You sit up in surprise. Sunlight streams into your room and a quick inspection reveals that Katie is no longer here. Your alarm clock continues to beep, so you get up to turn it off. The damn thing is such a pain but you guess it just saved you from a very confusing dream. What the fuck was that about? Is this what you get for not addressing the media? You shake your head; you can think about it later.

There’s a note from Katie near the alarm clock. It reads:

Sorry Alex but you looked so cozy. I think you were having some kind of nice dream? ;) Kori and I went ahead to the Pokemon Center you know the one and I guess well meet there?

You think you remember Katie getting up several times during the night to feed the baby Growlithe you hatched together. She makes a pretty good mother; you just hope you can do that same as a father.

You take a quick shower and quickly change. You take a moment to choose from the Classic hat option or the newsboy cap Katie gave you. You decide the newboy cap is a welcome change to your wardrobe and add caps to the list of things you want to buy. You put on your shoes, make sure you look decent in the mirror, and try to tuck your belly to no avail. Eh, you’ll work it off eventually.

Downstairs, you find your mom watching television in the living room. Robin is with her. “Morning, sweetie,” she says. “I hope you don’t mind, but Robin has been helping me around the house. You have to watch her closely; she can be mischievous. I caught her taking food from the pantry.” Your mom chuckles so you don’t feel the need to punish your Pokemon. No harm, no foul. Still, you’re surprised that Robin was able to leave her pokeball by herself. Can all pokemon do that?

Your stomach growls so your mom volunteers to make you breakfast. You sit on the counter stools and watch her work. Robin assists your mom with cooking duty and you could swear that she’s some kind of natural. Robin throws the egg shells away after your mom is done cracking them. Robin hands your mom the pepper and salt as she stirs the eggs in a bowl. It’s like they’ve known each other for a while. “I think her previous trainer used to cook with her,” your mom says, as if reading your thoughts. “She’s also pretty good at cleaning.”

You think back. Robin never really fought you until you started attacking her. You haven’t really used her in a battle, and she lagged behind during your brief training session. Looking back, maybe Robin didn’t really enjoy it? Not as much as Gojira or Vulcan did. She looks carefree and relaxed here. Maybe – just maybe – you should give Robin to your mom. She does look happy here and you haven’t bonded with her as much as the other two yet. The transition wouldn’t be too tough.

Your mom hands you a platter of eggs and sausages. “Hey mom,” you say. “What do you think about maybe keeping Robin as an assistant? She seems to have taken a liking to you.”

Your mom looks down at the Munchlax quietly enjoying her own plate of eggs and sausages. She looks up at you two curiously then continues to happily munch on her food. “Now that mention it, I guess I wouldn’t mind, but aren’t you being presumptions about what Robin wants?”

Your mom is right. Didn’t you name Robin while she was asleep? It’s not like she showed signs of disliking her name but you have been making decisions for her. Didn’t you read somewhere that the relationship between trainer and pokemon is one of partnership instead of master and slave? You shouldn’t be too hasty when deciding something about your pals. Or you should ask them about any decisions you want to make.

You release Gojira and Vulcan from their pokeballs. Vulcan stretches eagerly while Gojira takes his place by your side. You pet both of them and quickly finish up breakfast. When you’re done, you put two bowls of Pokemon food down and your Aron gladly moves in to start eating. Gojira looks up at you and only begins eating when you give him permission. He slowly approaches the food and sniffs it. Only when he finds it satisfactory, does he begin to eat it.

You crouch down so that you’re near eye level with Robin. “Hey,” you say to get her attention. She turns to face you, but she still eats her food albeit slower. “I’ve noticed that you like to help around the house. I was just wondering if you liked battling to?” Robin looks at you for a few moments before shrugging her shoulders. She goes back to eating. “Well, uh, would you prefer to stay here instead of coming with me on a journey?” Again, Robin shrugs. Maybe she’s just very laidback?

It honestly looks like this could go either way. If you’re being honest with yourself, you would love for your mom to have some help around the house when you leave. Alright, you’re not really sure they’d say those things but Scarlet has a good point. “Mom,” you say, grabbing her attention away from the dishes. “When you were on your journey, what did you do when you caught more than 6 pokemon?”

“Well as a specialist in Pokemon breeding, I was the designated hatcher, and we somehow found a lot of eggs on our journey.” Yeah, you’re familiar with all the stories she used to tell, like the time she visited the Eevee ranch or when she found a Gible egg near the Elite Four palace. “So I would swap Pokemon often. I think I remember telling you this?” That’s right. She did.

“Yeah, you would send all the extra ‘mons to Popop and Nana’s ranch.” You have a few vague memories of that old couple, but you haven’t seen them in years. Like, maybe 4 years?

“Exactly. They’ve since retired but I think some of my old partners still happily live there.” Your mom looks like she’s staring far away to another place in another time. Uh-oh. She usually gets sad after extensive dives into past memories.

You think up a quick distraction. “Hey mom, could you help me the way popop and nana helped you?” Now that you think about it, that’s a great idea!

Your mom looks down at Robin, who decided to nap right next to her plate. “I don’t know…” She says.

“Pleeeease?” You say, mimicking the way you used to ask your mom for toys. Come to think of it, you haven’t really asked her for much since those dark days in your past you’d rather not think about.

That seemed to do the trick though. “Oh, alright,” she says. “But it will cost you.” Oh. “Cheer up, honey. It’s just maintenance cost. About maybe… 1000 poke per week? I’m thinking Pokemon food, the occasional massage, and don’t think I won’t train them while they’re here. I can’t let any of your Pokemon fall behind while you’re out there helping people.” She winks at that last part. You’re pretty sure your mom knows that you want to be a hero of some kind. At least you think you do.

“Actually, that sounds pretty amazing,” you say. You stand up and give your mom a hug. That seems to have caught her by surprise but she doesn’t hesitate to return it.

It usually takes pokemon two weeks to fully mature enough to battle and all that other junk. You’ll miss the little guy, but it’s not like you aren’t used to parting ways with all the pokemon your mom hatches.

“That sounds fair,” you say, indicating the sleeping Munchlax. With Robin still sleeping, you’re not sure what kind of help she’ll be. Now that you’re done with breakfast and have that matter settled, you need to decide what to do.

You quickly transfer over 1000 poke to your mom via trainer card. She still hasn’t changed the image on hers, so she looks 10 years younger. You admit that your mom is a pretty woman (that’s probably why you’re so handsome) but you’re not sure why she hasn’t found anyone yet. You decide that’s her business and you have some of your own to take care of.

You briefly consider pranking your neighbor by, like, arranging rocks in the shape of a dick or painting his house pink then politely calling him a faggot, but joining your teammates should be the priority. That’s probably what a leader would do. Plus, painting someone’s house sounds like a lot of work and you’re not sure if you want to put that much effort into your rivalry.

You collect Gojira and Vulcan and make sure their pokeballs are securely clasped to your belt. Then you head out. The walk there is uneventful, but the weather is fairly pleasant. Somewhere to the west, you see a few black clouds. It looks like it’ll rain later today. Maybe you should purchase an umbrella?

The walk to the Pokemon Center isn’t a long one, but when you arrive, you can’t find your companions. You try calling Katie twice, but you only get voicemail. Kori’s number doesn’t even ring when you try to call her. Looks like they’re busy? You look to the counter and see Robert’s stupid face. The memory of last night’s dream pops into your head and you briefly consider just walking out, but he already saw you and you see him waving hi.

You glare at Robert then begrudgingly wave back. Goddamn it. He’s grinning like some rabid fangirl. Will this guy ever cease to psych you out? One last look around the pokemon center confirms that your friends aren’t here and there’s no way you’re going to talk to Robert alone. Fucking asshole. No. You should do something productive while you wait for them to show up or call you back. You consider masturbation but you’re still looking at Robert and suddenly think it’s an inappropriate thought. Well, you should probably do what every trainer does: train.

You try to think of methods appropriate to pokemon training and you start wishing that Katie were here. She’d definitely know what to do. Then it hits you. Why not train yourself first? You think back to those old kung fu movies you used to watch. Kung fu kid had to train himself before he was good enough to train his Timburr.

You quickly change from pants to shorts and put your jacket away. You store your bag in the locker room and go outside. You summon Gojira and Vulcan. “Alright guys, today I train. And you get to join me,” you say. Vulcan is happy to do so and Gojira looks around suspiciously before nodding his head. You start off with push ups, but you can only do 12 before your arms fail you. That’s fine, you think. It’s a start. Next you do squats and you’re able to do 30 successfully. Nice. Vulcan has been trying to mimic you and failing while Gojira just watched.

Next, you go on a jog. Your pokemon gladly follow you, and you notice that they can easily keep up. You channel the will of the kung fu tiger (isn’t that some kind of pokemon?) as your lungs and legs start to burn. You manage to make it 10 blocks to the grand library. There’s stairs that go up a ways and it looks pretty intimidating. “What do you think, guys?” You ask your Pokemon. “Think I can do it?” Vulcan cheers you on while Gojira merely nods his head at you. Well, if they think so, then you definitely can. Briefly you entertain the thought that your pokemon are training you, but your focus shifts entirely to your struggle to get enough air as you go up two stairs at a time.

This is it. You channel all your energy and finally reach the top. You pump your fist in the air and yell out, “I did it!” Your pokemon cheer alongside you until a librarian exits the library to tell to be quiet. You quickly apologize then lay down on the ground. Oh man. Your body hurts, but in a good way? But also it hurts and you’re not sure why people subject themselves to this kind of torture. “I know this is supposed to be good for you,” you tell your pokemon in a subdued voice, “but what are the costs?”

You lay there for five minutes to catch your breath and do a few sit ups. Vulcan tries to copy you but ends up stuck on his back and in need of your aid. He’s heavy though and it takes considerable effort to get him right side up.

This was good though. You’re glad you did it. As you look down from your new vantage point at the entrance of the grand library, you see a familiar dress down below. Hey! That’s Katie.

You don’t think you’ve ever been so glad to see someone in your life. You go to Katie as quickly as you dare, by taking the stairs like a normal person. Each step hurts a little, but in an enjoyable way? When you get down to the street, a crowd of people quickly consume you, though people give you space as they walk by. You recall your pokemon so they don’t get lost in the crowd, then you try to be subtle as you sniff yourself. Oh fuck. You stink.

You’re just glad you’re outside, as that probably helps with the smell? You put on your metaphorical detective hat and realize you’re hatless. This feels wrong – really wrong – but isn’t it dumb to run with a cap on? Whatever. You have a cute girl to find.

You go to the last spot you saw Katie at and naturally she isn’t there. You look around, wondering why she would be downtown. The only thing here is a bunch of stores? Wait, she was probably out shopping. Ha! That was easy. A closer look reveals that you’re surrounded by boutiques and clothing stores. You fan out and it doesn’t take you long to spot the familiar white dress of your companion. She’s inside some kind of fancy women only store. You grab your shirt and notice some sweat stains.

You waver between going in and waiting outside, but you’re saved from making that decision. Katie steps out and you see the baby Growlithe comfortably riding in her purse. “Alex, is that you?” Katie’s green eyes look you up and down. You try not to pose.

“Yeah,” you say. “I’m just training my body. Y’know how it is; train the self then you’ll be ready to train others.” Yeah, you’re sure that’s how that saying goes.

“That’s not a bad method actually,” Katie says, a smile appearing on her face. “Anyways, I’m done here. Whenever I enter a new city, I like to shop around and buy more clothes. Did you know that the Pokemon Center PCs can store items along with your Pokemon?” You recall hearing about that feature.

“Of course I do,” you say. You don’t know why, but you feel the need to impress the girl in front of you.

“Oh, well I just know not to assume. You can seem pretty clueless at times.” Ouch. She don’t pull her punches, does she? “Anyways, you should take a shower at the Pokemon Center. They’re usually free for trainers. If they weren’t, we wouldn’t be much different than hobos.” Blunt. Katie must be channeling Kori right now. Speaking of which…

“Hey where’s Kori?” You ask.

“She went to find a professor to intern for,” Katie says. “She went about an hour ago? Sorry for letting you sleep, but I just wanted Lugh to get his shots as quickly as possible.” Upon hearing his name, the pup attempts a bark but fails. You pet him for the effort though.

“Um,” you’re not sure what to say. Make up is for girls, right? “Hey look, the pokemon center. I better go get clean and stuff.” You jog past Katie and enter the Pokemon Center. You go to your locker room before she enters and find that they rent fresh towels away. You pay the minor price of 25 poke for one and go the shower areas.

Most of it is public showers. You were never a fan of them, and you actually avoided showering in public at school. T-there’s already a few people here….

You decide right away that you’re not a fan of this place. You’ll never be a fan of this place. And frankly, you’re not sure why they design showers this way. You quickly strip but hold the towel close enough to preserve your modesty.

You try to act like this is nothing. But your heart is beating rapidly, more so than when you faced Team Invictus. Why do uncomfortable social situations have to be so hard – difficult – you definitely meant difficult. There’s only a few private stalls available and you can’t really tell if they’re taken or not. Steam pervades the environment enough to make it look like a foggy horror story about a nightmare town in the Midwest. You’re actually kind of thankful for it since it makes people a little harder – more difficult – to see. A quick glance around confirms that yeah – all the other guys are kind of buff. It must be a trainer thing.

Uncomfortable and kind of embarrassed, you run into the first stall you see. That turned out to be a mistake though. You find yourself face to face with another dude. He’s completely ripped and appears to be in the middle of soaping up. He’s taller than you by at least 6 inches and tan lines around his body tells you that this guy is at least a little seasoned. He also looks slightly like a model, and you find that the most intimidating detail out of all of this.

“Um, uh…” You’re a little shell shocked and not sure what to say.

“N-no,” you say. Images of Katie, Kori, and your Battle School instructor come to mind. “I’m pretty sure I don’t roll that way,” you state.

“Oh that’s too bad,” the guy says. “You happen to be my type.” You’ve never felt yourself blush so quickly. Before you can make a retort, the guy laughs. Loudly. Goddamn it! Everyone else in the room can hear him. “Dude, you should see your face.”

“I gotta go,” you inform him. You need to get out of here. This guy is too forward, and you’re pretty sure he’s just making fun of you. He protests, saying something about a joke, but you’re not really listening. You quickly abscond to the next stall and you soap yourself up quickly. A quick rinse then you’re finished. When you step out, you notice a few guys eyeing you but you don’t really give a shit. You’re passed feeling embarrassed now.

You leave the shower as fast as possible, dry up quick enough to put your normal clothes on, and get out. Never again.

Seeing Katie waiting for you is a huge relief. She looks immaculate in her white dress, sun hat, and the puppy she holds in her arms. Nothing could ruin this moment… Until Katie says, “I hope you weren’t cheating with Rogers in there.” There’s a smile on her face, but you actually kind of forgot about those rumors.

“We really need to do something about that,” you say, slightly frustrated. “These rumors are going to cockblock me one of these days, and I think I might want them dispelled.”

“I think your chance is up,” Katie informs you. “They’ve moved on to the criminal uprisings taking place up north near Fort Luck.” You weren’t aware of that. That actually sounds pretty serious. “If you addressed the media now, they would just think you were desperate for another 5 minutes of fame.” Welp, looks like you’ll be stuck with these rumors for just a bit longer.

“Hey, do you wanna catch Pokemon with me?” You ask Katie. Now that you’re going to be passing Robin between you and your mom, you’re going to need some new ‘mons in the party.

“What about Kori?” Katie asks. “She’s the capture specialist. Shouldn’t we wait for her?” Katie has a point. You were hoping to have some alone time, but you can’t think of a good enough excuse. Besides, there will be plenty of opportunities later.

“No, you’re right. We should find Kori. Didn’t she go to the university?” You try calling her but it still goes straight to voicemail. “She isn’t answering her phone. I think she turned it off.”

“Sorry,” Katie says as you both start walking north. “I told her to turn it off so the noise wouldn’t startle Lugh. I guess she must’ve forgotten to turn it back on when we split up.” That explains that.

“You should at least check your phone more often,” you say. Your tone isn’t really admonishing. At least you hope not. You were going for more of an authoritative leader type voice. Katie doesn’t respond, so you decide to shift gears. “And how is Lugh? He looks really healthy already.”

“Yeah, I just fed him again while you showered,” Katie says. You feel a chill go up your back at the mention of that place. “Anyways, your mom says he’ll mature fast. In a week, can you believe that?” You can actually, but that’s still pretty impressive. “And he’ll be better at certain things depending on how we expose him. For example, if we show Lugh nothing but battling, he’ll pick it pretty quickly. Same with training or catching. We can still show him all three, but he won’t be as specialized.”

“And what do you think?” You ask her. She’s the mom after all.

“It’s not my decision to make,” Katie says sternly. “He’s your dog, even if I’m taking care of him. Besides, I’ll love Lugh no matter what kind of Pokemon he grows up to be.” That’s a pretty good answer, actually.

The rest of the way to the university is spent in light conversation. You find out Katie’s favorite color is sky blue (which so happens to be the color of your eyes). Your response is that your favorite color is emerald green (which just so happens to be the color of her eyes). You find out she likes curry, rock music, and playing really buff dudes in video games. You think the two of you might be flirting? Though you think it’s a possibility that this is just normal, ordinary friend talk. It’s still nice, since you get to talk to a cute girl.

When you arrive, the old buildings mixed with the new makes for a clashing theme. You’re not really sure what building is what and it takes the two of you to find a help center. You’re glad Katie is with you, since she is able to do all the talking. She manages to get you both a list of all the professors looking for an assistant, but there’s a lot of them. “What kind of professor do you think she would intern for?” You ask.

“I’m not sure, but I asked around and there’s four looking for a capture specialist.” Katie marks the four professors and then marks which buildings they occupy.

“I’m having trouble telling which way points north,” you say, flipping the map over a few times. Katie merely rolls her eyes. “What? Maps were never my specialty,” you tell her. “Anyways, we’re probably looking for a professor that would still be available around this time.” You look at your poketch and see that it’s around 4 pm in the afternoon. You still have a few hours of daylight to kill.

“Good idea,” Katie says. She goes up to the help desk to ask for more information. When she comes back, she’s managed to narrow it down to one professor. “His name is Professor Plato.”

“Like the philosopher?”

“The very same.” When did Greek/Roman names get so popular? Not that it matters; you’ve finally located the guy and it only took 45 minutes.

It takes you another 15 minutes to find the building and another 5 to locate the lab. When you enter, you’re greeted by a familiar face, except she’s wearing a lab coat. “What are you guys doing here?” Kori asks, a little frustration in her voice. You were not expecting that reaction.

Before you could answer, a man appears behind her. “You were able to find two new recruits already? Genius! Simply genius.” Kori is staring daggers at you and Katie gives you a look that says, ‘what do we do?’ You aren’t sure but you think you just got recruited?

[Alright guys, that’s all for today. I feel myself falling asleep on the keyboard (even though it’s kind of early to be falling asleep so soon), but I wanted to finish this up. Next thread will be tomorrow at 3 PM UTC-6.]
