/qst/ - Quests

Twitter: @BeleagueredQM
Pastebin: http://pastebin.com/FEc6v8FP
Archive: http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/archive.html?tags=Beleaguered%20Prince%20Quest

I'm going to give /qst/ a trial run to see how it goes, so here are the basics if anyone's reading this for the first time:

1- Don't roll unless I tell you to.
2- The target number for all rolls is 4.
3- You roll bigger dice if a task is easy and smaller dice if it's more difficult.
4- Critfails only happen if all dice fail and you roll a 1. They increase the difficulty of your next roll with that ability.
5- Crit successes only happen if you roll a 10, 11, or 12, so they're limited by your dice. They decrease the difficulty of your next roll.

===============

You are Prince Meirion auk Gwyrren, the only sane man in a royal family with dubious concepts of strategy, justice, taxation, and governance in general. You have made it your goal in life to keep your family on the throne and your head firmly attached to your body.

You had a plan. It was convoluted, but it was a plan. You were going to get your corrupt uncle out of his home so professional teams could rob the place and steal a seal of nobility, which you would then return to their rightful owner along with some land in order to keep a merchant conglomerate happy.

Then this happened:

"How dare you put your hands on Eleri! I challenge you to a duel, sir!"

Myrddin is terribly please that you've been challenged to a duel over a woman, while Olwen and Reagan look something between amused and exasperated. The rest of the gathered nobles move into a circle around you in order to watch things play out.

Eleri's face turns pale and she steps in front of you protectively.

"Lord Cadryff -" She calls out to the noble who challenged you.

It takes you a second to place the name. You've never met the Count of Cadryff in person, but you know the previous one died recently, so this should be his son, Andras.

"This doesn't concern you, Eleri!"

No, you're quite certain that this does, in fact, concern her.

"Wait isn't that…"

"I think so…"

"Yes, it looks just like him…"

And now the nobles are whispering about you, which means some of them know who you are. That means you can't back down yourself without losing face.

The Victorious Prince can't lose face.

You sigh and rub your forehead.

>"Okay, let's do this. Myrddin, get my sword."
>[Sovereign/1d8] "Kid, do you seriously not know who I am?"
>[Military/1d10] "Kid, I have killed more people than you've met in your entire life."

Let's not just go killing random nobles, he is young and rash, we can force him to concede once he gets the whole picture.

Also, QM, what is your take on the new board? I kind of miss /tg/ and am unsure if the new player base will be as good.

Also, this place reeks of containment-board

Don't perpetuate the "containment board" meme. It's just the way trolls make themselves feel better about an entire board existing for something they hate. This board was created to benefit us, and I for one appreciate it.
>>
>>13191
I love this board, really hope they don't take it away from us.
>>
>>13175
It's a lot of nice bells and whistles, but nothing really that important. The text formatting tags are useful, but even then, I don't think I'd ever use anything more than italics and maybe bold. Mostly, I just want to check what kind of playerbase I can get here.

>Despite OVERWHELMING disapproval by most of his audience(the only real approval by anti-quest fags and trolls) does it anyways ignoring most people.
>The site is a shitshow from day one, and is still broken is some areas.

This is more or less a containment board. It's basically a rushed ghetto.

I hope you are right, this is my first time on the board after being on /tg/ for years, so I just want to see how this goes.

> the only real approval by anti-quest fags and trolls

a lot of the people here have no fucking clue what went on in /tg/ and have been introduced to questing through the creation of this board

anti-/qst/ fags basically are such whiners, all they do is complain, it's really sad
they just can't enjoy themselves
they accuse everyone else around them of being shills for the opposing team
when in fact /tg/ is just happy to have quests off their board and anti-quest people dont even come here because they dont care

anti-/qst/ers are basically NEET who yell at the mods for every little imperfection of this board and kick and scream and angerjerk each other off because muh precious place in /tg/
muh literate board
muh sensibilities

meanwhile everyone else here is having fun, the board is growing, its being promoted in other boards, the culture is developing, everything is pretty cool. theres different kinds of quests but also quests resembling those that were on /tg/ as well.

this board is great

You take a moment to seriously consider this. On the one hand, this is incredibly fucking stupid, and a colossal waste of your time. On the other hand, it has been a while since you've dueled someone, and you should show off every now and then to remind people of who you are.

What finally clinches your decision, however, is that you are utterly out of fucks to give about anyone else's bullshit. The kid wants a duel? Fine. Olwen is going to complain for days that you never had a duel for her honour, but you'll take out your frustrations on Cadryff.

"Okay, let's do this," you say. "Myrddin, get my sword!"

"Right away!"

Andras Cadryff looks surprised for a moment, as if he really didn't expect you to accept. He recovers quickly and tries to sound as pleased and smug as he can manage.

"Very well, I commend you for your courage," he says. "I will await you in the courtyard. Eleri, accompany me."

Eleri looks at him, and then at you, her face still white as a sheet. After some hesitation, she pulls you back into the crowd. Cadryff walks away, obviously irritated at her display of defiance.

"You can't duel him!" Eleri says. "He's already won seven duels! He's never killed anyone, but I'm afraid that this time…"

"Oh, it'll be fine," Olwen says as she walks over to join you. "This is quite romantic, although I'm quite disappointed that you never duelled anyone for my sake."

You can predict the future now, apparently. You'll be sure to add that to the list of your talents.

"Indeed," Reagan says. "Although I must admit, this is quite a deviation from what you planned. First the time I ambushed you at the inn, and now this. Things always seem to go wrong for you, don't they?" She giggles shamelessly at your misery.

"Please, this is serious," Eleri says, almost begging. "I just… I just wanted to dance with you. I didn't want any of this to happen. You have to go before it's too late."

>"It'll be fine."

>>13231
The major problem I had was when posters couldn't post images because the mods wanted to cut down on reaction images and help QMs to preserve the quest's tone.

I don't give a shit about the tone of the images I use. I picked a bunch of anime pictures from different sources because it was the easiest way to get a lot of pictures of the same character. On the other hand, I love getting random reaction images because it shows people are invested.

It really shows that the people who designed this /qst/ never ran a quest of their own.

Now that the image posting restriction is gone and suptg has the /qst/ archive going, I don't mind giving this place a fair chance.
>>
>>13327
>a lot of the people here have no fucking clue what went on in /tg/ and have been introduced to questing through the creation of this board
Given the rampant shitposting going on I doubt many of them found anything to their liking. This board is tosic.

>when in fact /tg/ is just happy to have quests off their board and anti-quest people dont even come here because they dont care
Have you SEEN the Qst discussion board? The Antiquest fags are literally trolling it and the rest of the board for fun. They visit just to insult and troll.

>anti-/qst/ers are basically NEET who yell at the mods for every little imperfection of this board and kick and scream and angerjerk each other off because muh precious place in /tg/
Yes start the personal attacks because you can't admit this place is a den of shitposting, is broken in several places and was made as a literal rushjob despite overwhelming disapproval.

>meanwhile everyone else here is having fun,
You mean with the shitpost quests, shill quests and
>the board is growing,
It's slow as fuck hell the first quest still ahsn;t been bumped off yet.
>its being promoted in other boards
Oh look excuse to get raided as a new board
>the culture is developing, everything is pretty cool.
We've had people shitposting incessantly trying to stir up trouble and generally be assholes. Not a fun culture to have.
>theres different kinds of quests but also quests resembling those that were on /tg/ as well.
The quest are 9/10s shitposting and 1/10 quests /tg/ was fine holding on it's own anyways.

Furthermore in your diatribe and personal insults, you completely ignored the fact every indicator is pointing to this being a containment board.

>>13356
>"What is this even about anyway?"
>"… you know I'm the second prince, right?"

"What is this even about anyway?" You ask. "If I'm going to duel someone, I'd at least like to know why."

"Andras was my childhood friend," Eleri says. "I told him I'd only marry someone who could dance the Rose Garden Waltz like my parents did, so he started learning how to dance even though he was never really good at it. I never thought he'd take it so seriously. His family is one of my father's backer. My father… this could ruin his career."

Eleri's body is shaking, and she looks like she's about to cry.

"There, there." Olwen pulls Eleri into a tight hug and she calms down. "None of this is your fault, and the person whose fault it is" - she gives you a pointed glare - "is going to take responsibility for his womanizing ways."

"Olwen, please stop saying misleading things," you say. "I believe you're quite aware that I'm not a womanizer."

Her eyes burn with the hatred of a thousand exploding suns. In hindsight, you probably shouldn't have said that.

"Yes, and I'm reminded of it every day for fifteen minutes to an hour," Olwen says. "It doesn't make things any better."

"Do I want to know?" Reagan asks.

"No, probably not," you say. "Anyway, Eleri, you don't need to worry about this or anything that comes of it. I'll be sure to smooth things out."

"It's the least he can do for a woman's sake," Myrddin says. He gives you your rapier, which is still in its sheath. You have no idea how he could have gotten it so fast. "There you go. Try not to embarrass yourself. I'll be taking care of the bets."

"Always glad for your services, Myrddin."

You attach your sword to your sash and walk out to the courtyard where your opponent is waiting. Olwen and Reagan follow you while supporting Eleri.

Lord Cradyff has his own rapier drawn. It's enchanted, but you can't tell how just at a glance.

"So you have come," Lord Cradyff says. "I almost feared you would renege on your promise. Know that while duels of this kind traditionally end at first blood, accidents do happen."

"Oh, you have those here too?" You here Reagan ask.

Your opponent raises his sword in a salute and you do the same.

You knock away the tip of Cadryff's sword and lunge. He falters for a moment before raising his weapon back into a defensive position. He tries to riposte, but you twist your blade around his thrust to point it at his chin and force him to back off.

You don't want to exert yourself more than you have to, but you're not going to let this drag out either. Using Rhithcan's enchantments, you hide the size and angle of the blade and launch quick attacks at Cadryff, hoping one of them will create an opening in his defense that you can exploit.

You maintain your offensive. Cadryff does his best to keep up, but it's clear he is badly outmatched. His stance is slowly collapsing, and he's running out of space to fight with. It's just a matter of time before he slips and you can score a point off him.

Suddenly, Cadryff's sword catches power. It's a neat trick, but it's also a very popular trick. You've seen it many, many times, and you know how to deal with it. You shift your body back and extend your arm to hold the flaming weapon at bay.

You can tell by Cadryff's footwork that he's about to disengage in order to reposition himself and stabilize his stance. His sword will be out of place for a fraction of a second; that's the opening you've been waiting for.

>[Military/1d8] Try to disarm him.

Angry people make poor decisions, and this kid hasn't exactly been a genius thus far tonight. If you just put a scratch on him, he might force you into a life and death battle, but if you knock his sword away, he won't have a choice but to surrender.

Cadryff's sword wavers for a instant. You charge forward and lock your guard against his. He's holding his ground, but he's forced to put a lot of pressure on his ankles. The pain must be excruciating.

You twist your wrist and give a slight upward push. Cadryff tries to match the strange movement and ends up with his elbow and wrist bent at an odd angle. His face is contorted with pain. He's trying to force you back, but he just doesn't have the leverage.

In the end, he's forced to drop his sword. You kick it away as soon as you can to avoid getting your pants set on fire. Cadryff blankly stares at his sword as it flies away and falls to his knees, defeated.

"I… I lost… Why… I just wanted to impress…"

All around you, nobles are exchanging small sums of money. It seems none of them were stupid enough to bet against you in large sums. Myrddin himself collects more than a few purses.

You answer without even bothering to turn around and look at the guy.

" I am Prince Meirion auk Gwyrren, son of King Gerad auk Gwyrren, the Victorious Prince, and second in line for the throne of Gwyrddarfordir."

You expect some sort of apology, or pleas for forgiveness and mercy. You get something else entirely.

"But… that's impossible! Prince Meirion is supposed to be seven feet tall! He wears armour made of bone, and his sword is covered with a hundred layers of dry blood!

What.

That's not even.

Motherfucking.

What.

An awkward silence falls upon the spectators. It's immediately broken when Olwen points at you and laughs so hard it almost looks like her sides are going to explode out of her body. You suppress your twitching brow and keep walking forward.

"Seven feet? HAHAHAHAHAHA!"

Yeah, she's going to be doing that for a while.

"Uhm, your highness…" Eleri shuffles uncomfortably and avoids your gaze. "About…"

"Don't worry about it." You shake your head and cut her off before things become even more awkward. "There's no need for excessive formalities at an event like this."

"If you say so," Eleri says. "Although, this does feel quite… fantastic. Magical, even. I never thought I'd be in this kind of situation outside one of my father's plays. I wonder if that makes me a princess now?"

"I'm so glad you're enthusiastic about your prospects!" Myrddin says as he walks up to you. "Fortunately, while royal titles are carefully regulated, a woman of your talents has several options -"

You cut Myrddin off with a sharp elbow strike to the ribs and knock the wind out of him before he really gets started.

"I'm afraid we need to go now," you say. "Will you be all right?"

"Yes, thank you, your highness," Eleri says. "It's been a pleasure."

"Likewise," you say. "Come on, Olwen. Let's get you back home before you laugh yourself into asphyxiation. Myrddin, don't say anything else."

You pull your two advisors along and leave the party is quietly as possible. Nimue helps you carry Myrddin back to the carriage; he's having trouble breathing.

"I must say, this evening was quite pleasant, even with the complications," Reagan says. "It's a shame I have to leave tomorrow."

"I'm sure you'll have a chance to come back," you say. "Official visits and all that. Hopefully, the circumstances will be better."

"I'll do what I can to keep myself in the meantime," Reagan says.

"Do try to avoid further 'accidents,'" you say. "People are already talking."

"That is the point."

You take the carriage back to the castle and return to your chambers. Reagan and Olwen can turn in early, but you're stuck sitting at your desk until Myrddin brings you news of the attempted robbery.

You wait.

And wait.

And keep waiting.

After a suspicious amount of time, Myrddin carefully pushes your door open and peeks through the crack.

"Your highness, I'm afraid there's a problem."

"Of course there is," you say. "What is it this time?"

Myrddin closes the door and sits in front of you. You both steeple your fingers and stare at each other.

"The Haearnty seal wasn't at your uncle's home," Myrddin says.

"Do we know where it is?" You ask.

"It's being sold at a black market auction tomorrow night," Myrddin says. "One of my guys overheard the guards talking about it. They didn't say anything specific - they probably don't know the details themselves - but the thieves were able to put it together."

"That's impossible," you say. "He would have planned that far in advance. If he knew that much money was coming in, he wouldn't have been willing to sell that forest to me just to get rid of it. He would have hired more guards."

"It's possible if he needs to spend money on something so expensive that he absolutely can't afford to squander his coin on any additional expenses," Myrddin says.

"So my uncle is planning something very big and very, very expensive," you say. "Do we know what?"

"No," Myrddin says. "It hasn't made any ripples yet."

"We're going to need a bigger net," you say. "We've been dealing with threats before they pose a problem, but we're starting to run out of slack."

As impractical as it is to get reports on every little thing, your spy networks' limitations are starting to cause serious problems. If your uncle needs that much money, you should be told about it before he even starts raising funds.

Myrddin shrugs. "There's only so much we can do with your current resources," he says. "But we will come back to that later. For now, we need to focus on getting the seal back. In the meantime, I'll have my people figure out what Prince Aled is up to."

Raiding the auction - legally or otherwise - isn't an option. The security will be tight, and the people involved might run away with the seal at the first sign of trouble. You'll have to get it the old-fashioned way.

>"Fine, we'll just buy the damn seal and get it over with."
>"I'll see if I can find a way to manipulate the bids in our favour."

"I'll see if I can manipulate the bids in our favour, at least."

"That's a quick way to go bankrupt."

"I know," you say. "But all it takes is one or two bids here and there to drive the prices up. If I do it right, everyone else will run out of money before the seal comes up and we'll be able to get it for cheap."

"So long as you're careful," Myrddin says. "And remember to bring your money with you. Those place don't take credit."

"I'm familiar with illegal auctions, Myrddin," you say. "We've run several ourselves."

"There's no such thing as being too cautious."

Myrddin leaves, and you turn the lights off to get a few hours of sleep. It's not enough to feel satisfying and comfortable, but you wake up the next morning rested enough to get the job done.

The first order of business is to see Reagan off. You've also received word that your sister has finally returned from her voyage at sea, but it'll take her some time to get her ships back into port and sorted out. You'll have plenty of time to greet her later.

Reagan sits in her carriage, surrounded by heavily-armed guards. You wonder how she's going to get herself back to Olstren safely, but you trust her judgment.

"I wanted to thank you one last time before I left," Reagan says. "I don't have such pleasant days very often."

"It was the least I could to make up for your loss," you say.

"Are you sure you couldn't do just a little more?"

She leans off the side of the carriage and brings her face closer to yours.

>"Sadly, I can't. Farewell, your highness."
>Kiss her cheek.
>Kiss her hand.

I doubt getting it cheap is gonna be an option.

You gently take her hand and kiss it. It's not what she wanted, but it's close enough and it doesn't violate the standards of propriety. Besides, she's still blushing.

"I suppose that does count as a little more, even if it is too literal for my taste," Reagan says. "Goodbye, your highness. I'll try to visit again as soon as possible."

"I expect the Crown Prince will be marrying fairly soon," you say. "That should give you an excuse."

You haven't had time, to look into your older brother's mystery lover, what with all the other fires you had to put out, but there haven't been any problems either, and that's always a good sign."

"That sounds lovely," Reagan says. "I'll look forward to it."

You watch Reagan's carriage as it departs. That's one less thing you need to worry about it. Now you just need to deal with your sister, your brother, your uncle, your father, that illegal auction, and those merchants. You really hope they won't lose their patience with you.

It's a bit earlier than I'd like, but that's my cutoff point for today's material. The next thread will be Sunday May 1st at around 7PM EDT. You can check twitter for the announcement. I will most probably be running on /qst/ again.

So far, I've got a pretty positive impression of this board. You guys were great and I think the thread was actually a little more active than it usually is over on /tg/. I guess I'll stick with the trial run, at least.

This thread will probably autosage before the next one and I don't want to mix old threads with new ones right now anyway, but I will check this thread every now and then in case anyone has questions.

I'll see you next time. Thank you and good night.

Given board movement and post limit? Could very well be up still by then. Night Boss.

Yes I know Sunday is the first but he could come back in a week and this will still be here.

Actually, I thought the autosaging was still set for 48 hours, but it's actually 72, so this thread would still be there by Sunday. I'll think about whether or not I should keep it or start a new one.
