Hello and welcome back (or just plain welcome) to Cyborg Mercenary Quest! In this primarily Devil May Cry and Metal Gear: Rising-inspired action quest, you play an underground soldier-for-hire in a cyberized future where technology is omnipresent and humanity is transhumanism is the dominant ideology. "Augmentation", the process of replacing and improving one's body with cyberware is the norm and there is nearly nothing that could be considered "natural" anymore. In this setting, we find our heroine, who completely embraces her criminal lifestyle for all that it's worth, tackling the art of murder with reckless abandon while continuously facing enemies way more dangerous than herself and somehow making it out alive.

So without further ado, let's get back to it!

--------------

You drive on through the city, the metropolis around you reduced to little more than a hazy blur of black, blue and red zipping by around you. It's still raining, but it's more a gentle drizzle than the absolute downpour that was the case before. In one day, you managed to piss off the Thunderbolts, one of the more powerful street gangs in the area, take the life of a major corporate figure who had dipped his toes into said gang's business and dipped your toes into something that you already know to be way bigger than some financial mogul funding street crime.

Eventually noting that you're reaching your place, you slow down and eventually turn off the road, hopping off of your hoverbike in the process. It's the usual good-for-nothing sight that greets you. A run-down partially rusted apartment complex where the protection against that kind of shit has worn thin. Dim, yellow lighting and black chrome is the sight that greets you as you let go of your bike at the nearest 'lot, make sure it properly shuts off and locks before grabbing your assorted bag of spoils of war and entering home sweet home.

The moment you enter the building, the dinky small elevator that makes up the first floor rattles, activates and slowly slides upwards. It already recognized your body's signature, it knows what floor to go to. Indeed, it halts after a short while and slides open, allowing you to see three identical sliding doors. This place isn't the best place ever, but it's good enough, which is all you could ever ask for. Besides, you kind of like this place. It has its own kind of charm in how shit it is.

You walk forward to your door, glancing at the narrow, rectangular screen that shines at you at eye-level. A name in yellow, glowing letters. "Trish" may be the alias your bootleg ID-Stick gives when you're on the job, but this place had to be filled in with your real name.

>What is the name that glows at you from your door?
>>

>>
>>321081

Ooooh, hmm... I'm half tempted for it to be something super against her personality type, so that she wants to generally hide it for additional reasons. Like, Priscilla or something.

But that's not my vote yet, I wanna think about it.
>>
>>321122
Go ahead and take your time. The night's still young and all that.
>>
>>321108
Alright, settled on Carmilla for first name, after the lesbian vampire. :P

Still not sure about the last name.

Say, how do we go about spending points?
>>
>>321081
>Molly
Also you could have made post in last thread that you made new thread.
>>
>>321211
We'll get to points once we're done with this little introductory scene.

>>321213
Fair enough, did so now. QMing, it's a learning experience!

We're still in need of a surname.
>>
>>321232

Havens, for the surname.

Molly Carmilla Havens sounds a bit like a normal person's name. Like, the parents picked a fancy middle name, because hey, if they don't like it, they can just abbreviate it.

And it means we're an M.C.
>>
>>321250
Aha, I like it. Sorry about the delay by the way, surprise things happening over here.

Molly Havens. Carmilla for a middle name, your parents were pretentious when they decided to name you, but you can manage. That's what aliases is for and it's not like someone would just look at "Molly Havens" and assume they're a gun for hire. In a way, you should be grateful.

The door slides aside as you get close and you enter your apartment, looking about in the holy mess that is your home. Clothes, takeout boxes and scraps of leftover cyberware from earlier upgrades litter every conceivable inch of space. It smells cramped and of old pizza scraps, there's dust everywhere and the inch-thick TV-screen suspended on one of the walls is aging like you wouldn't believe (you're still looking for a good projector alternative), but it's your home.
>>
>>321404
You waste no time removing your coat and top, throwing them to the already-present pile of unwashed clothing, looking over the mess that is your damaged chassis.

Luckily, it seems to be just the chassis for the most parts. Large cracks go across the enforced plastic-silicone shell and there are a few holes, but there's only minimal internal damage, which is what actually matters. Your chassis, you can patch up. The actual augmentations? That's what sucks up money like you wouldn't believe. Once you're done making sure that nothing serious is damaged, you eject your battery pack from your stomach. You're not going to need much more energy than what the generators attached to your bloodstream provides while you're not using any of your big augmentations. For the time being, you put the battery down and hook it to the wall for some charging.

Sitting back, you activate your palm projector, looking over your earnings for now. Hm... Not bad. You could get yourself some nifty new toys with this.

Then there's also the matter of the head you took with you. Kind of a freaky thing to do in retrospect, but you don't know if he has any augmentations in his brain. Perhaps memory storage. That could shed some light on your earlier questions, if you find someone to find and extract that stuff.

Upgrading Trish:
Upgrades of different kinds can be purchased with Combat Points, earned from contracts. These can range from increasing base abilities to new augmentations to new gear for expanding your arsenal.

Contacts:
While at home, Trish can contact her various associates in the law-abiding or criminal world. These can be used for different things, from simple socializing to finding new information or hacking locked hardware you've found.

Upgrade High-Frequency Longsword: Either upgrade your vibro-blade's Piercing tag to Piercing 3 or improve its damage to +7. [50cp]

I'm actually not giving much mechanical information on any upgrades before you buy them on purpose. The intent is to have you buy them for what they are, then get the mechanics, if that makes sense.

>>321626
Metal is all over the place here. Steel is the #1 most common building material, you're not going to be running out of things to run on anytime soon.
>>
As for piercing: Enemies have hidden armor and health values, which is one of the things I'm keeping track of with damage rolls and all that. Every point of armor removes one point of damage, and every point of piercing makes you ignore one point of armor.
>>
I now realize that there is literally no reason to purchase pierce over damage. Immediate tweak: Piercing upgrade improves Pierce by 2, not 1.
>>
>>321580
We use blast processing a ton.

Definitely get the Blast Processing upgrade.

I'd rather get Defensive Measures than Extension, because nothing ruins a cool style streak faster than getting your face pummeled into the ground.
>>
The general consensus I'm seeing right now is Blast Processing and Extension. One vote against, sure, but >>321705 is a minority there, sad to say.

Current chosen upgrades:
Blast Processing
Extension

This will spend 150/278 Combat Points. Any other purchases that catch anyone's interests?

Putting a vote in to upgrade the peircing of our vibro-blade.

It had some trouble dealing with the androids military grade armour, so upgrading it to counter high armour would make it a reliable weapon to deal with tough foes.

Undecided between magnetic soles (1) or Camo (2), let the dice decide.

Alright, so current list with those votes in mind:
Blast Processing [50]
Extension [100]
Sword: Piercing [50]
Magnetic Soles [75]

For a total of 275. Does anyone have any objections? Waiting ten minutes.

I think piercing upgrade on the vibro-blade's a good idea.

With all the votes for magnetic soles, I hope we have lots of metallic environments. :P

You immediately purchase some new cyberware and commission upgrades for some of your current makes, while also sending in your vibro-blade for refinement. This effectively uses up most of the money you got from the last contract, but it's hopefully going to make you more effective in the foreseeable future.

Well, that's what we want to establish. Presumably we have parents, and, we're still young enough that they have good odds of still being alive, ya?

We weren't always an assassin, presumably, so we'd have childhood friends same as most.

Then we'd also have the dangerous acquaintances we've made at work. We might even get assigned to work with one of them some time.

Oooh, that's a good compromise between work and friend time, but it'd be more work for the QM.

>>321944

Calling up friends is absolutely an option between business and such. In fact, I encourage it! You can even get some interaction out of Trish's contacts, honestly. But that's neither here nor there.

For now, contracts.

Well, after that upgrade you're kind of hurting for cash and as such, it's time to look for more work. Let's see what we have going for us here...

Seems like two of your contacts have filtered some possible clients onwards to you. Let's see what we got going for us here...

>Assassination. Target: Mid-profile politician. Average pay. Client Association: Rival political party
>Muscle for break-in. Fair pay. Client Association: Organized crime.
>>
>>322039

I feel the need to stay out of the organized crime scene, at least until the Thunderbolts cool off. Let's go with the assassination.

Hm... A break-in is something simple that you probably could do. Easy money. That said, you'd prefer to let the organized crime world cool down a bit, especially since you may or may not have messed up something pretty big without really meaning to. For now, offing some guy whose opinions don't fit your client's opinions is something you can do.

Some quick taps on the holographic screen and you're back at your list of contacts, tapping your arranger's name (or alias, you suppose). "RECORDING VOICE" pops up on the screen and you speak.

"Hey, babe. I'm heading for that assassination gig you proposed to me. Mind contacting that politician and setting up a meeting spot for them and me? Thanks."

Yeah, yeah. Sue you, you're old fashioned and still send voice messages. With some people, you prefer it that way. Besides, it's distorted across these channels, it's not like anyone is going to trace you by your voice.

Well, you're already at your contacts, so let's see who else you could probably get some use out of right now... Who to contact...

>"Charlie", a skilled hacker you've had some contact with in the past. He could probably break open any digital lock you've been running into, given some time.
>"Emily", your middleman between yourself and your clients. She's a trusted face in the city underground and if there's someone you could trust on to get the latest news on what's happening in the criminal world, it's this gal.
>"Buck", you're not sure how, but Buck's somehow made a friend in every legal institution you could imagine. You don't talk too often but when you do, he usually uses his friends among the police or the local political powerhouses to blow some heat off of you. You couldn't ask for a better partner when push comes to shove, as he's sure to remind you.
>"Sandra", your main contact in the underground cyberware scene. Not only does she know the market and how to get whatever you could need to get you to kick even more ass than what is normal, she might be able to help you with that... Well. That head, before it starts rotting.

>>
Contacting Sandra doesn't really necessitate too much waiting. She has a similar augmented computer as your own, meaning she's more or less always reachable. Hitting her name, or well, alias you suppose, you initiate a call.

Like clockwork, it only takes a moment or two to answer, a larger screen suddenly projected from your hand. You see the tools and mess that could only belong in a cyberware lab in the background, telling you that it's quite likely she was working on something. Of course, you also see Sandra herself. She is just as augmented as you are, but designed for practicality, not combat. Further confirming your thoughts that she was working on something is not only the sour look on her face, but also the fact that she's wearing a simple, dirty tanktop, showcasing the numerous millimeter-deep lines running along her arms, neck and upper torso. Or well, that's all you see, anyway, no matter how much you've asked. Though most of her chassis is clearly intended to imitate skin, she has also decided to cover it in a mess of curving, black lines. Complicated patterns not unlike the tattoos of the past, spreading from her shoulders and down the entirety of her arms. As clearly visible by the end she's resting her chin in, her fingers are clearly metallic, ending in various tools. Her hair is a chest-long mess of white locks and her eyes are a neon green color.

"What do you want, Trish?" Yeah you're clearly bothering her. Her tone is a grumble, not unlike something that would come from the kind of late teenager her chassis resembles, even though you know for certain she's at least in her mid-twenties. You can't help but grin. She's hilarious (and vaguely adorable) when she's like this.

"Nice to see you too, babydoll." Your tone and choice of wording does little to hide how much fun you're having with this. On the contrary, it only seems to provoke an eyeroll from the cybertechnician.

"Get to the point. Did you damage your chassis again?"

...Well, to be fair, you did. But that's only part of what you're calling about.

"Weeeell, a few scratches here and there, buuut." Raise up head. "I wanted to see what's been going inside this."
>>
"Hey, what can I say?" You make a shrug, grin still wide on your face. "I got a line of work where I get beaten up a lot, sometimes my chassis cracks. No big deal, all that means is that I get those fingers running all over me when they're putting me back together-"

"What do you want, Trish?"

Oooohhhhh, you were definitely interrupting something important. You just laugh at her tone, leaning back with your free hand resting behind your head.

"Well you know, I was doing my usual romp. Broke into some place, killed some guy, the normal thing. Or that's whar I thought anyway, until a goddamn combat android shows up. As in one of the high-end ones."

Sandra pauses at that, giving you a notably sharper look now. "What?"

"Yeah. It wasn't even a politician or big security boss who you'd expect to have that kind of gear either. It was a damn Thunderbolt associate."

"That... Doesn't sound right."

"It doesn't, does it? Get this, then." You make a bit of a dramatic pause, if only to annoy your conversation partner.

"The place I was at was filled to the brim with cyberware. Thousands of different makes."

"Thousands? Trish, that's not-"

"Viable for the market? Yeah, I know. We'd already know if that kind of tech was rolling out for anyone to buy en masse. It's almost as if they're gearing up for something."

Sandra seems to mull this information over for a while, then shoots you another of her looks. "So what do you want me to do about that?"

"Well, I got this." You raise up the head in clear sight for the camera, which prompts Sandra to curse loudly and actually stagger back from her screen. A reaction which actually makes you laugh. "Oh c'mon, you dig in people's bodies all the time. What's the problem? This guy was involved and he might have some memory storages augmented in here. I thought you could pick up some answers for us."

Once she calms down, Sandra's tone remains skeptical. "...Okay, I'm going to ignore the moral issues here, god knows we're not his best children, but that data usually terminates upon the owner's death to avoid that kind of stuff. I could pull something out, but it's likely to be all corrupted..."

You snap your fingers, shooting her a smirk. "I got just the guy for that. Swing by and I'll give you our pal here." You waggle the head a bit. "You know, before he starts to rot."

You make another thoughtful pause, then add "Speaking of swinging, y'know, while you're coming by we could also..."

"No, Trish."

You sigh and make a shrug. "Worth a shot."

She just grumbles, clearly about to end the transmission. "Whatever, I'll come by once I'm done with my current order. I'll hurry it up, the longer we wait the harder it'll be to extract anything. No promises still, though."

"Great! Knew I could count on you, babe."

She turns back to her work, not even acknowledging the last comment. "I'll tell you when I'm at our usual dropzone, Trish."

"Gotcha."

And with that, the production closes.

>"Charlie", a skilled hacker you've had some contact with in the past. He could probably break open any digital lock you've been running into, given some time.

From one nerd to another. You scroll down to Charlie on your contacts list and make another call. You have no idea how he does what he does, might as well be magic to you, but there's no lock that this guy can't crack. He's been invaluable in the past and he's going to prove just as useful now, you're sure.

True to habit, Charlie shows up on the screen even faster than Sandra did. Never leaves his computer, that one. By how he's moving his hands, it's apparent that he's still using a hands-on rig still. A bit aged compared to the projectors, but no one can deny that you can cram some impressive computing power in there.

Charlie is a youth with strawberry red hair and matching eyes. The guy doesn't have too impressive a chassis unlike you or your previous conversational partner, but he's still lined with artificial plastic musculature. He looks alright you suppose, but there's still a bit of natural nerd in there. You guess he just didn't care.

"Hey, egghead." You call out as soon as he picks up, moving the head out of view. Charlie doesn't need to see that stuff.

"Hey Trish, what's it about nooooohhhhh..." His voice trails off as he actually glances at the screen, but he regains his composure shortly. "So, uh, any real reason you're calling me up in your bra."

Taking a short moment to glance over your cracked chassis, you proceed to shrug in response. "Don't get your hopes up pal. There's some stuff I need opened up."

Charlie sighs, but nods. "I figured that was the case. What's it this time?"

Aye, locked computer first.

Yeah I totally forgot last time. That's absolutely something I'll add next thread.
> LEARNING EXPERIENCE

"Well there's plenty of stuff actually, but first of all is this thing." You fish up Chester's personal computer, a paper-thin rectangle completely made out of glass on one side and polished, stainless steel on the other. You wave it around a bit, noting the screen's red flash as you hold it properly. "Got this off of some corporate bigwig and I'm pretty curious on what's inside. As you can probably tell, it's signature-locked and the only guy who can open it's dead."

Charlie groans, resting his face in one of his palms. "Bloody body signature locks? You couldn't have gotten something more complex?" An exasperated sigh emits from the redhead. "I can do it, but it's going to take a while."

You snap your fingers, pointing at the screen (and thus camera) with a grin. "Awesome! Knew I could count on you, Charlie-boy. Usual dropzone?"

"Sure, I guess. Just know that you-"

"Yeah yeah I owe you, I know. Dully noted. All that stuff." Charlie kind of looks up, clearly bothered by your interruption. He's not speaking, though, giving you the breathing room to

"Well, anyway." You continue, exploiting the unhappy pause your quick retort caused. "Y'know how it is, things to do and places to be."

"Hm? Oh, yeah, yeah, right." Charlie replies, clearly not terribly sad to see you go. "Just tell me when the computer's at the dropzone and I'll go get it. It'll be pretty tough, but nothing I haven't done before."

"Great, fantastic. Seeya then." You dismiss, before closing the chat. Always quick to whine, that one. Sheesh, you get it, his work his hard. No need for him to repeat it all the time. Oh well, you can't talk too much shit about Charlie. He's a good guy to have about.

That should wrap up everything your contact book had to offer for now. You shut off your projector once again, deciding to make it to the bathroom instead. Normally, your chassis is waterproof, but with all the cracks and small holes the android caused you... Yeah. It'd be embarrassing to have to take your augmentations to Sandra because of short-circuiting of all things. As such, you opt for some dry cleaning solutions.

Your meeting with the new client is going to be in a few days, but for now... You're undressing and crashing into bed. You always feel awfully sluggish after detaching your batterg cells and after the shit you faced today, you've earned a bit of a rest.

----------

I'm going to have to head out for a bit! Probably just a couple hours or so, things are happening in real life. Sorry for the really sporadic replies today.

what do you real life? naver drop the role play ahha
its ok do what you gota do just dont forget us

Okay that took way longer than it should've, but I'm back.

----------

The rain from three days ago completely blew over within short notice. Instead it became hot. Almost unbearably so. The day after the hit on Chester, you dropped his head and computer off for the respective gearheads to work with and the day after that you had your body repaired and the new cyberware installed. Add another day of rest and healing and you were up and ready for action again.

Good thing, too. Your client this time was a lady with an undeniably pretty chassis, but you could tell from the way she moved and spoke that she was at least three times as old as you were. Your meeting was short, brief and to the point and honestly? That was a lifesaver. You hated to wear this dark coat of yours during hot days, but keeping up appearances was important. The customers wanted dark, sharp and dangerous, so that's what you give them. Your target is another woman. Michelle Clarke. Apparently the two have been fighting tooth and claw lately about some new bill. Economics that frankly fly right over your head, but it's apparently a big enough deal to have someone killed over now that your target is getting close to having it passed.

While she's doing business here in the area, Clarke is staying at the city embassy, a large high-security building where you should be expecting to run into combat androids. Luckily the pay is pretty good. Average for this kind of work, but still pretty good.

You currently stand in the "main" room of your apartment, making sure everything's ready to go. The window is open, your primitive as all hell fan spinning with a monotonous buzzing, doing very little to help with the heat. Sword is good to go... Revolver's fine... All your new cybertech is working as expected.

Anything else to do before you get going?

Gathering everything you need, you leave your apartment and back to your hoverbike. Ah... Bless this thing, honestly. It's been with you through thick and thin and it was practically the first thing you bought since you moved out of mom's. Once again sitting down on your very favorite vehicle, you allow it to start up, taking a moment to let the blue light emerging from the polished black mass and the low humming emerging from within. The bike makes that characteristic whine as it dashes out and onto the street, joining the rest of the city noise.

You park and get off near the embassy. A large, towering building in dark chrome that practically glitters from the evening lights. The sunset is coloring the sky a warm, red hue that makes a sharp contrast against the embassy's faint blue glow. This is something completely different than the grimy downtown streets that made up the Thunderbolts' territory. This is uptown, all sleek, polished steel and more glass than what would ever be necessary.

You're likely to be expecting some proper security inside. Combat androids aren't out of the question, but plain augnented guards isn't out of the question either. You want to be smart about this, lest you bring some real heat onto this place. Wouldn't be the first time you fought off the police, but it's still a pain.

So how do you want to do this?

>Try to sneak in up front. Oddly enough they alwaya forget to properly guard the main entrance.

Your IP changes quite often.
>>
>>326027
Shalk that down to my inactivity. My net's utter shit I got to switch to my phone to properly QM. I should get that fixed.
>>
Actually, until I get this worked out and can get my formatting back, the contract's probably going to have to be put on hold for a bit. Fucking hell...
>>
>>326184
I assume you know this but I'll say it anyway, if you want formatting back you need to use same IP you used to create OP.
>>
>>326200
Yeah. Just gonna kick my actual router till it feels like working.
>>
Fucking hell this does not seem to work. It's quite likely that this thread dies before I worked out the issue guys. I'm really sorry, guys. I should be up to QM again this Monday or Tuesday.

On the bright side, I got a twitter at @masheenQM that you can follow if that's something you're into idk

This is a goddamn mess and I'm sorry

>Stalk around is my vote, even to just analyze their defense. It's the option where we can go "Nah, didn't work, try one of the other two" without breaking our cover. And we're all about analyzing for weak points.

Pssh, hardly, and losing the formatting is a little on the disappointing side, but hardly a deal breaker. We're here for your writing skills, not your text formatting. :P
