In the late seventies through the early nineties, drug violence in South America only continued to escalate. A successful revolution by the IRA in Ireland encouraged similar revolts in central Africa that devolved into decades-long civil wars, and a USSR faction in the Russian government. Human trafficking for both the organ and the sex trades exploded between south-east Asia and eastern Europe. In the face of such chaos, government run militaries and agencies were too caught up in red tape to be effective in combatting these threats. Traditional armies abdicated their throne as international super-powers, and turned it over to the world of private military contractors.

Thirty years later, the private military industry is a widely accepted fact of life, a necessary evil for the security of the world. While many people in the civilized world resent these men for what they represent, they are also aware that they need them, lest the world fall into the hellscape that it was once again.

You are Jan Kowalski, a Polish special forces operator turned private military contractor. In return for cash and other liquid currency, you, and men like you go places national militaries can’t, and that local police forces won’t.

Last time, on Contractor Quest: You went to a club, got laid, and teamed up with Solomon on a group he put together for a tech companies' tournament.
>>
You turn to Solomon, and find him focused solely on a woman in a blue dress.

“Everything okay, Hyun,” you ask, fairly sure where this is going.

“That’s Clara Baker. They got Clara Baker to come to this thing,” he said, his eyes never leaving the blonde woman. You have to admit, you’re having a hard time taking your eyes off of her, too.

“Solomon, who the flying fuck is Clara Baker,” you ask, trying to break him from his trance.

“Oh, you know, only the most decorated Olypmic sharp shooter in history. The woman outshoots Marine Recon and Navy SEAL snipers, dude. It’s insane. If she’s here, we’re really going to have to stay out of the open. I’m pretty good with a rifle, but I don’t have shit on her. She’s good enough to have two of us down before we even hear the first report.”

Well, that makes things interesting. Now, not only do you have to worry bout Williams running round with that damned Vector of his, every time you’re in view of an upper floor window might be the end of this little tournament for your team. Not to mention, it looks like she’s already got Solomon tied up somewhat. The man is looking so longingly, you’d might think he was a kid in a pet store window instead of a trained killer.

>Fantastic. Just fantastic.
>Wanna go talk to her? She’s alone.

You rolled your eyes. You didn’t realize snipers had fanboys, but here you are. Solomon drooling like a cartoon wolf over Jessica Rabbit, you couldn’t stand to see such a pathetic sight. Thus, you aren’t entirely sure why what came out of your mouth next, did.

“Well, she doesn’t look like she’s with anyone. Want to head over?”

Hyun snaps you a look, but almost immediately regained his composure. “Well, I mean, it might be a good idea to get a read on her. Never know what she might have planned for tomorrow.”

You give him a sarcastic ‘uh-huh’, and begin to walk over with him. She smiles politely as the two of you sit down across from her.

“Ms. Baker,” Solomon started. “I didn’t realize you’d taken into the contracting business.” You were surprised he wasn’t stuttering.

She gave a short laugh that was, admittedly, adorable. “Oh, I haven’t. I was offered a position as a… Game changer, we could say. A wild card. I’ve already been here a few days, taking crash courses in combat shooting, hide selections, that kind of stuff. Turns out I have a knack for it. Who might you gentlemen be?”

“I’m Solomon Hyun,” he starts, surprising you with his calmness, “and this is Jan Kowalski, of Impact! Solutions. Let me just say, I’m a huge fan. I dreamed a long time about shooting in the Olympics, but sadly, I’m much more effective on… well… moving targets, shall we say. Better under stress.”

“Well,” she says, giving him a small smirk, “I’ll be sure to put you under plenty of stress out in the field tomorrow.”

You see Solomon’s brain short circuit for a moment as he tries to figure out if that was flirting or a threat.

You don’t want the poor guy to blow this. Better step in and wing-man this up.

“That may not be a good idea,” you say, trying to buy Solomon time to get his shit together. “Wouldn’t want Combatix’s ace to get put down too early, would we,” you finish, a hand on Hyun’s shoulder.

Her eyes snap back to you, questioning. “So, you think he’s got a chance at getting me out there, do you?” There was an underlying question, there.

“Well, I’d certainly do everything I could to help him,” you return, giving her a smirk of your own.

She turns slowly back to Solomon, looking him up and down. “I’m not entirely sure that he’d need anyone’s help.”

You can tell when you aren’t needed. If Hyun isn’t back online now, he never will be. You pay a passing bartender, and set two beers down on the table. You give him a nod of good luck, and turn back to the bar at large. Not much has changed. Williams is still at the bar, chatting with the tender, and there are three or four groups of contractors at various tables. There also sems to have been a tech team for Combatix that arrived while the two of you were talking to Clara.

Hey, if you’re at a conference of the biggest battle-tech company in the world, you might as well try to dig something out of their eggheads. You wander over, and take a seat at their table.

The four of you do the typical polite introductions, and they buy you a drink.

“So, think you can give me a little heads up on what we’re dealing with tomorrow?”

One, Mark, you think, starts speaking. “Oh, real cutting edge stuff. We managed to-” is as far as he managed to get before he gets an elbow in the ribs from a colleague. The elbow-er turns to you.

“Sorry, man. Company policy. Everyone is supposed to get all the information tomorrow, at the same time, to avoid unfair advantages. You don’t have to wait too much longer, though. The briefing is at 10 tomorrow morning.

“Alright, that’s fair,” you start. “So, what about stuff already on the market? I’ve been using one of your guys’ holographic red dots, and man, I can actually hit stuff now. It’s crazy the difference those things make.” That’s not entirely true, but it doesn’t hurt to butter up the folks that make your life easier.

“Oh, that’s great, but we’re more of a drone team,” the first one began, starting to pick up. “The smaller, more expendable stuff, not the armed mechs. We just released the DT-300 a few days ago, and so far it’s doing pretty well. You should consider picking one up. Definitely safer than stick your head around a corner to see what’s going on.”

Definitely. You had a bit of experience using small personal’s in Poland, but haven’t had the cash, the time, or the need to pick one of your own up with Impact!. Could be worth your time, though, especially as your missions get harder.

You tell them as much, and they start talking about the intricacy of using, repairing, and maintaining a personal drone. Enough, in fact, it’s a pretty good refresher course, and you gain a point in your hardware skill.

start asking questions about other kinds of gear, think about stuff that we may encounter tommrow, then ask along similar themes that way we are not asking for what we may see but we may hear about stuff they are exited to show the world and some of that stuff may be relevant to us. It lets them lead the conversation into what we want, classic diplomacy let them lead into your own questions as if its their own thought... Also Drones team...oh dear eyes in the sky tomorrow and more.

“So, anything else new up-and-coming that you are allowed to share with me?”

“Eh, just the usual. A little better mechs, a little faster drones, and always a little closer to cybernetics, for whatever that is worth nowadays. Most of what you guys will be playing around with tomorrow will be open to the industry as training equipment. They don’t really let the teams discuss progress together too much, though, so afraid we can’t tell you the nitty-gritty on what other teams are working on. Some of them aren’t even in Texas.”

So, really just the usual, then. Mechanicals are always getting upgraded. Stronger materials, longer battery life, faster mobility. On top of that, it seems like every other month there’s a news report about a ‘breakthrough in cybernetics’, and it’s starting to get a little old, seeing as they don’t even have anything more than prototypes or theories.

You buy them all a drink to thank them for their time, and get some contact info out of them. You give them a small wave as you walk over towards the bar, where Colt Williams is sitting.

If there was ever a dynasty in the private military industry, it was the Williams Family. Colt is already making a name on his own, but his father Dominic was a legend in his own right, and started, owns, and runs WarHorse Tactical. His grandfather, Jeremy, was one of the first to bring the industry into a new golden age, and the day he died in a motorcycle crash in Italy is still a sort of unofficial day of mourning for most contractors.

Colt, in the public eye, at least, was a truly wholesome person. One wife that there are never scandals about or rumors over, and three kids that he talks about whenever he gets the chance.

You saddle up on the bar next to him, and introduce yourself.

“So, are you going to be out there tomorrow,” he asks, trying to get a feel for the opposition.

“Yeah, one of the guys from Impact! Got drawn to pick a team, so here we are. How about you?”

“Yup, I got here on straight invitation, though. Figured that was kind of cheating, so I’m playing lone-wolf out there. Would have felt wrong, you know?”

You know. Any team Colt put together from the cream of the crop over at WarHorse would have wiped the table with just about anyone. Seeing as he didn’t get in through the lottery, there would been a lot of gnashing of teeth when the WarHorse teams kicked everyone’s ass like they were going up against booties.

“Personally, no. But a lot of the guys at the company have. If you want to get me you or your handler’s contact info, I can probably get you a handful of names and companies that would be a good start.”

You buy him a beer for the time, and start for the door. You catch Solomon’s attention, and point at your fake watch, to remind him not to be out too late. He waves off your worries, and goes back to talking to Clara, who seems to be enjoying herself. Good for him.

You wake up the next morning to the sounds of someone getting ready. It’s Cooper, stepping out of the shower.

“You’re the only one up,” he says. “Looks like you get first dibs at the shower now.”

As you step out, you find the rest of the guys getting dressed or waiting for the shower, including Solomon. You hadn’t really expected him to wake up here.

“She’s not like that,” he says in response to your questioning look. “Honestly, neither am I, so that all works out fine. She’s cool, though.”

You congratulate him, and continue small talk until everyone’s ready. You make your way down to the event center, where about 200 contractors are sitting on folding metal chairs. A few technical people are wandering around, and milling about on the stage with some sort of large, curtained centerpiece. Looks like they’ll be unveiling a pretty big deal for this.

You take your seat, and wait for the show to begin. You don’t have to wait long.

“Ladies and gentleman,” says the business-suited man on the stage. “You have been invited here today to help us test out the newest, coolest, and most top of the line training equipment on the market. Years of research and millions of dollars have gone into this product, and we hope it’s worth every penny. May I present to you,” he goes on, grabbing the black curtain in the middle of the room, “The Combatix Combat Simulator Suit, or the CSS.”

He pulls down the curtain to reveal what looks like a drysuit with faint lines crisscrossing it, and a clear, plastic facemask.

“This innovative suit is the next level in combat simulation. No longer will your opponents be held to their honor on being hit. The CSS can calibrate exact damage that would be done in a combat scenario, and a thin layer of ferrofluid within the suit will slow, limit, and change movement based on the anticipated wound. Veterans the world over have compared it to actual wounds received in the field. Get shot in the arm? That arm no longer works as well as the other. Experiencing blood loss? The fluids tighten the body, making movement more sluggish and difficult. It will fit seamlessly under any clothes worn in a combat environment. Under-powdered, rubber bullets will be used, but other options, such as lasers, are in development as we speak. Thank you for your time, and if you could follow my assistants to the armory, we’ll get you suited up, and loaded out, and get you out to the field.” He leaves the stage, and the people milling about begin directing foot traffic towards the proper areas.

Once you are suited up, you are handed a vest similar to your Improved Tactical Outfit and a pair of grenades marked ‘SIMULATION’, then ushered into the armory. Nearly any weapon you can imagine is in there. Grenades, rifles, shotguns, pistols, machine guns, even melee weapons like machetes, knives and tomahawks, though the edges are dulled. You are told to take your pick, and load into your team’s van for transport.

>Choose, by name, one long gun, one pistol, and one melee weapon, as well as any accessories.

Pretty much this, but with grenades instead of knives.
>>
With all that’s on the line, now isn’t really the time to be trying new toys. Leave that to when it’s just your life, not money or publicity.

You grab a G36 and a G19 from the wall, and put a mock-kabar on your belt. You snag a red dot sight and a suppressor from the accessories section, and meet your team in your van. There are two Combatix employees with you, one driving, one talking.

“Okay gentlemen. The playing field is a 4 mile by 4 mile urban grid. All buildings are accessible. Keep the face shield on at all times. These are underpowered, rubber bullets, but they’ll still ruin an eye or knock out teeth. Tampering with your suit in any way is grounds for immediate disqualification. Looting defeated opponents is allowed. Only sanctioned weapons are to be used. Under no circumstances are you to use a personal blade, or environmental weapons such as bricks, stones or logs. Communication is allowed between team mates, but to no outside individuals. All teams are being dropped at pre-designated spots, and the last team standing is the victor. Alliances are allowed, but prizes will not be split. Only the last team with members on the ground will be rewarded. This process may take several days, and there are caches of food and water on the premises. Eating and drinking are the only time the face shield is allowed to be detached. Are there any questions?”

>Questions?
>>
>>144995
Can we gun-butt people?

Jonas pipes up. “Are we allowed to melee with the firearms? ‘Gun-butt’ as it’s called?”

The techie makes a questioning face and searches through a rule-book. “The official rules state that as long as it is neither gratuitous nor unnecessary, it will be allowed. It should, however, be a last resort to avoid risking internal injuries.”

Jonas nods, and goes into thought.

The van stops about half an hour later, and you wait inside until a text gets sent to the assistant who spoke to you. He kicks you out, and they drive off.

“Well,” Solomon starts. “We can lie low, wait for the fighting to pick up then die down, and take out the stragglers. Or we could go out there and get into right now. Up to you guys.”

“That’s a good point,” Cooper says, rubbing his SAW. “The more we take out, the better we look.”

“Okay then, it’s a plan,” Hyun says, pulling out a map. He points roughly in the south-east corner. “We’re here. We have no idea where anyone else is, but we’re in the ‘residential’ section. You pull back into the factory, and Solomon draws up a plan. Cooper will set up in cover to lay down suppressive fire, you and Arne will flank around to an exposed side, and Hyun will try to take out a leader from the upper floor with Jonas covering him.

You and Arne sneak around the side beautifully, totally unseen. When Solomon gives the cue to open fire, you open up, putting three rounds into the chest of the patrolling man. Arne and Solomon both miss, their shots going wide or high. Cooper really puts the rounds down, taking one man out and keeping the others pinned behind cover. With is rubber bullets, he won’t be chewing it up, but he’s certainly discouraging any curiosity.

Arne pulls a grenade from his vest, and you make sure to let him know to make sure no one can throw it back. He simply chuckles.

He pulls the pin, and counts to something in his head. He tosses it, and it denoates as it hits the ground. One man crumples, and the two others swear, being injured. They retake their positions, their suits obviously slowing them down, and return fire.

One man doesn’t stand a chance of hitting anything, blindfiring out of cover over his shoulder. One man risks the suppression, and takes an aimed shot. It doesn’t hit, but you could swear you heard it whizz by, even through the plexiglass facemask.

>Round 2, over
>Arne: 1 kill, 2 wounds
>2 opponents left, wounded and suppressed. Add +10 DC to hit.
>Cooper only has about 2 rounds left of ammunition

>Flank again

>Try another grenade. Whose?

Might as well flank. It looks like they won't be hitting anytime soon.

Flank again and execute these two with some fine rifle work.

You and Arne flank around while Cooper keeps laying down fire, and Solomon tries to line up a shot. You and Olafsson get into position and fire. You get a man in the stomach, dropping him, but Arne’s gun jams. He dives into thicker cover, swearing, to try to fix it. The other man, sensing a problem, jumps out from behind his cover to try to capitalize, but is put down by Solomon’s M1A and Cooper’s stream of fire.

>Combat over. You expended 6 rounds of ammo.
>Items available for looting: 4 M4’s, 5.56, 1 Saiga 12, 12 ga, 3 Beretta M9’s, 2 Glock 17’s, 8 grenades.

The five of you meet back up in the factory.

“Well, we can do a few things now. We can get the fuck out of here before someone comes to investigate, or we can set up an ambush if someone comes to take a look. What do you guys think?”

Restock on ammo. Grab all of the grenades.

I'd say that somebody is gonna try to find out where we are, so setting up and ambush would probably be the smart plan.

But at the same time, showing the rest of the world that we are able to wipe the floor with other contractors casually is a good way to get hired for some high-risk high-reward jobs.

Consider me an inbetweener. Also I just noticed that my ID is Hox.

>Set up an ambush
Grab the grenades and half of the M4 ammo for our G36. Maybe grab a M4 Incase Arnies gun jams again.

Now Normally I would say loot everything, including the pistols+ammo. But I want to leave them there to bait others to our ambush.

>>145434
Ambush is good but have one guy run to get ammo and guns.
>>
replenishing ammo and grenades, leaving the rest as bait. Give me 3 rolls of 1d100 to see how good we are at setting up an ambush

You walk over to refill ammo from the ‘corpses’ of your enemies.

“Man, that shit was surgical,” says one of the men from the ground. “So fast, we didn’t have a chance. Good job.”

“Thanks,” is all you manage. It’s a little weird talking to someone you just shot.

You grab enough ammo for everyone and a grenade for Arne, but leave the rest as bait for the ambush.

The five of you set up in what you’re sure would have been an excellent trap, if anyone had walked into it. Looks like everyone close enough to hear your exchange new better than to go poking their nose around. Time to move, apparently.

The five of you unanimously decide to head up to the offices. You imagine that’s where most of the opposition will be, and also probably any lone wolf snipers like Clara Baker.

The trip is pretty uneventful, seeing and hearing nothing on the way up. As you get closer, you can see or hear a handful of firefights taking place within or between buildings, as well as the loud boom of of a large rifle, but you can’t tell where the sound is coming from.

The office district is going to be an interesting theater.

Alright guys, I gotta get to work, then do a 5e game with some friends. Next thread will probably be Satuday, but check twitter. That might change. Thanks for playing, folks, I'm glad we picked up today.

As always, criticism and suggestions are always welcome, see you later. I can do a Q&A from my phone for the next few hours if you guys want.

By the way guys, my old man was in the British Artillary SOP until recently, he always told me regarding snipers, they take the thired or fourth best/highest point, that way they can pick off the scrubs whom go for the best one and second best as more of a set up. That and those whom work largly independently from the standard Sniper Screens often choose location with limited points of access but an easy way out. So combining these points may give us an idea where Sniper lady may be, or at least a few points.
