Welcome to the world of Pokemon! Last time, you made a decision about Robin, trained, and had gay times in the shower.

You find yourself in an odd predicament. The lab before you is cluttered: candy wrappers are carelessly thrown about, unwashed beakers containing strange fluids litter the countertops, and the area near the only bookshelf in the room is cluttered with books scattered throughout the floor, couch, and coffee table. Kori is staring at you with daggers in her eyes, and you were hoping it would take at least a week before she got this upset at you. Standing behind her is the man in charge, Professor Plato, and he seems to think that you’re his new recruits. Katie is at your side and she seems to be waiting for you to make a move or decision. You find yourself between a Roggenrola and a hard place. At least, you assume that’s how that saying goes.

“Actually-” Kori attempts.

“Yes well,” Professor Plato interrupts. “Equip them with lab coats and have them fill out the appropriate paperwork.”

“But that isn’t-”

“Yes, yes, I understand, but I’m a busy man,” the Professor says as he waves his hand dismissively. He walks away without another word. You don’t think you’ve ever seen Kori this flustered before. She turns back to look at you, her face full of accusation.

You…

“Hey, so what’s going on?” You ask. You always thought professors were nice, courteous people. This guy seems like an unorganized jackass.

“Less talking, more explaining,” you hear coming from the back of the lab. As if to answer your question, Kori opens her arms to indicate the lab and the professor are her main problem. She clears her throat.

“We here at Project,” Kori takes out a small piece of paper, “RADUS are dedicated to the study and development of unique strains of Pokemon. It is said that a certain variety are born with shifted pigment cells that change their color. Oddly, this also gave them a boost of natural talent. We want to study just how this rare phenomena works.”

“So you study shiny Pokemon?” Maybe this could be worth your time after all.

“Among other things,” Kori says, a strict professional look on her face. How long has she been here, you think to ask. Before you can, Kori hands you both several papers stapled together. “Applications, if you wish to join.” Kori gives you a warning glance before walking to the back of the lab.

You…

Kori seems to hate it here. Then again, you’ve never seen her like anything. You turn to Katie, a question in your throat. Should we join her? You want to say.

Her expression tells you that you shouldn’t abandon a teammate. At least you think it does. There’s definitely some determination there. You give her a half smile and a nod. It’s decided.

You begin filling out the paperwork. It’s pretty standard stuff that asks for your name, address, phone number, trainer ID number, mother’s maiden name, and any relevant work history. You’re tempted to put “Amateur Detective” under work history but you haven’t actually done any official cases, not unless you count the time you solved the case of “The Mysterious Missing Cookie.” It turns out that Luke did it. For a Slakoth, he can be extraordinarily fast.

After you’re done, you go to the back of the lab. This area is less cluttered. You see a large machine with pokeball indentions on it and a few computers scattered about. On the back wall is a door labeled ‘Specimens.’ You hand out your application to Kori, but Professor Plato takes it instead.

“Hmm…” and “Yes…” are said periodically as he reviews the application with a look of passionate interest. It isn’t a very long application but the Professor seems to be taking his time reading through it. Honestly, you can’t get too good a read on this guy. Finally, he says, “Well done. I accept.” The professor opens a drawer and rifles through it. He takes out a rubber stamp before stamping the word ‘Approved’ on your application. He hands it over to Kori before saying, “File that for me, dear.” She takes the application then drops it on the floor. The professor acts like that never happened.

(1/2)
>>
“Your duties will be to measure the battle application of any specimen our resident capture specialist can get her hands on.” The professor looks through a few more drawers. “We haven’t had any luck finding any. As you can tell, they are quite rare.” He takes out a red device. “Though I’ve heard rumors of one out in the desert. There’s even a reward for its capture. The person who posted that reward would be me. Find it, and I will compensate you nicely.” You receive the strange red device. It looks familiar to one Detective Scarlet would use. “That which you hold in your hand in the updated luxury model Pokedex. It can be used to analyze a Pokemon’s known moves, condition, and strengths.” Holy shit. And all you have to do is find a Pokemon for this guy?

“I’ll also expect you to periodically do a few jobs for me. Expect a phone call within the next week.” Huh.

“Will I be paid for these jobs?” You ask.

“No. I’m afraid I don’t have the funding to pay every assistant I hire, but you will be compensated with knowledge.” What is this guy? An afterschool special?

“And these jobs…?”

“They should be fairly standard,” Kori says. The professor looks at her incredulously and she keeps a neutral expression.

“Yes well, all you’ll have to do is collect samples for me while you’re out in the field,” the professor says. You’re pretty sure there will be more to the job, but you like the feeling of this new Pokedex in your hands. It’s very ergonomic.

You look over at Kori. She seems much more relaxed than when you first came in. There’s even a small smile tugging at her face. You shrug. “That doesn’t sound so bad,” you say, though you think it could be a little annoying to be at this guy’s beck and call. You hope that he doesn’t abuse it.

“Right, well off with ya,” the professor says. “I have business to take care of, and I don’t want to get distracted by my assistants.” He ushers both Kori and you out. The door slams behind you and you hear a clicking noise. Did that dude just lock you out?

Kori punches you in the arm. You wince a little. Was that supposed to be playful? “I warned you to leave,” she says. Her words are slightly playful and she’s definitely smiling. Yeah, you guess that punch was playful, but it still hurt.

“I couldn’t leave a teammate behind,” you say. “And neither could Katie.” You look around for your blonde friend and realize you might have left her inside with the professor. Well shit. So much for never leaving a teammate behind.

“She’s right behind you,” Kori says. You must’ve looked panicked because when you turn around, you see Katie standing there lowering her Omnivice from her ear down to her purse pocket. She raises her eyebrow.

“I thought I lost you,” You say lamely.

“Nah, I decided to sneak away while you distracted that guy. Working for him seemed kind of stupid.” Wow thanks Katie. “But anyways, I heard some really cool news. The mayor of River City has an event planned where anyone who joins gets a free bike! It’s happening in three days, so we should wrap up our business here.”

“Sounds fun,” you say, mostly to try to contribute to the conversation rather than having something substantial to say. Damn that was lame. Is your brain shutting off because you’re in close proximity to cute girls? You’ll have to test that theory out some other day.

“So why did you decide to visit?” Kori asks. She’s still wearing the lab coat. Weren’t you supposed to receive one?

“Oh right! We wanted to go catch Pokemon,” Katie says. She reaches into her purse and produces a map of the city. “I talked to some people, and they recommended a few spots.”

“If we want to catch that biking event,” Kori says. “Then Alex should set up his reservation for this city’s gym.”

“Right!” Katie responds. “Since you don’t have a lot of badges, Alex, then the next appointment could be months away.” Just how do they know these things? Is this the power of reading? Did they actually pay attention in school. Regardless, your companions look at you to make a decision.

You…

You disengage Gojira’s pokeball from your belt and look at it. You did promise the little guy a shot at the Elite Four. The only way to do that is to gain the recognition of at least 8 gym leaders. You’ve heard rumors that those who manage to beat the 16 gym leaders of the Chante Region are able to skip the preliminaries, though as far as you’ve heard, there’s ever only one or two people who manage to do it each time the Pokemon League is held. Perhaps you’ll be one of those people?

“When’s the next Pokemon League tournament?” You ask. Katie starts tapping at her Omnivice, but Kori responds faster.

“It’s in 9 months,” she says. You raise your eyebrow. “I was planning on challenging the gyms as well,” she adds as an explanation. Huh. Didn’t your Battle Instructor tell you that trainers and battlers were the ones who challenged the gyms while catchers tended to be researchers.

“You’re hoping to change the stereotype,” you say. Kori nods her head. “Great! Then let’s go fill out those applications.” You start marching away before stopping and turning back to your friends. “And just how do we do that?”

Kori rolls her eyes, while Katie giggles a little. “You can do it online,” Katie explains. “But you’ll get a faster appointment if you go in person. Um,” she checks her device. “Judging from this distance, it’ll take us 2 hours walking or half an hour by bus to get to her gym if we decided to head there right away. There’s a few paths we could take if you wanted to catch pokemon if we walked, but there’s a possibility of getting lost or not getting to the gym on time to apply before they shut down.”

“How many hours until the gym closes?” You ask.

“Looks like we have 5 hours,” Katie says. Not bad. If you decided to walk and gave yourselves two hours dedication to catching, you could definitely make it. Then again, you could just take a bus and get that over with then decide to try catching Pokemon.

You…
>Take a bus. It’s the fastest way.
>Walk. Kill two pidgeys with one stone.
>Fill it out online. There will be other gyms out there.

I've been pretty out of it today, but I think I'm getting back into the groove of writing. Hope you guys are having some fun.

“Let’s walk,” you say. “Kill two pidgeys with one stone.” Having a third (fourth, no, fifth) member will make your team look way more official.

“I’ve always hated that expression,” Katie tells you. “Just think of those poor Pidgey!” She starts mimicking two bird pokemon with her hands. “What if they were just friends hanging out?” Now she chirps a little, using her hands to convey two birds playing around. It’s a little childish but mildly entertaining. “Next thing you know, BAM! They’re dead.” Katie falls to the floor dramatically, overacting how dead she is. One hand clutches her heart, and her tongue is sticking out of her mouth. You imagine X’s where her eyes ought to be.

“Are you secretly a cartoon character?” You ask her. Katie opens one eye to look at you, winks(?), then brings a finger to her to shh you.

“So what path should we take?” Kori asks. You see that she’s holding Lugh in her arms. Just when did that happen?

Katie gets up quickly and fiddles with her device. “Um, okay. There’s three choices. Well two if we want to avoid traffic and be time conscientious people.” The Omnivice makes a few beeping noises as Katie plays around with it. “Let’s see. We could follow the river for a bit and look for water pokemon, and there also seems to be a hiking trail we can follow. That should have bug, grass, and flying types. Well those are the most common anyways.”

>”The river path sounds good.”

>>”What was that third option?”
You had my interest, but now you have my attention.
Gas the kikes, race war now.
>>
>>310187
“Hey wait, hold up,” you say. “What’s that third option?” It’s always great to play with all the cards on the table. You assume that’s how that expression goes.

“There’s a bridge that crosses the river. The third path is mostly urban, so there won’t be many wild pokemon about. If we’re lucky, we might find a few bug or normal types, but mostly there’ll be other people,” Katie explains.

“There’s also a chance of trainers stopping us for battles,” Kori says.

You decide to go through…
>The river path.
>The hiking trail.
>The urban path.

“Well, I do like the thought of battling trainers,” you say. You hear more beeping coming from Katie’s direction. “But I think I want to bolster my team up first. Let’s hit that river path.” You hear Katie groan then a few more beeps.

“Alright, if you don’t change your mind, I have us set for the path leading through the river.” Katie adjusts her purse bag thing so the single strap goes across her chest rather than hang limply on her arm. She takes Lugh from Kori’s arms. “Just remember that if Lugh sees you catch pokemon or battle or whatever will make him better at that thing.”

“Well actually, I was thinking we could go…” You stop, smiling and laughing, much to Katie’s expression of annoyance. She lightly taps you on the arm but it doesn’t hurt the way Kori’s punches do. That settled, you all adventure outside. The sun is still up, but it is nowhere near its zenith. You estimate that you have a couple of hours before it sets.

The trek there is a little nice if warm. You notice dark clouds in the distance but make nothing of it. You ask your companions questions about the league that you should probably know going forward, like the ranking system. Turns out that they track the number of victories and losses you have as well as how many badges or medals you collect. According to Kori, there’s a psychic network that somehow keeps track of accomplishments and the like? She uses big words you don’t understand, and you find yourself nodding to what she’s saying rather than frequently asking her to explain every term she uses.

It takes maybe half an hour to reach the river, and you think it’s about 30 meters wide. A small beach forms where the river meets land, and you see a few people fishing. Had you had more time, you would consider borrowing a rod and trying your luck. Instead, you have your team spread out to see what they can catch.

It doesn’t take long for you to find a round, blue mouse Pokemon. It has circular ears with pink inside and white dots on its cheeks. It stands on a ball loosely connected to its body in a zigzag shape. You take out your new fancy Pokedex, and it starts analyzing the wild Pokemon. The information it displays so far is that this is an Azurill and it has the ability Thick Fat. It appears to have one unusual move, but it doesn’t know which.

The best way if probably for you to decide some arbitrary number we have to roll and keep it static throughout the quest. It could be 1, 8912, 1488, but as long as it is consistently the same number the odds are 1 in 8912.
>>
>>310326
Huh. Was hoping for more votes. Alright. Roll a 1d100 again.

I think I'll make it so that if anyone rolls a 1 or a 8192, they'll get a shiny. But I kind of want to keep the guessing game. It adds a little variety.

This pokemon looks pretty weak, and it isn’t even a water type. You decide you can find better. There’s some commotion downstream so you turn to investigate, leaving the Azurill to its own devices. A little exploration, some hopping from rock to rock, rewards you with the sight of Kori battling a Lotad. The small blue Pokemon with a lilypad on its back uses some kind of grass type attack. Green tendrils of energy go from Kori’s Pokemon to the wild Lotad.

You take out your Pokedex and reveal that Kori is fighting with a Paras. The small orange creature retaliates with an attack of its own. Its claw glow a light green color before hitting the opponent. Your Pokedex informs you that that was a Fury Cutter. Damn, you love this thing.

“Pokemon thrive on violence,” Kori says. How does she even know you’re here? She never turned around, her whole focus on the battle. “It’s the way they survive and grow. To that effect, Pokemon tend to challenge others close to their level. No matter where you go, you’ll find something around your level. That is unless you go to an area that’s obviously belongs to a territory leader.” Kori points further downstream but you don’t see anything different. It’s just more brush and river and deerling trails.

You leave, searching around some more and bump into Katie. “Hey, I found an Azurill. It was too cute to not catch. Um, Lugh may or may have seen my attempts at capture. Obviously, I’m no expert, but…” She shrugs her shoulders. You look at your watch and realize it’s been an hour already. Time goes by quickly when you can’t find any good wild Pokemon to catch.

Frustrated, you call out your two Pokemon. Their happy faces banish any bad thoughts lurking in your mind. “Okay guys, let’s find ourselves a new partner!” They cheer; Gojira takes his place near you while Vulcan scouts ahead. You follow him at a leisurely pace. Perhaps your Pokemon will have better luck than you.

“It always strikes me how glad your pokemon are to see you,” Katie says, walking besides you. “It took me a few months to get Iggs to look at me like that.” You’ve never heard of this Iggs but you accept the compliment regardless. Lugh barks, and Katie sets him down. “Looks like Lugh wants to help out,” she says. This – this is nice. You feel an urge to hold Katie’s hand as you both follow Vulcan and Lugh, both leading you around the brush while avoiding the river.

You hear Vulcan yelp as he gets hit by a spray of water. Lugh barks but returns to yours and Katie’s side. Ahead, you see a bipedal, blue crocodile with red spines on its back and tail. A quick glance at your Pokedex confirms that it is a Totodile, though its ability is only Torrent. The quick assessment feature tells you it knows a few extra moves but it needs a longer scan before it can tell you which those are.

You consider throwing a Pokeball and trying to end this before it gets messy, but Vulcan has his own pride as a Pokemon. “Alright Vulcan, we’re up!” You call out. He heads your call and begins growling at the wild pokemon in front of him. [+5 to Vulcan’s next action]

You take out a pokeball now just to have it ready.

You take a quick look at the environment around you. There’s brush to hide in and you’re dangerously close to the river. You’re not sure, but maybe the wild Totodile will run away if you injure it too much. You consider trying to lead it away from the river or trying to get between it and the river.

You’re not letting that wild pokemon escape. It’s going to join you, whether it likes it or not (but hopefully it’ll enjoy joining you). You think about starting out with a good offense, but a quick survey of the area gives you a better idea.

You notice that the wild Pokemon is on dry land, and there are no pokemon tracks on any of the mud within 5 meters of it other than your own Pokemon’s. Maybe it dislikes the mud? That’s a good enough assumption to make. What did Detective Holt say? “You must only make assumptions based on the logical train of thought allowed by the clues you gather. Do not be dissuaded if you are wrong, for that only means you’re closer to being right.” Inspiring words.

“Vulcan, use mud-slap, but scatter the mud around your opponent.” Vulcan quickly jumps into a muddle (muddy puddle) and starts splashing about. To the untrained eye, it’s just random splashing, but… Yeah. It’s mostly random splashing. Still, Vulcan gets a good amount of it around the whole battlefield.

The wild Totodile wasn’t expecting that. Mud hit both its eyes and open mouth, causing it to slip before it could land a physical attack on your Pokemon. It also appears that your attack lowered the opponents accuracy. [Next hit gets a +5 due to the opponent being prone.]

What will you do?
>Order a move:
>>Headbutt, to weaken its health.
>>Harden, now’s a good time to raise your defenses.

Now’s the opportune moment to strike! “Vulcan, hit him hard with a Headbutt!” Your shiny chrome pokemon rushes forward just as the wild Totodile was getting up. Vulcan’s head hits the blue crocodile pokemon hard on its belly, and Totodile is thrown back at least 10 feet.

You think you might’ve heard a cracking sound, but you aren’t sure. That was definitely a critical hit.

“Good job,” you hear Kori’s voice nearby, though you’re too concentrated on the battle to turn around and confirm that it’s her. “You saw the place where Vulcan hit that Pokemon? Every Totodile has a weak spot where their bellies are. The yellow markings on their chest point directly to that spot. That’s where you should aim when throwing a pokeball.”

You see the wild pokemon struggling to get up. This looks like your best chance to catch it.

“This should be pretty easy,” Kori says.

“Yeah, you totally got this!” Katie cheers. There’s no way you want to disappoint her, nor do you want to disappoint the eager baby pokemon watching.

The pokeball heads in a straight line from your hand to the Totodile. You don’t quite strike the belly, instead hitting it on the head just as it managed to stand up. The ball opens up and the wild pokemon is surrounded by red light before disappearing inside. The pokeball hits the ground and shakes…

Once.

Twice.

Thrice.

And it is caught! You release the breath you didn’t even realize you were holding in. You did it; you’ve caught yourself a new partner. You jump up in joy, and both Vulcan and Katie join you. You retrieve the pokeball and have the pokedex scan it to give you more detail on your new partner.

In the meantime, what’s going to be her nickname?

The Pokedex has a loading bar as it scans the pokeball in your hands. So far, you have the gender of your most recent team member. “Hey Katie, do me a favor and look up goddesses of the nile. I think I remember one that sounds like the perfect name.”

Katie takes out her Omnivice and does so. I’m getting a few, she says, and shows you the screen. You point, and say, “There. Anuket. If I’m gonna go with a theme, then that sounds perfect.” Finally the screen on your Pokedex flickers and shows you a picture of a Totodile.

Uh-oh. Looks like Vulcan may have hit a little too hard. “Um,” you say, showing the Pokedex to Kori and Katie.

“I could take, um, Anuket back,” Katie says. “After all, both of you want to make an appointment, right?”

“I have patience,” Kori states. “I can go back and merely apply online. The waiting time is cut in half for S-rank individuals anyways.”

But Anuket is your Pokemon. Shouldn’t you be responsible for her? You look at your poketch and see that you have 2 hours left until the gym closes.

You decide to…
>Let Katie take Anuket back.
>Have Kori do it.
>Take Anuket back by yourself.
>Keep going. The stasis should keep Anuket safe?

“I’ll do it,” you say, but your words are met with immediate protest.

“There’s no way we’re leaving without our leader,” Kori says, while Katie murmurs, “I don’t even want to battle the gyms. That was your guys’ thing.”

“Guys listen, Anuket is my Pokemon now, which means she’s my responsibility,” you say. The other two quiet down. It’s obvious you have something more to say. “Now, we began a mission. Mind you, it isn’t an official mission, but it’s a mission nonetheless. I want to know that you can both continue on without me if anything gets dicey out there. Katie, don’t give me that look. We both know how dangerous it can get out there. Now, do you both trust me?”

“I do,” Katie says. It’s obvious she wants to add a ‘but’ to that. She doesn’t.

“We did decide you would be leader,” Kori states. “That doesn’t mean this isn’t a dumb decision. You’re the best suited to beating the gym.”

“It’s fine,” you say. “It’ll take me an hour to walk back, less so if I jog. And if I take a bus, I should get there before the gym closes. So, just wait for me there, will ya?” You look them both in the face. You know Katie doesn’t like this plan, but Kori nods her head and accepts it.

“Fine, but if you stand us up, I’ll beat you up.” With that said, Kori turns to leave. Katie looks at you for a moment before leaving as well. Lugh seems just as torn up as she is but decides to go with her in the end.

You sigh. At least your teammates obeyed your orders. It should be slightly easier to command them in the future. “Okay guys, let’s go make sure our teammate is safe.” That said, Vulcan and Gojira follow you as you begin a light job to the entrance of the path and towards the nearest Pokemon Center. Thankfully, your new Pokedex has a map of all pre-existing centers and you reach one within 15 minutes.

You enter and tell the nurse that one of your Pokemon is injured. She takes Anuket’s pokeball and releases the Totodile on top of the counter. Anuket rests, one arm resting on its chest. “Hey, you’re going to be fine,” you tell her. The nurse finishes doing her assessment before telling you, “Yes she will be. We’ll patch her up, but you shouldn’t strain her too much for a week. That means no training or battling. After that, your pokemon should be healthy enough to battle.” You thank the nurse, hand her Vulcan’s pokeball as well, and go sit down.

It’s just you and Gojira now, sitting on one of the couches.

You decide to text your teammates, letting them know that you’re okay and that your Totodile is getting treatment. You don’t get a response, but you assume that they’re busy hiking or battling or something. The nurse lady said it could take anywhere from 15 minutes to an hour, so you’re pretty much left to your own devices.

Rather than spend this time doing something dumb like watching the news or studying, you decide to be productive. “Hey Gojira, let’s get some ice cream or something,” you tell the little green reptilian. He nods his head and joins you as you go out in search of a shop of some kind.

It doesn’t take you long to stumble upon an electronics store. One of the displays is showing the Gojira vs. Mechas movies, and you and your pokemon sit outside on the sidewalk watching. You narrate what’s happening, except you tell your pokemon that Gojira is a misunderstood entity and that the mechas are just mean bullies. Your account of the narrative has Gojira doing its sacred duty of destroying old buildings, and you interpret all the screaming and running away as cheers or terror at the mechas instead of the 100 foot tall monster. All in all you do an okay job, but your pokemon seems awestruck with the movie.

“That’s an interesting interpretation,” you hear a familiar voice say behind you. You turn around and encounter that guy from the shower. You almost didn’t recognize him with clothes on and sunglasses.

“Oh, uh,” is all you manage to say. Shouldn’t you two be avoiding each other?

“What? You don’t recognize me?” He asks.

>”Nope, I have no clue who you are.”
>”You’re that shower pervert.”
>”I… I don’t want to talk to you.”

You say the first thing that springs to mind. “Aren’t you that shower pervert?”

The guy feigns an expression of hurt. “What? I was the one taking an innocent shower when you barged in. And you didn’t even compensate my simple request!”

“I – uh – well…” He knows your one true weakness! Awkwardness. “You don’t act like a normal guy,” you say.

“No shit. And wouldn’t you know my surprise when I find out that dumbass who barged into the clearly occupied shower turned out to be a celebrity.” He takes out a magazine of Pokemon Illustrated. It features a girl in a white silk costume, calling her the toughest elite four trainer. That’s not what this dude is pointing at. You see a blurb of your face with the words “mystery trainer’s secrets are unlocked… on page 45.”

“I’m on a magazine,” you say. When the fuck did that happen?

“Yeah, Alexander Greyson. And you wound me,” the guy says. What? “It’s me, Hephaestion! Remember that weird 20 year gap where people thought it was cool to name their children after famous Greek and Roman names? Dude, we grew up together. That wasn’t even the first time we bathed together either.” That – that name actually sounds familiar. You’re suddenly taken back to kindergarten when you met a strange kid and promised to be best friends forever.

“Y-you! I remember you!” And you almost can’t believe how weird your reunion was. Almost.

“Right, so let’s test how better you’ve gotten,” Heph says. “I challenge you to a battle!” You didn’t even feel the intense vibe you usually felt when meeting another trainer. So, your childhood friend wants a battle, does he?

You don’t really like this situation. You vaguely remember this guy and you only have one Pokemon with you at the moment. He also definitely knows more about you than you know about him.

You decide to use the oldest trick in the book. You give Hephaestion your best ‘oh my gosh what is that look’ and point at something behind him. The sucker turns around while you’re already running away, Gojira keeping up with you. It doesn’t take long for Heph to realize you tricked him. “H-hey,” he yells. “Don’t just walk away! That’s not cool man.”

“Sorry, I can’t! I have a pokemon waiting for me at the pokemon center and a bike sale that I want to catch!” You continue running and see that Heph gives a half-hearted chase. After a few blocks you’re already breathing hard, and you can see Gojira lagging behind. You recall him and keep going. Another peek behind you shows that Heph isn’t winded at all.

“Dude, I don’t mean any harm,” Heph calls out.

“Sorry, I can’t hear you over this tactical retreat,” you call back. That seems to do the trick. That, and you quickly hop from a cart to the top of a moving van to a roof. You see Heph stop, take off his sunglasses, and look you in the eye before the roof obscures you from his sight. You get the familiar chill down your spine that tells you you’ve made eye contact with another trainer. You don’t stop running though. A few more roof hops and quick shimmy down a flag pole takes you a good enough distance away that you feel comfortable catching your breath.

It doesn’t take long to get to the pokemon center, and you make sure there’s no one tailing you when you finally enter. “Greetings,” the nurse says. “Your pokemon are in top-tip shape. Just remember what I said about giving your Totodile a week of rest.” You thank the nurse and check your poketch. There’s still an hour left until the gym closes.

“Hey, uh, hold on,” you say to the nurse. “Sorry to bother you, but where’s the nearest bus stop?”

“Oh, that’s pretty simple. When you exit the pokemon center, take a left and go down two blocks. The bus stop should be next to a big rock. You can’t miss it.” You thank her then head out. It looks like the sun is already setting, so you wager you’ll get there in time for night to take over the city. In truth, you used to take the bus a lot before. Your mom wasn’t as established as she was now, so you both used public transportation or walked everywhere you went. Thankfully, Serenecity is full of health nuts and hippies, so walking and using public transportation isn’t considered weird. It’s actually considered environmentally conscientious. Whatever.

Your wait is thankfully a lonely one. There aren’t crazy hobos or smelly city people around. You decide to release Anuket and see that her midsection is wrapped in bandages. She curiously sniffs you before looking around. You sit down on the bench, and she sits near your feet. “Here, let me help you,” you say, and she allows you to cautiously put her on the bench next to you.

(1/2)
>>
You both sit there in silence. You feel Anuket look at you, but you don’t turn to look at her. “I haven’t actually taken a bus in a while,” you tell her. “The very last time I was on one was maybe 5 years ago? I was way more naïve then.” You look at her, and Anuket is looking up at you curiously. You continue your tale. “Well there was a man who would sit on the same spot every day. He always had this Teddiursa sitting next to him. At first I thought it was a teddy bear; the thing didn’t move. And one day the man sat there alone. I remember sitting next to him and asking him what happened. He told me in a very shaky voice that his precious partner died, and he cried. So I cried. And we kind of held each other. Anyways, my mom once told me not to talk to strangers, so I stopped getting on the bus.”

Anuket keeps looking up at you curiously. “I guess you wouldn’t really understand; I don’t really understand why I just told you that story. But thanks for listening. I’ve never really had someone who listened to me before…” An image of a young Hephaestion pops into your mind. Didn’t he used to listen to you make plans for becoming the best trainer of all time? You quickly wonder why you ran away. Then again, some paranoia can be useful.

You stand up, more to distract yourself than anything else. “I have an idea,” you say. You release Gojira and Vulcan. They both sniff you curiously before Vulcan starts walking around to explore and Gojira grabs your pants leg. “Hey guys, meet your new partner.” They both look at Anuket and she looks from you to them. They start talking to each other in growls and grunts. You’re not really sure what’s being said, but there seems to be some kind of understanding between them.

The bus arrives not too soon after. You retrieve your pokes and enter. It turns out that trainer IDs work as free bus passes, allowing you free access to further parts of the city. The ride is uneventful, and there’s only one other person on the bus besides the driver. She’s kind of cute, but she’s wearing a pink tracksuit. Yeah, I’d probably date her, you think, though you prefer Katie to her. She’s just cuter.

When the gym comes up in view, it’s the pink girl who signals the bus driver to stop. You get off with her and head over to the gym next to her. You’re both silent until you reach the entrance.

“You here to challenge the gym?” She asks.

“Yeah, I was hoping to make an appointment,” you say. You look around and fail to see your friends.

“Oh, I actually know plenty about this gym. Do you have any questions?”

“No thanks,” you tell her. That seemed to surprise her, since she looks taken aback.

“A-are you sure? I have some pretty good knowledge – Gym leader defeating knowledge.” You shrug.

“I have friends waiting for me inside,” you explain. You open the door and hold it open, clearly waiting for the strange girl to enter.

“I can do that by myself,” she says, trying to interject some frustration into her voice.

“Sorry,” you say. “I didn’t mean to offend. It’s just an automatic response available to everyone.” You let the door close on her face and enter the facility. It’s nice; you particularly like the 20 foot, pink statue of an ambiguous female figure. No wait, that’s not ambiguous at all. Those are definitely boobs. Is that even allowed?

You look around and you don’t see Katie or Kori. You go to a counter in the front and see that there’s no one else here. There’s a small bell on the counter. You ring it and the girl in the pink track suit appears from behind the counter. Was – was she waiting there underneath the counter?

“Um, uh, do you work here?”

She gives you a curious look. “Yeah I do. Nice to meet you,” she says, holding her hand out. You shake it. “The name’s Courtney.”

“Alex,” you say in response.

“Well Alex, what can I do for you today?”

“Two of my friends came here ahead of me. I was wondering if you’ve seen them.” You’re not sure how. She got off the bus at the same time you did. She pulls a monitor up from behind the counter. Was she hiding that down there? A holographic keyboard appears in front of her and she types a few words. Courtney turns the monitor so you can see it. You see a camera looking down at the two of you.

“I checked the tapes. There’s only been one other person here today.” She shows you who and you see Otto there. Looks like your rival beat you here.

“No, I know that guy, but he’s not the person I’m looking for.”

“Sorry, hun. There’s been nobody else here today.”

You walk away and try calling Katie. It goes straight to voicemail. The same thing happens to Kori. You start to worry. There’s no way they could be in trouble, is there?

You…

You almost forgot why you even came here. “Hey Courtney, I’d like to get an appointment with the gym leader.”

“Alright,” she says. “When?”

“Um, I thought it was notoriously difficult to get an appointment here. Shouldn’t you be telling me which times are available?” If things you read about the way fancy restaurants do business applies here, then you assume that’s how things work.

“Oh. Right,” Courtney says. You were pretty sure you saw a look of confusion on her face, but she quickly assumed a professional tone. “Let me check the dates.”

You twiddle your fingers together. “So, uh, while you look that stuff up, what’s this gym’s gimmick? Are there any pre-trainers?”

“We don’t believe in that kind of stuff here,” Courtney says. “You can battle the lackies if you want, but it is strictly optional. Likewise, you can go straight to the gym leader if that catches your drift. I think there’s a challenge room you have to pass if you want to do a team challenge, but we only have that in place because the Board requires it.”

“A team challenge?” Damn, you hate being so ignorant. Where’s Katie and Kori to explain things when you need them?

“Yeah, it’s that new thing they implemented. You can challenge the gym as a Rescue Team and each one of you gets the badge. I think, like, some people look down on that shit, but who gives a shit, right?” Wow, that became casual pretty quickly. At least it’s good to know you have options.

“Looks like we’re free in two months,” Courtney says. You tell her that’s agreeable and hand her your trainer ID. “Oh look. You’re one of them special trainers. Unfortunately I can’t show favoritism and bump you up. You understand right?”

“Yeah. I appreciate you not giving me special treatment.” In truth, some special treatment couldn’t hurt. You look at the entrance of the gym then at your poketch. They should be here now. “Hey, look, I’m gonna go search for my friends. Can I have the ID back?”

“Sure,” she says. You wait a bit, but she doesn’t hand it back. “Can I go with you?”

“You can come with, but I have a few stipulations,” you say.

“Sure, give it to me straight, boss,” she says. Was she trying to emulate a gangster? What?

“First of all, I want my ID back,” you say.

“Done,” Courtney say, handing it back to you. Good. That honestly shouldn’t even have been a stipulation but whatever. You have your precious ID back.

“Next, this is only a temporary thing. I have too many people wanting to join my team, and it’s flattering but annoying.” You wonder if the invites will increase as you gain more popularity, though you’re not really sure how you’ll do that. Maybe if you beat the gyms in quick succession? That’d be a pretty sweet way to gain fame.

“Don’t worry, I’m more of a lone wolf,” Courtney says, interrupting your thoughts.

“Then why are you joining me? Bored?”

“Nah. I just know this area better. People tend to get lost easily. I think it’s all the fey in the area. They can be nasty if you don’t know how to deal with them.” You shudder a little at that. Your mom used to tell you horror stories when you were young about these creepy human-like Pokemon that would take children from their homes to never be seen again.

“Well, I appreciate it,” you say.

Roll me 1d20+9 (+3 for Detective in Training, +6 for Courtney’s assistance) vs DC 17 (Base 10, +2 for Night, +5 for difficult terrain). Best o’ 3.

“So tell me,” Courtney says. “What path did they pick?”

“The river path,” you tell her. It couldn’t have been that tough, could it?

“Tch tch,” she says. “That’s actually a deceivingly difficult way to get here. You have to go through this small patch of forest that grows on a steep cliff. Rumors say that if you don’t offer something before entering, you’ll never be able to leave.” What the fuck? If it wasn’t for Anuket’s injury would all three of you been stuck there?

“I’ll keep that in mind,” you say. But before you both head out, you hear the crack of thunder overhead. “It looks like it’s going to rain.”

“That doesn’t matter,” Courtney says. “Let’s see if we can find your friends.” She hands you a flashlight, which reminds you that you never told your mom you lost yours. That’s just something you’ll have to add to the list of things to purchase someday.

When you head outside, you find that it’s dark – very dark. Moments ago, there was still some sunlight illuminating everything, and now you can barely see 15 feet in front of you. That’s pretty strange to say the least and you’re not sure you can trust the person travelling next to you.

You end up traveling downhill in very rocky terrain. You feel small stabs and pinpricks through the soles of your feet and you think you pick up a kind of rusty scent. Blood maybe? You try to quicken your pace but end up almost falling flat on your face. Luckily, Courtney caught your arm in time. “Do not haste, lest you anger the beings that watch you.” That’s… Not comforting in the least. You do make sure to slow down though.

The thing about living in Serenecity is that trees aren’t ever far from the eye. Green space is prolific between buildings, separating roads, and every so often planted on the walkways. This was different. The trees near you are densely packed, and you think you can sometimes perceive yellow eyes staring at you from between the small spaces between the trees. Shadows move here and there but you’re not sure if it’s your imagination. You certainly don’t want to ask your temporary partner any questions.

“Stop,” she orders you. “Make an offering to the spirits of the forest.” You see her cup a gold coin, before bowing down and offering it up to the trees. You suppose you should mimic her.

You…

You’re not sure how this whole thing works or whether Courtney is yanking your bike chain. At least, that’s how you think the saying goes. She offers no explanation, so you grab a potion from your bag and mimic her expression, bowing down while offering the item to the forest. You look down to the ground and see that all the roots are arranged in heart shapes. That’s pretty odd.

You feel Courtney stir nearby so you look at her. She’s standing up, so you do the same.

Your potion is gone. You look around but it’s nowhere nearby. Did – did something actually take it? Regardless, Courtney starts walking forward and she said she knows this place. You follow.

While her light is steady and is pointed forward, you turn yours to look around. The forest is too dense for you to make out much, but you do see a glint somewhere to your left. You stop and shine your light in that direction again. The same glint appears.

“Hey Courtney, I think I found something,” you say. She stops but doesn’t turn. Um. “I’m gonna check it out, okay?” She still doesn’t turn. You start getting goosebumps. You decide maybe you shouldn’t trust the girl you barely met, what, an hour ago? You head towards the glint and find a hat with some kind of shiny buckle on it. Wait a minute…. This is Katie’s!

You turn your flashlight to face Courtney but she’s gone. You don’t see the light from her flashlight. Instead all you see around you are trees. Near Katie’s hat, you see a hole.

You didn’t really notice it before, but there’s no noise. You don’t hear insects buzzing; you don’t hear birds chirping or Hoothoot’s hooting. In fact, you haven’t seen a single Pokemon since you entered this place. No Sentret or Spinarak or any grass types.

Oh no. You’re in a horror movie and you don’t have a black friend. Kori isn’t the funny one, so does that mean you die first? You take some small comfort knowing that Katie should at least survive until the end, with her platinum blonde hair and all.

You’re about to call out for help when you stop yourself. Is that wise? Are you just being extra paranoid? Nah that can’t be it. This can’t be a horror movie. That kind of stuff never happens in real life.

“Courtney! Hey where’d you go?” You call out. Your voice echoes back to you. It didn’t use to do that before. Fuck. You start moving your flashlight to face each direction. What if something sneaks up on you? Fuck. Fuck. Fuck.

You force yourself to stop. This kind of thinking isn’t productive. You clear your throat then call down the hole. “Hey Katie, Kori, you guys down there?” You hear your voice echo back to you, but that’s totally normal, right?

You hear a twig snap somewhere to your right. Your flashlight immediately points in that direction but you see nothing there. Instead you start to hear what sounds like whispers. You can’t tell individual words apart, but you have a sick feeling in your stomach. You’re pretty sure you aren’t alone.

What do you do?

>>312098
Thank. I'm a huge horror buff. Was the tone shift too sudden?
>>

call out Gojira and have him make a mini-sandstorm. It'll offer us protection and give away our position to the babealicious beauties.
I'm not an author or anything, but in my opinion the shift was beautifully executed. You introduced us into a nonthreatening environment with a history of unfortunate events, then quickly submerge us into the atmosphere, which creates a feeling of unease that I quite frankly didn't know was possible in a pokemon quest.

>>312132
>>312152
Fog starts to creep around the area, and you know that soon it’ll make it difficult to see. The whispers increase in intensity, but you don’t let that deter you.

You do the only sensible thing that comes to mind: a faint red light reveals Gojira and Vulcan. They quickly cower behind you, however. It looks like they can sense that things are off, and at least they trust you enough to think you can protect them. “Keep your eyes peeled,” you say. “If all three of us watch each other’s back, our chances of getting surprised lessen.” You say that more for your sake than theirs, but at least they take your words to heart and glance around. “Stay close to me,” you warn them, and you can feel your Pokemon instinctively move to touch as much of your legs as they can. Something about not being alone gives you courage.

At least the whispering stopped. You find that strange but it looks like you’re on the right path. Perhaps this place is some kind of puzzle you need to solve?

You point your flashlight down the hole, but you don’t really see the bottom. It looks like the hole curves down to the left, and you wonder whether it’s supposed to act like a slide. It looks like a trap some ground pokemon might have set up. You look around, and there’s a tree in the middle of this “clearing.” You can’t really call this a clearing though since the trees stand in a five foot radius circular opening. It could work as a good anchor to tie your rope around.

You get the urge to go down the hole, though you aren’t sure where it came from.

You…

Something strikes you as very wrong here, and it isn’t just the lack of noise and sudden darkness. This whole thing doesn’t make sense. You crouch down and your Pokemon hold tightly to your clothes. “I’m about to do something that might be dumb,” you say. “So brace yourselves.”

You turn off your flashlight, and you’re thrusted into the darkness. It’s silent, save for your breathing and the breathing of your pokemon. You can feel them, Gojira’s claws nearly sink into your skin, and Vulcan snuggles as close to you as he can, the metal on skin oddly warm to the touch. You start to smell petrichor and the familiar scents of the forest: dirt and something else, like a sickly sweet smell that reminds you of flowers. You hear the pitter patter of rain, and rustling of leaves, though you don’t feel any drops of water hit you.

Slowly, you see the area around you begin to glow. A closer inspection shows fungi glowing a dim green color. There’s enough to illuminate the clearing you’re in. In fact, the mushrooms form a circle around the clearing, much like a fairy circle. You see a bunch of glowing yellow eyes observing you from in between the trees. One moves forward and you can see that it’s a black spherical pokemon surrounded by a purple haze. More and more of them appear.

You’re surrounded.

Also, there was an anon a few days ago who said he couldn't play dnd because he lived in a small town. My recommendation would be to find an online group to play with. I find tabletop to be a very enjoyable activity, and I think everyone should have the chance to try it.
>>

Well I have played DnD, but that's the only thing that there's enough people to really play, and I don't like online tabletop. Also, I kinda figured Katie and Kori would know the gym type, so we shouldn't waste any time finding them. As for another quest theme, I never get tired of Star Wars, DnD, Fallout, etc.
If you're trying to be original, since there's a Fallout quest and 2 Star Wars quests, you could do shadowrun like you wanted, or maybe some sort of Varangian or Pictish type historical quest, maybe you could do another board-tan quest where we play as another board-tan, I dunno. There's lots of options.
Anywho, I'm excited for today's session!

As you observe the situation around you, you note both good and bad news. The good news is that your instincts worked. The sudden darkness, the disappearing ally, and the lack of sound were similar to the situation Detective Dresden found himself in. Though in his case, the situation arose from an interdimensional psychic witch looking to mess with his mind and sleep with him.

The bad news? You find yourself surrounded by gas balls. Their glowing yellow eyes turn into a dim white when they enter the circle, and you count at least six gently approaching with more still hiding behind the foliage. You take out your new deluxe pokedex and it reveals that these strange creatures are called Gastly and that they emit a deadly poisonous gas. And you find it worrisome that they’re headed your way.

Something whispers into your ear, “Go down the hole.” It sounded like a child’s voice, and you find that immensely creepy. There’s no time to think now. You need to make a choice:

A quick inspection shows that your pokemon are currently cowering at your feet. You get the impression that they’ll still follow your orders, but you think they’d rather get away.

You shrug internally. It’s now or never. And following the advice of an incorporeal child is better than the very real threat of dying from toxic asphyxiation. That, and you’re not entirely sure your ‘mons can take out the threat. As much as it pains you to admit, they aren’t strong enough yet.

“Down the hole!” You command. Both Gojira and Vulcan jump down without hesitation. You grab the rope from your bag, and try to tie a noose or knot as quickly as possible; each second of fumbling lets the Gastly approach, though you sense more curiosity emanating from them than malicious intent. Is this some kind of trick they’re using to lower your guard?

Silently you curse your younger self for not joining the Rufflet Scouts when the opportunity presented itself. You throw what you hope is a rope loop towards a tree branch, throw the rest of the rope into the hole, then jump down.

The hole is a bit of a tight squeeze, but the gravel and dirt underneath you is loose. The end result feels like going down a slide – a terrifying slide towards a dark, unknown path. You find the steep incline lessen until you’re finally spit out a hole in the wall. Thankfully, the hole is only about two feet above the ground, and your fall, though graceless, does not harm.

The same glowing fungus from above is littered about in what can only be described as underground cave. The ceiling is short, maybe about 7 feet tall with variations here and there. The dim light cast from the fungus washes everything in a light green hue. You note that the red shirt you’re wearing appears black, and you find your pokemon not far from where you fell.

You get up and you can faintly make out three paths: one goes forward, one goes right, and one goes left. Behind you, you make out the hole you came from, and see a piece of rope dangling from it. You tug at the rope and it seems to hold firm. Take that Rufflet Scouts!

From the right path, you think you hear water, and from the center path you hear a rhythmic thumping sound. You…

Three equally mysterious paths stand before you and with no indication that your friends were here or where they would go had they been here. You reach into your backpack and pull Katie’s hat out; it’s a standard sunhat with a pink bow, though the pink doesn’t really show through the green fungus light. You decide to swap it for your own and find that it’s pretty comfortable.

You look around and decide that you might as well pick a path and get exploring. As long as you get moving, you ought to find either an exit or an ally. Or an enemy. You banish that lost thought from your mind and decide to pick the center path. “Why go right or left, when you can go straight through the wall” is something the great Detective Brown once said. In this case, the wall is the middle path.

You have Gojira mark the entrance of the middle path and make a mark every 5 meters or so. You don’t want to encounter the same kind of fuckery you found in the forest. If this is still some kind of horror movie, you want to know if the paths rearrange themselves.

It doesn’t take you long to find what’s generating the noise. Maybe 100 feet in, you find a small, grey rabbit-like Pokemon within a small clearing. It has large, brown-tipped ears and its neck is surrounded by brown fur. You quickly take out your Pokedex, and it takes a few extra moments before revealing that the pokemon in front of you is called a Bunnelby. You see the strange creature rhythmically punching the dirt wall, a small tunnel surrounding it. Is this pokemon the cause of these tunnels?

It hasn’t noticed you. Further ahead, the path seems to continue, though you notice the ceiling shrinking down to around four feet tall. There’s no glowing fungus ahead, meaning that if you decide to keep going, you’re going to have to crawl through a dark, narrow tunnel. You…

Thump, thump, thump.

Honestly, you feel a little lost. That’s probably because you are lost, but don’t adventurers usually feel like they should know where they’re going? Are you doing this wrong? Back when you and your mom went to visit your grandparents, you remember her getting lost and asking people for directions. Maybe you could do the same?

You look down at your Pokemon. Vulcan stands two feet in front of you. He’s looking back at you to make sure it’s okay to keep going. Gojira stays by your leg, but he isn’t gripping it. The little green reptilian is actually looking around for a good place to scratch the wall without destabilizing the structure of the tunnel around you. Neither pokemon are growling or moving to stay as close to you as possible. You take that as a good sign.

You motion for Vulcan to stay where he’s standing, so he decides to face forward and sit down. You cautiously approach the bunny pokemon while Gojira leaves your side to examine on of the walls. The Bunnelby is still pounding at the dirt, but it’s making good progress. The tunnel it makes is already two feet into wall to your right.

Now… How do you ask a wild Pokemon for directions? You suppose you should start by getting its attention. You clear your throat, but that doesn’t work.

Thump, thump, thump.

“Um… Hi?”

Thump, thump, thump.

You try a little louder. “Hey bunny. I-I’m trying to talk to you.” The Bunnelby stops what it’s doing and turns to look at you. Its expression is a mix of curious and annoyed, and you don’t sense any violent intent.

Even under the green glow of the strange forest fungus, you find the Bunnelby kind of cute. The whiskers, head-to-body ratio, and big eyes remind you of the newborn Pokemon you used to take care of. Instincts take over as you fall back to your default way of dealing with new pokemon. You crouch, offer the Bunnelby your hand so it can get your scent, and in a non-threatening voice, you introduce yourself. “Hey there, my name’s Alex and I’m looking for my friends.”

The bunny cautiously approaches your hand and sniffs it. Finding you satisfactory enough, it turns back to continue to work on its tunnel. “Hey wait!” You say, and it stops. You notice some dark liquid on the tips of its ears. “I can heal those if you want.” You take out a potion and offer it to the wild Pokemon.

It grunts a sound of protest, points its tiny paw at its ears then the tunnel. You’re not sure what it said, but you think you just insulted it? You take another look at your Pokedex and it informs you that Bunnelby build up strength through building tunnels. You suppose that includes callouses that they’re probably proud of.

“I, uh, didn’t mean to offend,” you say as soothingly as possible. “I was just looking for humans. A bubbly blonde and a, um, cold? Yeah, a cold brunette.” The wild Bunnelby tilts its head. It probably doesn’t understand what you mean. Fuck.

You look through your pack. Why didn’t you take a picture of them? Wait, none of your devices can take pictures. Ugh! Why didn’t you buy one that can? You sigh and add that to the list of things to get eventually.

(1/2)
>>
You take out your Pokegear without thinking. Hey wait! Your Pokegear is connected to your trainer ID, which means that since Katie and Kori are in the same team as you, you should have their trainer ID pictures on their contact profiles in your phone. You remember hearing something about that? In a commercial maybe. “Devon corp: building convenience and trust since 2002.”

You quickly scroll through your five(?) contacts and see that each number has a picture next to it. Success! “This is them,” you show the wild pokemon. Katie’s picture has her in her white dress, smiling demurely at the camera. She’s holding her sunhat – the same one you’re currently wearing on your head. Kori’s picture, on the other hand, is strictly professional. Cold was probably an accurate if slightly insulting description of her.

The Bunnelby seems to recognize the pictures, since it starts hopping and making noise. Gojira and Vulcan notice and join your side. They talk with the wild pokemon then look at you. It’s obvious you can’t follow the conversation. They continue talking. The wild pokemon looks back at its makeshift tunnel before looking at you and your pokemon. You think there’s a shift in its expression because soon after iIt starts to walk back through the tunnel you came from. Your pokemon follow it, and you join them. They probably know what they’re doing.

The Bunnelby leads you to the entrance of the right path, where you hear water flowing. It gestures towards that path before walking away.

You…

You briefly consider exploring your other options but you trust your pokemon and they trust the Bunnelby. “Thank you!” You call out but you’re not sure if it heard you. You look down the right path. The glowing fungus is more numerous here.

You have a mission and that mission is finding your friends.

“Alright guys, let’s go,” you say. “We have a rescue to conduct.” Your Pokemon look a little livelier at your words, and the small chrome creature you caught a few days ago starts scouting further ahead than you feel comfortable. You warn Vulcan to be more careful, but he decides to scout further ahead instead of falling back. You start to move a little quicker but see Gojira falling behind. He’s still marking your path.

“Vulcan, stop,” you order. He does so just before the curved tunnel cuts him away from your vision. When you and Gojira catch up, you admonish Vulcan. “Hey buddy, let’s stick together. It’s more important to be careful when you’re out in the field.” You crouch down to his level. “We need to look out for each other because a situation can turn deadly like that.” You snap your finger to demonstrate, and you see Vulcan nod his head. It looks like he’s going to take your words to heart.

You continue your trek down the path, both your Pokemon only a few feet away from you at a time. The further in you go, the more humid it feels. Finally, the tunnel opens up and you find yourself in a giant cavern. The light from the fungus doesn’t reach the ceiling, but what you can see leaves you a little breathless. There appears to be an underground lake down here. The fungus seems to grow around the edge of the cavern, and the lights seem to make a giant circle. There’s a thin line of green light in the horizon, presumably on the other side of the lake. You think you see a glint on the left. To your right, you think you see a campsite? There’s also some strange ripples in the water.

You…
>Investigate the ripples.
>Check out the campsite.
>Search for that shiny thing.
>Do something else [write-in]

That glint immediately catches your attention and you feel drawn to it. Like a Murkrow after jewelry, you find yourself wanting whatever it is. Your pokemon follow you, and you’re vaguely aware of Gojira holding your pants leg.

It doesn’t take long to get to the source of the glint. You see a fishing rod left on some rocks with the line still cast in the water. It looks a little rusty, and your best guess is that it was abandoned down here. Finders keepers, losers are sleepers. At least that’s how you think the saying goes.

You see an orange weasel type pokemon with a yellow surrounding its neck and blue fins on its arms. It has two tails. Your pokedex calls it a Buizel, and it’s between you and that rod.

It doesn’t take long for the wild Pokemon to turn hostile.

You send out…
>Vulcan, he’s itching for action.
>Gojira, he’s your best fighter.

Vulcan steps up to fight, but you say, “Gojira, step forward.” The little Aron looks back at you questionably. “Don’t worry Vulcan, you’ll get your chance.” He steps back and allows Gojira to take his place.

The battlefield consists of some small rock outcroppings you think either your pokemon or your opponent can hide behind. There’s some sand that forms a small beach and it leads into the lake. If your opponent escapes there, you’re going to have a hard time fighting it. Currently, the place where the rod is at is on higher ground, giving your opponent a bit of an advantage.

The wild Buizel looks at both your pokemon cautiously then at you. There’s definitely some hostility there, but you’re not sure why. Could that rod be its treasure? Regardless, the battle is on.

You order Gojira to…
>Use an attack:
>>Bite, start offensively.
>>Leer, intimidate your opponent.
>>Sandstorm, make it harder to see.
>>Dragon Dance, ballerina style.
>>Dig, set up more tunnels even further underground.

“Sandstorm, go!” You order. You see the familiar twisting motion as Gojira gathers dirt and sand around him. It starts as a dust devil but quickly becomes a sandstorm. You feel the familiar whipping and stinging hit your face and arms, and you hold one arm out to try to shield your eyes. You add getting goggles to your list of things to get.

The sandstorm starts getting thicker – more powerful. The familiar stings become more violent and painful. Either Gojira is getting better at this or it’s the availability of sand. Whatever it is, Gojira is extra hidden.

You can tell wild Buizel starts saying something to your Pokemon, but you think whatever it said is lost in the haze of sand. As always, you’re not sure whether Gojira can hear you, but you direct him to dig a tunnel towards the rocks.

You think you will have an advantage in the next attack. You order Gojira to…
>Attack:
>>Bite, catch that Buizel off guard.
>>Leer, taunt your opponent from the shadows.
>>Sandstorm, make it even harder to see.

You’re honestly not a fan of Gojira’s super strong sandstorm, and you’re guessing neither is the enemy pokemon. This is your chance to lead the wild Buizel away from that rod.

“Gojira, use dragon dance, but taunt your opponent. Make it attack you!” You can’t really see too well and each time you try, sand viciously attacks your eyes. For now, you choose to rely on your sense of hearing. The howling sound coming from the sandstorm doesn’t mask the sound of crashing rocks. You can only hope that Gojira was successful at taunting your opponent.

You order Gojira to…
>Attack:
>>Bite, catch that Buizel off guard.
>>Leer, taunt your opponent from the shadows.

“Gojira, bite your opponent,” You order. You ask Vulcan to guide you to the rod. “Oh, and try to keep dodging behind the rocks!” You add. You can hear a few skirmishes happening somewhere to your left. With the howling wind, it sounds further than it really is, and while you’re tempted to open your eyes and check, you leave them shut. Opening them is too painful.

You hear a yelp from the battle, and it doesn’t sound like Gojira’s. It actually sounds like he did a good number to your opponent. You cheer internally but progress towards the rod is slow going. The rocks underneath you are uneven, and the sandstorm is doing you no favors. You end up tripping on Vulcan and cutting your hand. The wound stings, but you’ll get over it.

It’s probably best to wait until the sandstorm dissipates before you get that rod. You take out your Pokedex and the few glimpses you dare to take tell you that Gojira is a little hurt but at green health and the opponent is at yellow helath. You’re not sure what that means, but it’s probably a good sign.

As much as you’d love to throw a pokeball, you think the sandstorm would hurt your aim. You definitely need googles. The occasional glances you take at the pokedex still hurt your eyes something fierce. You also feel sand in your shirt and pants and… Elsewhere. Goddamn it.

“Gojira, one last bite,” you call out. “Try to hold your opponent down if possible.” There’s a few more skirmishes and you hear a few more rocks break. Gojira yelps out in pain, and you can see that his health went down to red! That definitely cannot be a good thing. He – he didn’t get hit by a water type move, did he?

You hear another yelp, this time by the Buizel. Your pokedex tells you both pokemon are down to red health. Damn, you wish you could see what’s happening. Vulcan tries to tell you something but you’re not really sure what. You’re too focused on the battle. Any move could end up fainting either of your pokemon.

This isn’t good. You’re not sure when the last time you were this close to losing! Or so blind. “Gojira, get back here!” You call. You crouch down and use your good hand to look into your backpack, while you hold the pokedex in your mouth. It takes a few precious seconds but you manage to find a potion.

Meanwhile, Vulcan has been trying to squish closer to you. You can barely make out the low growl over the sandstorm, but Gojira soaks up your attention by popping out of the ground. You take a few glimpses and see cracks on his hard skin oozing blood. You quickly apply the potion, spraying it on the spots that look the worst. You don’t see any improvement but when you take the pokedex out of your mouth, you see he’s back to yellow health.

Vulcan barks, and you hear a different kind of howling sound before you feel it. One second you’re on the ground, treating your pokemon and the next thing you know, everything is spinning. The ground left your feet, and the sandstorm rushes around you. You feel your stomach do several flips and mostly you’re just surprised. What hit you?

The next thing you know, you feel something impact you hard and pain starts radiating throughout your body. Your vision momentarily turns a bright white before fading to black. You groan involuntarily. You try to get up, to open your eyes, but your body refuses to respond. It isn’t until you hear your pokemon calling out for your help that you’re able to put your good arm in front of you and lift your head. Every movement sends a stab of pain through you, but you manage to look up.

You see both your Pokemon standing in front of you. Gojira still looks pretty injured and you can tell Vulcan has taken a few hits. The buizel stands on top of the rocks, and you see several cuts and bite marks around its body. You note that some of the fur on its body is matted with blood. Your pokemon aren’t focused on it though. Instead, their attention is on a blue serpentine Pokemon with a white underbelly. It has white, three-pronged fins on its head and a white bump on its forehead. That must’ve been the pokemon that hit you. It stands a few meters away with no cover.

To your left, you see your Pokedex. It must’ve left your grip. To your right, you see your bag with some spilled contents. It must be your lucky day though. An empty pokeball is right next to you, though you’re not sure if you can even throw it with your condition.

>Attack [which one?].

Thinking back, this is probably the deadliest situation you’ve ever found yourself in. Worse than that time you and Heph stumbled onto an angry Combee nest. You wanted to go on an adventure even though you were, what, six? Seven? It doesn’t matter. It took you five minutes to get into trouble and it was Hephaestion who led you to a nearby river to hide in. Or that time you fell off a 3rd story building. It was honestly an accident. You went to the roof to observe the Driftloon and one tried to take you away. You fought as hard as you could, and when it finally let you go, you fell. It’s strange what memories start popping up when you face death. Back then, all you remember thinking is that you regretted stealing from the cookie jar. Wouldn’t your mom be upset that you died? She wouldn’t even have cookies to comfort her…

Your gaze wonders to Gojira and Vulcan. You’ve no doubt that if it wasn’t for the two Pokemon in front of you, you’d be dead by now. Gojira is panting hard and you can tell that Vulcan has a few extra scratches. Your best guess is that they’ve been using their bodies to protect you. You’re vaguely aware of a feeling of wetness and you really hope that it’s just water. The serpentine Pokemon coils up, an attack imminent. The adrenalin pumping through your veins makes everything look clearer, and for a moment of complete clarity, you come up with a plan.

“Gojira,” you call out, your voice gruff and a little weak. Your pokemon’s body perks up, obviously happy to hear from you. “Use sandstorm to cover your tracks then tunnel underneath that pokemon.” Your pokemon happily does so, and you feel the familiar whipping of sand and dirt hitting you before you see the green and red reptile dig a hole underground. It digs a little slower than usual and you find yourself hoping there’s no permanent damage. You have to succeed, for their sake just as much as yours. Who else will look after the little guys?

“Vulcan, follow him then use Dragon Rush. We’re going to surprise the opponent.” Vulcan looks back at you; he’s clearly worried for your safety. You lock eyes, and the message is clear. Together, you’ll get through this. You nod your head, only vaguely aware that there’s some pain there. Vulcan jumps down the hole and you think you see some determination there. It’s succeed or die, and you’re going to place your trust in your partners.

You instinctually roll to the right; your heart is pumping really fast and you can feel a dull throbbing in your head. The spot that you were just at is blasted by some kind of blue cyclone, and you feel a strong wind rustle your hair. Without thinking, you place your hand on your head. Katie’s hat is gone. Katie! And Kori. You have to fight for their sakes too. In this position, you have access to your bag, to tools that you can use to aid your partners. Though you sort of wish you had your pokedex with you. Information is half the battle after all.

(1/2)
>>
You see the Buizel move to cover the serpentine Pokemon’s flank. It must’ve seen the hole from its vantage point on the rocks. It moves to the head of the serpentine’s pokemon’s body, and you mentally curse at yourself. Of course they’re friends. Or at the very least allies. You were too focused on the battle, when you have to always be aware of your surroundings. It’s too easy to get distracted. Though that does give you another idea.

As if with practiced precision, Gojira pops up to the serpentine’s left. The Buizel calls out and you see the serpentine ready another attack. You see purple fire start to well up in the serpentine pokemon’s mouth, but they made a mistake. Vulcan pops up from the ground behind them, a strong purple aura surrounds him. He slams into the serpent and that causes both of your enemies to be thrown towards the rocks. Gojira ducks just in time to avoid the enemies’ bodies hitting him, and you think you hear a crunch as the serpent’s body collides with the rocks. You don’t see the orange weasel until the serpent uncoils, and then you can tell that the serpent used its body to protect the Buizel. That’s a weakness you can exploit.

(2/2)

You’ll…

Alright. Another round of 2d100+10. Almost there guys. I predict one more move needed before this fight is over.

I envy novel writers. They have the ability to edit. What you're reading is a very light edited first draft.
>>
Rolled 49, 51 + 10 = 110 (2d100 + 10)

>>
Rolled 92, 16 + 10 = 118 (2d100 + 10)

It's cool m8, you're doing a great job. You might be the best qm I've seen.

Rolled 62, 80 + 10 = 152 (2d100 + 10)

You can sort of sense fear emanating from the wild Pokemon. In one moment they were on top – the winners. The predators. And now they struggle against opponents who tricked them! Who seemed like fodder – easy food. Prey. There’s a chilly calmness to what you’re about to do. It’s something you have to do.

“Vulcan, mud slap! Hit the serpent right in the eyes!” Your voice is still gruff, but there’s an authority there. A sense of finality. You feel as one with your pokemon. Your mind and their bodies are merely extensions of the same being, and they follow your will easily. The serpent and weasel react to your voice, expecting some kind of attack from the previous direction. Instead, the attack comes from underneath. A tunnel collapses underneath them.

Your Aron jumps up from a nearby hole and with one kick, it blinds both your opponents. You capitalize on your opponent’s surprise. “Gojira, finish the Buizel!” Again your voice signals the outcome. The serpent tries with futility to strike out. A dark purple ooze shoots out from its mouth but misses the green reptilian that jumps out of the ground. With one earth-covered fist, Gojira smacks the orange weasel and it goes flying.

Buizel hits the wall next to you, then slumps down to the floor. It doesn’t get up.

This is it. You grunt with effort and you have to use the wall behind you for support, but you can stand up. There’s a pokeball in your hand, but you’re not sure if this serpent deserves to join you. You could easily finish it off.

Alright. Let's have 1d100+10. DC is 65. Top roll has to beat the DC. Second top roll has to beat a DC of 35. And the last roll has to beat a 5.

Simple enough.

Looks like the catch failed. You have two options now:
>Finish the serpent.
>Let it go.
>>
>>319375
>>Finish the serpent.
but I think it was close enough to merit a second try.

>>319375
>Let it go.

>Let it go.
I like your idea of the 3 shakes catch system
>>
>>319383
This means killing it you realize?
>>
>>319383
I just need one more vote and you'll see why that isn't an option.
>>
>>319390
Who cares? It tried to kill us.
>>
>>319375
>>Finish the serpent.
>>
>>319391
Nevermind. Looks like you guys are letting it go.

>>319389
Thanks. I wanted every roll to count. To increase suspense. I'm not sure how to do that with battling yet, but I'll try to come up with something.

You feel some innocent part of you scream for mercy, and another screams for blood. You decide on a compromise. You’ll enslave it. Make it fear you; have it warn others of your might. “Hey foul beast,” you yell out, a maniacal tinge to your voice. “Your only options are to join me or die. Gojira, Vulcan, hold it down.” Your pokemon move in to follow your orders. Good. This serpent will learn in time.

You casually throw the ball in your hands. It hits the beast on the head, and you can see the fear in its eyes. Will you do to it what you did to its friend? Perhaps. Or perhaps you’ll do worse. A flash of dim red light signals the serpent’s disappearance. The ball shakes…

Once.

Twice.

And then it breaks in half. The serpent flies out in a red flash and quickly flees into the water. You see it look back at its friend with tears in its eyes. Pathetic.

You consider giving chase but your servants have yet to learn ranged moves. That’s fine. They’ll learn. You kick a rock and it manages to hit the serpent just before it gets too far into the water. You’re not sure where this newfound aggression came from, but it’s intoxicating. You laugh. It hurts. But you keep on laughing. It’s over. You’re foes are defeated, and now you get to decide their fates. Your feet move you and you find yourself standing over the orange weasel that dared stand before you and your prize. This is the fate of all that oppose you: they will find themselves bleeding and defeated.

You put your foot on its head. All it would take is a little pressure. Just a tiny bit of power to end its pathetic life. You hear your pokemon gasp, but they don’t move to stop you. You’re the master.

And you’re going to enjoy killing.

[Alright guys. Thanks for playing! We’ll continue this tomorrow. Should I start a new thread or continue in this one?]

>>319395
Sorry guy. Just kind of wanted to finish the thead. So I chose the first option that got two votes. Hope to see ya tomorrow though.
>>
>>319425
not gonna lie, I really didn't like that shift in tone and it was too edgy to my taste. That really isn't the mindset I perceive Alex to have in a situation like that.
>>
>>319425
>>319447

Yeah. I felt that it was more than a little heavy-handed. And the edge it gave off was a bit toxic. I like to see Alex more as a Neutral than an Evil. Still, good thread though.
>>
>>319447
>>319457
Sorry lads. It looks like the mind alerting device from before wasn't as temporary as people thought.
>>
>>319457
>>319459
On the scale of abusive trainers, what would that mindset be the equivalent of? Silver? Gary Oak? Paul?
>>
>>319459

I kinda want Alex to get that checked at some point. If we've got a bit of psychic potential, we could develop countermeasures on our own, but I doubt we do.

>>319461

I'm not knowledgeable enough about pokemon trainers to give that evaluation(and if I were, I'd probably be wrong anyway, given the nature of alignment charts). I'm sure someone else could help you with that though.
>>
>>319461
I'd say that's probably Silver-tier. Blue is based man, he wouldn't do something like this in a million years.
>>
>>319461
Gary honestly wasn't that bad of a trainer, and Paul was based off Silver. I don't think Berserk!Alex is as bad as Silver/Paul or your typical evil grunt, since even when he's in this state, he doesn't view his Pokémon as mere tools, just brings subservient to his will.

As for the tone change, I was hoping to make it a noticeable plot device, but you anons are right. It was a little heavy handed. I'll tone it down in the future.

I'm still fairly new at this whole QM thing and I think that even 5 threads in, I'm still figuring out my authorial voice. Truth be told, I'm still experimenting so I'm trying out different things here and there. I appreciate the feedback, as it let's me know what works and what doesn't.

Anyways it's late and this isn't a blog, so QK out. (Until tomorrow. Night lads.)
