You are Nil, agent of the Lady of the Final Goodnight. You have been tasked with entering a crypt and vanquishing the foul lich that lurks within, so that you may return the lost souls risen to do his bidding back to their restful slumber.

Inside the crypt is a hallway that extends for a modest distance. You stop to observe your surroundings. A lone skull resting against a pillar catches your eye.

You bequeath your hat upon the skull. Fashion will do it no service in the Hereafter but you pray that the donation will at least keep the skull's owner warm during their eternal rest.

"A resident of these hallowed halls, or a casualty of the cruel lich's machinations? Who can say? What this humble servant of fate does know for sure is the imminent demise of the fiend that makes its nest amongst the deceased. Hark, O lich that disrupts the sleep of thine peers for ill purpose! If thou be listening, know that thine end swiftly approaches!"

When you finish your soliloquy, you kiss the skull and return it to its resting place besides the pillar. There is rattling from deeper within. The lich's woefully enslaved minions have surely heard you.

You wait for them to come, but are horrified when you see that there are more skeletons than you are equipped to deal with. They have you cornered. You whisper an ancient sutra, pleading with the Lady of the Final Goodnight to cradle you gently as you return to her not as a servant seeking orders, but as a recently-deceased soul weary from the mortal coil.

But suddenly, you hear a strange rattle. A desperate rattle. It comes from behind a pillar. the same pillar that the skull is resting behind. The skeletons turn their attention from you to the skull. The skull and the skeletons exchange conversational rattles. Eventually, the skeletons shamble away. It appears that the lich's magic has trapped the skull's owner's soul inside of it.

The skull rattles gratefully at you. You stomp it, reducing the skull to ash and freeing the trapped soul so it can depart to the Great Beyond. Your hat remains where the skull once was, as a memento to the assistance the skull provided in your mission.

Proceeding deeper in the crypt, you hear sinister laughter no doubt being made by the lich as he awakens more deceased to swell his ranks. You are getting close. As you walk, you get the strange sensation that something or someone is watching you.

>Stop and check your surroundings.

You get down on your hands and knees before the demon. She raises her hammer and prepares to bring it down on you.

"What are you doing? I won't accept surrender from someone who would give up so easily! Die like the dog you are!"

You seem to have angered her.

You quickly roll to your gun as she brings down the hammer. While the demon tries to dislodge the hammer from the ground, you take aim and fire. The bullet pierces through her chest and she falls to the floor.

She clutches her chest where the bullet struck, still alive but in extreme pain.

You hoist her onto your back and continue. A trail of blood is left as you walk and her futile struggling only worsens her bleeding. She will probably not make it in time for you to find help.

At the end of the hall, you arrive at a large door. You know without a doubt that behind it is the lich.

Before the confrontation, you pray to the Lady of the Final Goodnight.

"Lady of The Final Goodnight, most merciful of the Mistresses of Fate, please guide this humble servant in destroying the lich that lurks behind these doors. In addition, I beseech thee, O Lady of the Final Goodnight, to provide the poor demon teetering on the edge of life and death with a restful slumber as she passes on to the other side."

"I'm not dying!"

You press a finger against her lips.

"Hush, sweet child of the Infernal Realms. Your time shall soon come. Do not fight it."

She suddenly bursts into tears. Her loud sobbing echoes deafeningly throughout the halls.

"But I don't wanna die!"

You hush her.

"Fear and regrets will only endanger your passing. Calm thyself, lest you suffer the Endless Nightmares."

She does not calm down. You do not have time for this. Through the demon's wails, you can faintly hear the lich's cackling. If you waste but a moment longer with the demon, the lich may amass even more minions to overwhelm you.

You cradle the demon in your arms and kiss her forehead. After stroking her hair and rocking gently for a few minutes, she finally falls asleep. You rest her against the wall.

"Goodnight, dear child of the Infernal Realms."

By now the lich's cackling has ceased. Only the demon's soft snoring can be heard in the otherwise silent halls. You enter the door and see the lich floating above dozens of armed skeletons.

"Lich, begone from this place posthaste, else this humble servant shall unleash the wrath of the Lady of the Final Goodnight upon thee!"

The lich gives you a smug grin before directing his skeleton minions to attack.

Strangely, the skeletons do not attack. The lich points at you and hisses. The skeletons do not respond. You point your gun at the lich.

"Thy fell magic no longer rules over the dead of this crypt, lich! Those whose souls you attempted to bend to your will shall not heed thy commands!"

The skeletons begin to rattle. They're cheering for you. It would appear that because of whatever the skull you encountered earlier said to them, they have gained the will to resist the lich's orders.

The lich raises his hands, pleading for you to spare him.

"Thine end has come, lich."

You spin your gun's cylinder to the final bullet, reserved specifically for the lich and blessed by the Lady of the Final Goodnight herself, and fire. It sings as it flies through the air, and space seems to ripple when it collides with the lich's ethereal form. With an ear-piercing screech, the lich burns to ashes. The lich's magic fades from the crypt and the skeletons crumble, freeing their captive souls so that they can once again enjoy their eternal slumber.

You leave the room and see the demon is still asleep. You take her hand and chant a short prayer to return to the domain of the Lady of the Final Goodnight so you can report your success and, hopefully, get help for the demon.
