8e changelog, in brief: >>76006365 (Dead)

Distant Broken Stars is an expansive universe created by Tableforge. Its centerpiece is a dynamic fleet-action miniatures wargame sharing the same name.
It also isn't real. Welcome to thread 9 or 10 in the same /tg/ discusses a game that doesn't exist thread chain.
Except it sort of does exist now. Links to rules draft and a pastebin where you can find more info below.

Thread Question:
Which faction gets the best fan art?
>>
Did we ever came up with the central lore of this thing? We have some loose lore of the factions but little stuff on the setting as a whole.
>>
>>76580802
I believe there was something about there being a single Human Empire that eventually fragmented into several human factions. So that's probably a good start.

I made this to show off elsewhere but didn't want to keep spamming my shit in the prior thread. So here it is now.

Have lost some impetus with the holidays, but I've still got ideas for new ships to work with. Tyar cruiser next maybe.

Also, a quick show of hands, is there a preference between the old and new Tyar designs? I prefer the new one (obvs.) but I'm interested to hear if the old had any proponents.
>>
>>76582428
What did the old Tyar design look like? Whatever it should be, I feel they should rock an absolutely authoritarian aesthetic.

New (left) and Old (Right)
Really there's no reason both can't exist as subfaction aesthetics. I'm just focusing on models based on the left one. I didn't originally care for the righthand design as much, but it's grown on me some.
>>
>>76582983
Yeah, I dig the left. Lemme just throw up a strawpoll.

I'm really annoyed with the big flat spaces I keep ending up with on Tyar ships but don't want to greeble them normally. Opinions on this eagle? It's kinda jank but the best I can manage at scale. I'll just leave it off 'em if you guys think it looks worse with.
>>
>>76584108
You can leave it off.
>>
>>76585077
S'what I figured. I'm largely fishing for some more prominent interest items to stick on their heavy cruisers and up.
That said, might have a few sudden ideas.
>>
>>76581035
I also forgot. Was it set in the Andromeda galaxy or the Milky way?
>>
>>76587830
Milky Way, the Andromeda Galaxy is relevant for the Andromedans, but it's not clear whether there's the Andromedan Emprie still there or i it exists at all anymore.

>>76581035
It's a bit of a mess, really, we had the "humankind tries to escape the Sun going supernova, there's an organizational mess so multiple nations and interests send spaceships out on their own, an unspecified amount of centuries later, the current human factions start to form on the background of other younger races going into space as well", "there's a human empire as old as the Heritage that has fone 'poof' and cannot be found anymore" and "this is humanity's first foray into the galactic community, and it's a shitshow".

I think the Tyar are the very first Human colonies, part of the first wave of U.N. approved colonization after the calamity that enveloped the Sun, with the Planetborn being a breakaway after the first extrasolar colonies were founded.
>Early 22nd Century the Colony Ship U.N.S Discovery utilizes Warp Transit Point (WTP) technology bringing the first representatives of the Central Colonial Government to the Alpha Centauri system soon establishing the colony of Novw Terra.
>The Sun has been discovered to be radiating more and more massive amounts of radiation into the Solar System and within a few centuries Earth looks like it will be rendered uninhabitable for human life. This sparks a mass colonization effort ultimately resulting in the development of WTP technology under U.N control.
>Nova Terra is the first of many worlds settled by the CCG and intially all colonization is handled by the body which slowly resettles human populations among the stars, with the most rich and influential given first seats among the colony vessels, it just so happens that many of these people are members of the Neo-Humanist movement of Alexander Novy.
>Late 23rd Century religious fanaticism and dissatisfaction with the Central Government leads the United Faith Council to launch their own colonization effort and they go far beyond the CCGs reach, this is the beginning of the Planetborn.
>The CCG clamps down on it's populations and rapidly strips itself of democratic principles. In response the independent nations of Earth, desperate to leave the dying planet, develop their own WTP transportation and rebel against the central government. The CCG launches a bloody war effort to reclaim them and bring them all under their control. This leads to civil war as the Transhumanists of all factions rise up and war upon each other and the population. With the Tyar rising from the ashes.

How can we add to this?

Trying some shit out for Tyar CA.
Those front turrets will probably go, but not sure what to put there or how to texture it if nothing.
Everyone loves casemates.
The missile cells are stolen from the Planetborn ship but eh. Not a lot of ways to make VLS hatches.
That new turret is going on here somewhere, just not sure where yet.
>>
>>76585786
Point defense weapons of some sort? Or maybe shield batteries, something like that?

Alternatively, sloped armor, or some sort of hardened mesh surface? Say it pops torpedoes, or diffuses plasma or lasers, it at least would add some texture.
>>
>>76589445
PD is what's there, yeah. Some sort of shield emitter dome could be rad too. It should add to the 'space zeppelin' aesthetic as well. I'll give it a try.

Lacking much in the way of existing names, think I'mma call the Tyar CA Rightous Victory.
The frigates can be Selfless Courage-class. As a small nod to the fact that frigate crews are boned.
>>
>>76590660
There a lore reason for being two word class names? Why not just, say, Victory and Courage classes?
>>

>>
>>76590375
I'd say during just to add to the chaos. Have the Zeckir be an experiment by Central Gov that sort of just got forgotten. Perhaps that could work for the Nova as well; their colonies were part of an experiment to build a Human hive and to breed a population that Is completely subservient to their masters...which didn't really work out to well but when the CCG fell apart and in the chaos of civil war that followed the Nova actually developed into a separate polity. And just multiply all of that chaos by a few centuries and you get all of these wildly different factions and ideologies. Perhaps the human voyage to Andromeda could be a secret colonization effort gone wrong? Perhaps they did something that triggered the destruction of Andromeda, my wholly original idea is to have the Stars themselves be sentient and perhaps they could be Heritage.
>>
>>76591250
Not specifically, but it was brought up in a prior thread that their naming schemes would be 'as pompous as possible,' and I felt that a single such word didn't really give the right feel. A few similar names were bandied about, though they were for singular vessels.
>>
>>76591935
Well the setting is called distant BROKEN stars so it might work. But not all stars. Maybe a few of them have abnormalous properties like being green (physically imposible under normal circumstances). Secret Birch worlds in a way.

Also, iirc the Zeckir originated as human colonies who got The Mind's signal to join it, so it might be a different thing altogether.
So the timeline becomes:
>Earth about to get fried
>Alpha Centauri colonized
>CCG colonizes loadsa other worlds
>Religious dissent splinters into UFC colonizing their own planets
>CCG slowly turns draconian
>Humanity civil war started by transhumanists
>The Mind contacted some colonies, some agreed, some don't
>Fringe areas become lawless frontiers
>Some colonies took refuge with xenos
>Tyar rises from the ashes of the civil war
>Independent colonies react, former UFC ones allying and becoming Planetborn
>Xeno-adjacent ones become Absolute States
>Those who accept The Mind becomes Zeckir
>Lawless frontier produces Blue Destiny and Emerald Nova
>First Contact with the other major xenos?

Well what other Precursor races could we fit in?

I do like the idea of having an ancient Proto-Ashen Empire. Like have those fuckers be a hyper advanced race that tried to encode their very beings onto nano machines so they could live forever (the nano machines acting as artificial cells for their bodies that would constantly replenish themselves) that went horribly wrong driving them insane.

I thought about having a singular angelic character show up in the Avar backstory. Like something that showed up, saw suffering deformed bird people, and then just wrecked the oppressors and reformed the Avar into what they are. Some anon said something as a joke about a traveler king the Avar worship so why not have some extragalactic monks that the Avar worship? In addition to ancestor worship, of course. Can't have a "muh honor" trope without the accompanying "muh ancestors" trope.
>>
>>76591526
Why stick to only English? The Tyar, being the oldest colonies of Earth, would probably still have large chunks of knowledge about it's history left. And potentially they would have multiple different languages, so you could end up with Latin themed classes like the Vae Victus and Canus Rex among all number of different languages.
>>
>>76599151
Well the Traveling King has two different meanings, he's some kind of semi-historical "ancient" king that has long been disgraced that has come back on several occasions as an omen. He can either mean destruction for the races of Patonia or he could arrive to save it.

At least that's what I got from the Lords of the Avarati RPG expansion.

I humbly request that Avar ships be themed around the Royal Navy of centuries past. So have Galleons, and Frigates be cruiser equivalents but have Avar tactics all revolve around wedge formations rather than battle lines, that way Avar fleets can use wing mounted weapons to frontally break enemy battle lines. Avar fleets should function much like medieval and classical cavalry in that sense that they are armored extremely heavily on the front to protect them as they "charge" towards enemy ships using close range to bring their weaponry to best effect, then they break on or through the enemy ships to move back into wedge formation to launch their attack all over again. A head on charge and engagement at close range should be a suitably samurai like tactic to fit their theme.

I disagree. Putting everything on one ancient alien race is boring and been done before.
Also I had an idea earlier on something we could do to make the ashen more interesting, as well as give them some motivation for what they're doing. What if we make them more like an inorganic version of the flood from halo?
>>
>>76605902
That actually might work. Like they would be able to digitize people and subsume them into their hivemind? I think that could potentially work for them but then what would the Ashen Monarch be? It would be hard to have any sort of characters if we went that route.
>>
>>76606104
Make the monarchs be equivalent to grave minds. Have everyone who's conscious get taken be basically logic plague'd until they can only see the Ashen as the best way to be.
>>
>>76605902
I would ask the question about what were the relations between the Ashen and Heritage. Were they friends or enemies?

>>76606104
To our knowlege there only exists one Ashen Monarch. And he might be the only Ashen who was "born" as an ashen. While other Ashen were subsumed into the race aferwards. Also they aren't a hivemind. They have a well defined but adaptible caste/rank system tho. You still can be an individual and raise through the ranks. In some cases you might still have your previous memories in tact.

>>
>>76607171
So do they absorb other species into the Ashen or do they exist just to kill? It seems like they just want to murder people especially from all the lore we've had about the Ashen March through the Nova Worlds.
>>
>>76615880
If someone seperated your consciousness from your memories, would it kill you?
>>
>>76615880
I feel like we need to have an honest discussion on what exactly we want the ashen to be. We just need to figure out what works and what doesn't. The ashen can be something really interesting or they can be super derivative. This can go for any faction, really. DBS has just enough fluff to define the factions, but they need characterization to fully flesh them out. That and a defined set of rules. Props to the rulefags for giving us what we got so far.
>>
File: Dreadnaught3.jpg (7 KB, 340x191)
7 KB
7 KB JPG
>>76618057
Well what would be non derivative? I think some kind of nano machine hive mind that's got insane might be pretty good. Have the Ashen Monarch be the only sane member of the species who wants to absorb the knowledge of other races to help save his people from their madness.

I think that might be a decent idea but honestly we just need to figure them out.
>>
>>76618057
>>76620120
The issue here seems to be that the Ashen have a defined aesthetic and concept before they have a coherent reason to be so.

Have them be the result of a Gray Goo Scenario happening on a single planet doesn't cut it because it would be ill-fitting for a war game and cause a host of issues on how one could stop it if it figured out space travel.

Them deriving from another race could be uninspired, nonsensical, or both.

Adding a precursor race specifically to justify them feels incredibly derivative (though I may be a bit biased against the idea of "unreachable Precursors" to begin with).

So, any way you slice it, it's not an easy faction to integrate in the lore. The original proposer of them could just decide for us all, but then he should've tripfagged on the basis it was gonna be useful.

Straw poll time?
>>
>>76621252
Well, let's take a moment to see what the defining traits for the Ashen are.
>nanite-based being
>ancient enough to predate most of the other factions (except maybe Necroseers, Ppuks, Andromedans and Heritage)

Way I see it, I like the idea where the Ashen were initially made of natural volcano-based nanites, which were then researched by a now-extinct civilization of minor xenos living on the planet, and utilized as an immortality serum/info network. But then massive global war happened, and the nanites get weaponized, leading to a limited grey goo/mind scrambler scenario that made the xenos, which haven't gotten spaceflight yet, extinct. Eons later, one of our newer factions' explorers arrived on the same planet and reactivated the nanites, which by then were 'bound' to the scrambled minds. This is why the Ashen does not act like a typical grey goo scenario, they're more akin to a personal, distributed hell made manifest. They are the victim and the perpetrator, and they keep on perpetrating and reliving all their battles.
They're more like an army of angry, confused ww2 ghosts which got in a blender and forgot who was who.

>Suns = Heritage??

Something similar to this was brought up in the last thread.

>>76447262
>>76448722

It makes you wonder at why, if they're still around, they don't interact more directly with the Ppuk. Then you realize that to a sun-sized giga-consciousness, the Ppuk are like rust.

Alternatively, here's a conspiracy theory that the Heritage are from the far future:

Meanwhile, Andromedans looking at their homes in the Andromeda galaxy
>the stars aren't right
>THE STARS AREN'T RIGHT
>>
>>76622220
Yeah that sounds right.
>Ash is naturally created on certain planets thanks to volcanism
>Ash is used in technology by an ancient civilization including weaponry
>The Ashen become a thing when their weapon subsumes the original population into itself
>The Ashen go dornmant for a long time
>The Emerald Nova colonises the planet on which all of this happened
>After some time the Nova awakens the Ashen
>The Ashen destroy the colony and subsume the population
>Afterwards the Ashen escape into space and form the modern day Ashen Fleets

Someone organise this and add it to the 1d4chan page
>>
>>76626590
Well, more like eating Heritage's legacy. Which works just as well with them apparently losing stars in Andromeda.
>>
>>76627481
Alright, that lore is all well and good, but we still don't have a good enough reason for why they need to kill people, steal their memories, and force them into being ashen. I still think my techno-flood idea is the best explanation for why they need consciousness. But I'm open to any and all ideas.
>>
>>76588240
>humankind tries to escape the Sun going supernova,
I've always felt a little weird about that idea. Sure it's cool (having a distant broken star be a central part of humanity's background is pretty fun) ,but I feel like it makes things more complicated than they need to be. I mean, if you make it so that the calamity happens after humanity has developed a bit of an interstellar nation, and also that it's a complete surprise (which doesn't really work with the distant supernova idea, but I feel like u could add a little mystery to it that way), I feel like you kinda have a better excuse for why things start diverging so significantly. The Fall of Rome style background might feel a little cliched, but it can still be done well. But that's just my opinion on the whole thing
>>
>>76631098
That's part of their initial grey goo programming, albeit corrupted not to just goo everyone. Them being psychovores might be a side effect that they capitalize on. Basically yeah, they're nanite Gravemind with a different kind of gestalt consciousness.
Whereas Gravemind is one mind in a million bodies, Ashen is more a million minds went into a blender and the resulting slurry poured into a million bodies. Some of those minds want to look for a cure, some of those minds are militant zealots, some of those minds are suicidal.
>>
>>76631692
Rogue gas giant maybe? Ice instead of fire.
>>
>>76631692
You can keep it as a motivating factor, but also use it as a pleb filter for people who overlook all the socio-economic issues that were occurring at the time.

You have Nihal Hernandez Sorensen rising to power, really pushing for the United Humanity front, but also seeding the many groups that would come from Humanity by his policies.

I know some *religious* posters have frequently brought up the injustices he’s committed and compared it to stuff in the real world, which while learning about them is cool and all, the bits and pieces we get about living in them isn’t all peachy-keen.
>>
>>76631098
I mean, do they need to need to do it? I feel like it kinda makes the Ashen a little more evil if it's just something they CAN do rather than have to. Making it a military tactic rather than a necessity gives them a bit more personality I think.
>>
>>76634812
I was thinking maybe an old heritage superweapon was to blame. Like, there's this thing in orbit around earth's sun that people have been reverse engineering tech from for decades, and eventually they can do no more without taking it to bits, but in the process it blows up or something and takes out SOL. It's less just random chance that way and is instead the consequence of someone's actions, but sheer luck might fit better depending on the story people want DBS to tell.
>>
>>76637276
What if Sol was supposed to be turned into a Hollow Sun, but due to humans messing the device up it just accelerated Sol's aging?
>>
>>76637329
I like that, simultaneously explains how hollow suns are created, and makes Sol's fate more than just random chance. The question is I think, how many people know about it? Like is it public knowledge that this happened, or is it a secret kept by faction governments? Or does no one know, and the fate of sol has been lost to time?
>>
>>76638409
Maybe initially people were informed that the sun's about to blow up due to an anomaly, but they don't know that said anomaly is a Heritage probe that got diddled by shadow government spooks/unknowing scientists. So the majority of the exodus only knew that something strange's been messing with the sun and got them evicted. Rumor has it some Planetborn Hussari historians know the truth.

Now that I think about it, the Voidborn could be among the oldest races in the galaxy, solely thanks to Time Dilation. I know the Mesekai are hedonistic frog people and the mresh are a confederation of miscellaneous beastfolk, but I can't remember much else about either. I feel like the mesekai should have a caste system though. It'd fit the style I think, and be good to see that in a species that isn't an insectoid hive mind
>>
>>76641821
Well what do we have for the Concordant? We know that two of the races are the Oh'Shan and Squib and they have a broken machine god and they use moon sized nodes to expand it's influence. How can we flesh out?

Actually, on that point, I've had a thought. How do male Verdabt develop? Are they always just trees or do they start out as female drones, later develop into sexless ships, and eventually land to finish their transformation into a grown male
>>

We have mentioned Verdant females as individuals that can think, so the idea they're drones is right out.

Chances are the males and females are very much alike, in that once a female Verdant has taken in some sperm from the dedicated branch of the chosen male tree, she fertlizes herself with it and plants it.

The way I see it:
If it develops as female, the resulting shrub will have at its centre a much more throbbing cocoon. If it's male, the cocoon will be smaller and less active. Once the gestation period is up, both sexes will be mobile (though the males will be much slower), they will get taught in the ways of their civilization.

Males get to choose the spot they'd like to start off their ever-growing forest, choosing their job path in matters regarding things like science or the arts or what would be politics otherwise; more "menial" and "direct" labour is left to females, and they can move (though some older Verdant females are known to put in literal roots in places they particularily like, and some males exhibit a mutation that gives them limited mobility well into their first century of life).

Males are very rare, females are abundant, and if needed real quickly they can be created from just planting an unfertilized female Verdant seed, though the resulting individual will be sterile and somewhat mentally unstable.

So how do we want to summarize the lore for 1d4chan?

Probably

I can see them developing a caste system arround this.

That I like. I can kinda see the Verdant doing that in really bad times, when they're just in need of a little more brain power. I can also see the "normal" males being kinda dicks to them, even if it's just because they see sterile males as reminders of bad times.

Thoughts on the absolute states
>1: most of the original members were either aided or flat out uplifted by the States' human component during a series of wars against Thukker Raiders.

>2: The Thukker are kinda the States' bogeymen, hated and feared by the people of the States.

>3: the autonomy of each state is surprisingly high. Sure they're mostly authoritarian in nature, but they dont have that many rules they need to follow as countries. The main ones are contribute to the AS military, don't fight each other, certain anti trans humanist stuff, and, weirdly a non interference policy when it comes to Heritage artifacts.

I think it should have a more knightly aesthetic, with prows and elements inspired by irl knighly armors and helmets, probably similar to the EVE Online Amarr or and the 40k Imperial prow, what with them being something like a bad case of ancap evolving into space cyberpunk neofeudalism that seems to be really schizo HRE type of deal.

From what it was talked in older threads the Tyar empire seems less of a centralized state with absolute imperial authority and more of a hodgepodge of trans and posthuman dynastic families that the emperor has to play cat herder to get moving into a vaguely general direction, with the only thing that seems to have the Tyar unanimously in agreement is that the Concordat Moons should get fucked, and that no AI* (or filth xenos) should be let to surpass in intellect upgraded humans.

*Having your own upload be the blueprint of something like a HALO smart AI and then using it as a Supreme Comander Cybran Simbiont AI implant >may< be tolerable, provided you can do it without other rival noble dynasties not nuking you and everything supporting you into oblivion and then nuking and glassing it again just to be sure.

I am interested in this. Especially at the low level. Knightly Tyar traveling noble adventurers, fighting for fame, glory and honor.
PnP RPG is imho a lot more easily finished than fleet game. just need lore and ruleset, not necessarily models.

I could see the bigger ships being dressed to the nines, covered from bow to tern in family emblems and gold, but im not sure that'd be the case with the smaller stuff. Afterall, can't let anyone know that a scion of house Buggerywatsitt is captain of a simple destroyer.

I mean, it is, in a way, but rules still require quite a bit of time to be developed. Also, the way we've developed things, I feel a lot of interesting situations would be barred.

Which sounds about right. Though presumably DOES have some more powers. Just not enough to be the cohesive whole it would need to be to finally unite the rest of humanity (and definitely not enough to try and end the Swarm/Volrani before they leave nothing behind).

Well, it'd apply for a bit of both. The idea of a mentally-unstable Forest going bersek together with a bunch of females ready to fight for him sounds rad to me.

Well, not too weird, when poor handling can cause picrel real easy.

Yeah, it's probably a kinda Westeros situation where there's a bunch of different noble families and the emperor only has any power because a bunch of the families support him.
