This is a crowd sourced endeavor to create a setting and rpg.

What was produced is pic related, the setting of LEVIATHAN (the name is a work in progress), the World of Sacred Oil and Broken Stone. The purpose of this thread is to organize to continue filling out the Lore Document, congregate for map making, and for developing an RPG system for this setting.

The story of the world is emergent, being developed as we discuss and explore the Compass. The Docs provides most in-depth explanations of most items, but the main conflicts of the setting are as follows:
> The Lapsarians have a secret Bargain with the Ocean Gods for Oil: A fuel source, the heart of the recent industrialization, and food-item which provides boons to those who consume it, though at a cost
> The Durite people who are colonized by the Lapsarians are revolting, drawing from both traditional and newfound powers to fight back against their opressors
> The remnants of old Lapsarian Rebellions, such as the Last Captain and his crew, still haunt the waters where they were defeated, a sacrifice as part of the Bargain
> New powers, like the Industrialists and the Tycoons, fight for dominance in the cities, opposing both each other and other groups (such as the mysterious Hooks) in an ever escalating conflict
> All the while and above all human struggles, the Monolith and the Sea Gods exert their influence, their goals (if any) unknowable

No. Even if there is darkness, there is a lot of light. You just got to stay out of the bad places.
Bad rivers. Maybe invest in a few masks.
>>
>>82130802
Don't think so, but as you said, it's up for interpretation. If you go by the wikipedia given definition of a grimdark setting ebing "dystopian, amoral, or violent", then yeah. But I think hopelesness in changing the current situation is a big part of Grimdark, and if nothing else in leviathan nothing is stopping you from either a) Fucking off to another corner of the globe where things might be better or b) actually possibly improving the situation

Added the Vastian Rock Eaters.

My idea is Vastian is a general term for the cultureless peoples who somehow survive in the desert's interior. Little more than cavemen.

Also the Phrenology Skill ties Vastian to Durites (considering their similar grey skin).
>>
Whoever came up with the Goguryeo, I'm thinking of changing the name a bit so it's not straight up old Korea.
I tried fusing it with the Okinawan kingdom of Ryukyu to come up with Kyugoryo, is this alright?
Also adding a Jem- prefix instead of Gem, because the text on the emissary referenced Jem instead of Gem, so i thought it might have been your original intent and it got auto-corrected or something.

For the new compass: Bottom Row, center left:

I think we shouldn't prescribe it in too much detail, since this is somewhere the players can come in and be involved with as it happens. But he touched the monolith - not out of reverence, but curiosity- and something touched him back, something he's bringing back to the Lapsarian capital.

Ornate cannons (perhaps in the same pattern as their ornate masks) would be cool.

Why not both? Before industrialization and Gundpower they focused mainly on ballistae and scorpions, but after the modernization of the army they adapted and became cannon producers, though still having a thing for adaptations of old-fashioned siege weaponry with modern Tech, though mostly for decorative purposes

>How about instead of the populist carver, you add his boss, the arch-bishop?
I am trying to add people more slowly involved with Lapsaria, which is why I hesitated on the Arch Bishop. Maybe the Patriarchal Order Monk?
>>
So the setting has ritual based magic, at least for how I am constructing the mechanical side. I based the magic off of 19th and early 20th century occultism. So far we have a fair number of more tribal mystics, but I am thinking of who to add on the Lapsarian side of magic.
>>
>>82132132
But neither the patriarchal or the populist are invested in Lapsaria. I would argue that the Arch-Bishop has more interest in the place than both of them simply because he is the leader of a rival church, but the best option is to add none of them and keep it internal Lapsaria.

As far as I was doing it, the Mirror Walkers are more a by-product of the Masovii's religious activates than the goal of them - the rain there is pretty damn infrequent (so it wouldn't really be practical anyways) but moreso the Walkers are following the Father's song - which is something that if they knew about it they'd be pretty upset about.

the interior vastians being the source of sacrifices is as good an idea as any, though that's probably not the "only" source of them. Tbh when I was writing I didn't really have a direct source for them, but the world was also a lot less developed then so idk

>>82131707
They way they were written originally was a lot more fish aligned, but because of the space issues they were set to a bit more of a neutral position. They would totes listen to the Monolith as well, if it cared enough to talk to them. Imo, as stuff is now, they're fine on either side of the Coral, so they can stay or be moved based on if someone else needs either slot.

I do do the whole world at hardly any level of detail.

This is the basic. Red is Lapsari.

Orange are active (tall) mountain ranges. Yellow are inactive (shorter) mountain ranges. Being on the west coast means Lapsari will be warm for its lattitude but the shape of the continent means it'll still be cold. Think the climage of England and the pacific northwest. I put deserts to make the Vast's interior a single massive desert.
>>
>>82134142
Open question to everyone: is the current capital northern, southern, or towards the center?

I guess this depends on where we want the Capri River to be, as that's the old homeland.
>>
>>82134142
>Red is Lapsari.
I see. Is this with the Durite territoies? Where +- would you be drawing the lie between Durite and Lapsarian lands?

Also, if Lapsaria is so north, it's probably pretty cold (> the climate of England and the pacific northwest), and we haven't really considered snow or tundra/near polar regions in lapsaria at all
>>
>>82134283
This is with Durite acquisitions and with the Lapsari projecting their power further north. it is pretty far north. My idea is that the world is warmer than earth. Not by a lot, but a tad warmer.

It makes Lapsari wet and humid.

I see. And where would the Durite territories be? Because if they're at pic related (blue), it's a somewhat weird positioning for highly mobile people due to the near encircling mountains, and as we know the Durites (or rather their ancestors) used to raid multiple countries around the world, and should be able to move towards the Monolith near the center of the continent.
Though if they are pic related Green, whoile it makes more sense with what we know of the Durites, the occupation seems somewhat small compared to Lapsaria as a whole, and seemingly arbitrarily limited
>>
>>82134485
That's what I was thinking, but I am redoing the coastlines now, so I'll redraw based on that.
>>
>>82134559
That;s what you were thinking Blue or green?because I think Blue could be solved by breaking the mountainrange to give the Durites free access to the rest of the continent. green would be a bit more tricky, as Lapsaria as a whole would have to get smaller for it to make sense

>This map makes Lapsaria massive though, but a lot of it would be frozen and unusable.
Also, distortion due to the map being a projection of a sphere definitely makes it look bigger,

> The North Border guard only makes sense if there is a norther border that NEEDS defending.
maybe Masovii is on the right side of Lapsaria's mountain chain, and some of their people claim the lands to tthe north of Lapsaria. Altough unusable, it's still techinally a frontier with another country and thus must be defended.

Though lapsaria still *seems* massive (though i think while we're making a Global map that'll always look pretty weird), and locations for its neighbors are limited.

Problem is this is a world map, so both of those territories would be absolutely massive, especially the Durite's since theres less distortion from the projection.
>>
>>82134755
I feel like this is something that we should be using a 1500s style map for.
IE; So I think France is a Cube and Turkey is a very misshapen sandwich.
>>
>>82134755
true, I do think they should hold comparable territory to the Lapsarians though, it would add considerably to the logistical side of the issues they've been having.
Even if most of the space is unused steppe, or impassible mountains, it gives a lot more space for rebels and insurgents to set up from.

Considering the world's and lapsaria's tech level are in the 1800's, we can definitely have semi-precise maps. Pic related is a 1817 map

>>82134799
True, and I agree they need a little more space in the map. But remember that equal in the map doesn;t mean equal in practice, due to map distortions. So for the sizes to be near equal, the map area for the durites needs to be somewhat smaller

Potentially, but I feel like this is a very recent science.

Well, this is a late 1700's map (1786). There's definitely some wonkyness, but still generaly good.

+ Defining the whole world is, according to CCA, much more a question of getting worldwide climates right than actually what any civillization knows, so a map focusing on one single nation could definitely be more limited.

they're not required by the Lapsarians to follow orders or maintain a constant presence in Durite lands, so they're more or less free to come and go as they please and fight at their leisure.
all things considered this is a bit of a morale high point in the culture.

alright so the Jasentorf standard for arms seems to be flintlocks.

So as was suggested on the doc, we could make percussion caps a development of Oil alchemy, another boon of the Bargain.

so to keep with Lapsaria being several decades ahead of the rest of the world, again as was suggested on the doc, we could have them using something like the Dreyse needle gun.
It'll give them a definite but not overpowering edge in firepower at the cost of complexity and likely causing the production bottleneck that was mentioned as one of the logistics issues Lapsaria is facing.

What's the endgame of the Fisher King? To use the oil to turn the human race into deep ones? To cover the entire world in ocean? It seems to me like the real "bargain" would entail this.

Though it would be a neat plot twist if it were discovered the Monolith is actually the ultimate evil, despite whatever horrors the Fish Gods are responsible for.

That directly conradicts the motiff we've been pushing for this whole time. The monolioth is supposed to be akin to a force of nature. It Can't be Evil because we're not even sure it thinks. I don't think it should be by the Deacon. There should be another noble Lapsarian who took that role. It could be added to the count's entry.

>>82137295
I love the fact that the deacon had a regency, really went gham on consoldiating power, but then still chose to abdicate power to the Tsarina in sucha way that she has evidently had a very strong influence herself. Kind of speaks to the Deacon's foresight, he doesn't make her a puppet until it blows up in his face, he makes sure there's a competent ruler.
>>
>>82137262
Tsarina is meant to take power around the age of 10, so how about the Tsarina was born around the year of the bargain or shortly before, the Capri bay rebellion happening around 3 years after, the Veverian campaign happening about 5 years later, and the Old tsar died 2 years later leaving the Tsarina in charge helped greatly by her trusted advisor the Deacon

>>
>>82137392
>>82137360
>>82137374
one of the older ideas was that the Deacon was dripping poison in the ear of the tsar, convincing him that the Masovii were planning to unify with the Durites, or otherwise start moving against them, and that the boons brought by the bargain would be the only way to defeat them.
The deacon stoked the paranoia of an already paranoid man that wished the best for his country and felt the sacrafice he was making was for the greater good, when in actuality he was just being manipulated so the Deacon could gain himself more influence with the ear of the young and impressionable Tsarina.
>>
>>82137406

>>82137438
I think the deacon would want to get the Tsarina on the throne as early as possible to serve as a legitimizing figurehead, while he advised her.

so maybe she took the throne shortly after the betrayal, as a way to keep the people pacified.

The Tsarina's conception being the beginning of the bargain also gives us more time to industrialize. It would be the bargain ~32 years in the past or so.

I think one life is a little small for the nature of the bargain.
It seems like the Kingfisher traded vast resources that would give a massive economic and technological boost, as well as potentially gifting Lapsarians esoteric knowledge to put those resources to best use.

The price being either a one time deal of tens of thousands of sacrifices, or that was just the first payment, and they need to keep up a steady supply. Possibly they collect Durite prisoners, which "go missing" in the custody of the Order of Ichthys. The rebels have to meet the sea gods somewhere.
Additionally they required that the Lapsarians eradicate the faith of the monolith, and destroy their objects of worship.

I feel like this was a deal made to try and make the country as a whole more powerful at the cost of innocent lives.
>>
>>82137595
That said we could always just say the Tsarina is closer to 40 and her youthful appearance is a result of her use of Oil.
that would give us an extra decade to work with regardless of a few years difference in birth years.
so she looks in her late 20's, is actually in her early 40's, and was born around the time of the bargain, give or take a few years
so current time is roughly 40 years post bargain
>>
>>82137553
>>82137564
I don't really like that. It's better if she's a real person rather than part fish. There's already enough of that around her in her court. I honestly think that having her born before the bargain is the right way to go, and not only that, but a more interesting one.

>>82137643
>at the cost of innocent lives
Please remember. The Fisher King does all that he does because he loves you. The Bargain is not one of traders, where it is an exchange of equal goods, rather it is that of a parent to a stubborn child. "If you finish all your homework we can go out for ice cream later". It is a reward for, at least in the Fisher King's eyes, doing a good job.

agreed

>>82137643
>I think one life is a little small for the nature of the bargain.
the real lapsarian side to the bargain is the whole of Lapsaria. Lapsaria is given to the OCean, and we can see it transform before our eyes. The Tsar may have thought that he was giving some lives or whatever to pay for it, but that's a category error on his part. The king gives his gifts FREELY. He gives to care for his children, and to have more children to care for. Capri bay wasn't payment, it was the sealing of the deal, a show of good intention.
The Lapsarian half of the bargain may not realize this, but this is what the nature of the Bargain - and any bargain with the king - looks like. A fully selfless act of fishy recuperation.

I'm sorry, is the Betrayal not the end event of the Capri Bay Rebellion? The timeframe of those should be a lot closer

Could also throw in the Masovii Tribes Confederating (sometime after the Jasentorf Empire breaks down, but still a while ago- 400 BB ish?), and the Masovii gaining control of Sligaff.(maybe 90 BB - still sorta recent in the grand scheme of things, but a enough that several generations have come and gone since then)

>>82138179
Putting the above aside - there's steps to the thing. First of all, they had to actually start their conquest of Durit, which given that it's been around 1 generation since that happened, was probably during the Deaconcy/Early Tsarina period. Then there's the fact that they had to establish control and actually start, y'know persecuting them for that stuff to start building up after the military defeat. And the industrialization and military organization for all this had to happen beforehand and took time to build for.
>>

If you mean what CCA commented here >>82131256, I interpreted the Betrayal (Mostly due to >>82137113) as something that followed immediately from the reult of the battle in Capri Bay, not a separate event and definitely not a few years apart

I had a though regardin this idea a while ago. The thought being, the Fisher King never outright told people to destroy the Slabs or hunt the Monolith worshippers, he just cautioned them about the dangers of the Monolith.
But the Deacon interpreted it(or had it interpreted to him) as "kill all stone worshipers", and started a whole extermination campaign against them, leading to the Durite rebellion, tense relations with their neighbors, etc etc.
So once again, not the fault of the god, just people fucking up and acting out of fear of the unknown

>I had a though regardin this idea a while ago. The thought being, the Fisher King never outright told people to destroy the Slabs or hunt the Monolith worshippers, he just cautioned them about the dangers of the Monolith.
This idea that there is not really a mandate to supress the Durites has been floated before and I'm sympathetic to it. But it should definitely not just be "caution them about the dangers of the Monolith" and more "encouraged them to reduce stone worship so he can come in and give nice gifts". It should be mistaking a soft ask for a condition, not a completely different kind of statement for an imperative.
>>
>>82139418
>encouraged them to reduce stone worship so he can come in and give nice gifts
That is a much better idea.
I had some gripes with the idea of the Fisher King demanding stone worship to end as it would just make him seem petty, but the idea that he expressed he wanted to have more children to gift, and people took that too far, is a good interpretation
>>
>>82139442
>'Bring me more folk, and I reward you better'

I like that idea, makes both the fisher king more amoral and open to interpretation but makes the deacon more of a bastard and puts the persecution of the stone worshippers in a more human lens. Human cruelty spurred on by ambivalent supernatural forces is very on brand for this setting.
>>
>>82139681
The Fisher King takes away pain.
The Monolith is removed from it as stone is.
It's the Lapsarians who are looking at the Durites like a bunch of Tsarists looking at the Circassians.
>>
>>82139681

I imagine he doesn't actually die in the traditional sense.

The reason the Deacon convinced him to do the Bargain instead of making a deal of his own was because he knew enough to know the brakish ones are gonna collect eventually.

He wanted the old Tsar out of the way leaving him in a position of immense political power at a time when Lapsaria would be extremely powerful due to the boon.

The old Tsar is serving the Fisher King in his own way now.
>>
>>82139951
Oh yeah, I agree with that. My main thing is less the "dying" part (I used that language as that is whjat's said in teh timeline) and more the timing of him getting dissapeared.
I think he should disapear after the rebelliion, not bofore it.
>>
>>82139991
With the rebellion happening after he died, it meant that the Deacon could have sealed the bargain without opposition.
Because the capri bay rebellion meant that it was the point of no return for Lapsaria.

>>
>>82140070

Fair, though I'm still fond of the idea of the sacrifice in Capri Bay being as much of the tsar's ambitions, as he sacrifices his prize ship, as of human lives

> What I don't get is what the hell is the betrayal, wasn't it the rebellion?

we could make it 4 reigning tsar's back and have each rule for about 60 years, up until the old Tsar's was cut short at only about 30-40.

Which would put the unification about 150-200 years before the Bargain.

Also the Kossoki would have split from the Durites around 500 years ago

the Durites would have discovered the monolith a few millennia ago, and slowly started adopting a more agrarian culture, though by the time of the Lapsarian invasion into Duritas(I like that name but I don't know if it's the actual name for the country) only about 1/3 of the Durite population were sedentary.

I think the Durite invasion was shortly before the Bargain, about 5-10 years, with the Durites enduring it until the bargain when the Lapsarians began their crusade against monolith worship. Conditions in Duritas quickly deteriorated, and more and more Durites joined up with Durite insurgent forces, which included the remains of their military, and others joined the more radical rebel groups.
>>

If the Durite lands are Durita, than the language should be Durit.

A Tsar has assumes the throne at 20 and has a kid at 20. He dies after ruling for 60 years. By this point his kid is already 20 himself.
So unless the tsars are having kids REALLY late (Like, at their 60s), you need to have shorter rules.

Lapsaria and Duritas strike me as a nation that formed out of several principalities and one that was only unified under Lapsarian rule.
I feel like the first Durits under the foor would be those immediately on the far shore of the Nemit, and like Ireland it wasn't an all at once deal.
I also feel like the agrarianism should be a more recent development. To an 'outer' Durit you were always a farmer and have no recollection of a time when your people lived outside the Tsardom. However on the fringes that could be a more recent development and the Demi-nomadic presence never fully went away. Your dad talks about when the Kossoki rolled up and planted the flag, and your cousins all drive goats in the badland.

It's also better if we account for contentions in succession. But that is me.

>>82140240
With the Lady in Gray, rapid industrialization kind of already had to have occured. I feel like the big problem is having Capri Bay so close to the Bargain. It could also be a metaphor, that they were the last hold-outs before all the tsardom was firmly working in the interests of the king
>>
>>82140192
>I also feel like the agrarianism should be a more recent development
Oh yeah. I thought it was common grounds that the chnage in way of life of Durites was one of the reasons behind the rebelion. The Lapsarians were pushing them from nomadic to agrarian lifestyles, and not all of them were fine with that. So even more recent than you amke seem, in fact, something of the last 40-50 years (Depending on how far back the Durite colonization began)

>>82140240
Fair point.

>>82140221
This is interesting. The ascendency being age dependent woul indirectly encouage Tsars to have children late, as to not imotivate potential power struggles within the family, as well as introduce interesting dynamics in a way that isn't just copying something from the real world (as far as I know, at least)

we do still need art of the old Tsar

We haven't established much about him other than he's a paranoid ruler that deeply cares for his people, and he was roughly 45-55 when the Bargain was struck

Not really, the Kossiki left because the Durites stopped being nomads and were abandoing tradition.

>>
>>82140304
There was also proposed his name was Ivan because of the new capital being Ivangrad.
>>
>>82140291
it would explain why the Tsar had the Tsarina relatively late in his reign actually, it would put her birth about 20 years before the old Tsar would expect to step down or die, though they could just ascend the youngest child of the old Tsar, so the bloodline doesn't get cut off if a Tsar dies before he can have a child later in life
>>
>>82140299

>>82140311

Really? I thought it was due to religious differences. At least, that's what's been estabilished in the docs
>>
>>82140304
This probably ties with the Grandfather of the Tsarina as it's usually three rows for serious relevancy.

So the Grandfather...
>The Tsar of Steel
>Initiated the first centralizing reforms, expanded Lapsaria vigorously
>Welcomed the Shapers back into the mainstream and secured the supply of Steel
>Aggressive tax policies, hard wars and general harsh demeanor made him largely reviled
>However his hold on the country was Ironclad and none could oppose him

And his Son...
>The Tsar of the Evening
>Inherited the Crown after his father's death by tumors
>Immediately made several moves to placate the masses and the nobles earning much adornment
>However as he grew older, his focus dimmed, and he grew increasingly wary and focused on pet projects
>Having slashed his revenue earlier, racked up serious debts, turned to increasingly unsavory means for funding
>Trusted the deacon

Thoughts?
>>
>>82140291
>>82140311
yeah I think the major reason the Durites started rebelling was the religious suppression, and later attempted eradication by the Lapsarians.
With an additional amount that revolted over being forcefully settled being a comparatively small number in the greater unrest.
>>
>>82140336
I think that's the riligious differences, the Kossoki followed the old ways, and tje durites convertes to stone and started becoming more sedentary.
The kossoki themselves converting to Lapsarian religion probably was tge last straw.
>>
>>82140351
>So the Grandfather...
>>The Tsar of Steel

Would he be the one to start the colozination of the Durites? Maybe late in his life, so the timeline somewhat fits
>>
>>82140353
Well like actual settling, the people already settled benefit from an increased manpower pool and the direhards tend to piss off deeper inland.
Religious changes though? That's where we get into the ethnic cleansing.

>>82140370
I imagine he began the major moves, but there was an existing precedent of nipping up weak chiefdoms opportunistically.
>>
>>82140351
And tgere was her great-grandfather, Pietr (probably need a name change) the Great, who turned Lapsaria from a kingdom into an empire.
Probably the reason Ivan was so strong, he could afford being unpopular because of the shadow of his father, but felt he needed to make his own mark. Even named the new caputal after himself.
>>
>>82140363
Ye I came up with a lot of the Kossoki lore, that's about it. Both groups were one and worshiped the now dead religion of a sky god.
The Durites discover the monolith and slowly converted, with the Kossoki holding to the old ways for some time, before being exiled after converting to the Lapsarian faith and the 'heated religious debates' that followed
>>
>>82140363
>tje durites convertes to stone and started becoming more sedentary.
Here's the Deal, converting to stone would make the Less sedentary, as the pilgrimages to the monolith are a big part of the Stone worship. So taht wouldn';t work very well as an explanation.
And besides that, in general the Durites were constructed as a generally nomadic people (Heavily inspirred by the Mongolians and otehr nomadic people).
Hell, it's even in the docs (And on eof the oldest pieces of information on it, in fact) that the Durites "Used to be nomadic,
FORCED into a mostly agrarian lifestyle by now".
I know the docs isn't absolute, but Durites being traditionally nomadic has been a thing since the start and has been one of the main ideas
>>
>>82140311
the durites only stopped being nomads after Lapsarian colonization. it was a forced change, not a voluntary one, and much, much later than the split

If we follow this train of thought, I'd think it would be better if the unifier founded the city, because while the Russian move to Petersburg was drastic it had the advantage of growing with time. This is making the new capital live for only a single generation, and we should get a minimum of two before we throw the baby out with the bathwater. Potentially it is the Grandfather's Grandfather who unified the principalities and crushed the Venitii, however the between Tsar stagnated and the Steel Tsar reordered the country, expanding it and crushing the last influences of the Principalities.

>>82140404
I don't think there's any issue with the religious debate side of thing, it's a good motivation and gives insight into the Durite's stone worship. But this isn't a good justification for Durites being sedentary/agrarian. Do you thinkl tjis divide between nomadic/sedentary is integral to this conflict? Or is the religious apsect enough?
>>
>>82140436
I prefer that the son of the unifier did it to get away from just having a Peter clone.
Also because the city was abandoned after the betrayal and the capital moved back to the old capital, if it was more than one generation old, it might have been too much of a blow for Lapsaria to just keep getting stronger, even with all the gifts.

it does raise a few questions about the nature of Durite architecture
do you think they'd build large shanty style villages, or actual cities like the mongols did irl?
>>
>>82140495
>We can afford to have some time.
This. I think it's important to push theTimajor and Veniti conquests back in time a bit, since despite being distinct ethnicg groups, ttheya re integral part of the empire, and seem to have been this way for quiste some time
Alse the Venit should be conquered somewhat earlier than the Timajor, since the current lore ha the empire using venitii cannons against the Timajors (Minor tidbit, but helps build flavor)
>>
>>82140516
>>Gen 5-4 Tsars, stagnate the country
I think instead of Stagnate we can portray it as consolidating the country, integrating the conquered ethnicities, etc
>>
>>82140516
Fuse 5-4 and it can work.
>>82140518
Yurt cities. Because they look cool.
>>
>>82140518
I feel like they'd just have natural extensions of their older style that lost their mobility. Think yurts with stone pillars rather than wood. Paving and things like that.
If they remained shepherds, then that transforms basic sheep herding into a vital corner of architecture.
>>
>>82140522
I there's also the matter of geography, the Kossoki encountered the Timajor and had a larger impact on their culture than anyone else, so I figure they'd be around a lot.
making the Timajor likely the first river you meet after the Namijski
>>
>>82140559
Nemijski>Timajor>Venit>Capri
At least that is how I always saw the order.
>>
>>82140518
Hmm, I was thinking mostly shanty villages, as actual cities would imply some degree of large scale organizations which theya re unlikely to have given the disjointed nature of their rebellion.
>>82140555
> Yurt cities
I think these can be fairly mobiile, as theya re basically tents, so could be an option.

>>82140559
Good catch. I think this is good.
>>
>>82140571
Timajor is the neighbour of capri.
So it's Nemijski>Venit>Timajor>Capri
>>
>>82140559
>the Kossoki encountered the Timajor and had a larger impact on their culture than anyone else,
Are the Timajor a subsection of the Kossoki, or a distinct Ethnical Group? Right now in the docs they are grouped under the Kossoki, but I'm not sure that should be the case
>>
>>82140544
>>82140555
History isn't always a straight line of progression. The Middling Tsars present a moment of transition that makes Lapsaria feel more like a country than a train-shuttle of important characters.

>>82140583
The Venit and the Timajor rivers are close enough that they are connected by the waterways of the old Capital. They're near enough beside each other.

Old timajor was a different ethinicity, but they mixed a lot with some kossoki.
The kossoki changed, and so did the Timajors.
>>
>>82140593
> The Middling Tsars present a moment of transition
i know, it's just a matter of, instead of portraying them as absolutely expendable, we say they at least had some impact on stabilizing/improving the country. Nothing glorious, or moniker worthy, but still something to make sure they aren't just time filler.
Tough I'd say 2 in a row of such Tsars does seem a bit much. Maybe have one of the before the builder and one afterwards? We can have the reign of the one before be somewhat short to compensate and still have the Builder be early
>>
>>82140571
yeah that's what I've been feeling too
>>82140583
unless it's Nemijski>Timajor>Capri>Venit
>>82140589
basically the Original culture of the river people have been more or less totally assimilated into Lapsarian culture, and the remaining Timajor follow the Kossoki way of life after their cities were conquered.
The Kossoki are a mixed people, between Durite and other Lapsarian ethnic groups, so to them the Ideals are more important than blood.
Both the Timajor and the Kossoki consider the Timajor Kossoki to be true Kossoki, even if they have different origins.
>>
>>82140598
Because it's the main river besides capri (and tge one that is used tge moat now that the bay got ghosted), and the old capital apparently was built where they meet/in between both, so they nees to be close by.
>>
>>82140635
I'm personally fine with one ruling for a year before falling down the seawall.
Accidents happen.
>>
>>82140625

>>82140641
That works too. Venit being colder could also explain why they were those masks and full body clothes.
>>
>>82140625
>More like a proper city, and more like a large group of yurt together. A durite group would arrive, add their tents, and eventually leave.
That could work. Maybe near important river-crossings or grazing fields, Durites would gather to exchange stories, wares and congregate, and eventually go on wit their roamings
The Lapsarians probably destroyed these cities when they arrived as they presented a way for Durites to unify and a threat to their authority
>>
>>82140641
>>82140589
at least that's what the guy that was working on them with me thought, he made more of the Timajor than I did desu I just gave them a timeline to explain why they were they way they are

I think just falling off the seawall would be silly (Not that tthese things don't happen IRL, but still). "Falling" off the seawall, on the other hand, could be interesting.
Maybe this Tsar opposed the idea of a new capital, so his younger brother backed by other nobles decided to expedite his retirement.

I see, that's prettty interesting. Maybe we should make that somewhat clearer in the Tiamjor entry in the Docs? Add a line saying something like "Altough not ethnically part of the Kossokis, the Timajor share a strong cultural bond with this group, and both cutures consider each others as brothers"

The Timajor Kossoki don't actually share much in the way of genetic mixing with the Kossoki.

So on a completely different note
Horse breeds, who's got what?

for the Kossoki they have their wooly horses, I was thinking, judging by the size of the horses in the two on the compass that have them, the Kossoki horses are light and fast, but not particularly strong or enduring.
They'll outrun just about anyone but they're a bad pick for long distances, tending to need frequent resting on long journeys.
Unable to carry that much load, limiting the armour that the Kossoki use to basically none, and tending to avoid heavier weapons, carrying only a light lance, a sabre, and a pistol or a few pistols and a sabre, and maybe a rifle.

The Durite Horse looks to me like it's larger and more hearty. Probably still decently fast, but being able to go further without a rest for the long pilgrimages. able to carry a more, but a fully loaded Durite horse would likely need to rest just as often as a lightly loaded Wooly horse.

Jasentorf likely has a preference for larger strong but slow draft horses to carry the weight of their armour, as well as any armour they wish to put on the horse. Absolutely devastating in a massed charges due to their heavy weight.

I don't really have that many ideas for Lapsaria, probably something kinda middle of the road.

and Masovii probably a decent mix of strength and speed

>>82141628

Rather than the extremely vertical Pangea (which makes the map look strange by stretching it out on the poles, I'll do a Horizontal one with Lapsaria being on the NW extremity.
>>
>>82141891
Lapsarians collect horse breeds like a horse collects flees.
The existing equestrian traditions are all over the place, and some of the really old guard are so autistic they remain in river cogs. Only river cogs. Others picked up light traditions, others are Jasenboos. A couple have Kossoki relatives and style themselves as Kossoki but Lapsarian Nobility. There are a few in the hinterlands who just use Durite weapons and arms.
Then the commoners take whatever horses they can get, though they also like mules. Meanwhile kelp farmers utalalize a type of sea-cow bred for strength to tend to their fields. They also utilize the dredge from the cow pens for fertilizer, both above and below the water.

Accordingly, all of her neighbors laugh at Lapsaria for their weird cavalry traditions, though the new model army has actually played to their strengths.

I'd make it so that 'primitive' is replaced with 'standardized.' The Venitii already had cannons even if they were rare, and they likely proliferated them among their neighbors who ran with them, as they actually had the resources to make them on a large scale. Likely the Lapsarians just threw some muskets at the Yechods and said 'get cracking.'

>>
>>82142090
not the worst idea though, instead of a setting background event, we could have it as a potential campaign idea that the powers that be are tryna conceive a new fishy heir from the Tsarina
>>
>>82142097
I would agree. I'd place it closer to 7-10 years out, so the Tsarina could remember it more fully than a 5-6 year old could.

I think it should happen a few years into the Regency and be sparked by The Last Captain finding out about the Bargain rather than sparked by the Old Tsar's death.
>>
>>82142041
>great events
I want to notice, that for example Romans had simple attitude towards calendar, they could just restart it when it become too disynchronized with weather, while in East Asia first year of rule of new Emperor is usually the first year of calendar, you can even use fictional starting points like "from the creation of Earth".
So year 0 not necessary must be great event.

That's the trick part.
>>82142081
>'primitive' is replaced with 'standardized.'

>>82142116

>>
>>82142041

Lapsaria might just use the Japanese style calendar that resets with ever regent
>>
>>82142128
>primitive shot weapons in the 1200s
It could be just hand rockets, easily.
>>
>>82142097
Capri bay was apparently what sealed the Bargain though, so it can't be too late afterwards

I think moving the Air desertion down is probably the better idea as airships are established to be mostly run off of oil, so their development definitely came after the bargain by a while.
>>
>>82142128
Good luck developing it further when you have to go to the salt lands to get it though.
China had black powder for a long time and it stuck with rockets for the most part, imagine it that shit was only found there as well?
>>
>>82142191
why can't the bargain be sealed years later? I feel like that doesn't take a lot of creativity to solve.
>>
I personally think that rather The Deacon being the sole regency it should have him be a primary figure among a few members of the nobility who took on the role of ruling in council while the Tsarina grew up.

It gives more opportunities for intrigue.
>>
>>82142154
Potentially. But muskets emerged en-mass in the 1500s along with more advanced artillery pieces.
Have them emerge earlier but actual standardization comes with the Tsardom. It feels like we're rushing again.
>>
>>82142210
maybe the Deacon had the regency because the old Tsar gave him the custody of the Tsarina, but he had to rule through a council of nobles because he was a priest?
>>
>>82142210

>>
>>82142191
>airships are established to be mostly run off of oil
Did oil become accessible only after the bargain or it was just much more difficult to get.
>>82142221
>standardization
It became a thing only in the second part of XIXth century, which is closer to current time in setting rather to past.
>>
>>82142221
Eh, the whole point is that Lapsaria is cheating with the bargain and speedrunning industrialization.

It was already accessible by hunting whales and using dredge pits.

well the technology of Lapsaria post Bargain and in the current year is roughly 1840-1860

It was possible to get, just not in quantities that allowed it to be a primary industrial resource.
As far as I can tell, pre Whale fall, oil was mostly used for it's more esoteric qualities by those that could afford it.
>>
>>82142269
So I guess establishing air fleet few years before bargain is okay.
>>
>>82142269
so dredge pits are basically excavations of ancient sea monster fossils, right? That's fucking metal.
>>
>>82142239
Actually I like this.

>>82142240
Perhaps he has custody of the Tsarina, but the regency was given to The Lapsarian Count or another noble figure who knew The Old Tsar. This would be done to appease the nobility so a member of the clergy did not sit the throne. Then the Deacon exercised a great deal of power as the Tsarina's guardian.
>>
>>82142247
In the uniform military sense, but graded arquebi patterns were a military staple for a reason during the 1600s. Perhaps if we define when more primitive guns first emerged in the principalities. Cannons and like?
>>
>>82142332
I feel during the interregnum the Deacon would mostly be working from the shadows and preparing the Tsarina for her reign by instilling a trust in him.
>>
Gonna sleep after hour, probably.
Anyone has ideas how fill gap between 10 and 35 years AB?
>>82142360
Okay, may be I will add 60-80 years period when muskets appeared in the next iteration of timeline
>>
>>82142385
And trying to cover up everything he did up to that point as well.
Maybe it was when he planted the seed for the order and the police.
>>
>>82142385
>>82142403
Yes, which makes sense if he worked from the shadows and wasn't the regent calling the shots.
>>
>>82142399
>Anyone has ideas how fill gap between 10 and 35 years AB?
The Siege of High Harbor, where they tried to take back the airships, would last for years straight with lots of midnight balloon supply runs by insane pirates.

High Harbor would be terrible to siege because lots of parts of it are difficult to get to outside of airships.

'ate groundies
'ate the tsarina
'ate the bargain
luv me sky
luv me rebellion

>>82142399
I mean the 200-250 years before the Bargain sounds about right for early muskets, for the earliest firearms, probably closer to 400 years for a tube on a stick that you stick a flame in by hand.
>>
>>82142417
Maybe he had a spot on the duma juat because he was the guardian.
But he faked being uninterested in worldly matters.
Maybe he conviced another member of the council to come up with the secret police, but in a way that madenit seem it was their idea?
>>
>>82142454
That sounds like a great idea.
>>
>>82142444
probably important to note that Bargain wouldn't be something the vast majority of people were aware of

also would sky pirates hate the boon, as it would be what allowed for greater airship development
>>
>>82142479
Most don't know, but the Skypirates deserted right after the Capri Bay Rebellion, so some members might know about the Bargain just as The Last Captain did.

It would make getting rid of the Sky Pirates a top priority because information is leaking.
>>
>>82142445
The problem is that an arquebus is a musket, and there was a good two centuries were the heavy style arquebus was the dominant fire-arm.

Idea. the Arquebus emerged a long-ass time back in the Salt-Pans, and was the Siglafi 'noble weapon' instead of a knight class. However 'muskets' as in later non-arquebi spread out all over when someone figured out how to make powder without salt.
It better fits the 300-200 year time frame, and theres a precedent for gun innovation.
>>
>>82142490
how about this
to keep the development of airships a result of gifts received and have the sky pirates desert as a result of Capri bay.

many of the crews of early airships were members of the navy before they were reassigned, a number of them were at Capri bay and made it away with their lives.

When they got put on arguably the most liberating machines of war since devised, they realized how the Tsardom would be entirely unable to stop them this time and they mutinied took off with the fleet.
>>
>>82142539
Now that makes sense.
>>
>>82142569
I feel as if it should be more a desertion caused by the events at Capri bay rather than them just deciding to do so after getting them.

I do think it being partially because they realized that the Tsardom would have a very hard time sieging High Harbor would make sense, but the death of the captain and people making it out of Capri and despising the Tsardom after is a common theme.
>>
>>82142444
>The Siege of High Harbor
Did Lapsarians fail?
>>
>>82142640
Could be they believed in what the captain was preaching but feared openly supporting him because they didn’t like his odds. But when the odds became more even they saw that the time was now
>>
>The Ugly Princess
>hates her bandages
>her gills closed up last year, cries when she remembers mother
>what freedom she has is found exploring the tide pools of her family estate
>"Uncle Deacon, can I really do anything when I am Tsarina?"

I don't expect this to be added, just flavor.
>>
>>82142683
>>82142640
actually I like that, basically the captain became their martyr, the desertion of the sky marines the continuation of his rebellion and the sky pirates and Capri bay ghosts his legacy
>>
>>82142711
As cute as that is, the Tsarina is a normal girl.

The Tsarina is a bisexual icon

I may be reading the alignments wrong, though.

Well, it was discussed that it was mostly digging up silt for fertiilizers, but adding in the Acnient Fossils angel is really metal
>>
>>82142116
So really we could totally have year 1 be the tsarina’s ascension to the throne. The calendar is just always reset whenever a new ruler rises and that’s the tradition. Even medieval monarchies that used another calendar lots of peasants would use the passing of kings or their local lords as major points in history since they’d only see the passing of a monarch only once or twice in their lives anyway.
