You are Prince Meirion auk Gwyrren, the only sane man in a royal family with dubious concepts of strategy, justice, taxation, and governance in general. You have made it your goal in life to keep your family on the throne and your head firmly attached to your body.

===============

After escorting Princess Reagan to the palace, you went ahead to take your proper place in the welcoming committee. Reagan's arrival was much the same as Princess Agda and Laila's, and your father once again invited your guest to a private dinner. For a man who dislikes the frivolities of royalty, he sure loves his dinners.

Then again, it might have been your mother's idea. It would explain how you ended up sitting between Reagan and Agda and across from Laila, with Olwen next to Laila. It's an arrangement that makes absolutely no sense, but you can't turn down your mother.

You really wish you could though.

"I was surprised to see you came here, Princess Reagan," Agda says. "I imagine such a joyous celebration would be painful for you."

"It's best to look towards the future than to dwell on the past," Reagan says. "I'm quite optimistic about my prospects, but I heard some rumours that Svekka was having some small problems. It must be difficult for you to be so far away from your kingdom at this time."

"I can trust my father's vassals to keep their peace while my father's industrialization project proceeds," Agda responds. "There are some difficulties, as with any period of transition, but Svekka will profit greatly once it's all settled."

"I hope your father can obtain his fair share of those profits," Reagan says. "Svekka's wealth is well-known, but people can be much more complicated than coins. I hope you don't get swindled out of what's rightfully years."

It's like a bloodbath with words, which somehow makes it worse than a bloodbath with swords.

"Perhaps I should ask Prince Meirion if he can assist me." Agda turns you. "I heard you were quite competent in the more subtle matters of the state, your highness."

And you just got stabbed.

"Indeed, his highness' manner is quite deft," Princess Reagan says. "Taking advantage of such skill without giving anything back would be ungrateful, wouldn't you say?"

"Indeed, such a thing would be absolutely disgraceful," Agda says, "but if Prince Meirion wants to share my part of Svekka's wealth, I don't think I would object. If anything, I find the possibility quite thrilling."

In the brain.

Perhaps you shouldn't have put quite so much effort into appealing to Princess Agda's taste. Olwen and you're mother aren't saying anything, but you know they're enjoying this as much as you're not.

Across from you, Laila tilts her head and looks at you quizzically.

"Your highness? Is something wrong?"

Either she's completely oblivious to everything, or she's the most dangerous person in this room. You can't really tell at this point.

>[Sovereign/1d10] Calm down Reagan and Agda for now. You're all neighbours, so you should at least try to get along.
>[Intrigue/1d10] You're completely capable of saying something that will satisfy both Reagan and Agda. Probably. Maybe. If you're lucky.

You smile politely and help yourself to another bit of steak as slowly as you can to give yourself as much time as possible to think about something to say. When that doesn't work, you help yourself to a very to a very slow sip of wine as well.

"I still have many matters to consider," you say. "Wealth and talent are both crucial to a competent, and some decisions must be made with extreme care."

There, that should be enough to buy you some time.

"Ah, yes," Agda says. "Please forgive us. I believe we've both been under a certain amount of stress lately. It's difficult to cope with sometimes."

"It's quite shameful that we bothered your highness with our petty problems, especially at this time," Reagan adds. "We shouldn't talk about such heavy subjects during a welcoming dinner."

Laila looks at Agda and frowns slightly. "Sister, if you're overburdened, you certainly shouldn't be talking about work," she says. "Didn't you say you were going to enjoy yourself while we're here."

Agda smiles at her sister. "Of course, Laila," she says. "I just got carried away from a moment."

You certainly dodged a bullet there. For a moment, you were afraid Agda and Reagan were going to stab each other. Since you're in their way, it would have been very inconvenient.

Still, considering their positions and they dangers they have to manage at home, you can't really blame them for being so… invested in the matter.

The rest of dinner passes without incident, and you join Myrddin and Olwen in your office once the princesses return to their room.

"That was amusing to watch," Olwen says. "Shame on you for leading those ladies on."

"I'm not leading them on," you say. "As far as I'm concerned, they're on equal standing at the moment, and I don't have any intention of neglecting either of them - or Archduchess Aleksandra, for that matter - until I make a final decision."

"I'm glad you're taking this seriously," Myrddin says. "But what do you want to do about those assassins we spotted earlier? We should deal with them quickly before they have a chance to cause problems.

You can just have them killed and go to bed, or you could investigate this matter personally.

"You're too tired to kill people?" Olwen asks. "That's not like you."

"I'm a prince," you say. "I have to delegate every now and then. What do we know about the assassins?"

"They split into three groups and went to different - but equally disreputable - inns," Myrddin says. "Smugglers, mostly, but also the occasional bandit or thief. One of them belongs to you, actually."

"They didn't make any arrangements in advance?"

"None that I'm aware of," Myrddin says. "They knew where to go and what to say, but that's all. They didn't make any special requests either."

"Let's go," you say. "Hopefully, we'll find something."

You give Myrddin some time to send out the order and for his people to carry it out before leaving the palace.

Despite the late hour, the streets are still full, mostly with drunk people. A few of them are belligerent, but many are stumbling about half-asleep. The guards keep an eye on them just the same; the lightstones keep the streets illuminated.

Myrddin casually walks by a sausage skewer stall and speaks to the owner. He gives the owner a small bag of coins and returns to your side.

"It's done," Myrddin says. "It was all hidden and quiet. We'll need to dispose of the bodies quickly, but we'll have time to visit at least one of the inns they stayed at."

"What are our options?"

"There's the inn you own, a second inn that's under your uncle's control, and a third one that belongs to some petty noble," Myrddin says. "The evidence should be much the same wherever we go, if there is any, but if we take the time to break into your uncle's inn…"

"We'll go to my uncle's inn," you say. "Come to think of it, how much longer before he gets here?"

"I'm expecting him to show up after the Roseans get here," Myrddin says. "He's making quite a few stops along the way."

"Is that something we should be concerned about?" Olwen asks.

"Not according to the information I have at the moment," Myrddin answers. "It all looks like legitimate business, of course, but I am keeping an eye on things just in case. If anything, my gut says he's just trying to be late rather than planning something."

"I'll keep that in mind," you say. "Let's get going."

The inn itself isn't too hard to find, and Myrddin's people have left a subtle mark beneath the appropriate window. You just need to climb in without getting caught.

You look around to make sure no one's around climb up the side of the inn. Myrddin's wife pulls you up.

"Hello, your highness," she says. "We killed the people you wanted dead." She points at the corpses piled up in the corner of the room.

"Thank you, Nimue."

She helps pull up Olwen and Myrddin while you examine the room. There isn't much to see, really. There are some pouches of money, as well as the expected weapons and poisons, but something is missing…

"This isn't enough," Myrddin says. "You can't carry out an effect assassination with this kind of equipment."

"The assassins wouldn't have brought their own equipment with them," Nimue says. "The risk of getting caught would have been needlessly high. They must have bought these things here."

"But this place is back by my uncle," you say, "so they should have excellent gear for assassinations, not cheap poisons. There's something going on here."

You put sentries in dark corners so you can have some advance warnings and take a look around the floor and pick a few locks to peek inside the rooms. Several of the rooms are prepared for guests, but still empty. That means the inn must be expecting people soon.

You follow Nimue down to the lower floors to see if you can find out more. Fortunately, the dining room is packed and no one gets in your way. Nimue pauses in one of the hallways and holds up a hand to signal you to stop.

"The space between these two rooms is too large," she says. "There's a secret compartment here."

Nimue looks at the wall and presses a few spots. After a few tries, she pulls a section of the wall open to reveal a hole filled with weapons and poisons which are much better than the ones you found on the corpses. They're all tagged and numbered, waiting to fulfill some order.

"More assassins will be coming," Nimue says. "That's why the others had such low-quality gears; they didn't have priority."

"And the most suspicious party is my uncle," you say. "Do you think he could have prepared this for someone else?"

"It's unlikely," Nimue says. "If he did, then it's probably for one of his closest allies. Assassins need preparation, but preparing too far in advance creates security flaws, such as the one we see here. This equipment was most likely prepared by Prince Aled for his benefit."

There's certainly no shortage of people for him to assassinate in Aurwain.

"Can you tear this whole place down?"

"It's difficult without killing everyone inside," Nimue says, "but I think it should be possible. I can just take some of their equipment."

"I don't want to make too much of a mess," you say. "I just want to force whatever assassins my uncle is expecting to go somewhere else."

Somewhere you control or have better access to, for example. Even if you make this building useless, you'll have to deal with the assassins somehow.

"Very well," Nimue says. She cracks her knuckles and gets to work.

While Nimue does her job, you return to the room to speak with Myrddin and Olwen.

"We found what we were looking for," you say, "but there's a problem. It seems my uncle had plans to bring assassins of his own into the city. I want to burn this place down before doing anything else."

"You know this is going to cause a panic, right?"

"It'll be less of a panic than if foreign royalty is assassinated in Aurwain," you say. "Besides, there are guards everywhere. They'll manage the panic."

"We won't have to worry about excessive damage," Myrddin says. "Nimue's work is extremely precise."

You wait silently until Nimue returns and gives you a thumbs up. You stealthily creep back out of the inn. As soon as your foot touches the ground, you hear several muted explosions. The walls crack, but they don't fall apart immediately. Still, you take this as a sign that you should run as far away as possible. You don't want to be here when people come to investigate.

"That will destroy the supplies," Nimue says, "and the walls will have to be repaired before the inn can be used again. It will take a long time, especially given how busy the city is right now."

You have to admit, it's a very impressive display. You're not sure you could have done it without setting something on fire.

"Looks like we're done for the night," Olwen says. "It's time to go back."

You follow Olwen's advice and return to the palace. You don't follow her back to her room though; it's been a long day for the two of you, and you could really use a good night's sleep before dealing with whatever it is you'll have to deal with tomorrow.

So you change into your sleepwear and crash into your bed until the sun rises and wakes you. That wasn't nearly as restful as you'd hoped it would be.

Still, you can't linger in bed too long. You have much to do as it is.

You decide to have breakfast with your mother. You get dressed and walk over to the dining room. You furtively look inside to see if your father or siblings are there. You're not quite sure you're in the mood for them right now.

"You can come in, dear," your mother says. "I'm quite alone at the moment."

"Good morning, mother," you say. "I was hoping we could talk about last night."

"Ah, yes, dinner." Your mother motions for you to sit down. "I think you handled it quite well, just so you know."

"Honestly, that's not much comfort." You pull yourself a chair. "I was able to do it once, but I'm not sure I'll be able to do it again."

"Oh, that's just how these things are," your mother says. "You already have Olwen, so it won't matter if other women compete to become your second consort, and I doubt your potential concubines will mind much, but for the princesses, it's very different. This can alter their kingdom's future and they know it. It's only normal for them to be enthusiastic."

Enthusiasm is fine. Enthusiasm is great! You love enthusiasm!

Just not in these specific circumstances.

"I'm slightly concerned that they'll snap and cause a war, mother," you say. "All it takes is one incident getting blown out of proportion."

"I suppose you're right," your mother says. "The way I see it, there are two things you can do. First, you can spend time with them separately. That way, they won't have a chance to fight. It'll be difficult to keep them away if you all have to attend the same function, but it shouldn't be impossible."

That does seem like the simplest option, although it might come off as a little rude if you're not careful.

"The second option," your mother says, "is to do the exact opposite. Spend time with all of them together, and try to steer the conversation towards more pleasant topics. That'll make things easier for you when you do have to speak with all of them at the same time."

You'd need to wait for Archduchess Aleksandra to arrive, but that shouldn't take much longer.

"It's better in the long term if we all get used to each other," you say. "I'll spend time with them together."

"You're not just saying that because waiting for Archduchess Aleksandra will let you put it off, are you dear?"

"No, mother," you say. "I believe this is the best approach to take."

"In that case, I'll tell Myrddin to arrange your schedule accordingly," your mother says. "If you ever want to have a more intimate encounter, you can always ask someone else. Marriage is for politics, consorts are for convenience and concubines are for sentiment, usually."

"I remember, mother," you say. "That's most of the reason why I'm doing this."

"I know it's difficult," your mother says, "but Haul means well, and his heart is in the right place, even if his mind is a little lacking in practicality."

After breakfast, your mother has to leave to speak with Mair. It seems the former maid is having some difficulties adapting to her future station and, for her sake, the Queen has agreed to teach other the etiquette of the court.

That gives you some free time.

Maybe you should spend some time with your siblings. Sure, the notion is utterly terrifying to you, but they are family, and much of what you do is for the sake.

It turns out they're both training in the courtyard, Nesta with her massive blade, and Haul with something a little more sensible, though still larger than your preferred rapier.

"Oh, Meirion," Nesta says. "Have you come to join us?"

"Good morning, brother," Haul says. "It's been quite some time since I've seen you trained. You should do it more often. You don't want your skills to rust."

"Since I'm here," you say, "I might as well spar a little."

"Excellent!" Your sister exclaims. "Come, let me see how sharp your blade is."

"I wouldn't mind sparring with you as well, brother," Prince Haul says. "I'm afraid we'll get few opportunities once I'm married. There will be much to do, for both of us."

Your siblings are on par with you in terms of skill, but your sister's sword is a little more difficult to deal with.

You try to think of the last time you did something inadvisable. You can't remember, so it's probably been too long. Time to make up for lost opportunities.

"Why not the two of you?" You ask.

"That's an excellent idea, Meirion," Nesta says. "This sort of courage is truly worthy of being called a noble attitude! As your sister, I'm immensely proud of you."

"Indeed, the courage to fight multiple skilled opponents is admirable," your brother says. "But do you have the skill to follow through with it?"

"I suppose there's only one way to find out."

Your siblings have both received the same training you have, but they focus more on duels than you do. You do have one significant advantage though. Their coordination is somewhat lacking due in part to the size of their weapons, so your rapier has an easier time finding gaps. This is especially true for Nesta, whose larger sword has more momentum to it. Prince Haul tries to cover for her, but there's a limit to what he can do while you do your best to keep Nesta between the two of you as cover.

Nesta is, of course, the first one to go down when you strike at her shoulder and abdomen.

Prince Haul steps up in her place, but now that it's just the two of you, the advantage is steadily sliding in your direction. Haul parries exchange after exchange, but you're faster than he is. As he gets more tired, you find your opening and strike, knocking him out of the competition.

"That was very well done, Meirion!" Your sister says. "A truly impressive display!"

"Indeed." Prince Haul smiles warmly and clasps your shoulder. "With your skills at this level, I won't have to worry about your safety anymore. It certainly takes a weight off my shoulders."

You smile and accept your older brother's praise. Perhaps you should find the time to do this again soon.

And that's all for today's thread. Some waifu wars, but some Intrigue as well, now that all the introductions are out of the way.

The next thread will be Friday June 24th at around 7PM EDT, same as always. Until then, thanks for playing and goodnight.

Beleaguered Prince Quest, where the waifus do the warring FOR you!

Thanks for the thread. Meirion still is the sneakiest prince in town.

I think you miscalculated the dilettante XP from the threads 24/25. We were at 36/200 before and I get to either 64/200 or 69/200 depending on how the roll after the crit counts.
