This is a crowd sourced endeavor to fill out a political compass, started in the last political compass thread around the idea of odd compass axis, in this case:
>FISH
Aligned to the vast world sea
>STONE
Aligned with the vast interior continent.
>PAIN
Unasked for, Transformative, New.
>FAITH
Preserving, Primordial, Sought.

What was produced is pic related, the setting of LEVIATHAN the name is a work in progress, the World of Sacred Oil and Broken Stone. The purpose of this thread is to organize to finish filling out the political compass, and possibly expand the compass if we end up running out of room too quickly.

If you wish to claim a spot please ask and it will be marked. Please also state what you plan on putting in the square. The format to ask is [X,Y] axis, measured in distance from the top right corner. If you wish to redraw an existing square please state so, draw, and the thread will decide if it should replace the square (but we prefer you add new squares.
>>
The 'story' of the setting is emergent. So far what is apparent is:
> Lapsarians have a deal with the Ocean Gods for oil, and perhaps for more.
> Part of the bargain involves suppressing other groups, such as the cult of the Monolith, for which the Slab Breakers created the Slab Knights
> Lapsarians Colonize Durites, and a civil war begins between Durite Rebels (and Other separatists) and Lapsarians. This ends up driving more and more Durites into extremism, and into worshiping and making their own bargains with the Fisher King
> Back at Lapsaria, a group of Lapsarian rebels leaded by the Last Captain lose a decisive battle at sea, and were turned into monsters themselves.
> The internal political situation of Lapsaria is also fragile, as the Oil Tycoon makes his plays for power, against the interest of the Hooks (and the State Powers who secretly are in cahoots with The Hooks)
>The combination of old Stone magic & new Oil Alchemy has caused a rapid industrialization.
>The Monolith is far away in the interior of the continent, away from Lapsarians
>The continent is known as The Vast, the world exists as a Pangea with it being the only landmass. Long-term sea voyages outside of the sight of land never became common until recently.

Re-posting for the new thread:
Not trying to rock the boat here, but still not vibing to hard on the Leviathan name. It isn't bad by any means, but I feel like the world has expanded beyond it.
What about something relating to the worlds resources?

>"A Song of Dust and Oil"
>"The Tale of Oil and Dust"
or just simply,
>"Of Dust and Oil" (ODAO)

just some thoughts. How's everyone feeling about the setting name?
>>
>>82076742
I think

"A Tale of Fish and Stone" is valid
But "Of Dust and Oil" is neat

why the rocks are bleeding?
>>
>>82076775
>why the rocks are bleeding?
They just do that, it's normal in this setting.
>>
>>82076742
I like Leviathan, because it can have the mythological meaning and reference King Fisher, a meaning of being large, referecing the Monolith, the continent being a pangea, the entire sea, but it can also have the phylosophical meaning since the conflict started when tge Tsarina started to reform and centralize.
>>
>>82076785

Don't ask questions
The rocks are not alive
The fish cannot talk
>>
>>82076775
yeah "Of Dust and Oil" might be my favorite so far. Or maybe even "The Vast: Kingdoms of Sacred Oil & Broken Stone"
>why are the rocks bleeding
that is exactly what you should be wondering...
people are turning into sentient stone slabs and subsequently being crushed for their dust to be used in the industrial process for gunpowder, armor, walls, etc.

I'll throw on some additional global information, other countries and peoples (potentially) include...
>Masovii, the Commonwealth of Opal and Oak Stone. Probably multiethnic and deeply inland [Stone / Faith]
>The Sunset Islands. Deep to the south, source of the good (coral) shit and swarthy folk. [Fish / Faith & Pain]
>The Kossoki People. Mixed residents of the Tsardom stuck between the Durits and Lapsarians, also nomads. [Everywhere]
>The Hasyym People. Oil-Addict Mountain folks who underwent complete demographic, the Industrialists probably benefited. [Pain]
>The Aemii People. Stone-Yak herders hanging out on the Northern fringes of the state. Just wanna make cheese. [Stone / Faith]
>The Yechod People. Agnostic glassworkers who are reviled for not being on for this Stone and Fish stuff. [Pain]
>Gem-Empire of Goguryeo. Distant land that is probably on the other side of the Vast. Weird and coral-pilled. [Stone / Pain]
>The Venit People. Psychotic royalists and river folk, almost too rabid to be kept around by the Lapsarians. Almost. [Stone / Pain]

One last concept to try to round out Lapsarian society:
>Synanceian Royal University Professor
>slowly growing out of old monastic roots, but not entirely secular
>key to maintaining rapid pace of technological advancement
>obsessed with the idea of extinction and civilizational collapse, pays smuggler and salvage diver under the table for artifacts and fossils

>Prays that some of the misshapen fossils she is brought are elaborate forgeries

It's maybe a little TOO stereotypically Cthulhu Mythos, so let's go with something Mary Anning inspired. Very early paleontologist, did a lot of discoveries in marine fossils.

It's okay if this doesn't make it in. I just wanted to do something scholarly.

>>82077372
Combat in LEVIATHAN is already kind of a nightmare with people turning into rocks, getting so high on oil and coral you need to tell them you've killed them before they die and scaly terrors that have human eyes crawling out of every water-source. Which ironically could make it a really good wargame as the division between sharp and hard damage produces a very interesting but simple dichotomy of damage types. Gotta say I really like the setting.

So since the best way to travel to and from the Vast is by river, what are some of the major rivers in Lapsaria?
I know this seems pedantic, but this is probably the first step we want to take before making a map of the place. Plus rivers themselves can have quite the personality.

Here's an idea: One river for each of the three minor Fish "gods". Their home base is in the bay of each river, or at least near it.

The Capri River is a fourth river and should be closed off to most traffic. Maybe the river has always flooded often, and while it used to be verdent farmland that was well irrigated through dams, it's now overrun with swamps and things best not named lurk in the flooded ruins of hamlets along its bank. You can smuggle shit from the Vast down it if you REALLY want to, but you'll have to make it through Capri Bay and good luck with that.

> It is if you can afford to bribe the Venits
> If you can't most would rather slit their wrists than get on a boat on the Venit, who are known to sacrifice to Auntie Angler, their cruel matron

> Gentle Timajor, the Winding river which is now choked to all fuck with every bit of traffic
> Just filled with regular river bandits, some of whom tend to resemble soldiers
> Favored by the Eel Sire, who is said to sleep cross its full length

> Distant Nemijski, the Distant River that reaches the furthest into the interior of the Vast
> Solemn and pale, while it is an easy river to sail, the war has been absolutely ruthless for traffic
> Father Oyster is said to sing Pearls of Stone at the mouth of the river, which are symbols of privilege and decadence.

Just my thoughts for the three lesser Fisher Gods, to correspond with their positions. Auntie is more giving to Pain, the Sire is vast and solemn and Father Oyster is actually known to work with Stone, in his own Fishy way.

What if this is all just a long con by the Angler?
Idea:
>the Angler lured the person the Stone Admiral once was to the Sea, starting the Age of Sailing
>the Bargain was of her design, but she always plots from afar
>she waits, patient as the stars, until it is her turn to ascend using the blood of all those lured into her trap
Just a bit of conflict to add to the left-bottom corner. Father Oyster bears the True Gift, Angler is the False Gift. But she's winning.
>>
>>82077646
Pearls are formed as a response to an irritant, covering it with layers of nacre until smooth. Maybe Father Oyster should be associated with distractions from Pain more than purifying of it, burying it down beneath beauty but never actually fixing it. Thus the "symbols of privilege and decadence", he offers a way to distance yourself from the world that doesn't really help anything.
>>
>>82077967
A handful of texts look a bit weird, but nothing that damages readability (Like The Dredging Pit Owner and The Dust of progress). My biggest issue is how it looks weird for some of the non-standard entries, like all lower-left god or The Brackish Ones. It feels like the different background colour doesnt stretch all the way to the borders and cheapens a bit of the effect, for example
>>
>>82078012
I mean, he is helping, but more for his own benifit. The process of pearling is actually kind of similar to the existing process of Quartz polyps, except as an external transformation instead of an internal one. If used on a person, it would take a while but the pain would fade. Although what's formed is arguably neither of fish nor stone.
Kinda like coral maybe.

In an Pangea continent the interior of the continent would be a vast desert and essentially be impassable. At best you'd have nomads on the deserts edge and real cultures lining the coasts, and a vast uninhabited central area.

Depending on how the Pangea formed tectonically they also might be a massive super mountain range at its center where multiple continental plates are pressed together.

This could be the real location of the monolith.
>>
>>82078392
>In an Pangea continent the interior of the continent would be a vast desert and essentially be impassable.
Not necessarily. You could have vast glaciers in the far north feed rivers that create fertile river valleys in the extreme interior.
>>
>>82078392
How big is the Monolith? Maybe there's no mountain range, maybe there's just it. All the pressure that should have gone into making a mountain, whether volcanic or fold or whatever, instead just pushed this enormous pillar of Stone out of the earth.

Proposal: The men they tempt and draw in they fuse to their bodies, symbiotically grafting their flesh together in an eternal embrace. This actually happens with some species of real anglerfish, the males are much smaller than the females and melt their flesh together with digestive enzymes so that the healing process combines them together into a single organism. That way the female always has a ready supply of sperm cells instead of having to hunt down a mate. Female anglers with as many as eight males fused to them have been found.

While I'm not dismissing the idea, I prefer the Angler and her minions to be more long term plotters. So it isn't the typical "enthrall with song and then fuck/kill", it's "make them financially dependent on their gifts/goods, then corrupt them mentally, spiritually, and physically".

So sure, body horror, but please let's have them be more than just a monster but a faction with a finger on the scales of the world.

Yeah, I feel like I don't have as strong an idea of what the Angler is supposed to be about as you do. But I think the ideas aren't incompatible. Just make the fusion be the end-state of a long process, for those most physically degenerated victims. They've become so dependent on the Angler and her minions that they can't even maintain homeostasis on their own, just like the male anglerfish. The "embrace" would be not a sudden "whoops, I talked to the fish lady, now I'm one of her organs", but almost like a perverse reward for long service and allegiance to the Angler. You have done well, and suffered much in order to please them, and now you may rest within their bosom, forever.

>panning
Salt pans

- an idea for [4,7] [5,7]
Salt as a whole I see as a bridge between Stone and Fish.
>Within the interior of the Vast, large arid salt pans stretch for miles.
>99% of the time it is an alter of stone, where Masovii clerics bring sacrifices to kill, dry, and eventually mummify as the salt steals their life's essence.
>on the rarest instances when the pans are given rain, the surface becomes a mirror as water covers the ground and seawater is made in a desert.
>The Ocean Gods' influence takes hold for hours, at most a day, until the pans evaporate dry again, but in that time the mummies walk, act, create, and destroy across the salt mirror.

[4,7] The Mirror Walker
>Preserved for years
>Used to be someone's Mummy
>Restless leg syndrome when it rains
>Sea's Salt

[5,7] The Salt Shaman
>Big man on the Salt Pan
>Sacrifices must be made by the Masovii
>Whoa that's a lot of sacrifices
>Sees Salt

I see stone has become basically fish but on the right side of the compass while I was asleep. I guess a collaborative game will always tend to despise power imbalances as people pick a faction. That's a bummer. I guess Durite rebels are pretty dumb to turn to the Sea for boons if they coulda just used the superpowers their own culture gives them.

Anyways, on to the salb knight captain
>>
>>82079764
I think only one thing on the right side implies super powers, and that's the statue. I think it maybe should be changed to a statue that wear's skin instead of a person who becomes a statue. I drew it originally because I thought it was neat

I apologize for spoiling the power imbalance with that. I will amend it tomorrow morning. It is getting late for me.

I will change it to something more like:
>Uncarved, unasked for.
>Wears the skin of the dead.
>The Monolith has been angered.
>Kills indiscriminately, for all have proven disappointing.
>>
>>82079764
>touched by monolith
>become insurgent
>don’t get touched
>become rebel
Pretty simple.

I will think on changing it. The Monolith killing indiscriminately when displeased may be good to keep the imbalance and have it make sense why Durites would be pushed away from the stone.
>>
>>82079814
lmao, don't apologize this is literally a collaborative game. I can't expect it to just go how I like it. I was just giving my sipleased reaction, didn't call for other's work to be changed.

Slab Anon here and I fully endorse this.
Maybe this guy is what Captain-Knight Patryk should be?
Basically using a square to imply that the Knights are slowly becoming something new due to their exposure to constant stone polyps and unmitigated pain.
>>
>>82079727
I am considering tomorrow drawing something for [3,3]. Something called a 'Crawling Clam' Crew. Which is the Lapsarian version of a tank. It'd run on oil.
>>
Is there a discord associated with this? I'd love to play this as like, a tabletop RPG or something.
>>
>>82079912
>Is there a discord associated with this?
No, it is not developed enough yet for it. I said I could dig out my Homebrew system (which was originally designed for Fantasy Civil War) and do a design document.

Tomorrow we'll see what happens, but I want to keep things on /tg/ and not Discord. Discords tend to become really insular and closed off.

I'll stick around, I'll keep my title of Rubblemaker Anon.
>>

I'd rather not have a discord for this because the few times I've had a /tg/ project move to discord it falls apart

I would be willing to cede the top right, and have the Rubblemaker instead be top center on the Stone Side. Indicating he'd become obsessed with his pain, which would be shown by the fact that some of the blood in his design is his own, pouring from his helmet.
>>
>>82080188
You do you, I'm not so much into the "eldritch gods in every corner, chose the kind of wizard you wanna be" style of compass, which is why I gave the Slab Captain mundane motives. Change that as you guys feel fits best with your vision.
>>
>>82080236
Yeah, I kinda think only King and Monolith should be Gods. Stuff like Ziz is just a big dumb bird.
>>
>>82080339
I'd say the monolith needn't even be considered a god. More of a barely understood and incomprehensible motive force, operating under a set of criteria which the human mind can barely even begin to comprehend.
>>
>>82080354
A god offers something in return for worship. The Monolith gives freely to any who seek it, and asks for nothing in return. Whatever befalls those who seek it out is purely upon them, the Monolith does not care nor is truly responsible. THEY sought it out, after all.

I respectfully disagree but I think that's what makes this type of project cool, very unique blend of concepts.
Your lore for the Captain knight didn't seem to encompass pain in particular so maybe some other things can get moved around?
I don't think the top Right corner needs to be full eldritch god status, but having it be something less mundane seems to fit for the time being at least.
>>
Are we going to attempt to built a system for it after the chart is finished ?
>>
>>82080472
I believe previous anons suggested using preexisting systems to run this setting.
Blades in the Dark was mentioned before if memory serves.
Creating a brand new system from scratch might be a whole other can of worms
>>
>>82080487
I would advise to use other system, but copy a few elements from BITD for fun. Savage Worlds and Shadows of the Demon Lord come to mind

As for character creation
Some classless system with point but attributes and skills

Morale/sanity would also be an interesting mechanic.
>>
>>82076577
I'm claiming 5,1.

Heres my idea:
>Slightly land oriented
>Weird philosophy/religion movement that was invented a hundred years ago or so.
>Objective is freeing humanity from the joke of everything terrible.
>Wants to kill the fisher king, probably doomed to fail.
>Wants to destroy the monolith
>All the nine yards.
>Highly laborist, Georgist, etc. Labor movements and the like. Also a little of a republican bent.
>Hunted like pests by the government and several undercover orgs of many affiliations.
>They refuse to die.
>They even overthrew a small coastal city-state in the continent.
>They seem to only be alive because they and their ideas refuse to die.
>Their ideas are memetic as fuck, maybe a little too memetic...
>A lot of ideological variety, from hardcore terrorists to people who want to make a support base and then see what to do from there.

>Probably doomed to fail, unless...
Do tell me what you think and what parts you think we could keep and what not. If the idea is in any way salvageable at all, of course.
>>
>>82080667
Fuck, will continue to dump ideas for this theoretical faction.
>Rejects the sea
>Rejects the land
>Strives for something more
>Man they say, but is it really man?
>No one really knows who founded their ideas, their founding book doesn't have an author or the mark of any printing company in fact. The first copies that is.
>Must be nothing.
>>
>>82080667
>>82080766
But please, do say what do you think about this thing so I can refine it if you think it's good at all.
>>
>>82080667
>>82080766
Sounds pretty gay and not really related to the setting
>>
>>82077906
The familial roles aspect does work, but I also agree that 'Auntie Angler' doesn't sound quite right. I think it's the alliteration, makes her sound a little too friendly (which probably isn't the right vibe).

Maybe 'Mother Angler' or 'Sister Angler' would work better.
>>
>>82080782
don't be a fag and shoot an anon down, at least give some feedback
>>
>>82080782
Well, yeah, I guess.
But please elaborate. I'd rather you give me a reason. If it's good enough I'll renounce my claim and try to think up something better.
>>
>>82080809
The description ended up less nice than the name sounded initially
Maybe just make it Aunt angler
>>
>>82080809
Maybe it's fake friendly, it's an angler, after all.
>>
>>82080844
Or ironic. Not the first time people assign overly friendly names to things that could rip your arm off.
>>
>>82080667
>>82080766
basically this makes assumptions about the king and the monolith that line up with a left libertarian emancipation movement and then makes a left libertarian emancipation movement. I guess you can do it, the compass is open for everyone.
>>
>>82080853
>>82080844
>>82080809
Granddaddy Nurgle
>>
>>82080844
>>82080853
Fair point. I'd argue that 'Mother Angler' also has that false/ironic friendliness (and ties in nicely to 'Father Oyster'), but if people do like the name 'Aunt Angler' then it works for me.
>>
>>82080929
I tried to imply that they were being used by a newcomer god trying to become a player on the board, maybe I made them up to be more successful than I intended they're not a major force or anything, hmm. Yeah. Doesn't seem that good of an idea. but I'll wait for some other people to give their 2 cents.
>>
>>82080952
Other Idea I came up with is very simple, a miner.
>>
>>82080819
I did. It doesn't relate to or frankly fit in to what's already been established.
>>82080834

There's no focused idea as well - you basically made an Mary Sue faction (and yes, that it's a faction instead of a character is another problem) that the basis is - we're against everything else because we're special and based and they try to beat us but can't because
>They refuse to die
which is 1-shite, 2- has nothing substantial behind it, and 3- just uninteresting
And the idea of ideological variety is stupid when you're trying to say they have memetic effects on their "ideas". One contradicts the other
>>
>>82081013
AH fair, that's very fair. Thank you.
I unclaim 5,1.
It was a stupid Idea.
Now before I claim anything my other idea is a miner, which I think fits more with the theme of the setting.
Maybe we can draw of miners superstitions, for this theoretical idea of mine.
>>
>>82081032
Hmm, but is it a useless role.
Hmmm.Might be already filled by the slab breaker.
No no no, I don't think so.
This could be more crystal-oriented.
Purposefully or not. This man might be an enemy of the earth, or maybe not, just sacred of it, extracting whatever the company wants him to extract. The dim light of a lantern and a pickaxe his only defences against whatever is below.
He hears singing. He doesn't know where it comes from.
Offers sacrifices to whatever spirit will protect him, down there.
>>
>>82081090
Maybe not crystal oriented, but it's different from the slab breaker and similar because it's underground.
Hmm, if I were to put a claim in. These could be the guy's descriptions:
>He thinks he has seen at least one rock bleed while digging.
>He hears singing. He doesn't know where it comes from.
>Offers sacrifices to whatever thing will protect him, down there.
Maybe one more but maybe not.
>>

>He hears singing from the earth.

Please extrapolate upon the relationship of the Fish/Pain Durite Rebel with the Stone/Faith Durite Insurgent. Are these ostensibly the same group but have been corrupted/infused by the opposing powers? How did this come to be?
>>
>>82083017
They have the same goal, which is to fight the Lapsarian occupation of Durite land, something which seems very difficult or even impossible in the face of the economic and technological disparity between the two. Durite rebels are those who will go to all lengths to fight the occupiers and have gone so far as to take on fish mutations to more effectively wage guerilla war. This makes them much more effective, but also makes them into outcasts and pariahs among their own people. They fight for a life they may never return to.

The insurgents also fight the lapsarian occupation but they haven't abandoned their ways. Instead they have been granted some kind of power from the monolith, much like the Singer in Stone, and so they didn't have to give up their culture to fight the occupiers, so they can hide in villages and stuff.
>>
>>82083017
The feeling I have is that the power of the Monolith is not something actively sought ought out, as it is unpredictable, and only select few end up actually gaining any sort of benefits, instead of just calcifying and turning into slabs straight away. It's also not easy to get on purpose, as the Monolith doesn't answer to prayers, and it's a matter of finding the right polyp to spread to you
The Gift of the Sea, on thne otehr hand, is muchn more active and something that can be sought after with much more consistency. So maybe the ones who turned to the sea were more rash individuals sick of waiting, whod decided to act upon their troubles, making deals in exchange for power in opposition to waiting for power to come to a few lucky individuals.
>>
>>82083017
Insurgents are based, rebels are cringe.
Even if they drive the invaders out, the rebels will have lost something that even death and subjugation couldn't take from them.
Insurgents don't do that.
>>
>>82083017
I'd imagine it's a case where the Insurgent keeps to the old ways, still having the support of his people. The Rebel has rejected the old ways, his actions being seen as too extreme or taboo even by his fellow Durites. The two probably fight each other as much as they fight Lapsarians. There's plenty of real world examples of differing rebel groups being massively at odds with each other, even when they have a common enemy.
>>
>>82083017
I think both are different types of extremists of the durite guerrila.
My idea for why there would even be some durites that would take the bargain with fish if they could stay aligned with stone is because the monolith-touched are rarer, or take a long time to develop. They are probably singers in stone that took up arms, so every time a monolith-touched dies, you can't exactly replace them, meanwhile all you need to get more superpowered rebels is to make a deal with the hooks and trade your humanity and faith for it.
Most of the normal durite tribals should look like the pilgrim.

>>
So the setting is something like a mix between sunless sea and dishonored?

Kinda? Those are definitely some influences a lot of people designing gravitated towards, but the Stone part of the setting is pretty distinct from those influences
>>
>>82083266

>>
>>82083146
I like the idea of the insurgant being a singer in stone that took up arms, and that there are of course many insurgents with no quartz improvements, but they're not represented on the compass. I prefer that over just saying "the rebels just don't care about their culture or about being happy so they made a dumb choice'

>have an affinity for plains and steppes, tend to not get that close to large bodies of water.
>Don’t worship the King because he’s just some fish, don’t worship the monolith, as a stationary permanent stone is the opposite of their way of life.
>staunchly religious, following the state religion of Lapsaria
>easily swayed by religious leaders
>due to their skills as cavalry and their loyalty to the church, they are often hired on to quell the Durites, and hunt down pilgrims.
>occasionally have conflict with the Tsardom as it’s strict borders interfere with their way of life.
>the only reason they haven’t had a rebellion of their own to control the borderlands is they’re too dedicated to raiding the Durites, and the religious leaders are in Lapsaria.
>their source of food is mostly from the herds of animals they keep and what they can forage
>the only new technology they’re really accepting of is weapons, they like getting new guns, but find the factories that make them abominable.
>lacking specific leaders, they travel where the herds wish to go, during wartime leaders are chosen by whoever can take control of the group, and they have no authority off of the battlefield.

>>
>>82084161
King Fisher not really a god, he's just the King Fisher, he loves his children equally, he gives gifts to those who ask. The Lapsarians have the great bargain with him, so secretly all of Lapsaria runs on king fisher oil. With the Durites, only a minority of them have chosen to ask the sea for boons, and even those that have resent him for it.

At the time where that was done, the king fisher was still the only way of getting an edge for them.

I see the setting as the Lapsarians have been overlords of the Durites for a while, whereas the bargin is a relatively recent development that they've used to increase that grip. The durites are continuing to fight back, while other nations are happy to fund them from afar but basically see what the hell happens and how it all plays out, at least short term.
>>
>>82080444
So what is the word on the sky pirates? Very high pain, neutral fish/stone?

I have an idea of how to include them:
>Zeppelins were a means by the Lapsarians to travel and deliver cargo to the continental
interior
>The Capri Bay Rebellion happens
>The military splits
>Some of the Air Marines leave and become pirates

Sky pirates are a new and dangerous faction made up of former Lapsarian military loyalists.
>>
>>82084442
Yeah that makes sense, the colonization is long term, the bargain is recent and has intensified things immensely.

To help tighten things up I plan on having a thread/period of time to tighten things up. Basically we will be able to have people scrutinize certain squares they do/don't like and people edit or change them to help ensure the setting is relatively tight with its themes and expectations.
>>
>>82084561
The way I see it, it started with: This is a preindustrial setting and there is unholy portent in the water. That was supplemented with an interesting political situation and a religion involved that had some weirdness to it.

But because it's a compass, there being soemthing changing people on one side of the axis, there has to be one on the other side, so people must be able to decide whether they want fish powers or stone powers, and if there are things on the faith part that maek you more powerful, you gotta have em onthe pain part too. There's not really a coherent narrative anymore, it's a great jumble of eldritch influences overlapping and making each other mundane. Except for the almighty rubblemaster, I think everything can be reconciled well enogh, as long as people just cool down a little bit, take the foot off the gas and play in the sandbox already established instead of constantly upping the ante with another mutating power and another source of magic.
>>
>>82084679
That's why I plan on having a scrutiny period after we finish. It's also why I wanted to imply the Rubble Master and the Knight-Captain were the same person. The Rubble Master isn't eldritch, just a man out of control.

I think a scrutiny period will help things immensely. Thank you for your input, when we get to the editing/slimming down bit we need to have cool heads who will keep the whole things reigned in.

I get what you mean. I am doing some editing:
>the statue ascendant
Making it into literally just a statue that murders people, not someone turned into a statue
>the insurgent/the singer
the Polyps don't have to impart any actual power, maybe clarify that in a Stone Polyp square in [7,8]
>The Rubblemaster
clarify that it's a man losing his mind, not superpowers
>>
>>82084755
I swear someone laid him out in the last thread...
Yea here.
>The Durit Salt Merchant
>Despised for his steep prices and deals with the Lapsarians
>His goods are too vital for even the Durits to kill him
>He owns the water forsaken by fish
>>
>>82084793
I still like the idea that the insurgent is a singer in stone taking up arms, and he is just representing the common durites resisting the invasion.
Because what better way to show a people rebelling than a pacifist religious man going to war?

>Put away the song, took up the bow.
>>
>>82084793

It should be subtle and mysterious

That also ties in in why Durites are seeking the ocean for powers. they do have something from the Stone, but it's long term and not very powerful. If they want great power, they have to make great sacrifices and a bargain

The thing is the original Kossoki post had them being between stone and fish, but were usually crown loyalists.
Of course we're probably gonna need to upgrade to 10x10 and kill CCA's pc doing it so we'll probably have the space.

>>

>>
>>82085107
My suggestion to fish faith would be some sort of explorer or another leftover from the age of sail, the type who discovered the sunset isles and Goguryeo long ago. Now dying and outdated.
>>
>>82085202
I want to make Tsarina's maid or nun for Deacon to show how ordinary lapsarian slowly descends down the rabbit hole of conspiracy (with probably lethal end)

Huh, that'd be interesting. I like it!. You'd put that in [4,7]?
>>
Alright, that leaves us with 6 remaining.
3 [Pain / Fish] and 3 [Fish / Faith]
At least one of those [P/F]s belongs to the Veniti and maybe the matching bandits while the Kossoki might inherent the more neutral [F/F], but that is up in the air. Probably dependent on the art itself.

Now are the Kossoki and the Veniti similar in being mixed people, or do we make the Veniti their own thing?
>>
>>82085312
Yes
>>
>>82085279

>>82085093

>>
>>82085348
>>82085093
If that were to happen, you could move the delvers to [7,8], push The Singer in Stone to [7,7] and use [6,7] for >>82085107's Durite Shamanesse
>>
>>82085348
Go for it, I noticed it too.
>>
>>82085260
well Durites have a slight Mongol vibe about them so I'm thinking more Caucasian Steppe people for the Kossoki. Likely an ethnic offshoot of the Durites that intermixed with Lapsarians and adopted their faith, perhaps centuries old outcasts due to the differences.

They likely have a language that's a creole of both, with some new words here and there.

being almost strictly nomadic, most of their clothing is handmade on the move, so nothing too fancy, though they likely adorn themselves with familial tamgas either on their clothing or on jewelry, and in war time families would likely follow their relative with the banner that bears their tamga.
>>
>>82085319
The Kossoki are definitely a mixed people, but I think the Veniti would be fairly homogeneous

did a shamanesse. Don't ahve text for her but she's supposed to be a traditional Durite priest. I think of them as a kind of shinto monolith's buddhism, so a syncretic religion that kind of attaches itself to the larger one. The latter imo

As before, I will wait until we hit page 9 then make a new thread.

After the 8x8 is done we will transition to slower work, being:
>Lore
>Map
>Rules

I expect a lot of anons to drop off once we hit that point, which is super understandable. In addition we'll do refinement and edits to the 8x8.
>>
>>82086744
I'm thinking of using the blank 8x8 for location brainstorming. We can have art; but drawing rivers, buildings, and forests may be a bit boring.

>>
Haven't caught up yet but was browsing the previous thread when I came across "fuzziness" as a strength of the format in terms of generating engagement. I wondered if that could bee seen as one interpretation of the Pain-Faith axis in terms of hewing the blank face of possibility into concrete history through the painful process of invention and experience. In this sense the Monolith and Fisher both represent an inhuman blankness which is either complete and unmarred without human interference (monolith) or actively seeks to was away the suffering (king). The Captain was a rebel and the Knights are (thus far unsuccessful) god-killers, both are struggling to change forces far larger than themselves rather than be swallowed by history.

Capri as good Samaritan (in that it was surprising because Samaritans were dicks) appeals to me. The ferrymen were corpse scavengers who ended up saving many in the process of harvesting their valuables before they sank. They play up their new repute so hard that even they're not sure if the kind robbery is an act anymore.
>>
>>82087150
As a normalpeoplefag who did the smuggler, marine and HARPOONER, I full support this. You need the mundane to make the weirdness seem weird

When we do the map, we definitely want to define four seperate political "zones":
1. Where Lapsarian control is most pronounced. Things are the most peaceful here and the most "normal" on the surface. The Oil's influence is at maximum, but it's all hidden in the shadows or under a veneer of elitism.
2. The "Colonial Holdings", where Durites have been subjugated for a long period of time and have lost the old ways in part. Durite Rebels are a major threat, as are darker things that prey on those caught up in the confusion of the civil war.
3. The "Frontier", where Durite influence is at maximum. Durite Insurgents are found here, as are most of the Stone/Faith aligned characters. Delvers are a problem, although to the Lapsarians they're just a myth. The Monolith is close.
4. Capri Bay/River. No Man's Land. Lawless and wild to the extreme. Was once the heartland of Lapsaria. The Fish and Ghosts fight for dominion here.

It should be noted that Lapsaria is a really big place and that the Vast is even larger, to the point where that Interior is not really controllable outside of the other nomad groups. There are also the other people inside Lapsaria like the Aemiii way up in the north and the Hasyym who aren't placed.
Additionally the Masovii Commonwealth of Opal and Oak-Stone is present, the Sunset Islands need to be acknowledged, Gilded Jasentorf the House of a Thousand Princes is right beside Lapsaria and is huge but also a decentralized feudal shithole.

The Kossoki people are nomadic but will probably have some map presence, as will the Yechodic people. But Goguryeo is so far away it won't be much of a thing.
>>

God this is looking so great CCA
I had some amendments to the top right corner, to clarify and condense since there's some overlap.
Feel free to add it if you get around to it.
For clarity's sake, the name should be amended to:
>Rubblemaster Patryk
this implies that Rubblemaster is a title
then, just take out the "Knight Captain Patryk" subtitle add an extra line that reads
>truest captain the knights ever known
or something along those lines to your discretion

I think in general the overall lore/story needs a write up to tie up loose ends etc. Was gonna do a big post for it when the next thread kicks off and then we can all tear it apart and figure out what goes where.
Really starting to come together, good work everyone!

Sorry for being autistic, but you've got one black pixel slightly to above and to the right of The Rubblemaster and it bugs me
>>
>>82087952
If you keep the images as one layer, and the grid as another you'll reduce the difficulty of it and still be able to make minor edits. Though they will be noticeably harder.

What about "Mother Whale" as in, it's the same kind of entity as the bottom left corner, but by virtue of being tortured and having its children be hunted for oil it's a vengeful and agonized creature?
>>
>>82088008
>this implies that Rubblemaster is a title
>then, just take out the "Knight Captain Patryk" subtitle add an extra line that reads
This is a great idea

>I think in general the overall lore/story needs a write up to tie up loose ends etc. Was gonna do a big post for it when the next thread kicks off and then we can all tear it apart and figure out what goes where.
Really starting to come together, good work everyone!

Very apprehensive about this though

I'm going to reduce it to a:
>text layer
>image layer
>background later

With that we should be able to do enough edits.

With everyone requesting more normal people I think opening it to an 11x11 would be best. A cross down the center and another row for each side.

If we finish and 11x11 I'll be astonished in all honesty.

Same here for both those things. Feel like this is going to be one of those things that gets reposted a lot.

The insurgents keep up the fight with their faith and humanity intact.
the Rebels sacrifice what they believe in to make deals with the gods of the sea in order to gain power to fight the Lapsarians

i like that the deacon doesn't have oil addiction eyes. He's a pupeteer, not a puppet. At least that's how he sees himself.
>>
Technically I work full time and so have been doing this on the clock. I'll need to slow down and do my actual job for a while. I'll make the new thread then slow down for a few hours until I clock out.
>>
Hmm is there other ways to expand the setting except the compass ? (it's pure art but we can't and probably should not expand it endlessly)
>>
>>82088177
I don't know if having crystals grow in your body makes your humanity intact.
>>
>>82088126
It's not that daunting, having things picked apart isn't super complex. Beating details out of the rough stone is kind of part of the story.

Also if this is going to be 9x9 does that mean there's going to be a center square?

11x11 is the plan, so yes there wil be a center square. I'm expanding the center to allow anons to have more normal folks in a bad situation.

Based.

But could we go back to the 5x5 under the pretext of expanding out the Neutral Middle squares? People want more normal characters, so let's do more normal.
>>
>>82088386
doing normal characters in isolation defeats the point. Their juxtaposition to the weirdness is what makes them useful.
>>
>>82088386
Or we could add the 3 new lines/columns in the middle. It's still at least 9 new spots in the dead center, + 12 near the center, + all the rest

Loooking over, 11x11 will probably be way too much, since i'll grow from 64 -> 121 squares (almost double what we have now). 9x9 or 10x10 would probably be best, and if these new lines were in teh center would still ggive us plenty of space for new stuff
>>
>>82088386
>>82088420
I think giving middle lanes will give enough for the middle to satisfy people.
>>
Y'know, adding MORE stuff doesn't necessarily make things better. There's gotta be some stuff left for the imagine.
>>
>>82088386
I say we wait for the 11x11, which feels like it should be the final one.
For Lapsaria anyways. Jasentorf sounds like it's about to explode.

>>

let's keep it to 9x9 for now, bigger than that is probably far too much.

Sadly it's not very good, but this project of autism has inspired me and so I gave it a try.
In case anybody is wondering, it's supposed to be a little Durite sailor lost at sea in a boat.
>>
>>82088514
I agree
Personally I think 9x9 should be the absolute limit
still plenty of ideas and that way we get the sweetass middle seawall
>>
>>82088574
Decent, but... Whales have flippers
>>
>>82088514
9x9 will give us 17 new spaces to play with, 9 of which will be center-ish. I think itll probably be enough.
In comparison, 10x10 will give us 36 new spaces, of which 16 will be center-ish (Assuming we're focusing on putting spaces in the center regions)
>>82088612
> still plenty of ideas and that way we get the sweetass middle seawall
If we were going 10x10, I wouldn't be opposed to having the seawall be a 2x2 deal and somehow increase its description's importance, but I agree that 9x9 is best

What about
>He doesn't know what he is mining anymore
>He pays honor to anything that he thinks might protect him.

It's your miner so take and use what you want but I would recommend swapping the job and surface lines at least.

I missed this the first time, but it's worth noting that the Kossoki are not crown loyalists, they're loyal to the Lapsarian Church, but hold no particular loyalties to the crown or the Lapsarian people.

for instance if for whatever reason the Deacon decided to overthrow the Tsarina, they'd side with the deacon precluding a reason not to, such as irrefutable proof of him conspiring with fish people to the detriment of the Kossoki people.
>>
>>82088766
I think this is pretty good, if we're going with a 9x9.
Maybe I'd push the Seawween farmer up one, but that'd be a nitpick

>Somewhere, we gotta put a fully mutated gifted human
That's what I envisioned the hatchlings were. The last stage of the transformation, preceded by becoming one of The Hooks
>>

My movement suggestions:
>Coral Peddler and Tsarina Maid both right one square
>Salvage Diver down one square
>Lapsarian Infantryman down one
>>
>>82088846
>Salvage Diver down one square
>Lapsarian Infantryman down one
I think both of these have enough paranioa/suffering in their description to justify being slightly/somewhat pain aligned, respectively.
though maybe the Professor could go down 2, considering right now he's as dep in pain as the schizo maid and a literal statue demon
