"Black Hearts. Cold Steel. Dark Deeds."

These are the words of the Black Company, the infamous band of mercenaries that has been on one side or the other of every major conflict on the continent since its founding.
The Company has seldom cared who they fight for or the cause so long as they are paid, and paid well, when the killing work is done. Though they may be considered by some to be little more than glorified brigands, it cannot be said that the Black Company is not good at what they do.

Recently the Company has taken up a contract with a new employer, one more powerful than any that have come before. An employer with endless ambition, as well as the means and lack of moral scruples needed to pursue it. An employer that pays well...

Double Pay. Two sweet honeyed words that suckered you and your squad into a mission that is quickly revealing itself to have always been of the suicidal variety.

You’re in enemy territory, pretty much surrounded, your head hurts something fierce [14/15 HP] AND your employer’s sister has only just now deigned to inform you of the Hell Gate she and her cronies have been summoning right behind you. As the reality of the current situation settles in you do what junior-NCOs do best, consider how to best avoid getting caught in the shit-storm caused by your superiors.

The squad isn’t taking the news of the impending Below too well, none of them apart from maybe Mask are keen to meet the Dark Father personally any time soon. None of the others except Smiles-at-Dice were with the Black Company 6 years ago, so they haven’t seen firsthand what’s coming. But they’ve heard the stories, everyone has, and this assortment of some of the hardest mercenaries out there is starting to get nervous.

With that silent glare that only a veteran non-commissioned officer can ever truly master, the rest of the squad ceases their bickering and listens to you.

“We’re fekked, no two ways about it. I’ve been fekked before though, and the best thing to do now is pull our shit together and unfek ourselves however we can.”

The grizzled ex-Neumunster veteran Lancer ‘Jack’ Marcus grunts emphatically at your words, he’s seen it all from the other side as well. The rest of the squad doesn't cheer, that would be embarrassing for you and them both, but they do nod and get back to their positions, the grips on their giant blades a little firmer now.

“Yeah yeah, nice speech boss” Trooper Schuster mutters, trying to hide her returning confidence with a scowl. “But how do we go about that?”

She has a point, with Neumunster forces bearing down on you and the runes spinning faster and faster behind you, if you’re going to make a choice it has to be now. [Cont]

>>35306
To the North lies the centre of Sarsburg, the greatest city in the world, at least according to every Neumunster citizen including the vast amount of those who have never laid eyes on it. A sprawling mass of markets, lanes and indistinguishable buildings given the poor light, such a maze would be easy to lose pursuers in. If, or when, the defences fail this will be the new no-mans land.

To the West you can see the glow of flames, an indication of where your fellow Kreigstrom Squads were supposed to be leading the final push. Maybe the flames are from a breach in the walls and you have allies within the city already… or maybe the assault was repelled and it’s your own side’s siege towers that are alight. That’s where the fighting will be thickest, at least until everything literally goes to Below. The squad of Neumunster Halberdiers charging towards you won’t be the only one between you and there.

To the East, the Imperial Palace looms over the city like a fat baker over a particularly large cake. It’s only a little illuminated, given the disturbing lack of a moon which was certainly present and ¾ full not 30 minutes ago, but given the size of it it’s hard to miss. Within resides the Imperial Family, the Treasury, Menagerie and whatever else it is that royalty whacks in all their spare rooms. All that stands between you and all that loot is whatever skeleton crew of palace guard they can spare… and the other squad of Neumunster Halberdiers coming this way.

So far, so good. You’re the bloody 7th Kriegstrom Shock-Troops after all, the meanest and leanest Corp of a company that prides itself on meanliness and leanliness. You have biggest swords, you have thickest armour, you… well really that’s it but it generally gets the job done. Being where you are, your squad alone in the heart of the Sarsburg South, would be standard fare really. So it isn’t the 20 or so Neumunster Halberdiers bearing down on your flanks that has you breaking out in a sweat and Trooper Schuster cussing you out, it’s the Daemon Gate rapidly forming directly behind you.

-----------------------------------------------

>Run North, deeper into the city. Sure, it’s easy to get lost in but it’s not here and there’s no Neumunster squad between you and that direction. Deciding on a specific destination can come later, being -not here- is more important right now.
>Push West, towards the breach. The Lieutenant should have broken through by now. It will be utter carnage even before all Below breaks loose, but if you can link up with your own forces…
>Push East, the majority of the Neumunster forces will be where the fighting is. Besides, the Palace will be warded and have consecrated ground with all those Saints running around. And Daemons hate that stuff …right?

East it is. You’re not a fool, seizing the palace is going to take a lot more than just your squad. But without a doubt it will be the safest place to sneak into when all Below breaks loose. And if you could pinch even one bag of the stuff they leave just lying around in a palace… that sort of money could keep Trooper Durvano whoring, drinking and gambling non-stop for a month.

It might be ironic to complain given that you’re employed to fight alongside an undead host, but daemons are a different matter. As unnatural and malicious as the Necromancer can be, at least he can control his evil horde. What his crazy sister Superior Syker has done is a whole different bag of bones. A direct link between this world and the bottomless Below where, according to Page #137, the Dark Father himself was imprisoned. The things that dwell there are without number, don’t conform to the same existential laws that you do, and on the whole consider your face extremely edible. You’ve seen it all before at Far Sut Rus.

The wards that prevent anyone getting in or out of the city until sunrise is new, and entirely unwelcome given that you’re on the wrong side of said impenetrable barrier. It’s one thing to unleash a catastrophic mess like this in a confined area like a city, collateral aside, but trapping your own side in with it? You find the idea of excavating Superior Syka’s skull more attractive by the second, sadly her affinity for Magik makes that scenario little more than a happy daydream. Speaking of which, the crazy bitch mentioned that her and the other cultists were warded from any daemonic attention. Nabbing some of the hooded little pricks huddled around the gatehouse might come in handy, but it would mean some of your squad members would have to drag them along rather than actively contribute to the fighting.

You don’t have time, you’re no sorcerer but you can tell it’s a matter of seconds until the summoning is complete. Distance is a better defence against what is coming than a shifty looking cultist that the daemons won’t eat. First things first, those Neumunster Halberdiers.
“Right, this it.” Activating your Cloak of Command (or Shouty Shroud as you’ve heard Schuster call it behind your back) you bellow at your squaddies “2ND SQUAD FORM RANKS AND ADVANCE, BLACKGUARDS ON THE LEFT, LANCER ON THE RIGHT. MOVE IT!”

As you charge towards the squad appraching from the west you notice that these lot look pretty worn, spotting a few bandages and damaged equipment. While you and the other Mercs have been resting easily these past couple of days, the Neumunster forces have been run ragged pushing back Undead attacks for days now.

That should make this all the more easier.

For 10 years you've fought for gold, and for the man fighting beside. Your opponent is more than that, he's fighting for his home, his family and his city. It's that kind of frantic desperation in his swings that forces you back, earning you a slice into your shoulder and a cut above your eye.

His men fight just as valiantly, but they are tired and yours are fresh. One by one they fall until little more than half their number remain.

Kinda hard to say, because while bad things happen those are the results of a specific civil war, and there's no dark undercurrent overhanging the world at large, and it appears to mostly be a medieval British isles expy. That said there is some dark magic, and signs of the 'others' coming to bring doom to the setting so idunno. The books are essential a redubbed war of the roses plot, and the setting isn't craptastic for all living there so Imma give a tentative no.

His men dead or dying all around him, the grizzled Sergeant tears his gaze away from the Hell Gate back to you in horror.

“What have you done?” is all he has time to say before you bring up your flintlock pistol and fire it directly into his face.

The bullet tears apart the left side of his skull, sending him writhing on the floor clutching the ruinous damage. He doesn't die quickly enough for Trooper Durvano's liking, who slips a dagger under and up his throat to quicken it along.

From the screams coming behind you it seems the other squad of Halberdiers have met with whatever is coming out from Below. You've wasted too much time, damn that Free Alliance courage, and already some of the... things... are heading your way.

DnD supplement has a few non-humans, but they're not so fantastical. Most of the book focuses on humans, and their unique combat system. It's designed to abstract formation fighting into something that can be resolved with d20s, and it's modular to characteristics so you can have mermen with tridents or regular men with halberds. My favorite part of the system is that it accounts for veterancy and focuses on a formation being broken and routed, not everyone getting killed.

Obviously for these squad based actions like in this thread, it mostly comes down to the last man. But formations of hundreds it's more about when the tide turns and folks run for it.

Without further ado...

"Don't bother fighting." You bark at your comrades "Just run. Hopefully they'll stick around and feast on these stubborn bastards."

It doesn't take much encourage to convince your men to get moving. And leaving the daemons to feast on the corpses seems like a good idea.

Unfortunately, it doesn't work. The daemons scurry right over the scattered Neumunster dead without so much as even a taste-test. They're gaining on you and fast, some quite literally nipping at the heels.

You're saved when an unfortunate Neumunster elder in a nightgown comes doddling out of his house as your squad rushes by.

"What in blue-blazes is the meaning of all this racket? Has the city fal-OH AAIIE"

He disappears under a flurry of too many limbs and teeth, buying you the time you need to distance yourself from the flood of creatures. His sacrifice will be remembered.

Ya know, QM, I would like to really thank you. I always had problems running quests and taking part in quests on /tg/ because, I thought I was partaking in a problem. I know the beginnings of quests, starting on /jp/, then coming to /tg/ and /a/. All boards basically had their own board specific quests. Then Moot brought the hammer down, put quests on /tg/, called it a day. Why? Because Moot goes to /a/ and /jp/, and there was a lot of quests there. Moot doesn't go to /tg/. So all of a sudden we got this flood of non-/tg/ quests. This is when people start going "quests are cancer!", because of all the anime and waifu quests, making it hard to really enjoy those good /tg/ quests.

Well, I say bravo you to you sir. I can enjoy quests unapologetically on their own board and this is a quest with quite a lot of thought and work put into it. 10/10 thumbs up.

You're about halfway to the Palace. And from the sound of things, the daemon horde is rapidly spreading throughout the city.

Locked doors and windows prove to be little protection against the bigger creatures, and anyone running in the street is quickly set upon by the smaller ones. Soon all of Sarsburg will be like this.

------------------------

>Go straight for the main bridge to the palace, every minute you're in there is a minute you're not out here. Leave it too long and the whole entry will be blocked by refugees once they clue on to what's happening.

That puts more bodies on the streets to buy us time.

These daemons can probably see through walls, seeming as they're randomly entering foreign structures and attacking folks. And that they can tell the difference between living and dead. As for the Neumunsters, are they SERIOUSLY going to stop in the middle of this shit, and try to stop us? Either way, we need to buy time and we're already not going to the main gate.

You avoid the glaringly obvious main entrance to the Imperial Palace, sticking to the side streets and alleyways as your circle the grounds looking for a way in. After all, there's no point making it to the Palace if you can't get in. That and they don't keep the real expensive stuff near the entrance anyway.

You stay quiet, trying to avoid unwanted (which is to say any) attention. You're not White Hand Assassins, the armour and gear of the Kreigstrom isn't designed with stealth in mind. But if your clanking does wake anyone up, they put it down to another squad of Neumunster soldiers, not the enemy.

Those you run past will have no warning, no notion of what's coming your way. You can already hear it behind you. The screams of families being woken from their sleep and slaughtered in their beds. It will haunt you, but you will take waking up in a cold sweat from nightmares over never waking up again every time.

Avoiding the main streets, and with no warm bodies between you and the daemons to distract the majority of them, you can see a lot of them overtake you.

Already up ahead near one of the side-entrances you hear fighting, and there's no way your forces have penetrated this far into the city already.

Ahead of you, at the entrance to the Palace Gardens, a warrior is making a last stand. Surrounded on all sides by those fast daemon-dogs, she wields a bastard sword the colour of moonlight. Her armour identifies her as a member of the Heigelen Guard, probably a minor saint given the Captain markings and pale white hair.

Maybe that's why every daemon-dog she strikes actually stays down, unable to put themselves back together as they usually do, and why she's still alive while the Neumunster soldiers lying around her are definitely not.

She's hot too, more's the pity. Short hair, if you're into that kind of thing. You should know better after Kiranova, but you've always had a thing for women that could potentially beat your ass in a fair fight. Not that you ever fight fair.

Speaking of which, she has her back turned to you.

You did well. So well in fact that the Saint doesn't yet realise you aren't on the same side.

--------------------------------
"I'll take god-botherers over the Below any day. At them, lads!"

Charging past the struggling warrior you slice away one of the hounds clawing at her leg-plate as the rest of your fellows dive into the melee.

Although your blades can't kill the daemon-dogs, you and your squaddies swiftly hack them up efficiently enough for the Heigelen Saint to finish them off before they can reform with her blessed sword.

Wiping the gleaming bright blade on her tabard (which you can't help but realise it must be awful for any task requiring stealth), she turns to you and your comrades with a smile.

"I thank you friends, truly I did not expect to live out the minute. The Emperor thanks you for your courage and strength of arms. With more men and women like you, I don't doubt that our great nation will survive these trying times."

She offers you her hand in a soldiers embrace, grinning widely.

"In fact I'll recommend you to the Crown-Prince personally for a meritorious award. Tell me, to whom do I owe the honour?"

"Er..."

“Corporal Adam ‘Prince’, Mercenary Contingent. Pleasure to make your acquaintance, ma’am. Everything’s gone to Below out there, we were just heading to the only relative safety around, don’t think that warrants a medal. Speaking of which, my lads and I would be much happier continuing this talk inside.”

The Saint’s grin tightens a little, but she shakes your hand all the same. “Honesty is a virtue every bit as important as Courage, Corporal. I thank you all the same. I am Captain Elia von Harti, Saint of Stuttgart Chapel, and deeply in your debt. However, the Heigelen Guard are under strict orders to let no one but myself back through this way. The way has been shut and only I possess the key to open. I fear I can’t offer you sanctuary until I’ve completed my mission.”

Figures there would be some complication. “And that mission is?”

Her genuine, disgustingly sincere smile returns, probably assuming you wish to lend every assistance in her quest.

“The State Orphanage is a few streets away from here. It lacks any protective wards, and these creatures have no mercy in their black hearts for the innocent or the young. My men and I were to escort them back to the safety of the Palace walls.”

Of course she’s on a special mission to save innocents. Even over the stench of the rapidly dissolving daemon-dogs you can smell the goodness coming off of her, a faint tinge of puppies and… homemade cooking. And, thinking you’re on the same side, she’s just told you she possesses the only key through to this entrance into the palace.

Tears begin to form in the battle-hardened Saint’s eyes, turning to the others out of some desperate hope that you’re wrong. “B-b-but… Annie and the girls?”

“I’m sorry, ma’am.” Lancer ‘Jack’ Marcus answers, helmet held solemnly over heart.

“Sister Helga?”

“Ooh arr, damn shame that.” Trooper Durvano wipes away a fake tear with a sniff.

“Eric and the Lucky Seven?”

“Not so lucky and definitely fewer than seven now.” Trooper Smiles-at-Dice grumbles.

“Little One-legged Ollie?”

“Didn’t get very far.” Quips Trooper Schuster.

“Jessica, with the gap teeth?”

“I am please to be bringing to you this sad news, Sadiq-Captain.” Trooper Belhamun nods emphatically.

“Wha-… wh-what about Michael? He was always so sweet.”

“Alas, nothing could be done, mon ami.” Smooth talker, that Pietre Verdun.

“…L-Liam?”

“…” Mask, of course.

>You guys specifically chose the Neumunster State Orphan background, it's why you have the Clever trait.

Holy shit. I didn't know. Oh my god. That's genius.

Also I was just about to ask if we could see more reaction from the Squad, and this is pretty brilliant.

Wow we're horrible.

This is some dark (but oddly funny) stuff right here.

Can't we cheer her up? It's not your fault, Little Saint! Here, have a good dicking.

It's too much for the poor little saint. Her flow of tears becomes a flood as she sinks to her knees bawling.

A few of the less dickish squaddies are giving you slightly disapproving looks.

"Damn, boss. That was ice cold." Trooper Schuster leans over and whispers.

"Well?" Lancer 'Jack' gestures questioningly at you.

"...Well what?"

"Comfort the poor woman, you ingrate!" You can practically see his beard twitching in disapproval.

Even Kid is looking at you like you kicked a puppy, and they owe you their life.

What were the rules regarding adding your own suggestions? I don't wanna be a dick if you don't like em.

Pretty much, obviously the whole thing is morally grey. But I'd like to see whether you're leaning more to a black-hearted villain time or a cynical veteran with a soft side.

>>39428
We're still saving our own asses in exchange for the lives of a bunch of orphans either way.
More sentimental vs objective focused.

+ BLACK HEART POINTS
In your mind this makes you about even for putting your neck out for Kid.
-------------------------------------------------

Yes, yes all very sad. But it’s the sorry truth (or will be in soon enough), and you really want to get inside those warded walls now. More and more of the city is on fire and the screams are growing closer by the minute. Time to get going.

"There, there, Captain. Let's get you inside." You wrap one arm around the tearful knight as you get her up.

“Y-yes… but those poor children.” The distraught Captain continues to sob into your shoulder as you guide her through the Palace Gardens. Her hands are shaking with each snivel as she unsheathe's her magik sword and slides it into an unremarkable side pillar covered in vines.

“Captain von Harti, you’re back! And who are… these?” A cautious Heigelen Guard peers out of the opening passageway, quite certain you are not the orphans she set out to rescue.

“It’s alright, Brendan, they’re with me.” Captain von Harti mutters dejectedly as she leads you inside. “We were too late…”

Truly magnificent last words
>>
>>39599
Did op die, like i'm sorry Jesus I didn't mean it you write really well and I think you should write a book
>>
>>39599
Inside is… extravagant. Ignoring the suspicious glances the other Heigelen Guard are throwing at your mix-matched and ethnically diverse squad, you are led into the West Wing Ballroom. All the wealth and power of the wealthiest and most powerful nation in the known world in one place… and this is just one room. It’s all very fancy and enchanting, if you can ignore the sobbing Saint Elia slumped in a chair in the corner.

Your fellow squad members can’t help but gawk at their surroundings. You can see Trooper Vendis Durvano’s eyes popping into Gelt coins, you can hear the ex-pirate's heavy breathing from here. The Wildborn Smiles-at-Dice seems to be trying to count the jewels on the chandeliers, which is going to take a while. Lancer ‘Jack’ has patriotic tears in his eyes as he gazes at a portrait of some Emperor or other, quite ironic given that he was killing his own countrymen a moment ago. Beside him Trooper Kid is eyeing the silverware, bless his(or her) heart.

Mask doesn’t seem impressed. Not that you could tell when he’s impressed, terrified, joyful or slightly perturbed in any case. Even Pietre Verdun is treading softly, and you are dead certain the renegade Chevalisse Knight was born with a silver spoon is his mouth.

“Boss… I don’t know about this. I ain’t never been nowhere this fancy.” Trooper Caroline Schuster is shuffling around nervously, self-consciously trying to cover her burn scars with her left hand.

“Schuster it’s fine besides we-… Trooper, what are you doing? Put those back on.” You shake your head as Nissar Belhamun stops taking off his boots.

Finally, you’re inside the Imperial Palace. The seat of Neumunster power, the heart of the strongest member of the Free Alliance. You’re safe. Sort of. For now.

>[END]

I haven’t eaten since breakfast, I’m tired and my bros are keen to watch the new game of thrones. We’ll pick this up again next week, fellas. I thank you for the warm welcome back.

Alright QM and everyone else.

What we're all ignoring is the fact there is our army and their army, and our army ain't gonna rush to the defense of the city getting eaten by daemons. We are in the one place they can't reach, and no one knows we're here.

Let's play it extra safe. Let's buy our time, stick around as dutiful mercenaries of the Neumunster crown, wait for an opportunity. We can also open up the gate when the daemons are gone, and our army comes through. We can't take the palace ourselves, but we make it a helluva lot easier for our guys.

And, say, perchance, when our army is coming through. Where are the defenders gonna go? To the Royal family...not the treasury.

Fuck Dragons we're not protagonists. Those lizard-fucks won't care what we wanted for our birthdays.
>>
>>40172
I say we take hostages, demand gold, the fastest horses or any animals that can let us just Fucking rip ass outta there, the gold, the Saint, and not least of all the best weapons
