>ITT we talk about the greatest piece of Australian literature and discuss it's applicability to tabletop RPGs
>>88477063I really should copy some of the puzzles out as handouts for players.
>>88477071I really wanna try a proper Valley of the Lost dungeon-spanning puzzle at some point, but god knows that my players are complete retards.
I always really liked the Jalis and thought they were the coolest tribe, and always try to include a reference to them because I was big into knights. I still want to have an Ol appear in a campaign and befriend the party.
>>88477063Australia is an embarrassment to the Anglosphere, and that's saying something when Canada and New Zealand exist.
I shamelessly ripped it off for game of 4e and no one noticed until halfway through.I want to suck on anime Jasmine's dirty, stinky toes
Are the books worth reading, or should I stick to the anime only?
>>88477063God the creatures in this series were great.Vraal, Ols and The Glus scared the shit out of me as a kid
>>88477348they're literally written for 8 year olds. if you want good kid's fantasy try the Prydain Chronicles instead.
>>88477362The Glus still gives me the shakes. I have no idea who approved it being the cover of a book lol.
>>88477348I'd say the books are a better experience, but the anime's still enjoable regardless. >verification not required
>>88477376>>88477376Somehow they made The Glus more pants-shittenly terrifying in the anime, since it regenerated from all damage like a sea-sluggy Wolverine and could squeeze through gaps like it was liquid.
>>88477264No need to be upset mate, she'll be right
>>88477063>it was Australianhuh never knew
>>88477788> the plants want you dead> the animals want you dead> the environment wants you deadDeltora itself is basically fantasy Australia.
>>88477788For a fantasy series, the continent of Deltora is a fucking shithole, even before Malverlain took over.Less than a few days from the nation’s capital, Del, you have:>maneating centaurs that’ll riddle you to death and eat you piece by piece >paralyzing locust things>a bigass sauropod thing that’s carnivorous>maneating pitfall plants that accelerate blood loss>a fucking dragon
>>88477885Nah canberra's not that bad, like you said, only one croc at a time! Head on up to darwin if you really wanna get nipped
>>88478198>Dread Mountainwhat a shithole, there’s Vraal every two bloody feet up there
>>88478198Does this make Ned Kelly Gorl?
>>88478577>I am now imagining a Wild West/Frontier rendition of DeltoraPlease stop, I can only get so erect
Deltora Quest is actually interesting because while all the heroes are armed, they almost never are able to use force of arms to defeat a foe. At best it's a delaying tactic until they can do something else.I would argue a faithful Deltora-style game wouldn't have a combat system, just a 'keep the enemy busy' move.
>>88478948I think it’s moreso a result of how comically powerful the antagonist is. Malverlain/The Shadow Lord is almost godlike when compared to a normal man, having lived for millennia and entirely forsaken physical form. You don’t beat something like that in a fight, you have to trick it or create a means of negating it’s advantage, and the same goes for the lesser monsters. Direct combat against something like a Vraal is tantamount to suicide, but you can still defeat it by playing around it’s lack of sight and single-minded drive to kill. Ol’s are shapeshifting monstrosities with enough intelligence to hide their weaknesses and capitalise on their strengths, but they all share that singular weak spot under the brand of their master.Strength isn’t a factor in winning most fights because the opponent will just overpower you or render that advantage null and void, so strategy becomes key.
>>88477063there are a handful of aussie books that are worth being entire tabletop settings.
>>88477063I still own all the books. This series and Myth Adventures and are wall defined my childhood.
>>88477063I remember this. Heck, I think I still have some of the books somewhere! Does anyone have any ideas on what system would work best for a Deltora game?
>>88479668I'd default to saying some sort of OSR game to capture that lethality feel.
>>88477063the cover art on the series was absolutely spectacular.
>>88477063>TFW no toxril "The Glus" edh deck.
>>88479825Interesting beasty, but I think that one well placed nail (the metal kind) of sufficient length would be enough to pierce its squishy skin.
>>88479832According to >>88477419, it has Wolverine tier regeneration, so while you definitely damage it with a nail of sufficient size, making that damage last is the hard part.
>>88479857In that case I would nail it to the floor.
>>88477063I had never heard of Deltora until I was in a bookshop in Fukuoka around 2010. I bought vol. 1 at a BookOff for like 100 yen.I was really disappointed until I realized it was Australian, then I guess it all made sense.
Fuck it, it’s time for the Book of Monsters
>>88481492Everyone’s depressed, music loving giant catfishSoldeen stands out amongst the many big fuckoff monsters, mainly because he’s kinda civil at the end of the day, and could legitimately be reasoned with.
>>88481543Ah Gorl, the selfish fuck

>>88477063Loved this shit, the Three Doors series too
>>88481763Somehow these overgrown chickens managed to last all the way to the last few chapters of the final book, and if that isn’t impressive I don’t know what is
>>88481811Kinda liked that Reeah had three heads in the anime. Made Jasmine and Barra evading his attention a far more impressive feat.
>>88481845Don’t really have much to say about these guys beyond the whole “plans within plans” fuckery that was the City of Rats.

>>88482197And that’s it
I remember reading these books. Such cool cover arts.
>>88480351Dude, it’s a book for 8-9 year olds, the writing isn’t exactly gonna be Tolkien tier. The reason why people find it worth discussing is due to its fantastic use of strategy and puzzles, alongside the imaginative creature designs
>>88481701I want anime Thaegan to piss in my mouth
>>88477329>I want to suck on anime Jasmine's dirty, stinky toesBased, me too.>>88477348Loved the books when I was a kid, not sure how they hold up now. There are audiobooks if that's more your speed. How were the 2nd and 3rd series? I honestly had no idea they came out, figured everything wrapped up perfectly with part 1 and moved on to other books.

>>88481986The dog and the accordion player, the bird and the butterfly, the horse and its masterThats all i got rip me
>>88486671I love that you never see it coming because the entire first half of Forests of Silence is set from Jared's POV, so when the timeskip hits and we meet Lief, "Jared's" son, we accept it at face value If memory serves, the anime does this in a flashback episode with "Jared" recounting his story to Lief. In that episode, to keep up the illusion, "Endon'' looks remarkably similar to a certain scarred man. Ideally they would've never shown "Endon" or "Sharn's" faces in full, but sacrifices must be made in the translation to visual mediums
>>88481986I think i got itAccordion player + dancing dog (The player is heavily robed and the dog is covered in spots. Pretty easy.)Any combination of the two birds and two butterflies.Mother + child (the mother is heavily robed and the kid appears to have a mark on their foot)Now to stalk all eight simultaneously and wait three days for The Tremor.

>>88488441Only really in Maze of the Beast and Return to Del he also lands the killing blow to the monster protecting the Sister of the SouthHe does show up in the anime and is even more inhuman in appearance there, doing crazy shit like travelling several kilometres to BTFO a pansy-ass wizard and wrestling with Ichabod, strongest of Thaegan’s brood
>>88482096[21st Century Schizoid Man]
>>88486399I know, right? Rodda obviously took inspiration from the fact that she lives in Australia in that regard.
>>88477063I've run several games in the setting and it's a lighthearted blast every time. Most of my players have never read the books, so it's a blast to half to give them Secrets of Deltora as an over the top in game handout. One player actually read it and learned the setting and kept the team alive. What good times.
>>88477348Absolutely read the books. They're short and simplistic as most children's literature is, but the anime in no way does anything justice. Admittedly the writer's effort goes chiefly into creature descriptions, but if nothing else that's worth the readNow. Wider question time. You choose to replace one iconic monster in your system of choice with a deltora quest creature. What you choose, and why?I would replace dragons with Wennbar, and have the wenn take over kobolds
>>88486631>How were the 2nd and 3rd series? Each one gets a little more contrived. Second series is about dealing with a shadow lord contingency left in place should he be ousted. It works and is only a little bit of a stretch, considering he seems to work a lot like Sauron and most of his minions died when he withdrewSeries 3 is overall kind of pointless. Short, disconnected from the world you know. It's only point of note is Glock Fucking Dies in book 1
>>88490215Ya got it the wrong way around, DQ2 was the underground seas beneath Deltora where Glock fucking died to a old as dirt nautilus, DQ3 covered the Shadow Lord’s overly complicated contingency plan
>>88491760I.. checked this before posting. It's not the end of the world, but I'd have sworn they saved the underground BS for the end-of-series. Though, thinking back on it, the ending with the dragons had a lot more actual ending to it
>>88493053By looking at the greater scale of things, the plot looks like this:>Deltora Quest: Gathering the Belt to evict The Shadow Lord, ending his tyranny and restoring peace>DQ 2: Venturing into a long-forgotten network of caverns to sneak below the mountains and infiltrate the Shadowlands, attempting to rescue the countless people dragged away there during the Shadow Lord’s reign.>DQ 3: Dealing with the contingency plans left behind by the Shadow Lord, cleansing the land of his corruption once and for all.I don’t blame you for mixing up 2 and 3, because venturing into enemy territory and blasting a belt-boosted pipe in his ethereal face feels like endgame, but nah, it’s the end of the second major story arc, go burn some singing rocks with dragon flame lmao.
I nevcer realised Rohan of Rin was also in the same setting. That also had the same level of random nature fuckery and weird cultures.
>>88493605I haven’t read any of Rodda’s works past The Three DoorsDid she canonise Rowan into Deltora’s universe?
>>88493656Yes, the islands are to the west of Deltora. This was not revealed until 2012.
>>88493556I still really dig the sisters scheme. It's a clever enough long play and while the need to layer on a grey goo scenario feels pointless now. It's still a good one. This is something for a post-campaign game.

>>88477063Which Deltora monster is your favorite and why? The Glus is mine, personally, in part because of that rhyme.
>>88499488So much Glusposting in this thread. I think it’s because it’s the one that really sticks in the mind due to its design and the aforementioned poem. However, Gorl will always be my favorite because of the badass armor.
>>88499559The last Deltora thread had bumpfag all over it as well, and the Glus was the only one they consistently brought up as well. You can tell the bumpfag by the way they contribute literally nothing from the actual series that isn't immediately already supported in the thread, they have zero original thought.

>>88477063Would you prefer to play in the book continuity or the anime one?
>>88477063I remember it being surprisingly dark for a children's book series. Loved it to bits when I was young though, still have all the books except most of the worldbuilding ones. Most of the places and beasts were so icky when I was a kid, I wonder how I'd feel about them nowadays.
>>88482010theres a reason this overgrown lettuce eater is my favourite.
>>88506859Book. A lot of the series charm is in it's art and creature descriptions. The Ol as depicted in the anime really lacks that "hateful specter wrought in white fire" quality >>88506763>Any splash, any real sound will attract it>>88507164It deals with some surprisingly dark themes. A king in a children's fantasy series should be wise and beloved. Seemingly native to Deltora and untouched by an external power. Nothing grew it, nothing created it. It's just one of the worlds natural horrors

I hunted down Numenora (on release was hard to get in Aus) to try and homebrew a DQ game with it, but asking around the RPG folk I knew at uni couldn't find enough people who knew the source material enough to put in the effort to make that work. What do y'all think about removing the wiz class from Numenora to make a Deltora Quest 'brew? The other thing i was always scared of was just how that reduces players to two choices for class, kinda sucks.
>>88504730Australian children’s authors have a habit of that, it seems. It blew my mind when I reread Lirael and took a closer look at the Dog’s first words.
>>88519687holy shit I’m dyingfukkin saved
>>88488644>wrestling with Ichabod, strongest of Thaegan’s broodPretty sure this is in the books.
>>88499559He was pretty cool, yeah. Shame we only really see him in the first book and the monsters book and don't develop his character more.
>>88524300Tales of Deltora gave him a bit more fluff, mainly that he was a Jalis knight who set out with his friends to get some nectar from the Lillies of Life. Considering he’s a hollow shell and there’s no other undead sets of armour around, I’m pretty sure you can fill in the blanks
>>88527631Can you imagine the hissy fit he would have thrown if the Lilies ever managed to bloom and he realized that he had no mouth to drink the nectar with? Not to mention how he was stupid enough to forget that plants need light to glow, and his vines were blocking out the sun.
>>88531026>know that the Lillies only have enough nectar for one man, takes his friends anyways>seething rage over loosing the Lillies nectar allows him to persist after death, doesn’t realise it and wastes away until he’s a spirit possessing his centuries-old armour>fortifies the Lillies’s little section of the Forest with his new whack plant control powers, failed basic biology so he doesn’t realise that it’ll just prevent the Lillies from blooming>a fucking totem gem manages to land in his little meadow via Ak-Baba, but rather than actually use it, he just slaps on his swords pommel.Gorl’s an actual retard, holy shit
>>88531822>Topaz strengthens ones awareness of the spiritual worldBy rights Gorl should have realized he was already dead and zero sum'd himself
>>88534181But yet he didn’t Typical JalisNo wonder those buffoons were considered extinct
>>88477063Hey, do you think that that rhyme about the origins of the Glus is true? And if so, might Enna still be down there, could that be a good plot hook?
>>88542132She’s either entombed at the very heart of the Maze, or served as adequate Glus chow.Point is, no way in hell is she still alive.
>>88477063I still have the dragon necklace I got from scholastic Deltora would be great for tabletop because a lot of the adventures were solved through wits, items, and riddles
>>88542409I was asking because of the "where Enna sleeps" part of the rhyme. Also, why hasn't someone tried sealing up the Maze so that nothing can get in, causing the Glus to starve?
>>88478948This is what I loved about deltora quest. As far as kid's books go it feels like it does horror very well. Lief and even barda, an experienced fighter never really have success in combat. It feels realistic in a sense. The heros arent superhuman fighters tasking down 20 orcs at a time, and something like Vraals are scary as shit to even consider taking on with a sword. You'd just get slaughtered. If you want a deltora style campaign then fighting should be dangerous and discouraged akin to the CoC rpg system, and monsters should have ways of being defeated via outsmarting them, using the environment and solving puzzles etc.
>>88543916Ironically I’d say that the Glus is best kept alive, damn thing pretty much single handedly protects Deltora’s upper western coasts from being swamped by Kobb like the coasts of Jalis territory. That, and I doubt that dropping the cave on it would kill it, given it’s regenerative prowess, capability of slipping through disturbingly small gaps, and likely having extremely low energy expenditure via its highly patient hunting strategy.
>>88534181>>88531822My theory is that Gorl actually died at the same time his brothers did, slain by the wounds they inflicted even as he killed them. As for the totem gem thing, remember, he was last out of the forest before Adin’s time, so it’s entirely possible that he never heard of the Topaz of what it could do.
>>88477063How do the Wenn and Wennbar rate as monsters? I feel like they should have shown up more.
I always liked how badass the Jalis were described as. This tribe of warriors where they wear heavy armor and deal with plants that kill normal people.
>>88479648You know, I don't think I've ever seen anyone else (not related to me) talk about Myth Adventures in my entire life. Brings me back. I should reread those someday. (And Deltora Quest of course, but I've seen that discussed a few times before)
>>88477264>The Anglosphere Cringe. We aren't the same thing weirdo.
>>88552802The anime just made them these feral looking dudes with hunched backs, exaggerated cainines, claw like nails, and jawlines capable of cutting glass.
>>88555371How would you have depicted them then?
>>88555993Get rid of the more hunched apperance but keep the cainines and nails. Make them tall as fuck too, Gorl was a Jalis and he was fucking huge.
>>88482170The level of sheer murderousness among the flora and fauna gives me Dark Sun vibes.
>>88481879>Nine of them>Travel in pairsHow though Is one guy just constantly on call?
>>88556412I interpreted it as four pairs plus Reece.Three pairs do other shit, while the final pair travels alongside him, and since Reece never leaves Noradz, the only thing the normies know is that they travel in pairs, and that there's supposedly nine of them.

>>88560306Laughing Jack is pretty cool with his ghost-casino-pirate ship, and the Masked Ones are horrifying once the (metaphorical) mask comes off. >>88477063Which Gem is your favorite in the series? What about your favorite tribe?
>>88562997Topaz is best, dude was lucky for starting with that

>>88562997Topaz is the best because it has the most direct usage out of all the gems, since it grants you immunity to illusions, the ability to contact the dead, and immunity to any dream fuckery that isn't your own.Opal comes in a very close second though, future sight is busted, no ifs or buts about it.
>>88546620>Sire, the Glus is loose>>88547158If memory serves, Gorl slew his brothers by treachery? I can't remember if there was a full-blown fight or if he just hacked them down. As for the gem?
