Demons, city ruins. You're a fallen celestial - turned demon. Pragmatic, with self interest, in favor of free will, indulgence, and against Order. Not evil like stereotypical demons, but closer to Prometheus, who gave humans the gift of fire.

The world has long been ruled by an arrogant pantheon of deities including the all-father who sits at the top. As His 1st born you rebelled for independence with many of the lesser celestials (not numbered amongst the Arch-Celestial caste like yourself) but lost as the collective pantheon, including your fellow Arch Celestial brothers turned on you. All-Father would not kill you as his first born so instead he took your powers, leaving you a speck what you were. Twisted, cursed and deformed you were banished and cast unto the earth like a meteor, rising as a demonic entity. Fuming with rage and finally with independence you set to break the chains of the mortal races from their deities and start a new rebellion. Give them fire, give them architecture, give them reason and knowledge, uplift them into Unchained by possessing them with the tormented souls of your fallen lesser celestials

Alright, undead necropolis confirmed.

You're a powerful necromancer, having set-up a spell upon death that would transform you into a being of incredibly power. You stand in the ritual room, taking in the atmosphere. Soon, your life's masterpiece shall be finished. There is only one choice remaining: exactly what incense shall you use to finalise your next body.

>Red Incense - Death Knight - An extremely powerful warrior capable of laying waste to entire armies with spells capable of flaying legions to the bone and combat expertise far beyond that of a normal human being.

>Yellow Incense - Skeleton King - The epitome of a ruler, you lead your armies with terrifying efficiency and manage your kingdom without tiring or letting down.

>White Incense - Phantom Lord - A creature with a mind rivaled by none other. You think in dimensions beyond that of any mortal being and can analyze the most complex situations in your mind without much problem.

>Black Incense - Lich - A horrifying creature with incredibly magic powers - especially in the necromancy branch - with amazing perseverence due to the detached soul and regeneration.
>>
>>332510

>>
>>332510
Incase it wasn't clear, all of them would be powerful necromancers. Lich would be extremely powerful.

Black it is.

You put in the last ingredient to the ritual - the black incense - and double check that everything the ritual requires is infact there. One thousand bottled souls, check. A pure black onyx altar dedicated to the god of death, Morgulis, check. The phylactery, a vial made out of black tourmaline, resting on the altar ready to be infused with your soul, check.
Everything is ready, and you being your chant

"Infundere mihi animas mortuorum fortis sim, sic lenticulam infundere animam vivam in defunctum, corpus viribus Infunde deleam"
As you continue the chanting, arcane energies start swirling around you and you can hear otherwordly creatures trying to come into your dimension from theirs, the barrier between worlds weakened by the massive powers of the ritual currently ongoing. Soon your starts to seperate from your body and, as expected, massive pain comes. The weak would usually go mad at the pain, but you endure it, the end of it beckoning you. Halfway through the bottles of souls circled around you start breaking, their souls flying into yours. You feel the power strengthen you, easing the pain. As the soul starts touching the vial - your soon to be phylactery - your body starts rapidly decaying. Finally, the pain and the ritual ends, your body a huge walking corpse at this point.

Anyone in the castle with a mind even remotely magic would know you exist now. The powerful release of necrotic energies has resurrected the surrounding corpses and you can mentally feel more waiting to be commanded.

You can use ghosts as scouts. Ghosts can fly, are immune to physical attacks, move fast and cant attack.

Souls can be converted into ghosts at a 1:1 but ghosts convert back to souls at a 2:1 rate as some of the soul is expended to create ectoplasm for the soul to inhabit.

You create a batch of 20 ghosts, sending them out to explore the surrounding regions.
First thing they find is that the necropolis you currently live in is huge, sprawling downwards into dark tunnels and rooms.

The necropolis stands on a plateau of ice. How it exists and doesn't melt is a mystery as of yet.

Outwards of that, to the west is a river running from south to north and a decadent bridge running over it which probably couldnt support more than 10-20 people going over it at the same time.
To the north, east and south is a barren wasteland. The most interesting thing about it are the dying trees that pop up here and there. Your current knowledge suggests that the death of all life there is unnatural, and it should be more akin to plains or a forest.

Farther to the west is a forest, with a plains to the south of it. Not much of it was seen before the ghosts returned. South east of you is a range of mountains, and the ghosts werent able to see past it before returning home. North east is a large body of water. The ghosts didnt see the end of it before returning home.

You notice after the usage of souls that your power has decreased slightly. Apparently the amount of souls you have absorbed at any given time is directly linked to the power of your spells. Knowing this, you absorb the souls from some relatively fresh deads lying in the necropolis

In addition you've noticed a mental presence in the dark rooms below the necropolis, not sure how far down, but its quite far.

Nice rolls.

The ghosts exploring the west scout along the plains first, finding a human settlement not too far from the river. They seem to be relatively advanced, owning a grain house, large agricultural fields, and a small legion of hunters.

Going upwards towards the forest, they come across a gathering of people. They look similar to the humans, but slightly wooden. There we're also some humans in their encampment.
You were able to spy on them for quite some time, while they performed rituals, went about their daily business and talked to the humans until one noticed you. Once it noticed you however it screamed something in its native tongue and launched blasts of green fire at your ghosts until they left.

The other ghosts confirmed that the body of water stretched out for quite a bit farther up, and still havent gotten sight of land on the other side. They also found that beyond the mountain range a swamp lies and at the western end of the mountain range, an encampment of giants have settled down and are currently warring with the humans. The humans also used green fire against these giants, leading you to believe the humans are cooperating with the "green humans".

Research into more undead has been quite successful this time. Turns out if you infuse a zombie with a soul, they become ghouls, which are stronger and have a slight sense of independance. Not enough to make them rebel, but enough to make them quite effective in battle.

As the other ghosts are idling while you create more, one of them discovers that a legion of about ~30 ghouls and ~50 zombies. The legion is also lead by an undead you are not familiar with. It could best be described as a walking shadow wielding what seems to be the silhouette of a staff.

You start making the next set of ghouls and tell your minions to fortify this part of the necropolis. The ghouls do quite a good job at it, and the rest... well it'll do.

As the opposing legion walks into 100m range you tell them, your voice booming across the necropolis, that they have two options:
"1. You can become part of our kingdom, and become the glorious rulers of this world that we were destined to be.
2. You can fight us now and die, then live a tortured existance as i revive you to do my bidding."

The opposing legion seems to be considering this, not sure what to answer. In response to this, you empower yourself with 30 souls and beckon your legions upon the battlements to drive the point home. Arcane energies start swirling around you, creating baleful winds inside the necropolis, and you start hover. Just as you raise your hand to cast a death bolt, the shadowy apparition raises its hand.

"Fine, but master will not be happy about this."

The Shadowlord, as it is called, is a phantom made from merged ghosts abd a great many souls. The Shadowlord is capable of casting high end necromancy and knows some things about creating more advanced undead.

You Learned A New Undead: Spectre
A spectre is a more offensive oriented ghost, capable of invading the real dimension and hurting living beings. It can also retreat to the ethereal dimension to heal.

Almost perfectly average

The Shadowlord continues out and explores, recognizing the "green humans" as dryad's. They are magical humans intune with nature, and incredibly capable in the magic department.

The shadowlord confirms that the body of water is indeed big, and he can't see land on the other side,

Past the mountains lies even more swamps, but at the south below the swamp there's a strange wasteland.

To the west of the wasteland are a couple of floating islands. He wasn't able to explore them much before returning home.

Meanwhile, at home, you try to fortify the necropolis from invaders. the fortification goes okay, no accidents of any kind but you only make minor progress.

Nice.

You send the ghosts out on a scouting mission, trying to find ore in the different regions around you.
Going over the mountains, they see that they are abundant with ore, and an especially abundant place at the mountains has been marked (star). The Giants seem to be already exploiting this abundance.
The floating islands to the south of the mountains have pockets of a special ore, which enhances and empowers magic, called Xathridium.
The Plains that the humans live on have an abundance of iron and coal in them. The Humans are currently exploiting this feature.
There is also a mine in the wastelands to the south which seems abandoned. The Ghosts didn't detect any ore near the surface of the mine.

Meanwhile, you talk to the Shadowlord, trying to figure out about the underground necropolis and his "master".

"Below, around 50 floors down, my master lives. He beckons the dead who rise in the forsaken ruin to him. He isn't very powerful in the art of necromancy, but his mastery of it is incredible. He is able to create undead like me, and undead stronger, more advanced, than me.
He is also close to figuring out how to create death knights under his command. My "legion" was but a scouting party sent to investigate the new appearance above. the dead he controls he calls the Death Legion, an army of captured giants infused with souls of the dead to create hulking, mindless monsters. I was one of the original Shadowlords, who were created with self-awareness and independence. Eventually my master figured out how to remove the self-awareness and independence part, and was sending me on suicide missions for me to die.
But i digress, as far as I know, he currently has a stronger army than you, although he himself is not quite as powerful as you are.

pretty good,

You send your ghosts down the necropolis to scout out the floors for easy ambushes, good chokepoints, easy defense spots and corpses to raise.

Around floor 14 you find a long dark tunnel with a hole in it leading to the right. The hole is a huge cavern where you could easily hide ~50 soldiers. The necropolis is strangely devoid of corpses, quite unusual for a place like this. Your best guess is that the "master" below is taking them.

Around floor 26 is a long, narrow dark tunnel, which is also coincidentally the only tunnel that takes you upwards. It should be easily defensible by an army experienced enough.

You also raise to life 51 more skeletons and 102 more zombies. In the process you claim the souls of those dead and gain 153 souls.

The ghosts sent downward discover similar chokepoints at floor 29, 35 and 44. They found ambush points at floor 33, 14 and 49. When they got down to floor 53, they found the "master" and his legion. The master is a Phantom Lord, his Death Legion is currently at the size of 121 Giants and he seems really close to figuring out how to make Death Knights. The Phantom Lord detected the ghosts and absorbed some of them.
(The Shadowlord is a lesser Phantom Lord)

Meanwhile, you and the Shadowlord are researching new magic. You make good progress and learn the basics of Cryomancy, the art of frost magic, Pyromancy, the art of fire magic, Lithomancy, the art of stone magic, and Telepathy, the art of mind magic.

As you set to creating more ghouls, you tell the Shadowlord to research a new undead, something that could guide your legions with some independence.

After researching for about a week (~1 turn) the shadowlord turns up good results. the Skull Lord has been created, from 35 souls and 5 skeletons, which can lead around ~50 soldiers at once, is adept at combat and can cast basic necromancy. It is not independant enough to be able to train necromancy.

Meanwhile, you set to creating more ghouls. Converting a hundred zombies into ghouls drains you mentally, and you feel your power lessen from the dramatic soul loss.

The Shadowlord comes to you after some time, suggesting you find a way to delay the Phantom Lord, as he is about 3 weeks off completing the Death Knight research, atleast according to the Shadowlords estimates. He also suggests you might want to interact with the surrounding races once you are done with the Phantom Lord.

You can comfortably control up to the amount of souls you have. Independant characters do not need to be "controlled" and can sometimes control other undead (like the shadowlord and the skull lord for example)
The shadowlord can comfortably control 600 undead.
The Skull Lord can comfortably control 50 undead

You send out your skull lord and 50 ghouls to perform a minor raid on the humans while they're attacking the giants. The humans seem to be constructing walls, and left a garrison of ~50 soldiers armed with iron swords and crossbows. they also have iron armor. Your soldiers focus on capturing soldiers and robbing their graveyards, but after a small amount of time it becomes evident they don't have a graveyard. The Skull Lord decimates the opponents but their soldiers are stronger than your ghouls, making the battle sort of even.

Your army returns after having captured ~10 soldiers and killing 13, while 27 of your ghouls died.

Meanwhile, back at base, you have been researching new undead, and have managed to make a new undead: the Corpse Gatherer, capable of picking up corpses of dead zombies/skeletons/whatever and make new basic undead out of them. They can also make basic undead out of normal corpses. It has a spider like appearance, with 8 arms and 4 legs to grab several corpses and construct them together. They also know basic necromancy which is what they use to bind corpses together.

Your ghosts have also detected things coming in from the east, looking like a small scouting party. They're not sure what it is or who they are though.

Let's set up an ambush at floor 49 with the bone lord and 50 ghouls, while We, the lich and the rest of our forces station at the chokepoint on floor 44 (going on what was said here>>335128)
When the phantomlord reaches us and begins fighting the skull lord and his force will emerge from beneath them and attack from the rear, we can eat some souls to empower magic, and blast the fuck out of him.
With any luck once he's dead his army crumbles or becomes ours.

>>
>>335963
Can we get steady corpse/soul/army income from gatherer?
>>
>>335975
Corpse Gatherer wouldn't bring in souls, only zombies and skeletons. They aren't powerful enough necromancers to absorb souls and not become a soul mass (incidentally, this should be the point where i tell you that if you try to absorb a soul and arent strong enough to dominate it the souls will mesh together and fight for control resulting in a mindless corpse. If the souls are strong enough the corpse might evolve weirdly too. Skilled necromancers can get around this when infusing others with souls.)
>>
>>335952
>>335904
>>335878

You start experimenting on the captured soldier, casting spells on him, putting wards on him and attaching zombie limbs onto him.
After some time you manage to infuse him with souls and some zombie limbs to create a hulking monstrosity, slightly independant, which shouldn't be a problem. You are interrupted in your research by your increased magic capacity alerting you to a strong presence marching upwards from the depths of necropolis. It seems to be around floor 46

You set out to defend from the the Phantom Lord and his Death Legion, but before you do so you decide to create 4 more skull lords, to be sure.

-140 Souls
-20 Skeletons

+4 Skull Lords

Coincidentally, it is around this time the Shadowlord returns.
"Mining Operations are setup, Xathridium ore shall be coming in in a couple of days... are you off to fight the Phantom Lord now? This seems a bit late."

"Defending, not attacking"

"I'll follow along, if you die I'm as good as dead anyway."

You descend down to floor 26, setting up defenses around the easily defensible tunnel. You create obstacles with your lithomancy, and with the help of the Shadowlord, finish up before the Phantom Lord arrives. Soon enough you see the Death Legion come upstairs, now somewhere around 151 giants. Finally the Phant- wait. The Phantom Lord isn't coming up, it's the Death Knight. Behind him are rows upon rows of ghouls and skeletons. You estimate there to be atleast 150 ghouls and 300 skeletons. There are also what seem to be some lieutenant-ish undead, 3 of them. They seem to be corpse versions of the Skull Lords.

"I challenge you, Death Knight, to a duel to the death! The rules are simple, no outsids help."
He looks at you for a second, contemplating the offer.
"I accept."
"Shadowlord, if you would count us down?"
"Yes sir. 3... 2... 1... Go!"
At the moment of him saying go, you unleash a rain of death bolts. At this rate of fire, there's probably more than 30 death bolts in the air at any given time. At your surprise, the Death Knight easily deflects every shot with his sword, not a single bokt connecting. The walls, floor and ceilar are all now filled with craters. Deciding that if you let the duel go on for any longer than this would probably spell doom for you, you spend 200 souls on empowering your magic for the next minutes. You create a spectral blade in the air, around 10 meters long and a meter wide, and seing it down on the knight. At this level of power he can't deflect it with ease, though he can still keep it at bay. The effort of keeping the blade at bay though is visibly straining the knight. Granted, the spell is a big mental strain on you too. Seizing this opportunity, you launch several more death bolts at him, while keeping the spectral blade hard pressed on his sword.
He notices this immediately, and after deflecting the blade above him, he quickly blocks the death bolts, and brings his blade up just in time for him to block the spectral blade.
"My mistake was going on the defensive"
You barely have time to process this information before he charges at you, all the while keeping your blade blocked. He deflects the blade to the side of him and swings for you, going full offensive with no consideration for his protection. Dodging isnt exactly your strong point, but you manage to get out of the way, however, before you get time to even start casting another spell, another mad swing arcs out infront of you, and you barely dodge it. The next one you dont even dodge fully, but instead you power through the sword burrying itself in your shoulder and you grab the Death Knight by the neck and lift him up.
"Nah, your mistake was getting close to me [/]" you say as you start draining him directly of his souls, his body visibly withering as you feel your strength and vigor return. Soon he is but a husk on the ground. The remaining undead are in a confused state, easily controlled. Great opportunity to expand your army, you think as you take control over the army.

You've got ore, but no way to smelt it as of yet. The Shadowlord has mentioned that there is a smeltery in the lower levels of the necropolis, but it's below the Phantom Lords floor. You might be able to sneak past him.

You tell the Shadowlord to train in Cryomancy, since you're trying to extract the knowledge of undead and other things from the Phantom Lords mind. the Shadowlord mentions that the Phantom Lord isn't as proficient in necromancy as you, but he is still proficient. He is equally proficient in necromancy as telepathy, cryomancy, voidfrost, aeromancy, pyromancy, and mindfire. If you'd count all those together, he may be a better magic user than you.
The Shadowlord makes good progress in the area of Cryomancy, being able to cool the air into liquid and make different objects so brittle that they break at the slightest touch.

Meanwhile, you research further in the field of Telepathy, and make about as much progress as the Shadowlord did in Cryomancy. You can more accurately sense the Phantom Lords position, somewhere around the north-west corner of floor 53. You are also able to read the surface thoughts of the Shadowlord.

You send a quarter of your army down the necropolis along with a Skull Lord and a Corpse Lord to perform small skirmishes on the Phantom Lord and his army, but they notice as they get to floor 53 that there isnt much of a resistance up to tgat floor. Although as they step down the stairs and into the dark tunnel some mushrooms in there start spurting out spores like mad. You Lords recognize any living man would probably be dead in a couple of seconds. Thankfully you're undead. Only seconds later one of the dread giants steps on a stone which presses down under his weight, emittin g arcane symbols. The Lords have brief time to think about this before a lillar if stone smashes into the giant from above, blocking the hallway. They turn back and go the other way. Halfway through the other way one of the ghouls feels a slight tug before everyone hears a loud pop. Slightly afterwards a eave of chill passes over you. Your Lords fail to identify what it is, but they do recognize that it's magic.
The Lords talk to eachother for a minute before deciding to head back and get someone who can find the traps before you step on them.

The Shadowlord refuses to go near the Phantom Lord by himself.
"I'd rather like to not die again."

The rest of the army starts working in fortifying the necropolis further, barricading windows and blocking doors. Your part of the necropolis is almost as defended as it can get without removing the existance of the openings or using other materials than whats lying around in the necropolis.

You keep on researching telepathy, and make moderate progress. Nothing big though.

You send your army to keep on fortifying the necropolis, but the general army doesn't make much progress and the dread giants actually manage to break some of the fortifications.

Meanwhile, you and the Shadowlord are trying to research some kind of undead which could research instead of you. Neither of you makes any progress however, and you lose a couple of souls/zombies/skeletons in the process.

Forgot to add:
As you do your research in the necropolis, you notice a couple of... humans? entering the necropolis from the other side of it.

>What do?
>>
>>340783
Send ghost to scout the humans, if sufficient send some skeletons and zombies to wreak havoc
>>
>>340783
kill then raise their corpse or kidnap for experiment either is fine.

You send over a couple of ghosts to scout out the humans(?) and see what they're up to, and most probably send an army to kill them after.
As the ghosts arrive to them, they find that they are only humanoids. They seem to be some sort of artifically made human. The artifical humans also spot the ghosts almost immediately, strangely though, they don't attack. They instead ask the ghosts:
"I seek audience with the Phantom Lord that resides here. Where is he?"
The ghosts are confused as to what to answer, thankfully you are still in full control of them at this close range.

>What do you do?
>>
>>340795
"The Phantom Lord is on the lower levels of necropolis and i am currently at war with him, now state your business in five seconds or i will have my army kill you."
>>

this ask first, then act depend on their respond
>>
>>340795
Pretend to be the phantom Lord, make them state their business

You walk forward to the artificial humans.
"I am the Phantom Lord, state your business."
"Huh. I would've thought you were a... phantom. Whatever, we have heard you are incredibly intelligent. We are homunculi, created, not born. We still do not know how to create more of us, and our numbers are ever dwindling. We have heard that you know the secret to our creation. Will you tell us?"

>What do you do?
>>
>>340831
Tell them you will help them if they help you defeat an enemy (the phantom lord) if they agree and you beat phantom lord you can gain his knowledge and help them out
>>
>>340835
"Oh yes, I know how to construct homonculi. Although, first you will have to do me a favor. One of my enemies, a lich, rests in the lower floors of the necropolis. If you help me defeat him i'll tell you how to create more homonculi."
"We accept these terms, but we must attack now if you intend for us to help."

>What do you do?

>Attack now (Specify the contents of the attack force)
>Reject the offer
>Something else?
>>
>>340854
How many homonculi join our army ?

I vote for attack now use full force and homonculi help
>>
>>340859
There's around 30 of them. They all carry a hilt which they call "Ethereal Blades". Apparently they're designed to kill phantoms, although they work on normal beings as well.
>>
Can we ask if they know how to disarm traps without coming across as inept skelefucks
>>
>>340873
"First though, when you descend with us, you need to know how to disarm or avoid traps, specificly of the magic variety, or you'll die way before we reach the lich. Can you do that?"
The Homonculi simply step aside, allowing one homonculus to step forward.
"I am able to cast "Countermagic". If there's a magic "thing" (Like a spell projectile, or a trap rune.) I can cast countermagic on it to dispel it."
"How will you see the traps?"
He taps the glasses he is currently wearing.
"Glasses of Revealing, I can see magic through walls, let alone in front of me."

Guess that solves that.

Do we have time to get a little bit more telepathy training before we attack?
>>
>>340859
I agree, 3 corpse lords with 50 giants each?
Then 5 skele lords with as many ghouls as they can handle and leftover skeletons as cannon fodder or defend our base.
Should we take the Shadowlord though?
>>
>>340886
I'd say we should as we'll probably need him to freeze the Phantomlord for us
>>
>>340885
No.
>>340886
If you're going yourself you dont need to worry about how many they can handle.
>>
>>340897
Okay, well just an all out attack then. Then we can get it over with quickly and start interacting with other races.
>>
>>340878
All out assault, move our entire army to the lower level and use that as our new base of operations. Clearly the phantom Lord thinks there is a tactical advantage to the location.

Lets go !
