Previously you embarked upon a daring and mostly successful mission to rescue Oster and you even met some old friends upon the way! But then it turned out that the old friend wasn't quite the old friend you thought they were and now everything's gone to shit.

You are woken from your slumber by a thunderous crack, the sound of splitting stone and screams in the distance. It’s still night out and the moon is gone and there is only clouded starlight to see by. Well, starlight above and the flickering light of flame below.
Taldenral is burning.

Again.

What’s going on? Is Quedesh attacking? But why now? And how did they get in? You rise from the bed and search frantically for your pack.

Hiss is already gone and the visible footprints smashed into the cracked stone floor beneath your feet lets you know exactly what kind of a mood she must be in. Aqua is still asleep on the other side of the room. It’s a bit unbelievable that she would sleep through all of this but you can’t blame her. She’s had a very long day.
So have you. First you had to deal with the Elixir wearing off during the most inconvenient time possibly last time and now this?

You grab your pack and get dressed as quickly and as haphazardly as possible. You’re still not sure what’s going on but you can hear screams in the distance. Time might be precious commodity.

>Go after Hiss. If she woke you as she left then she must not be too far ahead.

>Wake Aqua.

>Is Oster still in his bed?

>Find the nearest person who looks like they know what’s going on and find out.

>Go after Hiss. If she woke you as she left then she must not be too far ahead.

You sling your pack on and run down the hallway. It's dark but it's not impossible to see and Hiss' footprints are easy to follow. They are etched into the floor itself.
You pass a number of people as you run. Mercenaries, snakes, the living dead...you don't recognise any of them off the top of your head and none of them look like they know what's going on.

You nearly step on a corpse as you round the corner. It's a woman with a hole in her face, her gender and the cut of her clothes marking her as most likely a snake. Nobody's stopped to retrieve her or even push her out of the way. The others have trampled the corpse underfoot.
But what kind of weapon could do that? It doesn't look like a constrictor has pushed their fist through her head, it's too clean. A projectile of some kind? For a moment your thoughts skip to the Caster in your pack.
No. That would be absurd.

You step through the broken down doors and into the mansion's garden. The ground is torn and ripped here and you can see the marks of something's passing. Great gouges ripped through soil and cobblestone with equal ease. It's like the marks Hiss left but much deeper, much stronger.
From here, you can see Taldenral burning below you in much greater detail. It's mostly near the docks and for good reason.
The fleet has moved.

You can see ship after ship make landfall in the distance. But what about the defences? The alchemists? You can't see much detail but they've already been ravaged, broken from the inside-out.
There's path of destruction almost bisecting the city and it runs from here to the docks.

Taldenral has been broken open. The Quedeshi are coming.

Hiss' tracks begin to fade, despite moving to softer earth. She must have gotten control of herself. How are you going to find her now?

>Pray.

>Just follow the deeper tracks. Can't go wrong!

>Head straight to the docks. Why would she be anywhere but there?

>See if you can find a bystander who saw her.

Tie between following the tracks and defending Taldenral. Evens for the former, odds for the latter.

>>275173
A snake dispel with possible nobbling and forcing her to fight off the other constrictors. Also if Hiss is fighting her she really needs our help. Hiss can copy Tannis powers but Tanni has so much more experience that hiss doesn't stand a chance without us
>>
>Finding Hiss is less important now that you know what's going on. You need to defend Taldenral!

You slow down for a moment and consider your options. Does Hiss really need your help? You don't know who or what is causing all this but could they possibly be more powerful than the Serpent King?
Let's face it, Hiss is probably the safest person in the whole damn city right now.

And while Hiss probably doesn't need your help there are countless people who do. You need to focus on protecting Taldenral!
But how best to go about it?

>Brew something up real quick.

>Just go straight for the docks and join the fight.

>See if you can set up a good sniper position with the Caster.

First pray to rally all the snakes for the defense of taldenral. Then set up an ambush since constrictors will hear it too and come after us. Use skinshedder to gain dragon form and burn them all as a backup

Skinshedder. Scorch them to ash and cinder. The attack our people, attack our capitol, think us as no more than fodder and food. They will die screaming.

Turn into a dragon and torch all the ships that haven't arrived yet. Maybe make a champion brew first and drink it since our scales aren't actually that strong. Douse the ships with flame and then tear the constrictors near the docks apart with our plant-dragon abomination powers

Aqua, zigzag, aash, eva and hom.

Important reminder that the deep priestess is still on the loose and may be able to wreck hiss' shit when she comes forth, so she's actually pretty fucking far from being safe. Shame Oster is still out for the count, because he'd be a good counter for her

he probably was not in the shape to tell them anything, so unless Tanni found if while soul sifting(which she doesn't do apparently) This is going to shake them up. I wonder how many have dragon scales?
>>
>You have to stop the boats!
>Skinshedder

This might just be the largest battle in your life. So why even bother to hold back anything? You make your way through the torn-up garden, stepping past snakes and bystanders until you judge you have enough room to yourself. Wouldn't want to step on anyone accidentally.

You take the Skinshedder from your pack and down it in almost one gulp, sending your thoughts back across time as you do so. When was the last time you did this? It was back here in Taldenral. You had been fighting the Snakecatcher. Things had been so different back then.

You feel a heat build up within you and you do your best to stay anchored, to stay connected to who you are. You nearly lost yourself last time. You can't afford to let that happen again.

Your human body buckles and falls as you swell and grow and burst free and the ground falls away as you lurch into the sky!
You fly upwards, your wing-beats slow and clumsy as you do your best to gain altitude. Still don't quite have this flying business down right.

You feel the roar build up deep within you and you don't bother to hold it back, proclaiming your preemptive victory cry over the burning city. Your scales are green, your tail spiked, your claws like swords and spears. You are the master of this world.

You fly over the city towards the bay and you hear people scream as your shadow passes over them. This is as it should be.
You soar over the boats already docked and fly straight for the ones still in the water.

They dare come to your land? Your kingdom? The city that your Queen had wished to crush and make her own? Then they can die screaming.
In the back of the mind, you're aware that these thoughts are unlike your own. But you're still Cennen, still yourself.

You set the first ship alight and then the second and the third. Humans and giants alike jump for the water as your lash blindly with claws and tail. A wayward jet of flame sets a fourth ship alight.

And then...a small jab of pain. You twist in the air to find a spear jammed into your underbelly, piercing the scales. How did that get there?
Your question is answered a moment later as three more suddenly sprout up from all over your body. More blood. More pain.

You clear your head. They're not spears. They're arrows from a constrictor bow. And they're coming from the last siege-ship. The massive deck is filled with constrictors, some armoured and some not. Each with an immense bow.

>Ignore them and keep attacking. You fear not the stinging of insects.

>Fall back a little for now.

>Go low and head straight for the siege ship!

>Seek to gain some altitude and see if you can divebomb them from above.

>There's nothing subtle to be done here. Ram your body into the siege ship.

Pick up one of the burning ships and drop it on the siege ship from above. It will also serve as a shield from any attackers below us

This. Use the tanglebrew to strengthen ourselves and grab the ship.
>>
>>275366

>>
>>275356

>>
>>275376
A full size dragon is apparently the size of a pyramid. If we can lift the full thing we can break one in half and then do it.
>>
>>275384
We couldn't get quite as big if i remember right, just a little bigger than the snake catcher
>>
>>275423
Nah we chose to be smaller then for practical purposes
>>
>Grab a ship and use it as both a shield and a projectile.

Another arrow lands and you roar your defiance. Why aren't your scales stopping these? You think briefly about finding a spot to transform back and drinking a Champion's Elixir but you quickly banish the foolish idea from your mind. This is neither the time nor the place for that and besides, you know that a determined constrictor has strength enough to maul even steel skin. It probably wouldn't deter these arrows much.

You sink lower in the air as you swing back towards one of the burning ships. Hovering for a moment rather awkwardly, you dig one claw into one side and manage to stretch your other foreleg into the other.
You roar once more as you do your damnest to lift the boat into the air with you. You can feel the strain on your wings immediately and you're starting to regret this decision a little.

Then the ship turns out to still have at least one constrictor left on it, the giant man swinging a seven-foot long hammer into whatever the hell dragons have instead of wrists.
The ship lurches and you nearly let it drop.

You're starting to regret this decision a lot.

You keep your grip and rise back into the air, using the ship held painfully beneath you as a makeshift shield against the arrows. That doesn't quite stop the constrictor beneath you from making himself a nuisance however!
Well, you can deal with him rather easily now. Just sweep him off with a vine! Then you can lash those vines around the ship itself and stop straining your wings.

Nothing happens. You try again but...nothing. Just you still clutching the ship, still barrelling towards the last siege-ship left standing.
It occurs to you that you are not a strange flower-man anymore. Nor are you half-plant or part-tree or whatever. You are a dragon and despite the fact that you have a little human in your head telling you what to do, a dragon is all that you are.

The constrictor finds his footing once more and smashes his hammer into your foreleg.
Fuck.
You curl your neck down and bathe him in flame but he is unaffected, striding through the fire as if it were nothing more than a light breeze. You retract your head before he can hit it.
That would explain why he actually stayed on the ship.

The constrictor winds up for another blow and your shake the boat from side to side as best you can, throwing him off balance. Another arrow wings past your shield and embeds itself in your skull, failing to do anything more than dent the bone.

You're getting in range now, enough to hurl this boat and the annoying constrictor still on board right in the archer's faces! But are you close enough?.

>Take the chance and throw it now!

>Keep cool and fly a little closer.

Fuck it, you're not going to just wait around to get hit by more arrows or let this wingless brat get off another hit. You're just going to throw both of them at the ship right now and if they miss...well, that'll be that.

You roar involuntarily as you heft the burning ship even higher in the air, letting it sway back and forth as you do your best to line up the shot.
You release it with a triumphant gout of flame, spinning the ship through the air towards your target!

Oof. That could have stood to have been aimed a little better actually.

The boat doesn't hit quite dead-on but it still slams into the ship and breaks apart on contact, scattering burning flame everywhere and setting the siege-ship alight. The arrows stop as the archer's cohesion is completely broken!
You think you see the constrictor with the hammer go flying into the ocean somewhere.

The siege-ship rocks back but it doesn't quite topple or fall apart, the immense trebuchets actually helping it keep steady.
An arrow strikes blood upon your muzzle and you recoil in mid-air.

And alas, not quite all of the archers have stopped.

>That's good enough for now. Leave.

>Divebomb the ship and try to push it over.

>That's good enough for now. Leave.

That'll do for now. They won't be meddling with you anymore! You clumsily gain altitude once more, wheeling higher and higher into the air as you leave the burning ship behind.
From here, you can get an excellent view of Taldenral as a whole.

And it does not look good.

Most of the ships have made landfall, either here on the docks or outside Taldenral entirely on the coasts to the north and the south. The docks are still being fought over but not as hard, the beachhead has been firmly established and judging by the fires and the fighting, the Quedeshi have been pouring through the city itself for some time now.

The Potions College is half-collapsed and is riddled even further with explosions as you watch.

And then your attention is caught by movement in the corner of your eye, from the very centre of the city. Half a small house is thrown up and into the air, drifting gently for just a moment before crashing back down.
Striding above the defenders as if they were insects is a 20-ft tall woman, as large to the constrictors as they are to normal humans. She is wearing little and even covered in the blood of hundreds and flashes of green scales, she is both staggeringly beautiful and frightening. A goddess of war and bloodshed in the flesh.

You recognise her somehow, even though her face and body were different from the last time you met and the recognition pulls up from within you a mad rush of terror and adoration that you didn't even know still lingered.

It's Tanni.

Why was that not a thing for annihilating the Quedeshi fleet in the first place? I don't know whether to be angry at you for pretending Cennen wouldn't remember it, or anons for not being aware that wooden ships are terrifically vulnerable to massive explosions. Even better if it's underwater.

It's starting to feel a little railroady with us not noticing things going on until she's already managed to gut the defenses.

I could go on, but I've already got enough salt for a Morton's warehouse.

Since we didn't brew up anything, we can't really do anything else, can we?

The only other option I see without retreating to brew up some decent potions is to grab her and fly as high as we can and just drop her before our mind turns to putty. But getting close enough to snatch her is just a bad bad idea.
>>
>>275859
It too late bro
This cycle of bad choices is reaching its logical conclusion
We should have never killed snake dad
We should have stayed in snakehome
But now we will die like we lived
In the hands of a giant snek
>>
>>275868
She can pretty reliably predict our every move as a human. This is something she wouldn't expect. The only issue is regaining control at the proper moment.
>>
>>275879

We can still retreat, the problem is convincing Hiss to fall back and go Goddess so we can harvest reagents to make nuclear-tier snakebreakers and glass Quedesh.
>>
>>275877
She can throw something and kill us with one superstrong throw. We should have brewed instead of charged in like a retard.

>>
>>275886
That's literally more retarded since there's no way we'd reach Quedesh before we got intercepted, and we'd get killed well before that could happen.
>>
>>275887
Seriously she can manipulate and read our every movement as a human. Stop pretending that your tactic of throwing brews together with no real thought to hopefully one shot her is the superior choice
>>
>>275887

The problem is that brewing takes time. No planning ahead means no alchemy. And this is sort of a fucked up emergency.

Quest may not end, but it looks more and more like Bad End is going to be inevitable without turning into 'Snake Guerrilla Quest'. And the anons here have NOT shown the level of planning, foresight, strategic or tactical acumen to pull that off.
>>
>>275896

I'm sorry. Who else can fly and catch us? If I've missed something, I apologize, but I don't believe I've seen anyone else turn into a dragon.
>>
>>275858
It's probably a bad idea to address this stuff but I don't want people getting the wrong idea and if people are feeling shitty about how I run the Quest, obviously I want to know.
So let's run this down.

>Why not use more Danger Flasks?
Cennen can't just pull out a Danger Flask when he wants to. He has to have Hiss helping him brew and lending her Art and it also requires a sample of venom from Hiss' Snake Empress form. It was not an easily repeatable brew.
And besides, I feel like I've given plenty of times to brew lately. People are free to vote for what potions they want to be restocked then. I've never suggested to them what potions they might want.

>Tanni faked being knocked out.
Well she's a bit hard to knock out regularly and while faking it is a bit of a stretch, I don't think it's outside of Tanni's capabilities. I actually cut a bit out of her interlude regarding certain 'death trances' and the like that the orders in Ur used to practice. Didn't fit the flow.

>I don't believe she can break out with everyone who noticed dying. Do you know how loud cracking stone is?

Anon, the cracking stone is literally what woke you up in the first post of this thread. And she didn't do it unnoticed, she did it and everyone noticed. She simply killed the snakes that were directly in her way.
This thread starts mere minutes after her escape.

Also she possesses Sidewinder and is very strong, she can move really fast in a straight line if she wants to.
>>
>>275899
Our plan is to deprive her of oxygen as a dragon to resist being controlled and then hitting her with an inhaled snake dispel when she's forced to breathe. I don't see any brilliant plans coming from you two salty anons.

>Stop pretending that your tactic of throwing brews together with no real thought to hopefully one shot her is the superior choice

Anon, Poison + Depowerment + Scale Peirce. That would cripple her. and we could easily sneak up on her since it's a big battlefield and she's got her attention split.

As a dragon we have no concept of our own weakness and She will kill us.

>>275899
>Give up
fuck you too anon.

>>275901
She's immune to fire and super strong, not to mention huge. She could throw something hard enough to kill us in one hint. Dragon instincts will not help it because dragon's think they are invincible.

>>275905
Fall back, make a brew that will take her down quickly, wait until she's paying too much attention on the battlefield to notice one human, blast her ass.

As it stands Dragon is going to try and over bear her and get ripped apart, or simply hit with something and knocked out of the air. because dragon's are Hiss tier overconfident. Cennen can't take back his mind until the potion wears off either, so he's literally no threat to Tanni now.
>>
>>275930
Lunch, not dinner. And it's canned pumpkin soup with toast.
>>
>>275911

Shouldn't. Someone has to put the fear of Snake-Goddess Hiss into the fucking Constrictors. This isn't even a 'real' Quedeshi invasion and look at how much trouble it's giving Hiss and Cennen. Multiple danger flasks and annihilating constrictor population is the only way to keep from being steamrolled unless Hiss has a spontaneous breakthrough in managing to maintain Empress form.
>>
>>275936

>>
>>275950
So you're just a guy who is overplanning shit when we're in imminent danger of dying now? Great.
>>
>>275961

Nope. Though that's part of this quest's problem. The readership regards anything similar to a backup plan as 'overplanning'.
>>
We could hit her with a rumpleskin. That would force her to shapeshift back to snake form. That tiny distraction could allow us to catch her by surprise with a Scalebane or snake dispel.
>>
>>275964
Please explain how flying to another country and leaving the battle behind will help us with this fight anon. We've gotta focus on one thing at a time right now
>>
>>275970

That'd be great, if she couldn't just dodge. Can we use/fire the caster in Dragonform? I thought it sort of melded with us when we transformed. Because turning back to human around her seems even less survivable than kamikaze dragoning.
>>
>>275964
We're in a fight to the death and you're worrying over something that may never happen. We can worry about Quedesh IF we manage to beat their assault. You should be far more worried over TAnni ripping us limb from limb over trying to nuke Quedesh in the may never happen future.

>>275970
unless she has art scales and can no sell it. Even then not enough for her not to kill us, and since we went full dragontard we won't use alchemy until the skinshedder wears off.

>>275975
Alchemy is lost to us in dragon form, if we wanted to use alchemy we shouldn't have attacked her as a fucking dragon. Should have wait until her back was turned and unloaded on her.
>>
>>275982
We can switch back whenever we like since we used a skinshedder. As long as we can regain control from our dragon half but I'm thinking she would have gained near complete control of us if we hadn't let it take over temporarily.
>>
>>275972

Again, repeating myself here for your benefit. This is a plan for the increasingly likely event we lose the city. I feel like you're being deliberately obtuse anon.
>>
>>275982
Brews that target skin or scales specifically aren't blocked by artskin
>>
>>275999
>We can switch back whenever we like since we used a skinshedder.
unless you know, we're not in control of our own body and trapped like we were when we first went dragon.

>As long as we can regain control from our dragon half
No indication we can and many we cannot
>I'm thinking she would have gained near complete control of us if we hadn't let it take over temporarily.
As opposed to either baiting the dumbass dragon into meleeing her or just knocking us out of the air with something big and heavy with a throw.

>>276000
If that happens we're fucked since the navy would catch us and Hiss would be dead, because they would kill her before losing track of her and we'd have no ships to get us of Teleran.
>>
>>276016
There are no perfect choices anon. And bitching incessantly about one we've already made is pointless and annoying. You could be doing any number of more constructive things right now..
>>
>>276016

Which is where flying comes into it. I don't know if you're aware anon, but unless you're in a schooner or clipper ship, sailing is pretty damn slow.

And we have a pet mermaid who can tow us.
>>
>>276024
Unless someone makes it abundantly clear how stupid everyone is being, there is literally no hope for Cennen living more than one more vote IF he lives through this.

>>276028
>Implying the Invasion forces wont patrol our waters.
>Implying they won't keep tracking Hiss
>Implying Aqua isn't already dead.
>Implying the Spirits would not instagib us if we came back to Quedesh

Your plan is incredibly fucking retarded.
>>
>>276033

>Implying Invasion forces have the number of ships remaining to effectively patrol local waters, let alone the rest of the coast of an island nation analogous to Australia
>Implying they CAN keep tracking Hiss
Admittedly, Aqua may be dead, but she's not essential to the plan, just a luxury.
>Implying the Spirits can instagib Spritbane and alchemy'd up Cennen.

And then Anon was the retards.
>>
>>276041
>Implying the Spirits can instagib Spritbane and alchemy'd up Cennen.
The very much can unless they perceive him a non threat. The only thing that might kill one is a dispel brew, and most of our other brew WILL NOT work on them at all. The spirits we've beaten through a combination of luck, more luck and them underestimating us. These were WEAK, and world weary spirits at that.

>Implying Invasion forces have the number of ships remaining to effectively patrol local waters, let alone the rest of the coast of an island nation analogous to Australia
Most of Teleran is wasteland, they have many aquatic snakes, and will be brining in more boats as soon as they report success.

Without aqua we literally cannot get to Quedesh as all the sailors are dead and no one but a Quedeshi sail master know the way.

>Implying they CAN keep tracking Hiss
Given all they need is a little of her blood? Yeah they can. Snake art.
>>
>insulting each other instead of brainstorming
We're all on the same side here guys. We still have those gaseous lethal venom brews which are worth a shot but she might have the venom immunity snake art. A serpent bane would be pretty devastating to her since it would disconnect her from all her souls that she seems to rely heavily on. The only problem is that she would have to either drink it or have it enter her body via wound or syringe injection which would require hitting her with a scalebane first.
>>
>>276033
>>276041
Why would aqua be dead? Last we know of her she's still sleeping at the mansion
>>
>>276062
Also I think snake breakers fired from a caster have the potential to at least slightly injure snakes with artskin and dragon scales. Like with Sarminda and her arm wound when a shot glanced off of her.
>>
>>276064
No champion brew and still asleep she's liable to die in it.

>>276062
Like I said we needed to brew, but now we're dead. Blew our one surprise shot on lel fire when we know dragon scales are piss common and negate it. We need to run, because there is NOTHING we can do to beat her, presupposing going full retarded dragon doesn't make escape utterly impossible.
>>
>>276071
She's not going to let us hit her with a caster shot. She's not stupid and has felt what it could do. We'll be dead before we load since we drew her attention.
>>
>>276059
They don't have that many aquatic snakes, and their current naval ships are wrecked. They're not reporting jack.

It's like you don't even into strategic mobility anon.

And you say that like getting Hiss' blood is easy. Damn man.
>>
>>276075

Dragon fire and depriving her of oxygen so she has to shut her yap or pass out from smoke inhalation is our only real card to play due to previous fuckups, Anon.
>>
Ouro ded?
>>
>>276071
>>276075
Both of these are right, we need to retreat, if we can, and restock.
Going to throw this out there, even if it feels like cheating: we have the theoretical groundwork for the wishbond restoring brew, we could put eva and hom to work on it. We could wish for tanni to kill herself or becone fanatically loyal to hiss for the next hundred years or something like that
>>
>>276106
We've already got snake breakers anon. I don't think retreating is an option here.
>>
>>276094
The only way we're getting her to fall back and flee is she thinks she can't win. That'd require her to get hurt fairly badly to even consider it. So yeah if we're running they will have her blood.

The still have the landed ships to sue and will press Telerans into their service for patrols provided they don't just unleash ishmin over every square inch of the land.

>>276112
Then we're dead. because we cannot beat her right now.
>>
>>276112
>>276115
We commit then, and try to stay alive until hiss arrives
>>
>>276115
Landed ships.

Troop transports, slow cargo vessels. Not fast cutters or patrol ships, anon.

Most of which are damaged or on fire.

And Hiss may not retreat if she's wounded. She can be very petty and vindictive. Giving her a plan to wipe Quedesh from the face of the planet might appeal to her sense of pride without her being wounded.
>>
This post took way too fucking long for what it is. My apologies. I lunched too hard and for too long.

>Stay up, keep breathing fire at her. Don't stop breathing fire at her.
>Let the dragon take over.

You can't trust her words. This is a trick. Everything is a trick. You roar to drown out her speech and bathe her in flame once more. And this time you don't stop. She still has to breathe doesn't she?

This plan is interrupted when she simply leaps out of the flame, sliding to the other side of the courtyard faster than your head can follow.
You drag the flame over to her but she zigzags, hopping in and out without any apparent ill-effect.

"This isn't dignified for either of us. Surely we can come to some kind of agreement?"

Oh no. Don't you dare. She might be able to still get her hooks into what's left of your human brain but what about a dragon? A real dragon? Unless she's hiding some real bullshit, she has no power there.

You close your eyes and surrender to the beast within.

........

You don't remember a whole lot. But you do remember pride. They dragon fights as the dragon wills and no foe is his equal. The dragon is immune to her tricks so in the end it came down to a contest of might. Fire against scales, claw against teeth. Alchemical strength against someone who could have bent the Snakecatcher over her knee and spanked him.

Fire.
Claws.
The scrape of bone on stone.
Blood.
Some of it was yours.
You roar.
Savaging with teeth and claws and flame.
The air whistles through the holes in your wings.
A building breaks around you. You can't remember why.
Neither of you can run, neither of you can back down.
Rocks in the air with you, flying faster than you ever could.
A colossal snake pinned beneath your talons, squirming around your legs with strength enough to snap your bones.
Fire and smoke.
Too much fire and smoke.
At some point you were deafened by a blow to the face. Permanently or temporarily? You can't tell.
A terrible tearing pain across your back.
Blood again.

You breathe fire and hope to engulf her again but she's gotten wise to that trick. You scrabble across the stones of the ruined square. It's slick with dragon blood.
You can't fly. She tore one of your wings off, ripping it out by the very root.

You should switch back. You have to switch back. You'll die like this. But if you change back to human for even a second she'll be on you and as wounded as you are now, you are infinitely more vulnerable as a human.

Shit. What should you have done? What could you have done else? Is there any path to victory you could have taken?
Your heart tells you again and again that there was not, that Tanni is unbeatable. Nothing can be done but to bend the knee and kneel.

You are fairly certain that those thoughts are not your own. There must have been a different way to win. But your legs are broke and your wings are torn and your fire burns helplessly within your belly.
No time for thinking.

A foot plants itself atop one of your outstretched claws, grinding down just hard enough to get your attention.
Tanni? Has she come to finish you off? Not fair! You haven't thought of how to kill her yet!

And then a hand slowly brushes against your muzzle, gentle and soft.

A blood-crusted eyelid slides open and you look up at the figure standing over you.
Red and black and with eyes like lightning.

"Nice fight," Hiss says somewhat helplessly. "Thank you. For everything. I'm so sorry."

You feel Tanni striding closer more than you hear it. Her steps aren't quite as steady as they should be. You don't know why.

"I'm sorry," Hiss repeats as she places herself between you and her. "This should have been me. I should have been here. But that's what you always do, isn't it? You're always here to pick up after my mistakes. You held here for...for me. But why did it have to be you?"

"Ah, just the princess I was looki-"

The concept of snakes gaining experience and knowledge after eating one of their species is fucking great.
>>
>>276272
She had gotten bogged down in fighting various Quedeshi soldiers and other constrictors. She was fine taking her time to reach Tanni because she was a little scared
because she didn't think it would matter if Tanni killed a few more humans or whatever if she slowed down a little. Cut to her seeing that she's fighting Cennen. She feels like shit.
>>
>>276281
She still has to sort through the souls like hiss STILL needs to do for her dad.
>>
>>276283
Well im glad our mutilated broken body gave her the confidence boost she needs
>>
>>276283
Hiss is still scared of Tanni despite being the Queen? Figures.

Did we hurt Tanni at all? How annoyed/put out/surprised at Cennen's actions? Could we have fought her without going full dragontard?
>>
>>276281
I gotta be honest, Hiss would probably abuse this wondrous gift by using it over her brand-telepathy to do mean things to Cennen. Like making him randomly pop a boner at inappropriate times while she's half a mile away.

>>276305
>scared
She's not really scared of Tanni. The fear is there because Tanni directly puts it there, not because she inspires it from something.

As for the rest, yeah, you could have fought her without going full dragon. Could have won though it would have been hard.
>>
>>276334
Is Cennen unable to participate in the rest of the fight? It'd be pretty simple to switch back to human form
>>
>>276339
Hiss probably won't let us, seeing us all fucked up has probably made her a little protective of us, still, what hiss wants is not always what we think is best.
>>
>>276362
Well, that and suddenly she'll have to fight while protecting a human us that quite possibly might not be on her side if Tanni messes with her head.
>>
>>276574
Hiss is easily affected by Tanni's manipulations too. We might need to be there in human form to keep that from happening.
>>
>>277689
Seeing us get our shit fucked up seems to have strengthened her resolve
>>
>>277755
And? Tanni can still affect her. Tanni is just under Snake King tier because of her mindhax. Hiss is till not as strong as her father and lacks us to actually give her the instrumental helping hand.
>>
You nudge him with your boot but there's no response. Even a slightly harder kick doesn't stir him?
Is he dead? No. No. You'd know if he was. But still, seeing him like this...You don't know what to call the feeling. A burning wretched feeling rising from your stomach to your chest, hot and heavy and settling inside you like molten lead.

This is your fault. You held back too long, let yourself get distracted fighting and killing other soldiers, other snakes. And why? Did you just believe that the cost, that whatever lives sacrificed to Tanni while you dawdled would mean nothing?
Of course you had. Since when did lives mean anything to you at all? And now the Creator has thrown this in your face as if to punish you.

This is your fault.

Your name is unspeakable in any human tongue and cannot be transcribed by any mortal alphabet but you are commonly known as the Serpent Queen. Or Hiss. The name once offended you but here and now, you can’t really remember why.

You take a step forward as Tanni approaches. She towers over you but the difference is merely superficial. The same power that she holds, every single Art and more, flood through your body. She has no strength, no magic that you cannot return tenfold. There’s no reason to be afraid.

“What a precious sounding speech,” Tanni laughs. “You sound very grown-up.”

Blood rushes to your head as she attempts to impose her will over you, to dredge up the results of your every other meeting with her. They’d always ended in humiliation or worse. It only takes a sentence for her to summon up shame and helplessness. But things are different now. You’re different now! You’re the fucking Serpent Queen! Doesn’t that mean anything?

“You know Hiss, I worry about you sometimes. I understand your urges and don’t get me wrong, your desire to be some kind of little copy of me, it’s very cute. I’ve always thought of you as a mentally deficient little sister. But this time yo-”

You rush in, slamming your fist against the side of her kneecap. The impact and the sound of scales against scales is like a thunderclap. She doesn’t move and while you can’t see her face from down here, you know exactly what expression she’s wearing. That hideous condescension, the careful implication that she’s more entertained than wary of you. She’s a little embarrassed for you, really. You’re only making a fool out of yourself.

It’s a shame you can’t see it because you wanted to see her reaction to what you did next. You slide around behind her knee, keeping the momentum from your charge and stomp the ground hard enough to crater the stone. The ground beneath her shifts and for just the briefest moment she is off-balance, her feet barely inches above the broken ground. Nothing for her Art to steady herself with.

>>
>>279491
You wrap both arms around her shin and throw her across the square. She smashes into a small two-storey building and keeps going through at least one more before she slides to a halt, flat on her back and half-buried in a giant groove that’s been scooped through the cobblestones.

“In the future, you will address me as Your Majesty.”

I'm thinking she should still be wounded from when we hit her with the Caster when she was still disguised as Tash on the boat. Unless she can heal by shapeshifting.
>>
>You need to press the advantage! Go!
>Leave Cennen where he is.

You don't have time to get Cennen to safety! You need to press your advantage while she's still down! And besides, Cennen might be able to help when he wakes up. You don't feel good asking so much of him but what else can you do?
Sorry, Cennen.

You leap forward, covering the ground between the two of you as best you can. Tanni's got an Art to help you with that and you can feel the ground tear beneath your feet as you surge forward.

She's still stuck! And what's more, is that blood you see? Red is slowly seeping from beneath what little clothes she's wearing. Did you do that? Impossible, you hit her on the leg.
But whatever it is, you're going to take full advantage of it!

You vault into the air with enough force to demolish what little was left of the square beneath you, ready to slam down straight on top of her. That should drive her further into the earth and let you spit as much venom as you like.

There is, however, the somewhat unfortunate matter of scale regarding trying that. But you can feel your Art surge deep within you, you should easily be able to transform mid-air.

>>
>>279692
Technically both since growth fuels strength but yeah, the growth one. The one where you burn souls to get huge. Hiss used it to fight the Serpent King and for an instant to break the defences of the Kuri River.
>>
>No, stay exactly as you are. You don't want your future subjects to think you are TOO alike with these invaders.

No, there's no need for any of that. And while everyone might call you a witch you don't particularly want any more comparisons between you and the Quedeshi.

You slam down onto her chest full-force, doing no damage but hopefully driving her further into the ground as you quickly roll to the side to avoid her swing.
Yes! This is it! There's no doubt that she has more experience than you. And there's certainly no doubting that she can get into your head. But you have more raw power and as long as you can dominate the fight she can't bring any of her advantages to bear. No time to talk, no time for secret body language. Just fist and venom and fang.

You slide off of her and go for the wound. Something's scraped the skin off along her side, you can see the blood. When did that happen?

You spit at it but before your venom can reach her, the wound, and the rest of her body besides, turns to dust.
And from within the cloud, the green serpent springs!

She wraps herself around your ankle before you can hit the ground, her superior mass keeping you up as she curls up your leg and around your arms.

You fall to the ground but you can't get leverage, the immense forty-foot long snake knotting itself around you. What is she trying to do? She can't hurt you!
And then you try to breathe and you realise. It's true that your Dragon Scales prevent her from crushing you. But her tail is wrapped around you tightly enough that in order to breathe, your chest has to push against her. Your strengths are equal but her leverage is far superior and you cannot move her with your chest alone.

Your arms are held, her coils just as strong as you are. Your lungs cannot fill themselves.

She's not the only one who can do that! You let go of your body and let it fall to dust, dropping through her coils in your true form.

Tanni tightens immediately, having counted on you doing exactly this! She'd obviously planned on goading you into your true form so she could constrict that but you're already changing.

Her coils wrap around nothing but empty snakeskin.

Your human body reforms almost exactly as you left it and you slip through her as if she wasn't there, landing both feet solidly on the ground.
She immediately wraps around you once more but this time you're ready. You doubled the size of your breasts when you reformed and with them scaled up, she can't constrict your lungs anywhere nearly as well as she could before.

Which means you still have enough air left in your chest to scream out a Rattle, one borrowed from Tanni's own Art.

She loosens for just a moment, allowing you to step out of her. Must have surprised her, huh? Rattles normally only work on humans but with your Art, even snakes like Tanni are but mere humans to you.

Now, you know that Tanni doesn't possess the Art that lets her heal through shapeshifting. So that wound is still somewhere on her. So you just need to find it and rub your venom all over it. She's not even immune to poison!

There is one problem however. Tanni is currently forty-fucking-feet long. Where's the damn wound?
You start to push your way through her various coils as you search frantically.

>93

You find the ragged spot along the side of her body, running up and along several feet. She'd pushed it to the ground so you wouldn't find it but she couldn't hide it from you!

You wrestle the giant snake up and roll her onto her side while she's still rattled. Her tail whips up and but you ignore it. It doesn't matter if she slams it on you, it won't hurt.

You expose the wound and fill your hand with spit and-

"Stop this nonsense."

The command makes your mouth dry up immediately. You look around to see the top of the serpent having reformed, Tanni's ten-foot tall human torso balancing atop her snake body.

"Your words have no power over me!"

"Then what about him?"

You follow the coils of her long tail with a sudden dread. Her immense body lies across the corner of the ruined square and the very tip of the tail...is wrapped around the wounded dragon's throat.

"Step away from me or I kill Cennen."

>Do as she says.

>Run over to Cennen to free him. Bitch!

For most of the quest, people have assumed Cennen was weak, or to get to Hiss they could go through Cennen. They figured Cennen was Hiss' weakness, and time and time again we (the players) managed to get through shit.

Let's put our faith in him, Cennen isn't Hiss' weakness; He's her most reliable ally, and her strength. Tanni will just have to learn that at the worst possible time.
>>
>>280104
How would Tanni react to us reminding her we still have the Empress inside of us and that Cennen is the only thing keeping her in check?
>>
>>280104
>>280108
This, cennen's put up with enough bullshit.
>>
>Wake Cennen with your brand.
>Trust in Cennen.

You grit your teeth. Is this Tanni's weakness then? She's so used to victory that she's forgotten that she can lose? She's been winning her entire life. She's over-confident and playful when she could be deadly.
And she clearly doesn't know the first thing about Cennen.

CENNEN, YOU IDIOT! GET UP AND HELP ME!

How many times have other foes made this mistake? That Cennen is somehow your weakness? That he was nothing but a weapon that could be used against you?
They all think that he's some kind of hanger-on, a useless consort who's made it all this way in your shadow. But regardless of what you might say to him, you're not about that.

You stay standing exactly where you are, neither disobeying or acquiescing to Tanni's request.

"Move."
The word has power behind it. It makes you want to cringe and cower and retreat in shame. What are you doing? You're such a fool.

You don't move an inch.
"I have faith in Cennen."

When you first saw those black ships upon the horizon, first felt the collapse of your long-held dream...Cennen was the first person you called upon for a reason.

And just like that, the dragon disappears. Cennen, having shrunk down to his human body, rolls out of the way easily.

Not even Tanni can quite control herself.
"What?"

"Didn't know he could reverse that, huh? Sucks to be you."

You grab hold of her and pull her across the square away from Cennen, slamming her upper half through another wall or three in the process.
Her tail whips around and tries to entangle you but you stop her with a single finger prodded into her open wound.
You pry a single foreign scale out of it. Looks like a Scalebreaker.

"Stop! I surrender!"

>>
>"Nah." Spit away.

Yeah, like you're going to fall for that twice? You drag your finger through the wound, digging out more of her scales from the inside out. To her credit, she refrains from showing any kind of pain at all.

"Nah."
You spit right into the wound...which disappears just a moment before it can make contact!

You're left holding a fading dust cloud as Tanni retakes her immense human form and leaps straight for Cennen!

She nearly makes it all the way to him before you catch up to her, muscles straining as Sidewinder Art pushes both of you forward at insane speed.
You kick her out of the way just mere meters from Cennen, the alchemist having only begun to blink in response to Tanni's charge.

The two of you leave the square entirely with the force of the impact, rolling down the road and flattening an entire row of houses that you sure hope nobody was still living in.
It wouldn't do to be seen killing your own subjects!

Tanni tosses you off her and tries to stamp you into the ground but you roll to the side at the last minute, grabbing her by the ankle and bringing her crashing down again!
She tosses half a house at you in response but you just let it break against your head and keep going.

She takes another swing but misses as you use Sidewinder to burst around her. You can use this much easier when you're smaller!
And while she might have centuries of martial experience...so do you. Spread out among countless souls, each one a library of fighting techniques for your unparalleled Soul Arts to leaf through and use at will.
This equalizes your experiences enough to throw one clear fact into plain sight: It's actually really hard to hit someone who's only the height of your knee but is just as fast and strong and skilled as you are!

Tanni figures this out before you do, kicking you away just long enough to emerge from a coiled coffin of empty snakeskin as a 7-foot tall version of herself.

You're on her in just a moment later, punching her in the face. Razor-sharp scales scrape against impenetrable scales and she doesn't budge.

And then she returns the blow, striking you across the temple.

"So here we are, huh," you say, running high on adrenaline despite yourself. "Finally down to my level."

"You don't have a level, you impertinent child! I've worked my entire life for this, I'm not some brat who just has everything handed to her on a silver platter."

Her words attack you with all of her might but you are as a rock upon a mighty shore, the waves crash upon you and are broken and you remain the same.

"Funny. I was going to say the exact! Same! Thing! To you!"
You punctuate each latter word with a furious punch and Tanni...Tanni rises to the bait. Has she really been thrown so far off-guard that she can't see through your head anymore?
Or has all of this finally shifted the balance of power between you?
1/2
>>
>that awful plan didn't happen
thank god. really had me worried there.
>>
>>280480
You've withstood her words and laid them to the side, knocked her from her pedastal and shaken the calm she needs to get into your head. And in return, she's begun to unconsciously follow your lead. To follow and submit to true royalty, the scion of the only bloodline that matters in this fucked up world.
That's real power! Compared to the royal presence of the last Queen of Dragons, all of her tricks are fucking nothing.

She follows your lead, finally giving into her anger and striking you in the gut.

You just laugh and keep hitting her and she grits her teeth and does the same, both of you smashing each other through your surroundings without even trying to defend yourselves.

"Do you even know who I am?"
You stop moving and just hammer away at her and she does the same, the two of standing almost stock-still while still intent on beating the shit out of each other.
"I am the Serpent Queen! I am the daughter of someone who could have killed you by breathing on you! The descendent of the First Dragon, the Million-Man Slayer, the King of Extinction! So I don't give a fuck about what you have to say because my words are the only ones matter!"

And just then, you see your opportunity. As she drives her fist into your face for what feels like the millionth time, she over-extends just a little too much.
You stop attacking, duck down and charge, tackling her and wrapping both of your arms around her wounded side.

"Fuck you. Get out of my country."
You don't just spit in it, you practically bury your face in it. You bite and bite and bite again, enough to envenom her even if she becomes gigantic. Her blood fills your mouth and it is everything you could have ever wanted.

Tanni pales and collapses as you ravage her, driving her to the ground beneath you.

And then a hand alights upon your shoulder. It's Cennen, breathing heavily from having run all the way from the square to here.
Had it really only been a few seconds?

Well either way, she's totally at your mercy now.

Some Time Earlier

You sigh and do your best to close your heart to the sight of the fires and the sounds of screams. What a terrible night! Once you would have wondered what Aashimid had in plan for such atrocities but now you find it hard to think at all.

Once you wouldn't have been here. You would have been out there, doing your best to help.
Not anymore.

Your true name is unpronounceable in any human language and cannot exist in any alphabet but you've taken to calling yourself Aashenpreet. It basically means the same thing as you true name anyway.
Beloved of Aashimid. She who loves Aashimid.

Are either of those things true anymore.

Aash, please. You can't stay here anymore. The soldiers will come. We need to go.

And then there's Zukhdeep. He's in his true form, wrapped around your shoulders as if his frail body could shield you from an uncaring world.

"I guess so," you say dully.
You feel the human souls within you rise up and you drown them out. You can't afford to think of them for now. Their love for one another, once a balm, has turned sour. It is their weapon against you.
You should probably shred them.

You walk outside, taking care to be in your Teln guise. But would it matter if you weren't? If you are rounded up and beaten to death somehow by a mob of locals, wouldn't that just be the most pathetic and thus most fitting end for you imaginable.
It's probably what you deserve. You murderer. You liar. You betrayer of Aashimid. How dare you lose faith?

Let's just leave, Aashenpreet. Go over the walls and leave this city behind. It can be just the two of us. Nobody else. And you'll be safe.

That's certainly tempting. But it isn't what you would have done once.

Why not? Is it the others? You can't trust Cennen, Aashenpreet. He and everyone else only want to hurt you.

I know. But it doesn't feel right!

Deep down, you still hold out hope that one day you'll be able to make things right with Cennen somehow. Even if Zukhdeep is probably right.
I'll just go further away from the beach. Nobody will come up that far.

And with that, you take Zukhdeep up and wander eastwards. The streets are mostly empty and the humans still here won't talk to you. Won't talk to anybody.
You can still hear battle in the distance. This is a city ruled by fear.

You don't know how long you walk, lost in your empty inner thoughts. But you stop when you see a familiar sign. An iron ring, closed and perfect and whole.
Oh, Aashimid. Where was he when you needed him most?

But you can't deny that the Grey Sisters Church offers a little comfort, some vestigial spiritual sustenance. A home of faith even if you've lost yours.

The church is empty. Have all the Sisters fled? You can't blame them. You should probably be doing the same thing.
You walk through the pews and find the altar, kneeling before the metal ring.

A perfect halo, something that feeds on itself and has no need for anything beyond itself. Such perfection can only be Aashimid and he cannot be accurately represented in any other form.

Aashimid and that monster that Hiss became.

You stay by the altar for a time, trapped in half-prayer and desperate contemplation where you do your best not to think at all.
What would your sisters think of you now?
You betrayed your oaths for the shallow promise of adventure and what? It's turned to ashes in your mouth.

Cennen wasn't your friend. He was your torturer.
But it's not his fault! It's yours!

The heavy doors behind you slowly creak open and you duck down immediately, Art shrouding you from view.
A small group of humans enter the church. Looters? Have they finally come for me somehow?

Two men, one large and the other mostly just fat. A woman with a baby. A young girl. They all look tired and ragged and alone.
You can't help but empathise with them.

Don't!, Zukhdeep warns you. You know what happens with you and humans. Chase them out or leave.

His words, though he surely doesn't mean it, strikes guilt into your heart. He's right. You know how you are with humans. You'd probably eat them or kill them or scare them.
Isn't that what all your kind does? You're all monsters.

>>

Bitch and please. Tanni is the scariest individual in this who quest so far. I would rather go another round with the Serpent King than her. Eating/killing her probably feeds into some convoluted plan made by a constrictor even older or more powerful than her, but every second she is alive raises the chance of her doing something that will fuck shit up in ways that are difficult address with what we have available. My only regret is that we weren't able to give fighting her a proper go as Cennen because we went dragontard.
>>
>>281244
Mostly because it was just like when we killed the Snake King.

Yeah Tanni was more dangerous, but that was because of her manipulation which we as players have always been weak to.

The answer to that is soul pruning, as always, but instead we just ate her so good luck ever using her shit to its full potential since Hiss hasn't even been able to go through the snake King's souls.

I guess we could rule for her for a while while she deals with that. Going full dragon + our previous shit should have given us some cred with the snake shits.
>>
>>281831
Yeah it should be fine
The war is about won
If the Quest doesn't after this we should have time to do prep stuff including having Hiss sort through her souls
Maybe we can get some experimenting done before an army of spirits comes and tries to wreck us or something

>Approach them and ask what they are doing here.

You stand up, still unseen via use of your Art as you pace around the altar. They don't look like they're here to take anything or to despoil items of the faith. Surely they are just humans in need of shelter?

No! Stay back.

Sorry, Zukh.

You start towards them and yet they do not react. It takes you a few moments before you remember that your camouflage is still up. Of course. You didn't even notice.
You've become very good at hiding these days.

And yet, just before you unveil yourself, a different thought occurs to you and stays your hand. How would these people react to you? What will they see? A lone girl by herself? Would they mistake you for a looter or a criminal like you did them? Or would one of them even, and you feel sick and impure just thinking about it, take your guise for weakness and attempt to do as they liked?
You would probably have to eat them.

None of the options make you happy. You miss the old days when there would be no disguises, no subterfuge. No countless days of forever hiding what you were. You were all just serpents then.

What are you thinking? The idea of pretending to be a Sister is a tempting one but it's just one more lie atop all the others. Were you hoping for some comfort there? That if you fooled others into believing you to be a woman of faith that you could fool yourself?
Absurd.

You tuck Zukhdeep into your scarf, the little homunculus protesting all the while.
This will never work out, Aashenpreet. You're not safe with anyone.

Hush.

You drop your Art, walking in as if you'd just stepped in from the little room off to the side of the chapel.
"E-Excuse me?"
Your voice falters. Pathetic.
"Who are you?"

They react in a most predictable fashion, stepping back in surprise as they turn about. The man who isn't fat suddenly has a knife in his hand.
"Oh," he says after looking you up and down and he lowers it. You can't imagine you look particularly threatening. You don't even look like a witch either, you've always done your best to dress traditionally.
"Who are you? You scared us half to death there."

"I asked first."

"Fine, fine. No worries. My name is Fedd and this is my brother Thom and my wife Limma. We're from out west and we're just looking for a place to stay safe. Are you a Sister or something?"
He look doubtful, you're clearly not wearing the robes.

"No!"
You said that with a little more force than you intended.

Fedd snorts just a little.
"You must have pretty bad luck."

"The worst. I came here to take sanctuary but when I arrived, I found the Sisters fled."
You do your best to recall the ways of the Sisterhood. Sanctuary is something they provide, isn't it? For a price.

Thom nods.
"We had much the same idea, though we cannot pay. We won't hurt you."

Limma seems hesitant about all of this, drawing her little girl in behind her.
"I don't much like the idea of staying here. Those monsters are surely godless, they'll not respect the sign of the Creator!"

"You don't know that!," you snap, just a moment too quickly.
Aash!
Sorry! I couldn't help myself.

"I mean, all the lands in the world are under A-The Creator's protection. All venerate him."

"Not these," Fedd says. "You haven't seen them, I take it? Monsters and witches."

"Not like our witches," Thom intervenes. "I saw the Queen smacking around some of them like they were paper. We've got good witches. These are something else."

Fed looks wryly amused.
"I remember not that long ago when you were cursing her name. And now you call her Queen?"

"It's different now."

You nearly offer your own opinions on the Hiss matter but you're not really sure what they should be. On one hand, Hiss is an awful, terrible person who does nothing that isn't for her own gain. You hate her.
But on the other hand she is a snake. And even if you've become disillusioned with some facets of your old life, your knowledge of serpent superiority remains. It's just common sense!
Humans need a powerful and long-lived ruler, their lives just aren't long enough to become good leaders themselves. It doesn't matter if they're barbarians or not, leaving them out here trying in vain to rule themselves makes you feel somewhat guilty just thinking about it.

Snakes are monsters but they're the monsters people deserve, the monsters they need for their own well-being!

You decide to turn the conversation away from Hiss before you slip up again.
"You called them monsters and witches? What's going on back there? What are they doing?"

"It's madness down there. They've got giants and soldiers and....and those damned insects! There's no order to it, they're just going where they please and killing everyone they get their hands on!"

"Or eating," Limma remarks darkly, a haunted look in her eyes.

"What? They wouldn'-"
Stop! Please stop talking to them.
"I mean, that's not what should be happening."

"What do you mean?"
Fedd's face furrows, his eyes growing darker.

"Uh..."
Oh no.
"That doesn't make any sense. I-If they were here to conquer us then they would be restrained. They'd have to use this city afterwards, right?"
You still remember your history lessons. You know that your Empire's wars of conquests were always far more peaceful than the battles held between humans. That's why so many humans laid down their arms and joined Quedesh peacefully. They had just known the constrictor way to be superior.

"Are you calling us liars?"

"No! No, just that surely..."

"I saw them kill my mother," Limmy says. "An old biddy like that, she weren't hurting nobody! She wasn't dangerous. One of those giants grabbed her up and..."

Fedd puts his arms around her as the little girl behind his wife begins to wail softly.
"It's alright, Lim. We're safe now."

"They pulled her apart. Grabbed her legs and her arms and they just pulled!"

"Sorry," Thom says as he steps in between you and them. "I know you only meant well. But you weren't there and I'd prefer if you stopped such talk."

"I see," you say faintly.
That doesn't make any sense. This isn't how any of this should be going at all! You mean, of course it was their right to treat barbarians as they wished but-

Again, stop. Don't think these things. Their problems are only yours if you let them be. Leave.

I'm not going to just coil up and pretend I didn't see anything, Zukhdeep!

"I'm sorry," you say. "I knew not what I said."
Do you ever?

Zhukdeep is a horrible, horrible thing. It is literally a little voice that Aash trusts which is content to whisper malcontents to her and keep her warded away from any hope of actual recovery she could ever make which DIDN'T result in dependency on it. It is a self-serving balm which isn't healing wounds so much as taking the opportunity of being the only thing she'll trust or listen to in order to poison her away from making any kind of progress.

It's idea of "protecting" her is the opposite of any sort of positive development she could make, and is serving almost entirely to stifle her growth as a character by trying to dissuade her from going through difficulties or taking risks. At most you could say "oh yes, it wants her to be safe" - And you would be correct, it is trying to protect her. It is doing so by smothering and isolating her from the world at large.

It never should have been created, and the fact it was means that any attempt to get RID of it will just hurt her more. If you look back, you can very clearly see where any attempt to interact with people besides itself was obstructed or treated with disdain, and its entire method of support is literally being a shoulder-tumblr telling her "it's alright, everyone else is just violating your safespace. you're fine, you'll be fine, the world is just mean".

The fact anyone actually approves of this thing baffles me.

A long and awkward silence persists for a time, the broken family still lingering by the entrance while you stand in the aisle between the pews. It's almost as if you are barring their way.
And what right do you have to do that? You broke your vows. They belong here more than you do.

You step aside, motioning towards the altar as you do.
"My apologies once again but you interrupted me from my prayers and I would return to them. You are welcome to join me."

You don't wait for their response before you kneel. What are you even praying for? Your own safety? You're not sure if you care about that anymore. The safety of these humans?
They'd be in less danger if they were far away from you.

Oh, Aashimid! What are you supposed to think of him now? Have you failed him or has he failed you?
You must admit that you haven't always had the best relationship with faith. The idea that the mutant, the cripple and infirm were Aashimid's chosen had always sat badly with you and there were times back when you were just an initiate, before your faith was forged iron-hard in the Labyrinth, that you tended to your more unfortunate sisters and secretly questioned why it had to be like this.
You'd felt it again with Tatterdemalion. Imperfect creations, touched by the hands of a Creator who could have done better.

Were you supposed to be thankful?

And yet, on the other side of things, was it not you who let Aashimid down? Be honest. You never truly forgave. You never truly forgot. And when it came down to the ultimate test of your faith, you failed. You, who found their faith in the Labyrinth! You survived and became stronger where so many Deep Priestesses had grown weak and forsaken their faith in the face of unfortunate truth.

Was what Cennen did to you really worse than that place? No, of course not. It could never be. The problem lies with you. You've gotten weaker.

What do you want from me, Aashimid?

Only I can hear you, Aash.

Do not blaspheme to me here, Zukh.

It is then that you realise that the other humans have joined you in prayer. What do they desire, you wonder?
But...it feels nice. To pray with others of the faith, even of one as warped and barbaric as this, it is a rare opportunity in these times. There is a peace here that the burning city without cannot intrude upon.

"Sorry about going off at you like that," Limmy whispers. "I know you meant well."

What was that expression that's so popular here?
"No worries," you whisper.

In time, the prayer comes to an end and you rise to your feet. That was surprisingly refreshing. And these humans, though you still don't know all their names, you feel somewhat of a bond with them now. Are you not both treading the same path?
So you probably shouldn't lie to them. You should probably warn them about Hiss.

"Look, about the Witch Queen."
noooooooooo
"She's not all you think she is. Why think of her as different now? She hasn't changed. She can't change."

He looks sceptical.
"And that let you know what she's like?"

"About the same as you do. And when she was in Melire, she was very different. She only fights for her own good, nothing more and nothing less."

"So?"

That stops you short.
"Pardon?"

"So what? Look lady, I'm sure you have your reasons but I don't care why she's doing it. Someone has to throw those beasts back and she's the only one doing it!"

"But she does so for selfish reasons."

"Doesn't bother me. Doubt it bothers anyone else. All that is for him," he makes a respectful nod towards the iron ring, "to decide. The only thing that matters to me is that she helped save my family's lives."

"She did."

He nods and you step back a little, suddenly feeling the earth shift beneath your feet. Since when did Hiss do that? She must have done it on purpose, to win people's love.
But doesn't the deed itself matter? And what have you been doing in comparison? Just sitting around and moping while humans died?

When did Hiss become a better person than you?

"Feel free to stay here for as long as you like," you say, somewhat lamely.

This is a mistake.

You do your best to help them get comfortable and over the next hour or so, you help them settle down, provide what little food you could find and help Limmy set the child to an uneasy sleep.

>>284340
Does he know how to brew? I mean homonculi appear to have innate skill but not knowledge. Like being able to throw perfect pitches but not knowing the rules of baseball.
>>
>>284354
Probably not but I think I remember Eva had the ability to identify the possible uses for reagents and brews so he might be able to figure it out. She's a more pure homunculi though so maybe he can't do it as well.
>>
>>284354
I'm just picturing Aash and Zukhdeep trying to fend off a constrictor as they are now and I don't think it would go well. Any brews would help.
>>
>>284087
I really want to know what it is going to do when Aash dies. And she will, long before it expires.

Our Homunculi have an in born sense of self preservation; its not just going to just terminate its self. Instead it will be left in a world lacking in the one thing essential to its wholeness, for a give value of "whole".

They learn and adapt; what it becomes will be a curious thing indeed. Ouro said he will never make something more monstrous or evil than Hiss; that leaves only ourselves to blame for what we created and what it will be 200 years down the line.
>>
>>284365
Chameleon into super strength neck snap
>>
>>284369
I forgot that she has sidewinder now too so she's super fast. Still if a constrictor has scales or dragon scales then we're at a huge disadvantage.
>>
>>284368
Snakes are pretty much immortal though. I don't think our homunculi are. Eva definitely isn't, she made some comment about not having a whole lot of time left once. Probably because she doesn't really have a proper homunculi body, it was human originally.
>>
>>284375
Well yeah hence speed and stealth to pop/break joints in grapples.
>>
>>284383
Aash is probably less experienced with combat than most of the attacking constrictors, still she has a better chance than I originally thought I guess. Does her invisibility work while she's moving or only when she stays still?
>>
>>284381
One more thing to remember. Let's get Eva into a proper body.

Also, I think Hiss just became a lot less evil this thread with us getting fucked up because she dawdled thinking it was okay for humans to get hurt.

I'm >>284354 just on different wi-fi.
>>
>>284388
Best when staying still. Makes a blur when moving. Enough to surprise a guy at least
>>
>>284396
Yeah I was getting that feeling from Hiss' POV too. The thing about giving Eva a proper body is that her soul has been in that body for so long I imagine removing her soul and making another body with soulshape would just remake her current body since she identifies with it now.
>>
>Say nothing. This is fine. This is good

You let go of your guilt as best you can. It doesn't matter if you're hiding something. Who doesn't? Is it not just enough to enjoy the company of the faithful? You didn't even know how much you missed it.

But what he told you about Hiss still sits uneasily with you. Are you really incapable of being as good as her? The lowest bar of all and yet you are unable to step over it.

It's because she's so powerful, Zukhdeep tells you. She can afford to do such things. You cannot. You have to stay safe.
Zukhdeep makes sense. He always does. It's what, deep down, you really want to hear. That it's not your fault.

Your musings are interrupted by a sudden crash, an uproar from across the street.

"What?"
"Did you hear that?"
"Fuck!"
The child wakes and starts to cry immediately.

You rush to the windows perhaps a little faster than a human ought to be able to do, catching yourself by the wall as you gaze out across the street outside.
The humans join you just a second later and you watch their faces change from caution to outright terror.

Thom swears while Fedd looks like he's on the brink of crying.
"Not again..."

Just across the street, currently tearing their way through a small and uninhabited shop is a ten-foot tall Quedeshi man covered in gleaming plate mail. He rips apart the walls of the little shop with one hand and in the other he holds a giant sword.
'Sword' might be too proper of a term. Cleaver, perhaps, a thick and ugly blade that narrows to an edge on one side. It's stained with blood.

You barely have time to process this before he turns and looks almost directly at you, his attention clearly caught by the crying of the little girl.
He frees his blade up and begins to saunter over. The humans don't take this well at all.

"Oh no. No no no."

"We have to go! There's a side-door or a window or anything!"

"No! You think we can get away without him seeing? We have to fight."

"You can't fight them!"

Aashenpreet
Zukhdeep's voice is surprisingly stern, the firmest he's ever been with you.
This isn't your business. Flee while he attacks the other humans.

What?

>Do as Zukhdeep says.

Go out front and try to talk him down. If it fails be prepared to fight. He's not in the homunculi pastebin but Zukhdeep has potence, regen, and a champion brew cooked into him. Maybe he can do some soul bullshit too. And Aash can become invisible with super strength and speed. Since this guy is armored he has no snake arts.

"Stay in the church or run, make up your minds. I'll deal with this."

No!

Sorry, Zukh. I'm just not very good at staying safe.

You can't do this, Aashenpreet. These people mean nothing to you!

Maybe so. But I don't want to be the kind of person to whom innocent lives mean nothing!

This isn't like you, Aash.

Now that stings.
Maybe so. But it's the kind of person I want to be. Sorry again Zukhdeep but you...you never really met the real me. The Aashenpreet who gave a damn and just wanted the best for everyone.

That's not you. You can't save ANYONE. You're a monster who eats people and can't control herself!

You stop.
You know that's not true.

I know who you are Aash.

No, you've only met half of me. Someone without anything to lean on.

And that's the half that I love! And if you must, lean on me! Nobody else can ever give you what I can.

One cannot be righteous for what others give them.

You open the doors and step outside, standing in the middle of the street before the giant. He's...He's really big up close. Is this how humans feel next to you?

Zukhdeep rallies for one final attempt.
This is foolish. We just talked about this! Hiss can do what she does because she is powerful! You're not. If you do this then you'll just die.

Power doesn't matter. Not nearly as much as faith.
You repeat the old canard without thinking, having said something similar to Cennen many times back when times were better. And yet...it doesn't feel hollow anymore.

Zukhdeep falls silent and you stare up at the approaching constrictor defiantly.

He won't take you seriously like this, no matter how strong your faith. It's time to stop living a lie. You can only hope that the humans have already fled through the windows and that they didn't stay to watch. You wouldn't want to betray their trust.

You let your form fall away as you step through the doors, coiling in on yourself and shedding your skin as quickly as you can. You step back into your Quedeshi shape, the human form that Cennen helped give to you so long ago.
And just to be sure, you don't restrain yourself either. The doors of the church barely come up to your chest now and the swordsman is exactly eye-level with you. Zukhdeep is somewhere down by your feet, having slipped out of your grasp after your first body dissolved.

It's about time. You've been getting sick of being small.

The swordsman steps back just a little but he doesn't lower his blade.
"Hail and well met," he calls out cautiously in Quedeshi.

"I wouldn't use those words," you reply in kind. "I beg your apologies warrior but there is nothing for you here. Leave."

He squints and shakes his head.
"There are snakes here too. Some of them can grow to proper sizes."

"Does my native tongue not give me away?"

"You could have eaten a soldier or an Ishmin," he replies. "Show me something no human would know."

>>
>Speak to him of the Seventy-Seven Shrines, of which few humans tread.
> "How dare you defile a holy place to Aashimid? Have you no shame?"

You draw yourself up, noting that you have nearly two inches of height on him now that you're closer.
"There are Seventy Seven Shrines along the path up Chau Devi. The first is in the shape of a great wall surrounding the base of the mountain and is hollowed from within, home to initiates and matrons. It is the Vati. The second is a small temple located roughly ...."

And so it went, with you recounting the names and details of every single shrine, ending with the Compact House itself and the meaning of the Compact. And with every Shrine you name you take a single step forward and as you get within the reach of his sword, you don't hesitate.
Instead he begins to step back as you approach, reeling before your righteous litany. And so by the time you finish extolling the virtues of the Compact, you've walked him all the way down the street. Your throat isn't even sore.

And just as he is about to speak, you cut him off with a finger to the chest.
"And how dare you defile a holy place to Aashimid? Have you no shame?"

He stops, looking confused and sheepish. He can't be any older than you and you doubt what education he has equipped him to deal with this.
"It's a barbarian church."

"Yes and it is inferior. But they still worship Aashimid! They still raised it in his name!"

"It is but a pale shadow of the Shrines."

"Yes and how many of the Shrines have you stepped foot in? Of any mountain in the Chau?"

"...None."

"So how are you worthy to defile even a shadow? Or to even set foot here? Leave."
You step right up to him, your face directly in front of his. You know what kind of snake he is. He's not a member of the Courts, wise and dangerous. He's Hakura, a member of the young detritus class of nobility that lurk in the Court's shadow. The disposable youth.
He should already be used to other constrictors showing him disrespect, abusing him. So hopefully he'll just back down without questioning what you're doing here.

"I could ask you the same question. Aren't you supposed to be fighting?"

"Hrmph, I wish. Escort missions are no fun. That's why I'm wandering about up here now. Just looking for a way to pass the time."

Your confusion over what he's supposed to be escorting is drowned out by what else he said. Fun?
"Is...Is this some kind of game to you?"

"It could be," he says, peering closely at you. Oh no. He's seen your moral indignation and knows it to be weakness.
"What does it matter if a few humans die?"

"It does not," you lie. "But surely there are other ways to pass the time?"
His confidence might be re-surging but at least he's stopped questioning you on your origin.

"...This is just very odd. What if we're attacked?"

"By humans?"
You load the phrase with just the right level of derision and scorn to nettle him into action.

He buries his sword in the street in a huff and sits down, taking out a deck from somewhere within his armour.
He actually had a deck? You weren't really expecting that. You were just trying to throw him off-guard.
"It feels foolish to play against a priestess but I suppose I must."

"I-I must commend you on your preparedness. You've truly come equipped for everything, haven't you?"
As you speak, you try to get back in contact with Zukhdeep.
Stop sulking, we need to talk strategy.

I'll have no part in this!

You play through the first few rounds, beating him easily. He might consider himself quite the expert but you were taught Tash as practically part of holy writ. You even know how to play it without hands!
"So," you say in the beginning of the fourth round. "What are you escorting anyway?"

"I'm surprised you don't know."

Why would you know? As far as he thinks, you're a priest-Oh. He's escorting her.

"That can't be pleasant."

He grunts.
"I was surprised you didn't know. Are you not part of her entourage?"

You roll your eyes dismissively, attempting to put him back into his place.
"Of course I am, that's why I know how terrible it is to be around her. It just feels awful doesn't it? Makes her second head seem normal in comparison."

He nods, his doubts assuaged by your carefree mention of her second head.
"I thought so. You're out here for the same reason I am, aren't you?"

"You doubt my holy purpose?"
You say this with a smile however, giving the impression that he's finally struck the truth. Your bluff was risky but it paid off. Looks like he's normally a part of her entourage, no constrictors should be. So he doesn't actually know all that much about her and her relation with priestesses like you.
It must be nice, to think all priestesses the same.
"I think I'll have to think of a punishment for you. How about we raise the stakes for this final round?"

He narrows his eyes.
"For what? You can't take my sword."

"How about this? If I win, I get the pleasure of your company for another round?"

He leers, taking the bait so well-presented.
"Very forward for one of your kind. But not unappreciated."
He really doesn't know a lot about your order at all, does he? You figured as much when he said he hadn't even set foot on one of the lesser Chau mountains. The other Chau is a common destination for Hakura and for him not to end up there shows a general lack of regard for religion. You doubt he's ever cared so much about the priesthood as he has in this moment.
"And if I win, the two of us have t-"

"No."

"You didn't even know what I was going to say."

"Oh, I could guess. How about this. If you win, which you won't, we trade places for a few hours. You can continue to have your fun and I'll watch over my sister."
Sister? She's anything but! You have little intention of going near the poor, damned soul but...the idea of putting her out of her misery sings to you.

"I like the sound of that."

Excellent. Now all you have to do is throw the game. Doing so is somwhat of a taboo since Tash is about shaping and taking on the fates of others and it has real power where you come from. Deliberately losing a game? You could be throwing your real fate to nothing.
But you don't believe in such things anymore. Or at least you really hope you don't. Tash has no power in this land of barbarians.

You do your best to hide your disgust as you deliberately choose second or third-best strategies and lines of play with every rotation of the round until you throw your cards to the street in despair.
"...When I made that bet, I wasn't planning on losing."

He laughs, retrieving his sword.
"Have fun. I'll say a prayer in your name."

"Don't beseech Aashimid lightly!," you call out as he wanders away. And then, once he is well out of sight, you relax nearly to the point of falling to the ground.

You can't believe that worked! But it was all because you stepped onto the street with faith in your heart and a righteous cause behind you. You're not entirely sure what your faith was in but it paid off! Your heart feels as light as a feather, touched by the gentle fingers of the divine. You haven't felt this good for a long time.
See what I mean, Zukhdeep? There are many ways to be strong

The humans have all fled. One of them cursed your name and they have decided this was all just a betrayal. They hate you all the more now.

You frown and you do your best not to say anything out loud. Of course they fled. That was to be expected. But somehow you had hoped that your clarity of purpose would somehow shine through and that they would understand you.
Didn't I just tell you that one cannot be righteous for the sake of what others give them? And you wanted them gone anyway. Looks like you got your wish, Zukh.

A cursed wish maybe. This isn't what I wanted Aash.

What do you mean

YOU'RE not who I wanted. How you acted just now...it's not the Aashenpreet I know. It's not the Aash I fell in love with.

One cannot be righteous for the sake of love alone either. I'm really sorry. Now, I have to find the Deep Priestess.

What? What for? Why?

...I don't know. I'd like to talk to her at least once. We might have more in common than I thought.

Absurd. This isn't you, Aash. I don't like this.

But it is me! I know you loved that side of me Zukh and...and I know that me being broken made you feel needed. But you can't define who I am. And Cennen can't either. And it's about damn time I stopped letting either of you do that.

You scoop Zukhdeep up and he coils into a little ball. He's not willing to talk any further now and you can respect that. You certainly know how it feels.
Now you just have to find your wayward cousin. If you can feel just a little bit of faith again maybe it's not impossible for her to feel that too.
You were rescued from the Labyrinth once. Perhaps it's time to return the favour.

But alas, such noble intentions couldn't last. You'd barely walked across the street when a sudden crawling feeling erupts beneath your skin! You fall to your knees and you won't stop crying and oh, oh it's too hot. The air is humid and you can feel something warm and pulsating inside your head and-
And the feeling passes, drifting just beyond your perception.

Zukhdeep wakes, his frail little body twitching spasmodically.
You can't stop that! Flee!

Your target is on the move. And moving quite swiftly as well and with no regard to whom she touches with that blasphemy of hers. But why?

You already know why.

Hiss. It always comes down to Hiss. The Priestess was here as a weapon against her and the Serpent Queen must have finally shown herself. And what could even Hiss do against that?
2/3
>>

By the time they feel your cousin's presence, she'll already be upon them.

Zukhdeep intrudes upon your mind once more.
Don't. I can see what you're thinking Aashenpreet and this is just too far! Who cares if Hiss dies? That's good!

It is not for me to judge who can live and who can die. And Hiss will not be alone. There will be other victims.

None of them matter. You're the only person who matters! Aashenpreet, I would give every single person in this whole damned city to that monster if it meant keeping you away from her! Why don't you understand that?

"Excuse me?"

Your name is Cennen and, aside from a few very memorable moments, it always has been. You are an alchemical master, the Soul Alchemist and the consort to the Serpent Queen herself.
Said Queen is still sitting astride Tanni's twitching body, one eyebrow raised from what you just said to her.

She can't take offence, can she? It was obvious, one of the first things you noticed when you woke up. It's particularly obvious now with her sitting hunched over like that.
But why?

"I mean, they have right?"

Hiss is about to say something snide when the world runs sour. You sink to the ground with your hands over your head as you feel that warm diseased slick run straight past you.
Hiss seems to feel it even worse and she topples off Tanni's body entirely.

You know this feeling all too well.
"Get back!"

You get to your feet, patting down your pack as the Deep Priestess slithers around the corner and into the ruined street. She's alone?
And then you make eye contact with the blank black eyes of her second head and the entire world seems to shudder.

Hiss struggles to her feet beside you, staring at her own hands as if she'd never seen them before.

>Tell Hiss to run, you'll hold her off!

“It’s the Priestess!,” you call, your voice strangle muffled in the distorted atmosphere.

“No shit,” Hiss mutters. Her voice still cuts through loud and clear.

“Then you know what it does, let me try to handle it.”

“We’ll do it together!”
Hiss steps forward but you stop her, your hand on her chest. Her magical strength has completely waned and you’re more than strong enough to hold her back now.

“You’ve saved my life a bunch of times today already. Let me take this one.”
It’s here to kill Hiss, it must have a plan to do so. But you’re not going to let it get close to your Queen!

Hiss’ face softens and she grabs your sword from your belt, unsheathing it in the process.
“Then wield my fangs as your own.”
She kisses the hilt of the sword and then, the hideous pulsating presence apparently not bothering her in the slightest, she runs her tongue down the blade. She passes it back to you, slick with deadly venom.

A shivering pain rushes through both your heads as you take it back and you push her out of the way just in time! The Deep Priestess is upon you!

You dodge to the side as one head snaps at you and then do your best not to vomit as the blank-eyed head catches your eye for a moment. Fuck. You’re not meant to be this close. Your body doesn’t want to work properly, twitching and moving slowly and with only a fraction of your strength.
You swing your sword but it misses by bare inches. Fuck! That should have been in your reach!

And that’s when you realize that you’re shrinking. Not by a lot, only a few inches but the implication is exceptionally threatening. Being this close is undoing all of your Treebrews. So what about your other persistent potions? What about the enhancements Eugene gifted you with?
You need to end this quickly!

The monster wraps its tail around you and suddenly everything is upside down, the priestess flicking you into the air. The blank-eyed head rears up, ready to bite into you-

-When an entire carriage (without the horses) comes flying across the street and hits the monster head on, flinging it into a wall. The sickening distortion begins to fade as the Deep Priestess convulses in agony.

“Cennen!”
Aashenpreet rounds the corner, her own body still in the act of shrinking, currently stuck at eight feet tall.

“Where the fuck did you come from?”
You don’t mean to sound ungrateful but really, what the hell?

“Just ki-”

And then you feel something invisible and very cold brush past you. Aashenpreet seems to feel it worse, cutting off her sentence with a choked grasp. It rushes past the two of you and into the ground.

And then the earth begins to shake beneath you.

We have two spiritbane acid brews, two dispel brews, and four snakebreaker flasks which I just remembered can harm spirits. Hopefully there's just one attacking right now.
>>
>Run for the priestess!

Oh no, oh no, you are not going to let this chance get away from you! You recognize the touch of a spirit when you feel one but you don’t have time to protect yourself or anyone else from it. Not when the Deep Priestess is still vulnerable!

You dash forward as the street buckles and heaves, glowing red lights showing through spreading cracks in the ground. Where did this spirit even come from anyway? Did the Quedeshi fleet actually have one? Is it here to protect the abomination? That would make the most sense.

You rush at the two-headed Serpent and close your left eye just in time to avoid looking at the blank head, dodging past the normal head and then, with a swing of your poisoned blade, you lop her abomination-head clean off. It hits the wall with an almost-liquid squish and the serpent rears up, crying like a human child.
The hideous feeling in your head fades as the monster thrashes and then lies still. Hiss’ venom works in a fashion beyond Art and the Deep Priestess was helpless against it.

But you don’t have time to reflect on this because the ground promptly explodes beneath you as the spirit finally takes material form, using the rock and earth of the street to mould a hunched body with a multitude of limbs.
It’s like a hand. A disembodied hand with seven fingers, all hewn from cobblestone and fuzzy clouds of dust. Above it drifts a constellation of blood-red stars in the rough shape of a halo.

That’s a spirit alright. It’s been a while. You wince in pain as it broadcasts directly into your head as spirits do but there are no words here, just a garbled mess. Is it trying to hurt you?

-a'o rd rdkkw-

The spirit pushes past you and you can only watch as it brings down two fingers onto a still-recovering Hiss. The two pillars smash against her scaled body and though Hiss pushes back, she no longer has Tanni to steal strength from and the spirit pushes her further and further into the ground.
Aashenpreet still looks rather stunned by everything. She’s just staring at the spirit.

And since you went for the priestess first, you’re not next to either of them. The spirit’s huge body is blocking the way to help either of them!

>On the back

This has been a bad enough day already, the last thing you need is for some spirit arsehole to come down and try and kidnap Hiss or whatever. You’re really starting to get sick of all this constant bullshit lately. Aashenpreet probably won’t be much help.
But that’s fine. You’ve been preparing for this day for months.

You wait as the spirit lurches forward before grabbing hold of one of its back ‘fingers’, using it as a jumping point to land atop the monster’s back. The halo gleans just above you as you do your best to keep balance, the spirit trying to shake you off while also keeping Hiss pinned. None of its fingers can reach up here, apparently. You grab a Spiritbane from your pack as you keep climbing up the spirits hunched back. It isn’t just rock and dust up here either. There’s a mark, a brand almost, a blood-red hand sunken into the spirit’s back.

Curious but now really isn’t the time for contemplation. Hiss cries out in what could be pain and you smash the bottle right over it, the potion eating through the spirit’s corporeal body like extremely nasty acid. It bucks beneath you and-

>Load the Caster with a Snakebreaker and a Spiritbane

“Understood,” you grunt, ripping your last Spiritbane from your bandoleer and slotting it and a Snakebreaker into the Caster together.

“Hurry up!,” Hiss moans as she crouches over you, the spirit intent on pounding the two of you into the ground. Only her indestructible body is keeping you from death.

-a qpffdc rcdx-

“Now!”
At your signal, Hiss bellows something indecipherable and grabs the next attacking finger. With it in her hands she straightens her back and slowly pushes the spirit back. That gives you just enough time to snap the Caster shut and wind it up.

“Get down and cover your ears!”
A pair of wooden earplugs grow into your own ears as you shout, pointing the Caster at the spirit’s legs.

The resulting shot is devastation, a cone of shrapnel and acid that shreds through the spirit’s lower body, shattering or melting every remaining finger until what’s left of the monster falls helplessly to the ground, it’s halo flaring.

-fdfdfdfdfdfdfdfdfdfdfdfdfdfdfdfdfdfd-

Hiss leaps forward, vaulting over the spirit and landing atop its back. She grabs hold of the flickering halo in both hands and begins to pull, slowly but surely breaking it apart. You watch as the individual stars in her hand flare up and then fade away as she pulls out their links one by one. But it isn’t all one way, Hiss groaning as the breaking halo begins to spark and scorch at her.

-udkmasi oi-

The ground between you and the spirit surges, creating a ramshackle new limb that spears straight at you! And...stops, half a foot away from your face.

Aashenpreet is suddenly between the two of you, holding the spiked pillar back with her bare hands. Blood runs down her arms.
“Suzerain!”

And suddenly everything makes sense. The spirit before you seems to subtly shift, not a hand but a spider. A malformed and rocky spider but one all the same.

“Rock?”

Hiss grunts as she pulls out another star and you hear something break deep inside the spirit. The finger that Aashenpreet is holding back crumbles to loose earth as Rock begins to convulse helplessly.

Interlude 0

Hiss stumbles to her feet, looking somewhat dazed.
"What was that? Is it dead?"

"She was Rock," you say quietly.

"Oh, was it? Good. She was always a bit too sanctimonious for my likaaaagh!"

You follow Hiss's strangled gasp and stare upwards. The stars in the night sky are moving. A ring suspended over the burning city of Taldenral.

"Oh fuck off," Hiss says as she realises what she's looking at.

There's no constellation in all the sky of all the world that is that large. It's a halo. A halo large one to cover the sky.
For a single moment, all voices in Taldenral are stilled as Teln and Quedeshi alike look up to the night sky above them.

And then the sky splits in half as the halo manifests, an imperfect ring that breaks the sky and reveals a whirling ochre chaos beyond. Someone screams but their words are snatched away as the wind reverses, air being pulled into the Gate with the strength of a hurricane.

And then the discordant Dream beyond the rift is marred, a long red hand gripping the rim of the halo. And then another and another and another, a massive thing that looks like nothing more than an ever-increasing number of red hands pushing against the fabric of the sky.

And then they push through, long bloody arms extending behind them and as they pass through the halo they change, hands fading into a myriad of branded spirits all with halos of their own.

Hiss sits down, her hands in the air.
"You know Cennen, if you were holding onto any unique brews of incredibly and never-before-seen power, now would be a great time."
