===============

You are Prince Meirion auk Gwyrren, the only sane man in a royal family with dubious concepts of strategy, justice, taxation, and governance in general. You have made it your goal in life to keep your family on the throne and your head firmly attached to your body.

You wake up alone for the first time in… a couple of days, actually. It still feels strangely lonely, as if waking up next to Olwen has become normal for you already.

Or maybe you're just waxing philosophical because you don't feel like getting out of bed yet. Sadly, the decision is taken out of your hands when Myrddin comes pounding on your door.

"Your highness! The delegation just arrived at the port!"

"Which one? We're waiting for six of them."

"It's the Vitland ship," Myrddin says. "The Queen has returned."

"I'll be right out."

You leap out of bed and change into the first set of clean clothes you get your hands on. You're still straightening yourself out when you rush out of the room. Myrddin struggles to keep up with your pace.

"I thought they were going to make port at Mynydffern first," you say. "Did something happen?"

"There haven't been any messengers from the port aside from my people," Myrddin says. "She probably just wanted to save herself the carriage ride."

Prince Haul, as the Crown Prince, was mostly raised by your father, while Princess Nesta always idolized your brother. When you were born, Queen Margrete decided to become more involved with your upbringing to make sure you weren't unduly influenced by some of your fathers "eccentricities." Since you were only the second prince, no one complained.

Shortly after you became more involved with the affairs of the kingdom, she decided to return to Vitland to look after your aging grandfather. You haven't seen her in years; the trip across the western ocean isn't that far for merchants, but it's too long for personal travel.

>"Get a carriage. We'll go pick her up."
>"Let the palace know. We'll greet her when she arrives."

And since I didn't want to bump an old thread for something minor, here are the answers to some of the questions from last time.

>>220109

Enchantment is usually better for weapons. You can make something like FOOF with alchemy, but then you need to figure out how to store and transport it without killing yourself. Once you've figured out how to make, say, exploding cannon balls that don't immediately blow up in your face, they're much safer to handle.

>>220466

The relationships are mostly about political power. Theoretically, it's possible for wives/consorts/concubines to have other relationships, but in most cases, it's just not practical because of all the conflicting interests.

Inside the relationship, it depends. Olwen understands the politics of it, so she would be inclined to also consider herself the consort of Meirion's wife.

"Get a carriage," you say. "We'll go pick her up."

"Right away, your highness," Myrddin says.

While Myrddin goes off in search of transportation, you look for Olwen. You catch up to her just as she's leaving her room pull her away.

"Your highness, wait," she says. "Where are we going?"

"Mother's back," you say, "so we're going to meet her."

"You want me to meet your mother?" Olwen asks. "Now? Couldn't you let me know in advance?"

"I only just heard about it," you say. "Besides, haven't you met my mother already?"

"That's not the point, your highness."

You ignore Olwen's protests and drag her over to the carriage. You had to deal with her father yesterday, so she can smile and greet your mother in return. This is the sort of thing couples do, right?

Olwen grumbles all the way, but she reluctantly climbs into the carriage just the same. Myrddin smirks at her throughout the whole journey. It does very little to help your consort's mood.

The carriage stops close to an ornate ocean vessel bearing the white diamond on a blue background that symbolizes Vitland's royal family. A tall woman with snow-white hair gracefully steps off the ship, escorted by a dozen guards.

You step out of the carriage and the woman's face immediately lights up.

"Meirion!"

She saunters down the ramp, nearly tossing some of her guards into the water in the process, and presses your head against her chest in a hug that threatens to crush your skull, choke you, or both.

"I'm so happy to see you again! You've grown so much since I left!"

>"I missed you as well, mother."
>"Welcome back, mother."

"I missed you as well, mother," you say. "Things have been difficult around here."

"Oh, dear." Your mother sighs. "Has your father been going on about justice again?"

"Among other things," you say. "Come, let's go back to the palace. We can talk along the way."

Your mother steps up to the carriage and Myrddin and Olwen both bow respectfully before her.

"Welcome back, your majesty," Myrddin says. "We're pleased that you could join us for this occasion."

"Myrddin, thank you so much for looking after my son!" Your mother says. "It must have been difficult for you."

"No, this is well within the scope of my abilities," Myrddin says. "I'd be quite bored without this job."

Your mother sits in the carriage and you wait around a while longer for the guards to get themselves organized so they can escort you back to the palace. In the meantime, you wrack your brain trying to figure out how you're going to tell your mother about your personal matters.

"So, Meirion, what are you up to these days?"

Myrddin does a bad job of stifling a laugh. "Yes, your highness," he says, "what have you been up to these days?"

Well. You're done wracking your brain whether you like it or not.

"Olwen is my consort," you blurt out.

"Did you have to just come out and say it?" Olwen hides her face in shame and curls up in her corner of the carriage.

"I get to deal with your father," you say, "and you get to deal with this. It's just fair."

Your mother looks at Olwen's hips and chest.

"I suppose that's not a bad body for childbearing," she says. "Just cut back on your training a little."

Olwen whimpers and tries fruitlessly to bury herself deeper.

"It's a bit early for that mother," you say. "It'd be improper for one of my consorts to have a child before my wife."

"Ah, yes, Haul is marrying a maid after all." Your mother shakes her head sadly. "It's such a shame that boy never got used to his position. Really, who marries for love? If I had married your father out of sentiment, we would have gotten divorced years ago."

Then again, with how long your mother's been away, they might as well be divorced anyway.

"What's the situation around Gwyrddarfordir?" Your mother asks. "Your father sends letters, but they're not very informative about important things."

You briefly explains the trouble you've been having with your uncles, the conflicts in Olstren and Rosea, as well as the various rumours you've heard.

"At the moment, we're considering political marriages to Olstren, Svekka, or Rosea," Myrddin says. "It's still too early to make a final decision."

"At least one of my sons his thinking things through carefully," your mother says. "Thank you so much for setting him straight, Myrddin."

"My pleasure, your majesty."

The queen turns to you. "Tell me, Meirion," she says, "between Olstren, Svekka, and Rosea, do you know which country is in the most difficult position for your purposes?"

You think about your mother's question for a moment and review what you know about those kingdoms.

Rosea is generally hostile to Gwyrddarfordir, but the enmity isn't that great at the moment. The biggest problem to you there is that Archduchess Aleksandra isn't in line to inherit the throne, an alliance with them would limit your potential.

Svekka is in the middle of some conflict between the nobles and the merchants, and the royal family is trying to keep the conflict from blowing out of proportion and taking the whole kingdom down with it. If you threw your lot in with them, you'd need to find some way to resolve the conflict before you could secure your position.

Olstren, you're more familiar with. The royal family's influence is on the decline, and various noble families are trying to use their connections to the king's consorts or digging up old marriage ties in order to make a claim for the throne. Princess Reagan has maintained her position by assassinating all the nobles who tried to court her, but if you married her, you'd have to find some way to suppress her opposition.

"I believe the answer is obvious."

"Svekka."

Your mother claps her hands. "That's right, Meirion," she says. "I'm so proud of you!"

There's not much you can do in Rosea, but you can at least get an army and a significant amount of land out of them.

Olstren is more dangerous, but it's just a question of purging all the nobles who get in your way. That's not difficult, just tedious. Besides, if you follow Myrddin's advice, you'll probably have enough children to replace most of Olstren's nobility on your own.

Svekka is different. If the merchants are suppressed, the entire kingdom will be weakened. They have to be dealt with through negotiations, not conquest. That's a much more difficult task to undertake.

"It's not much," you say. "If I don't take these little details into consideration, I'll be the first one to pay."

"That's exactly the kind of foresight a king should have," your mother says. "Father abdicated so he could retire, and my brothers are getting along now that I had their most prominent supporters assassinated - you'd be surprised how much hemlock it takes to kill a fat enough man - so I won't be leaving again any time soon. I look forward to meeting all the girls you're interested in."

"I was hoping you could help me with that, actually," you say. "I know you had father had some… difficulties, but you've managed to make things work well enough."

"I'll be happy to help, dear," your mother says. "Olwen, let's have dinner once I've settled in. We can talk about your plans."

Olwen hangs her head. "Yes, your majesty," she says. "I look forward to it."

The carriage arrives at the palace and you step out. Olwen regains a bit of vigour as she runs around and puts together an improvised honour guard to greet the queen. Your mother stands proud and calmly walks towards the door.

In front of the throne room, the queen takes a deep breath to steel herself and pushes the doors open.

"Darling! I'm home!"

"Margrete!"

The king jumps off his throne and for a moment and your parents run into each others' arms.

"Margrete, I didn't expect you so soon!"

"I know, darling," the queen says, "but I wanted to meet Haul and his bride as soon as possible. Do you know where they are?"

"He's interviewing someone for a post at the treasury," King Gerad said. "An impressive young man by the name of Gryfter Boxman. He comes highly recommended by my brother."

Your mother smiles stiffly. "Yes, well, that can wait," she says. "Meeting my son is much more important than whatever silly thing the treasury is doing, isn't it?"

It's so nice to have another competent person around here.

"Too true, too true!"

"Meirion, I need to pay your siblings a visit now," your mother says. "We'll speak about that matter again later, all right?"

"Of course, mother."

You exit the throne room and comfort Olwen, who is still thoroughly mortified by her encountered with your mother.

"That was the most embarrassing moment of my life," she says. "She won't ask about our sex life, will she?"

"Given how interested she is in your childbearing disposition, I'd be surprised if she didn't," you say. "But if it makes you feel any better, you won't be the only one getting embarrassed before she's done."

"I'll take comfort in the fact that the Crown Prince's maid will get it worse than I did," Olwen says. "Although with the size of her chest, I doubt she'll be told to cut back her training."

"Come on." You wrap your arm around Olwen's shoulder. "We have to pay the Enchanters' Guild a visit. Why do we need to go there again, Myrddin?"

"Utilities," Myrddin says. "Hardly the most glamorous job for your highness, but if the water stops running in the palace while it's full of guests…"

"I get the idea," you say.

"We can always ask about weapons while we're there," Olwen says. "It'll make a more interesting topic of discussion. What does it say about me that I'm so invested in helping my man flirt with other women?"

You give her a kiss. "It means you're considerate of others and willing to compromise for the sake of the kingdom," you say. "And that puts you two points ahead of Myrddin."

"I've made many sacrifices for the kingdom," Myrddin says, "so you'll forgive me if I don't offer myself up to your highness as well."

"You're pardoned of any and all crimes so long as you promise never to say that again," you say.

You decide to get out of the palace as quickly as you can and go to the Enchanters' Guild.

They're even busier than the Alchemists' Guild, but you quickly find a clerk who can help you check the state of the palace's request. According to their ledger, everything is in order, and they'll be able to fix any problems swiftly. You even arrange for a team of enchanters to stay in the palace for the duration of the celebrations, just in case. You're certain they'll appreciate the job.

"Is there anything else we can help you with, sir?" The clerk asks.

"I've been asked to meet with Nia Fisher," you say. "There are a few non-urgent matters that the Crown wants to discuss before things get too busy."

"Of course, sir," the clerk says. "May I ask what you'd like to discuss?"

Since you're here to talk about the palace's utilities, you might as well be thorough. It might come in useful at some point.

"Just a few details about the utilities," you say. "I have some questions about long-term issues that aren't immediately relevant to the celebrations."

"Very well, sir," the clerk says. "I'll let Miss Fisher know immediately."

"I'd complain about how boring this is probably going to be," Olwen grumbles, "but it can't be worse than speaking to your mother."

The clerk soon returns with a young woman with long, pale hair. You're not sure your mother would approve of her. Her hips aren't bad, but her chest is somewhat lacking.

"Oh, your highness." The woman gives you a look so smug, you're not sure even Myrddin would be able to pull it off. "I didn't expect to see you so soon."

The clerk's face turns white and he very quietly leaves the room.

"Hello, Miss Fisher," you say. "I wasn't aware we were acquainted."

"We're not," Nia says. "But I was present during your duel with Cadryff. For you to duel with a man over a woman and then come to my offices with a different woman, I can't help but feel a little… curious."

You look at Olwen, who simply shrugs. You doubt Nia's just interested in gossip. Maybe you can use this chance to gauge her interest?

"Perhaps I can satisfy your curiosity?" You ask. "I'd hate for unpleasant rumours to spread about me."

"Of course, you highness," Nia says. "Please, follow me. It isn't much, but I have some tea for you and your companion."

"You don't need to mind me," Olwen says. "His highness' matters are more important than mine."

"Even so, it would be rude if I ignored you wouldn't it?" Nia asks. "Might I ask your name, at least?"

"I don't see why not," Olwen says. "Olwen auk Vaughan."

"Oh my, I was nearly rude to your grace," Nia says. "Please forgive me."

"My father still has the duchy," Olwen says. "Our status isn't so different at the moment."

"His highness would disagree with that, I think," Nia says, "although your words are worth considering."

Nia brings you to one of the more pleasant waiting rooms and sets an enchanted kettle to boil.

You're beginning to suspect this conversation isn't about enchantment.

"I was quiet moved to see his highness fight for a woman's love," Nia says. "I sometimes wish I could enjoy that kind of treatment as well."

In fact, you're quite certain this conversation isn't about enchantment at all.

Nia's expressions of interest would make Myrddin giddy if he were here, but you… you don't want to lead anyone on, and you have many other things to take into consideration before you even think of selecting a concubine.

On the other hand, this is also a chance for you and Nia to get to know each other, which is the whole point of this visit.

>[Sovereign/1d10] "In many ways, that duel was one of my duties as a prince."
>[Dilettante/1d10] "Cadryff offended a friend of mine. I couldn't let it go."
>[Enchantment/1d10] "That was just some trivial business. I'd rather focus on today's business."

>You have an active crit for this next roll. Will I remember to mention this in the post? Let's find out together!

You might as well see where this is going. If nothing else, it'll be good practice for later."

"Oh." Nia looks disappointed. "I was hoping it'd be more than that."

Apparently, it went no where.

"I'm afraid not," you say. "To be honest, I've been through quite a few fights. That duel wasn't much."

"I suppose that attitude is appropriate for the Victorious Prince," Nia says. "In that case, what can I help you with?"

"I had some questions about utilities," you say. "I'm interested in urban development."

"Come to think of it," Olwen says, "do you think it'd be possible to set up utilities for army camps?"

"Such things already exists, albeit in a limited fashion." Nia nods towards her enchanted kettle. "However, if you're talking about more elaborate enchantments such as showers, it's something we've been working on for the last few years."

"Wouldn't that be inconvenient to move around?" You ask.

"We've been importing some Svekkan technologies," Nia says. "They focus on mass-production and making standardized parts. Right now, we have to build every piece of a shower by hand, but if our current projects produce results, we'd be able to build the shower piece by piece so that it can be disassembled. It would be cheaper and it would make maintenance much, much easier."

"How long do you think that would take?" You ask.

"The tools are designed for Svekkan enchantments, so we need to adapt them to Gwyrddarfordir," Nia says. "Enchantment is very precise work, so it can be difficult. Still, the Enchanters' Guild's goal is to make simpler enchantments such as utilities, lightstones, iceboxes and heaters cheaper and more accessible to the general public."

"I would've assumed that the military is your biggest client," Olwen says.

"Arms dealing is more profitable, but it's not as reliable," Nia says. "Besides, we prefer to work towards benefits rather than harm, even if we do have to make weapons."

"I'll keep that in mind," you say. "Thank you for speaking with me."

"I hope we'll be able to meet during the Crown Prince's celebrations," you say.

Nia briefly frowns. "Of course, your highness," she says. "I've received a few invitations myself. I quite look forward to it."

With your business settled, you leave the Enchanters' Guild to return to the palace. As soon as you step out of the building, you get a scolding from Olwen.

"That was terrible," she says. "No wonder Myrddin had to put so much effort into finding you a woman. Then again, if it means I get to monopolize you a bit longer, I suppose it's not so bad."

"In what way was that terrible?"

"You know she was flirting with you, right?" Olwen doesn't even give you the time to answer. "You told her you fought a duel over a friend and then you asked her out on a date during the Crown Prince's celebrations. How can she know where she stands."

"I said nothing that wasn't accurate," you say.

"I'll be sure to ask your mother if she agrees with me."

You get the sudden feeling that, if it isn't terrible yet, it will be soon.

And today's thread comes to an end after a cockblock from the dice gods.

The next thread will be Friday June 10th at 7PM EDT. Until then, if you have any questions, you can just post them here and I'll get around to reading them before the thread falls off the board. I'm not sure when or where I'll post the answers, but I'll get around to it eventually.

Until next time, good night and thanks for playing.

Hmm, so a double critfail results not only in a dead stop on the Nia route, but also having to deal with Mom giving us flirting lessons or whatever horrible thing she'll do.

Well played, dice gods.

How did our parents meet?
Why did they get married?
How much of our mom's interactions with our dad is sincere and how much is an act?
How common is divorce amongst royalty/nobility?

>Svekka is different. If the merchants are suppressed, the entire kingdom will be weakened. They have to be dealt with through negotiations, not conquest. That's a much more difficult task to undertake.
I like those odds.

I think dad would have objections about that.
But I'm game if dad somehow finds himself...undisposed.
