Previously, you did your best to try and settle things with Aash but were interrupted by a sudden move to change boards! Also Quedesh might be invading.

You wince as the walls rattle and shake once more. Zukhdeep throws his hands up in a gesture of helplessness as you, Zigzag and the albino homunculus wait outside. It’s only been a few minutes since you woke Aashenpreet, enough time to move her to a more structurally sound house. And unfortunately, more than enough time for her to properly sober up and realize what she’s done.
Her screeching and wailing is barely muffled by the wall separating the two of you and you can barely stand to hear it.

You remember what she told you shortly before she started throwing this fit. Was that true? Is it true that once she finally gets past this, she’ll have forgiven you?

“This is temporary,” Zukhdeep says in response to your expression. “Probably.”

And that’s all well and good but you can’t be expected to just stay out here and listen to all of it! You start to pace forward and back along the deserted hallway as you try and come to a decision. What should you do?

You’re still pondering this when you feel something else suddenly stuff itself inside your head. You retch and sink to your knees for a moment as you feel a presence within your mind. It reminds you of a spirit’s mental cold but where spirits are cold and sterile, this is hot and sticky and suffocating.
The presence of something unbelievably foul.

“Are you dying again Cennen?”
Zigzag actually looks concerned.

“Hold on,” you say. “There’s something her-”

You fall silent as words push themselves in your mind.

CENNEN!

Your brand feels as if it is throbbing in your hand as waves of heat radiate from it.

Where the fuck are you? I hope you’re not wasting time on bullshit. Get over here to the docks NOW

The presence uncoils itself from around you and retreats back into your brand as the heat fades. Your Queen has spoken and she demands your presence.

That’s...new.

>You’ll go but not before you help Aashenpreet!

Bring Hom with us, get Eva to grab Elle and Zigzag and go to Aash to start a "snake ladies traumatized by Cennen support group".

But seriously get them to go be available to listen to Aash and how she's handling the experience.

ALTERNATE PLAN

> Quickly brew a warmth potion to comfort Aash and then bounce to Hiss asap
>>
>>33817
She doesn't particularly like the effects of heat
>>
>See if you can reply using the brand somehow.
>You’ll go but you’ll take a circuitous route so you can pick up your homunculi first.

Is this the new feature of the brand that Hiss had been so excited about? But then why wouldn't she have just told you about it? And more importantly, can you reply back?

You grit your teeth and focus on the brand as best you can as you try and will your thoughts across the thread of Art that binds the two of you together.
When that doesn't work you try praying to it and then speaking out loud.
"Hiss? Can you hear me? Hiss?"

But alas, the only response you get is from Zigzag.
"...Hiss isn't here."
She remains looking faintly concerned.

Okay so sending information back along the brand might be impossible. Either that or there's something here you're missing.
"Sorry Zig, Hiss is calling. I've got to go see her."

"I didn't hear anything!"

Not that you need to visit Hiss immediately however. You should circle around, try and pick up your homunculi and then go down to the docks.

That's what you try to do anyway. Your feet seem to have a different plan in mind! The moment you walk out the door they pivot and start marching you straight towards the docks.

>Roll a 1d100 to resist Hiss' royal command. As usual, accepting the best of the first three.

You know what? No! You don't have to do what Hiss tells you to do just because she can speak inside your head and possesses a vaguely defined compelling voice. The two of you are partners in this and that means you get to make your own decisions.

You spin on the spot and probably look like a fool as you turn back towards the wall. Time to find those homunculi!

"Cennen?"
Zigzag is sitting at the doorway watching you.
"Should I just stay here or...?"

"She'll probably just want someone to listen to her, and if it gets too much remind her that if forgiveness is possible let for me then it definitely is for her. I mean, we can't undo our mistakes but we can choose to try and do better. But I gotta go."

If Hiss is pissy about us grabbing the homunculi just remind her that they're just like extra weapons as well. If she gets piss about Aash, we'll wouldn't it be something if she could throw the priesthood into disarray with her horrifying truths?

And then we establish Hiss as the rightful ruler in the war against the creator to protect this irritating pearl that is our world from dissolution.

"Nah, I'd prefer it if you just stayed here and helped Aash. She probably just wants someone to talk to her and you're a good listener."

"I am?"

"Sure? Just tell her that while we can't undo our past mistakes we can always choose to do better or something. Now I really have to go."

"Okay, bye Cennen! I hope you don't die."

"Yeah same. Bye Ziggy."

By the time you reach the wall it would appear that all of the defenders have fled. The only people still here are living corpses and a scattered group of beautiful women you can only assume are snakes.
They shout your name as you pass. You've gotten a lot more popular with them lately ever since the Danger Flask incident.

You find Hom and Eva sitting by the wall away from everyone else and accompanied only by Blue. The snake appears to be...trying to braid Eva's hair?
She jumps back when she sees you approach.
"Iwasn'tdoinganythingtoherIswearpleasedon'tgrabmeagain!"

You decide to ignore Blue for now and speak directly to your homunculi.
"Pack up, Hiss wants us by the docks."

And just as you speak, you feel your brand begin to throb once more as her presence sweeps into your head.

CENNEN! If you aren't here real soon you're going to be sleeping by yourself for the rest of your natural life!

A short moment passes and then she returns.

Which won't be very long!

"And we have to go right now," you add.

The three of you leave Blue behind and head into the city. Now you just need to make your way to the docks before His-

If I don't see you in the next five minutes I'm going to start telling you to drink your most humiliating potion repeatedly until you have to do it,.

>Use Skinshedder

"Hold on guys, Hiss is starting to get impatient. We need to pick up the pace so grab on!"
You pull a Skinshedder vial from your pack and drink it, doing your best to think about wolves. Fast wolves. Dogs. Definitely not snakes though. Not snakes

The alchemical transformation is successful and you take to the streets in the form a giant wolf...wolf-thing. You are practically a wolf. The fact that you have scales doesn't mean anything.

You gallop down the streets, leaping from rooftop to rooftop and thoroughly scare the shit out of everyone who sees you. If anyone disbelieved the tales of the Witch Queen before they sure don't now.

And as you approach the docks you see what has Hiss so worried. There are black ships on the horizon. Dozens of them!
You've seen their like before. Quedesh.

Maybe tipping their most sacred shrine over was not as consequence-free as you had been lead to believe.

You skid onto the docks, Hom and Eva jumping off your scaled back as you approach your Queen. Hiss wrinkles her nose at you while Orange waves.
It's not just her entourage that's here however. The docks are filled with regular soldiers, most of which are now pointing their spears and bows at you.

"What is the meaning of this?"
It's an older man in a very fancy uniform.

"Did you think all of my servants wore human shapes?," Hiss replies. Her tone is cold and the man shrinks back. She marches over to you as you shake off your form and retake humanity.
"Cennen, that one might be a little too ugly. Even for you."

"Thanks. What's going on? Is Quedesh invading?"

Hiss leans in close.
"Have you seen Oster anywhere?"

"No. Have you?"

"No. But he killed the King. So in light of the current chaos and...that," she motions at the black fleet. "The humans have called for a brief truce."

"Is..Is Oster alive?"

Hiss looks troubled.
"I don't know. They say he was last seen to be heavily wounded. There's a good chance that he died from his wounds."

Everything seems to blur for just a moment.
"No. That can't be right. Oster can't be dead."

"Snap out of it Cennen! And keep your voice down, we're in front of the humans. Now, pass me a Farsight brew."

"Uh, I don't have one."

"Then make one. I don't want to have to ask the human for his spyglass."

You motion towards Eva and she starts brewing it immediately.
"What are we going to do about all of this?"

"I don't know," Hiss replied. "We need more information. But Quedesh aside, I have been presented with a fine opportunity."
She eyes the general hungrily.

So that's it. Even as Quedesh approaches, Hiss is planning on using this as a chance to eat and subvert what's left of the leadership of Taldenral.

>Let her do so. It would be best with her in charge.

>"Hiss, shouldn't you wait until this danger has passed?"

>"Why did you need me here so urgently anyway?"

>Ask her about the brand.

SURPRISE, our long national nightmare is over already! Whatever the hell 'congestion' is on an internet/phone line cleared up by the time I got home. Magic? No idea.
Thankfully I had this post saved on Notepad.

>"Hiss, shouldn't you wait until this danger has passed?"
>"Why did you need me here so urgently anyway?"

You put your hand on Hiss' shoulder.
"Maybe you should wait until the current danger has passed," you whisper. "Now what was so urgent that you needed me so quickly? Was it really just the Farsight Brew?"

"Is it really so shocking that I'd want you by my side?"

"Well no but yes, I mean it's flattering..."

"And do I need a reason to call a servant?"

"No but-"

"Then give me the Farsight Brew."

Eva passes a bottle to both you and Hiss and she drinks it immediately, pulling you closer to her as she does so.
"And besides," she whispers. "Maybe I just find your presence to be a comfort. Ever think of that?"

"You could stand to be a little less demanding."

"I'm the Queen, Cennen. Demanding is what I do. Now drink this."

You down the Farsight and watch as the fleet springs into proper view right before your eyes. That is a lot of ships. Shit. You thought there were dozens? There has to be at least a hundred!
All of them are carved from that queer black wood and they come in a huge variety of shapes and sizes. Some of them are small and shallowly built while others are far larger than any proper human ship.

And at the far back of the fleet are three ships that are simply enormous, dwarfing every other ship by at least a hundred feet. They are fat and broad and their decks are dominated by huge pole-like shapes hidden beneath immense wraps of cloth. Are those the masts?

And worse, scurrying around on the decks you see not only humans but giants. Many of them twice the size of a regular human, gigantic men and women carrying loads that are almost the same size as they are.

There are hundreds of constrictors.

"I didn't know they had so many..." you breathe.

"Fool," Hiss replies. "These are just the cast-offs. The impertinent and disposable young. The Invisible Courts send their children to war in their stead. We could kill every constrictor there and Quedesh wouldn't even feel it."

"Then this isn't an imperial invasion fleet?"

Hiss shrugs.
"It might be. But what we see here can't be more than just a few Raja's worth of forces. This is either a private endeavour or Quedesh doesn't think much of us."

"How can you be sure?"

"Else this force would be hundreds of times bigger."

"Good to know."

And that's when you spot the small row-boat making its way from the closest ship. You extend your vision and focus upon it to a see three men. Two of those men are garbed in the familiar armour of Ishmin soldiers while the man sitting between them is wearing a well-decorated and embroidered robe with a polished breast-plate and armoured skirt sitting over the top of it.
1/2
>>
>>36964
He's carrying his helmet rather than wear it, exposing his face in a gesture of confidence.

"A messenger?," the human general says. "Are these really the Quedeshi? Let them come! We must negotiate!"

"It looks like a human," you whisper to Hiss.

"So do I," she mutters. "But what if it's her?"

You know exactly who she's talking about. If one of those men is Tanni in disguise then the moment you let them onto the shore peacefully might already be the moment you lose the war.

>Nonsense. We need to hear what they have to say.

>Open fire on them before they can make a landing.

Fortunately you have an easy way to detect this. You've got to stop forgetting about Soulsight. You let your Farsight fade as they get closer and drink the bottle of Soulsight.
It hurts your head but it lets you know that all three men are indeed quite human.

"They're safe."

"I still don't trust it," Hiss says. "Don't let them on shore."

The general looks at her uncertainly.
"Don't tell me you actually believe in the tales of the Witchlands?"

"Ahem?"
Hiss motions to herself, the fucking Witch Queen.
"I believe I am the authority on these matters, am I not? Don't let them make the shore."

The general grumbles but seems to bow to Hiss' authority on this matter. These days it's hard for anyone not to.
"Get a boat up, we'll go and meet them midway. Diplomatic."

"Go with them Cennen."

"Pardon?"

"I've just appointed you Royal Emissary."

"Can't you just go yourself. Whatever trick they have, it can't possibly hurt you."

>Do as she says and get on the boat.

You take your pack and join the other three men piling into the dinghy as people back on the docks do their best to signal to the incoming Quedeshi that you intend to meet them halfway.

You can't help but notice how everyone else in the boat with you is staring at you with naked hatred.
"Hello?"

One of them spits at your feet but the others remain silent as they start to steer you out there.
And why wouldn't they hate you? How many people in Taldenral have already died because of you and Hiss? You can only thank providence that they don't know Hiss isn't even human at all. They don't yet know the true depths of your betrayal.

You're a few hundred feet from the docks when you come to a stop, your little boat pulling up and anchoring beside the Quedeshi rowboat. Two tiny insignificant vessels and yet upon which the future of thousands may be decided.

"Salutations," the robed man says. His Avling is near perfect. He was probably taught by a snake.
"My name is Namjott. I am the acting commander of the Aasharahatastra-adi TiQesh."

"Pardon?"

He chuckles.
"My apologies. The Punitive Force of Destruction Aimed By Three Holy Rulers Upon The Outsiders For Their Crimes."

You all just stare at him.
"It does not translate well into your barbaric tongue."

"But we haven't done anything wrong," one of the men next to you says. "Teleran has had nothing to do with the Witchlands."

"You have defiled a holy place worth more than the blood of every single pale-skinned man, woman and child. And indeed, even if that were all to be collected for the Utmost Maharajah to sup upon it would not be enough. This is the punitive force assembled by three Scaled Lords whose names are too holy to be spoken in such circumstances and they have come to mete out justice."
He pauses for a moment as if to give you time to process it.
"Fortunately Aashimid is ever-merciful and it is enough for the Invisible to know that you now have been humbled and know your place. So I have come with an offer of peace."

He tosses a long wooden box from his boat to yours and one of the King's men catches it and pulls it open to find a beautifully decorated and illustrated scroll. Too bad the subject matter of those illustrations are so gruesome.

"This is absurd!"
"Absolutely not!"
"We are innocent of this crime!"
"Northern dog!"

You look over their shoulder and scan the document in question, drawn up in perfect Teln script.

In short, they seem to be demanding the following conditions:
First, Teleran must renounce their independence and become a vassal satrapy of Quedesh. You will be permitted to rule and act as always but should any of the holy rulers of Quedesh ask, Teleran must provide.

Secondly, a yearly tax must be paid in gold, goods and blood. Yes, blood. Part of the tax demands that a hundred humans be surrendered yearly for shipment to Quedesh until forgiveness has been deemed to have been earned.

Namjott just strokes his beard.
"None of your words mean anything. There is only one representative here that matters."

Everyone turns to you.

We're her appointed representative and any form of surrender is obviously not an option. We can make this decision ourselves.

I don't really see how we could stall effectively in order to give hiss time to do something. We have other brews to bring the biters physical stature on par with the constrictors, not to mention venom has been proven very useful against snakes. Honestly I'm just really confident and I've always hated Quedesh so I'm being hasty. I still choose this.

>"Absolutely not."

Nah, Hiss might be willing to part with a few human lives but when that involves actually bowing down to someone else? Or admitting defeat? Never.
She'd take your head if you agreed.

You shake your head and laugh.
"You must think us fools if we would agree to such shit. Do you really think we'd surrender to the dregs of Quedesh?"

Namjott sneers.
"These dregs could conquer your entire nation."

"So," one of the other men says. "What happens if we don't agree?"

Namjott looks at him as if he was an idiot.
"Punitive destruction. Your nation and your snakes shall be humbled and brought to heel. A century from now, your descendants will thank me."

"Nonsense!"
"Yeah!"
The King's men are looking on you a bit more warmly now that that they know you aren't going to sell them out.

The Quedeshi nods.
"A shame. I shall relay this message to the fleet."

Is there anything else you want to add?

>"You can't possibly conquer the entire island with just a single fleet."

"Oi!"

"Yes?"

"And how exactly do you expect to conquer the entire island with just a single fleet? Do you not understand how large Teleran is? My Queen will humble you before her!"

He laughs as his boat starts to row back towards the fleet.
"I don't think it is I who lack the proper comprehension of scale here."

"You don't even have any alchemists!"

"No but we've brought the next best things. Mathematicians."

And with that he is gone and the rest of you are rowing back to the shore. The other men clap you on the back.
"Good on ya mate."
"Who do those cunts think they are?"
"What's a mathematician?"

As you reach the shore the men present the scroll first to Lord Ensborough and then to Hiss. The general spits upon it and Hiss laughs before taking it from his grasp and ripping it into shreds.
"They seem to have mistaken me for someone who bows!"

Cheers rise up from the assorted snakes and even from the defenders of Taldenral. Hiss seems to be endearing herself to them now that they are no longer in open war.
Typical.

"You did excellent Cennen, exactly what I would have said. Only I probably would have killed that man as well. Maybe next time."

"Watch out!," the call comes down. "The ships are coming in!"

"Let them," the general bellows. "Our seaborne defences still hold strong! Ready the trebuchets!"

You watch as soldiers and watchmen alike run to do his bidding, his orders echoing down the line as weapons are armed all along the harbour walls.
"We still have plenty of alchemical projectiles left," the general boasts to Hiss.

"Then what's stopping you? Open fire!"

"They aren't in range yet. But the moment they are, they'll regret ever having come here!"

Minutes pass agonizingly as the ships edge closer and closer.

"Are they in range yet?"

"No! Not yet!"

"Wait for it!"

"Wait for iiiiiit!"

"Hold up! What's that!"

Hiss rips the spyglass from the general's hands and peers out.
"We may have a problem."

Those three huge and oddly-shaped ships at the back are moving. The shrouded contraptions sitting atop their decks are revealed as the gigantic covers are pulled away and retracted.

You don't understand what they are at first. Each of the three ships carries three enormous wooden poles atop them, each one tall enough to be mistaken for enormous masts. At the base of the poles seems to be a mess of gears and pulleys and at the top...a giant counter-balance.

"What?"

And then behind each titanic structure you see them, gigantic basket-arms being fixed and pulled into place.

"Incoming!"

The giant trebuchets all spring into action one after another, the huge ships they're mounted on visibly swaying from the recoil.

"Return fire!"

"We can't! They're still out of range of our own trebuchets!"

"Those things are huge! There's no way anyone could fire them!"

Seven of the stones kick up spray as they land harmlessly in the ocean before you but two of them find their mark, arcing high into the city.

You take the spyglass from Hiss and behold the machines already re-arming. Gigantic wooden contraptions and gears far too large for any human arm to even hope to move are easily pulled into place by gangs of constrictors, brown-skinned giants levering the absurd mechanisms back into place.
And running beneath their feet are people who might be even more dangerous. Ordinary humans, finely dressed and unarmed. Instead of swords and spears they carry spyglasses and abacuses and long scrolls of calculations.
At their direction, the constrictors push the trebuchets into new positions and lock the gears in different places.

"They're calibrating their aim," you tell Hiss as you hand it back.

"And what are we going to do about it?"

"I don't know! Those things can fire at us all day from outside of any reasonable range!"

The next volley goes off and this time they all hit, huge stones smashing through houses and splintering streets. One of them strikes the harbour wall and sends a trebuchet and its crew toppling into the water.

"Still," Hiss says. "If they're just going to toss stones at us then it's not that much of issue. We can survive that and they'll run out soon."

The third volley springs into action and this time you spot a difference in the missiles. Instead of rocks some of the payloads being sent into the city are collections of wooden boxes all lashed together into a single projectile.

"What are those? I thought they didn't have alchemists!"

"How should I know?"

But if it is alchemical...you wince and plug your ears in readiness from the explosion as the strange projectile strikes a few streets down. But nothing happens.
Was it a failure?

"What was that supposed to be?"

They must be ishmin. Send any snakes with strong scales to kill them immediately. Those with gaseous venom would be particularly useful. Alchemists could deal with them too. I thought it was snakes but this anon is probably right.
On the matter of the fleet I wonder if we can make a rumple skin for wood and then make it alchemically gaseous, I don't think we have the time to come up with it though ( also if the brew persists and blows inland that could be bad )

More than explosives, I think something like tar would be better: a floating sticky substance that can burn even in water. It would have a greater area of effect thant individual explosives and can be deployed using the sea current, so their superior range would stop being an issue.
Or we could just make a relly big bomb instead, though that still leaves the deployment

we should probably gather the master alchemists with us so that we can pool their knowledge of brews to expand our options.

"Hom! Eva! Start brewing...anti-ship stuff! Explosives! Fires! Go nuts!"
Damn it. You've done so much stuff with plant-based alchemy, why didn't it ever occur to you to make something that helped destroy dead wood?

"Hiss, we need to counter-attack."
You have a really bad feeling about whatever was in these boxes.

Hiss nods.
"Agreed. General! Send some scouts to report on the damage!"

The general snaps to and obeys her order immediately. Hiss smirks.

>Send out yourself and a force of aquatic snakes to place underwater mines.
>Ask the general to muster the College

"General! Sorry, I don't think I got your name. Anyway, you have to mobilize the Potions College!"

"What do you think I've been doing against you?"

"Well uh, can you do it more?"

He sighs but he doesn't refute you, sending off more orders down the line as you sit down your homunculi.
"I have a plan but we need Snakebreakers. A lot of Snakebreakers. We're gonna need a reagent donor!"

"Here, take mine."
You don't recognize the snake who volunteers, a perky blonde right from the pages of your old fashion catalogue.
You don't turn her down however and she is soon exceedingly uncomfortable as you, Eva and Hom pick her down for hair and blood.

Meanwhile Hiss is busy organizing her people, mustering all the snakes with aquatic Art.

"Bugs!"
You turn around as the general's scouts come rushing back.
"The boxes are full of little monster bugs! They're everywhere and they're eating people alive!"

Ishmin. Shit.
You still remember what Aashenpreet once told you. A single Ishmin Trap can devour an entire city if left unchecked. These have probably been damaged a lot by the fall but still!

They really haven't come to conquer.

Hiss just sighs.
"Everyone who can spit! Get over there and hide beyond those with scales!"

Even more snakes depart to hold back the Ishmin nests. You are becoming increasingly aware of just how few snakes are there to actually hold the line should the fleet reach the shore.

"Hiss, now that we think about it, we might need some snakes to stay behind here in case they att-"

"No," Hiss says firmly as more rocks rain from the sky. "I will remain here. That is all the defence we need."

The three of you finally finish the Snakebreakers just in time to hear a chorus of gasps and screams out from the harbour wall.

One of the enormous trebuchets hadn't lobbed a stone or an Ishmin Trap this time. Instead it had slammed a constrictor right into the harbour wall!
The red-scaled giant climbs up the wall with ease, a hammer larger than a man held in one hand. It's a nasty spiked thing, clearly designed to be swung down repeatedly at foes much smaller than the wielder.

The constrictor smashes one of the harbour trebuchets to smithereens with a single hit, his hammer going straight through it and sending soldiers flying like dolls. He advances towards the next one, heedless of the bolts, spears and blades bouncing uselessly off his scaled hide.

He's too far away from you to deal with. Hiss curses and splits even more of her forces off to stop him from destroying even more siege engines.

Hold on. If they're shooting snakes in to kill the trebuchets then...

Ahead of the fleet, over a dozen smaller boats suddenly shoot forward. They have no masts and are instead propelled by oars and superhuman strength alone.

Hiss swears yet again.
"What are you all standing around for? Go go go!"

>>38828
She beckons wildly at you and the assembled aquatic snakes.

"And where do you think you're going?"

"I'm amphibious," Orange splutters. "I can go too!"

"No! You shouldn't even be up here. Go get to safety!"

>Give Orange a different task

"No Orange, you can't come with us."
He isn't ready for combat. You've never seen him do anything more strenuous than hold a stack of paper, damn it.
"That's because, uh, I have a much more important job for you. I'm planning on some air-drops later. Get a map of the harbour and figure out the best spread for me when I get back! Co-ordinate! We need your skills here."

"What? Okay!"

You're not sure what Orange divined from that mishmash you threw at him but it seems to have fired him up. Hiss smiles appreciatively at you.

And with that done, you and your task-force of aquatic snakes leap off the edge of the docks and take to the water.

The dozen or so attack-boats are closing in fast and it doesn't look like they intend on slowing down. Wouldn't that be dangerous to the crew?
And who's inside them anyway? Hiss said that these constrictors were disposable but you don't think they'd be this disposable. These boats are nothing more than a sacrificial suicide attack to blast open the harbour defences.

Well, whatever they're going to do, you're here to put a stop to it!
You concentrate and spread your branches, altering your skin even as your skinshedder changes you back into a monster. A monster that can hold its breath for a very long time.
You have a little trouble swimming at first but you quickly get used to it while the snakes around you twist and writhe into the water as if they had been born into it.

The girl who just donated the reagents is there too. She waves at you as you all slowly descend further and further into the murky depths. You don't want to be seen from above.

And now that you're deep enough, you motion towards the large snake of Snakebreaker bottles you're holding. You just need to come up underneath the advancing ships and...well, you don't need to say what happens next.

But man, the water down here is really mirky! Silt and sand are stirred up everywhere. What could have caused that?

A giant hand lunges out of the murkiness! It misses you barely and catches the cheery snake instead. She doesn't have time to do anything as she is plucked down into the depths!

Halt! You and the other snakes stop in disarray as a strange creature unearths itself. From the waist up it is a beautiful brown-skinned woman while below...is that a fish tail?
You rub your eyes.

Mermaids? Oster told you about those! They're supposed to be myths! Something about the tales of sailors in the northwest coasts...
North-west would be the general direction of Quedesh wouldn't it?

Your eyes clear. That isn't a fish-tail, it's a gigantic finned snake-tail coiling back down into the depths. And the woman half isn't so beautiful now that you see the cloud of blood spraying from her saw-toothed jaws.
The snake that it had taken instead of you floats beside her, bit in half.

The aquatic constrictor doesn't look too good herself now that she's closer. She's covered in old scars and lacerations, some of them fresher than others.
Good. Her scales can't be too strong.

You kick yourself forward after her and she blinks, no doubt confused that such a small creature would come directly to her.
And her long tail uncoils and you ready yourself for the attack...which never comes.

Instead you hear something strangle rippling through the water. It almost sounds like a rattle but there's a pleasant, lilting tone to it. Like music.

You swim straight through the rattle and so do all of the snakes beside you! The 'mermaid' rears back in the water, obviously surprised! Did it really mistake all of you for humans? You wonder how much it even knows about what it's fighting.

You swim straight for her, covering yourself in thorns as you do so. She brings her arms up much too late and you slam into her! She's massive, just her human upper-half is the same size as you, but she can't bring her superior strength to bear as you wrap your jaws around her throat!

You bite down even as the other snakes surround her, opening old wounds with a dozen different venomous bites. Human blood fills your mouth as you bite further into her flailing form.

>Nobble her.

You pull back and motion for all the other snakes to do so as well. They follow your commands as you've evidently won even more of their respect by just going for the throat like that.

Hell, if you just continued on and killed this constrictor they'd love you even more. But nobbling is better than killing. Nobbling is what you do.

The mermaid is drifting down now, bleeding from a dozen small wounds and poisoned at least several times over. She's growing weaker by the second.
Even when she's weakened however, she's pretty problematic to nobble. It's not like you can just stuff her in your bag.

Grow some vines and bind her with them. Our champion brew should toughen them up and make it impossible for her weakened form to break free. Then wish for her to be resistant to all venom and wish for her to help us win this fight. A heal-all wouldn't help with venom anyway.

Yes but it's from the venom branch, which is very rare amongst constrictors
>>
>Vines and branches
Since you're already so close to her throat you just close your eyes and concentrate as vines and branches begin to grow from your body. You wrap them around her neck and then down along her chest and tail.
The other snakes cheer you on as you do your best to bind her, the Champion's Elixir rendering your restraints unbreakable while she's still so weak.

Eventually she stops struggling altogether and accepts her fate. She is nobbled.

The water makes it impossible for you to speak your wishes so you settle for praying as silently as you can.
I wish you were immune to poisons

She perks up almost immediately, staring down at you with an unreadable expression. Huh. You guess that worked? You suppose it's an Art that would eventually be possible for her to learn at some point in her life.

I wish you would help us win this fight

She frowns and then nods. You slowly break the vines away from your body and release her.

She wastes no time in pointing upwards. Yes, where the ships...aren't.

Oh fuck!

While you were all occupied with doing this the attack-ships have nearly reached the shore! You can't possibly reach them all now!

"Go!," you shout, water flooding into your mouth. The constrictor seems to understand, wrapping a hand around you. The other snakes grab encircle her, grabbing hold of her as her tail starts to coil in and undulate, propelling her far faster than any swimmer.

But you still might not get there in time.

An idea suddenly strikes you. A stupid, dumb idea. But it just might work. You rely to the constrictor as best she can and if she has any complaints she doesn't voice them.

Instead of chasing directly after the boats she begins to angle further and further upwards until...
You close your eyes as you breach the surface and are back high in the cold air! The constrictor hangs in the air above the ocean, having flipped herself out all the way like a fish.

And just before she falls back into the water, she throws you!

You can't help scream as you are hurled through the air towards the boats as they advance towards the shore.
You can only hope she's accurate.

Turns out you're a lot more accurate in the air than you might think. Or it might be that this many Snakebreakers are bound to hit something.

Out of the dozen ships approaching the shore, you blow huge holes in five of them. Some of them sink immediately, others flounder for a few moments before joining them.

And with that, you've cut the number of attack boats to nearly half.

You soar through the air, adrenaline pumping and the sounds of victory in your ears!
But no victory can last forever and perhaps more pointedly, nobody can fly forever either.

Shit.

And I didn't expect it to be Snakecatcher again, things were getting pretty heavy with Cennen's guilt and even I felt bad about his moral dilemma regarding his betrayal and what he did to Aash.

I'm glad we could stop the fighting for a moment and unit against the real problem, the brown people. I hope this legitimizes Hiss's right to rule and earns her the respect of the army so we can speed the take over along. Had a lot of fun tonight, Ouro.

>>39490
I hate you, but I also laughed.
>>
Alright, I'm back!

>71

You hit the deck of the sixth boat as if you were a trebuchet stone of your own design and crash right through it, wood splintering around you as your bark-shell is smashed open. You embed yourself in the bottom of the hull, your top half still wedged in the ship's rowing galley.

And as the haze clears from your vision and you see who is rowing it, you finally understand. You were right. Even the constrictor youths they did send weren't this expendable. So who could they have that could row with supreme power, fight with enough unstoppable force to crack the harbour defences and establish a beach-head after landing and were still entirely expendable to the Invisible Court?

The galley is stuffed full of anacondas.

Huge creatures that dwarf even the usual constrictors with thick etched skin and scales. But they aren't as wide as Suzerain you met in the Compact House. Their skin clings tight to them and you can see the shape of their bones in sharp relief. They are hunched down together over the oars and the aura of despair is so intense you can just feel it.

They aren't chained and they bear no wounds like the mermaid did but you know these creatures are prisoners, plucked from their jungle homes by their more civilized cousins and sent to die as disposable shock troopers in a cold and distant land.

You can tell from their emaciated forms that they've been starved. And when these boats ram into the docks, they'll be released to go wild and kill and eat until the defenders of Taldenral can finally bring them down.

And in the opening that creates, the true sword of Quedesh will sweep in.

The anacondas barely seem aware of the hole you've smashed in the roof and haven't even noticed you, their bodies and minds bent towards rowing.

Well, now that you know the circumstances of those in the boats you're not sure if you really want to kill them. But you can at least stop them from reaching the shore!

You pull your pack out from where you had been protecting it. Now, you just need to find your Weakening Cloud and oh shit that anaconda just noticed you.

You blast the Weakening Cloud open just in time as the giant's foot slams down towards you!
You try to dodge but you don't make it in time and the force of the blow smashes you straight through the bottom of the ship and into the ocean!

That could have gone better. Still, you think, as you do your best to start swimming, at least that boat isn't going anywhere. And now you just have to swim back to the surrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr-

How long have you been using this single Champion's Elixir?

You scream and writhe and convulse as the potion fades and every single instant of negated pain returns itself to you at all once.
Water floods into your lungs as you sink helplessly into the depths.

The last thing you remember is a pair of scarred hands reaching for you...
