“Hey. Heeeeey! Anyone there?”

The right side of your face is currently resting on cold dirt. You shift a bit.

“You’re alive! Oh thank heavens.”

Orienting yourself, you notice that someone has been prodding you. A girl in overalls and a collared shirt watches you, her sleeves rolled up and her hands holding a large branch.

“You looked pretty dead for a moment there. Ah, you still kinda do.” She laughs nervously. “It was scary finding a Frankenstein-y corpse on the road.”

“Franken...stein-y?” You question, discovering your lips are parched as death.

You also learn, to your surprise, that your body resembles a large, kinky jigsaw puzzle. Limbs and chunks are stitched together, matching the handiwork of the rags that you’re currently wearing. The beige mess sort of matches your pale, lifeless skin. On your neck, a paper is visibly dangling from a string. It reads:

Orion
Acies, Stella Mansion

“You alright there? Oh, I forgot introductions. Lucky’s my name, what’s yours?”

You answer, “I’m…”

>”I think… Orion?”

“Lucky. Yeah, that’s a good name, I’ll take it.”

“You can’t just take my name!” she protests, “Really, who are you?”

You scratch your head. “I can’t say I know. I like Lucky, I think I’ll use it.”

She challenges, “Not happening. How about… Seven?”

“Seven?”

“Yeah, like Lucky Seven! Wait, maybe that’s not so good.” She thinks hard for a moment and adds, “Well best to not to think about too hard. Alright, I’ll call you Seven, like my horse! You can have her name.”

Frowning, you reply, “No thanks. I’ll take Lucky.”

Out of the corner of your eye you notice something moving as she’s complaining. Behind Lucky is a horse carrying a small lumpy bag, filled with what appears to be mail. Next to it is someone awkwardly tiptoeing closer, his eyes glued to the bag. Your brow furrows, and Lucky turns to see what you’re looking at.

She quickly spins back to you. “A thief! Seven, do something!”

Dazed, you respond, “…What, me? And it’s Lucky now.”

“Yes you! You’re a guy; you’re probably stronger than me! Do something!”

You pick up a rock, wind up, and throw it toward the man with all you’ve got. Unsurprisingly, you didn’t know how much you got in the first place. The stone zips through the air, nailing him in the back of his head and sending him to the earth beneath. A rather large puddle begins to form.

You gaze at the body. “Uh. There you go. I did something,” adding a little nod at the end.

Lucky yelps and runs to the thief, examining it.

“Thank heavens he’s not dead. What were you gonna do if he died?”

“…Bury him?”

Exasperated, she wraps a strip of cloth around the thief’s head, ties him up with a bundle of rope, and toss him to a small cart behind the horse. Then, she lifts herself up.

She turns to you. “Come on, get in the cart.”

“Huh?”

“What, were you planning on lying on the road all day? Let’s go to a town.”

You get in without argument, and you both begin heading down the dirt path.

Curious, she asks, “So what are your plans, Seven?”

The bumps in the path knock you around a little. “Don’t call me that, and I don’t have any.”

“None? Really?”

You concentrate for a hard moment. “Well, I have an address, I think.”

You hand her the piece of paper and she studies it.

“Is this a mailing address?”

“What? I’m the mail? No way, that’s silly.”

She makes some sort of thinking sound. “I can tell Acies is a place. Pretty far away though, not sure what you’re doing here.”

“Okay Lucky 2, mind giving it back?”

As she turns and hands it back to you annoyed, a scream tears out from the woods nearby, sending birds flying away. Lucky stops the horse immediately.

“You should go check that out.”

“Me? Again?” you groaned.

“I’ll come with you. Someone could be in trouble!”

As she turns the horse, she sighs in resignation. “Why am I number 2?”

Coasting behind, you soon come across a clearing. Suddenly, someone leaps out.

“Stop right there, scum!” Her face burns with a red hot fury. “First you kill my brother, and now you plan on desecrating his body? I’ll end you here and now, vile fiends!”

Lucky stammers, “Huh? What? Oh him? He’s not dead, he’s fine! We were just taking him to the sheri- I mean the hospital!”

In between her nervous laughter, you point out, “We?”

She whispers in a panic, “Shut up! You’re the one that did this.”

The sister of the thief calls out, “I heard that! Get out here, coward, and let me slay you like a man! All he wanted was to get his mail early!”

Terribly confused, you step out. She rushes at you at an instant with a dagger drawn.

In a flurry of words, you lay it out cold. “It’s a felony to tamper with the mail, with charges going up to a $250,000 fine with five years in prison! You’re lucky we’re just taking him to the hospital!”

The girl stops dead in her tracks, baffled. “$250,000...?”

Lucky chimes in, “Copper! He meant to say copper.”

You go with it, continuing, “Slip of the tongue. Now, let us go! You were the one who screamed, right?”

She sheepishly stares off. “You win. Let me have my brother back, at least. I can treat him.”

“Glad-“ You start but Lucky cuts you off.

“Sure thing no problem. Here you go. Have a nice day!” Lucky turns to you and motions for you to get in the cart.

And in an instant, she rears the horse around and has Seven galloping away, pulling you along for the ride. You turn around to see the two get smaller and smaller, disappearing once you round a corner. Out of sight, out of mind.

After a while in silence, you note, “Copper?”

“Money? What the heavens is a dollar? Hey, uh, I kinda feel bad if I left you alone, poor and starving.”

“…Go on.”

“I’ll give you enough copper to stay at the tavern at Harborside and for a nice meal to boot.” She says, sneaking in, “And maybe a bath.”

“Pretty generous of you, Lucky 2. I’ll take it, thank you.”

“And uh, I’ll talk to a captain at the docks to try and get you a good deal. What I’ll give you won’t cover it all, but I’m not made of money.”

“Docks?”

“Acies is a long way off, and you can start by boat,” she explains. “Oh and… you’re a guy, right?”

“I believe so…”

You sit there in the rocking cart before a realization dawns on you. There’s nothing between your legs. Nothing. Like a doll. You sit there, cold sweat running down your face.

Eventually, you reach the front of the tavern, where she drops you off with a bag of 30 copper in your hand.

“I got stuff to do, take care, Seven!”

You feel like you’re going to see her again. Soon. Maybe too soon.

A sign reading Ye Olde Inne dangles above your head, and a loud ruckus can be heard inside.

You walk in, and your vision is now filled with dwarves. Unless this is a town filled exclusively of manly men and women of extremely short stature, you are sure there are numerous dwarves in front of you.

“BY URIST’S BEARD, IT’S A WALKIN CORPSE!”

“IT’S A FUCKIN FRANKENSTEIN.”

“Ach, shut yer mouths. Zombies aren’t real anymore,” one of them points out. “But lad, ye lookin a wee bit pale.”

You try to laugh it off. “Just a little sick, is all.”

Walking to the innkeeper, you get some curious gazes here and there. The innkeeper, who’s a human, recoils as you get close.

“Good god, you smell like death. Are you absolutely sure you’re not a corpse?”

“Pretty sure.” You’re not sure at all. “You got any jobs posted?”

“Why don’t you wash that putrid stench off?” He nudges very insistently. “5 copper. For you.”

“Gladly.” You cough up the coin and go off.

After turning your skin and rags a little less grey and little more clean, you go to the board where everything is posted.

A dwarf passing by wishes you well. “Good luck, Frank.”

“It’s Lucky.”

The prospect of money turns your eyes into slot machines hitting triple sevens. You rip a small dangling strip, the only tear on there, and go to the innkeeper.

“I want to do this one.”

“You can’t kill what’s dead, am I wrong?” he chuckles to himself, “Apologies. You’ll find it on the beach near the docks. The specific beast should be rather obvious once you see it, but it should be underneath the swirling sands. It is an antlion, to be exact.”

“Aren’t antlions… tiny?”

He scoffs. “If that’s tiny to you, I wouldn’t want to imagine what’s large.”

You nod and turn around, walking toward the exit. On your way out, someone slaps your ass and bounces you forward a couple of steps. A compliment of your cheeks is shouted out, quickly followed by raunchy laughter. The dwarf from before walks up to you.

“Here lad, take my sword. Can’t watch a poor lad like yerself walk to his doom. Return it nice and shiny, will ye?”

You give a big thank you and promise him that you will.

By the time you wander to the beach, you manage get a good layout of the town. It’s small, quiet, and dwarvern. Mountains stretch on both sides, ending as sheer cliffs when meeting the peaceful waves of the waters in front of you. They are far, far away. As you search for the beast, you realize this is a town for travelers crossing between the vast expanse.

You climb a rather large, sharp boulder and scan the area. In no time, you spot sand sinking eternally in a large circle, the radius matching your height. Pincers rise from the center.

It’s… pretty big.

You jump down and try to push the boulder toward the antlion. When it doesn’t budge, you stick the steel sword between it and the ground, using it as a lever. You can almost feel the blade snap, but it doesn’t.

The giant rock tilts a bit, and then gravity did the rest. Down it rolled, straight into the antlion. You see the beast trying to escape, but it was too late. The boulder settles in the center of the pit. What a smooth and easy job.

…Wait, how do you get proof of the kill?

Slowly, the boulder begins to sink deeper, suddenly dropping through the earth in the next second. You wait for the sand to settle before walking over to the pit. There’s a cave underneath.

As for the loot, the pincers are the antlion are down there for you to get, but how are you getting back up?

Scrounging around, you manage to find a large branch, which you toss down the pit. It falls onto the boulder and bounces onto the cave floor. Well, it’s solid.

You carefully jump down, planting your feet on the flattest part of the rock. You glance back up and realize you’re not going back the way you came in.

You leap off again, feeling the cold of the stone cave floor slightly. All this time you’ve been walking without shoes, but you haven’t felt a thing. Surprisingly, your sense of touch is quite dull.

Bringing up your weapon, you swoop down, cutting the pincers off with a whack and two. The quality of this sword is impressive, you note. Picking up the kill proof, you hang it over your left shoulder, your right occupied with keeping yourself armed. You stare at the stick on the ground and decide to wield it with your left hand.

The cave only goes forwards and backwards. A dim glow accompanied by rushing water can be heard from behind, while the ground rises into pitch black darkness ahead. Thankfully you brought a stick.

You head toward the path behind, the path steadily bringing you deeper and deeper into the earth while the blue glow rises in strength with the sound of moving water. Soon, you see something that makes you stop.

A translucent… thing is in front of you. A large antenna with a bulb at the end sticks out of its head, lighting the cave with an intense light and dying everything nearby the same color. Past it the light seems to be even stronger.

You watch as it slides around, picking at scraps. Focusing intently, you hear a faint humming beneath the loud crashing of waves.

Thinking of greeting the… animal, you thought about putting away your sword. However, you don’t have a belt to put the sheath in or even the sheath itself. This entire time you’ve been lugging it around like a moron. Instead, you just turn it around and hold it at your waist, pretending it’s away.

Softly, you speak. “Hello?”

Its antenna sticks up straight as an arrow and spins around to you, revealing an oversized mouth full of teeth. It shouldn’t have turned around; this thing is horrifying.

“H-hey there.”

You slowly crouch, grabbing a bone to offer it. Its antenna lowers. Slowly sliding toward you, the creature flicks its tongue out and tastes the bone. Then, it gets even closer, moving the tongue toward the antlion pincers.

The scene remains the same for a minute, except your heart is racing faster and faster. Suddenly, it makes a terrible screech, and it wobbles back. You let out a silent sigh of relief.

Slowly, you follow it to the sound of water. There, in front of you, is a massive lake with multiple rivers flowing into it. Drinking from it are two more of the slimy creatures, their harsh blue glow tearing into your eyes. This is awful.

The light bleeds through the water. With that, you can see the outline of an opening in the lake, presumably leading to the Salt Sea and freedom.

Swimming is another story. Maybe this is the time to test whether you’re actually undead or not. They can breathe underwater, right? You try to hold your breath, but your body instinctively forces you to inhale.

Crippling weight: Antlion pincer, sword, stick full of memories and precious moments.

Hugging your equipment like never before, you trek to the side closest to the opening. You wave a little goodbye to the creatures.

One. Two. Three.

You take a deep breath, and you plunge into the water. The weight of the sword pulls you down to the bottom, but you kick with your legs to propel yourself outwards. When did you learn to swim? Bubble by bubble, air seeps out of your body as you try to escape. The faint light of the sun reaches you as you land on the ocean floor. You attempt to float upwards, but the steel and your loot weighs you down.

Your lungs empty. Scrambling, you try to walk toward the coast. Trudging through, you find your progress to be painfully slow. Your body forces you to breathe, taking in the saltwater. Everything begins to darken. Where ever the water goes, it aches. Panicking, you jam the branch in your clothes, clutching onto everything on you with all you’ve got.

You sleep.

“Hey. Heeeeey! Anyone there?”

The right side of your face is currently resting on wet wood. You cough a bit.

“You’re alive! Oh thank heavens.”

This feels familiar. You sit upright, finding yourself on an old, sizable sailing boat. Lucky is crouching in front of you with a worried expression.

“I thought you went and died on me. Again! What were you doing?”

“Swimming. What are you doing here?” you ask.

“Loading the boat with supplies and mail. Getting ready for the journey!” She cracks a smile.

A man with a great white beard and fairly wet clothes stands next to her, looming over.

“You must be Seven. With a look like that, I coulda spotted you a mile away! You wer’ floating, dead as a doornail!” he roared, “Shoulda seen my face when I felt your heart still beating. Didn’ even need to kick you a few times.”

“It’s not- never mind. Thanks for saving me. Not sure what would’ve happened if you weren’t here.”

Your stuff. You check around for your things. A coin bag still sits in your pocket, the antlion pincer off to the side. You must have floated to the top when you let go of your sword. Thankfully, the kill proof is still with you. Maybe it’s worth more than the sword.

The boat docks as you tell a shortened version of the story, and the captain gives you his offer. “Lucky told me you wer’ heading to Acies. If you’re looking for the fastest way through the sea, then this boat’s the answer. Walking around the Salt Sea’s not such a good idea. Normally the fee’s 3 silver, but I’ll letcha on for 1.”

“That’s… 100 copper right, uh…?” You shoot in the dark.

“Aye, and call me Cap’n. Get back to me by tomorrow midnight, or I’ll leave withoutcha.”

Unsure of your true destination, you say goodbye as you head to the tavern.

You push open the door, and are greeted by sounds of wonder.

“WHOOAA, HE’S ALIVE.”

“And he’s missin ma sword!”

Drunk laughter breaks out. Thinking about it, you did get pretty lucky with the rock. Getting trapped in the pit would have been a nightmare.

“Thank the gods ye didn’t give him yer axe,” another dwarf jokes.

They talk amongst themselves as you give the innkeeper the antlion pincer.

“Nice and fresh,” you remark.

“I’m impressed. Well done.” He walks off and comes back, laying down 10 silver.

While you take it and stash it away safely, the sword-dwarf calls out to you.

“Come lad, let’s see if ye ken outdrink me. The name’s Dorgul Oakhelm.”

You hesitate. “Outdrink you? Not sure if I can do that.”

“Well ye ken pay me back for the sword. I think ye owe me that much.”

Turns out you need air to stay conscious. Corpse or not, perhaps someone stitched in 3 more livers so you can drink a dwarf under the table.

You agree and sit down.

“Don’t worry about payin, I got it.”

You can’t say you remember being drunk, but you sure know it’s not what you’re feeling now. Currently, it's more like dying. 6 full steins in and you are bloated as all hell and painfully sick. The dwarf in front of you, Oakhelm, is blasted.

“By my beard,” he pauses as he takes a huge gulp, “what the gods are you?”

Groaning, you answer, “Hell if I know. To be honest I just woke up-this morning- sleeping on the road. I don’t know what the fuck I am.”

Should you have said that? He laughs as he finished another stein.

“Say, yer good company. Want to travel with us fer a bit?” He looks at his empty mug. “Ah, a--nothe’ one!”

And then he collapses, his face coming in contact with the wood table. You finish yours, and you stumble outside to vomit all over everything.

After eating a nice hot meal in the morning, the only one you had the entire time, you walk around time. Time to spend some money.

Going around, you buy a brand new sword, rope, box of matches, bandages, and a bag.

You head back to the tavern, not sure what to do next. There, you see Lucky waiting outside.

“Hey Lucky 2, what are you up to?”

“Ha ha. The dwarves are going to be travelling soon. If you’re going by boat, then you should hurry.”

“That doesn’t seem like a coincidence, is it? Why is everyone leaving town?”

“What? What rock did you crawl out of? The Frost Witch is coming in a week, and maybe even earlier if the rumors were true.”

“The what?”

“The Frost Witch? The Lady of Ice? The mythos of the south?”

You shake your head. “Doesn’t ring a bell.”

“Some crazy ancient magus hates the autumn, so she sweeps in and ends it early. You can stay and tough it out, if you want.”

“Huh.”

>”I should go with the dwarves.”
>”Alright, let’s get on the boat.”

“I’m fine. I want to meet this Frost Witch.”

Surprised, Lucky replies, “What? Are you out of your mind?”

“She sounds like a nice lady. What, have you talked to her before?”

“No, but I’d probably die before I could get the chance to try.”

“You’re welcome to stay with me.”

“That’s…”

She stops midway. Is she actually contemplating this? Meanwhile, Oakhelm exits the tavern and sees you.

“Guess yer not comin with us?”

“Afraid not. Good luck on your journey, and thanks for the sword.”

“All’s well, and good luck to ye,” he says as he walks away reeking of alcohol.

You watch him meet up with a bunch of other dwarves, and you turn to Lucky.

“How about it?”

She lets out a coy laugh. “Okay, let’s see if the rumors are true. The mail can wait; this should be interesting.”

“Rumors? Are you hiding something from me, Lucky number 2?”

“Why don’t you meet her and find out? Now if you’ll excuse me, I need to get my stuff off the boat.”

The innkeeper cut you a deal, letting you stay in one of the rooms for free if you help around Harborside. As Lucky is going up the stairs in the tavern, you sweep the dust off of the wood floor. You feel a little chilly and wished you got some new clothes. Really, you’re heading to winter in rags.

Stepping outside to dispose of the trash, you feel a piercing cold underneath your feet. Underneath your foot, you find ice. A line, no thicker than your forearm, grows wider as in a jagged pattern it leads down the road. You step off of it, and you gawk as it extends toward your new location.

The ice begins to thin. In the distance, you can see a shape floating off of the ground.

Lucky said a week, right?

You raise your hand in the air and wave it. As the figure gets closer, you toss out a friendly, “Hello!”

The frost on the ground bleeds afar, forming a thin layer of ice that’s approaching you. When it’s about to make contact, it stops, and it grows around.

“Greeting an old friend that way. How cold,” she giggles, “it’s been a while.”

Her response catches you off guard, and she can see it in your face. You can feel her heart sink, a sullen expression washing over the smile from beforehand.

“Perhaps I should have not come early.” With a deep breath she said, “Even your appearance is unforgettable, but it seems mine is not. This, I saw coming. Fading relics of history, and I will leave that be.”

“I…” You search for words to say. “…don’t remember.”

“And neither do I.” The woman before you gazes into your eyes. “So, strange traveler, why do you stand before me?”

“I’ve always wanted to meet a walking legend.”

“Ha! The audacity.” She flips her hair, laugher hiding a silent rage. “Flattering will do you no good. Don’t tell me that was the only reason.”

“It seemed like it would be interesting.”

“You knowingly confronting a mythos without a single memory. Because it was interesting? That’s quite the pair of stones on you.” Her teeth clenches, visible even with her attempts at hiding it. “A hundred years I’ve spent searching, and there’s not a single iota of magic left in your bones.”

You want to clamp your hand on your mouth.

She rises higher in the air, the vapor in the air around her freezing. The light of the dying sun shines through, the rich orange mixing with the cold blue of the sky and bringing a cascade of green light down onto you.

“Prove to me that you are worthy of standing before me, as your actions claim. If your past is gone, then show me your present!”

Full of ire, she chills the world near and afar. Your body slows to a crawl. The frozen waters below her give you no time, lunging for you.

You gather all the strength you could, breaking through the ice that permeates through you. Jumping out of the way, the tide of frost skims your legs, landing numerous cuts. However, you waste no time. Ignoring the dull pain, you run straight for her.

When she sees that your sword still wasn’t drawn, she hesitates for a moment. You take this chance and leap forward, embracing her. The chill of her body eats through your body, every surface and every joint aching as you hold her tighter. She grabs at you, pulling at you.

And then she relents.

You can feel her chest heave irregularly and feel your shoulder getting wet.

“What you were looking for…” you recounted, “Was it…”

“…You.”

You give her a few soft pats. “Maybe we should start with introductions next time.”

She pulls at your clothes tighter. “I hate you, Helios. You never chang-”

Suddenly, your chest hurts. Her’s stops moving.

You pull away, jaw shaking from both the temperature and pain.

Looking down, you see a blood covered steel harpoon connecting you to the Frost Witch. You push away her hair, tracing the rope going from the exit wound on her back to the tavern entrance.

There, a girl in overalls and a collared shirt stands, her sleeves rolled up as she holds a harpoon gun, grinning like she just nailed Moby Dick.

It's great. NPCs seem to have some motivations and personality, some things are happening, the drawings and descriptions are nice and clear.
The Frost Witch coming might lack a bit of foreshadowing (if it was a planned encounter). idk what's in this >>354025 picture. We seem to have rolled a character that stinks of death but has a shitton of charisma.
>>
>>357036
Thank you! I'll definitely keep all of that in mind. For >>354025, I tried to put the new items and a small map in the same picture, but it didn't go so well, whoops.
