What's the best tone and world for a ratman focused setting? Fantasy, Post-Apoc, Sci-Fi, some strange nutritional slurry-mix of all three?
>>
>>76782537
Best tone is erotic, best world is cyberpunk.
>>
>>76782542
>Erotic
Enthusiasm appreciated, but this is a blue board.
>>
>>76782537
Grimdark dieselpunk, and the setting is a couple city blocks of London, England in 1940, one a factory, another a gradually destroyed set of apartments due to the bombings. To reach more of the city would be a gigantic adventure for rat heroes, but I guess it's possible.

Both good choices, I think the key thing is grit and grime. Rats are incredible animals, but there isn't much glitz and glamour in how they survive. Whatever the setting, a high difficulty, and maintaining a sense of survival-against-the-odds is a must.
>>
>tone
Perilous, yet adventurous.
>setting
Mostly reguar world. Tiny mice trying to survive or even thrive through ingenuity, courage, and teamwork, despite being small and weak compared to other creatures.

I'm yet to be convinced anyone on this board plays mouse guard. People talk about it all the time, but I have no evidence that motherfuckers play that game.
>>
>>76783055
It's the rules lite version of Burning Wheel. Most people will play that and look at Mouse Guard's pretty artwork.

Here's some story hooks for a ratty post-apoc campaign.

>A wealthy merchant offers a juicy payday, or vital supplies, for delivering a package that for some reason the official postal service won't touch.
>A shipment of wasteglass, the glittering and valuable remains of the pre-end world baked into great scars on the surface, has gone missing in the midst of some of the worst mutant country in the mapped world. The shipment contains enough to turn any lucky soul who finds it into a very, very wealthy man.
>The Rat King, a powerful weapon requiring multiple pilots all networked together via implants in their tails and spines, has gone rogue. Months after its disappearance, sightings of other rat-kings of crude construction are beginning to be reported on the edges of known civilization, the labs responsible for its construction however denies any involvement.
>The Fieldhands, a group of luddites who claims ratkind must abandon technology or face another end to civilization, have become militant. Bounties have been posted for the heads of any members, who can be identified by tattoos on the back of their necks. A sub-faction of the Fieldhands who abhor violence have come under-attack by zealous bounty-hunters and requests aid.
>Micemen, the horrible, cannibalistic, and frustratingly short cousins of ratkind had the incredible fortune of breaking into a pre-war cache of food and supplies. After their numbers exploded and attacks on nearby settlements grew more and more common, mercenary crews have begun pulling out of the area because of mounting losses. As less and less able-bodied rats stand to fight off the hordes, settlements have grown more and more depserate, offering more and more ludicrous rewards for any aid rendered.

in the first world war rats were said to get larger than cats, some even reaching the size of dogs.
Perhaps if the war had dragged out a few more years we could have gotten a whole new sentient race, born in mud and blood. A race who only know the conflict of the men-folk.
Would they join the war for a pre-existing side or their own? Or would they live as scavengers and night-terrors amongst the trenches?

>Diselpunk hellscape that's slowly killing mankind off for good
>Mania and nationalism has ruined the remaining humans minds, they are doomed to destroy themselves
>Cue a race of intelligent rats, the unwitting heirs to the earth as life refuses to go without an intelligent race, growing up in the trenches, scavenging for supplies and ending up in vicious trench-fights with the paranoid and maddened humans

no one's sure if the rat men are rats turned men or men turned rats. But every tommy and every jerry knows one thing for certain. They're out in no-mans land, watching, waiting.
Grey 'Arry in the next trench over claims he trades bullets with them in return for dog tags they scavenge from the wastes.
A tank broke down when the crew died to a gas attack, but when someone was sent to see about scavenging it they found the engine, a several ton hunk of metal, missing.
Command refuses to acknowledge them, even when photos and corpses begin to show up.
The war goes on.

The rats are learnin'. They wait in the walls, or just underneath the communication rooms, they don't know enough yet to realize there's a whole world out there beyond the war, but they're learning all they can in the meantime. I heard a fellow that was on his way to a field hospital was doped up so thoroughly he couldn't find his own hands just fer claiming he heard 'em trying to figure out what makes a bullet do what it do. I...
I don't much like to think what they'll do if they learn how to make their own bullets. Maybe we'll get lucky and they'll just keep to themselves.
Maybe.

The rat-men are not confined to the western front. At the failed naval landings sailors reported strange scraping noises in their holds.
In the frozen hellscape of the eastern battlefields strange shapes dart amongst the trees and grasses at night.
In the deserts five men must always be set to guard supplies, precious resources in the sands.
On the high seas the crews of the engine rooms rarely show their faces anymore, and there seem to be more than the logs would suggest.
Even in the cities the starving civilian populace has begun to report missing food and stolen machines.

>I-I've heard them! I swear to god and any saint that'll vouch for me. I heard them, singing and playing instruments, the same instruments command says we can't play anymore because it might give away our position! I heard it! The most beautiful songs in their weird, tinny voices! Why don't we give 'em these trenches, they were born from this hell and yet they can still smile and sing! To hell with this war, to hell with this whole damn front! Let the rats have it I say! Wait-no! Don't do this to me! Please! S-sir it's the drink, I didn't mean any of it, please sir no!

John was carried away that night by the commissariat. He wasn't seen by any of the men on that front ever again. And when they heard it, either on the radio on the frequencies that weren't used anymore, or on their watches in the trenches where they swore they could see the lights and swaying figures and the wafting smell of cooking food, they didn't say a word. They just thought of John kicking and screaming as he was dragged away for such seditious behavior.
Some of them wished they had said it first.

>Rat Mothers, sometimes called Breeders, are the only known type of female Skaven, a creature birthed only to be a bloated baby making factory. Each weights at least 700 pounds and measures 10 feet long from snout to tail. Their flabby soft bodies bristle with dozens of protrusions, all of which leak the foul-smelling milk on which their litters are weaned. Partly crippled by their role, these creatures cannot care for themselves and must rely on castrated slaves for survival. They spend most of their time in a euphoric haze brought on by an application of hallucinogens and other drugs
>When adequately fed and attended, the Rat Mother births a litter of 1-10 squalling Ratlings each week, these creatures reaching maturity in 2-3 weeks

A few months back we woke up to find a pilot in our trenches. He had gauze wrappings like he'd been in a field hospital, yet here he was, in a front trench right up against no mans land. Not just gauze either, he had a necklace made of telephone wire, decorated with empty casings. And let me tell you, this man had the most dopey grin on his face. We thought he had gone daffy, but he seemed normal enough. All we could get out of him was that his plane had crashed in no mans land a week earlier and he had just gotten back. As he was led by some officers back to the aerodrome he was humming some sort of tune, not like any I've heard.
On long nights I hear those tunes, joyful and cheery, drifting from the craters.

It was the strangest thing...
A week ago, one of our comms guys got in trouble, the bad kind of trouble that you might not come back from, with the brass. Apparently he had been giving out reports to a 'commander' that wasn't on any of our records, thing was, he got off with just a beating. The reports were just history book stuff. Who invented planes, how they work, what they're used for, how you fly them, really basic stuff you might teach an engineering student or entertain a kid with, nothing tactical.
I ran into the guy and tried to ask who this 'commander' of his was. All he said was that they were "a real stand-up guy, got good taste in music." Then he just turned heel and walked off with a smile, humming this tune. I swear I've heard that tune before somewhere...

>>
>>76787635
It's kind of beautiful. Something impossible is happening in those trenches. The rats are learning, but they're not learning to kill people, even though their world is incredibly dangerous. They're learning for the sake of it, something so pure and good that these soldiers, members of a (potentially) doomed humanity who have presumably been fighting for generations, still can understand the value in what those rodents are doing.

>>
>>76788215

If the folks are already dead there ain't much point in letting them go to waste. Alive men-folk should be kept that way however, better for everyone.
As for culture we've seen they have a love for music and machinery, and that they're not generally hostile. I like that military-themed idea, you'd only be able to get military clothing out on the field, but they don't know which parts go with which uniforms exactly.
I bet that they'd try disguising themselves to get a better look at trench-life up close, like pic related.

"You look like you've seen a ghost kid. What? You saw a rat? Of course you did, they live down here too. Yes yes, I know it was a big one. Would you calm down? Everyone knows they're that big. They've been there for years. Yes. The rumours of the rat-men are true, and no, we will NOT be telling high-command, and if you run off and radio them, you will never see home again, you get me? Good. They started showing up when the men in the engine room, god rest their souls, started getting sick. But even as they started passing the engines kept truckin' on. Nobody could figure it out, but nobody wanted to look a gift horse in the mouth. The old-timers, yes, older then me, reckon that the engineers were teaching the rats all they could before the sickness took 'em, and after several missions where we technically didn't have an engine crew and we still kept going, the captain left a box of medals, a few schematic books, and a bottle of expensive whiskey he had been saving. We thank 'em how we can, and you will too if you got any decency in you."

Sorry in late to this anon. To answer your question, sweetpea loves scratches when she's in her cage. When she's out her cage, she barely sits still, and just runs around investigating everything until she gets tired lol. They're very neat, no shutting in food bowls as we trained then early on to shit in their toilet (you just put any poos you can find in one location for a few days and from then on they always shit there due to the smell. They're generally very clean and hygienic animals, and spend up to 1/3 of their waking time grooming!

Didn't XIV change the Viera, a race just a little bit more unique than humans with bunny ears (not knocking them), to have normal hands and feet unless you wear class-exclusive gear? XIV will never add a distinctly non-human race because they'd have to make new models for every piece of gear in the game, or so I'm told by friends who play it.

The bodies there are human. They may need to create new models for some of the helmets, but the rest of the gear I imagine would work as is by just scaling them like they do for the other races. Burmecians you'd need to alter all the leg/feet gear, likely some items in the other slots. I'm sure it could be done but it seems like Squeenix doesn't want to expend the extra effort for something like that.

welcome. something about it. I wouldnt quite say comfy, though the feeling is tangential, It just has this great classic feel to it. Its not completely caked in mud and wear and mad max stuff, like she just crawled out of some 20 hour fight that some people tend to go a bit far on, but its just the right amount of banged up and world weathered too while still being cared for. Just the right amount of drab and colorful too, the green blue brown and some nice red highlights compositionally. feels warm. also, just like the design and propotions too.

Not to mention my prefered amount of detail, stuff like the crank on the crossbow and the hilt construction of the sword, and the rest of the outfit and design, while not being distractingly over detailed.

Just hits that sweet golden medium for me in pretty much every aspect. Realy enjoy.

yah I noiced that too, its really neat. Its a novel diy thing that just seems like good flavor, like 'nam soldier with bullets in their helmet strap. just a nice touch.

Not sure what that black rod thing going into the ground is tho.

Im no artist, but stylistically, this is kinda my jam. any more cartoony and it tends to loose some of the active cool factor (something I think that Darkest dungeons just barely crosses with their slightly chibi look), while it still retains a good amount if the exaggeration that more cartoony designs are great at utilizing.
>>
IX has a great cast as a whole. But I always loved Freya the most. Steiner and Vivi are close, though.
>>
>>76797367
The black pole in the ground is the flag's bottom half, and their early work and a few of the newer ones are a bit chibi looking, but none of them have color
>>
>>76797436
>The black pole in the ground is the flag's bottom half
im retarded.
I was looking in another tab and I could only see like half of the image at once.

idk if chibi is the exact work im looking for. I dont mind this, but there is some vague uncanny valley line between overly cartoony and with too big of a head that kind of turns me a bit off. This is definitely still in the i like spectrum though.

Would like to see this artists take on the boss from mgs3, this seems up their ally stylistically. would also love to see her in the artists style, weither ratified or human.

What is a better series to read - Mouse guard or Redwall?
What would you recommend to read if I like rats more? Does some of the series above feature non evil rat characters?
>>
>>76799500
Mouseguard doesn't have rats but will take absolutely no time to burn through all the books, if you want my recommendation the Winter book and Blackaxe are easily the best in the series
When it comes to Redwall, there's maybe a singular case of a good rat. I forgot which book but I don't want to say much in case of spoilers.
But honestly the rats in Redwall are great, they're all stupidly evil and backstabby, very skaveny so unless that's a turnoff I'd reccomend reading just Mossflower and Redwall, the rest are samey but if you're desperate for more you should move onto Luke the Bellmaker

Now it's even more confusing. Is the cut between the lines of paint, because that's where the absorbent part of the band-aid is? If it's where the blood is, then she basically put the glue part of the band-aid over the wound. It almost looks like the bottom line is smudged with blood, like she drew it with a bloody finger, since the blood does not extend beyond the green bits. How is the band-aid even sticking so good if applied over the face paint? I recall those being rather greasy.

Given that it's fur, it's *possible* that the actual absorbent part of the bandaid is over the wound, but the fur beneath it, where blood would go cuz gravity, is stained with said blood, and that her fingers got bloody when applying the band-aid so there's blood smeared on the top portion.
Maybe.

Is it weird to think that Ratfolk would have less of a concept of diseases since they are naturally immune to most of them?

You'd have one that is perfectly civil and polite, wants to interact with human society but keeps forgetting to clean regularly since it's not the same issue for them as us.
>>
>>76803595
My understanding is that rats are actually very clean and spend a lot of their time grooming themselves. I could be wrong, but I imagine they'd be quite able to fit in high society in terms of individual image and cleanliness.
>>
>>76794945

>>
>>76803661
While that may be true, fantasy lives off stereotypes.
>>
>>76803438
>>
>>76803691
I could see both being a thing. There could be the high society types that have better access to soaps and bath houses while the lower class have to do more filthy jobs that cause them to get that "filthy rat" thing going on. Despite their filthy work they at least try to keep their hands clean or something.
>>
>>76803595
>>76803661
>>76803691
I mean... they CAN be clean. But sometimes thats somewhat overstated. Even an animal that cleans themselves (most do) can be situationally "dirty". They still enter and are pests in human society, kind of poop everywhere, and naw on food and item, and can carry flees and diseases.
Its not entirely stereotyping. Both aspects of grooming and being kind of pests and hygene hazards have some truth to them.
>>
>>76803783
Unless they are sick/dying the hands would most likely always be cleaned at the very least. Theres no fur on them and they lick the fingers to groom hard to reach sections when they arent doing weird spine breaking body twists for it

They can always retcon it or handwave it off for Tooth and Tail 2. Not that I ever expect that to happen, sadly. While the setting/game still has plenty to offer and expand upon, I'm not sure they'll ever go back to it, or atleast not until they make Monaco 2 which I also dont see happening.

Think the last update I saw from the devs was some survival game in its very early stages and that was forever ago. Big problem with making a new one is that it requires the original artist and musician to produce the same effect as the first game.

You could do a game as the trench rats. Have it so the players can gain influence and guide their developing society towards cooperation with the humans, conflict with the humans or just avoid/hide from the humans.

That way you can play it as diplomatic, stealth, or full murder hobo
>>
>>76815429
Of course you COULD do a campaign as the trench rats, there's a lot of fun to be had there. But there's a certain mystique about playing as a soldier on a front where the once silly-seeming rumours of supernatural phenomenon suddenly become uncomfortably plausible. Which rumours are true? Are the rats really whispering conspiracy or are they just trying to get by like everyone else? Do the craters in no-mans-land REALLY belong to corpses bloated with rainwater who want nothing more to drag you down? Were those shapes in the smoke you saw really biplane-hunting drakes? It could all be bullshit, fantasies spawned from strained and breaking minds.
Then again, it could all be true.

Who here wants nothing more then to explore an industrial cityscape filled with the technology of settings like dishonored or frostpunk?
Rats make a fantastic population for such a timeframe.
>>
>>76815663
Ah so going almost full weird war but leaving it to the players to figure out what's what
>>
>>76815690
Bingo. The rats are the most likely *real* thing. And could take the form of impartial merchants when you discover that yeah, they're very real. Sadly, the 'bank notes' (do the rats actually have a king??? His portraits on the note...) the rats want to pay you in aren't accepted anywhere else.
>>
>>76815681
dunno dishonored always seemed really ugly and unappealing to me
>>
>>76814929
For what it's worth, you inspired me to do a Dieselpunk/Dark Fantasy setting based on the idea that when the first World War breaks out, it causes magic to start flooding back into the world, and the more humanity keeps poking at magic's manifestations (and killing each other on a grand scale), the more heavily inundated the planet is getting, so they're literally "terrorforming" the world into something that will be completely unrecognizable to the world before the War.

Which is only a bad thing if you insist on playing the world like a bunch of 40K rejects.

Some animals sweat through their feet, some have weird anatomy I.E hooved creatures probably shouldnt wear any, rats have some weird looking feet and stuffing them into a human pair of boots isnt going to work too good.

I prefer footwraps and other partially footwear that lets the weird toe splay they have stay free but covers the rest of the foot and ankle area

The highest I hit before they reset everything was Firebrand, after that I just never managed to find the time to play it again, and I was never too good at RTS games despite liking them and playing multiplayer. If it was some crazy 4vs4 mode on a giant map I think I'd of been able to dump so many more hours into it

Neat thing about the game is that you can freely edit the faction hex colors as much as you want, as well as mod in new sprites which also retain said hex color alters. Quartermaster had a skaven chieftain skin and Archimedes had a grey seer one as well and both were pretty damn good looking. Think they made skinks and saurus with the lizards too, on top of the generous amount of different sprites for all the units in game minus the structures.

Yes. I am aware that good localization exists, that wasn't the point of the post: what I've written is a literal quote from the comicbook itself, Brakko says that when the rat goes to america.

Now, here's your (You) Mr.Sperg who flames people on the 4channel for such retard reasons, do you really crave feeling smarter than others that much?

You said that coom is from the "heart" instead of the "head", so you implied that what isn't coom is a product of cold planning with no "heart".

You fools, coom comes from the knees, everyone knows that. Back of the knees, even!
>>
>>76821792
No, I implied that the quick sketch was done without too much thinking about it, so it came from the "heart" while a bigger, more elaborate piece requires time and talent, meaning you need your "head" to do it. And getting all the poses and colours right, the detail down, etc. might actually redact from the charm of a simple fun sketch.
