The world was once ours and we shared it equally. The forest was our domain and it stretched between all four corners of the world. We lived in peace and upheld the balance. There was death, but no suffering. It was all part of the circle of life. However, all that changed when the creatures with the Red Flower came to this world. Humans, the Guardians called them. They came in the night and burned down our forests, killed our guardians, raped and pillaged our lands. There was no end to their crusade against us and no reason behind their cruelty.

We, the creatures of the forest, were brought close to extinction before our salvation came: The World Tree, the center and the roots of our Forest that once spanned the world, called us all back to it. Within its borders the last Guardian, the Great Horned Owl, placed three barrier spells that would keep the Red Flower out and whomever wielded it. Before he fell into a deep slumber from which there would be no awakening, he placed the new role of Guardianship upon the red-eyed Awoo Race. They would guard this new forest realm behind walls of magic until the end of time.

After three centuries of peace, the first of the three barriers were broken and we received a grim reminder that the Humans would not stop until all Creatures of the Forest lay dead.

You are Lin, a 17 year old Awoo girl that dreams of becoming the Strongest Guardian and assuming the mantle of the Hero that will save the Forest Realm and all those whom live beneath the World Tree!

Last Time on Hero Guardian Quest: Chao found himself neck deep in trouble against masked humans wielding the Red Flower; Hao Sing was tasked with killing the Wild Beast that has been ravaging the Northern Legions for weeks; Lin joined the Blood Guardians, got to know her team, and was voted to become the Captain! The dangerous world outside the barrier awaits!

You inhaled and exhaled through the leather mouth-garde as you stared over yonder at the other groups of Blood Guardians in the Ichigo Company who were preparing to do what your team would be doing soon enough; pass through the barrier. You'd be lying to yourself if you claimed you weren't nervous. The last time you passed through it, you almost lost your mind and cried for hours, but that was partly also from the aftermath of everything that had happened and how you had bottled it all up with the help of your Guardian Blade. You doubted it would be the same this time, but passing through it really took a toll on your entire being, both physically, mentally, and spiritually.
And then there was also the problem of the Red Flower within you that you hadn't even considered until that very moment.

The Barrier stops the Red Flower and anything corrupted by it from passing through. I don't know if I'm considered corrupt, but there's definitely some form of Red Flower inside of me, even if we've come to mutual terms for now.

What will happen if the barrier rejects you and denies passage? What will the rest of the team think? What will Rushi do? The stress wasn't enough to trigger a panic since you've been trained against that for years, but it was becoming a burden and all the possible scenarios and consequences occupied your mind to no end.

"Team 2, you're up." Your thoughts were broken by Rushi calling for you and your team to get ready to pass through the barrier.

The girl whimpered and her breathing was ragged at best as she clung herself to her savior while the two of them rushed through the woods. The Red Flower and the masked Humans wielding it was closing on their tails. The last thing Chao remembered was killing two of them with his ambush and wounding another. After that everything became like a blur and the next thing he knew, his mind returned to him and he found himself running through the forest, one hand on his Blade and the other supporting Hin who's right leg was near useless. He had no idea what happened to the Captain or the other dying Awoo, but right now all that truly mattered was getting himself and Hin to safety.

The voices and shouts from behind became louder and louder as the pair started to slow down, both due to Chao's fading stamina and Hin's broken leg. In the end, Hin stopped Chao and leaned against a tree before slumping down on to the grass. She was exhausted and the pain from the leg was setting in more and more as her adrenaline was disappearing.

"Leave me, Chao." She coughed through the pain, locking eyes with the young Awoo kneeling before her. He shook his head violently, throwing panicked glanced backwards all the time. He couldn't let her die. Sensei wouldn't do it. Lin wouldn't do it. Not even Ming would let Hin die.

But what choice did he have?

Hao Sing found himself in his moderately large tent with a spartan-styled interior. He didn't want for much. As long as he could eat three meals per day and sleep in a soft bed, he was content most of the time. Hao was a simple man like that, but his mind was more complex than most Humans. After reading something once or even seeing it once, he could easily remember it from the top of his head if he tried. Some called it a gift, others a curse. He could always remember things he saw, but never forget them. He learned that the hard way when he tried to drink his memories away years ago.

For 3 hours he had been pacing back and forth in his tent, making plans for the journey to the cave and his possible bout with the beast living within it. He had a plan, but it was a crazy one. He enjoyed solid plans, not tangible ones where he was almost blind to every single possible scenario. The sun would set in a few hours, so unless he wanted to reach the cave at night, he would have to leave with his batch of men soon.

What I wouldn't do for a drink right now. - Hao threw a glance at the half-full expensive wine bottle left behind in his tent a few nights ago after the Knight-Commander had paid a visit to him. The Lieutenant had of course declined the alcohol, but the bottle remained and he still hadn't thrown it away or returned it to his Commander.

The pit in your stomach didn't help in the least, but it was happening whether you wanted it or not. If you refused to pass through the barrier, questions you couldn't answer would arise. It was Team 2's turn, consisting of yourself as the Captain, Jin as the Vice-Captain, Kun, Mei, and Heim. Everyone seemed a bit nervous, but Heim looked like the most collected Awoo in the group. At least you put on a good enough face to mask the fact that you were on the verge of having a nervous breakdown. This wasn't like fighting an enemy where you knew you could keep your cool long enough to prevail. This was something you had to face head on and failing to pass through the obstacle meant a fate worse than death. Maybe you were just exaggerating, but it felt that way as you stood face to face with the barrier just a few meters ahead.

"You have your orders, Team 2. Complete your mission and then return here. If you do not return within a week, you will all be considered dead." Rushi explained the grim reality to you a second time before giving the signal to start. While the rest of your team moved in on the magical wall ahead, you hesitated for a few brief moment before your legs started to move on their own. It felt as though your mind wasn't in control anymore and your body was forcing you to go through with this, or something else within your body was...

It stopped just short of passing through the barrier and you had to take the last three steps yourself with eyes closed. You felt a surge of energy flow through you that felt both uplifting and painful at the same time. In the midst of this passage, you saw something for a few seconds. A town of sorts built on several hills intersecting with each other with wooden bridges and paths leading ever higher to new and taller hills. There was six hills, or grass-covered mountains if you will. Three were of the same height, the next was taller, the other taller still, and the last towered above them all. The settlement was protected by walls of wood, towers with archers in them, and pits dug to separate the grassland from with the actual hills.

In your vision you spotted Humans of all ages and sizes traveling in and out of this settlement. The top, the highest peak, was shrouded in a thick mist that your eyes couldn't see through. However, within the mist you saw something glowing in a color foreign to you. It called for you. It mesmerized you. It made you feel safe.

You tried to take a step closer, but then you heard a cruel and familiar voice.

Finally! I can see you again!

Panic overtook your body and with that, you crashed into the wet grass face first beyond the barrier. You heard Mei's laughter before someone helped you up on your feet again. Heim let go of your arms and took a long look at you.

"What's the matter, Lin? It looks like you've seen a Banshee." He jested, but in reality, you were more pale than your ashen white skin could reveal.

>Tell them of what you saw while passing the barrier. Excluding the voice you heard.

Should I tell them? If I do, I can't mention the voice I heard. Even I don't know what or who that is.

All eyes were upon you when you tried to find your balance standing on two feet again. It felt as if you flew in that... Dream? Vision? Memory? Kun and Heim looked slightly concerned while Jin gave you a glance before he resumed his watch over the forest to make sure the group wasn't ambushed. Mei just looked confused and curious as to what happened to you. She must have taken the trip through the barrier well both times she made it; today and 3 years ago. Your uneasy look met Heim's gaze and you made your decision.

After explaining what you saw in your vision while passing through the barrier, everyone had a mix of a dumbfounded and outright weird expression. Were they trying to process what they had just heard and how to react to it or were they doubting you? You'd receive your answer shortly.

"Are you sure you saw all that, Captain?" Mei was the first to speak up. It seemed like she wanted to trust you, but it sounded too far-fetched.

"I know what I saw." You confirmed to which Mei only shrugged. Whether or not she actually believed you, she was inclined to follow your lead nonetheless.

"Let's say you actually saw this... settlement. What do you think glowed at the top?" Kun shimmed in with his question. You had no idea and no matter what you could think of that fit the description of something that glowed, it didn't feel like the right answer. Heim remained quiet. Maybe he didn't know how to respond or maybe he was thinking too much on it to actually ask about it? No matter the case, at least you have revealed what you saw. Maybe it could prove useful, but the chance of stumbling onto said village was slim.

"Who cares about all this?" Jin gave voice to his frustration, "Our mission doesn't involve this 'Misty Hill settlement'. We can tell Rushi about it when we get back, but until then it doesn't matter."

>Jin had a point, but you still want to keep an eye out for these hills during the mission.

Your Vice-Captain made a solid point, but your curiosity have always been both a character strength and a flaw for some of your decisions.

"Yes, let's focus on the mission for now and then we can put some more thought into this when we're back in safety. Move out, Team 2!" You ordered them firmly and confidently through your mouth-garde, even though you planned to keep one eye on the mission and the other on looking for any tall hills/mountains here in the North. This was the first time you were on this side of the former forest realm after all. You were familiar with the terrain, but not the local spots of interest.

"Yes, Captain!" Your team responded and so, the five young Awoo Blood Guardians leaped into the thick scores of the forest. Your mission? It had three parts, each of equal importance:

First, Team 2 were to sneak up on one of the main encampments for the Human Legions up here in the North and map it out for a future assault happening within the span of a month. They still needed the information to make proper plans for the entire Ichigo Company. You must NOT be discovered because if the Humans knew the Awoo knew of their location, they would pack up and move to another disclosed location. It would take the Guardians a few more months to find them without getting themselves killed.

The second objective for Team 2 is to double back and head towards the mountain range. Your team are to join Team 4 and help them agitate the Wild Beast that have taken holding down in one of the crystal caves. It used to be a sentient beast, but ever since it was corrupted by the Red Flower a year ago, it has slowly been losing its mind. Now it's nothing but a shell of its former self. An insane beast. It will be your task to send it against the Humans like the past Ichigo teams have. A cruel, but necessary move to remove the Humans from the North.

The last, and hardest objective will be to assassinate a certain Human target here in the North. Rushi handed you an envelope with a name and description inside to open once you had completed the first two tasks. If you failed, the envelope had to be destroyed. Heim had argued that this was a flawed method, but Rushi countered that if any of you got captured, you wouldn't be able to disclose that information under torture. It was a dark thought, but anyone would probably falter in the face of torture under both steel and the Red Flower.

However, as the Captain you had to make the choice of approach to the Main Settlement. It was bound to have patrolling guards both inside and outside its perimeter, possible even those towers with archers in them that you saw in your vision. It was a Human invention after all. If you found some high ground you could scout the entire camp from above in one go, but you ran the risk of being spotted from afar quite easily. Your team could move in closer from several points around the camp to map it out like that, but then you ran the risk of getting caught in a near unwinnable fight if you're discovered, but you would have the cover of the forest to your advantage.

Well, you asked to make these choices when you nominated yourself, Lin. Get to it, girl.

>Use the forest as cover.

The Team stopped just short of the main encampment that Rushi had marked down on the Vice-Captain's map. On the way you had informed them of your plan to use the forest as your cover to sneak closer to the camp. From afar they could spot the crimson colour of your equipment, but in melted in well enough with the autumn leaves of the trees in this region. The perfect cover, and if you got into a fight it might mean failure on your first task, but at least you could escape easily and then meet up again, right? At least that's what you hoped for if you got caught, but the ideal scenario was to not be seen after all. Your team agreed with your plan and split up at the point where you stopped. One by one, the team's members slowed down and stealthily made their way to their given positions. They would each map out the part of the encampment that they saw and then they could piece it together into a more detailed report for Rushi.

You found a spot in a tree filled with big and thick red, orange, and yellow autumn leaves. From here you could see a good portion of the Human camp. They didn't have walls because they wanted to be able to move out on a second's notion, but you were right when you assumed they had guards patrolling both in and outside the encampment and they even had six wooden towers they built with at least 2-3 archers in them. There was a ladder reaching from the ground up to the top of the tower for the archers to climb up and down from, so there was probably more archers and they worked in shifts. This was all just assumptions on your end, but they were well-founded ones based on what you saw right now.

As you continued to scour the camp your eyes landed on a peculiar Human. He was clad in a full black steel armor, with a black cloak to boot. He looked nothing short of a demon towering above the other Humans around him. However, something else caught your attention when he turned about; the sword he was carrying. It was Chao's old Guardian Blade!

How can a Human wield that thing? They told us Humans can't tame Guardian Blades...

Other than confusion and curiosity on your part, a seething anger started rising to the surface inside of you. However, the moment it did you noticed that another Human, with a mask of sorts attached to his shoulder, who walked behind the giant human was suddenly on full alert and stared in your general direction.

By the tree, did he sense my murderous intent!? If he could feel it, Humans are more dangerous than we initially thought! Calm yourself. - You forced yourself to calm down by regulating your breathing, but if Heim suddenly started to get angry, you would all be in deep shit. But if the Human sensed your intent, why didn't he alarm the rest of the camp? He now knew that there was a sentient creature out there who wanted him and his fellow Humans dead, so why not warn them all? What was his deal? After calming yourself, the Human straightened his back and flashed a shit-eating grin in your direction without actually locking eyes with you. He knew you were there, and he was challenging you! This man was dangerous. Too dangerous.

Lucky for you and your team, the human with the mask on his shoulder and the large human entered a tent in the middle of the encampment and disappeared from sight. A sigh escaped your lips at the relief before you started to map out what you could see of the camp as best you could. After you were done, you quickly left the camp's vicinity. You didn't want to risk meeting that human with the mask or anyone of his kind. If there were more of him, your team might just be in deep shit right now.

Upon reaching the rendezvous point you had all decided on, you met up with Mei and Jin who were already done with their part. After a few minutes of waiting, Kun also joined the others. 20 minutes passed by and there was still no sight of Heim. Jin cautioned the others to wait while Kun insisted that we'd send someone. Mei looked to you for a decision.

>Trust Heim and wait for him a while longer. If there's more than one Awoo in a single spot, the risk of getting caught triples.

>Fetch Heim yourself.

You decided to leave the group to go get Heim yourself. Jin was still present, so at least you didn’t leave the team without a leader if things went wrong. Hopefully Kun would still settle for following Jin, but it shouldn’t get to that.

You backtracked your way through the forest, leaping from stone to stone as to not leave any tracks behind for any Humans to find. You kept yourself away from the camp’s edge, but you couldn’t take the safe route to where Heim was assigned to hide and map out the encampment. That would take too long and it would be time wasted where anything could happen. You didn’t worry about Heim as much as you worried what he might have done. If that Human could sense murderous intent and if there were more of him skulking about the human camp, Heim would be found out quite easily.

Upon reaching your team member’s position, he was nowhere to be found.

“You gotta be shitting with me, Heim.” You muttered irritably under your breath as you began to scan the area, looking frantically for any signs that could tell you why Heim was missing and where he had disappeared off to.

By the tree, this isn’t the time for one of your so-called ‘adventures’, Heim!

Suddenly you heard something to your left, a muffled cry, just past the edge of the forest surrounding the Human camp. With a leap, you found yourself up in a tree that almost didn’t cover you from the sight of any humans below just to get a view of what had made that sound.

You immediately spotted Heim and his Guardian Blade was dug deep into a Human between her neck and shoulder. She was struggling in Heim’s iron-grip, but she was too weak to wrestle herself free. It didn’t take long for her body to become limp like a boneless fish and for Heim to lower her to the dirt, pulling his bloodied blade out from her.

Your eyes locked with Him and he appeared crazed with his wide, bloodshot eyes. He didn’t look the same as the Awoo you parted with almost an hour ago.

“No. Not now...”

>Whisper to him, try to calm him down and get him to follow you.

“Heim?” You whispered with a raised voice. His eyes didn’t waver from where you sat in the tree. You continued to call out for him with a soothing voice, trying to return him to his senses and get him to follow you. Gazing to the left and right past the tent Heim had killed the woman behind, you didn’t see anyone patrolling nearby, but you’re certain that the man with the mask had felt Heim’s enormous killer intent. It was just a matter of time before he sent someone or went to check it out himself. Probably the latter since he seemed keen on challenging you with his grin.

Fortunately, you succeeded in calming Heim down enough for him to return to his senses once he followed you into the forest. He leaned against a tree and started to breathe rapidly, recovering from losing his mind to the bloodlust lying dormant within. You threw a glance his way. He really hated Humans to his very core. It was almost a principle for him.

“W-what do we do with the body, Captain?” He finally spoke up, still trying to regain his energy and control over the rest of his body. “If they find it…” He drifted off, slamming his clenched fist into the nearby tree. He knew he had fucked up and put the entire mission on the line. There was no point mouthing him off right now. That would have to wait until later.

An idea struck close to home and you leaped back into the camp, grabbed the body and made your way back into the forest.

“If we’re lucky, they’ll write it off as another loss to the ‘hostile’ wildlife out here.” With a smirk, you passed Heim by and the Awoo followed you in tow as best he could. You made sure to cover any blood trails with dirt and stones on the way back. You could possibly dump the body somewhere far away from the camp and leave the rest to the actual hostile wildlife.

By the time you returned to the spot where you left the others, another hour had already passed. Luckily, the rest of them waited with all the patience they could muster for your return.

“By the fucking tree, What happened, Heim?!” Jin immediately started to mouth off Heim. He was prepared to take the brunt of it head on though.

>Order Jin to wait with that until after the mission.

“Jin, cool it.” You stop your Vice-Captain from going off the rails on Heim. At least for now. He gives you an angry glare, but you shoot it down fast, “We can teach Heim a lesson AFTER the mission. We’re still not in safety by any accords. C’mon now, move out.” To which Jin sighs and shakes his head, but the point got across to him nonetheless. Heim gives you an apologetic and thankful look, but you ignore him.

Don’t think you’re out of the danger zone, idiot. You’re dead when we get back past the barrier.

With the first out of the three tasks for this mission completed, Team 2 continues their journey across the northern autumn forest that was once part of the first Forest Realm. Next destination: The Mountain range and the Wild beast living within one of the caves dotting across it. The journey will at least take a few hours, if not a day, but at least you feel more comfortable than you should be knowing you aren’t anywhere close to that camp, the giant man, and the other human with the mask anymore.

____

While Team 2 makes their way through the autumn forest, heading towards their second task, two other individuals find themselves in different sorts of difficult situations:

Chao is still struggling to get Hin and her broken leg to safety through the Western Forest while being pursued by the Tree knows how many Humans, especially those that can wield the Red Flower. Will they make it to safety or will he have to sacrifice Hin to survive and exact vengeance one day?

Hao Sing has been tasked by the Knight-Commander to slay the Wild Beast that has tormented the Northern Legion for weeks after their scouts found a cave that might be its lair. The Knight-Lieutenant and his squad of 15 soldiers reached the cave by dusk. Hao hopes to find and slay the beast before it gets dark. Judging from earlier reports, the beast can see in the dark covers of night. Something a Human can’t.

Drip. Drop. Drip. Drop.

The sound echoes in his mind as well as within the cavern. From the outside it appeared a naturally formed cave with a lot of vegetation growing around and over the entrance, enough so to almost conceal it from a glance in the dark. The air within is thick with a foreign smell and breathing becomes a choir the further in you go. Although it isn’t pitch black inside the cave; holes dot the roof of the cavern all the way forward, illuminating a small path of sorts as long as it’s day outside. The cave refused to dive deeper underneath the mountain, so as long as the sun was up, Hao and his men wouldn’t need to fully rely on their torches.

Following the path of light, Hao began his march further into the cave’s system of tunnels, left hand upon the grip of his sword and the other grasping over the stone walls that he pass by. His men’s uneasiness reached the point where even Hao could feel it. They whispered among themselves, and some of them had already pulled out their weapons.

Deeper into the cave, the Knight-Lieutenant heard the distinct sound of a large animal snoring and breathing. He swallowed whatever fear he had stuck in his throat and braved his way further forward to areas where the light shone less and less.

Eventually he came upon a crossroad where the original path split into three paths. A small set of stairs that looked too crude to have been cut from the stone by hand lead up to a smooth encircled platform that overlooked three open holes in the walls large enough to let a full grown man through. Inside them there were more crude stairs cut from the stone.

The wild beast can’t fit through these holes. It must have another hole it uses as an exit and an entrance. If we’re lucky it doesn’t know about this entrance and we’ll catch it unaware!

However, something struck Hao harder than his hopes to kill the beast: He didn’t hear the beast breathe anymore. He turned about and shot a silent question to his fellow men. They shook their heads and raised their weapons, instantly understanding what their commanding Knight asked. Hao sighed in defeat and turned his gaze back towards the three holes.

All of them were pitch black, with little light to illuminate the path. They all seemed to lead the cavern deeper under the mountain, where the light of day was of no use. Hao decided to investigate each hole before making a proper decision.

From the left hole he only heard the occasional dripping of water echoing from below. The water was coming from somewhere so it was possible that there was water in that direction. Upon checking the hole in the middle he heard nothing, but if he concentrated he could spot something red a long way down into the abyss of darkness, or was it just his mind playing tricks with him? From the hole on the right he heard faint traces of wind, as if he was sitting inside a cozy house, away from the windows, on a windy morning.

In the end, Hao couldn’t ascertain to which hole was the right one, but sooner rather than later he would have to make a choice.

>Pick the Middle Hole.

After a short discussion with himself, the kind that Hao always finds himself in the middle of when there’s a hard choice to make, the Knight-Lieutenant reaches a decision. There’s probably a water source to the left so that’s a good place to look for a thirsty beast, and to the right there’s some wind blowing about further down so it could possibly lead to an alternative exit, but why would the beast sleep right by the exit, unprotected by anything?

Hao can’t exactly fathom the beast’s thought process, if it had any in its current state, but he could bet his next meal that if there was any place the beast would make its home, it would be close to a heat source. Something told him that whatever red he saw deep down in the dark abyss of the hole in the middle wall, it was a fire of sorts.

It’s in times like these that I wished I could speak to the Fire like those priestesses, but then again, the price they seem to pay for it doesn’t sit right with me.

“Listen up, men.” Hao raised his voice to address his soldiers, but not loud enough to cause an echo to travel further in, “Whatever we face down there, know that we are Humans. We brought the Guardians of Old to near extinction centuries ago. If we could kill those powerful beasts, then we can kill this beast.”

His men nodded enthusiastically and unsheathed their longswords and readied their shields. The three knights Hao brought with him gripped their claymores tightly and while clad in full body suits of steel, they marched after their Lieutenant. Hao tried to wear that kind of armor once. It wasn’t his thing. Too heavy and too clunky for his fast-paced fighting style. He preferred fast and precise strikes with a sword rather than massive, semi-slow, and hard swings and thrusts that could near split stone.

With one hand holding his unsheathed sword and the other holding a torch, Hao Sing led his men down a spiralling case of stone stairs, leading ever further away from the surface and ever so closer towards the red light at the end of this narrow tunnel.

What they could expect at the end of it, no one knew, but they would soon find out.

Nightfall had already set in and passed by the time Team 2 reached the cave where they were to meet up with Team 4. You and your company of Guardians found yourselves up in some trees close by the entrance when you called out to the other team with some bird sounds. You weren’t the best at it, but it sounded authentic enough to work. Hopefully?

However, you received no answer. From no bird nor any of the members of Team 4. You tried a couple of times more, even to the point where Jin joined in with an attempt. Nothing. It was as if they had gone on ahead without you or something had forced them away from the cave entrance. Humans? Why would they scour the Mountain range? It’s far removed from the actual barrier where their main focus has always been.

Have they found the Wild Beast? Impossible, right? Rushi didn’t mention anything of the sort.

“Team 4 is nowhere to be seen.” Jin reported after returning to his tree from his short scouting trip.

“Then what do we do? Captain?” Kun added, looking to you.

“We could just go on with the mission without them? I’m sure they’ll go on with their mission if they notice that the wild beast is out and about, killing Humans like it should.” Jin suggested, motioning towards the cave entrance nearby.

“Can’t we just go look for them?” Mei ignored Jin’s irritated glance and looked your way the same as Kun, “Whether they’re dead or alive, they can’t be too far from their mission, right?”

Your eyes landed on Heim, but he didn’t seem to be part of the conversation at all, not by words or ear. You’d imagine he was still coping with his fuck up and how he almost failed everyone.

You and your team could also travel further up the mountain range and look for the other entrance that Rushi mentioned. It would be harder to spot in the dark given the cover of night and the thick vegetation that’s most likely covering the entrance. It would shield you from any Human attention though, if they have passed through here and travelled into the cave. A long-shot, through and through.

How hard would it be to split into two groups? Captain and co-Captain leading each team. One could go into the cave while the other scouts around for team 4
>>
>>291150
Not hard at all. You would be splitting the team's power in half, but cover more "ground". If enough people want to, it can be arranged, but then you will also have to decide who goes in what part of the team and which side does what.

To some it might seem cold blooded, maybe even cruel, but you have absolute faith in Team 4, no, in all the teams that left the barrier with you and your team. If you didn’t trust them, then what is all this for? In the face of Humanity and the Red Flower, the Creatures of the Forest must stand united, one way or the other.

It’s a naive way of thinking, but you refuse to let yourself think Team 4 has died or lay wounded somewhere. They must have spotted humans and retreated to a different location, so that means there’s humans skulking about inside the cavern with the Wild Beast. They’re most certainly after its head because of what it has done. They’re welcome to try.

“Team 4 has moved on to their second task.” You said it both to confirm it to yourself, but to also somewhat reaffirm it with the rest of your team. “They’ve entrusted us with this task. Let’s not disappoint them. We’re heading further up the range of the mountain to locate the second entrance.” - Kun was still hesitant about leaving before looking for the other team, but he caved and re-joined the team when you all leaped onward through the forest hugging the roots of the mountain.

Given how many hours it took you to find the second entrance, you’re not surprised that first light revealed the location of the hole in the mountain covered by an extreme amount of thick vegetation. You almost regret this decision, but now isn’t the time for regrets. At least you have found a way in, but at what cost? Have the humans already slain the Wild Beast? Impossible, right?

“What’s the plan?” Mei asks aloud, marching next to you as the team make their way into the cavern.

“If there’s still Humans around, kill them and then we’ll agitate the wild beast to get it out from the cave and into one of the human encampments.” You explain before cutting down the vegetation and vines covering the entrance.

“Fucking freedo--!” You hear your Guardian Blade scream in your head for a second before you sheath him again. He’ll be pissed later, but listening to him and Mei at the same time was just going to be a hassle.

“So how are we going to agitate the beast?” Mei’s line of questioning continued.

“Stab it a little?” Kun jested despite the glare he got from Jin, branding his own Guardian Weapon; two small scythes held individually in each hand. It reminded you of Heim’s old gauntlets for a moment. Some Guardian Weapons don’t turn into blades and even split into two smaller weapons. This both has pros and cons to it. You could use them separately, but if they’re kept apart from each other for too long, the Guardian runs the risk of losing the power their weapon gives until they’re reunited.

“In a way, yes.” You go on, catching Jin by surprise, but he didn’t voice it. He could only assume there was more to it, and there was. “Rushi told me the wild beast made its home in the crystal cavern because the crystals make it calm. The only times its gone on a rampage was when the corruption inside its head became unbearable or if one of the crystals fell from the roof of the cave and embedded itself in the creature’s hide.”

“And since we don’t know when its next corruption rampage will happen, we have to use the crystals?” Mei summed it up perfectly.

“Exactly.”

One point of concern is that you want to be prepared for the wild beast, but you have absolutely no idea what the effects of the crystal has on touch to the Awoo race. Rushi failed to mention that. Maybe it’s not dangerous or maybe he thought you to have more common sense than that?

The fact that you hesitate and your gut feeling is telling you otherwise, you decide that it’s not worth finding out whether the crystals have an on-touch effect on other beings than the wild beast. Even when Kun decided to crouch down to touch one of them out of curiousity, your warning gaze stayed his hand.

The party of five Blood Guardians from the Ichigo Company continue deeper into the cave, passing by troves of crystal samples along the walls and a roof filled with them. However, they start to become more and more scarce the further down you venture until there’s only an occasional crystal sighting here and there.

“Would the beast really sleep so far away from the crystals, the very same ones that calms it?” Kun mutters his question aloud, not really hoping for an answer.

“Who’s to say the crystals we passed are the ones it likes?” Offering what wisdom she has, Mei added her sassy tone to it. She’s still somewhat of a bitch when she’s irritated or on edge, but she is part of the team so you let it slide for now.

You’re about to tell them to quiet down when there’s a sudden rumble to your right. With what little time you have and what reflexes your body offers, you throw yourself backwards, pushing both yourself and the nearest companion behind you away from the wall. You land atop a confused Heim right before the wall you stood next to a second ago bursts open in a sea of rocks and stones.

A large beasts leaps backwards out from the hole in the wall, as if it’s fleeing something while still facing it head on. Out from the hole comes five, six, no, Seven Humans! Two are clad in full steel armor, wielding claymores, four of them wield boiled leather with steel pieces strapped atop in vital parts and the last Human looks entirely different than the rest.

He’s the leader.

The wild beast in question look slightly wounded, but the human party doesn’t look any better with some wounds and exhaustion plaguing them. They must have fought against this beast for hours. Only the leader takes note of the nearby company of Guardians and he dives for the ground, obviously up to something. The Wild Beast also notice the nearby Awoo and divides its attacks between the two parties, slashing and biting at them with claws and fangs.

“Orders, Captain?” Jin calls out before equipping his own Guardian Blade followed by the others brandishing their weapons.

“Kill their leader!” Your orders immediately take effect as your entire team leap into the fray, moving with great agility through the battle while dodging both swords and the large claws swinging from both directions. The Humans want to help their leader, but it’s far too obvious that if they divide their attention, the front they’ve built against the beast will be fall to ruin and they will all die. They can only hope their Knight-Lieutenant can handle the five Guardians moving in on him.

Upon reaching the human, Jin goes in for a slash across his back where he’s crouching on the ground. However, the Human was ready for the incoming Awoo as he turns about faster than a normal Human should be able to move and thrusts something sharp straight at the Vice-Captain’s throat. Jin changes course mid-air a second from death and crashes into the stone wall behind the human. From a quick glance, you immediately spot the crystal the Human is gripping after he tried to embed it into your vice-captain’s throat. It doesn’t seem to do anything to the Human on touch.

Still doesn’t prove anything for us Awoo. He’s fast and precise with his attacks, that’s for sure.

“C’mon. Attack me again.”

Your mind freezes on the spot. Who said that? Did the Human say that? Did you just understand him? With a panicked gaze at your teammates, you realize that you are the only one that understand the Human. He doesn’t speak the Awoo language or the Forest Language, otherwise the others would have reacted as well.

How can I understand him?

M-- Me.

Your recognize the voice within as the one coming from the Red Flower living inside of you. The very same one you made a pact of sorts with. Did he translate it for you?

Before you can think more on it in the heat of the moment, Mei and Kun has launched a simultaneous attack against the human leader.

“No!” You cry out, but it’s already too late. The Human’s kick throws a stone from the ground, hitting its mark straight in Mei’s face, sending her to the ground mid-flight. He spins about, dropping the crystal and in what appears as one quick motion, picks up his sword that was resting off to the side against a tall rock and slashes horizontally at the incoming Kun.

The Awoo let out a howling cry as he crashes next his brother. With Jin, Kun, and Mei out of the count for the moment, the Wild Beast and the Humans fighting behind you, there’s only you and Heim against the Human leader. He doesn’t utter another word or taunt. He just stands there, sword at the ready, clearly out of tricks and ready for a more fair fight than one versus five.

If our little flame can translate, can we taunt the human back, preferably at a time where he might flinch mid swing and give us an opening?

“Heim.” You address the Awoo standing with his weapon in hand right next to you, “Take care of the mission.” You start to move in on the Human before you.

“But Lin--!”

“He’s mine.” You growl, your sight never faltering from your opponent. Heim gives up on trying to get a say in the matter and makes his way back towards the battle between the Wild Beast and the Humans. A fight that have decreased to two Human Knights standing amidst their comrades mangled corpses while struggling against a violent and merciless beast. While he tries to figure out how to cut down a crystal from the roof and make it crash into the wild beast, you’re off to face an obviously more skilled and experienced fighter.

The Human leader throws his blade from one hand to the other, watching your every move with a hunched back, ready to strike, block, or dodge at any given notice. He’s either waiting for you to to initiate this duel or he’s looking for an opening. If you’ve judged your opponent correctly, like the trials taught you, he’s doing both.

“Mind telling me how you can understand me?” He asks out of the blue, catching you off guard for a second as he moves in for a lightning fast thrust. You double back with a leap just in time before engaging him again with a few steps forward.

“My words doesn’t matter to a dead man.” You retort, directing a vertical slash at him that he quickly parries and lands a kick in your stomach, sending you reeling backwards before regaining your balance.

“Ah. Guess I can’t understand you in return. A shame.” He gives way to a disappointing half-smile before your duel resumes in full, steel clashing on steel.

“He’s too fast for us, Lin.” Your Guardian Blade grunts in the midst of your focused mind, not really helping your mood at the moment. “If this goes on for much longer, he’ll spot the chinks in our defense. We have to fucking do something. Soon!”

____

While the Guardian Captain and the Human Knight-Lieutenant continue to fight back and forth, vying for each other’s lives, Heim has finally found a way to break off one of the crystals. The Wild beast has been pushed into a corner by the human knights’ swinging claymores, so while it’s almost standing still it’s finally time to execute his plan.

With an excellent and precise throw, the stone connects with three crystals shafted together in the roof and all of them come crashing down at once. They lodge themselves into the beast’s back and the effect is immediate; the Wild Beast let out an insanely loud roar, shaking the very walls and foundations of the cave as its eyes turn from yellow to pitch black. The knights pause in fear and that’s all it takes for the beast to swipe at them, tearing their upper torsos away from their lower bodies like they were nothing but wooden dolls to the giant wild monster.

This is the part where Team 2 was going to flee the cave, but that’s not possible with three of them down and one of them in a fierce duel with the last human standing. The monster turn its raven black gaze upon Heim.

You lock swords with the Human and you quickly notice that he’s throwing quick glances behind you, not enough to take advantage of.

“So that was your mission, huh?” He comments, but you already klnow what he’s talking about and what caused the loud rumble. A drastic situation calls for drastic measures, even it puts you and your team at risk, but you WILL get them all out of this alive!

>Try to finish off the Human quickly. The sooner he dies, the faster you can get your team out!
>Break off from the Human to save the others faster. No doubt, he'll flee.

>Break of from the Human to save the others faster.

You have already taken a huge risk. It isn’t worth risking more to kill this human. You break off from him, leaping past him. Without a word spoken, the human understands that the duel is over and immediately takes off towards the exit where you came from. Fortunately, the Wild Monster reacts to the Human’s movements and sets off after him, leaving the two of you behind to get your team back on their feet. Mei wakes up easily from some light slaps to her face. She comes out of her unconscious state looking a bit pissy, but she quickly change her demeanor to a more surprised outlook.

“What happened? Did we do it?” She grips your arm, staring at you with confusion written over her face.

“For better or worse, yes, we did it.” You reply, looking over at the pile of mangled human corpses. A painful grunt shifts your attention to what’s happening behind you. Jin is up on his feet and helping Heim get a wounded Kun up on his feet and to support him between them as well.

“He has a shallow wound on the right side of his chest, nothing fatal.” Jin reports as they pass you by. You help Mei up on her feet as well before the entire Team 2 start to make their way out from the cave. The team remains quiet throughout the journey to the exit, saving all questions and unwanted comments for later. It’s not until you’re closing in on the exit when you remember something crucial!

You’ve completed two of the three objectives, which means you can finally open the envelope Rushi gave you! You struggle with it for a few moments with one hand while the other is under one of Mei’s arms, supporting her still unbalanced body and mind. Your curiosity won’t let you wait.

“What the fuck...?” You hear Jin mutter right as you open the envelope and the letter within only to find a short text with Rushi’s messy handwriting. The description of your target fits perfectly with someone you’ve seen before… And the name at the end of the description pretty much points to only one person as far as you know.

A loud thud and the sound of hard pouring rain forces your attention up from the letter to what’s happening at the cave’s exit. You spot the human leader you fought earlier, his body lying in a red pool of blood and water, torn to pieces. .

He got out of the cave only to die to the beast.

However, what’s more interesting, and even more frightful is the towering man standing next to what appears to be the headless body of the former wild beast. A good amount of purple blood is dripping from the human’s blade that’s more akin to a huge slab of iron than anything else. The rain is pouring onto his full-body suit of black steel armour as he gazes upon the five Awoo before him with his faceless helmet.

You swallow hard, trying to get rid of whatever’s stuck in your throat. The only thing that crosses your mind when you look upon this black clad demon of a Human is the same name you saw written at the bottom of the letter from Rushi.

The Grim Knight.

so... some sort of special skill we get due to lin's symbiosis with her little red flower, though my bet is that it'll just be enough to slow him down so we can gtfo rather than actually kill him.
>>
>>295589
that's another thing, your willingness to kill off characters is...exciting?! I'm just so used to characters we follow always surviving somehow so, this add's an actual element of risk to the quest.

Just a question, where do you get the art? Is it something you found on the internet? Also good job with the writing!

It's one of the things I enjoyed immensely (and sometimes hated, mind you) from the ASoIaF series, if I can be That Guy.

No character has plot armor, even if I got plans for some of them all the way to the end of the quest, whatever that may look like.

Hell, I had plans for Hao Sing that stretched towards the very last battle of the quest, but if the dice and circumstances decides it's time, then it's time.

>>295609
I mostly just google "Awoo" and add words to that effect. Nothing fancy really. I did get some of them from pixiv as well.
>>
>>295609
I also search for "Momiji inubashiri" who's the actual character the Awoo meme is based off of.
>>
>>295605
This. A baller aspect of this quest.
