/tg/ - Traditional Games

Impending Mu Invasion Edition

>What is this?
/TG/ DEVELOPS A GAME.
IT IS CURRENTLY PLAYABLE.
EXPEDITION - an ~1870s era, Jules Verne-inspired retro-futurist, underground blood storm hellscape.
It is a Skirmish wargame. Two players with their own expeditions, on a hexgrid map, fight each other for victory.
A campaign mode is planned, and currently in the works. You are encouraged to contribute.

3 versions of the rules exist, TWO of which have been playtested:
>1e - proof of concept, recently updated with unit stats
>2e - lead by 2e anon, playtests started, ~75% done. Campaign system is developed here.
>3e - Replaced 4e because it died. Spearheaded by 3e anon, needs more playtests, rules present in the doc

>What can I do?
Shitpost, meme, get comfy. Read over the docs to settle in.
Familiarize yourself with rules and plan some playtests.
Contribute if you have ideas. Give feedback on contributions if you don't.

> TQ 1 : With Mu nearly posted, 2e is near completion on the main factions. Taiping is in the works, Ottomans have been called for, and otherwise the only remaining factions I really want to do are Sky-Clans and Hyperborea. Does anyone else wish to call a faction like Duosicily or Taiping anon did and feed me the info?

> TQ 2 : What are the economic relations between Colonials and Agarthans, and between Agarthans themselves? Most of these factions seems rather at odds with each other...

//Reposting from last thread//
Holy shit I managed to get a lot of shit done today, for a change. I guess it also shows I had badly misjudged how much work there was left to do on Mu since without that I would never have been ready to post it today. As of now I only have a few things left to tweak on it and it will be posted and added to the Mediafire. I have to go eat and take a nap because I'm starting to look like the Husks I posts, and I'll get back to it later tonight. It will be done tonight 100%.
I have also cleaned up the tokens and organized them by faction so that will also be added tonight.
>>90904980
>Once Mu is done that should finish up all the major factions, shouldn't it?
Yes! Jesus fuck I had not even realized it (I mean Italy and Taiping got thrown into the mix early so that's probably why). There's the Sky-Clans and Hyperborea I really want to do, and the rest I think It'll leave to when people manifest interest into the faction like with Duosicily anon and Taiping Anon. Those probably won't have ~20 profile entries like the biggest ones, and if I'm building from stuff given it takes no effort whatsoever.
The counter to the "there is too many darn faction already" question is that we want to generate interest, and having anons participate or direct the creation of a faction will naturally create some attachment, even if its only one person, its one *more* person than before and that's based as fuck each time it happens. So while I don't want to dilute what makes this setting so great, or include something which is retarded or out of theme, I'm leaning toward not setting too many barriers toward faction entry in 2e.
Obviously if you guys disagree I won't force it on anyone.
But otherwise, let me also take this occasion to invite anyone interested in participating/directing the creation of the Husked Ottomans to mention it. There's a few units on the compasses already to use.

> TQ 2 : What are the economic relations between Colonials and Agarthans, and between Agarthans themselves? Most of these factions seems rather at odds with each other...
I like to think the New Mu citystates and the Neanderthals act as the neutral middle ground where factions can meet and trade underground. Maybe they even have embassies in the biggest cities? Fallen Paris is obviously the hub of most colonial ventures, probably a few agarthan shops and such that have moved in, but I think the majority of trade and diplomacy would be conducted in the city states. And it gives Mu an in with the colonials too, to have all their money circulating on their territory...

Old & New Mu done and added to the Mediafire!
Its a pretty complex faction atm unless you just run Saur Knights & Saur Keshiq, but that's because it's lacking a few "generic" commanders, the Khan and Mother Unknown had to be near boss level to make sense.
There's a few rules that are useless atm as well because you won't have the NPC profiles. I'll work on those tomorrow.

>What are the economic relations between Colonials and Agarthans, and between Agarthans themselves? Most of these factions seems rather at odds with each other...
I think it varies on a case by case basis. Atlantis is happy to trade with surfacers, and some agarthan groups like the Sky-clans and certain factions within Lemuria, but definately don't trade with Atlan or Mu. Mu usually just trades with those surfacers who decide their good are worth the cost (in wealth and in other things), while Atlan is too aggressive for trade to be wide-spread. It does happen, but it's very rare, and only really happens with those factions smart enough to keep them at arms length. Lemuria has a habit of following the prophecies in this case. Not always, but often enough. This results in trade with them being a sort of schizophrenic experience

Oh, this kicks ass. It really nails the "lost world" theme.
Anyway, I've made some updates to the Taiping roster. Local Potentate is gone, replaced by a Shadow Minister, and there's also a Hyperborean option to fit with that element of the lore. Some more special rules/abilities have been penciled in.

Anyway, are there any stealth/hiding rules? And what's the time/space scale of a turn/hex?

This game was pretty quick. We got through a turn but then had to fast forward teleport everyone to the center of the board since my opponent was running out of time to play.
>Lemurian Cannon got one shot off, and did really nicely. If we hadn't teleported all the melee units to the board center I think the cannon would have won me the game
>The Priestess is not in fact a melee unit, and I made a big mistake letting her anywhere near the titking
>Golem Slow (Extremely)
>Rockbreakers weren't a hard counter to Atlan, but pulled their weight when buffed
>Opponent and I rolled around ten 9s in five minutes, so clearly messing with fate has consequences.
>At one point I chained the prophet swarms special ability to force a buff through, which ended up degenerating one of them (He rolled one of the previously mentioned 9s after previously failing a different prophecy roll)
>I gave the enchantress a free saber since I couldn't find the tiger statblock (get it? Sabretooth tiger?)
Atlan player had a much easier time figuring everything out compared to the other two since he's an old hand at board games and wargames alike. Once he got Titking into melee he chained the two special attacks and ripped a rockbreaker and the enchantress in two, it was spectacular. Atlan definitely needs an update though, it has some weird holdover rules like stun and two missing units still.

Also, does Vision of Doom ignore the Titanium special rule? We figured it did since it was not weapon penetration. Chaining it with rockbreakers was pretty good when they managed to hit.

>Anyway, are there any stealth/hiding rules?
There's a Hide action going to be added next upload, I'm just letting it sit a while because that's usually how I realize something is dumb.
>And what's the time/space scale of a turn/hex?
Time scale is quick, a crossbow takes 3 AP to reload, most models get 2 AP a turn, so I would say a turn would take a minute or two at most? For space its pretty nebulous, but it would have to be relatively small for facing or formation rules based on adjacent models to make sense
>>90922506
> Rockbreaker vs Titanium King + Immortals
Kek.
Btw I think you aren't gonna get any use out of the Enchantress here. Sabre-Tooth Tiger isn't added yet.
Also, the Golem might not be a great choice. Too slow, and there is nothing in that group to tie up the enemy while it lumbers around.
>Although the slavery stuff weirded him out
For Atlan or for another faction?
Atlan is pretty much an irredeemable evil kingdom, I feel like it would be weird if it didn't have slaves...

I tried to get that point across, but I think he wanted an irredeemable evil kingdom with more non-slave options. People get touchy about that sort of thing, especially where we live, so I don't blame him really.

Yeah I kinda got sweats when I realized that was what your opponent was running. Will definitely do a sweep over older stuff tomorrow in order to put stuff in line. I'm glad you guys still had fun with it.
>Also, does Vision of Doom ignore the Titanium special rule?
Yes. Although its a good point I'll specify it, and that it doesn't remove the (T) either.

It's all good. The enchantress thing was my fault (I didn't notice the armor values until after she was hit) and Atlan did pretty well even with some rules weirdness.

Yeah, I was thinking about 5 to 10 seconds because of the gun reload times (muzzleloader should be about 20 seconds for a well-drilled soldier), but some of the combat engineering stuff is on a very short timescale if that's the case.
Also, here's a better "Tiger of War" portrayal, with a more impressive shield. What resolution are we using for unit cards?

>I really like that, thinking there could be a Campaign Prophecy that works around striking favorable deals

I like that Idea, but I think part of what makes trading with Lemurian's so weird is that the Prophecies aren't always about getting them good deals. Sometimes the prophecies demand they to get a bad deal, or barely break even. Other times they have to get flat out cheated, or be the one doing the cheating. It might even ask they get a very specific exchange. That's why it's difficult, because trader's are perfectly happy to take poor deals if that's what's prophecised.

Not sure how that'd look on the table top though, and it might be a little too convolouted.

I suppose you could balance the different types of trade prophecy by keeping it secret. Like, the other player doesn't know which type of prophecy the other's chosen, so they don't know what they need to prevent. That kind of thing.
>>
>>90949557
I think an easy way to set this up is so that the resource to be traded remains secret? I'm going to try and write in a few different special resources, already started with >>90931587 , stuff like Titanium Ore, Laputite Ore, Neptunium, etc. I think I'll simply give each a Silver equivalent value in each case so that even outside of Campaign play the rule still has some use.

>Intelligence Network
Actually that reminds me, what's the difference between elites and specialists? I can't find recruitment rules relating to specialists in the corebook.
>>
>>90951659
Elites are 3 max per Expedition total.
Specialists are 1 copy max (you can take multiple Specialists just not multiple copies of the same.
I'm thinking Campaign play might make the distinction more valuable. As in, you can recruit as many Elites in your campaign but can only field 3 of each, and only recruit one of each Specialist. Characters should probably be further specified in that once dead, you can't rerecruit one if you go back to homebase or whatever.
The Intelligence Network thing is something I want to see playtested before it settles down, even just 3 Stealth model might break down the game, or just make it really unfun.
And thank you, I'll make sure to make that clearer. I could just put it under the Section heading in each Expedition book.
>>
>>90952248
>Specialists are 1 copy max (you can take multiple Specialists just not multiple copies of the same.
So are specialists the same thing as heroes?
>>
>>90952590
I didn't put a limit on Heroes as of yet, but it would probably be good to limit them to 1 max of each profile, same as Specialists.
Or are you asking more thematically? Heroes are "build-your-own-profiles", you can select up to 5 traits from 3 tables and pay the price and you have your own unique Leader/Specialist.

I will definitely be going back over every book to fill out the rosters. They won't all get as big as say the US but yes I want every faction to have at least 1 if not 2 Heroes to build from. It also fixes the factions that only have named characters as Leaders atm.

So, my stab at Lady K. Insanely fragile leader that you still want to bring relatively close to the enemy lines. If you do, even a lucky Graze could end up removing the Titanium King.
I worked in that it can be removed, and also took out the +3 Dread, which was insane. That way she won't just aim to delete the enemy Leader and win every time.
I also didn't want to just straight up say "La Ombre is immune to Infiltration and Sabotage" as with the unit doc because while thematic it might sorta be unfun for non-La Ombre players. But since Napoleon is the only model I should have at Discipline 10 then effectively he is immune to it. The other La Ombre Leaders (Tenebrea, Deep Drunk Commander) aren't

Rule Question for 2e.
There are a lot of mentions in profiles of duelists ("this is a decent fighter but above average duelist", "mediocre duelist" for ex.) Up until now I have created special rules unique to each model to represent those, but I was thinking we could universalize it, say
> Duelist [X] : Whenever this model makes an attack against an enemy model with no models adjacent to it while having no models adjacent to itself, it gains +X to Accuracy and can count results up to X lower than a Critical as a Critical.
Thoughts?

Gift of Apollo is excellent and fits the "prophecy of doom" theme well, but I think Awareness could afford to be 9 or 10, considering she's prescient.
"House of Ilion" seems too good (since it just flat-out negates any morale-based tactics) and also off-theme, both in that it doesn't have much to do with her prophecy shtick and given that her whole thing was watching her side lose the war while powerless to stop it.
I'll note that "Leaden" Duke Cunningham also still has a "Your opponent immediately takes 3
Dread" action, at least in the version of the PDF I downloaded.
Anyway, here's an alternate unit hex. It's just a suggestion, but Cassandra is often depicted with red hair, and this face has a sort of distant despondency to it. John William Godward is sort of a gold mine for this kind of thing.

>"House of Ilion" seems too good (since it just flat-out negates any morale-based tactics) and also off-theme
I went with the old unit doc for it, basically copy pasted it. I agree it is pretty insane and I raised an eyebrow reading it, so let's scratch it completely.
I see no reason to not give her 9 Awareness either. 10 means she can't lose many tests, its fine for a few characters, there's Napoleon with Discipline 10, but just so you know, it does shut down Parley action on her, and some Prophesize actions completely. I'm fine either way.
>>90963195
>I'll note that "Leaden" Duke Cunningham also still has a "Your opponent immediately takes 3
It'll check, but is it on top of more Dread? Because the original in the old unit doc for Lady K was "if this kills the enemy Leader, gain an additionnal 3 Dread", so 8 total in one go.
Ah no went to check. Its just a one time +3 dread. That works in itself if you think it fits the theme.

>Anyway, here's an alternate unit hex. It's just a suggestion
Oh will use this, thank you very much and for the rec, I like Benjamin-Constant, didn't know Godward, but he gives of a similar vibe, I think he might even be better at faces and skin tones.

Trying! The Saur thing is one of the aspect of this setting that I feel makes it hold together especially well. It just really feels right.
Regarding picrel, I feel he's going to end up being pretty faction defining. Hard to see how an Akritai line wouldn't want one of these every time.
>>
>>90963511
Yeah, removing House of Ilion is fine, I may have went a bit overboard on that one. I do want to keep some reference to Ilion/Troy itself, since that's one of the defining parts of her character, though not sure how to implement it at the moment.

Absolutely. Plus, it also gives a ton of design space as you can have many different types of Saurs.

I'm not really sure either. I think that if anyone should have 10, it should be Apollo's cursed/blessed, and she makes sense as a benchmark for the upper limit on foresight, but game balance is potentially delicate.
>Cunningham
The thing with him is that you sort of wonder what it is he's doing to produce the dread. I mean, with K, she'd be speaking words of doom or something, but what's Cunningham got? His family tree?
>Picrel is insane.
Yeah, there's something immensely charming about the era when they'd figured out how The Ancients lived and dressed but were still painting them in those vivid and idealized Orientalist/Academic/Pre-Raphaelite styles.
(Here's another one on a similar theme, if any similar units get added.)
>>90964427
So, why is he Perseus? Presumably Perseus I is the mythological Perseus, but he didn't have much to do with Knossos.
(Minos might be cool, actually, he's got the wise-but-sinister King Solomon/David thing going on, and he was made a judge of the dead in the underworld.)

That really short transition scene in Jurassic World where they show the petting zoo with kids getting to ride baby brachiosaurus was my favourite of the entire revival serie.

>I'm not really sure either. I think that if anyone should have 10
I'll set her at 10 for now, she could still be beaten in Face-to-Face rolls, she just won't fail any simple test herself. I think that's fine.
>The thing with him is that you sort of wonder what it is he's doing to produce the dread.
Have one of his man recite his titles and nicknames loudly.
> "Edward “Leaden Duke” Cunningham, First Lord of the Admiralty, Duke of Iceland, Aka Edward “Rain Pain on Danes” Cunningham, Edward “Sink Atlantis Again” Cunningham and Edward “New Mu Mutilator” Cunningham".
There's probably a whole bunch of Lemurians who recites the many massacres that Lord Cunningham has single-handedly caused and who hope to be one day able to duel him to prove they are the strongest, thinking he's some kind of insane bloodthirsty warrior.
>>90966330
>So, why is he Perseus? Presumably Perseus I is the mythological Perseus, but he didn't have much to do with Knossos.
Maybe we could go with the "of X" relating to the surface city or state of origin, possibly pre-fall, or after if we allow for migrants to eventually become Aristocrats (there's been migrations for thousands of years so its safe to assume some aristocrat families are descended from migrants. It could be an additional reason why he is a bit unpopular with the rest of aristocracy, on top of him being a reformist.
> Picrel
I managed to get some stuff done today, didn't fully finish Atlantis but it's getting there. There's been a lot of movement in the doc.
I will remove the Atlantean Army General since he was a generic stand-in for Strategos Hyas. I'm thinking we could have an "Atlantean Officer" as a Hero that could eventually be replacing AAG.

Also, regarding the Combat Alchemist, how memey do we want it to be? Because according to the old unit doc its supposed to be memey, and the rules suggested are very much so.
> Record the number of attacks it makes
> After the third, small chance of blowing itself on all attacks it makes for the rest of the game.
> After the 6th, every other attack has a 50% chance of being a dud.
It would be a Specialist so you would never have to keep multiple tracks of attacks but still its a lot. Let me know.

Cool, will get on it.
In the meantime here's what I did with the Scion, turned him into a Hero proper. Probably one of the stronger ones too.
I'm also adjusting pricing for a lot of stuff. The Akritai and Kataphraktoi were too cheap for their potential/armour. The Kat. will also have their 3rd Health box removed, otherwise he'd have to be somwhere around ~18 to be priced properly, and that's without the Olm. He's still going to be tough with the Olm's bonus Health and its great armour. He just won't eclipse the Armourclad in durability.
In other news Taiping Anon seems to have almost completely finished the spreadsheet, there's only a few special rules left. So I will get onto that tomorrow.

Here's Strategos Hyas. Only thing I changed from the original pitch was putting in a range to the Lodestar General buff and having it conditional on Discipline, as well as the Man of the People buff being only applicable to tests and not Morale checks themselves. His Health block and 3 AP should make him a good combat general even outside of Lodestar General allowing him to turn a Hero or a bunch of Armourclad/Kataphraktoi into absolute beasts.

Haven't read through all the Atlantis units yet, is there a leader unit that can reduce dread? Might be a fun combo with that Men of Bronze ability.

>Haven't read through all the Atlantis units yet, is there a leader unit that can reduce dread?
Strategos Hyas can do it when killing enemies, I think that's the only one for now. It could be a trait for an Officer (Hero) unit...
>I'd be up for memey.
I went with memey. I don't know how to cost it honestly, and the RNG gets so bad after the 6th attack, I gave him a sort of bonus for getting beyond 9 (rest of the game/campaign all his attacks cause Fire). as a sort of reward.
Gotta go do some shopping before store closes but I'll be back and posting it before the end of the evening. With it I think I only have the Chirurgeon to bake and I think its a full roster.
I also went a good way transcribing the Taiping Expedition book from the spreadsheet to book format. Good stuff Taiping Anon.

Looking through it again no, Atlantis has a distinct lack of Dread management, the only one is Hyas. Its fine because they don't have the low Discipline of other Epigeans but they could probably use a few more tools.
Maybe we could revamp the House of Ilion into that instead for Lady K?

Yeah, that might be a good idea. Giving more dread mitigation would also work with them being the "uplifted philosopher kingdom" of the setting. Perhaps something with killing enemy units reducing your own dread? Though that has the potential to snowball.
