I really should copy some of the puzzles out as handouts for players.

I always really liked the Jalis and thought they were the coolest tribe, and always try to include a reference to them because I was big into knights.

I still want to have an Ol appear in a campaign and befriend the party.

they're literally written for 8 year olds. if you want good kid's fantasy try the Prydain Chronicles instead.

I'd say the books are a better experience, but the anime's still enjoable regardless.

Somehow they made The Glus more pants-shittenly terrifying in the anime, since it regenerated from all damage like a sea-sluggy Wolverine and could squeeze through gaps like it was liquid.

Deltora itself is basically fantasy Australia.

For a fantasy series, the continent of Deltora is a fucking shithole, even before Malverlain took over.
Less than a few days from the nation’s capital, Del, you have:
>maneating centaurs that’ll riddle you to death and eat you piece by piece
>paralyzing locust things
>a bigass sauropod thing that’s carnivorous
>maneating pitfall plants that accelerate blood loss
>a fucking dragon

Deltora Quest is actually interesting because while all the heroes are armed, they almost never are able to use force of arms to defeat a foe. At best it's a delaying tactic until they can do something else.

I would argue a faithful Deltora-style game wouldn't have a combat system, just a 'keep the enemy busy' move.
>>
>>88478948
I think it’s moreso a result of how comically powerful the antagonist is. Malverlain/The Shadow Lord is almost godlike when compared to a normal man, having lived for millennia and entirely forsaken physical form. You don’t beat something like that in a fight, you have to trick it or create a means of negating it’s advantage, and the same goes for the lesser monsters. Direct combat against something like a Vraal is tantamount to suicide, but you can still defeat it by playing around it’s lack of sight and single-minded drive to kill. Ol’s are shapeshifting monstrosities with enough intelligence to hide their weaknesses and capitalise on their strengths, but they all share that singular weak spot under the brand of their master.
Strength isn’t a factor in winning most fights because the opponent will just overpower you or render that advantage null and void, so strategy becomes key.

I love that you never see it coming because the entire first half of Forests of Silence is set from Jared's POV, so when the timeskip hits and we meet Lief, "Jared's" son, we accept it at face value
If memory serves, the anime does this in a flashback episode with "Jared" recounting his story to Lief. In that episode, to keep up the illusion, "Endon'' looks remarkably similar to a certain scarred man. Ideally they would've never shown "Endon" or "Sharn's" faces in full, but sacrifices must be made in the translation to visual mediums
>>
>>88481986
I think i got it
Accordion player + dancing dog (The player is heavily robed and the dog is covered in spots. Pretty easy.)
Any combination of the two birds and two butterflies.
Mother + child (the mother is heavily robed and the kid appears to have a mark on their foot)
Now to stalk all eight simultaneously and wait three days for The Tremor.

>>
>>88477063
I've run several games in the setting and it's a lighthearted blast every time. Most of my players have never read the books, so it's a blast to half to give them Secrets of Deltora as an over the top in game handout. One player actually read it and learned the setting and kept the team alive. What good times.
>>
>>88477348
Absolutely read the books. They're short and simplistic as most children's literature is, but the anime in no way does anything justice. Admittedly the writer's effort goes chiefly into creature descriptions, but if nothing else that's worth the read
Now. Wider question time. You choose to replace one iconic monster in your system of choice with a deltora quest creature. What you choose, and why?
I would replace dragons with Wennbar, and have the wenn take over kobolds
>>
>>88486631
>How were the 2nd and 3rd series?
Each one gets a little more contrived. Second series is about dealing with a shadow lord contingency left in place should he be ousted. It works and is only a little bit of a stretch, considering he seems to work a lot like Sauron and most of his minions died when he withdrew
Series 3 is overall kind of pointless. Short, disconnected from the world you know. It's only point of note is Glock Fucking Dies in book 1
>>
>>88490215
Ya got it the wrong way around, DQ2 was the underground seas beneath Deltora where Glock fucking died to a old as dirt nautilus, DQ3 covered the Shadow Lord’s overly complicated contingency plan
>>
>>88491760
I.. checked this before posting. It's not the end of the world, but I'd have sworn they saved the underground BS for the end-of-series.
Though, thinking back on it, the ending with the dragons had a lot more actual ending to it
>>
>>88493053
By looking at the greater scale of things, the plot looks like this:
>Deltora Quest: Gathering the Belt to evict The Shadow Lord, ending his tyranny and restoring peace
>DQ 2: Venturing into a long-forgotten network of caverns to sneak below the mountains and infiltrate the Shadowlands, attempting to rescue the countless people dragged away there during the Shadow Lord’s reign.
>DQ 3: Dealing with the contingency plans left behind by the Shadow Lord, cleansing the land of his corruption once and for all.
I don’t blame you for mixing up 2 and 3, because venturing into enemy territory and blasting a belt-boosted pipe in his ethereal face feels like endgame, but nah, it’s the end of the second major story arc, go burn some singing rocks with dragon flame lmao.
>>

Tales of Deltora gave him a bit more fluff, mainly that he was a Jalis knight who set out with his friends to get some nectar from the Lillies of Life. Considering he’s a hollow shell and there’s no other undead sets of armour around, I’m pretty sure you can fill in the blanks
>>
>>88527631
Can you imagine the hissy fit he would have thrown if the Lilies ever managed to bloom and he realized that he had no mouth to drink the nectar with? Not to mention how he was stupid enough to forget that plants need light to glow, and his vines were blocking out the sun.
>>
>>88531026
>know that the Lillies only have enough nectar for one man, takes his friends anyways
>seething rage over loosing the Lillies nectar allows him to persist after death, doesn’t realise it and wastes away until he’s a spirit possessing his centuries-old armour
>fortifies the Lillies’s little section of the Forest with his new whack plant control powers, failed basic biology so he doesn’t realise that it’ll just prevent the Lillies from blooming

Deltora would be great for tabletop because a lot of the adventures were solved through wits, items, and riddles
>>
>>88542409
I was asking because of the "where Enna sleeps" part of the rhyme. Also, why hasn't someone tried sealing up the Maze so that nothing can get in, causing the Glus to starve?
>>
>>88478948
This is what I loved about deltora quest. As far as kid's books go it feels like it does horror very well. Lief and even barda, an experienced fighter never really have success in combat. It feels realistic in a sense. The heros arent superhuman fighters tasking down 20 orcs at a time, and something like Vraals are scary as shit to even consider taking on with a sword. You'd just get slaughtered.
If you want a deltora style campaign then fighting should be dangerous and discouraged akin to the CoC rpg system, and monsters should have ways of being defeated via outsmarting them, using the environment and solving puzzles etc.
>>
>>88543916
Ironically I’d say that the Glus is best kept alive, damn thing pretty much single handedly protects Deltora’s upper western coasts from being swamped by Kobb like the coasts of Jalis territory.
That, and I doubt that dropping the cave on it would kill it, given it’s regenerative prowess, capability of slipping through disturbingly small gaps, and likely having extremely low energy expenditure via its highly patient hunting strategy.
>>
>>88534181
>>88531822
My theory is that Gorl actually died at the same time his brothers did, slain by the wounds they inflicted even as he killed them. As for the totem gem thing, remember, he was last out of the forest before Adin’s time, so it’s entirely possible that he never heard of the Topaz of what it could do.
>>
>>88477063

Three pairs do other shit, while the final pair travels alongside him, and since Reece never leaves Noradz, the only thing the normies know is that they travel in pairs, and that there's supposedly nine of them.

I stopped reading after the second "serie" where they go to Not!Mordor

Is the serie with the dragons any good?

Laughing Jack is pretty cool with his ghost-casino-pirate ship, and the Masked Ones are horrifying once the (metaphorical) mask comes off. Also had some cool monsters like the Kobb, the blood lilies and fleshbanes seen in >>88482170, and some wild whodunnit shenanigans with the Sister of the South’s guardian.

Beyond that, it also serves as the official end of Leif, Barda and Jasmine’s stories, so it’s worth reading for that at least.

Which Gem is your favorite in the series? What about your favorite tribe?

Topaz is best, dude was lucky for starting with that

What are some cool Deltora AU ideas that could work for campaigns? What about settings that would do well for crossover campaigns?
>>
>>88562997
Topaz is the best because it has the most direct usage out of all the gems, since it grants you immunity to illusions, the ability to contact the dead, and immunity to any dream fuckery that isn't your own.
Opal comes in a very close second though, future sight is busted, no ifs or buts about it.

>Sire, the Glus is loose
>>88547158
If memory serves, Gorl slew his brothers by treachery? I can't remember if there was a full-blown fight or if he just hacked them down. As for the gem? That makes sense, though the gems are still powerful without the belt. Maybe he was just too obsessed to notice or care

>Huge fuckoff dinosaur and it's paralyzing slave-minions
It's a creature of legend for a reason anon. I like them and think they should be a little more widespread. Given you need to be deaf to really avoid their stun, and the Wenn can move with uncomfortable haste when it wants to? They're solid monsters.

Better then the underground arc. The plot is more grounded and the shadow lord contingency is in-character for him. Plus we get to see some new bits and bobs
>>
>>88477063
How do you feel about the Shadow Lord as the BBEG of the series? Would you prefer to use them as the main villain of a campaign, another major villain like Thaegan, or an original creation?

>Lief got to fuck her countless times
>Lief imregnated her thrice
>Lief got to watch her tight, toned body be overtaken by mature femininity
>Lief held her hand each time as she brought new life into the world
>Lief and Jasmine got to grow old, knowing that their efforts led to a new golden age for Deltora, and that the future would be safe in their children's hands.
it's just not fair bros

Nah man, he wasn't sure but he made sure they knew that the Enemy is clever and sly, and that to its anger and envy a thousand years is like the blink of an eye.

Problem is, Malveain's gonna have to get either extra sneaky on his next attempt since Ols are public knowledge now, or go back to the ole direct invasion strategy.

Hell, if memory serves he just fucked off and tried taking over Dorne, only to fuck that up too. I have absolutely zero idea as to what the fuck happens in Star of Deltora, so if he actually does shit there I'm completely unaware.
