This is a crowd sourced endeavor to create a setting and rpg.

What was produced is pic related, the setting of LEVIATHAN, the World of Sacred Oil and Broken Stone. The purpose of this thread is to organize to continue filling out the Lore Document, congregate for map making, and for developing an RPG system for this setting.

The story of the world is emergent, being developed as we discuss and explore the Compass. The Docs provides most in-depth explanations of most items, but the main conflicts of the setting are as follows:
> The Lapsarians have a secret Bargain with the Ocean Gods for Oil: A fuel source, the heart of the recent industrialization, and food-item which provides boons to those who consume it, though at a cost
> The Durite people who are colonized by the Lapsarians are revolting, drawing from both traditional and newfound powers to fight back against their oppressors
> The remnants of old Lapsarian Rebellions, such as the Last Captain and his crew, still haunt the waters where they were defeated, a sacrifice as part of the Bargain
> New powers, like the Industrialists and the Tycoons, fight for dominance in the cities, opposing both each other and other groups (such as the mysterious Hooks) in an ever escalating conflict
> All the while and above all human struggles, the Monolith and the Sea Gods exert their influence, their goals (if any) unknowable

Notes on basic character creation outline:
>The character creation resource are Character Points (CP)
>Character points are spent on 3 main things, Increasing your Statistics, Increasing your Skills, and Perks
>during character creation Character Points can also be exchanged for additional currency
>All skills and statistics begin at 1
>Increasing Skills costs 2, 3, 4, 5, 6
>Increasing Statistics costs 3, 5, 7, 9, 11
>Buying Perks costs an amount dependent on the Perk
>Perks come in two flavors, ones that interact with dice, and 'Quality' perks, which add a definition to your character (Such as 'Stone Touched', 'Oil Altered', etc.), Quality perks are used to qualify for things.
>Every character has a number of Lifepaths, representing a general idea of what their character does (ex. The Kossoki Marauder, The Vagabond, The Stone Whisper, etc.)
>Lifepaths discount a number of Skill & Statistic purchases by 1 (Meaning Skills cost 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 to increase and Statistics cost 2, 4, 6, 8, 10)
>Each lifepath requires you to spend a minimum of 30 points before switching to a new Lifepath
>You can spend more than 30 points before switching, but switching Lifepaths benefits you by increasing the size of your Edge Pool and increasing how many dice you may spend on a check from your Effort Pool
>The size of your edge pool & allowed effort spent on a check is determined by your number of completed lifepaths (1 completed = 1, 2 completed = 2, etc.)
>The size of your effort pool is determined by Total Character Points/10, rounding down
>>
>>82256843
>For normal character creation you first choose a Background, which gives you a set of base statistics (2 statistics start at 2 instead of 1) and starting Perks (these Perks are Quality perks that define your nationality, race, social class, etc.)
>You then have 60 character points to spend (enough for 2 Lifepaths) A GM can choose to give additional CP at character creation to make starting characters stronger
>From your Background you only qualify for Novice Lifepaths (which are things one does in Childhood), which after completing should allow you to qualify for Journeyman Lifepaths
>Lifepaths will often give free Quality perks on taking them to represent key aspects of the Life Path
>Some Qualities are only give as part of Lifepath, and aren't allowed to be purchased as normal Perks

When the character sheet is done I will make an example character to show the ideas above. Any thoughts?

This should hopefully clarify why the prior maps were the way they were. Fast growing coral that has sufficient growth potential is an absolute hazard for ships, and is certainly able to alter the land make-up of the isles.
Red isn't simply the coral but the reefs that are close enough that they form island beds (with long term degradation, soil build up, etc actually turning them habitable rather than coral crops not much better than rock) and prevent any ship larger than a canoe from passing over them. Makes the place rather hazardous.

I can decrease the islands further if people want.

>>

Have we touched on piracy at all in this setting? Surprising if not considering how important the ocean and sea routes are to the setting. I assume piracy has been reduced in Lapsarian coastal regions what with their more advanced ships. I'd wonder how they feel about the Capri Bay incident, emboldened since it's proof Iron clads can be taken down, or even more fearful of them because the destruction of one lead to the Capri Bay ghost and mist. Do pirates use capri bay as a hide away when in Lapsarian waters since no sane captain would go in there? Or do they avoid it for the same reason?

I know this much, the golden age of piracy has passed with these new technological developments, even regular sailing ships are more well armed now and the nations of the world are following Lapsaria's example and bulking up their navies. Plus the wealthiest merchant ships don't carry coin on them anymore but bank notes that a well known pirate couldn't get away with cashing in without getting caught.

Still though the age of piracy is ending, it hasn't done so yet and theirs still plenty of coin to be had on the high seas for the brave, stupid, cunning, and desperate.
>>
>>82257600
The age of sail has largely been ignored, which is a shame as it presents an interesting picture of when the world was younger, the sunset Islands a more unexplored place and things like the Stone Admiral existed. I imagine the mapping of the world was in full swing then, and the process stagnated as the 'west' was filled out. The more robust Jasen states struggled against the more fledgling Tsardom and one another for naval dominance, with the Pre-Union kingdoms of Tarca also getting involved. Everyone was stepping on everyone else's fingers desperately trying to maintain little holds on the wealth the isles allowed.
>>
>>82257600
>>82257644
There's also the potential of going all the way to Kyugoryo to trade, for the incredibly brave.
>>
>>82257672
In my eyes there's three different trade routes:
1. By sea, hugging the coasts. This probably forces you to deal with various port authorities and minor states, which probably extract a fee for safe passage. And even then, you have to deal with pirates.
2. By sea, the long way around. Good luck with this, nobody's probably ever come back alive.
3. By land, through the Vast. This is another "good luck with that" route, but there is probably more success with it - and you don't have to deal with many people barring the way.
>>
>>82257672
I imagine with Kyugoryo being considered a children's tale for Lapsaria, they underwent some serious turbulence and closed themselves off completely.
There WAS a time when trade, while rare, was viable at the start of the age of sale. But without portage in Kyugoryo the trip became a death sentence.
Of course, things are changing as exiles and envoys are making their way out of the Gem Kingdom over the vast, and traders once more find purchase on the interior. So the period of hibernation might be ending...
>>
>>82257644
>>82257672

Me thinks the reason we haven't touched more on this is we've only been dealing with the coast of a few close neighbors untill now as we expand on the sunset isles. If we really want to flesh out how sailing, piracy, and international ocean trade works, I think we need to expand ourselves to a global view, we still don't even have anything for all the coastal nations along the southern and eastern shore lines between our Key players and Kyugoryo. With that said we can still probably cook something up for the "West Coast Sea" theater.
>>
>>82257722
>1. By sea, hugging the coasts. This probably forces you to deal with various port authorities and minor states, which probably extract a fee for safe passage. And even then, you have to deal with pirates.
This would be next to impossible because the Northern/Southern routes both go too close to the poles. It'd be constant storms and the Vast would mean months with no port of call.
>>
>>82257755
Oh great, that basically means a Silk road through the vast or a Columbus route through hundreds of miles of empty sea.
>>
>>82257723
>>82257722
Maybe that could help with the fact there are a bunch of rumours.
Every so often one of the nations near Kyugoryo, or the kingdom itself goes through a period of isolationism, so some people won't get there, some will skip a port and manage to make the trade, or other will end up on a different place altogether, but decide that it must be Kyugoryo because the people are weird, it's far away and there are a bunch of goods there.
>>
>>82257781
In practice it'd probably mean the East/West sides of the continent have next to no contact with one another. Both Sea Routes are insanely dangerous and the land route is the same.

This would be the first era where you can maybe do regular passage over the poles with a big Ice Breaker during the warmer seasons.
>>
>>82257887
I bet the first company to do that on the regular would end up loaded. Would be a good plot thread.
>>
>>82257755
>>82257887

I knew this was the case for the Northern route but I guess the same would go for the southern route. Does anyone still have the proto-global map global map we were using?

Anyway, if this is true then the sailing wise this leads use with two distinct seas, the western sea and the eastern sea, with trade simply going up and down them. Which would mean that pirates would have incredibly predictable sea routes which would make picking out the most valuable targets way easy but would add in the difficult that trade ships really wouldn't have any reason to leave the protection of the coastal defenses as they travel. So prey would be plentiful and easy to find, but much harder to actually get at. So pirates would have to be either really sneaky or really fast or have overwhelming firepower with their looting's in order to get away with it before the coast guards of whatever nation they're in front of repels them.

>>82257781
I imagine the sea is simply to big to pull that off circumnavigation, but with the new and larger oil ships it might be possible but who knows what sea monsters are out their.

As for Traveling through the Vast while possible the Vastian Wasteland is so huge and filled with nothing you'd die due to a lack of resources by the time you got to the other side. The Durites pull if off because they're only going halfway, from the Monolith in the center and back. It can be done of course but only by the largest, most wealthy, most well prepared, most well protected caravans can. Which is how our Kaguyoro Envoys managed it.

>>82257925
You know what I just realized? We basically have the search for the northwest passage again but in reverse. The north east passage or south east passage, both are equally viable in that they both equally aren’t.

I can just imagine an exploratory ice breaker iron clad tasked with doing just that. It would be The Terror all over again but with even worse monsters. When it inevitably fails we have a ghost ship slowly plodding through the ice and becoming another hazard for the next exploratory vessel to encounter.

First row third down is my pick.

Speaking of flora on the islands, we’ve established flowers and spices and we have an image of a coconut on the coral peddler but I don’t think we’ve come up with any specific ones. Some ideas:

> the lava rock pepper, grows most abundantly on fresh volcanic soil.
>the islands kiss flower, a pink almost lip shaped flower commonly sold to foreigners who admire its scent and look
> Fire bug nip blossom, a flowers whose nectar has a similar effect to catnip on the chemical spraying bugs of the island
> Burn Sugar, like regular sugarcane that’s also grown on the island Burn Sugar has the sweetness of sugar but the after taste of intense spice. Indistinguishable in sugar form from regular sugar but the plants are easy to distinguish by color and leaf shape by those who know.
>>
>>82258509
This one looks more tropical, so I’m for it. Like some fun orchid or something.

Question - is the flower poisonous?
Better question - does she know?
>>
>>82258858
The flower itself isn't, the leaves on the other hand? Very.
Depends whether we go with the tourist that is actually a spy or the geolist usinf foreign field work as an excuse for a paid vacation.
>>
>>82258939
Wouldn't a biologist work even better considering the abundant flora and the fact that the coral itself is both stone and alive? Or is she here to study the volcano?

Both sides have fossil evidence, from transitional fossils to serious gaps in the fossil record.

It's actually believed that a lot of the sabotage never happened, and was just paleontologists playing mind games with each other. "This was a great bone bed, too bad I exploded it before you could get to it!". So the paleontology department should have a reputation for psychological warfare. Not just physical sabotage but laying elaborate schemes and plots to waylay their rivals.

This may be established already, but why is Lapsaria planning to invade the Isles?
>>
>>82259748
Several reasons, probably. Those sweet spice and fruit plantations. To control access to coral, and to get greater access to whale hunting grounds. And probably because the navy is trying to justify their modernization.
>>
>>82259748
No extremelly specific reason other than general colonization/expansion. Lapsaria is considerably ahead of the isles in technology, the Isles are rich in resources, etc, etc
>>
>>82259748
Coral plantations and other rare cash crops. The Lapsarians would love to invade for delicious narcotics.
>>
>>82260012
Plus it would give them a naval platform that's off the coastline which no other nations, or if they do not nearly as large as the islands would be. It would give them a foot hold to maintain power projection over a much larger area of ocean. It would be their pearl harbor, but without the getting blown up bit. Well, hopefully not anyway.

That besides Lapsaria has reached levels of imperialist ideology where expansion for expansion's sake is justification enough. Liberating the lesser nations into their glorious fold.

I feel like the left side feels to busy for something that's quite simple (Simple in a good). I think it's mostly because there are a lot of linesthere that have no purpose.
Other than that, the sheet as a whole seems a bit text heavy (as in, the player will write a lot of text), but that's just a consequence of the way the system works. Maybe you could split the Perks section in something like Title: Description boxes, something like Notable Equipment, to seem a bit more organized.

I might compress the left side, remove the notes line and instead put a single 'skill notes' section at the bottom. Also I think I'll condense the Effort/Edge pool section.

Oh shit, you were talking about the air pirates..I thought you meant Barbaros

Yeah, they probably can't get off with stealing large things, and it's probably very dangerous considering the weather conditions they'd have to brave. But they are crazy so they can disregard usual weather and maintenance limitations, and they can mostly make off with value-dense materials as to not weigh then down a lot, so it could still work
>>
>>82261099
You can, but I am honestly struggling with where to put it. Maybe an 'additional skills' section?

I added the notes section to let people put it there if they had it.
>>
>>82261095
>There is a nation of air piraates traveling the vast,
Likely less of a nation and more of a ragtag group, and likely more Lapsaria and it's immediate neighbors than across the vast. But still, i do aknowledge your points remain
>>
>>82261132
the guy who made them specifically said "across the Vast" I took that to mean: anywhere as long as it's far away from Lapsaria
>>
>>82261140
I don't think it's been enough time for them to spread across the vast, especially since their supply of new ships is pretty much nonexistantm also, they need to be close to places whwre they could have access to fuel and parts for their airships, so not likely to be very far from Lapsaria (unless other countries have semi-adcanced air forces)
>>
>>82261151
well that's exactly this >>82261113
there's airship lores and what can bes ssumed from it and pirate lore, and the two are butting heads
>>
>>82261095
What if it's just military airships that are a new thing? Traditional airships (more similar to hot-air balloons than actual airships) exist, and have been used en mass as trade caravans, as well as personal craft, like the aerialist uses, for some time by nations like Jasentorf or Masovii. They would be far more dependent on the wind, cannot be quickly maneuvered, and generally failed to find a military role because of this.

The large, well armed, oil-powered airships of the Lapsarian's on the other hand would be a different story. Using oil-powered engines would enable them to use larger balloons (meaning larger ships) without becoming too unwieldy, control flight to a degree the other balloons couldn't and fly faster than the others.
>>
>>82261151
>>82261176
>>82261236
The Sky Pirates could theoretically travel across the vast they'd run out of fuel by the time they made it to the other side. They'd need to set up a refueling station halfway across and that would require materials and infrastructure they simply aren't interested in when it's easier to take and steal from local population, being airborn does grant them a wider range can be equally effective above land or sea but their goals are also anti-lapsarian government since they formed in the first place as a response to the Capri Bay betrayl, they are fighting the lapsarain's aerialist fleet for that reason and the fact that if they can keep the Lapsairan airforce from building up or destroy it entirely they'll basically have the skies uncontested.

The current Lord Colonel of the Airforce is trying desperately to revitalize the airforce but after the Sky pirate betrayl the Military Council want to see more results that the current airforce can actually be trusted to do their jobs before allowing more funding.

If the sky pirate vs airforce situation can be resolved and rectified then long term airship trade across the vast would be not only possible but highly lucrative though heavily controlled by the Lapsarian goverment since they would be the ones making the airships and providing the way stations needed for long treks.

Or if the Sky pirates end up the ulitmate victors of the sky then they could hodgepodge together their own way stations and become an economic force to rival a small kingdom.

Airship transcontinental trade is inevitable either way, unless both destroy themselves and culturally airships are seen as a lost cause. Depends on how the current conflict goes.

I don't like it because
>1 World building wise there's no reason for the dust of progress to be there. It's not a natural thing, and it's linked to the Vast - which is nowhere near here, physically or culturally
>2 Conceptually - It goes against the framing of the sunset isles to introduce a heavy Stone element to it
>3 I don't really see the need to add more supernatural elements to the area
>4 "They are mostly just mercenaries who burn shit" is weakly thought out, and already covered by the Mercenary Fire Priestess
>5 While I think the Volcano is a good area to cover for the remaining slots (Along with the Jungle in some of the middle ones) I think there are better ways to do that. Fuck, literally put the Volcano itself on the chart, that would add a lot more.
>6 It's super lazy art. I'm not knocking you for trying to contribute, but that's literally a preexisting piece stuck over a background image (which wouldn't be in the end chart anyways, so it's just a preexisting wojak). I still think that adding primitive wireless telegraph like pic-related will be nice addition to setting, it's quite unpredictable and unreliable but quite usefull for navy and air fleet. Though we can make it harder to use than in real Earth, in example Leviathan world will be frequently affected by powerfull electromagnetic storms, so it will prevent from developing really sophisticated devices.

>>82262860
Cool idea, but Ververia isn't just a swampy region it's country with its own iconography I guess.
>>
>>82262884
well it's a fusion of swampdwellers and moutnain dwellers right? And the former ones are, REALLY tied to the water. So something that evokes both those things seems to be in order. Alternatively, and more realistically of course, we can just have something that is so historically contingent that we couldn't deduce it from the current lore. If I told you laods about England, I doubt you would come up with three lions as its symbol.
>>

I would say Caribou should be featured if your going to be representing the Clannsmen, and then perhaps something like crawfish for the Marshfolk? Give it a connection to water without it being just straight more fish. Also, because firearms played an integral role in the creation of Ververia, perhaps some ornately carved flintlock muskets? The crossed musket and pike could be a symbol of the mixed Ververians.

I think the Lapilari plateau would be the center of Clannsmen, since the upper half of the Chattani is Venitii, and the lower half Marshfolk.

The basic gist:
>Magic is performed through ritual, rituals take differing amounts of time depending on the ritual
>Rituals require a number of checks, often using different Mystic skills, equal to their complexity
>Most rituals allow multiple characters to participate, meaning multiple magic characters can collaborate to accomplish a single ritual
>Every time you increase a Mystic skill you learn a ritual of that complexity that uses that skill (If I increase my Ceremony to 3, I get to learn a ritual of Complexity 3 that has one make a Ceremony check)
>Occultism is the skill used to research & develop rituals outside of the ones you naturally develop as your skills increase
>Besides rituals having skill check requirements they can have Rare Materials & Complications
>Rare Materials are just that, and must be sourced (Bargain is the skill that defines one's ability to source items)
>Complications are things that are required of the ritual outside of your control, such as it must be done during the full moon, it must be done on a recently bloodied battlefield, etc. These requirements are most often time/location based. However they can sometimes be things you can't change, like the ritual must only have Durite participants.
>Each mystic skill does primarily a different thing, and so their rituals involve those things, these things are:
>>
>>82267063
>Spiritualism (Mystic)
The contacting of and manipulation of spirits, elementals, and other otherworldly entities. Used to discern information about them, know about them, and in rituals concerning them.
>Phrenology (Mystic)
The magical counterpart to medicine, concerns magic's effect on the body and the natural magical inclinations of the body. Used in rituals that effect the body magically.
>Symbology (Mystic)
Concerning the imparting of power onto objects and the identification of magical objects. Used in rituals to impart magical power onto objects.
>Numerology (Mystic)
Concerning the magical significance of patterns in the world and the discerning of information magically. Used in rituals to divine information magically.
>Occultism (Branched, Mystic)
As a branched skill when one dives into Occultism they must choose a subject of specialty, occultism is used for knowledge on all magical subjects that don't fall into the other categories. This one is not often used in rituals, but is needed for specific and esoteric ones (requiring specific subject matter)
>Alchemy (Mystic)
Concerning the magical properties of animal parts, plants, and metals. Used in rituals to create magical substances.
>Ceremony (Mystic)
Concerning the mystical aspects of religion. Used in rituals to affect the minds of individuals magically.

>The most common thing a ritual imparts is a Temporary Quality, Qualities are what alter the threshold of certain skill checks if a condition is met (Such as Panic Sieve, which increases your threshold to Repose checks to resist violent trauma).
>Rituals can also cause immediate effects, such as imparting information, causing things to move/change, the binding/summoning of spirits, etc.
>Rituals can also impart effects that do not change skills, but give benefits to the quality, such as allowing them to see in the dark
>>
>>82267106
Many of these can be combined in rituals. An easy example is Automatic Writing, a ritual of Automatic Writing would use:
>Spiritualism, Numerology

Another ritual, such as to create a magical potion that calm the mind would use:
>Alchemy, Ceremony

Rituals can also come in Degrees. Automatic Writing can be made more complex so as to impart more complete/clearer information. Such advanced versions of rituals would be separate and must be learned separately.
>>
>>82265286
That looks dope

Anyone else think CCA is nothing but detrimental to this project at this point? He has too much control over it.

>>
>>82267457
In what sense? He hasn't really intervened much in many areas of world building, the areas he has intervened in he's been pretty open to other opinions, and the system isn't part of the setting so it's less collaborative by nature.
Sure he has a lot of power, but he hasn't been really controlling as of yet
>>

I somewhat agree, but then again, the supernatural does exist in the world, it's only a matter of applying it in a more practical sense. And how common this magic is can vary a lot depending on how you run it. Personally,if I were to run this setting I'd make rituals something only practiced by cults and heavily spiritualized individuals
>>
>>82267713
>I'd make rituals something
I would say it still be quite common practicing them in rural area or in uncivilized places.
>>
>>82267744
Practicing some sort of rituals could be common, but actual magic should be (in my opinion) rare, unstable and have consequences. So not something a random peasant would be doing by burning a candle and saying thanks

>>
>>82267713
Magic is definitely practiced as something practical, by Lapsarians. The Spirit Technician at least works with them consistently. The Synance Royal University should have a Department of Practical Thaumaturgy.

On the other sides Stone Singers do magic, and the Salt Shaman over on the salt pan has been doing rituals literally non-stop.
>>
>>82267773
I think CCA said the intention was that actual magic was rare, and mostbof the rituals are actually fake.
So a durite stone-singer that manages to have the srone sing back just did magic, but a normal durite just singing regular song isn't going to do shit.

Since the rituals haven't been fleshed out yet we don't even have a generalized power scaling of how strong the rituals are going to be. Numerology is an actual thing, though it's got a lot in common with astrology. Going by a predetermined system, a person's name is boiled down into numbers, which are then analyzed using that system, in order to derive information about that person. It's as dumb as star signs and palm reading.

However, if we want to create an actual magic system out of numerology, we could make it a lot more sophisticated. A talented numerologist would probably be a master of dozens of different systems, which they use to analyze far more than just a person's name. The practitioner must feed all sorts of information into these many systems and produce a flood of numbers, which only the most enlightened numerologists can actually sift true meaning out of.

So, someone performing numerology would more or less look like a guy messing around with books and charts for hours on end until he finally shouts "THE TSARINA VISITS THE KYUGORYO ENVOY'S BECHAMBERS TWICE A WEEK" or some other revelation.

Less spells and powers, more - if we do this the ghosts don’t eat out skulls - we found this out by chance after the 40th guy got his skull eaten, but 20 times over, so they have built up a small repertoire of rituals and superstition that tends to keep then more alive than others in the bay

Yes - however, it’s not a consistent process - the monolith decides if they want people to become SS’s. The same the same ritual things done by 100 people might result in one SS, and it’s random who that is. It’s not a thing you learn, but a thing you are made into

A couple of people seemed to have objections to this idea, but if you're interested in it and are wiling to explain it a bit more, I can fit it in (also, we're down to our last slot, so I'd probably have to shift the Fire beetle guy one right to fit in the Ifrit)

I thought the objects were mainly to the last art, which is why I redrew it. I am not attached to the idea in any way, so skipping it is fine.
>>
>>82270633
There was some opposition to that, but some people commplaned also that his presence was a bit redundant (considering the Fire Priestess already fit's the hole of a fire-setting lunatic), the presence of another supernatural being being unnecessary, and that the explanation given to his existancee was a bit weird (Something about them being semi-slab knights due to inhaled fumes).
I'm not personally too invested in any of these arguments, just wanted to be sure that we're aware of these concerns

I am going to try reorganizing the lore document section for Sunset Isles and add some bullet points from the last two threads:

sunset isles (heading 3):
- keep existing general info
- move coffee/gochem section here
- moth silk
- giant crabs
- inter-islanders
- slavery
- politics

north (heading 4):
- lapsaria allied sultanate
- Kybadora
- Tavylaad

east/middle (heading 4):
- barbaros (no longer heading 4)
- Cheddek catamaran flotilla
- Alzbanaap
- Sunghi

south (heading 4):
- coral caliph
- sultanate of breena
- Emandro Isles
- sultanate of Ullatasoi
- Pon'Tomoick Island

>>82270859

>>
>>82271008
>you are moving the crabs from ververia to sunset islands?
While technically it's not a either or situation, I do think crabs with reefs on top of them are a neat idea, and that we should try to keep Ververia a bit more grounded (Since Lapsaria has, at least originally, very few actual monsters and such)

It's probably the natives from the island that the settler has been granted.
>>
>>82271793
I wouldn't say so, I imagine if the Tarcan is anything to go by, adventurers and Princedom folk have probably tried a few times to take islands over the age of sail.
But Lapsaria is 'different' in that they're able to actually deal with the bugs and the disease and the natives as their sciences advance. Same thing that enabled the rush for Africa after Europe could barely penetrate the coasts.
>>
>>82270909
Alright, finished the edits to the Sunset Islands stuff.

Captured most of the existing info / brainstorming, plus added some mundane ideas to fill in some of the blanks.

Left the topics of religion, flame, and coral mostly alone for now, also didn't include any past info on Barbaros since it has been retconned so many times.

Feel free to challenge stuff since it is mostly not my ideas anyways.

Hasyym depresses me too.
>>
>>82273206
I think that, if we're talking compasses, we can join Sligaff and Masovii. As for Hassym, I'm not even sure they are complex enough to need their own compass.

Though for general development, I'd also tie Sligaff in with Masovii, and maybe place stuff like Tarca, Freeskalon and some minor development to the nations furtehr south we haven't even created yet.

We can try fleshing them out a bit

Corruption (Oil) vs Tradition (Stone?)

Predator (warriors, thugs, mercenaries) vs Prey (beggars, poor rural folk)?
>>82273137
Ignoring the debates about how both fire and coral could theoretically fit under both fish and stone (and also that fire could be its own thing, and fire worshippers potentially worship both fake and real fire), how exactly do the coral faith and fire faiths work?

I am guessing coral would be some really weird shit emphasizing change for the sake of change, and self improvement via coral (also degeneracy and getting high), while fire would be more violent and (slightly) less decadent.

But do they each have multiple gods, or one god, etc. What are their rituals, tenets, and organization?

>>
>>82273942
IIRC fire religion, at least insofar as The Fire Maiden part of it, is a roundabout was of worshipping Auntie. The light of the flame is Her's and the danger is just as near. Flames cast shadows, and it is in the darkness where she bides.
I see the Volcano's themselves as an object of worship. They are the arbitrators of the islands, maker and unmaker. What has been given can be taken away.
I see sacrifice not as a gift to placate, but rather the cleansing of the vile and impure. It's not to bribe a spirit, but to show that they can police themselves, and don't need the judgement of the Volcano to come to them. Foreigners act in the wrong customs, wrong manners, wrong minds - that is why often, if they can get away with it, foreigners are the regular targets of sacrifice. The diseased are too seen as unclean. This may sound strange, as the jungles and waters contain myriad diseases and poisons, but think about it - it is only through the cleansing of those susceptible that the current islanders are as resilient as they are. Those who have immunity have lived and spread.

>>82274149
the oil/corruption side should be easy and fun - we already got the oil wrestler done, the sell sword written for, and the belly dancer is pretty much inevitable, also a good chance to show off oil mutations as discussed earlier

the tradition side may be trickier, it needs some sort of gimmick other than tobacco pipes and probable stone worship - on the plus side we already got the Hasyyiam Elder we can use - maybe do some abandoned monuments/sacred relics/gods to emphasize few follow the old gods anymore

Blood <----> Knowledge

>>
>>82277046
>>82275035

>>
>>82277080
not bad, although the two seem quite similar. Maybe do blood - bone instead?
>>
>>82277147
Blood and bone is even more similar.
I was thinking that knowledge was more religious, and that survival is pratical.
Glory would be a legacy and blood would be violence.
Thinking about it now, both of them are kind of too similar.
>>
>>82277210
i'm saying the axes are similar. blood suggests glory and knowledge suggests prudence.
>>
>>82277234
Yeah, that's what I said at the end, that the axis really are too similar.
Cold vs Tree?
>>
>>82277234
glory and survival are a perfect pair already, o those i wouldnt change. Cold and Tree feels bad, contrasting things you dont wanna contrasted.
I actually really am starting to like blood and bone - both evoke glory and survival in equal meassure so all quadrants make sense and it evokes a dry/wet dichotomy which is actually instantiated ip there
>>
>>82277338
meant for>>82277290
>>
>>82277338
Well, the cold vs tree is that the tundra itself is cold and snow, it's danger.
The tree is the stonewood tree, it's the armour, it's the totems, its safety.
So cold would be the more nomadic tribes, or invaders, while tree are the more settled.
Or cold are the ones that want to live of the rundra and it's dangers, while the tree are those that want to change it.
All the conpass have weird contrast that we put a meaning to, so I don't het why it would be so bad.
Meanwile blood and bone is too close for my tastes, better to use only one of them and contrast it to something different.
And I really am not seeing bone mean survival in any way, for me it means the opposite, death. Or cannibalism.
>>
>>82277430

Blood <----> Knowledge
Cold <----> Tree

We dpnt need a pure suuri compass, we should do a general northern one, that can get us finally some ververian art
>>

>we should do a general northern one
On yeah, I agree. I meant suuri as generic tundra descripton, because that's what the region is called in the mapsss
> that can get us finally some ververian art
I think ververia has been developed enough on its own where it is distinct enough from the rest of the north.

Oh, I get that it's just one anon, I'm just bad at explaining my ideas.
I still think at there's nothing that bone calls that isn't already in blood.
Here's what we have so far

Glory - Legacy, War
Knowledge - Faith, Survival
Tree - Safety, Family
Cold - Land, Danger
Survival - Knowledge, Self-preservation
Blood - War? Family? Glory? Food? Wet?
Bone - Solid? Survival?? Cannibalism?

We need another anon to help inject new ideas and perspective.
>>82277518
Yeah, a general norf is better than pure suuri
>>

it's squish vs crunch
>>
>>82277598
But what if there is squish inside of the crunch?
Wendigo smartest because Wendigo not bound by silly food compass.
>>
>>82277620
then it's close to the center of the compass
>>
>>82277629
Wendingo not on compass, Wendigo ascended. Wendigo is greatest form of man.
>>
>>82277655
Wendigo, sit! You're messing up the carpet.

All this bone talk reminded me of this.

I think it fits the setting well.

The marked spots are only tentatively reserved for the stuff I may still do. So if you wanna do something for a marked spot, knock yourself out

Luolammies looks cool.

The Luos look absolutely radical.
Although now the Emissary is prime pink boi territory and hard Worldly as they come.
>>
>>82279679
Could you elaborate on that? Why does that mean he has to be worldly?

This is another design. thoughts?
>>

Much like the OG Sinbad, dealing with monsters enough makes a mother fucker unorthodox.
With that said I just realized the Duster and the Princess are that far worldly, so I'll rephrase my position to him being in with the Renegade and the Greegarii.

So is the pattern:
Deep Creatures (Luolammies/Delvers/etc.) -> Vastian Mutants (Wendigo/Skinwalker/etc.) -> Vastians -> Durites -> Everyone else

The above being indicated by a slow pinkening of the skin, with those more genetically related to deep creatures being soft grey tones.

Over the next week I suspect things will slow considerably until early December as people won't be participating and instead be doing holiday celebrations. I will continue to work on the homebrew & finalized document as I can, and try and keep the threads up.

They're both pretty nifty. That said this one could use a little tinkering if you want to switch it, I can see other people not taking it seriously.

>>82279798
Personally I'd rank it as more of an outward grading as chemical influences are now getting extremely common. So more like like (The Kelp Farmer) -> (Lapsarian Upper-Class/Durites) ->(Oil Addicts) ->(Vastians)

Alerian merchant from the main compass can probably be included somewhere.
