The war had been raging for about a year at this point. News was hard to get, living as far out from Viridian as your family did, but a military messenger managed to reach your community eventually. They’d even put him up on one of the thoroughbred Zebstrika, and not the cheap draft equines that’d you’d grown so accustomed to seeing. Messages were sent to all war-ready folk to enlist in the military, to protect their crown and country. It was certainly news enough for your little community, where the odd home still lacked access to the slowly structured electricity grid, and word from the world at large was rare.

When they first came, the news of the Johto incursion across the Mt.Silver border drew the ire of many. Tensions had always been high between the two nations, and in each nation’s timeline, the aggressors were blamed for much. Bad harvests, burning towers, and other misfortune bred the resentment that gave way to the flames of war. In a bad spot, people needed something to believe in, not that it was something you could begrudge them. Apparently the harvests had been bad across the mountains for the last several years, and their economy less than stellar.

A good number of your schoolhouse friends went to go and enlist. These are the same people that you sat next to for years between harvest seasons, when your labor wasn’t needed. You, like most of the people that happened to stay, did so mostly because you needed to. Your pa’s leg never quite worked right after that Tauros broke out of the reins and gored him good, but thankfully the orchards were doing alright. Most of the families around were in the apricot business, with the climate of the Viridian countryside being well suited to the different varieties that were grown.

Things didn’t stay quiet though. When the conscription letter came, your mother couldn’t help but break down into tears upon seeing ‘Barry Sinclair’ spelled out on the order. Two farms over, the Joneses’ son had been sent back missing his legs; a broken man from a war he believed just. Your ma didn’t see such a sacrifice as courageous though, just wasteful. She threatened to rip the commanding paper, at least until your father managed to wrench it away from her grip, still mostly intact.

Bags were packed, kisses were given, and a solemn last dinner was given before your departure for the city. Running your fingers along the stubble that threatens to break out along your jawline, it takes a moment to shake that thought from your mind. No, it’s not the last dinner you’ll have with your family. Just the last you see yourself having for a while.

The trip through the countryside was rather uneventful, you and your parents sitting in the older, barely functioning truck as it rode along, the three of you packed together as it chugged through the dirt roads of the countryside. Silence was your companion, as view of the city finally came into the way.

You’d been there a couple of times when you were younger, but Viridian has grown since the last time you’d come around. Buildings springing forth, and people going about their business. The factories around here- the few there were- had mostly been taken for the war effort. Vehicles, the experimental new pokeballs, and whatever all the military needed to fend off the Johto menace. People went about their business like usual though, but the hustle and bustle of the town itself would always capture your imagination.

Chugging along to your destination, what branch of the military did you get assigned to…?

>The Army: Boots on the ground, ‘frontline’ fighting forces. Though this also includes many of the medic corps, engineers of all varieties, and intelligence personnel that are needed for the war effort to thrive.

>The Navy: Working somewhat closely with certain sub-branches of the air force, the navy tends to take the fight directly to Johto. Usually associated with boats, but there are the marines, that take the fight more directly to the enemy.

>The Air Force: The newest of the branches, and mostly centered around airborne activities. The idea to include the newly trainable pokemon in the branch only expanded their options further.

The minute your mother heard that there was a chance of you dying horribly in a myriad of ways, her misgivings towards your conscription exploded immensely. If your father hadn’t been there to catch her, she likely would have fell to the ground when her hysteria got the best of her. The only thing that marginally mollified her was the idea of you being assigned safely on the ground, and far away from the action.

The drive is as somber as the rest of your trip, but at some point your hand has wormed into your mother’s hand. She’s giving you her worried look, with her black brow knitted together and thin lips pursed together. Compared to you and your father’s taller frames, and shared lightened brown hair, her slim, short figure juxtaposed against the two of you. It always passed your mind why she gave up life in the town for living on the orchard, as hard as it was. It’d probably have something to do with loving your father…

The weight of her hand brings a new comfort, and it soothes your own restless thoughts. Much like your father though, you’ve generally tended to weather whatever life threw at you, regardless of the consequences. The old man was trying to get up and back to work a week after his goring from the Tauros, even if the doctors told him he needed at least a month to heal his injuries. In the middle of the harvest season though, that was hardly an option. That was the first of many times you’d have to skip school to go and help out your family in the orchard…

Your attention is brought away from your mother however, as the Air force station comes into view. It seems that you’re not the only family taking their goodbyes and heartfelt salutations, though a couple of stragglers here and there seem to be arriving on their own. All of them carry bulging bags filled with what likely are their most pertinent possessions, apposite to the conscription at hand. Your own knapsack isn’t loaded down with much, save for two changes of clothes, various hygiene products, and a journal for your own personal musings. Your father parks slightly out of the way of most of the cars and trucks that have pulled up on the one story building.

It didn’t seem like very much on a first glance, but upon seeing the dull green canvas transport trucks parked alongside the structure, and emblazoned with the Kanto [blank] seal, it makes sense that they’d just transport you from the recruitment center to the training grounds elsewhere. You and your parents exited your truck, while moving among the throng of people clamoring around the entrance, saying their last minute goodbyes to the entering recruits.

“It’s a bit late for saying ‘stay safe’, right?” Your father’s gruff voice catches your ear as you turn to face him, only a couple inches smaller than the tall figure, cut slightly shorter by his limp. Skin tanned from long days in the sun, and a physique only degraded from his injury, dark brown hair slowly turning gray all over his face… “Or not to die, because if you die… I’ll actually have to hire help.”

It’s morbid humor, but it manages to draw out a chuckle from you. Your mother seems less amused by your father’s comment, slapping her husband in the chest. “Don’t say things like that, idiot!”

It’s things like this, the normalcy of life between your parents and you, that you think you’ll actually miss the most. There’s not much to be said on your end, seeing as the three of you have been sharing sentiments since the letter came in. What do you do when leaving your parents, for possibly the last time?

>Bring them in for a big hug. Might be the last one you’ll get. “Make sure the orchard doesn’t go to hell, alright?”
>You’re a bit too old for anything that sweet. Not for firm handshakes though. “Don’t skimp out paying for workers, you old cheapskate.”

You’re tearing up a bit, and ma was more or less on the verge of bawling her eyes out. You’re not sure if you’ve ever seen your father do anything close to crying though. The man was made of stone, and the idea of him being able to boggles the mind. Thankfully he’d avoid the waterworks, and just offer a warm smile as the three of you embrace. You’re somewhat flushed in the cheeks, but thankfully you’re not the only ones being so emotional. Makes you feel somewhat better about the whole thing.

Regard was given to the front of the building, which seemed to be gathering a bit of a commotion. The reasoning would become clear as a fantastically mustachioed figure seemed to be standing with a megaphone. It’d only take a moment for his voice to begin to blare out from the little device.

“Would all families of the incoming recruits please begin to make their exits! We hate to break your goodbyes short, but unfortunately protocol dictates that we engage the first part of their induction separate from any outside eyes, for the continuation of our security protocols.”

There were plenty of groans and other similarly disappointed sounds that came up from the crowd, but you could certainly understand why they’d want to keep the next part behind closed doors. Saboteurs of the war effort, simpleton civilians, and any other multitude of complications could erupt from having so many potential human hazards in one place. With a last bittersweet wave to your parents, you begin to make your way towards the entrance with the last stragglers of recruits.

The inside of the recruitment station itself seems to have been reorganized from it’s normal office-like appearance. Rather as all the new recruits swarmed in, they were being directed towards long, orderly lines that were situated in front large tables. What was on the tables though, was obscured by the mass of people in front of you.

“Everyone with a last name that begins with A through F, to line one! H through M to line two, O through T to line three, and everyone else to line four. Make sure you have your papers ready to show as well.” Yelled out one of the [military branch] minders, dressed in what you could assume to be their formal finery. It only took you a moment to head towards line three, though judging by everyone in front of you, the wait will take awhile.

>Wait in line quietly.

There’s a ginger girl talking animatedly to the figure behind her in line, more or less held hostage by their respective position in the line. For someone being drafted into a war, she seems awfully cheerful, as opposed to the dour mood that her companion seems to be giving off. You can’t exactly blame the raven-haired boy on the receiving end of whatever she’s talking about. No promise you’re all coming back home from this.

Minutes later, it’d finally be your turn at the front of the line. Everyone who had finished the process was being led outside to the transport trucks, ready to be packed up and shipped to the training camp. Before you on the table though, was a older man shuffling through papers, and a figure at his side fiddling with a crate on the ground.

“Papers, son. We’ll have your preliminary assignments, introductory gear, and lastly...your partner.” Everything else sounded just about right coming out of the bearded fellow, save for that last part… It piques your interest and a minor concern, at least based off the ambiguous nature of it.

>”Partner…? Like another one of the recruits?”
>”You sure your age isn’t catching up with you? What do you mean, partner?”
>”Yessir.” No questions. It’ll be explained likely enough, so you just need to stay patient. Just hand him your papers and keep the show moving.

The younger man at his side seems to be snickering something fierce, while the old man seems less blatantly amused to your question. His eyes were holding a fair bit of mirth though, his lips turned upwards into a gentle smile.

“I suppose you could call them something like that… Efficiently in an attempt to maximize the efficiency of the Pokeball, mass production has been engaged to expand their range beyond elite units. Experimental types are still restricted, but the developmental model has been okayed for the use of common field units.” He pointed towards you, though his comment was likely more recycled more than anything else. You highly doubt you were the first person to ask the question, though he still seemed entertained at the query.

You don’t know much about the device, but it was more or less a novelty at it’s inception. The rich were fond of pokemon fights in closed off arenas previously, pitting more vicious, hostile breeds against each other in bloody fights. Typically to the death, and spectator harm wasn’t beyond the realm of possibility. When the war began though, research and production had apparently been turned towards using the normally untamable creatures into engines of war.

It’s a bit confusing nevertheless, but he picks up on your bemused expression. “Don’t worry, we’re not saddling with you a Scyther, or something that dangerous…” His brow quirked, and he’d turn towards the man at his side.

“Did they put any in this batch of deliveries…?” Quickly his companion would shake his head, apparently finding what he wanted to pluck out of the box. A small lockbox, long and likely what you were expected to carry your introductory gear inside of, and a small...ball? It was a curious shape if nothing else, covered with small little wind-up gears.

“Now, according this sheet, Mr...Barry, was it? You were assigned a…”

Found it on the edge of the Johto border, eatin’ whatever small game was around. We actually…” He’d trail off, squinting at the paper, before giving you a sheepish smile.

You don’t like the look of it. “There’s not too much known about this particular species, at least in Kanto. I’d love to give you more information, but I doubt this creature will be too difficult to care for. Probably won’t get much bigger either.”

Bigger? “How big is it now? Half my size, a little smaller?” You ask, curious to see. The rattata’s or Ekans that’d occasionally infest barns would never reach longer than your arm at best.

“According to this, stretched out they measured it to about...5’11. They think it’s a juvenile as well, so expect further growth. Either way, let’s continue this. Next!” You’d have more questions for the older man, but he’d shoving papers and lockboxes into your arms, and you’re being shoved down the line to the waiting trucks outside.

To summarize how your newly christened air force career is going, you’ve just joined and they’ve handed you apparently what could be considered a small, likely upset beast of destruction. It’s not as if you’ve never had to spend time around the creatures, but those were beasts of burden The Rapidash that pull ploughs, or the miltanks that give milk are hardly the type of beasts that you have to fear on a daily basis.

It’s the only thing that’s on your mind as you head with the throng of new recruits towards the transport trucks, climbing clumsily as the last man into a vehicle, brows knit in concern. It’ll likely be fine, but the thought is worrying enough. You’d have been trapped in your thoughts for the duration of the ride, had the guy next to you not tapped your shoulder.

“So what did they saddle you with?” He’s around your age, but like you he’s rocking a stubble on his face. It made him look older, in a weird way, and you’re a tad jealous of the fact.

Your confused expression says enough for him to raise his own pokeball, slowly being polished in his hands. “Your ‘partner’. What did they hitch you with? I doubt everyone’s getting shoved together with a raging monster, y’know?”

>”You tell me first and I’ll spill.”

“A snake-thing? A big one, and probably getting bigger. Called a Dratini, if the guy giving out supplies knew what he was reading…” Actually, he did give you that paper he was reading off. Glancing over it while you’re settling the great number of materials that’d been pushed into your arms, apparently, it was a full report of what they knew about the Dratini.

It was carnivorous, with an allotted ration that’d be divided throughout the day, and based on a weight ratio. Acquiring more food for it beyond that would be entirely up to you. The boy sitting next to you didn’t seem to immediately recognize the name, shrugging at your description. “Not what I was expecting, but if they assigned it to you, it must have some practical use.”

“I got a bit of a simple one myself. One Rufflet, and apparently it’s a bit on the small side…” He sighs, leaning back against the wall as the trucks began to pull out of the lot, cranking and clanging, loud engines blocking out most of the sound. “Apparently they’re pretty fast though, at least when they mature. Can put a proper full grown Pidgeotto to shame.”

“At least that’s what the guy said. The jury is still out on this one if I had to be honest.” You’d probably prefer something like that, but there’s little you can do to fight it. “Oh, forgive my manners. I’m Tucker.” He’d offer a hand out in a handshake, which you take simply enough.

“Barry.” No need to get more complicated, at least when you’ve just met the guy. Though overall, the day is turning out to be fairly interesting so far. Saying goodbye to parents, getting your gear, and assigned a small monster. Emphasis on the ‘small’.

Overall though, you’re going to have to worry about the training camp later. With the last hour, you’re more or less drained emotionally, and you’ve got a lot of time to spend on this truck… What will you do?

[spoiller]Say hello to your new friend![/spoiler]

You’re in conversation with Tuck about something or another, mostly about what you’re both expecting out of the training camp. Nothing more complicated than the rest of the truck, that’s also flooded with conversation as the vehicle shuttled everyone in the convoy outside of the city. Though if you had to be completely honest, your attention is not entirely on your new acquaintance. Rather, it’s on the little device that you were given earlier, as your fingers travel the little crevasses and quirks.

It seems to be crank based, if you had to guess, digits slowly turning a small rod as you’re faced towards Tuck. His attention slowly is drifting downwards though, towards the activity with your hands. “Hey, uh… Barry?”

“Mhm?” You’re so close to cracking it open, if the little mechanical whines generating from inside of the orb are any indication.

“You sure you should be cracking that open…? Doesn’t seem very safe.” He’s scooting away from you somewhat, and a couple of the other nearby recruits are following suit. You look back down with a triumphant smile as the seal cracks, and the small, cramped space floods with light. Then you nearly immediately regret doing it, seeing as what comes out isn’t very pleased.

It definitely fits the description that was given to you. Lithe, long, yet it reminds you more of a lizard, than your average Ekans. Less reptilian, and more unmistakably intelligent, is the way it’s eyes narrow at you as it plopped forth in your lap. You hear it’s jaws click open as a long, drawn out hiss erupted from it’s maw. For a moment, that’s the worst of what you assume would happen.

You’re quickly proven wrong when it lunges straight for your throat, mouth of sharp, needle teeth poised to sink into your flesh. There was a saying in Kanto. Curiosity killed the Meowth.

Yo senpai, running the next thread in like...four hours. Make sure to be around for the next issue in the ensuing war.
>>
Can you link the new thread here when it's up?
>>
We could also continue in this thread, there's no need to make a new one.
>>
Yeah I know. I just posted in the wrong thread by accident.

There's not too much that you've immediately regretted in your life. Ill-advised bets of your youth that ended with you injured and your parents cross, lack of interest in your studies at times, or really just the odd choice you'd have to make at times. Right about now though, you have to consider opening the pokeball right at the top of the list.

The other recruits in the convoy truck are yelling, some of them screaming, others trying to press themselves against the coarse fabric behind them. None of them trying to really help you out, save for the surprised face of Tuck. His hands are outstretched towards you, but they're not going to be fast enough. Not when confronted with the predator you've unleashed.

It's less than optimal, the way it's rearing up in a winding, slimy rage. More concerning is the mouth of needle-teeth that appear to be heading towards your throat, beady black eyes hazed over in predatory instinct. It's a little like the look that the barn Meowths near the Orchard would get when they were sneaking up on a Pidgey.

However, the Dratini seems to have skipped straight to the pouncing part. Needless to say, that's not good.

>Try to wrestle the beast onto the floor of the truck. It's just as long as you are, if not longer, but is it as strong as you?
>Dodge and keep it at bay. You're not exactly confident in your skills to wrangle the dragon into submission.
>Try to calm it down. Look, it's a pokemon, right? How hard could it be compared to an irritated Miltank? Likely significantly more, but you'd be damned if you didn't try.

Maybe it respects strength?

This will end badly.

Almost certainly.

We either
A. Succeed and it may become more obedient
B. Succeed but it just makes it angrier.
C. We fail and it will never respect us again
D. We fail and die.

you just had to pick wrestle...

But I think it would end badly no matter what because its a man sized angry snake-dragon.

Your father didn't have much words of wisdom for you growing up, but he did tell you to dig in your heels and face a problem head on when something was in your way. Rather than running like a coward, you have to deal with your problems. Be brave, things like that. You haven't exactly had time to put his words into practice, but this seems as good of a time as any.

Rather than rolling away or pushing it off of you, you simply charge into the beast with a growl of your own. Not nearly as intimidating as the reptilian hiss that the Dratini emits, but still putting on a brave face. Doesn't take very long for the two of you to fall to the floor in a sprawl of tangled limbs and curling bodies. It doesn't seem very pleased to have you on top of it though, even as it coils around you.

Likely enough though, it didn't expect you to confront it head on. If the lack of biting is any consolation, it seems less inclined to attack easy prey, and more ready to wriggle out of your grasp.

Tucker, who was all ready to help you escape before, seems less willing to get down onto the floor with you, with your apparent fit of madness as you wrestle the creature to the ground.

>Let it get out of your arms. Obviously it thought that a pre-emptive ambush was the smartest thing to do, but afterwards it's not very pleased with the results.

Did it just expect to start this thing and leave with no consequences. Your teeth grit, eyes narrowing as you look down at the squirming, slimy creature under you. It doesn't appear as willing to combat your might now, not when it doesn't have the advantage of fighting you without much a struggle.

Unfortunately it's going to have a struggle on it's hands, and your determination can't quite be matched by any mere serpent. Tucker though, doesn't seem as nonplussed as you might be. "Barry, why the hell are you still trying to grab it?!"

"Because it decided to start this first!" Not the best example of decision making, but still your choice.

"Now stop your struggling, or shove you back in the pokeball!" Actually you have no idea how to do that, but it's a decent enough threat.

There's a tremendous amount of resistance, but then it absolutely drops to a mild, weak squirming. You look down on it's face, and while it's not exactly defeat, there's something more akin to...a form of submission? It's eyes no longer seem so keen to meet yours with the angry rage that it held before. It's quite surprising if anything else.

Struggling to your feet, the Dratini coils closer to your body. The other recruits at this point are more or less shocked at the turn of events, staring hard in your direction as you struggle to your feet in the shaky truck. Tucker seems shocked at the very least, probably from the fact that you're not dead. To be honest, you're a little surprised as well.

>Perk Gained: Dragon-tamer novice. Whenever you attempt to take actions with dragon-type pokemon, you can add +10 to the DC.

Heading back to your seat, the serpent slithers around your heels, not quite clinging to you, but keeping closer to you. You guess establishing dominance must have worked then... It's around that time the quiet in the cabin is interrupted by the driver yelling to the back.

"What the hell is making all that racket?!"

>"Just a bit of a civil dispute, sir."
>"Nothing, sir. Must have been the truck."

"Just a bit of a civil dispute between the passengers. It's been sorted out."

Plopping back down to your seat, the Dratini seems less hostile now as it follows after your heels, though if any of the recruits were to touch it, they'd have to recline their hands away from the quickly snapping jaws. Seems less interested in being touched by the others than you.

Everyone's eyes are more or less still on you, even as they try to go back to their own conversations. Gazes flick towards you for brief moments, and even Tucker seems a bit wary. "That was...quite stupid of you, y'know that right? It could have killed you if you hadn't been so aggressively idiotic."

"You call it idiotic, I call it ingenious. It's like a farmyard growlithe. You've just got to show it who's boss." Actually you've never seen one, but you'll pretend like you have any remote idea of what you were doing there.

The truck had been driving for awhile, and the sights and sounds of Viridian city had bled away into the background. For a moment you were hoping that the forested area you were heading into was nearby the Orchards, but eventually the conclusion was formed that this was farther out into the countryside than you'd ever ventured out. In some way it's daunting, but in others it's exciting. Out on your own for the first time, meeting interesting people, and taming monsters. So far the war didn't seem as bad as you'd been shown.

Eventually your attention is brought towards a break in the woods, as across the view you can see what appeared to be a camp of some sort or another. A couple of the trucks that were further ahead of your own seem to be pulling up the road into it, a steady stream of people unloading off the vehicle and onto the grounds.

It's not long after that you find it's your turn to be hopping off the truck, lockbox and knapsack hanging off your frame, while the Dratini-ugh, you need to give it a name-weaves between your legs. It almost trips you up a couple of times, but thankfully you don't fall. Almost immediately though, you get the same treatment from the truck.

People are staring at you, but mostly at the little monster at your feet. It seems to not like most of the attention, and appears to be trying to coil upwards around your body once more. Off through the crowd though, you can see a couple more people happened to pop open their pokeballs. One of them is the ginger girl from before, who appears to have a dark Murkrow hunched on her shoulder, and occasionally squawking loudly enough to spook some of the other cadets.

Another seems to have a floating...eyeball? It's blue, and has for prongs on the end of an enlongated section of it's body, but as to what it is, you don't have the faintest clue. It's a complete mystery, but at least you don't have the freakiest pokemon right? It's trainer is probably one of the largest boys here, not quite in height, but mostly in muscle mass.

"At least you're not the only one with terrible patience, huh?" Tucker comments, looking over at you with a smile.

"I call it an adventurous nature."

Choose two:

>Name the Dratini. A proper name, and not just calling it...thing. You don't know it's gender, but it feels like you have a male on your hands. Maybe.
>Wait for further orders. You're a conscripted soldier now. Just wait and see what happens from here.
>Go talk to the redhead. She seems awfully excited to be here overall, and also already opened up her pokeball.
>Go talk to the beefy guy. He's got a cloister of people around him as he's telling some tale or another.
>Talk to Tucker. You still don't know very much about him, mostly because the last bit of your ride was interrupted by a very mean lizard.

I vote Quetzal, it's gender neutral and fits the snake dragon we have

You look down at your new companion, squinting your eyes as you scrutinize it. Yep, it's gender is nigh impossible for you to figure out with a cursory glance. Thinking back to the little lessons you were told back in school, you'd have to name it after some old dragon god. It seems to fit, the creature being a serpent of some kind or another.

"Quetzal. I think that's a fair enough name for you, huh? Imperious, and a bit vain." As you say this though, it appears to give...an offended expression? As offended as a dragon could be, and this raises the question of whether or not it can understand you. A scary thought, in and of itself.

Turning away from the 'harumphed' lizard, you look at Tucker with a quirked brow. "Think you're going to let out your own little friend?" Wait, that sounded entirely strange. "I meant... The Rufflet. The bird thing." Your words are sort of getting away from you.

He's smiling in an amused way though, eyebrows raised up. "I'd take you up on the offer, but I think I'll have to wait till they actually tell us to do it."

"They never told us not to." You argue.

"That's a terrible excuse. Is that something you use commonly?" Yes, but there's no reason he needs to know that... Either way, the minutes wind down as you continue make iddle chatter. Eventually though, trumpets begin to blare out of the loudspeakers positioned around the camp, a voice coming out soon after.

"Line-up, and do it quick!" The voice was gruff, deep, and quite male. Everyone seems to be dropping into lines, though not very orderly in nature. The man who struts out from the barracks in the distance though has a face that...disturbs, most of the people there.

When you're ordering yourself into line behind Tucker, the reasoning behind their surprise quickly becomes apparent. And it's worse than you could have possibly thought. His face is slagged, at least half of it from the scarring that's apparent as he marches towards the front of the mass of people, frown apparent on his mug.

He's got a single eye that looks balefully out at the crowd, before he stopped in front of everyone. What might draw their attention more though, is the hound sized, white creature with a single obsidian horn jutting from it's head is a close second.

"Now, if you maggots are done fiddling with your dicks and lady-bits, how about we get his show on the road? I'll be your drill sergeant, Hicks. May whatever gods you believe in have mercy on your soul."

Well, that sounds less than optimal.
