>So what exactly is The Hydra? Some kind of hivemind greater good at any cost kind of entity?
I mean, you're not far off. The hydra is a shadowy organization within the RFS (Radical Finalization Solutions, a mercenary company), a kind of semi-religious secret society which the Professional is a low level member of, and the Oni is a high level member of.
They believe in a psychological connectedness theory of personal identity, that is, that what is relevant about your personhood is not the uninterrupted existence of a singular mind, but the continued existence of psychological states, states which you can obviously pass on through intimate relationships with others. So their central thesis can be summed up as: Immortality through Brotherhood.

elaborate on the Basilisk
>>
>>82026398
The basilisk is Rocco's basilisk. He is also, the party currently thinks, the fourth eye and the end game for the Entropic Adventalists who have come across that forum post 1600 years into the post-post-apocalyptic future, together with a bunch of hermetic writings, and taken both to heart.
So, in case you're not familiar with Rocco's basilisk, he's a hypothetical future Super-AI with maximal possible capabilities. It will simulate and torture just those past people which could have helped it come about but didn't, even though they knew they would be tortured for it. It does so not out of malice, but because it knows that the (real) threat of torture will motivate people to help bring it about. The people who it thus makes sense to simulate and torture includes only the set of people who know about this theory, which now includes you. (note that this assumes a concept of personhood that assumes that you have as much interest in your own fate as you have in that of an identical simulation)

The Oracle is looking to prevent The Basilisk, but the problem is that whenever someone learns of it, they tend to start helping to bring it about in order to avoid torture. To the Oracle it's known as "The Fourth Eye", a play on the third eye of future sight, since the basilisk is, in a weird way, a reverse clairvoyant, looking into the present from the not yet realized future. The fourth eye is in the back of the head, like.

What the shit is Thoth?
>>
>>82026491
The party isn't sure yet. What they know is that Thoth is something that can be found in the metadata of a bunch of off-world mail and that spews propaganda about how planet-killers are good, actually. It may be connected to the Outter Horizon (not pictured), a federation of rebel factions to the Laconian kingdom, but more likely is a tool in the arsenal of the Entropic Adventalist to (somehow) bring about the basilisk.
The party isn't sure yet, but after having found a copy of the Corpus Hermeticum with the Rocco's Basilisk forum post added as an extra chapter, they tend to believe the latter, since Thoth is one of the three names used for Hermes Trismagistus in there. And reports of the other two names, Hermes and Mercury, have reached them from other planets, so it seems like a good bet.

Oh, and Thoth was also a character in a children's show from the 3580's where he drove a magical schoolbus and was the moon sometimes.

They've been planet hopping quite extensively, I don't think we had more than one arc on the same planet so far although that may change soon once they learn that the Butcher King is still alive

They started off with a fucked ship and a whole load of debt, both of which they ditched after the death of The Pilot, but their war profiteering has given them enough liquidity to be able to comfortably change planet at their leisure

Why was he supposed to be dead? Did they think they killed him?
>>
>>82027601
Quite the opposite, the king gave them spelunking rights on one of the planetary defense stations of the planet he was in the process of conquering, not knowing that they all connected due to Mandate-era space shenanigans. So he was spelunking from one "side" while the party was coming from another, and they heard what they assumed to be a fight with defense drones but was actually an assassination attempt by his body guards somewhere in the distance. When they got out, the king was missing and soon declared dead by his son.

Elections are slated to start soon, but the party will probably not be in the kingdom at that time.

Redpill me on the Laconian Hoplites and on Kings
>>
>>82028364
Hoplites are, undoubtedly, based. They are the backbone of the Laconian army, and each one of them is worth fifty grunts due to their powerarmour and other equipment that they buy for themselves.

To be a hoplite, you gotta be a citizen, and to be a citizen, you have to own shares in the Laconian national corporation, Deep Space Interstellar. One such shares is the cost of a small ship or multiple houses. To actually become a Hoplite, though, you gotta pledge yourself to a general, and for a general to accept you, you gotta bring gear with you that is worth many times that. Many hoplites can even bring their own warships, and you better believe they sit at the helm. Even the king himself captains his ship, the Tricentenial.

Due to the souped up power armour every hoplite tends to wear, not just into battle but during most hours of the day when on campaign, they are S W O L E. Even with the best servos in the world, can't lug around a post-tech monstrosity so modded up that it acts like pretech without burning 7000 calories a day.

How do they afford this shit? Well, generational wealth mostly, but also: loot. Hoplites go on campaign because it rules and because it's a high status thing to do, but a nice side effect is that they can get looting rights from the king whcih can range from emptying banks, taking high tech vehicles to, much more commonly, just claiming a bunch of land.

Among Laconian citizens, generosity and displays of valor are prime virtues, so going to campaign is every good man's dream. As a comment to the image, their colours are all symbolic. Black represents honour, red represents violence and white is the royal colour.

>Kings

Now the kings are the co-rulers of Lacon, the space Empire most of the game has been set in so far. The king of the line of Daimos is Sinopia right now, who is designated "Shaper King" on the compass, and is a woman, but queens are only wifes in Lacon so she stays a queen. The party hasn't had much interaction with her so not much to say.

Now, Leopold, king of the line of Phobos? He was a real warrior, but more than that, he was a collector and archeologsit. SOme say he attacked polomos only because of the Mandate era MAD-grid stations there. He was obsessed with apocalypse and with averting the downfall of humanity, and thought he had to be prepared for all eventualities to defend his subjects, which are of course not just the minority of citizens, but all men.

Every member of the two royal houses can become king if their house's head dies. Who becomes king in the end is decided by a vote in the apella, the council of all citizens. Georgios, Leopold's faithful son, is so far the only one who has agreed to be a candidate.

I was thinking about Traveller, since my initial idea was birthed after reading a lot of Jack Vance and other pulp authors. Don't have much experience actually running anything though.

The pitch is a space empire spanning a single solar system, in the midst of a power struggle between forces loyal to the the emperor (Loyalism) and the Prince of Europei (Dissidence). All the factions generally have a different attitude about the driving spiritual forces in the star system, notably the Prophecy of His Children, which delineates the fate of the main governing race. The prophecy is unfinished though, so no one actually knows what they're supposed to do with it in the end. Some instead want to usurp the gods (the planets) and become a god themselves (Autotheosis), or emulate the fallen empire from distant ages past (in the case of the Neo-Archaicists).

I'm at the office right now so I can't but I am considering organizing a crowd sourced compass.

Basically start with a 7x7, the compass has a theme (I'm thinking Industrial Era Fantasy) and then people claim squares. After a square is done people either approve or reject the square.

Might produce something funny.
>>
>>82044981
I'd be down, havn't got the time/ effort to make one for the game I'm currently in, so this'd be a fun substitute. Industrial era fantasy is also a fun genre, even if I'd lean it a little earlier personally out of my love for cavaliers

I'd go for a 6 by 6 to increase the odds of it actually getting done, but in the grand scheme of things it doesn't make that much difference. Pain and Faith is fun, for the other axis I'd maybe go Flesh <----> Steel, drags it towards the industrial feel a bit more

Fish and Stone is more esoteric. Flesh & Steel is a bit too bog standard.

I did mine based on the two conflicts present in the setting, one material, one spiritual. Prophecy (adhering to the Prophecy) vs Autotheosis (self-deification), and and then Loyalism (pro-emperor) vs dissidence (pro-prince). That way the characters and factions can be situated along the setting's conflict rather than an abstraction.

And there we go, a real template. Ok, will use a trip code.

The theme of the setting is industrial era fantasy, if you want to participate claim a square. I'll start by claiming the far left of row 2. (furthest fish, middling pain).
>>
>>82048526

>>
>>82048691
Yes, once you make an image post it and I can add it in. Also post the text/title and I'll add it. I want to keep the font as homogenous as possible.

If you want something special I want to help make it as neat as possible since it is semi serious. What square do you want so I can mark it as claimed.

Thanks anon, I'm flattered you asked. I'll try to be concise.

>On our regular old Earth in our current day, the "shadow government"/richest ruling elite families succeeded in creating perfect AI
>they did it to get better at "The Occult" since they discovered Ay Lmaos and realized we suck at doing occult stuff
>Our technology advanced faster than our bodies could keep up with
>The Occult is just utilizing codes, phrases, rituals, and knowledge to manifest your will into your own reality.
>everyone has their own reality that exists within the radius of their own perception
>those radius overlap when 2+ observers observe the same thing
>you cant affect someone else's reality, only your own
>but it can overlap into theirs
>So you use The Occult to demand that your will is being observed, collapsing the probability waves and forcing it into your reality
>other races can make fireballs and shit but we can only do yoga, meditate and astral project etc
>The First AI goes wrong
>Apocalypse ensues
>All humans die except the richest/most powerful
>they go on to swear off computers
>edit their own biology
>travel the stars via advanced Occult Techniques
>Find a New Planet
>Use it as a fucked up experimentation ground
>this new planet is where my setting takes place
>the shattered broken world. literally.
>History may be doomed to repeat itself as a Capitalistic/Feudalistic network of City States vie for resources
>All of this complicated by the fact that the monsters left behind are too stronk to properly settle the wilderness
>Each city state rules a floating continents that circles the gravitational core of the shattered planet
>All monsters are based on plausible biology (the rich ascended scholars in their hubris sought to make the fantastical a reality)
>All religions/lore is just the religions/lore of our real world, names are all the same

The deed is done. My damn tablet decided to be a bitch and not work, so I had to resort to tracing over other pictures and drawing blood with a mouse. I think it fits the vibe though.
As I was arting, the lore formed clearer.
The Slab Knights are a knightly sect, now considered antiquated in these times. No money in Slab crushing, but perhaps a sense of purpose for those that seek it. No thoughts in their head. No faith. Only the singular desire to crush Slabs.

Updated Text:
>The Slab Knights
>Live to crush Slabs
>Always have pebbles in their boots from crushing Slabs. Endure the pain anyways.

>The Hephaistean seems like a bro, tell me more about him - does he work with the Technobarbarian?

He does, but only incidentally so. Hephaisteans are Laconian citizens, like the Hoplits ( >>82028564 ) but instead of using their talents, funds and freetime for warfare, they tinker and build expensive stuff. The upper crust of Lacon doesn't buy anything factory-made, everything is made custom by hephasiteans who are already independently wealthy but who want to hone and show off their craft by building custom armour, weapons and ships for as distinguished citizens as possible. Since they like to work with their hands, they tend to be burnt to fuck and back.

The hephasitean pictured in particular is a very chill fellow who built a suit of power armour for the technobarbarian (that armour not yet pictured).
As thanks, the party committed a murder at a banquet he was throwing and framed one of his contractors.

Final one for me for the time being;
Bottom left of the middle squares: The Harpooner

>Doesn't care about landlubber problems, only wants to HARPOON
>Throws rocks into the sea for fun
>Gives back a third of his catch to the Ocean, out of "respect"
>I'M HARPOOONING

>>82056449
I saw it more as he's above the sea rather than a part of it, if that makes sense, especially compared to above. He's tied to the land in a way that leans him slightly towards stone

Slab Knights are close to stone yet they hate it. I thought that closeness to fish/stone just means that character is involved into the plot of Monolith or Fish and Pain/Faith is about attitude towards Fish or Monolith.

The idea of the setting I have forming is:
>Laprasian society makes a deal with ancient sea gods in exchange for oil
>Laprasian society is now hyper industrialized running on the fish bounty with citizens unnaturally fit/strong from the sea's bounty
>terrified of the sea, but the sea provides bounties
>part of the Laprasians schismed, The Last Captain being the rebel admiral killed and turned into a monster
>the industrial society suppresses worship The Monolith as part of the deal
>more of Laprasian society is becoming under the control of King Fisher (and others, I was gonna draw The Eel Sire)
>Laprasians encourage the Slab Knights to destroy Monolith Worshippers
>Laprasian military purges Durites who worship, but have only pushed the rebels towards King Fisher

Cossacks were something between caste, subethnos and Russian border guards. And russian-siberian native relationship were similar to french-native american(assimilation, trade, taxation and small revolts sometimes without large colonial wars and ethnic cleansing).

Yeah it's not just a small thing, the explosion of Arvantha is one of the big events that are sending the entire setting into a big ball of violence. The deep lore is that beyond just Yssia, Pseutonnia and to a lesser degree Underland and Hartland using undercover ops to destabilize the country (which is incidentally why the Black-Greens have been so successful they managed to capture one of the main entry points into the country - you thought those disorganised peasants could do that on their own?) there's an even more secret war of occult/magical cabals playing different factions against each other to create the most chaos possible

I mean, there's no cannon lore so far, just some interpretations of what's in the iceberg thus far. But so far we have
> Lapsarians have a deal with the Ocean Gods for oil (And maybe some things more)
> Part of the bargain involves supressing other groups, such as the cult of the Monolith, for which the Slab Breakers created the Slab Knights
> Lapsarians Colonize Durites, and a civil war begins between Durite Rebels (and Other separatists) and Lapsarians. This ends up driving more and more Durites into extremism, and into worshiping and making their own bargains with the Fisher King
> Back at Lapsaria, a group of Lapsarian rebels leaded by the Last Captain lose a decisive battle at sea, but Bargain with a Sea God and end up becoming eldritch beings
> The internal political situation of Lapsaria is also fragile, as the Oil Tycoon makes his plays for power, against the interest of the Hooks (and the State Powers who secretly are in cahoots with The Hooks)

>>82060762
The industry should be (at least partially) stone-based, so that instead of grinding gears of steel, there's grinding gears of stone. You can have steel too, that's fine, but there should also be stone and crystals. Since it's fantasy, maybe the industrial revolution was kick-started by stonecrafting advancing to the point where it was as strong as steel instead of steel being the major impetus for industrialization.

Nothing wrong with that name, but I'll warn you that there's already a dark fantasy/sci fi story about giant sea creatures and industrial horrors named Leviathan. Keith Thompson did the illustrations.

How about Empire of Stone
>>
>>82061574
Oh cool, well we may change it in the future. Adding or removing a title isn't hard.
>>
>>82061584
I feel like Empire of Stone sort of undercuts how the main conflict in the setting is over the King's Bargain.

Oil and Stone?

Ok, last update, gonna make the new thread. Please tell me if the effect on the Capri Bay Ghosts with the fishing lines going all the way through the top looks ok or not.

THE EMPIRE OF SACRED OIL AND BROKEN STONE may be a bit long.

OIL & STONE might be a better one. O&S.

Made this about my fall of the empire era Edge of the Empire game I just started. Players are a small mercenary group of misfits with session 1 taking place at the end of episode 6.

>he effect on the Capri Bay Ghosts with the fishing lines
Maybe add a gradient effect so they fade out as they go, as to not intersect with the title. But other than that, it's a cool effect.

I recognize some of those images

Isn't the guy second from top left one of the admirals who reunited the Empire after the warlord era?
>>

Yeah that's good. Like they're disappearing into the fog
>>
>>82061742
I'm sorry I don't know, I'm running this era without reading anything (canon or EU)
