Currently…
You feel good. You’ve never been one for hospitals, and one of the largest ones in the city currently sits behind you, looming and waiting for another mistake. You’re flanked by your companions: Katie, for her part, is wearing a forest green dress with a floral pattern on it; you think it compliments her eyes, not that you want to keep looking at them or her. Definitely not. She’s a friend… Just a friend.

To your right is Kori. Reliable, strong, and a little mysterious, you feel like the two of you have an unspoken understanding. You can rely on her blunt nature and observation skills to give you a healthy dose of reality. You’re avoiding looking at her for a different reason. Floating behind your friend in the purple dress is a Mismagius, the same one that tried to kill you yesterday. You can feel a lingering hatred being projected your way.

Instead, you turn your attention to the pokemon walking by your feet: Anuket, the injured Totodile you caught yesterday, and Lugh, the Growlithe you and Katie hatched. He’s growing bigger, and there’s only a few more days until he’s in fighting shape. You remember Katie telling you that he soaks up whatever he sees: whether it be catching, training, or battling. You’re not sure he’s seen any battles.

Anyways, there’s one day left before the biking event happens. You have a whole day to spend however you like. You…

>Train. It’s important to get stronger for the challenges ahead.
>Do a few missions. You’ll need the money.

“So what’s the plan?” Katie asks. Everyone stops walking, and you see you’ve only managed to get across the street. Not far away enough from the ominous gaze of the hospital. You can’t think of a good enough reason to keep walking, so you choose to address Katie’s question.

“We’re going to train,” you announce. After all, that’s what you guys agreed to do last night, and with the shit you seem to face on a regular basis, it’s probably a good idea.

“Alright, what kind of training?” Katie asks. You raise your hand, one finger pointing at the sky, about to respond, but you stop yourself. You’re not really sure how effective your previous training sessions have been. Besides, isn’t Katie supposed to be the training expert?

“Um, what do you recommend?” You ask her. Katie puts a finger to her chin as she contemplates.

“Well, you could always train your pokemon stats. They have specialized areas for that stuff. You could also focus on their moves, which is really more my specialty. For example, we could work on strengthening Gojira’s Sandstorm or making it last longer. And as a battling expert, you should be teaching your Pokemon battle commands. I admit, I don’t know much about them, but I guess they’re supposed to be useful?” Yeah, you suppose you’ve been lacking in that department, but you were waiting to get a team first so they could all learn together. And you do happen to have a team of six already, with only one partner still at home with your mom.

“And what about you two?”

Your companions look at each other. “Well, I was hoping to visit my uncle,” Katie says. “He’s a renowned move tutor, and I was hoping to learn more.” You see a glint of passion in Katie’s eyes. Didn’t she say she wanted to popularize move tutoring and get it recognized by the league? “But I would still help you train of course!” She adds.

“I need to gather supplies,” Kori states, flatly. Well, you suppose that’s smart.

Katie leads you away towards a specialized training area, while Kori walks the opposite way. While you walk, you decide to train…
>Stats. Every little bit helps.
>Moves. You’re interested in how strengthening them works.
>Battle Commands. It’ll add versatility to combat.
>Nothing. Instead you want to join Katie and meet this move tutor.

“Actually,” you say after a short, silent five minute walk, “I would like to accompany you when you go visit your uncle.” Katie raises an eyebrow, a question silently asked. “I just, um, think that I want to train my pokemon’s moves and that it would be best to, uh, train with a master tutor.” Smooth. Katie continues walking and you match her pace.

“Yeah, that’s a good idea.” You both continue moving in silence, and you can’t stop thinking. What does she mean by ‘that’s a good idea?’ Is she offended? You look at her hand as you walk, and the urge to hold it seizes you. You don’t of course. Friends don’t usually hold each other’s hands, right?

“Not that I don’t think you’re a good teacher,” you blurt out. “I’ve never seen you teach, but… Um, I figure we can both learn something together.” Oh man, when did it get this hard to talk to her?

“Alex, are you okay?” Katie asks. She swoops down to pick Lugh up, and holds the panting pup in her arms. You don’t respond, so she continues. “I like the idea, but I’ve got to admit I’m, like, maybe a little bit nervous? He’s a pretty talented guy, and I’d feel so inferior?”

“Is he like the battler’s equivalent of a gym leader?”

“Actually, yeah, in a way,” Katie says. “There’s no physical form of recognition, but I still want to impress him?”

“I understand,” you tell her, and you really do. You have an uncle of your own. Well, he’s more of a family friend, but he’s an impressive trainer, and you’d be remiss if you couldn’t impress the guy the next time you see him. “Anyways, I don’t think you should be too worried.”

“And why is that?” Katie asks, a shred of anxiety hidden under a playful tone.

“Because I know you’re pretty awesome, and I’m sure he’ll see it too.” There it is. Katie’s smile. Man, you could not get tired of seeing it.

A quick bus ride later and you find yourself looking at a huge gate. The metal has been shaped to look like two vaguely shaped Pokemon fighting each other. One looks like a feline pokemon of some sort, maybe a Persian, while the other one is clearly some form of dragon. It looks impressive, but what’s more impressive is the garden view from in-between the metal bars. Bushes are shaped into various pokemon, flowers are dispersed throughout, and there’s a Horsea statue on a fountain. The yard looks beautiful.

“Yeah, my uncle makes plenty of money selling his services,” Katie tells you. She must have seen the look of wonder on your face. She presses a white box near the metal gate, and you hear a beep sound. You notice a camera on a nearby tree move to get a better look at the two of you.

“Ah! My niece,” says a voice over the intercom. “And who is this? Your boyfriend?”

You see Katie blush a little. “N-no, he’s a friend,” she stammers. You feel some warmth on your face too. You’re blushing, but is it because she’s blushing or…?

“Regardless,” the voice continues. “Please, please, come in.” With that said, the gate opens. Katie continues to lead the way, and you see that behind the fountain is a moderately humble home. It’s a decently sized house, not as big or expansive as some of the other ones in the neighborhood. When the two of you reach the house, an overweight, balding man steps out.

“Greetings, greetings,” he says. “My name is Casey. What brings you here today?”

“Hi uncle,” Katie says, before you have a chance to speak. “This is my friend Alex, and we were hoping for a quick lesson.”

“Right, right,” says the man. “Then let’s get the customary battle out of the way. I suppose it’ll be a double battle?”

Your eyes immediately turn to Lugh. He’s going to learn proper battle technique and this is the perfect opportunity to do so. You nod your head. “Alright, we accept,” Katie states.

“Good,” Casey says. He leads the two of you through his house. It strikes you as professionally furnished. There’s a wide screen TV hanging on a wall with black floral pattern wallpaper. There’s a beige rug on the floor surrounded by grey, white, and black couches. Some of the couches have yellow pillows on them with a pattern similar to the one on the wall. It all meshes together really well, or at least you think it does. You used to watch those house building shows with your mom, and this one looks like something a professional would build and furnish.

The backyard is simpler. There’s a simple dirt battlefield in front of you. In the center is a small pond of water. There’s a stone fence surrounding the property, and a few trees littered around. You suppose you could use the trees to your advantage, but you’d have to be wary of the pond.

“So what’s the plan?” Katie whispers.

>She’ll play support, you’ll go on the offensive.

“Let’s stick to our strengths,” you tell her. “I’ll go on the offensive, and I’d appreciate it if you support me. We want to put a good show for this guy, and he strikes me as someone pretty strong.” Hopefully he doesn’t have a pokemon with supereffective hits. Actually, since he’s a move tutor, he probably has a wide range of moves. You’ll have to be extra careful when facing this guy.

“Alright,” she whispers back. “I’ll go with Iggs. He’s not that strong, but he has helping hand, gravity, and heal bell, so he’s my best support ‘mon.” She grabs you hand. “And thanks for helping me,” she adds, before letting go and turning to face the battlefield. She – she actually held your hand, even if it was only for a few seconds.

You try not to let this revelation distract you. After all, you have a cute girl’s uncle to impress. For your part, you decide to use:
>Gojira, that gravity will come in handy.
>Vulcan, his defenses will keep him safe.
>Anuket, even though she’s still injured, she can use that pond.
>Mot, you’ve never used him before but now would be a good test run.

(Gojira and Vulcan aren’t injured anymore, btw.)

“Just so you know,” Casey calls out, “this will be a two-on-two battle. You’ll each use one pokemon, and I fully expect you to realize when you’re outmatched or when your pokemon can no longer battle.” He walks to one end of the battlefield, and you and Katie walk to the other.

You send out Gojira. He looks around, and instead of going to his usual place by your side, you see his expression turn serious. He knows when a battle is imminent. Katie sends out her Igglybuff. You do a quick scan of him with your pokedex: “Igglybuff, the ballon pokemon. They are known for their soft, tender body, and for bouncing around for hours on end.” You see the round pink pokemon standing still near Gojira. Huh, it must be well trained to not bounce around like that.

Casey sent out a light-blue duck-like pokemon and a blue plant bulb with a round body and beady red eyes at the same time you sent out your pokemon. Your pokedex informs you that they are a Ducklett and Oddish, both of which have doubley super effective moves. You’re going to need speed, luck, and strategy if you hope to win.

You…

“Gojira, dig!” You command. You can tell, he’s gotten better at using that move. Whereas before there would be hesitation or difficulty digging through the dirt, now he plunges through it almost as if it were water. In fact, it looked like he dived into a pool and just disappeared. You see him jump up occasionally then dive back down quickly, and you can see that your opponent is similarly impressed. You hear Katie gasp in surprise, but you don’t hear her issue any commands. You have to admit, you’re a little surprised yourself. It’s almost like that one time where he jumped over Vulcan to land a critical strike.

Your opponent quickly recovers though. He orders a Sleep Powder and Gust combination. You see Oddish spread some kind of green powder around herself and the Ducklett uses Gust to scatter the powder to your side. Gojira is obviously protected from the attack.

“Copycat!” Katie calls out, and you see Iggs move his tiny arms in a circular motion. A gust of wind surges forward, and the green powder gathers on top of the pond. That was quick and clever thinking on her part.

You…
>Order Gojira to go on the offensive. The way he’s moving will undoubtably hurt.
>Have Gojira drag that oddish underground. You’ll take it out first.
>Use Sandstorm underground to catch your opponent off guard.
>Have some other strategy in mind [write-in]

That crit roll permanently improved Dig. You also get a +40 to your next action.
>>

In my mind Igglybuff should use Gravity as you use Dig on Ducklett as it's clearly the more offensive of your opponent's mons (and probably isn't expected to get hit) and you can double down on Oddish afterwards.

You signal your intentions to Katie with one brief glimpse. She gives you the slightest of nods, and you feel confident that you can pull this off. There’s some kind of connection between Gojira and you – the same one you felt yesterday. You feel connected in a way that feels as natural as breathing. Gojira and you are one and the same; you are both an extension of the other.

“Ducklett, use Water Pulse to spread the pond water! Oddish, help out with Nature Power!” You point forward at the light-blue duck pokemon, and Katie orders her Iggs to use “Gravity: Well” on it. You see a blob of dark energy coalesce above the Ducklett. It quacks in surprise before the dark energy descends on it, and only it. The Ducklett falls into a hole left by Gojira.

You see the Oddish running as fast as it can to the pool in the center of the arena. There’s a look of fear on its face, while Casey’s face betrays no emotion. There’s nothing it can do though. Ducklett suddenly breaks through the ground and hits Oddish. Both of them fly for a few feet before hitting the ground.

Obviously stunned by the unexpected attack, the Ducklett attempts to stand up or fly away but it gets caught up in Oddish’s leaves, which cause both to fall again. Gojira pops out of the ground behind the two prone pokemon, and with a single smack, they both go flying and hit the wall. When they both hit the ground, it’s obvious that they’re both fainted.

(1/2)
>>
This was your first landmark victory; neither of the pokemon on your side took damage. And you can barely pick your (metaphorical) jaw off the floor. Katie has her hands on her mouth, eyes wide, and you see the look of complete defeat on Casey’s face. “… Spectacular. I – I honestly didn’t expect such teamwork, such fearsome power. Katie, where did you find this young man?” He recalls his two fainted pokemon, and starts walking over to your side of the field.

“I, uh, you see,” Katie starts mumbling. She honestly never expected to win, let alone impress her uncle.

“She found me training and taught me how it’s done,” you say. It’s not exactly a lie since she did tell you could train way better.

“Uh, yeah, sort of,” Katie says lamely. Casey steps over to stand near the two of you, then he embraces both of you, catching you by surprise. Katie melts into the hug, so you do too. It’s actually very nice.

“You both,” Casey says, letting go, then pointing from you to Katie, “are going to go very far. That modified gravity attack was really impressive, and young man, the way you commanded your pokemon so effortlessly! I can already tell you’ll make it all the way to the Elite Four, maybe even to the champion.” He hands Katie his trainer card, and you do the same. She can handle the money transaction thing; you’re not sure how it works for double battles of this variety. “So do tell, why did you stop by?”

“I was hoping to get move tutoring lessons from you, and Alex wanted to teach his ‘mons some new moves,” Katie says as she expertly types things into her omnivice. She scans the trainer cards before handing them over to their respective owners. Casey grabs yours to inspect it.

“An S-class trainer, huh? I guess the outcome was decided the moment I challenged you,” Casey says. He seems to ponder for a moment. “Yeah alright. For a champ-in-the-making, I’ll teach each of your pokemon one move, and Katie here will help me out.” He looks at Gojira. “For that strong ‘mon, here’s your options:”

>>
You debate between Earth Power and Stealth Rock. One goes really well with the landshark Kaiju thing you have going on; the other would be extra useful down the road.

“If I could make a recommendation,” Katie says. You nod your head but she doesn’t say anything.

You’re not sure what she wants from you, but there’s a look of expectation on her face. “Uh, please?”

“That’s what I was waiting for,” she says, some tease in her voice. “I think Earth Power suits your pokemon more. From what I’ve seen, Gojira has a very aggressive fighting style despite his nature. I think he compensates with how hard he doesn’t hit by trying to hit things harder, if you get what I mean.” You shake your head. She kind of lost you there. “Well I’ve noticed that Gojira hesitates just before he hits the enemy. It happened during the ghost battle and it happened here too. He’s fast, but he doesn’t hit as strong, so giving him a ranged move like Earth Power will go really well with how Gojira likes to attack.”

Huh, you never really noticed. “Yeah, he can be pretty aggressive,” you say, “but he can also be pretty smart. I think Stealth Rocks is the smarter choice, since it’ll be pretty useful later on, when there’s trainers with six pokemon. Besides, it has a lot of tactical uses both inside and outside of battle.”

“I’m not gonna argue with you,” Katie says. “After all, you’re the battle expert.”

That being said, Casey and Katie, with your help, instruct Gojira on how to use the move. It involves tapping into an inherent power found in most rock type pokemon. It allows Gojira to put his tiny green arm on the ground and pull minerals from underneath the surface to him. With enough practice he’s able to summon out of the ground, where they float by. “It’ll take a little more practice to get right,” Katie informs you. She looks at her uncle to make sure the information she’s giving you is correct, and he nods his head. “Right now, he’ll only be able to summon stealth rocks near his location, but eventually, he should be able to summon them on the opposite side of the field.”

With that concluded, you move on to Vulcan. He seems very happy to be outside his pokeball, and he sniffs at Gojira curiously. Your choices are:
>Iron Defense
>Shock Wave
>Stealth Rock

You gotta admit, all these options sound good, and you kind of wish you could learn all of them, but since you can’t, you can at least eliminate a few. Stealth Rocks is a move one of your pokemon already knows, and you don’t need Vulcan learning another move that would tire him quickly. “How about-”

“Um,” Katie interrupts you. You wait for her to speak, but she doesn’t. You don’t either. It quickly turns into a Mexican standoff – a battle of wills. This goes on for 10 seconds before you relent.

“Alright, what do you recommend?” You ask. Katie smiles slyly.

“Well I noticed that Vulcan doesn’t have any ranged moves, and you would really surprise your enemies if he happened to know Shock Wave,” Katie says. “Plus, it doesn’t miss!”

“Yeah, but he has a weak special attack,” you counter.

“It could be a finishing move, or you could use it when trying to capture an opponent. Besides, it’ll cover your water weakness.” She has a point. You relent and agree that that’s the better move. Besides, you already have harden.

This time, they teach Vulcan about static electricity, and how to use his metal skin to generate it. Apparently, he’s supposed to rub himself on certain surfaces beforehand to generate negative ions to his positive ions or something like that. You probably should’ve paid better attention in those science classes. When he releases the static buildup though, electricity arcs all around him, making it difficult, if not nearly impossible to dodge. “There we go,” Katie says. “Vulcan will need to prepare the move ahead of time, which means you shouldn’t touch him when he does. In time, he’ll learn what materials to rub against and be able to build up the static in battle instantaneously. He just needs more practice.”

That done, you call Anuket to you. She gets up from the wall she was leaning on, with Lugh helping her. Your choices with her are:
>Block
>Ice Punch
>Focus Punch
>Water Pulse

Sorry Iron Defense and Superpower bros. You'll probably get another chance to learn these moves in the future.

>Ice Punch
You can never go wrong with one of the elemental punches.

An Ice move! Pretty good I'd say.

Ice Punch. Always Ice Punch.

We can have Lugh help Vulcan with that. Lots of fur for Vulcan rub with. Also makes Lugh's fur go floofy

Yeah, I doubt a metallic being can do anything with static electricity. I dunno.

Anuket looks up at you curiously. You feel a tinge of guilt when you see the bandages around her torso. You also haven’t really had a chance to use her, but you’ve made sure Anuket’s been comfortable since you caught her, so that has to count for something.

“Hey, what’s wrong with this one?” Casey asks.

“When I was trying to catch her, I accidently ended up cracking one of her ribs,” you tell him. You see a worried look on Casey’s face.

“Well there’s no way I can train her in that condition.” Well, shit. You feel some disappointment. “Hold on,” he says, before walking back to his house. When he returns, he has a Chansey behind him. Oh, maybe you were too quick with your feelings of disappointment. They probably stem from your feelings of guilt, or something.

“This here is one of my pride and joys,” Casey says. “Chance here is a goddamn miracle of a healer. Go ahead, Chance. Show this fella’ what you can do.” The large pink pokemon turns to face your Totodile. You see the Chansey gather energy, focusing it on the egg on her pouch. It starts glowing faintly, but soon the glow is brighter. She hands the egg to Anuket. She looks up to you for permission, and after she receives it, Anuket hungrily eats the whole thing. Her body begins to glow then dim. You unwrap the bandages, and she stretches experimentally.

When she notices no sign of pain, Anuket starts running around without a care in the world, which you find unusual. For all the time you’ve known her (which admittedly is only a day), she’s been cautious and quiet, but now you can see her swim carelessly in the pond.

“I’d charge ya,” Casey says, “but think of this as an investment. So which move were you thinking of showing her?”

“Oh that’s easy,” you say. “Ice Punch is honestly a no brainer.” It’s a really great offensive move, and it would work well with her Hone Claws and Aqua Jet attacks.

Katie gets to work, instructing Anuket how first to punch correctly, then how to manipulate the energy within her to lower the temperature around her fist. It’s pretty obvious that this is a difficult move to learn, so Casey takes over. He releases an ice-cone pokemon, and shows Anuket the difference between room temperature and freezing temperatures. He shows her how every pokemon has an aura they can tap, and that since she’s a water type, she can manipulate water to an extent, thus ice. It takes a while to grasp the concept. “Well, she’s more or less got it,” Casey says. “You’ll just need her to be in the right mind set before you attempt the move. Starting out, it might be a little more difficult to use, but overtime, it’ll become natural.”

That done, you release Mot from his pokeball. The Yamask salutes you, ready for orders. His options are:
>Block
>Magic Coat
>Snatch
>Spite
>>
>>350938
My headcanon has him rubbing on magnetic rocks and metabolising that magnetic charge into electrical energy.

Both are really good.

I'm trying to make this setting a little more realistic, but it's kind of difficult. If Alex reads some and starts studying, this could very well be a possiblity.

This time, you turn to stare at Katie, awaiting a response. “What?” She asks, obviously uncomfortable underneath your smoldering glare. You raise an eyebrow. She knows what. She stares back and it becomes a staring contest. This is honestly pretty easy for you; you could get lost in those Emerald eyes for a long while. Unfortunately, it doesn’t take her long to blink and lose.

“Alright,” she says. “My recommendation is Magic Coat. Since your Yamask-”

“Mot,” you correct her. She glares at you before continuing.

“Since Mot is mostly a defensive pokemon, Magic Coat is your best bet. It’ll block and reflect any status moves your opponent plans on using, even stuff like taunt or entry hazards like Stealth Rocks.” You whistle. That would come in handy.

Katie gets to work right away. Thanks to Mot knowing protect, Katie has an easier time working with him. The principles are the same. Whereas Protect manifests energy to block all attacks, Magic Coat does the same thing, except it uses part of the energy to reflect weaker attacks back. The weakest attacks are those that don’t do damage, so those can’t penetrate the Magic Coat and are sent right back. “There we go,” Katie says. “Mot should have no problems using this move. He’s like a sponge eager to lean. You could pick up a few things if you emulated him.” That last part was said playfully.

“What are you trying to say?” You ask in mock offense.

“Just that you’re pretty smart, and you could be smarter if you studied.” Katie sticks her tongue out at you, so you attempt to grab it. She pushes you away, but lightly. “Oh my gosh, Alex stop!” You poke at her, and she starts poking back, both of you giggling like mad idiots.

Casey clears his throat and you both stop. Woops. You honestly forgot he was there. “I see you have one Pokemon left that requires training,” he says.

“Yeah, Lugh,” you say. At the sound of his name, the baby Growlithe stops playing with your other pokemon and moves to your side. You gladly note that the other four are socializing with each other.

Casey inspects the pup closely. “I’m afraid I cannot teach him anything. He is yet too young.” Before you say or do anything else, Casey hands you a card. “When he is ready, call me at this number. I did specify that I would teach all your present pokemon a move, and I intend to stick by my promises.”

You gladly accept. The day has honestly been a very productive one, but you see the sun setting. Tomorrow you’ll be leaving to River City, and you still have yet to say goodbye to your mom.

A trainer’s job is never done.

[Alright all, thanks for participating! That’s the end of this thread. Sorry. This weekend is pretty booked; friends have claimed me for drunken shenanigans, and I’d rather not drunk post. Next thread will be announced on twitter; probably for Monday. If someone could archive this thread for me, I would really appreciate it! Bye!]

writing drunk romance (with drunk characters possibly) could've been fun but surely keeping some integrity to the story is fine as well. looking forward to the next thread.
