So I feel like the Rogue Stars participated in a battle with the Eradicant and that made them turn traitor. The Angel's Eradicant did something callous, possibly destroying the Stars' homeworld, to route out heresy. With that loss they realized they're destined to die so they set out on a Final March against the Emperor and his angels of death.

We could have all three factions believe in more or less the same ideology to tie them all together, a Reckoning or Judgement Day equivalent, where a powerful entity will return and cleanse the galaxy of its sins. The marines believe G-Man will/has awoken to claim the Golden Throne and purify the nonbelievers. Their guard allies believe the Emperor himself will rise from the Throne and start a new golden age of humanity. And the Chaos followers believe someone else - or maybe even that Emps/Girlyman - will arrive, find humanity wanting, and burn the whole thing to the ground. Essentially the same event, the same beliefs, just differing on who the chosen people will be.

I thought more he WAS possessed by the ruinous powers in that moment, leading up to it, and even after for a time.
But he is at his base nature just a spiteful coward.
That’s what led him to heresy in the first place.
He may in fact be a terrible warlord to contend with, but he is also a degenerative paranoid schizo who has ups and downs and imagines it to be him losing and fighting for the will of the chaos gods.
In fact he’s right: they don’t care about him anymore. He’s done his job.
They never cared about him to begin with, and in truth much of his success was his own, they just gave him a push over the edge to kill the inhumane.

Colonel Astrid 361 Neverborne of the 13th Artillery Regiment.
Astrid has served the imperium with distinction for more than 300 years, the last 200 of which as colonel of the 13th Artillery Regiment.
She wears the colors (icy pale blues & luminous whites) with pride, & is always accompanied by the senior bannermen of her regiment.
She’s seen as the source of the 13th’s motto, “hell never thaws & the Neverborne never die”, as despite her relentless pursuit of perfection in the equally ceaseless dismantlement of the emperors enemies in a sea of long range pinning artillery fire, she has nevertheless been the target of battlefield & encampment assassinations no less then 317 times: all downright laughable in execution. It has risen this vatborn by the designation 361 to spiritual embodiment of what the Iceholm Hailstorms view their Neverborne comrades as: Handcrafted Jewels of Ice in the Emperors Storm of Wrath, & should they fail to lapse as most coldspells are hoped to, they will drown them enemy in a sea of hate so complete & unrelenting, the roiling explosions will seem as immutable & constant as the permafrost held about their persons, now so damningly & confoundedly spread upon the enemy beneath.
For her part personally, Astrid has conceived a slightly softer facade & persona in her actual dealings, though it does little to disarm any who don’t already look away from the walking legend in demure reverence or for fear of catching her eye: it is obvious a heartless pit of cold is the greater part of her actual being.
It is rumored still however, that she remembers every name of each marine that has ever succumbed to the enemy before her on the battlefield, & holds silent remembrances where even the towering berg of her person can be said to melt drop by drop.
A legend which has spread an equally private if rampant practice amongst the rest of the Neverborne as a whole, who have taken up eternal wakes in the name of their fallen Angels of Death.
