You believe you do not belong in the “worst of humanity” category that Parvaneh just mentioned. As a matter of fact, it wouldn't have been so unusual for bandits, thieves and assorted criminals to have enlisted in the Reconquista to escape justice. You weren't screened or anything when you decided to embark for the Shadow Marches, but then again you're not wanted anywhere in Nalesia. You've been a good girl, all considered.

To the centaur wizard, this is enough to form a connection between the two of you, or at least that's the look you feel she's giving you. Of course there's easily more than what she probably means in her eyes, which are still flickering with dancing licks of iridescent flame, giving her a striking presence that her body and apparel alone couldn't accomplish.

Bryld seems like she's quite enraptured by those eyes. You would have expected her to be mildly intimidated by this point, but maybe she has a strange taste for people.

And now you're sure that if you said that aloud and Tahenohan was around, she would've made a snarky comeback at you. And you'd have fully deserved it.

“You don't think exploration is just about treausre, do you?”, Bryld asks the centaur, somehow a bit disappointed to even think that.

“It would be a very inaccurate claim”, Parvaneh agrees, “But not incorrect. Treasure hunting is a renowed tradition, betrothed to every exploration effort since the dawn of time. Ours, I both suspect and hope, shan't be different”.

Bryld gives you a strange look. You shrug. You don't yet know how to feel about this. Sure, treasure is nice, but it would feel a bit disappointing for a cartographer to be told her efforts are really just noise compared to the rampant pillaging that really was the point all along. This you can understand, which is why her expression doesn't really surprise you.

“Is it just the two of you?”, the centaur wizard then asks, without even looking around to check: there's just a few children staring at you from a safe distance, “I suspect not. I would be delighted to meet the rest of your party”.

“It's not, there's three other people already”, you explain, “But they're not here. We'll meet by dinner at the recreational area, if you're interested”.

“I certainly am, my dear fellow”, she offers a wide smile and a horse curtsey, “May I ask to be excused so I can prepare for this adventure? I have some... Arrangements to do”.

“Please take your time, we're not in a hurry”, you assure her. As a matter of fact, you do not have any specific plan for this next endeavour of yours.

“Then I shall meet you at the appointed time, in the appointed place”, and she tips her wide-brimmed hat to you again, “Until then, my fellow”.

"So what do you think?", you ask Bryld once you are comfortably alone. Well, aside from the curious children who stare at you from a safe distance and whisper things to each other while pointing. Kids.

"I may have picked the wrong profession in life", she muses, nodding to herself, "Seriously though, I don't know. I mean if we're going to be adventurers I'll just... Stay back and let you do the adventuring. I hope these new people can protect me while I draw maps, because that's what I'm good at".

You chuckle, "Well I can't fight either, and I'd rather avoid to do so entirely. It was just, you know, a safety measure. From this point on the wilderness becomes more dangerous, that's what everyone's been telling us".

"I know, I'm just exaggerating. Well, mostly", she sighs, "It's probably nothing, and besides I don't actually mind the kind of company we're getting".

"You don't?".

"Well I don't know Julio and Carrera much, but they seem to have a nice chemistry with each other", and she does that gesture where she repeatedly taps her extended index and middle finger with each other, kind of like a scissor, "And this Parvaneh is...".

"Interesting?", you suggest.

"Well, yes, that's one way to put it", she smiles, "The kind of company I'd expect by associating with you".

"Now what does that mean?", you playfully cross your arms and inch closer.

"Hehehe, you know what it means", and she pats your arms with an even brighter smile, "But really, I think we should try and stock up a bit, I know Carrera is taking care of that already, but I don't want to rely on her too much, I would like to give the impression that we know what to do and that we are not, in fact, just a bunch of inexperienced fools".

Well, admittedly you are inexperienced and maybe a bit foolish too, but it's still not the kind of idea you want to give to anyone.

"Shall we visit a shop then? We don't have much money though, not for what this equipment goes for...".

"We'll manage. And besides, maybe we can exchange some favours? Do you happen to know any merchants, that maybe sell something more... Adventure-ready than chocolate?".

You ponder for a moment, "I know a merchant that goes by the name of Nasir, I think he's a... I don't know exactly what he sells, but maybe it's something more useful".

"Not that I mind chocolate", Bryld immediately points out. You can't think of anyone who does.

“What about the party composition?”, you then ask.

She ponders for a moment, “... I'd say our group is fine as it is? Maybe a priest of Jure would make us feel a bit safer, but I don't want our party to get too large. But I don't know”, she shrugs and just looks at you in the eye, her brown and perky bunny ears flicking lightly, “Your dad is the expert on adventuring parties, maybe ask him?”.

Hello MP
>>
"Alright, let's go look for my father", you then announce, "He'll likely have some advice for us".

"Sure!", Bryld smiles at you, "Let me accompany you, I'm interested to see what he has to say".

"Do you trust his experience?".

"I trust him being your father", and she smiles mysteriously while getting hold of your arm.

Regardless of what she meant, you traipse around Maner to look for your father. Travelling across the very poorly organized camp is a nearly harrowing experience, requiring much patience and hard work. During this arduous task you begin to notice, also thanks to Bryld's help, that a few places kind of remind you of certain areas you are familiar with, certain regions of the kingdom of Rune. Between the family composition being similar, just like the furniture, and the somatic traits of the humans you see being attributable to an ethnicity you know or have seen before, you can't help but notice that many either came together or decided to stick together when possible.

Likely the first, according to Bryld's speculation. She seems to be able to tell the provenance of people at first glance more easily than you do, mostly because she likely came in contact with more of them thanks to living in the capital. While you definitely travelled more than she did, the places you've been in were hardly cosmopolitan in that regard.

Since this kind of search is long and apparently fruitless, you very quickly switch to asking for information. While your father is not too difficult to find in a crowd, his description isn't tremendously striking, but the moment you add Meztli, those who have actually seen them are immediately able to give you quite accurate directions.

Unsurprisingly, lizardfolk aren't common, even here. If she really comes from Lustria, as she probably does, it means she covered an impressive distance that would take years on foot. Fortunately, there's other means of transportation, from boats to horses and so on.

When you do meet them, you're right in front of the entrance to the military part of the encampment, with some much-needed breathing room in between to allow a certain distance so that the royal soldiers aren't forced to immediately mix with much less organized people. They are walking away from there just when you arrive.

“Oh so you are here!”, he announces as he sees you, “I was wondering why I didn't hear about you, thought my daughter would have left more of an impression”.

“It's a big place”, you shrug.

“For you”, he gives a smug grin, “You've never been in Prontera, have you? The lady next to you has, I bet”.

“Born and raised there”, Bryld answers with a slight puff of her falsely modest chest.

Faito!

"Hey dad, teach me how to fight", you ask with a bright smile

He clearly did not expect such a question out of the blue, and he gives you an odd look, "Did something happen?".

"I'm preparing for my next expedition", you explain, "And I started recruiting some adventurers, we're going out to explore the untamed wilds and I thought we'd be safer in numbers. And also if we were accompanied by strong, competent folk. But I also don't want to have to rely on them all the time".

"Well I can't say you're wrong about that", he scratches his head. He has switched to a practically sleeveless vest, which better shows his still bulging muscles despite the fact he's clearly a middle-aged man, "But it's not an easy thing to go about. The most important thing, however, is to make sure you travel with people you can trust".

"Well of course", you mutter. Even a child would have known that.

"It's not so easy to judge people. First impressions can be misleading. People change under pressure, especially under threat, and even more especially when their life is on the line", he sounds really serious, "There's precious few people you can trust to keep their cool in such situations. They are more precious than any treasure you may lay your hands on".

"Even more of a reason to rely on myself, no?", you suggest.

"Just what do you think, that you can go ask someone to teach you how to fight and expect to learn overnight?", he chuckles, but Meztli is giving you her usual look... While slowly shaking her head. It's almost imperceptible, but it's alarmingly expressive for her standards, "It's not like learning a cooking recipe, you need to train your body to do things it never learned to do, and to deal with pain, and the constant threat of death".

"It's going to be a much more serious threat if I don't learn anything, though", you reason.

"It's going to be a much more likely event if you think you can tackle a challenge you actually can't... Look, you're only exploring, right? Running away is the best option you have when facing danger", he adds in a much more serious tone, trying to make sure he conveys that, "Especially if your most likely encounters will be with beasts or territorial creatures. They will hardly give chase, not to a group of people. Besides, if you have adventurer escorts they'll protect you just fine".

You give Bryld a brief look, and she makes that face that says she knows how you feel but also can't really argue against what your dad is saying.

“Let's not just stand here”, he then says, pointing to the quite long clearing between the end of the military camp and the beginning of the civilian one, “Let's sit over there, I'm tired of walking around in a town with no chairs”.

This, you absolutely cannot argue with.

A 10' pole and some rope is hella handy.
>>
"How big should my party be?", you ask after you sit down. You can't help but notice that your dad is the only one in the group without a tail. You wonder if he's feeling kind of left out, "There's six of us right now".

"Six is a good number", he reasons, "Oh wait, you and your friend here are noncombatants right? It wouldn't hurt to add a seventh- Ah, nevermind", he chuckles, "Sorry, I was think of traditional adventuring. No, I think your group is fine as it is".

"Really?", you arch your eyebrow.

"Really", he insists, "If you're not hunting monster dens or ancient ruins for treasure you probably don't even need to fight for it, and even then it's preferrable to just avoid combat unless you absolutely have to".

"I thought fighting was a much more... How to put it", Bryld looks at you for inspiration, "... Important part of adventuring?".

"Ideally, you should aim to get all the riches without shedding a drop of blood. At least that's how I was raised, but kids these days...", he shakes his head with a smile, "My point remains that if you're explorers and you managed without a dedicated frontline fighter until now... Chances are you probably will survive again".

"Well we've been kind of lucky until now", you explain, "And not in very dangerous places".

"Or maybe you've been smart and careful and avoided trouble since you knew very well you couldn't handle it", he argues, "Being cocky is the main cause of death for adventurers, I'd rather that not happen to you".

You give Bryld a look and then decide for a change of pace, "What kind of people should I take in my party?".

"Well at least one magic user is almost mandatory- Yes I know they are exceedingly uncommon, but I assure you that nearly all of them are in the adventuring business", he instantly adds, "You already got yours covered though so that's fine".

"Actually we found another wizard", you announce.

"Oh?", he blinks, surprised, "Two magic users? I don't know", he grimaces, "That could be... You usually don't take more than one".

"Why?", Bryld wonders.

"Because magic users are dangerous, eccentric, dangerous, unpredictable and most of all dangerous. Did I mention they are dangerous?".

"Yes, dad", though thinking about Tahenohan she's more eccentric than anything. Okay, maybe her necromancy antics could be considered dangerous in a way...

"Seriously, between the Ether wind being as unpredictable as it is, spells being so hard to control and wizards being so eccentric... I don't know, I'd be worried about the collateral damage. It may also be a bad idea to be flashy at some times, and magic users tend to be quite flashy”.

“Well we don't think it'd be nice to go back and tell her we don't need her any more at this point”, Bryld remarks.

“No, but... Just stop at two okay?”, your father smiles, “Any more and it'd be a disaster”.

>>
"What kind of equipment should I bring?", you ask, getting down to the most practical issues.

"Mh. It pays to be well stocked in food and curatives", your father reasons, "You never know what you might catch, and you must make sure that your wounds don't get infected. Even stupid cuts you get with a thorn may be dangerous when you don't know just what you might have hit".

"I think Carrera's already taking care of that", Bryld reminds you. That was indeed what she claimed she would do. So that's one less thing to worry about.

"Most importantly, bring ropes. Stout ropes that will hold even against the harshest of weathers. You'd be surprised at how much use you can get out of a rope. Same goes for a good knife. But no weapons that you're not absolutely confident with... And that means no weapons at all for you". He even points at you specifically.

"Come on dad I'm not a little girl any more", you frown.

"Well I wasn't around when you were so I have to make up for the lost time", he smiles, "But seriously, don't go about wasting money on a fancy blade, you'll cut nothing but yourself with it. And remember what I said about not getting cocky, I've seen too many people get cut down thinking they could do something just because they had something sharp in their hands", even Meztli nods sagely at your father's words. That is, in fact, quite telling.

"Alright alright we got the message now stop it, okay?", you sigh. Even if he has good intentions, he's being a little too overbearing. You weren't planning to just throw yourself into the fray with nothing but a loincloth and a dagger held with your teeth, "Any non weaponry related equipment I'm missing?".

"I'd say tougher clothes but with the place being so hot I don't think that's a good idea", he chuckles, looking at his own arms, then at Meztli, "You come from a place that's a lot similar to this one, what do you say? What should they wear?".

She looks back at him, then at the two of you, then she shrugs. "Nothing", she mutters. It's been so brief and with such a low volume, you still can't say you have an idea of what her voice sounds like.

Then again your father should've known better than to ask the topless girl about what to wear, other than some cheap jewellery over otherwise bare breasts.

"Well your skin's tougher than ours", he points out, and you have to agree with him, especially when he smiles at you, "I'd not recommend going topless in the jungle, the amount of things you can get scrapes or cuts from is higher than you think".

"That's the part I have experience with", you remind him. You luckily didn't ruin your precious clothes... Much, but you already knew you should invest in something more professional at your first opportunity.

“There's not much else to say then”, he shrugs, “Be careful, be smart, you'll be fine”.

"I've been meaning to ask for a while, but..." and you point to the various stone and metal necklaces that partially cover Meztli's breasts, "What do these jewels stand for, Meztli?".

It's not the sudden change of topic that made the atmosphere feel weird all of a sudden, but rather her prolonged silence, weightened by her firm stare. Only after you've had ample time to wonder whether you just inadvertently insulted her she does provide an answer, "... You're the first one to ask in a while".

Well, not really an answer, but she at least acknowledged your question. She fidgets a little with the decorations, until you realize she's actually running her fingers along apparently identical and random patterns who are, instead, nearly vowen in a precise order, "These quartz show my tribe of origin and place in the family. Second daughter. The peridots indicate my path of life. Warrior. And the cat's eye hanging here is to show I have a partner".

It takes just a few moments for Bryld to process that and then blurt out, "So you two ARE married!".

"Well well well it's nothing so... Official", your father chuckles.

"Are you saying your feelings for me are lies?", she keeps her modest, almost mumbling tone as she slowly turns just enough to stare at him.

"N-no! Not at all!", he is quick to answer and even quicker to smile reassuringly, "I just said it was... Well, there was no ceremony".

There is another long moment of awkward silence before Meztli relents her stare. "We do not share the same customs in terms of mating ceremonies. Besides, a celebration for two of this kind is pointless. Statements are more important. Statements in regards of who is your mate".

"I take it you're quite monogamous", Bryld then comments, apparently quite interested.

"What woman isn't?", Meztli asks with a considerable frown, "I do not understand how anyone could think of sharing a mate with someone else".

Feeling a potential danger incoming, your self-preservation instincts kick in and you intervene, "Oh, so is the necklace complete now? I mean do you keep carrying that for life?".

"It can change", she slowly explains. Her tone is, in fact, a little strange to hear. Her voice is both deep and raspy and her pronounciation is strange indeed, with some clicking noises and less sliding on the 's' than you somehow expected, "I might add more precious gemstones for special recognitions. Or more quartz stones, here, next to the cat's eye. One to the left for each boy, one to the right for each girl".

And there she goes stepping on potential trouble again. Your dad's face is clear enough on that topic. But Bryld doesn't seem to think that way and just keeps being curious, “Oh, what about the copper studs? What do they mean?”.

Meztli blinks, “That's just for decoration”.

Bryld looks disappointed.

You couldn't have received a better hook if you begged for one.

"Say dad", you put your best pleading daughter face on, "You know what I always, always wanted?".

"Stop it".

"Some little brothers and sisters to dote on, I was always so lonely back in the orphanage!", that's not strictly true, well you did feel lonely but for entirely different reasons, not because you didn't have other kids to bond with, "It would make me really, really happy!".

"Stop it damn it!".

"I promised my mother I'd give her at least four grandchildren", Meztli adds. With her tone it's hard to tell whether she's participating in the bullying or she's actually dead serious, "It would be a waste if I survived battles for nothing".

"Hey, hey!", dad goes on the defensive, "Put yourself in my shoes, okay?".

"What's with your shoes?", she goes, with that fixed stare of hers again.

"I'm just saying I'm not a carefree youth, not...", he throws you a very quick glance, "... I still have to amend for having missed a daughter of mine growing into a fine lady all by herself!".

"Stop blaming yourself already", Meztli nearly snaps, her voice is nearly unchanged but her brows take a sharp turn towards each other, "Besides she's an adult, she doesn't need you to raise her".

"Well she grew up fine so no worries!", Bryld smiles in an open-hearted attempt to cheer your father up. She's also trying not to laugh, but you can tell from the way the corners of her mouth quiver that she's having a hard time.

"I-I still think we should be a bit more careful about this", he insists, "Besides I'm not twenty any more, you have to consider how old I'll be when... You know, when our... Kids...".

"What's the problem?", she blinks, "Even if you die you have a daughter that can take care of them. She said she wanted siblings to dote on, right?". You totally did, and no amount of denial will make up for that, "Besides you're not going to die anytime soon, you're quite healthy. Especially in bed".

Okay that was something you did not need to know. Even Bryld rears back at the awkwardness. Sure, you're both adults and everything but he's still your dad damn it. Then again it's kind of your fault for expecting a sense of shame from a woman that traipses around topless.

“My dear”, your father sighs, looking at you, “If you ever go with a lustrian, be prepared to hear them talk about sex in the most inappropriate moments”.

Meztli frowns but says nothing, Bryld is blushing quite hard and pretending she didn't hear anything. And failing.

“It's okay dad, it's not like we didn't know after all”, you concede.

You still didn't need that much information, damn it Meztli. Well at least she's going to give you siblings in the near future so that's something, you guess?

“Can I call you mom?”, you ask, just to make sure.

"SO", you clap your hands to stop the akwardness from permeating the air around you, "What are YOU doing here, dad?".

"Oh? Oh!", after some initial flatfootedness, your father latches on your saving grace and is hoisted back to safety, "We just signed up to help with the Reconquista. We're adventurers after all but we're not too good at exploring, and the soldiers need some specialized help in facing the kobolds up North".

"Are you going up to fight them?", you're not sure whether to feel concerned or not. Your dad does look like a really strong man, and Meztli doesn't look like a pansy at all, but still... Like he said, fighting is always dangerous.

"Eventually, I guess that's the idea. Their presence doesn't make the area very safe", he explains, "Besides, they're sitting on our main source of wood, meaning we cannot really build anything. No palisades, no towers, no structures of that kind at all. Well of course we can get wood from somewhere else, but the bigger jungles are much farther south, closer to New Royo". You know that very well, you've been there, and they, in fact, suffer from no amount of wood shortage, "Until they get their situation straightened and start some serious woodworking and trading, Maner's demand will remain unfulfilled".

"They set up a lumbering camp before", Meztli adds, "It was destroyed, the people slaughtered, and the kobolds then attacked en masse".

Your father sighs, "You can see why they're building a punitive force now, right?".

Bryld gives you a very, very concerned look, "We're not going North anytime soon, right?", she asks, though that sounded like an order.

"It might not be very safe", you concede. You really don't want to encounter the wrong kind of monsters, you've been lucky until now but you guess, and you shouldn't be very surprised, that not all of them are friendly, regardless of your affiliation with Ishtar.

"I'd recommend staying away from the northern jungle for the time being", your father agrees, then gives a cocky smile, "Let us show them we mean business first. Then, when it's safe, I'll make sure to tell you first, okay?".

"What happened to not being cocky, dad?", you remark. But he just laughs.

"We probably should inform the others that we won't be going North. I don't know if they were preparing for that specifically", Bryld notes. It's not an unreasonable suggestion, but you don't know what is really going to change, unless Carrera knows something about that area and said place is so specific that she needs to select her equipment carefully because of that.

But telling them would be nice, yes.

“Well, we're leaving then”, you announce as you get up, “We still have preparations to do”.

“Stay safe”, your father recommends as he sees you off.

Didn't we already chat to Bryld about monogamy? She said she wanted monogamy for any serious relationship as I recall, for now at least.

Some events might make similar questions produce either different or (most likely) more detailed answers.

I suppose that's fair, might as well tag on myself then.

You should start warning your colleagues, as Bryld suggested. Might as well start from Parvaneh, who you presume is closest and also happens to be the easiest to find given her unique appearance.

But before going you have to tread on a topic you've already touched before.

"Say Bryld, are you monogamous?".

She snorts in surprise first, then just chuckles, "Pff, did your mom's stance scare you?".

"Hey come on, remember how awkward our first time's been?", you smile over such memories, "You know I care a lot about other people's feelings".

"Yes, you do. Even though you bully them a lot", she snickers, "But seriously I don't share her stance... Well, okay, I do in a way. I mean if we were a couple, I mean a couple couple, like if we actually married and planned to have children... Then yes, I would be mighty pissed if you just bedded another woman. Or man. Or whatever", she shakes her head, "But well... You know...".

"Oh I know", you smile and nod.

"I didn't ask for you to... Me", she absolutely forgot a verb and even the "me" part was barely mumbled, with an evident trace of blushing on hr face, "... Without knowing what I was getting into. I mean you were planning to take my virginity with a threesome and... To be honest, I wouldn't have hated you if you did".

You raise your eyebrows, "You lewd rabbit!".

"I'm not saying I longed for that!", she immediately gets on the defensive and turns beet red, "I just said... I wouldn't have hated you! I'm... Open-minded, see!", she takes a deep breath, "So... Right, even if right now we stay like this... It's fine".

You walk alongside her for a few moments, staring at her. You've taken a side route along the outskirts of the camp so you don't talk about your sex lives in the middle of a crowd, that is likely to have several young children in, "Hey, are you saying you like me just for my dick?", you tease her.

"N-no!", she goes, then looks down, then forces herself to look at your face instead, "I mean I like it but- Oh don't make that cocky face now!".

"You lewd rabbit".

She grumbles, stiffens up, and then relaxes, "Look, all I'm saying is... I enjoy staying with you, I find sex to be a quite enjoyable experience, I still don't know you so well after all so I can't say if I want to spend my life with you, you know?".

You nod, "I get what you mean". It's really quite easy to understand, after all.

She nods, giving a sincere smile. Her relaxed, friendly expression brings a warm and somewhat fuzzy feeling to your chest, along with some body heat as she hugs you, throwing her arms around your neck and resting them on your shoulders. "But if you knock me up I will put a leash on your dick".

"Let's make sure that doesn't happen, then", you smile back at her. Fortunately, it's not hard to prevent unwanted pregnancies. Thank the human genius for that.

And this is it for Episode 62!

Sorry for the late start, I came back home later than I expected and had some things to take care of.

I shouldn't have problems in the near future, not of this kind at least. Hopefully. I might even switch days though that's still up in the air and depends on still uncertain circumstances. I'll give you a notice on Twitter should that happen, though, so don't worry.

Thank you again for participating and bearing with me for sixty two episodes. See you next time!
