You are Prince Meirion auk Gwyrren, the only sane man in a royal family with dubious concepts of strategy, justice, taxation, and governance in general. You have made it your goal in life to keep your family on the throne and your head firmly attached to your body.

===============

Now that all the noteworthy guests have arrived - you exclude your uncle from the list - your father has officially announced the beginning of the Crown Prince's wedding. It'll be an affair lasting several days, peppered with meetings, festivals, banquets, and soirées, and it all begins tonight at the palace.

Your date for the night, Lady Rhonwen auk Cysgod, is less than enthused about the celebration in general, but she's been a good sport about keeping you company. Elsewhere, Princess Agda and her sister Laila are mingling pleasantly, but Princess Reagan and Archduchess Aleksandra are not having such a good time. Reagan doesn't like men flirting with her - and you're quite surprised that any would even try, given her reputation - and Aleksandra doesn't liked Gwyrdens in general. It's understandable, given the number of conflicts between Gwyrddarfordir and Rosea, but you'll have to do something about it eventually before things get too unpleasant.

The foreign royalty can wait a bit longer though. Your immediate concern your date; it'd be rather ill-mannered and pointless to simply leave her now.

"Does your family host banquets very often?"

"Occasionally, when someone becomes a master enchanter or alchemist, or when we make a new breakthrough," Rhonwen says. "They're less… ostentatious than this, but rowdier at the same time. I'm not quite sure how to describe it."

"I suppose these parties could stand to be a little more relaxed," you say. "It's hard to enjoy wine properly when you can't afford to get drunk."

"My grandfather doesn't really care about such propriety," Rhonwen says. "To be honest, that's a point where more formality should be required. There is such a thing as being too comfortable around family."

Rhonwen stabs another piece of meat and sets it to boil in the hot pot before hiding a yawn.

"Tired?"

"I often get lost in my work, so I sleep very little," she says. "It's been worse these days because of all the business I had to take care of."

"If you're tired, you should rest a while," Myrddin says as he walks up to your table along with his wife. "Unfortunately, his highness has people to meet, but my wife and I can keep you company for some time, your grace. I've been meaning to learn more about your work."

"I don't mind," Rhonwen says. "I wouldn't want to distract his highness from his duties."

"In that case…" You stand and bow politely. "Please excuse me. I'll return before the evening is over."

Now that you're free, you need to decide who you're going to visit first. Agda and her sister seem to be pleasant company, but Reagan and Aleksandra are in difficult moods, if you want to deal with that at the moment.

You decide to speak with Agda and Laila first. They seem to be enjoying themselves, and you'd rather not immediately jump into the task of placating Reagan and Aleksandra.

Agda and Laila are both speaking to a small group of young nobles, although Agda is doing most of the talking while her sister stands shyly behind her, not that you can blame her. If anything, you're more surprised that Agda could so quickly find something in common with foreign nobles.

"Svekka winters aren't as difficult as people say," Agda says. "We devised ways to preserve food several centuries ago, and have only gotten better at it since we started investing more of our resources into alchemy."

"Yes, my uncle brought some fruit preserves back from one of his trips," one of the nobles says. "It was quite delicious, but I'm not sure I'd try it every day. The taste was a little… coarse isn't quite the word I'm looking for. Dominating, perhaps?"

"The techniques vary from region to region," Agda says. "Northern variants tend to use more alcohol, so the taste takes some getting used to."

"I'd have to try it sometimes," you say. "As I understand it, the food can last a while. We might be able to use it to feed our troops."

The nobles instinctively bow and back away slightly; if you want to speak with Princess Agda, they don't want to get the slightest bit in your way.

"We do use some fruit preserves as a reward for our soldiers," Agda says. "The food here isn't bad at all though. I quite enjoy some of the grilled fish you have."

"It's one of the advantages of living on the coast," you say. "We get fish every day, although the quality changes depending on the season."

"It is an interesting change from what we usually eat in Svekka," Agda says, "and my father did say we should see how things are done elsewhere so we can learn from it. That's a more tedious matter, however. Did you need something, Prince Meirion?"

Laila gently pushes her sister towards you. "It's all right," she says. "You should dance with the prince a little."

"I suppose if you're fine with it." Agda gently takes your hand. "I must admit, you were quite impressive earlier."

"In that case, allow me the pleasure of accompanying you."

You bring Agda to the dance floor and wait for the next song to start before stepping in. The song isn't too difficult, and Agda steadily follows your lead across the floor.

"You're quite good at this as well," you say. "Have you had much practice?"

"Only the same mandatory lessons that royalty are expected to learn," Agda says. "I imagine it was much the same for you."

"Of course," you say. "I have to make a good impression at these parties, and it is an important part of Gwyrden culture."

"Yes, my parents told me something similar," she says. "To be honest, I did enjoy it, but I didn't have much time for it as I got older. I had more important duties to take care of, and I had to look after Laila."

"You seem quite close to your sister," you say.

"Are you surprised that a princess would get along with her half-sister?"

You glance at Aleksandra, who was nearly driven to death by her half-brother.

"You have to admit," you say, "it is a little unusual. Our circumstances tend to breed resentment and competition."

"That is true for some," Agda says, "but I liked being an older sister, and we've been together as far back as I can remember. Laila lost her mother when she was young, so I decided to protect her."

"That's certainly an admirable sentiment," you say.

"It is a little bothersome sometimes though." Agda grins mischievously. "I don't want to leave her, so I promised myself I'd only marry a man who would agree to take care of her as well."

It takes all your effort and concentration to maintain your composure.

"I'm sure you'll find someone who respects your feelings," you say. "You're both certainly worth the effort."

The song ends and you smoothly step off the dance floor.

You return Agda to her sister, who's politely listening to the surrounding conversation.

"That was quite enjoyable," you say. "I'd love to stay longer, but there's a small crowd of people I have to meet. I looking forward to spending time with the two of you again."

"Of course, your highness." Surprisingly, it's Laila who speaks this time. "Thank you for looking after my sister."

You smile at Laila. "You're my guest as well, Laila," you say. "Your sister isn't the only person who's looking after you."

Laila blushes and shuffles her feet oddly. You smile and bid them good bye before moving on to your "appointment."

Aleksandra is now outright badgering a group of old officers who have had less than successful endeavours in Rosea. Losers can't talk back, and it'll be absurdly embarrassing if they walk away from a girl less than half their age.

"Come to think of it, general," Aleksandra says, "you were there at Cyfoethmor when my father visited, weren't you? He described his visit as a great victory for Rosea."

Cyfoethmor is the "capital" of what's unofficially referred to as East Gwyrddarfordir, the part of the country that's on the eastern side of the North River. It's adjacent to Rosea, and the Tsar tried to conquer it several years before you were born. Losses on both sides were massive, and the Roseans were only forced to pull back because of the winter season. In the end, the territory wasn't conquered, but it's still a mark of shame in Gwyrden history.

Agda and Laila are from not-Germany. Their country is on the verge of either an Industrial Revolution, or a French Revolution, or both.

Reagan is from not-Ireland. Her father's position is weak, her position is weak, and she had several of her suitors assassinated so that other nobles wouldn't be able to use her to claim the throne. She's desperate for a way out.

Aleksandra is from not-Russia. She has an older brother, so her own position isn't that high, but she doesn't have any political shit to deal with either.

There are others, but they're the most relevant right now.

"It's a shame it was so long ago," you say. "I'm afraid I've never seen a Rosean victory. I'm quite curious as to what they look like."

Aleksandra narrows her eyes and glares at you, while the officers sigh in relief and quickly shuffle away.

"I'm sure you'll see one if you keep serving in the military," Aleksandra says.

"Eventually."

Aleksandra stays quiet. You have her cornered just like she'd cornered those officers, and she knows it. Finally, she sighs and her soldiers drop.

"Fine, you win this one," she says. "I'll be less abrasive for this evening, at least. Did you want something?"

"Why do people keep asking me that? All I want is the pleasure of your company."

Aleksandra laughs. "You're probably the only person here who would want that," she says. "But since you asked, I won't say no. What did you have in mind?"

"I think there's a chess set somewhere around here," you say. "Would you care to join me?"

"Why, certainly." Aleksandra takes your arm, though she sadly doesn't press her chest against you as much as you're used to.

You find a chess set in a guest room. It's not far from the banquet, but it's quiet. Perhaps a more private setting will let Aleksandra stifle her pride a little.

"You can go first," you say.

"I don't need a handicap."

"Oh?" You raise an eyebrow. "Does that mean you don't want to show me a Rosean victory?"

Aleksandra frowns. Reluctantly, she picks up a piece.

Aleksandra begins with an aggressive offense. You're initially taken aback, but you know playing on the defensive will only cost you the game, so you decide to match her attacks.

It takes a while, but Aleksandra's early advantage erodes one piece at a time. Five moves before you force her into checkmate, she sinks back into her chair and tips her king over.

"Looks like I lost again," she says.

"No Rosean victory today, sadly." You smirk slightly and shrug. "Don't take it too hard. I've had a lot of practice."

"So have I." Aleksandra crosses her arms under her chest. "It doesn't make me feel any better."

"We both know real battles are what truly matter anyway," you say.

"As you so pointedly reminded me earlier," Aleksandra says, "there's no reason for that to make me feel better either."

"I suppose so," you say. "Sorry."

"There's no point in apologizing, even if you mean it," Aleksandra says. "Bragging rights are the winner's prerogative after all."

"If you don't my me asking, why do you dislike Gwyrddarfordir so much?"

"Isn't it obvious?" She nods her chin at the chess set. "It hurts to lose. Rosea was doing well against Gwyrddarfordir, and we knew how to handle the Crown Prince, but then you came along and ruined everything. Thousands of soldiers lost their lives, our coffers were gutted and respectable officers ended their careers in disgrace. As the Tsar's daughter, all I can do now is bully old men who haven't set foot on a battlefield in years. It's disgusting."

You can empathize with her situation. If you had won a string of battle only to get stalled by a crushing defeat, you probably wouldn't take it very well either.

"I know you've had some victories recently," you say. "Something to do with Archduke Viktor?"

"That dead bastard? That was just a minor quibble," Aleksandra says. "It's not worth remembering. Besides, in the end, I didn't do much of the work."

"You were the one who gave the troops their assignments and set the objectives, so it's your victory," you say. "If you remember only your losses and trivialize your victories, your mood will never improve."

"You know what?" Aleksandra stands up and straightens out her uniform. "I think you're right. To be honest, I like war. Life and death situations are the easiest to see what someone is capable of and where they stand. Maybe that's more important than who wins or loses."

"That's one way to look at it," you say. "Come, we should return to the banquet before rumours spread."

"Yes, it would be terrible if people accused the Victorious Prince of consorting with a Rosean."

You return to the banquet. Aleksandra finds herself a seat at an empty table, while you go looking for Reagan. As it turns out, she's no longer at the banquet, and it takes you several minutes before you find her sitting outside on a bench.

"Oh, your highness, you finally came to save me," Reagan says. "I'm afraid I had to flee from… everything, really. All those dead suitors and men still don't get the hint. I wonder how Princess Agda deals with it."

"I hope you won't have to make another example."

"Of course not," Reagan says. "You wound me by merely speaking of the possibility."

"Better safe than sorry."

"Perhaps so," Reagan says, "but since you kept me waiting for so long, I wonder if you could make it up to me."

Already danced with Agda and Rhowen, this makes it harder to for her to directly compare her standing

Marrying Reagan still seems like the best bet to me.

I'm switching my vote to this:
>[Dilettante/1d8] Offer to let her choose a social event for you to attend, along with Agda, Laila and Aleksandra.
It seems like the more logical choice if we want to keep from showing favoritism to one of the candidates.

Another tie, but I can work with this one.

I like Reagan, I do she's my top pick. Still doesn't mean I'm going to show favoritism and piss away political capital.

As always, you are awesome, OP.

Dancing with her would just be standard by this point, so it wouldn't make up for anything. You decide to just let Reagan pick what she wants.

"To begin with, why don't I let you pick an event for us to attend?" You ask. "I'm afraid it won't just be the two of us since I don't want to show any favouritism at the moment, but it'd give you a chance to do something you enjoy."

"Very well, I suppose that's a start," Reagan says. "I'm afraid I have a more pressing favour to ask for though."

"If it's in my power to grant it," you say, "I'll gladly oblige."

"Oh, it's nothing complicated," Reagan says. "I'd just like to borrow your bathroom. The banquet was quite hot and stuffy, and I'd like to freshen up a little. I assume you have some of the better amenities."

That sounds perfectly reasonable.

"Please, follow me."

You bring Reagan to your chambers, avoiding the servants just in case. Your bath is the size of a small pool, with cold and hot water on demand, and you have a small collection of soaps and scented oils - most of them were gifts, honest - so Reagan should have everything she needs.

"I was wondering if you could help me wash my back as well."

Or not.

Reagan deftly unties the laces on her dress with a speed that leads you to suspect she'd planned this already. She angles her body so that you can only see her back, but it doesn't make her figure any less tempting. If anything it makes it worse.

Fortunately, your will is an unyielding bastion of steel.

"I suppose I can do that."

You take a wet cloth and wipe the sweat off Reagan's back. She shivers slightly at your touch.

"I wonder if Princess Agda or Archduchess Aleksandra would be this bold," she says. "In fact, I wouldn't mind if your highness wanted to take me by force."

"I would," you say. "There are some things that must be considered carefully. This is one of them."

"I suppose you already have consorts and concubines for your pleasure." Reagan says. "Still, since you wish to consider your options, it's only fair that you be informed of what you're getting. This should be an appropriate preview, yes?"

"No, if anything, it's quite inappropriate," you say, "but I suppose that would be time. Unfortunately, I won't be able to enjoy it much."

"Later, perhaps."

You finish washing Reagan's back and let her put her dress back on before returning to the banquet. One thing's certain: you're going to need Olwen's help tonight.
