick.”

“I’ll take the underground tunnels. Do you have a torch or a lantern I can use?”

The Lord of Mire blinks at you, “Me and fire, we don’t have a great relationship.”

Putting his hands together, he opens then to reveal a small glowing ball, similar to those at the end of the creature’s antennas. He hands it to you and you receive it and warns you that it won’t last long.

Sending you off with one of the creatures, you walk through countless twists and turns. Eventually it stops, motioning that it can’t go any further. Soon you come across a split path. You raise the orb, lighting the different roads ahead.

The one on the right has cobwebs dangling. From the left, you can hear the small sounds of barefoot walking accompanied by whispering.

“They never come so far.”

“What should we do?”

“Get your weapons ready!”

You walk into the left, bringing the orb ahead so you can see better. The soft glow of fire can be seen from afar. As you turn a corner, you are greeted by an arrow. It digs into your shoulder, stinging you.

“Oh no! Oh no! Why did you do that?”

Looking ahead, you see a group of… people hunching over. Long antennas rise from their heads, their tails wrapping around bows primed to fire. You wish there were more eye-candy underground.

“I got scared! What do you want? I can’t help it.”

“We’re dead! You didn’t hit a beast. You hit Death!”

“Good job, idiot. From maybe dead, to surely dead.”

You call out, aching, “Hey. I’m friendly, don’t worry.”

Murmurs arise. “Baneweed. Rot. Blood. Just like the oracle said!”

“Death. It’s definitely Death.”

“Oh no, oh no!”

You raise your voice, asking, “Oracle? What did they say?”

“Gave warnings of your passing!”

“Whispers from the walls. It moans.”

“Leave us alone! Go away!”

“The Oracle sent me here to help you,” you lie, “Put the bows down.”

They look at each other in disbelief, lowering their weapons after a moment. Whispering to each other, you can see that they’re considering what you’re saying.

“Help us? Why?”

“He is too suspicious.”

“Look at what he’s holding.”

All at once, they glance over at the glowing orb you’re holding. Its glow is dying by the second.

“An ally or enemy of the beasts?”

“Can’t get it without killing them. Enemy, clearly.”

“Maybe he is telling the truth.”

Turning to you, one of them addresses you, “We are deeply sorry. Come with us. Meet our leader.”

Painfully, you pull the arrowhead out of your shoulder and flex it. There’s a dull ache now, but you can live with it. Walking over, you follow them as they lead you further in where everything opens up and drops down deep below. Small spaces for walking line the walls as it spirals downward, ending at sharp points. Segments are connected by large stretches of wooden rope bridges. Openings pop up here and there, always lit by torches. In the center at the bottom is a huge pool of muddy water.

They take you into a well-lit tunnel. As you go inside, you see an ancient creature, similar to ones that fill this place. One of them scramble over to whisper something.

A scratchy voice leaks out from it. “Greetings. Welcome to Springs. It’s great you are here. I’m Svvsde.”

“Hello…” you consider pronouncing it but you don’t try. “I’m… Lucky, here to help you.”

“My pleasure. Yes, I’ve heard. We have tamed many crawlers. Lately, they are unruly.”

“Crawlers?”

“Large furry animals. Venomous, but easy to control. Something has got them in a frenzy.”

“And you want me to investigate.”

“That would be very appreciated.”

Nodding, you accept, “Okay, take me to where they are.”

“Good luck. I know you aren’t here for it. But, your reward will be waiting.”

He sends you off and you exit the passageway with one of them, presumably your tour guide. The gemstone necklace rumbles in your pocket.

You stop for a moment and ask, “Can I take a detour down to the water? I think I saw something.”

Down the walls and all around, everyone stares daggers at you. Silence fills the air until you break it.

“Never mind, let’s go.”

“Are you who you say you are?”

“Of course,” you reply.

As you walk, two more of them line up behind, bows ready.

Soon, you come into a tunnel with large holes in the walls. Metal bars separate you from the inside, and when you stare closely, you make out a humongous spider gazing back. Its wearing a leash.

Someone opens the cage, and you step back in anticipation. Slowly, the spider skitters to you and eyes you all over. Getting twitchy, the crawler aggressively leans in onto you. You freeze with goosebumps all over. After what seems like forever, it backs off.

“Get on. Down there is the nest."

Jumping on the spider, you grab its leash to stabilize yourself. You sit on its hard shell, thankful that it doesn’t have hard bristles everywhere. Giving the tailed beasts a little wave, you ride off. Maybe you should just go straight to the surface.

Torches line the wall with a flame that never seems to die, directing you straight forward. Soon, the pathway opens up as a narrow bridge of stone, lifting you above the large pit below. It’s filled with humongous batches of burnt eggs and bones lying nearby.

Ahead, you hear skittering. A frenzied crawler creeps in, twitching in front of you and ready to charge.

You tug at the leash and send it charging forward, the crawler responding instantly. As it steps forward, the other one moves back. The feints and skittering make your heart jump with every second, your right hand gripping your sword in anticipation. Then, the oversized beasts slam into each other, their fangs lunging for the body of the other. In the midst of the kicking and scrambling, you thrust the steel into an eye of the frenzied spider and follow it with a quick twist. It spasms, and its legs curl up with each twitch. Pulling your sword out, you pull at the leash again, sending your mount over the body and past it.

Past the bridge, the path diverts into two. You take a second to check where they lead. One rises, while the other turns and leads to the pit below: a dead end. Lit torches no longer line the walls, but the light is replaced by the fire from a different source. Two spiders in a wild frenzy erupt from the rising path, hissing as flames engulf them. You rear your crawler out of the way and watch as they scramble over the bridge and toward the tailed creatures.

Investigating the source, you ride onward until the passage widens into a cavern. Pillars of stone form as stalagmites meet stalactites, wrapped with web and eggs. An opening, the only one, is on the other side. Crawlers hiss and scatter as fire appears out of thin air. A silhouette stands in the middle, holding a pendant up.

“Sister, there’re too many pests down here. You were better fit for this.”

From the pendant comes a voice. “You seem just fine to me, Kae. Stop whining.”

Testing waters, you toss out a hi to the man. He turns around as you get closer and glares at you, and then he talks back to the pendant.

“Come down here, now.

“What? Why?”

“You need to see this.”

Letting go of the piece, he raises his hand toward you. Fire erupts from below, sending your crawler into a wild fever. It turns and kicks, dropping you onto the ground as it runs away hissing. You push yourself off the floor, and your eyes meet with his again.

He says to you, “You can talk.”

“Of course I can. What’s wrong?”

In an instant, he pulls out a knife from his sash: a motion that you register only after it’s finished. He walks toward you in a slow, precise pace, his blade pointed in your direction.

You raise your sword, and he moves in. His moves are slow, too slow, telegraphing each slash, cut, and swing for you to see. You try to meet his blows, but your swordplay falls behind. All his blows are perceptible, yet you can’t control your sword and your body the way you want it to. You have, you can say with absolute certainty, no talent for swordplay.

Giving you no time for counter attacks, he picks up the pace, the timing between strikes shortening and the telegraphs disappearing. As you try to stop the attacks, his knife draws blood as nicks and notches fall on your body. In a flash, he thrusts it straight for your neck. You block it out of sheer luck by deflecting it.

His hand flies away from him and with his other hand he draws another blade. This one you can’t stop. The steel sinks through your arm, unnaturally cutting clean through like it was butter. You watch as your hand separates from your body, and your eyes open as you realize you can still flex your hand. Suddenly, black ribbons fly out of the wound on both sides, meeting each other. You look ahead, seeing the man wide open and stunned at the sight.

You stop mid swing, your sword inches away from his neck. Panting, you gradually lift it away.

“Why don’t we start with introductions?” you say.

He takes a step back, chuckling. “Kae, Scout of the Luxian Order.”

“Lucky, someone trying to get to town.”

You offer your hand for him to shake, but he doesn’t move.

“Thank you for teaching me not to play around.” He steps toward you. ”But perhaps your necromancer should’ve brought back someone more carnivorous.”

As he gets closer, you start backing up. “Hey, there’s no need to fight.”

“The Order will need to see you, abomination.”

He flashes in front you, and you feel the hilt of his knife on your head.

When you awake, you are in a metal cage. You faintly hear the sound of waves around you as you look through the bars. A lone lantern hangs, lighting the wooden room you’re in. After that freaky show of magic you just witnessed, you attempt to knock over the lantern somehow. You reach outward, but nothing happens. Giving it a good tug, you find that where your arm had split now has fresh, new stitches, matching all the other ones that cover your body. Your hand stays firmly in place, not budging at all.

You instantly see that the cage isn’t bolted to the ground. When you step on the wood floor and try to push it, cage comes to a halt as you meet unexpected resistance. Searching around, you find that the back end has been hooked up to a steel chain which you follow with your eyes. It ends at a bent nail in a wooden beam. You give it a tug, and another, and the wood splits, releasing the nail.

The nail drags on the floor as you pull it toward you. Just as this happens, you hear the creaking of wood from behind. You turn around and see an opening on the ceiling with a ladder lowered. A man in a faded rags and rain boots climbs down. Keys can be heard dangling.

You lower yourself as quickly and as quietly as possibly, lying on the ground still. Your eyes shut as you pretend to be dead. With your ears, you pick up the footsteps of his boots as they approach you. Slowing your breath, you try to not move an inch.

His body blocks out the light of the lantern, you tell from the light that bleeds through your eyelids. You listen to him shuffling, and then a gruff voice comes from an uncomfortable close distance.

“What the fuck is he talking about? An undead? This is just a corpse.”

Abruptly, he shuffles again and kicks the cage. You almost jump out of your skin.

“Can’t wait for you to get up and hop out. Fucking royal, probably breathed in cave fumes.”

A second passes, and you hear him walking off and away. When the sound of a door shutting reaches you, you get up. Pushing the cage, you make your way around. You soon find your stuff in a toppled barrel. Next to it is another one, but of metal. Opening it, you find that it is filled with pickled fruit and brine.

>Use the necklace from the Lord of Mire.
>Smash the cage lock.

You take the necklace out and hold it over barrel. You’re not sure how this works, and you wished that he gave you some instructions. Lowering the blue gemstone, you try dipping it in. When nothing happens, you try to lower it even further. The stunning blue glow lights up the entire barrel.

Lifting it back out, you try holding onto the gemstone. You give it a good squeeze and feel the stone going into the metal casing, releasing slime. It flows for a few seconds until it stops. The barrel starts rumbling, and you back off to see a figure rising out. There the Lord of Mire takes shape, pickled fruits floating inside him as if he was a lava lamp. He looks smaller than you remembered.

“Took you long enough, I was starting to get impatient. You know, I was really hoping for you to put me in the pool of those filthy rats. There would have been a nice, refreshing cleaning up.”

“What did the necklace just do?” you ask, “and mind helping me out?”

“I don’t feel like giving you a lesson on magic right now boy, so go ask someone else about magic wells.” A shape of a hand goes to the lock on the cage, and a small click can be heard. “There you go. This is uh, really small pool of water, I can’t do much.”

As you climb out, you question, “How much can you do?”

He replies, audibly thinking, “I can’t make any mirebeasts and I can’t leave this barrel, but I can sure as gods blow holes in this ship.”

>”That’ll be great. Just destroy as much as you can.”
>”Just a small hole will do. Enough for me to slip through.”
>”No thanks. That’ll be all the help I need.”

No need for excessive property damage.

About three or four large holes, and one small hole for me. They'll be distracted enough with the big ones, they'd might forget about me until it's too late.

“Just a small hole will do. Enough for me to slip through unnoticed.”

“You’re not planning on swimming, are you?”

“Probably will.”

He reaches out and touches you. A thin layer of slime envelopes your body and disappears in an instant.

“Here, my blessing. Don’t die on me.”

The Lord of Mire climbs higher out of the barrel and extends an arm. Pieces of fruit float toward the hand, crushed together to form a ball as the slime coagulates. The blue tint of the goo grows less and less translucent until it’s solid. Then his arm rumbles, waves of pressure building up when finally the ball of brine and fruit is launched out, smashing through the hull of the ship.
You peek out to see the ocean meeting the shore. Currently, you near some docks. The ship isn’t moving, but you do overhear a conversation.

“What was that?”

You hear Kae’s voice. “Go check it out.”

“Not before you answer my question. Where the fuck is Fy?”

“She’s at Harborside. We can leave without her.”

“What, the mythos spell shit? Weren’t you on that too?”

“This is an emergency that requires the immediate attention of the Order. Now go.”

You can hear him complaining some more, but you don’t waste time. You grab an old sheet and jump down, bracing for impact as you hit the water. When you land, your chest empties and you accidentally take a deep breath. Instead of water, however, you take in air. Your bag and sword also feel much lighter, and you begin to swim toward a boat.

Climbing on board, you find that it’s a motorboat worn with age. You cover your head with the sheet and cut the dock line, quickly starting the engine in the process. There’s no way you can enter town right now. You lower the engine into the water, speeding off. Behind you someone calls, but you don’t look back.

You let out a deep sigh when the docks disappear. Sluggish, you search around the boat and find a map and compass. Your stomach roars with hunger, but that’s no surprise. You wonder if you need to eat, or even drink, as you plan out your next move.

>To the Priscilla Mountains, a nearby dwarven area you remember Oakhelm bringing up.
>To Luxia, a long journey without a doubt, but time is precious.

what did he mean by this

it would be nice if we could see what quotes belong to who, and a brief description of the surroundings when we change surroundings greatly. when corpsey almost drowned i wasn't sure if we were in some sort of underground lake and floated to an open air lake or something like that.

Are you seriously asking or just memeing?

The quotes are pretty easy to follow so long as you can keep up with your reading comprehension. I'll agree slightly on the other point, but I just saw it as Lucky jumping in and immediately starting to drown.

They were getting suspicious of you and your relationship with the slimey guys.

I saw another qm color coding the quotes. I think I'll try that next session and see how it goes. As for the descriptions, I definitely have to work on that, as reminds me of another problem I have. Thank you for the criticism!

Oh and quick question. Did you guys catch who was the Oracle?
>>
>>387905
>Oracle
No, but I'll place my bets on Lucky 2 since she's our number one enemy. Since they mentioned baneweed though, the odds of it being Lucky 2 are pretty damn high.
