PRÖÖÖÖÖÖHs are still canon edition

What is this:
>Political compass thread turned the best damned skirmish wargame setting ever developed. (WIP) (by us)

Theme:
> Jules Verne's Journey to the Center of the Earth meets Made in Abyss and 19th century American Gold Rushes
> Skirmish campaign-based ruleset

Rules:
> Entry notes must include references to a game loop
> Transparent background
> Wojaks are expected, but other MS Paint creations are welcome

This thread's compass is dedicated to the Underground (Layer 3 and below, excluding Napoleon's Eldest Guard) powers.
This includes Atlan, Atlantis, Mu and New Mu, Lemuria, local tribes and many others.
Possible exclusion of Hyperborea since its from the Firmament, not the Deep.

>>88608008
Sounds good but the timeline gets a bit messed up, considering the sicilian king only managed to unite italy thanks to the stromboli entrance. Also the whole colonial victim allies with underground is a bit exhausted so how about this:
>Great revolt of the faithful happens in 1868 and is brutally put down by sicilian mercenaries and allies.
>1871 an entrance is discovered in Ethiopia using a forgotten contraption inside the Obelisk of Aksum
>Winter of 1871 Francesco II tyrant of naples invades Ethiopia using mercenary troops
>the italian catholics, angered by yet another show of aggression by their heathen king against faithful christians side with Ethiopia
>Sicilians are pushed out of ethiopia, but the ethiopians' Catholic allies remain there, fearing persecution in their homeland
After that its either >>88609370 OR
>pope flees to ethiopia

Ethiopian being aligned with the "Catholic alliance" could make sense, but we shouldn't exclude the Spanish completly.

And I agree, colonies (well future colonies in this case) getting help from underground is getting a bit tired, and using Ethiopian strong link to christianity is cool. On topic of Lemurians and prophecy mechanics:
It seems like there are 2 ways to use prophecies
> Dice pool with use conditions
available to a lot of factions in limited quantities
> Beaming battle precognition straight into the minds of your soldiers
available to Lemurians

The reliance on buffs would differntiate Lemurians a lot from other factions, but I'm not sure how that could be implemented. Maybe you could distribute buffs to different stats based on the number of prophecies you have?
>>
>>88611620
>The reliance on buffs would differntiate Lemurians a lot from other factions, but I'm not sure how that could be implemented.
Weak units generally
Lemurian leaders provide single powerful buffs to one unit at a time?
That'd be interesting tactically, where one of your weak chaff units suddenly goes Rambo and becomes a huge problem.
>>
>>88611630
The only problem I saw with chaff is that since we apparently went with single model units "horde" faction can't really exist.

I guess in the schyzo verse, there is a squad-unit based wargame, a single model per unit specialist game ; hell maybe there is a Fallen-Paris specialist-game where the car driving guys fight occultist in the outskirt of the city.

>Playing against a Lemuriafag

>>
>>88611687
>"horde" faction can't really exist
I wouldn't say that. They don't need to have 100s of models to be considered a horde, just enough to outnumber your average expedition at least 2 to 1. While a british player might have at most 7-8 models a Lemurian player should be able to easily take ~20
>>
>>88611766
Hum, I guess your right. I was never imagining up to 100 model on the field anyway more like something Legion sized, where "Elite" are like 3-5 pet unit while horde trash are maybe 12, but you only have a handfull of squads.

Ethiopians helping Italians fight for their country's freedom is ironic enough, but the Portuguese actually tried colonizing Ethiopia in the XVII century and even installed a couple of puppet Catholic emperors for some time. After they were overthrown, Catholic missionaries were banned from entering Ethiopia until the early XIX century. What is the difference between lemurs and lemurians?
>>
>>88613007
Lemurs are ravenous deep-beasts that eat, kidnap and destroy everything they can reach.
Lemuria is a nation of ancient prophecy-worshipping LARPers of an older, dead civilisation.

Their only similarity is the name, really.
>>
>>88613007
Lemurs are degenerated future humans who have fled underground, or perhaps fled upwards from below. Or so some people say...

Lemurians are larpers living in the ruins of Ancient Lemuria, which was founded by the original Lemurians who may or may not have been the evolutionary future or dead end of lemurs. Or so some people say...

>Said Italian are now ruled by the Tyrant of Naples and volcano worshiping pagan keeping the gate open with sacrifice and selling their entrance to everyone willing to pay

Should clockwork thinkers be on this chart? If some form of Analytical engine maybe caused Hyperborean downfall it was probably them. And since they're found at the bottom of the ocean a few have probably ended up further under.
If we do stick them here I'd say we put them one left and one down from Atlantean Aristo.

original anon who fleshed out the skywhale here and is responsible for half of the shitposts about it, should i rework the concept to fit better? originally it seemed like there was a more even in the air/in the ground split but now that it's mainly taking place underground it fits even less. ofc i think to an extent that "this is old and doesn't fit well" feel is part of the charm.

also i would move it a bit more towards civilized (just a tile or two) since they're sometimes used as transport by sky-nobles. i think optimistic barbarian would be a fun slot to have something new, though if you want to keep it there since it's basically just a wild animal i get it.

>Is anyone updating the docs?
Some anons are, though I think the lore doc is the more popular one. I've been meaning to give the rules a proper look over myself, just the suggestion system is a little annoying to use.

Is the game ready for a playtest?
No. The rules are still in the very basic stages last I checked, and we don't have that many units to play with even if they were.

>Why hasn't anyone created stats for any more units?
Laziness.
>>
>>88623441
>Why hasn't anyone created stats for any more units?
>Laziness.
We're still in the concept phase mate. We don't even know what the units are nor have we settled in the actual stat blocks they're going to be using. We'll get there.
>>
>>88623595
>>88623441
I was thinking about game modes throughout my insomnia last night. The hex tile map dig your way through is very cool but might be hard to translate properly (I know I know, this isnt a real thing, but still, I want it to be). If we go fully and only hex tile grid digging we might as well print the wojak on cut outs and forego the miniature modeling or even 3d aspect of it altogether, which mind you could work, but I feel its be a use lost opportunity. There should be a mode for a more straight up skirmish battle, outside of the caverns, in the settlements.
>>
>>88623791
We could also have a separate system for digging that excludes the tilemap movement entirely.
Some kind of off-the-map system that determines where you are allowed to deploy your troops on the actual battlefield?
>>
Back. Will be putting together an update soon.
>>
>>88623791
I think creating actual 3d models is a very endgame situation for us, since we're essentially creating a wargame from scratch it seems like. Though I guess we could allow kitbashing, it'd get difficult when we get to something like the Lemurian Flesh Construct. And as regards the different game modes, we're discussing that earnestly and you should add your thoughts to the doc.
So far I think the general thought is
>Campaign mode, this is where tunnelers are used most, you dig through a vast campaign map and meet the enemy in battle. Results influence the direction of the ongoing campaign.
>Straight up skirmish on a field of battle with some obstacles to dig through
>As above, but most of the map must be dug through, with an empty spot here and there
>>
>>88620660
This related to any faction?
>>
>>88623972
Thought about this a little more and added this to the doc:

A General Proposal for the World and How it Works:

(This is going to include general gameplay stuff, not sure where to put this)

The world is, as above, a hex grid of several layers, and pre-built entrances between layers, or ones that can be dug by players.

For simplicity’s sake it is probably best we restrict ourselves to designing a small region of the world, e.g Paris and the layers below Paris.
Players are in charge of expeditions. This is your army. There are multiple players on the board.

A good chunk of this general world map must be dug through, if one wants to navigate it. This is where the Worker units will be used most.

Players pursue their objective, whatever that may be, and when they come into conflict, any units lost in battle are lost for good. You cannot replace individual units. You can only recruit more when you resupply at your factions/a neutral resupply point. This means that if you lose all your Worker units in a battle (e.g in a cave-in) you cannot progress any further. You must retreat to a resupply point and recruit more.

Similarly, if you lose a good chunk of your combat units it would be a bad idea to pick a fight with another player who has a fresh army/expedition.

Recruiting is done through a system of resources that are increased by successful expeditions, factional dependent, e.g Atlans get more Titanium which gets them more units, colonials get cash/prestige.

This will probably mean it’s a long form game that will take several hours to finish, at the earliest, since what I’m describing I’d like to call campaign mode. Don’t know how many people are up for that. Hell, it’s probably better we work out the basic rules of combat first instead of jumping into a general campaign, but I’m writing this down for later.

What do anons think?
>>
>>88623972
>>88624104
>This will probably mean it’s a long form game that will take several hours to finish, at the earliest
I've though that maybe a campaign system similar to Mordheim, Frostgrave or TNT would fit better. Players decide their campaign moves beforehand and meet to play out the actual battles. This would unfortunately make some players miss out on some action if we use a big enough hex map, although that could be fixed by just having more players or objectives that force everyone to meet up

On the topic of models: most of the stuff in the compass can be proxied fairly easily, either with existing 3d models or just a box of Perry historicals.

Actually, I completely forgot about King Perseus. He has cool lore and it would be a shame not to use him. But I guess it's a good time to figure out Atlantean and Atlan lore. Atlantis is supposed to be kingdom but a democracy and the Atlan Republic somehow has a king. Here's my take on the timeline:
>Atlantis falls to the 5th (as per doc) layer kinda like Paris did
>It falls into the underground sea and is still an island
>They recover and settle the surrounding islands and parts of the coast
>Go up a layer and find deposits of Titanium
>Titanium is obviously not the chemical element, but a supernatural substance
>Atlantean scholars conclude that it's remains of the Titans, an extinct race of rock giants from whom Atlanteans and Atlans claim partial descent (Atlas, specifically)
>They may or may not have a connection to Hyperborea (Atlas "holding up the sky" can mean many things)
>Mining colonies are established, over time locals become obsessed with Titanium, start straight up worshipping it
>They hoard Titanium, refuse to ship it to the metropole and proclaim themselves an independent Atlan Republic ("Atlan" is just a regional dialect for "Atlantean")
>Eternal War between Atlantis and the Atlans begins
>Over time power in the republic concentrates more and more in the hands of the military, it becomes a dictatoship
>The Titanium King could be an actual king (like Napoleon became emperor) or it could just be a moniker and not his actual title
>War takes a toll on Atlantis and the king's grip on power grows weaker
>Nobles rebel and win, can't decide on a new king and settle on a temporary Regent. The position becomes permanent over time. Atlantis becomes an aristocratic republic with limited lowborn participation.
OR
>A new king (Perseus II) is proclaimed, but the aristocracy and the lowborn manage to secure some concessions. Now it's something like a semi-constitutional monarchy.
Thoughts?

Hello anons, it is me, the dude who has been updating the Unit lists in the lore doc with the chart.

PSA for our underground factions, Lemuria is flying head and shoulders in front of the rest in terms of units, Mu is close behind, and Atlan/Atlantis are lagging. The Sky People are definitely the farthest back, and as far as non faction groups go:

There are Outlanders who seem to be sky people in and of themselves but have very obvious surface tech, my guess is surface dwellers who cruise around as pirates and aeronatuical mercenaries and guides, making lives out of the layers and thereby making them “Outlanders”, no longer from the surface but inhabitants of the underground. (New golden age of piracy only it is sky reavers raiding the mostly Balloon-operated entry routes?)

There are Olm-Men, Gorge (lmao), Clockwork thinkers, and renaissance/medieval Neanderthals/Tribals of the layers to build on for free units if you want.

‘Course, didn’t mean that as a command to work on sky people or stop working on Lemurians, just said it as a status update as things stand now. If anyone would like to use the info they can, if not, it’s there as a point of reference anyways. There’ll be more threads after this to flush it out anyways

I'll get to work on some sky peoples units
General theming? I'm thinking Arabian aesthetics with some Greek sprinkled in for flavor. Very classical to contrast these slowly industrializing factions
>>
>>88630185
Small suggestion for a change to one US unit. Make the American Expeditionary Corps US Marines instead. During the time of the setting, if America needed to intervene or invade, it was done by the Marines. This includes interventions done on behalf of business interests, etc. (see the entirety of the Banana Wars), and given that's essentially who's sending the AEC, a small name change might give them some grounding and cool factor.
>>

The Sky People have generally been considered as the "Holdover from 1e" somewhat comedic relief faction. What with the PROOOOOOTing skyelleafints and whatnot

Gunny definitely can go in despite not making it onto the chart since it’s a more than fair addition, I could say. If any anons agree feel free to drop a comment on the doc once I slot him in there.

While I’m here, there are some Mystery Meats that have yet to be taken care of, no, not the Austrian kind.

Namely, Warfare Existentionalist and the Chem Grenadier, what faction exactly should they fit into? I’m drawing blanks.

Also the Lemurian Officer in the OG chart is very much a WW1 looking mofo, does not fit at all with the leading Lemurian vibes, so if the original anon who posted him is among us or an especially creative anon feels like they can shoehorn it into making sense I am all ears.

Rules Anon here, I haven't been active for a couple days, had some shit to work on.
>suggestion system is a little annoying to use.
suggest a better one lol. No honestly. I dont see whats wrong with just typing stuff.
Rules are barebone but I have done as much as I could. I could, but dont want to create the entire rule set alone. Its a collaborative effort, so guys go into that doc and start discussing.
>>88623595
Well its a good idea to work on that parallelly
>>88623791
For the start lets just use Pain or something. We could maybe to VTT if enough anons have t and are willing. Digging in games isnt hard to do at all. Just place cutouts and flip them or remove them from the board when its dug trough.
>>88623819

>>88623972
it is, I know its a meme and funny but lets chill with the 3d stuff.
>Lemurian Flesh Construct
Just kit-bash lol. And douse it all in corrosive glue.
>Campaign mode
>Just a series of skirmish battles on different types of maps. The result of every skirmish is your beginning position of the next one.
Say you start a game with 10 soldiers adn 5 workers, but in the battle you lose 4 workers and 5 soldiers. Do you push on or stay in camp for some R&R, waiting for reinforcements to come. After all only one worker cant dig alone trough the next map. The other player seeing he has no opposition is tree to pass trough the next skirmish alone, or well just fighting the NPCs (controlled by the other player?). Or maybe he wants to finish the other player so a new skirmish battle starts, the map being the players camp.
>The games will last long.
Yes, thats why we need to optimize the actual game to be as fun and as simple as possible. Thats why the old digging system was replaced.
>A good chunk of this general world map must be dug through, if one wants to navigate it. This is where the Worker units will be used most.
>>
>>88624104
>Each aftion could have its own starting location.
France Paris, US, Appalachians, Balkans Prokletije, Ottomans, Istanbul, Russians Kamchatka, Italians the Vulcano they are feeding and so on.
>A good chunk of this general world map must be dug through, if one wants to navigate it. This is where the Worker units will be used most.
Nice idea. Should I bring more workers so I can dig more and faster? Arrive at a location first and try to mine as much of the valuables as I can before the others come and contest my claim.
>Players pursue their objective, whatever that may be...
Yes! This. You can replace units but its gonna take them some time to get to you. The deeper you are the longer it will take them to arrive.
We could maybe set up more caps as we go down. We could have to balance a couple resources, like Money (the value of valuable goods we find, sending them topside), Food and Bmats maybe, for constructing as stuff.
>This will probably mean it’s a long form game that will take several hours to finish...
A full campaign could not be finished in one sittin if we are playing with 10 or how many layers there are now. lets say that every layer has a couple of maps where battle can take place. It Will last along time. But if we could bring a battles to be short, 20-30 min lets say, it would maybe be doable.

>>
>>88639658
You could always make it extra convoluted by making the monarchy an elected position (thanks Naboo) and the regent is standing in for the true king who will return from the depths one day Hopefully completely normal and without significant mutations or corruption
>>
>>88640318
Or it's a weird double throne monarchy with one hereditary position and an elected one, to keep a balance between old nobility and popular class.

PSA after the most recent update by the unit list dude, Atlan got a kick in the pants and now very comfortably outshines Atlantis in terms of unit lists. As it stands, Atlan uses a heavyset, slow moving and buff-needy frontline of infantry to grind out enemies, uses slave soldiers as the mobility and screening component to soak damage on the approach with the option for springgunners if for some reason you want to try and outshoot colonials (???)

Atlantis has Kataphraktoi, alchemists, sharpshooters, Prometheans and iconoclasts that seem to be providing a very explosive and more mobile unit list, AoEs, sniping potential, obliterate things before they get into combat range and sweep the remains with heavy olm cavalry, hammer and anvil potential using Akritai though don't expect them to perform like immortals.

these are the current leading vibes, Atlantis and the Sky People are now neck and neck which is ironic in and of itself, but with the next update I imagine the skypeople will also pull ahead. outside of these, there're also the outlanders I mentioned in >>88630185
>>
>>88642801
Noted.

MORE ATLANTEAN TROOPS. I like that they're falling into the "Evenly statted jack of all trades" kind of faction. The sort of entry-level underground army that isn't too intimidating to put together or figure out tactics for.
And I think Mu could use a few extras too, perhaps.
>>
>>88642835
Mu is currently a bit all over the place, divided into really complex, high reward high risk single units like doppelgangers and Imaterii that can win or lose in an instant. basic but effective cavalry spam lists, high mobility saur knights and keshig running a cyclone around your offensive-defensive anvil of pikemen, to the no brain cells all balls to every wall Morlock Horde gameplay.

based on what we know, the Tall-fin is the ideal leader choice for a morlock build, for obvious reasons.

the emperor I have to imagine is the most martial of the leader options and packs a lot of punch by himself, so fits in with the straightforward approach of the standard army build where you are looking to engage on good terms only

and the empress has really convoluted rules and hard to understand play, so she probably fits with the more esoteric side of doppelgangers and imaterii magi, perhaps inclusive of the priestesses' morale play
>>
>>88642801
