You are Prince Meirion auk Gwyrren, the only sane man in a royal family with dubious concepts of strategy, justice, taxation, and governance in general. You have made it your goal in life to keep your family on the throne and your head firmly attached to your body.

===============

You woke up before the crack of dawn to get ready for your little expedition. Archduchess Aleksandra of Rosea as arriving in full battle regalia, and letting her enter Aurwain like that would be a slight to Gwyrddarfordir, to say the least.

The soldiers weren't exactly happy about working so early - most of them are still smashed from whatever it is they did last night - but money is very good at waking people up and you're not expecting a fight anyway. You just need bodies in armour to help with your posturing.

"That should be enough to make an impression," Olwen says. She yawns and attaches her sword to her belt. "Although I suppose we can get a few more people if you want to take the Archduchess and run away with her."

"No, that's my plan for Princess Reagan," Myrddin says. "We'd need to settle that before Olstren causes a fuss."

"As always, Myrddin, your precautions are impressive and will be greatly appreciated if I ever have need of them," you say. "They're also completely irrelevant to the current situation. Now, what do you spies say?"

"The Archduchess' party will be in sight of Aurwain before noon," Myrddin says. "That gives us plenty of time to catch up to them."

"Of course, we need to decide whether or not to tell the Archduchess who you are," Olwen says. "She'll probably be grateful if she knows you helped her."

"We can't admit to anything we did though," Myrddin says. "At best, we can just bring some of our masks somewhere and hope she notices them."

>[Intrigue/1d12] "We'll give the Archduchess a hint and hope she recognizes us. It would make things smoother for everyone."

It doesn't seem wise to calm her down about our country's involvement in her war by bringing up our involvement in her war

our involvement in the war was in her favor and ended up defeating our uncles involvement. It shows that the royal family isn't lined up against her but are acting as individuals.

"No, I don't want to bring that up again," you say. "It's not entirely advantageous to our position, and I still don't know how my uncle dealt with things on his heads."

"It'll be more difficult," Myrddin says, "but I'm certain you're up for it."

"The guards are ready," Olwen says. "We're just waiting for your orders, your highness."

"Then let's get going," you say. "People will talk if they see us leaving the city, and I don't want to get caught in a commotion."

Even at this early an hour, the streets aren't empty. Merchants need to set up their stalls, and the fishermen are leaving for their morning hauls. Fortunately, they're also too busy to recognize you.

The city guards do recognize you, but you quickly convince them to open the gate and let you out. Outside the city, you travel at a more leisurely pace and encounter far fewer travelers. You turn towards the road the Archduchess will be using, which, fortunately, is one of the smaller ones. You won't get an audience for your confrontation at least.

You stop at a clearing a fair distance away from the city. This is as good a spot as any to wait for the Archduchess.

"How do you want to do this?" Olwen asks. "Formal, or intimidating?"

"I'll arrange the guards," Olwen says.

"Let them know they don't have to be too stiff," you say. "We might be here for a while. Myrddin, you have spies ahead, right?"

"Of course, your highness," Myrddin says. "They'll send word as soon as the Archduchess is close.

The guards stand at attention on either side of the road, while you, Olwen and Myrddin sit on your horses in the middle of the road. Altogether, it's about the same as the official welcome the Archduchess would get at the palace, only you're ambushing her in the middle of no where. It's regrettable, but if the Archduchess wants to be difficult, you don't mind playing along.

The guards stiffen when one of Myrddin's spies return to inform you of the Archduchess, while you relax. It never helps to be too tense during negotiations.

The Archduchess leads her procession, dressed in full armour, just as you'd been told. She pauses when she sees your party, unsure of what to do. However, you're flying the banner of House Gwyrren, and it's not like she can just turn back. She rides ahead with only two of her guards, but she stops when she's just barely close enough to talk.

"I wasn't expecting such a welcoming committee," the Archduchess says. "Especially not from the Victorious Prince."

"I'm honoured that you would recognize me, Archduchess," you say. "I wasn't aware we'd met before."

"I was there when you signed the most recent Ailgiat treaty," the Archduchess says.

Gwyrddarfordir has two ports where the North River meets the World Sea: Unfedgiat, which is on the Svekkan side of the river, and Ailgiat, which is on the Rosean side. They're a frequent source of conflict, since they effectively allow Gwyrddarfordir to control the near totality of Svekka and Rosea's maritime trade.

"An unfortunate affair for all involved," you say, "although I hope we were both more satisfied with the final agreements than we were with the war."

"If not, that war would not have ended," Aleksandra says. "Tell me, to what do I owe the pleasure of your company."

>[Sovereign/1d12] "Someone of your stature is certainly deserving of a formal welcome."
>[Military/1d12] "You know I can't let you enter Aurwain if you're armed."

"Since you seem so concerned about bandits -" You nod pointedly at the armour she's wearing. "I thought it best to escort you. You know how it is. We try to keep them out of the way, but there's always some group of thugs or jobless mercenaries looking come out of nowhere and harass honest travelers. It's only natural for such groups of armed riders to make people nervous."

The Archduchess' eyes narrow behind her helmet. The message has been sent, and she still has the chance to save face, if she wants to take it.

Aleksandra removes her helmet and shakes her hair loose. "In that case, thank you for your help, Prince Meirion," she says. "I imagine you've been quite busy these last few days."

"I always have time for honoured guests," you say. "Come, I'll bring you the rest of the way to Aurwain."

The other Roseans take their helmets off as well and fall into line, flanked by your troops. It's not perfect, but it's good enough for everyone involved. Seeing someone's face rather than expressionless steel does make them much more personable.

The Archduchess rides alongside you, and you're quite certain that she's keeping her pace slightly ahead of yours just to make a point. She's not saying anything either. She doesn't show it overtly, but she must be really angry about House Soryn fighting against her. Perhaps it would have been better to kill him, but he was useful at the time, and you can always kill him later if he ever gets in your way again anyway.

For now, however, you need to find a way to get on the Archduchess' good side.

"You know, despite all the dangers on the road, I am quite glad you decided to make the trip to Gwyrddarfordir," you say. "There aren't many opportunities for our kingdoms to talk."

"Fighting is much easier, even when you're getting involved in someone else's battles," Aleksandra says. "Still, it would have been impolite to snub an occasion such as this. My older brother received the invitation, but regretfully, he had more pressing matters to attend to, so I chose to come in his plans."

It's actually quite impressive how she makes it look like Rosea wanted to send a representative, while simultaneously implying that it wasn't worth sending anyone important.

And damn if Myrddin isn't equally impressive for figure all that out and setting things up so Aleksandra would come instead of passing the invitation along to someone else.

"Besides, I had some business in Gwyrddarfordir," Aleksandra says. "This was as good an excuse as any to come take care of it."

Depending on what kind of business Aleksandra is referring to, that might be very bad for you.

"What business might that be?"

"I'm looking for a consort," Aleksandra says.

Oh damn it.

"I met a Gwyrden mercenary a while ago," she continues. "I was hoping to make him an offer, but he left before I had an opportunity to get personal. He wasn't very good at scouting missions -" Those are tricky to begin with, so that wasn't entirely your fault. "- but he was reliable during battle."

You can't see Myrddin and Olwen, but you know exactly how much they're smirking right now.

"Gwyrddarfordir's a large country," you say. "You might have difficulty finding him."

Aleksandra snorts. "It's a thousand miles long and less than two hundred miles deep. It might as well be a noodle. Besides, I have reason to believe the person I'm looking for is in the nobility. It's not like the average Gwyrden mercenary can speak Rosean."

That was a rather large flaw in your disguise, but translators would have made everything more complicated, especially during strategy meeting.

Besides, Aleksandra isn't anywhere near as good a liar as you are. Oh, she's telling the truth about looking for a consort, but she's too frank about it, like she's trying to hide something else. It's likely she's also here to poke around your uncle's business.

"In that case, I'm certain you'll have a chance to meet," you say. "If you want help, you can always ask around the temples. They do some business with mercenaries."

"Ah, yes, I'd forgotten about your temples," Aleksandra says. "They sound like interesting places. I'll make sure to visit them."

"They're not as impressive as Rosean churches, but seeing as how they double as cemeteries and mausoleums, a sombre look is more appropriate."

"Really?" Aleksandra asks. "I heard they were just old and hadn't been renovated."

"That, too."

You manage to avoid bandits and stray mercenaries during the ride back to Aurwain. You lead the Archduchess into the city and guards do their best to clear the streets so you're not obstructed on your way to the palace. People still go out of their way to gawk at you and the soldiers.

You part ways in front of the palace so you can have a few minutes to get ready. "Welcome to Aurwain, Archduchess," you say as you leave Aleksandra for a moment. "I was happy to escort you. The heralds will be here to greet your formally in a moment."

"Thank you, Prince Meirion," the Archduchess says. "Hopefully, I won't require your assistance like this again."

"That depends on how you travel, I suppose."

You leave Aleksandra with a light barb and rush into the palace to get ready for the Archduchess' formal arrival. There's another audience in the throne room, and you sit in your usual spot, but fortunately, there's not private dinner scheduled tonight.

Instead, there will be a formal banquet.

"Hahaha!" King Gerad slaps his knees and laughs as he usually does. Your mother's eye twitches slightly. "Now that our guests from Rosea have arrived, my son's wedding ceremony can truly begin at last! Since we committed ourselves to the expenses and the pomp, we must see to it that all our guests enjoy themselves!"

"Thank you, your majesty," Aleksandra says politely. "As a representative of Rosea, I shall endeavour to appreciate the culture of Gwyrddarfordir."

With the King's announcement, things can finally get truly under way. You return so you can take another shower - you worked up quite a sweat with all this running around - and call Myrddin and Olwen for a meeting.

"Are we ready for the wedding?"

"There aren't any problems on my end," Olwen says. "Security is tight and the guards are ready."

"That might not be enough," Myrddin says. "I just received word that the assassins we'd been waiting for have come to the city and are looking for new accommodations now that their old ones have been taken down."

"Will they strike tonight?"

"Early in the morning tomorrow, perhaps," Myrddin says, "but not during the celebrations. I wouldn't be surprised if they tried to scout the palace somehow, and I would be very surprised if this wasn't related to the Archduchess' arrival."

"Now then." Myrddin rubs his hands gleefully. "Let's move on to the important business?"

"Ordering a bunch of people executed isn't important business?" Olwen asks.

"No, that's just usual for us by now," Myrddin says. "Then again, so is this. You'll need date for this evening, your highness. Preferably someone from the nobility."

"And someone other than me, I imagine," Olwen says.

"Correct," Myrddin continues. "You'll need to entertain the princesses as well, but since the opportunity presents itself, you should bring someone else along. You could ask Laila as well."

"Wouldn't that send the wrong message to Reagan and Aleksandra?" You ask. "I'd rather not favour Svekka at the moment."

"Princess Agda would see it favourably, but given Laila's status, the others shouldn't mind much," Myrddin says. "Just let me know who you'd like to invite."

"Can you send Lady Rhonwen an invitation?"

"Of course, your highness," Myrddin says. "I'm sure she'll be delighted to accept."

"So long as you don't let her wear you out," Olwen says. "I don't want to feel lonely tonight."

"You know I always take the time to make you feel appreciated, Olwen," you say.

"Damn right, I do."

With your preparations complete, you wait for the sun to fall and for the banquet to get started. One of the main halls was cleared out to make a some room for a dance floor; Prince Haul will be expected to formally introduce his new bride. You rather hope he won't make a mess of it. His dancing skills aren't that great, but he's more than handsome enough to make up for it, even when he's not even trying.

You meet Rhonwen by the palace's entrance and help her step down from her carriage.

"Welcome back, Lady Rhonwen," you say. "I'm glad you accepted my invitation."

Rhonwen looks at you with heavy-lidded eyes and smiles. "I was quite glad to receive it, your highness. I'm afraid I'm not used to this parties, however."

>"To be honest, they never get any less awkward."
>"You'll get used to it eventually."
>"I promise you won't be bored."

"I promise you won't be bored," you say.

"Oh, I'm sure I'll be fine," Rhonwen says. "So long as the other nobles don't talk to me. They never have anything interesting to say. It's always about wealth and status."

"House Cysgod isn't as notable as some of the older families," you say, "but I wouldn't call you poor."

"The difference, your majesty, is that our wealth and status is based on current and ongoing accomplishments," Rhonwen says. "Even then, there are some members of our family who don't understand that. Someone with your accomplishments should know that it's not enough to cling to old glories. We need to be new ones as well."

"I can't argue with that," you say. "But enough about the drudgery. The banquet is starting, and I don't want to be late."

You offer Rhowen you arm and escort her in. Inside the palace, the food has been set out on heated plates, but most of the guests are gathered around the dance floor, where Prince Haul stands beside his blushing bride.

"Welcome, honoured guests." Although Prince Haul's tone is genial enough, you can tell it's not natural. "Mair and I are glad that so many people have come to share the join of our marriage. This union shall forge a bright future for ourselves and for the kingdom of Gwyrddarfordir. Let the celebrations commence!"

Haul takes Mair's hand and they begin to dance around the floor. It's… proficient, especially on Mair's side. You assume you have your mother to congratulate for that. Still, it's painfully obvious to anyone that Haul isn't suited for this. He can't quite follow the tempo, and his movements tend to be too sudden, as if he were in the middle of a fight. At least he looks dashing.

More dancers begin to trickle in, starting with your parents. Your father isn't much better than your brother, but fortunately, your mother more than makes up for it.

You look at your brother. Then your father. Then your brother again. Then all the assembled guests.

This probably isn't the greatest social disgrace the royal family has suffered, but it's up there.

"Should we join them?" You ask Rhonwen.

"I'm afraid I'm not very good at dancing either," she says. "But since you offered…"

Rhonwen takes your hand and allows you to lead her to the dance floor. As she said, she isn't as good a dancer as Eleri, but she's obviously practiced a little, and the song isn't too difficult.

Besides, the way she presses her chest against you, while technically bad form, is quite pleasant in its own way.

You dance in a circle around the floor once, then twice. You don't go out of your way to eclipse your brother or your parents, but people do take notice of you so you can save face, which is what you cared about the most in this case anyway.

The song ends and you step out of the way before the next one begins.

"I suppose that was enjoyable," Rhonwen says. "I must say, you're better at this than I expected."

"My mother insisted I learned," you say, "and one of my acquaintances is a dancer, so I had a reason to keep my skills sharp."

The two of you take a seat at an empty table. Dinner in this case is a hot pot chicken broth with a selection of meats and vegetables. It's traditional fare in Gwyrddarfordir, although the ingredients usually aren't as carefully spiced and marinated as they are here.

Looking around the room, you see Agda and Laila are talking to various nobles, Reagan is speaking with a small group of women and very deliberately snubbing every man who goes anywhere near her, and Aleksandra is talking to a group of older gentlemen whom you recognize from tales of failed battles against Rosea; they look like they would much rather be anywhere other than speaking with the Archduchess at the moment. Rhonwen is, of course, sharing a meal with you.

No matter what happens, you just know this is going to be a long night.

And that is all for today's thread. The next one will be Friday July 1st at around 7PM EDT same as always. Tonight was a pretty active run, so I don't have much else to say.

It has been interesting to see her behavior towards Meirion compared to Gwain. Besides not being sure who in Gwyrddarfordir is supporting her and who's against her, I suspect she's trying to drum up some support back home by getting in some shots against a foreign country. It's good to get to know her flaws as well as her virtues, would be good to get a look at Reagan's and Agda's bad sides as well.

Also
>Meirion is going to have to prevent assassinations, political incidents, and feuds between princesses while keeping his date happy and not staring at her chest

Good thing we practiced chess and dueling at the same time!
