The previous thread had a really large amount of engagement on not only discussion on how to world build for a Magical Girl themed campaign, but also genre conventions, how to run with Kamen Riders, and stories from GMs who've successfully ran a Magical Girl themed campaign. So let's keep this party going; how would you prepare and run for a Magical Girl themed campaign /tg/?
By ripping off Persona, honestly.
>>87612096Previous thread for anyone wanting to continue discussion from it: >>87563268
>>87612110Really? Why persona?
>>87612096I'm new to TTRPG's and trying to wrap my head around the concept of transformations and power ups. I'd love to run a magical girl game, go Tokusatsu like Symphogear or do Kamen Rider and stuff. But I feel like transformations and powerups could be fun mechanically and add a sense of empowerment or danger depending on how they function.
Imagine a magical girl scenario wherein only VTubers have become magical girls.Instead of everyday school and family life being the mundane side of things, the characters have to deal with the rrat- and yab-laden reality of the VTuber scene.
>>87614001no imagine the reverse where regular magical girls have become v tubers/idols that makes much more sense
>>87613598The way I'm doing transformations/Power Ups using L5R 5e is that the PCs will summon a "Regalia" made up of certain weapons and armor with a successful Performance check. A non-element base form has a low TN and can use any ring for the check while more powerful elemental forms will require a specific ring to summon. This works because equipment isn't directly to PC/NPC power and is somewhat tiered between Commoner gear/Samurai gear/War gear. Various clothing is also considered armor so I can make a basic Magical Girl Battle Dress by upgrading Ceremonial Clothes (Physical Resist 1, Ceremonial*, Resplendent**) to "Physical Resist 3, Supernatural Resist 2, Ceremonial, Resplendent" with later upgrades having greater Resistances and additional traits. *Trait that indicates that an item can be used to identify the owner/user.**Trait that increases the Glory gained for actions performed by the user.
>>87614001>picWhat is this fetish called?
>how would you prepare and run for a Magical Girl themed campaign /tg1. A love letter to the genre, so more Sailor Moon and Cardcaptor Sakura, and then some PreCure.2. Fabula Ultima is the closest thing to a system I can think of.3. (First) main antagonist is a dimensional conquering witch, the mascot(s) and a (possibly playable) princess are refugees on Earth. The PCs would encounter the servants of said main villainess first, each with a unique relationship tying them to her: one is brainwashed or blackmailed into servitude, one is in love with her, one just wants to replace her... something like that.4. Players would have to be committed to play schoolgirls.
>>87612096>how would you prepare and run for a Magical Girl themed campaign /tg/?I would not prepare at allI will improvise it entirely and completely based off my mood and whatever tropes or cliches I can think of at the time
>>87619872Mothers can be magical girls too.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gHMV_UWKCCoSometimes they have weapon spirits who are more like ageless grannies, but they still look nice, and you can correction rape those spirits too.Once the weapon spirits are correction raped, they subtlety begin to troll the MILF and her transformations become lewder and lewder until they are actually completely defenseless and unprotected.
>>87621534The vast majority of modern Magical Girls are Middle School to High School. While there are occasional shows like Ojamajo Doremi, which focuses on a group of elementary school girls, most tend to focus on Middle School and older girls with the occasional elementary school "little sister" character like Chibiusa.Various series can draw their girls looking younger or older as well.
>dino-themed magical girl whose mascot is a plush dino that can turn into a real oney/y?
>>87621905Based autist magical girl
>>87622311Also she's 20
precure cute and funny megucaormadoka dark and existential meguca?
>>87612096a bunch of adult men sitting around a table pretending to be little japanese schoolgirlssounds super hetero sexual
>>87622893The last thread had people trying to talk about playing it more like Symphogear with mature characters, or adults, and even like male characters who aren't magical girls but are wizards or Kamen Riders who support them. There was a retard who got angry at us for even suggesting these things.
>>87622893Well good news then you can now justifiably play a middle school magical boy considering that the newest Precure has a boy one of the main Cures.
>>87622965I think your premise sets up a kind of older brother/young sister dynamic. Very cute and wholesome. The Kamen Riders could go after the bigger bads while the Mahou Shojos could go after their cohorts or so.
>>87623228Damn it I wish I knew how to draw cause I would make this a little thing. There's lots of potential here.
>>87623228If the MotW are corrupted/transformed civilians you could even have big brother Kamen Rider fighting to weaken the MotW so that little sister Precure can purify them.
Last post for now cause I don't wanna samefag the shit out of this thead but I think a good inspiration for this would be Lucifer and the Biscuit Hammer.>>87623262Incredibly based.
>>87623473Yes, meet Cure Wing. He is the 3rd main cure of the series with the 4th being Cure Butterfly, the new record holder for oldest active Cure at 18.
>>87623621Forever proving that one faggot last thread wrong; men can be in magical girl franchises, and fit perfectly.
>>87623822>men can be in magical girl franchises, and fit perfectly.I'm sorry, but WTF? Shows not aimed at older male fans will feature at least one hot dude.Heck, even shows aimed at older male fans will often feature male characters.
>>87624363We said exactly that. The fucker complained about people wanting to play men in a game.
>>87614016Wouldn’t that risk their secret identities? They have those, right?
>>87625040reverse search is your freind
>>87616020No that's just anime in general
>>87621905Unironically based concept
>>87621905There is space for sharks there, so I am fine.
>>87623621haha boys can't fight without girls rescuing them
>>87625802Not everybody can be as fly as Mamuro Chiba.
So the Accidental Magical Girl CYOA looks to have developed into a pretty interesting, reasonably complete RPG, at least with the combat skills addition that was linked last thread. I was around in the middle phase of development (I created the Black Coin add-on with the roll-your-own Monster Girls and Metal element spec that later got absorbed into the whole) but got bored with it before it reached its final state and fucked off again for a while. Anyone tried playing it for more than a one shot or two?
>>87623621>First male Cure>Call him Cure Wing>Make him look like a chicken>Is a femboyThis guy's literally just Cure Cock, oh my godThey HAD to know what they were doing.
>>87630689he's also a fairy bird
>>87615422breast envy, breast smothering, assymetrical docking, height difference, smug girls,
>>87616958>>87630901>breast envyWe need the opposite term named.Something akin to Breast Bullying. Something that expressed the "in-your-face" nature of the bullying.
>>87631706I think the term was Mogging
>>87612096How do you design magical girl uniforms/outfits? Especially if it's a more serious setting and you want to avoid dresses full of ruffles and lace and shit like that.
>>87634686The picture you used and Symphogear are more armored looking. I like that sorta look. The frills and dresses are fine for the more kid appropriate shows though, like Precure.
>>87634686>>87634833There's also Nanoha. Actually surprised at the previous thread's lack of Nanoha.
>>87630689If I was the producer I would slide a line of dialogue in about him being well endowed
>>87623228Ironically I'm setting up an older brother and younger sister dynamic in a Magical Girl game rn. Brother is a hyper intelligent engineer making himself a superhero suit, while I'm playing the magical girl in this game.
>>87635554GM here. I should mention that the PC is a henshin fan who became a magical girl, while he’s a magical girl fan who became a henshin
>>87634833Yeah, that's kind of what I was going for. >>87634981Why do you think that that is? Also, what's a good way to balance looking good and combat effectiveness for magical girl outfits in settings like these?
>>87612096Why aren’t magical boys as common as magical girls, and what are some some interesting things that can be done with them? Also, what are some good in-setting reasons why girls would be chosen to defend the world like that anyway?
Remember - if only girls can be heroes, then only boys can be villains.
>>87614167Did 5e get rid of the death spiral? I played 4e and it never felt like it would be good for the generally high power level of a magical girl game, combat was always risky.
>>876396115e is pretty much a completely different system from 4e and earlier. >Did 5e get rid of the death spiral?Yes, and kind of no. Wounds have been replaced with Endurance, Fatigue, the Lightly/Severely Wounded conditions and Scar disadvantages.Endurance is a stat derived from Fire+Earth that measures their stamina and of how well a character can defend themself. Normal Strikes and various other stuff inflicts Fatigue. If Fatigue exceeds Endurance, a character becomes Incapacitated and can not perform actions that require checks nor defend against further damage.Being unable to defend against an attack inflicts a Critical Strike that vary in Severity based on the Deadliness of the weapon/attack (A basic punch has a Deadliness of 2 while a Katana has a Deadliness of 5 in a one handed grip and a 7 when wielded in 2 hands). The Severity of a Critical Hit varies between damaging destroying Armor (including clothes) at 0-2 to Instant death a 16+. The Severity of an Crit can be reduced with a Fitness Check based on the current stance the character is in.The "death spiral" is technically still there in the form of crits inflicting the Lightly Wounded and Severely Wounded conditions. If a crit inflicts Lightly Wounded on a ring you were resisting the crit with, the TNs of all checks made with that ring are increased slightly. If another crit inflicts Lightly Wounded on the same ring (or a crit directly inflicts a Sever Wound), Lightly Wounded is upgraded to Severely Wounded on that Ring while increase TNs by a significant amount. If you get another Light or Sever Wound on the Severely Wounded Ring you get a permanent Scar disadvantage for that ring. There is also an optional rule where you will start dying if you get two scars on the same ring. The Death Spiral still exists but is much harder to trigger in a single combat.
>>87638005>Why aren’t magical boys as common as magical girlsThey are extremely popular, they are just called Kamen Rider. The difference between magical girls and toku heroes is largely just one of aesthetic, their powers and formulas are largely identical. Shows like Symphogear recognize this and intentionally blur the line between the two.
>>87640726There's legit magical boy stuff, Kamen Rider isn't exactly the same there.
>>87638005>Why aren’t magical boys as common as magical girlsmagical girls began as role models for real life little girlsmagical boy series are either parodies of the former and/or shows pandering to highly specific fetishes (mtf crossdressing, mtf transsexualism, male homosexuality) which are not as common among young boys as their enthusiasts wish they were>what are some some interesting things that can be done with themas you ponder this question you will be tempted to drop the magical boy thing and do the harry potter one instead>what are some good in-setting reasons why girls would be chosen to defend the world like that anyway?in no particular order:1. the goddesses do not give their powers to males meme2. the otherwordly princesses are looking for female heirs meme3. the magical girls have a tradition to pass the torch to younger girls meme4. the (western) witches tend to be female meme5. the women are magical creatures meme6. the powers that be happen to like little girls a lot meme7. the love between two girls is a special kind of power meme8. the girls mature faster than boys meme9. the girls are more responsible than boys meme10. the girls are more innocent and pure than boys meme11. the show exists to sell toys to girls meme12. the there is no rational justification as to why one would recruit teenagers in general, and female ones in particular, in order to accomplish anything anywhere near as important as saving the world, but we do it anyway because we're combining a bunch of things we like meme
>>87638005>Why aren’t magical boys as common as magical girls, and what are some some interesting things that can be done with them?To have a solid magical boys story really work you need to do something focus on the romantic/social aspects. A Princess/Goddess/Saintess with a bishounen reverse harem that politics with each other about as much as they fight against an evil force can work without being a parody.Star Driver is a good example of a magic boy show. >>87640726While they do share some overlap Magical Girls and Toku Heroes do have places where they diverge. A lot of the difference is actually tied to gender roles and social interaction.
>>87638005Ultraman, those Sentai shows and all the Riders are all pretty popular.
>>87623228I once day-dreamed up that kind of story when I was bored.>monsters work by body-snatching people>state clearly that no two souls can inhabit a body>magical girl seemingly defeats big evil>grows up, has kids>but the second-in-command of the big bad is out for revenge and finds her>takes over her son, kills mother and father>years later, daughter awakens to inherited plot power>does magical girl stuff under guidance of magical girl aunt>fights different factions of monsters that arose in power vacuum >there's a mysterous dark knight type monster that helps her out occasionally>eventually get hints that the big bad survived and is slowly ammassing his forces again>pitched battle reveals the dark knight is MC's brother, who was a support character until now>big drama, the brother I loved was a lie, my whole family is dead, etc>MC runs off, lives with her friends for a few days>group debates wether to kill the brother>cut to monster on the way to redemption that infiltrated the MC's friend group>introduce the big bad and his elite monsters through their interaction with the returned second-in-command>big bad ready to go on the offensive with his pals back>elite monsters team up and overwhelm magical girls>but dark knights backstabs the monsters and allows the girls to eke out a win>reveal that the mother still managed to the save the brother's soul before dying>he's been using the power of the second-in-command to fight monsters and keep his sister save>big sappy family reuinion>brother and sister team up to take on the big bad once and for all>happy ending>MC has the friends she always wanted and feels loved by her parents>brother gets over being an edgelord and gets together with the childhood friend support characterThe most entertaining part for me were the interactions between the villains and the brother having to bullshit his way through that until standing in front of the dark lord.
>>87642903That is a very solid plot overview for a combo Toku Hero/Magical Girl series.
>>87642267>little girlsmagical boy series are either parodies of the former and/or shows pandering to highly specific fetishes (mtf crossdressing, mtf transsexualism, male homosexuality) which are not as common among young boys as their enthusiasts wish they wereThe Madoka trannies are proof enough of this.
>>87634981Never heard of it.
The last magical girl game I played sucked ass, but I liked the concept enough that I want to play a game or DM one sometime in the future. What's some stuff to keep in mind?
>>87646728What happened to your last game?
>>87646819Essentially the DM was a midwit. The first thing he thought teenaged girls would do with magic powers fighting grief monsters was become mercenaries and shit? Like he made a magical girl system with an urban fantasy style hidden magical world and basically ignored most of it to focus on what was basically Tom Clancy fanfiction.Like, I wanted to go on magical adventures and figure out my ancient Arthurian past. However the DM became obsessed with us fighting random gangsters and shit in his cyberpunk setting and teleported my character to future Mars because players in his Mars game kept leaving and he wanted me to plug in the gap. So I left the game.
>>87638005>Also, what are some good in-setting reasons why girls would be chosen to defend the world like that anyway?I like the explanation from Madoka that magic is created by emotion, and adolescent girls are the most emotional humans, hence why they're chosen to be magic users.
>>87622965I once toyed with an idea for a story like that. One one hand we have more "traditional" Magical Girls are government-funded occult/magic-based teenagers, rooted in old occult groups tied with government like Golden Dawn, Onmyouji/Shrine Maidens, Chinese taoist priestess/cultivators. They worked along side Sentai/Power Rangers team which are tied with police force, emergency responders and military organization with more tech-based powers. On the other hand, we have freelancers and individuals heroes who are newer/darker take on magical girls, who discovered power on their own and usually groups of friends/club at school who distrusted governments, Kamen Rider-esque heroes are individual who, like Showa and Heisei, got in contact with evil sources of power but retained their humanity or stealing said power to fight for their own justice, who don't want government red tapes got in the way.Of course, the evil side is the amalgamation of evil organizations, aliens, and cults bending on world destruction.
>>87612096What's the best way to come up with interesting villains for magical girl campaigns? What makes a good magical girl villain, particularly if you want one that has more complex motivations than "I'm evil, so I'm going to hurt a bunch of innocent people just because"?
>>87647269If the core of a magical girl is their bonds, then a villain should seek to be a breaker of bonds.
>>87647269>sister/mother or gf who are magical girl who died in the line of duty, betrayed by a fellow (evil) magical girl>now he wanted to de-power all magical girls, believing that relieving them of their duties would be a better alternative
There was another thread aboout magical girls and I got lost. But I did make this green text there, do you guys mind giving it a read? Someone was spazzing out about the kamen riders and wizards of the first thread and mentioned grizzled war vets, so it gave me this idea.>Be me, Grizzled War Vet. Came back from the war, marrried a beautiful wife and have the cutest 15 year old daughter.>Be a bit of a paranoic, dealing with a bit of PTSD, and now apparently there are monsters in town fighting with magical girls. See wife, THIS is why I bought a SAW with grenade launcher attachment from the black market.>Worst off all I think my daughter has been getting rebellious, she's coming home late, spending most nights at one or another of her friends... Is she on drugs? Does she have a boyfriend? Must investigate.>Decide to follow daughter after school. She meets a group of friends from school in an arcade. Didn't even know arcades were still a thing. Then she goes to the house of one of them. She was telling the truth, what a relief.>Wait, whose voice is that? It's in the room with them and it's not the girls family. Just a peek in the window... It's a flying talking animal. Oh ok.>WHAT!?! That's gotta be one of the monsters. Pull my concealed carry handguns and jump through the window>Daughter get down I'll save you!>Dad, no!>Explanations ensue.>This motherfucker enlisted my daughter and her friends in some magic war. She's not even 18!>She doesn't even have a magical gun, seven years of training and this magic thingie doesn't even have a gun. And the rest of these girls aren't even trained in combatives or survivalism or first aids. Shoddy work by this guardian thing.>On the one hand, proud of her for killing things and protecting people. On the other, mad because she hid this from me.>Now to figure out to help them both with training and in the battlefield.>Wonder if my old contact can still get me those RPGs.
>>87647807The fag in question spazzed out again in a different thread. Pretty pathetic tbfh.
>>87648249Hey, it kept the other thread from getting archived overnight for a bit. So I won't complain. Wish I had gotten up a just a little earlier to post before it went past page 10. Also, would anyone care if I just continued greentexting that Madoka Mechanicus thing here? Wouldn't want to spam the thread if no one was enjoying it.
What's a threat that would be big enough to bring two different kinds of heroes together? Kamen Riders are heroes of justice fighting in the shadows of society to keep the peace, but Magical Girls are defenders of peace who fight openly. Perhaps a grave threat neither can ignore is worth looking into...
Is there a rule against Magical Girls having a big fuck off robot to fight Kaiju with? The answer? No. Magical Girls can have a big fuck off Mecha to fight Kaiju with.
>>87649096Based fellow Rayearth enjoyer
>>87648329I'd say just make a second Madoka Mechanicus thread since it's a specific story and not a discussion.
>>87647269Emotional connection with the protagonists, as in villains going after the people and things the magical girls care about>>87648873>What's a threat that would be big enough to bring two different kinds of heroes together? The powers of both heroes, but turned into an evil distortion of them, combined and then slightly increased, given to a single major villain, and also distributed in a group of more numerous, lesser vilains>who fight openlyDepends on the series, precure usually manage to keep their identities secret but there have been exceptions
>>87649096Well that takes me back.
>>87649316Evil Kamen Riders definitely exist. Just look at Evol for proof enough of that. I don't have enough experience with magical girl stuff to know how often evil Magical Girls show up though.
>>87649554Sailor Moon alone did it over and over, including antagonistic teams of 4-5 girls. PreCure does it too with what are essentially evil clones of the protagonists, I have a soft spot for these, and corruption.
>>87649631Then it definitely works.
>>87649631Witches 5 is the one that comes to mind when it comes to evil teams. Specifically the anime version, where they all start backstabbing each other. It serves as a good contrast to the heroines, though that might be unsatisfying to play.
>>87650436since this is about villains, it's perfectly ok if they're bitches to one another, let the villains show what happens when the powers of friendship, love and forgiveness aren't present
>>87650460If you really want to give the protagonist/PCs trouble, show what happens when the villains DO have some of that nakama energy going on. One of the backstories I came up with (and then never used) was that the nominal PC I was making was actually "destined" to be a theisdekick to the main heroine, but the Dark Kingdom had found her first and instead of Pretty Laser she was now Dark General Ultra Violet, whose minions never fought to the death because escaping meant they got healed so they'd know how to fight better another time, and were hard to spot in the first place because they had training in how to fit in with modern society, and mission assignments that favored long-term results over immediate gain. Pretty Laser Neo eventually won by flipping Ultra Violet to her side, becasue the Dark Queen kept ordering short-sighted bullshit to get a payday now-now-now without caring that it meant the minions involved would be sacrificed, bringing most of the surviving minion army with her to the protagonists' side, since enough of her native plant-based powers were intact to let her grow spirit fruit trees that could support them without needing to drain life energy from people/animals/things with a mind to be bothered about it in general. (Then Laser Neo was supposed to get issekaied to have further adventures, but that never materialized.)And no, captcha. she didb't have an invisible car, or as you put it, XR4Y V8
>>87650460Well yeah, but its probably not as fun when you go up to fight one of the bitches, only for one of her own allies to gank her and run away.
>>87652593She wouldn't gank on her "colleague" just before the heroes get a shot... she would talk shit, refuse to help her and berate her when she fails. And when it comes to proper betrayal, make it subtle, like being in charge of weapons maintenance, only to give her less than perfect weaponry for the job.You should think more of the main villainess as kind of a harem queen and her lieutenants as trying to win the "game", not by any means, but by almost any means.
>>87652593That is why the Executives backstab each other in "subtle" ways. You give each of the executives a conflicting goal with only one final winner (an example goal is that a bunch of dark magical girls are competing to be the dark lord's wife), and then have various executives give hints to the magical girls in order to stop the current monster/mission of the week that is being headed by another exec.
>>87612096I ended up playing a magical girl character in a non magical girl focused game.>Sword and sorcery setting but with guns>Game is essentially isekai, but the players are mercs, soldiers and other military adjacent professions>Most real life inspired, some from fiction>Absolutely everything went sideways, multiple world ending threats, political missteps have seen the party reviled by the natives they were summoned into the world to help>Morale tanking, material support evaporating, no hope for victory in sight>Decide to play a magical girl straight, 13, very girly and cheerful, full opposition to the general gritty tone of the game>Pull a lot of inspiration from joan of arc for how to run her>Technically a child soldier, humorously pointed out by the character herself in a child's naive way>Functions as a combined bard fighter mage>Act as the party's collective daughterfu and mascot for morale purposes>Political game getting better because voice of reason/innocence>Combat game more stable because party now has a buffer/healer anti-mystical memberPlaying her has been a blast, so far, and I'm gonna be real sad when I have to put her down. She plays much like any other multiclass, with the exception being that she can't use any equipment beyond jewelry whatsoever. Weapons and outfit are summoned and entirely dependent on level and stats, the upside being she cannot ever be disarmed unless subjected to anti-magic effects, which leave her in a 'dead' state since she's a madoka magica style magical girl with a phylactery, rather than being blessed by a higher power like a paladin.
>>87652718So what I’m hearing is, either have her cohorts subtly soften her up for the PCs or have the PCs soften her up and then have the opposing villainess(es) deal the finishing blow.

Since his goal is to not let magical girls fight/hurt too bad and just take their power, I don't think he'd try to recruit any. There are two ways you can spin this plot, he hated all magical girls because someone killed his MG gf/sister/mother so now he believed that magical girls don't deserve the power granted to them.Or since his MG got killed, he didn't want any girls suffered the same fate so chose to take away those magical girls' powers.

What kind of combination attacks do your magical girls do together?
>>87612096Just read half the previous thread and already started writing a campaign premise about all kinds of things transforming into magical girls on their way to become Real Humans™. All kinds of things including, of course, children (who don’t feel like they are complete humans yet and probably not treated like it) and useless members of society (who wish they could start over and have a "normal" life). What kind of social life would a PC group consisting of completely separate non-members of society have? Do they only communicate over chat groups? Do they show up once a session to crash a "real life" problem that one of them has? Do they keep their true forms hidden from each other?
>>87661665>What kind of social life would a PC group consisting of completely separate non-members of society have? The bare minimum that would get them food, shelter and an education, otherwise they won't be having a life at all, let alone a normal one.

>>87672899Maybe they just hate each other organically. A strong bully and a backstabbing nerd could easily form a Megatron/Starscream relationship. Meanwhile the rich, bitchy girl could’ve had slave-holding ancestors in the past (not why she’s evil), putting her at odds with the black girl (who is also evil). Maybe their mascot is turning them against each other so that when their good counterparts are gone, they won’t immediately turn on him. Or maybe one’s a pothead and the other’s normal (if a psychopath).
>>87612096What happens when a magical girl reaches adulthood in your setting? Do they lose their powers, retire from active duty, or what? And what are some good in-setting reasons why girls who aren't even 18 would be chosen by mystical forces to save the world?

>>87674152>Then there's one guy who's not really evil, it's just the only job he can find in this economy>He avoids doing anything cruel and too evil and legitimately has nothing against the heroes, it's just part of his job
>>87674386They become mentor types to younger magical girls. They don't lose their powers, but they become less potent in a sense in that they're less capable of pulling a clutch moment out of their ass because of their adult mindset. Logic starts overriding their boundless sense of hope and joy, and more specifically their realistic expectations and assessment of situations starts to settle in as they get older, as a result, their powers are far more methodical, at the cost of being much less 'magical' since they have much more rigid ideas of what's possible, whereas a younger magical girl has no fucking clue.I don't think magical girls should be chosen past 18 because of the above, since saving the world typically requires clutch moments and unpredictability as a matter of course.
>>87679663I think adult magical girls can exist, they just end up becoming legends like the Sentai teams of the past. Maybe we could even have a Gokaiger situation here.

>>87612096I'm a total outsider to the magical girl genre outside of a few episodes of Sailor Moon I watched way back in the day. Why exactly do these magical and/or alien beings give teenage girls superpowers to fight magical monsters anyways? Seems to me giving superpowers to teenagers and telling them to fight aliens is a bad idea.
>>87680352Same reason giving emotionally immature teenage boys magic powers and go tell them "go be the best" is a bad idea.
>>87680468I'm just asking. What is the motivation for giving these human girls powers?
>>87680352Different series give different reasons.Sailor Moon ran on the idea that Usagi was the reincarnation of an ancient magic moon princess/queen with the rest of the girls being her royal guards. Usagi's powers were awakened in order to let her defend herself from those seeking to capture/kill her.Madoka runs off the idea that the mascots are from an alien civilization using the girls emotional energy to slow down entropy and the magical girls fighting monsters that are fallen magical girls is part of the energy harvesting system.
I wish the Fabula Ultima meme would die. Which part of it is suited for a magical girl show?
>>87680352There rarely is a reason outside the meta one of "we are selling this show to little girls", but when it does happen it tends to be something about the power of belief and innocence, the preteens the magic animals bond with being the only ones who can percieve them and/or the bad guys in the first place.
>>87680352Hey, if it worked out for Zordon, why not copy his winning formula?

I want to run something for my friend who is into shonen type anime, I'm thinking something that is a blend of Madoka Magika in terms of story, but system-wise closer to My Hero Academia. Should I go full superhero and use MASKs? Or is there something that has more of a magical feel to it, where their powers are granted through magic, essentially giving players a "magic powers" battery.
>>87682117If he's more of a shounen guy, unironically try to ape off Symphogear more than Madoka. It's the perfect mix of Shounen and Mahou Shoujo tropes.
>>87682117Define what Meguca parts you're interested in because while Mask may do the drama parts wellish, it may be a bit too constrained within its Young Justice framework
>>87683370I'm quite honestly ripping off Madoka Magika. My idea is that the party will be high schoolers, and they will encounter a strange rabbit. The rabbit will offer them magic powers of their choice in exchange that the players will help the rabbit. They'll have a soul gem, a "magic battery" that contains the amount of magic power they have remaining, and they need to refill that battery on missions that the rabbit gives them. The objective of each mission will be a magic book or something that refills their gems, and if their gems run out they go unconscious or perhaps die. Also the rabbit is secretly evil and the books hold some kind of sinister purpose. Perhaps the rabbit is an extension of some eldritch monster beneath the earth that is trying to get free.

>>87686097>fabula points correctly simulate the sudden, hugely overpowered bullshit that is also found in anime and not just in the jrpgs it's directly inspired by (to the surprise of no one since said jrpgs are heavily influenced by fantasy anime)Fair, I would add that Ultima points work in the same way except for villains>the players contribute to the making of the world and relationships directly, useful for magical girls which are the diametrical opposite of murderhobosWhich is by no means unique to Fabula, in which rather than generating the small context wherein the story usually takes place in Mahou Shojo, you are supposed to design the entire world from scratch. Sounds overkill. >fabula ultima's "characters are multiclass by default" job system helps with making playing characters can fight in various ways like they do in madoka and symphogear, i.e.: fists, swords, guns instead of just variously colored beamspamYes and none of these jobs match well with the concept of a mahou shoujo/henshin hero. >>87716037Yikes that's a lot of guns. What's her deal again?>>87718097Details for those of us who don't watch it please.
>>87719879The first episode of the series starts with a stadium full of tens of thousands of people all suddenly being killed and turned to carbon ash in agonizing ways by a random army of monsters, one of the two introduced magical girls sacrificing her life to stop the invasion and literally disintegrating in the arms of the other one, the main character getting a chunk of a superweapon stabbed near her heart and having to undergo years of physical therapy to recover, and so on. The world is under constant threat of monsters that appear seemingly without rhyme or reason that kill everyone with a single touch, and the magical girls of the setting can barely deal with small attacks let alone big ones. Also, there's only one (there were two, but the other one sacrificed her life. And there will be two again, once the main character awakens her powers). It's a happy show full of lesbian undertones, singing, and can-do attitude. The series is not afraid to say "absolute fucking horrifying shit is going on, there's danger on every side, and sometimes there's no happiness to be found in a given situation." It's also not afraid to say "even so, life is worth living and you should be happy anyways".
>>87719879>Yikes that's a lot of guns. What's her deal again?Orphan, captured and used as a sex slave as a child, rescued/enslaved by the first main villain where she was used as a disposable minion/sex slave, then befriended via punching and feeding her convenience store meals until she worked alongside the other megucas to fight the first main villain. From then on she became the Tsundere Gun Maiden. Her thing is guns. And missiles. And crossbows. And missiles And javelins fired from giant bows. And more missiles. And sniper rifles. But mostly missiles.God it's a lot of missiles.
>>87719879>Yikes that's a lot of guns. What's her deal again? Her deal is having big guns, having "big guns" and being best girl.
>>87720045Chris is the primary Gundam reference of the team, Hibiki is a Kamen Rider and Tsubasa is Samurai. Maria is pretty much a rival Kamen Rider, Shirabe and Kirika are more traditional magical girls in design with a few Gundam references thrown in.

>>87716037>>87717228I'll be honest, this isn't an opinion I feel strong enough to fight about, but the whole magical girl with guns thing just entirely flew past me in terms of want.Visually them using magical beams or blasts probably is not that distinctive from them just using a gun, but it feels so boringly mundane compared to them being magical creatures that it doesn't do it for me.

>>87728077>What's the source/reason for the monster attacks,There's multiple sources. So basically ancient humanity designed a bunch of ridiculous superweapons, and locked them away in a vault called the Gate of Babylon. These superweapons are the Noise, the random monsters the meguca fight. They're dimensional-shifting monsters that can't be hurt by normal means but will instantly kill a human being on contact, and the only way to hurt them is with a Symphogear. The Noise have occasionally leaked out of the Gate of Babylon throughout history, leading to mythological monster attacks, and have recently been leaking out in more and more numbers without seeming rhyme or reason. In truth, there's another superweapon (called a Relic) called Solomon's Cane; this Relic can control the Noise, and it's basically just ended up in the hands of the season 1 main villain who's been orchestrating a few attacks here and there to further her plans. There's actual random monster attacks sure, but most of the attacks shown on-screen are the villain's fault. In Season 2 Solomon's Cane ends up in the next main villain's hands, who uses it to go on random rampages because MEMES. At the end of the season the Megucas manage to steal Solomon's Cane and throw it into the Gate of Babylon itself, so no more Noise are coming through (in the anime. The CANONICAL mobile game is a different story). But that's alright, because literally every single antagonist from then on figures out how to make their own artificial Noise which are stronger and more dangerous than before. Because.>why so few defenders?Magical Girls in this series need to wield Relics, which are ancient mythological weapons augmented with song-based magitech. There's only a few usable Relics though, and even then you need to have a high compatibility to actually use them. If you don't, you start coughing up blood and literally disintegrate if you try to push your Relic too hard. >Also, singing? It's how they power them.
>>87728077>>87728194Because girls saving the world from soundforms with legendary weapons, DAKKA, and fat tits is peak Mahou Shoujo.
>>87728077>I hate it when shit like that happens, if it works why not use it more than once?Look, just because the Giant Scissior Doomba works doesn't mean it wasn't goofy and stupid as all hell. And this applies to a WIDE variety of Kirika and Shirabe's weapons. They work, but holy shit they really shouldn't.
>>87720512Aight, but magic guns that reload by booba is infinitely more based.
>>87728077>if it works why not use it more than once?Symphogear powers don't make sense. Thats not a critique, its a plot point. The person that MADE these things eventually lost against them because they didn't actually understand how they worked, and the people that wield them are actually better off not thinking about it because trying to impose reason and logic on their powers makes them weaker. The weird weapon powers and combos and shit happen in the heat of the moment, a Symphogear doing what came naturally for the situation they were in, and even they don't really know how they did it or if they could do it again on purpose. They just roll with it and move on, because if they *didn't* roll with it they never would have been able to pull off that move in the first place. The Symphogear will never do more than you ask of it, it will only ever do as much as you think it can do. So people with reasonable expectations are gimping themselves, while confident idiots are fucking dangerous.

>>87733585>And what makes her so confident?A belief in justice and a determination to fist. Also her lesbian girlfriend, for whom her feelings are so powerful that she can overcome the full power of an incarnate god and two thousand years of curses.
>>87734769What about the villains in Symphogear besides the Noise? How do they rate?
>>87739180I will exclude one very specific villain from the following list.>Fine: ancient human who somehow encoded her soul into genetics and reincarnated over and over throughout human history. Invented the Symphogears, accomplished Alchemist. First season Villain, wanted to blow up the moon because she wanted to reunite with her divine boyfriend and the moon was stopping her. Died at the end of Season 1, then was killed off for good in Season 2 for stupid drama reasons.>Chris: First Season Villain minion, tsun gun maiden, became a protagonist Magical Girl>Maria, Kirika, Shirabe: Season 2 Magical Girl villains, wanted to fix the moon that got knocked out of proper orbit and was going to destroy the world, did dumb villain things, eventually got punched straight and became protagonists. >Carol and the Autoscorers: Loli alchemist who watched her father burn at the stake in medieval times, hates the world and wants to destroy it for revenge. Made a cute loli clone of herself who would end up becoming a protagonist. Her season was the worst one, and the Autoscorers were really one-note, but she redeems herself in Season 5.>Bavarian Illuminati: Alchemists who want to attain divine power because their leader-a discarded prototype for humanity-was really angry at the gods and wanted to strike them down. The girls in the Illuminati don't know this and try to fight against the proto-human after learning it. Eventually sacrifice their life to stop a nuke and give the magical girls a powerup.>Noble Red: Second-stringer alchemists who are weaker and shittier, so they use a bunch of tricks and plans to stay in the game. Probably the most character and coolest theming, specifically because they're notably weaker than the protagonists rather than escalating the powerlevels.>Shem-Ha: POWERLEVELS GO BRRR; ancient deity possesses MC's girlfriend, Hibiki uses the Power of Gay to save her, it's actually really touching but she's still very flat (as a character).
>>87739180>>87739373And then there's the man. The myth. The legend.DOCTOR John Wayne Vercingetorix. Doctor Ver for short. The man of a million meme faces, he's one of the Season 2 villains. His greatest desire is to be the LAST ACTION HERO, and he's absolutely batshit insane. He'll happily go on murderous rampages because, likes to manipulate people, screams and cries when he begins to lose, turned the MC's girlfriend into an attack drone for a little bit because he was obsessed with the "romance" of it, and when he finally got control of Frontier he decided that nuking the planet was a REALLY good idea because then he'd be able to repopulate the entire planet himself! He gets brought back in Season 3 to first save Carol from her own incompetence and nearly destroy the world alongside her, only to turn on her and try to save the world-sacrificing his life to successfully stop Carol. Then he gets brought back in Season 4 to help Maria figure out how to create a special serum that lets the second-string Symphogear users actually use their gears (Maria, Kirika, and Shirabe can't use their Gears like the first three Symphogears can, and need a special medicine to actually be capable of it). He's just ridiculous, and either the best or worst thing about Season 2. There is absolutely no in-between.
>>87738132Same as usual, wasn't bringing in enough money. The story was a carbon copy of the anime, with added 'post-game' multiple universe shenanigans. (Gjallarhorn goes doot and whatnot, dead girlfriends show up, Why does Miku get to have TWO Hibikis?, also raised stakes and whatnot, I forget.)
>>87739395He sounds like the villain every magical girl tabletop needs.
>>87739925Oh absolutely Dr Ver is incredibly based.
>>87739373Ya know I keep forgetting Hibiki unironicqlly fought the illuminati. This show is insane and I love it.
>>87739405>Gjallarhorn goes doot and whatnot, dead girlfriends show up,Okay, I need some more information here please. What exactly happened?
>>87743404Gjallarhorn is an artifact that can open up parallel timelines. Such as theoretically a timeline where Tsubasa sang that day instead of Kanade.
So Zatanna Zatara is totally a Magical Girl, right?
>>87748252So, maybe the game and anime are just in parallel timelines then?
>>87739925He's the absolute best, yes
>>87750231Yes. While the anime never actually visits other timelines, one of the powers that shows up in the show depends on alternate timelines being real to work. So its sort of a situation where both the show and the game can exist side by side with semi-equal canonicity, they just are not canon to each other directly until such a time as a crossover explicitly happens.
>>87612096What are some good ways for magical girls to maintain a secret identity? I'd like it if more wore actual masks.
>>87762428I'd think that the transformation should add enough accessories, hair changes, and such to make it hard to know who it is exactly. If I played a game I might have a girl who just didn't give a shit about secret identity, people need saving.
>>87762428Codename Sailor V, the precursor of Sailor Moon, wore a mask
Lets talk about a system for these types of games. Do you think Savage World would be a valid option?
>>87763794Not much of a disguise. That's barely better than a certain reporter in reverse.>>87763013But then people might attack their loved ones to get to them.
>>87762428Before Magical Girl Warriors were popularized by Sailor Moon, one of a Magical Girl's primary powers was to Age Up. A 9 or 10 year old Elementary School Girl would transform into a 16+ year old "adult" form. This was more or less kept in most magical girl media, but the difference between a 13 year old and a 16 year old isn't as drastic a change as a 9 year old to 18 year old.
>>87767326I'd lean towards any system that runs fast with a minimum of dice rolls, rule referral and build autism to keep the pace going. So a modified sd6, no levels, just spend exp directly on skills and abilities unique to each character.

>>87768644Why was the whole age-up factor even a thing? Were they trying to appeal to both older and younger girls at once?
>>87772217It was originally their primary power and I believe it was actually focused around empowerment, showing girls the various jobs and duties they could/would have as an adult.Tezuka Osamu's Marvelous Melmo(1971) was somewhat an intro to sex education and the difficulty of being an adult as a 9 year old girl uses magic pills to age up to adulthood in order to replace her dead mother in raising her brothers.Minky Momo (1982) ran on the Momo aging to solve a problem by being the job of the week. You can actually see a bit of this in early Sailor Moons transformation power.
>>87772615I've never watched Sailor Moon, so I'll just take your word for it.
>>87772615The age up mechanic probably wouldn't serve much of a purpose in a game other than homage to early magical girl stuff. Since the whole genre is unironically based on Sabrina it never fails to make me kek, which didn't have that, it's just simpler to have them look their proper ages and wave away their enhanced physical abilities as pure magic powered. They should always have peak gymnast abilities by the way, just by default.
>>87774275>Since the whole genre is unironically based on SabrinaWhere’s that from? You mean the teenage witch Sabrina?
