Implicitly defective Ossmodula
Implicitly enhanced Progenoids:
They have the lowest gene-seed rejection rate, which enabled them to replenish their huge number of casualties with an even higher number of recruits.
Minor Ossmodula mutation sometimes causes limbs to twist and deform as the marine grows really old (we're talking hundreds of years to millennia) - this is usually dealt with by replacing limbs with bionics, or cutting them off and placing the cripple into a Dreadnought, Helbrute, or some weird custom made dreadnought-esque walker, since due to their specialty and organization only high-ranking officers can survive for so long, and they surely ain't going to suffer from the "Crazed" rule.
Below average resistance rate to Bionics.

> It is whispered that the advanced systems of the Redemptor are a curse as well as a blessing. The Mechanicum Tech-Priests that first built these walking machines of destruction spared little thought to the health of the incumbent, seeing him as little more than another part to be interred or replaced as necessary. Many of those Redemptors that have fought for a sustained period have already had their sarcophagi replaced, their original pilots burned out by the intensity of the machine’s destructive prowess.[4]

>Sometimes though the Dreadnoughts surging energies leech the occupant’s life force until he is reduced to nothing but a sac of blackened organs, fit only to be reinterred, this time in a true mausoleum dedicated to his selfless sacrifice.

Looking at this I guess we could have something similar to Imperial knights that leave the personalities and knowledge of the ancients stored within the dreadnoughts chassis. Honestly, 'the Thyreophora' sounds like kind of a sick name. Sounds Greek-ish, which relates back to their origins as Iron Warriors. Maybe they could have a special unit in their chapter - not!Breachers, maybe? - that have that name as a special designation? Also relates back to the names of the Iron Warrior's other specialist organizations, like the Stor-Bezashk.

>Ranged Combat

>Genestealer Enemies

The chapter are breachers, used to fighting in tight quarters where a melee charge down a corridor would be fatal - such as infested hab blocks in hive cities where a Genestealer cult has had time to fortify with gun emplacements, or in the confines of a traitorous voidship. Shields play a heavy focus in their doctrine alongside their firepower, utilising shotguns and heavier bolt pistols, as well as the usual fare of bolters, meltas and flamers. Shields are dutifully inscribed with records and accounts of their fallen brothers, representing one final bulwark against the enemies of Man that every marine must eventually join.
>>
>>75929516
sounds good
>>
>>75929516
Them having IW geneseed would make sense with this kind of tactic as well, since it'd allow them to replace their losses extremely quickly from what is surely a very high turnover rate.

I think the chapter specializing in general close-quaters combat, of the stabby and shooty varieties, should be their main 'niche'. Whether, like you say, it's urban warfare against insurgents or space-borne boarding operations. Maybe they sometimes come aboard Navy ships to act as a counter-boarding force? A chapter specializing in being hardcore, balls-to-the-wall Breachers sounds awesome, and that kind of dirty CQC fighting is still adjacent to siege warfare while not being too on the nose.
>>
>>75929516
>>75923547
It should be noted that what the Ossmodula does is grow bone (bones laced with ceramite no less). Which means as they age, these space marines literally harden, their bones calcifying and leaving them immobile (unless surgically repaired or removed for cyber limbs). You could also have calcified lumps appearing on their skins, like Trolls from Shadowrun.

Amateur writegatry inbound!

Arteus gripped his shield harder as the impacts of multilas turret began to scorch the bronze linings of the shield's previous bearers' names.
Arteus held no illusions about his eventual fate, but he wasn't afraid to face it, for even in death as in life he will be there for his brothers, always ahead, ready to take the first blow, and to push on. His name and memory forever memorized and added next to chapter's ancients, watching over his brothers just as always.

Really short, but I don't know how to fit in that they're pushing through a ship's corridor while the Las turret is firing at them down from the other side.
>>
>>75930747
neat
>>
>>75929643
Glad we're in agreement then. Space Marines kicking doors right off their hinges, acting as 'real' space marines on ship actions, and generally being nightmares in tight quarters is a fun style to work with I think.

For culture then, there's some obvious inspiration to work from. Greeks and Persians have been mentioned in the thread, with Hoplites and Immortals being their heavy infantry to draw from - both being easy to adapt straight onto the chapter, and both having a signature shield as well. I'm not a fan of just ripping ancient cultures 1:1, so I'd probably just take some pieces and try to make something original with them if either are the inspiration-to-be.

Yooooooo, love that manga. Came to read because it's based on my people and stayed for the comfy feelings, awesome art and them textiles.
>>
>>75933257
I'm 100% behind textile porn marines with Persian and Central Asian themes. Have it as something on top of the power armour, sort of like how you see Space Wolves, Salamanders and Black Templars do it. Or in a more utilitarian role to cover cybernetic limbs in particular, so shield them for instance against the sand. Possibly work it into pouches and such, have them put a lot of stock on semi nomadic self reliance since they're from a desert planet. The focus siege warfare could also partially be rooted in their home planet with the liveable areas being heavily fortified so most battles are centered around sieges because the rest of it usually isn't worth fighting over. Heavy use of cybernetic could also help them be less reliant on the usual biological upkeep that might be an issue in a desert environment.

Throwing out some write-fagging to see if something sticks.

All of Salim's life he had been entranced by the djinn, the lords of fire. At night as a boy he would sneak to the rooftops and watch them flit about as lights in the sky. When he grew he would sneak out of the city to the edge of the desert to listen to the thunder and flames of the djinn at play among themselves. Always he would listen to the stories of the old men, the old warriors, and their tales of the chosen. Of the greatest warriors chosen by the Djinn to join them in their kingdom of fire in the sky.

In his 16th summer Salim joined the Khardaka of the city. He wanted to be a warrior, he wanted to be the greatest warrior, he wanted to be a Djinn. For 9 years he served his city, guarding caravans, protecting the Oasis that meant life or death in the desert, and his greatest achievment, leading the flank charge that broke the back of the army of Duke Alhim when they came to put the torch to his city.

No longer a boy but a man of 25, Salim had become a veteran, a warrior, but still not a Djinn. Then the criers arrived in his city. This had only happened once before, when Salim was so young he had still clung to his mother breast. They called for warriors for the tournament. A tournament for the pleasure of the Djinn. Some laughed, some thought it a trap, but Salim knew it was right. What an achievement it would be. A veteran of 10 years ending his career by winning glory for his city and himself.

Sounds a lot to me line what the Mujahedin would do in Afghanistan to the Soviets, and what the Chinese did to the Americans in Korea. You creep up towards the defended position undetected and then start pouring through at the last possible moment, making the enemy think a larger force is attacking and that this is just the first part that’s made it through

The tournament grounds were ancient. Said to be the site of where the first man had fallen as a shooting star to earth and claimed it as his own. Salim fought, fought more and harder than he ever had in his life. Sometimes he was alone, sometimes he was paired with warriors of the other cities to fight as a unit, Often he was sent out into the desert just to see if he would survive.

All the while Salim focused on the shrouded boxes of the Djinn. Heavily covered in intricate fabrics that allowed no man to peer deeper. The other fighters often joked they were filled by ghosts but Salim knew the Djinn were there.

At the end he did not win. In a fight among phalanxes Salim took a spear point to the shoulder and was forced from the fight. From the back he shouted to his men, screaming commands in rage at his own frailness and driving them on to a victory he could not share in.

That night he lay alone in his room. In the morning he must pack and return home a loser and no longer a warrior. He too would be one of the lame old men telling stories in the city square. As he lay awake he heard a thumping, quiet at first but growing louder and louder unitl it was right outside his door. Then came the knocking, Salim forced himself to his feet and pulled open the flimsy wooden door and a moment later fell to his knees. It was a Djinn, encased in a great metal shell and the red fire of his eyes burning brightly. He had been chosen, he was still a warrior, he would become even greater than he was, he would be a Djinn.

I like it, but don't marines tend to recruit teenagers and in the young end of that? That's something that always struck me as conflicting in marine lore. "Give me your greatest warriors that are still 14." Speaking of, do we have a chapter symbol?

Looks like a good start.

So I am thinking about being a Primaris chapter that are also Iron Warriors loyalists. How about a splinter group that fled the legion with a fragment of the imperial navy at the time of the heresy and remained in isolation in what became Imperium Nihilis.

When they were found, maybe by accident, by an Indomitus Crusade the only thing that saved them from being annihilated was a proven record of 10,000 years of loyalty to the Emperor. After that they were refounded as a true chapter instead of being loyalist renegades?
>>
>>75935012
If they're a primaris chapter they needn't be from loyalists, but simply made from stored IW geneseed.
>>
>>75935053
Yeah, IIRC Terra still has geneseed reserves from the traitor legions still lying around, Cawl could have just used that to make them.

I have this mental image in my head of Carl happily telling the chapter's first marines that they're made from Iron Warriors stock, without them knowing that the Iron Warriors are traitors. They go out into the world, proudly proclaiming themselves successors of the mighty Iron Warriors, and and get an extremely rude awakening.

I say, with the Persian/Near East theme we've tentatively got going on here, we have our desert homeworld be more mountainous, like Iran/Afghanistan. Probably dotted with lots of huge cities. The Middle East today is actually a very urbanised region, with the vast majority of the population living in cities. The same could be said for our homeworld. They aren't hive cities, just really sprawling and complex 'normal' cities dotted around wherever they can find a source of fresh water, nestled in between soaring mountain ranges. Could form a good basis for why we're so good at urban warfare, as well.

Put the tech level to an uneven low medieval - high classical and throw in some higher tech like rudimentary bolt guns and life supports in the fortresses so you can sustain a higher population around these old bastions, and contrast it against the current culture and knowledge of the people. So, writefaggotery coming up.

>The Silent Watchers have long stayed hidden, to atone for their past sins. What those are exactly is not clear, though many suspect a link to a traitorous legion.

>On their desert homeworld, they mostly live in large underground fortresses, where they keep watch on the precious water, pray, meditate and train, and maintaining the network of underground canals and reservoirs that allows the surface world to live.

> But on that world grows the silkweed, with which the local weavers make superb tapestries, carpets and draperies. These have attracted the attention of offworld merchants, who can make a great profit reselling these to richer worlds. Soon, a trade network was set up, and those involved paid little attention to the stories of some mystic monastic order living underground.

> But one day, a tradeship brought a grim cargo - genestealers, hidden by a cultist. These progressively infiltrated the city around the spaceport, and from there, spread into a Silent Watcher fortress under a nearby mountain. This spurned the ancient order out of its lethargy, and they fought hard to cleanse the fortress, and then the surface cities, of the menace.

>Breaking their traditional silence, they contacted the Imperial Navy, and informed them that the luxury trade networks of this sector were being used by a genestealer cult to infiltrate several worlds. The two then worked together to track down the infestation's source to the aristocracy of a nearby jungle world, that they cleared through years of urban fighting.

If you go with the idea that the chapter is a fragment of the Iron Warriors that remained loyal but hidden for fear of retaliation this is really good.

Also goes well with the idea that the chapter is heavy with dreadnoughts since until the Indomitus showed up with a Primaris geneseed all of the survivors of the legion had long since been intombed in a dreadnought.

Okay, writefaggotry time. I'm going with a Space Wolves type situation where the chapter's official name is the Iron Falcons, while they refer to themselves as the Efreet.

>They hadn't impressed him. Not at first, anyways.

>The crusade had landed on Mykos V with fire and fury, scattering the Ork warbands camped in the wasteland in short order. Captain Holos of the Sons of Guilliman had seen them off, his men hounding them back towards their objective with speeders and bikes.

>The Iron Falcons - or Efreet, as they referred to themselves as - had acquitted themselves well during that phase of the campaign, but they hadn't impressed him. He had heard tales of their proficiency in the press of close combat, but their knifework hadn't been anything particularly impressive. Certainly it wasn't as beautiful as the refined savagery of the Blood Angels or their kin-chapters, or the barbarity of the Space Wolves. It was solid, to be sure, but nothing noteworthy. Their habit of carrying, to a man, immense boarding shields, even in an open wasteland, compounded Holos' feeling.

>All that changed, of course, once they reached their objective.

>The Orks' immense macro-fortress was the only thing worth taking on Mykos V. It was the size of a subcontinent, and protected by an inviolate void shield. Part fortress, part ramshackle manufacturing facility, the Orks had taken advantage of Mykos V's natural abundance of metals to turn their fortress into a ceaseless producer of arms and ammunition. Which was something the Imperium could not let stand.

>For three months, the Sons of Guilliman and the Iron Falcons, alongside a contingent of the Imperial Guard, shelled the most vulnerable portion of the greenskin's wall. During that time, the 'Efreet' Commander and his men had been ceaselessly studying the chaotic interior of the Ork fastness. When the time came to storm the breach, he and his men volunteered to be the first in. Holos had humored him and accepted.

>They stormed the breach quickly, squad by squad. Even when they were at a dead run, under an immense volume of fire, they maintained the integrity of their shield wall. The first who went in were equipped with flamer units. Their pilot lights bursting into brilliant lances of flame, the first squad made the area directly in front of the breach into a burning hell, forcing the greenskins back.

>The rest of them came in, each squad covering the backs of the other. Holos watched their progress from within his command Rhino, their power armor's positional data overlaid over their maps of the fortress interior. Each squad moved quickly to their assigned positions, breaching the various guard towers and crude manufactories and forcing the Orks out with brutal, ruthless precision. They moved fast. They killed fast, too.

>Then they advanced deeper inward. Holos watched, fascinated, as each squad moved in coordination, each force covering the advance of the other. When they came across another greenskin fastness, they converged, some squads drawing fire from afar, others launching diversionary attacks, and others storming the building from the flanks, their towering shields taking the brunt of the abuse. Once they were inside, they cleared each room quickly and methodically, turning the interior of the ramshackle building into a flaming, shot torn ruin.

>When the greenskins mobbed up and counter-attacked, they reacted almost organically, spreading out and enveloping their brute charge. Each squad covered the flank of the other, scything down the raging Orks in a brutal crossfire, breaking the horde apart into a dozen ragged bands that were individually picked apart by the squads bringing up the rear.

>Holos, at first, had been mildly impressed. The Falcons' commander was clearly a master of coordinating such engagements, and he had remarked as such to his senior sergeant. That was when, to his shock, Holos had learned that the Falcons' commander had gone in with his men. There was nobody outside the wall commanding the Efreet troops - their squads were operating of their own accord, acting and reacting independently as the combat situation changed.

>That was when they truly began to impress him.

>After the first hour they had forged a beachhead, and Holos had sent in the Imperial Guard heavy infantry to mop up and secure it. The Falcons had carved a fearsome swathe into the macrofortress in a frighteningly short amount of time, though they had paid a heavy price - barely half of the men who had stormed the breach returned.

>Holos had down-loaded the recording of their assault into his armor's storage system. He intended to study the Falcon's tactics and, hopefully, disseminate them to the rest of his chapter. He could only wonder how they had reached such an inhuman level of coordination. It was impressive, even for Astartes.

>Holos chuckled to himself, imagining what the Master of the Forge would say when he ordered a full company's worth of boarding shields...

>Kaveh knelt before Chaplain Aban and heard his words.

>"You were a man once, but no longer. You were mortal once, but no longer. You were helpless once, but no longer."

>Kaveh bowed his head deeper in respect for Aban's words. He would not directly look upon the Chaplain until asked of.

>"Neophyte Kaveh, you have passed all the trials required of you. You have succeeded where many others who wished to join our sacred brotherhood have failed. You have demonstrated the patience of stone and the ferocity of the Mountain-Hawk. You have shown your commitment to the teachings of the Efreet. You zeal and fearlessness are beyond question."

>Aban slammed the haft of his blessed crozius on the floor of the ritual chamber. Kaveh, dutifully, looked up, into the Chaplain's skull helmet.

>"I am honored, mighty one." Kaveh said reverentially. "I am prepared to join the brotherhood."

>"Then rise."

>Kaveh rose, the joints of his power armor purring at the motion. From behind the Chaplain, four Serfs came, bearing an immense shield, broader and taller than the mightiest mortal man. Upon it, he could see tiny silver script - the names of the four warriors who had born this shield before him, and their mightiest deeds.

>Arman, who singlehandedly turned back a Tyranid assault at Gate 7/8-Omega with nothing but his shield and his blade. Bardiya, who was first in the breach at Mykos V, martyring himself in glory on the final day of that bloody siege. Arta, who felled an Exarch of the Striking Scorpions in single combat. And mighty Barbak, who slew a dozen traitor astartes in a single boarding action, who was counted among the ranks of the revered first company when he fell.

>Kaveh's name was now inscribed upon the shield, below those exalted heroes. The empty space below his name was almost like an unspoken promise. What deeds would be recorded in silver script upon this shield, he wondered?

>"Remember now, as always, that you are but a part of the Emperor's Shield. Your eternal duty is to defend the Emperor's realm from all those who would see it harmed. You must never waver, for you are his wrath, and the Emperor's Wrath does not waver."

>"But do not forget this too: all warriors must join Final Bulwark. Know that one day your name, inscribed upon this shield, will be all that remains of you. Until your dying night, remember this. Remember your duty to the Emperor and his people. But do not fear! For even in death, your soul, bound to this shield, will still protect the Emperor's domains. You are immortal now, a part of the Eternal Shield, an avatar of the Emperor's patient wrath."

>The serfs turned the shield, offering it to Kaveh. He whispered the names of the fallen warriors who had once born this shield into battle, beseeching their souls to protect him and find him worthy of bearing it.

>He strapped the shield to his gauntlet. Chaplain Aban stood but a pace from him now, his own gold-chased shield held in his hand.

>As one, they slammed their shields together, the sound loud enough to wake the dead. Aban nodded, satisfied.

>"Welcome to the Efreet, Shield-Brother Kaveh."

It'd probably make more sense to mix the Chaplaincy with Techmarines if it's Scions of Mars and Shepherd-Marshalls. Increase the number of Chaplains to have the younger members with some technical know-how on the front lines, to temper their spirits and their steel, and put the senior members into dreads as someone earlier suggested.

Maybe weaving is the outlet for IW derived creativity and autism. Marines will make their own personalized patterns for a tabard. The older the marine, the more richly embroidered and densely patterned the fabric as the skill develops and they earn the right to incorporate certain patterns and icons into their designs. (No-one will EVER paint a squad of these guys).

Often the damaged robes are given as gifts to favoured chapter servants, or other imperial soldiers that perform well alongside them. There are some PDF units that have an insanely ornate battle standard made from their gifted robes.

IW autism, reading these fabrics is probably a language in and of itself. Like, thread choices, stitch patterns, if a pattern is stitched or woven, how it's woven, how it's repaired, everything has some kind of meaning. When a marine gives one of these away, its not just honouring a singular event in their life, it's leaving a monument to their life thus far. Could be what keeps 'em stable despite being brutal door kickers. Not just the act of creation, but learning to put that into the line of battle. Learning to see it get cut and rended as they are, seeing this as a symbol of their dedication, this record of all I am is, like, me, to be placed in the fiercest battle against the enemy of mankind.

Also, looking totally baller. But they don't say that part when people ask. It's the warrior monk focus and dedication thing.

This might be a dumb little detail but i think it would be cool since they come from traitor legion stock that their librarians are obsessed with getting the Emperors guidance threw the Emperors Tarot.

Just a bit of flavor. Makes me think of the fortune tellers at a bazaar. Works into any guilt and shame they feel and sometimes the tarot does more harm than good.

>like that time they took their time getting to the Lamenters distress signal aboard a space hulk only to narrowly avoid being sucked into a warp storm.
