Due to popular demand, there will now be (occasional) dice rolling. Since everyone also wants to participate in the rolls, I have decided to change the mechanics I originally had (which was a 2d6 success system)

However, rather than do the traditional roll dX and take the highest, we'll try something a little different:
1. You roll 1d6,
2. I will then add all the rolls up to get a total.
3. The catch is that I will subtract 3 from every roll. This means that rolling 1, 2, or 3 will result in a negative score and deduct from the total.
4. Anyone can roll as many times as they like
5. Three 1's in a row (going by post not person) is an automatic critical fail

Rolls will mostly be done in combat and for skill checks. I will always let you know when to roll.

>>280231
That seems like a very bad system.
>>

unless the subtracted amount differs depending on stuff we have practice in.

I like that we are trying something better than 1d20 or 1d100 best of 3-5

Though my preference is for the 3d10 with a DC

John's right. There's no sense in staying here while you can't even summon an elemental. You don't want to hold back your team. You head back for the surface. On the way you PM Lelogas, his name isn't blacked out for once.
"Ah Bob. Haven't heard from you in a while. How're things?"
"...Fine. Listen, I need some help. Do you know of a way to recover from permanent wounds?"
"Permanent wounds? Like what?"
"Like a severed limb."
"Damn. What happened?"
"Nothing -- just...is there any way?"
"Well if the arm is still intact a cleric should be able to join it back. If the arm is destroyed a cleric with the Healer perk should still be able to regenerate it, but over time."
"What if...what if the arm -- the stump I mean -- is poisoned, and the arm is also...gone?" There is a pause. You hold your breath.
"...It's harder. Maybe even impossible. Even if the poison leaves your system, without the arm the cleric won't be able to heal it. And regeneration won't be possible so long from the inception of the wound. Anyway why're you asking this? You haven't received such a wound have you?"
"...but there has to be a way!"
"...I honestly don't have an answer. If there's one person who can help, it has to be King Show"
"Wait Phil A. Show? Isn't he a bard?"
"Yes, but he's also a skilled alchemist, the best in the world in fact. If he can't personally help you, he can direct you to someone who can. Though its difficult to get an audience with him and I've heard he asks the impossible in return for any favor. In the meantime...you're better off using a prosthetic. If you push ether into the prosthetic -- your friend John should be able to do it -- you'll be able to move the arm normally with time. That's one way. I'm sorry I wish I could be of more help."
"No. You've been very helpful. Thank you."
"Take care of yourself, Bob."
"Yeah...say hi to Robin for me."
"Heh. Will do."

You're back in the inn now. Night has fallen and the stars are out. The moon is a thin sliver in the sky, waxing.

If implies that you are making some sort of statement, rather than a question, improper for the english language.
Next, it's "can", not cna
Also, you didn't have to put the in, as 4chan can be referred to that way.

You head for Ben's room. His door is open. He's sitting on the floor, facing the window. Faint moonlight illuminates his form. He sits cross-legged, his one eye closed, the other -- the lidless ivory -- removed and its home hidden in shadow, and he hums a soft song beneath his breath:
...as dew upon the leaves
I drew water where my darling dwells
I drew water where my darling dwells
Sweat and water as I heaved

Moon as silver as the gold
Sun as strong as the rain
The land my darling dwells
My home and breath, love and pain

On the fields, wheat and grass
Honeysuckle in the spring
And I left my darling as
Autumn leaves fell on wind
Autumn leaves on the wind

And hills as dew upon the leaves
I drew water where my darling dwells
I drew water where my darling dwells
Sweat and water, as I heaved

You trip into the door and it creaks. He stops his song but does not turn.
"Is that you lad?"
"Um...yeah. I'm sorry -- I didn't mean to disturb you-- I-I'll just go." You turn to leave.
"You wanted to ask me something?" You stop.
"It's not -- it's nothing."
"Ask, lad. It's about your arm isn't it?" You stare the foreign stump. The strangeness of it.
"...yeah." Silence. He doesn't turn.
"...well?"
"D-did you ever train a leftie?" He starts laughing. Not a soft chuckle either, a room-shaking belly laugh.
"That's the spirit lad! Hahaha! I knew I made the right decision when I chose you!" You smile. "Aye lad. Don't worry about the arm. The sword is only a tool after all. A killing instrument. But a sword does not kill, any more than an instrument makes music. A musician makes music lad; a warrior kills." You venture inside. You sit behind him. He doesn't turn. You carry conversation through moonlight.
"What makes a warrior?" You ask
"...you didn't dodge."
"What?"
"You didn't dodge the bite. Because you knew if you did, the one behind you would be in harm's way. You saw pain at the door, but did not flinch."
"And I lost my arm for it."
"So you did. But the warrior's spirit is a still greater loss. To lose flesh is nothing. To lose to fear, that is a small death." Don't be afraid Peter, you have to be strong for your Mom. You have to be strong and not afraid. Your life will be hard Peter, but fear makes life harder than it really is. So don't be afraid. Even if I leave, I won't really be gone. You understand? Never. So don't fear. Don't be afraid. You wipe your eyes.
"...but will you still teach me the sword? Even as I am? I mean I could get a prosthetic or something but it'll never the same..." The words are hard against your throat, fearful of what he might say.
"Didn't I tell you? Until I die, lad...until I die." A deep warmth rises from your stomach to your face. You feel relief, sudden and total. You get up.
"Thank You." You say. Ben says nothing. You go back to your room and rest.

In the morning, you eat breakfast with John and Ben.

What will you do today?
>>
>>283351

Morotown is practically a metropolis. Granted, it doesn't have the city-sheen of Dorter Magic City but you're certain you can find some one to sell or fashion you a prosthetic.

You've never really explored this town (partly because of its size and partly because you hadn't stayed here very long) but you see that its divided into several districts. There are the usual stalls set up on the sides and corners of roads. Vendors selling fruit, fish and dishware, but there is also a guild district where skilled laborers offer their services: artisans, blacksmiths, and their like. You also find a Gangsta Guild branch office here. You can probably find someone to make your prosthetic for you here.

Moving toward the coast and near the Wurm docks, there is a bazaar which sets up every morning and lasts until sunset. It's right next to the fish market so it smells, but exotic goods regularly flow through from the ports to here. You could probably buy a prosthetic here.

Check pricing/quality on both
>>
>>283779
Have a look at prices and quality on both before making a decision, but I'm leaning towards Gangsta guild
>>
>>283779
Check prices. We won't be using it forever so it's fine to choose the cheapest option here.
>>
>>283785
Buying from the guild will be cheaper (generally 10% less) but buying from a private artisan, while more expensive, will be of higher quality.

Scouring the markets, however you find that a good quality prosthetic made of good wood costs 20-30gp. One made of steel is 3x that price. Whereas more exotic materials, like animal bone or rare metals are 4 or even 5x that price. These prosthetics are standard-issue as well, nothing more than a three-pronged claw. If you want to get something a little more interesting, the price stands to further double or even triple depending on the desired complexity.
>>
>>283810
I say a good private one at that point. even at 5x30 being 150 and tripled thats only 450
>>
>>283810
Let's get a cheap steel one. We'll only need it to block attacks. We will have to find the materials on our own to craft a new arm. We can do that while working on the violin.
>>
>>283823
>>283827
I think we need to atleast look at the high end stuff, see if there is any sort of stat/ritual boosting effects to mess with. Worst case scenario is that it is 450gp from the numbers given
>>
>>283848
I'd still be hesitant to spend most of our gold on this. Odds are we lose it within three threads anyways.
>>
>>283857
I am also hesitant but I would like to know and make an informed decision. I posted the 450gp figure as an outside estimate to show that we have the money, if we choose, to spend on something high end. I want to know, I don't want this to be another "herp derp, mixing chemicals is just like butchering dead animals! now i am the blind." scenario
>>
>>283941
Fair enough, that's fine. Even if we don't get one of them it gives us a look at what we should aim for.
>look at higher end arms like >>283823
>>
We indirectly got our gold from having an elemental kill a glitched boss 3 times our level. 450 gold is expensive as fuck for something we know nothing about.
How can we move it? Do we have to do magic, create new rituals?
Get a simple metal one and train with it.
Go read a book on the subject, and crafting materials. And this time, get it for a few fays so we can read all of them.
can we time-skip a few days of staying at the inn reading?

Then, we'll know what to do, maybe go look for legendary materials with a good metal arm.
(And a shitty one in out backpack, in case we fuck up the good one and need to wave for magic dance or something.)

We mostly heard of one tree, but a dwarf/weird animal told us about metals from his home. We at least need some for screws, we can get weapons/armour too.

If we can go full wizard on our arm, can we throw explosives from afar? We are alchemists, there is a way to grind with ease there.
>>
>>283823
>>283962
The highest-end one you can find is going for 430 gp. It's made of Kupeta bone and wrapped in ox-hide. The 'hand' is made from the tongue of a nob (which, according to the merchant's description, is basically a giant crab/whale creature), it's a soft ,spongy material that can change hardness and shape at will. It's also extremely flexible and malleable.

There is a another one going at the same price, it's dwarven made, fashioned from a blend of silver and orichalcum, giving it the dual properties of effectiveness against incorporeal monsters (spirits and their like) and magic resistance (not as much as Khat wood though, you checked). It's fashioned like an ordinary hand, however a hidden compartment contains a 2 foot long blade (made of the same materials as the arm). The hand retracts into the wrist allowing the blade to come out as an extension of the arm. The merchant (also a dwarf) assures you that orichalcum by itself is as strong as steel and mixed with silver it is made slightly heavier but at least twice as resistant to damage.

But wait! There's more! There are few that are actually out of your price range. One made from solid dragon bone, with the hand made from dragon claws, is priced at 900 gp. The merchant boasts that the claws can cut through anything, even a dragon's scales, while the bones are as light as a feather. Another is a literal hand cannon, a hollow tube made of cast iron, heavy, but it can shoot anything smaller than a softball at high velocity, using a powerful spring. It's selling at a mere 700 gp.

For the sane and reasonable, there are also general purpose prosthetic arms made of steel. Human made, mass produced but cheap (relative to the other stuff anyway) at 75gp.

To custom-build any of these is going to require additional gold (of course) for services rendered.

What do you want to do?

>>284346
We can time skip reading stuff, sure. But things will be happening around you in the meantime.
>>
>>284374
>Buy a 75gp prosthetic arm
The kupeta bone and dwarven arms are nice, but beyond our budget I think. Something cheap to tide us over is enough.
>>
>>284374
>mass produced
That's not reassuring about the risk of losing an arm in this world...
>>
>>284374
I vote for the Dwarven made one.
>>284384
We have the 500 from when we got "mugged"
>>
>>284374
>buy dwarven made
>>
>>284374
The Dwarven one is honestly a good investment. If we buy a cheap arm, we're guranteed to lose it, but if we buy this basically indestructible arm, as long as we don't drop it down a well, it will be reattachable. Combined with the fact that we have a surprise sword that we're currently training to use, makes it the best choice.

The only other conceivable thing we'll use that money for is buying books and regents, and we can connect regents by adventuring.
>>
>>284448
I know, but it's risky to spend all our gold on one item. We've already critfailed twice, we should aim to keep some gold in reserve for when we critfail again.
>>
>>284477

Then we just straight up lose money. Hypotheticals can go any which way one pleases.
>>
Hey guys, wouldn't it be cool if we just collected a whole bunch of different arms and changed them depending on the situation?

Durable. Useful. And above all cool as hell. The dwarven arm is pricey but you have gold to burn. With John's help (he's been avoiding you lately, both eye contact and company) you bring the price down from 430 to 387 gp. A kingly sum, but not one beyond reach.

The dwarf is delighted. He takes your measurements and carefully reshapes the opening of the arm to fit you. It's heavy, heavier than a normal arm. But not encumbering. He offers to have his assistant (a young girl of 12 or 13) 'activate' the arm by pushing your ether into it. You refuse. John can do it.

You head back to the inn to eat lunch. Ben went out to do some errands so its just you and John. You ask him to help activate the arm.
"Sure." You lift the metal hand onto the table and John goes to work. There is only silence and sound of crowds in the distance.
"John, everything ok?"
"Hmm? Yeah man. Everything's f-fine. Why do you ask?" You can feel warmth coming from the false limb now. It's working.
"I don't know. You've just been a little...weird lately." A sharp pain goes down the length of your arm. "Ah! Shit!"
"Are you alright? Shit. I'm so sorry!" John jumps up.
"It's nothing, Jesus. What's wrong with you man?"
"Sorry."
"...You know it wasn't not your fault right? You did the best you could. Besides, its no biggie, plus, this arm is fucking awesome."
"I just...I froze man. If I had thrown the shield just a second earlier. If I had been in front..."
"What are you stupid? What's done is done man. So that's what it was? You were feeling guilty? Fucking Christ, I thought we were friends man."
"We are!"
"So then what's the problem? It's a just game dude, its not like I lost an actual arm. Besides,
I'm a motherfucking cyborg wizard now. That is literally the coolest shit imaginable...other than Captain America, of course. Avengers assemble!" You raise your new fist (which is slow to respond, but seems to be working) and salute. He laughs.
"Fuck youuuuu." He says.
"Heh. Seriously though. No sweat man. I probably would've died if you hadn't healed me in time. So no need for any guilt. We watch each other's backs. That's how it goes. We good?" You offer your new hand. John nods, grabs it and you brohug.

At this point, you have some downtime. There aren't any pressing events that you know of coming up. And you have enough money to last you a while, at least a few months (although Olekville has been on edge lately).

Maybe it's time to make some of your own goals. You still want to build that violin for John. You also have to find a way to regenerate your arm. And let's not forget, you still have to find a way to get out of this game (though you've been enjoying yourself too much as of late). You're still level 16, you should probably do something about that too.

What should you focus on first?
>>
>>284984
We should go on a date with John. Just kidding.

We need to get gud. I say we start by buying a book that'll give us more ritual options and then work on using either arm for swordplay.

Also: Just realized I mistook Olekville for Morotown. Nothing changes, but just ignore the description of the town in the last post. There's no coast, no docks, no guild-office, and no fish-smelling bazaar. You bought the arm from that dwarf who sold/made you your carapace boots way back when.

Sorry about that, it won't happen again.

It's not that I refuse to, it's more that I never really learned how to properly (communicate). I'm a lot better when talking (verbally).

I never said I was a special snowflake, you did, and I the end of the day, I don't care at all what you think. I also don't think it would matter too much since most of you seam to just hate my ideas without giving a good reason as to why. Now who is lazy? [Translator's note, we don't hate your ideas, we just honestly have no idea what your ideas are because we can't understand your misuse of english] :P oh, and spell check doesn't always work for me. This is true.

>>285429
>everyone has issues with spellcheck/auto correct

Spellcheck and auto correct are two different things. Spellcheck lets you know you probably fucked up, auto correct thinks you fucked up and fixes it for you. If you're on a computer, you don't have to worry about auto correct. Instead you just see the red lines underneath a misspelled word and you can right click the word to pick the one that you actually wanted. If it doesn't show the word you really want then you fucked up terribly or you need to make sure it's in the program's dictionary, so google what you typed to see if anything comes up. If you were correct, right click the word and add it to the dictionary. If you weren't, pick a synonym or google the definition. Or look through a dictionary.

Though I replied to you, this was for the benefit of the snowflake Aussie kid with the Drunken Irish stand.

Level up

Regarding the violin:

From your discussion with the vendor at Dorter, the best material for stringed instruments is a light but hard wood, allowing for good sound transmission. In that respect, Khat wood is ideal, save for the fact that it is very difficult to work with (since nothing can cut it except Khat itself). The other component, the strings, is commonly made from the guts of various livestock. Sheepgut is popular. Recently some guilds have also experimented with cheaper, synthetic steel strings. These actually have a comparable quality of sound but are basically a third of the price and much more durable. But that's only if you're satisfied with the mediocre...the vendor also told you of a legend he'd heard, about the 'Lutheran Instruments' -- a set of instruments commissioned by King Phil A. Show and made by the legendary craftsman, Luther.

According to the legend (this was before King Show was king), Phil sought out Luther and asked him to make a lute for him. Luther agreed, but only on the condition that the materials be the finest in the world and that Phil seek them out himself. So Phil wandered the world looking for the best material. He brought back many things, but none of them satisfied Luther. In the end, Show almost gave up. But he decided to try one last time. He went far to the south, to Noutria. Beyond the desert, to the east, to the Hole (which they say leads to the underworld). And he went into the depths and they say, he brought back the still beating heart of a demon. And from its sinews, he made the strings of his lute.

Anyway there was enough left over to make a few more instruments, which Luther gave away. But they say the music played from those instruments has power over life and death itself.

Needless to say, your gift has to be at least as impressive as that.

>>286449
Welp. Looks like we have to get gud to slay a demon. Or maybe we can somehow cheese it by killing a dragon and using its heart to craft the strings?
>>
>>286749
>Looks like we have to get gud to slay a demon.
>a demon

Can't just be any old demon we find. It's gotta be the biggest, baddest demon in all of the underworld. I vote we kill the devil himself and use his heart for the strings.
>>
>>286449
>>286749
>>286817
In that case, let's look for a library of some sort to research demons
>>
>>287883
First we should not die to gatorants. Show is level 100, the demon he killed was probably higher than level 20.
>>
>>287887
True enough, let's do some grinding then
>>
>>287905
the orichalcum is good against spirits, yeah? Does that same benefit go for undead as well? we could go to the prison. Or we could go to the hive, a Common or Greater wind elemental should be able to boss them around enough. John's shield should do some good there as well, downing flying targets for us to hit with our sword-arm.
>>
>>288145
You're forgetting little one, We cleared the Prison. The level 35 Deathknight was the Gatekeeper, and beyond him were OP Lichs.
>>
>>288671
I'll ask you to not be a condescending prick to me or anyone else in this thread, it doesn't help the game or your point.
But yeah, still works though, hinging on a BIG maybe, but orichalcum is also magic resistant. thought honestly I'm just blind arguing the point since we don't know to what extent this works. Though with our greater wind elemental and John's wind elemental powered shield we seem pretty darn set to go after the giant bees. Our Greater Ele should be able to boss them around effectively while John's shield whomps them decently. We're much closer in level now than before and the Gatorant hill seems to be a bit of a bust.
>>
>>288975
Okay lil' buddy, Gatorants are literally the weakest scum opponent we have come across and we were severely mutilated by one, Overpowered Supernatural 2nd Floor Lichs aren't the way to go.. Ok? Do you understand this? We need to find opponents we can easily kill, Like a group of simple Owlwasps! Ok?

Is OP kill?
>>
>>289897
You basically cleared a level 35 mini-boss by pseudo-glitching the game and taking potshots at it from a safe distance for about 3 hours. That got you to 8 levels in one jump, as well as the treasure chest filled with goodies (journal, potions, scrolls).

In other news, I have to go on another extended break (until this Saturday) due to irl issues. I won't post any new updates till then, but this is a good chance to ask any questions about anything that's happened thus far -- I can at least answer those.

I'm also going to make some major changes to the dungeons/troves. Am I right in thinking that everyone is going for level ups?
>>
>>290430
Yes. It just felt very underwhelming to face a monster 4 levels higher than us, lose our arm, and only get 20 XP.
>>
>>290433
I'd like to remind everyone of this:

>>230513
"Of course, while gatorant armor is quite resistant to cutting and stabbing, its rather weak against magical attack. The worker carapaces are anyway, the warrior carapaces are much more resistant to magic. And the King carapace, ha! Well -- I have never seen one, but they say magic cannot affect it at all! Hohohoho!"

20 exp is a lot, since your level up is always out of 100 and your splitting exp with party members (let's not forget you didn't land the killing blow either)

It just felt like very little gain for such a big loss, esp with how fast we leveled up before. I also assumed that our swordmaster would be levels above us and thus unable to get experience from these comparably weak enemies. Which brings up the question: can npcs level up as well?
>>
>>290649
>>290656
QM has to go due to IRL problems until saturday and thus can't really do much aside from answering questions.
>>

Ben is not in your party list, though he *is* in your 'party'. NPC's cannot be added to the party list. I won't spoil the nature of NPC's just yet, but yes, they can get stronger (albiet not with levels).

As for loss and gain, they won't always be proportionate, if they were, the game becomes predictable and therefore, boring. There is also a big difference from killing a boss-tier monster that is more than 4x your level and killing a regular grunt 4 levels away.

Long story short, I like surprises.
>>
Before you can do anything you need to level up and gain skill. Everything else will have to wait. As it is, it doesn't look like you can make any progress at Gatorant Hill. There are two other troves here: Wartun Tower, which is ruled by an Ice Mage and the Hedge Maze which is guarded by scorpifawns. Thus far, the farthest you've gone in any trove has been the 4th floor of the Isten prison. According to normal rpg rules, and the fact that these dungeons are called 'troves', there should be treasure somewhere in them -- likely the deeper levels. Isten prison didn't feel like a traditional dungeon, there's something going on there.

Based on what Lelogas and others have told you, it seems the difficulty of any particular dungeon quickly caps at a certain level. Since its very difficult to get past level 70, and since it doesn't look like you get any exp from killing monsters below your level, that must mean all the known dungeons have a level cap at 70. The question remains, how did people like King Show and Brainy314 surpass that limit? But those are later concerns. For now, you need to rapidly level up and get to a place where you can attempt more difficult tasks.

There are a couple more things you've picked up from playing the game. First, class is important. If nothing else, it determines what kinds of perks you have access to, and as the clerics at World Cup showed, perks can completely change the role and nature of a character. Second, while there are theoretically no limits imposed on a character class, there is the limitation of time and focus. Trying to be a jack-of-all-trades leads to weakness in everything. Instead, as with traditional rpgs, compensating for weaknesses with party members seems to be the best course of action. Since there's also a soft level cap at level 70, you need to figure out what kind of character you want to build early on and distribute stat points accordingly. Versatility is good, but spreading yourself too thin is dangerous. Third, monsters have weaknesses and strengths -- maybe all monsters -- but the way to fight them doesn't seem to be as simple as point and click. Utilizing the weaknesses, even they come close to being actual bugs, like in the case of the Death Knight, seems to be the best course of action. There doesn't seem to be any hp for the monsters either, one solid hit is enough to kill them, the challenge is in landing that hit. Fourth, troves don't seem to have spawns but seem to be part of the world itself. That means clearing a trove completely should also change its nature, maybe something else takes over, maybe the game just changes it, or maybe it just resets, either way you'd like to find out for yourself. Fifth and final, there has to be a reason why its so difficult to get out of the game, something which has to do with the mechanics of the game itself. Brainy314 indicated that Phil A. Show knows something. You don't doubt it.

However! First things first, where will you grind?
>>
>>300066
Welcome back OP!

We should grind in Wartun Tower. If possible we might catch glimpses of the Ice Mage and learn things? If not, it's likely ice enemies which should (probably?) be easily taken care of with fire.

You should play to your strengths. Wartun Tower is ruled by an Ice Mage, which means whatever creatures are in inside are weak against fire. Fire, you got. Your flame elemental should also take care of the freezing temperatures inside the tower. You discuss the decision with Ben and John. They're on board.

The tower is a short distance away from a road leading north out of the town. It's a large structure, at least 10 stories, with a stone foundation and marble brick walls. Despite the outside heat, the walls of the tower are covered in a layer of frost. As you approach the double doors leading inside, you can feel the temperature drop several degrees.

You had better do your ritual now, or else the cold will take you.

Of course, empower works on any ritual (but not spells), but you can only use it once a day.
