>OOC: Previously, on Shipgirl Commander >>254149

Relief washes upon you as you exit the Hot Zone, the two blips on the sensors showing no signs of pursuit. Inside, Takao and Houshou are immediately embraced by the fairies, who take them to their straps. Worry scratches at you briefly as you rest your eyes on them, only to see that neither of them are the least bit harmed, although Houshou – despite being fully-clad in her ORB, still – cannot hide her exhaustion – emotional and physical – while Takao could use some drying off. The latter is quickly answered by a blanket, brought to her by the blinking fairies; they wrap her in it snugly, chirping, as you digest the current state of things.

‘Are you both all right?’

‘I don’t think we can complain.’ Takao lets out an amused and fatigued laugh, turning to the CL beside her. ‘Houshou?’

‘I think I need a minute.’ Houshou doesn’t deactivate her ORB just yet, banging the back of her head against the hull of the RAY; Takao lets out a huge breath at this, holding up a pill box and giving it a good look. ‘Is that a sample of the… ?’

Houshou trails off. You find yourself wordless, zooming in on the item in her hand – Takao is holding up to the bulkhead light, frowning she she squints on your feet to get a better look at it.

‘I couldn’t get a sample of the Princess, but I was able to get some of this.’ Takao holds it up to your visual feed to give you a better look. You see some red. ‘It’s… I think it’s what was keeping her from regenerating.’ She bites her lip. ‘I also think it’s what’s keeping her dead.’

‘What is it?’ You ask the both of them, before smacking your head – of course they wouldn’t know – and backtracking. ‘Sorry, I meant if any of you had any idea what it could be… any idea at all.’

‘I’m not sure, b – !’

The fairies come up to the pill box… and immediately glow bright with what could only be described as anger. They point to each other, then to the pill box, then back to each other. You’d seen the fairies argue before, almost comically, but this… there is a genuine debate going on between the bunch of them.

Takao’s mouth opens and closes as she observes the argument, and you yourself don’t say a word.

‘Sir… they’re saying that they made this.’

What?’ You and Houshou say in unison, looking to her.

‘They’re saying that whatever’s in this, it’s… theirs.’ Takao continues breathlessly.

The fairies continue to argue, chirping at each other quickly and loudly.

>>
One of them flies on top of the other, sitting on their head and appearing to proclaim something, only to be tackled by the rest of them. On your lap, the fairy in your cockpit gets into a boxing stance, throwing punches as your feed continues to broadcast the tiny melee. ‘I… I’m sorry, but it doesn’t make sense.’

‘What’re they saying, Takao?’ You beckon for her to continue, although she couldn’t exactly see you. ‘Can you ask the – ?’

‘They’re not saying much, but whatever is in here…’ Takao raises the container – you still can’t see a thing – and holds it closer to Houshou for her to have a look. ‘It apparently has something to do with their Alchemy.’

‘The fairies are saying that they engineered this?’ You blink, confused. Why wouldn’t they have shared it with you – with humanity – if it was indeed capable of doing such a thing as killing a Princess? ‘They have warehouses of this stuff or something? If it can turn the tide – !’

‘I don’t think any of the fairies could do this.’ Houshou takes the container gingerly out of Takao’s hand – you can see it better now; there’s what looks like a small twig of red inside of it… and it pulsed an eerie, dim red. ‘This… it’s just so… bleak.’ She shows it to the fairies, who make disgusted faces and recoil mid-air, getting into a fight again. ‘But… if what you say is right, then… I don’t even know what to make of this.’

‘Takao, can you ask them if they know just what it is?’

‘It’s… apparently it’s a Synthesis Compound… like our gear, but…’ Takao shakes her head, looking to the fairies again, frowning. ‘Whatever this is… it’s apparently not something that any – and by any I mean any and all fairies – would willingly make widespread or with an over-the-counter smile. This is something.’

You frown. As far as you know, Fairy Alchemy had always been used to re-create, upgrade and materialize KanMusu gear. Every KanMusu’s grounding point is able to call upon weaponry that they had been attuned to as a spirits, from memories or otherwise… but for them to actually have weaponry capable of such…

You shake your head, pushing the thoughts away.

‘We’ll take it to the Admiral.’ You say with a finality – it was eking into the wee hours of the morning and you wanted rest, as did probably the whole Squadron. ‘Whatever it is, he’ll probably know what we should do next. No one mention this to anyone until I talk with him.’

‘Keeping secrets from us, sir?’ Houshou questions, a little defensively.

‘No. I just want to know what we’re dealing with here.’

The fairy in your lap does a happy uppercut.

YOKOSUKA BASE OPERATIONS OFFICIAL STATEMENT

1ST OPERATIONS DIVISION

DATED: XX/XX/XX

Reconnaissance of GRID DC-27-BAT was made as per orders. Employed usage of T-65 Oceanic Reconnaissance Battlegear as per optional testing instructions prior to launch. Field test was conducted as secondary objective. Team composition was made of Houshou (CVL), Takao (CA), Tenryuu (CL), Samidare (DD). Houshou served as Squadron Leader for the Operation.

The grid is highly dense of threats. There are at least two Heavy Cruiser Squadrons, a Battleship-led Assault Squadron. The Command Unit within the area is an Oni of unknown designation. Current activities seem to be probing the borders with a probably offensive in the meantime. Suggestion is to shore up extensive defenses in order to protect sovereignty against threat.

T-65 Oceanic Reonnnaissance Battlegear is tested and performed as follow: exceptional stealth capabilities enough to deceive a Ru-Class’s Sensors and Visuals as well as confuse an Oni’s to an extent. Oni was still able to track communications channels via RAY. Tenryuu’s ORB however, malfunctioned sometime through the mission as the cloaking drive apparently overloaded from the scanning of the Oni. Houshou’s ORB reported malfunctions in Drones 02 and 03 in subsequent launch of planes after initial use.

No casualties or significant damage sustained by Squadron.

It’s almost dawn when you see the welcome blip of Yokosuka on the RAY’s sensors. You bring up the docking protocol window, alerting Yuubari to the arrival of the RAY. On your visual you see and pass one of the marker buoys, Yokosuka – and its Admiralty’s – bright lights waiting for your arrival. Almost in a relaxed manner, you pull up some of the visuals, tapping on some of them to give a better view of the makeshift base.

You ease on the throttle as you get closer – you didn’t want to smash in the doors at full stern.

Bright as it is, you don’t see many personnel members around anymore – on the waters, several boats with personnel hail the ones sitting on the dock, presumably back from some sort of maintenance. As you reach the dock, your visuals see them wave at you, holding aloft lanterns – a small sort of Hero’s Welcome.

You have to admit, despite the circumstances, it did feel a lot more satisfying to come back with a – sort of – win.

The bay doors open and you see your black drone cockpit perched on the upper level, the pylons and the cables dropping to bring the RAY in carefully – no sense on making Yuubari angry all over again, either. You carefully bring the RAY towards the lock, turning off the auxiliaries as you do so. The satisfying bump of the craft hooking onto the docks proper, bringing it to a rest. You begin flicking off the systems as the bay doors open, your crew walking out, this time… with triumph.

WELCOME BACK, COMMANDER

You open the cockpit door, the fairy on your lap flying out with you and resting on the railing. You watch as the KanMusu – your Squadron – pile out in varying states of dress to a mess of human personnel and fairies, ushering them towards the chamber to the side of the construct. Despite the questions on your mind, you can’t help but smile as you see all four of them, ruffled but alive and unharmed – although Tenryuu might argue otherwise – onto solid ground. Samidare tumbles onto one of the personnel, who call her out very loudly for being heavier than she looked.

‘This is good, isn’t it?’ A familiar voice sounds next to you; you turn around.

‘Vice-Admiral.’ You tiredly give a salute; the man gives one back and puts a hand on your shoulder, chuckling as your Squadron finally disappears into the chamber below amid the din of activity. ‘Yeah, it does.’ You frown. ‘What’re you doing up so late – so early, I mean?’

‘Admiral’s calling a meeting for all of us.’ He nods, looking out to the closing doors. ‘Said it was urgent… not like I could sleep anyway,’ he chuckles, hands steady on the railings, eyes on the RAY below, ‘not with you guys out there.’

‘Worried I couldn’t cut it this time either?’ You grimace.

He doesn't reply. He does give you a friendly shove, though.

‘Sir, I’d like to see my Squadron first, sir.’ You bring yourself to attention, giving a salute. ‘There’s a few things I’d like to discuss with them before I see the Admiral.’

‘I figured you’d say something like that.’ The Vice-Admiral sighs heavily, dusting himself off as he pushes up from the railing. He frowns for a while, in thought, before sparing his glance to the entrance to the chambers below, where two members of personnel were stationed outside. ‘Take your time, Commander.’

There’s a sinister hint to his voice as he turns around, walking towards the exit, but you pay it no mind. There’s no doubt for you that he merely has his thoughts in the gutter again when it came to you and the your Squadron and you wouldn’t indulge his humor. You give him your thanks, to which he raises a hand, back turned to you, and you make your way down the uneven stairs.

Walking to the double doors, rather carefully, given the slippery nature of the lower floor, you find yourself face-to-face with two MPs. They give you a look – and recognizing your tags, gesture to you to head on inside. The interior is strange – it’s a full cement corridor with an MP at the end – it doesn’t look well lit, nor does it look well-painted. It looks like an ad-hoc job all by itself and not well-maintained at all. The floor is wet and slippery; the walls are lined with crates, cables and the like. Although it is rather large, it’s not very long. Twin fans blow for ventilation but it smells like cigarettes and fish regardless.

Keeping your balance, you walk up to the end of the corridor – it isn’t easy, since there’s water everywhere, and up to the MP seated on a folding chair, reading some sort of book with a middle finger as its cover.

Quickly noticing you, he stands to attention, giving a salute.

‘Sir!’ He salutes stiffly, dropping his book onto the wet floor. It’s about a fifth submerged in a puddle, much to his dismay. ‘Aw, come on, I just got to the good part! Bad luck’s on my name today…’

You drop to your knees, grimacing as you pick it up and hand it back to him.

‘Thanks, sir… buncha good that’ll do, anyway…’ He sighs, looking right at you – you’re about the same height. ‘You here to see your Squadron? Go right ahead.’

He bangs on the door, giving you a look of patience; another MP looks through the small window by the door, and upon seeing you, opens it from the other side. You nod him a thanks and enter, the MP who opened the door, upon a glance back, cursing at the other for apparently ruining the book that the other MP had been reading. From their conversation, it may have very much been his.

You bump into someone as you turn back to the front, seeing several of the personnel, men and women, walking in the opposite direction in a crowd.

TBC
>>
You apologize, and so does he, gathering himself as you shuffle your way through the bunch of them. For a space so large, it seemed rather narrow. On your left and right you notice large cables heading upward – onto the surface, and as the crowd dispersed, you see another door at the end, where three personnel stood, clad in orange hazmat suits, holding what looked like hoses in their hands.

They pay you no heed, picking up small, bright boxes as you make your way to the door, and – !

‘Whoa, whoa, whoa, you can’t go in – !’ One of them, a little shorter than you, comes up, saying in a feminine voice – it was a woman – and putting a hand on your chest, pushing you away from the door.

‘Excuse me?’

‘That’s the Commander, you dolt!’ Another member of the personnel walks up to the both of you, smacking the woman at the back of her head, gesturing to you

‘I know he’s the Commander, you nincompoop!’ The woman smacks the man back, raising a fist at him; he responds by poking her with the hose in his hands and gesturing to the door.

‘Then why’d you stop him, you moron?’ The third one, a little younger with a higher voice – a young man, you reckon – raises his arms at the woman, who raises her hand at him in another threat of violence.

Excuse me.’ You interrupt, a little annoyed. ‘I’d like to see my Squadron, please.’

‘Um… ya sure?’ The youngest-sounding of the three sounds, almost in surprise.

‘Of course he’s sure. He’s the Commander, you ninny!’

‘I know he’s the Commander!’ The third one snaps back, gesturing to you with a raised finger, and then to one of the bright boxes. ‘But he’s wearing pants and shoes, you poopdeck!’

‘Oh, yeah.’ The woman sounds… only to be bopped at the back of the head by the largest of the trio.

She grabs one of the boxes, glaring through the visor and presenting it to you. You cross your arms, unamused.

‘Sir, we’re going to have to confiscate your pants and shoes and anything… you know what, just to be safe, just take it all off and we’ll hose you d – !’

Excuse me?!’ You balk at the request; she doesn’t budge.

‘Things’re sensitive in there.’ The larger man makes a motion with his hands – you frown at him in return. ‘Your clothes might trigger something.’

‘Trigger what?’

‘Stuff.’ He answers almost haughtily, crossing his arms at you. ‘Look, we’re in a rush, sir, and before you pull rank on us, this is very scientific stuff we’re doing. So either get in your birthday suit or you’ll have to wait an hour and half – !’

‘At least.’ The woman chirps, raising a finger, as though inspired.

‘At least an hour and a half until you can see your KanMusu.’

She presents the orange box.

‘I have a meeting, anyway.’ You raise your arms, exasperated, before crisply adding. ‘Good luck with that.’

You turn on your heel back to the other side of the door, where the MP opens the door for you, nodding. Unfortunately, in doing so, he knocked the book his friend had been reading into the puddle once more – the both of them proceeded to break into an argument, to which you left them to, cursing about taking care of the possessions of another and how sometimes things are just not one’s fault but due to the circumstances of the situation. You open the double doors into the dock outside, giving the MPs a casual salute.

You make your way up the uneven stairs, tired and annoyed, and out into the early morning air. Dawn must have been just around the corner, but you couldn’t care less about the time. You make your way past the boxes – they looked newly-placed and haphazardly so – and shimmy past a few, admittedly, rather tired graveyard-shift personnel right into the Command Tent, which was empty save for probably half a dozen people, which included the Admiral and the Vice-Admiral.

‘Commander.’ The Admiral gives you a tired smile; apparently the shift didn’t agree with him either, if the tired rings under his eyes are any indication. ‘Congratulations on your first successful Op.’ He chuckles, raising a hand with a cup – even from this distance, you can tell that it’s fizz. ‘If you want to have a bite, I got a few – Mamiya’s got a new chef; he’s no Gaston, but he can work the dough well enough for something that isn’t gruel.’ He gestures to the table. ‘Have one – on Mamiya.’

You look at the table to see two boxes of what looked like home-made doughnuts, and while they didn’t seem fresh and had a messy look to them, you couldn’t help but be impressed that the Admiral had been able to sneak something that wasn’t gruel over for a midnight – early-morning – snack.

‘Something you did must have put her in a good mood.’ He chuckles, gesturing for you to take one, which you do. ‘She had three batches made as soon as you started your mission. They won’t kill you.’

‘Thanks, sir.’ You take a bite – it’s not gourmet, but you can’t complain. You hadn’t had a thing since you left the MASH in the morning. You take another bite, before getting to the root of the matter. ‘Is this a debriefing about my mission, sir?’

‘I have your recon data.’ The Admiral sets down his cup, grimacing. ‘I’ve sent a communique to the Admiralty about the Oni sighting; I won’t lie to you and say they’ll handle it, but they will keep a closer eye on our borders.’ He sighs, taking a gulp of the fizz. ‘It’s all about they can do.’

The Vice-Admiral takes a sip of his own cup, frowning.

‘What I do want to know is about that little errand I sent you on.’

The Vice-Admiral sets his cup down.

‘You actually did it.’ The Vice-Admiral crosses his arms, leaning against the hologram projector, his lips curling into a smirk. ‘I’m impressed, Commander.’

You nod to the Admiral, motioning towards the apparatus. You didn’t know how it worked, exactly, but you think that using the grid prompt would help your case better. You enlarge it, pointing to the blinking grid.

‘After the completion of Operation Happy Tuesday, my team went dark and off to inspect the sensor quakes that you said occurred, Vice-Admiral; Admiral.’ You bite your lip, feeling your breath grow heavier by the second. ‘What we found, though… I don’t think anyone would’ve suspected.’ ‘I have recordings of it, but I’m not sure if I’m able to push a direct feed to – !’

‘Yuubari will take care of that.’ The Admiral cuts you off, though not rudely. ‘She’s meeting with your team now; she’ll have those recordings on my desk by sunrise – don’t worry about that and just tell us, in your words, to the Vice-Admiral and to me…’ He stiffens, going on, ‘just what you saw.’

You look around, nervous. The Admiral gestures at you to continue, and you do.

‘We found a dead Princess.’ You can hardly believe the words coming from your throat, even after all that. ‘We found a Princess’s corpse. At the bottom of the archipelago in the shallows of those coordinates you set – exactly where the sensor quakes occurred.’

‘All right, where’re the cameras?’ The Vice-Admiral smirks, almost cruelly – there is an ire in his eyes you had never seen before – not even during your scuffle. He bares his fangs, snarling at the both of you. ‘Come on, I know you both are in on this, so I’m not going to – !’

Vice-Admiral.’ The Admiral stares him down; he lets out a shallow breath.

There’s about five minutes of silence. The Vice-Admiral shuffles in his place, seemingly reluctant to believe either of you.

‘There might be some truth to those stories now.’ He concedes tiredly.

‘I don’t think this is her, sir. I really don’t think so.’ You shake your head. ‘Her death’s fresh. There’s no way she’s the one who was in the rumors. You said yourself – that there was a sensor quake, five days back, two days back… and before that the region didn’t have any, right?’

‘Not at all. I wouldn’t have sent you otherwise.’

‘You really saw a dead Princess?’ The Vice-Admiral interjects. ‘At the bottom of the shallows at here?’

He points to the grid.

‘Yes, sir.’

‘How dead was she?’ He looks at you curiously. ‘I mean, how… how much damage was there on the body?’

‘Enough to have her guts spilling out and her face ripped of…’ You make a face at the memory. ‘but… I don’t think any of us pulled it off, sir – not on our side.’

They look at you incredulously.

‘Sir, whoever did this… I don’t think it’s one of our girls.’ You offer, spreading your hands out as if to emphasize your point. You try to recall something that you could use.‘Houshou herself said that killing a Princess, is…’

‘Impossible, given the current circumstances.’ The Vice-Admiral says grimly, as if disgusted by his own admission. ‘I’ve been in three Campaigns to re-direct a Princess. They’ve always resulted in the Princess at least reaching one coast town or village.’ He snarls, but not to either of you – it’s more to himself, you believe. ‘It’s insane to even think about it when it’s a struggle to bring her just back out to sea.’ ‘I can only think of five, maybe six KanMusu that can even keep up with one, and that’s if they got the buzzards off their backs.’ He sighs, crossing his arms and leaning on the apparatus. ‘I’ve seen too many failures to even hope for it.’

‘The fairies think that they might have something to do with it.’ You admit.

The Admiral, who is in the midst of lightning a pipe, drops it onto the table. The Vice-Admiral narrows his eyes in curiosity, biting his lip – he’s deep in thought, just as the Admiral was in surprise. You admit that the theory you just put forward is just as far-fetched as the fact of a dead Princess.

Think?’ The Admiral finally says, turning his gaze to you.

‘It’s anorexic, sir, but… would there be any rogue KanMusu be running around, anywhere?’ It’s a stupid theory, but you try it anyway. ‘Just covering my bases here.’

‘Impossible.’ He declares. ‘Like I said, all KanMusu, MIA, KIA, Active and Retired are all put on register once their summon is complete. A complete record is available on request to the Admiralty. Not to mention the gear – a rogue, if any, wouldn’t be able to pull this off… even with what we have. She’d have no supply chain for those two occurrences.’

‘What about human weaponry?’ The Vice-Admiral offers.

‘We tried that before.’ The Admiral rubs his temples. ‘Not our proudest moment.’

‘You’re saying that you suspected fairy magic is involved in this?’ The Vice-Admiral asks again.

‘Fairy alchemy.’ You correct him, feeling doubt creep yourself. ‘Takao… Takao said that that’s what they said. Apparently the fairies were talking – and they were angry about how… about what it was that killed the Princess.’

‘Think the fairies are holding back on us?’ the Vice-Admiral muses, turning to the Admiral, chuckling mirthlessly.

‘I don’t think that what they have on offer there is anything we’d want in our hand on… they… they were repulsed buy it, really.’ You admit again, remembering the fiery argument amongst your fairy crew.

The two men say nothing, dropping into their thoughts.

‘Repulsed?’

‘Actually… we managed to snag something from the corpse before we left the archipelago.’ You reluctantly answer, a little embarrassed you didn’t put it on the table at the start of the meeting; the Vice-Admiral looks at you with an unamused stare, as does the Admiral. You turn a little red, scratching your cheek at the unspoken insinuation. ‘It’s not much, but… it’s something.’

Something was right about that thing. You don’t even know what to call it.

‘What did you get?’ The Vice-Admiral crosses his arms, looking at your one lone eye.

‘It’s with Takao right now. I’ll tell her to pass it on to you after, but… all I can say about it is that it’s something the fairies don’t like; not one bit.’ You rub your shoulder, feeling every inch uncomfortable. ‘That, and it’s apparently a Synthesized Compound from Fairy Alchemy.’

‘I think we already established that with your hypothesis.’ The Admiral says, a little impatiently. ‘What did you find?’

‘I don’t know.’ You really don’t. ‘It’s… it’s light I think, like, light. It should be goo or some kind of liquid but when Takao scraped it from the wound, it just…’ You let out a sigh, racking your brain to best describe just what Takao had brought back. ‘I can’t describe it. It looks all sorts of wrong, like the Princess. It looks like… it reminds of a corrosive agent, if you know what I’m getting at, but it’s like a crystal or some kind of lightbulb without a bulb and…’ You let out a sigh, finding their pitied gazes upon you. ‘I’m sorry, I just…’ You rub your temples, chuckling. ‘Figures it’d take something all mind-blowing to take down something like that, huh?’

‘That’s the best you can describe it?’ There’s no condescending tone; the Vice-Admiral only wants assurance from you now.

‘It’s light some kind of light that just… ate away at the Princess, Takao and Houshou think it’s what’s keeping her dead, too.’ It hurts just thinking about it. ‘I… I can’t say for sure, sorry.’

You look to the both of them with your one good eye.

‘I’m sorry, sir, but you’ll see what’s there; It’s like she was eaten alive.’

You can feel it, the hear it. She was reaching out for mercy, for life…

‘She suffered.’ You let out, tired. ‘It wasn’t a clean death.’

‘Anything else we got?’

‘Nothing else on my end, sir, sorry.’ You look up. ‘I wish I could be of better use, but… the recordings should explain things better.’

‘All right, kid.’ The Admiral smiles at you. ‘Get some rest. Let the pencil pushers take care of things from here.’

‘Sir.’ You get to your feet and salute.

B: We were mistaken in our understanding that they were one force in the first place (AKA its princess Vs princess Vs Human)
C:Fucking Wesker
D:Shipgirl diseases.
>>
>>273276
>>273213
If its A or B, they were likely remnants of the battle or scouts checking to make sure its dead, or prevent anyone from getting it back up.
If its C, they might be looking for whatever the fuck we just did. and if its D it coulda it could have been the honor guard so to speak

‘I think I’d rather wait for my team, sir.’ You answer finally.

The Admiral raises an eyebrow at you; the Vice-Admiral crosses his arms, smirking and shaking his head. He pulls back a sleeve, revealing a watch and giving it a quick glance, before pressing a button on the apparatus, fully turning it off. The blue lights on the side that indicated power are now nowhere to be seen – around you, you see a few Personnel exiting the Command Tent.

‘They’ll be a while.’ The Admiral puts his hands behind his back, taking a puff of his pipe, before turning back to you, his expression neutral. ‘They’re being treated by Yuubari and the rest of the crew now – by the looks of things none of them are injured too badly, or at all, but detuning them to their gear is going to take a while – especially if it’s the first time. You sure you want to wait that long? Might take more than an hour.’

You don’t budge, giving a nod to the Admiral and the Vice-Admiral, who raises himself with a stretch and a groan, bidding the both of you a good night with a salute, which you return rather tiredly.

‘Good job, Commander.’ The Vice-Admiral says with a respectful salute..

‘Thank you, sir.’ You raise your hand to your salute, nodding in acknowledgment for good measure.

He’s out the partition with a large yawn, probably heading to his own quarters… or for a drink or a fight – you couldn’t tell with the man, sometimes. The Admiral approaches you, giving you a resigned look, shaking his head.

‘I’m not particular, but if you’re so insistent on waiting for them, be my guest. I’ll send personnel to tell them that you’re up here.’ He says, the fatigue of the shift taking its toll on him, too – you almost feel a little sorry for the Admiral for putting up with the hours, but no sooner than you have that thought, he’s back up to stance, giving you a curt nod. ‘Take a power nap or something; dawn’s just around the corner.’ He gives his watch another glance, chuckling. ‘It’s almost 0400.’

‘Thanks, sir.’ You give your best smile and salute, he shakes his head with a small laugh, patting you on the shoulder and walking past you.

‘I’ll be seeing you later when I’ve gone over the recordings.’ He lets out a sigh, nodding at you and ‘Take care of yourself till then, Commander.’

‘Will do, sir.’ You call out, snapping to attention.

‘You can use Nagato’s office to take a nap.’ He stops in his tracks as he approaches the section’s exit, looking thoughtful as he turns to you. ‘I’m sure she won’t mind.’

You take a seat for the first few minutes of his leave, before deciding to heed his advice and wait in Nagato’s office. At least it had a chair.

You enter it, taking Nagato's seat and letting out a groan of relief.

It was strangely... comfortable.

You decide that it wouldn’t do any harm to take a small nap. Especially that now you’re off the pills and that it was almost dawn and that you’re in your Sub-Commander’s office… it somehow felt right. You put your head on the table, yawning as you prop your arms – you wince as your patched eye hits metal and curse for a bit, reaching for a stack of Nagato’s paperwork and propping it against your head to use as a makeshift cushion. It’s hard and not at all comfortable, but you honestly don’t care.

You slowly doze off, snorting the scent of ink. Your team could pick you up later.

Hey.

‘Go away.’ You groan, raising your prosthetic to slap away the annoyance. ‘Tired. Bother me later.’

Hey.

You open an eye to see your sister, pushing against you to wake up. You glare at her, smacking her hand away. She puts her hands on her hips, huffing at you. You ignore her, pulling the blanket over your person. You didn’t have work until 9 o’clock anyway. Your boss would understand – he was the kind that did, at these kind of things, anyway. She calls you out again, roughly shaking at you with her large hands. You look to your sister, and her white hair, dancing in the morning light. She’s a beauty – no wonder guys crawled over glass for her.

Late. Rush.

‘I swear to God, Nee-san, you’re worse than an alarm clock. You don’t have a snooze button.’ You groan, rubbing your eyes. You put your hand on your belly, feeling hungrier than ever before – you don’t even know why, maybe because you’d spent the last night pulling an all-nighter, but… but you’re hungry right now. ‘What did you make for breakfast?’

She tilts her head, almost cutely. She seems glad that you’re finally up. You clutch your head, and she worriedly rushes to you, patting your back.

Lose weight. Fat.

‘You don’t get to say that to me.’ You roll your eyes, getting out of bed. ‘I’m off on my own time; did you… did you make… banana burritos?’

She actually looks bashful at your enthusiasm, but you’re not one to turn down good burritos. You rush out of your room and out onto the, admittedly, rather messy state of yours and your sister’s apartment. You kick a bucket to one side, painfully clutching your foot as you realize that you’d just spilled over a pail of water.

Your blood runs cold as you watch the dirty water spill across the floor, biting your lip. You’d promised her that you’d catch up with your chores when you’d have your work settled; she’d tended to the apartment as best as she could by herself… without you for the last two weeks.

She walks out of your room, dusting herself off and walking past you, nonchalantly picking up the pail and cloth, giving you a look of apology.

Mistake. Will put away.

‘I’m sorry, Nee-san.’ You rub the back of your neck, biting your lip – you only feel guiltier as she bends over to pick up the pail, rubbing your temples and looking away. ‘I know I promised to help you. I’ve just been busy.’ It’s a weak excuse, but it’s the only one you apparently have.

Sister understands. Overtime.

‘Come on, let’s have breakfast.’ You grab her hand, hoping to make amends for your horrible attitude to her; she tries to struggle against your grip, but it’s almost useless against your strength, despite her height advantage. ‘I’m not taking no for an answer.’

Have eaten. Toast.

‘Look, how many times do we have to go over this?’ You snarl, before cursing and taking a more caring tone, a little nervous. ‘You’re my sister. Not my handmaid or whatever you call it. Just… just accept the apology, okay?’ You drag her, but she doesn’t budge. You pull her again. ‘Nee-san?’

She pulls you into a hug, and you scowl at being man-handled at this age. Never mind that she’s twice your size.

Glad. Still fat.

‘I’m not fat.’ You roll your eyes, pushing her away. ‘I just… I just gained a little weight.’

Fat. Diet.

‘You? You’ll fold by day three.’ You smirk at her pout, but she does look more insistent than her previous attempts to be rid of your saggy belly – maybe you’d give her a week this time.

Not.

A loud bang at the door gets your attention.

‘WHO IS IT?’ You call out, a little more annoyed.

Building Management!’ An apologetic voice calls back; you knew the owner – you rub your temples as you make your way to the entrance, shuffling on some slippers. ‘I just need to check on a few things! I said I’d be here last night but I forgot!’

‘COMING!’ You yell out. You mutter. ‘We pay our rent on time. Does she give us the five star service? No, she insists on pulling the B – !’

Rude.

You give your sister a look as you open the door, revealing disheveled raven-haired woman you knew to be the front office worker of the lot. She barges in, without so much as an apology, setting herself on the couch immediately.

And your sister called you rude.

‘Hi, I’m sorry!’ She blitzes her words. ‘I’d just like to take a moment of your time. I’d like to ask you a few questions, if you’re all right with that?’ She’s like a hamster on… something. ‘Is this a bad time?’

‘You’re on my couch.’ You glare at her – she does look apologetic, though. You sit down on the other side, rubbing your temples. ‘Let’s get this over with. What do you need to know?’

Her face is doll-like, cheerful and pale.

Everything.

Your sister puts her hands on your shoulder, giggling. Everyone’s a comedian these days.

No. They are in ours. Remember? Oni fucked with us a bit. Sadly, they are probably probing us for information. Speaking of which, if we play this right we can get some serious info. Lets take our time and think up a plan. Start brainstorming boys.
>>
>>273572
Ok, so it seems like the Ru getting into our head left enough of a residual link to I guess allows her access into our mind. Not sure how Seaport-nee got here, unless she somehow planted herself into our mind when we found her body.
>>
>>273601
Question is how do we play this. Do we want to go full "i see what you are up to" pretend to fall for it, or do we actually try to talk. As in maybe these things can be reasoned with. We are getting the first chance ever (i think, MECH correct me if im wrong here) to talk with an abyssal.

I think we can avoid answering a lot of questions if we used the excuse of we're running behind as Nee-San was telling us when she woke us up. Just don't have the time.

>>

Alright, let's not be openly hostile if we can help it. Be friendly to with our "sis" and "building manager". We should only give out something of no real value, while also saying our time is limited. At the same time, we need to waste time by perhaps asking questions in return (nothing blatant about them being abyssals in our dream).
>>
>>273718
Well, we have a princess on our shoulder. Thats the main target. Right now im pushing for more of a negotiation. Thinking they might believe WE made that shit thats keeping her down. It seems like the rest of us want to play more passive, while i was doing a more aggressive approach. I think theirs is safer, but we could miss out on more info. Lets keep it friendly, but if they start pressing us we should make our move.
>>
>>273737
I'm worried that if we get aggressive they'll hit us with a psychic whammy. Much better to try and play cautiously.

Your sister’s large fingers dig into your shoulder – it’s painful, it keeps you in place. You bite your lip. Had you done something wrong? She’d never been angry with you before; at least never this angry. From the looks of things, the… the Building Manager, she… yes… you… there was a meeting. She’d forgotten to come yesterday and you’d forgotten about it at all after. Unfortunate; expected… but yes, there is something that you had to say. Something she had wanted to see you about.

‘Building manager, I… I’m sorry, but I… um…’ You stutter – she smiles kindly in return; your sister releases her strong grip on your shoulder, easing off; you bite your lip. You had to be direct. ‘I’m sorry to say, but you’re too old for me.’

What.

You rub your temples, feeling something coming on. This wasn’t easy, but… you had to say something. It had to end now. All of it.

‘Look, I know, okay.’ You sigh, putting on the airs, annoyed. She had to know this was bound to happen. ‘You’re the one that’s been stealing my underwear. I… I know you have a fa/tg/uy fetish, but this has to stop.’ You get up from your seat, sending her your best threatening glare. ‘Or I’ll call the police. I mean it.’ You bite the inside of your cheek; she may have been pretty, but she was as old as your mother would have been if she’d lived till today.

Your sister gives you a look. You knew that look. She’d dropped into one of those moods.

‘Nee-san, don’t encourage her!’ You snarl, getting to your feet and pointing a finger into her surprised features. ‘I’ll get a girl on my own time. Now, if you’ll excuse me… I have work.’

Answer. Building Manager.

You feel your ire rising, you rub your arm – it feels rough… almost a little heavy. You give it a roll, glaring at your sister. She glares right back – she’s never glared right back at you before, not since you were kids. You lose your appetite instantly, and… your balance. You fall onto the floor, the dirty water of the pail hitting your knees and your bare feet. Your right eye… hurts. You reach out for help, your building manager and your sister rush to help you to your feet and you…

Push them away.

‘I’m sorry,’ you smile at the both of them, reaching upwards for a hand up, but…

You push them away again.

‘I… I can’t seem to get my balance right, can y – y – you – !’

She reaches down with a helping hand.

You push it away.

‘Nee-san, help me up…’

She reaches down with a worried finger

You shove her into the wall.

You see a corpse, a fallen titan, alien and familiar, horrific and terrible rise from the Abyss, screaming things beyond human comprehension. It holds you in its grasp; it will not be denied.

DOOR.

You remember a name.

It crushes you. Painfully, strongly, it crushes every bone, every organ in you – you cry out, scream, cry as it breaks you. It throws you – above you, thunder and lightning rage and the clouds gather and darken. You scream in agony as her skull-like visage consumes you, ripping you and tearing you into the abyss. You don’t know how long you’re here as the cycle repeats itself. Hours and days pass, the corpse shatters into other creatures, other things – you see yourself, you see you, torn apart and put together again. Over and over, it happens and you… you cry, you weep, you wish for it to end just like that, but…

You hold onto something. There is something that keeps you going. Even as your limbs tear and the corpse and its many limbs and servants tear bone from muscle and limb from body across the realities, you don’t say a word. You only scream – and the screaming doesn’t stop across the aeons of this scape, and you find that you can’t say a word that would… nothing that would…

DOOR.

It’s knocking. Even through the nightmares and the screams, it knocks. It cries out in agony, in release, it wants in and it wants in now. It wants… It wants…

It wants what you will never give.

‘NAGATO!’

You are in your fatigues, your eyepatch on and your arm of Kantai Steel ready. You drop onto the surface of the lagoon pool, the looming titan and its minion are in your sight. The room is bigger, the floor is wider, the ceiling higher. You look up to see the nightmarish face of the Abyssal Princess as you remember it, torn apart, void of a limb, a working jaw and crying out in agony. You feel tired, exhausted, looking it dead in the eye.

‘Honestly, that’s the first name you call out?’

A plane flies past you, as does a shell. You pay it no heed… as it obliterates the bottom torso of the creature. You smirk – and it dies soon after, as the silhouette of the Ru-Class-Kai splashes out of the water and right at you. You glare at it, raising a fist…

And another fist connects alongside yours, shattering it into tiny pieces as Nachi had before.

‘The RAY’s channels must have remained open to attack.’ A deep, feminine voice calls out. ‘But this is amazing, for us to be able to do this…’

‘I cleared his stream… it’d make sense for me to have a back channel.’ An annoyed voice calls out, again, familiar, as they take steps right next to you. ‘I wonder why you have one, Sub-Commander?’

‘Jealous?’

‘Hardly.’ She chuckles, holding a hand next to you. ‘But an imprint on his Stream… this is interesting.’

Nagato and Kaga stand next to you, one crunching her knuckles, fully-loaded and the other drawing back her bow.

‘By your orders, Commander!’ They cry out, ready for battle.

You really can't fight back the grin.

Not at all.

Take ‘em down.’ You command, hand outstretched.

A flurry of planes – ones you’d never seen before, large – about your size, more like hunting falcons – zoom past you, unloading hails of bullets upon the gigantic corpse. It doesn’t faze her one bit – she swipes her arm, as though in annoyance, letting on an inhuman cry as crashes it against the walls of the cavern. You sprint across the water, arms out for balance as she brings her hand down again, this time to you. Your eyes widen as you realize you can’t dodge it in time… only for a deafening explosion to throw her hand back – her rotted jaw would have contorted into an uglier snarl if it could.

You feel yourself lifted from your feet as Nagato effortlessly puts you in her arms, grinning like a maniac. It’s an expression you’d never seen on her before – she looks positively exhilarated at this. She swings her arm left and right, making rocks and pebbles fly in a sweep of the cavern again – Nagato is agile, she’s a lot more nimble than she looks to you, flipping and ducking over the attacks.

You stiffen as she fires off her cannons into the face of her titanic foe, who only cries out in even more anger, bringing her arms underwater and pushing a wave of water towards you. Nagato doesn’t dodge in time – she loses her balance, firing off another shell. She fires another one, hitting the ceiling as another of Kaga’s planes – a sort of ghostly and ethereal manifestation – rams right into the Princess, and she screams in a voice that makes you want to cry out as well.

Then from under the waves, the Ru-Kai that you thought had met its end at your fist comes out, knocking you out of Nagato’s arms and back onto the violent waters. You skid along its surface like an ice rink, rolling for good measure before finding your balance.

Nagato’s grin only grows more psychotic as she locks horns with the returnee, matching her palm for palm in a grapple for dominance. Her face contorts into an ugly snarl as you realize the doll-like face of the Ru-Kai reforms like a mirror piecing itself together.

‘Tough little dickens, aren’t you?’ Nagato’s muscles clench as she pushes right back against the Ru-Kai, crying out with all her might as their hands lock, trying to crush each other’s digits. She manages to throw a glance at you, annoyed. ‘Commander, IF YOU'RE NOT TOO BUSY?!!’

‘Commander, this is your Stream.’ Kaga pulls back her bow – you see the shape of a plane gathering around her, glowing green. ‘We’re only as strong as you believe we are.’

No problem.

‘Nagato!’

Her cannons fire in an ear-shattering roar, tearing the Ru-Kai apart as it drops back into the depths below… only for another to simply come to form, lunging for Nagato again. Behind you, Kaga launches another plane at the Princess, knocking her hand away from pulling another blow.

‘How many of these things are there?!’ Nagato cocks back a blow, catching the new Ru-Kai.

‘The imprint’s spreading faster than I thought.’ Kaga says worriedly, drawing back another arrow and looking at the Princess, who is pushing against the wall, against the ceiling as if clawing for escape. ‘She’s not just knocking on the entrance, she’s ripping the doorknob off!’

‘Is that what this is?!’ You rush into the fray, going toe-to-toe in a defensive melee against the new Ru-Kai

‘You threw out her diplomatic options.’ Kaga chuckles darkly, flying off another one of her planes. ‘Now she just wants IN!’

‘In to what?!’ You look at her incredulously.

‘Your Stream.’ Kaga explains, pulling back another arrow. ‘Once she’s in there, you’ll be – !’

She doesn’t have a chance to finish as the Princess’s hands shoots right for her, pressing her against the wall. Your blood runs cold as you don’t see Kaga at all – she’d been completely covered… crushed – no – not in here, not on you. This wouldn’t – !

‘KAGA!’ You call out as the Princess reaches back quickly, busying itself with Nagato’s assault for now.

‘I’m fine.’ Kaga falls onto her knees, clutching herself. She is most certainly not fine – you move to help her, but pushes you away, getting to her feet, though barely. She’s quaking – in your head or not, that sort of attack would have obliterated anyone, but Kaga cricks her neck, throwing out a grimace. ‘She’s tough. Incredible – this level of… a Princess, huh?’

Another blow catches Nagato, who rolls across the water right back at you. You move to catch her – she’s surprisingly light, even with all her gear and rigging – and hold her. Compared to Kaga, she most definitely looks the more fatigued and exhausted. Both sides size the other – the Princess and what were now three Ru-Kais loom over the three of you from one side of the chamber. You hold Nagato’s tired form in your arms as she approaches you.

You don’t think there are many things more frightening than the titan before you.

OPEN. DOOR.

Kaga shakily draws her bow, glaring right at her.

‘If she gets past your door, that’s the end of it for you, for us… for every single one of the KanMusu that you’ve been into the Stream with. The Stream is more than just a ways for the KanMusu to link with you through battle, it’s our very beings connected. Once she’s inside… she’s not getting out. She’ll have a link to all of them. Houshou, Takao, Tenryuu… everyone.’ She looks dead serious – and dead worried ‘We’ll all just be an extension to her will.’

She morphs her face into a defiant snarl, aiming right at the Princess's head.

'Abyssal puppets.'

No pressure. No pressure at all.

‘And all of you were planning on telling me this when?!’ You know it’s not the time, but you’re too annoyed to even bother with the details like that – things like having your mind and soul turned into a chowder buffet for a demonic entity from the depths of the sea weren’t things you hid from the ones helping you fight them.

‘Stream invasion has only ever been attempted in instances to interrogate or sever its flow.’ Nagato pushes herself off you, readying her guns as she prepares for another round of battle – tired she may have been, but her enthusiasm is palpable. ‘This is the first time a Princess has ever used one to take over a whole Division.’

‘Granted, they’re not this powerful, usually… but…’ Kaga grimaces as she steadies her bow; none of them make the first move. They’re all sizing each other up, waiting for the other to dare. ‘But she’s…’

‘She’s desperate,’ Nagato grimaces herself, sharing a look with the Carrier. ‘which is worse.’

‘If she gets into a stream, she’ll have access to everything we have – what we know, we can do…’ Kaga’s hands shake as she grits her teeth, aiming right for the exposed skull of the Princess.

Everything.

‘Kaga,’ you look at your Carrier, who gives you a glance of confusion; you push on anyway, ‘are all Stream connections from you girls to me unique to the link?’

‘Yes,’ She says, almost impatiently, ‘but right now we have to beat her back – that’s not going to help one bit. If she gets in the Stream at all, past your Door…’

‘It’d be rude not to answer someone pressing the bell.’

The cavern vanishes in a whirl of color and shapes. The three of you drop into a raging ocean – a dark ocean where the waves are vile and the air is dead; the winds are hungry and the clouds are black ; thick. You don’t stand on the water here – the waves completely consume the three of you for a while until you calm yourself enough to get out and stand on the water, bringing your hands out to Kaga and Nagato, pulling them out.

‘Commander, this is…’ Nagato looks around, her expression one of horror and… wonder.

‘This is our Stream.’

‘We’re in.’ She looks around, clutching her chest. ‘It’s too la – !’

The Princess raises itself from the depths, whole and healed. There are no gashes, no mar to its bodice. It is fully-formed, beautiful, terrible and wrong. A storm rages all around you as red lightning rakes and the winds pick up. You feel it eating at you, taking you piece by piece.

You spread your arms to embrace it all, not looking away.

‘COMMANDER!’

‘Kaga,’ You say calmly. ‘Remember.’

A young lady stands on the dark ocean, shorter than any of you, shrouded in darkness.

‘The more scared you get… the scarier this place becomes.’

Everything stops for a moment. The eating, the spread… it all stops. Kaga is on all fours, frightened as can be, clutching onto Nagato. You’d apologize to her later, but right now… right now you knew this was what you needed to do. You take a step forward as the Princess looks around in confusion; the storm begins to rage and the red lightning brightens the place up like some sort of water body from the pits of Hell itself.

Darker clouds spread, if possible, the Princess right in the center of it all, but she feels something amiss, something that shouldn’t be here or shouldn’t be happening. You feel a kind of compelling draw to her being, that she wouldn’t be denied, that she shouldn’t be at all resisted but worshiped and loved like the Goddess she is, but you don’t. It’s strong and it’s there, but you pay it no heed – not at all.

Above you, the thunder crackles, around you, the sea calms into the low tide. She puts both her hands on the water, leaning her massive frame – bigger than it had been in the cavern, larger than it had been at the bottom of the shallows… smiling in a manner that is most definitely inhuman and unfathomable by a glance.

‘I can’t give you everything.’ You say solemnly, hands in your pockets. ‘But it’d be rude not to give a departing guest something.’

A scream echoes throughout the sea. Behind you, you feel Kaga cowering in Nagato’s arms. She doesn’t raise herself to look, frightened… afraid. The giant Abyssal looks around, confused by the now-dead winds and the thicker clouds. You look to see that young lady you had seen before, her eyes dead and her form rotting, walking towards the Abyssal, her expression blank.

No, you had never seen her before. Kaga had seen her. Hundreds upon hundreds of times.

A hand raises from the depths. Then another. Dozens. Hundreds. Rotting flesh and the scent of the ocean rises up with them, crawling out as though it is the very earth, struggling to find their balance, their place… as it was before, they make their way past you… and past Kaga, past Nagato, who is as frightened as Kaga right now, watching the bodies of wasted men from a time and world long lost…

As they feast upon their meal.

She is torn bit by bit. She struggles against the tide of the dead, the cries of hunger and retribution, of hopes lost and never found again. Of the desires never met, the calls never answered. They feast on her. Teeth tears her flesh from the bone like nothing – They rip at her breast and face until she resembles nothing more than a living, writhing meal for the legions of the unfulfilled.

They rip her fingers, her eye, her meat piece by piece, dragging her into the depths.

She reaches out for you, screaming, screaming

You don't look away.

‘Kaga, Nagato, finish it.’ You command; there is no sense in drawing this out any longer – you weren’t cruel enough to let it end like this – the least you could give her was this mercy.

She struggles against the hold – there are no screams anymore, there is now throat to let it out. The dead crawl along her like bees their hive, consuming her; you wonder if this was how she met her end in life. It is a sad end, but a necessary one – only either one of you could remain, after all.

Sir.’ Your two KanMusu walk past you, training their weapons to the only thing left of her… her head.

A flash of light blinds you, and you find yourself looking at a flurry of shapes and busying themselves above you. Your only good eye blinks as you fight back a Hell of a headache; your hearing returns and so does the feeling of pain on your shoulder and back – it felt like someone had taken a sledgehammer there. You re-focus to see… Hiei of the Four Horsemen, looking back at you in relief. The dark canvas on the ceiling says that you’re underneath a tent. Your mechanical limb flexes as you try to raise yourself, but you find that your hands by your side are otherwise occupied.

Nagato is grasping onto your right arm like a pillow, unconscious… and Kaga is on your left, opening her eyes slowly, clasping your hand in both of hers. She is haggard with circles under her eyes, but she’s otherwise fine. Nagato, on your right, groans as she begins to stir.

Around you, you take in your surroundings to find the Admiral, Vice-Admiral and most of your Division present, looking at you with worried eyes.

‘Welcome back to the world of the living.’ The Admiral offers a hand with an apologetic smile; you try to raise a hand to shake it, but neither of the KanMusu seem keen on letting go. ‘Thought you were a goner, kid.’

‘Thank goodness.’ You see Houshou, dropping to her knees in relief, hand on her chest.

‘I… I’m not sure what…’ You groan; your left hand is free of Kaga’s hold – you immediately raise it to your nose, feeling a trickle of blood flow down – it had been bleeding. ‘Um…’

‘You are one lucky son of a bitch.’ The Vice-Admiral approaches, taking out a handkerchief from his pocket and handing it to you – you immediately bring it to your face, wiping the crimson away; your right eye pulses and your left stings as you take in all around you. ‘If they didn’t pull you out I would’ve put a knife between your eyes.’

You wave him away, finding your throat dryer than usual.

‘How long was I out?’ You look around to see some of the other KanMusu – not just your own – regard you with puzzled, curious looks. ‘Fifteen minutes?’

‘Three hours.’ The Vice-Admiral smiles. ‘It’s almost 0700.’

For some reason, you don’t find yourself the least bit surprised.

‘You have to thank Hiei.’ He smirks, indicating his Sub-Commander. ‘She found you.’

You look around you to realize you’re on the floor of the Command Post – the cables and wires entering your immediate field of view say that you’d been removed from your previous napping spot at Nagato’s table. You’re seated on the floor, your back aching – no wonder, of course. Your Vice-Admiral’s words reach you again and you look up to the second of the Four Horsemen.

‘Hiei? Thank y – !’ You raise a hand to your head, wincing as you glance at the smug, but somehow relieved look on Hiei’s features. ‘How – ?’

Hiei puts her hands on her hips, scowling and pointing a finger right in your face like a scolding mother. Some of the other girls giggle as she does so, but only a few. Her expression says she is in no mood for niceties and only answer; she doesn’t look angry at all, but she does look like she wants things quick and to the point.

‘You got a lot of business asking me how?’ She says, very much annoyed. ‘How the Hell did you get an imprint traced into your Stream like that?! I’d never seen something that – !’

‘That Princess we found… she must have…’ Houshou approaches you, her expression neutral.

‘Houshou?’ You look up to see your CVL biting her lip, very much in thought.

‘I think physically, she must have been dead, but…’ She’s in sheer disbelief at what she’s saying, as though it’s the most nonsensical thing to throw out there, but she speaks anyway, looking to you, then to Hiei and your Commanding Officers. ‘I think her consciousness had some kind of…’

‘Wait, hold up!’ Hiei raises her hands – she’s definitely angry now if she hadn’t been before. ‘Just what the Hell are you talking about?’

The Vice-Admiral steps up, putting a hand on Hiei’s shoulder and pulling her away from you. She seems rather reluctant at his hold, she complies, giving you a look to collect yourself.

‘Hiei… I’ll explain everything to you and the rest of the Forces later.’ The Vice-Admiral says seriously, motioning for you to go on. ‘Right now, though…’

‘Thank you.’ You say; at least that’s one thing that’s right off your chest – you do mean it, though.

Hiei looks a little flustered. She mumbles something under her breath for a good few seconds before putting her hands at her side and regarding you with a look of apology.

‘Never seen one that strong,’ She grumbles, crossing her arms and looking at the ceiling, continuing loudly, ‘or noticeable. Subtlety isn’t its crack, I tell you.’

‘We found a Princess.’ There are mumbles all around – the whole section breaks into a huge din as you observe; you look to the ground, grunting as you force yourself up. ‘I think she put that imprint on me when I...'

The mumbling doesn’t die off – the discussion grows even more heated. Kaga and Nagato regard you with more worry than you feel deserving of, using the apparatus to steady yourself to a stand.

The crowd talks among itself – a variety of tones, worries and such are heard over the din. The KanMusu talk with each other as though they are the ones that had gone through your ordeal. The buzz from the group talk hurts your ears a bit. You find to your annoyance that you’re a little more sensitive there, at least. You rub your temples again, finding your eyepatch a little uncomfortable. Nagato and Kaga look at you worriedly, but you smile back in reassurance. It didn’t fool them one bit, you reckon.

‘Quiet, everyone.’ The Admiral calls for calm – with a swift motion of his hand, the noise is killed.

You find the attention on you again; you look up, struggling to finish off what you have to say.

‘She’s… she’s gone now, I think.’ You really can’t go on – you’re a little exhausted from the ordeal right now; so much for the lack of fatigue from before.

‘Most definitely gone.’ Kaga assures you, crossing her arms – she nods, almost grimly. ‘A memory forgotten is all she is now. We expunged her fully.’

There’s whispers among the crowd. You see Takao and Houshou looking at you worriedly… before breaking away from the group and joining Nagato and Kaga at your side. Takao looks restrained; Houshou, however, looked guilty. You frown – for what? It hadn’t been her fault.

‘What happened to you was my fault, Commander.’ The Admiral sighs, looking at you solemnly. ‘I should have known the old comm shielding wouldn’t have been adequate – even if this was out of any calculations I would have had. It was my negligence that brought you into this situation.’ He offers an apologetic smile, looking to the two KanMusu by your side. ‘We would have lost a lot more if it weren’t for your two girls here.’

Nagato gets to her feet, her fists clenched. You worry for a moment if she would start something, but the Admiral catches her gaze neutrally.

Admiral.’

‘Okay, Nagato, okay.’ He sighs – you almost find a fatherly quality to his voice as he chuckles, smiling kindly at you then back to Nagato, who seems to be waiting expectantly for something from him.‘I’ll admit it.’

He pats her on the shoulder.

‘You chose a good man.’ He nods at her, before turning the crowd.

With that, the Admiral is back.

‘Vice-Admiral, I want you to gather all the Forces for an emergency meeting at the temporary supply depot at 1300 hours.’ The Vice-Admiral salutes, leaving with some of the other KanMusu, who give you a curious glance as they leave with him. ‘You know where that is, Commander?’

‘Teitan High, isn’t it?’ You recall.

He nods at you.

‘If you want to get some breakfast, Mamiya’s kitchen should be up by now.’ You nod. ‘Or I can arrange for you to go back to the barracks by buggy if you wish.’

v‘I think I’ll take up that buggy.’ You get up from your seat – your knee is still stiff even with all that. The Admiral nods, walking with the rest of the group outside. ‘Wait, where are Samidare and – ?’

‘Tenryuu and Samidare were sent to the barracks immediately after they were de-briefed.’ Houshou immediately cuts you off, frowning – there’s a motherly aura about her right now, but you ignore it. Right now you just want another power nap – one that preferably did not involve the invasion of an eldritch humanoid Hell-bent on making you her flesh puppet. ‘They’re probably sleeping in right now.’

‘Wait. Kaga… Nagato… how did the both of you – ?’

That was a question worth answering. How in the world did Kaga and Nagato know about your condition so quickly? It was a little strange to have them conveniently near enough for you to be pulled out straight away – the Barracks were at least half an hour away by walk.

‘I felt a disturbance in the Stream.’ Kaga explained – you get up proper, making your way to the exit alongside your four Division members – it’s a little claustrophobic with them hanging off you like this, but you find that you don’t mind as much as you probably would otherwise. It was nice to have people worrying over you like this, really – once in a while. ‘There is… it’s hard to describe, but… when I opened that back channel to stabilize you – not the time, Takao – as a Carrier, I’m more sensitive to any changes in our Stream.’

‘Nachi and I caught her sneaking out.’ Nagato explains her side. ‘She said she wanted to see you… and that’s when we ran into Hiei – she told us something had happened to you.’ Nagato looks away, biting her lip. ‘We

‘It’s annoying and far fetched, but she suggested there was a sort of mental leech on you, killing you.’

It hadn’t felt that way at all. In fact, it was a strange sensation to recall what had happened. You most certainly did not live alone with your sister in an inland town, you definitely never owned an apartment alone – it was too expensive – and yet in there… it just seemed so familiar and comfortable. You had felt like you had been written into a script of your liking, of your choosing… and didn’t want to live.

The horrors that came after were a testament to the power of illusion.

‘She was half-right.’ Kaga mumbles, motioning for you and the rest to move past the flaps; you thank her. ‘I was skeptical – I thought it was just an Abyssal attack until I…’

‘How in the world did you get a Princess’s Imprint into the Stream?’ Nagato asks seriously as the both of you walk towards the pick-up point. You see the Admiral there, talking with someone. ‘Never mind that? How did you get away from a Princess? I thought you were doing weaponless recon?’

You take Nagato’s hand and drag her into an empty nearby tent. The others follow you inside, a little confused. You couldn’t hide things for Nagato… not after the last fiasco and after the fire she and Kaga just pulled you out of. You let out a sigh… and begin.

‘We found her corpse at some coordinates the Admiral gave us.’ You explain. ‘I don’t think she was fully dead… or a hundred percent dead – I think she was waiting for someone to find her that she could leech, like Hiei said.’

‘A corpse?’ Nagato’s raises an eyebrow, disbelieving. ‘A Princess’s corpse?’

‘I don’t think it’s a corpse anymore, personally.’ You hurriedly correct.

‘That body is beyond repair,’ Houshou elaborates, ‘she’s most definitely dead. Whatever latched on to you was an echo.’ She bites her lip. ‘A… psychic remnant if you will – that caused the imprint in the first place.’ ‘But for her to be able to have it linger like that…’

‘If there’s any of tricks that the Abyssals could pull on us, I'd - !.’ Nagato frowns, cutting herself off. ‘But a Princess’s corpse? I don’t…’ She brings a hand to her head, biting the inside of her cheek. ‘Where?’

‘The one where the Admiral had a hunch something was going on – the site of the sensor quakes.’

Nagato looks confused for a moment – she composes herself, taking a deep breath.

With a nod and a half-smile, she believes you.

‘Sensor quakes are an alert for a particular large force invading the area – they usually only occur when the size of the invasion is more than for a single base to handle. And to my knowledge, they never occur on our particular grid more than once unless the force is building up a defensive line – the Princess… what type was she?’ Kaga looks thoughtful.

‘Sorry?’ You blink.

‘What type of Princess was she?’ Nagato asks. ‘Mobile or Installation?’

'Pardon?'

‘Installation-Type Princesses and Onis are the ones that have potentially the higher damage – they’re slow, big and don’t have particular armaments or fighting skills, but they have an army – usually enough to wipe out a base when they go ACTIVE – they’re dangerous enough on their own but typically act… well, kind of like you, sir. They’re more Command Units than frontline soldiers.’

‘What about Mobile types?’ You frown – you got most of that – Mostly.

‘Mobile-Type Princesses and Onis are typically lone guns. They’re faster, more battle-hardened and considered dangerous enough on their own – think of them as the enemy aces in contrast to the Installation-Types. They don’t follow in formation or have a supporting squadron, but they don’t need one. They pack enough damage on their own – they’re usually the smaller ones and have a smaller minion count compared to the rest. They’re the type you usually find ACTIVE.’

‘I think she was… an Installation-Type.’ You try to recall proper – you had a good look, but you couldn’t be totally sure of what she was, really. ‘She was big – couldn’t have been a Mobile Type.’

‘Heavy gear; damaged but looked bulky enough.’ Takao looks troubled, bringing her own two cents. ‘I can’t say for sure about the size, but she was at least 25 feet tall. I’ll go with Installation, too. The gear looked like it enough for her to be classed as one.’

‘We didn’t see any others around – buzzards or any other dead minions.’ You frown as Houshou looks thoughtful, worriedly looking to Nagato. ‘There could be a possibility that she was a Mobile Type.’

You rub your temples. You’re tired and a little annoyed at this point.

‘What’s the significance – Princesses are Princesses, right? Why would you want to put sub-types to them?’

Nagato regards you neutrally.

‘An Installation Type showing up usually means that the Abyssals are adamant about getting that piece of the ocean.’ She adds grimly. ‘Very adamant.’

You raise an eyebrow.

‘A Mobile-Type going ACTIVE means an Abyssal is just making an offensive maneuver. An Installation -Type means that they’ve made their claim.’ Takao offers, biting her lip and looking at you, then back to Nagato. ‘Both are bad, but…’

The four of them adopt a thoughtful demeanor, thinking deeply. Despite your best efforts, you find yourself well and truly lost in the whole manner. As far as you were concerned, they’d brought you in to fill the gaps and kill Abyssals… not figure out who was what; one chewed your arm into uselessness and that meant that it was off with the rest of them, really.

‘Thanks for telling us Commander.’ Kaga gives you a soft smile.

You find your heart melting slightly, but not your fatigue. Besides, there’d be a

‘We’re not going to get any further discussing things here.’ You raise your hands, getting their attention. ‘At the meeting the Admiral’s going to brief all of us on our next step.’ You’re a little exasperated yourself. ‘We can decide what we’re going to do after – we won’t be able to decide things here. And…’

You let out a heavy sigh.

‘I think I need my nap.’

The four of them offer you apologetic smiles and head out to the stop, where a middle-aged man, about the size of you in both gut and height, smoking a cigarette. He regards all of you with a tired gaze of his own, putting his smoke down.

‘Commander.’ He nods at you. ‘Admiral said you needed a lift?’

You reply a positive, making your way to the front seat as the girls shared the back. The man isn’t talkative, and neither are you – it’s not even your third thought when you reach the compound entrance, quiet and still. With a word of thanks you’re out, walk towards the door and…

You rub your temples, struggling with the door. You’re not in the mood for this – not at all. You turn it left and right – either way, it doesn’t budge. You push it and pull it, probably making enough of a ruckus to wake up a tenant if this had been an apartment building. You force yourself to it, left and right, up and down, yet it still doesn’t budge – not an inch, not a millimeter. You contort your features into a scowl as you apply more force to the knob: nothing.

Commander.’ Nagato’s tired voice comes; you pay her no heed.

‘Come on.’ You growl, rattling the doorknob and putting your foot against the frame for a strong pull – never mind that it was a push door; it’s the principle of the thing.

Commander…’ comes Kaga’s exasperated groan.

You hold up a hand, backing up about fifteen feet – maybe eighteen, but who was counting, really. All of them look at you quizzically and you give them a thumbs up; to which they look at each other in even more confusion. With full force and speed you run towards the door, roaring your battlecry of choice for the night.

You cock the wrong shoulder, dropping onto the mat groaning as you rub your sore left.

‘I have no idea why I did that.’ You cry out pathetically as four worried gazes come into view.

Each of them brings out a key on a chain, jiggling them in a unified jangle.

‘Right. You guys have the keys.’ You groan, wishing for the ground to just swallow you up and just die. ‘Why don’t I have one again?’

‘I left a tray for collection on the counter.’ Nagato answers flatly.

‘Never checked it.’

‘Come on.’ Takao reaches down, pulling you over her shoulder. ‘Easy, Commander.’

You groan and wince from your shoulder cocking back into place – behind you, Houshou chuckles almost a little tool loudly as Kaga puts her key to use, opening the door to the barracks. Takao gingerly brings you inside, your nose inhales the scent of sterilization – you find you don’t like it at all. You wish that she’d smell like lavender and gunsmoke again; you like it better. You look over your shoulder to Houshou – a thought hits you but you shake it off, labeling it as insane – and turn back forward.

‘I think I’m getting delirious.’ You grimace. ‘Either that or it’s just the sleep deprivation or that Princess did a lot more damage that we thought.’

‘Why’s that?’ Nagato turns to you as you make it to the stairs.

‘I’m actually entertaining ideas of burying myself deep in Houshou’s ass, for one.’ You sigh.

‘COMMANDER!’ Takao drops you onto the floor from the shock – or rather, right onto the first wooden stairs – you realize that it’s not Takao or Houshou that cries out, but Nagato, who is red as beet.

‘Couch or upstairs?’ Takao picks you back up, mouthing an apology.

Upstairs.’ You gain a little more of your bearings. The clocks show that 0700 is just around the corner – new clocks; you didn’t notice at all since you got back; you take yourself off Takao – at least, you take most of you – and put your hand on the railing, regaining a little more; the KanMusu don’t hang on to you any more, which you’re thankful for – they could be sweet, but you’re a little too badly-strung to appreciate them as well as you could. ‘I’d really like a nice soft bed.’

You make your way to the top of the stairs with little to no effort, but you are still very much tired. Whoever knocked you some for being on your butt the whole day and telling you it couldn’t be tiring deserved a righteous sock right in the jaw; your thoughts wonder as you make it past the bathroom entrance to the events of the night: you’d completed a mission, done good by the MagiTek Department, got on the good side of your superiors, managed to uncover the seeds to a mystery – although unsolved – and beat back the psychic echo of one of the most feared beings on the planet.

And most importantly… that they’d all made it back in one piece.

‘Commander, are you all right?’ Houshou’s worried gaze, even in the bad light, gives your heart a little more warmth – for some reason you feel a little tearful, a little more emotional.’Commander?’

‘No, it’s just…’ You chuckle, looking back to the other three, who offer supportive smiles, ‘I’m just thankful, you know? I mean, it’s just… last time I came back with my tail between my legs, my team shot and everyone… not okay but this time, I – I really did it.’ You lean against the wall, laughing softly. ‘You guys are the best. Even Nachi.’ Kaga giggles behind a closed fist at that remark.

You approach your door, turning around to give them a grateful gaze of your own.

‘Sorry, I’m rambling; I really think I could use anap about now.’ You apologize again; their smiles don’t falter either – Nagato crosses her arms as she nods at you, Kaga’s gaze doesn’t grow cold at all and Takao… Takao just giggles – you must sound like a drunkard. ‘All right, I’ll see you a – !’

The door to your room and Kaga’s doesn’t budge. Kaga subtly smirks, making her way to your side. It figured that the locks had been installed while you were out – she unlocks it and mockingly bows, showing you in. You go right for the bed, sighing as your back makes contact.

She doesn’t follow you in. Did she have duty?

‘Don’t break him, ladies.’ Kaga smirks as she winks, closing the door, leaving you with...

‘Nagato?’ You frown, confused. ‘Takao?’

There is the click of the garter belt and the unzipping of a top.

And it dawns upon you.

‘Face it Tiger…’

One smirks, the other winks.

FUCK I just realized something really worrying.

How did the Abyssals create the Situation in our stream, with the apartment, family relations and all that human stuff?

I mean, if they were already so deep in our head that they could recreate such a scenario from the commander's memories it should have been deep enough for them to at least gleem some Information about our setup in the town and the Admirality.

Otherwise the only possibility is, that the Abyssals already had the information to construct such a scenario in our head on their own, which means the Abyssals are already pretty damn knowledgable about many aspects of humanity, while humanity is still scrapping at the edges when it comes to broader knowledge about the Abyssals

You rush out of the bed, racking the closet for clothes. You take a good whiff of yourself repulsively – you hadn’t had a shower for 24 hours, but it wasn’t a priority right now – even after what had happened in the wee hours of the morning – and with your two fellow partners-in-crime gone, you put their soothing words and promises out of your mind, dashing right out the door past a toweled Tenryuu, who curses at you as you make your way down the stairs.

You messily don the formal wear you’d picked, praying that the old man was outside the compound by some miraculous turn of events to rush you to Teitan High.

What had you been thinking, giving credence to those two making sure the Admiral wouldn’t – !

You open the door to see the Admiral out of his uniform in a red shirt, holding aloft a box of what you guessed by scent to be fresh food. Your panic overtakes your senses as you open with a salute, your pants dropping to his amusement.

‘A – Admiral!’ You pull up your pants, stuttering as he holds up a hand, smiling. ‘I am so sorry, I – !’

Kid.’ He says in that gruff, soothing voice. ‘It’s all right.’ He raises an arm, gesturing for permission to enter. ‘May I?’

‘Y – Yes, sir, of course, sir!’ You salute almost comically, moving out of the way so he could enter.

The Admiral makes his way down the corridor, looking around as he makes his way to the common hall and setting himself on the couch almost casually, patting it to get a good feel and setting the box on the mismatched circular table it had been paired with.

‘Here; got you something from Mamiya’s.’ He presents the box, smiling through that thick mustache of his. ‘You like bao?’

‘I don’t mind it, sure.’ You answer hurriedly; as long as it kept the Admiral in a good mood, you’d say anything – you’d seen him enraged before and you doubted if you could survive a knock to your noggin.

Something hits you as you take a seat.

‘Admiral… isn’t there a meeting… now?’ As far as you knew it was almost 1400.

‘No. I…’ He chuckles, grimacing. ‘I believe I was a little overzealous in my endeavor; the Vice-Admiral will be briefing his Squadron on your discovery and I will sort out the issue of the recon to my own team this afternoon.’ He leans back, folding his hands on his belly. ‘Keep things a little quiet.’

You nod almost dumbly.

‘Mind if I take one?’ He gestures to the box.

He doesn't wait for your answer.

We should really talk to Kaga soon. We've been giving her the cold shoulder ever since we had sex with her. It's like we're trying to break her heart and show her that we don't really care about her. It doesn't help how that act came about either.

We never thank her when she goes to bat for us, never call for her, despite how well knows us and how much she has been able to help us in the past. We never even acknowledge her unless she's right there in front of us. Our behavior toward her is not cool.

Both Takao and Nagato are awesome and getting with them is very much on my to-do list...but if we do so by dropping our other girls like a bad habit it will be a hollow one.

The Admiral is a little casual compared to your usual fare with him, but you’re not exactly uncomfortable with it. You’d never seen him like this before – even after this morning, it looked like things were rather grim all-round, but he didn’t even look the part of a military man right now. In fact, you would go as far to say that he looked the part of a visiting in-law rather than an Admiral for the Admiralty.

‘The girls broke you in, huh?’ The Admiral chuckles – you smile right back. ‘They’ll put you through the ringer if you’re not strict with them; but they’ll listen to you – before anything else, I give ‘em credit for being good soldiers.’ He grimaces, leaning back on the couch. ‘We owe ‘em enough for that alone.’

‘So you do think that they should be recognized as…’ You frown, trying to follow the Admiral’s conversation piece.

‘Heroes.’ He answers simply. Not with enthusiasm or zealous insistence – this was a man who was acknowledging something that, for him, was mere fact. ‘Like every Joe that made a drop or every Harry that made landing, heroes. I’ve been a military man all my life, Commander – sacrifice gives no thought to rank, background… only what you do in those last moments on that field for the people in their homes and at the kitchen counter watching.

‘I believe everyone out there with the guts to take a bullet for the man next to them is one – and the fact that they’re willing to do it a thousand times over without so much as a thank you…’ He takes another bao. ‘Makes ‘em all the more deserving of it, right?’

You neither nod nor do you shake your head. Your thoughts wander back to a certain conversation you had with Takao – Takao and her need for not her, but the sacrifice of one that was so close to her. You didn’t have the capacity to comprehend the lack of recognition – you hadn’t had a background in the military as extensive or as storied as any of those under your building or the man across from you, but whatever it was, you had promised that you would at least try.

‘That new chef is decent.’ The Admiral nods in approval, ‘I wonder how Mamiya was able to get him?’

‘Sir.’ You raise a hand to the Admiral, getting his attention. ‘I have a problem with m - !’

‘Kid,’ he brings a hand to his face, covering his eyes, ‘I swear if this is about – !’

‘No, it’s about what you just said,’ trying to latch on to something you could use to break through, ‘heroes, sir – you recognize the KanMusu as heroes.’

‘I do. As much as any other servicemen past and present.’

‘How are KanMusu remembered for their service?’

The Admiral stiffens, sighing as he takes another bite of the bao.

‘By a form and a name.’

‘Why the lack of recognition?’ You frown, intertwining your hands; it tickled your curiosity that the KanMusu had fought a war for a decade and a half and hadn’t been given so much as a trumpet.

The Admiral puts his foot over his lap, regarding you with a frown.

‘Commander,’ he leans his face on a fist, gruffly asking, ‘have you ever had a car?’

‘No, sir.’ You shake your head. With the war going on, not everyone could toss themselves out to be bothered to get one – especially with the resource shortage. You smile at the memory of passing a few auto traders. ‘I’d always wanted one, though – but doesn’t everyone?’

‘I used to have a car – it was a run-down guzzling beast, but it was my car.’ His mustache bristles with pride. ‘Saw it outside a garage and worked my ass off pulling double-shifts for 2 years until I was finally able to own it.’ You chuckle – if things hadn’t gone as they had the last several years, you probably would have been as normal. ‘Had my first kiss in it, had my first cross-country cruise in it and my first taste of the street scene in it. I don’t know how many times I bumped it into a corner, lost a gasket – hit a tree once, I tell you, what.’

The both of you share a laugh, leaning back in your seats. This felt nice, really, even if you didn’t know what the Commander was getting at. Perhaps he was just trying to make casual conversation with you?

‘I loved that car.’ He recalls fondly. ‘When we first got married, my wife and I, we thought it… it was part of us, part of the family.’ He looks at you brightly, looking decades younger. ‘No matter how many times it just broke down, I just fixed it up again – I put it back together with my sons, they loved that baby to Hell, too. Part of the family and all that, but…’

He shakes his head, grimacing.

‘One day someone came knocking, wondered if it was for sale. I didn’t drive in it that often, I was out on the base most of the time… let her go.’

‘Sir?’ You blink.

‘And I’m pretty sure that that car I sold off to – once it dies off, isn’t going to get a tribute when the miles die down.’ He continues grimly. ‘It’s just going to be sent to scrap and sold off or if it’s lucky, get bought by a collector of shoddy engineering death traps.’

‘But, sir – !’

‘No matter how much you care for it, kid… no matter how much you care or want it,’ He raises a hand. ‘at the end of the day to someone else it’s just another wind-down automobile; it’s got a garage life and a second-hand rate – even if we did have our times in it, no one would get that feeling.’

‘Just a car, huh?’

The Admiral says nothing, before smiling sadly.

‘Just a first car.’

You only nod.

‘You mentioned that the form and a name? What are those for?’ You lean forward, listening intently.

The Admiral scrapes his mustache, looking a lot more distant than he usually was – which was not at all. You bite your lip, wondering if you’d stepped on a particularly sore topic, but he seemingly relents, taking a bite of the bao in-hand.

‘Summon number and designation.’ He says crisply, before frowning and adding. ‘And a date of death.’

‘That’s it?’ You frown, confused… and a little taken aback. ‘That’s all they get?’

‘Yes.’

‘What about proper ceremony?’ You question – as far as you knew, there was at least a trumpet player at military funerals and a round of arms.

‘The KanMusu do it among themselves.’ He grows misty-eyed, letting out a heavy sigh. ‘They don’t bother anyone at all – there’s no fanfare or flag; all they ask is for one day out at sea and they’re back in the saddle after.’ He turns to you, his expression almost blank. ‘It’s what we give them at most – what we believe is at least owed to our soldiers. One day of mourning… and back to the war again.’

‘A little brutal.’ You say, a little more accusatory than you’d meant.

‘Not if you’re from the outside looking in.’ The Admiral looks away from you, clenching one hand. ‘Commander, I’ve buried more than my fair share of soldiers – the good, bad and the terrible – it doesn’t matter how many times I have to strike that register it doesn’t change the fact that the day after I am going to have to send them out there again – it doesn’t change a thing of what I have to do as the Admiral of this base and your XO.’

‘But wouldn’t there be a way to – you know, at least – !’

‘If it’s about ceremony, then I don’t intrude.’ He interrupts you, sending you what could pass for a glare for anyone else. ‘The KanMusu have their own traditions regarding their dead, and I give them what they ask for when it is due. One day, and that’s all it is.’

‘The Admiralty doesn’t care much for this, I guess.’

‘If it doesn’t get them any closer to winning the war, the Admiralty doesn’t care for spit period, kid.’ He laughs darkly. ‘You and I even less, if that’s hard to believe.’

‘So there’s not even an honor lap?’ You’re in a little disbelief now. ‘No trumpet? Kazoo?’

‘There’s one day.’ He nods. ‘That’s all there is – what the KanMusu, the fairies do… I leave it to them.’ He sighs. ‘Whatever it is. For whatever’s left.’

‘You’re not the least bit curious?’

There’s a coldness to his eyes you feel a little frightened by.

Commander.’ He actually does glare at you now. ‘I believe you are crossing a few lines right now.’

‘Why the sudden interest in this, Commander?’ He leans forward, frowning ‘I understand that you’re worried, but I’d really like you to keep yourself on the task.’

‘Sir, it’s… you’re right, I am worried, but…’ You grit your teeth, wondering if you could push it forward to him, before relenting, ‘it’s not – I’m actually wondering if I can ask you for a favor, sir?’

‘Oh?’ He raises an eyebrow.

‘Takao, she…’ You begin your story, feel out the form in your pocket – you had planned to ask the Admiral about it sooner or later, ‘her sister was KIA on an op a few years back.’ ‘She… she wants a burial for her sister, sir.’

‘Hm…’ He looks thoughtful, turning to you with a neutral gaze. ‘I suppose there’s a little more to this than just wanting a slice of land, is there?’

‘She wants a plot in an Imperial Navy Cemetery – with a…’ The Admiral raises an eyebrow at this, and you go on, not missing a beat, ‘a strike of service to the act of falling in the line of duty, as per military regulations and recognition of the service in question to the defense of the nation.’

‘Takao wants Atago to be given a plot in Imperial Navy Cemetery, alongside her fallen brothers and sisters of the flag.’ He sums up for you – to which you nod. He looks away from you, raising a fist to his chin. ‘Did she give a reason why, specifically?’

‘I - No, she didn’t, sir.’ You answer truthfully. ‘I… I think she just wants Atago’s service to be… recognized; at least that’s what I think personally.’

‘She’s using you as a channel.’ You wince. It sounded rather harsh when he said it. ‘She didn’t think of doing this directly?’

‘I think she did, sir.’ You vaguely remember the details, but try to elaborate on them anyway. ‘She was promised a plot by the Admiralty after handling the Kure site negotiations, but there was some kind of bureaucratic misunderstanding or something with the Navy. They wouldn’t give it to her – apparently they hadn’t agreed to the nature of the usage of the ground. She’s been through a few years of appeals and…’

He looks at you tiredly as you trail off, rubbing his temples as he leans back.

‘And you thought you could magically solve it on a whim? Commander, do I need to remind you to control yourself around your Squadron?’ He reluctantly asks. ‘Do you have the form?’

You have it out in a flash, like a rabbit from a hat. You hand him the form; he brings it close to read, mumbling as he goes on, looking tired with every stride of his eyeballs.

‘This is dated more than 3 years ago.’ He answers with a groan. ‘I’ll see if I can make a few calls, but no guarantees.’

Nah. It's just to indicate that the Commander is guessing the Admiral is here for a reason and not a simple visit.

‘So is there a reason you’re in for a visit?’ You frown, giving his tired features a look. ‘Am I being punished?’

‘A few things.’ He chuckles at you, but it’s not full amusement – it’s more from disbelief. ‘But mostly regarding just what happened in the last 12 hours.’

You stiffen considerably as you remember everything all over again. You’d hoped that Nagato and Takao’s indulgences would have at least kicked out the bulk of that experience.

‘Of course, sir.’ You crick your neck, feeling uncomfortable.

‘Commander, I want a complete lockdown on the discussion and the divulging of your findings and the experiences of this morning outside of your Division.’ He looks to you seriously – it’s more of a desperate glance, an empty threat with tired thoughts. ‘You can talk to them about it if you’d like, but they cannot, I repeat, they cannot and must not discuss this outside of this Division. Everything that occurred over that operation is dark – and until I can be sure of what my suspicions are, I’d like your cooperation with this.’

‘Why?’ You frown. ‘Shouldn’t we be – ?’

‘I’ve had a thought, but I’m not going to turn into a gossip hen,’ he raises a hand, and you know you’re not going to get much else out of him, ‘consider this a direct order from me – and a personal request.’ He nods grimly. ‘Until I find out just what is going on, I want you to tell me you can keep this under wraps from anyone but your team. The Vice-Admiral’s already given the nod to me; now I’m asking the same for you. Whatever it is that happened in the last 12 hours is to stay on this base and not reach anywhere else. The psychic attack, that substance you found, the Princess’s corpse and its location, all of it goes dark and not a pen to ink.’

‘I don’t get it.’You exasperatedly flop onto the couch. ‘We found a dead Princess – that should be something to tell the people, right?’

‘A dead Princess we didn’t make dead. That we couldn’t have made dead.’ He looks ahead. ‘Far from it for me to lie to the public on that front – and from it for us to be the one’s to take the credit for it. If it’s credit due.’

‘Admiral, I’m not sure if I agree with this.’ You turn to him, confused. ‘You’re asking me to – !’

‘I’m asking and begging you to keep quiet about this.’

You sigh.

‘What about the Admiralty, then?’

‘Especially the Admiralty.’

‘Wouldn’t they be able to use this information?’ You’re even more confused now than you are before.

‘Not until I can get a clearer picture of what I can give them. As it is, we’re looking at the tip of a Hell of an iceberg.’ He finishes his bao, pushing the half-filled box away.

>‘What do you mean a clearer picture?’
>‘Does this have to do with the findings?’

‘All right, sir. I’ll agree with that.’

Cloak and dagger wasn’t something you were particularly fond off – not after the Grand Lieutenant’s fiasco and your previous working stations, but…

‘Thanks, kid.’ He gives you a good-natured smile, before taking out a piece of paper from his back pocket. ‘Now, there’s another thing that I’d like to talk to you about – now that we’re at least up to speed, we’ve gone through District Management, but now that you’ve finally got a mission under your belt proper, you’re going to have to join the rest of us pencil pushers with the grind. We don’t have a Guardian Office for you proper, so in the meantime you’ll have to use the facilities here to do your work. Your girls will always have a note to you on where they’ll be – and if you need one to come to you, all you have to do is get an attendant to sign off and they’ll grab them within the hour.’

‘What’ll I be doing?’ You cross your arms. ‘I always thought that I’d just be a frontline Commander at most.’

‘Requisition forms, fairy tech approval, triple-checking with Yuubari, Akashi and Ooyodo, that kind of thing.’ He nods at you, putting his leg on his lap. ‘You’re a grown man, so I don’t have to tell you what you or hold your hand – just whatever they need, you fill out. That’ll take up most of your morning.

‘If the Admiralty’s swamping me as is, I’ll be able to actually give you a mission every 3-5 days. Every time you get a mission completed or at least achieve an objective, you help the Admiralty out, and they’ll be able to fit you with better equipment, a little more room to work with and maybe if they’re feeling – or if I’m feeling – a little more generous, maybe something for you and the girls.’ He smiles at that. ‘Any time you have in between the props, you can do with as you want, but remember you have a limited amount of time for things, so make sure you plan your day right.’

‘I can sort myself out, Admiral.’ You give a friendly smirk.‘I think I can manage my day just fine.’

‘Commander, need I remind you that you were rushing for the door about an hour ago?’

‘Okay, all right.’ You deflate, waving a hand in defeat.

He looks thoughtful for a moment.

‘Also, you’re going to have to clear most of your evenings. The Vice-Admiral finally has a gym up and running, so when you’re feeling it, go see him to see how you can train up. A healthy body means a healthy mind and a better constitution.’ He smiles. ‘And you can always brings a girl or two to suffer with you.’

You smile a bit at that.

‘So, congratulations on your first completed mission, Commander.’ He hands you a form. ‘A little something we cobbled together.’

>TASK: Upgrade 1 KanMusu (+1 to a Statistic)
>BONUS TASK: Improve something about the Barracks
>>
>>284946
I feel like we should upgrade Tenryuu's offensive stat, seeing as how she's been in two missions. And I've been looking at the Barracks stats, what things in particular are we able to improve? I was kind of drawn to the "unbuilt" plot of land.

OOC: Hi, MECHANIC here.

First off, Congratulations on all of you for making it past the grueling TUTORIAL stage, Questers. Needed a little prodding, but you guys made it out just fine. Now, second of all, what do I mean about improving the barracks?

The current barracks is a little bit run down and the maintenance guys have done a little to improve it and given you hot water and the like, but there are things that you could put in to make it a little livelier. Maybe a television set, some nice paintings, a table for you to work - a foosball table or a table hockey set for the girls on one corner of the room or even a working stove and pantry for that matter.

Maybe if you're lucky enough in future endeavors, you can even unlocks the Not!SNES

The Barracks are your current home - maybe your only home - and as the man of the house it is your duty to make it livable and comfortable for the rest of them. Think of this mechanic as something like the original game's office.
>>
>>284978
The unbuilt plot of land will be or won't be used for a future site when you have completed enough missions and amassed enough goodwill and supplies to put something there. Right now you're only able to concentrate on things around the base. You unlocked this by completing a Lv. 2 Mission Side Objective.
>>
>>284990
Ah, very well then. In that case I vote to add a foosball table, since everybody loves foosball.
>>
>>284983
A decent common area would be good thing to have/aim for. Like a good couch or two, some decent chairs, a tv with DVDs, and a bookshelf for our more literature inclined shipgirls. Just a good gathering area for relaxing amongst the squad.
>>
>>284990
On stats:
What does the Support stat mean?
When we upgrade a girl do we always use the Aquarius Alchemical Materials that raise two stats +2 at the expense of -1 for the other?
>>
>>284997
>>285009
We should check out is in storage. Rooms 2, 8, & 10 are listed as "CLUTTER AND STORAGE". In the Statistics Google Doc linked in first post.
>>
>>285010
http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/qstarchive/158472/#p171644

The upgrade properties are all there.

You can use the Aquarius Alchemical Materials any time I call for a vote on their usage - which will be every morning when you do your paperwork or you can keep it for future project(s) you can use it for, which was the vote last time.
>>
>>285022
Is one the lowest a stat can be? Or can it go to zero?
>>
>>285022
Thank you kindly.
>>
>>285026
1 is the lowest level it can be. For reference.

OFFENSE: Increases piercing and damage capabilities. You won't be making a Princess to look at you until you're at least Lv. 5. You won't unlock 6 and 7 until certain "quests" are completed..

DEFENSE: Increases the acceleration and sensors as well as the strength of the emergency SHIELD You will not be able to upgrade past Lv. 5 until certain "quests" are completed.

SUPPORT: Intangible value. Stamina, maybe a emergency teleport
>>
I think I'm going to lock in my vote for upgrading Tenryuu's offensive stat.
>>
>>285082
That's a vote for Tenryuu. Closing in about 30 minutes. I know this'll take a bit of thought.
>>
>>284946
I vote for upgrading Shigure's Supply rating. She utterly wrecked face in our first mission, saving everyone's asses. It was even specifically mentioned she ran out of ammo.

Let's fix that.
>>
>>285087
Er. Support rating. You knew what I meant.
>>
Ok so reading that we probably want to restrict upgrades to those of our ships currently in cool down. Apparently upgrades take time to implement. Or is that just for alchemical enhancements?

Anyways, ideas:
Tenryuu definitely needs more oomph, considering how we're using her.

Houshou sounds like a prime candidate for Defense spending.

Samidare clearly needs improved sensors given the Mackrel incidents last mission.

Takao...didn't really get a chance shine this last mission. Downside of holding her back. So I don't know about her.

Others:
If I'm reading trauma right, Shigure may appreciate being able to heal her sisters. Also that emergency teleport sounds right up her ally. So we should consider upping her Support.

We've never fielded Kaga or Nagato so I can't comment on them.

Still thinking about the others.
>>
>>285082
>>285086
I will also vote to upgrade Tenryuus offensive stat as I am a man with little imagination.
>>
>>285087
Supporting upping Shigure's supply
>>
>>285086
>Shigure - Support Upgrade

After consideration, I believe her's is the most clear-cut need. Also, we'll still be able to field four ships even if it does bench her on the next mission.
>>
>>285093
Alchemical enhancements. I can give you a list of basic upgrade rewards if you'd like for each mission?
>>
>>285087
I can back this. With Tenryuu in cool down, upping her stats now might not really give us that extra bonus on the next mission. Plus, kinda want to let her rest more for today, after what she all went through.

You know, the best time to use those materials we have might be now, considering with everyone at base 1, the penalty is a moot point.
>>
>>285114
1) good to know.
2) Upgrade rewards? Are you talking things like the ORB or something else?
>>
>>285087
This sounds like a good idea.
>>
>>285116
>You know, the best time to use those materials we have might be now, considering with everyone at base 1, the penalty is a moot point.
I agree with this, though again I feel we should apply the alchemical enhancements to ships in cool down, to minimise disruption of our roster. We were warned it could take a ship out of commission for up to a week.
>>
>>285122
No, I mean, every time you complete a mission what the basic rewards for completion are.

Lv. 4 Missions: +2 Stat to 1 KanMusu and +1 Stat to 2 KanMusu/MODERATE Goodwill with Admiralty
Lv. 3 Missions: +2 Stat to 1 KanMusu/MODERATE Goodwill with Admiralty
Lv. 2 Missions: +1 Stat to 1 KanMusu/MINOR Goodwill with the Admiralty
Lv. 1 Missions: MINOR Goodwill with the Admiralty.
>>
>>285139
OOC: When you guys complete enough missions, we'll progress with the main plot.

Remember that you can do FOUR things a day after you pull duty - FIVE if you choose to STAY UP LATE - which gives you a penalty for waking up the next morning but decreases as you do better sessions with the Vice-Admiral's fitness regime
>>
>>285139
More rewards for more difficulty. Yeah, we should definitely spend our banked supplies. We'll need the power in order to gain more power faster.
>>
>>285152
>Remember that you can do FOUR things a day after you pull duty - FIVE if you choose to STAY UP LATE - which gives you a penalty for waking up the next morning
Is upgrading ships part of pulling duty, a single common task, or does each ship count as one task?
>>
>>285166
If the Dice Gods are generous we should get some good gains. Big IF though.
>>
>>285166
If you guys are banking on using your Alchemical Supplies, choose:

SHIP 1 +Stat/+Stat/-Stat
SHIP 2 +Stat/+Stat/-Stat

UPGRADE SHIP 1 +Stat

Be back in an hour to see your consensus.
>>
>>285174
It's part of your paperwork, so it doesn't consume an action. What consumes an action:

Wandering around, finding a girl specifically, meeting up with any NPC of your own volition, going to the gym early or chatting around with locals or seeing Fingers and District Management progress and changing it at any time other than the end of the week.
>>
Guys before you choose anything, take a look at
http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/qstarchive/158472/#p171644

Apparently alchemical enhancements come with special equipment. Like the Lambda-0000, or the WHITE DEVIL Conservation Drive.
>>
>>285183
OOC: Good eye. Other upgrades from missions will have the same properties, but those equipped with this gear will have it increased every time they upgrade. For example, the WHITE DEVIL Drive might heal a lot more as you upgrade SUPPORT. If you go the normal path, things like healing and the shield don't upgrade with +s in stats.

Use this up though, and that's it.
>>
I'm thinking
Tenryuu - Offense
Sadimare - Defense
Because a destroyer that pure should be defended.
>>
>>285183
>>285202
In that case, we should dump some of our alchemical materials into Shigure's support stat while we upgrade her.
>>
>>285217
That would take her out commission for next mission. As per Mechanic
>>285114
>Alchemical enhancements.
In response to my question,
>>285093
>Apparently upgrades take time to implement. Or is that just for alchemical enhancements?

Alchemical Enhancements, but not standard upgrades, bench our ships for awhile. Do you that's with it? (Honest question)
>>
>>285221
>Do you that's with it?
Do you think that's worth it.

>>
>>285216
>>285217

Refer to the format I've written, example:

ALCHEMY Takao +Defense/+Support/-Offense
ALCHEMY Kaga +Offense/+Support/-Defense

UPGRADE Samidare +Support

You don't have to use both Alchemical components right now. You can use one... or none. You can always come to another decisiion in the morning when you go on duty proper.

>>285176
>>
>>285216
>>285221
It's up to you if you want to do it now, but... if you do it now, that's it. You get 2 really useful utility abilities for emergencies if you use Support and Defense upgrades and a sweet +2 for your weaponry to better kill the big fish.

I totally don't have surprises for people keeping them around until a certain prompt is unlocked :^) No, honest, really.
>>
>>285226

>>285226

We go to Mamiya to learn the more advanced kanmasu cooking techniques. We tried going to her before but MECHANIC told us that we needed to get the basics down first. She's very busy and doesn't have time for amatures it seems. No matter how nice she is.

So we have two options: find a way to lure a kanmasu speciaily chef to our district and convince them to teach us...or go to the other kanmasu who taught the original chefs.

>>256634
>‘Houshou and Mamiya can teach you, if you want to.’ Shigure turns to you, smiling. ‘I… can’t cook, but if you want to learn, then Houshou or Mamiya can teach you. They thought the first… cooks, I think.’ She bites her lip. ‘But Mamiya is very busy, I’m not sure if she’d…’

Any progress on this? I'd really like to read it before we get too far into things. The last one fleshed out the characters quite a bit. It exposed a lot of their insecurities, worries, and inner emotional turmoil.

We have nothing on last night though. Not cuddling, not a heartfelt conversation, not even a few words in passing as they went their separate ways in the morning. Considering how much you pushed the no sex drive / stunted emotional development of most shipgirls in earlier threads I feel like we're missing a significant milestone in their development as characters.
