Guarding St Helena edition

>What is this?
/TG/ DEVELOPED GAME
IT IS PLAYABLE.
EXPEDITION - an ~1870s era, Jules Verne-inspired retro-futurist, underground blood soaked adventurescape.
It is a Skirmish wargame. Two players with their own expeditions, on a hexgrid map, fight each other for victory.
A campaign mode is planned, and currently in the works. (you) are encouraged to contribute.

3 versions of the rules exist, TWO of which have been playtested:
>1e - proof of concept, recently updated with unit stats
>2e - lead by 2e anon, playtests started, ~75% done. Campaign system is developed here.
>3e - Replaced 4e because it died. Spearheaded by 3e anon, needs more playtests, rules present in the doc

>What can I do?
Shitpost, meme, get comfy. Read over the docs to settle in.
Familiarize yourself with rules and plan some playtests.
Contribute if you have ideas. Give feedback on contributions if you don't.

To update on the current work.
I will try to finish USA proper tonight and have it posted tomorrow evening at the latest.
I came across picrel a few days ago and looked through it for inspiration for the campaign system, most of it is weird RPG design I'm not use to but some of the tables might be useful at the very least.

100%. The idea of a Vernian skirmish wargame is fun and all but if it wasn't for the setting that surrounded it and how DEEP it goes I would have lost interest a long time ago.
To the anon who suggested the rifles to be added for the US, did you intend to have the M187X Remington-Lee be a gun with the multi-shot-before-reload rule? I don't think it'd be that much more heavy to track than the Reloads themselves.

Yeah, that sounds about right. The US is the shooty Colonial faction after all. btw, you can put a date for 187X, preferably in the latter half of the decade. Maybe tweak the [Private Purchase} rule to make it cheaper in bulk, too?

Also, how about some more guns?

>Remington Rolling Block
A universal soldier if ever there was one. While a best-selling military rifle outside of its home country, both the Navy and the Governor of New York have ordered tens of thousands of these single-shot rifles to arm their troops. (maybe common in the Mercenary List?)

>Winchester-Hotchkiss Turnbolt Repeating Rifle
The direct competitor to the Remington-Lee. Feeding from a tube magazine and with a unique rotating safety, this rifle was to be adopted by both branches until the Morlock Debacle. Thanks to some well-timed lobbying by Remington, the Winchester-Hotchkiss lost favor in many military circles. Bridges the price gap between Springfields and Remington-Lees.

>Colt Single Action Army
The Peacemaker. The Gun that Won the Frontier. Whatever name you have for it, this single-action revolver has more than earned it over countless expeditions. With multiple barrel lengths, caliber options, and even grip engravings, the SAA can be seen in the hands of nearly everyone from the poorest settler to the Wizard of Menlo. [Private Purchase] lets you tweak one stat.

What really ties it together is the clear inspirations. Agartha, Lemuria, Old Mu, Atlantis, Jules Verne (Hyberborea is the one most far-fetched from its inspiration). All so Chthonic so mystical yet obviously advanced since they are lost ancient worlds build on a belief that man fell from grace. How could all these progenitor kingdoms work together? Well, just make them belong to different layers of an ever expanding abyssal tectonic pancake of course!
Leviathan of Fish and Stone was brimming with creativity, sure, but it always seemed to me like it work more like a collective writing project, rather than a game.
This one though, it always had that potential.

i think these changes are good.
>>92278115
i think most of these changes are good. i really liked my version of Special Elite Bait. i dont mind simplifying it, just dont want to change it too much. the idea is that the military made a deal with the Skinwalkers to eat Officer Bubbles after the job is done, thats why you can control the reveal with him. i also liked that it was an action because its like his job isnt to exist as bait, but he is also trained how to look tasty. the dread and ap rules where neat because it made it so killing him was punishing for your opponent, so he is bait in 2 ways. it also made it so you could feed the Skinwalker early but then your men have to live with the horror of watching Officer Bubbles the beloved be savaged by the Skinwalker. if im in the extreme minority i wont be a hard ass about it, but i would like it to not be changed too much. the rest i agree was too complex and im glad you did me the favor of simplifying it. sorry im sparatic and not as "clean" as usaul right now. travlling and spotty connection. only ever have wifi or time, never both.
>AmExCo
glad you like it! i worry it may be a bit too strong if taken with triassic ranch, maybe not. if needed, the first change i would make is switch Acc and Labor numbers.
do you think we should allow him to take flintlocks and muskets? if we let him, i see it being common to take him with Cobras purely as a tech. that isnt necessarily a bad thing, but it may not be the kinda thing we want. something about card games and war games. i also like how it makes the skinwalkers more skinwalkery and less windigoy. i do want to make a proper wendigo for a campeign serario at some point, so that distiction is important to me.

abolishonists dont have a Hero or Sponsor. George Washington Carver. Tuskegee Institute. worry giving USA too many units. worry about lack of canada rep. Royal Canadian Mountain Police merc. skywhale Floaty Prick.

This is 100% maddened headcanon, but I always figured the Scion was the progeny of Napoleon's encounter with Mother Unknown. Maybe they did the deed while the Shadow Khan watched, maybe they collaborated on some sort of weird science project, maybe they raided an alternate timeline and stole one of Napoleon's kids.
If we wanted to combine that with the inner sun we could give him light and shadow powers with different abilities in each environ. That might be stepping on Malcolm and others gimmick a little bit so maybe just having something where he gets stronger the more well-lit he is. (Sun king jokes may not be historically accurate here but they'll still be made)
>>
>>92287804
>but I always figured the Scion was the progeny of Napoleon's encounter with Mother Unknown.
I had always thought funny to have the idea left that he had gotten her to let them leave by seducing her. MU challenged him to a dual of prophetic insight and eldritch might, something she had never lost to, and he won by making the one move no one would ever think to do, bedding her. I never wrote it in directly but made allusions to it in the Eldest/Kentuckian Rebel story, thought it might be out of character/theme... But maybe not?
>>92287804
>light and shadow powers with different abilities in each environ. That might be stepping on Malcolm
Both Malcolm and Napoleon have a "shadow" theme built-in mechanically, Malcolm is straight up using Obscurity rules, raising Evasion, while La Ombre is shadowy in the sense of terrifying, scary and, once I get to it and update them, Hide actions.
I'm thinking of adding something like
> Pact with the Lemurs : La Ombre Expeditions may spend Silver from their Chest during a Battle to spawn Lemurs under their control. Possibly add something about them having to roll Discipline or go Hostile.
> Pact with the Shapes : La Ombre Expeditions may spend Silver from their Chest during a Battle to spawn Shapes under their control and force Obscurity rules to be used for the turn.
> Pact with the Inner Sun : La Ombre Expeditions may spend Silver from their Chest during a Battle to spawn Anomalies.

But Canada is specifically not in PACT, that's what led to the whole Halifax Entrance Explosion in the first place!
There is definitely room to add more space for Canada in the lore and game however, either in as Brits or as Mercs.
> Sponsor : Dominion of Canada
> You may recruit British Auxiliaries, Low Canada Asbestos Miners and BAP as regular Followers. You may recruit either Abolitionist or Post-Confederates from the US book as Mercs (you cannot recruit both). Any model recruited may be mounted on a Dog Sled.

So far, so good. I think the biggest Issue I have is the presence of percussion-cap firearms, since those were phased out almost completely a few years after the Civil War. My advice is to replace the Bradsburg with the Springfield Trapdoor and the 1860 revolver with the Single Action Army, since that’s what was standard issue. Some bonus rules for the Marines too, since they seem unfinished?

Start of the work on La Ombre!
The book will specify that this is not a faction for Campaign play.
Here's a new version for Napoleon.
Obviously he is a boss, I dumped a lot of special rules on him to represent that. Added Prophet as well as Diplomat but made it so it can only work on Deep models, "untainted" Colonials consider him the Anti-Christ so they would not Parley with him. I reduced his Armour to Colonial standard of 0 and removed 1 Health box from the Limbs to compensate a bit for the added rules. I have no clue if the result is balanced at all, he might be worth something closer to 65-75, but he can still get killed relatively easily if an entire Expedition got to shoot at him.
Mechanically I intend La Ombre to be a Dread Generation, Hiding & Assassination faction.

Also, been wondering something. It would be for long term planning, not something that would start soon, mind you, but if we were to playtest a campaign mode, who here would be interested/capable of playing, and which Faction/Sponsors would you like to play?
This might help me decide how to organize the cleanup.

>I'd be up for playing. Haven't actually played any of the test rounds, so I'll have to learn the rules as I go, but that shouldn't be too hard
This would be ways away, I'm asking so I can try to have more direction to work on the campaign system. We'd have plenty of time to get you introduced. Which reminds me, I need to do the Quick Sheet I promised last thread.
Also, what kind of Campaign would you guys like to play?
> Central objective win con: First one to achieve it wins.
> Central objective clock : First one to acheive this ends the Campaign or triggers a clock to end of Campaign, tally Chest amounts
> Multiple objective : can be either a win con or a clock, but you have multiple objectives and not every player has to go for the same.
> Secret objectives : Players don't know each other's objectives, but may have some clues.
> # of Turns : Campaign ends after a preset number of turns.
Obviously it could be tweaked to have some of these work together.

These two would be cool. I want to compete with other players, even mess with them a little, but I also want it to feel unique beyond the fact we play different factions. Maybe completing the secret objective is a mid-campaign thing and grants you a boon for the late-game if you get it in time.

officer bubbles anon. id play USA because i am most familiar with it, Whalers or Warfare Existentialists because they are cool, Tsardom because i have ideas for it. i favor colonial factions over all. if i where to pick a deep faction, Neanderthal, Sky People, or Lemuria. in that order.
Atlan/Atlantis doesnt do much for me and Mu feels too... immediately important.
>>92306501
Central objective that starts the countdown, Secret objectives that give tons of silver or other benefits.
and or;
we set up a series of scenarios to be played in order, where the players play each side once and the winner is whoever has the most combined sliver at the end of the set of scenarios. get what i mean?
"here is your starting silver, here are the dudes you can buy, here are the dudes your opponent can buy, this is your goal " and the dudes dont have to be perfect reflections of the freeplay versions. then, after that game is played, you switch sides. that whole ordeal would be a "level" of the campaign. a good way to do it would be each player gets a few Secret objectives randomly and picks a few for the whole campaign, these arnt win cons but great boons for certain. maybe the the random options are public and just the selection is private. within a level there is a set objective for each faction that is a win con, or if it is an economy senerio its a central objective that starts a clock.
does that make sense? any good ideas in that mess?
>>

Oh shit I have ideas for them too!
You know how in the lore it mentions they have some sort of scientific university thing in the caves, and how they also ranch mushroom dudes?
Mycologist Unit. He gets Mushroom Unit Friends to grow, control, harvest, spread, etc.
I was also thinking about if we wanted to expand the proposed Okhrana agent side-switching thing so that you could play as a revolutionary group if you wanted. I will admit I'm not well-versed in how active they were in 187X compared to 1917 but I assume there were still some.

Might do lost seer tonite. The unit doc says her thing is buffing fateless so that when they cancel prophecies she steals the prophecy power. That sound good? Maybe it gives her AP, maybe it lets her auto-succeed prophecies.
Also going to let her diplomat really well since that's mentioned in there too.

Done!
Added the Leadership, didn't see any, let me know if I should adjust.
I also added +1 Reload to the Apemen's guns, we can see if that's too much.
Would you mind reposting the image you used for the Fateless?

I didn't use any. There is a jak for the lost seer out there but I didn't make it and don't have it saved

-”Everything is possible”: (2 LP)
Select one unit with Prophecy within 5 hexes. If friendly, clear any tracked failed prophecies and add +1 Awareness to that unit for each prophecy failed for the next two turns. If hostile immediately force that unit to roll as if it failed a prophecy, with a +1 to the roll.
(I.E: Friendly fateless has failed three prophecies. This ability clears the tracked prophecies and gives friendly unit +3 awareness. Or enemy scholar-prophet is targeted and immediately must roll 1d10+1 to see if it degenerates)
-Axle of Fates:
This model may use the “Nothing is Written” ability from the Fateless profile. Additionally, this unit gains 1 LP each time a prophecy is canceled using this ability.
-Flawless Etiquette:
This model may attempt parley with otherwise valid targets who are listed as “Immune to Diplomacy.” Additionally, this model may reroll parley tests.
-Fateless Leader:
You may recruit Fateless as regular troops instead of elite.

This model may be equipped with Lemurian weapons or Alchemical Artefacts.

>COMMENTARY
May God have mercy on my wretched soul for this one. If you’re wondering what’s making me nervous, it’s the fact that Fateless Lemurian units can COUNTER THEIR OWN PROPHECIES. I left that in intentionally so that if you take the lost seer but you’re facing off against someone without prophecy you have something to do. What this all means though is that there is now a list that deploys, rolls a stupid amount of prophecies, cancels them, and then uses that buff to get off a large amount of auto-hit combat prophecies. I think it’s okay though since it would take at least two turns and words that kill is only about as strong as a rifle. Lost seer being able to walk up to an enemy prophet and go “You. Degenerate NOW” is also interesting, but hopefully she’s vulnerable enough for it to be a risk to bring her to melee. Nimble might be a bit much with the high Evasion, but other Lemurian profiles also have pretty high evasion. In a battle against non-prophecy units the strategy would be to treat it like a colonial list with the exception that the lost seer has to keep clearing failed prophecies to prevent the army from degenerating or dying. The diplomat etiquette rule lets you easily regenerate LP against a non-prophecy list but again it might be a little too close-range.
Also, I thought about giving her another LP ability that lets her detect hidden units or something since she has that Vrill Chakra third eye but I think the other stuff gets across "good at prophecies" well enough. We can just say that the third eye gives her nimble since she can dodge bullets before they're shot or something.

We should try and push some playtesting on Prophecies anyways, it would be good to iron them out.
Speaking of which, anyone up for this Monday-Tuesday?

For the longest time the origin of the Emu was uncertain. It is now known that Emu is abbreviation for Epigean Muian, and that what we have been calling birds are in fact more closely related to military Flysaurs. In 1884 the Waitomo Glowworm Entrance was discovered by Sir Laurence Cussen who was knighted for his discovery. the same expedition that discovered the Waitomo Glowworm entrance also discovered why Emus stick their heads in the ground. When Sir Cussen touched the silk of the glow worms inhabiting the entrance and its threshold, a taboo among the natives, he discovered also why Emus bury their heads: Communication. much is still to be learned of Emus- their history, their origin, their biology- but what is known is that they are with out exception, an animal specially cultivated to be the eyes and ears of Mu.

Concerning!
I remember someone pitching that Australia and the areas underneath it are a constant battlefield because of how many Agarthan powers have borders there. Not sure if we ever followed up on the idea.

EST. I can play around my schedule a bit if its this much in advance but at about this exact time would be perfect for me.

Not doing it tonight, but the only two lost men units left are a Libertalian Pirate unit and Rakkad (Not really a lost man unit but I want a Libertalia angle to the faction and he seems like a good fit for a leader)
After that I'll see about knocking out a few more mercs so they have a bigger pool of weirdos to draw from.
Any chart/doc mercs people want to see first? Also any ideas for Rakkad other than letting you wear diving armour and taser bullets?
>>

Honestly no idea. Do we have stats for the shadows yet? That feels like something we might want to get up on for him since I don't think we do.
>>

>Also any ideas for Rakkad other than letting you wear diving armour and taser bullets?
He needs to be designed to be oppressive on water maps, and then we need to not write rules for water maps for at least another month.
>>
>>92328565
Not sure on rules for Rakkad. Captain Nemo doesn't have many strong characteristics that could translate to a tabletop game, but it's been a while since I've read 20,000 leagues. I know he is big on the freedom autism, it's why he built the submarine after all. I should read it again.

You are right I'll get on that first. I thought about giving them a normal Hostile NPC profile last time I did the rulebook but figured they might work better as a conditional rule/scenario thing.

Also, re the cleanup, are Duo(trio?)sicily anon and Tai Pei anon still here? Since these are your designs I'd like your input before changing anything.
>>
>>92330669
We could have them be both a conditional thing (go in unlit area, take damage) AND a unit (sometimes unlit area goes to you.)
Might be a bit complex though.
>>
>>92333223
>We could have them be both
Nah that's fine, I had already something like that in mind! Will get on it.

While I do the Shadows, here's a new version for the Oldest Guard. I remember the one time he was playtested he was thought to be a bit too powerful, so here...
The previous Soupe a l'oignon rule was essentially a better Deadly, so I replaced it with Deadly straight up. I removed the Weapon Training. Gave it Hide to push the faction theme as well.
The Soupe a L'oignon was rewrittten to be a Dread Pump. Thought it would be funny to have a
> "I'm walking in a cave a hundred miles below the surface and suddenly the walls start singing the Chant de L'oignon"
moment.
